Blocking a Wi-Fi thief

Question: Blocking a Wi-Fi thief

I have no idea what forum this post should be in. Hope I guessed right
I have a thing called SoftPerfect WIFI Guard It has detected someone using my WIFI signal. is there a way I can block them?
Here's the thing I am not selfish. If after I block them from using my WIFI, I don't see any significant Change in speed or performance. I will just go ahead and let them use the WIFI.

Preferred Solution: Blocking a Wi-Fi thief

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All...
Hope you can help! I know for a fact that my neighbour is using my internet connection, I can see his machine's IP address when I go to the router's page. (Its a Thomson TG585v7 with o2, UK)
I have a security key and am using WPA-PSK encryption.
The problem is, he works for HP, doing security something-or-other, and so he obviously has software or even hardware to break into my connection. My connection speed is now slow and useless, I only watch TV on streaming sites like bbci and 4od so this is really annoying me...!!! It's cheap and low-down, and that is why I desperately want to stop him stealing my connection!

I have gone through various steps with my ISP to try and remedy this, but nothing so far has worked. I'm now wondering if I can block his IP address and device code to stop him doing it?

Is there anyway to block his device? I've tried everything on the Thomson connection page, but it won't let me do anything like it!

ARGH!!!!!!!!!

I'm just so ticked off that someone is so pathetic that they have to steal my already rubbish connection, I'm desperate to get rid of him...

Please anyone, any ideas on how I can get rid of this idiot?

I don't know a great deal about tech stuff, so please go slow, I'm a beginner!!!
THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!

After three days of problems I've finally found MVC.EXE on my list of processes which was using 120K and keeping the processor running at 100%.
BUT neither AVG or Superantispy or Advanced Disc Cleaner detected anything wrong.
Other helpers on line suggested Avast and HighjackThis but could not download them.
Hunting around for anything which was antivirus I found Multi Virus Cleaner 2009.
Brilliant! I could unzip the program and run it.
The quick scan (quick? 2 hours) detected nothing. The Deep scan froze.
Back to processes where I found MVC.EXE so googled that and YES Its the virus.
But is it the same as Multi Virus Cleaner 2009?????

But since it stops me downloading anything which will harm it (sounds like an alien) what can I do to remove it.
Husband suggests a hammer!

Ever since this game came out I have been having trouble with it. At the time I attributed the low FPS to an aging video card. After getting a GeForce 6800 GT I don’t think I should have any trouble with this game, or any other for that matter. However, the last time I used fraps to count the frame rate I got 7 FPS on the main menus and around 3 in the game itself. A while ago it was suggested that my old DDR266 ram was bottlenecking my cards performance, so I upgraded to the fastest that my motherboard can support: DDR400. Still it causes the same problems. Other things I have tried doing include:

Defragmenting my drive
Disabling extra services with he instructions at www.Blackviper.com
Using Spybot-Search and Destroy to remove adware and spyware
Using Norton to remove any viruses then disabling it
Over clocking my CPU and Video card
Formatting my hard drive and reinstalling windows
Buying a new hard drive

None of these things have had the slightest difference in the games performance. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?

Answer:Low FPS in Thief: DS

Your system is similar to mine, except I use an AMD64 3500 and have the my 6800 GT's in SLI mode.

But before I upgraded the system I used a P4 2.8 and had no problems at all.

How do other games run and have you cheaked for game patches or issues with your current graphics drivers or settings?

Question: Too catch a thief

Hey Tech,

Ive usually asked you to help me clean out dirty files from risky surfing, but this time I come seeking information about how I can catch these thieves that have been breaking into the school I teach at every weekend. I know which boys it is, but I havent been able to get any evidence to prove it. That is until this past weekend. I went and bought a web cam and hid it in the room over the holiday break. My problem is you can watch the 10.3gig recording on windows media player, but when it comes to the part where they break in, its way dark and alot of snow. However, I have adobe premiere elements and wanted to try and brighten it up with that before i seek more professional software. The problem is how can i break the file up in smaller bits so I dont freeze everytime i try to open in elements. I have the file on a school pc with low ram and basic perfformance. Ive been trying to to save it on my creative zen and i get wrong format>?? lol its a wmv... then i just went bought a 120 gig external drive and it says file too big?? lolol Is there a way i can just break this file up without having to pull it into a editing software first. The file says 10.3 gig but Im thinking it must be bigger. Afterall, it recorded from friday afternoon until 8 am tueday morning. It loads in media player and starts shiowing recording right off with no buffering. Is there a way to slice up the video without having to pull it into a program, it dont like that! lol any h... Answer:Too catch a thief

Wow, it seems like you've got a huge problem there.

