computer does not turn on

Question: computer does not turn on

So I turn on my computer, and it turns on, but then it stops at a windows page and the fan goes on forever. Once in a while it will actually turn all the way on, but otherwise this is the normal behaviour. What can I do to make it turn on?

Preferred Solution: computer does not turn on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: computer does not turn on

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

I use my laptop for school and, by keeping it on power saving mode, usually get through two school days without charging my laptop. Ever since I've downloaded Windows 10, (1) my computer doesn't shut off all the way when I close it, which drains the battery, and (2) every time I charge it, it turns off the power saving mode, which is really annoying. This is especially annoying when I don't notice it isn't on and my battery drains even faster. Is there any reason it won't turn off? Is there a setting I can use to keep the power saving mode on at all times?

Answer:Why won't my computer turn off all the way and why can't my computer stay on power saving mode?

Your system might have a virus, try to scan using Malwarebytes, Superspyware , Trojan-Killer. Restart your system then try to download Hitman Pro then Run it. Then optimize your system using Ccleaner. Hope this would help.

Hi, I have a problem with windows XP. Everytime I turn off my computer by clicking on "turn off computer," I receive an error message popup that states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." After that pop-up message, the computer freezes for about a minute and goes back to its normal format (desktop) and the computer DOES NOT TURN OFF.

How do I turn off my computer without unplugging the computer? I try "ctrl+alt+del" to go to the windows task manager to "shut down" the computer but..the computer restarts again and doesnt turn off. Do I have a virus or a windows explorer problem? and how do i fix it? thank you

Hi TheRealDanny.

The crash dump (a Stop 0x3B one) is not saying anything in detail about the probable cause of the BSOD).

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

First of, my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor.

But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything.

Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so.

My question, Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

Thanks for a fast reply.

Welcome Pokeman5 to the windows 7 forums.

The graphics card might be your culprit. Please update your system configuration settings under user cp so that others can maybe help you.
Usually the monitor won't stop your machine from booting. The graphic card most likely be the cause.

There is also the possibility that your power supply could be defective or going bad. Lots of possibilities.

Answer:Solved: computer beeping sounds when i turn on computer

There are three possibilities here, all related to your memory.

1) You have forgotten to fit your memory back in.
2) Your memory isn't properly seated in its slot(s)
3) You have killed your memory because of not following antistatic procedures.

I'm suspecting it is either 2 or 3.

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

Answer:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

I am having trouble with a 6 month old IBM R51 laptop - when I select TURN OFF COMPUTER from within Windows and the START button - the computer sometimes hangs and will not shut down. I have to press the power button to reset. Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks!

Answer:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?

I just got this HP pavilion 762n last year. Now whenever I turn the computer on it won't respond(Goes to a Blank Black Screen) and the only way I can make the computer respond is to go to safe mode and UN-install the Graphic Card, then restart the computer back again. Once I've done that the computer would work, but I can't watch Videos or play Video Games on the computer. There also would be these little blue lines on the computer screen (Sometimes their would be alot of the lines and sometimes the lines would be made by the trail of my mouse).

I've tried lots of ways to fix the computer. I've tried:

- Un-installing and re-installing my graphic card (Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 graphics card with TV-Out) that came with the computer.

- Rolling Back My Graphic Card.

- Updating My Drive from Windows Update.

- I've tried using a program that test my computer and tells me whats wrong with it. It said I got a problem with something like the VIDEO MEMORY CARD and I don't know what that is.

Is the Only way I can fix this is to buy another Graphic Card. I do not want to waste $200.00. Please Help Me!

Thank You.

Hi all.
I moved out of a 14-year-old case (Gateway) and into an Ultra brand Gladiator mid-tower.

I have an EVGA nForce 650i Ultra Motherboard, and a "Power Up" brand 450-Watt power supply.

The setup worked fine in the old case, though Windows was freezing regularly after 15 minutes. I figured that was related to the hard-drive, since it wasn't tightly mounted, and I wasn't using enough cooling fans. So I got a new case and cannabalaized a fan from an old computer.

