I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

No the cables are not the same, SATA and IDE are very different.

So ground info is needed though....

What motherboard do you have, make and model?
If you dont know this info then Everest Free will help just tell us what is listed under Computer > Summary > Motherboard

or tell us if this PC is a OEM build as in HP, Sony, Dell etc again model and version number is needed.

These days most or majority of motherboards that employ SATA only have 1 at most IDE connections, so if your using 2 CD/DVD drives the connector capacity will be full.

If you do have a spare IDE connection, then my advice to you is to keep the SATA drive as the primary C: drive ( as they are faster in data transfer than IDE ) and use the ID drive as storage, so once the IDE drive is installed copy all your normal data/music/video/image etx files to the larger drive and just use the SATA for the OS and applications.

Hi all,

So I'm on the market for a new hard drive, as my current one is about dead (Windows will not load even in safe mode anymore). I currently have a Gateway NV52 laptop with a 320GB SATA hard drive. RPM is 5400 and buffer size is 8GB, beyond that, I don't know much else since I haven't removed it from my laptop. (I do know how to do this safely.)

In my searches for a new one, I've found one that is an exact replica (but obviously in better shape) as my own, made for my particular system, and another that is also made for my model, but in 500GB (RPM and buffer is the same), and only $5 more. It is very tempting to just buy it, but I need to know whether it is possible, for one, and secondly, whether it is even recommended. I have Vista, but when I get the new drive, I am going to install 7 on it, since I got a free upgrade to 7 when I bought the computer 3 years ago and never installed it. (I have the disk and serial for it.) From there, I am going to put my old drive into an external enclosure and transfer files that way. I know I'll be able to transfer the easy stuff (documents, pics, etc) with no problem, but with different OS's, will I be able to transfer program files directly from my old hard drive into the program file folder of my new one? Some of these (Microsoft Office especially) I installed a long time ago and I no longer have the serial numbers for them, this is why I am asking that particular question.

Any recommendati... Read more

Answer:Can I swap my failed 320GB hard drive for a larger one?

Yes. You can use any 2.5" SATA internal drive.

2.5" SATA drives are available up to 1TB (1000GB); however I've found the long-term reliability of anything over 500GB to be a bit more iffy.

Although $10-$20 more than a standard grade drive, my pick would be be Western Digital Scorpio Black series. The 7200 RPM speed will boost performance a bit with very little (about 1%) impact on battery life, and they usually have 16MB cache memory equaling faster seek times.

You will only be able to transfer files. Programs such as MS-Office require a complete retinstall, so be sure to have your license activation codes handy for any paid software you reinstall on the new drive.

Hope this helps.

I am using a Gateway E4000, with a WD IDE harddrive partitioned into 2 partitions, OEM XP Pro Sp3, 1.5 gig memory, 2.5 ghz CPU.  I want to put this existing harddrive into a Dell Dimension 8400. It has a SATA Harddrive, OEM (?) XP Media Sp3. 4 gig memory, 3 ghz CPU.  I have no drivers BUT I do have the Dell Bios on a CD.My questions are:1. Since I am moving to the Dell will there still be a BIOS that I can set the IDE drive as the boot drive?  If not how can I use the BIOS that I have on the CD?2. I have no drivers, so will XP boot using generic drivers until I can download from Dell?3. Since my IDE Drive has an OEM version of XP (and a different flavor of XP) will it need to be reactivated, and infact will MS activate XP anymore?4. If MS no longer activates can I download software that will retrieve my old act # and use that?5. What other problems am I looking at and any solutions for those problems?

Answer:How to swap a IDE hard drive from a Gateway to a Dell the has a SATA hard drive

You cannot legally use an OEM installation of Windows on a different machine; the license is tied to the hardware. Also if you take a hard drive with Windows installed on it, out of one PC and put it into another PC, and set it to be the boot drive, it most likely won't work properly. If it works at all. You will need to install a properly licensed version of Windows of your choice on the Dell, if there isn't one already.

Hey guys, bought this brand new hard drive (listed above), and i think it is faulty. ok the primary reason that i obught it ,was to put it into my ps3 for more storage space. it powered up, (had a ticking noise), and the ps3 wouldnt read it, my computer when connected to it, it would read it, sometimes, and i even put a couple movies onto it. but it wont read it any more, nor will my ps3 ever touch it. ummm is there any way this hard drive can be fixed? also i know its not my ps3, as i jsut obught the exact same hard drive, n it worked in my ps3 perfectly, so i think the problem lies within the hard drive itself. what can i do, many thanks!

