Broken link in: Sticky How to Protect yourself from malware!

Question: Broken link in: Sticky How to Protect yourself from malware!

To start let me thank you for putting all these great programs in one easy to download area! Just following this guide has cleaned out several items from my supposedly secure system.

I did find one broken link however and got lost going through the giant comodo forum trying to find another thread with a similar ease of use allure.

This one: Configuring CIS for Maximum Security with ZERO Alerts for Novices

If you could give me an updated link it would be much appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Broken link in: Sticky How to Protect yourself from malware!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Broken link in: Sticky How to Protect yourself from malware!

Thank you for bringing it to our attention. We will see what can be done to fix that issue.

I read the above security advice and decided to download the Javacool Spyware blaster from the link in the sticky. This is the page it took me to http://www.superantispyware.com/index.html I just went ahead and downloaded as advised, started a scan and while it was going on, went to husbands computer to download it on his from the sticky. Thats when I noticed that the page was different from the one I used...blue in colour as opposed to bright and red.
Went back and tried right clicking the sticky link again it went to the superantispywware site and not the Javacool. Tried again and it went to javacool. Of course I am going to uninstall the superantispyware programme and hope it removes cleanly. Will use revo uninstaller.

Do I have a problem or is the problem with the link?

Hello everyone,

I have been running through Rollin Rog's Sticky on Security; bookmarking, downloading,
and printing out those items, and the link to Security Test Sites, listed under Vulnerability
Testing would not work for me.

Is it me(?), a server problem? or is the link dead?

Answer:Solved: In Rollin Rogs Sticky: Vulnerability Testing - Security Test Sites Link Not Working

It doesn't seem to work for me either. It starts loading very slow, then takes me to Cannot find server - the Page Cannot Be Displayed

Question: Sticky Malware

I think I have a case of very stubborn malware. The reason is, that despite many measures I've taken, my computer still behaves badly. The first symptom was that when I started my MacAfee program, instead of the usual central command window I got a large, blank, white window. I ran various free anti malware tools: ESET free online scanner, Malwarebytes, the AV scanners on Trinity rescue disk, Avast Rescue disk scanner. Most found malware despite the fact that the previous AV tools cleaned up what they found. All during this process more symptoms appeared. First two of my three user accounts disappeared. Then the System Event Notification Service stopped and could not be started again. Then Windows Firewall stopped and could not be started again, same with Windows Update. Next my Network disappeared and I could not get on the internet. I tried to create a New Network but could not. I thought MacAfee might be infected so I uninstalled it. However I noticed in the task manager that parts of it will still running. So I got MacAfee?s removal tool, but it gave me the message that I did not have the right permissions to run (even though I was running it in the administrative account where I installed it. Finally I stumbled upon you forum. I followed the instruction in the Malware removal thread and have attached the logs. Malwarebytes found no problems and there seems to have been a problem with MGtools as it did not produce a log. I have attached the other logs

Answer:Sticky Malware

Are you sure MGTools did not produce a MGlogs.zip? Have you done a search for it? Where did you run it from? If it really isn't there then you will have to run it fresh from scratch and let me know what happens, if you have any errors, and if it does indeed include a zipped log for us this time or not...

Ok this is weird. I run Ntl netguard, and Spyware Doctor. A few days ago, SpyDoc refused to auto update. Nothing strange thought I, site must be down.

Well its been four days now. Then I noticed I couldn't connect to Microsoft to do updates either. On further investigation, I found I can't connect to ANY legit malware sites. I have run Spybot, Ntl netguard, Malware Byte's anti malware, and Norton AV, none found anything wrong.

However, I tried setting up a proxy within Firefox, and CAN connect to the sites I couldn't otherwise. (albeit incredibly slowly).

As things stand, I can't update any malware software, and assume my poor PC must have caught something new and nasty.

Please help

Hello, I believe I've been infected with Vundo for a long time now, but haven't noticed it till now with constant slow downs, my hard drive grinding away, crashes and lockups when I try to shutdown. I've turned on Shut down event logging to see what the deal is, nothing so has turned up. I've read your other articles and threads about removing Vundo, I've tried to clean my system as best as I could, but I'd like to see if there is something I'm missing in my log files, thanks in advance!

