Question: Internet painfully slow

Hi there i have a pc wired to a router and a wireless laptop and the internet is painfully slow.I ran both Malware bytes and super anti spyware and they found nothing.My antivirus found some things but when it removed them the problem was still there.I speed tested my internet and the download speed seems to be ok ish but the upload speed is vitrually non existant.I have run the tests from there proper locations but i can't upload the logs so i have had to load them onto a external drive and use a different pc.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

For the last few days my internet has been running painfully slow.Normally it is fast (5mb)Ive ran Spyware Doctor,Spybot,Adaware and the usual infections were found and cleaned.Norton antivirus scan found nothing.Here is my Hijackthis log;

Hi,I moved over to TalkTalk internet about a year ago from Orange Broadband. Since then I have experienced very slow connection, which didn't appear to happen at first but now is almost always occuring.Basically, pages stop loading, for example if I open a YouTube video it stops after loading about 20%. This also happens with downloads. Anything larger than about 3mb and it stops.This isn't just the size of the content though, as it happens on text pages like a google search results page too.I've done some searching on the net and seen many people say it's because of the amount of traffic slowing down connections, but again this isn't the issue. It happens at all times of the day, for example I tried this morning before 7am and couldn't load anything pretty much.Is this likely to be a TalkTalk issue as I never had any problems with my broadband connection when I was on Orange Broadband. Is it worth me looking for a different supplier?Thanks

Last week my internet browsing became painfully slow on my main work computer and I'm at my wits end as to what it could be. Any help is REALLY appreciated.

Every application still runs at top speed with no issues, it is just web browsing. I guess that isn't entirely true since internet dependant programs like Google Earth are slow as well, but it's the "internet" part that is slow on them.

I run CCleaner every day, I have AVG and and AVG PC tuneup both of which I run on a regular basis. I have Spy Bot search and destroy. I have malwarebytes. None of the above are finding any issues. and all are updated

I dont think it's my router. My other computers run the intenet at the same speeds they always have, just not this one. I now have this computer hooked up VIA cable to the router just to make sure it isn't a wireless problem and it still is slow.

I have IE, Opera, Firefox and chrome. All went from very fast to very slow when whatever is wrong went wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have alot of add-ons and tools bars installed on all browsers? if so try uninstalling some of them. Add-ons and toolsbars use extra RAM if using too much this can cause slower page loads.

Hi There,

My mum has just bought this machine home from France adter borrowing it.

I've booted it up and everything was so slow that windows would disappear line by line.

I've carried out maintenance, such as defrag, clear temp folders, deleted old program folders.
Carried out a CC clean.

I've scanned with ESET (this gets stuck around 40%). Bitdefender online was so slow it was incredible but reported nothing.

I have McAfee on the machine but dont really see the point in running it as it doesnt seem to be very good at catching or reporting things.

The maintenance made a small difference to the spead, but not to any great degree.

I've tried running MS maliscious s/w removal tool but again it is so slow I cant complet it.
Tried malware bytes also but no success in finding anything.

I've tried and only thinkg I can think to do now is ask for your help on here.

I am posting this on behalf of a friend who has asked for my help.Running the internet on his computer is painfully slow, and I am looking for a solution.The ISP is freeserve, on the anytime package, and the connection speed averages about 36.0kbps, according to dialup properties, but I find this hard to believe as it takes half of forever to load an internet page.The problem has existed ever since the computer was new, about a year ago.I have already tried running ad-aware, cleaned everything out, still no joy.I have tried updating the modem drivers, also made no difference.There aren't any surplus applications running in the background, and MSN messenger is disabled, as well as everything unnecessary at startup.The computer is running winXP with a creative V9.X Ham fax data modem.I am going to try having the gain on the line turned up tomorrow, but suspect it will make little difference.Can anyone suggest a reason, or a solution to this problem.Thanks in advance for all responses!

I need some help if possible, have had a look a the other posts re. slow computers etc but am finding that my laptop is getting painfully worse and is really affecting my work! I was hoping someone could help/identify the problem? I have even changed everything to basic grey etc where possible.

I have been scratching my head on this problem for a week and I hope someone can help me. I maintain a small network (2 computers) network for a non-profit. At the beginning of July I got a call from one of users and said that he couldn't get email or internet access. When I was able to get onsite I noticed that the network card was not working. They had no lights on it and they were getting an internal IP address (169.x.x.x) instead of a router supplied one (192.168.2.x).

I didn't think much of this. I had a spare NIC at home and took the machine home to work on it. I changed the NIC with the spare one that I had, XP found the driver for it and I was online in a matter of minutes. I ran a Live Update on the Norton programs and everything was working great on my home network.

The following week I brought the computer back and put it in place and when I fired it up I was getting a response when I tried to use the web browser but the pages were taking 20+ minutes to load. It was like the inbound flow of data was constricted to almost nothing. I double-checked all my settings. The new NIC appeared to be working fine. I was not getting any Event viewer errors and I was assigned a DHCP IP address that should have worked just fine. I double checked these settings against the other computer on the network tha... Time for a different NIC. You seem to have eliminated all other possibilities. Must be something about that NIC in that specific environment that is an issue. I normally suspect power grounding issues when I see stuff like this. Remember, your laptop has the "wall wart" transformer, and so is isolated from the A/C power.

