Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

Question: Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

My 30gb harddrive in my computer died a few weeks ago and a scoured the stores for a new hd. I found a Maxtor 250gb hard drive on sale at Fry's for $140. It was a great deal for the space but I have some questions on it's performance. It's P-ATA 133 with an 8mb cache,a seek time of 9.3ms and rotates at 7,200 RPM. I do a lot of multiasking with Everquest and just general gaming so my pagefile is huge and constantly used. I also do some video editing.

My real question is how does it rate for my needs. Should I look at buy another smaller hard drive to use as my main or keep use this as my only hard drive?

I have the hard drive split into two partitions right now and am wondering which partion actually is on the outside of the platters so I can properly put the pagefile in it's place? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

I have the drive. Its currently the only drive, and I use a separate partition for the pagefile, but don't see (and didn't expect) a performance improvement. I have a rig with the swapfile on separate drives and it was noticably faster. So I would definately recommend a keeping the old drive - wherever you put the OS, keep the swapfile on the other one.

I running 32bit amd 3000+on an asrock k8 mb with 1gb ram, however we wanted to mount two maxtor 250gb hd. in the bios the mb id's the drives but when uploading winxp pro only 131gb is seen. Will drive mounting software or a promise card be required???

Answer:Solved: Mounting 250gb harddrive

Do you have an xp disk with sp1? If your xp disk is an original xp [without sp1] you will need to either slipstream sp1 to see the full size on install or install with your disk and update to sp1 or sp2. After the update, you will see the rest of the drive as unallocated in disk management. You can create another partition in the unallocated space or use a third party app like partition magic to expand your existing partition into the unallocated space.

BTW if the mb ids the drives correctly with the correct size, you should not need a controller card.

I bought a 250 GB Samsung Evo SSD 840 for my desktop (850 isn't available in Canada yet). I'm running Windows 7 but am considering upgrading to Windows 8 or Ubuntu (or dualboot/vmware). My work is technical and to keep up with the times I am considering Windows 8, though I don't have a touchscreen. I am not sure the kind of configuration to use and am open to ideas. The current hard drive I have is a slow 1TB one. I was planning on setting up the SSD as a cache.

EDIT: my motherboard is Asus p8z68-v le

Answer:Setup with 1TB harddrive and fast 250GB SSD

I would not recommend setting up a cache at all with that large capacity SSD. Usually people cache with 64GB SSDs, but in your case, you might as well just migrate data to the SSD and use the HDD for bulk storage (large files).

I bought a new Seagate 250GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100 and would like to replace my old drive with it in my Dell? Dimension? 4400 (Pent 4 1.80GHz, 768mb Ram, running Windows XP Home). I need some advice on how I should format this new drive and then clone and replace my old drive with the new Seagate drive using Norton Ghost 2003.

What is best way to format the harddrive to get it ready to clone - using (Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk Management) or formating it via Windows XP CD or is there a better way/easier??? Thanks.

Answer:Formating and cloning to a new Seagate 250gb harddrive

You can use Seagates Disk Wizzard ( IMO the easiest & free)\

I've got a few questions about my new HDD, a Samsung S2 portable 320gb 2.5 usb
It says 480Mbit a second of transfer rate - although when I try to copy something it's like 10MB/sec
Does 2 hard drives increase performance? (Samsung is external and my other one is Internal)

Thanks!

Answer:Questions about my new harddrive

The HDD can handle 480Mbit/sec transfer but it also depends on how fast your computer can transfer the files.

My laptop runs like crap so I'm gonna get a new hard drive and upgrade the memory to something like a gig... I was wondering if this is something relatively easy? or should I leave it to a professional... I'm reasonably technically inclined....
Do I just pop out the old drive... Put in a new one... and swap the memory out... then install operating-system and boot from cd then partition/ format drive... And as for memory... is it as simple as swapping it out...?
The reason I'm doing this is because I want a larger drive, my computer runs slow, and when I try to reinstall windows xp from the cd, everything seems to stall when reformatting my hard drive- at 53%... tried it a couple of times and figured... hard drives are pretty cheap anyways...
And... If I do this... will this help my system run faster... the problem is I'm running ableton live and everything starts to bog down because I'm overtaxing everything... I don't want a lot more speed... just a little bit...
I've also read things about storing something such as my audio sample library on an external hard drive... instead of the main... does this help? SO thanks for reading this loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong post.....:duck

Answer:new harddrive questions?

Most laptop manufacturers provide instructions for replacing/upgrading memory, and replacing the hard disk. You just have to check around their SUPPORT section on the site. There's usually "pictorial" instructions on opening the unit and accessing the appropriate areas.

