I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: New 250gb hd 131 showing? Partition Help??

Plain-Jane XP by default will only recognize drives up to 132GB. If you create an SP2 slipstreamed CD using autostreamer, it will recognize the full drive upon install. Or, complete your install, update to SP2 and then use the "diskmgmt.msc" command in the "run" line to format the remaining hard drive as a second partition.

this summer i built myself a new computer. i was having sum trouble getting windows installed and thought it might be 1 of the HD's so i unhooked it. once i got it going i kind of forgot about the 250GB HD until just recently. i hooked it up and formatted it but it only showed up as a 127GB HD when it's supposed to be 250GB. this is very puzzling because on the post screen it clearly reads that it's a 250GB HD.

can someone please tell me what i hav to do to get it working correctly because i'd really like to move my music off of my dad's comp. btw, my system specs are in the sig

Answer:250GB HD showing up as 127GB!?

Hi to allI have just installed Maxtor 250GB HD into my P4 PC. Cmos bios reports the HD as 250GB during POST and Win XP C: drive properties reports that capacity is 250GB and used space is 134GB!!The only thing on the drive is the OS (winXP) it was brand new I partitioned/ formatted it using my XP cd. If I look at the properties individually on C: drive (windows, program files, docs and settings, etc) they add up to approx 1.5GB but C: properties is 134GB?any suggestions as to why XP is reporting the use incorrectly and a possible fix much appreciated.TIA

Answer:250GB HD showing too big used space

I recently installed a pair of 160gb drives and found on the Maxtor site that in order for the true capacity to be recognised by Windows you need 2 things[otherwise it only recognises up to 137gb];1 - to be running Windows SP12 - to run the Maxtor Big Drive Tool[available from Maxtor support website]

Can you see it in Disk Management? (right click on My Computer and select Manage, then go to Storage > Disk Management). Disk Management (What It Is and How To Use It)
Is it showing the drive? Does it show the total disk size?

I had a 250GB SATA HDD laying around with multiple with a couple of so I ordered an enclosure. Installed easily, everything was compatible. I used the format option from right clicking the drive in "My Computer" I formated it and I can only format it to 9.40GB using NTFS. How do I make it so I can use my entire 250GB?

Answer:External Hardrive 250GB but only Showing 10GB

Start>Right click on My Computer>Manage>Disk Management.

See if there is any other partitions on there. Also i would recommend using one of the Disk Formatting tools in the Windows Index Stickies link in my sig. In that Index there is a topic called Recommended Software for certain tasks. At the bottom of the first post you will see Formatting tools. GParted, DBan, KillDisk will get the job done for you.

I had a password locked HD(30Gb), that I finally gave up on. I purchased a 250Gb replacement drive. When I go into the bios to check to see if the system detects it, it show 137Gb, when it did not show anything with the locked HD. I also check to see if there was a bios update, but there was none, just the same as what's already on my 1100. I thought I'd try to use the new drive, while I wait for another replacement, it started to format at 250Gb.

I just wondering why it shows 137Gb. I know this is an issue with some older bios and P3 systems, but I did not expect it with a P4 system.

Anyone else experience this? Any problems if I keep the 250Gb installed, or should I order a 120Gb.

TIA

Answer:New 250Gb showing 137Gb on a Dell 1100 bios

Usually this problem is caused by formatting the drive with a verision of Windows XP that has no Service Pack, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 1a. None of those will format higher than 137 GB.
If you switch to an install disk with Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3, you can format up to 1.5 Terrabytes without problems.
Alternately, once you format at 137 GB, use a partition editor such as Ghost, Partition Magic, Source Forge, or Acronis (I recommend Acronis)... to extend the partition to the full size of the hard drive.
Either way, you have a cost.

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

Hi folks,

I recently bought a new Hitachi 250GB SATA hard drive and created one primary partition of full size using Partition Magic on a boot disk. I then installed windows xp on it (no service packs). Straight after install I noticed it showed as a 232GB drive (fair enough) but also said around 113GB of space had been used.

I have now installed some more applications and the total file size of everything on the drive totals 24.1GB. My C drive shows 134GB used with 98.3GB free.

I guess it's something to do with partitioning larger HD's but I'm new to all that so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It's a brand new unused hard drive, and I just want to know once and for all: is there an optimal size to make the system partition when setting up a hard drive? And this one may sound stupid, but I figure it's better to ask and know and be embarrassed than to never know anything for sure at all and inevitably make yourself look stupid at some point, so - so once I've installed Windows, in order to make best use of having made two partitions, do I then just move the whole Users folder over to the other partition?

