Preferred Solution: Hoax sofware installed, computer generally slow, internet connection slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

Over the last few months the wireless performance of this laptop has dropped like a rock.I have a 100mb connection, yet wirelessly this laptop maxes out at abour 10 at any time. Wired it is more than ok.The other laptop we have is perfectly fine as well as the other 2 PCs we have connected, so I'm 99.9999999% certain that this is an issue with the wireless card in this machine. What options do I have to potentially remmedy this situation?Wired isn't one for the forseeable future since we don't want even more cables running all over the place. I have attempted a clean reinstall of the OS and all drivers to eliminate a software issue as well. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Answer:z585 wifi dropping connection and generally slow perfomance

OK, id like to help but i need more information, OS version, wireless card, router u connecting to (is it 100mb to the router or ur internet speed, what do u use to determine your limit to 10?) quick recommendations tho, try drivers from the original manufacturer and also from lenovo.

Sorry if this is long, but I want to be as detailed as I can in hopes of getting good suggestions.

I've got quite a nice computer, but it runs far slower than it should.  I don't do anything that is processor intensive like gaming or photoshop or anything like that.

I am a freelance writer and 95% of what I do is write and research.

What I have open on my computer:
*****************************************************************************************
Generally I have a bunch of browser windows open.  One which is Google Chrome with 10-15 tabs open with things like gMail, eLance, some forums, a google docs spreadsheet, facebook and some random sites I'm using for research.

I then also have Firefox open with Pandora on and another gmail account.

In addition I have AIM, Skype, TeamViewer, iTunes and several open office writer documents open (open office is a free, open source version of Microsoft office if you didn't know).

I also have the free version of Maleware Anti-Malware.  I've run scans and everything seems clean.

Answer:Computer Generally Slow

Does the computer run fine after you shut it down and restart it, then become slower as the day goes on?

Based on just the number of windows, documents and programs you generally have open, it's only natural for your computer to begin running slow after a while, even with the 12GB of system memory installed. When you've got that many applications and services running on a computer all day, eventually your virtual memory and your system memory are going to become full, and this will cause the problems you are experiencing. Rebooting will clear the memory, but once the PC runs again for a while with all those programs open and running, the problem will return.

My advice is to close out programs, tabs and documents you aren't using, and be sure to shut down the PC from time to time. If the problem persists when you have a minimal number of instances open and running, then I would suggest running some diagnostics. But for now, I'd say there's probably nothing really wrong with the machine, you're just working the system and virtual memory too hard.

The story: We just switched our service over to Time Warner's RoadRunner cable Internet from AT&T's U-Verse DSL (was supposedly 6 MB/s). We signed up for and will be paying for Time Warner's fastest service, which is supposedly 15 MB/s.

I tested it with speedtest.net the first day, running no applications or anything, and the thing topped out at 6 MB/s. After hours of technical support, they came out and replaced their Motorola Surfboard modem with a Scientific Atlanta modem using our own brand new Belkin N router. The connection still only gets 5 MB/s.

The technician himself tried it and only got 7 MB/s, explaining that since we live in an apartment building with "kids downloading MP3s and movies" this is to be expected.

Still, why advertise 15 MB/s if you can't deliver? Additionally, should we downgrade our service and then get less MB/s than that connection's advertised speed?

i was wondering if anybody had some ideas on how to speed up this computer of mine
i've tried all the classic spyware and virus scans, registry scans
i even upgraded the RAM from 512mb up to 2gb, which provided no improvement whatsoever
the cpu just seems to have trouble handling even the simplest tasks, theres no evident process or program hogging up the cpu time... its just slow
its a 3.06 ghz cpu, so i'd be expecting a bit more bang for my buck
heres a hijackthis log if it's any help

any ideas would be muchly appreciated
cheers

My computer has been running like garbage for a couple weeks now. it is slow as if it were on dial up. i also started getting a pop up a week ago or so that kept saying "lame codec" and some other stuff. but i think i finally got rid of it. finally, i now have no audio device according to what it says when i check in the control panel. this seemed to coincide with the lame codec popup that i got. it is really frustrating. anyway, i use a windows xp on a sony vaio and here is the hijack this.

Please help - I feel like I'm going in circles, and I will appreciate all help given.

About 3 months ago, I had a problem with Arcade Yum creating crazy popups, and I came here and someone helped me get rid of it.  In that process, he told me to download Avast, so I did.  It was downloaded for a trial period which just ran out in this last week.

About 3 weeks or a month ago, my laptop started slowing down, freezing and just generally being a pain where I couldn't navigate AT ALL!  It is constant and the fan in this laptop is constantly running.  I don't know much about all this stuff, but it feels like there are a whole set of other programs running in the background that my laptop can't keep up with.

