Preferred Solution: maxtor or seagate harddrive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Question: maxtor or seagate?

I have to choose between a maxtor HD and a seagate. they are both pretty much the same.

Maxtor / DiamondMax 10 / 300GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-150 / OEM / RoHS Compliant (Maxtor supports the EU directive for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS))

Seagate SATA 300gig 7200rpm 16mb 5yr Warranty

which one should I pick?

Answer:maxtor or seagate?

I've always favored Maxtor, but a 5-year warranty is very tempting.

I'm looking to buy a new 80-120 gb hard drive; a seagate, Western Digital, or Maxtor. Which brand should I buy? Have any of you guys had bad experiences with any of these brands?

Answer:seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

you should not really group the maxtor into that mix. out of those three brands or any other, i am almost positive it is the only manufacturer that makes an ATA133 drive.

something that crushes all of the other vanilla flavored ATA100 disks. its speed is unmatched except when talking about SATA. so if you want a fast IDE disk go maxtor. if you are looking for relaibility sacrificing speed from an IDE disk go seagate.

if you are looking at Serial ATA. . . . ask somebody else, i know next to nothing about them

...The saga of my new computers continues.

We ordered new computers with Maxtor 120 gig HD's.
When we went to pick them up they'd installed Seagates instead, should we be concerned?
Is it worth the hassle to have them changed, are Seagate, THAT bad?
Thanks

Maxtor is taken from the playing field. Apparently quality control problems were affecting an untold number of drives and their profits were cut in half over recent years.

That leaves two big players, Seagate and Western Digital. Ugh. I'm not sure I'm too happy about that. There's always Samsung too, but they aren't exactly a player.

I have a HP.pavilion a705w tower and want to clone the 5400 rpm. Hard drive to a 250 gb. 7200 Maxtor. Can I use the maxtor software that comes with the hard drive to clone the seagate 40 gb. to the Maxtor 250gb? Will there be any problems because of the two differant hard drive brands ? Thanks.

Answer:Clone Seagate to Maxtor?

No problem at all, that's exactly what the software is supposed to do.

Also added to this mix is Seagate owns Maxtor, so they're only "soft of" different brands anyway.

I already tried (4 times) cloning my HDD with the Maxtor software but that didn't work. I used the Seagate software on a Seagate HDD(120GB) and it worked perfectly. I now want to use it on my Maxtor 200GB HDD but I get a warning that the Seagate software is for Seagate HDDs. I want to clone it to use it in the same computer - Dell 2350 Dimension, 768MB of memory, P4, 2.1Ghz. Should I follow the warning? Does it matter?

Answer:Should Seagate software be used w/ a Maxtor HDD????

If it were mine I'd try it anyway, it just might work! Bill Gates put phony software warnings in Win95 that would popup when you tried installing certain (non-microsoft) products - so you would buy from him. But it was just a fake warning that the aftermarket software wouldn't work, because they did.
That could be the case here - but then again it might not really work - so be careful...

So for the longest time, I've had this weird-*censored* thing going on with my hard drives. The first drive that came with my computer was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7. It's been great.About six months ago, I picked up another hard drive, a Maxtor Diamondmax 16.The two drives hate each other.Seriously. If the Barracuda is on Master and the Maxtor on Slave, I get an N**** (should have written it down...) not found error immediately upon turning the computer on. I don't even get as far as the BIOS prompts. If I put them both on Cable Select, the same thing happens. I finally wound up slaving the Maxtor off my DVD-RW, and that sort of worked. Well, it flat-out worked. I kept an old 20GB hard drive and slaved it off the Seagate. That worked too.But now with a computer running off a rowing machine downstairs, I wanted that old 20G drive (Western Digital, just to make sure I'm hitting all the bases) down there to stick MP3s on. So it's no longer slaved off the original Seagate drive. And I wanted to use that free IDE spot to run a DVD-ROM I have but am not using. Unfortunately, the IDE cable that goes to my DVD-RW is the only one that could also reach the DVD-ROM, but it is needed to slave the Maxtor.Or rather it was. Now that there's no slave on the Seagate, the Maxtor can't be used ANYWHERE on either IDE cable or the system won't get past the first stages of startup. The computer is working right now because I've unplugged the Maxtor drive entirely. To make things slightly more annoyin... Read more

Hi all,

Lately I've noticed that Seagate seems to be making a comeback in the retail market. Not too long ago, you could walk into any computer-chain type store and your only choices were Maxtor, Western Digital or the in-house brand (CompUSA).