File is too big because you're using FAT32 file system I think. That would limit your files to... 4.3gb max? You'll have to reformat it to NTFS if thats the case.

Unfortunately I don't think premier elements would help in identifying these guys, if you can't identify them anyway through the dark. Its worth a shot though to brighten the pic a little to see if more details show up.

Webcams usually have low res, so if the cam is placed far from where they broke in, you won't be able to see much.

Unless you bought a high quality one, and set it to capture at high quality, you'd get alot of static (or snow, I believe you're referring to). You can't get rid of that.

My suggestion is that you send the file off to the local police, but I'm not sure of the legality of webcam recordings....

Another suggestion would be to install security cameras around, some fake and some real. Maybe just one or two real ones, and flood the school with a whole lot of fakes. Make sure they're identical. And make it public that the school has started to record from these cameras. Its a great deterrent mostly, and the real ones can be used to monitor important places (school entry/exit points?). Fake cameras are cheap, but getting the real ones professionally installed would cost quite abit, but worth it IMO.

Ok i'm playing Thief 3 (Deadly Shadows) at the moment and i've came accross a serious problem/bug. For people who are familar with the game i'm at the stage where i have to go back to the Keeper Library and inform the Keepers that xxxxxxx is the hag (xxxxxxx = spoiler). right so i'm in Old Quarter and i need to get back to Stonemarket Plaza to enter the keeper Libary again only everytime i enter Stonemarket and the Stonemarket area loads up it crashes during the loading process. Now from what i can see there are two ways i can enter Stonemarket. One is directly from Old Quarter and one is to got into the Docks and from there enter South Quarter then Stonemarket. I can enter the Docks and South Quarter no problem but i can't access Stonmarket from either entrance. I'm quite far on in the game and i certainly don't want to restart. I've looked on the net for patches but it seems there are none apart from 1.1 but i have version 1.1 already. Any ideas, sugestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank, Max.

Hello all! I have had dsl now for 3 years, and have not had really any problems with it, until two weeks ago. All of a sudden, I would loose my connection...maybe for a minute, or two, and then it would be fine. It was becoming a very annoying problem. Because it was so sporadic, when I would call tech support, (and you know that it wouldn't happen then), they could not help me, because they showed I was connected and there was not a problem with the network! I live in a trailor park, and I am surrounded by my neighbors. There are some kids that moved in next to me about a month ago. When I heard they were up this morning, I turned off my wireless on my modem...and I haven't had the problem since. I'm almost positive that they were using my internet connection! I guess I just didn't think about that happening! I just wanted to share that with you, so be aware...you could have a thief in your neighborhood!! Take care everybody!

Question: Thief 2 error

up until about a week ago I could play Thief 2 on my system just fine. Then all of a sudden it started giving me one of those "this program has encountered a problem and needs to close" errors whenever I try to run the game. I have uninstalled and reinstalled teh program several times, and have even taken the entries for it out ofhte registry. Running it in compatibility mode also does not seem to solve the problem. Does anyeone havea any clue what this problem might be? Or at the very least where I might be able to go to find an answer?

Question: Thief Gold

i have been having problems with Thief Gold, as you have probably guessed by the subject of this post. the gme loads up fine, i continue a saved game, and it takes me to where i was when i saved last. so i let it load up all the way, then i look around with my mouse to see if there is anyone in the area. then i press the forward key to make Garret move forward, and guess what happens! the program shuts down completly. the first time this happened, i was running it on a different hard drive. then i bought a new HD because i needed one. so i installed Thief on the new HD and it worked fine. now this started up again. the first time it happened on this hard drive, it gave me an error message saying that Explorer has made an illegal action in User.exe. i dont know if that has anything to do with it or not, but it might. so get back to me on this if you could.

