Opinions on Processor type/speed

Question: Opinions on Processor type/speed

Looking for opinions (pros and cons) of the two processors types and speeds.

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB)

Pentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB)

Does the Dual Core provide any significant advantage even though running slower than the Hyper Threading processor. Will the Dual Core be better at multi tasking since it is a dual processor core.

In performance tests, which would yield better results.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Opinions on Processor type/speed

Some comparison performance tests of CPUs including the two you have earmarked above Chas http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

My take on it, yes the Dual Core CPUs do have a distinct edge over their single core parents, and in the tests above at Toms do occupy the top slots in the multitasking tests, personally I dont see any Cons to a dual cpu, plus more software will be written to take advantage of the 2xcores.

My pref would be the 820.

I was planning to buy a used Dell latitude laptop. How do I check processor type and speed, RAM harddrive capacity of the machine?

Thanks,

Answer:checking processor type and speed

premsoman
Most of that info should be available on the screen at boot. If it goes by too fast to read, hit the pause/break key and it will stop untill you hit escape. If a splash screen is in your way try hitting escape then pause/break. Another option, get the exact model number and go to Dell's website to see what the system specs are supposed to be.

hi

processors have speeds like 2.7GHz and this actually a frequency at which it runs ..

frequency is cycles per second .... 2.7GHz = 2.7*1024*1024*1024 = 2,899,102,924.8 Hz i.e cycles per second or pulses per second .

i think 2,899,102,924.8 bits per second such processor is said to process .

on the other hand we have system type like 64-bit ... does that mean processor only processes 64 bits per second ? and how we differentiate both of these factors and distinguish clearly ?

Answer:system type and processor speed

It would be more accurate to think of it as the way the chip handles data and floating-point registers.

I sadly do not actually know the math. It does increase the rate at which data is processed.
It has more to do with the registers though. I'm not sure how it would fit into your equation exactly.

I didnt particulary like the computer packages that I have seen while shopping for a good computer so I have decided to try and build this one. I have never built one before. I have choosen the ATX Asus A8N-SLI Premium socket 939 for the mother board. I would like some opinions in the $100 to $150 range, what would be a good processor to run with this system. I am really into video with live feed cams as well as running my own cam and also multi tasking. I dont run very many games and I will be running either xp home or pro, havent decided that yet. Thanks for any processor opinions.

Hi there,

I'm looking to upgrade in the next couple of weeks and would like to hear opinions on the following combination:

Asus A8V-E DELUXE & AMD Athlon 64 3000+

Also, would it be possible to keep my current graphics and sound cards to use with this combination? I don't have much money, but I want something that can grow as I go along.

Thanks so much for your help.

Answer:Opinions on mobo and processor?

I would like to state that all your hardware will carry over into the new system. There's only three exceptions (Memory and graphics, and power).

Your currently running sdram and your new system will use ddr ram. As for the video card this motherboard isnt backward compatible and only runs the new pci express video cards. So if you really want this motherboard you will need to buy a pci express video card.

I would go with the next model down the A8V deluxe. This will support your tnt 2 card but, you still need to purchase some ddr ram for any board you select. Since sdram is old, outdated, and isnt compatible with today's motherboards.

What can you tell me about the power supply?
Maker, maximum Watts?

When upgrading, It's a good rule of thumb to buy a new power supply depending on the age of the psu. If its a few years old its time for a new one. Plus with the new setup your power requirements are going to increase and your current psu may not be able to handle it. With that in mind, I recommend at a minimum a 400 watt power supply.

Do you have a case that's compatible with the amd64? This is a far cry from 650mhz processor. This setup is going to run alot hotter. Your current case many not be able to cool it properly and cause overheating problems.

I hope this helps.
Good Luck

Hey guys. I'm throwing a computer together for myself in the relatively near future. Here's what I want out of the system. Basically, I'm going to be playing Age of Empires III on it when it comes out this holiday season. I'm kinda wondering what advantages I'll notice if I get and AMD Athlon 64 3200 versus the AMD Athlon XP 3200. Will I notice a difference?