Just ensure that the hard disk and memory are compatable with your model. There may be a "cap" on the hard disk size supported by the machines bios. They should also list the "tested/compatable" memory modules for your machine. Just "any" memory module may not work correctly.

I am looking to upgrade to a higher gb and rpm drive. Right now I am 500 with 5200, and I want to be closer to 1tb with 7200 or higher rpm.

If I get this upgrade, would I have to buy Win7 and install all over again? I got a student discount deal the first time. I am pretty sure I loaded an ISO and entered my purchased code when I got the chance. Also, is it possible to reap a higher rpm drive while also having my old 5200 with all the data, as in use the 7200 for it's speed and the 5200 for all my old files? I would assume I just change the boot sequence to my new 7200+ drive and have two directories in My Computer?

In the end, I just want to use a higher rpm and storage drive without having to rebuy Win7 or leave my old files on my old drive (if possible).

I am a little above average with computer use, so assume accordingly

I'm planning on backing up about 3TB of data (mostly videos, music and games), and I would love some suggestions on how best to go about this. No, I don't have a Blu-Ray burner. Right now my data is spread between 2-1 and TB 1-500 GB drives (and a bunch of DVD-Rs).

First question: Would I be better off buying Western Digital 2-TB drives, or their dual 1-TB drives? From what I've heard in the past, it's best to go with smaller drives, as they have less errors. So perhaps the dual 1-TBs would be better? They're almost exactly the same price on Best Buy's website.

Second question: Would it be a good idea to set up a RAID array? I honestly know almost nothing about this, other than it allows separate drives to be operated like they were one massive drive (I'm planning on having 3 or 4 identical externals). Is this safe? Does it in any way increase my chances of drive failure, or have any other negative effects? Can it be done free and moderately easily?
Okay, I realize that was more than two questions... Thanks in advance for all the help.

Edit: Just realized this might not be in the right spot.. I'm not sure if it should be moved.

Ok, I am gonna buy me a new external Harddrive soon. Seems like all I can find is one with usb. While My case does have fi re wire support. Its a custom build.

Is it better to buy just a enclosure for the external, then go buy my own hard drive? (I THINK you can do that??)

Or should I just buy the whole setup with the harddrive??

Have a couple of cheep walmart external usb harddrives and Find them handy. So I thought maybe a bigger one may be just what I want. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Answer:external harddrive questions

Yeh, any 3.5 inch enclosure will hold any 3.5 hdd!

I would go for whichever option is the cheapest for you.

Does the new hdd have to be portable? if not go far an internal one, they will be cheaper and will mean less cables.

Ok, so I run a business from home and recently purchased an external hard drive because my PC was running out of space....plus I'm scared to death of losing all my info (even though it's all on paper as well). I've managed to get all my files and documents copied to my new external drive....but is there a way I can get my programs and registries, etc over there? I purchased a couple of programs online and don't have disks....and if I end up with a computer that crashes, I'd like to have those still without buying them again! Also, things like quickbooks, quicktax, I would like to save all the info....

AND, is there a way to save all my contact info from Outlook onto the drive as well?

Gee, I feel like a dunce!! But just trying to be safe!

Thanks for any advice!

Hi all I am having a little bit of trouble doing things right on my computer not too long ago I restored a system image of my backup to my WDC Hard drive and now I have 2 windows 7 64bit operating systems my hard drives both have windows 7 and obviously this is pointless for me on many levels I also recieved an SSD (Kingston HyperX 120gb) and am wondering if I can make it so that my windows and the programs and all other system files get transferred along with it just my games should remain on the WDC as it is 1tb and my games total to about 380GB is there any way to re-direct it so that my games all read off the WDC? also for the problem I stated earlier normally I would format the hard drive and be done with it but the backup of the system image is there and totals to about 771GB I would like to use that hard drive for that backup incase something unfortunate happens to my data the hard drive contains windows 7 and that's all I want to remove from it the backup must remain any answers would be appreciated.

Answer:How do I remove windows 7 from harddrive and questions about SSD

Post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management.

It would help understand what you are talking about if you would use an occasional bit of punctuation, such as a period. And maybe 2 or 3 paragraphs.

I read several posts here about eMachines mobo and how much they suck and all that... but, it's what I could afford and what I have to try and fix... so please bear with me as I can't just go out and buy another Non-eMachines computer.