Hello,

My wife has a new Lenovo Yoga laptop and I have a Acer Aspire One laptop. We both use the same wifi network (supplied by our landlord, we dont have access to the modem or wireless router). The Acer laptop never has internet issues, it is always loading pages very fast. However, my wifes laptop (lenovo) is incredibly slow, it literally takes 3minutes or more for one page to load. I ran a speed test on both laptops and they both have very similar results, not sure what else to do....any suggestions? Thank you.

A little bit of info:

I have 3 computers, one desktop 2 laptops. All, up until around a week ago worked fine, but suddenly, just one of them has suddenly experienced painfully slow internet!

I have not moved the router, nor have I moved the receiver until after this occured, to try and resolve the problem.

The reciever is sitting ON TOP of the router, so interference could not be the problem, I assume.

We have not moved anything around as far as phones and microwaves etc go.
I have got the wireless router hardwired into mmy computer as well, and I can not tell, because it is so miniscule, but I think that may have made it a tiny bit faster.

I am usuing a WRT350n linksys modem, if thats any help.

The problem does not seem to be the internet speed, but more the time it takes to open a webpage. I could click a link and wait 5 minutes before anything happens, and then suddenly, it will work fine, unless I am watching a video, then the video will go at about dial up speed.

Hi Guys,

I am having issues with my connection speeds. I am running a BT Home Hub software version 6.2.6.H.

On the router config page it tells me that my downstream is 3MB and my upstream 1MB (which is what I'd expect due to the distance from my telephone exchange).

However, my browser is running extremely slowly and pages like Facebook with photo's etc. take an age to load.

I ran an online broadband speed checker and it reckons I am getting around 130kbps downstream and 250kbps upstream.

I am connecting to the router wirelessly however I have tried a wired connection also with the same poor results.

I have tried this from two PC's - one running XP one running Linpus Linux and am getting the same results.

Any help or pointers would be gratefully appreciated!

what version of windows do you have and is this a recient problem or has it always been very slow?are you using a dial up connection? if so and its always very slow then try installing the latest drivers for your modem. try turning of graphics in web pages, this should speed things up but it wont look very nice and some sites may not work very well. in internet explorer click tools/internet options/advanced and untick 'show pictures' 'play anamations in web pages' 'play videos in web pages' boxes.run a check for spyware with adaware or spybot click here click here as this can slow things down further.as above some more info may help a bit.

My computer was lighting fast until a few days ago. I have no clue as to what might have happened. Start up seems ok but slower than normal. Internet speed is pathetic from what is used to be. I ran CC Cleaner, Ad-Aware and Spyware Search and destroy but that didn't help.

Can someone take a quick look at my log and see if anything pops out??

Hello!

Can someone please help me? I am writing this from a dimly-lit Polish internet cafe with a slow
internet connection. I came here because my Toshiba laptop (windows xp) has been running painfully
slowly. My livelihood depends on my computer and internet working!! Apparently I have caught a virus
and/or malware, but I cannot even post a HijackThis report, because my internet connection is too slow,
either on DSL or 3-G, to even download the Hijack This program!!!

The internet speed in this internet cafe is a measly 8 megabytes. It takes too long to download from
this internet cafe.Would someone possibly be willing to send me the latest Hijack Program by email to: [email protected]? That way I could download it from the USB drive and run it on my
computer and post the results here.

Hello everybody, the last couple of weeks my internet download speed has become really slow.
First of all, I cleaned out my cache and everything on Chrome (The browser I am using) so don't tell me to do such a basic thing, please.
Second of all, those are my specs:

Those are speed Im getting from a speedtest:
Download Speed: 501 kbps (62.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 928 kbps (116 KB/sec transfer rate)

I want to write a detailed post but I don't know how and my slow internet speed won't allow me to read any thread basically explaining what I should do in a post.

I remove "Babylon Toolbar", I never knew I installed that thing, must have been a mistake when installing a program.
And now my download speed skyrocket'ed, but I don't think it's quite normal yet so any help will still be appreciated.

My internet connection at home on my laptop has been working absolutely fine at home for quite some time however a few nights ago I was using it and all of a sudden it went down to dial up speed and hasn't recovered properly since. I tried rebooting the router and computer but still no good so I called my ISP. They tested the line their end and said everything seemed to be working fine but then couldn't help me much further because I am using a different router than the one they supplied me with. I have logged into the router and that is showing that the speed should be running at the full speed possible in my area so I tried re-installing the router but still this has not helped. The other night I fixed a load of problems with registry but that hasn't helped either. I use AVG for security and that isn't showing any problems with the laptop. I tried uninstalling Firefox and going back to Explorer but that hasn't help either. Starting to run out of ideas now.

Plug directly into the nic card and bypass the router. See what speeds you get when connected directly to the modem. If you get the expected speeds and you have reset the router and it still doesn't help, the router is probably toast.

For the past 3 weeks I have been in a constant battle with my computer and trying to fix it. I am getting browser misdirects to google-analytics and it is almost impossible to browse any websites other than search engines. I have tested this in multiple browsers with the same results. Also, my download speed in a browser is somewhere in the single digits of Kbps, making the downloading of software incredibly difficult.

Over this period of time, I have run full spans of Kaspersky, Spybot Search and Destroy, MBAM, and Ad Aware. I have also ran Combofix, MBAM and TDSS in safe mode. Several infections have been removed, but it seems to have had no effect.

I have also tried deleting my browser cache's, reinstalling my operation system (Windows 7 Profession 64 bit) by upgrading my existing OS, replacing my existing OS, and again on a new partition. All to no success.

My computer has 2 hard drives and one external. The one hard drive is from my old computer, and I use it as a backup for my old system. The external is essentially storage for movies, music, etc. I have done scans with MBAM on these as well and they are clean.

