I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys. I'm thinking of buying this pc as I plan on making the jump from console to pc. What are your thoughts on value for money? Will it be able to run games in 1080p 60fps for a couple of years? When do you think I would need to upgrade parts etc?

My old CPU + MB are finally showing signs of aging on newer games, trying to play things like AoC, Vanguard, and (eventually) Warhammer Online is an exercise in graphical blandness.

I upgraded my video a few months back, but not much improvement, thus I'm thinking it's finally time for a MB + CPU upgrade to match my 8800GT 512 graphics card.

My budget is $300, I have not done much overclocking in the past, but feel that with good online guides I can learn quickly.

With the below being my current system spoecs, what would be recommended so I can see my MMOs in their full glory?

I prefer a resolution of 1280X1024 on my LCD monitor, my understanding is that CPU is the limiting factor at lower resolutions, is this correct?

Nvidia 8800GT 512
Vista x64
550W Power Supply

NOTE: Considering dropping back to XP for gaming purposes

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi guys, I'm new to the forums as you can tell by my post count, and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on a decent gaming computer, to run games such as C&C 3 ( and 4 in 2010) CS:S, and maybe even FO3.

I have around ?500 to spend ( monitor is not needed ), I have found a pretty decent looking computer from Staples: Your business partner for Office Supplies, furniture and technology.

Just wondering if this comptuer is decent enough to handle these games, and maybe future releases.
Also could someone please explain what is the difference between Intergrated graphics and dedicated graphics.

I don't have too much experience with the hardware of computers, so building one is off the question.

Thanks QuikR

Hi all,

I've been thinking about building a gaming pc for the first time, and was hoping to get some thoughts on this build. I'll be on a budget of up to roughly $1300, on a 1080p TV for a display, and was considering the following:
(PCPartPicker list)

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($189.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($75.99 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($65.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card ($405.91 @ Newegg)
Case: Rosewill THOR V2 ATX Full Tower Case ($108.34 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: SeaSonic M12II 650W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($95.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($14.98 @ Outlet PC)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($89.94 @ Outlet PC)
Total: $1277.10

I probably won't be purchasing much of it for a month or two, so I realize things may change, but I thought I'd try to get as much figured out now as I can. The biggest questions I have are about the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and HDD:

Is it worth the extra cost to get an i5-4670K over the i5-3570K? The reviews I've seen haven't shown much (if any) gaming improvemen... Read more

Answer:Building first gaming pc, thoughts?

I think you should go for the latest Haswell chip (4670K). It has much more power saving features than Ivy Bridge does, and will future-proof longer. Here is the build I suggest:
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K ($200 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H ($180 @ Newegg)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) ($70 @ Newegg)
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 770 ($400 @ Newegg)
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro ($240 @ Newegg)
PSU: Corsair HX750 ($130 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ($60 @ Newegg)

This is a build that will fit the $1300 budget. I can easily trim it down to about $1000-$1200 by downgrading components. This is the cream of the crop, the best of the best build you can achieve right here for <$1500. I recommend the build as is. You may need to add in a HDD for external storage for about $100. Also, at 1080P, you dont really need a GTX 770. You can downgrade to a 660Ti (or the 760Ti when it is released int he coming days). With some price hunting and some more research, you can find deals on components. I can easily get this build down to a lower budget if you ask, so please, tell me feedback .

Well, my beloved 19" CRT just died on me... So it looks like I'm in the market for a new monitor.

I am looking for something in the upper quality 22" LCD range.

Through the research I've done so far, I have picked out these 3 monitors that I am leaning towards, but would love some personal opinions from you guys before I go ahead and make a final decision.

Viewsonic VX2235WM
Samsung 226BW/226CW (No clue about the differences between the 2)
HP W2207

The monitor I'm after would be strictly for gaming, so i'm after the best picture/lighting quality I can find. I have read that many LCD's can be a pain when it comes to games with low lighting, so i'm trying to keep this aspect in consideration as well.