A couple of months ago we had a lightning strike that fried all of our electronics connected to the cable and phone lines. My computer was affected... the USB ports are dead/not working, ethernet isn't working, audio ports aren't working but I can access all my content and even burn DVD's to save the content. I was told that the motherboard needs to be replaced (apparently you can't just replace usb ports and such, as they're part of the motherboard... which I didn't know)... at a cost that was more the the machines cost me to begin with. So, insurance paid out and I purchased the same machine.. the w5233. My question is... is it possible to take the hard drive from the fried machines and put it in the new one along side the one that's there... running 2 harddrives? (Please be nice... I'm totally computer stupid!) I don't want to overpay someone to do this, if it's possible to do, so on average... what would one pay for a job like this? I don't want to go in there completely without any knowledge, so I thought I would ask here.
Thanks for your time and expertise,
Kim

1. I'm thinking to buy a Displayport to HDMI cable. One review I read online claimed that Thinkpad T500's Displayport doesn't support sound. It raised my concern. Does my T410 support sound? 2. If I buy a new hard drive, how to copy the OS (Windows 7) to the new hard drive? I don't have disks. I don't think I have to pay for a new OS, do I? Thanks!

Answer:displayport sound and harddrive upgrade questions

1. Yes, the T410 does support audio over Displayport2. You could always make the R&R discs before installing the new harddrive or clone the harddrive.

Ok a question about cloning/ghosting a harddrive.

Now I have customer that has a dell laptop that will like to buy anothe laptop same model basically on ebay so then he can do a exact copy of the current laptop drive like a ghost/cloning then install that image that was created to the new used laptop off from ebay.

Now is this possible if so whats a good program to use? also does the new used laptop from ebay have to be the exact specs hardware components as the cloned drive one? thanks

Answer:question about cloning/ghosting a working harddrive OS to another same pc questions..

You can use Easeus-Disk-Copy The new laptop would need to be the same model #. You need to have the same motherboard and chipset. You then would take out the new laptops HDD and put it on a USB Adapter and attach it to the old computer. Format (erase) the new HDD and then clone the old HDD to the new with Easeus. After that is done, then put the drive back in the new computer start it up. That should boot normally and have all the files from the old computer. If for some reason the chipset is different and you get a BSOD then boot off of the XP CD and do a Repair Install

Answer:question about cloning/ghosting a working harddrive OS to another same pc questions..

If it's the same series of laptop (and I don't mean the brand - I mean if he has a Dell Latitude D620 for example and he's about to buy another D620, for example) then the only real difference in the hardware would most likely be either a faster or slower CPU (could be exactly the same, too), more or less RAM (which could be transplanted from the current machine), or most likely a different GPU (onboard vs discrete, or vice versa).

If that's the case - the models match - then cloning/ghosting is a fairly easy process. Could use something like Acronis True Image if he wants commercial software (if he has a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive of any kind he could get the stripped down version of that software from Seagate or Western Digital). If not, then a free solution like Clonezilla would be very useful as well, or DriveImage XML, etc. There are several free cloning/ghosting tools out there these days, take your pick, they'll all end up doing the same thing.

Note that cloning/ghosting doesn't mean just copying all the files from the source to the target drive; the process of cloning/ghosting is to create a bit-for-bit copy, with everything intact and matching on both drives when you're done, save for doing a proportional partition resize which the cloning/ghosting software should handle automagically.

That's about it - if you've got more questions, just ask.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows Setup Disk cannot find Harddrive, even with a brand new harddrive installed.

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

Is the drive going to sleep now ?

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

Hi guys, I want to connect my ps3 hard drive on pc to use it on pc, so when I get my new computer I can use it with it straight away, but right now I want to use it on my current pc, I plugged in both the one cable and the other one (sata), that goes from power supply cable to the HDD.

when I booted the pc it said installing device drive software, and said, device is ready to use, I go to my computer, and it ain't there, do I have to set it as secondary in bios?

Win7 Ultimate final rev

It's automatically set as fourth IDE master. restarted pc and still doesn't show up, I heard I need to format, is that true? like that to know if I should re-gain windows 7 disk

Oh and t's actually 320gb

Answer:250gb hdd ps3 on pc?

Open up Disk Management (in the admin tools control panel), it should show up in there. I'd delete all the partitions and create 1 new one that incorporates the whole disk. Then format as NTFS.

Hi,

I'm sure this is simple, but I can't figure it out and searching google hasn't found me any answers. I am building a new system. It all works fine. But I have a WD 250GB hard drive I"m using. When I boot from WinXP Pro CD, and go to format the drive and install the OS, it only tells me I can format 130GB of space. Nowhere to be found is the rest of my drive...

Any thoughts as to what I"m doing wrong here?

Microsoft added the ability for Windows to see hard drives bigger than 137 GB in Service Pack 1 (and Service Pack 2).

If you have access to another PC, download Service Pack 2 (which includes Service Pack 1 btw), and integrate it into your install source and burn a new CD from which you can install. You can find good instructions for doing that here:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

You can download Service Pack 2 (full 266 MB package) from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

As a workaround, you can create a partition less than 137 GB, install Windows, and then install Service Pack 2 and you will be able to access the rest of the hard drive. Then you can partition the rest from the Computer Management interface (right-click "My Computer" > Manage...)

