notbook no safe mode, no wireless, no hidden files

Question: notbook no safe mode, no wireless, no hidden files

My notebook is infected with flec006, srosa, bagle, downld, hldrrr, mdelk, etc. Run ComboFix, OTCleanIt, Malwarebytes, SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware, HJT, with no luck. Since I have no wireless connectivity, I can't post the log files. I tried using a USB drive, and as soon as I hooked it to this PC, my AV software poped-up a warning window notifying me of an infection in the drive.
If I can get back to my wireless connectivity, then I can post the logs. Please help.

THANK YOU in advance!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: notbook no safe mode, no wireless, no hidden files

One way or the other, we need to see the logs. Are you saying that our thumb drive is infected or that the av on the thumb drive recognizes the infections on your computer? Do you have a different thumb drive> Can you copy the logs to a cd? We would also need you to run the MGTools and get us the MGLogs.zip.

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I'm not sure if it belongs elsewhere.

I have a file on my computer I am trying to delete, but I am told it needs Administrator privilege. I tried changing it's Ownership, but then I am told I only have permission to view & nothing else.

I have tried this using the Standard account & Admin. account, but neither helps. So I am trying to delete the file in Safe Mode, but the file is in a Hidden folder (ProgramData). How do I navigate to this Hidden folder while in Safe Mode?

Answer:Hidden folder in Safe Mode

controlPanel >>files/folders>>folder view >> Hide/show hidden folders,(apply>OK)
works in normal mode too.

I am guessing everyone who has vista or win7 has noticed the feature missing in safe mode am i right?for those who don't, it is the hidden administrator account that will only show in safe mode so you can do an administrative task if you forgot your administrator password.well vista and win7 doesnt but hopefully this is a solution.I have tuneup utilities on my xp netbook and I have noticed that you can change what accounts show up on the login screen. So i am guessing that if I created an administrator account with no password, i can then hid it which i am guessing will show up in safe mode, am i correct.i am guessing that it is correct, and that it should be the exactly the same steps in vista and win7.for those who are wondering where tuneup gives you the ability to do that,1) if you don't have tuneup installed download the trial from tuneup's websiteclick here2) when its installed, go to start menu, all programs, tuneup utillities folder, all functions, and click tuneup system control, if its a trial you have it will ask you buy now, enter product key, or carry on testing(well something simlar to that anyway), click on keep testing unless you have a key,3) it might have a setup or something at first, but i cant remenber if it did, once in tuneup system control, on the left hand side scroll down to the administration and click on user logon,4)it should now give you an option to use the logon screen or old logon prompt, click on the logon screen one, and click custimize,5)onc... I know this has probably been covered, but after screening ~20 pages of topics I finally decided to post.
Is it safe to delete ALL temp files, even hidden ones - including those for individual clients on a shared PC?
Specifically, I find a ton of files within the documents and settings\client name\local settings\temp folder.
I would like to delete, but I don't want to screw anything up.

Answer:Is It Safe To Remove All Hidden Temp Files?

For the most part, yes, you can delete all of them. But you can't really, because a few are in use. It's OK to leave the ones that are in use there. (As long as they aren't malware!)When I empty my Windows temp folder, for instance, I run into a half-dozen files that are in use. Since they're all highlighted, I hold the control key and uncheck the first one and try again. I keep doing this until all files are deleted. Here's an interesting read on the subject. Pay close attention to the part about the tilde. (~)

Hi All: I've been smashing my head against the wall with this one. I have uninstalled ALL unnecessary applications I could find. Basically all that is left is Windows XP, Drivers and Patches in Add/Remove Programs. I have removed the wireless driver, downloaded a newer one and installed it, still nothing. I have tried it using no Wireless Security on the AP, and also using WPA, and wouldn't work with either in Normal Mode, but worked with both in Safe Mode. I ran a virus and spyware check (before uninstalling Norton), and it came out clean. The weirest thing is, sometimes it does connect and get an IP in Normal Mode, but when I run a ping to my local gateway, half the packets are lost (timeout), and the ones that do reply I see a response time ranging from 2ms to 5000ms with no other traffic. I have no idea what can be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails, I will resort to formatting it and installing WinXP from scratch, since I doubt it's hardware.

I chose to show all the hidden files and folders on my computer, which now shows a lot of files and folders which I don’t recognize and don’t know are safe to delete or not.

Firstly, one of the folders on my desktop has a lot of files with .tmp extensions, probably remnants of Microsoft Word documents that didn’t close properly. These are safe to delete, right?

And in my C:\ drive, I’m unsure about these mystery (previously hidden) folders:
- DIVTOOLS
- MSOCache

What is DIVTOOLS and is it safe to delete? And can I delete the stuff inside MSOCache? There’s also a Notepad file named SAUDIT which seems to carry some technical info about my computer, such as brand name and model. Is that safe to delete?

In C:\APPS, I’m curious about the following visible folders (not hidden): BT, MCA, NIS and RecordNow. MCA refers to McAfee and NIS to Norton Internet Security. If I’m sure I’m never going to use these antivirus programs again, is it safe to delete their folders? I’m also unsure what BT and RecordNow are. BT’s setup.exe program is from Broadcom Corporation. Are BT and RecordNow safe to delete if I don’t use them? What is RecordNow for?

There are two blank Notepad files in my C:\Documents and Settings, named All Users and Default Users. They are each 4kb. Are they safe to delete?

What are PrintHood and NetHood (both in C:\Documents and Settings\Default User)? They&a... Read more

My girlfriend and I bought two notebooks about one year ago. They have the same built in wireless hardware. For some reason, her notebook is freakin fast on internet connection, and mine is mostly slow. I can have both of them running side by side and hers just whoops my butt. I have a netgear wireless router, and it works fine for hers. Any ideas that I could try? All the settings seem to be the same. Thanks a lot!

