Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)

Question: Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)

Just tonight, a folder I have within my My Music folder (containing my .mp3 files) started only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only. Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z. The folders and files ARE THERE, because if you type their full path in the address bar, they show up (and the files still play fine in iTunes).Again, if you open up the folder they simply don't appear. Even if you do a Windows Search, they still don't appear. I even tried copying this problem folder to my external hard drive, but the folders and files still do not appear! (THIS IS ONLY HAPPENING WITH THIS PARTICULAR FOLDER).I'm completely bewildered. There have been no major updates or changes to the computer...I'm sooo lost. Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!>>running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2.

Preferred Solution: Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)

Try Control Panel -> Classic View -> Folder Options -> View -> Select "Show hidden files and folders". Are you able to see G-Z then? They may have somehow been turned into hidden files and folders.

I transferred a load of pictures into a folder. The next day I can't access the Folder and, hovering the cursor over it, it shows as empty. It will not open, nor will it allow me to move it to a different drive. The drive is showing as Healthy and all other folders on that drive are okay. The moved files do not show up on a search.

Answer:Folder shows as empty but does contain files

I wasn't sure if this was the right forum, but I have Vista.

Yesterday, I noticed as I went into my folders that my "VIDEOS" folder was no longer showing up. If I do a search for a particular video, I can get to it that way, but the actual folder no longer appears along side the others. I can also get to it if I use the menu/tab at the top and click on like rebecca/videos/ and then the "Videos" folder suddenly appears in the links menu to the left but it's still not showing up on my desktop. Why did it disappear and how can I get to show up again?
Thanks

Also, if I open the folder the long way, that is c\users\myuser\my documents\downloads it opens fine, even i don't change the folder name, any ideas? I think the error is in the registry, used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall facemoods and it messed up the registry to a state that pc became useless, had to backup registry, but seems it never recovered from it lol.

Would be easy if you had a backup from before the problem. DO you have the OS dvd to do a repair install?

I have a computer running Vista Home Premium. On it, I have a folder shared read-only over the network as "downloads."

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks!

Answer:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

I have a program that uses it's own library. The path to this library can't be changed, and it's inside the "Program Files" folder. And the software itself has to be installed inside "Program Files" too, otherwise it won't work correctly (it's a new release and still a bit buggy).

Now, when I add something to this library, it's supposed to be present in the library folder. BUT Win 7 doesn't show me any files that have been created by programs inside the "Program Files" folder. The folder where the new library is supposed to be is empty. But the library is there inside the program, so it has to be somewhere.

Now, how am I supposed to backup those files if I can't access them?

Please help!

Answer:How to display files inside "Program Files" folder?

The program you are using is broken. You should ask the developer to fix it.
In reality the program is really accessing the file in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

HI there,

PRECEDING PROBLEMS, MAYBE USEFUL, MAYBE NOT:

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for downloads/updates. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray that "something has happened" and the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\,... Read more

Hi my friend gave me a HP Media Center PC m470n No mods.

I dont think anything was wrong with it, he wasn't too computer savvy and bought a new one so he was gonna trash it. So I took it and reformatted and reinstalled everything. The comp works great.

But the problem is that on cold starts after the computer has been off for a while, during the boot process it shows me a message that certain files are corrupt or missing and just restarts after that. I have to restart it a 5-6 times before it becdomes normal and loads windows XP again. I have even wiped the hard drive clean again and installed a different copy of XP and it still does that. Each time, the missing/corrupted file is different so I apologize I had not written any down. I do remember the last one to be the file NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have seen other files before too.

Once the computer is "warmed up" it boots fine and I can use Windows XP. But I want the computer to be stable so I can keep work in there.

Please let me know if you can help. Thanks alot!

Hey all, it's my first post here so apologies for any omissions or vagueness in advance. I'm running xp service pack 2 on a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop.

So, my problem is that my back up folder on my freecom 160 GB external hard drive has suddenly emptied itself of all contents. I get the "folder is empty" pop up when I hover my touch pad pointer over it and properties says it has no data.

I noticed this just after I had moved 3 mp3s from a sub folder located in the problem folder to my iPod using Floola.

"You accidentally deleted the contents!" I hear you cry; well, while it is true that a small portion of the files that were in the folder appeared in my recylce bin, when I told the system to restore them, they did not appear in the problem folder but simply disappeared permanently.

Apart from this, there is one another tell-tale sign that we have technological issue here. The folder will not accept pasted or dragged and dropped files from elsewhere on the external disk. When I try to do this, what happens is that windows explorer goes through the motions, but no file icon appears in the folder in the end. Not only this, when I try to paste the same file to the seemingly empty folder again, I get the message "This folder already contains file X. Do you want to replace it?"

So by my reckoning, the folder still has files in it; it's just that windows explorer is not playing ball.

Any ideas?

Answer:win explorer does not display files in a folder

Try a file recovery software like recuva and see if it will allow you to retrieve your files. Either way, run chkdsk or some other disk diagnostic utility on this hard drive since your symptoms could be caused by a dying hard drive.