Answer:How big should I make the system partition on a 250GB HDD?

if youre going to run windows 7 the OS alone is going to take upwards of 20 Gigs, I cant speak for Windows 8 but I would say somewhere around 20-30 Gigs (there are a lot of laptops sold with a small SSD for the OS and typically they are either 24 or 32 Gigs) should be more than enough space with updates and system restore information.

Just make sure that you install programs on the other partition.

Dear everyone,

I just noticed a 101 MB Unallocated partition at the start of my SSD BOOT Drive. It works fine nevertheless.

Look below:

In Diskpart it shows the following, it is "reserved":

Wasn't this supposed to be the 100MB "system" partition? Meaning if I like to run a Recovery from Partition 5, it would have been Partition 4 before the restore of Acronis? I am not sure what I am saying actually hehe. Should I leave the 101MB reserved or is there any possibility to successfully add this reserved space to the OS partition?

Now I am uncertain if this was here before I had to do a restore of my earlier made backup with Acronis True Image 2014. I always use the CD to boot and don't make any backups in Windows. I did read something on Acronis forums regarding this, but I am unfamiliar with all these technical details. Actually, all other partitions show up in the order as I had before the backup.

Does someone here know about this and if this is fine or can I run into "problems" with some programs or anything?

Well, after some more digging myself I found that partition 1 above should normally between the efi partition and the boot c system partition. So in my case between partition 2 and 3. But it is unallocated and partition 1? Hope this still can be fixed without needing to reinstall everything because that would be a disaster (for me at least).

Answer:Unallocated space as the first partition of my 250GB SSD.

Hey guys,

I have a home made computer, System is running off a 250gb hard drive. When I first formatted it, it was showing 232gb (this was ages ago) but somewhere along the way it has changed to 184gb. If I open disk management it shows the drive cannot be extended to fill the space, and even shows that 184gb is the maximum that can be used. However when I use diskpart to look at it in command prompt it shows 232gb as the size of the drive. I have tried extend in diskpart, but it does not let me fix the problem.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1.

Would love any help that anyone can give me!

Thanks.

Answer:[SOLVED] 250gb (232gb formatted) drive showing as 184gb?

Welcome MrMatt90.

Does your system only have one hard drive?

Is the drive you mention the one with your Operating System installed on?

Have you created any backups?

Are there any partitions?

When was the last time you ran chkdsk? I suggest you run it on your drive...
> - Click the start globe/button
> - type cmd and run cmd.exe as administrator
> - type chkdsk /r ?: (replacing the ?: with the drive letter, probably c:)
> - it will ask to run scan on next restart, type Y and restart.

To reduce the size of the system partition in order to create a new, second partition, there are several third-party solutions for doing that, two of which are:

Hello,
My 250GB SATA is partitioned in TWO separate ones, and I just installed Win7 Ultimate x64 on the smaller partition that have assigned for the OS. The installation went fine and everything seems OK, but the thing is that I can NOT have access to the other partition (the one previously there).
In the Disk Management, I can clearly see the two partitions, and the non OS on reads as: Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition). But the explore, open, extend volumem and other features are grayed-out)

Oh, the OS partition has the option to Mark Partition as Active. What is this?
Please advise how can I fix this, since I have tons of data on the non OS partition and I need to get to them ASAP!

Thanks!

Answer:250GB SATA HDD: Win7 Partition Issue

If it was me, I'd stop what you are doing and use a tool to pull your files off to an external drive, like Bart PE. Never mess with partitions if you have important data, or else it can't be that important to you.

Then, clear the drive, install the OS and then restore your data.

I have been trying for a few days now to get Partition Magic 8 to partition my existing C: drive. First I was getting the "Error 983" error. Then I un-installed SP2 which was causing a gang of problems, freezing programs for a couple mins mostly. After I got it uninstalled I did a disk defrag, then a chkdsk /f. Now I have partitioned the drive using PM8 again and this time after the reboot it is telling me it is completed but once Windows XP reboots there is no new partition.

Im trying to install Suse Linux 9.0. But I really want to have 2 new partitions, one for Suse, and the other as a back up. Im not really sure how to solve this now so if any one could help I would really apprecate it.

If you could help me with this I would highly appreciate it!!!!

I'm working on a friend's PC which had Vista installed. Vista was installed on the first partition of the hard drive. The second partition was for back up files such as docs, music, vids, pics, etc.

I installed W7 on the first partition. But it isn't detecting the 2nd partition when I pull up My Computer.

I went into Disk Management, and the following shows the partitions. The 2nd partition doesn't have a drive letter. When I right click it, the only option that comes up is "Help".

As you can see in the image. The top one with no letter isn't showing up in My Computer.