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

Hi,

I hope someone can help me?

I live in the UK

I brought a new sata 500 GB hard drive a while ago but after about 6 months it died...

i rang samsung and they sent me a new one under warrenty...

the new one broke a month later!

but now when i tried to RMA it through their website it says they cannot replace it because it was sent from the USA - i emailed them and they said the same thing in their email.

So now i cant replace the drive because they sent it from another country?

is there anything i can do?

surly thats not right - was a new drive and they chose to send it from the USA not me.

Thank you

Timez

Answer:Samsung sent me a new sata hard drive...

You should CALL the company and speak with a live person or two or three to get it resolved.

Have you had your computer physically checked for problems that could be causing the hard drives to fail? If there is no fault in the hardware (or user error)...the drives could have both been from a "faulty batch of hard drives."

Does Samsung have a policy regarding how many drives can be returned in a certain time period?

My hard drive started making funny clicking noises and the pc pitstop checkup gave me a response time of 77ms and a warning that it could expire shortly. So i bought a new 80 gb hard drive, installed it, partitioned it no problem, but i now want to swap all the data from my old hard drive to my new one (os and all), and then junk the old drive.
How can i do this without spending money on software that i will probably only use once or twice.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi i've got a p4 built on an intel D865PERL motherboard. I used to run only a 160G SATA hard drive, and I decided to get a new hard drive. I bought and installed a 300G ATA hard drive, and installed windows XP on it.

The problem is that the SATA isnt recognized anymore. When I load the bios before startup, it doesnt even show up!
I have tried a bios upgrade, and it already had the latest bios version.
I have also tried going into device manager, to see if it had to be enabled under the admin username, but of course its not recognized in the bios so it wouldnt show up there...

The old SATA still has windows installed on it. i was hoping to run both hard drives for a while, and transfer over data onto the new ATA drive and then remove the SATA and run the one hard drive.

Does anyone know why I cant run the SATA with the ATA? I thought this would be possible!? Is it because I have windows installed on the SATA, i wouldnt think that would be a problem in recognizing the drive...

is the SATA master and the ATA slave?

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

I have a M50 - 8187 Think Centre and I see on the motherboard and in the manual that there is a SATA 1 and a SATA 2 connection. I tried to hook up a SATA 2 hard drive but when I connect everything up using a SATA data cable, there is nothing recognizable in the BIOS. I took a 30 gig IDE hard drive and hooked it up as a slave and the BIOS recognized it right away. My question is, can a SATA hard drive be used on the M50 Think Centre series and if so, what do I have to do to get the SATA 2 controller recognized in the BIOS. I updated the BIOS to the latest version, but this did not help. I see no where in the BIOS to enable SATA. Any help regarding my problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!! Ken

Answer:Installing a SATA 2 Hard Drive with the first hard drive being a primary IDE Hard Drive

You never will have to 'Enable' SATA for it to work, are you sure your plugging in the sata power cable ? The question may also be can your machine handle this drive, not can the machine handle sata. I would reccomend running a bios update, and then trying again.

HelpI have an old PC,with a jetway mother board.I have purchased a W/DIG 160sata hard drive(Not knowing there was a big difference to IDE).First problem,no sata plug on mother board.Have now got an ide adapter and plugged it in.On boot it show the hard drive as master, and so I moved on to load XP.It runs as far as Poss and then says windows cant find a hard drive??What do I have to do next?...How do I get the windows system to see the hard drive??Help!!

Answer:Xp wont see sata hard drive

You will require a Sata host controller card and you will require the Sata drivers for the hard drive that you transfer to a floppy on installingWXP you press F6 it will then ask you to inset the floppy.Windows will see only upto 121GB although this was suppose to have been delt with SP2,i would return the sata drive for an IDE not above 120GB.

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

Answer:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

Someone unplugged my Sata USB connected hard drive when it hung up during a file copy session. Now, it won't mount. XP and Linux will not recognize it. XP Error message is USB Not Recognized. Linux Error Message is Cannot Mount Volume. :cry

What Free Hard Disk Utility Software can fix this problem?

Answer:USB Sata Hard Drive wont mount

First off, you can check the status of the filesystem of the hard drive buy going to computer management under administrator tools. Once you get to computer management, click drive management.

If you do not see administrator tools on your start menu, right click on the start icon and go to properties. Go to the start menu tab and then and then click customize. Towards the bottom you should see an option to include administrator tools in the start menu.