I asked for help again, and this is the thread:      http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/550162/ugh-im-still-infected-i-need-help-again/page-2

The last entry from Broni tells me to do the DDS Logs and post a new topic here.  As soon as I started those steps, I got an error message telling me:  Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow This File To Be Downloaded

It hit me that maybe it's this Avast thing I downloaded awhile back.  I tried to uninstall, but it doesn't show up on my list of installed programs.  I googled it and tried to do the AvastClear removal tool, but I got the same message as above:  Your Current Security Settings ...Blah Blah... Answer:Is Avast Making My Computer Slow, Freeze Up & Generally Be A Pain?!

Today, I've been getting messages constantly (even though I'm not doing anything and certainly not downloading anything) that say: Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow This File To Be Downloaded   The message will just randomly pop up on the screen when I'm not even at the laptop!  There were two specific times when it popped up that I was doing something ... at one point, I tried to log on to Facebook, and it gave me that message.  Another time, I tried to open a picture in an email, and that message came up.

Not only has that been going on all day, but Avast has decided to go crazy ... during this last hour, it has given me no less than 10 popup warnings that certain websites are threats.  This was all going on while we were eating dinner - no one was at the computer navigating.  It was almost like someone somewhere was using my computer, and I couldn't see it, but I could see the warnings that Avast was giving me about the websites they were going to.

I did an MBAM scan again today and here is the log:

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Hello

I'm posting this topic on behalf of my mother as its her laptop that has the problem, basically the other day she noticed that some strange programs had been allowed full trusted network access through Kasperskys firewall which my mother didn't allow now i would usually tell you what the programs are called but there in Chinese/Japanese writing and don't have any logo/icon. I've asked her if she has recently installed any new software or programs which she says she hasn't and upon looking at her laptop i can confirm she hasn't. Also the laptop is running very slow/laggy it takes about 10mins maybe more for it to fully load up once you have logged in if you try to do anything like open a program etc before then the system just hangs and lags for ages and the hard drive sounds like its constantly in use and the light is always flashing on and off even when there is no programs running on the machine.

I have run MBAM which found nothing i also ran aswMBR which did find a suspicious file but after it found it the program froze and i wasn't able to do anything with it apart from save the log ;) so if you want to have a look at the log let me know and i shall upload it,after aswMBR froze i managed to close it and run TDSS killer but that didn't find anything i also tried hitman pro but that just found tracking cookies. I also have a screen shot of the strange programs that have been allowed access so yet again if you would like to see that j... Read more

Appears you have some Backdoor /Rootkit infection..I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet as much as possible other than for cleaning. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.I think we should get a deeper look. Please follow this Preparation Guide and post in a new topic. Let me know if all went well.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hi, I am attempting to help my sister figure out what is wrong with her computer. Being her computer, I have very little details about when this started happening, possibilities for why or anything like that. What I know at this point is that it does not connect to the internet in the house, while other devices have no issues at all. I also know that the computer runs extremely slow (maybe 2-3 minutes to load something as simple as the volume control panel.) Her machine is a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop running Windows Vista, and utilizes a wifi hotspot from Sprint as her internet. I have run AVG Virus scans in safe mode several times but I don't believe her virus definitions are updated due to lack of internet connection. Any help would be appreciated as to finding the issue. Thank You in advance.

Answer:No Internet Connection/Slow Computer

Some Fake AV's change the connection setting to proxy. If you haven't already checked, go to tools>internet options>connections>LAN settings and make certain that use proxy is unchecked.

If you have a flash drive, you could try the Superantispyware portable version or the Emsisoft formerly A-Squared. Download onto the flash, plug into a USB port and scan.

Hello I have a HP w1907v with a slow internet.

Here are my computer details:

OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 64 bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) 8450 Triple-Core Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 2 Stepping 3
Processor Count: 3
RAM: 4093 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS, 512 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 465351 MB, Free - 161454 MB; D: Total - 11585 MB, Free - 1075 MB;
Motherboard: OEM_MB, NARRA3
Antivirus: Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Disabled

I go on Command Prompt and type in 'ping <my ip> -t' and my ping is quite low. However when I go to something like YouTube, my ping goes super high! It jumps up to 1000. Also when I go on any website at all, my ping goes super high. It happens mainly on websites which have flash on it. I have a Belkin F6D4050 Enhanced Wireless USB Adapter. I thought it was the USB but it wasn't, because when I put the USB into another computer, the internet was fine. The ping didn't skyrocket or anything. It was constantly low. I don't think it's my modem because it's quite near me. So what could the problem be?