Hi,

I am running IE8 on Windows 7 (Home Premium 64bit). My Temporary Internet Files folder is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5. I have enabled Show Hidden Files and Folders and removed the tick for Hide Protected Operating System files.

I've noticed that streamed .wma file appeared as .dat file in the temporary internet folder. I've tried copying it to the desktop and changed the extension to .wma but it will not play at all. I have the same problem in another laptop running Windows Vista. In Windows XP platform, I have no problem retrieving the streamed files as they are saved in the original file format (i.e. .mp3 or .wma) in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Please advise.

Thank you & regards

I have a folder of PowerPoint 2013 files that are songs to be displayed in church. The worship leader gives me the song list only a few minutes before they are needed so I need to find them in the folder quickly. The filenames are the title of the song. If I use the Windows 7 equivalent of "my computer" and navigate to the folder, the files in the frame you can see are in alphabetical order but move down and the order is all over the place. If I click on the little arrow in the file name column, I am offered a sorting order of A-H, and two others but not A-Z. So I have to scroll down the almost random list to find the ones I want. There are over 300 files and the list is growing.
Is there any way I can display the folder contents in alphabetical order of filename. Or is there a better way?

Answer:Sequence of files in folder display in Windows 7

Instead of clicking the little arrow in the 'Name' column, just click the 'Name' text and it should auto sort from A-Z and click again to reverse Z-A

Hello there,

I've come accross this issue and it appears as if one of my USD drives may have infected with some sort of virus/spyware which prevents me from selecting the "Show hidden folders" check box in windows xp (2 desktops and my laptop). I found this thread and noticed that the person who originally posted the problem was able to resolve it following the help from one of the moderators:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...es-186285.html

I tried this myself and no luck. In fact after deleting teh DWORD entry from regedit and entering "1" as the value, every time i go back to regedit its set back to 0 :(

I've tried AGV & McAfee scans and no luck.

I used ERD commander to remove some hidden EXE which resided in the root of C:\ yet the problem still continues.

Has anyone found any other possible fixes to this issue?

Unusual. Probably way too simple but go to "Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab" and make sure you have a check mark in "Show hidden files, folders and drives" also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Let us know if that helps and we can take it further.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello,
I'm encountering a problem on different computers.
Internet Explorer 11 and Edge are not able to open files from a shared folder located on the same computer.
For example, let's say I typed this "\\10.100.100.10\folder_1\DOC_FILE.doc" on the address bar.
The browser then shows : "This page can't be displayed".
When I display more information, the error "INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND" appears.
I have already tried to uncheck "Enable TCP Fast open" and it is still not working.
It seems like this problem cannot be reproduced on all IE11/EDGE browsers, and can be encountered on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

Hi everyone,
I've got Windows file manager app called 'Files' installed on my Lumia 1520 8.1. I connected my phone to my pc and moved a folder onto the phone. It shows up in the 'Files' list when I open that app. There are only .pdf files in the folder, and they also open correctly. What I'd like to do though, is pin this folder to my start screen. Holding down on the folder gives the pop-up menu, but pinning isn't an option. Any ideas on how I might do this?
Thanks for any help :)

Answer:Is it possible to pin a folder from 'Files' to the start screen?

I haven't found a way yet - however, add it to your Onedrive and pin that to home screen, this might be a good workaround if it suits your needs.
add file to desired OneDrive location/or folder if preferred.
Navigate to OneDrive app on your phone
Locate file/or folder you want on your home screen
Press and hold that file/or folder and select pin
Done :)

Hello, I have just attempted removal of the "Windows XP Recovery" virus using safe mode, RKill, TDSSK, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, followed by Spybot. I then used Unhide to restore most of my missing files. The issue I now have is that most of the programs listed under my "Start Menu" show the folder names but have no files shown under the folders in the "Start Menu". I can manually go to "C:" drive and go under the program files, find the directory for them and execute them from there or copy them manually to the "Start Menu", but that is a hassle. I am just trying to get to grips with Windows 8 and would appreciate a little help. I like my folders and files to open with one click and have done for many years. I cannot seem to find the way with this new system. Can someone put me right please?
Also I have purchased an office package, (Office 2007-it is enough for me) and there are about six icons on the start screen with it. Is is possible to create on folder that I can put all the parts in? Some bits such as Access I will rarely use and would like to put them out of the way.

Answer:Single click files and start screen folder

Open control panel, select Large Icons under View by (top right). Select Folder Options, under the General tab dot the button for Single- click to open.... then apply then OK.
As for the tiles in the start screen, right click a tile not required, select 'unpin from start' at the bottom. To get a tile back to the start screen, right click a blank space then select 'all apps' at the bottom. In the 'all apps' screen right click a tile and select 'pin to start'.

Hi.
I just reinstalled Wndows XP on my PC cos it became unstable. My PC got raped by viruses, trojans, worms and spyware. I think one DNS changer worm stopped me from using services like auto updates in most prgrames and Peer to Peer programes were alos blocked.
I managed to clean it up with Kasperkey anti-virus, Malwarbytes, Spyware doctor and MYUninstaller, and Regcure.
BUT when i cleaned it all up i think 1 or more of these programes didn't like each other and my system always frooze up shortly after logging into my user when these programes started up.
Tried a repair install, but that made it worse and PC got stuck in a boot-up-loop.