See what the drive shows up in drive management (be sure not to mistake it for your boot drive, probably c:\). A lot of things can show up, so report back with what it says. If you don't see the drive, report that also.

Issue: Its seen that computer having a samsung hard drive of 320 GB and 500 GB will give black screen with a cursor at the top left corner and it wont boot.
The reason behind this is these hard drives contains a scanner inside them which periodically scans the hard drive to check for error and tries to recover them.
Resolution: Enter the Boot device menu(By pressing the F12 or F9 key on the manufacturer logo).
Change the Boot Device
Select HARD DRIVE as the 1st boot priority and press enter. The system may or may not boot.
If the system boots, go to : http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R180581&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D530S&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=13763&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=2&libid=41&fileid=246131
Here you will find a patch which will delete/disable the scanner.
If the system wont boot even after selecting the Hard drive from Boot menu., wait till the scan completes and then run this patch.
Do not Reinstall OS or replace your hard drive for this issue.

Download the hard disk test utility from the maker of the hard- drive and run a test. If the drive is failing use "PC File Inspector or Recuva" to get your data off the drive. Both those programs are free and quite good at recovering data.

Hello and i thank you all for your help in advance. I've found other threads with some solutions to my issue but my computer does not have a floppy drive so i cannot solve this problem via that route.

I have an Asus EEE 1005ha laptop and the hard drive failed. I just bought a new SATA 500gb hard drive and did the physical install, but now when I try to install my original Windows XP service pack 3 re-installation disk and i start running through the installation process, Windows is not letting me select any hard drive to install the operating system on. It says there is no hard drive present. It will eventually prompt me to hit F6 to select drivers so i can property do the install but anything i select from the list is prompting me to insert the re-installation disk into the floppy drive (which i have none), and then i am forced to restart the entire process.

I've read other posts that i would need to get the proper drivers loaded onto a floppy in order to move forward so Windows can see the drive. How do i get around this without a floppy? I tried loading the files I think i needed from the ASUS website onto a flash drive but windows will not recognize this drive when i plug it in. I am fairly knowledgeable with PC's but this is obviously too big a problem for me to get past.

PLEASE HELP!!! Thank you.

Hello and good evening to you all. Okay, here we go, and i'm hoping that i can get some help with this please. I have a samsung Rv510 laptop that I purchased a few months ago from argos..exact link is here

I purchased this laptop in July, as I also have a desktop, and it has a hard drive disk space of 320gb hard drive(as advertised). I never really checked the hard disk space on it, when i was using it and I had loadz of stuff on the hard drives which I then copied to an external hard drive. I will be selling this laptop on gumtree is a few days, and I decided to restore it to factory settings yesterday, and ive done all the updates and everything is fine, but when I go to my computer, it shows the local disk C drive as 206GB free of 230. The only drive that shows is the c drive, and I know that there is probably the samsung recovery disk that takes some space, but for me to have 206GB left from a 320gb hard drive is way too small, and when I wanna sell it on gumtree, how can I confirm to a potential buyer that it came with a 320Gb hard drive please??? If i can try and claw back MORE of the hard drive from wherever it is hidden, that would be much appreciated. Any suggestions please??

Answer:WHERE is the rest of my 320Gb hard drive???

I'm guessing it has W7 installed and also guessing that this might work the same as Vista.
Click the start menu and right click computer from the list. Now click manage and then expand the disk storage menu at the left. That should list all the partitions on the HDD and their space... if it works like Vista :)

trying to upgrade old 80gb hard drive on my dell dimension e521. is there any limit to the size of the new hard drive i can use? in dell specs they mention going with two 320s. is a 320gb the largest drive i can go with? plan to use a western digital 320gb sata 7200rpm 16mb cache. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Upgrading with a 320GB hard drive

What operating system are you using?

In theory you should be able to use a much larger hard disk, but you need to make sure you use the correct interface for them.

There are two types used in Dell PCs:

1. PATA, or IDE hard disks (which use a flat, wide ribbon cable to connect to the motherboard)
2. SATA hard disks (which use a small flat cable to connect to the motherboard).

At the time it was probably just sold with 2x 320GB hard disks as an option. You should be able to go much larger if you wish.

I'm trying to get a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB SATA drive working with my 1706-M7M X60 thinkpad. I've cloned my existing OEM Hitachi 80GB to the new drive using Acronis True Image. So far I've done this four times so I'm thinking the cloning is not the issue. BIOS has been switched to Compatibility mode. The odd thing is that the resuce and recovery partition works but not the bootable windows partition? I can also see all the files on the new drive, both partitions are visible when it is plugged in via the USB enclosure. They look fine. I've been trying to get it working for 3 days and I'm ready to throw the notebook out the window!  Thanks in advance.