Answer:Gaming Monitor - Thoughts?

i have the samsung 226bw, its pretty much the best you can get for 22's, i wouldn't go hp, there monitors arn't good. What ever you decide for a good gaming experience you'll want 2ms response and 3000:1 contrast (thats the specs of the 226bw

On friday night i got a new gpu to replace my broken gtx 560ti, the one i got is only a gtx 670 but hay funds are tight.
I thought best bet is to replace the os completly have a fresh start no bad drivers hiding about, i know im using windows 10 (build 1041) on my laptop (as its my development machine and i need access to the emulators that my windows 8.1 home edition does not allow :( ) its been rock solid, ill use that.
for me this was a big mistake, space engineers crashed a few times other games seemed slugish, when i installed the latest drivers i got the new BSOD screen.
My main pc is back to windows 8.1 and running like a slightly old champ again :)
im wondering i was just unlucky, so whats been your experince with games on win 10? (and what gpu are you using)

Answer:Windows 10 for gaming (thoughts?)

In regards to games, I play Guild Wars 2 regularly, and anything good on Steam at the time and it's been rock solid lately, running the latest fast ring build. At first I had the same issues you did, but it's been getting clearer and clearer with each update.

OS: Microsoft Windows Home 64bit - $90 (MSY)

TOTAL: $1089

I am trying to go for a red/black theme. The main thing I'm worried about is the motherboard-RAM compatibility. I'm not sure they will work together.

I'd would really help me out so so so so much if any of you could give me a heads up on anything that you think needs to be changed.

Answer:Mid-range gaming build. Thoughts?

Go with Intel: try to get an i5 3450 if your budget allows it. You'll also need to change the motherboard to a Z77 one. The RAM will be fine.

Would not recommend that OCZ PSU, get a Corsair TX or Antec High Current series one instead as they have much better build quality. 500-600W is fine for your system.

Just a quick question for you guys. I just replaced my DGL-4300 with a WNDR3700. My in-laws gave me their old (still working) ASUS RT-N13U after they upgraded their router.

I also just got a new home theater system. The LCD panel doesn't have internet accessibility, but the BR player and DirecTV HDDVR have ethernet ports. I am considering setting the RT-N13U in Repeater mode and using it with the HT setup as the internet access point. The ultimate setup will look like:

DSL -cat5e-> 3700 -wireless-> RT-N13U -cat5e-> theater components

Any thoughts on this? How much trouble should I have with this setup?

Hi Guys,
This is my very first post on Windows Vista Forums and I am eager to get into this thread!

First off....Windows Vista the very best you can buy for gaming.
This features the 64bit OS version which can process 14GB of RAM at top speeds you can find in a new OS. I would definitely recommend this OS for gaming and none other.

Now on to the main part of my thread: Compatibility Gaming! This is the most discussed issue for gamers across the US. The problem is how do you get games to work (specifically older games) on Windows Vista Ultimate? Well, there are 3 solutions. 1: You could wait until the company of the game makes a OS patch for the game although that could take a while. 2: You could go into the game files and put the game into compatibility mode for your OS. And 3: You could revert back to an older OS that works for your game. Which one would you choose? I would choose #2.

They are always going to make games work on a newer OS. Lets take the game Lord of The Rings Battle for Middle Earth 1&2. Electronic Arts (EA) has already made a patch for those two that will have 85% more chance of running on Vista! If doesn't work then it's the type of computer hardware you are using. The hardware would 100% guarantee be outdated! In that case just get more recent hardware!? It's not that difficult! With a bit of research, common sense, and problem solving skills you can get gaming compatibility issues out of your hair!

I hope this thread has helpe... Read more

HiIm thinking about buying a laptop, i will mainly be using the laptop for developing websites, using Dreamweaver and Flash etc.I will not really be using it for playing games although i may watch the odd dvd.I have seen a laptop on the tiny website, this is a link to it: click hereI was wondering if you think its upto the job in hand, and would appreciate any thoughts that you have regarding this laptop or recommendations you may have. Thanks Paul

Answer:Your thoughts???