P4P-800, P4C-2.6GHZ, 1.5GB DDR400, Windows XP Pro (all updated), Java (v6 - update 3), Corporate Symantec Anti-virus, hardware router firewall.Click to expand...

I've used Counterspy, Symantec, SpyBot, and sysinternal tools to find these files already:

Code:

C:\Windows\system32\ssqrpqr.dll multiple registry entires associated with this file
C:\Windows\system32\pmkjk.dll Killbox was able to remove this file
C:\Windows\system32\fmqoaipn.dll
C:\Windows\system32\vwwvw.bak1
C:\Windows\system32\ppgru.bak1
ssqrpqr.dll didn't want to be removed through Safemode or with Killbox software, so I used my BartPE (CD Bootable Linux) to load up, and delete the file no problem from the system. Vundofix.exe I've ran many times and each time no problems are detected. Attached is Combofix log, and HJT log files. Again thanks in advance!

Answer:Sticky Vundo Malware - Did I get it all?

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com!

Running VundoFix does not always remove the infection. It's best to manually remove it, doing it manually confirms you're removing everything.

Please follow the steps below and attach the requested logs.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy Log - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
AVG Antispyware Log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
Bitdefender Log - from step 6

Fiance downloaded rotten torrent 5 days ago and then tried to fix it by downloading the evil spylock, not knowing it was scamware. Since, I've scanned (norton, spybot, kaspersky, panda activescan, spyhunter) and found spylock, spylocked, zlob, trojan js, pettrap, tracker trojan, agentczz, and a few other nasties. My biggest challenge however, is that whatever infection is left, it's restricting my access to certain websites and will not let me run hjt, combofix, windelf kil, and several others. Websites restricted are ones that include the words "sp yware" and "hj this" and "windel fkil," etc- just closes the browser immediately. I was able to run silentrunner and get a log if that helps? I also have the scan from panda activescan, and from smitfraud.

Any help is soooooo much appreciated!

Smitfraud:

Edit by chaslang! Inline log attached.

Answer:sticky malware- restricts hjt and related

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please do not post any logs inline! Read and follow the sticky threads!

You appear to have only run one part of SmitFraudFix. Did you run the actual fix which is option 2.

STEP 2: PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. Ask any questions that you may have before starting.

Please print out or copy these instructions to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. Again, if there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode : Starting your computer in Safe mode

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder of your Desktop, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If it is infected and a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll with the clean file. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does n... Read more

I've got a virus. A rare occasion in itself, but this keeps popping up again and again ( trojan in Windows Trusted Installer exe) despite Avast putting it into quarantine. So it's time to take more drastic measures.

I'm just wondering if those same programs in sticky, that worked in XP, will still be as effective in Windows 7 or 8? Have the programs been updated?

Meanwhile, is there any way I can temporarily disable the Trustedinstaller.exe in Windows/services ?

Answer:Malware Removal programs in sticky?

Just follow the instructions in the Read and Run First sticky for your system. Then attach the requested logs.

Guys: I appreciate all of the info I have found here. I have an old Dell 4300 running XP networked to a newer Vista machine. The older machine started with popups, hijacking and the like in the past few days. I found the sticky with all of the instructions (again, very much appreciated). I followed the instructions and got to the point where I was to run SuperAnti-Spyware. It ran for a few minutes and then I got a windows message that said that a certain pgm had to shutdown (I do not remember the pgm name, but it was a long number like 2922360534.exe). I clicked "DON'T SEND" so it wouldn't report the error and then the machine restarted by itself. This has happened twice and then I just shut the machine down. I'm sure this question is asked a million times and I will apologize in advance. My McAfee is constantly telling me that it has found and removed trojans, I have seen files like freddy43.exe and other suspicious files under the processes tab in task manager. I have also downloaded the suggested pgms (Super AntiSpyware, ComboFix, AntiMalwareByte, etc. and I have run CCleaner). Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Hello, kenlenard.