You see, I was under the impression that computers with 3200 as model numbers would operate at almost the same speeds. The price difference between these two mobo/processor combos are substantial. I can get the XP 3200 for $142 and the 64 3200 for $243. I'm not looking to spend a fortune. I want a computer that won't be obsolete in a year either.

Other components are under control. I was just wondering if it's really necessary to have 64 bit, or it will be necessary to have it in the next 3-4 years. I don't think they'll be phased out, and in 3-4 years I don't expect to have a top-of-the-line PC either. As long as it still works.

Ryan

Answer:Personal Processor Opinions?

Yeah the AMD 64 will be better (not much for AOEIII)

However in the future when more x64 bit software comes out you'll notice a bigger and better difference.

Go for the 64 bit one ..... get the Vencie core!

I need to replace another computers' CRT monitor so I have decided on connecting my current L1975NW Westinghouse to it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824255005
This monitors has been running like a beast for years upon end and would gladly get another if it were available NEW.
So this has put me in the market for a new monitor.
However I must say a few things first:
1. My space is extremely limited so anything above 23-24 is not going to fit.

2. Budget is $100-150 NO GREATER

3. The connection will be DVI.

4. Speakers are not required for said monitor.

5. Listed two monitors below. Are they the same screen type as the L1975NW (gloss/matte & TN) right?

6. I have heard debates on TN/IPS/PLS Panels but I currently don't see these issues. Is this in relation to the Hz that the screen is being run at?

7:
IF NOT and it is view angle alone (usually don't go beyond the 35* to 45* angle). Does panel type matter?
IF SO and I plan to run at 60Hz till infinity comes does panels really matter at all?

8. Must be able to handle load 24/7/365 Efficiently. I mean NEVER EVER be turned off and be saving with the power. Less draw in sleep mode as well would be nice. Can these run that way?

I have been looking at one of these two:

I'm about to take the plunge into a laptop and am trying to weigh my options.

Let me start off by explaining that I"m looking to spend $300 to $400 tops, before taxes and what-not.

My needs are simply to surf the net, email and watch dvds while away from the home unit.

What are the best choices regarding laptop brand and processor type?

I've read that Athlons normally generate more heat with a laptop, but generally outperform Celerons.

Suggestions?

Answer:Buying a new budget laptop. Opinions on processor.

Avoid Celeron and Sempron processors. These are the '3 legged dogs' from Intel and AMD respectively. Centrino and Turion processors (again Intel/AMD respectively) were engineered for laptop use and either would be a good choice for performance and battery longevity. Laptops which use standard desktop processors are likely to run hotter and shorten the time between battery charges, but performance will be increased.

I'm not on Facebook so feedback on there would be impossible

But for the most part Harrie if you make No attempt to show what you've designed as far as a editing pack.....
How on earth would you expect anyone to download and use it,

Make something original that is of course what the Custom wallpapers thread is all about,

Hi all,
I want to connect my VCR to the computer to transfer old home movies to DVD.
The Analog to DV device requires a 1 GHz processor. Mine is 498 MHz.

Regarding the speed, will the device work only slowly or not at all?

Thanks!

Answer:Solved: Video capture device speed vs. processor speed

It is not a matter of slow or not at all. It is most likely a matter of dropped frames. If you have a cheaper video capture card [one without hardware decoding] it will probably work however you will not like the result.

Video editing / encoding is cpu intensive. I would hate to think how long it would take to encode the video file after you capture it [with that cpu]

To give you some idea, it takes me about 15 min to encode approx 1hr of video with an intel dual core cpu. With yours it will be hours.

I need to order a new desktop for my office to replace a 3 year old machine that runs at 3.2 Ghz. The new machines that Dell offers only has this option:

Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6700 (8MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB)

I don't think there is a standard measuring stick that is used to compare all the processor speeds that I can find or understand. I work with CAD programs that use up a lot of resources and I typically get the fastest available and max the RAM. With all the latest software that I have to install, I need the new machines to run faster than the ones they replace.

