red shield with a white x causing problems, did read the read and run me first

Question: red shield with a white x causing problems, did read the read and run me first

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" When clicked it pops up a window saying: "would you like to update your security software and download registry cleaner?" and occasionally a ballon pops out of the system tray saying "Windows has detected spyware infection which corrupted the registry. It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer."

I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

again any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: red shield with a white x causing problems, did read the read and run me first

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Since I have upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, I noticed that all my folders' attributes are read only . Even if I create new folders, they are read only on creation. When I try to remove the read only attribute in the folder properties, it looks like it's removed, but when I check it again, it shows that it's read only. I tried other methods, like diskpart, and tried to take ownership of the folders, but so far I haven't found a solution.
Is there any way to fix this problem? I can create new files and modify existing files in the folders without any problem, but it's really annoying, for example Steam says it can't install games and updates, because the folder what I choose to install games is in read only mode, the only solution is to run it as an administrator. I need to run almost every program as an admin, to make them usable, or they report problems with read only folders. The OS itself is up to date.

Answer:All folders are read only, and it's causing problems

Read only is not your problem. If you read the properties it clearly tells you that read only applies to files only. The properties box will always show the same thing for folders concerning read only, a filled in a box (not a check mark.)

More likely your issue comes from the permissions that are set for the old system. You need to update those permissions for your new system.

Alright, I'd like to apologize in advance for how wordy this will inevitably get, but I want to make sure I explain the issue entirely and try not to leave out anything importance.

My system is an HP Pavilion 17-F042NR with Windows 8.1, which I purchased refurbished back in February of 2015. According to the stats when I purchased it (because pulling up the old purchase page was easier than trying to track down the stats in a lagging computer), it has an "AMD A10-5745M 2.1GHz Accelerated Processor" and "8GB DDR3L SDRAM (1 DIMM)" with a "1TB 5400RPM hard drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection." Inside the system, the hard drive seems to be called a "HGST HTS541010A9E680". I presume other details are not currently important for the issues I'm experiencing.

Aside from the occasional issues waking from sleep mode, such as being laggy or not recognizing my wireless mouse until rebooted, the only issue I had was boot looping which was solved around a year ago with help from someone else. The issue turned out to be a conflict between Steam and my network drivers, which was solved by updating the wifi adapter's drivers from the HP website. Beyond that, the main issue I've had lately is newer versions of Chrome and Firefox will crash my display drivers when playing Youtube. So, y'know, I just avoid playing Youtube on my laptop and it's no big deal; I have a smart tv that can handle it. Other than that, n... Read more

As above, I'm trying to play Prey and the game tells me the disc isn't in the drive when it is. The disc is in DVD drive d (it is a dvd), I have a physical cd rom e, and then I have a virtual dvd rom f that I don't know how to get rid of. I'm not even sure how I got it. I've been using power iso but that doesn't seem to be the cause from what I can gather. If any of you guys know of a solution, by all means throw it at me. Thanks

Answer:Prey won't read dvd to play. Virtual drives causing problems?

Hmmm. Seems odd that you have a virtual drive that your not sure how you even got it.

This 'Virtual Drive' should also show up in device manager. Find it. Click on properties. Then at the bottom where it says 'Use this device (enabled)' switch it to 'Do not use this device (disabled)'.

Let me know how the game is. Looks pretty sweet.

When I call up the task manager, the white text is hard to read against the pale blue background. Is there a way to change either the text or the pale blue background. It nice 'nuff, but not enough contrast to read.

Answer:Security screen - can't read white text very well

hmm, no white text in my task manager...

do you mean the full screen menu you get when you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL?

We could not find a solution in my last attempt.  I may not have been clear that this is malware that is causing this problem of no boot.
I am running windows 7 64
I have a highly infected machine that has caused my system to not boot -- boot into safe mode -- or boot into repair itself.
I do have a repair disk and can get into cmd.
I have attempted to rebuild and fix in cmd and the malware has somehow hidden the files completely or the Linux dual boot I put on it to attempt to fix the no boot is hiding it.
Either way it is above my head and I need help please.
I have run frst and obtained the log.
Is there somebody who could take a look at it and give me some help with it.
I am not able to read it and could make things worse if I go rooting around lol
I have seen a couple forums where this has been done but because it contains personalized fixes I can not attempt it by myself.