Any suggestions?Click to expand...

Yes - complete our procedure and attach as many of the requested logs you can.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Hi,

i need help! we have a windows 2003 SBS, running ISA server. everyday, i mean everyday, i notice a download of about 80MB from http://windowsupdatev8.3322.org/. it is really crazy, we have tried everything, blocking in at the domain level, IP ... no way, absolutely, it keeps running and i am not sure how to remove it as there is absolutely no information about this domain name in the net.

Any idea on the steps i can perform to detect and remove this? it is costing us a lot of $$ extra bandwidth every month, and who knows, the server might be vulnerable to any kind of attacks now...

please advise before it starts getting worse.

thanks very much.

Answer:Broken Link

Hi chaunsey,I've moved your topic out of the logs forum since it has nothing to do as of yet with HijackThis.WinPFind is still a work in progress and not meant for release to the general public as of yet. There are some compatibility issues with various operating systems and some features may not work. This tool is meant to be used only when recommended by someone on the HJT Team and under their guidance as they know what to look out for.I'll ask tool creator and BC moderator OldTimer to confirm this.If you are wanting assitance with malware removal, please start another new topic in the logs forum and post a HijackThis log to start out. So i've had a couple of problems with my pc as of late. I'd say it's been going on for alelast a month. I haven't been doing anything different to what i normally do, just browsing the web, most likely had iTunes open and Windows Media Player. I do also download some stuff though...

One problem i have is that the windows i am currently using keep de-selecting (e.g. i have Firefox open and the window will de-select (it doesn't minimize) and i'll have to click on it again to be able to keep scrolling or typing. And the other being random spikes in my cpu which causes my music/video to freeze for a second.

I did a google search before coming here. One site said a good clean/dust out of the hardware should help it, i did that, no change (Although ALOT of dust came out). Another site said it was a background service that might be responsible for the cpu spikes, i disabled that and still no change.

So today i did the READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide.

Note: I downloaded MalwareBytes a few days ago, not from reading this guide but from seeing it recommended elsewhere. It did find a couple of problems and i had the program fix/delete them.

I have uploaded all the logs that are requested.
Please help. If any other information is needed about my sytem please just ask.

Answer:My logs after running the Malware Removal Guide sticky.

I am not seeing any malware.

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

Most of these folders, if not all of them are likely to be empty, if so we can delete them , but we must be sure before doing so. Let's check.

My club's web site www.lmas.org.uk has a problem which I can't figure out:
It has several pages of photos. The other day I added six new photos to the Slope Soaring picture gallery, but five of them won't return properly to the picture selection page after viewing. The photos are displayed as thumbnails on slopePICS.htm, and clicking on each thumbnail takes you to a new page containing the full-size photo. Each of these pages is a clone of all the others, with appropriate references and titles inserted according to which photo they're for; slopea3.htm and slopea4.htm are examples, relating to the third and fourth photo in the top row of thumbnails.
My problem is that whereas slopea3 returns correctly to slopePICS.htm when either the photo itself, or "Back" button are clicked, slopea4 reports a broken link. slopea1 and slopea2 work correctly too, but slope_b1 to _b4 don't.
Needless to say the site works fine on my PC, but fails when viewed from the internet. I've reviewed the code and cannot see where slopea3.htm and slopea4.htm differ -- both of their "Back" buttons have identical code as far as I can see.
So, why should it be reporting a broken link? Any ideas please?

Answer:Oops ... a link is broken

It's to do with the case of the letters in the link. The return page is "SlopePICS.HTM". The links which don't work are pointing at "slopePICS.HTM", with a lower case s. It works on your computer because Windows is not case-sensitive for links. Your website is hosted on a server which uses Linux, which is case-sensitive. It is best to use all lower case characters on pages, folders and extensions within your website (eg "slopepics.htm"). This would prevent this problem.