Hi i am not sure how i came by this problem it was just there one day no warning or anything. I have AVG, Ad-Aware, and spybot search and destroy. i had like 3 other viruses and they are gone now but what ever this is i am getting popping up on my desktop i can not find how to get rid of. I have read a few other forums with the same or similar problem and that led me to get Kaspersky online scanner, Hijackthis, and killbox. The problem is i have these shortcuts on my desktop that i did not put there, one is called BEST free galleries, the other is SUPER PORN. I have taken them to the trash bin over and over again but they keep just appearing there. also I get this critical system warning that says, "Critical System Warning! Your system is probably infected with a version of Spyware.IEPass.thief. This may result in website access passwords being stolen from Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Outlook etc. Click Yes to scan and remove threats. (recommended)". when i choose yes it takes me to a place that has to do with Spyshredder software but it does not let me do any thing because my anti-virus warnings start telling me its stopping a virus so i close out of the site. I am going to list the kaspersky and hijackthis reports. and then maybe some one can tell me how to fix this problem.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 10:27:50 AM, on 6/25/2008Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16681)Boot mo... I know why too.
Stupidly, I tried to modify the Dark.CFG file with Wordpad and now the game won't run.

I reverted back to the original file and have uninstalled and re-installed but it still won't run because Wordpad keeps recognising the file type.
Is there any way I can restore the opens with tab on properties to 'unrecognised file type'?

I don't want any program to recognise CFG files. I have tried deleting Wordpad but it keeps coming back (bloody Microsoft, grrr).

I've just recently started playingthief 3 (deadly shadows) again and i'm just getting constant crashes. Sometimes bsod's, sometimes it'll crash to the desktop and sometimes it'll reboot. I'm not even getting 30secs in sometimes so it's getting really unplayable. I'm quite positive it's not my hardware cos no other games do this. Also i'm running a dual boot with Vista and xp and it does the same on both operating systems. All drivers are latest. I've tried both ati and omega drivers, same problem, i've tried earlier sound card drivers and loads of other drivers off asus's site and i just can't narrow this down at all. System specs are above. Anybody shed any light or offer anything at all. I really would be very, very grateful. Thanks a million, Max.

Hi helpers
Gmail has suspended my email account stating a violation of policy. I have read their policy and as far as I can tell - I have violated nothing!
I have completed the "tell us what happened" box, they [Gmail] state a reply will ONLY be generated if they [Gmail] have made a mistake.
10 days have gone by - they have no phone support. Complete the "tell us what happened" box again - they don't reply. Gmail administrators in their forums just ignore and choose not to answer any questions - Other Gmail help topics and links send you round the bend in an endless loop.
So I guess I should just ignore the business emails I have waiting to be answered, my calendar entries that I can no longer make or access, the andriod account, my youtube account, my PayPal account, my ebay account that are all linked to my gmail email address - not to mention the 80GIG of paid storage I have on their server!
Tell me what I have violated - refund my paid storage, release my emails.
This has to be illegal?
Any advise please?
Thanks
Neil.

There was a patch issued for Thief 1. It's available at www.thief-thecircle.com. On the right side there is a link for file/downloads. You should be able to find it in there. I don't know that it will address your specific issue but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Hope that helps!

I have Foxit Phantom v2, which includes a pdf print driver. I use the phantom pdf driver a lot, but like to keep my HP 7110 as default. This seems to be a problem, as the default constantly switches to the Phantom pdf driver.

I suspect that it's a problem with Phantom or a win7 bug, but thought it worth asking: Does win7 switch default printers if it thinks you use one more than the other?

Thanks,
James

i also tried the 3d analyse , everything was fine when the game crashed soon after the into . i have the 54 v drivers . also i dont know the settings of 3d analyse
HEELP

MY SPECS : P4 1.5 Gz
384 ram
geforce 4 mx 440

Answer:thief 3 on geforce 4 mx ( 3d analyse )

The GF4 MX series does not have pixel shader 1.1 support...the GF3 series should work, and the GF4 Ti series will work, but not MX's...sorry, but you can blame nVidia for making this insane naming system where a GF4 MX is actually not better than a GF3...

Hello, my computer has the following issues:

- A Vista Antivirus screen will pop up frequently indicating that I have spyware that needs to be removed. I dl-ed and ran Spybot S&D, which detected VAV and removed it, so the popups aren't occurring anymore, but it still seems to present in my logfile
- When I start the computer, I get a popup indicating that PCPrivacyCleaner has detected something and needs to remove it.
- I also get popups telling me that my computer is infected with Spyware.IEPass.thief.