I have an Dell Inspirion 1200 laptop an I was connecting to the internest perfectly fine one hour and an hour later it didn't work at all. The linksys wireless notebook adapter is getting power, however the links light is no longer flashing. I checked the software and it is installed.

Issues using my wireless router to use the Internet;
The internet Icon in lower right of the task bar, shows small caution, symbol can?t use internet. Reboot the Server for internet, the symbol is clear. Later the caution symbol reappears. This goes on and on for a couple of days. Now I?m getting a star like symbol on the Internet Icon.
Reboot the system, still show star symbol on the icon. Trying to use the Wireless Network Connection, buy clicking on the icon, I get a message saying, ?The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of this Network?. Further use of the Wireless Network Connection, gets a message saying, ?Windows cannot connect to the hidden network?. Troubleshooting the problem, I get the message ?make sure the computer is close to the wireless hookup, the computer is 12? from the main hookup.
Where can I find this hidden Network, if possible?

Answer:Wireless Hidden Files\Folders

Is your SSID hidden on the router?

If so turn it off. It makes your network unsecured. I have also seen this in cases where the router was failing. You could try resetting the router to factory defaults with the button they have on most routers to do so. Then log in and reset up the router. See if the issue persists.

I recently had another trojan/malware attack. It didn't go far before I nipped it (think I got them all), but either they, or the cleanup, left my hidden files system compromised, which is why I'm posting the question here.

In particular, even though I choose the 'display hidden files and folders' option, they still remain hidden. Attached is a pic/s that show an example of this problem + my folder view settings.

Top left: The G:\ drive appears empty.
Top and bottom right: My 'Folder Options -> View' settings.
Bottom left: Pop-up window when I Press Ctrl+A (select all).

This happened to many important folders including 'C:\Windows\System32\drivers', but some of them I got back using command prompt (attrib -h "[folder path]" or something like that).

Also, my wireless network connection has stopped working, or more specifically I cannot start Windows Zero Configuration utility. More on that later (need to recheck it again after I post this).

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Hidden files + wireless network problem

Since it is possible that you could still have malware hiding on your PC, it would be best if you did the below so we can determine what is the root cause of your problem.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

Hi there, any ideas how to reboot in Safe Mode using XP with only a wireless keyboard and mouse???

Your motherboard must support the keyboard. Try setting the USB legacy option in your BIOS (if this is a USB keyboard).

I upgraded to Windows 7 recently glad that the nightmare of Vista was over. Was using my ol' 9800 GT and the internet worked flawlessly for a while. Unfortunately, the VRAM on the card died, and my primary GPU, a GTX 460, is in the process of being RMA'd. So, I bought a spare video card in the meantime: a XFX HD Radeon 4650. After I switched video cards everything went to hell. 90% of the time internet doesn't work at all in normal boot, and when it does, it's like this:

However, the internet quality in safe mode is great:

The wireless adapter on the computer experiencing these problems is a WMP600N. The wireless router is a WRT160N. The modem is an Arris TM402G, and we also use a Vonage VDV21-VD. The ISP is roadrunner. The distance between my access point and I is about 40 feet. There are a couple fish tanks, walls, a television, a nearby microwave, and a lit up christmas tree between me and the router.

Things I have done:

I. Several reformats
II. Ran several tools to completely remove nVidia drivers.
III. Tested a wired connection on this computer, worked fine.
IV. Moved the wireless adapter between PCI ports.
V. Dozens of power resets and hard resets.
VI. Malware scans with multiple searching and removal tools.
VII. Downloading the Ralink 2860 drivers as they are more updated than the WMP600N drivers linksys provides - they share the same chipset.

Hi guys
Is it possible to gain wireless internet access via a usb modem while in safe mode with networking. I have tried to do this with windows xp, vista and 7 with no success. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:wireless access in safe mode?

Thats because the modem drivers are not getting loaded in safe mode. Safe mode is just that, safe mode without the drivers being loaded so that the operating system can be worked on or debugged. I doubt you can force an app to start in safe mode, unless its something required by the OS. Also, it would probably be ill advised to try force a 3rd party service to start in safe mode, there would be dependant services that aren't started as well as other issues.

I would like to know if it is possible to Automatically Enable 'Wireless Networking' at 'Safe Mode' Boot up.

Maybe in the form of a Registry Edit perhaps?

By default, the 'Zero Configuration utility' is disabled at 'Safe Mode' Boot up.

I sometimes need to start peoples PC's up in Safe Mode from a Remote Location using LogMeIn.

At present, I can only remotely Boot them into Safe Mode if they are connected via Ethernet; not Wireless.

Thx, J.

Hi all. Just bought my 11yr old daughter a little notebook, and its just stopped connecting in normal mode to our bthomehub router. It worked fine xmas day, then stopped the next!. Ive tried all i know, which isnt much, but no luck. I get the `windows cannot display..` etc page, and the ` diagnose connection thing`, but that cant resolve the issue. Tried switching off firewall, nope!, switching off anti virus...still nothing. BUT....it WILL connect in `safe mode`??.

I also notice that the `norton` system it came with wont turn on...yet windows `defender` will. Ive done a check, and found a `defender` type virus....but i dunno if what i have installed is the real thing, or the virus.

As i said...it worked fine...now im about to join the loony party thru this!