The power outlet and cord are good, and I swapped out the power supply with a 230 watt unit, and pulled the switch from the old case, but neither powered on the computer. Nothing seems out of the ordinary with the switch on the case I bought.

Did I buy a defective unit? Is there something I'm missing or should try again? Something else? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

Have you considered that going from a 450 psu to only a 230 might have something to do with it?

Is the motherboard shortening out by any part of it touching the case?

Hello there, recently, I've been having an issue with my PC. Randomly, all peripherals (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, etc.) turn off, but the computer stays on, and I need to turn it off by flipping the power off, and once I turn it back on, it boots normally and such. Like I said, the times this happens seem to be completely random, though I believe it has only happened at night, but that may be just coincidence. I have used virus scans, and nothing has come up, so I don't believe that's the issue. I haven't made any significant hardware changes recently either. Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Computer peripherals turn off but not computer itself?

Get into the motherboards bios by pressing a key noted when you first power up the computer. Look for "hit F? for setup" or something like that. Reset the bios to defaults

I recently installed an internal media reader and had to reformat my hard drive (don't ask...). When I set everything back up, everything works fine, however, when the computer is off, it tries to boot back up by itself? You hear the drives (CD and hard drive) get power, lights go on, on the tower, and 3 seconds later, it shuts off. It sporadically does this. Any ideas?

Answer:Computer Tries to Turn on by Itself

Check in BIOS, if you have Wake on LAN enabled.

Hi to anyone who can help me. I went away for 5 wks and when I came home I tried to turn on my computer and nothing! I checked all the power outlets and the power cord is OK but nothing, it's like it's not even pluged in! I mean I get nothing, no lights turn on or anything. I know there was a few power outages while I was away but everything else that was pluged into the same powerboard works (eg: monitor and speakers are fine). I'm not great with computers so I don't know anything about it other than how much ram and memory it has. If you need more info to help me please say so and how I would find this info and I will be happy to provide details. Another question I have is if you have an idea of what the problem is could you tell me if I will lose all my data? I had pictures that I can't get back stored on the computer so I am hoping i won't lose all that.

Answer:Been away and now computer won't turn on

Hi crazy_girl_83 (that's funny !)

Remove the power cord
Push the power button in at front of computer (dispersing all voltage)
Put the power cord back in (really goes a long way in on PC's)
Turn back on

Hi. Recently, my younger brother, told me that his computer could not turn on. So, the first thing I did was to check if it was his charger's issue. It seems like it wasn't. Then, I decided to try again with my computer's charger instead on his computer. Well, I noticed something. When I plug my charger into the power outlet, there would be a light to signal power is flowing. And when I plug it into my own computer, it stays on. However, when I plug the charger into my brother's computer, the light vanishes. Is there something wrong with his computer? Thank you !

Answer:Computer does not turn on

Sounds like his charger is bad. If your charger works, and his doesn't, it's bad.

I have a computer that is a few years old. after moving it, it won't turn off. it will go through the shutdown process, and power down for maybe half a second, than come back on. at first i figured it had to do with one of the cables connecting the front power button to the motherboard, but i checked those and it was fine. any ideas on why this is happening?

Check your drive for malware spyware viruses this may not be the problem but you wouldn't be out anything checking this.

I have hp hour pavilion dv7-6163us computer. It's 5 and half years old. I am not sure if it's 32 or 64 bit. It won't turn on but white light flashes where the plug goes. I haven't had any problems other than loud fan noise which has been for about a year. I have tried removing the battery and pressing power button for 20 seconds, then replacing battery and trying to turn it on, but that didn't work. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. Should I start with a new plug and see if that works? Thank you.

The past few days my computer has been getting really hot, and well a burning smell was coming for it. When this happened i stopped using it. I assumed it was becuase I haven't clean it in awhile. So i cleaned it and when I was done I tried to turn it on. Everything turned on for a second then turned off. The light on my motherboard turned on indicating that there is power. But it wont turn on, I can make it do the turn on for a second thing only when i unplug it and replug it in.