I just ran SpybotS&D, Lavasoft Adaware, and CWShredder, then ran HijackThis, but my computer still seems to be infected. The logfile is below - would you be able to take a look? Thank you so much!

Hello all,

A few months ago my house was robbed and my netbook (a Gateway LT3013u running Windows Vista Basic) stolen. The local detective did a great job - she found the thief, he confessed, and she retrieved the netbook and power cord and returned them to me.

When I turned on the computer, it was on the Windows Vista account creation page. Clearly, the thief had wiped the computer and reinstalled Windows in preparation for reselling it. The Windows Proof of License sticker was missing. I set up an account and checked the computer properties; it said that Windows had been activated and it had a product ID for Windows Vista Basic. Looking at the User Accounts, the account I created is the administrator, and there's a Guest account that's currently off.

My worry is that the thief may have also installed a keylogger or some similar identity theft tool, so I have not connected the computer to the internet. (I'm writing this on my work computer).

I would just do another Windows clean reinstall, but the Product Key sticker is missing.

My question is: what would you do in my situation? Am I being overly paranoid? To be truly safe, should I buy a new copy of Windows Vista Basic and install that? Would I be safe just getting a really good antivirus program and scanning the computer with that?

I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Got back my stolen computer - what could thief have done?

My first advice, albeit sounds bad, but I would recommend buying another copy of Windows Vista and using that key.

Man Uses Remote Logon to Nab Laptop Thief

I guess this guy should have stuck to watching porn on the stolen laptop and he wouldn?t have been caught. Let this be a valuable lesson to all you thieves?.sit around watching porn and you're safe.

His first efforts to figure out who stole the laptop by logging on remotely were stymied, Caceres said. "It was kind of frustrating because he was mostly using it to watch porn," he said. "I couldn't get any information on him." But then the suspect typed in a name and address to register on a Web site, and a few hours later, police caught the suspect.

So here's the beef, so to speak.

I recently purchased off Amazon a used copy of the original Thief: The Dark Project. I chose this game as my comp is pretty low-spec, but I thought running Thief would be fine. I installed the game to Maximum (about 350MB) and ran it. And, as per EVERY game or software that is run on my comp it crashes with the error message:

"ERROR: buff len of 80 exceeded by 87:
intro.avi
C:\(etc. etc.)\thief\movies"

I tried copying intro.avi from the CD to the directory listed bu tnto no avail. I haven't the faintest clue what this error message means. Any ideas at all?

I have Windows XP Pro and I just rebooted my computer yesterday after encountering spyware. And now I seemed to have gotten it again. My computer keeps randomly opening the same boxes asking me whether to go protected or unprotected and it says I have Spyware.IEpass.Thief detected. I also have two icons on the right side of the toolbar. One is a red circle with a white X that says STOP! Check connection status and another one is a Yellow triangle with a black exclamaion point that says Warning! Performance status. I also keep getting two porn items on my desktop. One is NUDE girls and the other is FREE porn and I keep dragging them to my recycling bin and after a few minutes they reappear. What should I do?

This story could be four- or five printed pages; but, I'll try to keep it as short as possible and get sufficient details in.

In January 2007, I sent my Palm TX for repair. It had a drifting touch-screen sensitivity. They didn't repair it but sent me a "refurbished" unit. In May (this month), it quit working altogether and I sent it for repair again. After three weeks, I checked its status and found they expected to have it another week before even updating the status.

I called on May 18 and 19 complaining vociferousy about the slow service and complaining that due to the intended use of the product, this service time was totally unacceptable. I complained strongly enough that I think I might have been the topic of conversation those afternoons.

On May 20, Palm called to tell me my unit was water damaged and therefore could not be repaired. Frankly, I think I have been too careful to have been the one who water damaged the unit. If there was any evidence of water inside the unit, I think it may have been from the previous owner and the failure in May was from a totally unrelated reason.