Hello, I just ran out of room on my 500GB HDD, Its a 7200 RPM and I like the speed of it. I started looking for a new HDD when I came across an 60GB SSD. I never thought of buying an SSD before. Now I can't decide if I should get the SSD or the HDD ( same price) I need a new drive for linux, but my current drive only has 3GB left. I was going to partition 30GB to linux and keep 30 for Windows. Then transfer my OS to the remaining 30GB, that would free some room. I am a gamer so I need alot of room for games. If I get the 250GB HDD then I would have alot of room for more games and linux. But then I would not be able to boot Windows 7 in seconds. What should I get?

My specs:
Intel core i5 2500K ( stock speed )
MSI - H61M-P20(G3)
8GB of Vengeance DDR3 RAM @ 1333 CAS 7
GTX 550 Ti 1 GB ( Overclocked )
1 500GB 7200 Western Digital Caviar Blue HDD
500W PSU.

Answer:SSD 60GB or HDD 250GB?

Go with an SSD. If you choose the 60GB SSD, you will have just enough space for the OS and a Office Suite and a few other apps before you start to run out of space. If you can afford it, go with a minimum of 128GB SSD as your primary drive, then wipe your 500GB mechanical drive and use as a storage drive.

Maxtor 250

Just put a Maxtor 250 GB into my mate's machine, Maxblast3 will only let me have 137GB, Windows XP will only see it as 31.4GB. I've managed to partition & format it in my own machine correctly but when I put it back in his, it F***s up again

I've updated the Via 4in1, the bios is already updated to the latest version

I'm guessing a new MB is in order ??????

Answer:Maxtor 250GB seen as 137

i've had that 2 with my 200Gb, windows only allowed 138Gb
do you have SP1 installed cuz that seemed to do the trick on with my 200Gb

Hi
I have looked through previos questions but couldn't find a solution. I have a 250g USB driven HDD not recognised by ny PC. I used the HDD on my TV so I think it will probably need reformatting. When plugged in it appears in Disk Management but without a drive letter and when I right click on the drive most of the options, including allocate letter are greyed out. Any solutions?
TIA

Answer:USB 250GB HDD not recognised by PC

I would recommend PartedMagic, it is now paid for software, but at only $4.99 it is a sound investment. Download it, burn it to a cd or put it on a USB stick and boot from it.
Have the suspect drive connected and PartedMagic should be able to see it and it will enable you to format the drive, whatever the existing filesystem is.

I have two 250GB hard drive in my pc and I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP2. It's running on an Abit motherboard with Athlon 64 dual core 4400+ CPU. I got the computer from a friend and decided to do a clean install so I deleted the previous partions and made a new one. It went through the whole formatting process fine then went through the windows setup. It then did an automatic reboot but right after POST it gave me an error message. It said Trap followed by 0000005c ==============EXCEPTION=========================== and a series of hexdecimal messages afterworsd. I've done this twice and had the same problem and I just wanted to know if you guys knew anything about this?

Answer:Installing Win XP Pro SP2 on two 250GB HDD

Greetings gfx dude, Welcome to TSF!

Firstly, you only need to install the Operating System one ONE of the HDD's not both of them.
The second HDD can be connected as a "Slave" and can be used to 'save' everything that you download, plus emails and other data, such as music etc.
I suggest that you check the CD for scratches and marks; wipe it very gently from the centre to the edges with a lint free cloth.
To give you the best chance of getting Windows? installed without hassles, such as those you are experiencing, is to completely wipe the HDD with Darik's Boot N Nuke.
Wiping the HDD this way will completely erase everything off the HDD and take it back to a RAW unformatted state, as if it had just come out of the factory.

Just so that you do not forget anything when doing the installation, please read this...

The Windows? XP Installation Check List.

1. The Windows? XP SP2-CD (naturally)

2. Darik's Boot N Nuke (Click the coloured Link).

3. Please read this guide.

4. The Motherboard CD that contains all the necessary Drivers etc.

A couple of tips...
a. Darik's Boot N Nuke will take about 4? hours to completely wipe the Drive; however, this will vary depending on how big the Drive is. (That estimate is for a 80Gb HDD).

b. When you get to Figure 7 in 'The Guide', you can create more than one partition here by simply telling Windows? how big you want it. Should you do decide to create an extra parti... Read more

hi ,everybody i have a dell d600 laptop with a 40 gb harddrive and 2 gb memory . my question is i am trying to install a 250 gb harddrive ,but the laptop doesn't recognise the drive ,so i can't install windows on it . i even bought vista .the laptop won't recognise the drive .help