I believe its my power supply but I am unsure, I looked at it through the fan because i heard a clicking sound when i turned it on. I saw that some glue from inside had melted telling me that it had gotten to hot. I am not sure however that that is the promblem but before i buy one I want to make sure that is the actual problem. thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer does not turn on

This does sound like power supply

One way of identifying this would be to remove the power supply
ie unplug all power cables to CD HDD Floppy or any other Also M/B power Fans etc. Then unscrew the powersupply (from back of Desktop case) and carefully remove the power supply.
Then
Actually smell inside the powersupply for that burning smell (it usually lingers in there for a few days.

With the powersupply out you can inspect other components better to (ie m/b)

Choosing a new power supply, is dependant upon how many parts are in your computer (mind you as a golden rule, I always say 650Watt, usually takes care of everything)

Hello everyone!I have a very serious problem, and I need help:I have an (old) computer:Asus p4p800-VMRadeon 9200 se Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE SB0570The mouse, keyboard and screen, are connected to the computer through a switch (Edimax). The computer had problems before, and tried to fix them. I saw that the connections from the front panel of the computer case to the motherboard were faulty. I rearranged the connections to the motherboard according to the board's original user guide, which I downloaded from the original ASUS website, they are now set well.Having done the connections (and there for also the case speaker, which was set faulty), I began to hear a series of beeps (six) form the BIOS every time I turned the computer on.The beeps were irregular and did not match any of the tables on manufactures site (not uniform and differently sounding beeps (.Other than the beeps, the computer worked great. One problem it did however had, was that it would not return from standby mode (Windows XP). After the computer would go into standby mode, any and all clicks of the mouse or keyboard would not bring it back. The power LED on the front panel would blink, but it would not return from stand by.The only way to restore it was to press the power button; it would cause a computer to reboot (POST, BIOS, etc...)After several attempts, hoping to bring the computer out of standby, I hit reset - nothing happened, then I tried to press the power button - nothing too, a bli... Answer:Computer won't turn on

if this computer had problems before, which you didn't specify, then it sounds like your power supply is dead, I know you said it looks like it's getting juice but it may only be enough to turn the led on and maybe have a small amount to something else. All your components use different voltages and there is one thing you can try and that is to replace the cmos battery that would be the coin battery on the motherboard that looks like a coin if this is faulty then you computer won't boot or it will be erratic at best. If that doesn't fix it then I would get a power supply you know is good and hook it to your computer and see if it powers up.  The standby issue is probably set in your BIOS you can change that if you can get it to turn on. Try the CMOS battery first you can pop it out and go to the store and match it with another fresh one after you install that try turning on the unit.............gettingthere

I have a gateway 550 gr with windows xp.  recently it would boot up to the point where there is a single wight dot on the screen and i pressed f8 and started it in safe mode and then got it to start normally.  Now, i turn it on and it gets stuck on the gateway screen every time not allowing me to even press f8.  There is less than 5 free gb on the computer's hard drive which could be the problem.  Also I have an external hard drive attached and in the past it has caused problems but i don't want to remove it without using the safely remove hardware button.  Any ideas?

This is the first time I have posted here, so I would like to give an advance big thanks for any help you can give me. The computer I am working on will not turn on, checked through the forum, and tried these tricks, PSU, patched in a new one, did not help, bought a new CPU, (socket type) Did not help, Cleared the CMOS ( reversed the battery). no help. removed the ram, no help... in other words, I left the CPU,PSU, removed the periphials. and the ram,, all that happens is, If I hold the power button in, power lite on the motherboard comes on and "the fans" give a small movement. I have tried a new powercord... Is there anything else I should try? the CPU is and AMD, I am not sure what the Mother board is, I have not had it out.. I am at a loss, so anything I can try would be a great help,, Oh by the way, this was one of those " you turn the computer off and go to bed, and get up in the morning, and it would not turn back on things.... so it was working.