I got my unit (or a unit) back today and here are the facts that make me believe someone at the Palm repair center may be a thief. The last item in the list is the real kicker:
The Palm logo on the returned unit was significantly rubbed off; mine had a perfect logo.
The replacement had no screen protector; mine had one.
The returned Palm had light scratches on the sc... Read more

Just like the title says, I have a bit of trouble with Thief Deadly Shadows.
I start the game, and it works fine for a while, but after about 25 minutes, the game will lock up. It'll freeze, and the sound will begin skipping, like a broken record. I can't alt+tab, windows key, or ctrl+alt+del to get out, I have to do a manual reset. Sometimes, after this all happens, my save file will be corrupted. I've lost about 15 hours of gameplay because my save file keeps goofing up. Even if I back it up, it still happens.
I've tried looking online for a patch or a fix, but nothing. I thought it might have been a scratch on the game disk, but it isn't.
Can anyone help me out?
TIA
D

I was told it is possible to track down someone using just the headers of an email that was sent to me. I was victimized by a jerk in Manitoba, Canada to the tune of $160.00. This person, taking online Microsoft college classes, stole 2 of my PC's, made herself network administrator of my remaining 6 PC's, accessed my bank account, stole my $165,000 inheritance, hid or access-denied all of the files on all computers & all spare HDD's I attached, caused everything to crash, & when law enforcement refused to believe me, poisoned me, put me in the hospital fighting for my life, and while I was gone, stole all of my possessions & heirlooms and left my home bare. I had taken the PC's and HDD's to the hospital with me, and one understanding officer retrieved the 2 stolen PC's, which have most of the proof I need to convict the perpetrator. If I can now unhide/remove the access denied attributes from all the other HDD's, I can prove my case to someone. How can I do that?

Answer:A known hacker/ID thief either hid or access-denied all file

Take or send the drives to a professional data recovery service - - but you may need a bank loan to pay for such a service.

Hi there, I recently bought an IdeaPad U410. A few days later I set a User Password and an Admin Password in my BIOS.Until today I did not go back into BIOS. But since it started to bother me to always type two passwords (BIOS + Win8), I wanted to remove the first one. When I entered BIOS, I could strangely only modify the User Password. There was no way to access any other option but the system time. I found that quite strange, so I tried to change my User password, because I thought, that I would maybe get access to the other options then. Well, that was not the case. So, I thought, that I could at least get rid of this password now, and entered nothing as a password.Problem now is, that when I rebooted my Notebook, it still asked me for a password. And it neither takes my "new" empty password, nor my old one, nor the Admin BIOS password  I really need this notebook to run! There are project data on it, that I need for my thesis  Can you help me with that? I guess it must be the anti-thief protetion, since it always tells me that the system is being locked after 3 wrong retrys

Answer:Guess my Anti-Thief-Protection locked me out..

Hi tmo, welcome to the forums,

Please ensure that you are entering BIOS from a "cold start", system turned off.  If your new password contained special characters e.g. ?*&% please try entering the password without these characters, just miss them out; even though they register when creating the password they will not be accepted by the system as part of the password.

The Hardware Manual for your system also contains information on the different types of passwords, further information / discussion about circumventing passwords is not allowed in these forums and will result in the thread being locked or removed.  If you contact support they may also be able to offer further advice.

When I click on setup.exe, it tells me that it cannot find d:\setup.exe when I try to install from the cd. I copied the cd to my hard drive and it tells me the same error when I try to install. It doesnt matter where the setup file is, whatever path I try to use, it continues to tell me that it cannot find the setup.exe file. What gives???? Anybody please help....... Thanks.

Interesting story below about a guy who logged into his stolen laptop to help cops get it back for him. What program do you think he had on his laptop? I use LogMeIn on my PCs, but any time I log in to one from another a box pops up saying the computer is being shared by a remote user... so a thief would know if I were trying to track him down.

Suggestions?
WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) -- A laptop thief got caught -- after the computer owner tracked him remotely.

Jose Caceres said he used a remote access program to log on every day and watch his computer being used, and then tipped off police, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old male suspect.

Caceres, 27, of White Plains, said his computer was stolen in early September when he left it on top of his car while carrying things into his home.

His first efforts to figure out who stole the laptop by logging on remotely were stymied, Caceres said. "It was kind of frustrating because he was mostly using it to watch porn," he said. "I couldn't get any information on him."

But then the suspect typed in a name and address to register on a Web site, and a few hours later, police caught the suspect.

The man was charged with grand larceny, said police Lt. Eric Fischer in Wednesday editions of the Journal News.