I was used to rename file and folders by clicking the right button of the mouse or touchpad set and choosing rename.
With my new Satellite L630, if I click the right button, the menu with the options does not appear.

It does appear when I right-click on ay other file or folder, but not on the start menu. I also cannot drag any item inside of the start menu.
So i cannot personalize it at all (tried with F2 already, does not work neither)

What should I do to rename and drag start menu items?

Thank you for your kind contributions,

Answer:Satellite L630 - How to rename files or folder in Start Menu

Hi mate

I assume you are using Win7. Right?

The files (programs) which appear in the Start Menu cannot be renamed.

You can rename ONLY the folders.
If you click on ?All Programs? then you should see also some folders there.
Click right on Folder and there you should see the option Rename.
Choose this and then you should be able to rename the folder?

This is the reply but I don't understand what to do? anyone know what he is talking about..

I had the same problem after installing the updates from D-Link. The folder at "C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG\" opened at startup after the install. I went into the registry using regedit, searched for D-Link and found the folders below listed:

C:\Program Files\D-Link\
C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG\
C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG\drivers\

The last two folders existed on the hard drive but were empty - of course since this is the folder that always opened start up. The correct folders are also present and include utilities and drivers and are located at:

C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G132\Drivers

I renamed the last two keys to the correct folder names of

C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G132\

and

C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G132\Drivers

I then deleted the empty folders on the hard drive.

That fixed my problem. the empty folder no longer opens at startup, the D-Link utility loads and system connects.

Tried to find the person who posted this but they did not reply can any one help please.

I just reinstalled Windows 7 64bit after a crash. I reconnected my second HDD to the machine where prior to the crash I stored all my photos and music.

The problem is that there appears to be no folders or files visible in the drive, despite it showing over 300GB of used space. See the attached screenshot for a better view of what I am talking about.

Drive F is the first partition on the drive
Drive G is the second partition on the drive

Am I missing something stupid? I'm not panicked yet, but drive F is really important to me.

Hi All-
I am looking for a way to access files in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder in W2000/WXP using DOS commands in a BAT file. The files in this folder can be viewed in Windows Explorer but are hidden when I use a command prompt.

I have attempted to change the attributes using attrib -r, -a, -h, -s, path/filename /s with no success.

Does anyone have any information or examples of BAT files/DOS commands that can accomplish this.

Thanks

If you would have asked me this 4 years ago, I could have given you my script that deletes those files, no matter what user actually runs it.

You should be able to download deltree.exe (or is it .com) and then use that to deltree /y *. within that folder.

Another thing to try is use:

dir /as /b > temp.txt
then use a FOR command to parse out the desktop.ini file.

Got a problem with something on my pc which is adding large numbers of image files to my Progrm Files folder which are not large in themselves 4kb to about 300kb each), but I recently cleared over 2000 of them! obviously it's slowing down my system, but I can't find where they're coming from. A typical name is IMAGE79 129x99, they're mainly SPJ (??) files with the occasional BIN. I cleared a load out of the folder but it seemed to repopulate when I did a restart from shut down. Anyone got any idea what's causing them?
Also, in my Windows folder there's a file called jknradee which is a system file of 1kb. It's been there since 2007 but I've not noticed it before - anyone any idea what this is?

I run a system recovery, and ended up having my recovered files in C:/System Recovery file folder/C/ folder. However, I do not know what to do with them. And I cannot open some of those files either. Also, I am supposed to re-load all programs but that folder contains a Program file directory. Question is then, how do I finish the recovery process? I am running Vista, and already did all updates as required.

Hello.
I hope that someone can help me with my problem. I a lower-intermediate on a computer.

I have my tower pc on constant all day- to record a streaming IP Camera from my work.
Initially, I saved these files into my docutments- which they would save as .avi files, and after every several days I would delete them as they would take up ALOT of space on my pc.

My pc is 250GB in size, and usually it would be about 80GB full before I had the IP Camera.

Just recently, I noticed all of the IP Camera avi files seemed to have disappeared from my documents if I went directly to the folder... BUT I could still see them in documents when I was choosing a location to save the recordings.
Upon right-clicking the avi files in the latter, the files would be of no size and wouldn't play.

Now my computer is 210GB full in the matter of a week.

After a while of fiddling about trying to find if the files were 'hidden' or somewhere else, and my techy friend had a look as well, we have found that it is the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder that is 118GB in size, but when I open the folder, there is Nothing in there.

Please help!!!

Answer:Temp Internet files folder is 118GB full, but no files???

Cleaning up temp. files is no problem. Use this for starters.
Disk Cleanup : Extended
Ccleaner is another little program that can do that. I recommend not using the registry part of Ccleaner. TFC bYy Old Timer is another good little program that works for such things. After your temps are clean reboot.
What would bother me the most is how did these files get put some where I didn't put them. I would run from the cmd. prompt/admin sfc /scannow. If System File Checker finds problems run it 3 times booting after each time.
What security do you have on your computer and have you run scans?
Please fill in your System Specs.