Hello,
My Dell Desktop computer will not turn on anymore. First off, it started going into sleep mode and then it finally just would not turn on anymore. Any suggestions on what could be wrong with it? Thank you.

Answer:Computer will not turn on

Hi Renee2014, and welcome TSG.

Was the computer displaying a message that it was going into sleep mode before doing so or was it just suddenly shutting down?

Is it not giving any kind of indication that it is trying to turn on when you press the power button?

These days, power supplies are not totally powered down when the computer is turned off. They provide a small amount of power to the motherboard, if for no other reason, than to allow the computer to be turned on using the front panel power button. Many power supplies and motherboards have LED indicators that indicate the presence of this voltage. You would need to open up the computer to see if such indicators exist and if they are lit.

What is the full model number of the computer?

Hi,everyone...
My computer automatic turn off by itself while I went to bathroom.
Then, I tried to turn it on again, it won't turn on!!

After that, I open my main system, I see the green light on my motherboard.....it seem the power supply is fine.

I tried to turn off my power supply and turn it back on, I saw the CPU fan turn on and I heard some "system loading sound"(the sound that you may hear when you turn on computer) as well.
but after 1,2 second, it shut down by itself again.
I repeat this twice time, I finally turn my computer on, then I enter to safe mode and scan my computer with AVG anti virus to see there any virus cause this problem. But when it scan like 800 file, my computer appear "Window shut down screen"(which is the thing you see "Saving your setting", "Window is shut down", when you turn your computer off) then, it shut itself down again.

What is going on with my computer? It is virus cause it happen?
What can I do with it?

Sometimes when powering down for the day, after selecting turn off Computer, nothing happens. The screen doesn't freeze but the computer doesn't turn off. I've checked applications with CtlAltDel but nothing is running. I've even tried restart computer but still nothing. The only option is to manually switch off using the power switch. This doesn't happen daily but can be a couple times a week. Will it hurt the system if the PC doesn't power itself down? Any info appreciated. Thank you.

click here See my post at the bottom of the page. That's what can sometimes happen if the power is cut suddenly before the hard-disks have parked the heads and powered down. Try configuring the power button action to initiate a shutdown if it is not already set like this. You'll know if it isn't because you'll probably have to hold the button in and then the power cuts off.R-click anywhere on the desktop, select properties, screensaver, power and advanced.

I just built a computer for my friend, and it won't turn on. Does anyone know why it isnt turning on correctly? any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Answer:New Computer Won't Turn On

that's normal for the DS3 mobo when you first use it, it`ll continue to turn on and off its all in the manual . It should stop doing it the next time you boot.

I worried when it first happened too but it all works fine after awhile, I would also recommend turning off the fan controls because if you watch, it`ll stop and start and that just worried me too much so now it goes full speed.

Well, i've had my laptop for about 2 and a half years. i don't use it much for anything, just writing, typing, checking e-mail, listening to music. I was on it one day. I lft and came back and the blue power light was on, but the screen was black. i turned it off and on again, but it was still black with only the lights on. a few hours later, i tried to turned it on and it worked! After that, it would do it again randomly and i'd have to wait two weeks. then it'd be normal with all of my stuff still on it. now i've trying to turn it on for about 2 months and it's only come one twice! yeah. i'm so confused, the compurter is barely used!

Okay, this is basically what happened two nights ago:

The computer won't turn on or off. I can't explain it well since I'm not much of a computer person when it comes to this stuff. Press the power button, and all the lights and fans come on, but it doesn't seem like te CPU is on at all...? Sometimes it'll come on, but after about 5 minutes later, it shutdowns on me.

Which brings me to the next problem, whenever I try turning it off, it'll do all that "Saving settings" stuff, but at the very end, when it tries to turn off, all of a sudden the CPU (?) light on the tower and the E: drive lights will start blinking, and something inside the tower starts turning on and off and goes with the lights. The only way I've been keeping it off was unplugging it.