Lastly, the internet connection method I use is a wired connection that runs through a Cisco Powerline over Ethernet station, which connects to a Linksys router on the floor below. I have not attempted to reset either.

That's basically it. Other PCs on the same network are fine but on this and other networks, this pc is painfully slow and often gives the Hmm, we can't reach this page message.
Same on IE and Edge. Tried setting DNS to google (8.8.8.8) and restarting DNS service.

Run malware scan and windows defender full scan. CPU and memory usage look fine.

Ping of bbc.co.uk sometimes if fine, sometimes several seconds per ping with timeouts

Hello,

I have Windows XP SP 2. This comes with Internet Explorer 6, which worked fine until I installed IE7. IE7 takes about an hour to load. Now, even if I uninstall IE7, IE6 does not work. It is not a spywear or firewall that blocks it and I do not have a virus. I tried to fix the problem by turning off the phishing filter, run it without add-ons. I reseted IE7 back to base level by erasing temporary internet files, cookies, history and password, still it does not work. I have installed Microsoft's critical updates, XP Service Pack 2 and I have the latest version of Flash Player and I tried registry fixes with the Windows Installation Disk.

Is there anybody, an expert who understands this problem with IE7?

I have a very strange problem. I am using a Windows 7 ASUS laptop N61J. I can connect to the internet fine at home and get good speeds at home. However, when I go to work and connect to the wireless there my internet speed is so slow I want to dig out my old dialup modem and start using that. I would fiddle around with the router itself but since it's at work all the people here use it so I don't want to fiddle around with it cause I may have an angry mob after me if mess up.

Everyone else at work seems to have okay internet speeds. I have noticed I am the only one using Win 7 - Professional.

Please help me. I've only started work at this new office a couple of days and if I am to pretend to be doing work I really need the internet.

Are you using homegroup? are there mixed OS'es on the work network? Are you using IPv6?

Can you type ipconfig /all in search and make a snip of the output and upload it to us?

Yesterday I bought a Toshiba C50D-A-133, not the best laptop granted but I was on a tight budget. As the title says when I try to browse the web it takes up to 4 minutes for the page to load if at all. I uninstalled IE and I'm currently using Chrome but it makes no difference unfortunately.
 
- AMD E1-2100 APU
- Windows 8
- 4GB RAM
 
I've tried restarting my router and laptop to no avail, as well as checking my drivers which are all up to date. My older laptop which is from 2006 and probably has 5MB of RAM browses at least 10x faster than the Toshiba. I only really understand the basics of computing, I get a bit lost when it comes to DNS settings and whatnot. Hopefully someone can help me out here, thanks in advance.

If the same problem exists whether the computer is directly connected to the router/ modem or wireless, then your best move
is to return the computer while it is under warranty. But first, uninstall all software that you downloaded and installed.
 
Many free programs and add-ons come with adware. Some could cause your problem...you can check for that. Use the
programs listed below.

I'm hoping someone can help. Sunday morning I did my usual ... checked my email, played Earth 2025, surfed the net, downloaded some stuff, disconnected.

A few hours later I connected again and opened Outlook Express but it wasn't downloading messages. It says "Checking Mail" in the taskbar, however, nothing's downloading even after 10-20 minutes. No time outs, but when I click on "Send/Receive Mail" it's showing the animation. I've actually managed to send email, but only through Internet Explorer using the "File, Send ..." method and I don't know if they got through. I do know they went out though. After this I opened a browser and it took about 3 minutes for Google.com to come up.

Since Sunday the speed has decreased so much that it now takes a min. of 5 minutes to a max. of 15 minutes for a page to load in IE. Hubby's and my computers are networked and he's having the same problem. We're both running XP Home and we have a DSL connection.

I thought the problem may have something to do with a cleanup I did on my registry or something I'd installed recently so I did a system restore back to Friday. No good, still the same!

Having heard about W32.Blaster.worm, I spent about an hour getting to Symantec's page on it and onto the download page for a fix program just in case. Nope, no Blaster! No other viruses for that matter either, according to Norton's 2003.

On my moms laptop, (month old Lenovo B570/i3-3230/4GB/W7), when transferring files to my Crucial Gizmo! 16GB USB Drive, it is pretty much impossible to surf the web. Loading websites take 30-60 seconds, it's ridiculous. Is this normal? Her router is Linksys WRT54G. Router is not connected via USB, in fact the Laptop is connected through ethernet cable (not currently using wireless).

Hi Everyone-

First post for me. A few days ago, I upgraded from Vista Home version on my Dell Inspiron laptop to Windows 7. Since doing the upgrade, Internet Explorer is painfully slow loading websites. I use a Linksys Wireless router with which my laptop previouslly ran well prior to the upgrade. I've also tried the LAN connection with the same results.

Connectivity seems to be fine and I've run the diagnostic which found no problems. I've also disabled all add-ons.

Thoughts?

Hello. In the last 3 or 4 days, my desktop computer running Windows 7 64-Bit has been practically unable to browse internet pages, play online games, or load YouTube videos. I don't know what caused this, and nothing jumps out at me suggesting what might be causing this. Any help would be really appreciated, as I'm going back to school in a few days and I need my desktop to be able to use the internet (though I'm not completely sure it's not my own home network).

