Comp. died, need new hardware

Question: Comp. died, need new hardware

Ok, my computer died, the motherboard ( Gateway). Its sad that it happened, but now i can finally get away from stock computer since now i have a reason to replace some stuff. I need a new case, motherboard, and PSU. So which ones do you recommend? If its at Newegg...all the better, but send me any. Well the mobo should be under $120. and the PSU should be about 300W. For a case...around $50 would be nice.

Preferred Solution: Comp. died, need new hardware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Comp. died, need new hardware

You can get a decent system for around $350.00 without the monitor and printer, but for the price you can get everything together for under $400.00 if needing something immediate.

Looking at TigerDirect, You can get a Barebones for around $250.00 with at least a 2.xghz processor. The big question is what are you going to be using it for (gaming, Internet browsing).

Question: uh-oh my comp died

I was sitting watching TV and looked over to the computer screen and saw an error that said it shut down to prevent further damage(of course I didn't write the error down, lol, like I always tell other people to do). It said to restart the computer if I had never saw the message before, and if I had, to run diagnostics, consult administrater, bla, bla. I restarted and that was it,nothing on the monitor(still in standby mode),power light on,both optical drives worked(opened and closed them and the lights worked), hard drive light turns orange for about 30-60 seconds then goes off,Usb hub power light goes OUT when I power the machine up,and when I opened the case it smelled like something was not right around the drives. No smoke or anything, just a peculair smell, but possibly something burnt.

Looks like I may get some repair experience now! Thats good, but It had been a little while since I backed up.(I've got to start following my own advice, lol)

Where do I start?

Hi guys/girls
My computer, an Alienware Area 51 7500-R3, had just started making whining noises (kind of sounded like a weedeater, and today while playing WoW it froze up and I rebooted it. Unlike other times this has happened it hit the load screen and froze up and restarted itself, over and over. It would not start in safe mode, so I thought it was a software issue like it has had before. While trying to reinstall windows it froze up and went into hibernation and would not respond to me moving the mouse. So I restarted again and it did the same thing, so I walked away from it. As I was walking back into my room, the screen was a mess of fuzzy blocks and in the end it still froze up. I unplugged everything and opened up the case and blew it out with an air can, plugged the moniter and power cable back in and it seemed to be working fine, it was reinstalling windows and whatnot. So after it reinstalled, it restarted and again it had the fuzzy/scambled blocks on the screen.

The only game I play is WoW. Sometimes the terrain won't load, I get low FPS or it freezes up all together and I have to restart the game or my computer. And recently it has gotten alot worse. I was talking to some friends and they say its the motherboard. A few months after I got my alienware, the motherboard went out and had to send it in for replacement. I'm thinking it may be my video card (EVGA Nvidea Geforce 7950 GT 512 MB PCIE) but then I think no because my comp is restarting itself and I get a... Read more

Answer:Comp has died again

Is the "whining noise" coming from the fan(s), or is it coming from the hard drive? If it's coming from the hard drive, it's very bad. (If not, ignore this whole post). You may have a head crash, and if you keep trying to power it up, the drive will end up like this (scroll to the bottom to see how the heads scraped the magnetic coating off the platter - needless to say the data is gone). If you have important data to recover I'd send it to a data recovery company. If not, and all you need is to run are Windows and WoW, just contact warranty services from your hard disk manufacturer to have the drive replaced (if it's still under warranty).

This is a worst-case scenario post (because I can't tell where the "whining noise" comes from). Hopefully this is not what happened.

Ok, I'm new to this forum so bare with me. It happened last night as I turned on my comp, it's been 3 weeks since I turned it on because I was away. Anyway, everything is fine... I check email, chat on aim blah blah.. then I plug my usb cable from my mp3 player into the back. Then all of a sudden... just as I plug the usb in, the comp shuts off! I tried to turn it back on it won't work.. I tried everything spent the whole night trying to solve the problem but no go. How could this be? Talk about aggravation, at first I thought it was the power supply so I went out a bought a new one, when I put in the new power supply still won't work.. so I'm like OK... this is freaking crazy. Maybe it's the motherboard... I spent another 75$ and bought a cheap asus motherboard and rebuilt everything... Using the new mother board and the new power supply, the cd rom gets power and so does my 2 HD's but the cpu fan does not... nor does my video card. Also the new motherboard has no built in video jack.. so I have to use my video card - will this cause problems?Does anyone have a clue of what's wrong, I'm pretty new to this stuff so any help would be appreciated! What steps should I take to diagnose this problem.. and fix it? $175 dollars later I have nothing but parts.... any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.*One side note, when I plugged in the new power supply and turned it on for the first time I smelled some plastic burning.. it's a 430 watt supply maybe it's too much?

Answer:Comp died out of NO where! Help.

did the new motherboard come with a floppy disk and did you load it?...have you checked all the wiring?you have not mention ram sticks..did you put them back in?i dont like this plastic smell? is you psu correctly adjusted for the voltage?what is your cpu?  ...does it have the paste on it? some do some the new motherboard any good?this may help you>

I just bought 1 gig of ram, and stupidly put in my old ram and new ram in least I think I did for both for both of them. I started the computer, and I heard a snap and smelled some smoke so I immediately turned it off. I learned I put it in backwards, and now I'm wondering what the damage is. When I put in my old (512 DDR) ram the computer makes beeps as if it wasn't in there...for both slots. When I put my 1 gig in the computer doesn't make any noises for both slots. Regardless, I get no image from my desktop, and my joystick, mouse, keyboard etc. Are not working. I tested my video card (7800 GS OC) because the fan was working and no display was showing, I took it out and put in my old one (9600 XT) After turning the comp on, the fan worked for about 20 seconds then stopped. I'm wondering what else could be damaged? Could it be the ram, mobo? Could there be other things damaged like my video card? My video card slot? please help and give any advice you can. Thanks.