Answer:250GB Hdd Not Recognized

Hi,

What do you mean the laptop won't recognize the 250GB drive? Do you mean in the BIOS? When trying to install Windows? You can try to download a linux LiveCD like Knoppix or Damn Samll Linux and boot from that (F9 or F12 at the Dell BIOS) and see if it sees it. If so, format with QTParted or Fdisk and then try Windows again. Maybe the drive is bad.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi

I've recently reinstall a fresh copy of XP Pro, I got a Gigabyte 8inxp MB, a WD 250GB install on primary channel as Master, with 2 partition, 125GB each

I've also got a Maxtor 250GB connect to ATA133 card

Before, I got everything up and running , then I install Maxtor drive, card, and Maxblast 3

and I have drive C = 125GB, D = 125GB, and G = 250GB(this is the Maxtor)

then I do a boot-from-cd and install a fresh copy of XP Pro
now I cannot see my Maxtor

I tried to use my Maxblast3 software to mount the drive, but it say it only detect the Windows drive, therefore it won't let me run

When I tried to run Maxblast3 in DOS (from a floppy), I have to format and erase everything, I don't want to do that, I have some important documents on that drive that I do not want to lose

all drive were NTFS

Hello,

I do not know what happened.. but I lost... 250gb+ of my files in my laptop. On the HDD where was 40gb free space now there is 326gb..
Most of my programs that I had... they just disappear... same with the movies.. (but for example .3gp files still are there)
Moreover, option "restore system" was disabled...

Those are logs from the OTL.. I dont know if it will help...
OTL - http://wklej.to/wfa5K
Extras - http://wklej.to/l4yKb

I gave this laptop to a computer shop.. but all they did was trying to install antivirus.. then they did that checkdisk when you start the computer... before the login window (it took like 2h or maybe even more)... after that I took the computer back...
Now I dont know what to do, because files can be overwritten, due to the system partition.
And giving this laptop to a professional shop that is specialized in restoring files will cost me SO MUCH.

I beg you for help... on the HDD I had very important things

Thanks in advance,

I've been looking at some of the features in Samsung Magician, and ran the Benchmark test twice. Both times I got very high scores, above the max listed in the program for all 4 tests. I have the drive set to MAXIMUM RELIABILITY. Just wondering about the scores reliability.

Scores in Parentheses are Samsung 's listed maximum high:

Sequential Read
549 mb (540)
Seq write
532mb (520)
Random read
97442 (97000)
Random write
70189 (66000)

Answer:Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb

Benchmarks are artificial at best [and a benchmark from the mfg is tailored to that particular piece of hardware] I would think you would get different results using a another benchmark program such as ATTO.

In short do not put too much emphasis on any given benchmark. Modern ssd drives are reliable and it should last for quite a while so I would not worry about the drive.

Question: 250gb hd problem

Hitachi 250gb hd, was working fine, everything was ok. It was split into two partitions a 128Gb clip, and a 104 gb clip. The 128gb clip had information on it. Now the drive is recognized in bios properly. When it boots to windows it comes up as 8gb, and has information on it, but I can't access it. One more thing the drive now says fat, when originialy it was ntfs. Under manager, The drive says it is split at 138g and 104 gb. Any ideas? when I run a drive test the drive says it has a bad cable, I swapped the cable out three or four times, to no avail.

I think I have it all listed, oh windows xp home, installed on it's own drive.

Answer:250gb hd problem

Has nothing to do with drivers or Spyware, it is more of a Bios issue. What is the manufacturer and model of the computer that this drive is in? Also, do you have SP2 installed for XP?

Hi,
I just bought a maxtor DiamondMax10 250GB HDD...
and i bought an external case so i can use it on my laptop(toshiba A-50)..

I have used a 400GB external Drive on the same laptop before..
I have also used 200GB external drive before on the same laptop..
all of my previous hdd were western digital....

The problem is:
I wanted to format (partition) the hdd... but the computer said that the capacity (unformatted) is around 2 TB
i tried to format it as one partition, it wont do it...
I tried to minimize the capacity to an acceptable (close to real) level (set it to 230Gb) but it wont do it...

I tried to format it using FAT32, and it worked but to a maximum of 200Gb, it is ok... but the problem is that i can only use 10 GB after that the harddrive gives an error (write-protected)...

1- have anyone used Maxtor drives before as externals???
2- Have any one came across this problem before ???
3- Will it work in a normal PC or not?? (just to format it)... because getting a pc in here is quite difficult

Thanks in advance....

NOTE:
I used the windows XP disk managment tool...
and i used also Partition Magic 8.0....
all with the same results...