Answer:Help! Partition not showing up in My Computer

Hello Crimson,

Since the 2nd 142.94 GB partition has nothing on it, see if you could delete that partition in the command prompt using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below. This will leave this as "unallocated space". Be sure to use the correct listed volume # for the 142.94 GB volume/partition.Partition or Volume - Delete
Afterwards, see if you may be able to create a new volume in Disk Management or command prompt with the now 142.94 GB "unallocated space".Partition or Volume - Create New
Hope this helps,

Hey guys,

I have a 1 TB external HD that is broken up into three partitions. For some reason, only two of three partitions will appear in Windows Vista. When I had it connected to my now out-of-commission desktop which ran XP, all partitions showed up and were accessible with no problem.

Can anyone offer any insight as to what's causing this and/or how to fix it? As luck would have it, my entire music library is on the one partition that won't show up, so I've been unable to access my music since my desktop has been down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Help with external HD (partition not showing up)...

Check for assigned drive letter in Vista. it could also be a corruption problem with the partition, or a format that cannot be read by Vista.

What is the third partition formated to?, and have you tried running Check disk on the external?

Answer:Screenshot showing one partition/ should i have another?

Quote:
New SSD and not sure if it's wise to have two partitions instead of just one or does it matter?

There is no need to partition. Partitions are really just for user convenience and in fact, can actually degrade performance on hard drives (though we're talking a few scant milliseconds).

What often happens, especially with smaller drives, is the user allocates too little for the boot partition and fails to consider the inevitable consumption of disk space due to Windows Updates, patches, driver updates, Page File usage, program installs, etc. So sometime down the road, the user is forced to start over, or attempt to resize the partitions - a risky procedure even with the best partition managers.

If that is a ~250 - 265Gb SSD then, if me, I would leave it as it is.

Almost certainly being used by System Restore (hidden restore files in your System Volume Information folder). Can also be hibernation if enabled (hiberfil.sys in the root of c: drive). You can also check the Temp folder.

Have any of you ever seen an NTFS file system suddenly appear to be a FAT file system?

Last night after installing a Windows update, upon reboot my BIOS did not see my HDD or optical drive. There were also a few settings that were off a bit in the BIOS settings. After fixing the BIOS, POST was showing both drives but Windows did not want to load; it just hung at the Windows splash screen. This morning the machine was doing the same thing, but this time ended up running CHKDSK which ran successfully, however it is now telling me that NTLDR is missing.

I have gone through the process of running the Recovery Console on my XP CD.

When booting into a BartPE disk, some recovery and disk information applications show the 250GB drive as a 10MB FAT partitioned drive. Others show the drive as having an NTFS structure and 250GB. Needless to say, I am unable to get any information off of this disk so that I can start over.

Any ideas? System info is in sig.

Answer:NTFS Partition showing up at FAT?!?

I'd say that if none of the recovery applications you have tried will allow you to access any data, you'll have to take the loss and repartition the drive, if it is not physically damaged, in which case, you'll need a new drive. Probably not the case though. I would suspect the 10MB FAT is just an error from a corrupted drive. I have seen Windows update destroy two perfectly good Vista installations in the last 6 months. We just reformatted them and reinstalled. Fortunately we have full backups.

Hello and good day,
So if you are installing Windows 8 on an Intel based MAC you should probably try an appropriate Apple Forum. It is unlikely that bootcamp would have all the proper drivers for W8 to work, but maybe someone on the Apple forum might know better.

Attempting to reload win7, this dell desktop has 3 partitions showing as follows:

DISK 0 Partition 1 OEM 3.0MB
DISK 0 Partition 2 Recovery 12.3GB
DISK 0 Partition 3 OS Primary 285.7GB

First issue, when I had looked  for a Recovery partition in My Computer in windows, nothing was showing except for the C drive so I am not understanding why in the BIOS that 12.3gb Recovery partition is there? Also what's the purpose of the 3.0MB OEM partition please?

Answer:Why is a Recovery Partition showing in the BIOS?

You do not see it because I think there is no drive letter assigned to the partition. The 3MB partition I believe is Dell's diagnostic tools but I am not sure. It could also be the initial start of the recovery manager you access by tapping F8 > Repair Computer > Dell Recovery Partition

You can see your partition by opening a command prompt and typing the following

diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
list volume   Will show all drive letters on the computer
list partition  Will show all partitions on disk 0
exit

hi i am trying to reformat my friend's comp, when i load up the xp cd, and reboot and it goes to the part where you delete or create a new partition, none of the partitions show up. Can anyone explain to me on how to fix this problem?

Answer:Hello need help Partition not showing up when trying to do a fresh install

Hi Choad !

Make sure you use an XP SP3 CD, google for "slipstream SP3" if needed.