I did not need to instal thge additional keyboard, Win XP seems to recognise it until the drivers for the wireless keyboard and mouse are loaded. I tried to boot in safe mode recently and it just booted up as it should instead of booting in safe mode. I hit F8 just as I've always done and it used to work. I tried this so many times and it never worked. I ran virus, spyware, & malware scans. I've also tried to do a repair installation and my keyboard doesn't respond. I'll hit enter, etc. and it's just like I haven't touched a thing. I've had this computer for several years and it came with this wireless keyboard. Why have I been able to access Safe Mode by hitting F8 all of those years and now it has suddenly stopped and I can't use my keyboard unless Windows is loaded. I have changed the batteries and hit reset on the receiver but it doesn't make any difference. I have had too many times over the years when Windows would not load in a normal way and I would have to hit F8 and boot in Safe Mode to make repairs, etc. and it would work with this keyboard then so why not now? I prefer to keep it working because one day, I will need it again. I downloaded the bios update for this computer today and installed it but it didn't help a bit. Can anyone explain this and what should I do?

Answer:Safe Mode & wireless keyboards

Hi there, Silly question, but are you having troubles going into safe mode then? Start your PC, and as it's at the loading screen for Windows, do a hard boot (Press the power button and hold it down until it shuts down). Then when you boot again, it should ask if you want to boot into safe mode, or normal boot.

Going into safe mode on the normal account rather than administrator gave me nothing but a blank locked up screen. Great.
I went back into the admin which still opened.. but still couldn't really do much.
Decided to see what would happen without safe mode enabled.
Loaded up. The background appeared but turned black shortly after. A program instantly started up and appeared on the desktop. Task manager worked so I closed a bunch of stuff.

Tried using the search to find some of my files. It won't find anything that's in the documents and settings folder.. Yet the folder itself is 80gb. I don't understand how everything can just be invisible from seeing it anywhere.

computer is pretty much ruined. guess it's going to have to be wiped.

I've had plenty of virus issues throughout the years but this has to be the most stressful one. definitely one of the worst days ever.

I guess it's over.

I have been having the same problem I think. Using wireless I can connect in safe mode but not regular. When I try to connect it say's page cannot be displayed. It shows the internet is connected but it will not connect. I am able to connect to my wireless network with my phone and it works fine. Toshiba said since the laptop connects in safe mode that there is a program blocking the connection and that program needs to be found. I did not want to pay them $100 for a 1 time fix. So here I am. the above post sounds similar to what I am experiencing. does it sound like the above fix would work for this issue.
Thanks

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 5610 laptop that's running Windows Vista Home Basic. I used to be able to go online wirelessly in normal mode but now it just freezes either immediately or maybe no more than 5 minutes after I connect. The only time it actually works with no problems at all is in safe mode. This would make me think it's a driver issue but I don't know what driver is causing the problem. I rolled back my wireless adapter driver and still had the same problem.

It's not a particular signal causing the problem because it happens no matter where I go. Sometimes it will work but that's only after several freezes and I don't want to have to repeatedly shut down with the power button just to go online with better screen resolution. I can go wired in normal mode with no problems btw. I heard that installing XP drivers for my wireless adapter should work but everytime I uninstall the vista drivers, vista will immediately reinstall them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:Wireless only works in safe mode - Vista

Since you are OK with ethernet in normal mode I'd estimate that there is a high probability that you have multiple wireless utilities running. Only Vista's will run in safe mode with networking. Multiple utilities will conflict and often result in frequent disconnects.

The other utility probably has a name that includes "Acer" or the manufacturer of your wireless adapter.

I've been searching the net up and down trying to figure out how to fix this problem, and I came across another thread on this site from May with someone having the SAME problem..

Here's what's up - I have a friend with a laptop who connects to his friend's internet connection wirelessly, and he was having some spyware/pop-up problems.. So I went over and we turned the laptop on, and like usual, it took a couple minutes to connect to the network.. I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, and Hijack this, and did some scans and got rid of all his pop-ups.. I also downloaded Firefox too.. We restarted the computer after all that, and the internet connection showed as active eventually - but the browser would NOT work..

I restarted into Safe Mode, and opened Firefox right up - and miraculously the internet connection was working immediately.. Now I've been over there messing with it numerous times, and I'm having no luck.. I tried it with IE7, and that browser doesn't work either.. I went into msconfig, and unchecked all the boxes under Startup - still nothing.. Firewall on or off makes no difference either..

So I was looking at the Network settings in Safe vs. Normal mode.. In Safe Mode, all it shows is the 802.11b wireless connection [I forget the brand of it], and it shows it as obviously working.. Now under Normal Mode, it shows not only THAT - but it shows an NVIDIA ethernet adaptor with an X over it in the status bar.. If I open it u... Read more

Since your other computer(mac book) connect instantly, I think the problem might be your computer and not your wireless setup and configuration. Try update your wireless adapter driver and see if it works. Also check the wireless network setup and make sure it is configure right.

Ok, Iíve been fighting with my laptop for the past 2 days trying to figure out why in the world I can only connect to my wireless internet in safe mode. I've tried everything I could think of and I consider myself pretty tech savvy. I have 3 other computers in the house (all connected wirelessly successfully) but this one is my main. Obviously there is no problem with the hardware itself and I've messed around enough with the services to have eliminated the problem there. When my laptop is booted normally the wireless indicator in the corner of the screen says that itís connected to my network although itís unidentified and local only. I've tried to release the ip address using command prompt and the error message is get is

"An error occurred while releasing interface Wireless Connection 2 : An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint.

An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The system cannot find the file specified."