Answer:Help! Comp died on me

That's not possible without physically forcing the RAM into the slot. You would have to rip off some of the pins to get it to fit that way, it's made fool-proof (or so they thought).

But, you're probably looking at a fried motherboard, possibly a fried CPU, and maybe some of the devices connected (HDD, sound card, video card...who knows).

I came back from Christmas vacation last night and tried to check my email....

Unfortunately my computer won't boot and I'm at a loss at what to do next. I've had the computer since Jan 2003. I've had some problems lately bluescreening infrequently...but nothing this serious before.

It doesn't pass the POST test (Beep), all that happens is the fans go on, the power light is on, and any drive lights are on, (no flashing). The monitor is connected but powers down (because no signal is sent).
I've disconnected any pci cards
I've removed power from the optical drives
I've removed power from the hard drive

I believe that leaves either faulty Ram, bad CPU or bad motherboard. Please help if you know of any way I can find out what the problem is. Could the CMOS battery be involved?

Here's my specs:
MSI Motherboard (VIA Chipset)
AMD Athlon XP 1700
512 MB Ram

im sorry for typing this much, but i really wanna fix my comp...

Ok, I usually google every problem I have, and i usually find the answer to everything, but now im stuck completely.. My comp worked well, never used anti virus, barely got any viruses at all. Then suddenly my comp started slowing down fast, got worse by the hour. Windows Xp almost completely died, cpu usage was 100% always, I turned off all useless processes but still dindt help, installed anti viruses, defragmented, cleaned, nothing helped, so I formatted everything and installed vista. After that I saw that my video card ati 2600Xt and the current motherboard I have dont go together with vista, they make a mess, make cpu usage also 100%, so i decided to go back to XP, and since I couldnt find my XP disk, I borrowed my uncles... So I installed the xp fine, everything went well, had trouble installing sound drivers though.. but in the end it was all good, but after like 2 days, comp slowed down, couldnt do anything on it, after i restarted, got some error at startup, some system file was missing... I have a 250gb Hardrive, divided into 2 partitions. 1 for windows, 2nd for storage. I really want to save the 100gb of storage i have, and bought an external hd for that. So, after i got that error on start up, i tried going in with safe mode, didnt work. When safe mode was loading, said some system files was missing or corrupt, i think it was windows/system32/config/system.sys or something.. anyways, i googled... Read more

Answer:NEED HELP, comp died, cant reinstall windows...

Sounds like the HD is going bad. You could do a couple of things.

Take the HD out of the PC and put in a different PC as a slave drive and then copy over your data using your USB external for storage.

You could download and create a bootable CD of Diagnostic software from the HD manufacturer's website usually Maxtor/Seagate or Western Digital. Do the Long test and see if it can fix any errors. Then reformat the partition and try the Windows install again.

Go ahead and get a new HD (yours will be going permanently bad very soon ) install Windows and then attach the old one as slave and move the data over.

If you want to try recovering the data using a command prompt the Recovery Console won't let you access anything but specific Windows folders so it will do you no good. You will need a Linux live CD to get a more powerful command prompt or try this bootable one. You will need to burn the CD as an image using imgburn or similar software.

Then Plug in your USB external drive
Reboot computer using the CD.
Allow it to start from Cd, click yes anywhere it doesn't auto load.

OK, so i bot a heatsink off of ebay for my brothers computer ( this is an e-Machines t2460 with a GeForce 5200 Ultra and an SB! Live soundcard, as far as i know the computer has an FIC AM37 motherboard and a AMD 2400+ Athlon XP processor, and it has 768MBs of RAM) and when i put it on (after having a hard time clamping the heatsink down and moving around some capacitors and hit the motherboard with the screw driver a few times, checked to make sure there were no scratches or scuffs on the motherboard and found none), computer wouldnt send a signal to the monitor, and beeped for 3 seconds. replaced vid card, worked for about 10 minutes, died again. put back in old vid card, worked for another 10 minutes, died again. entered continuous reboot loop, and i decided to replace the vid card to the test card again. 3 second beeps, more swapping vid cards, then considered maybe it was cause the fan i put on the new heatesink didnt have the 3 pin connector, and the motherboard thot there was no heatsink/fan. plugged in the old fan and set it aside while new heatsink/fan did their job, booted up, worked for a few minutes, and died again. while old fan w/3 pin connector was connected, rebooted, 3 second beeps. figured maybe i unseated/messed up the seating of the processor during my struggle to clamp down the heatsink, so i took it off and reseated it, and still got 3 second beeps. unplugged old fan, figured maybe it was a memory problem, so i tested each stick individually, 3 second bee... Answer:Comp died replacing heatsink...

Good Evening viceless, what was the original reason you started playing with this machine?

Usually one slip with a screwdriver is fatal on many boards.

With AMD processors there is not much leeway if the thing overheats excessively, it sounds like it currently is operating so be extremely careful.
It is rather important to fit the correct heat sink and fan, some odd heatsinks may ride on the electrolytic capacitors which is fatal.

So going back to basics, is the fan and heatsink the correct one for that processor?

Did you follow proper antistatic commonsense when operating on this machine and only work inside the case with the power removed?

Did you use the correct procedure ensuring the proper heat transfer compound was used appropriately?

Remember you are playing with hundreds of millions of electronic components and it only takes one to be affected to kill everything.
There is no room for "whoops"!

In that it is going into boot cycles it is obvious a major problem exists, this could be processor overheat, memory problems, or some difference with the operating system on the drive and its system.
Was this operating system loaded in this machine with these components and board?

Try booting into safe-mode, tap F8 as the boot passes the BIOS screen.
If it will operate in Safe-mode is a start.