I've always leaned towards the Western Digital drives. I know that Seagate had a great reputation, but is it still continued today?

So what you y'all think. Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate?

Answer:Poll: Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate HDD's?

Western Digital (religiously)

I have had nothing but bad times with Maxtors.

However, If fujitsu was still making HDDs i'd go with them.

Answer:External Hard drives Maxtor or Seagate

Yes the latest drives all need ( iirc as I only looked at a handfull last week while looking into getting one myself ) USB2.0, so you would have to also buy a USB2.0 PCI addon card to run the EHD from.

on the subject of what drives, I have used, either in work or for friends, both Maxtor and Seagate drives and found them to be ok, as for one with a fan, it is an advantage to have a fan if the ones your looking at come with them especially if the room where it will be used alot is warm, but if its well ventilated then they get hot but no hotter than internals can get.

Options I ended up toying with are;

From Seagate

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usb ( USB2.0 only and slightly under your requested 300gb, max in this range is 250gb at present )

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usbfirewire ( funny enough datasheet says USB1.1 compatible, but data transfer will be much slower than USB2.0 ) reason I like this option was its stackable.

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/portable/index.html ( smaller size than what you listed but, we use these in work and they do perform well for drives that will fit in the palm of your hand )

From Maxtor

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OTIII_USB/ ( I do like the One Touch Series )

USB2.0 PCI card http://www.verbatim.com.au/products.cfm?productID=KW2580E2 no doubt you can find some at a local retaliers in either 2 or 4 port versions.

I'm shopping for advice fm this forum on external hard drive to provide for full system backups for my Dell XPS. I've read spec's on the Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital & Omega. My built in hard drive is 120gb so I probably wouldn't consider anything lower than 80gb. Any recommendations?

Answer:Advice on Maxtor & Seagate External Hard Drives

I hate to wander off track... but why external, why not internal? Faster and cheaper at least last time I checked.

As for brands, with hard drives, I am a big fan of buying the name that your confident in. If you check similar threads below, you will find most people suggest a hard drive based on their experiences, because the differences are small to non existant. I have been a Western Digital fan for many years. Since you have read specs, sounds like your way ahead of most of us already.

My Seagate 500Gb external drive is no longer recognized, its an unknown device-how to replace the small circuit board inside the external hard drives casing, which connects the psu and 27 pin (sata?) cable to the hdd? I think the board is the cause for the device not being recognized. The drive has stopped functioning, although it whirrs and its light comes on every single time I connect it to the pc. The drive and its content do not show..in devices I have an unrecognized device, and many usb devices that shouldnt be there. I found out that moving the usb cable gently at the hdd connectors end has helped show the drives content in the past, but now its not working or showing anything at all, so I think the circuit board inside the casing (that connects the hdd to the usb and power supply) may have been the problem from the start. The drive connects with a standard psu and 27 pin connector, which I think is sata.

My external hdd looks like it has a smaller version of the connection within the blue circle here (this is what the circuit board connects to), but everything else in this shot is missing (since this pic is from an internal I found off the net, not my external):

As seagate are unlikely to send me a new replacement circuit board for the external so that the hdd might function once more, I am wondering if its possible to make the hdd work on any desktop as an internal hdd? I know I can get 27 pin to usb cables, but that still leaves me needing to provide power to... Read more

Question: Maxtor Harddrive

Hello; I have an odd one. I purchased 2 Maxtor diamond plus 9, 60 gb hdd. When I installed them my bios recognizes both drives; however, after windows boots, only the master shows. I've checked the jumper settings against those listed at the Maxtor site and they are exactly as the ones shown for a master and slave. If I try to access the drive under the mamager, the machine runs in a loop. The longest I've let it run for is about 45 minutes. If I go into device mamager, I can see the hdd icon with a (!) over it, when I click on it, I'm told there are duplicate devices and a Code 42. Here'e the weird part if I select uninstall in device manager, as soon as the machine reboots, I can see the drive, can access the thing, but if I shut down or reboot for any reason, I'm back to square one. I did speak to some guy named Bob at Maxtor about this, but he was absolutely worthless, and wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise, and said it was a Windos issue. I had MS on the phoe for over an hour, and did a complette re-install of XP home and still the same thing. Any assistance is gresatly appreciated.