I've browsed around all over the internet thinking it may have been something I did that just now is taking effect. The last process I was working on I was attempting to install Norton antivirus 2009 which I had to install .NET framework 3.5 which I was unable to do (long story there, not my computers problem Microsoftís website) the install was aborted. I've upgraded the drivers and rolled back to previous with no avail. I'm just at my wits end here I don'... Read more

Answer:Can only connect to wireless network in safe mode

Let's start with a stack reset since you mention Norton. Interestingly, I had the .NET Framework 3.5 installation crash as well, don't know what that issue is.

So I've got a XPS 14z (XPS L412Z) with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 on it. Suddenly, the wireless couldn't get a signal unless a few feet from the router. In safe mode with networking, it works perfectly, so I figured it was a software issue. Tried a system restore to a week ago, tried searching for the software that was causing it, and nothing worked.

I just wiped, and have a fresh install of windows on it this morning. It's still exhibiting the same symptoms. No connection in windows, but full strength in safe mode with networking. I've tried installing the recommended drivers to fix this issue from Dell's website, and I've tried other drivers I've found online, and nothing works. What do?

Need help please to recover files in safe mode. I am unable to boot to normal XP Pro SP2 OS. I cannot access internet with present computer. I have an onboard CD drive and have access to a USB external HP Drive. I tried copying MY Documents to this drive but it would not work. I inserted disc that came with HP drive, it would not start automatically. Went to Explore and opened folders. All the folders appear to be microsoft video files. Also attempted to load new Mcafee CD and aborted install due to Norton loaded originally. I have the new Dell Install CD and Driver CD, install CD is XP Pro SP2.

Please help need instructions to copy wanted documents, pictures, etc. and do an new install. Or detailed steps to take to get back into regular windows. I should add that i was reinstalling windows when all this started, thought all was lost on HD, Dell tech support had me remove it after running diagnostic. New HD would not install properly either. Put old HD in and ran the same check and HD passed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I need to access an .exe file when in safe mode. The instructions say to put it on the deskstop, then reboot into safe mode, but that doesn't work. Apparently only installed programs show. I've put the file into folders that show files in safe mode, but the file doesn't show when I boot into safe mode. I put it on a CD, but while the CD drive is recognized, the file doesn't come up.

About 3 days ago I opened an mp3 file that someone had sent me in Windows Media Player. Apparently it was infected, but I didn't get any notice from AVG free. The screen flashed a few times so I suspected something was amiss. I right-clicked on the file where I had saved it and had it scanned by AVG; it said infected. So I told it to remove and I believe a message came up saying removal may cause problems with the system. I had it remove anyway, I guess my mistake.

Anyway, then the symptoms started. When I tried to run any executable I would get the message Windows cannot find <filename> make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. Now I don't even get that, nothing will start.

In Safe Mode most apps will start, but I can't connect to the internet. I think when it first happened I was able to connect via Safe Mode With Networking, but not anymore. I had to leave it for a few days to finish income tax on my laptop. In Safe Mode I get messages like Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall Service and The Security Center Service can't be started.

I downloaded Hijack This and burned it to a CD on the laptop. I can run it on the infected machine, but only in Safe Mode. I can also run the AVG command-line scanner in safe mode.

Any assistance you can provide in starting to find a resolution to this would be much appreciated.

Windows Vista Home Premium X64.

Thanks.

Ok... so my mom brings me her computer... almost like I have any clue what I'm doing. NOT. She would like a few files saved before I wipe it clean n start over. If I go into the regular startup... it slows to the point of nothingness, then norton comes on to say that a trojan was found, and can't seem to do anything without it locking up.

So... started it up in safe mode. Thought, silly me, that I could just save her files that way, then erase all the crap, reload everything n give it back to her. But no... CD drives dont work in safe mode... DUH. And since some of these files are pictures, floppy isn't gonna work. What is the easiest way to save some files before the whole dang thing freaks out on me?

Evening everyone,

I have been trying to get assistance for this issue which can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic474475.html/page__gopid__2893203#entry2893203

Unfortunately the biggest problem that is causing me to be unable to fix the issue is that I can't install any files. I haven't seen anything worth noting in the Windows error logs. Per Naren after running ListParts, he suggested that the problem was found and to post a support request here. Attached is the listparts log. Please let me know if you have any questions.

My computers keeps crashing when I try to boot up in normal Windows mode. It only works in Safe Mode. The problem is, in safe mode, the USB ports do not work, nor does the disc burner. I have pictures and music files I need to back up onto an external hard drive. However, the external hard drive connects through a USB port.

Any advice as to how I can backup my files on to the external hard drive in safe mode?

Thanks.

Take the hard drive out of the computer and mount it in an external enclosure. Attach it to a working computer by USB cord and copy out what you need.

My old toshiba notebook has crashed. Yes, I dropped it....more than once to be honest. (RIP). I can only boot into 'safe mode". I get a blue screen when booting in regular mode and get caught in a continual loop.

I just purchased a HP Pavilion 8055. I have a CAT5e Crossover Patch Cable. I want to transfer all my files to my new computer.

In the past, I have used the XP wizard feature to create a network.... I can't do this in "safe mode".

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:x'fer files from safe mode to new computer?

Unfortunatley you may be stuck with bringing up a network. Im no PC expert, but I know you can get an adapter that will allow you to remove your old hard drive and use you USB port on your new laptop to make it a second drive. Then you can copy the files directly. I know some of the guys at work have the kit, its great, you can use it on any hard drive. I'll see if I can find it, its about $ 20.00

Hi There
Can u tell me what boot files are used when winxp boots.and secondly what are the boot files winxp uses when boots in safe mode........