Hmm, looks like a bit of an odd combination to me ... that's a powerful processor offering 64bit processing- which you don't need as 64bit Windows ain't out yet. And this isn't a machine on which you'd want to upgrade the OS when 64bit is available, I don't think. It does have plenty of ram, which is nice, but a poxy small hard drive. Also the onboard graphics is nothing to write home about and the screen res is pretty low: you wouldn't be happy if you changed your mind and wanted to play games on it.Dig around a bit - you can probably do better than that, or at least find a more balanced system. Other, wiser heads than I will probably point you at some other laptop deals. And it's always worth having a look at either a specialist laptop magazine or indeed dear old PCA for their best-buy charts and reviews.

I recently had a friends Toshiba satellite laptop which would not shut down and kept locking up, to have a look at.
I ran sfc/scannow and that cured the shut down problem.
However I cannot cure the locking up problem.
I ran an AVG rescue disk to check for any virus and that came up clean, I ran memtest and that was also OK.
This laptop is 5 years old and runs Vista basic, there is no back up, OS disk or hidden partition so I cannot restore it to factory settings.
I tried to download a hard drive test and the laptop locked up, the same happened when I tried to install it from a USB stick.
I ran a live Linux CD and it absolutely flies along.
The only conclusion I can come to is the Hitachi hard drive is dying.
Any one got any other thoughts on this.

I was hoping to get a little feedback on an upgrade for a new graphics card.

I am currently running a EVGA 6800GS 256meg 256bit GDDR3 card which is now 5+yrs old.
My old rig ran SLI and I was running 2 of these. I have to admit they are/were great cards ( I felt anyway ).

My new board can use crossfire but not SLI so I suppose its time to get a new card. My budget though is not great at the moment so I'm sort of tied to around 100-125.00.

I've been researching and doing some reading on different types/clock/speed/size and the like and seems the more
one reads and researches the more difficult choosing a card can get, as opposed to say motherboards/memory/cpu and the

I've narrowed down a few choices, see attached, but would like some feedback or other options as well.
I'm not a big time gamer but, if a decent game comes along that looks like fun I would like to be able to perhaps give it a shot without big worries.. - XFX HD-477A-YDFC Radeon HD 4770 512MB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Seems the gigabyte card could be the better value, though the XFX has the faster GDDR5 versus GDDR3 though one has the gig of memory versus 512, but the XFX has the better clock.

Sort of seems like trade offs in both directions.

Question: CPU thoughts

Okay so Im thinking of getting a new cpu, since my AMD Athlon 64 3700+ aint really cutting it. Im thinking between x2 4800+, fx57, and fx60. I can save my money up for it in no time, its just I really dont want to blow all my money away. Im a big gamer, so that can give you a clue to what Im looking for. And lastly, is there any chance I can sell my 3700+. Thanks in advance.

Answer:CPU thoughts

I'm sure you would have no problem selling your 3700. I would imagine you could get $150 for it at least.

As for the other chips, the FX60 would obviously be the best choice for gaming. Only you can decide if the $1000 price tag is worth it though. Personally, I would say no. The FX57 would be your next best performance, but the price tag is still pretty high, IMO. The X2 4800 would have better performance when running multiple programs, or multi-threaded applications. However, for gaming, it would be a small step down in performance from the 3700+. Probably not noticeable though.

Tom's Hardware has an article showing a comparison between all CPUs up to the FX-60:

If it were me, I would stick with the 3700+ and not waste $700 (at a minimum) on any of the chips. I am nearly certain a different kind of upgrade would be better. If you post your computer specs, we could give you suggestions on which upgrade that might be...

Question: Your thoughts

Well that time is soon to come for my current PC. I will trash it, and buy a new one. The one I am currently looking at is this one.

But i also have another option. I am thinking of possibly building a computer, but only if ill get better quaility for around the same price (preferably lower). So I ask you all if you could reccomend me part by part in making a new comp that could exceed the computer listed above, but not go over its price by too much.