You need to apply absolute proper principles, otherwise it will get expensive.

i dont know whats wrong with it. would it be the motherboard??

my comp was originally dell, i changed almost everything in it, except the mobo

any suggestions

A mobo wouldnt kill a hard drive like that. That would be more towrd a PSU sending power spikes. What PSU are you running? It is very strange that 2 hard drives would be killed.

when I turned on my computer, it first made some weird ticking noise and didn't boot saying - Please install Gigabyte Xpress Recovery 2. A few hours earlier the power went out (the computer wasn't on), but when we reset the main power switch the power went on again.
I put the Gigabyte CD in, got the options "Backup" or "Reboot", but I apparently didn't have enough hdd space for the backup. After a reboot or 4 everything miraculously worked again.
Any idea what the hell happenned? I got pretty scared that my MoBo or hdd was dead.

The problem now - I tried if everything worked again, but when the game "Trackmania Nations Forever" loaded, I got a BSoD which says -
STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF17FBE2, 0xB2C07A7C, 0x00000000)
nv4_disp.dll - Address BF17FBE2 base at BF012000

I reboot, try Fifa09, works fine. I try WoW, works fine aswell, but ater 10 minutes I got the same BSoD. Is something broken?

(Not sure if this is in the right section, but it seemed hardware related to me. Solved because of title not being relevant)

my comp started to get a little unreliable, ie: random restarts, sometimes wouldnt load past boot post screen. but it usually gets there in the long run.

i went away for a week or so, come back to turn my computer on, and now everytime it gets upto the xp loading screen, it will either lock up, shut off, or display the blue screen of death. i tried reinstalling windows but that didnt seem to help at all.

the only other computer at my house is a new core2 duo, which i am not aloud to pull apart.. plus the components wont fit into mine anyway.. im using as follows (old i know!)

XP Athlon 2600+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
1g Corsair Value Ram
460w PSU
120g Seagate barracuda.

Can anyone suggest whats going wrong with it?

Answer:Comp died, wont get past xp load screen? plz help

Two main choices ...bad ram or a bad PSU ....remove everything except ram and the hard drive and see if it will boot. If not....try a diff. PSU.

Tried turning it back on and nothing. Took out the battery and tried turning it on with the power cord plugged in and nothing except a small sound coming from what seemed like the RAM or Processor. This only occurred with no battery and the power cord.

Is my motherboard shot? Is there anyway to easily identify the problem? Has this happened to anyone before?

Hi you all,

I really need some help. I was under the process of System Recovering my Hp Mini 110 when it died because I didnt realize it wasn't charging. Now the computer won't go past the Windows screen and I can't seem to do anything to get it to work anymore. I am so frustrated because I was doing the recovery because there was a virus on the computer and now it's in a even worse state than before.

I have tried the hitting of the F8 button that takes me to the black screen where I can do a few commands like Safe mode and Last Configuration and Starting the computer Normally but nothing is working

When I try to do the Repair Your Computer (the first option command choice) option it takes me to where I have to enter an Administrator password which I have no idea of what is it. Does any one anyone at all know what the Admin. password maybe or how I can bypass it to get the computer running again? Please?? I asked HP and they said I need to send it in for $250 to be repaired and I can't do that at this point

So please chime and help me. Any advice or tips would be so gratefully appreciated. Thank you everyone.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

If I simply swap out the MB's are boot off the Hard drive with WSE be able to adapt to the new hardware? Can I at least recover the CD Key because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Hey guys, trying to track down an issue on my gaming PC. I tapped the keyboard to take the computer out of sleep mode, and when it powered up the screen stayed in standby. I held the power switch down until it shut off, and upon releasing it powered back on instantly. I flipped the power off on the power supply, and let it sit for a minute or so before trying to turn it back on, and once pressing the power button, the fans start, proc fan, power supply fan, video card fan are all running, however I have seemingly no drive activity, or ANY video signal. No bios post, nothing.

I hate the idea of throwing money at something without some kind of educated assumption, or diagnostics. One of our family PC's did something similar recently that ended up being a crap power supply, but again.... I have no reason to assume that's all it is.

All of my system specs are up to date on my profile and the basics are below:

CPU: AMD FX 8120 -8 Core Black Edition
MB: AsRock 970DE3/U3S3 ATX
Ram: 8GB Crucial 1600
Video: Gigabyte Nvidia 650TI
PSU: 600Watt OCZ Stealth xStream

Answer:Screen Stays in Standby: Hardware died?

Hi metal monkey..

It would seem like your problem could be a bad and/or loose connecter/cable or it could be your motherboard or video card. Another possibility is ram.

First check all connections and ensure they are tight and secure. Remove any extra HD's you have connected other than the one you need to boot from.

What I would do is remove all ram besides one stick, place it in position one and see if it boots. If not, try another stick, etc etc. (If you have a stick of ram you know works, try it as well)

Try reseating your video card. If that doesn't work, use onboard video card (if you have one, i semi looked it up and maybe you don't have onboard video card?)

If none of those work, try to find a known good powersupply, although I doubt this is your problem unless its simply not getting enough power. If it powers most of the mobo, its usually fine.

If all this fails, try a known good Video card. If that doesn't work, I'd say you need a new mobo.

I have used Ghost to clone a computer hard drive. It works when reinstalled in the source computer. I need to install it in different hardware. With different drivers etc. it will not boot up. I have tried installing 4.0 on top of the cloned installation but it still will not boot. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Cloning a Win NT 4.0 comp. to one with differant hardware

Remove the partition on the new PC, then start an install of NT to create the partition. Once the partition is created NTFS (up to 8gig if using unattended install), then you can ghost down a partition image of the old PC to the new partition. If you made the ghost image a disk image, then it will have problems with the new hardware. We do this all the time with various models of Compaqs (each model is very different if you know Compaq).