Answer:Help! X60 won't boot with new 320GB hard drive..

There's probably something wrong with the master boot record (MBR) on the new drive. If you're using Windows Vista you can download and create a bootable recovery CD that will repair the MBR. Download this ISO using BitTorrent and burn to a blank CD. With the new HD installed in the X60, boot your from recovery CD. You may need to buy/borrow an external USB CD drive if you don't have an Ultrabase with CD drive. Then do a Repair following this procedure.

I installed a slave drive in my HP Pavillion PC (Win98) some 6 months ago (after some very helpful advice from forum "listeners" - thanks again!). In the past month I have started to experience an intermittent fault - on standby mode the drive whirrs loudly every four or five seconds and the system refuses to come out of standby. I have to reboot the machine. I use Norton Utilities which on reboot tells me I have an invalid boot record on the slave drive but to only repair it if I am experiencing difficulties using the drive (which I'm not, so I don't).Anyone have any suggestions to this long-winded thread!?Squeals

Answer:freecom sl hard drive 80gb

Usually these things are "Plug n Play" - this is of course dependent upon your Windows insallation (should work fine as long as you have full XP Home/Pro and it is genuine). Most additional drives will work fine in this way but some do require installation of additional software from the manufacturer - thats just the way it is!

Hi,

I needed more space on my pc so i bought an extra hard drive. I installed it on the second IDE, set my first harddrive as a master drive and set my second as a cable select (as it didn't have instructions for a slave drive). Booted the compyter, but the BIOS didn't pick up the new hard drive. When i booted Windows it would pick up the new hardware but I couldn't see it in Windows Explorer or My Computer.

I then unplugged the second hard drive and replaced my 2 CD-ROMS with it. So I had one hard drive on IDE1 and one on IDE2. This worked fine and the BIOS regonised it. However I can't plug both CD Roms and two hard drives because the IDE cables aren't long enough.

Does anyone have any idea what im doing wrong? Help would be greatly appreciated!

I need to replace my hard drive on my 3000 C200 (out of warranty). I was looking to replace with a refurbished 80GB, but am not sure which are compatible. It says 5400RPM sata, but so do many of the ones I've researched. Does anyone have any experience in doing this? After I get the drive, can I just run the product recovery CD to restore the operating system and then add my backed-up files? Thanks

Answer:80GB Hard Drive died

I am not sure how much cheaper a refurbished drive cost. But I can tell you if you are going to get a new drive, get a 720rpm and I prefer seagate. The reason is simple. 7200 rpm will give you a faster drive than 5400 rpm and Seagate drive has 5 years warranty on it. It is definitely better than a refurbished drive which may have one year of warranty. As for recovery, it should work if your recvoery Cd done correctly. I do believe you should have at least two DVDs and one of them is bootable.

I’ve own a “320gb Simpledrive External Hard Drive:” for almost 2 years now. About 6 months ago, my “320gb SEHD” stopped working. After weeks of trying to fix it, I’d finally decided to store it away in my closet. A week ago from now, I took my “320gb SEHD” out of my closet to test it a few more time and it turned on! I was sooo happy but that happiness faded once I’d connected to my computer… My computer said that I needed to install the software to activate it and I’d lost the CD. Plus, ever since my laptop had broken, I’ve been using my Desktop (Windows XP SP3) which had no internet access so I have no idea which software to get (forgetton disc name)... I’ve been downloading what I think would work from the Library’s computers but none of them didn’t work. So I ask, what software do I need to install my 320gb SEHD?!

Answer:Help !! 45gb missing from a 80gb hard drive

You're probably using the FAT32 file system, and XP has a 32 gb limit on it's format tool with that. If so, you either need to run Fdisk using a Windows 98 startup floppy or use Partition Magic or similar. You can download the files for a 98 floppy from here:-click here

Does anyone know if I can upgrade my Compaq Presario Hard drive to 80GB Ultra ATA/133 @7200RPM? I'm running out of Hard drive space and constantly get a message saying that I have little space left. I have to constantly defrag my system and erase most of what I download off the internet. My computer is old and I think it only has about 30GB which most of my software takes up. I'm looking to turn my computer into a modern computer by updating my hard drive. Everything else works fine. I have great speed and hardly ever run into problems so I'm not looking to replace my computer just update it.