I normally come here to download TDSSkiller. Only becuase its where I book marked it. We IT people are creatures of habbit. Anyway, I went to download the software on a clients computer to check for the possiblity of a rootkit, and it seems like the link is broken... Using my googlefu, I found that if you would like to download TDSSkiller from Kaspersky you will have to provide some information... like your email. *SIGH*

I have a free program called MRU Blaster. I was checking some of the functions on it last night and ran across something called Broken Links. I ran it on my WIN ME and came up with a list of items ending in .ink. What does this mean? Is it alright to delete them

Answer:Solved: What is a Broken Link

It's actually .lnk not .ink. They are safe to delete, but I've never used MRU Blaster so I have no idea if it will work correctly. My suggestion is to use a program like CCleaner to delete them all rather than your current program.

EDIT: Is it MRU-Blaster from Javacool? If so, then the program is probably safe to use.

Hi,

I searched and found allot of similar problems but not exactly this one and it's driving me crazy. I should mention i have a vista business 64bit.
In the start menu theres the Documents link (top right). I messed around with it long ago and now it doesn't work at all. When i click it nothing happens. When I right-click it i get only 3 options - (Copy,Rename,Properties). When I choose properties from the right click menu I get a blank general properties windows (no file name, no move location, size 0 - like a properties window for a file that doesn't exist)When I run "shell: documents" it doesn't exist. (added space to avoid smiley)I created a folder "Documents" under my profile directory (which exists and works) and it didnt help.My "Personal" shell link also doesn't work.Everything else works (my music, my pictures, etc...)The registry fields for the folder location are correct. Its like theres no way to bring it back!
Anyone knows what I can do?

HELP!
and Thanks of course

UPDATE:
- I tried to do option 2 of the "Move Location" Tutorial here at the site. It failed because after creating a new folder and setting the registry to point to it nothing changed - the folder didnt have a "Location" tab in the properties window.

- What is the difference between "Personal" folder and the "Documents" folder??

Answer:Documents link is broken

I fixed it by combining the "move folder" and "fix folder"
So thank you to anyone who was going to help

In IE tools, safety, is a link to Windows Update; its broken, says it cant find a wuapp.exe file.

For some reason IE drops my log ins as soon as I leave a site. EMails, Win 10 forum, everything. It never used to. I have checked the settings and can find nothing. I do have remove temp files ticked in advanced tab.

Chrome seems fine regarding remembering log ins

Answer:IE Broken Link/Dropping Log Ins

when you selecting the Internet Explorer 11 menu:
Safety-> Windows Update or
Tools->Windows Update

you will get the error dialog box:
That is Windows Update (wuapp.exe) has been removed from the Control Panel and it is now in Windows 10 Setting menu. That is why the link is broken and wuapp.exe has been replaced all together.

The link remains for compatibility with Windows 7 and Windows 8!

I have a buddys computer that I tried to remove the spyware from. It ended up breaking the internet connection (I think). After the removal of almost 1600 pcs. of spyware, and 3 viruses, the puter would only flash the "compac" logo, try to load xp pro, only to start the process all over again. He lost the cd for recovery, then found it. I recovered the system and saved his files. The computer now boots to the "User accounts" screen, but when I click on one of the users, a box pops up and tells me that the install has to be activated by microsoft before any of the users can log on. It says, would you like to activate now. I click yes, the screen says "saving settings"(for user).
I ran the LSP fix, but the internet link is still broken. So, I don't know what to do. I really need someone to walk me through this thing. It is probably something simple. As you can probably tell, I am not a computer guru, by any means. If it will help, my buddy told me to do a complete install and to erase all of the contents of the drive.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I found this site through a Google search, it seems like an amazing resource and a great community. Even though I still haven't fully resolved my laptop issues, I feel like I am learning useful things by following your posts.

My post is a bit long, but I tried to cover everything that seems relevant.