Anyway, some information I think is important:
-using RoadRunner service with cable modem and Linksys wireless G router
-I'm connected wirelessly with a TRENDnet wireless N PCI adapter
-the issue is very recent, with no major hardware/software changes to suggest a cause
-I browse with Google Chrome, though I've checked to make sure the issue exists with IE and FireFox
-every so often it regains sufficient connection to load pages at a reasonable speed for about 5 minutes
-my laptop, sitting on the same desk, has a perfectly fine connection (I'm using it to write this)
-very strange: my laptop has 3/5 bars on the network/sharing icon, while my desktop actually has a full 5/5!

Ever since I logged on this afternoon I have been unable to use IE or Avant Browser. Most sites will load, but only after several minutes--a few time out entirely. I've been using Firefox to get around with no such problems. I've run Spybot and AdAware, a full Norton virus scan was run just before I shut down last night. I attempted an IE repair with no improvement.

Good evening,
 
I've been having issues with all browsers since a recent re-install of Win 7 Ultimate.
 
I've never had browsing issues before, and recently installed a new MB & RAM because my adoring nephew decided he wanted to 'fix' my front panel USB sockets with a screwdriver. Bless his cotton socks, and he's still alive but managed to fry everything else.
 
Since my install I've painstakingly re-installed everything from before and sat through a couple of years worth of updates, yet my browsing capability is no where near what it used to be.
 
All graphics, videos, Ads, particularly in Face Book, BBC iPlayer, You Tube and miniclip are very slow to load - even general web page load up take 6-10 seconds to fill all the page images.
 
I've run countless AV's, Spybot, Stopzilla in standard and safe mode - installed firefox tweaks to load pages quicker, checked to make sure my drivers are up to date, but no avail.
 
Please could I call upon your expertise to help me return my browsing enjoyment back to normality?

It takes forever to pull up Interent Explorer... and still everything is very slow in terms of reaction time to my clicking/typing. If I leave my computer on overnight, it takes a few minutes it seems to "warm up" once I try to access an application.

Any suggestions? I know this is a vague description. Thanks.

Hi there,
I am new here. I am also relatively new to Vista. I love XP SP2 but I got vista business with my new tablet (1GB RAM, T7250).
I have a huge problem with vista's explorer. When I use desktop search on XP and select a pdf file, it appears INSTANTLY in the preview - which is btw fully equipped adobe reader, so you can further search the file, copy from it etc.
Now in vista, when I click the file, my computer hangs for about 3 minutes, and then the file appears.
I hope this is not normal. What can be possibly wrong? I updated adobe reader but it didn't help.
So, why is it so slow? This makes the system useless for me.
Also, can I change the appearance of the reader in the preview pane so that it offers full interface, just like in XP?
Can anyone help me, please?

I'm not an expert, but 1GB is not a lot to be running Vista with.
Have you thought of upgrading with more RAM Memory?
I think i saw here recently that Vista can easily take up to 3GB of RAM Memory.

Question: Painfully slow...

I am hoping for some assistance, please. My mum's laptop is seizing up and hanging the longer she uses it. I am sure there are all sorts of rubbish programmes that are causing it to plod. Mum's laptop is a HP G62 intel i3 4GB running Windows 7.

Having tried to follow the instructions, I am stuck with HiJackThis. First of all, it gives an error message that my system has denied access to the Hosts file. If I OK this, it performs the scan but will not save a log file. Any ideas?

My PC (?) has suddenly gone very slow?. when i am on the internet the cursor has a eggtimer by it and the page takes a (long) while to load.Have done obvious things - Virus scan, spybot, adaware, defrag, empty cookies, empty temp files,.It was OK thursday. Over the last few weeks or so I've noticed my pc getting slower and slower until it's almost painful to do anything on it that doesn't take ages not only that my internet keeps disconnecting could they be related because they started happening about the same time.

I am running Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, and am having intermittent slowness issues where the computer comes to a crawling pace while using Outlook, Chrome or IE, any of the 3.  Pages won't load, they time out or just continue to hang.  The Task Manager CPU is low, memory is only using less than 2gigs of the 4gigs available.  Am I infected?  I was told you were the people to help me, so.... Question: painfully slow IE8

Believe it or not but it took my pc to load your website 12 minutes. The slowness started about six hours ago, all of a sudden. My system is running xp pro sp3 with the latest updates. I have mcafee total protection installed since christmas last. I have run a total scan with mcafee also with malwarebytes, and both found no issues. Please see my hjt log file below. I posted this about a week ago with no resolve. My wife is threatening ugly things if I don't get it right(lol). I'm running ME with512 ram, 933 Pentium, about 5G left on a 20G drive, & IE6.
The problem is page loading is very slow. Maybe 1/3 the usual time. Everything else works fine. It's very maddening!
I regularly run Adaware, Spybot, & Norton Anti Virus.
Please, please, please help!

I would receomend definatly checking the page fill size... by default windows 7 sets it as automatically managed by system... if it is set to automatic then that is fine.. also youcould try disabling windows aero theme. also a disk optimizer / defragmenter would be good to run. you have a good video card , processor, and ram. so you just gota get the system to read the files and know were there are from the sounds of it ... also the thing i would recomend before you do anything ... is a check disk.. you go to start , click on my computer and right click ont he C: drive and go to properties. then go to the tools tab and schedule a disk check by checking both check marks .. then a disk check will be scheduled for the next time the machine will restart.

Question: Painfully slow PC

I have my daughters old PC as a second one, it is an emachine with a 1.7 ghz intel celeron processor, 128 mb of ddr, running on XP home with a 40gb HDD.When I got it it was so slow and the HDD was continuously active so I replaced that with another 40gb one I had spare. Initially it was quite quick but since I have installed AVG and Zone alarm it is so slow you can cook and eat a meal whilst waiting for it to do something. It wasn't all that much better before i put Zone alarm on and even disabling it doesnt make much difference.Could this be the processor or would increasing the RAM to a reasonable size do the job??