I've tried copying it to the desktop and change the extension to .wma but it will not play at all. I have the same problem in another laptop running Windows Vista. In Windows XP platform, I have no problem retrieving the streamed files as they are saved in the original file format (i.e. .mp3 or .wma) in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Please advise.

Thank you & regards

Hello! Thanks for looking into this thread.

To make a long story short, I have a new HDD with not much on it, and I have an old HDD with all my other stuff on it. :)

Some of that stuff is located in the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. Game saves on online gaming sites such as Armorgames.com etc.

It allowed me to copy from the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder onto a USB easily and without trouble. Whereas when I put my USB on the other computer, and try to copy them onto the Temp Internet Files folder of my new HDD, it just does not give me the option to.

I've looked into this a bit, and have discovered that there is no physical folder. I've gone to where I am supposed to, the Document Settings -> Local Settings ect. and it's not there. I guess that's the technical reason why it won't let me copy files to there, because there is no physical folder.

What I am asking is: Is there a way to copy files 'TO' the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder?

I emphasise the 'TO' as I've only seen information on google in regards to copying files 'FROM' the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder.

I hope you folks can help me out on this one. :)

Cheers,

ooeJack

It is not that easy as IE stores TEMP file is multiple locations.

They could be stored in user temp files or in SYS files

I know it's the UAC that's restricting me from doing so. Am using 7-zip, and the only way I've found for moving files to program files, is by extracting them on my desktop, then move it over to the folder inside program files. What am looking for, is a way of extracting them to the program files folder right away?

Edit: Am mostly using the right click menu. Right click-> 7-Zip -> Extract and so forth...

Answer:Unable to extract files to program files folder(UAC).

Hi Nitrius,

This is a security feature in Vista that will not let you do this from any other account except while logged on to the built-in Administrator account.

Hello,
I am unable to write/modify/replace files in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folders, we have folder that is placed in Program Files folder, lets say MES folder
we use Active Directory System and all user take file from FTP server if there's Program's Update from System that I make, so new file/files will replace old file/files in MES folder, it was work smoothly in Windows 7 Pro, but not in Windows 8.1 Pro
the things I already do was :
1. Change User Account Control Settings to Never Notify (lowest)
2. Turn Off Windows Firewall setting (Domain, Network Location, Public Network)
3. Change advanced security add local user for Full control, modify, read and execute (to take ownership and grant full control permission of the folder and all contents in it)
I Know from forum it must be about user security issue but this 3 steps still not change anything
How can I defeat this?

Many thanks.

My girlfriend called and complained to me that all her files are gone on her computer. She explained that the black cmd screen came up saying that files were being deleted. I assumed she had a virus and there wasn't a whole lot that could be done to get the files back. However, when I randomly looked in the Windows folder, I noticed that all the files were missing from there as well. This is strange to me as Windows was in fact running without fine (minus the missing files). All the programs work fine, but all the folders show up as empty. I went into folder options and changed the option to show hidden files and still I got nothing. I also used the xp cd to run chkdsk /r and it came up with a BSOD Stop error after trying to boot into windows. I had to run fixmbr to get Windows up again. Maybe the problems are related. Do you have any ideas on what this might be?

Answer:Files (including windows folder files) not showing up.

Update: The files in the Windows directory seem to have come back. Not sure how that happened, so now I'm trying out some file recovery software to see if I can find anything.

My Win10 Home is regularly updated by MS. After a recent update I find I am no longer able to update or completely remove applications.

An example: Firstly, I am logged in as an administrator. I recently ran a program that informed me that an update was available. I opted to download and install it. When the install ran, it generated the following message:

"<filename in C:\Program Files (x86)\filename.exe>

An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory.
MoveFile failed; code 83.
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

Click Retry..."

I tried first running the install program as Administrator, but the same error is generated. The problem resulting from these attempts to update is that the application no longer runs, probably because some critical files have been deleted/moved/renamed pending newer versions being installed.

I then tried uninstalling the application but the same problem occurs when I run the installer. On checking the folder concerned I find that a number of files still exist. I then attempted to delete these files - the delete operation proceeded without error but the files still remain.
On checking the security permissions on the folder I find that ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES, ALL RESTRICTED APPLICATION PACKAGES, CREATOR OWNER, my login, Users, and TrustedInstaller did not have Full Control. I attempted to set this on these folders, and was successful for all except CREATOR OWNER, but each attempt ge... Read more

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a desktop PC. I download pictures, and rename them using the rename process in Windows Explorer. When I rename pictures in the folder, they'll have the name like pic (1) pic (2) pic (3) and so on. I can rename pictures until I reach pic (10001). At that point, Explorer no longer automatically increments them. The renaming status bar turns red, and an error message says: "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder". I am however, able to manually enter numbers higher than 10001, so I'm not sure what the error message is referencing.

Is there a registry entry, or environmental variable that I can increase the value to be greater than 10001?