Thanks,

Jasmine

Answer:Can I upgrade my HD to 80GB ultra ata/133 hard drive?

That upgrade should be just fine, seeing as you already have support for 30GB hard drives, then 80GB will also work. You'll only have problems (depends on your system, which you haven't supplied details on) if you decide to go above 137GB, as that would require an ATA133 controller.

Here is my pain I have windows xp on a 30gb drive that is partitioned into two drives. Windows xp is running off of a 20gb partition and the other partition is for storage. I have grown out of this hard drive, so I bought a Western Digital 80gb w/8mb cache drive then comes my pain. Windows XP will not allow me to move my XP partition to the new drive! Even in the help and support if you look it up it will tell you that windows xp does not support this. Any ideas what I can do to solve this problem. I had considered using windows backup, reloading windows xp on the new drive then using windows backup to try to take the new drive to were I have my computer now. Only problem is I could just do a full install, and save time. The tools that came with the drive will not copy the XP partition either. Maybee I should do a full install because I am going to use the old 30gb for a double boot with mandrake linux.

So my questions are this, should I just go ahead and reinstall XP on the new drive?
And, if I want to double boot to mandrake is there a certain way I should go about it? Or do I just tell windows xp I will be double booting during setup? Will it promt me to install linux at that time? Will using a NTSF partition, and whatever mandrake will be using as its file system cause problems? Have you set any partitions with this new drive? Are you sure that all available space is being used?

Go to Start, run, and type in command then hit enter.

type in fdisk and hit enter

select Y for large disk support and hit enter.

hit 4 and enter to display Partition Information.

is your partition set to 100%?
are there more than one partition? do they all add up to 100%?
What is the brand of the new hardrive? Most Harddrive manufacturers have software available on their site to handle transferring all data to new harddrives.

I can recommend the one on Seagate's site (it's free) as I know it will work with Quantum drives as well, and more than likely any other drives. Take a look at my experience to learn a little more about it.

I've heard before that Hard Drives over 32GB in size cannot run under FAT32 mode. I've also heard that some people have bypassed this limitation by using third party partitioning programs and the sort of thing. Now I'm asking, is there an easy way to re-format my 80GB Hard Drive from NTFS to FAT32 and install Windows ME on it? I did this with my 4GB hard drive, not as a test for FAT32, just as a test for Windows ME and my hardware. That worked out good so now I'm going to do the same to my 80GB HD. Can it be done? Would I have to use a third party partitioning software? Can I use MaxBlast 3 to do it? Thanks.

I'm tearing my hair out here trying to partition and format an 80GB Hitachi hard drive. I want to create two 40GB FAT32 partitions and then mount the drive in an external enclosure. The drive is currently installed in the PC as Primary Master. Booting with a Win 98SE floppy only lets me create a partition of 13999MB (14GB). If I boot with a Windows XP installation CD, that only finds available space in which to create a partition of 4GB.If I install the drive in the USB 2.0 enclosure and plug it in, XP's Disk Management sees the full 80GB of "Unallocated Space", but doesn't give me the option to create a partition. (The external housing's instructions do say the drive must be partitioned/formatted before installing.)Am I missing something?

Answer:Portege M500 - 320GB Hard Drive Upgradeable

Hi

Since the SATA controller has not real HDD size limitation I would say that this is possible.
As far as I know the notebook supports the 2.5 (S-ATA) (ATA-6) 5,400 rpm. 9.5mm HDDs
You can also use HDDs with various speeds.

That should be ok.

Hiya,

I am having some problems with my Western Digital 320gb hard drive. When i load up the pc, windows starts and the desktop loads up etc. I then go into "My Computer" and the drive is present, i can access it and brouse through files. But it disapears from 1 minute to 20 minutes after complete load up. I currently have 2 hard drives in the pc, a 40gb master (containing windows) and a 120gb slave (containing programs and media). I attached the 320gb onto my other IDE cable and set it as master and connected it to the end IDE connector. I did this just so that i can transfer all my files on my 120gb over to my 320gb.

Does anyone know why the drive is simply disapearing without warning?

If you need any further information please let me know and i will help as much as i can.

Many Thanks,
Andy Gray

Answer:Problem with my 320gb Western Digital Hard Drive

That should work, humm with the hdd as the master I assume you are setting the jumpers on the cd/dvd drive as the slave? If so try making the cd/dvd drive the master. Some burners are picky they have to be the master and the third hdd as the slave. Just because it is the slave you still should be able to transfer files to it with no problems.