If the hard drive is sata you may need to press F6 to load third party SATA/RAID drivers from a floppy when the message appears at the bottom of the install screen or the hard drive won't be detected. Get those drivers from the motherboard's manufacturer's website. Give us the exact brand and model of the computer or of the motherboard if you need help. If there's no floppy drive then you'll need to slipstream those drivers on the XP CD.

What OS was installed on the computer before ? If the partitions were ext2 or ext3 (linux) then windows can't see them. If you don't care about the old content of the drive and just want a fresh start use dban to wipe the drive (it will erase all partitions and their content) and get rid of anything that could come in the way.

Hi Guys,

I had a test version of windows 7 installed on my Sata drive which had 3 partitions on it (c:40gb, d:40gb, e:220). This worked fine.

I decided that i liked Windows 7 so i wanted to re-install it on a permanent basis so i went through the installation, formatted C: ONLY and installed windows 7 as a fresh copy. During installation, i noticed that c: & d: showed up correctly but e: was not showing. Instead, there was a 220gb unallocated space. I thoughht i'd ignore this as i have a lot of files on e: and i hoped that when i finished installing win7 on C: then E: would show up correctly.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. I cannot see e: in my computer. When i go to disk management, i can see the 220gb space but no drive letter is assigned to it. Furthermore, when i right-click on the space, i cannot do any task (i.e. assign drive letter) except delete. Everything else is disabled. Also, the disk space being shown is size=218gb, free=218gb.

This looks like Windows 7 has decided to delete my drive without my permission. I have done absolutely nothing to the partition during or after installation yet i can't get it working.
I had quite a bit of work on this partition and i was wondering:

a) whether i can get the partition to work correctly on Win 7 without deleting/formatting?

b) if i have to format the partition, is there a way i can get my data off the partition (if it is still there)?

Regards,

Shuja

Welcome!

Because it does not show you "New Volume", I doubt it actually deleted it.

Try using recovery tools such as the free Diskdigger.

Just installed 8.1 on one of my machines. The 100 mb "system reserved" boot partition is showing up as drive E in the drives. It does not show on my other Win 8 machine. Why would this be?
It's not hurting anything but it's kind of annoying and in the way. Is there some way to hide it?
Thanks for your help
Jim

Answer:Boot Partition Showing in Drives

It always has shown up in Computer Management. It is just that Windows 8.1 does it a different way in how it partitions the drive. That Boot Partition is for UEFI and has to stay.

As for annoying. Not if you do not go into Computer Management. Any partition will show up. There is no way to hide it.

I have a dual boot system with xp and then vista installed first. Everything has worked well until I did something with partition magic 8.0 in xp (it said the partitions were "BAD") and now I cannot boot into vista (I get a blue screen but cannot see what it says). I installed vista on a seperate hard drive and I can see the partition that the dual boot vista is installed on but it has no drive letter - in xp it shows a drive letter (paging file) and says that everything is ok.
I have performed check discs, tried to repair the vista in dual boot with the vista disc and have tried to reformat the partition but it will not let me! I have tried to boot into safe mode but no joy.
I am looking at having to wipe the hard drive with the dual boot installation and then reinstalling both which will be a pain.
Is there anyway to get a drive letter back when all normal partition tools block access to that partition?

Hi all,

i just converted from win xp to win7. For certain reason i am late to install. After installing the OS, i found one my partition is still missing. The partition was formerly used to be the C: in the intial time. But after finding the Bad sector over there, i have seperated some cluster in to another drive. Now every time i am installing win 7, that specific drive is not showing as it is still thinking as system drive. i have 80GB hard drive. can any one help me out how to get back that drive. i really need this. My memory running out fast.

Diskpart is showing 6 drives that i used to have, but win 7 is showing only 5. the volume 1, which is named extra is missing, but the name is interchanged with another drive which is volume 6 now. Diskpart image is from current win 7.

attaching files to easy understand.

Answer:Hdd partition hidden/not showing in windows 7

Follow this :
Part 1:
Windows will be aware your new HDD exists as a piece of hardware, BUT it still will not show up in My Computer. You need to use Windows Disk Management to do two jobs: Partition and Format that new unit. Click on Start at bottom left and in the menu RIGHT-click on My Computer and choose "Manage" from the mini-menu to open a new window. On its left click to expand "Storage" if necessary and choose "Disk Management". This will open two panes on the right, each of them scrolling to reveal their whole contents. The upper one shows you only the devices Windows already knows how to use. The lower one also shows you the hardware Windows can see, including some devices Windows does not yet understand. Each device is represented by a large horizontal block. On its left end is a smaller label block with things like "DISK_0", a size, and a few other bits of info. To the right will be one or more large sub-blocks representing Partitions already defined. Each of these will have a letter name like your C: drive, its size and File System, and a bit more. If there is some space not yet assigned to a Partition, it will be a block further to the right called "Unallocated Space". The main block representing your optical drive will not have all this stuff because you cannot define a Partition on such a device.