Below is a description of what I think might have caused the issues, description of the issues, what I?ve done so far, and the text logs are attached. Any kind of help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

POSSIBLE CAUSES?:
One or two weeks ago I installed uTorrent and went a little crazy with downloads (MP3?s, TV Series, Programs ? specifically Nero). Windows and Internet Explorer as well as Firefox were updated with the latest patches, Windows firewall was turned on, I was using a wireless router, Windows Defender was running and updated, and AVG Free Edition was also running and updated. The first time I downloaded Nero, errors occurred each time when trying to unzip the file. I think this might have been the bogus file? I downloaded another Nero installation file (shareware?of course) and it installed and worked fine. Next time I used my computer, two issues came up.

ISSUES:
1. Pop-ups when using IE, no pop-ups with Firefox.

2. Windows stop error blue screen started appearing forcing a restart. I have no idea if the two issues are related, but both started around the same time. When I ran all the scans i... Read more

I've been getting the Oops broken link messages when I go to sites for over a month now. When I go back and then click the link again, I can access it.

FYI: A few weeks ago, I was attacked with a trojan/virus that held my computer hostage/ransom -trying to get me to download their antivirus program while not letting me open any other programs. I reran in safemode, found the virus through Eset scanner and removed (or so I thought) but unfortunately, the ransom program was still operating in 'normal mode' and wouldn't let me open any files. Finally, I restored the computer and was fine. A week ago, I reran and found via Eset another different virus/trojan and it removed it (I think).

I noticed that before, during and after these attacks, I have been encountering the Oops broken link message when I go to websites. I don't know if this is related to virus/malware or if this is a different issue.

I recently ran Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search and Destroy, Avira AntiVir, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Eset scanner, Securnia osi scanner, Panda, Windows Defender; updated some unsecure programs, did a disc cleanup/defragmenter. Everything is coming up clean.

Still getting the Oops message. Any ideas?

Thanks, Jen

Many programs have links embedded to allow an internet address to be opened e.g. a clickable button to open Internet Explorer (or other browser) and go to the program writer's site, or a button to look for updates.

I've only just realised after a couple of months with Vista, that these don't work any more!

Any pointers please?

Answer:Program to Internet link broken?

Do links elsewhere still work? For example, if you typed www.vistax64.com into Word, then clicked on it.

Hi everyone, i'm new to this community and i'll help in what i can. As for now my comp is running almost perfect, just a little thing annoys me and that's my question about.

I don't know how or when did my control panel link together with the printers link on my start menu got broken.

I use the classical view for the start menu and i have to click on both links or icons to open those sections. When I do it tells me there is no program asosiated with the file and tells me to create one for it.

Since i couldn't make it work undoing any changes i've done the last time with JV16 Powertools (which i use for reg manteinance) i tried changing the view style of the start menu and I can enter both sections with no problem, also if i stay with the classical view but chhose to have control panel and printers expanded in the start menu i can access those sections with no problems.

Everything works fine but this 2 links on my comp.
I have a AMD 64 3000 with 1GB ram running WIN XP PRO SP3
I use AVG (check with panda online regularly) for viruses, Spybot S&D for spyware, ccleaner for thrash files, perfect disk for defragmenting and used to have your uninstaller to remove software, but now i'm trying revo uninstaller.

I'm most certain that one of my mainteinance software may have deleted the registry string for this action, but I'm not used to put my hands on my register cause it requires quite good knowledge of what you ar doing so you don't leave a mess on your comp. ... Read more

If you change it from Classic start menu to Start Menu and apply, does the CP button then work?

No!

Then right click the Start button, click properties, start menu, Customize, Advanced and make sure CP is selected to show as a link.

Make sure Printers and Faxes box is checked also.

Apply, then change back to Classic.

Good morning.

I'm using Word 2003. I have an index list with each item being hyperlinked to the correct document. All of these links work except one. When I try to open the troublesome link I get the following message: "Cannot open the specified file".