Answer:Slow Internet Connection on a Computer

Have you tried defragmenting your computer? Sometimes after you've been on the web deleted or downloaded files it creates not just one file but several. This you can fix by defragmenting. Defragmenting takes those files and puts them back together therefore letting your computer run faster.
Go to start, All programs, Accessories, System tools, Disc defragment. From there Click defrag and depending on the fragments it will take 30 min to and hour. Also try disc clean up.

I have a couple of desktop computers connected to the same router (all of them wired) one of them started to have problems a couple of days ago, the connection was painfully slow but i noticed when i searched something in Google I got spam ads, so I found malaware and got rid of it.

The computer is clean now but i still have the problem with the connection to the internet while the other computers average a connection of 84Mps DL and 35Mps UL, this other one has 0.23Mps DL and 0.23Mps UL.

I repaired/re-installed the network adapter drivers and that helped put the computer back to 84-35 speeds; however, every time the computer is rebooted The slow connection reappears.

Any of you guys have any idea of what is going on???

I can leave the computer in standby for now I guess because re-installing driver every time is not going to cut it.

MOBO: Gigabyte Z77X-UP4 TH
Network adapter: Realtek RTL8168/5111

Thank you

Answer:Slow internet connection in one computer only.

Hi,

This type of issue could occur due to IP conflict. As you mentioned that all the PCs are connected via wire. Try to run the affected PC via Wifi (If that is available on your PC and router). Else, try to run the affected PC without assigning IP to it. Change the setting to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Keep us posted.

I'm on my girlfriend's computer, trying to figure out what's wrong with mine. About a month ago one of my internet browser's stopped working, so I just switched to another one, then that stopped, so I switched to another one, and then that stopped, so I switched to another...Finally, none of them are working and now it's saying that between my computer and the wireless there is limited access, and between the wireless and the Internet, there's a red X, so no network access. My girlfriend's computer connects to the internet, however, as do two other tablet devices we have, so I'm assuming my computer has some sort of virus. It would be very hard for me to transfer logs back and forth on to this site, like we did when we cleaned up this computer(my girlfriend's) on this website, so I'm not really sure how to go about doing this, other than asking for some links to programs that I can move to my computer that will get my internet working again so I can go through the process of all the other programs and the logs that will clean up everything. Or maybe there's some basic clean up programs I should run first? Not sure, help please! Thanks.
Mike

Let me preface this question by saying we have a one-year-old Acer (4 GB ram, 3.10 Ghz processor) hooked up to our Uverse router box (is that what it's called - a router?), and the internet speed is FAST.

We have a second older computer (Dell Dimension 4500S, 1 GB ram, 1.8 GHz processor), hooked up to this same router box via a Cat5 cable. BUT, the internet connection speed is SLOW. Why?

Now, I know that 1 GB RAM should be sufficient, right?

I've ran all the recommend scans & have all the recommended security software on this older computer, and I'm 99.99% sure that there is no malware or virus on this computer.

When we don't have the internet open, the computer runs really fast...it's a good computer....just the internet is slow. Is it something with the computer, or could it be a bad or too long cat5 cable? We tried both a 50 foot and a 30 foot cable, and there was no difference in speed. Could it be a low quality cable?

Answer:Slow internet connection on 2nd computer

Couple of things you can try.
Using the same cable, are there other ports available on the router that you can hook into?
Have you tried updating the drivers for your network adapter?
If you hook up only the older computer, is the speed the same?
Can you reboot and hit the F8 key to boot into Safe Mode with Networking, is the speed the same?
Have you tried a different browser, for example Firefox instead of IE?
Is your computer all up to date on it's Windows patches?

I have slow/no internet and it seems to be only an issue for my main computer, as the several wireless/wired devices I have have no problem streaming/connecting to the internet.

I have done several scans using SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, Malaware Bytes, and even the Microsoft scanner. I did this both on Normal and Safe Mode.

When I hard wire my computer directly to the modem, I don't seem to have an issue. When I watch videos/stream from a laptop or an iPad, I also don't have an issue.

I have Windows 7 64-bit computer with an ASUS RT-AC66U router and a cable modem. I've tried switching the physical ports on my router, but that doesn't seem to fix the problem.

I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew, and that doesn't seem to work either. Sometimes if I reset my computer, the issue seems to get fixed, but will eventually will be super slow again.

Any ideas on what to do?

Answer:Internet Slow on Computer (Wired Connection)

It seems to happen when another computer or laptop is streaming/playing a game.

My computer has been running very slow and has trouble staying connected to the internet. This started after I followed the advice in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware sticked thread, "Is Your PC Running Slow?" I deleted temporary files and then used Spybot Search & Destroy to get rid of tracking cookies.

As for the internet (wifi), every minute or so, it will look like it's connecting, saying it's "acquiring network address" and then it will reconnect. I don't think it's my modem because the lights all look fine and I can connect without problems using my netbook and my smartphone, also using wifi.