Answer:Maxtor Harddrive

I think you have a primary partition on both drives. From what I understand, this can sometimes cause problems with windows. Try fdisking the slave drive again and when it asks if you want to make the new partition primary say no. Maybe this will solve it.

Hey everyone, I'm new here, so please excuse my noobness

My computer is this:

512 mb PNY pc3200 ram
Chaintech VNF-250 motherboard
PNY 6800 nu graphics card
200 gb maxtor hdd
Athlon64 3000+
Windows XP Home edition SP2

So, I've been using the 200 gb harddrive with no problems, but then all of a sudden, my harddrive went to about 130 gb of space, so I thought it was weird, and I did a format of the drive. Now, only 32 gb of space is usable. I went into bios, and that's all it can see. If anyone knows how to solve this, it'd be great.

Thanks alot.

Did you do the reinstall on a FAT32 partition? If yes, then you will have to create additional partitions to make use of the rest of the disk.

Hi all,

I recently bought a new Dell computer. I wanted to install my old harddrive as a slave so I can keep my MP3 collection on there.

It's a MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 8 (40gb) ATA/133 HDD.

I have installed it as slave, formatted it and everthing seemed fine so I transferred all my MP3s to the drive.

When in playback, they distort, slow down and then quicken up again. I thought it was just the one I was playing so I tried more. I also stopped everything else from running so it was just Media player, but still the same problem.

I transferred everything back to the original drive and they play fine.

I have been told it may be the memory i'm using or the RPM that the drive is running at.

Can anyone help on this please. If I can do this without having to buy more memory (at the moment anyway) or another drive then that would be great.

I'm running XP SP2, 2.53GHz, 256mb Ram.

Thanks in advance.

I just bought a Intel 875P motherboard (D875PBZLK) and I want to get this 10,000rpm harddrive for it:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...pa=0&section=1

My question is, the interface for this harddrive is Ultra 320 SCSI 80Pin, will this fit on my new motherboard? As far as the pin. I'm not sure if this motherboard accepts the 68pin or 80pin for the harddrive. Also, would this harddrive support SATA RAID?

Answer:875P Motherboard & Maxtor Harddrive

no it woulnt that drive is a SCSI drive its a compleatly diffrent interface than IDE or SATA to get that drive to work you will have to buy a SCSI controller card and i have no idea past that because ive never taken the time to learn about it. you may wana look into the Western Digital Raptor series they come in a 36 gig and 74 gig modle and run at 10,000 RPM and are SATA drives so you can plug em stright into your bord with minimal configuration

I recently had my Maxtor drive stop working. It was no longer able to be opened, and in the device manager was listed as an unknown device. Maxtor informed me that the bridge card in the enclosure had gone bad and the fix would be to place the disk in a new enclosure. I purchased a new enclosure, removed the disk from the original Maxtor "one touch" enclosure and installed it in the new enclosure. In doing so, I changed the jumper setting to "Master", as instructed by Maxtor. I then completed reassembling the enclosure and connected it to the computer. Initially, I received the message that device could not start, (code 10). Now however, some 15 minutes later, I am back to "unknown device". When I turn the drive on, (it has an integral on/off switch,), I can hear the drive start to spin, and so, I think the disk drive itself is probably ok. What can I do to get the computer to recognize the disk drive and be usable again? I have some stuff saved on the drive, mostly music, but if I have to lose it to regain functionality, so be it. Any body got any ideas, ( besides a small explosive charge)? Please note that this unit was installed on my laptop for about 2 years without a problem. Now it works on neither computer. I am using a Dell E-520 computer running XP SP2 with a Pentium D processor

I pop the adapter in, nothing happens, plug the stuff to the computer, nothing happens. I got no clue what to do really. IF it can destroy the adapter if I put a ac adapter for a portable computer inte it while it was off, that can be it. OR if it got broken by safely lying in my bag. Just tell me how I can fix this, Please. I'm So thankful for anyone who can help me with this.