All of these documents are kept in the same folder, the same folder the index is also saved in. I have already tried removing this link and adding it again but no luck. With only this one. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Am alone in being unable to play my WMA files purchased from MSN Music Store? I send a message to the help desk using the pop-up and have been doing so for over 2 weeks. Even allowing for Xmas, I am frustrated at the lack of a reply explaining how to fix the problem. This has led to the realisation that I do not really own these files! Why? Because MSN will only allow me to re-license the tracks a limited number of times (I think it is three). I know they are trying to protect their investiment but this is cruel - when I get my next Desktop PC I doubt I shall be able to play them because of the problem I am now having through no obvious fault of mine. Have we all been duped by the music download providers into renting our music? No wonder the music industry is anxious for us to spend more on legal downloads. Is the problem I have with MSN Musicstore unique? Are customers of other providers affected in a similar way? I have spent nearly 40 on tracks and if I want to hear them again on my PC I may have to spend another 40! Therefore I am returning to buying my music on CDs because I can listen to them anytime and copy them as often as needed to my desktop PC.Maturin

I perhaps should have asked a few minutes ago, if Error Expert was a registry cleaner?
I had bought that last Spring, when I was having trouble and it seemed to help.
However, things are getting worse again. I also do not know if I need RAM. Is it possible
to do anything about freeing up RAM in the computer? I had asked at Best Buy and they
told me to buy a new computer. That is when I bought Error Expert. However, EE seems
to disown a person once you purchase, so I am certain it was not a good thing to do. They
are not the helpers they professed to be!

I did a search and found outlook express in program files but how do I reconnect the link? and why did it do this?

I have a wireless laptop with a Virgin media modem and a Belkin 54g wireless router. I use internet explorer as my web browser and all has been working fine for the 2 years I have been using it. Then a couple of months ago I started having problems viewing certain websites. For some of my favourites that I have been viewing fine I was getting a Google toolbar page with "DNS error - cannot find server" at the top right of the screen and "oops! this link appears broken". It then has the suggestion of "view cached copy of page from google".

My laptop shows that the wireless network is connected, with excellent signal strength and I can always see certain other websites, such as the google home page and I can log on to my googlemail.

I have recently installed Virgin Media's PCGuard which I was hoping was going to cure the problem and they also sent me a replacement modem. But the problem remains.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

"Oops! This link appears broken.DNS error occurred. Server cannot be found."This comes up on almost everything I try to go to now! I have no clue what to do, at times refreshing works, sometimes shutting down and restarting works but for the most part is doesn't. In particular a site, iscribble.net, refuses to load. This constant "Oops, this link appears broken or cannot be found" is driving me insane. Is there anything that can be done?I'd appreciate all the help I can get!My running system:HP LaptopLocal Dial-up Connectionand Windows 7 of courseIf anyone has any idea why this error report shows up, please tell me, and if you know how to fix it, I'd really appreciate it!

Answer:Oops! This link appears to be broken!

It could be a number of reasons, but typically, it sounds like your DNS settings are messed up.

have you installed any software that "will help you speed up your browsing" ?

I keep getting Oops this link appears to be broken and yet if someone on a different computer puts in the domain name the web-site comes up for them.
I have cleared the cookies, cache, etc. and that doesn't work either. What can I do as they are my domains and it isn't just one that this is happening on and there is nothing wrong with my web-sites.

Hi,

I've searched through this forum on my issue and have found answers that have been close but not exactly what i'm looking for. So forgive if i just somehow overlooked something that has already been posted.

I am trying to access mutliupload to download some files when i get this message. Every machine i have on this home network will return the 'oops' message. I have both xp and win7 machines w chrome, firefox, and ie all getting this message. This has been recently. I used to be able to access this site w no issue. Have run av, malware checks, restarted machines and modem. What makes me think it is something on the network is, when i vpn into my work network, i can get to the site.

Any thoughts?

On my 3 month old laptop (HP, Win 7 Home Prem, IE8, Norton 360 provided by Comcast) the link to TSF... and **ONLY** the link to TSF... stops working every couple of days and I get a Google error page with message "Oops the link appears to be broken, DNS error, server not found". This happens if I try to access TSF from favorites, history, manual type in, or from search results.

But I know it's not broken because I go right over to another PC (Win 7 Pro, IE8, same Norton w/default settings) and get to TSF just fine. Then a couple days later the link will start working again. Then repeat the cycle...