I am trying to fix this laptop for a buddy of mine and am stuck. When you first start the laptop it act normal, after about 2 minutes it gets very slow. I tried pulling up the process manager and it looked like avg was using all the clock-cycles but after uninstalling avg it is still soing the same thing. I am hoping some one might see some thing in this hijack this log.

I knew I had some malware/spyware problems since everytime I ran my spyware removal, I always had the same issues that were fixed time after time, so yesterday I did a thorough clean of my computer following all instructions within the Read Me First thread. Today, trying to use my computer, it is still EXTREMELY slow. It almost seems like its gotten even slower since I performed the clean yesterday. I dont know if there is still some sort of spyware or malware within my computer or if its something else, but if someone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Just let me know what kind of logs I need to run or post or if there is anything else I can try and I'll do it, but this is really frustrating trying to do anything and having to wait at least a minute everytime I try to open something, click on something, etc. Thanks!

As you have mentioned you read the Read Me First thread, it has the info you need on which logs to post but these below are the ones needed, the read me while will clean up most malware and junk, it doesnt remove all malware, similar to many different malware scanners will find and remove some malware btu doesnt get all of it, which is why many times the logs requested are needed in which one of our experts will look at and post some manual removal instructions for the remaining bits.



When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Hi, i'm quite new to this so please bear with me. For the past 4 years I have been happily connected to broadband via Pipex, the past 18 months or so on a 2mb line. It has all been working fantastically. Suddenly since the very end of Jan, my download speeds have dropped from around 220+kbps to about 30kbps. After speaking to Pipex support (not the best, it has to be said), i was getting nowhere and I eventually threw in the towel and switched to PlusNet (better support and much much cheaper). I still have the terrible connection speeds. In my possession I have three machines, two routers and a modem (obviously not all connected at once), and i've tried varying configurations to rule out hardware at my end. I've spoken to PlusNet who say that as I can get a throughput of over 400kbps there is nothing more they can do to help. My throughput ranges from 150kbps to around 500kbps. I understand that it should be about 1800kbps+ for a 2mb service. I'm literally only a few hundred metres from the exchange. It's really starting to get me down now, as it was working great and now I have the equivalent of a 256k connection. I can get a decent speed if I use the machine in the middle of the night, but really that's not practical. Can anyone suggest a way I could progress this forward?

Have you asked BT or whoever supplies your 'phone service to check the line running into your home? I had a similar problem some time ago, and it turned out to be an old faulty cable. It was replaced with a nice new shiny copper cable, and problem solved.

Computer is painfully slow and no idea how to fix it as what i've tried isn't worked. Scanned with MSE, Malwarebytes, and Super Antispyware. SAS found several things and removed them, but the problem hasn't been corrected. It was the only scanner to actually detect anything. Also, whenever I boot into Windows, I can never click on the start menu. I have to stop explorer.exe from running and reopen it. This process called HelpPane.exe always starts up and the Help window opens up. I did all of these scans from within Safe-Mode and offline. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

I was given fabulous support by ctsnky= thanks again. But loading the page is still a huge pain. for ex, to load this page, I finally had to close and re-open the browser because I just sat and sat. What else could be going on?

Hi, I really hope you can help me out before I look into wiping my computer and starting from scratch.

A few weeks ago I was infected by something or other which placed a big blue infection warning on my desktop and kept offering anti-virus software for download. I had, and still have, AVG free and Malwarebytes. I noticed they hadn't been updating at all - may be my fault or something got in and switched off updates, I don't know. Anyway, I manually updated and ran both. After removing what they found the big blue warning remained and I had no access to change my desktop image - I assumed it was just a residual image. This seemed to resolve itself - until now I'm looking at a half black desktop screen.

Other issues remain when using Google in IE8 - results appear OK, but most of them re-route me to apparantly random sites until, maybe, the 4th time of trying. Right now, my computer is starting up very slowly and web-pages are tending to load very slowly. Since this has seemed to be a progressive slow-down, I thought of restoring but that doesn't seem to function. Also the de-fragment program doesn't work.

These are just the issues I've noticed in general use. I've removed a lot of files - music, photos etc - to free things up a bit but, obviously the problem is bigger. Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

Windows XP, IE7For the past three days the PCA website has suddenly become incredibly slow to load. Quite frequently it's been so slow that it's ground to a halt before fully appearing on my screen, while at other times I've had a strange kind of "typescript" version of the home page. In fact, this is the first time that I've been able to visit the site properly (even though it's still desperately slow) since Wednesday.Has anyone else suffered this? If not, can anyone suggest a solution, please? I don't seem to be having the problem with any other websites.

Not sure where I should be posting this question.

One one machine at my house, loading webpages on either IE or Firefox has become painfully SLOW.

I have a cable modem and am using the linksys wireless router and use dhcp.
the other machines on the network do not have this problem. The computer is becoming useless. Pages will finally load if you have the patience.

Hi there,

I'm helping my mother from a distance and am not completely sure what may be troubling her computer. She's 99.9% computer illiterate so I've minimized the number of programs I've had her download and run so far. It may be coincidental but she downloaded some sort of coupon printer at about the time that she began having problems. She says she uninstalled it but it still shows up on her menu of programs. Her biggest problem is starting up--it takes ages to boot, icons are very slow to show up on the desktop. When she tries to initiate an action like clicking on the start menu, it often takes 3-4 minutes for that action to complete.