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

hello.i am new to these forums today as i am in a spot of bother.I defragmented both my internal harddrive and one of my external harddrives yesturday using perfectdisk 8.0. The internal worked fine but after defraggin my external the thing doesn't work. It also makes my computer run slow when i turn it on. For example....if i click to open my computer while the drive is turned on nothing happens except the egg timer. As soon as i turn it off the my computer screen pops up instantly.I have done a system restore but with no luck. Another point that mite be of some use is that my internal drive is lettered F. i dont know why this is. My externals are then G and C. The harddrive in question is the one lettered C. however, i have been running my computer months with this setup with no problems untill i defragmented yesturday. It holds all my music!!! I need it to return to life. It is a maxtor one touch 120gb.i would much appreciate any help. Thankyou.

Answer:maxtor external harddrive failure after defragment

The external should not be popping up as C. If the drive is in a caddy, remove it and make sure the jumpers on the back are set to slave and not master.

I noticed on these two drives they have a jumper pin on them
with jumper pin 1.5 g/sec
without jumper pin 3.0 g/sec

If my motherboard is compatible with the 3.0 g/sec transfer rate
can I pull the jumper out, or do the drives only operate at that speed in a raid configuration or is it even worth the hassle ?

Answer:Seagate 500 & 750 gig Harddrive queston

THat jumper is so that the faster Sata 2 (300Gb/s) drives will work on the older Sata (150Gb/s) sata controllers. If your controllers are Sata 2 then yo can remove the jumper and not worry about it.

Hi guys,

I'm really in desperate need of help right now. My harddrive just died and all my essays and school stuff are in it and the due dates are within days.

So I turned on my pc this afternoon, did some stuff and turned it off, then i wanted to turn it on again but the harddrive is no longer detected by BIOS.The bios gives the typical message of no harddrive detected, plz insert boot media and press a key blah blah blah.i also noticed that the whole start up becomes incredibly slow, even for loading the bios setup. I bought this new pc during xmas and its just been a lil bit over 3 months.

seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gbytes
motherboard is Asus P5QL Pro
4gig mem.
geforce 9800gt
intel 2.5Ghz

the machine's been perfectly normal for 3 months except very occassional blue screens, and now the hd is not dectected all of a sudden.

i did not install anything or remove anything in hardware/software,i tried a different sata cable for dvd-rw which is recognized by bios, plugging into a different sata plug on the motherboard, and nothing happens.

when i start the machine i can hear that there's a couple clicks in the harddrive,so obviously its still running, but after that its all silence and there's no activity at all thereafter.

does this indicate a dead harddrive that can only be replaced?is there any chance i can recover the data on the harddrive?

thx tons for any reply!!!

Answer:seagate harddrive problem

This happened like a day ago for me with the same drive. I fixed it by resetting the cmos, it was either that or the cable was loose (because i took it out and put it back in) so check the cables, if that does not do it, try a cmos flash.

EDIT: wait, the cmos flash fixed my 1tb drive, not the 7200.11, my bad.

Could a USB port be damaged when trying to attach the cable from a 1.5 T external harddrive. this harddrive was attached before I got this computer a few days ago.

Answer:Seagate external harddrive 1.5 T

Can't see why it would be?Which having said... if the drive demands more power than the pc - particularly a laptop - can deliver then possibly; but have never come across it.If the drive requires serious power i/p then use an external usb-power adapter to power it?Have you experienced this and this is why you're posting here now?

A while back I bought a Seagate 1TB harddrive, but until recently it was just stored away and not used.
Recently I wanted to expand a XP system I have containing a M4A79XTD Evo mboard, so I just popped in the 1TB. But, to my surprise, the harddrive showed up as only 32MB. So I went into Ubuntu(dualboot with XP) and format the drive, then restart. Back in XP it finally showed up as 939GB. Then I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on later, the drive was back at showing 32MB.

The only thing that worked was when I used ext2 on Ubuntu to format the drive. I wanted to do a clean OS install on the 1TB, but no OS under the sun wants to install, because it jumps back to showing 32MB. I can only store files with Ubuntu under ext2.

I've tried the drive in other computers, with various cables, external enclosures, etc.

So now my question is, do I have a nice looking paperweight, or do I miss something important?

how does Maxtor III USB2.0 external harddrive determine what to back up? Does it repeat files that you have moved to another folder, if the files have not been changed, but just moved to better organize the folders, does Maxtor make sure that the file is not duplicated? Similarly, does Maxtor backup every file that you have just "opened to look at" between backup times? If so, is it re backing up that file or what? Thanks, suziart

Answer:how does Maxtor III USB2.0 external harddrive determine what to back up?