I went to the command prompt and pinged TSF and it says unable to find host. I also tried ipconfig/flushdns with router reset and the Win 7 Internet link repair wizard. No joy.

Anyone have any ideas? Malware? IE8/Win 7 issue (but then why just one computer?)

Answer:[SOLVED] Link to TSF 'appears to be broken'

Bump.... anybody?? Can any of you TSF folks recommend a place to start?

The laptop in question is my main home general purpose PC. Hate to always have to fire up the desktop to get on TSF.

I often use the built in picture and fax viewer in XP to preview images. When I click the icon to open the image in an image editor ( Ctr + E) I get the 'copy/ move to folder' window every time.I have delved into the registry but have found no way of correcting the association. This is one of those 'minor niggles'..not life threatening but still a bit of a puzzle. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Hi,

I accidently spilt some sticky fluid on my keyboard.
Luckily, I managed to dry it out and its ok, but my O, P, K, L, ;, 0 keys are really sticky undearneath.

I was wondering if it is easy to remove the keys to clean them.

Are they easily removed and put back?

Thanks,
Lisa

Answer:Sticky Keys after sticky fluid has been spilled on Equium A210-1AS

Hi

You can remove only the key caps.

The key caps can be removed easily? you need an thin object and can lever the cap from the bracket.
But do this carefully to ensure that the bracket would not break.

Hi everyone.

I recently had immense fun removing Vundo from my system, and succeeded, thanks to this site! One little thing however which remains is that any mailto: link doesn't work. In either Firefox or IE, when I click a mailto: link, it does nothing for 1 minute (but freezes the program) then opens at least 8 IE windows, none of which have anything inside them or respond to interaction. When I close one, all copies of IE (including the original one, if I was using it) close immediately. Sometimes, I can see an error message along the lines of "The default mail client is not properly configured".

I've done a Detect and Repair on Outlook and made sure that Outlook is set as the mail client in Internet Options - other than that, I'm lost. Any help would be much appreciated!

Recently I put a Playlist together on Windows Media & when I tried to burn it I got the following message:Windows Media Player cannot find the file. The link from the item in the library to its associated digital media file might be broken. To fix the problem, try repairing the link or removing the item from the library.I clicked on the help button that accompanied this message & got this message:To repair a linkDo one of the following:If you deleted or moved the file, replace it to its original location.Find the item in the library or List pane, click the blue icon beside the item, click Browse for this item, and then locate the file.Well, there was no blue icon beside the Playlist, so I have no idea where to go from here.   What I did do was delete Windows Media (2 versions) from the Remove/Add list in Control Panel and then I downloaded a new version of Windows Media 11.  That didn't help.  I still got the same message when I tried to burn my Playlist again.  I've never had a problem with Windows Media Player before and I am quite puzzled as to what would cause the problem to begin with, even affecting a brand new download.  I have neither deleted nor moved any music files.  Wouldn't know how to move them except to drag them into a list to burn.I was also wondering if any of you out there have had any experience with CDBurnerXP Pro 4.2.4. 1351 and if it was a program comparable to Windows Media Player?    ... My sendto has been broken. I had just Bluetooth showing but the folder at C:\Users\***\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo had all the right parts in it. I found removing the Bluetooth worked, but though I have recreated both the folder and the Mail recipient item a number of times the outlook link will not show. On Tuesday I downloaded Registrar Lite from
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download469.html

On Wednesday this was not working for at least two people.
I have tried today and it still fails.

The browser display looks the same as 2 days ago,
there is no 404 message.
but neither does my download manager receive anything.

Is this an accidental breakage that will be fixed ?
Or is it "planned obsolescence" ! ! !

I found a working link on the first reply to
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=190345
This was a link to
http://downloads.bjgarrick.com/files/RegistrarLite.zip

I am curious, that was 9 months ago and that link did NOT point at what you hosted 2 days ago.
Did you actually host this file on Tuesday, or were you simply re-directing to "BigGarrick" ?