For example, do I take out the processor and all other components except the mobo and turn it on to see if its stable? Then add in processor and do it again? Also, don't I have to keep my vid card plugged in? Without it I can't have my monitor plugged in and see if it BSOD's or not?

Since I have had so many problems since Dec and reinstalling windowswith DELL Tech Support(paid) and still unable to use assets of the comp- anyhow.I have a DELL Dimension 3000 WinXP SP2-(maybe3 as in an update)P4 2.8 Ghz 512 Mb RAM 80 Gb hard drive. All was working prior to----I just unplugged the comp and took off cover to air out the dust.(due to fans blowing hard)I now have  PCI device unknownI suspect it is Nvidia GE-Force 6200 Graphics card. The Nvidia control panel is inaccessible and is not in Task mgr. When I re-started comp it said new hardware detected - but could not do anything.I know it has to be something GFX because I can longer use apps to create images.but it will play or display them.and when trying to install the nvidia drivers- during scan of system it says "install cannot continue"  "the graphic driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.Tried  adding new hardware- update-detect and come up with nothing.I also noticed when rebooting I get two error reports for a split second- IDK what they are.In DEVICE MANAGER it lists a ?Other PCI Device. I cannot make any graphics related images or use apps due to this. Why would unplugging comp cause this? and what is it? and what do I have to do to correct it?DEVICE DRIVER instancePCI\VEN_0440&DEV_8290&SUBSYS_200F14F5&REV_00\4&1C660DD6&0&10F0PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 1, device 2, function 0)I would really appreciate any... Answer:Unpugged comp -?PCI Device-No Gfx hardware?

IMO unplugging the PC would not cause harm if it was already off. More likely you dialoged something when you wee inside the PC. You nay have removed a power cable that goes to the Graphics card or motherboard  Or the PCI card is partly out of the socket. Make sure it is all the way into the slot.BTW, when blowing dust out of a PC it is best to use low pressure air and in some environments you must use a spray can with a propellantNote to moderator. I did not make that up.  se only canned air with a certified propellant. Just plain compressed air from a compressor may damage a  PC, Yes, I know, thousands of techs have used compressed air and never had a problem. The few that ruined a PC are too embarrassed to admit it.Yeah, the sigh says cloths. Should also say computer.[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]

For about a year now i have been reconsidering my decision to get a laptop prior to going off to college, thinking that the portability of it will be more important to me considering my degree plan and the need to take it to classes and the library. Well i will admit that it is handy to take it and write papers in the library, but thats about it. I have never taken it to class, and i find myself wishing that i had gone with a desktop pc instead. Mainly due to its higher power and "umpf" factor. So this year i have been looking around on all the big computer sites building computers trying to get an idea of what i want/needed. i ended up seriously considering a dell xps system, but then experimented in the barebones kit area on I ended up building(or choosing parts) that wound up being about 600 dollars cheaper than the dell, with about the same performance (atleast what i could tell). Now my big concern is really if this rig that i have "assembled" will do what i need it to do.

What im looking for is a computer that will be able to handle most of the games out there with very decent graphics, speed, effeciency. I will also need it to be able to do all the other school related stuff.

With that being said, here is the rig:

Barebones Kit: Ultra Blue Aluminus ATX Full-Tower Case with the Intel D975XBXLKR Motherboard, 600 Watt X-Finity PS & (2 x 512MB) Ultra DDR2 PC4200 Memory

CPU: Intel Pentium D 820 2.80GHz / 2MB Cache ... Read more

Answer:first time building comp, need suggestions on hardware

for now you should certanly stick with AMD on a socket AM2(Fx-62?)
and stay away from that video card it uses only GDDR2(not really high end card, cant handle full detail games) memory it's a 512mb but you can get better FPS with a 256mb GDDR3 card.
7800GT 256MB ; ATI X1800XTX ; 7900GTX ; ATI X1900XT
It's like the best you can get. Oh...and 7950 GT <- the dual card.
Of course only if you have enough money for the hardware i just mentioned.

As the title says I am building my first comp and I want it to have some really good stuff on it so I can play all the current and future pc games at the best quality with no lag problems.

My price range is around 1k-2k (or whatever it takes to build myself a great gaming comp). I only have 100 bucks right now, but after christmas and my b-day I should be getting a couple of hundred extra.

I am only going to be using this computer for gaming so I dont want a dvd drive or anything that I wouldnt need for gaming.

So I made this thread to get some price ranges and a list of stuff that I would need to put my comp together.

P.S. Would you recommend me using fans or water cooled system to keep the comp cool?

New infrastructure specs...
this is, of course, a long post. please bear with me.

Me and a few associates are going to be starting a computer business. We are going to purchase a building that has a second story for an apartment for all of us along with the first story for the business. In order to apply for grants, we need to get a list of the hardware we are getting along with the cost of such hardware. The business is going to cater to as many audiences as it possibly can. We will be a computer sales/repair store, networking store, full onsite service shop, internet cafe, gaming centre, and LAN party central. We plan to cater to as many audiences as we possibly can... Gamers, businesspeople, people wanting just a cheap system, SMALL LOCAL businesses needing servers and LANs set up, everything. I know prettymuch what i want, in general, to happen, but I find myself floored on just what, specifically, to get hardware-wise to start the store out. As to what specifically I need advice on, Well here goes.

Full T1 with a failover to cable. (NOT cable with failover to T1 as someone misinterpreted)
Going to play the bandwidth game by ear and add more T1s as needed.
small rack room, maybe a wiring closet? air conditioner running directly to it.
I plan on running a backup server taking snapshots of each server nightly.