Any help is appreciated, and i might as well say thanks before hand

Edit: I forgot to mention, i would also like a printer and a screen, so include that when your thinking of price

Wow, I can't believe that no one has posted into this yet! I will try and put together some options for you. Do you have any prefrences? AMD or Intel, Nvidia or ATI? Also, what will you be using the computer for? I can tell you right now that the computer from Best Buy would need a graphics cards to play any decent games as it comes with integrated graphics only.

Question: Just my thoughts

I just started using 7 and installed 7100 because I wanted to go with something more official and something that would have more support from others who have already installed it.

I hear that the leaked RTMs cannot be activated or something which was another reason I just avoided going higher than 7100.

Anyhow. WOW I mean seriously this is impressive. I was expecting better than vista but the 7100 build for me is making XP pro look bad in more ways than one.

I am sure of one thing. This OS is smokin fast next to anything else I have used and not just fast as in boot time or file access but because it runs so fast and smooth doing work in it has been a real pleasant experience all around.

I noticed one big thing right off and that was the optical drive access times. XP was a real dog when it came to putting any kind of disc in. I always hated having to use anything that was on a DVD or CD because you put the disc in then wait forever for it to load. This is greatly improved in 7 and that alone makes me happy as hell.

Pretty much everything happens faster in this which was actually shocking.

I could go on all day and night about the visual experience this OS is a real work of art as far as the UI goes. And it does that while only using roughly 200mb more ram than XP did for me. Again impressive to say the least.

I also like the fact that I am not rushed to install a graphics driver. I noticed that once I was on the desktop after the install I had no buggyness in the grap... Read more

Answer:Just my thoughts

The latest build I have tried, that could be activated normally with RC - keys was build 7229, and this build is somewhat faster than build 7100. Before you install too much in 7100, PM one from staff for info about getting 7229 (or a later or better build if somebody knows about this).

7229 was for me the best build of those activating normally

cheapest solution = buy another 10/100 hub (4 ports)

unless you want it all in 1 device, there's no performance difference. You don't need to make them a bridge either, that's completely higher up than what your doing. All you need is an uplink port (which is shared with port 1) or a crossover cable. Switches don't need addresses, they forward all data regardless of what protocol you use, the only address system they use are MACs which belong to every networking device anyhow.

You can put 2 subnets on the same physical network, you can make 500 if you want to, no real point to it, but you can, and they won't communicate without a routing device.

I'm still waiting in the MIR from those newegg gigafast's. So unless you don't mind waiting for your money (or for the rebate center to finally crap out the cash *if they do*) then I guess it's an ok deal.

Hi, was wondering if any one would be able to give me their thoughts on the following monitor, its a Philips PHP 170X5FB. Its on sale at PC world for £249.99, i would post the link to the page but not sure how to?Does anyone know where i can find reviews of this TFT or any other suggestions of better TFT's?Thanks

Answer:TFT your thoughts???

I'll try and provide the link for you but PC World pages usually time out after a while and links don't often work with their site, but see if this one does. click hereNot had any experience of Philips monitors myself but it seems a nice monitor and at a good price. Have you been into the store and had a look at it as they always seem different when looked at on a web site or magazine as to being sat on the shelf.Even if you buy from somewhere else its always a good Idea to actually see/touch a TFT monitor before buying. Remember you will be looking at it for quite some time to come.

Question: Any Thoughts?

I just put together a system with an

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe Mobo
512MB Ram
ATI 9600XT 128mb RAM
ATI TV Wonder
Sony DVD+/- RW
Samsung DVD-ROM

When I boot up, it takes about 10 seconds to do all the system checks (even though quick boot is enabled). Then, the hard drive shuts down, the system waits for 30 seconds and then the Hard drive powers back on and windows starts. Once Windows starts, the system works fine and is plenty fast. It seems like I have a wrong setting in the BIOS. Any suggestions? Please emails me at [email protected]

Question: thoughts on DA2

I played DA2 for now 3 days and i'm pretty tired of it already.
graphics are fine and such but how the game is played.
it's just terrible.
I knew already that you had only 1 race to play with.
but that there only be levels that you repeatly go back again and again.
that's awful:banghead
oke a city i can live with that its always the same but a dungeon not.
there only 3 to 4 dungoen's that you can go into only the route is a little different!:cry
also you cannot talk freely to your companions
it's just feel more like a big expansion pack then a real sequel.
it's certainly got more away from DAO awaking then the whole DAO.
which was much much larger.
what are your thoughts about it?