I installed WinPatrol and received a message that several startup programs had been disabled. When I checked, I noticed a folder in the User folder, XLDEF. It has a start.cmd, setup.vbs, start.vbs. There are three .DAT files. Two appear to be a compiled data and the other, IULEJTLO.dat, appears to VBS script. In addition, this folder has 581 files, starting with random numbers and random extensions.I think this may be a key logger but no antivirus is identifying it.For obvious reasons, I do not want to upload these files until the proper people ask.For now, I have changed the name of the folder, disabled the line in startup.

Answer:Found XLDEF folder two VBS scripts, 3 DAT files, over 580 files

There the way to solve it ?

Answer:Very slow to show files in folder with many files

With that many files you would expect it to be slow as it has to read every file if your displaying thumb nails show details would be a bit quicker. Once read it will cache it for a while so will be quicker next time. Your only option is put them in folders sorted some way so there is not do many to read

DXSetup.exe is a standard installer that independent software vendors (ISVs) can use to install the Microsoft? DirectX? 9.0 redistributable runtime. Hi, Since you have an un-updated system, no Service Packs for XP installed, the going will be a bit tough for you.

You need to shut down the rogue running processes and this is hard to do, darn near impossible sometimes...and run your removal programs from Safe Mode. You may also have to physically disconnect the computer from any cable or DSL modem by taking the network cable out of the port of the cable modem> during the fixing...if this is the only computer you have, you will have to plug the cable back in of course, when you check posts or your email for the TSG reply notifications....You should try to limit the Internet use and you may be able to push a button on any cable modem that turns it off> again, you have to turn modem back on to have access.....
To boot to Safe Mode> tap the F8 key when the computer restarts, when you first see any text...tap F8 several times quickly, when you get the startup menu select Safe Mode...and hit Enter once..give it plenty of time to reach the desktop. Then>

Hi there first time posting although I have visited your site many times in the past..I'm running windows 7 x64 localized to Greek and with Greek display language..The core language is English and I installed Greek through windows update..
Recently I came across a problem that pretty much is described by the thread's title..As a result the program files folder is displayed in English instead of Greek..Other folders like users and program files (x86) are displayed in Greek..
I've done some research and someone was suggesting that the problem relates with the desktop.ini file in the program files folder..In that case desktop.ini was missing and the problem was solved by creating another one (mine is: [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourseName=@%SystemRoot\system32\shell32.dll,-21817)..In my case the desktop.ini file is not missing..
Things I've tried..First,I change the display language to English, then back to Greek rebooted no luck..Second,I uninstall Greek language rebooted then I reinstall through windows update rebooted, same result..Third,I deleted desktop.ini file from program files rebooted, still English program folder..Fourth,I used system restore and I selected a date before the problem occurred and then I decided to ask to this forum because guess what the problem was still there ..That was truly my last resort..
I know it's not a big problem but it's driving me crazy ..So any help would be hugely appreciated..Thank you in advance

Answer:Program files folder is in different language than display language

It seems to me that it would have to stay English (or the language the coders named it) as the programs look to those folders and their exact names/wording for files to use. If someone made for example call of duty then translated duty to Greek and the code looked for duty, it would only find the translation and it would fail to find the thing its looking for.

I have no info to back this up but its my theory as why things like documents can change but not program files folder names.

I have a very strange problem but thought perhaps someone could help. I am running Microsoft XP Professional 64-bit Edition which likely makes my problem even more obscure. Recently when I restarted my computer Windows would get to the desktop, but the taskbar, start menu, and systray would fail to load. What I mean is that the desktop and icons would show (but could not be opened) but the task bar would simply display as a solid blue bar. When you placed the mouse over this solid blue bar the mouse would transform into that hour glass thing. Note: By blue bar I don't mean the standard task bar but rather a two-diminsional bar which was probably the taskbar failing to render.

What I Did and Strange Result:
1. In an effort to save my "My Documents" folder I booted into safe mode (onto the administrator account) and copied the folder to an external harddrive. I then deleted the "My Documents" folder from my normal account.

2. In a last ditch effort I did a normal restart and surprisingly Windows loaded after rebuilding the My Documents folder. I then started copying my files back into the "My Docuements" folder. I then restarted Windows and poof, I was back to Windows not loading properly. I then deleted all the files in the My Documents folder and Windows loaded properly again.

3. I then tried copying a couple files back to My Documents and Windows failed to reload. I thought I might have a virus in a file that was in "My Documents&qu... Read more

What could be the reason?

First off, I have Windows XP with SP3 and BitDefender as an antivirus.

Anyway, I'm not sure when it started, but it was at least a few weeks ago. All of a sudden my computer got infected with a bunch of viruses/trojans. I'm pretty sure I got rid of all of the viruses/trojans but I'm not sure. Anyway, I dont know if it has anything to do with it, but ever since then on startup this folder (mentioned in title) C:\Program Files\Common with two "helper" files in it keeps popping up. It's really irritating me! I followed the "READ & RUN ME FIRST" and in the process some of the scanners deleted the two helper files (helper.dll and helper.sig) but the Common folder still opens on startup!