On my other computer I was doing a reformat with windows 7 and everything went smooth. I then was trying to merge unallocated space(was oem partition) with C drive using "Partition Magic". Partition Magic came up with some errors and asked me if would like to fix the errors, so I clicked yes and the program closed. I checked disk management to see if the unallocated space had been merged, but it hadn't. I then decided to remove Partition Magic using control panel. When I clicked to uninstall, my computer shut-off randomly and windows would not boot. So I then decided to reformat again by booting from disc, but when trying to install, C drive did not show up. The only thing that showed up was D(Recovery) and the unallocated space from earlier. Keep in mind this is the only hdd in the computer. Please Help.

Hello everyone,

Even though this is my first post, i'm a regular reader of various posts here.

I have a DELL-XPS13 Laptop. After upgrading it from win8 to win10, i noticed a restore partition is getting showed up in explorer as Z drive.

When I open Disk Management, i do not see this Z drive assignment to the drive.

I do not know how i can hide this drive.

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Hi, there's going to be a way in Windows, but I don't know offhand. So I'd turn to a partition manager, e.g. Easeus Partition Manager. (The Pro version is regularly given away). (There are many, and their boot disks can be useful in an emergency).

This Windows 7 laptop got some heavy malware, initially I tried to run the recovery but when I opened the Recovery partition on the D drive, there were no files to be found BUT when I look at the Recovery D drive in MY COMPUTER, it is showing 2.80GB free of 17.6GB and the blue line is almost at the end suggesting there are files in that partition. I chose the "Show hidden files" option but still no files to be found so I am not understanding why it's showing like the recovery parition is almost filled with data?

Answer:HP dv5 Recovery partition files not showing?

Boot the computer from a Linux Live CD/DVD/USB-key and you should be able to see what's in there.

A Live CD/DVD or USB flash drive contains a complete bootable computer operating system (OS). When you boot a computer from it, the OS loads into and runs from memory instead of a hard drive. This allows you to run an OS without installing it or making any changes to a computer's current configuration.
To create one, download an ISO file containing the OS you want to use, (such as Ubuntu, Slax or Zorin), then use something like ISO Recorder to burn it to a CD/DVD or USB key. Now boot your computer from that disc/key and your computer is now running that OS instead of the one on its hard drive.

Answer:Dual Boot 7/XP Partition Not Showing

First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware on the manufacturer's web site.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

Hi

I have a two laptops with Windows 10 x64. Recently I noticed new partition with next available letter. Size is 128mb and it can't be accessed. I checked in Disk Management but this partition is not listed there as per the below screen:

I used MiniTool Partition Wizard and managed to see details about this partition.

I tried Diskpart to remove Drive Letter but no luck:

This happened at the same time on my two HP laptops but not sure what could cause it. Maybe some Windows update? I do not remember installing any new apps. I would like to remove this disk from the list of available disks.

Can anyone suggest/advise how I can remove this from the list?

Thanks

You never selected the volume so you can't remove the drive letter assignment - that's what the command response tells you. do a "list vol" to show list of volumes and confirm its volume number then do "select vol ___" (insert volume number) to put focus on that volume and then "remove" should work.

This appears to be your MSR partition (apparently created in Win8/Win8.1 install before upgrading to Win10). Should not have a drive letter at all.

Do you know that you are booting OK in UEFI mode ? It certainly looks like you have a GPT disk, although it's a bit mis-mashed due to upgrade process.

I upgraded my new refurbished Dell 15 7000 from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now, my hidden recovery drives are showing on "My Computer". On Windows 8, they were hidden so the user, or softwares, can't access the partitioned recovery drives.

After upgrading to windows 8.1, they are all visible on "My Computer" and files are be written on them. How can I hide these drives? I am afraid of doing Windows Update or installing Office 365 since they extract the files on a different drive and move them back to C drive.

I am experiencing the same issue as with jenny123 but with an additional problem. I am troubleshooting a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive for my buddy. It is previously working but one day, it is not detected anymore by any device. It is found in the Disk Management however, it is listed as Unknown, Not Initialized, and not showing the partition as shown in the screenshot.

When I try to change it from Offline to Online, I am encountering the error:
"Virtual Disk Manager: The system cannot find the file specified"

I also used the DISKPART in cmd but it is not showing Disk 1 as shown below.

The external hard drive is found in disk drives but it is not showing it's model name.

I tried all the recommended software (partition wizard, testdisk, icare) but still no luck. I also tried searching online for an answer but there's no closure to their issues as well. Hope someone can help on this as he need a) the drive and b) recover the files in the external drive. Thanks!