I had her run a Panda scan and I don't think she correctly saved the results. Ugh.

I then had her do the hijack this log. That's what I'm attaching. In the meantime...

She ran Spybot and it found:

My six year old Dell Dimension E310 has been working fine for years. It's nothing spectacular but it works well. However, something - I'm thinking an update or a piece of software - has caused it slow down dramatically in the last few weeks after starting up. I have tried everything. I have run rKill, MalwareBytes, removed practically all of the Programs such as Java, iTunes, Adobe Flash, uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Security Essentials, looked through Program File folders, unchecked Java Updater on MSConfig...

I think that's everything, but still it runs so slow I want to stick pins in my eyes. Then, after it has been running for perhaps an hour or so, it picks right up and runs beautifully once more.

That first hour is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

Check that "File Indexing" (often referred to simply as "Indexing") is not enabled.
This can have a significant effect on performance while it's actually running, and is enabled by default on Windows XP. Go here to learn how to disable it properly:
Turn off indexing and speed up Windows XP

I mention indexing because you say that performance improves after about an hour. That hour could well be the length of time it takes for Windows to index your files.

Hi There,
I Have A Computer Running Windows XP, 1.4 Athlon Processor, 512ddr, Which Has Recently Started Running Really Slow, Actually It Took One And A Half Hours To Come On Yesterday And Thirty Five Minutes This Morning.

I Decided That It May Be A Virus So Scanned But Found Nothing, I Also Ran Adaware And Spybot, I Defragged, And Ran Scandisc, Msconfig, And Uninstalled Any Excess Programs, I Also Shut Down A Few Services (Error Reporting, Messenger Etc) But Still It Persisted.

This Morning I Decided To Reformat The HD And Reinstall XP, But Still It Runs Slow..Start Up Takes About 20 Mins And Opening Programs About Three Minutes.

Does Anyone Have Any Ideas?....Could It Be The MB Or Some Other Hardware Problem?

The Only Two Cards Installed Are The Graphics Card, And A Modem.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop with 2GHz Intel T2500 Core Duo processor, 1GB RAM and, nVidia GeForce Go 7800. The OS is Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002 SP2. Instead of this, it is now taking nearly 3 minutes to start . I had latest version of McAfee VirusScan, ZoneAlarm Pro, Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D installed. Those modules were making my laptop more slow (it used to take more than 5 minutes to boot ) Nothing reported any problem (other than some tracking cookies). But Even after I uninstalled all those memory and processing hungry programs, it is still taking so long to boot.

Common problem I guess but PC is dreadfully slow at times. Not talking about internet, just general usage. Symptoms: For example, I click on "Start" then "My Computer" and a blank window opens whilst the little torch icon searches for the contents. Why? Responses from the PC to clicking on buttons is slow. Loading my settings at log on is slow. Logging off is slow. Sometimes after my daughter has been on the PC and logged off correctly, when I try to log on the monitor screen is blank and the light on the monitor flashes ( hibernation ? ). Nothing can be done to resurrect the monitor so we have to switch off and on again. Listening to music on Windows Media Player minimized to the task bar, when I click on restore to full screen, it can take about 20 seconds and another 10 seconds or more before the animated vizualisations run smoothly. My web browsing is painfully slow  Help!
 History:
PC purchased 6 months within the past year for my wife's small company by her partner.  It came with Windows 8 and was upgraded to 8.1.   Had a few programs installed.  Her partner left the company and we now have the PC.  It performs well except web browsing.  Page loads are extremely slow.  I did the Windows 10 upgrade and it only got worse.  I can't find the problem.

AMD E2-2000 APU processor 1.75 GHz
6 gig Ram
64 bit
500 gig HD
AMD Radeon 7430 HD video adapter 
 
To give you my level of expertise....I am fairly good with computers.  Far from an IT tech but I do keep 4 PCs running well.  I have replaced video cards, sound cards, a HD and have a fairly decent home network set up with file sharing and wireless printing.
 
Things I have done:
Scanned the PC with Norton which came on the computer...no viruses or malware found.
Removed Norton from the PC and installed AVG and scanned the computer...no viruses or malware found. 
Installed and ran Malwarebytes...no malware found.
Installed and tried every browser..IE, Chrome, Firefox and all were bad.
Went to AMD site and updated the graphics card driver. 
Check all other drivers, no updates needed.
Did a factory reset (complete) back to Windows 8...installed 181 Windows update...still had browsing problem.  Upgraded to 8.1....still pro... Read more

My computer has been running painfully slow for awhile. Browsers take forever to come up and I often have to end task them because they just freeze up. I could not even run gmer. The first time I tried it froze up after 4hours. The second time I ran it, it took more than 10 hours and then froze when I tried to save.

Hi there,
A couple of months ago we took our computer in to get it reformatted and cleaned because it was running very slowly - taking more than five minutes to start up, any music we played was distorted, programs were slow to open, etc. When we got it back, everything ran beautifully - startup took seconds, programs opened quickly, music played clearly. The repair guy wasn't very clear about what had been wrong. He said we had "a virus" when asked, but wasn't specific about what virus it was.

Anyway, a few weeks after we got it back, it started running slowly again. It now takes well over five minutes to start up, it takes almost 15 seconds for Firefox to load completely, and music plays unevenly. My partner likes to download music from Soulseek and we're thinking that maybe we picked something up that way, but when we run AVG, it doesn't find anything. It says that there's a "change:" C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll.