Now here is an explanation of things that happened tonight:

Now the computer won't even turn on. Whenever I plug the cable back in, the CPU light flashes, and something in this box makes a noise that goes with the flashing. The cooling fan does turn on. Those are the only things that turn on as much as I can see.

I also found this at the bottom inside the computer tower. I put it on a peice on lined paper for size comparisons. Any chance this may have something to do with it?

I have a lot of family photos on the computer, what are the chances of recovering them, if possible?

Please ask me questions for clarifications on things. I appreciate the help.

Answer:Computer won't turn on..

Are the lights coming on at all? If not, my first guess would be the power supply. A failing power supply will reset your computer. There are a myriad of other issues it could be (motherboard for one), but that is the easist to test out. If you are fairly knowlegable, find a computer that is similar to yours and see if you can swap the power supply. Just be very careful to put all the right cables back, and don't force them into place.  Good luck!

I'm building a computer for my parents for christmas to upgrade their archaeic thing they call a computer and i put everything together and it won't start up. Everything is connected right to my knowledge and i think it could be a bad mobo. Its technically my first build although i replaced nearly everything when i customized mine, so i'm not completely ignorant. I thought it might be the PSU so i swapped out the 420 watt psu that came with my old computer that worked fine with the 350 watt psu that came with the case... same results- An interesting note both PSU's make a high pitched hum when the switch is turned on and the cable is connected. No juice tho. I have reseated the cpu twice, all the pins are straight- its my old cpu from my computer that i upgraded and it worked fine the day i took it out. I have checked all the cables to make sure they are secure, and the PSU is set to the proper voltage on the back. I'm stumped- i ordered all parts from newegg and the packaging was fine- no dents and everything was brand new. I removed the soundcard-and left everything essential connected and tried powering up but still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas on what i could do or what i havn't tried?

I mean, it says its shutting down, then the screen goes into standby mode, but the computer keeps running.
I don't understand why or how this could happen.

I've just gotten the last part (The RAM) of a new computer that I was building myself. I put everything in its rightful place (I think), and I've gotten quality parts as well... But my computer won't turn on.

When I hook it into power, the light on the motherboard goes on, so I know it's getting power, but when I press the power button, the light goes on on the front of the computer, but the computer doesn't come on. A fan in the back flashes on and off (LED fan) - it looks like it's getting power for a little and then not... But the light on the mobo stays on the whole time... Aaaaggghhh - I've checked every connection, etc.

Any idea what my problem could be?

Well thats encouraging to start with, if your not sure if you did something right, then start from scratch, check everything is seated correctly and that the front panel wires are in their correct place on the board, make sure that the hardware such as video cards are working OK and that the RAM is the right type, make sure any jumpers on the board are in the right place, especially if you have one that resets the BIOS to defaults, some mobo makers leave the jumpers in the reset position.

Hi
I am ahveing a challenge turning on my computer. When I turn it on, one of the indicator lights blinks and then there is no more power. I then have to unplug the computer and replug a few times as the same theng keeps on happening, until the computer starts.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Tks

Answer:Cannot turn on computer

sounds like a short in the connection to either your walll or to the powersupply. could be a faulty powercable.. seems like the most logical thing, try using another cable to connect from your pc to the wall. if that doesnt work, its a problem with the PSU or wall outlet. you can test the outlet with another device to eliminate that.

For whatever reason may be, my computer won't turn on. Every time I go to power the computer on the Motherboard does nothing. And I see nothing on the screen. I can hear the DVD Rom powering up as well as the Hard Drive. But the fans on the CPU don't turn on. I know the CPU is getting power because I can feel the heat that emanates from it. Its strange because I was having problems with my computer for the past few days with defragmenting.

I was using Ultimate Defrag to try and make my computer faster by moving files around the disk, but it ran all night and never completed, in fact the time estimation kept increasing not decreasing. I then quit it and ran Defraggler for all night long and discovered that my computer would not show anything on the screen.

Did I leave my computer on too long and screw up the CPU?
Or is my Motherboard just Fried?