Answer:Need someone who can read my logs and help fix malware causing no boot

I'll report this topic to appropriate helpers.
1. Please let us know what Windows version you have and if it's 32- or 64-bit.
2. Is the computer bootable in any mode?
Hold on there....

Anyone experience with this error when they were running Vista 64bit on their PC? But after downgrading back to Win XP Pro 64bit, everything was ok?

Answer:Vista causing Disk Read Error Occurred..

I guarantee you Vista is not causing a 'Disk Read Error'. That's caused by a damaged or dying disk. Vista's services such as Indexing and on-the-fly defragmenting might cause more areas of your disk to be utilized and reveal these errors, but they're not caused by Vista.

Hi there folks!

So, I'm playing on the compy, having fun, when all of a sudden it gets real sluggish for a while (immediately after opening Steam, to be exact), runs for a bit, then BSoDs. I, being the silly person I am, did not get the code, thought "Hmmm... that's odd." and rebooted. Upon doing so, the boot sequence read the processor speed and then stopped, I assume hanging on the Auto Clock Speed detection for the CPU or RAM.
Confused, I reset the BIOS using the jumper, and got it to read all that stuff just fine, memory check, although it was only reading 500Mb instead of 1Gb, and then threw me an error reading -
Warning! CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio change fail.
Please reenter CPU settings in the CMOS setup and remember to save before quit!

Being the obedient user I am, I complied, and it did the same crash thing as before. I then proceeded to try every possible setting I could think of for CPU clock speed, DRAM clock, etc. (I didn't mess much with the advanced manual settings, since they are absolutely beyond my knowledge, but the basic ones got all played with) and was eventually able to get the thing to boot by leaving "CPU Clock" on Auto, setting "DRAM clock" to 100Mhz (apparently the default), and disabling "Auto Detect PCI/DIMM clock".

This is the only way I have been able to get it to advance past the original error, and I have completely left my area of knowledge with this one.

My machine is running... Read more

Answer:Clock read error causing boot failure?

Aight, few more updates to note.
I tried swapping the RAM over to an alternate slot on the motherboard, same problem. So I'm guessing that the issue is not which slot the RAM is in. Figured that would be the case since it ran fine before, but figured what the heck.
Also, I finally downloaded and ran Memtest 86+, and it checked out as A-Ok, but it also thinks for some reason that I have only 512 Mb of RAM and not 1Gb.

Do you think that there is any realistic solution other than replacing the RAM with new stuff? I'd love to hope that there's some obvious and simple point I'm missing, but I'm getting to the point of doubting that.

Hey everyone. I've got a buddy that I am trying to help out. Yesterday he told me that he didn't have an anti-virus program and so I told him that it was very important to have one and recommended AVG for his computer. He downloaded it, started the scan and within a few moments it had already detected a few viruses. Unfortunately, he said that his computer was constantly reading the floppy drive. What should I do? The only way to solve the problem of the floppy drive attempting to read was to uninstall AVG. I am not with him but am helping him online. My guess is that we should remove the viruses first as they might be causing the problem. From what I understand, the problem with the floppy drive started last night as he was scanning for viruses. He had to cancel the scan and reboot because of this. Eventually he had to uninstall AVG. He has Windows 2000 Pro and I believe he said he has 386 mb of RAM. What to do?

Previously, the time was in black on a white background, I believe. Very easy to see. Now, there is no separate color for the Date & Time box, and the taskbar colors don't come light enough to offset the black font for the time. How can I get a lighter taskbar color or, better, change the font color of the time and date to white, which the other items in the old systray are? I need a much better contrast to read the time, and I've tried just abt everything I could find in Settings to fix this.
Also, I'd like to know how to get both the time and the date on the taskbar. This fall upgrade of Windows 10 seems to be making things more difficult than they were.

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

This sound like a drive lens cannot calibrate properly and therefore the drive cannot read from the CD disks.

well i have run into a problem with scanning and cleaning steps: 1 a/b
on the " READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal" post. first of all i dont have a softwear antivirus program (yet) so i usually use trend micro. anyways i cannot run trend's scan in normal opperating mode. i just get errors, a AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 6.1.9844.0 Offset: 00001d90 error to be exact. after that IE restarts and im back to about blank. the virus couldent be doing that could it? then on further i cant access any explorer window. period. it also creates arrors and restarts explorer. in safe mode i was actually able to get trend micro to work and it found 22 some odd junk files (dlls i think) that i keep finding in my prossesses list. to put it this way, i have been going back and fourth between apm, the cleaner, and about blaster to remove these junk prosseses and they just come back with with what seems to be randomly generated names. back on point, i could not get symantec's online scan to work at all in safe mode. the applet (dont know what else to call it) just hangs there for along time till it come up not avalable.
im planning to put an old version of norton AV and getting all the updates the doing a full scan to see what happens. would agv AV work also? on the same note, cwshredder has come back with nothing everytime ive used it