How do i get rid of this??

I'll attach the logs to the scans.

Answer:C:\Program Files\Common folder with helper.dll and helper.sig files on startup

more of the logs.

I've attached logs from both when my computer got seriously infected and from when I went through the whole "read and run me first" post yesterday.

I need some help. I have about 5,000 songs, about 2,000 of them are M4a files. WMP 11 will play these songs The problem I am having is they won't show up in my Library they show up as other media, I would like for them to show up in my main library with the rest of my songs. Is there a way to do this or do I have to convert all my M4a file to Mp3 files to get them to show up in my main Library?

Thanks for the help

Answer:M4a files shows up as other media on WMP 11

Add http://wmptagext.sourceforge.net/

Then WMP should allow them to be added to the library.

My HD crashed on my laptop. I have a windowsimagebackup saved on my desktop. My Laptop is Windows 7 32 bit and desktop is Windows 7 64 bit. I installed new HD and loaded windows 7 32 bit back to laptop. I can't get the windowsimagebackup to take when going to disk management and attaching VHD. The virtual drive gets nothing saved to it. It creates the virtual HD but the drive is still 100% available. I have tried moving the ImageBackup to laptop HD and attaching from there as well as from an external and also through the network from the desktop where it was saved. It's about 180 GB.

I have also tried going through system recovery and locating it through there to restore the system image but it never is able to locate through any of the options even when doing advanced and typing in the network location. It keeps telling me network path not available or something like that even though it is correct.

Can someone please help. This is very frustrating. I have read I don't know how many blogs about VHD issues and nothing has solved my problem.

Answer:Attached VHD shows no files

Hi Plove, welcome to the Seven forums.

To restore a system image, you do not attach it as a virtual HD. Please see this tutorial for instructions on how to recover your computer using a system image created with Windows Backup: System Image Recovery

I recently got a virus and had a stick of ram go bad at the same time (bad luck). I decided to scrap the 4 gigs of ram and ordered 8 gigs. This meant I needed to move from 32 bit Win 7 to 64 bit. I wiped the partition to completely remove the virus and installed 64 bit. I realized that Windows Explorer (under "Computer") was showing the correct size of the drives and used space but if you "open" the drive to see the files and folders there is nothing there: "This folder is empty". I have a Ubuntu Live CD and can see the files there, so I am sure the data is still there but I can't get to it in windows 7. I installed and reinstalled drivers for my motherboard but no luck. I had Windows 7 check on updating the drivers for the hard drives and it said it was using the best driver available. I was sure this was a driver issued but now I'm not sure.

edit: I realized I didn't explain my hard drive situation. I have a WD 1.5 TB with 2 partitions: 250 gig (system) and 1.25 TB (data). The other HD is a WD 1.0 TB (data) not partitioned.

Thanks in advance for any help. I am at the point where I may try a reinstall. Any ideas?

The corrupt files being reported always seem to be different. Any idea if this is something that I should be concerned about?

Yes, corrupt system files, do and will cause MAJOR PROBLEMS.

Since you say you only added one program... Office 2007. then updated.
I have to assume your copy of Office 2007 is CORRUPT.

Hi guys

Just to get it out of the way, I have already searched the forum for help (and the web),
and I already found a thread in here explaining what to do
write techspot.com in front of /vb/all/windows/t-5750-Access-denied-to-a-folder-merged-with-Partition-Magic.html
(i can't post links because i'm new here)

But, I can't find the freakin' security settings in Partition Magic

I've been looking through them all "general, view, disk, tools and so on"
but anything saying security I cannot find.
Is it me or my partition magic that retarded :-S

I have to admit it's a craked version, but it didn't complain about anything when I typed the serial just -
"thanks for using partition magic and so on"

When I try to access the merged folder this is what comes up
F:\g is not accessible. Access denied.
The same thing a unformattede harddrive would say.
So is it still a security thing?
Or is it my partion magic that needs changing?

Please forgive my newbi-ways

p.s
i'm using XP home edition (from dell) if that helps

Hello I hope you can help, you have before and that was great!

I have had no problems since you last helped me but I ran a Spyware Doctor scan and found around 30,000 .exe files that were obviously some kind of trojan. I tracked them down and found them in the System Volume Information folder where I the system restore points get filed. I went into safe mode, activated permissions to get into the folder and deleted all of the files. This worked for a while then they just reapeared again!

I found somewhere that someone said to just deactivated the system restore service which again worked but hasn't corrected the problem.

I have just run another scan and it again has found over 30,000 files (around 2gb of data) in the RECYCLER folder (which I understand in the deleted files area).

Can you help me firstly get rid of them and help me find what ever it is that is causing these problems and get rid of that forever!

I really rely upon and need my laptop for work and this is seriously slowing things down.

Can someone help?!

All the files exist on a server 2008 R2 NAS shared folder. Our users can copy files from a zipped folder to another non-zipped without issue on their XP workstations.  On the new Windows 7 workstations, neither copy/paste, ctrl+c/ctrl+v, nor
drag and drop move all the selected files to the destination.  The progress popup shows progress and then just disappears without event  nor error.  The destination folder will contain some of the selected files but seldom all.    I
have been able to recreate the problem and have applied several TN posted solutions but the issue remains.  Has this been seen by anyone else?  I am not interested any third party apps or complicated workarounds being my end users are not technical.