I did check to make sure that it was clean inside my computer and while there was some dust its nothing too bad, just a few spots here and there, and that was mostly in a corner away from the components.

I tried unplugging everything from the Power Supply except the Motherboard. Also I am hearing no bleeps or other sounds and the computer and the screen stays blank. No Bios screen or anything.

On a related note the computer is a cheap Lenovo that me and my brother bought, he had his own. His died out a while back, but that was because of the cheap Power Supply, although a week later it quit worki... Read more

Answer:My computer won't turn on

Could be the motherboard but test or replace the power supply first. Always start with the simplest, least expensive solution. Hopefully that will solve your problem.

Hello,

I was working on my medion computer this morning, when suddenly it turned off, and it is now refusing to turn back on. I have done what it advised me to do in the computer manual, which was to turn the power supply off, press the on button for ten seconds then turn the power supply back on after five seconds and turn it on.

When it crashed I was using:
Windows Media Centre
Windows Media Player
AOL Vista Ready

I have tried the following to get it to work:

Change which socket I use
Change the cable
Leave it for a while
What the manual said
Unplugging all connections and trying to start it

Does anyone have any other ideas I could try or know what is wrong with it?

Thanks

Answer:Computer won't turn on

HI dan ..

try using a different power supply .. there are other things that you could try first like removing all the power cables to HDD's & CD\DVD's, removing everything but the CPU & CPU FAN and power supply connectors from the motherboard and then try powering on again but I reckon it might be easier to raid one of your other PC's for a similar power supply and see if it boots using that .. and at the same time the other power supply could be checked on a working PC to see if it works .. just take care doing it ..

My computer was working perfectly fine. I was moving and put my computer in storage for 1 month. After getting it out of storage I hooked it all up and went to push the power button and nothing what so ever happens. No green light turns on. Basically, it's as if my computer is not pluged in (and yes it is)...lol. I tried switching the power cord but that was not the problem. Someone had told me to try the reset button that didn't do anything either. I don't know much about computers, just the basics. I do not know what to do to fix this situation.... someone please give me tips on what I may be able to try and do.

Answer:My computer will not turn on.... Help!

Could be a few things....I would start with checking the power supply. Some come with a switch on the back to shut them off.....next I would replace it.

Okay, about two days ago, I decided to thoroughly clean my computer, in and out. I kept a log on which connection go where so that when I put everything back i dont screw anything up. The majority of the cleaning was with just blowing air or lightly wet cloth for the tower. Only thing i didnt clean was teh power supply cause i didnt wanna bother opening it but i cleaned the vents.

After I put everything back together i let it dry for a while and tried to hook it up that same day. As soon i plug in the power supply to the wire, high pitched noise came and later a funky smell. In response, I immediately disconnected it. I thought maybe its still needs to be dried up, so I left it as it is overnight. Next day I try again. Same thing happends and this time, same noise happends. I try turning it on and it didnt. I checked all my connections, everything seems to be in place.

What went wrong?!?!? Whats is that high pitched sound?!!?

The PSU cant be broken cause i was working normally before i cleaned it.

Answer:Computer won't turn on!! Help!

Hi
Sounds like something is/has shorted out, where does the noise come from, if its the PSU its possible that it has failed, and will require a replacement, if it came from the PC speaker, then check you have everything wired correctly.

My computer has been dead since yesterday, I was playing games on it and suddenly just froze completely. I shut it down by force, and when I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't work.
When I turn it on, the fan spins for a second and then stops and the whole computer is shut down for another second, and restarts itself, but this time is fan is spinning a lot slower...
It is a second-hand computer...I've used it for a year now but it has been perfect until yesterday.
Please help!? What could be wrong?

When I turned it on in the morning. It booted normally and then it got a blue screen and then I turned it off and it wouldn't turn on anymore. The mouse and keyboard and monitor won't turn on. The only thing that works is the CD drive it opens and closes. Where the power button is I kept pressing it and the light won't turn on anymore now I don't know whether it's on or off.The error that I got was 000000000*15?