I am still all for running a freeBSD software router despite comments here... if it fails we will failover to a SOHO NAT router setup... I am thinking a 5 ... Read more

Answer:starting comp biz, in charge of hardware purchases, advice?

One thing, to start with... Cliffs notes. They can actually be helpful, not just to readers, but can condense and solidify your ideas.

I'd say, pick some scalable hardware. Keep costs down, reliablity up, and all other maintince factors down. Remember, you can keep fixed costs, such as electricity, lower if you use fewer systems. SCSI is going to take a LOT, and yes, I do mean A LOT, of power. Using IDE might yeild lower performance, but honestly, slightly slower load times aren't going to kill you. Running one SCSI array with 6 disks in it cost me around $2/day, on the power bill. Running 2 top of the line systems and 3 lower end systems uses half that power. Also, if you're going to have these nice servers in a small or closed space, you're going to need a heat vac. 5X10k X 3? is a LOT of SCSI drives, and those drives make heat, and a lot of it.

Look around. Maybe use higher capacity drive clusters, maybe use IDE RAID. It's not as powerful, but it won't kill your power bill, nor will it generate heat. Large capacity HDD's in a mirror or RAID 5 should be just as secure and reliable as a set of SCSI drives in a similar setup. That might be a little easier to maintain, too. If you're going to UPS any of your systems, don't forget that each SCSI drive will drain that UPS faster. I don't know if you're going to use fileserver or external PSU setups for your SCSI drives, but either way, you will need an extra heavy duty UP... Read more

Ok here's the problem. I bought a Compaq Presario SR1055CL around 1.5 years ago, and it ran perfectly well. I installed Diablo 2, Half Life, Quake 3, all those ran without a hitch. I then installed Counterstrike 1.6. (steam powered). It ran for around 3 months on Direct3D without a hitch, but after an update from Steam, my CS just doesn't run anymore. It starts up, I enter a game, but 3 minutes later, my computer just reboots. EVERY TIME. Now I'm denegerated to playing CS on pixelated software renderer. Help! My eyes are going blind!

My brother just bought a computer and no OS was included. (HP D530 - slim desktop). I've tried installing Windows XP professional SP2 on it. This CD has worked perfect on my PC. But after I get to "press any key to boot from CD" and "setup is checking Hardware configuration" the computer restarts... Everything is onboard and no additional cards have been added as of yet.... I've temporarly installed Windows 2000 Just to see if there is a problem with the system in general...but 2000 works fine....It's just not the operating system my Brother wants.

Any information would be greatly appreciated...

Okay, I'll tell as much detail as possible because I would really like to know what the problem is.

Here are my specs:

A week ago, my computer was working perfectly fine. As i was opening My Documents, my monitor screen pixelized and my computer froze. I re-booted up Windows and when I got into the logon screen, I saw the pixelized screen again and my computer froze. I repeated this 3 times, then I booted Windows in safe mode. When I got to the logon screen everything was pixelized so oddly. It was like: I the right half of my screen was on the left and the left half was on the right. My computer didn't freeze however. I was still able to makeout where my cursor was, and I logged in. Everything was still pixelized and half parts of the screen on opposite sides as mentioned earlier. I plugged in my external hardrive and was able to backup most of my data, although it was very difficult to navigate. At some points I saw two cursors. The reason I wasn't able to backup all my data was because my computer suddenly froze then the screen went black. (I had already backed up my most important data.) I turned off my computer manually and turned it back on after waiting a few minutes.

After I turned on my computer, nothing was appearing on my monitor except the "monitor not connected symbol". I checked if t... Read more

I have been reading on different sites to download different anti-spyware programs. Right now I have:

3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert
5. Spyware Blaster
6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

Answer:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared:
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner:

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

Answer:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

I have a 32bit comp, W7 Ult, 1TB HD and I would like to clone that onto a comp that is a 64bit. HD is the same capacity, question is, can this process be done? Will the programs from the 32bit work in the 64bit comp.? I'm thinking of using Acronis True Image Home 2011.I was given a newer desktop minus the HD and was going to retire my old desktop and I wanted what was on the old comp(32bit) transfered to the new (64bit) tower. Thanx in advance for any advice.

Answer:Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

Answer:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

Answer:Upgraded comp but now comp keeps restarting

First you need to turn off automatic restart. Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced System settings, Start Up and Recovery, settings and un-check automatically restart

My Grandson has been given a new computer for his birthday and what he would like to know is if there is a way to download "his stuff" from his old computer onto his new one.His old computer's operating system is Win 98 and does not have a CD re-writer so he cant back them up and transfer them that way.Can anyone recommend a way to achieve this without any danger of making the warranty void? I don?t know if there is a programme that enables you to connect the two Computers together via USB , his old one does have a USB1 port, so we would appreciate any advice on how to do thisMany thanks for any advice

Answer:Advice on downloading from old comp to new comp

A USB thumb drive would do the trick - costs about a tenner online for one.An alternative which shouldn't void a warranty (but check first) would be to take the drive out of the old one and put it in the new one as a slave drive and copy data from there.

Answer:Transferring music - comp to comp

Not sure what the best way would be but I'll tell you how I do it.

I remove the HDD from the old machine, put it in the new machine, just temporary, pretty much hooked up but still sitting on the bench, boot the new machine, it sees the second drive and then just use explorer to transfer the files from one drive to another. The whole thing would take 10-15 minutes.

PC-Chips Model: A13G + Motherboard with socket AM2
AMD X2 2.0 ghz processor
2gb DDR2 Memory
80GB SATA hard drive
Onboard 128mb Nvidia GeForce 6100 integrated
Realtek HD Audio

the only game i play online is counter strike condition zero. this game worked great on my old emachines computer which only had:
3.0 ghz intel celeron d processor
1gb DDR Memory
80 Hard Drive

but when i play on the new computer it lags misserably. i drop down to like 10-15 fps when there is gunfire happening and my ping goes up to like 300 .. i thought maybe it was the video card so i threw in my PCI ATI radeon 9250 from the emachine. but that didnt help it at all. So why is this nice new computer which can do everything else so fast running such an old game with horrible results?