Answer:about blank help (read read me first post above)

Just continue completing all the steps in the READ ME FIRST as best as possible. Note any problems along the way but don't bother coming back until all steps are finished. I'll include the READ ME in the steps below. Finish everything and post your HijackThis log at the end.

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your p... Read more

Tried doing a search for this and came up empty. My problem in a nutshell is that I'm having difficulty reading data CD's. I was re-installing my OS due to too much corruption of data and viruses so I'm start from a scratch in terms of OS files.

To be noted: Manufacturer's install disks used ghost to install a new copy of the OS. Had to open and close the CD drive bay a few times in order to get the final CD be able to be read and complete the installation.

What I've tried:
update driver - no improvement
Uninstall Drivers and restart - no improvement
manually download driver - no improvement
tried using generic CD Drivers - no improvement

OS: Windows XP home.
Downloaded all updates. inc: SP2
Emachine T3065
Memory: 2GB

After browsing around google for a while, I came across a similar problem which suggested the cabling might be the cause of the error. as audio/video are past through different pars of the cable than data.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can't read data cd. can read audio

Ignore the cable issue, that's unlikley to be the problem
Analog audio is on a different cable, but thats seldom used by any PC these days.

The clus here is that it was dying at the end of the install by the sound of it. The laser output may have decreased to the extent that audio only is recognised due to the better reflectivity.

Start thinking about a new drive, but you would have checked all the cables anyway one assumes?

Hey all,
Well, I had some how downloaded av.exe and have had nothing but problems. I even had AVG running at the time and it missed it some how. I used a restore point and that seemed to get rid of it, or so I thought. Unfortunately, I lost Microsoft Excel and Word. I don't know how, but the shortcuts go no where. Then today (three days later) I started getting Windows Antivirus popups again... or was it Microsoft? I forget... but I knew it was av.exe. So, I tried another restore and when it rebooted, AVG found av.exe this time. I removed it and not even internet explorer worked. I then did a full restore and this time I got Internet explorer working.
So, since the last time (a few years back) that I had a virus, you guys really helped, I came here and searched for av.exe (as it's still in the system). I found a thread referring the OP to the READ ME FIRST thread, which was what you referred me to last time too. I started following it and got to running Super Antispyware. I ran it and it found two locations of av.exe. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of where as the directions stated to reboot and then go to preferences and copy the log. Well, the program is gone after the reboot. The shortcuts are there as are the start menu items. But when I click on any of them I get a popup
"C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe'. Make sure yo... Read more

Hello all ,

I bought yesterday new dvd-Rw (samsung sh-s223 ) because the old one (old about 1,5 years)have problem with reading dvd,cd.I installed it and it is working worse than the old one.System recognize both devices but when I load some DVD it tries to read it and when it cant read it the window(or whole win 7)freeze,or new device become invisible to system till the next start up.And what is odd is that when I load on boot win 7 or Xp disk it read them with no problem!?
I applied the differnent solutions, namely removing the filters, but this does not work.
I have traveled the forum, and I think I have not found a problem similar to mine.

I have to install win 7 again or ther(s another solution ?

Any help would be appreciated .

Thank you !

Help would be much appreciated

Answer:DVD Rom will only read do I get it to read data?

No it doesnt read dvd's, but I am not really concerned about that, I dont think I have the memory anyway (64 mb ram). My old cdrom had a mechanical problem and I needed something to read disks, so I bought it from a garage sale and I downloaded the software from the Sony site. It used to function normally and read data files.

I want to format the harddrive and I need to know that the dvd rom will read my win98 disk cos it isnt at the moment. I dont understand how to do anything in file where the problem lies? Or is it in the cdrom properties settings area.

Hope this triggers something in you........I appreciate your help

Ok, on my forum one of the members asked "I just got 2 new sticks of kingston ddr400 C2.5, can I keep the old one also or do I have to get rid of it?"