Answer:Computer won't turn on?

Try to disconnect everything from your computer apart from the mouse KB and monitor remove the power cable then press the ON button for 30 seconds or so to discharge whatever power might still be in the system and let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes then reconnect the power cable but not anything else you disconnected and see if it boots. If that doesn't work there are other things to try but try this first. Also it's always helpful if you complete the details of your system in your System Specs section of your profile

Hi all,  I'm new here.  The other day I was on my computer and it was freezing up.  I shut it off and when I turned it back on, it would get to the windows screen with the green dots running across and then wouldn't go anyfurther.  I shut it down again and sprayed it out with canned air (as I have done b4).  Now it won't turn on at all.  The green light on the motherboard is on and that's it.  I have a Dell Dimension 2400.  I did go out and by another power supply.  Still doesn't do anything. Can anyone help?  What more do you need to know. Thanks for any help!

Answer:computer won't turn on, need help!

Dell happens to use their own design of PSU's...you may have wonked your machine  by just throwing any old PSU in there,Can you post some specifics ? ?

Hellow guys, i'm also currently have an issues where, when i switch on the main switch, the computer turn on itself, i didnt even press the power button! And after a few second, maybe 2 to 3 or 4, it turn off itself again. When i press the power button myself, there is no more power. I cant turn it on.

So, i do the same thing again. This time I switch off the main switch and turn it back on and the same thing happen again, the computer turn on and off again, and i also cannot switch on the computer after that. The same thing happen the next few time, so i assume there is something wrong with the hardware, or something loose? Any idea anyone?

And, to be more specific, when i turn off the main switch and turn on immediatly, there is no power and the computer is not running. But if i wait for maybe a few minute after turn off the main switch and turn back on, it run itself, the same process as i mention above. So is it weird? Hardware problem?

Answer:Computer turn on and off itself? Help

did it just start doing this out of the blue? Did you do something before this started?

The first thing I'd check is the power button on the case, as you say it does not work and if it's jammed on the ON it could give similar issues.
Open the case and remove the power button connector from the motherboard's pins, and if you can install in its place the connector of the reset button. Both buttons are the same under the hood so it's not going to hurt the board.
Now try using the reset button as if it was the power on/off button.

Hello. I'm having a very weird issue with my laptop. I put my laptop into standby when I was using it earlier because I was moving it from one location to another and I was going to be using it in the other location. When I tried to power on my laptop, it wouldn't power on! Nothing was wrong with the laptop when I had used it earlier; I was on the internet with it and I even used it during one of my classes at college. I tried holding down the power button for a minute without the battery or power cord in, but nothing! Is there anything I can do?

UPDATE: The laptop is dead ; gonna back up my data and get an RMA

Hi, This morning I wake up and turn the computer on but nothing happens. My uGuru panel is flashing intermittently and so is the red light on my motherboard. I checked the power connections and they are fine. What do I do? First time I have come across this problem.

Answer:computer won't turn on. HELP!

This is a uGuru panel for those who don't know
If your motherboard led is flashing, the only thing I would think of is power going where its not supposed to. (Pins on motherboard touching metal case? Loose wire touching case? Ect)

At all.
Yes, it is plugged in
I press the "on" button, and NOTHING happens, no fan, no lights, nada.

One thing, there was like a red switch above my power socket on the computer, (where the lead goes into) with 230v and 115V, and I switched it, from 203 to 155, and then it didn't work. That might be the problem, I don't know. But when i switched it back to 203v, still, nothing happened.

The last time I turned it off, I'm pretty sure I just shut it down, like I usually do, instead of putting it on stand-by.

Answer:Computer will not turn on!

Not sure where you are located but if in US, and you turned it on after switching that, then you blew out power supply though it sounds like it was blown anyway and is your issue. I hope it was blown before you threw the switch because if not you may have done considerably more damage then that. Personal;ly it is time to take the power supply out and to a shop fopr testing...perhaps the whole tower.