I cannot get rid of this pop-up warning. I have done several scans: AVG, MalwareBytes, Stinger – each has found and deleted files, and I have continued running them until they no longer find anything – yet this pop-up warning is still here. (I do have some of those logs saved, if you need them).
It is the same pop-up warning, but one of the four messages listed below appear on the pop-up, however, choosing Yes or No on the warning always results in opening the same page: http://www.msonlinedownloads.com/review/compare.php?cid – which appears as an antivirus software comparison page (compares McAffee Plus 2008, McAffee Home Edition, and Symantec Norton 360).
I have a Gateway computer – running Vista Home Premium.

Since my other problem was solved i thought it better to make a new post for this although likely related still different issue. As stated in the title the video won't play but if i go into the 2nd disc i can play the audio from the files. The video's are in an .avi format and i can open them with windows media player classic. I have the CCCP codec pack which should let me play most vids. If you need more information just ask though I'm not sure weather to reply or edit this post. I know some files can be fixed by having a program change it's format or try to fix the data but I'm knew to dealing with video files I don't know if this applies or not and if it does how do i go about it.

Edit 1: Well my google search has found a site with a thief FAQ that seems to cover all of my issues and then some. Will post the link for all your thief issues.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031

Answer:Solved: Thief gold movies video won't play but can get audio

Well replying to this so others can fix their old game movies that may not play. I tried everything on the previous link and they did not work but I have about five minutes ago fixed it. I went and played other old games so hadn't been looking into this for while. The page that was discussing it is

http://social.answers.microsoft.com...a/thread/09ad3325-ef04-4f32-a888-522703e9dfb8

and the link that had the needed codec is

http://www.cucusoft.com/codec.asp

It's the last one and works for IV50 video types which seem to be "retired" by Microsoft. Hope this will keep others from having to deal with this later on.

Edit 1: Well the movies still won't play in-game any idea's on that? I can still just pull the game down and watch the videos before each mission but it drains some of the fun out of the game.

Edit 2: Yes i have tried all the compatibility settings. I did get the movies to play in game by reinstalling the game but now none of the missions will load I'm looking into that now. When i first got the movies to play there were these multicolored lines screen when loading most area's of the menu. As for the missions they "load" in the mission briefing then when it tries to render it the screen stays black. Ok found a fix here http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75031#hyperthread

I seriously think I got the omega virus or something. I have no idea how things got this badly. I seriously don't even do anything! But somehow I got the nastiest malware I have ever seen.

This is very nasty stuff. First of all it makes it so every single one of my banners on ANY website all advertise for Viramax (penis augmentation). Second, it makes it so none of my Antivirus programs can update. Third, it spams pop-ups. Fourth, it redirects me when I do google searches. Fifth, it will not even let me go to the download page of some Antivirus/Firewall programs. If I try to download Zone Alarm I can't do it. It just tells me there is a page load error. Oh and Sixth, It will not go away! I have done countless Spybot and Adaware scans and have found myself every five minutes redeleting the same "cookie" infections. They just keep respawning. I have also tried installing several antivirus programs that boot from a thumbdrive. (I updated them before I booted them up on the infected computer) and they deleted several viruses, but that apparantly didn't fix the problem.

Please help me. I have no idea how this could have happened, and it is a major problem for me. Thank you very much for your time

Hi there, a friend reccomended this site to me. I have had this thing for a while but it seems to "hibernate" so to speak. It's spyware possibly. I am usually pretty good at getting rid of infections, so I suspect this one may be difficult. I have never asked for help on a forum before so let me know if im doing anything wrong.Spybot is catching it trying to alter the startup and registry files, and immediately after this happens, Malwarebytes will pop up saying it has blocked two outgoing requests to ip's.I have run every security program I can think of, Spybot S&D, nothing, Malwarebytes, nothing, Lavasoft Ad-aware, nothing, Windows Security Essentials nothing (and useless....I have never had it warn me of anything! Okay, I made a slight mistake. I updated my block list and accidentally told my computer to block certain pages on an important site. The site is an art site where I have some art supplies for sale. I'm not pressured for time because I can still use my tablet to do what I need to do, but it's not super convenient since I'm getting old and it's a lot easier to see my laptop screen than my tablet screen.