Answer:Computer slow & trouble with internet connection

Do a system restore to a time before you deleted the temp files.

I believe my problems all started when my wife tried to open a video sent to her by a friend on Facebook. My computer is dragging and my internet connection is inconsistent. I'm receiving an SVCHOST.EXE error refrencing "0XFFBADD11". On my wife's sign on there is no internet connection, which I've tried to repair the connection. The internet connection list won't pull up on her sign on. I also keep getting notices from Spybot of registry changes.

So far I've run CCleaner to work on my registry, Desktop Doctor, Comcasts version of McAfee, Spybot, Windows Defender, and AdAware. AdAware is the only one that found anything and I quarantined it. Since then my ability to access the internet has improved on my sign on. I just downloaded HiJackTHis and below is a copy of my results.

Can someone please tell me what my problem is and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks,
Will

My computer is running pretty slow and will not open the internet unless I reboot each time. It may be because of the many processes running in the back ground. Can anyone help me eliminate some of the processes?

I am having a great deal of problems with my computer running slow, cpu maxing out and continuous IE errors and shut downs (of IE). I've attached a hijack log and would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Yesterday I rebooted to safeboot and ran SDFIX, Malwarebytes, ARO, Microsoft Safety Scanner, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and PC_Cleaner_Pro. Basically every cleaning tool I have loaded. Not sure if I'm just running too many things.

My Antivirus tool is McAfee.

I mostly use my computer for email, facebook and facebook games. I have a lot of problems with games either not loading or locking up and shutting down IE all together.

Attached is my hijack log.

We have Verizon LTE home internet.
My husband and I have virtually identical computers with similar wireless cards installed. They are both Dell Optiplex desktops running Windows 10 that was upgraded from Windows 7.
He is getting up to 18.3 mbps download and 6.25 mbps upload.
I am getting only 7.57 mbps download and 5.00 mbps upload.
The router is located 3 rooms away from each computer.
Previously, I had better speed on my computer, but there was an issue with the router and Verizon moved it, necessitating that my husband needed a wireless card for his computer. I proceeded to take the one out of my computer and put it in his and purchased a new one for me.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you.

Hi, Everyone.

Im having trouble keeping internet connection... I will make this as easy to read as possible... and i thank you very much in advance for any help you can give!

I have a 3 month old Sony VAIO pc.

I have norton anti virus, spysweeper, adware SE, hijack this, and crapcleaner.

I update all of these quite often.

About 2 weeks ago i noticed my computer slowing down (right clicking, etc).

Then my internet connection started cutting out every once in a while... I have cable internet from Time Warner (Road Runner)...

The cable light will start blinking rapidly, the data light will completely shutoff... and the power and PC lights stay on... This goes on for about a minute, then i get internet connection back.

This happens about 1-4 times every hour, and gets extremely annoying.

Ive ran all of my spyware, antivirus, crapcleaner programs many times... Ive tried running them in safe mode... ive reset my modem...

I have no idea whats up.

One day while running Norton it picked up a trojan called "Trojan.moo"... but couldnt fix or delete it... Everytime i run norton now, it doesnt show it, but i dont think it ever got fixed. Im wondering if this is why im losing connection?

Sorry for the very long post.

Thank you!

Answer:Losing Internet Connection, Slow Computer

Welcome to MajorGeeks!

I have cable internet also, only by Charter and not Comcast. The problem that you describe sounds like a provider issue. I have ran into this in the past and can't give a good answer for fixing it, although others may! I have always just reset my modem and my switch.

Hi all,
I have 2 computers, a Dell laptop and a Dell Desktop, they are recently new, have been working fine, they both have Vista. Just as of late last night the internet connections have been poor, either not connecting at all or slow. I have AVG 8.0 but it has not found any viruses....any help would be appreciated. thanks,

Answer:Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi Dano.
Are both pc's hardwired or one wireless through your router?
Are both slow at the same time?
Have you tried eliminating the router and hardwiring one pc directly through the modem.(will require a power on reset of the modem)?

Do a speed check
www.speakeasy.net/speedcheck
Any recent hardware/software changes?
Any error msgs ?

Is this cable or DSL?
Knowing some of these things will assist the techs here to delve further into the problem.

Hi. How are you? I am coming here because I'm going to attempt one more time. And then I'm going to call it a lost cause.I have aDell Latitude computer running windows 7. I have Google Chrome as my default browser. It is the easiest to get around in for me, and has tools for all of these popups that are in exitance. I have a question that I doubt has any real good answers, or any answer that is going to help, but I will go ahead and waiste these next few minutes just to see what happens. I LOVE YouTube. But YouTube I think is at the end of its time with me. I now have moved to a place that has a slightly slower speed and It is using Windstream. I now have PROFOUND problems browsing youtube because it is PROFOUNDLY SLOW.