Edit - something else to consider maybe the PSU can't handle the load and is crapping out.

I need to copy an 80Gb Windows 98 hard drive, using something like Ghost. It is formatted into a number of partitions, which also need to be copied. Can this all be done in one fell swoop, or do you have to do each partition separately? The other problem is that my Windows 98 FDisk does not recognise the full 80Gb, which makes it a little difficult to format... Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Copying data from 80Gb Hard Drive with partitions.

The Fdisk prob I think is down 2 the fact that win98 will only regonise hd below a certain limit which 80gig is well past. Try using a separate tool like partion magic.

I have a hotswap caddy in my Vista Dell PC and need a new hard drive to use in it.
So far I have only used 1 TB drives with it.
Is the physical size of a 3Tb drive the same as 1Tb or Tb drives, and will it go into the caddy?
Will a Dell XPS 435MT (i7 920)with Bios 1.1.2 running 64bit Vista SP2 OS be OK with a 3TB drive?
sorry, I can't find how old the PC is : maybe 3 years?
Thank you!.

I do vertical systems integration and am getting more and more requests for W7.
I have a drive tray used as the boot drive and I want to be able to swap out the boot drive in order to change OS's and Options. I don't trust multi boot installs, they get in each others way, and sometimes I need Linux in various distros. All the data i may need "across platforms" is on FAT32 partitions.

On my XP machine I have 4 HD that have XP installed with different software sets and options, and 2 with Linux. I just power down, swap the HD and power on again.

I already made a W7 System Image and Recovery disk.

Is this doable in W7?

Next is to figure out how to lock down the BIOS so it doesn't keep changing my boot options!

My HD list is
DRIVE 1 C: NTFS
WD 160GB SATA
Drive 2
WD WD5002AALX 500GB
partitioned:
Data files D: FAT32
Downloaded files E: FAT32
ARCHIVE F: Fat32
DRIVE 3 G: NTFS
WD WD5002AALX 500GB

Answer:Hard drive tray used to swap W7 boot drive?

Hello randyrls, welcome to Seven Forums!

This would be a whole lot easier, no swapping HDDs around, you don't even have to power-down, just reboot.

   Information

The easiest way to do away with boot issues between separate Operating Systems (OS) is to use the BIOS one time boot menu to select which OS to boot at system startup, each motherboard has an individual hot-key to tap during system start-up to access this menu.

If you have 2 separate Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and have one OS installed to one HDD and you want to install another OS to the second HDD, disconnect the HDD with the first OS installed on it and leave only the HDD you want to install the second OS to connected.

Install the second OS to the connected HDD and when complete and the system is booting good, power down and reconnect the first HDD with the first OS on it.

This way the OSs will boot independently of each other and there will be no boot conflicts between the 2 separate OSs to have to sort later.

Then set the BIOS to boot the HDD / OS you want as default and if you want to start the other (new) OS you use the BIOS one-time boot menu to select that HDD / OS to start when the PC is started.Asus - F8
HP/Compaq - Esc
Sony - F2
Acer – F12
Packard Bell
Gateway - F10
eMachnes - F10
Gigabyte – F12
Toshiba - F12

so basically, found a random desktop outside the dumpster i guess someone was getting rid of, and i was like, eh, looks pretty new, lemme take it in and check it out. only thing missing was the front piece and the hdd, everything else was in tact. so i figured lemme take the hdd out of my crappy computer i use and try to hook it up to the "new" one. well my old one has an ide setup, and this one is a sata hookup. i unplugged the ide cable and power from the cd/dvd drive in the new machine, set my ide hdd to master, and plugged it into the emachine. i booted everything up, and it came to the boot menu to choose, safe mode, safe mode with networking, normal, ect.. so i choose normal, emachine logo pops up, starts loading, i see hit f2 or f10 in the bottom right hand corner, the usual, but then it just goes back to the boot menu asking for safe mode, normal, ect... i went into the bios and i see it recognizes my hdd and everything else looks normal.

anyone have any idea why it wont boot up. im on my old pc now. i just popped the hdd back in and booted on up no problem. also, just to put it out there, i do have a few external hdd's i could possibly use as an internal hdd i think.

new pc is an emachine t3604 with sata hdd hookup

You can not boot off a HDD between systems. Windows gets confused, as all it's hardware settings are now all different. You have to do a fresh install.

and welcome to the Forum

You cannot move a drive with XP to another machine without reinstalling ( or a repair install if you are lucky )

Look at the capacitors on the eMachines . . they were hit hard with the bad capacitor plague

To test the machine ability to boot, try booting from a installation cd

I have a 320GB I/O Magic external hard drive that I copied all my data to for moving to my new Windows 7 machine (which I just purchased today). Only problem is the new machine is either not recognizing the drive or it's not working with Windows 7. At first it showed as the I drive but when I clicked on it to access my files it just clocked and clocked and My Computer eventually stopped responding. Then it didn't show up as a drive at all. Then it was there again, and so on. Been playing with it all day with no success.