I tried to follow all the steps in your Five Step process, but was unable to complete the Panda scan. It just stalls, or sometimes I get a generic error message from Panda. Also, we have the Windows Service Pack 2, so I didn't update the operating system. So here's the DSS log. Any help would be most appreciated!!

Hi all
From fist turning my pc on it can take up to 3 mins to get to the password screen ,after iv entered the password it can take up to 5 mins before my desktop opens ( it just stays black), the odd thing is i think all the programs are there and the desktop is open but the screen just stays black for ages.
I'm running vista

Hi.

Im at a dead end on how to fix my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 which is about 5 years old. I have never had any problems with it before until a few weeks ago. My laptop has no battery life unless it is plugged in, and a few weeks ago my niece pulled the wire out the laptop and it so my laptop turned itself off straight away, midway through browsing the internet.

Since then, whenever i try to turn the laptop on, it loads quite fast until windows starts, and then goes reeeeaaalllllyyyyyy slow! It took 2 hours for it to load before i could even press the start button and then spent another 20 minutes thinking about that before it opened it. It looks as though its booting up/loading and therefore it wont let me do anything else.

I know that it was really full, with only 8% space so I ran a defragmentation and clean-up (which took about 6 hours!!) and now its 15% free but this hasnt helped with the problem.

Any help or advice would be really useful...Im not sure if the problem is a windows thing, or something else....i know how to use them, but dont how to fix them!

Since yesterday, surfing the net has become painfully slow. As I type this, the page is still loading and I have Hi speed cable-- so I am spoiled I suppose. Our other household computer is connected to this one and it is also slow..

I ran Adaware and CWShredder and Spybot and cleaned up what was there.

I have updated the drivers.  The touchpad and my external mouse work fine but no matter what I do the pointer is painfully slow except during reboot which is when it works fine.  Once the reboot finishes it is painfully slow.

Hi, have you checked the settings in -control panels- mouse- ultranav. there is a check box for the touchpad -(use as pointing device with advanced features) select this one. I may be stating the obvious but it worked for me when I updated drivers on my T43 and had that problem.  regards.

Hi Guys,

I am hoping someone here is able to help me.

I have reloaded a corporate Windows XP image onto my computer and the computer runs really well. I have put a number of other programs (all legt)on and my computer has got to the stage that it now runs extremely slow. It is to the the point that I would now consider it unusable.

Just as an example it took 5 minutes to get to the stage I am now able to type this message in. When I go into task manager my CPU is maxxing at 100% continuously

I have had a look through the forums and have run MalwareBytes Anti Malware, ATC Cleaner, I have defraged the disk but nothing sems to make any difference. The Anti-virus I have is McAfee and it is updated every day. I haven't even loaded up any dodgy software yet.

I am just hoping that someone is able to help and let me know what is going on and how I can resolve this.

If malware isn't an issue, you may have too many unnecessary processes running at the same time in the background, thus slowing down your computer. You might want to consider changing your antivirus too. McAfee is a real system resource hog!

How much RAM do you have?

My PC is doing my head in! It takes ages to boot, Internet explorer regularly refuses to respond and even Outlook has to wait before opening different folders.

I wish I understood the delay, but I don't. So I'm here. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had previously posted in the malware section, but I had no bites. Perhaps it isn't malware anyway.

The trouble is starting my computer. It can take upwards of 10 minutes at times to work through the initial windows before I reach the login page. I've cleared what caches I know of and I don't think too much starts up with the OS, so are there any tips on how to continue troubleshooting?

Below is my Hijack this log. I tried to run a full Norton scan tonight but it was scanning only one file every second or so. All applications are painfully slow, opening, scrolling, toggling between programs. I did my weekly full system scan on Friday and re-downloaded live updates on Saturday because things seemed a little slow. The scan on Friday found a trojan horse but seemed to quarantine it. I have Windows Live Updates turned on - Bill Gates has full access! Now everything has practically ground to a halt. I saved a system restore last year. I'm wondering if I should just do that, but I've never done it and don't know the implications. Thanks.

Hi everyone. I am desperate so I decided to write. I have a Dell 1545 Inspiron, 4 years old. The first symptom I noticed was that the laptop always hangs when browsing with any browser: mozilla, IE, chrome. One day it just stopped working, so I did a factory restore (my DVD drive doesn't work so I didn't want to reformat without knowing how to boot with disk). For awhile it worked fine but about a month later it started freezing again. I downloaded Chrome and Safari (After the system restore I ran only on IE and Mozilla).
A couple days earlier I noticed that even my wi-fi turned on and off without reason, I lost connection from our router but my friends (whom I live with) said that their connection was wroking just fine. Then, after this I noticed that my laptop just froze everywhere. I tried to open folders, freeze. I just couldn't do anything.
I decided to do a check disk and it didn't even work. I had to do an MS DOS check disk! And it gets stuck at 6%.
I don't think it's a virus because my CPU Usage is very low 1-8%, and I don't see any anomalous processes.
Guys, what do you think? I am so worried that some hardware is busted! I don't want to shell out the dough....

Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Download Autoruns and Autorunsc Unzip it to your desktop and then double click autoruns.exe After the scan is finished then click on File>>>>>>>>>>>Save The default name will be autoruns.arn make sure to save it as Autoruns.txt under the file type option. in other words make sure it is a .txt file instead of .arn Attach the text in your next reply.