REALLL slow. I have a question. Does anybody know of something in existance that would make it faster? I've checked my computer for bugs. NONE to be found. Cleaned it up. I've got ReadyBoost Activated, and I'm using chrome. Any suggestions or tools that would allow me to browse Youtube, and do all of the functions/features involved in YouTube like the PlayList Abilities such as AutoPlay and Auto-Repeat? ANYTHING? Oh, I Defragmented it too. And deleted other programs that I wanted to delete. Still profoundly slow. Internet Explorer isn't happening. BAAAAAD IDEA. Tried it. We're talking about Taking the definition of Profoundly slow to new and dangerous levels. Thank you very much. Sorry for waisting your time, and God Bless.

My computer is the only one in the house hard wired to the router. After we had to buy a new router, I started having trouble. The biggest problem is that my internet connection keeps getting dropped and it is impossible to stay connected to attach pictures, watch videos, or listen to music. As time has gone on my start up time has increased, but this could be because I have trouble downloading updates. I have run the malware removal programs, but I can only find 2 of the logs. Help!

Answer:Computer loads slow and drops internet connection.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I need the logs from Hitman Pro and Malwarebytes. Per your other logs in MGlogs.zip, it seems you did not run the scans and save the logs per the instructions. Please run these scans and attach the logs. Follow the instructions given for running them in Step 2 of the below link

Windows XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure

Your problems may not be due to malware. It may just be due to the below
Code:
Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 121.77 MB
which shows that you do not have enough memory to properly run Windows XP SP3 and everything else you are running. You need 6 times this which is 3 GB or at a minimum at least 2 GB

Hi,

Windows XP Home
Dell DIM4400
Windows XP Home SP2
Verizon DSL
Firefox 1.5.0.12
IE6 (uninstalled IE7 last year)

Spybot....NO problems found (all Green)
Ad-Aware....found one MRU...deleted it.
AVG AV Scan....NO virus infection found.

I noticed last evening while cruising around the net that pages were loading slower than normal (up until then have had NO problem with my DSL).
This morning there was a point where I could NOT make an internet connection at all.

I called Verizon a couple of times and at one point was told I might need a new NIC card (although the "more knowledgeable" tech I just spoke with said my NIC card is ok and she thinks something else (Software?) might be the cause.)

I shut the computer down and this afternoon started it up again and had a connection but, a very slow connection.
Normally my Verizon DSL gives me around 1650Kb/s Download and 550Kb/s Upload.
At last check I'm getting less than half those speeds.

It's been a LONG time since I've had someone check my HJT...
could you see if there's anything in there that could be causing a problem while I continue with other Troubleshooting?

Thank you

Hello All,

I'm new here and desperately in need of help. I'm no expert, but usually can figure out my own problems up until now.
I was tricked into clicking on a facebook link, and since then, my internet connection has been extremely slow.

I am running windows XP pro, SP3, with firefox 3.0.3, zone alarm free version.
All windows security patches for windows XP are currently up to date.

I have followed all the guidelines here and have tried everything I can do before posting.
I am using bitdefender antivirus, and definitions were updated -- scan showed no problems.
I have cleaned out everything using ccleaner, my drives are all defragmented, and have tried Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.30, spybot search & destroy, spyeraser, and scanned with mcaffe stinger with no luck--nothing found.

superantispyware did find a few things listed below, but now scans as clean, even though the problem still exists.

Answer:Internet connection suddenly slow on brand new computer

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute filesI would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallHowever, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hi
I have got AOL platinum 2mb broadband and have had for about 6 months and all has owrked perfectly. I started to notice my internet speed was going from 400-500 kbs, but now it is going at 10-20kbs on ALL websites! I have tried to reboot my modem, i contacted AOL who gave me numerous things which didn't help, and i have waited for a while to see if it may have been just a lapse on AOL for the day

I also play many online games such as Call of Duty and Counter Strike; i got so annoyed with connection breaks and my 999 ping!

I run windows xp sp2, aol 9.0 and will post a HJT log just incase, but i think im spyware free. I only have 8% of HD space left, will that make any difference. I have a Binatone ASDL 2000 modem, and a Belkin router.

My computer runs very slow and I notice that on my computer properties it say I have 37.2BGB and 31.2used with 6.04free. My question is would this cause my computer to run slow. I don't know where the ram is going because I don't download. I just surf the web and play games online. I do have alot of $KB---$, KB--- files that I was told are log files. Can I safely delete this files now. I did a highjackthis on my computer and received help deleting programs and files that where not needed. But I was not sure if they said it was ok to safely delete this files as well. Because i do have alot of them. My computer is Toshiba Laptop Intel(R)Celeron(R)M 2002 Service pack 3 processor 1.60GHz, 504MB or RAM. I know I have asked alot but I am very frustrated not knowing what or how to fix this.