Drive has been plugged into an XP Home machine and there are several applications installed on it because the hard drive on my old machine was full.

Any suggestions?

Answer:I/O Magic 320GB External Hard Drive Not Working/Recognized

Are you using a powered adapter for your drive or depending on the USB connection to supply the power? If you are depending on the USB it may be due to too much power already being used and not enough to power it sufficiently for the drive to work correctly, if powered by its own adapter check it on another USB port known to be working, these are what I would try if this was something I was needing to troubleshoot on a system I owned or was working on, good luck.

My Seagate 320GB External Hard Drive makes a funny whirling noise whenever I plug it into the USB port. The whirling noise is interrupted by an occasion "beep." My computer doesn't recognize that anything has been plugged in. When I went to "Computer Management" and checked under "Disk Management," I'm being shown two additional drives (beyond the C: and D: drives) that are not labeled.

The first one has the following details: FAT file system and Healthy (EISA Configuration) status. When I right-click that drive, it only gives me the option of "Help." I'm pretty sure that's not the Seagate drive but I have no idea what it is.

The second one has the following details: FAT32 file system and Healthy (Unknown Partition) status. When I right-click that drive, all the options expect for "Delete Partition..." and "Help" are unavailable. This is more than likely the Seagate drive.

Is there anything I can go to recover my files off the external drive? Programs, services, anything at all!

Answer:Seagate 320GB External Hard Drive: Dead or Salvageable?

It sounds like what is happening is that the HDD is spinning up then giving an error (stopping an beeping). I've had it happen before. The best advice I can give you is to try it until It spins up and then get your data off asap. Also, did you make the drive yourself (buy internal HDD/external case) or is it 'store bought' ?

Hi,
I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and my external hard drive (usb powered, 320gb freeagent seagate go) does not show up in my computer.

I've tried switching usb ports, nothing happens.
I've run the troubleshooter (control panel- troubleshooting) but it says that hardware changes might not have been detected. I tried restarting, but the problem still remains.

It detects in Windows xp on the same computer (dual boot).
It also shows up in partition magic installed on Windows 7.

I've attached a screenshot of the two:

Assign a drive letter to it - in disk management you right click it and select assign drive letter - not sure with what your using. If if that doesnt work put up your system specs in detail and a screen shot of disk management.

The portable hard drive works on my XP, Vista, 7, and 8. When I try to access it all I get is working on it. It did open once but wouldn't open all my files. There is still over 290 GB of space avalible.

Answer:Why does my Iomega HDD 320GB external hard drive not work on my windows 10?

Could be lots of things. What format is the drive in (FAT32, NTFS, other etc). If you are able to connect to an OS on an older OS, it may well be worth backing them up on that, then format on the Win10 PC then look at copying the files back. Sounds drastic, but that's something I would consider.

Answer:How to reformat hard drive after installing 80gb intel mSata

hey, I can help you with this since I've done it before.  first thing you will need to do is burn a recovery disc, use onekey recovery that comes pre-installed on you're lenovo, you will find there is an option to burn a factory reset recovery disc.  make sure you back up anything important on you're hard drive like music, pictures, etc. there should be a folder named lenovo under C:, in it you will find a folder named drivers and a folder named applications, burn them on a cd, you will need  to install them on you're computer once you have re-installed windows.  if you have a copy of windows on a cd, put it in you're disc drive, restart windows, press f12, select boot from cd. delete you're old partitions and create a new one or however many you need, re-install windows on whichever partition you like (maybe you want it on the SSD so it boots up faster? I dunno).  you can get windows from the microsoft web-page and burn it on a cd if you don't yet have a cd. use the windows product key on the bottom of you're laptop to activate it.  don't forget to re-install drivers from the lenovo drivers and application backup cd you made! otherwise, you're computer will not run correctly. You can decide whether you want to install the applications again, but drivers need to be installed. drivers are also available on lenovo support under drivers. edit: if you have already done this, remember that windows creates a part... I've had my system for over a year and a half now:

Vista Ultimate 32bit
Intel Q6660
3Gb ram
Nforce 780i motherboard
1x DVDrom
3x Seagate 320Gb harddrives

I've had some strange trouble regarding one of my 320Gb HDD's It goes missing in Vista.