1st try at a site click herehow can i improve

Answer:your thoughts please

when you are faced with your first web-site, and you have made a reasonable start - at least you have the page on the web. It's not possible to provide a complete tutorial here, but I can provide a few comments.1. Consider carefully when selecting backgrounds and text combinations - you want the text to dominate, not the background. Nowadays there's a tendency towards white backgrounds with images and text displayed to best advantage, and I normally advocate that approach, but............... in your particular case I think there's every reason to go to town with some colour and texture - garden services make one think of green foliage and flowers. You'll find lots of appropriate copyright images on the web, and you should experiment. I would prefer to see an image of a colourful garden than a picture (however good) of a JCB.2. Your page title needs revising. C.W GARDEN SERVICES in grass green with the COTTINGHAM EAST YORKSHIRE part in say, a dark chocolate brown would look pretty good. The second line should also be in a smaller font size.3. You need more than one page if you want your business to look something on the web. I'm sure you can come up with a second page, giving a more detailed description of your services, with perhaps contact details. You can add the odd image or two as well. Close-up pictures of flowers, or even a few tools leaning against an old wooden shed would add atmosphere.4. Take a look through some magazines and gardening books to see how images can cre... Question: VPN thoughts?

Hello all.

as a security concious user i am considering a VPN service like this one (came highly recommended)

You guys here seem much smarter than me and i would love to hear your thoughts, here are my reasons for considering this solution

I live in the UK where privacy is becoming a thing of the past.]

I like to watch TV shows from the USA and as i cant buy them over here for months i on occasion may use other methods to get them , this service makes this safer and easier i think.

This service seams well priced for a massive gain in my online security.

i would like to know if i could put the settings onto my router and use it directly like that. (my isp is talk talk, using talk talk router)

does anyone recommend another service? if so why?

thank you in advance for yoru help, you guys always have the best answers

Question: Need your thoughts

I'm facing a very tough situation. Here I have a package that has two components, the key one is of course mine and its installation is always reliable, the other one is ms sql server 2005 express (which my company has been granted to redistribute). However, the problem is, Redmond (Microsoft)'s sql server 2005 express has quite a bit of installation problem especially for Vista machine, and the worst thing is, it could also crash a user's machine's during its installation, which is totally unacceptable. Microsoft is aware of it, however, it turns a blind eye to it, which is of course despicable as a company (even though you offer it for free).

In the meantime, MS has an element for system configuration checking to see if a machine would be able to install sql server for sql server 2008. Hence, I've requested MS via its Connect or whatever they call it to create a standalone utility for this checker for SQL Server 2005 Express 4 days ago. I thought the request is reasonable, however, no response whatsoever. Have posted the issue and request to most relevant sql forums to no avail. What's next? Bomb those mf??kers???? (who's responsble for creating problems)

FYI, my product is not their competitor neither, who am I? For argument's sake, even if the product is, it's not a zero sum game. What the ****, Microsoft, why do you **** on little guys like us??

Seeking an alernative to sql server 2005 express would be very costly, losing ... Read more

This might seem a bit long but, I wanted to hear some thoughts on both the losses and gains.
My current setup consists of:
MB Abit AN8 32x 939 board
CPU Athlon64 3700+ 2.22
3 gig DDR 400Mhz memory Dual Channel
SLI Nvidia 6800GS (2)
Power Supply Corsair HX520W
Various Sata hard drives and such, no worries with those.