Hi!
I have been having a major issue with my internet.

I will try to provide as much information as possible.

First of all:
-I have cable internet, my ISP is Charter
-I have 2 Computers. 1 Laptop and 1 Desktop. And i have an old desktop computer.

Tech Specs.>

Laptop:XPS M1530, customized at www.dell.com than 2 months old
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, 2 Duo, T8300 @ 2.4GHz
-RAM/Memory:4GB
-64 bit operating system
-500GB of Hardrive space

Desktop(new): Studio XPS 435MT
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, i7 920 @2.67 GHz
-RAM/Memory:6GB
-64 bit operating system
-1TB of Hardrive Space(1000~GB)

Desktop(old)ell Dimension 8200
-Its OS is Windows XP
-Processor: N/A(i am somewhat unable to use the machine at the moment, thus we purchased new computers...)
-RAM/Memory:256MB
-less than 40GB of Hardrive Space
*Both have McAfee

Ok, so the problem. I am able to connect both the laptop and the desktop(new) to the internet through my modem and what not. However, during web browsing, online gaming(even the simplest of games that only require as little as a dial-up connection.), downloading, and updating. When im browsing the web, Internet Exploror and Mozilla Firefox say that they cannot display the webpage(the typical) Task manager reads out a 100Mbps network speed for "Local Area Connection. It also reads out that the state is "connected". Under Control Panel, in Network and Sharing center it says im am co... Read more

All those O23 entries are legitmate services and nothing to be concerned about. You may be thinking of an older version of Hijack This when you say you have never seen those before because the older versions did not show O23 entries.

I think our computer is stuffed up with conflicting programs and we also have an inexplicably slow internet connection. A while back we had a trojan and my husband downloaded various stuff to get rid of it but now isn't sure what he did. Google chrome hangs very easily, especially when we use Gmail so we are currently using Firefox.

I've put the Hijack file and 2 dds reports below, but the GMER app ran for several hours before crashing so I don't have that. Can try it again tonight - is it usual to take hours?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Just recently started to notice the speed of my connection has greatly slowed down! I am on a desktop PC that is using a linksys wireless USB adapter to connect to my router. I looked at the speed and it was like 18mbps when it used to be like 54mbps. Now my laptop on the other hand if i have it right where i have the same desktop pc connects to the router and receives a speed of 54mbps. Whats going on here? why did my desktop pc suddenly get slower? Its prolly just a coincidence but right after I installed frostwire it seemed like thats when it got slower. (no frostwire isnt running and thats not why it seems like my connection is slower). But there isnt really a way that an application could cause my actual connection speed to slow down is there? The only thing that i can think of is that my linksys wireless usb adapter is going bad or something? does anyone have any ideas, or suggestions on what is going on here??

Hello,Your are dealing with several nasty infections..* Download: HostsXpertUnzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\HostsXpert Start HostsExpert.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK. Then, * Download Combofix to your desktop.Doubleclick combofix.exeFollow the prompts.Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang. When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt. Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible w... Read more

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Alright, so today i replaced my dad's powersupply and got an "Error Loading OS" Message for his system when it previously had XP on it. So i said forget messing with it ill just put vista on it and call it a day.

After putting the vista disk in it seemed to go pretty slow compaired to how it was on mine. But in the end it took about 1hr to 1hr and 1/2 to install completely. After installing it took forever to do the first boot up and after it booted i could not move the mouse more than one direction every 2 minutes or so. The system would apparently freeze or become completely bogged down for no reason.

So, this is a fresh install of Vista on a fairly good machine. Any reason why it is running as though it has the worst specs in the world?

PS: It runs fine in Safe Mode.....

The System configuration is as follows:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64bit
MoBo: Asus P5NSLI
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Graphics Cards: Nvidia 8600GT x2 SLI
Hard Drives: 3 various, one 80, one 200g, one 300g
RAM: 4gigs of corsair or something of the form.. namebrand to say the least

I Cant think of what else might help... it is doing this for NO REASON what so ever that i can find.

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :
3.8 windows experience index
Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor
64 Bit

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.
All virus scan results  find no infections.
Windows updates is activated  and  all latest updates have been installed.... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 computer suddenly slow to get on internet, slow to browse websites etc

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

Hi,
My laptop was recently the victim of some malware/virus and I can't figure out how to fix it. I've tried the suggested steps to clear it from my system, and have tried running a few anti virus programs while in safe mode. The Dr Web scanner indicated that there was some malware in my dell support system files, which I've attempted to delete . In the past few days, I've deleted some files that are supposedly incosequential (ie Dell connect, etc), but now I am wondering if I deleted a file I shouldn't have. I was going via the advice given on some other forums, regards the neccessity of some of these programs.