Answer:boot files for win xp in safe mode

it uses the normal boot files it just stops any 3rd party drivers from being loaded

to repair the boot files boot from the xp cd into the recovery console and run

fixboot

if a 3rd paty driver or app is causing a problem

in safe mode boot to msconfig

on the boot tab untick all non ms items and see if it boots normally

if it does add them back one at a time and reboot until you find the one causing the problem

I have Windows XP sp3 and it fails to complete boot process every time. It reaches the desk top and variably shows desktop icons, sometimes explorer bar and some system tray icons. Moving the pointer over any of the icons or explorer bar produces the hourglass. I can only really boot up in Safe Mode but do not have Administrator password which according to the orignal seller, never set one.

I want to wipe out the XP and start fresh with Windows 7, but have important files to save before I do. I have tried everything. Help!

Answer:How can I copy my files in safe mode?

Welcome to TSF!
I'm afraid the rules won't allow us to provide any help with bypassing lost passwords, as there is no way to determine the actual circumstances.

If there was no password, it shouldn't prompt for one, so sounds like there actually is one.

Is the Administrator account the only one that appears in Safe Mode?

You can boot with the Win 7 DVD and use the command prompt to copy files to an external drive:
Boot with the DVD
Select your language and click Next
Click Repair your Computer
After it scans for Windows installations, select the Top option, then click Next
Click Command Prompt.

You can use a Ubuntu Live CD to copy files to an external drive, to another PC over a network, or bun them to disk.

Whenever I boot my computer normally, it works fine until I try to run a program, or open a folder, or do anything, and then my computer freezes. It works fine in safe mode. I have run virus scans with Avast and Malwarebytes, and found nothing. A couple days ago, avast started telling me that it was automatically running some program (C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\Utils\FjOddUnl.exe) in sandbox for some reason, but it never came up with any concrete problem, so I'm not really sure how much that matters. This laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook T-series) is a couple of years old, but I just had it repaired (under warranty) a couple weeks ago, and they replaced the HDD and the motherboard, and I really wasn't expecting to have problems like this again so soon.

this has been occurring ever since my computer was diagnosed with a trojan. i removed it, and ever since then no .EXE files will open. I will click on any .EXE file, the revolving circle signifying loading will show for a second, and then it won't load at all - the program is not present in the task manager.

the weird thing is, there is no difference in safe mode. no .EXE file will run in any variation of safe mode. this prevents me from running ANYTHING apart from the command prompt, viewing folders, and notepad. i cannot load the internet, a virus scanner, NOTHING. it is difficult to fix something when one is literally unable to access anything.

i have attempted the 'repair my computer' option when i press f8, but it says it can't be repaired automatically. i downloaded a registry fix from a different computer, but it reads the message "Could not import exefix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes".

I cannot load a registry fix, virus scanner, or the internet. i STILL cannot open .EXE files in any variation of safe mode. i do not have the windows 7 disc so i cannot reformat. additionally, the trojan appears to have erased all my system restore points, so i cannot restore to any previous time.

i have literally run out of ideas. i can't even install any fixes! any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Answer:.EXE Files Do Not Open - even in safe mode!

A long time ago, I had something similar happen to me. I found my computer infected with some variant of the WinA Lizard (or something like that) virus that infected every .exe file I ran while it was on my system. It hosed every executable on the HD b/c it actually infected my command.com (in windows 95 - shows you *how* long ago). I got lucky b/c I loved making all of my .ZIP files self extracting executable files, and hosed every single one of the. I was able to still manually open the files using WinZIP, but I learned then not to make self-extracting executable files anymore.

At any rate, though, I found so many residual problems with that system I eventually formatted and reinstalled my OS. In this case, unless you can figure out how to restore your system to work correctly, this may end up being your only option.

Hey guys,

Had success posting here before so I am going to try it again. My friend gave me her laptop and stated her son had been on it and now they believe they have a virus (didn't provide me with additional details). This laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium. I open it up tonight and here is what I noticed:

1) McAfee is continually stating that the computer is at risk.
2) Internet Explorer does not run at all. iexplore.exe is where it belongs but nothing happens when attempting to run.
3) Installer is not installing files. I attempted to install Mozilla Firefox. From the thumb drive UAC did come up but that was it. Copying the file to the desktop and attempting to install did nothing. Checking through error logs, I did see a notice that the installer service is not running correctly and that it could be installed incorrectly (ironic eh?)
4) Safe mode did not work. After attempting to run safe mode (w/ networking), it loaded 3 files finishing with hal.dll. It then proceeded to the repair installer, stating to reboot and if it worked successfully Windows will run normally.

okay... so i was trying to get into safemode so i could run an antivirus scan, problem is whenever i tried going in safemode the blue screen would pop up and computer would restart. now for some dumb reason i thought maybe i could get in safemode if i used msconfig and selected safe mode from the boot menu. so the computer restarted and now it boots in safemode but the blue screen and restart happen everytime now. ive tried "start windows normally" but that boots in safemode.... ive tried "last known good config..." and that too boots in safemode. so now im stuck, i cant get on windows. any help please?

im willing to start over but i dont know how to do that from here

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Thanks
Anthony

Hi All,

I work as a tech support exec, (yeah tech support needs tech support )

Most of the time we need to boot in safe mode with Networking to fix some of the issues.
In some of the windows 10 computers wireless not working in safe mode with Networking

For an example my dell 5547. Has a wireless card, Intel Ac-3160 works fine in normal mode,
But in safe mode it refuses to detect any Network,
I am seeing similar behavior in some other models too in windows 10

any one faced same issues or have a solution ... I will be thankful

I have a virus, but before I can even begin to solve that problem, I need to get my computer into safe mode.
I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop EX110 keyboard & mouse. There doesn't seem to be any connection at the time when I am supposed to push F8.

Do I just need to go buy a wired keyboard? Is there any way around that?

Thanks much.