Here is an interesting question: How do you keep your computer in optimal health, and what do you use to keep your computer secure?

Here's my list:
Norton SystemWorks 2003 with full-time antivirus protection, automatic LiveUpdate, Norton System Doctor (a monitoring program) booting at startup, Speed Disk automatically running every Friday morning at 1:00 AM, a full checkup/fix for both of my hard drives and their files along with the Registry done Friday at 11:00 PM, a full virus scan every Saturday morning at 1:00.
Ad-aware Professional: full scan every Friday at 3:00 in the morning, Ad-watch running full time to scan for incoming adware.
ZoneAlarm Pro running full time, including Web Scanning (basically all the features are enabled).
Dantz Restrospect: full backups to my second hard drive every Sunday night at 11:30 PM. Incremental backups every night at 10:00.
Iomega Automatic Backup: Incremental backups into same area as Dantz incrementals every time I save a file.

Yes, sometimes it hogs memory, but it's worth it. Never have been infected with anything bad since I first started using all of these, and have only formatted once (just for a nice fresh start )

What do you guys do?

Answer:Is your comp. "bullet-proof"? In other words, what do you do for your comp's health?

I run Symantec 8.1 corp addtion unmanaged. I run a scan maybe once every few weeks.

Adaware once in while to clean out some random cookies.
Never had an infection and the only thing I back up are my mp3s, movies, pictures on a secondary hard drive.

A slight problem I have had for a while now which has recently become more frequent and problematic:

The Windows XP Hardware Insert and Hardware Remove sound effects keep playing, one after the other, at varying speeds and regular intervals, when there is no hardware being inserted or removed!

Furthermore, when this happens it affects the computer adversely, causing it to hang momentarily while the 2 sounds play. This is a particular pain when recording video, as it leaves moments of frozen frames on the file.

It used to occur quite rarely, but at the moment it is very frequent and is driving me up the wall!

Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

I'm having some real issues with my Dell XPS 400 and I'm desperately seeking help. I'm running WinXP Pro and this pc
is only about 16 months old. It has the original factory installed ram (1 gig) , a 320 gig hard drive and the processor is an
Intel ViiV. I have been getting a blue error screen with ***Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check
/ Memory Parity Error - System was halted*** that lasted for a few hours. I had to hold the power button in for several seconds each time
to shut it down. I ran both the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic tests, as well as the Memtest 86 , each several times. The results were always
"no memory errors". I attempted a few times, unsucessfully, using the F11 key to reach the Acronis recovery partition. I booted using my XP
disk but was unable to re-install. Windows would begin to load and then the blue screen with the same error message would occur. Finally,
I was able to access the Acronis recovery manager and restore my pc but on reboot it began to run ChkDsk. Now it keeps rebooting and running
a new disk check over and over and over..........................I have tried to cancel the ChkDsk using the keyboard but it keeps running. I'm at a loss, as to what else,
if anything I can do, (besides ripping my hair out by the roots)

Answer:Solved: HELP? Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check

UPDATE: I was waiting for the Dell hardware diagnostics test results to finish. It took several hours and basically the same result as the memory tests. No hardware failure, I'm thinking motherboard?

I think Microsoft should step up in the release cycle of upcoming Lumia phones as it is a tad behind in terms of hardware and software features.
Hardware picks: Fingerprint, hearth rate monitor, 2k screen and stylus.
Software features: More toggle options in action centre especially data connection toggle, an health app by swiping to the right from the home screen, app sorting in menu and multitasking window.

When using WinXP the icon for the above appears in the task bar enabling procedure for safe removal of hardware. This does not appear on my PC running Win98SE and so I have just been unplugging whatever hardware when I need to disconnect. I have not experienced any problems but when I did this today I got various messages up on the screen telling me that it was dangerous to do this as data etc could be lost and in fact, Spybot stopped running because of this. I then noticed I had the Safely Remove/Unplug or Eject Icon on the task bar. Can you advise as to how I can get this displayed on Win98SE whenever I connect an external hardware device please.

Answer:Safely Remove Hardware / Unplug or Eject Hardware

The safely remove function is part of XP and cannot be installed on 98 i'm afraid. Its designed to prevent corruption on any sort of USB hard drive (hard drives, usb memory sticks, digi cameras etc) and i would highly recommend using it to prevent data corruption. In 98 you'll have to turn off the PC to safely remove such devices. Annoying but these sorts of devices weren't as prevailent when 98 came out so the function wasn't dreamt up till later...

Corruption and blocks appeared and disappeared. I was forced to shut it down during the blue screen as something big wasn't working during the crash dump process, it stood at 0%.Upon restart the unit screen doesn't turn on and no noises are made like beeps indicating an issue. The Bluray makes its usual prep sounds it does at every start up. It sits with a blank screen that doesn't even appear to be powered on. The only other indicator is the caps lock key flashes a few times and goes off, then flashes a few times and goes off, repeating this sitting there..What part likely died on this sucker? CPU? Dram? Motherboard? Graphics card? How can I trouble shoot it if it doesn't power on ..While it sits there various LEDs on the keyboard are on as said .. Caps lock flashing.Power LED on. Recently had a virus on my computer. Had to take it to the geek squad to get it fixed. Brought it home the other day and it would not connect to my wireless network (I am on the other laptop in my house that does still connect). It would connect before I got it "fixed". I brought it back to the store the next day and they tried a few things. I will connect to their wireless in the store.