Since the old stick is kingstong ddr400 C3, I said ya just put the two new sticks into the ddr slots and put the old stick in the single slot.

my mod says:
"Only issue I can see is the different clock cycles, may get read errors. try it and if it starts acting funny, take the original one out. if the prob goes away, then choose which set you want to stay with."

I disagree with him, what do ya'll think? I said maybe it would if you were changing out different brands and timings, or using a brand that the mobo isn't exactly compatible with.. In that case you'd get more than a "read" error.. Anyways, since it's using the C3 in the single slot and not along side of another DDR stick, I think it'll be fine..

btw, the member who was needing to put this ram in, put it in as I directed and all is well just like I.. KNEW!" hehe

I have some older DVD-R that I had burned data on a few years ago. My Optical Drive on my main PC can't read them. but a drive on a different PC can read them fine.

My main PC can read all regular DVDs (i.e. movies) just fine. I cleaned the lens, deleted the "up/down" registry entries as recommended. Still no solution.

the only hint I have the explorer shows that drive with a symbol of 2 people (see attachment). not sure if this stands for some group policy.

All the data were burned with a different DVD-writer in Germany (some 9 years ago). i don't think it is a region setting issue since this DVD-drive can read original DVDs from all regions. But there may be another clue?
I read about how DVD-R degrade over time... but since my other PC can read them that likely is not the problem.

The only thing I haven't done that was suggested was the realignment. First, I never dropped it (it has been in my PC for years and that didn't move). Second, it seems to read normal DVDs fine. It was suggested if re-alignment really is necessary, other things are out of whack and buying a new one may be better.
I could buy a new one, but also don't want to be defeated by the machine. and the problem coudl be related to windows....

Answer:can't read burned DVD-R, but can read normal DVD

It is possible the DVD-R may be incompatible with your drive. You can search online for a firmware update for the drive. You can re-write to a compatible DVD-R on your other machine perhaps.

My CD-RW drive broke, and Dell replaced it with a new one for free (warranty).

However, the new drive is 48x read but the old one was 52x read. Will this have an impact on anything?

Also, I have 52x CD-R's. Will they work in a 48x drive?

Answer:Solved: Difference between 48x read and 52x read?

There will be no noticeable difference on anything. Chances are that the old one rarely, if ever, actually read at 52.

The 52x on the CD-R's is a measure of their sensitivity and shows the maximum speed that they can be written. Some CD's have a minimum as well, and that is usually more important if they are "high-speed" CD-R's since they won't write properly at very slow speeds. But your CD-R's will write fine at speeds between 4x and 52x, as a minimum range, so there is nothing to worry about.

I built a PC back in January and its been running great ever since.  Never had any hangups, freezes, or other issues with the build.  Two weeks ago my computer froze unexpectedly and upon restart I received a disk read error.  I tried several tips on the internet to fix it, and eventually the HDD stopped being detected by even the BIOS.  I bought a new HDD and reinstalled vista 64 ultimate and it's been running fine for about a week.  After receiving the disk read error again I updated my BIOS and it seemed to fix the problem for a few days.  Last night it happened again.I've read that this could be caused by a bad HDD, issues with Vista, bad memory, or an overheating issue.  When I run SpeedFan and other temp tools, my computer runs at max at 45-50C under load.  My PSU is still cool, as are all of the components within the case.It starts to freeze in WoW, but at random intervals.  It might be an hour, it might be 4 hours before I have any issues.  I've also had the problem when the computer was idling in vista.  I check the temperature of the system regularly while playing my games, and I doubt that is the issue. As this is a clean HDD with a clean install of vista and runs cool, I'm beginning to think it may be a memory issue.  The following are my system components:   Operating System: Windows Vista? After burning a DVD today on my Micro Solutions DVD-/+RW I could suddenly no longer read DVDs on that Drive. I have no idea what happen. At first I thought the drive was gone, but I put a CD in it and it reads it just fine.

I uninstalled the driver and the associated programs (i.e. powerDVD etc) and then reinstalled them and then re-did the UDB connection to the computer - it auto-detected it, and then said new device ready to use (using XP by the way). Still didn't work for DVDs, just CDs. I also updated the driver - still nothing.

Under my computer it is listed as a DVD-/+RW, so I cannot understand why it won't play DVDs, just CDs. It's as if the ability to play/burn DVDs has suddenly be locked out.

Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you.

Answer:DVD-RW suddenly cannot read DVDs, can read CDs

The device manager says it's working properly.