Answer:Solved: Safe Mode w/ wireless keyboard & mouse

You need to get a wired keyboard or else you may indeed be out of luck. You can try to get into bios and see if Legacy USB support is enabled. But I believe you might indeed need to get a wired keyboard/mouse combo. Luckily they are pretty cheap Might even be able to pick one up on your local craigslist.

-Disable Bonjour
-Reinstall the wireless drivers
-System restore
-Check for malware
-Disable IPv6
I also tried 1 or 2 other tricks but nothing work. Can you recommend me something, that I haven't tried?
P.S:My Wireless card is Broadband(in case someone can give me a driver that I haven't tried(and I have tried every driver in Lenovo's site))

Hello,

PC --- wireless --- Netgear WL router --- DSL modem --- Internet

This is an old PC with Windows XP with SP2 and Netgear WG111v3 USB dongle. The PC was connected over wireless to a Netgear Router (sorry dont remember the model number - I will mention it a bit later since I am typing this from a laptop not near the above setup).

As usual, everything was working fine, when suddenly one day, the PC would not connect over wireless anymore. I tried re-entering the password manually on the WG111 GUI, but it did not work. I even removed the security on the Netgear router so that no password is needed. But it still did not connect.
Meanwhile I was able to connect to that same Netgear router from this laptop before and after removing the password (after making necessary config changes on the network setup on the laptop).

When I did ' ipconfig' on the PC, it would show that the IP addr was 0.0.0.0.
When I checked the ' Attached Devices' on the Netgear router, I would see the MAC address of the PC, but it would not show the IP addr and the PC name.

When I tried to go into Settings -> Control Panel -> Networking -> Wireless adapter -> Protocols -> IP, the properties button was grayed out. When I clicked on the 'Install' button, I got the following error:

The string universal unique identifier (UUID) is invalid

I tried System Restore, and I briefly succeeded in getting a wireless connection, but when I rebooted, it wen... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Wireless networking works only from Safe Mode

I'm guessing that some other device (more exactly it's driver) is conflicting with the driver for the Netgear usb wireless adapter. It works in safe mode with networking because in that mode only the network driver is loaded, which means no other third-party driver can interfere with it.

The offending driver may not be a hardware driver. Third-party firewalls and antivirus software also install drivers, as do some CD-burning applications.

Hi everyone,

I have a very annoying problem with my wireless adapter. My flatmates and I recently had 50MB internet installed. The connection itself is fine, when my laptop is connected via cable it tests near to 50MB, and my flatmates' laptops get a good speed wirelessly too.

When I connect wirelessly it is incredibly slow - testing at less than 1MB. The tests themselves seem to stutter and pause. Downloads are slow (less than 100kb/s) and web pages are slow to open and often hang.

I have a nearly new Dell Inspiron laptop, with an Intel Centrino 1030-N wireless adapter. Windows 7 Home Premium 64.

Now - the strange bit - when I boot in safe mode with networking enabled and connect wirelessly the connection is fast (consistently tests at 40MB+).

I assumed this meant there was a conflicting service or something, but could not find which ones were causing the problem after spending an entire day of trial-and-error switching them off.

I became so frustrated that I formatted the drive and performed a fresh install of windows.... Same problem. Even though I only installed the network drivers the exact same problem has re-occured - fast on safe mode, terribly slow on normal boot.

So, to summarise, so far I have tried:

Updating wireless adapter drivers (and rolling back to older drivers - no change)
Re-installling windows (so no chance of any spyware, adware, or viruses)
Switching off startup services which could be potential culprits - no change

This is really anno... Read more

Hey everyone,

I had 50meg cable broadband installed today. With a wired connection and on my friend's wireless laptop speeds are as expected.

But on my Dell Windows 7 laptop the connection is unreliable (it doesn't disconnect, but hangs whilst saying "looking up www...." or "connecting to www......") and speedtest.net shows speeds as low as 0.3MB (it also hangs on these speed tests).

The strange thing is, though, in safe mode with networking it's fine - speeds reported at 47MB and browsing is lightning-fast.

Assuming the problem to be with a conflict between programs, I removed McAfee and ran the extra removal tool, but it made no difference. I then tried booting with no startup programs ticked in msconfig, and it made no difference. But if I switch back to safe mode it goes back to high speeds....

Really annoyed because I'm desperate to use my new fast internet! lol

Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Alec.

I'm trying to fix someones laptop. The wired and wireless internet won't work. The wireless card can see my home network, but after a about 30 seconds after trying to connect it says that the connection has been unsuccessful.

Since it didn't even work in safe mode I thought maybe it was something in the registry. I tried CCleaner and it didn't work.

Also tried, connecting to a different network, uninstalling the drivers (but computer keeps finding the drivers and reinstalling them) , some lines in the cmd that were supposed to reset my tcp/ip settings. I'm lost. Nothing else seems to be wrong with the computer, no other fishy activity. Thanks in advance.

btw Toshiba Satellite Win 7 x64, I have tried wireless and wired and multiple access points.

Answer:Can't connect to internet. Wired or Wireless. Even in safe mode.

In Safe mode few drivers are running, unless you chose Safe mode with networking, and even then it'd probably only be the ethernet port that worked anyway.

Has your router been programmed with a MAC whitelist?

Resorting to a registry scrubber isn't an awfully good idea...

Are the correct drivers onboard for ethernet and WiFi adapters?

You might try uninstalling the wireless connection software that installed with the drivers, you should see it there in add/remove programs.

Let Windows handle that part of the connection instead, it usually works better that way.

Well, I've been scouring Google on our secondary computer all night, and I'm stumped. I'm also not completely tech savvy, so please forgive me.