Question: Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

I just bought a new deskstar 250Gb Hdd which I am trying to install in my Compaq Pressario S3190UK

I know its got to be set to slave but I wasnt sure if I should set it up as a
16 head, a 15 head , 32 byte clip or auto spin dissable and all of those choises are available on the drive

I went for 16 heads and booted up

In " my computer " the new drive does not appear ( I still see all my original drives there) yet in System/Hardware /device manager it shows up under drives and on clicking its properties it says this device is working properly

Without seeing it in the " my computer folder " I cant really format or partition it so I then tried partition magic
That saw it fine and reported its size correctly . I told it to create an ntfs partition and use all the drive . It changed color as it should and all that was left was to click on make changes now but when I did that it went straight back to tell me the new drive had no partitions created

I tried various combinations, of primary or logical drive , small or large partitions and fat or ntfs but always it refuses the last step of actually creating the partition .
What am I doing wrong ?

Regards

Don

Answer:Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

First I will assume your drive is showing up as the full size in the bios and is corrrectly identified.

If you are using either xp or win2k. Go to disk management; start>run type in diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. See if your drive shows up there; it should be listed as disk1, disk0 will be the master drive. If it shows up there, you need to partition and format the drive. Right click on the drive and choose to create a partition; I like extended partitions for data / storage drives. After you create the partition, right click again and choose to create logical drive. You can make the entire drive one partition or organize it into say 3 logical drives; whatever you want. After you create the logical drive you will need to format them. Again right click on the logical drive and choose format. Use ntfs for your drive. In fact if you use partitions greater than 32 gig, fat32 is not even an option.

Just think about how you want it organized before you start.

Hello, I'm hoping I can find a solution to my problem here as I couldn't find one elsewhere on the net.
I have a laptop and currently have a 120GB hard drive in an external enclosure. I have just bought a new 250GB hard drive and have installed it in the external enclosure. Though partitioning and formating the 120GB was a breeze, I've had nothing but problems with the new 250GB.
Below are the specs of what I'm working with. In both Partion Magic and in the Win2000 Disk Management, it correctly displays the 250GB drive (233GB). Regardless of which program I use (ie. Partion Magic, Win Disk Management, command line FORMAT) I get problems.
Generally, what will happen is it will partition fine. Then it will begin to the formatting process (VERY slowly) and then either throw an error either during or at the end of the process. And this is when I try to format a very small partition (ie. 100MB). I have successfully formated a 10MB partition. On a large partition (ie. 30GB) the format process will start but will not progress.
The only two things I can think of is that the drive is faulty, or because I am booting my OS from a floppy there is some sort of recognition problem.
I can't run the diagnosis software from Maxtor because that requires the drive to be installed internally.
So any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, how long should it generally take to format the 250GB drive in its entirety?

If I look at the properties individually on C: drive (windows, program files, docs and settings, etc) they add up to approx 1.5GB but C: properties is 134GB?any suggestions as to why XP is reporting the use incorrectly and a possible fix much appreciated.TIA

I recently installed a pair of 160gb drives and found on the Maxtor site that in order for the true capacity to be recognised by Windows you need 2 things[otherwise it only recognises up to 137gb];1 - to be running Windows SP12 - to run the Maxtor Big Drive Tool[available from Maxtor support website]

Hey guys.
I setup my system on a 250gb hard drive but system reads it as a 127gb. I downloaded the software for converging it to its original form yet it won't let me as it is the C:// drive. If anyone can point me in a direction that might be able to assist, that would be awesome (i.e. a possible partition of the space that wasn't originally read?) THANK YOU!

Answer:Op sys is on 250gb, reads as 127gb

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2? That is the usual cause for this problem.
If you do not, you mayl not be able to partition the drive to anything larger than 132 GB... 127 or so after formatting the partition.
It becomes a catch 22. You could partition and format the hard drive to the 250 GB figure, if you had Windows XP Service Pack 2 to do the setup of the NTFS partition. It will work once as the full 250, or so, once it has Windows on it, but getting Windows on it prevents that.
There are solutions online you should be able to find with a Google search, but they require jumping through a few hoops.
One solution is to setup the hard drive as a slave in a computer that has Service Pack 2... or setup the drive with two partitions while slaved in another computer.
Alternately, set it up as 127 GB, then upgrade Windows with the Service Pack 2 disk you buy from Microsoft for $3.40, then use partition magic or Acronis to enlarge the partition.

Hi,
Bought a new Western Digital Sata HDD which I got today.
New in anti static bag and labelled WD2500AABS, says on it 250gb.
When I put it in my PC it shows as 40gb.