The problems occured after attempting to erase a DVD+RW using Deepburner. Basically I burnt a DVD and then tried out Deepburner to see if it would erase the DVD+RW. When I attempted to eject the DVD it wouldn't eject- the green light just kept flashing a couple times. Eventually I had to turn my PC off and unhook the USB connection and power connection and then do everything back up and restart the computer. Finally the DVD would eject, but since then will not read any DVDs, just CD's and CD-ROM.

The model is an external (USB) Micro-Solutions 2244010 (but really a NEC_DVD-RW, ND-1300A).

I updated the firmware to 1.0A about 6 months ago. I never had a single problem with this drive before or after updating the Firmware.

I really have no idea how or why this could have happened. I can play the DVDs in my other DVD drive just fine.

Please help.

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

I'll start off by saying that I know embarrassingly little about computers (most of what I described I have done below was actually done or suggested by friends?). So please ?dumb down? any suggestions for help as much as possible. Thanks!

So, I'll first just summarize what happened and what I did. As I have no idea what is significant and what is not it is quite a bit of text, so please bear with me.

1 1/2 weeks ago I downloaded a bit torrent file, and after unzipping and opening it (stupid!) my computer crashed. I'm not quite sure what torrent it was, as I deleted it immediately, but I think it was this one:
So yeah, be very careful with this link, I think this file is the virus that completely screwed up my computer!.

After restarting my computer it was ridiculously slow, and could hardly open any programs. I ran McAfee antivirus scan, but this did not too much. Then I deleted McAfee and installed Avast instead (after some problems with getting on the Internet), which found and dealt with about 6500 infected files on the first run. Don?t have a Log or anything, but among the files of which I noted that they were deleted the most (hundreds of times?) were win32:RustNT (Rtk), win32:Trojan-324 (Trj) and win32: Gator-D (Trj).
But the problems still were not over with, for example I could not get onto the Internet anymore at all. I now installed (from a USB stick) ESET NOD32 antivirus, which found and dealt with about 50 infected files in th... Read more

Some forms of Virut are not repairable. So if worst comes to worst be prepared to do a complete reformat and reinstall. Meaning you may need your XP install disk.

Try this.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the next one.

Vista and Windows 7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.exe

* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.

This is my first time posting to this board, so I apologize in advance for anything stupid I say or do!

I went through the READ & RUN ME FIRST proceedures in the Malware forum, but I am still having some of the same problems.

I am running a Dell Dimension 8200, Pentium 4 1.7GHz, 512 MB RAM, Win XP Professional v2002 sp3.

The issue that is most frustrating is that the computer will freeze up for several minutes at a time at various times during the day. It doesn't seem to matter how many windows I have open or what programs I am using. It also seems to get slower as the day progresses.

I have attached the log files from the different tests that were run according to RRMF. RootRepeal threw an exception, 0x004eca19 and failed to complete.

I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

She works at Best Buy and had one of the Geeks look at it. The Geek thought it was a hardware problem, but I'm thinking the symptomolog points more to software issues.

The problem is it would lock up with no apparent reason on an irregular basis. It isn't a heat problem, she has it on one of those fan cooler units. I put Advanced System Care on it, and that didn't turn up anything. I also put PCTools Free Antivirus on it. I use both of these on my XP system, but when I ran PCTools on her laptop, it stopped before it got to the end. The computer continued to operate, and when I clicked the end scan button, PCTools seemed to end the scan, but I couldn't clear the program off the screen. When I tried to load the task manager either task manager wouldn't load, or it would load, but not do anything when asked to end PCTools. If I tried to access the start button, it would lock the computer.

The only thing I noticed about this that might be telling is it always stopped in the same general area of the computer, around 4,000 files in scanning Adobe files in Program Files. After running through the Read & Run Me First cleaning proceedure, the computer seemed to be cured (as I recall SAS repaired over 700 problems), but when I ran PCTools through another scan it still ... I have followed all of the instructions listed under the "RUN & READ ME FIRST" topic and it seemingly has corrected a few of the problems I am/was having, but not all of them.

I'm not sure when or how my computer got infected, but as of yesterday (Feb 9th) I was getting a popup message from my icon tray telling me my computer was infected and that I should run Spyware Removal Tools. Clicking on the popup bubble sent me to a website for a bogus spyware tool, along the lines of AdwareRemovalXP2009 or something similar. My homepage for Internet Explorer was deleted, though I primarily use Firefox and it's homepage was unaffected. My desktop would sometimes change to solid black instead of the normal picture I use. All of these problems seemed to have disappeared after running all of the programs recommended in the read me first topic.