EDIT: The drive can be seen in the Devices and Printers as shown below.

Answer:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

Hi

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

My K partition is of 24.3GB and says that only 3.80GB is free.

However in reality, the data inside is worth only 14.3GB which means 10GB should be free, not 3.80GB.

What could be the problem? I have attached the screenshot too.

Even though there are no hidden files in this partition, I enabled 'View Hidden Items'. And the size is indeed 14.3GB only. So I wonder where my remaining 6.20GB is going!

Hi. Hope someone can help here. I don't know what I've done but...........I have a 140gb Sata hard drive which I use as a secondary drive for documents, photos, music etc. Problem is I can't use it all. There's only 14gb usable space. The rest shows up, in computer management, as 135gb free space. When I right click and use the new logical disk manager it goes through to the end then puts up a message saying:Logical Disk Manager. An unexpected error has occured. Check the System Event log for more information on the error. Close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Manager or restart copmputer.I've tried both but it does the same again. System Event log gives the date and time of the event, Source says LDM, Category says none, Event says 2. I've no idea what this all means.I know I need to make a logical partition but I don't know how.I'm running XP service pack2 fully updated. The Sata drive was formatted NTFS previously and was usable, as I've said I can't remember what happened to create this situation. Thanks for any help given.

Hi Folks,

Coming from a pc that i built my own with windows 7 to a windows 8 Sony vaio pro 13 laptop was not easy for me recently .

long story short, i was trying to install Ubuntu alongside windows 8.1 pro. However, that was very unsuccessful, due to a what i think UEif, secure boot and some other reasons that im still unsure of. Now regardless of all that, i think during the process of trying to solve that problem and get linux running as a secondary os on my laptop, i did something wrong. i did play with partitions however l i do not remember touching any of the recovery partitions. i also downloaded two softwares to try and boot linux which are :

-EasyBCD - boot management
-Ease Partition Master - partition management

after so many failed attempted i thought to my self that maybe i should re-install windows and everything. Sony Vaio laptops have a button called Assist, when pressed it will boot to Sony diagnostics and recovery tools. Thar recovery tool usually allows you to format your laptop and re-installs everything along with all the softwares that sony provided with the laptop. That did not work for me for the first time since i got the laptop i tried different methods including advanced startup all option can;t seem to find the recovery partition. Hi,
Did you create the partition using a Linux operating system? If you did, then that's why it's not showing up.

To get it to show, go into your Disk Management (Start>Search "Disk Management">Create and format disk partitions), and delete the partition. Then, create it again and format it. It should now show up. Reply if you have any concerns or problems.

Did you initialize that partition before you put data on it. But if you want to do it now, save your data first. Try using a live Linux distro. That may work.

Who knows what Partition Magic does. That is an old defunct program that has not been updated in 5 years. Next time use Disk Management or Partition Wizard.

Hi all,

I used Killdisk from LSoft to erase my harddrive and everything seemed to work fine. Then I opened [email protected] Partition Manager and it's showing a 3MB partition labelled X:BOOT. This partition doesn't show in Killdisk, just in Partition Manager, and Partition Manager can't delete it without giving an error. Does anyone know what this might be?

Googling hasn't turned up much, but could it be related to the virus problem these people were having:

Partition Virus/Non-system Drive Virus
Kaspersky Lab Forum > Alureon.E

The partition doesn't show up in Parted Magic either. I'll attach a screenshot from [email protected] Partition Manager.

Please help

Answer:Mystery 3MB Partition still showing after full disk wipe

I ran into that bugaboo on a HDD I salvaged from my old XP machine that had the OS installed on it. I tried everything I could think of and actually managed to reduce it 9MB but it wouldn't completely go away until I tried formatting it, then deleting it or merging it with the rest of the HDD (I don't remember which now).

Hello, Seven Forums! I've been lurking about for a bit, and have been able to find all the answers to my problems here just by searching. Until Now. I've been trying to create a hard drive partition to dual wield Windows 7 and Windows 8, but when I go to shrink C: to create the new partition, it says "Querying Volume for available shrink space, please wait..." for about five minutes. Now I'm fine with this, but when that finishes, I get this.

So, I mentally "Hmm" and head on over to my disk properties, and find exactly what I was expecting to find.

Next, I tried using the command prompt (Tutorial I clicked in Pic 1) to shrink the volume, but that told me there wasn't enough space either. What do I do? Smash my computer? Open obscure files? Abandon ship?

Answer:Hard Drive Showing no space to create partition

This is normal. The MFT which is sitting high up on the partition is blocking it and Disk Management cannot move the MFT.

If you want to shrink it, you have to use the bootable CD of Partition Wizard. That can move the MFT. Have a look at Option 3 here - but instead of shrinking on the left side I would shrink on the right side (same procedure).