I have a Dell inspiron e1705 with Windows Vista (32 bit) .

Some of the symptoms of the problem include:
-no wireless intenet availability (says "the adapter is not connected") - never had a problem previously
- very slow with frequent freezes
-I do not see any obvious resource taken up the memory space in the Windows Task Manager log
-Occasionally, some random tmp files have appeared all of a sudden on my desktop.

Hello, alexismyname
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

Hey everyone! I've got a problem and I dont know what the cause may be, or how to attempt to locate it. Issue is that system is being generally slow in almost everything.

Firefox freezes/hangs up(specially when finishing up downloads), file explorer takes up to a min sometimes to open a folder, right click menu takes time to popup, start menu takes several seconds to come up, it takes several minutes to shutdown PC, ect..

Programs I run, such as audio editing, games, ect often hangs up aswell. I run microsoft antivrius, which is far from best, yet it showed PC as clean.. This aint much info, but I doubt I can provide more unless asked about specific details..

I am using Windows7 64bit, Nvidia gtx260 card, 4gb ram, and i5. The hdd the system is on is several years old, about 3-4. Im using Microsoft security essential as antivirus, together with ad-aware.

Thanks for any tips!

Answer:System is being generally slow.

Hi,

Go to start menu and type perfmon /report. It will record your systems performance for 60 seconds. Once it has finished go to File -> Save as.
Then zip the file and upload it to your next post.

Also, What brand and model is your hard drive?

Regards,

Hi everyoneI've had NTL 600k broadband for about 14 months now without any major problems. Recently (in past 2 weeks or so) whenever I open a new IE window, and even sometimes when I just go to a new url from an active window, it just pauses and does nothing for about 30-45 seconds. The cable modem flashes etc (but zonealarm doesn't indicating no data being uploaded / downloaded), and IE status bar sometimes says it is "detecting proxy settings".I've not installed / uninstalled anything in the past while, have successfully defragged, ran AVG with latest signature file etc all to no avail. This is starting to get quite annoying, and I wonder if anyone has any ideas what I could do to get round it?ThanksScott

Answer:IE "pausing" and generally going slow

The NTL cable broadband helpline is at local call rate on the telephone, and the staff are extremely helpful. I have no problems at all at present. 0845 650 1021

Right

I've read through various points on the sight for running slow.

I have an Acer 5000 laptop, running windows XP, SP2.

I mentioned on another thread that after installing Norton anti-virus it's been running slow and i was getting an error message. I can't connect my personal laptop at work so this is from a work machine, but I have access to my laptop. (Here with me)

I've defragged the machine, cleaned up the disc and deleted any old programs. The laptop runs fine when started, so I ran a anti virus scan and Lavasoft Ad-were in safe mode and it picked up on various pieces. My friend at work is now as we speak running another spy ware/ad-ware program taht has picked up on various pits, but I have various processes in the task manager running under my username that i haven't started and Norton anti virus is not running at all.

Another small thing is I keep losing the battery icon from my taskbar and also a server busy/switch to error, but I can't find out what program this relates to, is this an indication of something else?

I think I've seen posts on here where people can upload a 'log' of what's going on etc.

What should I look at next? Should I completely uninstall norton even though it's cost me like ?40.

I just need pointing in the right direction.

Cheers

Hi Krawlspace. If you post a HijackThis log in any other forum it will be moved to this forum. This is the only forum where HijackThis logs can be anaylzed.

Since the log shows no signs of viruses or malware HijackThis will not be of much help in resolving any issues. It is only used for malware analysis and removal. Performance issues are handled by the techs in the XP forum. When posting there, give a detailed description of the issue, what (if anything) has been done to check/verify/resolve it and any other information that would be helpful to the techs. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found, but do not post a HijackThis log in that forum. If you do, it will simply be moved back over to this forum.

Cheers.

Hi All,

I used be pretty good with computers, but it's been a while! I have an ASUS laptop running Windows 7. It's worked great for the last year or so, but the last 6 months it's painfully slow doing anything on the laptop. I've checked a few things listed below, but the computer is still very slow.

Ran Malwarebytes / CC Cleaner - found no major issues
Internet is slow, but network utilization is < 5% and other machines on the same network are running fine
Only two programs installed on the laptop post purchase - AVG, Picasa, and Carbonite (only back-ups at night)
Running internet programs (e.g., IE, FF, Chrome) takes up ~35% of the CPU, even when idle
Ran msconfig and didn't see any odd or irregular programs running at startup.
Plenty of space available on the harddisk

Before I reformat the laptop, wanted to see if there's something else I should check/do? Thanks in advance for any help!

hello,
my old faithful laptop is running pretty slow, and there's way too many things starting at start up.

also sometimes I'll click on a folder, and the screen will go blank or disappear for a minute.

when I shut down I get a message WMS Idle is not responding

on boot up:
HP Digital imaging monitor has encourntered a problem
skype update required
java update available

also, don't need the weather channel either.