My blocker is Advert-Blocker, and it uses master lists to block connections in my host file. The problem is, the list merely shows the ip addresses of the advertiser being blocked and not what they are... and there's a lot of them. Does anyone have a thought about how I might identify the address in the list to remove it from my host file so that it is no longer blocked?

Specs: P3 Laptop. Puppy Linux 4x. SeaMonkey 2.2 Bowser. Advert-Blocker.

Note: Even though ad-blockers are a security issue because of advertisers trying to track you and sell your personal information, I primarily use this software for performance related issues since it's an older machine so I'm limiting connections and stopping things like self-launch videos, flash advertisements, animated gifs, etc. Pretty much seeking to control connections that are resouce hungry, and the program is very effective for this. This is the first time I've had an issue.

Thanks

"A unique data-stealing trojan has been spotted on USB devices in the wild ? and it is different from typical data-stealing malware. Each instance of this trojan relies on the particular USB device on which it is installed and it leaves no evidence on the compromised system. Moreover, it uses a very special mechanism to protect itself from being reproduced or copied, which makes it even harder to detect.

What really sets this malware apart, however, is its self-protection mechanism."

The protection mechanism

The malware consists of six files. Four of them are executables and the other two contain configuration data. To protect itself from copying or reverse engineering, the malware uses two techniques. Firstly, some of the individual files are AES128-encrypted; secondly, their filenames are generated from cryptographic elements.

The AES encryption key is computed from the unique USB device ID, and certain disk properties of the USB drive hosting the malware. Hence, the malware can only run successfully from that particular USB device.

The name of the next file in malware execution chain is based on actual file content and its creation time. It is the first five bytes of SHA512 hash computed from mentioned attributes (file content concatenated with eight bytes of the creation time).

Because of this, filenames are different for every instance of this malware. Moreover, copying malware to a different place will replace the file creation time so that malicious a... Read more

Answer:Self-Protecting "USB Thief" Trojan (by ESET Research)

Webroot says "You are protected" against this very threat. However... Webroot uses the concept of trusted processes - and is default-allow for anything it doesn't detect as malicious.

I say "You are NOT protected" by Webroot's USB shield - until proven otherwise.

When I asked for proof of protection against the threat covered in the article - of course I got no reply.

Question: Ad Blocking in AOL

Hi. Firstly, this site has helped me so much to fix computer issues that I decided to join and this is my first post. Thank You for all the advice in the forums which were an enormous help and valuable resource before I became a member.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS (about to uograde to Windows 7); AVG; Superadblocker 4.6 version; Malwarebytes; Spywareblaster; Spywareguard; C-Clean & Defraggler active and installed. I browse in IE and never get any pop-ups or flash ads. However AOL is my ISP and e-mail provider and whenever I open AOL desktop to access my e-mail, I am bombarded with irritating flash ads and pop ups to the extent that I can hardly read my e-mail. I have configured AOL settings to block pop-ups but it only has 2 options for animated media 'Allow All' or 'Block only on these sites'. There is no option to block all.

Can anyone suggest ad-blocking software that would work in AOL or any other steps I could take? I don't really want to have to uninstall Active-X.
Thank you so much for your help.

Answer:Ad Blocking in AOL

Hi and Welcome to BleepingComputer,

I have no suggestions on how to stop that from happening other than maybe try an older version of AOL if it would be compatible with Vista. I say that because I use AOL 7.0 and I do not get any popups at all when using it. It works for me but I am using XP, not Vista.

Question: pop up ad blocking

If you use Firefox, you can download a useful extension from click here which you can set up to block those annoying pop up ads. After you install it and close / restart FF, in the lower right hand corner of your browser window (in FireFox) you should see the word Adblock. Single left click on this word, and it will bring up a list of all blockable scripts, images, etc etc.. You can use wildcards as part of the filter. If you open the list again, you should see this script now in red, as it is blocked. This thread was inspired by pop-ups from intellitxt that popped up adverts in German whenever I passed over 'computer' due to my visit to a german computer manufacturers website

I have used Norton Internet Security 2003 & 2004 and have been pleased with the overall package. Just installed Internet Security 2005 and have had a whole variety of problems. Support is over in India somewhere and isn't helpful. I've removed NIS 2005 and installed PC-Cillin Internet Security 2005. I've heard nothing but great things about them and so far it all seems to be true. The only thing PC-Cillin misses is the ability to block ads and pop-ups. Norton did a great job of this.