But I have a question about the Temporary Internet Files Folder. How long does it normally keep files? I look at it today, and the first record was from yesterday morning, but nothing before that.
Has the file been deleted or is this normal?

Answer:Deleted History folder & Temp Internet Files Folder

History depends on your configuration. Anywhere from 1 day to forever ever.

Temp internet files can be delted once you close the browser, depending on your security levels.

I pinned the Files folder in my onedrive.live.com account to the Windows 10 Start menu, and also saved this folder as a favorite in Edge, which is my default browser. But after closing Edge, when I then click the onedrive.live.com tile in the start menu, or after opening Edge, if I click the OneDrive link in the favorites bar, OneDrive opens my Shared folder rather than the desired Files folder. To see the Files folder, I can click "OneDrive" in the menu bar. Moreover, after the Files folder has been opened, if I then add a tab and click on OneDrive in the favorites bar, OneDrive correctly opens the Files folder, and will continue to operate this way (the correct way) as long as I don't close the browser. When I saved my OneDrive Files folder as a favorite in Firefox, I experienced the same problem. So the problem does not appear to be related to Edge.
How can I make OneDrive.Live.com always open in the Files Folder the first time?

Answer:Satellite A300-1G5 - C:\ shows not all files

Hi

I?m not pretty sure but the ?rest? I think is the paging file size and some other important (hidden) Windows files.

So don?t be worry. It?s all ok. Not all files like the paging file size will be shown if you mark all files.

This is the method to use if you have a UEFI capable BIOS - 4 partitions will be created

Once done, immediately apply all Windows updates and necessary drivers.

Next, go into Windows 8 Disk Management and shrink you C drive to make room for the creation of your new (extra) partition:

Please note the partiton structure in my image above. This structure was automatically created by the Windows 8 installation process during a Legacy BIOS (non UEFI) installation.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to help in advance.

I am having issues on my computer. Within the last week my windows 7 has gone white and not responding to the point I have to cut power to the laptop. Also I have had 2 updates that completely fail to install KB3126587 and KB3080079 for quite some time now. I have ran sfc /scannow several times always with the same result. That there is corrupted files that cannot be fixed. I'll attach the report for it.

I have tried different things to try and resolve my issue I am having to no avail (maybe I'm doing something wrong). All the different fixes I have tried can be found on this MS site.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2509997

The methods I tried are 1, 3, 4, 5, and an attempt at 2, and 6 before I stopped out of fear of doing something bad to my computer. None of these succeeded. Some things did get fixed but not all (although I'm not quite sure what was fixed). I have searched the forums on here and other sites but figured it would be best to post my own post and not hitch a ride off of someone else's. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll do my best to provide further answers if needed.

If I click on Documents in the Navigation window (left side) I then get a list of Directories but only the first 10 subdirectories are listed and I've got a link saying Show All ?? Objects.

Is there some way to remove this behaviour?

I had a physical hard drive crash on my main drive a few weeks back (still in the process of trying to figure out a way to recover those files.) In the meantime i ordered recover disks from HP, removed the 2nd hard drive from the system to make sure it wasn't affected, and restored the system with a new main hard drive, got all the latest windows updates, etc.

My second hard drive previously held all my home movie data, mainly of my two boys as babies (they are now 1 and 3 yrs old.). Anyway, those files were on the second HD.

The problem is now when I plug the second drive into the system and boot the system, Windows XP shows the drive as blank. DiskDirector shows the drive is formatted as Fat32, with only like a 5GB partition and the rest of the drive is free space. Prior to this the drive was fully partitioned (not sure in what filesystem) using all the space of the drive. I also ran DiskDirector on it to see if there were recoverable partitions in the free space, which it said it could not find any on its 'fast' setting.

I know I didn't reformat nor repartition this drive, because i removed it from the system when i started working on the rebuild after the main drive crash to 'protect' it from accidentally being corrupted somehow.

Anybody have any ideas on what has happened and how to recover the files?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3, on AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2 GHz, 1 GB RAM machine.

Answer:Second HD Shows No Files After System Recovery

OK on the advice of some folks in another forum, I created a ubuntu boot disk, and was able to look at the second drive.

There is a folder called found.000 on the second drive, and inside it about 994 files. Those files are all labeled FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK, etc.

Are those my files? They aren't large at all so i suspect not. What should I do now?

I should add that in addition to the FOUND.000 folder, there are the files boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM, and another called ntldr.

Something like a file system monitor. Say I install, for a perfect example, .NET 3.5, and I want to see where all of the files were actually placed. This app would ideally just go "ok, all the recently installed files on the filesystem are in this location" and I could see where everything went.

Anything like that? I bet there is...

yeah I think this would be a nice addition to my arsenal of software. This would be great for combatting viruses and spyware, seeing where they put what.