The only problem remaining is that when using a search engine such as Google, I am sometimes taken to a random advertising site instead of the site listed when I click on a link. I have tried searching for solutions to this and this site has helped me out the most so far, thank you.

Attached are the log files for SUPERAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, and ComboFix. I will attach the log for MGtools right after this post as I can only attach 3 files at a time.

Answer:Still having problems after following Read & Run Me First

Thank you so much for all the help so far.

I have just come across a funny one.

I have a program that I wanted to install into my Win 10 Pro Machine (64 Bit) and have found that the disk can not be read by the DVD/CD-ROM Drive. I also tried it in another Windows 10 Computer (64 Bit) and it also can't read the disk.

The disk worked fine under Windows 7, in both the same computers.

The drive works as it reads other CD/DVD's.

The disk is good as it works perfect in an other Windows 7 (32 Bit) and Vista computers (32 Bit).

Computer is up to date with builds etc.

Is it that the program install routine won't run or is it that File Explorer doesn't see the data on the disc?
If the disc can be read in Win7 I'd plug in a USB Thumb drive, create a Folder using the program's name and copy the contents of the disc to it then plug the Thumb drive into the Win10 computer/s and open File Explorer to that Folder, find the setup.exe file and double-click, see if it will install that way. Or copy that Folder to the HDD and try installing.

Ok, I'm a newbie to the whole forum thing; I apologize in advance if I mess up somewhere. I followed the steps in Read and run me first, however I was unable to download and run Malwarebytes' Anti-malware. I got a popup stating that my security settings won't allow me to download the software. I do have the logs for the other two programs.
As for the problems I've been having...I tried downloading a trial version of spss 3 days ago, which is a data analysis program I use in one of my classes. Since then I've gotten many trojans, I had the red circle with a white x, but it wouldn't let me click on it and no window popped up telling me what it was. My homepage was changed and it won't let me change it back. I can't go to Internet options because access is denied. My computer was running very slow, but since downloading and running Super anti spyware it is working better. I use AVG and every so often I still get notices that a trojan is found. Many of them are .dll files. I wasn't even able to update Spybot Search and Destroy or any of the software this forum advised until I went to msconfig and found some suspicious programs like bravia.exe and disabled it. I found bravia files and deleted them. Had to rename a few in order to delete them because they wouldn't go away. I know going through msconfig is not recommended but it was the only way I could get more control over my laptop. I have returned to normal startup ... Read more

Answer:Followed Read & Run me first: still have problems

Actually your logs look clean ....You need to install Java:
Java Runtime 6

And you need to run ATF Cleaner to rid your system of the temp files.
download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Under Main choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

* Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

* Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Tell me exactly what problems you are still having.

I ran the steps. Had trouble getting SAS to install even after renaming it. Somehow I ultimately installed it but cannot run it. Spybot will only run if I right click on a folder in win explorer and select scan w/Spybot. Combo. Fix will not open. CCLeaner removed about 8 megs successfully.
The infection seems to be a hijack. I am constantly bombarded with pop-ups and am being redirected primarily to a sight called Red Orbit or something. I do not have any previous restore points that are in any better shape than what I just described.
Please advise. Thanks.

Hello,I own a VAIO laptop for more than a year now, and since a few days now my drive no longer reads DVD's. It still detects and read ordinary CD's, but when a DVD is inserted, two things can happen:- the disc starts to spin but nothing appears on the 'Computer' screen - nothing at allI initially tried using a lens cleaner but it didn't have any effects (although one game DVD did work after it, but it didn't last)I'd like to find out if it's only a problem with software/windows or if the drive itself is somehow damaged.I'm on Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) and the drive itself is a 'Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560A ATA Device'Any help greatly appreciated,Thank you

Ran into a bunch of pretty fun problems a few days ago. SpyGuardPro, Malware alarm and whole bunch of things that have made my browser fubar. Had a red circle with a white x and a yellow triangle with an ! in it on my task bar telling me to download some bs programs which I didn't. Also, when i was on the site to get help or sometimes trying to run malware removal applications, sometimes about 60 windows would pop up with http:\\\ in the address and say syntax error. Had some problems while trying to run through the read and run me programs. I couldn't download the latest java because it said bin\java-rmi.exe: old file not found. Found file with same name. Then it would reverse and send me to java help page, which was no use, error code 1722 I think. When I ran spybot in normal boot mode, my computer froze up when I tried to fix after the scan, reran in safe mode and it worked. Also MGtools would not run through all the way, stopped with a message Could not find C:\documents and settings\administrator\desktop\procdll.txt. I ran HJT on my own and tried to get rid of some stuff that was obviously malware and the last 3 BHO no name objects kept returning(I tried to fix two of their winlogon duplicates with them). Please help.
I forgot to save my logfile from avg, will rescan and post.

Answer:Ran read and run me first, still have problems

So I reran avg and mgtools so you have the logfile for avg and I could tell you what the other error message from MGtools said.
A box comes up that says:
Processdll.exe - application error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b). Click on OK to terminate the application.
Also, the logfile may be different for HJT from MGtools this time because it is after I fixed some of the obvious malware issues.

I followed the Read & Run Me First guide as well as the XP Cleaning procedure and am still experiencing the following problems.
On 1/18 I noticed an MSN error with IE7. MSN was undefined. My System Restore would not restore to a previous point. My initial steps to remove the problem included CW Shredder, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Rouge Remover, AVG AS, AVG Free and finally McAfee. I found a trojan horse Dropper agent.git. I do not currently see this issue however, I now have other problems. I have pop-ups which I haven't had a problem with in a LONG time. My monitor keeps refreshing and will not keep my settings. All other programs run fine as far as I can tell, but Spybot froze the first time I ran it and then found items.

PLEASE HELP ME??? This is my father's business computer and as he has a small business, we can't really afford to loose the data that the computer contains, even though most of it is backed up, I am afraid that some of the files I saved to a disk will be infected as well.

I have attached the requested log files.

You are violating one of the first instructions in the READ & RUN ME. Only one antivirus program should ever be installed at any time. Uninstall either AVG Free or McAfee immediately before going any further.

Then uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as rquested in step 1 of the READ ME.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Okay, so I'm new here, () so I'm not sure if this is in the right category. But, my problem is:
So I have this Sony Camcorder and I've recorded some videos using it on my Maxell re-writable cds. I've finalized the discs and all that, but when I put them in my computer, nothing happens. I go into My Computer and it shows that there is an icon showing that there's a DVD-RW in the drive, but when I try to open it, I get an error message saying:
Windows can not read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows.

I don't get this message with any other cds except the recorded ones.

I think the format part may be the problem, but I'm pretty sure I changed the format of the disks before I recorded on them. Also, there is only one disk that actually opens up in My Computer. But when I try to drag and drop the three files onto my desktop from it, one file named VR_MOVIE with a weird icon (I think RAR) does not copy and gives me a crc error. The other two (one named VR_MANGR with a realplayer icon and a bup () format and another one (also named VR_MANGR with a Mediahub icon and an IFO () format) do copy onto the desktop but when I try to play the realplayer one, Realplayer says that it needs to download new software to download this clip and then says that it cannot find any updates for this format.

These are ALL the problems I'm having right now. So my questions that need answering are:

1. Why does my... Read more

Answer:So many Problems! PLEASE read!!!

The CRC error might indicate the problem. CRC stands for cyclic redundancy check, which is a way for the computer to verify the integrity of data when it is transferred. Since you are getting this error, it means that a) the videos were corrupted when transferred from your camcorder to your computer, or the more likely scenario, b) it was corrupted when it was burned to the CD. I've had mixed results with re-writable CD's, so something to try is to burn the videos to a regular write-once CD and see if they work then.

As for RealPlayer, I wouldn't even bother with it. Try VideoLan player; it's free, it's lightweight, and I have yet to find a video file it can't play.

Hope this helps!

Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

And Click OK.

Reboot to Normal Mode.

Started 4 days ago. Numbered what order things started to happen.

1. No rightclick but touchpad pad part works. Context menus auto pop up on web or win 7.

2. Context menu on flash game website comes up automatically making it a problem playing flash games.

3 Limited keystrokes before it deletes what you type. Or a combo of hi-lighting what u just typed then deleting. Also cursor may jump to random word u just typed.
Just typing this took patience and about 15 mins on number 3 alone.

where it was found nothing is there. PC hacked? Can my documents, files be saved? Getting a new PC but I really want to save this. I really like this pc and has a lot of files and programs i like a alot.

4. When I move my cursor on a webpage random parts get hi-lighted. Even when my cursor isn't moving.

No malware or virus found. 2 trojans
thought I deleted because when I went to look in folder nothing is there.

CAN FILES BE SAVED? I really like some of the programs and files I have downloaded and installed.
Not a keyboard, mouse or touchpad error to me. Seems bigger. Truly annoying. I have the internet but things are limited in ways of typing and trying to play flash games. I've spilled things on it before nothing bothered it. No sticky keys.

Ironic thing is 30mins to an hour or so before I was on a flash game site had a very short interaction with a bigot. How do I know he flat out made statements that proved him to be one. Safe to say ... Read more

recently my drives haven't been refreshing correctly, when I load a cd/dvd then put another one in after it still shows the contents of the previous disc. I've gotten around it somewhat by ejecting the disc through the mouse commands then refreshing the drive with no disc in it to make sure it registers as empty, then I'm able to put the new disc in with it reading properly. Sometimes in the My Computer folder it'll display the drive as a previous disc and stay like that, but I'll be able to read other cds/dvds.

Any help would be appreciated.

Question: Read only problems

I don't know what's wrong here, but every folder (not file) ir permanently read only, I've tried to use cmd attrib command to clear the read only status, tried using safe mode to give everyone full access and still nothing helped. Basicly I uncheck read only on a folder, click apply, say yes to the window that comes up asking to do the same to all subfolders and files and hit ok, but when I go to properties again read only is checked again.

Answer:Read only problems

Hello SilverStrike

Did you do it this way?
At the command prompt, type
attrib -r followed by the folder path and name.
For example, to remove the Read-only attribute from a folder named MyStuff that's in the root of the c: drive, type:
attrib -r c:\MyStuff

However it is a bit different for system files
If your folder is also marked as a system folder you can do it in the same way, using the command
attrib -s followed by the folder path/name
e.g. attrib -s c:\MyStuff

I have read about this little program, but I cannot say if it is any good as I have never used it.

allright so Ive had my xp for about a year and a half, and until now Ive taken pretty good care of it. Ive removed spyware, defragmented it, deleted unused files and rubbish programs the whole nine yards, But about two days ago I noticed that everytime I checked the harddrive Its memory had lessened a little, on saturday all I had used was 10GB of memory, but today It says that Ive used 14GB of memory, I havent downloaded anything, so why this great increase of space used? I think this may have happened while I was looking for porn on limewire (get over yourselfs, you do it to.) Anyway these zip files starting popping up all over the place so I deleted lime wire and the shared files. But this didnt help, my memory is still being slowly eaten.Any idea on how I can fix this or what I can do, If you help me I cannot even explain how much I thank you, my computer cost our family lots and lots of money and I dont want to break it.

Answer:Big xp problems! please read & help!

sHaRp12...... Well for openers , I would do the following ..... Go into control panel and click on folder options. select the view tab ...and make sure you have show hidden files ticked .........then apply and ok ......Next reboot into safe mode ......once in safe mode ......Run a full system scan with your anti virus , then run a full scan with SpyBot  , then run Adaware SE and then run M/S antispyware Beta ....... Delete anything that is found .......Next go ito Internet options and delete all temp internet files  , delete all cookies and delete history .Now have a look and see if you have recoved what was lost .dl65

Question: Read only problems

Hey, I've been having huge issues for at least 4 days now with the read only feature, Spent way over 24 man hours trying to sort it out just to play a game. Problem is I can't untick it from a game and I can't play the game till I have done so.Firstly I went through everything I could think of personally to fix the issue and it had no effect, So I ended up reformating my computer and then reinstalling it, Had no effect so I done it again ^^ yet again had no effect. So I researched into it and done basically everything suggested of me. stuff like command promt with commands like ( attrib -r +s "C:\Documents and Settings\Worsbeef\My Documents\Downloads\Wow") Which should be the exact command had no effect.I then got recommended to take ownership of it which I have done so through secruity etc etc but yet again its having 0 effect, I'm completely out of ideas and seriously loosing the will, 24 hours+ just to remove a read only check is getting silly. My version of windows xp is; Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.I appriciate the help and advice.

Answer:read only problems

the read only box will always have a square in it. this means it is in a neutral state. if it has a tick in it, that means that it is read only.