Alan

The Favorites link in my Navigation Pane is there, but it does not work. If I click it it goes to a blank folder which is not my favorites folder. I can navigate to my favorites folder through c:\Users\username\Faorites and even place items there. However, for some reason the favorites in the Navigation Pane is not pointing to this location.

I have tried running shell:favorites from the run box and also restarting several times. I also tried a system restore but even the earliest restore was not early enough (this happened shortly after installation.) Right clicking on the favorites link in Navigation Pane and clicking "restore favorite links" does nothing. In fact, clicking anything does nothing. A small red circle with a line through it (the "no smoking" symbol) appears next to my cursor whenever I try to drag items there. I have searched in vain for a fix.

Is there any way to reset this behavior? This is really bothering me because I cannot navigate easily to my desktop folder and have to go a round-about way when saving/opening files. Also, I am using a legitimate copy of Windows 7. Thank you for your help.

Answer:Favorites Link in Navigation Pane Broken

Try going to the link, right click>properties>location. Reset to the proper location.

Mine says c:\Users\richc46\Favorites

If that does not work, set up a new folder for favorites and put that name rather than favorites in the link.

At least, so says windows 7.

The problem: I have a new wireless router (new network, entirely).

I used to get intermittent "network access denied" messages. Now, I get intermittent connectivity loss: "No internet access."

I typically just right click and troubleshoot. The problem is solved and I get the following message: "Problem with wireless adapter or access point."

Once fixed, things go on well for a random time (never more then a day). Then, however, they just fall apart.

It's awfully irritating. What do you think I should do?

Something (Malware ? ?) locked up my PC (Windows XP). I got a pop up message that my PC was infected and click "yes" to buy an AV program. I did not click "Yes", but every program I tried to run came up with the same message. I took it where I bought it and they fixed it by cleaning my hard drive and re-loading my OS. Fortunately, I had BU'd my personal files. They called the problem an "intercept". Norton AV did not catch it. They also loaded "Malwarebytes" for me.

What is the best way to protect for this kind of problem ?

Answer:How to protect against Malware ?

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using... Read more

Make sure you get your system protected from ocurrences of malware problems. Below are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future. I strongly encourage you to do them all. There is no perfect solution for totally preventing malware from getting on your PC, however, these steps will help.

Please do not make the false assumption that this thread is old or out of date based on the date the thread was started ( 10-10-04 21:52 ). Look at the Last Edited date at the bottom of this message as this procedures does evolve with time.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is getting more and more difficult to find real true freeware these days that does not include bundleware, toolbars...etc and junk you just don't want. Make sure you pay attention during installation of anything you download and read license agreements. Be sure to uncheck check boxes for the bundleware and toolbars where you can so that you opt out because the defaults are always to opt in.

1. Visit Windows Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS. For anyone who is not yet running at least Windows 7 (which you really should be running at a minimum if your PC supports it) see the below link before updating. Note: Windows XP is not longer supported by Microsoft and is hence a security risk.

While the Windows 7 firewall is better than what was in previous versions of Windows, it is still very inadequate.

No! MSE is and antivirus and antispyware. So is Avast. You can only have one of them installed.

Microsoft has never updated their info ( from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715 ) for Windows 7 so I'm not sure if everything that is used for Vista would apply.

You can just run this >> Autorun Eater

Have been using Win 7 Ultimate x64 for quite a while but tonight ran into a small problem. I like to keep the titles for links very short and want to rename "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" (I am a registered, paid user) to simply "Malwarebytes". I am listed as an Administrator and I used LockHunter to unlock the file but it still does not allow me to shorten the description. When I shorten the name and hit OK I am told "You'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file" Since I am the administrator on this machine I do not know what to do. Continuing does nothing. Anyone have any suggestions? /* Philip */

Answer:Changing File Decription for link to Malware Bytes Anti-Malware

Not sure but I think Malwarebytes is trying to protect itself.
That is one of the first things a virus would try to do is change the name/link and get it out of the infection way.

I can change the name of the desktop Icon to MBAM.