I get an error when I try to load it saying it cannot run command. The printer is an HP Photosmart C6180 all in one. It works with 7, but way too slow. It was real fast with XP Home. My system is a Pentium 4, 3.2 gig intel processor, 2 gigs ram, Nvidia Gforce 7200 graphics card. I have 160 gig hard drive. So far all is great except for the printer. Any help would be wonderful. Did you install the XP driver in compatibility mode? When you use an older driver you need to install it in compatibility mode. You do that be right clicking the installer>properties>compatibility>choose XP

The mouse can't even move smoothly, is it supposed to be like this? Heck, now the cursor's invisible except for along the taskbar haha. My $150 hisense chromebook outperforms this thing so intensely, I can't tell if this is defective or what. It doesn't seem defective so much as it just seems like a bad product honestly, there's no flickers or glitches or anything it's just slower than computers I had in the 90's, literally. I don't know if it's windows 10 or not maybe it's still in need of upgrades for slower devices but on my desktop everything happens instantly. I just don't wanna figure out this is defective after the return time's up it really doesn't seem it it just seems like this laptop just shouldn't exist. I wish companies would be honest about how their products ran so I knew if it was my particular device or not.

Answer:Is the R11 supposed to be painfully slow?

Hello all, my first post here, and the way my laptop acts lately, it may be awhile before i'm able to post again, My issue is increasing boot times that seem to get longer by the day, it is common now for me to turn on, set the laptop down and go do something else, come back 20 minutes later, and still not able to do anything yet, especially to get online. I have tried all I know how (not alot), scans, registry utilities, defrag, ect and nothing seems to help. I am running an old corporate edition of symantec - could this be causing problems with my pc tools firewall? I sure need help before I dropkick this machine out the door - I'm a stumped novice, any help is appreciated

Let's get some info first:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be
private information to you, just delete from the pasted information.

I would not use any registry utilities right now.

Are you able to determine what version of Symantec stuff you have and do you know how to temporarily disable it to see if things improve?

My desktop is eight years old and has only 256mb memory. Until recently XP has worked fine but now it takes fifteen minutes before I can get work started and the hard drive amber light remains on. After this delay it returns to normal. I have noticed that when I manage to open a page (in any program) and then close it the page closes gradually from the top down. After that initial 15 minutes everything works OK. I have run defrag and right-clicking on the C: drive in My Computer, Properties, Tools, leads me to Error checking (which it does before Windows starts the next time, and finds no errors). Also I have not added any software or hardware lately so I cannot imagine what is going on).
I know the memory is small but it normally is not a problem. Any ideas please on where else to look.

Hello-

My computer is painfully slow on the internet. The rest of the computer functions are fine. A year ago I reinstalled Win XP, and never reinstalled any antivirus or firewall software on it, in a desperate attempt to make the computer surf faster. I know, dumb. Well, I've finally woken up and installed AVG Antivirus as well as ZoneAlarm for Firewall protection. These were installed today, so any issues are not due to slipping past these programs.

Once again, computer is painfully slow when on the internet. Can somebody please help me save my pc so I don't have to get a new one.......

Hello
I have a 1Tb NAS installed at home. It has an FTP facility. I have recently moved from Virgin Media's 20Mb broadband to the 50Mb broadband, so I have a new router and modem. The Router is a D-Link DIR-615.

I am able to connect to my NAS via FTP from work (which has an industrial ultra high speed internet(95Mbps d/l and 65Mbps Upload on a speed check), but when I try and download stuff, my download rate is less than 10kbps. (ETA for a 700Mb file is 28 hours!)

What gives? Surely with a 50Mb connection at one end and a fast connection at the other I should be getting a reasonable download rate?

I'm wishing I didn't chuck my old Netgear router out as I had no problems with that.
 

Answer:Painfully Slow FTP Access

Could Virgin be throttling your connection because they don't really want you to run FTP servers? Have you tried configuring something like FileZilla server on your computer and connecting to that from work? This will eliminate the NAS as the issue? Did you try to FTP locally from the NAS to a computer on the same router to see if FTP works normally that way?

What's the make and model of the NAS?

I think that my computer has far to much juck on it, and the reason I feel this is that I have just got internet and Im trying to watch things on youtube and the sounds good but the picture is slow and stuttery, also when Im just on the computer normally and not on the internet my programs take far to long to appear.

Computing in genaral is really painful and irratating how can I fix my computer without having to download a clean up program or taking it to a computer shop, there must be some back door program I can run or open up to get to the problem and fix it.

P.s everytime I try to logon to websites Ive been on for years so I know I can trust them this sheald sign appears and intersepts my route to the website and tells me that maybe the certificate is not valied how do make this stop or go away. As anyone reads this can guess I have a lot of problems with my computer can somebody please pleaseeeeee!!!! help me manythanx.

Two weeks ago, one of my computers suddenly began to take forever to load web pages. It does it in both Firefox, and IE so it's not browser-specific. I scanned the comp with AVG, Avast and Ad-Adware (By Lavasoft) and my comp came up clean. I checked the download and upload speeds on the computer and they are perfectly fine for my connection and are unharmed. I also tried a couple TCP optimizers which did not solve the problem.None of the other computers on my network have experienced any problems and I attempted to restore my computer to a prior point, but it would not let me. I don't really want to reformat the comp. Frankly, I can't think of anything else besides port fowarding, but I haven't touched my ports in a while so I can't imagine why it would only start behaving like this.

Answer:Browsing painfully slow.

I ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware, and while Malwarebytes did manage to find a trojanm it still hasn't fixed my problem. My current logfile is this:
