Windows 7 Read Only??????

Question: Windows 7 Read Only??????

My problem is trying to move, copy or rename files from and to certain folders (example a program folder)Windows tells me "I do not have permission to perform this action" on every action I listed above. So I noticed the folder's attributes was set as "Read Only" automatically. This problem may have been caused by a program but not a virus because i have bitdefender. So I switched the attribute off and it fixed the problem. BUT... now I need to know why the folder and other folders will set them self back to read only. Also does anyone know what registry setting to change that might fix this or a group policy setting?Attached is a dxdiag file and a process list for my pc info. Thanks in advance.[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Read Only??????

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 7 Read Only??????

The folders are not read only, it only appears they are. You just need to take ownership. Add this to the context menu to make it easy: http://www.blogsdna.com/2173/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm

Nice. I had scrutinized it hard enough already with a steel hat, so I'm still safe.

Hehe, Veesta is a beast! Most corps, even NIST, MIT, UDoD and ASUS as the largest MB MFG detests it. Not fit for mass consumption eh.

Hello there

I recently bought a DVD 9gb but my Sony Vaio FW-390 cannot read it.

MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ870BJ is my DVD drive.

I took it back to the store, he put it in his drive and he had Windows 7 installed, the DVD worked just fine!

Any suggestions on how to solve the issue?

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this
thanks

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering something...is there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back home...my guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX
C'YA

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.
Confused...

I have been trying to back up my data onto DVDs and I have tried using Nero9 and Roxio 10 and in each case the DVD burns fine, but each time I try to read it in Windows Explorer, although it lists all the data that is burned on the disk, it freezes and will not open any file type, or folder on the burned data dvd.. help!?!??!!

Answer:Windows XP does not read a burned DVD-RW disc without freezing in Windows Explorer

If there is a "Firmware" update for that dvd drive, I would update the firmware .

If it is a store bought PC, Make and model of PC

If it is a custom built PC, Make and model of DVD drive.

I'm not sure about how to fix this, but my advice would be not to use re-writeable discs anyway, especially as backups, I've found them problematic in the past.

I suggest using DVDR's (+ or - doesn't matter), ok they are only writeable once but they are more stable and they're a lot cheaper anyway (I buy 100 for ?15), and also you might consider an external HD for backing up.

In my experience RW discs are more hassle then they're worth

Hi All, I've been struggling with this problem all night and after reading countless articles and trying dozens of fixes I figured I'd ask.

I installed a fresh machine today with Windows 7, and got everything to work minus my Samsung SH-S223C 22X DVD Writer SATA Black OEM. The drive works, as I used it to install Windows 7 in the first place.

It is detected by BIOS, as well as showing up in My Computer. The problem is, it won't read any disc (ive tried about 10) including the very same windows 7 install disc it previously installed from hours prior.

So far I've tried removing the upper/lowerfilters from the registry (they werent there in my case), update to the latest firmware, ran the driver detective driver scan and update, removed the drive from device manager and restarted, and run the microsoft utilities all to no avail. In fact, I've run these all several times now.

I'm absolutely at my wits end with this, and I can't even get support from Samsung as the product is a Canadian model and they seem to only support US models. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:DVD Drive Will Not Read CD/DVDs in Windows 7 (Detected in Bios/Windows

Hi bcred

Welcome to Seven Forums
Let's try the basics - recheck the connectors, power-cable to your drive.
Is the drive listed in explorer after boot?
If you have another DVD/CD-drive lying around, you could try swapping with the Samsung - we need to do this to try and isolate whether the actual hardware is faulty. Alternatively you could try swapping SATA connectors just in case the current one for your drive has gone south.

Keep us posted and regards

Edit

Re-read your post - disregard the q about the drive being shown in Explorer

Answer:Outlook 2003: not marking read items as read

Outlook Express has a tab to fix this-maybe Outlook has the same.
TOOLS/OPTIONS/tab READ
check Mark Messages READ after displaying (add 5 seconds)

Maybe that seconds number has been raised above the time you take to scan messages. OE doesnt care IF you peek at a message-it cares HOW long you stare at it.

My CD Drive has started giving me problems.
It doesn't read all the CD I put in (Particularly Audio CDs).

I'm also unable to burn CDs as the system doesn't detect a CD.

Any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite A100-033 - ODD doesn't read all CDs but read DVDs

Hi

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" When clicked it pops up a window saying: "would you like to update your security software and download registry cleaner?" and occasionally a ballon pops out of the system tray saying "Windows has detected spyware infection which corrupted the registry. It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer."

I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

again any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Here's the problem: Burned some .jpg files to a CD on a machine running Windows 2000. Opened the CD to make sure the files could be viewed. Took the CD to multiple Windows XP machines and the CD cannot be read. Normally this locks up Windows XP.

I've tried to get a solution to this before, other than getting the tightwads in charge of the money to buy a burner for the XP machines or to upgrade the 2000 machines to XP.

Thanks!

What type of CD did you burn? Was it a RW?

How old are the CD drives and the RW disc you used?

My computer had Windows 7 on it, but the boot drive became unseated during a move and now it won't boot. I don't know where my install disc is, so now seems as good a time as any to put Windows 8 on it. My question is: If I do a Windows 8 clean install on a HD, will it recognise the files on a different HD that I put on there with with Windows 7, or do I have to put 7 back on and upgrade? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Will Windows 8 read files from a Windows 7 HD after a clean install?

Reseat the HD Drive & cables first, so that Windows 7 is booting.

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

Basically I have an issue with the boot up. I got a Windows XP Pro sp2 install disk from my friend and little did I know it turned out to be a friggin' German made version. So I install it anyways figuring it won't matter all that much. But here is the thing, I installed it and when I did the reformat it did the BSOD... blue screen. Now every time I go to install it says that I have an error... well at least I think it does. It is in German. I also went to install another version of XP and it CONSTANTLY installs the version(s) in GERMAN! I mean I put in the REAL XP ENGLISH CD and it goes to the German setup. I tried to boot into TinyXP AND Media center goes right to German. I made a boot-disk that for some reason goes RIGHT to German setup. I want to know if there is any way to completely reformat the H/D from CMD/in Windows (which I figure it can't) I have all the versions on hand and all specs of my PC if needed. Um, lets see... I tried to boot into the F8 menu but it's in German as well... I have the Boot-Disk with all the tools needed. just need to know what to do. Please help me, I am somewhat desperate. Counter Strike Source is calling me.

I know this question has been asked a lot but here goes. I have a Dell Inspiron 530s with a Core 2 Duo E6550 processor and 2 GB DDR ram. I am only going to be using this computer as a media server, running iTunes to connect to my AppleTV. What do you advise installing for my use, 32 or 64 bit? Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:Windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit 2GB Ram - Please Read

32 bit. The main reason to install 64 bit is if you have more than 4GB of RAM. In addition the 64bit uses more of the available RAM thus leaving less for applications.

However, if you plan on adding more memory then install the 64 bit. 2GB of RAM is what Microsoft lists as minimum for the 64 bit OS.

did you try booting from the Windows CD? Is your BIOS boot order set to boot from the DVD first?

On April 8th, Windows XP officially becomes an ex-product. Microsoft will no longer support it, or offer security patches for it, or provide updates for its Security Essentials product running on XP. In addition, because Windows XP will no longer be an official product, other software companies will be under no obligation to support it, and it will become progressively harder to find programs and device drivers for it.
If you're still running XP, it's a good idea to think about replacing it before April 8th, or as soon as possible after. This means upgrading your PC, or at least your version of the operating system, either to 7 or to 8.1.

Answer:If You're Using Windows XP You Need To Read This

Unless you like XP and dont want to spend loads of money updating your programs.
You need to check that all your programs will work on the newer systems. I still have computers running Win 3.1,95,98 and Me that I wont upgrade because of some old programs that I use for special jobs.

When i put in the dvd+rw windows says:

Windows cannot read the disk, it may be corrupted

but it works fine in the sony handycam.

I managed to get the files thru picture package (the program that comes with the camera) and it works except when i press the COPY DVD option, the descr. is copy the files on your dvd to your computer or another dvd, but it does not recognize the camera thru usb conection although windows does.

Also, when i connect the usb plugs, in the camera, the videos are NOT mpg, avg, wmv, etc. They are weird files i have never seen before. But there is a program that says avi player in the direcory and it can play the files and so can windows media player.

Have you tried a system restore to a date prior to installing the junk?

Otherwise, Click here and download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

i have to 52x CD burners one internal and one external usb. with both i can boot off a CD. when windows loads i can see both Roms neither of them have errors in the DM. When i put in ANY kind of CD it just registers as a blank CD that cant be burnt to. i know for a fact that it is not a hardware problem.(because i can boot off them). i have windows xp pro and sp2. its also a fresh install of windows.

has anyone ever dealt with this of know how to fix it?

Answer:Windows Won't read CD's

Does XP recognise that the drive is a burner ? To check, right click the drive in My Computer and select properties, you should see the drive properties window pop up, is there a tab that says Recording ?

Right now, I am currently running 32bit Windows Vista Home Premium. My computer is an AMD Phenom X2 Quad-Core 9550 and I have 6gb of memory and it originally came with 64bit Windows Vista Home Premium. Unfortunately my hard drive had to be replaced and FutureShop decided to install 32bit. So yes my computer does support 64bit. When I pop in the DVD, it says: The version of this file is not compatible with your version of Windows blah blah blah. Ok, thats fine. I'll do a clean install.

So I try and reboot my system. I set the bios so that my DVD drive is first (SATA DVD drive) and it doesn't detect the Windows 7 disk and doesn't say to press to continue or something. I tried the disk on my Asus laptop and it detected fine and said press to continue or whatever, but my laptop isn't 64bit compatible so I didn't install it. After trying this, I figured it could be the DVD. So I burn another copy but slower (4x) and still no go. I put in my old windows XP disk into my computer and it detects it but then I try putting in the windows 7 disk and it doesn't. Please someone help, I've tried using an old IDE DVD drive that I had and still nothing. Disconnected all the USB ports. Even tried running the windows 7 disk while the hard drive was disconnected. Still doesn't detect it. My computer is HP.

Where Windows 8 Keeps ...... Everything!

This isn't a tutorial -- It doesn't tell you how to do any particular thing.
I've just put together all the bits and pieces on every location in which apps
are stored, displayed, or accessed. The last part -- "The Sources" -- is what ties it all together,
and attempts to answer some of the questions that have been thrown around (largely by me)
regarding the system folders, many of them hidden, whose contents are used as the contents
of the display elements of Windows 8 (Start Screen, Desktop, Taskbar, and so on) --
in other words, the "Sources" of those display elements.

(1) THE DISPLAY ELEMENTS: These are created internally by the system for you to view and use.
They can be used to launch apps, and in some cases to pin or unpin them.
The Metro Start Screen shows just those apps that have been pinned there.
The Metro All?Apps Screen shows all apps.
(Well, almost all. It apparently doesn't show the "Administrative Tools.")
The Desktop shows just those apps that have been moved there or created there.
The Taskbar shows just those apps that have been pinned there, and your toolbars if any.

(2) THE TOOLBARS: You can create and add to your taskbar any of the following toolbars.
The Built?in Desktop Toolbar, which has already been created for you, shows the apps on your Desktop,

Are both CPUs the exact same model? I've found some info where Device manager lists 8 cores/CPUs that are the same, but you only have four accessible if the second Physical CPU is not the same model. Are there BIOS updates available for your motherboard? Check and see if there are release notes indicating changes to multi-CPU OS support.IKt might even be necessary to do a clean Install of Windows 10 in order for both Processors to be available.

If I do a file backup on windows 7, can windows XP read it, and then restore those files onto the Windows XP computer?

(not system image, just a backup)

Or do I have to manually copy and paste the desired files onto an external HDD and transfer them to Windows XP?

Thank you for your time.

I don't think that Windows 7 can read backup files from XP...not sure the other way round.

Before you attempt to install Windows 7, it will save you a LOT of grief if you do some homework beforehand.

If you have a big box system ie Dell, HP, etc; then go to the web site of the system maker and check for driver support.

If you have a custom build, then go to the board maker's site and do the same.
As an example, nvidia is NOT releasing driver support for the older nforce chipsets. Intel is NOT releasing support for the 9xx series of chipsets. If you install Windows 7 and there is no chipset driver, then you may end up with some things not working, etc.

If you have older hardware ie printer, scanner, sound card, etc, then do a search for drivers.

While it is possible to hack the driver files to use a vista driver, it is somewhat involved and will cost you a LOT of cash unless you can edit the driver files yourself.

Answer:Please read BEFORE you install Windows 7

Are you sure, I just checked for the 910 and 945, W7 drivers are available for download at Intel

Hi everyone

I'm a bit of a novice but I decided to upgrade my computer and would love some advice please. I am currently running windows Vista 32 with an Hd and decided to upgrade to a SSD with windows 7 professional 64GB using a clean install.

I have watched a few videos which suggest you just plug in your new Ssd, unplug the HD and boot windows from cd/DVD and install onto SSD. I tried this several times and every time it did not recognize the boot disk. If I plug my original HD in and reboot using the disk- it is able to recognize it and initiates the installation procedure. I am hoping to replace this HD so not sure how to get this to work.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:New Ssd and windows 7. Won't read disk!?

Can you clarify that the DVD boots up and attempts the installation? What make of SSD is it?

Microsoft knowledge base article #884130 lists numerous software programs that may not work properly after you have upgraded to Windows XP SP2. The problem seems to be connected with using the Windows-based firewall. My suggestion would be to disable this firewall(which I do anyway) and use a third-party firewall.

Alright so I've had this gaming windows 7 computer for quiet some time. Unfortunately, the computer keeps crashing out of no-where. And it's usually when i'm gaming. When I start it back up, It has an error saying "Hard-drive will not read" or something like that. Right now, It's in the shop getting fixed by professionals. Does anyone have any idea what is causing my gaming computer to crash while in game?

Answer:Driver won't read from windows 7

If you already have it being looked at in the shop, then it doesn't really need explanation here, and we most likely won't be any better off figuring it out than those who have direct access to the PC. Given that you were given errors about the hard drive, then you most likely have a drive controller (motherboard) or drive failure. Again, one can't tell with just word of mouth. Data is necessary in order to ascertain cause without just going on complete speculation (if one can even call it speculation).

I burned some files on a CD. AVI and DivX files. And the computer used to read them fine when I put them back in the CD-ROM and played or copied back to HDD.

I recently did a reformat on both PCs and installed all the same software back on the HDD. But when I put the CDs in any of the ROMs on either PC no files show up in the drive. One says that the CD may be corrupt or Windows does not recognize it. I dont understand. I dont have this problem with any other CDs, even ones that I have burned. Only ones with DivX or AVI.

When I try to manually open the drive in My Computer, it opens up fine. Doesnt say Please Insert Disk. Just doesnt show the file. I tried showing hidden files bo no go.

Does anybody know what may be the problem?

You might need a UDF reader - how where the disk originally created (Nero InCD?).

Or you could try an laternate player such as VideoLan Player.

Roxio UDF standalone reader - this might work on anything except Nero InCD disks (if I recall, Nero had some proprietary SW back then..... but that was a long time ago)

My computer has suddenly and without warning become unable to read or write a DVD on either the built-in player or an external one, both of which behave identically. When I try to open a DVD which plays perfectly on my laptop, I get a screen showing files ready to be written to disc with a file named "desktop.ini" on it. When I try to write to a DVD I get a message that "Windows was unable to complete the format". As I said, I get the same results on both DVD players which pretty well rules out a hardware problem. I would do a system restore, but in a classical catch 22, windows refuses to open system restore even when the computer is booted in safe mode. No improvement after running the SFC/Scannow command or scanning with Regcure Pro. Deep scans of my computer with both Avast and Malwarebytes have failed to find any virus. Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its physically impossible for hardware or a hardware related problem to disable UAC

Install MSE and do a full system scan, It should identify and remove any viruses it finds (MSE has the best detection rate atm) http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

You can also use System Restore for restoring Windows back before you obtained this infection, It might also be wise to replace your RC 7100 version before it expires shortly

Hi everybody, I've been having a problem I was hoping someone here could help me with.

I recently installed a second hard drive in my rig and ever since then Windows will not recognize my SD cards when I plug them in through an external USB reader. Cards of all sizes 128mb, 2gb, and 4gb, SD and SDHC. I'm positive the cards and reader are perfectly functional as they have been used in another computer and other devices. The USB port is functional as well.

I was told there might be a drive letter designation conflict as my SD cards were usually labeled G: and then my second hard drive had the G: designation. I changed my second drive to H:, but no luck.

Running Windows XP SP3

Any help in this matter would be appreciated as its frustrating me to no end. Thanks!

Answer:Windows won't read ANY SD Cards.

What type card card reader do you have? Is it showing up in 'Device mangager? Can you enable/disable from there? These card readers usually take more than one drive letter for the multiple slots they have. H: may be one of those also. You could try renaming the HD to X or something on down the alphabet.

You could also try disconnecting the HD, plug in the reader and verify that it still works as advertised. At this point go into disk managment and reassign those drive letters.

I am sorry if this subject has been posted before. No matter what disk i put into either the CD RW or CD ROM drive I get this error message "Windows can not read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows" this started all of a sudden. I have taken out the drives and installed different ones and I get the same message. I have also taken the drives that get that error message and mount them in a different PC and they work just fine. I have seen this posted at other sites but I don't seem to find a fix. By the way disks work fine in other PC's

Hi
I was hoping someone could answer this problem for me..

My notebook came preinstalled with windows 8 standard and now I am trying to do a clean install of windows 8.1 pro. i have a legit valid key and MS has confirmed it, but when i install using this key the product ID is different then the product ID for the key..

I have tried installing via usb and replaced the install.wim file which was meant to work but it didnt, after install its still showing up with the same product iD and phone activation numbers, i also tried adding a pid.txt file with my key and even though it installed 8.1pro without a key, again the numbers were the different to my product ID and phone actiation numbers were wrong.. this key which is valid will allow me to use during install, but after install i run command slui 3 and then try input in the 8.1pro keys but it says key is invalid even thought its valid and been confirmed by MS.. i then tried another legit win 8.1 pro key and same thing it says the key isnt valid..

i need to work out how to by pass the bios key so i can use my own key..

the install does install 8.1 pro with no probs but activation wont work.

I spoke to MS and they said i need to talk with support and they are not open until monday and im not even sure ill get home in time to call them before they shut, so if anyone has for a fix, its will be greatly appreciated..

thanks

Answer:i need windows to read my new key and not the key in bios

Hi there.

1) DISABLE Protected Boot in BIOS.

2) You now have a choice - leave UEFI on if it's OK - windows will boot as you've got a proper Windows installation disk -- or "enable legacy mode". if you want to use "the old fashioned method".

Note though if you boot in legacy mode you won't be able to boot from GPT disks so I'd leave the UEFI mode on -- the key thing though is you have to DISABLE the protected boot which can only be done from the BIOS settings. Usually Press DEL or F2 or whatever to get the computers BIOS menu at boot time.

BTW BACKUP the installed system BEFORE you do any changes so you can always restore if stuff gets hosed up or you need to send computer back for repair etc.

Cheers
jimbo

Basically I have a folder, it has been checked read only so all the files in it are also read only.

Now the folder contains songs, that I want to change the info of in iTunes but can't due to them being read only.

Every time I uncheck read only, hit apply, it just simply rechecks itself after I'm done. I have full access, so I don't know what to do anymore.

I tried searching the forums, but that didn't seem to do anything, so if this has been answered before please send me to the thread.

Answer:Windows 7 Won't let me uncheck Read Only

Did you upgrade from Vista and had this folder on songs then? If so you may need to take owership.
In Windows 7, Right-click on the drive and click Properties
On the Security tab, click Edit
Click the Add button and enter your username (I entered it in the format "<ComputerName>\<UserName>")
Check the "Allow Full Control" box and click OK.

So my CPU is at 3.2GHz (shown in BIOS and CPU-Z), overclocked from 2.4GHz.
Yet when I go into system info in Windows it shows it at 3.6GHz.
Its never been to 3.6 (I don't think) and I've re-run the WEI assessment, still shows 3.6.

Its not really detrimental by any means, just a bit curious.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and a Q6600, if that matters.

Answer:Windows can't read CPU speed?

Did you try looking it up in CoreTemp? It does list the frequency.

I think Windows is just reading it incorrectly. Like it does often.

Whenever I go to the Windows home page to research an article, no matter what I do to resize the screen (smallest fonts, etc.), all I get is a tiny piece of one letter that is so huge it would fill a wall!!! I have set some special visual aids in my own computer to make it easier for my near-sighted old eyes to read, but this is ridiculous!

What can I do to fix this problem? I don't want to turn off my special visual settings, because that would be a real pain. Is there some other way to resize the print at the Windows Web site?

It's because my 2nd hard drive says "access denied" when it shouldn't be. It probably doesn't recognize me as the main user, but it's pissing me off that I can't get to my library of main programs.

Answer:Reinstalled Windows 7, now won't read HDD

When you re-install the HD is owned by the new GUID (globally unique ID). All you probably have to do is take ownership. You can find the instructions on how to in the tutorial section here on seven forums.

Let us know if that doesn't help

I'm trying to add Set Station=3461 Set foxproswx=-t to the autoexec.bat file in Window 7.I've tried it though the CMD, at the C: I type edit Autoexec.bat and it says it's an unrecognized command. I type DIR /P and I can see the Autoexec.bat in the directory of c:.If I type edit Autoexec.bat at the default C:\users\Chris I get a blank autoexec.bat file but the one I want to edit has a rem already in it. So this isn't the correct file.I go to Run and sysedit and can't save the changes. I've also tried Searching for Autoexec.bat, right clicking on the autoexec.bat file and selecting edit. It opens but won't let me save. it have read write checked of for properties. I can't add any more rights even as logged in a admin. Any ideas?

Answer:Windows 7 Autoexec.bat read only

You are going about this the wrong way. With older systems it was common practice to set environment variables in the autoexec.bat file. In Windows 7 this file is nothing more than a relic of the past, maintained only for compatibility with old programs. This is how it is done in Windows 7:http://www.itechtalk.com/thread3595.html

I have an item I am donating to an auction. The charity needs the artwork for the brochure sent to them on a CDROM. They include the words "MAC format, CMYK Build, high res. image in place" in the contract they sent me.

I'm running Windows 98 SE. The files I have are tif's, and I view them with Kodak's image viewer that resides on my PC.

Can I send these tif's, which are 32 MB apiece, to the art guy? Can he view these tif's on his MAC without me altering them?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Will

Answer:Can a MAC read a .tif that I view in Windows?

TIFF is supposed to be universal and should read on a MAC if the person knows what he or she is doing. The reason I add that caveat is that the Photoshop save dialog does have a different coding for Mac and PC.

With your software limitations I would think your bigger problem would be CYMK. Jobs are usually submitted to large printing houses in CYMK because the output is usually better and a little closer to the original. But Iíve dealt with specialty shops that make plates for commercial printing and they accept any TIFF you want to send them. If the charity canít take a RGB Windows TIFF I would guess they have a volunteer compiling the brochures with a Mac and very little software.

I just read this on the Neowin.net site:

Microsoft reminded solution providers and end users Wednesday that support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) will end Oct. 10. Customers running Windows XP SP1 must migrate to Windows XP SP2 over the next 3 months or they will lose incident support. Microsoft also said it won't release any more security updates for SP1 after that date.

During its monthly security briefing, Microsoft executives told customers to prepare their migrations over the summer. "I urge all customers to have plans ready for moving to XP SP2 as soon as possible" said Stephen Toulouse, a security product manager at Microsoft. The original support end date for Windows XP SP1 was Sept. 17, 2006.