What do other people use or recommend to automatically block ads and pop-ups in IE and/or FireFox. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Question: Blocking?

I purchased Norton Firewall, and am very pleased with the item. My problem is that it keeps on telling me that certain things are trying to access the internet and other things are trying to enter my computer. How do you tell which might be harmful to connect to or is it just normal communications. Such as ( C:df\ Wild Tangent\DCC\DCC manager\DCC man. exe is attempting to access the internet. What is it? Also, C;\windows\system32\svchost.exe is trying to access the internet. I have been hit by 2 trogens already with a high security risk, but they were blocked. I have 36 different items on my computer that access the internet, I have no idea what the above files are or where they go. Would appreciate any kind of help on this matter. Don't know what to let go, cause I have automatic updates etc.

Question: Blocking MSN?

Hi,

I work in a school.

We have a Windows 2000 server,

And we have several clients on windows XP

What I want to do is to block students installing and using MSN for messages and chat... while they are supposed to be working!!!

Any ideas?

Thank You

Answer:Blocking MSN?

Use your firewall to block the block MSN Messengers Ports that it uses, 80, 443 and 21

you could deny access to the url for MSN Messenger: gateway.messenger.hotmail.com

or you could create a new DWORD value in the registry and name it 'RestrictRun' set the value to equal '1' for enabled or '0' for disabled.

Then define the applications that are allowed to be run at the key

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\RestrictRun].

Creating a new string value for each application, named as consecutive numbers.
eg

1. MsnMsgr.exe

Of course the simplest way would to be block all software installations, except for those done by administrators

Question: IE 7 Blocking

Hey Everyone,
Over the past few days my IE 7 has been acting strange. When signed into Windows Live Messenger, I click on the check email button as I usually do and IE opens up. However, now when the redirecting page comes up, IE tries to block the ActiveX and Scripts on that page. Now everytime I open my email, I have to allow it. Why would IE be blocking a site that is a file on my own computer, as you can see by the address in the address bar. Does anyone know how to make it stop doing this for this particular file/address.
Thanks.
Picture is attached

So when trying to watch videos and stuff this site pops up SOO much,

www.kevinsmoneytree.org

and its some scam BS but when you try to close it, it asks if ur sure and then again and its just SOO annoying..is there anyway to permanently block this site from opening up?

Answer:blocking certain pop ups.

Which version of Firefox are you using?

I can view the site in Firefox 3.5.3 without getting any popups (actually, I've never seen any popups at all when using Firefox). Do you mean popups or new tabs?

If you're getting KevinsMoneyTree popups while viewing other sites, your computer might be infected with spyware, or it could be the video sites that you're visiting. What videos have you had this problem with? Have you run any scans yet?

You might want to consider installing the Web Of Trust addon which gives a fullscreen warning and the option to close the page before you enter phishing/scam sites like KevinsMoneyTree.

Site details: http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/kevinsmoneytree.org

You can block the site by adding it your HOSTS file. More details here: http://allthingsmarked.com/2006/08/2...the-hosts-file and http://www.logicaltips.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=506

Question: Blocking pop-ups

Several weeks ago, I tried to download a song off the internet. BIG MISTAKE since I'd never done it before and didn't know what I was doing. The door came open and all the BUGS flew in. Heres what I've done so far:Run numerous scans on: Microsoft AntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Norton Antivirus and cleared off all reccomended spyware. Set my popup blocker higher, added numerous sites to my 'Restricted Site' and blocked numerous sites in Privacy. Ran Hijackthis and CWShredder and downloaded a recommended host file.Problem that remains: I'm still getting numerous popups that don't quite load. I get 'page cannot be displayed' and 'cannot find server' on these popups. How in the world can I get rid of these?? The web site that comes up over and over again but cannot load all the way (it gets page cannot be displayed) is www.loadingwebsite.com. Anyone ever heard of this website? If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Thanks!

Answer:Blocking pop-ups

I've just tried to access the website www.loadingwebsite.com but it came up with access denied, probably because I use Firefox and in addition strictly control the cookie rights. So I suggest you download and use Firefox 1.0.4 then use Hijackthis to create a log and post a new thread in the appropriate area of this forum for one of the experts to analyse.