Welcome to the CH forums.According to the Users Guide (which I understand is available as a file on the drive) you have to select which folders to backup in the configuration section of the drive setup.Users Guides can be downloaded from here.Good luck.

Hi,

Recently got a virus on my computer so decided formatting and starting fresh would be the best option. I have a 160gb Maxtor harddrive. A few months ago using Maxblast i had a problem where the harddrive would show as 163gb in the Maxblast software but then after partitioning it as NTFS 163gb it would still show in the bios as 32gb. I managed to get round this problem by using Fdisk i believe but it was that long ago i cant really remember what i did.

When i got my recent problem the first thing i did is use maxblast to format and repartition the drive not remembering what happened last time. And as before now in the bios and after reinstalling windows my 160gb drive is showing as 32gb again. I have updated the bios to the latest version had no joy. Messed about with Fdisk to no effect. Tried partitioning software like Acronis and Partition Magic. Everything i do the drive still reports as 32gb. Motherboard is an Asus P5P800-SE.

Anyone any idea's how i can sort this problem as it's driving me mad. Been on 3 days messing about with partition software trying to sort it. Any help would be much appreciated. It's not the jumpers either as some people have told me elsewhere.

Thanks.

Answer:Maxtor 6Y160P0 showing as 32gb when it's a 160gb harddrive....

Now I have just read this pretty fast but you might of said this.

On hard-drives over 32GB they all have a jumper were the Mastee/slave etc is. Now just have a look to see if the jumper is set to "Limit HDD to 32GB"... This was used for windows 95 and 98 as they did not recignise that much space.

The files that are farther away from the folder get lost before getting where I want to put them. What am I doing wrong? I've read the users guide and it was no help. Can you help me? lilart

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while.

Model ST340823A

IDE drive
Seagate 40 GB
Firmware 3.07
I have seen a lot of models that are close - just not exact match. I'd toss the drive, but there is about a years worth of photos on there that I unfortunately did not have a backup for.

Problem
- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

Question
- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

Answer:seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

Could be any of several causes:
Harddrive dead
not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)
faulty cable
faulty usb port
Is it making the same noise as in this youtube vid?

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

As the title says, my new Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not working in the 3.0 slots in the front of my computer. It only works when i plug it into one of my two 2.0 slots on the back of my computer, which are both occupied by my mouse and keyboard, both of them are not backwards compatible. When my Drive is plugged into a 3.0, absolutely nothing happens. i get a green light on the drive, but it does not show up in my bios or in "My Computer". Works perfectly fine in a 2.0 though.

My motherboard is made by gigabyte, and is only about 2 months old, and my drive is 5 months old.

Hi everyone,

this has really confused me!

I bought a network external hard drive case (NAS)

removed the Maxtor hard drive from its original external casing and put it in the new NAS, and it wont work. it says.. "device found!" then "device may not work"

however!, i put the maxtor back into the original casing, it works!

i put a WD hard drive into the new casing and that worked also!

any ideas at all?

i was thinking it might be something in the maxtor hard drives firmware or something nasty?

cheers! (and many thanks),

Chris.

Answer:Maxtor HardDrive Problem (changed external case - doesnt work now)

the jumpers MUST be set to MASTER.

unlike the WD hard drives and other makes, leaving the jumper out will not make it work.

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Answer:Seagate Replica (2T External Harddrive) GoFlex Desk

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recover... Read more

Answer:External 1TB harddrive(Iomega - seagate inside) RAW drive

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

As you can see from these images non of the fixes on the fourm, or on seagate work. If you have any fix please reply to this post as soon as you can, or on the other hand any questions. I will be very grateful.

Sorry about the thumbnail, Not sure what happened there.

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"
luk to you.....

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

I got my gaming pc up an runing again but it wont see the drive the first time I booted.  So since I changed the MB I thought about just formating them.  Thing is these are "MAXTOR DRIVES" so I went to use Maxblast since that how I do mostly all my drives.  Also, since most are maxtor.  It came up saing that it couldnt find any ATA drives or any at all, once I got in.  But it seen that I had one that wasnt being used as my boot drive an not part of the system.  So I dont now since this is usually how I setup my drives.