Hello, I recently installed my new PSU(Corsair RM 1000) and GPU(GTX 970). I have experienced some problems with it but today my pc didn't turn on at all. You can read more about the previous problems in my Corsair's forum thread: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=135737
I just thought I would post a thread here as well since in Corsair, there is only one person helping me and he isn't always online.
I checked all the wires and they look properly connected.

Here is a couple of images of my pc:

Should I try and return my PSU? Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Computer does not turn on

Have you attempted to overclock anything (CPU or GPU)? If you are improperly overclocking, it could cause issues.
Just like mentioned in the other forum, you should look at getting at least 2 fans into your case. One in the lower front to intake air, and one in the back (by the cpu / power supply) to exhaust air. There are arrows on the sides of the fans to show you which way the air flows through the fans, so make sure you pay attention to that when installing. Without knowing for sure (would need to know what kind of computer case you have), I believe you could put two 120mm fans inside. Once you know for sure that you have the fans installed correctly, I would test it and see if your problem persists.

I just assembled a system on Tuesday for a friend. It's an Athlon X2 3800+, 2GB DDR2 800, and a single Geforce 7900 GS. Today, it was left running for a while and went into sleep mode. It would not turn back on. So he pulled the cord to the power supply and plugged it back in and now it does nothing when the power button is pushed, no PSU fan or case fans or lights or anything. I figure either the power supply is bad or the signal is not getting from the power button on the case to the power supply.

A couple of thoughts... Maybe the power supply that came with the case could not handle the 7900 GS; might be helpful to know that 3DMark was running at one point (we did use the computer under a load for a short time), and when the computer stopped working, it was not under a load. The PSU is rated at 400w; the video card recommends 450w (500w for SLI). The power supply, however, has two 12V lines wtih 20A on each. The combined rating says 25A. (Pretty good I thought for a power supply that comes with a case.) One of the newegg reviewers for the 7900 GS said the following:

"I have this baby in a Shuttle SK22G2B XPC, which only has a 240 watt ps. People, please do some research and don't assume half these kids know what their talking about. Don't let the two additional molex connectors needed to run this baby scare you into buying a gazillion watt power supply. A solid 350 watt ps from a reputable manufacturer should be sufficient." (Is this true?)

Hi everyone, I realize many people have asked this before, but none sounded like mine. Here goes.WindowXP Custom made computer, 6-7 yrs oldNot sure of the restMy mother's computer was having trouble. It would turn on, but wouldn't boot past the windows screen. She got my cousin to look at it, and he apparently did Recovery Console twice. This enabled her computer to boot into safe mode, but not normal mode. All of her information was still there in safe mode, so my cousin said everything was fine and turned the computer off. Then it wouldn't do anything. It acted just as if it had been unplugged.I went over there to make sure no wires had jiggled loose, made sure the video, sound, network cards, etc were all in tight. Nothing seemed damaged, nothing was loose. Put it back together and plugged in the power cord, now there's a whiny/low pitch hum without even touching the power button. The computer is still 100% dead and lifeless, no fans/lights/etc, just this weird hum that has never been there before.I check the wall outlet, that's not the problem. I switched the power cord with a new one, still nothing. I unplugged everything except the monitor, still nothing. There's no AC switch on the back that could have been bumped. I don't know what else to do? Did my cousin delete the system or something? Please help, she's really upset she'll loose all her pictures and stuff.Merry Christmas!

Last night my computer froze up, so I turned it off, waited a few minutes & tried to reboot again. It came to the DELL startup screen, but after that went to the black screen... but the computer was still on, the fan & drives were running. I decided to wait it out and I left it off for the night. I woke up, turned it on and it did the same thing. I let it sit for about 2 hours and it is still running and on that blank screen. Anything anyone can tell me to get it to reboot fully? Or anything that could possibly have gone wrong?

It's a Dell Optiplex GX280 running Windows XP Professional.

Can you get it to start in safe mode? During reboot hit F8 and choose Start in Safe Mode.