When I start my system up, I watch the monitor. And see the DVDrom and all 3 HDD's register in Bios. But once Vista has loaded, theres only the DVDrom and 2 HDD's.

When I first purchased the system I had all three drive's acting as one 640Gb drive in a RAID config. I since had that taken down. So they should be working as 3 separate drives.

I didn't have a problem with them til about December 08, when one dissappeared under Vista. I didn't concern myself about it at the time, figuring it was a Vista issue that they would rectify in their own time.

About 3months ago. There was a breakthough, I think a Vista update sorted it out.

Until about a month ago I had all three Drives working. I think another Update went through. And now I'm back to 2 HDD's.

Everytime I restart my system. I always see all 3 HDD's recognized under BIOS. But once Vista loads. I only have the 2.

When I look in control Panel/ Administrative Tools/ Computer Management/ Storage/ Disk Management everything comes up as primary partition(in blue), and nothing as Unallocated(black)

Is there any reason I should look at motherboard drivers? Current drivers are nforce 15.23
Motherboard is 780i

The Background :
I built my new P4(3GHz) System in Dec 04. I used the same old 80Gb HDD

I got KTs in Second Yr Engineering which resulted in, me facing my Dad's
real bad temper. The worst thing was that he spent all his anger on my
beautiful System.

Now all I'm left with is a broken cabinet, Cracked MB, non-working FX5700
Ultra, a P3(700mhz) system and a hurt soul.

The Problem :
Apparantly the HDD survived all that (although the plastic around the bus
attachment area was a little broken)

It was working fine. But now after taking a 4 weeks gap to cool things down
WinXp just showed the Partitions for about a Min and it showed no more.
The Bios & XP Device manager shows the HDD, U can feel it working, but it
doesn't display the Partitions.

Please anyone help me! All my VB, Java, C, Photoshop & Flash Projects are
still in it.

Thank You

Hello,

I had to swap out the hard drive from my laptop. My last one is still functional and has Vista on it. Can I boot from it and use as if it were still inside the machine?

I tried holding down F12 and booting from External USB device and got a quick flash of a blue screen, then it booted as usual from the internal drive.

Any ideas? Does the drive HAVE to be internal to boot from?

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop and am looking into replacing the existing hard drive with a larger one. I would like to use the old one in an enclosure as an external drive for storage. Does anybody know what size enclosure I would need to get? I see they come in 2.5", 3.5", and 5.5" sizes. Thanks for your time.

Answer:Enclosure for my 27R2302 27R2303 80GB HDD 5400RPM HITACHI hard drive

You need a 2.5" enclosure. Now just be sure if you need either for a PATA or SATA hard drive. Is your hard drive connected to your laptop with a bunch of pins? If yes, that is PATA. If not, that is SATA.

I have the 80GB primary SSHD with my operating system Vista 64, and a second 250GB (5400rpm)  HDD in the second spot, I also have a new 200GB (7200rpm) available. neither second drive is formatted yet.I would like to extend the SSHD with one of the drives. Will windows (and most installed programs) continue to run quickly since it is installed on the fast SSHD?will the RPM difference of the second drive affect performance much? Please let me know if you have any experience with extending solid state drives?

Answer:dual hard drive on W700 primary 80GB SSHD and extending to another?

I think you're not getting any replies because of the word 'extended'.  the only way I know of to 'extend' is to set up RAID across drives, and I don't think that's what you mean.. I don't believe there is a way to merge multiple drives under the same drive letter. So you would have 3 seperate drives/volumes/drive letters at a minimum, I believe. Good to have the boot stuff on the SSD, and programes as well, while storing backups or bulk data on the HDDs. I have the 128G Samsung SSD, and while it definitely isn't slow, it ain't a hell of a lot faster than an HDD so far.. mine has SSD only at this point.

It is detected as being plugged in and windows goes through the found new hardware when its plugged in but i cannot access it. Could someone possibly help me with this?

See if it is visible in Disk Management and what it says about it.

How did you partition the drive? If you didn't, it should be done by you and not rely on the bad job done by manufacturers.

Right-click Computer > Manage > Disk Management.