Answer:Maxtor Unformateable Drives Maxtor Brand??

Now I'm missing 11 mb on drive E?  Some reason XP labeled as that an wants to know if I want to format it.

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

Hi all!

My 30gb Maxtor is acting funny for a few days now. At times I’ll get a balloon popup in the system tray saying, “New Hardware Found” and the name of it is “Laxtnr” I go into device manager and sure enough Maxtor is now Laxtnr! At times it’s accessible under that name and other times it’s not. I uninstall the Laxtnr drive and then search for hardware changes and then Laxtnr will now become Maxtor! I ran SeaTools and it passed all tests so what the heck?

Answer:Maxtor to Laxtnr back to Maxtor

The SoftSonic motor is a new, engineering breakthrough feature of Seagate's sound barrier technology (SBT). Using industry-standard tests, the Barracuda ATA IV one-disc model emits only 2.0 bels while spinning and 2.4 bels while seeking; the human ear can't hear sounds below 2.5 bels. Seagate's SBT also reduces noise using specialized seek algorithms, SeaShield. top cover and internal dampers, resonance reduction, spin commutation and other mechanical and materials design optimizations.

Hi, trying to reformat a laptop and a re-install Windows XP. Getting the "unable to delete extended partitions while logical drives exist" message in Fdisk, but all logical drives have been erased.I don't know what make of HDD the laptop has, but am I safe to use the Seagate Disk Wizard Starter Edition to erase/zerofill the drive ready for XP to go back on?Thanks.

Answer:Using Seagate Starter Disc on Non-Seagate drive,

Might not be a good idea, as all it does is little more than FDISK or Windows XP Setup. Yes, Windows XP Setup. Simply pop the CD in the drive, restart the laptop (to boot from the CD) and it will give you a screen allowing you to choose your partitions and filing systems. For safety, use NTFS file systems. When you press the Continue key (F9 I think), it will then re-partition and format your drives for you!Howzat?

Diagnostic Tool.Ok, HDD got winxp installed fine, but I always like to check the HDD when there new so I downloaded the Seagate HDD for my SATA HDD and it will go to 99% only of the Short Diagnostic test boot from floppy. My Motherboard doesn't have SATA II and the HDD is a SATA II but there are no required jumper settings required to knock it back to 150 SataSop because it will not let me test the hdd would you suspect I have a problem with the HDD ?

Answer:Seagate ST380817AS will not test with Seagate

If XP is installed fine and you can read and write to the drive then I wouldn't worry.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows Setup Disk cannot find Harddrive, even with a brand new harddrive installed.

Hi, and welcome to TSF. If it's still under warranty I would take it back to the suppliers.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

Tom

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

Answer:New harddrive from lenovo to replace my dead old harddrive

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

Hi all!

I recently purchased a new WD Cavier Black with the 32 MB cache. I would like to transfer all my HD contents [including windows vista ultimate] from my older WD 16MB cache HD to this brand spanking new WD Cavier Black HD.

Is it possible to do this without flaws and so that it will work exactly as before?

If yes, can you direct me to the correct information to do this please?

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The system in which I would like to do this has these components:

Thermaltake M9 Cool Case
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit w/SP1
Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L
Intel Q6600
Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

Thank you in advance for any help!

Answer:External Harddrive from Old Computer Harddrive

Any 3.5" IDE compatible drive enclosure will do the trick. I use a ThermalTake enclosure myself (same as MadDog and CompUSAs no-name brand).

My grandma needed more harddrive space on her pc so I installed an 80 gb harddrive on her pc. Right now it's just her slave drive. Her c harddrive is only 20gb, so could I just copy everything on that harddrive to the 80gb and make that the master hard drive and the old one the slave? Or would that cause problems? I want to do this so she can continue saving files to her c harddrive instead of a different harddrive.

Answer:Is it posible to change the c harddrive to another harddrive?

You would need to create an image of the the current 20GB drive and map it onto the 80GB drive (most ghosting/imaging utilities allow you to expand the 20GB partition to the full size of the drive without issue). The most common way to go about doing this is with Norton Ghost, but it's not free. There's a few Linux boot disks that can do it as well I believe, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a free boot disc.

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

Answer:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

It also looks like this various version of the adapter

They all work..

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.