Thanks,

You did not mention the version of windows.
Install WinPatrol http://majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html
right click on the tray icon (scotty the watchdog) and select Display Startup Info.
There are 4 buttons at the bottom. For the moment disable the items you don't want starting up.

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please remove P2P (file sharing programs) before I clean your computer. The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. There is a list here: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesfor...php?topic=110.0Following that I will need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

So here's my DDS log and hopefully the problem can be diagnosed, thank you.

Hello, my computer has been extremely slow on boot and my desktop has been hijacked with a message about changing it to a website. I also have a program called "error fix" showing up on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. I've run Malware Bytes twice on the computer with numerous problems found. After running it the second time, I got a message saying I needed to run CHKDSK which I ran. Also, my internet is running very slowly and I just got a message that says "A program on your computer has corrupted your default setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this sietting to your original search provider, Live.Search (search.live.com). Internet will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providors."

Here is my Hijackthis Log, if you need the MBAM logs, please let me know and I will post those as well.

Hi there,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Hey I recently bought a new computer that is much better than my old one in stats but its not acting like it.

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
Intel Dual Core E5200
2.50GHz
2GB RAM

Now it was running ok to begin with but then the internet started having problems. It kept dropping out or fluctuating in speed and nothing seemed to fix it. It didnt happen on my old system it sat nicely at 54MB/s all the time.

Then the rest of the computer started going slow to start up so i got rid of some start up programs and desktop items which didnt seem to do much. And now ive noticed that when songs are playing in itunes they skip seconds every now and then.

Also when i click for programs to come up after i wait till everything is started up properly i have to wait a minute or two before they open. And burning DVDs has doubled in how long it takes.

Any ideas of what could be wrong, ive scanned for viruses using Avira and spyware using SUPERantispyware, ive cleaned registry using Registry easy and removed all unnecesary crap using CCleaner.

It got suggested that my computer was going slow because of AVG8 so i got rid of it and with got Avira but it slowed up again.

It's running very slow even when I try and bring up the internet or just a program in my computer. I get that spinning wheel and sometimes it takes so long my computer just goes to sleep. I'm really about to just uninstall the whole thing. HELP ME PLEASE!

Answer:I installed Windows 10 and every since I installed it my computer has been running very slow. How can I speed it up?

If you did the upgrade through Windows Update, download the media creation tool and create installation media for another PC. (CD or USB stick) Be sure its the same version that you download for hat you are running. For example, Windows 10 Home. Reinstall WIndows 10 with the media you made, when prompted (twice it will ask you) for a Product Key, just skip it and donot enter anything. Once its reinstalled it will self activate from the hardware/digital ID from your upgrade.

We got an old pc recently, and we decided to upgrade it a little so we could use it as our shared computer in the living room. However, it seems it is so very slow, hangs constantly, and nothing I do actually has any impact. It is especially obvious when we try to watch something on youtube, it looks like it has trouble loading everything in time. It is not related to the internet connectivity, I logged in my ipad on the network and it downloads everything smoothly.

specs: 2GB ram, 1TB HDD, windows 7 build 7600 (fresh install), ati radeon hd 3450, intel Celeron 2.8 ghz cpu (single core).

cpu usage while on youtube goes around 60%, spikes to 100% sometimes.

I was doubting if I installed the ati driver, but this seems to be fine (I should mention I only have experience with nvidia cards, so I am unfamiliar with this one).
I already went in the bios to change the cpu host frequency from 100mhz to 300mhz, and this seemed to improve it a little.
As it is a fresh install, I have no clue what is causing this. I have been using an older pc before, only 2.4ghz and 256mb gpu which ran much smoother.

I will install a new case fan this weekend, and redo the cpu thermal compound (I had none when I changed the motherboard, and it might have resulted in a sloppy job), but after that I am at a loss, I have no clue what could be the cause of this general slowness

In short: with these specs, would it be better to run windows xp instead (not really crazy about that possibility... Read more

Answer:pc hanging frequently/generally slow

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

I'm running a very similar setup and I'm afraid 2GB ram doesn't do Windows 7 much justice. Yes, XP would run faster but there may then be other problems, it being an unsupported operating system. Lack of updates which would fill security holes being the worst of your problems if you spend a lot of time browsing.

A good temp file cleaner for your Windows 7 is an essential. I use Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer (TFC).

My motherboard is maxed out at 2GB, is yours?