My computer shut down by itself while I was typing an email. Rebooted and no exe files would open except IE 64 bit (as of six hours later, now that won't open either - opens, flashes, closes and says IE crashed). It has gone through numerous "windows won't start, repairing" screens. It has tried to system restore, but it doesn't fix the problem.

I cannot open in safe mode, and Task Manager is missing. I can open regedit but not msconfig (this is bothersome because I found a workaround for getting the system to reopen in safe mode by changing some configurations, but...) Can't open device manager as one option suggested looking for the possible virus culprit in the tools/drivers section.

I found a site that had an exe repair fix to either merge or import into the registry, but it keeps saying it can't do it because there are "processes running." Those boards suggested trying to the merge/import in safe mode, but as above..can't open in safe mode. Also since I have no task manager available, I can't manually end or suspend any processes.

Windows Defender runs but says everything is a-ok (clearly not).

Because I don't feel comfortable deleting anything from the registry, that's the only thing I haven't tried. Oh, I did find something that said to check the shell and one other place in the registry, bu... Read more

Answer:No exe files will open, nor msconfig or safe mode

Okay, I restarted and finally was able to get into msconfig. I set it up so the computer automatically starts in Safe Mode. Tried importing/merging that exe file again, and nope, says "other processes are running." Went into services through msconfig and shut down all services - still didn't work.

I also find a possible solution to create a new user - won't let me. Sigh....

I'm using Windows 10 on my laptop. Few days ago, I found a process in task manager (I forgot the name) which seemed suspicious. So I searched the internet for it and found out that it is a cryptocurrency mining app so I looked for up how to remove it. I downloaded Malwarebytes first it cleared some stuff. Then I downloaded HitmanPro after which all the problem started, I guess. It scanned my pc for a while without showing any result. After a minute it showed some files that were scanned and all of them were Firefox Browser's cache. But at the exact same time Windows Defender started showing virus detected notification. I panicked and stopped the HitmanPro scan and restarted my pc to remove stuff from Malwarebytes scan and this scan. After this restart, everytime I start my laptop, it shows the error "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute". Tried a lot pf fixes from the internet but to no avail. The final option I think I have is to reset my pc. But here's the problem. My laptop is only starting in safe mode due to "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute" error. I can't select the option of 'Keep my files and reset pc' from settings cause it isn't working in safe mode. I started the System recovery by F11 option while starting the pc and there's a reset option too. Please tell me will I get to keep my files if I reset my pc from there?
Also the salesperson already created a Recovery drive on the hard disk itself. I also have the Recovery CD with me.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me please? I have some files on an external hard-drive that I've had problems accessing and have finally managed to figure out how to take ownership of the files by booting up my PC in safe mode (I have Windows XP Home), logging in as an administrator and then changing to administrator in the owner tab. I've now transferred all the files to the desktop on my PC but I now have the problem that I can only access them in safe mode and am unable to transfer them onto a CD or DVD rom and my memory stick won't register either. The files don't appear on my desktop when I boot up my PC the usual way, even though my setting in user accounts is admin. How do I go about transferring these files for use on my laptop (Windows 7 Professional) or on my PC in normal mode? Help!!!!

Trying to clean my soon-to-be father-in-law's laptop, and it is an absolute mess. He had worked with it for months w/o firewall/antivirus-program etc.... It has become unbearable for him (too slow, hardly any interent access, pop-ups, security warnings too many to mention...)

It's a Dell laptop with XP Professional 2002, Service Pack 1.

I tried to clean it in Safe Mode: there I ran CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and Avira, each a couple of times. Avira told me after scanning that some files were locked, and they would be deleted on reboot, but after restarting, it found the same files again.

I located those dll files myself and tried to delete them manually (still in Safe Mode), but they couldn't be deleted or moved...
Some of them are:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hdowabki.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)
C:\DOCUME~1\RONPROS~1\rxmfpocj.dll (TR/Vundo.Gen Trojan)

I am at a loss. Usually I was always able to manually delete those kind of files in Safe Mode.

I posted to the forums at Mcafee as well because originally I thought this was a virus.
Here is a copy of what I put up at Mcafee.

am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but I couldnt find one more specific.
I will include as much info as I can.
I am not a computer whiz, but I am not toally ignorant either.

2 weeks ago my 1yr old shut off my PC via the surge protector. Then it would not turn back on. I called the Geek Squad and they said sounds like a power supply. I told a computer saavy friend what the Geeks said and he said you can do that yourself. He brought over an extra power supply he had and popped it in for me until the one I ordered from Tiger Direct came. Everything worked fine. Then I took his out and replaced it with the new one and the pc would not boot passed the windows log on screen. It would start up as normal and then get to the log on screen and completely shut down and cannot be restarted without resetting the power supply.

It will however, fully boot in Safe Mode.

I thought maybe a heat issue?? So I pulled the fan and put on the heat gel stuff and still will not boot past Windows log on screen and then completely shuts down.

I figure, I must have a virus. I had Norton on the PC. I figured it must suck so i went out and bought McAfee Total Protection. I installed Mcafee in safe Mode and it ran a virus check and found nothing. I am unable to access the Mcaffee product via the icon or programs list. It just does nothing when I click on it.... Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

Answer:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Hello,

I've got a peculiar and suspicious problem, but an expert in the Malware Removal forum found no infection on my computer (see the thread here.)

One of the symptoms I'm seeing is that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installer will not complete without errors in Windows XP Pro SP3 after a normal boot. After acknowledging the errors during the install routine (which are always the same, a screenshot is attached to this thread), the installer seems to finish. However, the second symptom is that MBAM then will not run due to the same pop-up error message. It's a Visual C++ Runtime Library error that says, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Please see the screenshot in this Malware Removal thread.