Can anyone tell me how this 2.66GHz processor compares to my current machine? I don't have the exact specs for it, this is what it lists on the dell support site for my system - PROCESSOR, 80532K, 3.2GHZ, 1M, 533, M0.

This morning I have been comparing transfer rates between two of my hard drives because I presently have a SATA/500g and a IDE/150g. I have tons of files that I want to put on the 500(for safe keeping). Right now I use the 500 for win7 and two other hdd's for storage only. I want to change my system and use the 150/ide for the os&apps, and the 500 sata for just storage. I did a comparison this morning and transfered a 6gig file at the same time to each of those drives and it came up as showing(on average) 2-3 seconds slower on the ide. I also did another comp seperately on the drives and the ide was showing 3-4 seconds(on average) slower than the sata. 95% of the time we(the family) are just webbing, youtube, etc. A few times i'm doing video editing, capturing screen video, uploading to youtube. So given those numbers and what we do on the puter, would I be making a dumb move by using my ide over the sata for my os and the sata for just storage?

Many Thanks:
Don

Answer:Need Opinions On HDD's Transfer Speed...

Don,
It's all about time and if you have it and don't mind the extra wait then no biggie as they say. Most here are placing our OS and critical software on a SSD for it's absolute speed. If you leave your system on for extended periods and don't mind waiting for the OS or software to load then it could be an OK plan. I would suggest with as inexpensive as SSD's have gotten to look into this as once you experience the speed of this drive you'll never understand how you managed without it.

I am going to be buying a new computer in the near future and was wondering if backups, file copying, and defragging will speed up very much?

It seems like that at some point, the drives would not be able to keep up with the processor and faster processors would not be needed for many or even most applications.

I am using a 1 ghz Pentium 3 computer now and am going to get a new 3 ghz computer next.

Also, recently, I read an article about the new dual core Intel chips and that sounds like something that I would like but do not know if they are out yet, and if so, do not know what they are called.

Answer:Processor speed vs hard drive speed

The main point of having a faster processor is that it runs games smoother, compresses audio and video faster, and so on. These tasks are not particularly dependent on hard disk performance. Nearly all applications will benefit from a faster processor regardless of the speed of the hard disk.

My email has a barebones special from Tiger Direct that features this mobo. (Mach Speed Viper MK8-939A). It sounds nice but I have a couple of questions. I'm not familiar with Mach Speed products. It has an MGP port that according to the Mach Speed website supports AGP cards. Is it indeed a "normal" AGP slot? Would my ATI 850 work there? Is the PCI Express slot usable with an AGP card? What I mean is can you use both together at the same time? I have not been looking but I also have not noticed mobo's that have both AGP and PCI Express slots? Are they available from other manufacturers? Would this be worth the price of $299 after rebates? Sounds like a good deal.

Mach Speed has a poor reputation, early on their website was non-existent and support is apparently very bad. The products themselves are compareable to ECS.

My query is as follows... I am looking to speed up my system, and my plan is to add some more RAM. But at what point is it pointless to add more ram because the other things are limiting the system rather than the lack of Ram? My current spec is as follows... Microstar 6167 motherboard with Athlon 600 cpu. 192 Mb PC133 SD ram (and one slot free) 10gb HD, of which 5.75gb still free. Nvida Riva TNT2 32mb graphics card Soundblaster live 1028 56k internal modem. Running win 98 se System mostly used with Ms office 2000, IE6, outlook express, realjukebox. If I put another 512mb ram in it, will the system run faster as a whole? Or will I not notice a difference? Would I see more benefit from upgrading other parts of the system, like processor or adding a second HD? Answers on a postcard please...

Answer:Ram speed limited by processor speed?

Adding an extra 512 would not be worth it. Add another 256RAM, that should more than suffice with win 98se. I ran win ME on 256 and upped to 384 Ram, with a Duron 700. The difference was slight.

Answer:Buying a laptop - how important is Processor Type?