I am new to this forum and desperate to find a solution to my problem. My colleague told me of this service and here I am.I had a Windows98 PC with an external Maxtor 250GB firewire connected to it. I took the main HD out (the one with the w98) and installed new one and installed a newly purchased copy of XP. At this point I've connected my Maxtor without installing the driver thinking that XP would recognise it, but nothing happened. I installed the driver but nothing? it can be seen in the disk management as disk 1 and that's all; the next step would be a format, which I refuse to do it.I reinstalled my old drive (w98) back into the case, win98 started as normal, I connected the Maxtor and to my big surprise this drive is not being recognised anymore; even when the PC configuration is exactly what it used to be. I only can see the Maxtor through fdisk but not anymore as a 250GB FAT32, apparently now is a 40GB FAT !?!?!!.Please help me. I have far too much data on this drive including pictures going back 4 years and documents. This drive is a back up of my previous PCs. I cannot afford to lose this data.ThanksAndy

Answer:Cannot see Maxtor 250GB Firewire W98 pc --> XP pc

The data's probably there, just need to connect OK. I had trouble with my Maxtor OneTouch when I connected it without the Maxtor drivers installed, even on WinXP. Suggest you install Maxtor drivers properly before connecting. If that doesn't work take the drive to another WinXP comp, but install the drivers first!

Hi, I have Lenovo S500 and after I install the OS, the partition OEM Reserved is hidden in Windows and I want to use this because it's to large(it's not a few GB... it's almost 250GB, and i think that it's too much).I want to know why is created this partition? What's his function? Sorry for my bad english. Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo OEM Reserved 250GB

Hi Rxgamer,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I understand your concern, but let me inform you these partitions contain recovery image and Drivers/Default Applications. By deleting the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) partition the system will loose its ability to "Factory Reset/ OKR (One Key Recovery)" of the system.

Do post us back for further queries.

Bought a new 250 g hd for my box. I want to install xp pro. I am at the stage where it shows 1 partition at 131 gb

Xp pro disk in cd bay, boot disk in floppy.

Any help would be appreciated
Dave

Answer:New 250gb hd 131 showing? Partition Help??

Plain-Jane XP by default will only recognize drives up to 132GB. If you create an SP2 slipstreamed CD using autostreamer, it will recognize the full drive upon install. Or, complete your install, update to SP2 and then use the "diskmgmt.msc" command in the "run" line to format the remaining hard drive as a second partition.

I have a 250gb Maxtor Diamondmax10 SATA harddrive. In windows it only reads/writes up toe 233gb, it shows that thats its limit. In everest and every other diagnostic tool (hell even BIOS!) they all say that its 250GB. Any idea how I can get my other 17GB back??

Answer:250gb HD only gets 233gb on Windows!

Upgrading Service Pack might help.

Also goto disk managment and see if theres any unallocated space.

Hi, Does anyone have any experience of this USB External hard drive? I think my Western Digital 'My Book' is going to pack up soon, so need to find a replacement. Yesterday i asked about a Buffalo drive and got some positive responses, but this one looks good too (and tiny in size). Thanks - Tony

Answer:Seagate 250gb FreeAgent Go/2.5

I use a Buffalo drive however, and it's extremely reliable - the only irritation is the incessant humming noise the drive motor makes.

Hi,

Just purchased a new Samsung SP2514 250 gig hdd and XP can only see 32239mb.

Tried using samsung's drive overlay to install xp, but gave up + uninstalled it -(the drive overlay).

I booted from the Xp cd + installed but XP only sees 32....gig's.

I have enabled big LBA by using EnableBigLba from www.48bitlba.com to no avail.

From searching through the forums, I see that a BIOS update may be necessary.

Do I also need to update my motherboard + chipset?

If so, are reliable updates available free on the net?

Any step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance

Hi,

1st off sorry if this has be told before,

I have a 250gb external hdd which now only show 100mb.

It was an old hdd out of an old 7 laptop (which got accidently dropped and insurance replaced) I asked for the hdd back, which when I got it back was fine and working well, I did a quick format and not used it for over a year,

come to use it now to store movies and pictures on and it say volume 100mb?

How do I get the rest back?
Cheers

Answer:250gb hdd showing only 100mb

Can you see it in Disk Management? (right click on My Computer and select Manage, then go to Storage > Disk Management). Disk Management (What It Is and How To Use It)
Is it showing the drive? Does it show the total disk size?