After getting a couple of KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR screens my Toshiba laptop which I've had for four years, gave me a f3-f100-003 error screen.

I bought an enclosure for the hard drive and plugged it into my HP laptop, it views the drive and I was able to open it, it shows the folders for Windows, Users, etc. but it shows them as empty. My HP laptop is set to view hidden folders and files so I'm not sure if this is a security issue or what.

Both my Toshiba and HP laptops run Windows 7. My Toshiba was a 32-bit, my HP is 64.

Is there anything I can do to get my files back? I think it's encouraging that I can view all the folders and that the drive does show that data is on the disk, it's a 500 GB drive and only 23 GB was free, same as when I started getting the errors so I know it can find something on the drive.

I have tried running CMD as an admin and it will show the drive when I list all the drives but it won't let me switch to it, it just stays on C:.

Do I have hope? Thanks a lot!

Answer:Laptop HDD Shows Folders but No Files

Hi tennisnut36,

Welcome onboard.

Please post a screenshot in Windows Disk Management with your external drive plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

Please make sure that you hit on the "Show/Hide" icons in the top Menu bar to hide both Console Tree and Action Pane to present a full screen view.

Also In the Volume list on top, adjust the seperators, if need be, so that we can view Capacity, Free Space. % Free clearly.

Next, download, install and run MiniTools Parttion Wizard Home Edition v8.1.1 Free Partition Manager for Window PC | MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition

If your external drive is seen in it, select, rightclick on it and explore. Does it show all your files?

Post a screenshot.

Also tell us the manufacturer, and model of the HDD inside the external casing.

I am due to retire for the day in a few hours, but the screenshots will help others in your time zone to pursue and help.

Welcome to TSF....

If the partition seems to have changed on this drive would it be possible that the original primary drive that you did the recovery was somehow partitioned into two drives and you might not have know this. I have seen this happen before and this is the only reason I mentioned it.

You can try this and see if it works. You are going to need a Linux Ubuntu bootable disk to take a look at all of the drives in the computer - this disk works separate from the hard drive on the computer and boots without using the hard drive.

You will need one CD-R for burning the ISO file you are going to downlaod from this site:

ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/nv/ao2...tu.com/8.04.1/

Download the file:

ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

then use a burning program capable of burning ISO files to a CD-R like Nero, Roxio etc.

Once the burning is finished you will need to close out of windows and reboot the computer and you might need to set the boot order in the BIOS to CD-ROM drive as first in the list.

Once booted into Ubuntu go to Places on the top menu bar and click on My Computer and this will give you a list of all of the drives in the computer, From here you can open drives and see what is one them. If your data is there it should show up on the second drive, if is does not then there is a really good chance that the data was actually formatted during the recovery process and possibly lost.

I am a salesman in a tech department of an office supply store, and I had a customer issue stump me today. She had an external drive with lots of files on it she wanted to access. I took the drive, plugged it into a Windows 7 machine (HP quad), and all of the files appeared, no problem.

But, then I plugged the seagate drive into her new Toshiba laptop (also Win 7), and only some of the files appeared. Missing were all photo files, and many other types. I could not figure out why some were missing and some showing.

I took the drive to a third computer with Win 7, an MSI all-in-one, and behold: files were missing. Now it seemed almost arbitrary. Could it be a matter of some Windows updates not yet installed? Why would the exact same drive work differently on three different computers in regard which files were seen and accessible? None were "hidden" files.

What on earth can cause this?

Answer:Hard Drive shows some files, not all

This doesn't seem to describe a problem with the drive to me, but rather how the systems are looking at the media files.

My first shot would be to reset default file associations on her laptop.
Default File Type Associations - Restore

Some installed media programs can cause issues with looking at media files specifically.
I don't think it would be the disk itself as the files are either there or not and shouldn't be visible on any computer if they are not actually there.

A second question - was this a simple usb external or did it have its own power adapter included?

I have been having a problem with Windows Search for about three months!!! ANY TIME I try to search a drive for files THOUSANDS of unrelated files that has NOTHING to do with what I searched for are displayed!!!!!! NOT A SINGLE FILE is usually relevant in these searches when I search for ANY file on ANY drive!!!!!! I tried deleting and rebuilding index, system restore, GOOGLING THE PROBLEM BROUGHT UP NOTHING!!!!!!! but ALL THESE UNRELATED FILES keeps appearing in Windows Search keeps on happening EVERY TIME I try to search a drive for a file!!!!!! THESE FILES HAVE NO WORD IN THE ENTIRE FILE THAT I PUT INTO SEARCH yet they STILL appear in searches!!!! they are ALL familiar files, ones I've downloaded in the past but UNRELATED to my search!!!!!!

HELP!!!!!! I AM AT WITS END!!!!!!!!!

Answer:windows search shows irrelevant files

Ditch Windows Search and use Everything Desktop Search instead. It's much better than Windows Search.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/everything-desktop-search/

When opened, let Everything populate then type in your search term.

I know this doesn't help you pin down the issue you are having but Everything is an excellent alternative. I've been using it for a long time and it has been ages since I used the Windows search function.