What are you going to use the laptop for?If you want to play games you need a bit of power (and will pay for it), if you only want to use it for `work` and some online gathering of data plus e-mails then a celeron processor will do.Make certain you don`t change your mind and want more power later - it can be expensive. In general terms, for project work I would suggest a larger hard drive is more important.

Hi malick4132,
Dell has tested Inspiron 580 with the following processors without any issues:

Intel Pentium G6950
Intel Core i3 - 530, 540
Intel Core i5 - 750, 650

Your computer is shipped with Mobile Intel H57 Express Chipset. For more information on this, you may refer to link: http://intel.ly/XJYkuG
Click on the compatible products to get the list of processors compatible with your computer. Most of them support LGA1156 socket or FCLGA1156 socket. Both are almost similar. Please ensure to update system BIOS before you upgrade the processor on computer.

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go  ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.
Please reply for further clarifications.

which would indicate that the N500 manual is the best approximation available. The support site changed a while back, so the manual link in that thread no longer works. Please try this, instead: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/45n3577_01.pdf
Starting on page 98, you'll see the listing of CPU options that were available/configurable at the time.

Apologies, but this is the best I can find.
Regards.

Hi all.
I got this Satellite A200-1S5 laptop and it works wonderful, I have got no problems. I just have a question. while I was searching stuff about it, like impressions and reviews, I ran into a forum and someone with the same notebook observed something strange. even if it has a t5250 c2d at 1.5Ghz, if you check into device manager the second core shows as a t7300 at 2Ghz.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/9707/35186630am0.jpg

I'm just curious because nobody knows anything about it. what's with the second core? What's the "catch"? [If there is any] :)

Cheers!

Answer:Re: Satellite A200-1S5 - processor type info needed

It looks like this is a common Vista issue.
At first time my CPUs on the A100 notebook were recognized as two different CPUs with different speeds.
You have to remove the CPU from device manager and have to reboot the notebook.

After new reboot and new CPU installation the device manager will show the right speed ;)

If it does not work come back and give some feedback...

Hello,I am thinking of buying the T460s with a base configuration and then upgrading the SSD myself.Question - If I choose to buy the 128GB SATA SSD, does this mean that the SSD slot can only have SATA M.2 SSD in it?Similarly, If I choose the 256GB PCI-NVMe, then the SSD slot can hold only NVMe M.2 SSDs in it? Is there even such a thing as a universal M.2 slot, that can take SATA OR NVMe SSD? Thank you very much.-D

Answer:T460s SSD Type and Bus Speed

Per https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t4... , I think taking the SATA route with an aftermarket PCIe NVMe should be fine, but I too would like confirmation from an authority here. That said, if Lenovo?s markup for storage wasn?t so obscene, this would be less of a concern.

this happens to me a lot, and it's pretty annoying; after my computer is on for a while, i notice that when i hold down a key when im typing, it slows the action down. for example, if i want to delete a sentence, usually i hold down the backspace key and the cursor zips across the screen deleting everything real quick. but the longer my computer is on, it gets slower and it takes like a second per word. same if im typing; if i hold down a key, it will get maybe 4 characters down in a second when it should knock out 10 in that time.

this isn't affecting the speed letters are typed as i hit the keys, only when i hold down the button. so is there something i hit on my keyboard unknowingly that bogs down the rate letters are typed, or is it something else?

My processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ that is supposed to run at 1.8 GHz. I looked at my system properties and it said that my CPU speed was 1.09 GHz. Why is this? Is my processor not running as fast as it should be? I play PC games, and the game I play most often requires a processor that is at least 1.7 GHz. Is this why the game is so choppy? How do I fix this?

Answer:My processor speed: 1.09 or 1.8 GHz?

This is the one billionth time this post has been made  When this processor is first fired up it is typically defaulted to safe (read slow) settings. This is done by design to assure a first-time startup.Download and run CPU-Z and tell us what processor core you have and someone will help you set it to design speed. It's probably a Barton, but I want you to verify that.

Hello!

(if this is posted in the wrong place, please forgive me.)