But the other day my m8 was installing Windows 7 on his laptop, so he filled my hdd up with all his backup, and their wasnt any more space left, the next day i plugged it in & the white light was flashing, but i could not go inside it, it just appears as a "Local Disk (F)" on My computer, and the same on my m8's, (and if u double click it, then a sign appears stating that (F) is nt accesible because of an I/O error). oh and i recently changed it from FAT to RAW cuz it wouldnt allow me to move more than 2gb at a time, dnt knw if that mite be important, any thoughts cuz i reeli need the data....?

this summer i built myself a new computer. i was having sum trouble getting windows installed and thought it might be 1 of the HD's so i unhooked it. once i got it going i kind of forgot about the 250GB HD until just recently. i hooked it up and formatted it but it only showed up as a 127GB HD when it's supposed to be 250GB. this is very puzzling because on the post screen it clearly reads that it's a 250GB HD.

can someone please tell me what i hav to do to get it working correctly because i'd really like to move my music off of my dad's comp. btw, my system specs are in the sig

Answer:250GB HD showing up as 127GB!?

What kind of hard drive do you have? I don't see the sig on the screen so if its there i just can't see it. Also what operating system are you running??

I appologize in advance for the long read.

This computer came with only a 10GB Seagate drive. It has less than 300MB left of unused memory, so I tried installing a 250GB Maxtor. It is only recognized as 30GB in the BIOS. I don't understand this because I have WinXP SP2 and LBA is enabled in the BIOS -
Not only that, but I have another 300GB Seagate that I want to install as a slave (I had previously installed this one as a slave to the 10GB but had the same problem with only 64GB being recognized.
I don't understand why my BIOS isn't recognizing it at it's full capacity since I have the latest version of BIOS and LBA is indeed enabled (I thought SP2 was supposed to correct this problem).

My hope is that someone out there can walk me through this step by step (from erasing the disk to installation) because I've been working on this thing all day long and nothing I've tried seems to work. The 10GB drive has to go. I want to install the 250GB drive as my master, copy the 10GB drive to it (I have Casper XP 3.0 for this purpose), and then install the 300GB drive ... Read more

Answer:250GB drive is seen only as 30GB

Did the Maxtor not come with a setup disc .....?
When you go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disc management and right click on the "free" space of that drive what options do you get?

I have a 250GB Maxtor Hard Drive that I decided to convert to an external drive when I got my new Dell (bad idea). It worked great for about a month, then one day I get an 'ambulance-like' beeping alarm from the external. I'm relatively certain its telling me the hard drive is dead... most likely from insufficient cooling in the cheap external HD case I bought. But, I dont have any experience with hard drive alarms so i thought I'd ask. Does this alarm mean this drive is dead for good?

Answer:Dead 250GB Maxtor HD... I think

I would check your documentation from your ext. drive case and see what the sound meant. You can always plug it into an IDE cable to check it.

Would there be any conflict with this unit and W7.

I looked at this unit and it appears to me that it would be ideal for my laptop. I need about 120gb for backup of my C & D drives. I'm not sure if this unit is the best and find no place to compare it to other comparable products on the market.

If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

Thanks

Answer:Seagate Replica 250gb with W7

If your only use is for disaster recovery, then this drive will do the job...That being said, I would recommend the purchase a large external drive that can also be used for storing individual files/folders...

Hey this is my first post to this site so please feel free to nag more info out of me if i dont put enough onMy XP Pro recently got a 250 gb Seagate internal hard drive installed into it, yet it takes around 10 to 15 minutes for it to boot.So i decided in the end to have it as a secondary hard drive and have my 80 gb hard drive as a primary. yet when my 250 gb reaches over 91.9 gb full, it will not load anymore data, instead crash and say that i have lost all data that i was moving. If anyone knows whats wrong or even advice, it will be well appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Boot Problem XP PRO 250GB

How is the drive formatted ? ?NTFS/FAT32 ?2 things you can check: First in device manager find the IDE controller and then the drive andd right clik it and select Properties...Report back what mode it is in. If it's PIO mode this will account for the extreme slowness.2nd DLoad and run Seatools diagnostics on that drive to determine if it's healthy or not.The file is used to create a bootable floppy/CD so you can run it even if Windows won't run.Report back with your findings...

Hey. I got a 250 gb western digital HD (WDC WD2500JB-00REA0) this started about a week ago, i keep hearing the drive stop like being cut from power and then powering up again,i had my computer on for a couple of weeks before this started could this anyhow affected it. I also tested it with SpeedFan S.M.A.R.T function and it gave me this warning - "NOTE : your hard disk Power On Hours Count attribute current value (96) is below the normal range (97 - 100) reported for your specific hard disk model. Basically your hard disk was powered on for more than the maximum time the average user did. This means that either all of the reports collected are from hard disks that were not powered on for too long (this is realistic for recent models) or that your hard disk is becoming old. Usually this is not considered as a pre-failure advisory, but you should check whether you want to replace the hardware or keep an eye on its performances over time."
Thanks.