I originally had Geek Squad come out earlier this year to set up my wireless router and the guy who helped me at the store said it might be because of a certain way he set my computer up to connect to the router which got erased when my computer had to be restored.

Now they want to charge me an extra $89 for them to come back out to the house and fix it.

Is there anything I can do to try to fix this myself without forking over even more money?

Answer:Comp just restored, network will not assign network address to comp

If nothing else works, try installing all the drivers, Windows will tell you if the driver will work or not. Good luck and post results plz.

Hi everybody :

I've been looking at some hardware for my spare parts. I need some advice. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard, that uses an Intel Core i3 processor LGA 1155 , Corsair 2Gb (takes two chips) DDR3 PC10600 1333Mhz. I purchased all this around the same time.....July 2013. The computer is still functioning okay (a few "bumps" here and there). Usually, under, at least, fair conditions, how long SHOULD the memory last? Before it goes bad ? And the same question for the processor ? I'd like to be able to get some spare parts, just in case. In a last case scenario, I would probably have to do it all over again.......the MOBO, Processor and memory.

Answer:Computer Hardware [moved to Hardware>Building]

RAM and Processors don't wear out or fail due to time. RAM can fail for many reasons but if it is currently functioning there's no reason it won't continue to run forever. Things that could kill ram are failing power supply, voltage issues on the motherboard, power surges, static charges, etc. Processors are even more resilient. If the processor is run withing specified parameters it will run forever.

It's much more likely for a hard drive to fail. Motherboards can fail for many of the same reasons that RAM can fail. In all my time building and using computers, I've never had RAM fail or a CPU fail but I have had motherboards or components of the board fail and certainly hard drives have failed.

Let me put this way: I have a medium-ranged machine that can support pretty much all major applications and games out there ( With the exception of those high-end games that have recently released ) However, for some unknown reason, there have been games in wich i have had a few issues. Here's what's constantly happening:

1- Whenever i look at more graphically detailed areas in certain games, the entire response time slows down. The game runs slow basically. And of course, if i move my mouse to areas that are not as detailed, it all responds flawlessly during those few seconds.

2- And now for the strangest part. Whenever i'm in servers with alot of people, the issues mentioned above tend to happen very frequently, and of course, when i'm in servers with 2-6 people or so, the issues mentioned above never happen.

I have no idea why this has been happening. I Cleaned my computer properly. I do virus checks every now and then. I have recently de-fraged my Hard Drive. I Clean up cookies, temporary files, etc.

Here's what i think: It most certainly isn't the graphics card's problem, as even when i put my settings (in games) all on the lowest ones possible.( this includes resolution ) I still have the issues mentioned above. But that's just a guess...

I'm not sure what could be doing this.. CPU maybe? The fact that my Computer's drive is nearly at it's maxed capacity? I tend to install alot of things.. could a nearly fille... Read more

I just got a new computer with Windows 7.

My old computer has Windows XP on it.

I need to get all my old saved Incredimail mail from my old computer to my new one.

I just dont know how.

Here is what I have done so far...

Installed Incredimail on my new computer with Win 7.

I then looked online to find out where the back up files for Incredimail emails are and found them on my Win XP comp. I then downloaded that file to a flash drive thinking I could find the same file on my computer with Win 7.

The pathways are supposed to be:

I was able to find the second one on my XP Computer. But when I went to transfer the file to my Win 7 Computer, I could not find the appropriate folder. There IS no Documenst and Settings. Nor is there a an IM or Identities folder.

What do I do?

I REALLY need to have these old messages. There is some very important info I need to have.

Answer:Incredimail From XP Comp to Win 7 Comp, help?

They have a tool in the program to do this: IncrediMail Help Center: How do I transfer all of my IncrediMail files and settings to another computer?

In Win 7, the folder is Users, not Documents and Settings. From there, it's probably Roaming, but I'm not positive. I don't and won't use Incredimail.

Hey, I have this PIII HP in my closet with like a 10 GB HD, and I wanna take it out and stick it in my current comp. I know I'll need to reformat it and clean it completely, but how would I go about doing that? I don't have the original 98 disc, just 2 emergency backup disc thingys. Would I just put the XP Home disc in and go from there, or what? All I wanna use this HD for is my stuff. No games, programs, nothing like that. Just my files.

Answer:Old comp HD to my current comp

Are you planning on having this drive as your primary harddrive?

If so plug it into the computer, make sure you have the right jumper settings, if you're unsure use the Cable select setting.

Turn on your computer, go into your bios (also called setup), check your boot option make sure ATAPI or CDROM is before C:, pop in your windows XP cd, exit your bios (saving if necessary) let it boot up via the cd. Follow the instructions from there.

My old desktop crashed and cheaper to get newer one that has Win 7 Pro installed rather than repair. Old comp had been updated from Win 7 to Win 8 and then Win 8.1. I have bootable Win 8.0 ISO dvd and key. How can I "transfer" the Win 8 that I bought and installed on old comp on to the newer one that has the Win 7 Pro on it?

Question: Xp Died on me

My computer will not boot. I get through post ok, windows xp pro starts to boot. It never finishes, though. I can boot into safe mode, and that's about it. I tried re-installing OS, and that worked until I ran Windows Update. First my games started screwing up so I reboot. For a while it would boot once in a while, but now it's just dead. Does anybody know if there is a bad update i should be avoiding? Here's my system specs, in case they help.
shuttle AN35N-N Ultra Mainboard w/ Athlon XP 2600+(barton core), Radeon 9550 VC, 512 DDR 2700, Western Digital 120GB drive. Couldn't find anything wrong on Microsoft's HCL. Suggestions, anyone?

Whenever i turn my Computer ON, the status light goes straight to orange/standby. The fan works and makes alot of noise, also i should mention the dvd drive does work fine. Other then this, nothing happens. MY monitor does not come on, as well as keyboard etc..