To be safe, make an image of C before you manipulate it. Better be safe than sorry.

Hello

Short story. Western Digital Elements Drive 3TB use for back up and today wouldn't power.
Swapped all cables no luck.
Removed hard drive from Caddy housing and mounted in rig direct to motherboard.
The hard drive is readable but appears something has happened to the partition (without me doing any tasks etc to it).
The hard drive was 1 single partition with quite a lot of data.
The drive now in the rig is showing as 3 partitions (raw data). This is now showing as 2 partitions since loading in system rig and converting from MBR to GPT. Snapshot below.
I have not reformatted the drive and the drive is showing as inaccessible in windows.
(I have just ordered another 3TB drive to try to recover the data too.)

Questions:

1 - Any ideas what would cause this issue with the partitions as has baffled me and made me more cautious in recovery routes and options.
2 - Before I try Recuva on the drive (which I assume I will need to format the drive first to attempt this). What is the best steps to take before attempting to recover the data.
3 - Any other software that is going to do a better job than Recuva?
4 - Anything else to try before I do down route 2.

Thanks for your help. Normally I have back ups. But there's a large chunk of photos and other data I had yet to back up to my secondary back up drive

Thanks for your help

Answer:Hard Drive seems corrupt. 1 Partition now showing as 3 Partitions?

Hi mfx

Likely the faulty hard drive caddy. See @clam1952 in thread below.
@spunk has suggested other software that you may want to investigate. Ignore my post in that thread. (Same thread below)

May be @SOHO1 can post what software he used to fix.

What is a RAW drive and how do I fix it?

This has suddenly happened, explorer is missing the 'space' information from the display.

The build up to this was simply creating a Windows disk image using W10's own utility. Mysteriously the space bar on the problem partition showed some usage, about 1.7Gb but nothing could be found in the partition. I've even tried deleting the partition in Disk Management and reassigning a drive letter but nothing gets the display back.

Any ideas ?

Answer:Explorer suddenly not showing free space for one partition.

Have you tried renaming the drive with a shorter name. The long description has caused the line to wrap and this might have obscured the details. I have not tested this but it was just a thought based on what I see in your image.

Hi there,

I've a Hitachi 500GB SATA HDD, Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. The other day i was just playing around with Disk Management and unintentionally right clicked on one of my drives and clicked "Rescan". The Disk Management did something for a while and then my PC restarted and that particular drive disappeared in my computer. Although I'm able to see the partition in Disk management but not in the list of volumes but in the bottom view of my disk. That partition does not have a Drive letter, I've tired to change the drive letter but it says "the disk management view is not up to date" I've tried some partition Manager software to assign a letter to my drive but all in vain. I've also found a solution to the error "the disk management view is not up to date" by updating my windows but that too didnt work for me. I've very important data on that drive and i really want it back. Tried every single thing googling around and used DiskPart in MS Dos also, nothing worked. Any suggestions?

I am trying to find more storage space on my 750gb desktop hard drive.

The OS (C) partition is 191 GB with 15 GB of free space left. I have checked the contents of this partition and
am able to find a total of only 80 gb which comprise of the following large folders

User Files 48gb
Windows 15gb
Program Files 8gb
Recovery 9gb there are many smaller files that add up to less than 1gb

The total folders on this partition add up to about 81gb yet the drive is showing only 15gb of free space left
There are 95gb unaccounted for......What am I missing here?

Answer:190 gb OS (C) partition showing 95gb of files with 15gb free???

Run WizTree (free) to see what it shows, they have a portable version available.

I downloaded and installed PartitionMagic 8.1 DEMO. However, when I started it up, I get my 1.5 GB drive #1 shows as a 860 GB, yes that's GB, not MB, and my 60GB drive #2 shows as 950 GB.

PowerQuest will not offer support because I don't own the software. Why would I buy software that doesn't work?

Anyway, I'm using WIN98SE, to re-partition my 1.5 GB drive to include a 500 MB drive for NT 4.0. The drive is currently FAT32.

There isn't any error messages or any other problems with the software, just that it shows I have some 859 GB of unallocated space on drive #1, which means I can't resize my 1.5 GB partition.

Thanks for ANY help.

I upgraded to Windows 8 last night, and encountered a lot of problems. My dual screen was not working, all drivers had been lost. However after upgrading to Windows 8.1, thankfully some have been fixed. However my biggest problem is that I have lost all my programs even though I installed it on a different partition of my hard drive.
So when I was upgrading to Windows 8 from Windows 7, I did a custom install. I formatted my C:Drive since there wasn't enough memory. I thought I would have kept all my programs since it was installed on another partition, but after the setup was complete all my programs were gone, though they still showed up on the D:Drive. Luckily I copied all of my C:Drive to an external drive (Copy and Paste) and so I thought of just copying it back to the new C:Drive, but that didn't work.
How do I get all my programs back? It's still on my D:Drive, but it isn't showing at all so in order for me to launch it, I have to manually go to Program Files (x86) or Program Files and fine the desired program which is a bit of a hassle.
Help?