I am not sure what happened. I don't know if it's a virus or not.
It was running fine but now everything is slower.
I watch a movie almost every but now cannot because image and sound are jerky.
And every click of the mouse, especially internet browsing, seems to take seconds when before it was instant.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium.
I ran Malwarebytes and have tried shutting down and restarting computer many times but it's still slow.

If you can help solve this I would be so very grateful!

Thanks!

Answer:Processor Speed is Way Down

At first glance you have a hdd with a total capacity of 112 GB with 1.025 GB of free space.

You have less than ten percent of free space, you need more free space for swap space. This will most certainly slow your computer.

I would suggest defragmenting your hdd and do the disk cleanup.

I would also suggest either deleting files and programs which you don't need, or add an external hdd to transfer your data to.

Hi ComputerHope community,I was just wondering out of interest, what would a Celeron M 1.46GHz be equal to if it were in the form of a Pentium 4 chip ?Also after that little mind boggling question, which would be better a Celeron M or a Pentium 4Many thanks in advance,Sean.

Answer:Processor speed

A Celeron M 1.46GHz is roughly equivalent to a Pentium 4 at 2.4GHz.  Each may outperform the other at different tasks.  The Celeron M will produce far less heat and will also use less power. As for what's "better" - better for what?

Question: Processor speed

Can anybody advise on the speed of a 2.4 XP Athlon processor. Bios says it is running at 2.0ghz. Is this correct or could it be faster.

Answer:Processor speed

This particular processor runs at an actual clock speed of 1.995GHz as opposed to the 2.4GHz you might expect. The multiplier for this chip is 15, which multiplied by the system clock frequency of 133MHz gives you the expected result of 1995MHz or 1.995GHz. If you didn?t already know, AMD began naming their processors to match the speed of the Pentium 4 chip that it most closely competes with. So in this case, you can assume that the AMD processor running at 1.995GHz performs as well as an Intel Pentium 4 running at 2.4GHz.

Well they no longer support my dinasour 845G series chipset nor will they advise me on what to upgrade to. Answer:amd processor speed

Check your fsb setting. It probably defaults to 100. You need to set the fsb to 133 it will then read correctly. Check the manual; it will have instructions on how to set bus speed.
If this is a computer you purchased, why not take it back to where you bought it from and have them correct the problem. After all if you pay for something, you have a right to expect that it will work as advertised.

Judging from PassMark.com benchmark scores.

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ > benchmarks between 400 & 500
Intel Core2 Duo 1.6GHz > benchmarks between 800 & 1100

To answer your question, I don't see any reason why the laptop would be slower. The laptop has two times the CPU performance and three times the memory.

Question: Processor speed

Hi all.
My nephews comp has been playing up.
Randomly shutting down etc.
I suspected the mobo and after swapping stuff and having no luck I tried his processor in my mobo.
It is up and running fine so it looks like it is the mobo.
Thing is, when I run dxdiag it shows the processor as a Athlon xp 1600+ running at 1.4mhz. I thought it was a xp 2400+
Could it be that I need to change the jumpers on my mobo?
I thought that doing this would only change the speed not the name.
Ie, I have a xp 3000+ running at 2100mhz. If I change the clock speed it will still show as a 3000+ but the mhz will change.
Hope someone understands my waffle
Cheers.

Answer:Processor speed

Welcome to the forum! Your CPU has SpeedStep technology, enabling it to run at different speeds depending on power settings and actual needs of the machine. It is quite likely that you're not running any tasks that would require the CPU to run at full speed.  If you want to monitor this and adjust it even more than you already have, and are running XP, Google for a utility called "Speedswitch XP" and download it, it works very well on most machines that I've tested it on. Hope this helps.

Answer:Processor Speed Help

Sweetthang57,

First of all, welcome to our forums.

In case you're new to forums in general, when a member posts a topic, we like to keep it on the same track until the problem is solved. This avoids confusion and avoids having to carry on multiple conversations at once. Especially in cases like this (although your problems may be similar) trying to solve 2 separate PC problems can lead to confusion & inefficiencies.