I came to the conclustion that my PSU had died, and so i brought a new one (same model..crappy dell 305watt one) and installed it. This fixed nothing, so can't have been the problem, now i have no idea.

I opened the case, then decided to turn it on, to my suprise it went GREEN and started up!! However i turnt it off and on again...only to go back to before. This has happened a few times but is very rare. i'd have to sit by my pc all day turning it on/off for this to happen, if it would.

I was adviced to unplug the ram/graphics card/dvd drive/hard drive. Then turn it on as i plugged one thing back at a time, to pin point the problem. This did not work either, the light just stayed 'orange'.

SO here i am, i would really appreciate some help Thanks for your time.

Question: It died....

I hope I don't sound too ignorant but I need help with a power supply problem. I have a Gateway Performance 500, P III puter. It has a Newton Model NPS 200PS-96C power supply. I use it for the grand daughters video games. Turned the system off on evening, everything was fine. It hasn't turned on since.  I also checked the on/off swith on front of the case. No fans work, no lights are on, no noise at all. I check some of the connections with a volt meter and get no voltage going to anything coming out of the supply. Ive tried three different web sites trying to buy a new supply, even gateway doesen't service this supply any longer. I'm not looking for this particluar type or size, I just want a supply. I was told by directron flat out that they couldn't help me. Is this the only supply that will work in this machine? Can I install one with more watts? I would be grateful for any advice and my two grand daughters said thanks also...

Answer:It died....

I believe it was HP that bought out Gateway you might have some luck at their site. Also if there is a repair shop in your area then remove the PSU and take it to them and ask if it is a "propietary" design. Explain your problem they may be able to tell you either way and or sell you a new one.As to the wattage the general rule is too much will do no harm but you never want to go lower...especially if you have added/updated any components.patio.  8-)

iv had my computer for about 2-3 years and NO problems at all EVER. but then it started restarting, and it gets worse every time, and now its come to a point that when you press the power button the fans all spin and stuff but theres nothing on the screen apart from 'no signal input'.
but then i clean it all out and iv even changed the heat sink and fan and themal solvant on and it turnes on for abit and then resarts. and now its just at the no signal input screen again.
its been dead for neally 2 weeks and nothing will get it working again.

its not the gaphics card either, i tryed others in my machine and didnt work, and i tryed mine in my dads machine and it worked, so its not the graphics card.

any ideas?

Was shutting down my pc earlier today and the power went out. after the power came back on i turned my computer back on... nothing. It starts up, displays my graphics card info, shows the intel splash screen then goes to a black screen with a single "_". This blinks a few times then disappears and that's where my pc stays.
I've treid to enter the bios to start it in safe mode but can't do that.
I put my Windows XP cd in, to boot from that, with the following result; same as above excpet after the "_" blinks a few times it says "press any key to boot from cd", i press a key. a few moments of black then "setup will scan your hardware configuration" (or something along those lines), then back to black and there it stays.

Can anyone come up with any suggestions for me? I'll be forever grateful.

I went to turn on my desktop PC today, and when I pushed the power button I heard a few seconds of a strange electrical buzzing noise. Then my UPS shut off and made a continuous loud beep until I pressed its power button.

To say the least, my PC will not turn on... at all. I tried different outlets and different power cables. It simply does not turn on. The UPS and everything else that was plugged into it (such as the monitor, tv, ps3, etc.) all seem to be working fine. My computer, however, is apparently dead.

My computer is one I built myself less than 4 years ago. It has a 700W power supply, which is definitely capable of powering more than I have in there.

I haven't started taking anything apart yet. I was hoping to maybe get some advice on here first...
Does anyone know what may have happened, and what I should do first? (before i try getting a new expensive psu?)

Question: My PC just died

Seriously, I built this computer from scratch a few years ago. The specifications aren't the greatest, but it served it's purpose rather well. After I put it together, it ran happily without fault, and even continuously - as in 24/7 while running programs overnight.

Recently however, it just gave up. One day, it froze. And I don't mean BSOD or the programs running stopped. I mean literally froze up. The last movements of the program running were frozen in time plastered across the monitor, even the mouse cursor was in suspended animation.

I shrugged, and switched it off. I figured maybe it had overheated, and seized up, right? After all, the only cooling system on board is the CPU's fan. After a while, I rebooted again, and everything seemed fine.

For about an hour, tops. Then it seized up again. Now, I'm not a novice to computers, but if you start quoting graphic card speculations and brand names, I'll stare back blankly, as these things have never interested me. Oh, and I'm a computer engineer myself, by the way. You know how it is, you spend all day fixing other people's systems, you tend to go "meh" when it comes to your own.

Back to the problem though. I took the entire system apart, and rebuilt it, after checking each component to see if something was obviously wrong. I couldn't find anything, although I may have overlooked something I suppose.

What I'm thinking is, it's definately a hardwar... Read more

Answer:My PC just died

Thanks for the book of info

Yes Ram and or Hard Drive can lock up after time, if they are faulty
Think of the hardware as only having one error in one place, that when accessed will then fault
Memory issues: Hard Drive and Ram, can also mean Video Card Memory, but it does sound like a "memory" issue

Start by running Memtest on your Ram, info here:

Question: T60 Died

OK here is the situation.  I have a T60 - love it and one day it just didn't turn on.  I pulled the battery and then charge light came on - when you go to turn it on the light goes off and it does nothing.  I have pulled everything out seeing if I could troubleshoot it.  My question is this - I am willing to buy a new board for it but I was hoping to get confirmation that it is really the problem.  The boards are not cheap if you can find them but I would hate to buy it and still be in the same shape I am in right now.  Any thoughts or suggestions or deterents from buying a board would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