Answer:Problem with lost programs - Not showing even though I installed it on another partition

Not entirely sure what you've done.
It rather sounds like you had Windows 7 installed on C, with the programs on D and you then did a clean install of Win8 on C.
That being the case, then you won't be able to use the programs installed previously (under Win7) on D. Some may work (after a fashion), but you cannot rely on it at all.
When you install programs all sorts of information relating to the programs is effectively stored with the OS. Having done a clean install of Win8 will mean that your OS does not know of the programs on D.
If you can restore your original Win7 set-up, I'd recommend doing an UPGRADE to Win8, not a clean install. Alternatively re-install all of the programs again (if you have the installers etc.).

Hi,
My Windows XP Partition i.e "E" is 8.02GB in size.
As per the My Computer menu the E partition has only 1.21GB Free Space.
So the used space must be 6.81GB.

However when i check all the files inside the partition (including hidden files) occupy only 5.17GB.

Why is it so?
Its an old PC on Pentium 4 processor and 512MB RAM.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 OS.
I am adding some screenshots.

Please enlighten me.
Thanks a lot.

I tried to connect an external drive that wasn't showing up so I went into Disk Management and tried to enable it. I was not able to get the drive to work on this laptop but now when I look in Disk Management, it's showing a volume for a 12GB hard drive that is not connected. In addition, to the right of Disk 0, it shows 3 partitions now. The first is the 12GB  "Recovery Partition", then the 102MB "System Reserve" which is normal and then the C drive which looks normal. There is no 12GB HD connected to this laptop. When I right click either on the volume on top or the "partition" below, it doesn't give any options besides "Help", which is pretty useless. Here is a screen shot:Any idea how to delete this volume/partition?I tried system restore, by the way. It didn't remove it.

Answer:Disk management showing volume/partition that does not exist.

You say you believe the 12GB partition/drive should not appear in Disk Management, yet it's clearly labeled Recovery Partition.  So, the 12GB partition is the Recovery Partition put there by Acer and it's there in case you need to restore your system to it's original configuration.  This, i.e., a Recovery Partition,  is standard on practically all computers on the market in recent years.  And, if you use the Recovery Partition to restore the system, the Recovery Partition will continue to exist after you've done a restore. So, based on your post, I really don't see a problem.  Can you re-state or clarify what you feel is the problem?

I have a friend that is running a Dell Inspiron with 4 gigs of RAM.  There is a recovery partition built into the computer and has for the longest time had balloon pop ups saying that the partition is full.  The graphic in my computer does show that it is completely full.

Is there any way to reduce the size of this restoration partition?  I would sure appreciate any and all ideas someone might have on this.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Recovery Partition is full and showing messages to reduce size.

Hi

Move any personal data you (actually your friend) stored in the recovery partition to another partition or external media. Don't delete anything other.Recovery partition is so important. If it get corrupted you won't be able to restore the OS. Since it is a Dell system, look for a program named "Dell Data sfae local backup". Open that and you will see an option to burn recovery media. Burn the DVD set and keep it air sealed.

*Insert token disclaimer about not knowing if this is the correct forum for this* It looks like it so I'll go with it.

I've got a problem that popped up the other night when I decided I wanted to restore my system to a previous time due to a BSOD I received and had a feeling it was due to CCleaner.

Regardless, I'm now unable to see my E: drive, as shown in the screenshot, on the left side of Explorer under Computer. It shows up fine in the main window there but not on the side. I can't even rename it, I had it named previously.

Any ideas?

Hi guys, I want to connect my ps3 hard drive on pc to use it on pc, so when I get my new computer I can use it with it straight away, but right now I want to use it on my current pc, I plugged in both the one cable and the other one (sata), that goes from power supply cable to the HDD.

when I booted the pc it said installing device drive software, and said, device is ready to use, I go to my computer, and it ain't there, do I have to set it as secondary in bios?

Win7 Ultimate final rev

It's automatically set as fourth IDE master. restarted pc and still doesn't show up, I heard I need to format, is that true? like that to know if I should re-gain windows 7 disk

Oh and t's actually 320gb

Answer:250gb hdd ps3 on pc?

Open up Disk Management (in the admin tools control panel), it should show up in there. I'd delete all the partitions and create 1 new one that incorporates the whole disk. Then format as NTFS.