If you don't mind, please post your own separate thread on this where you will get more responses. Thx.

Question: Processor speed???

Hi All,
I have 2 different laptops that I am using... one of them is an Acer with an AMD Sempron 3100 processor, the other is an e-machines with an AMD Turion processor. Other than the processors, the rest of the stuff is pretty much the same. The Turion is technically supposed to be the better "(faster)" of the two processors.

My question is this...

Whenever I visit any web pages, the sempron processor seems to load the pages faster. It doesn't matter if it is a newly visited site, or if I already have cookies from the site, or if I wipe the cookies clean. When I set the two computers side by side and hit the enter button or the mouse button or the go arrow at the same time, the "faster" processor doesn't get up and go ... there is a pause before it starts it's work and then a pause before it finishes loading the page. Many often times, in the lower left hand corner, it says 1 item remaining and doesn't "finish" loading the page for quite a while.

I know that the processor speed tests are within miliseconds of each other and they're taken from robots who hit the enter key at EXACTLY the same time, and I'm not one of those, but I'm not talking about miliseconds...I'm talking about at least 10 seconds or more per web page... a significant stall.

any explanation anyone could offer for the "technically faster" processor being slower than the "inferior" processor would be greatly appreci... Read more

Your FSB is likely set incorrectly. It is likey set at 100, instead of 166Mhz. You should find this setting in the CMOS setting or on the motherboard via jumper settings.

Gigabyte K7 GA-7ZXE motherboard, AMD Athlon 2000+ processor. Jumper set to 133. On start up, indication is that proc only running at 16+. Anything I can do to get it up to spec?

Answer:AMD processor speed

16+? Do you mean 1600? If so, that is probably about right for a 2000 AMD processor.

Question: PROCESSOR speed

In taskbar I have CPU useage meter.  When puter is busy it uses almost 100% of capacity.  But on my sis's puter CPU meter rarely goes past 25-30%?  It's like it has a governor to inhibit speed.  Anybody know why this could be happening?AMD Sempron 3100+  1.80 ghz  1600Mhz FSB   windows XP home

Answer:PROCESSOR speed

Are the specs above those of the PC that never goes past 30%?What are the specs of your PC?And what is either one doing when the CPU is at its highest?Maybe you're just not taxing it.

I am looking to buy a new PC - main usage will be working on graphics and editing video - high end gaming not requiredDo I need the latest CPU speeds of AMD 27/2800 combined with 512 MB Ram or is it better to have more RAM and a sloer CPU - what about graphics card ? Is a GForce TI 4800 necessary? Thanks for a few comments.

Answer:need help on processor speed

The fastest processor you can and 1Gig of ram then a big hard drive or preferablly two.... the graphics card is down to you, but a Ti 4200 at least....But then I just hate waiting for Photoshop etc to process the images.

So I recently upgraded to the latest BIOS and Intel Chipset drivers on the Lenovo 40 70 support page.  Now, my CPU speed tends to run near maximum all the time (between 2.5 ghz - 3 ghz).  In the past, it would hang out around 1 ghz until I started ramping up applications (and then increase in speed as necessary). As a result, I now get a lot of heat on the wrist rest, and the fan goes almost constantly. Any ideas?

Answer:Y40 Processor Speed

Viruses?? Check on the task manager which applications are consuming more CPU. I have Y50 Under low load, like browsing and making usual thinks with low cpu impact its running on low speed from bottom 0.82GHz to 1.5GHz

Hi all.I am testing my nephews amd processor in my mobo as I think his is giving up.His processor is running fine on my mobo so it looks like I have isolated the problem.Thing is, when I run dxdiag it shows the processor as a athlon 1600+ running at 1400mhz.He thought it was a 2400+.If I change the clock speed jumpers to up the mhz speed will it still show as a 1600+?ie, if it shows AMD xp 1600+ in dxdiag, is that what the processor is and thats that?Cheers

Answer:Processor speed

Run everest home click hereThis should give you the model number ( full speed ) of the cpu and the speed it is now running at.