I know that normally, some malware will disallow running the normal filename for MBAM, so the first thing I tried was renaming the file to something else, including using different file extension such as .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. None of these renaming attempts worked. This is where I started to observe really strange behavior. After uninstalling my first MBAM install attempt, I found that I could install MBAM when booted to Safe Mode (after changing the registry to allow this and starting the installer service in Safe Mode). After the install I could also run MBAM in safe mode. I then rebooted to normal mode, and MBAM sti... Read more

Can someone help? This started acting up around 1:30pm (February 3rd) at school. Everything works with a Live CD (Ubuntu 8.0.4) and nicely with Safe Mode Networking and a System restore.

I tried uninstalling my drivers and updating them and it didn't help. Any other options?

Laptop specs (Inspiron 1520) :

Core 2 Duo T7200
160GB HDD 7200RPM Sata
Intel Wireless Pro a/b/g (I think it was 395 or something)
10/100Mbit NIC
8600M GT 256MB
And of course Windows XP Pro SP3

This was working fine before Tuesday and then it just decides to bug me.

HELP? Need this working for school.

Answer:Wireless/Ethernet Works in Safe mode but not in Regular Windows??

Hey guys,

Was tasked to fix another laptop. Oddly enough this issue is similar to the one I fixed a few weeks ago, found here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic475072.html

This is for a Windows XP Media Center edition laptop. I attempted to run Last Known Good Configuration, however that didn't resolve anything. Reading the preparation guide, I attempted to download and run DDS.com, however it would not run on the laptop. When attempting to run that, as well as any of the internet programs on the laptop, I see the hour glass real quickly and then that's it. I didn't notice anything in the error logs regarding the applications attempting to run.

I attempted to run both Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ command prompt. Safe mode will load, however it only gets me to the black splash screen saying it's in safe mode and the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+delete won't work for me to load explorer.

Please let me know where to start so that we can resolve this issue. I have a feeling where to start but I know as well as any it's very annoying when people want to jump 5 steps ahead.

Thanks!

Answer:Can't open any browsers, install files, no safe mode

As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My desktop after a while will not open any programs or files. I would say after 30 min to an hour. I have to reset the computer manually and the whole issue happens again. This doesn't appear to happen in safe mode though. I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains. I run windows 7 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Answer:computer unable to open files after a while, ok in safe mode

Hello prerunner97,

You could try a Clean Startup and see if you can determine a startup program you have that is causing the issue.
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You stated "I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains."
Does that mean you found malware, and removed what was found?
If so, maybe there are still some malware problems?
I'm no Malware expert, but there is a SF System Security forum where you could add a thread explaining your issue, and experts there might be able to help you.

I can only run my machine (OS: Windows XP Prof. 5.1 SP3) in safe mode. When I try to start Windows XP in normal mode I get the blue screen after a few minutes and a message that says ?Driver IRQL not less or equal? and then a series of Stop codes. This situation started after I had been using the hibernate option for a few days. After I had shut down fully and restarted I got a message stating that Windows had successfully installed the following update: Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002). At the same time I got a Microsoft Security Centre message telling me that McAfee Virus protection was not operating. Then my computer crashed and I got the blue screen. It may be relevant that a week earlier I had received a pop-up advertising virus protection. When I tried to close it, it started to download so I closed my browser quickly and ran both a McAfee and Malwarebytes scan. The Malwarebytes found and dealt with the following:Registry Keys Infected:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{1d4db7d2-6ec9-47a3-bd87-1e41684e07bb} (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{4d25f926-b9fe-4682-bf72-8ab8210d6d75} (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.Registry Values Infected:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft... My Win7 laptop only boots in safe mode (safe networking also works) but not in normal mode. It shuts down right after logging into normal mode. I ran sfc scannow thrice and it says that it found corrupt files but was not able to fix some of them. I can't upload the CBS log file due to size limitations (it's 7MB).
What should I try next?
Thanks.

I was surfing online and randomly this adobe flash installer caused my UAC to pop up asking to allow the install, I know it wasn't flash but it just kept coming up so I shutdown, got into safemode, files looked gone, but I just checked show hidden files. I ran combofix since i've used it numerous times before, but without a script this time. It never showed its logs, but it deleted the infected files. Then I ran hijackthis and found some suspicious stuff running.. RKill shut down some processes for me too, but I don't seem to be able to decipher them well. In conclusion I have hidden files all across my system now, my program shortcuts aren't in the start menu, except remote desktop connection.. I did have to remove the virus causing the popups and all to come. I did not record down the name, didn't even think of it.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

I recently attempted to clean my brother's computer after he aquired a virus from the torrent file program he uses. Regardless, I cleaned a trojan and a backdoor from his system from safe mode. I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

OS= Win 7

Answer:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Answer:Win.xp emachine starts and runs safe mode, safe mode with networking

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

I have Dell Inspiron 1526 Vista Home Premium - wireless stopped working, no networks found. I can connect via wired and via an AT&T Communicator Manager (it tells me no wireless network adapter). However, when I boot in Safe Mode/Networking the wireless networks appear and I can connect using wireless. Prior to Safe Mode I looked at the device manager and it states devices working properly. Windows also determined that the drivers were OK.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

One other side issue: while in Safe Mode/Networking tried to change screen resolution from 800 to 1024 but the change did not take.

Answer:Inspiron 1526 Vista wireless only working in Safe Mode/Networking

Someone suggested I create a new user so I created a new user with admin privs, then logged in as that user, logged out, and then logged in with my original account. Now the wireless is working! Magic? or some reasonable explanation of what happened? And also, can I now delete the new user? Thanks!