As a gift I got a bundle from the egg this week which had the following:
P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard.
Intel E5400 Dual Core 2.7
2 gig of DDR2 800Mhz
750gig Hard Drive
Since there was no new video card with this and the board can run dual ati cards but not sli Nvidia and the motherboard doesn?t carry either an ati nor Nvidia style chipset ( P45/ICH10R ) can I get away with a single Nvidia card from my current setup until I manage a decent ATI card or if I am just wanting to run a single card would I be better with a faster Nvidia card?
I?m guessing the video card will be my bottleneck for the moment. I expect to see a nice jump from the single core AMD to the dual core Intel. Also, if I figure the memory side though I am losing a gig at the moment my speed basically doubled or will I still see a big hit there as well until I get more memory.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer:Thoughts on my new set-up

can I get away with a single Nvidia card from my current setup until I manage a decent ATI card or if I am just wanting to run a single card would I be better with a faster Nvidia card?

Yes. But, you do want to upgrade that video card when you can. I personally suggest sticking with Nvidia.
I have an ATI 4890 that I am pleased with it's performance, but drivers still suck.

if I figure the memory side though I am losing a gig at the moment my speed basically doubled or will I still see a big hit there as well until I get more memory.

You will still notice the speed difference in a big way. Where you will see an issue, is games loading.

So, It all depends on what you are doing with the system. 4G is obviously better than 2 if you are gaming. You won't need more than 4G, unless you are doing big video/audio editing and rendering, or virtual machines. Don't let someone talk you into more than 4G if all you are doing is gaming. You will be wasting your money. Save it for a big video card, and/or SSD.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at ... Read more

I accedently downloaded IE7 this last updated I did and thought it was the tabs...miss a few buttons though. But it seemed to start freezing up and crashing almost anytime i ran with it for awhile. I've done all kinds of scans and stuff and no spy/maleware or viruses. Is anyone else having the same problem? I uninstalled it and went back to 6 (yes i use FF to) but my girl don't wanna try something new with the net??? And it does the same to her too. And I'm getting the blame...any thoughts about it?

Answer:IE7...your thoughts.....

Actually, I was kinda impressed with IE7 (never thought I'd say that about an MS browser). Liked the tabs, seemed fairly fast, didn't like the menu bar not being on top till I found a fix for that here at Major Geeks. Never did crash on me, but then I may not have used it long enough to see if it would crash.

Had to uninstall and go back to IE6 due to the fact that some dll files associated with IE7 were not compatible with my HP psc printer. Couldn't scan anymore with the all-in-one. Not MS fault. HP promises a patch for this problem but I won't hold my breath!

Can anyone enlighten me on whether or not this is a good or bad way to go?

Also crucial ram is guaranteed to work

Question: Win 7 thoughts.

Just installed Win7 RC yesterday and must say that I'm enjoying using it a lot more than when I first installed Vista (SP1). There aren't any annoying little bugs in the GUI and windows explorer is set out really well. I especially like the new user directory working with the libraries and sub folders. It's just easier to understand and navigate with said library folders in the left hand panel rather than the complete folder list.

It's alot faster than Vista and installed very quickly.

The start menu, task bar and notification area are all totally configurable, which is great. Having a start menu where you can have everything or nothing, fantastic. I also love the way you can move opened programs along the task bar into whatever position you like. After being able to do this on Linux for so long, I really wanted MS to have this feature as well.. and now there it is :-)

As with Vista, MS has opted out of a real time network lights indicator in the notification area, why? Aside from a network gadget or looking at your modem lights... It was just a good idea in Xp that should have continued IMO.

Only one program issue so far... VLC won't play back smooth .avi's without windows turning aero off, the OS turns it back on though as soon as you close VLC.

All in all I'm really looking forward to win 7 being released. I'll be one of the first to buy it. :-)

I'd like to get the most out of what I got. My mother board is an abit IP35 Pro. And for speakers I have Creative Inspire P7800.

Coming out of the sub are all the outputs for center, sub, left & right (front, side and rear). The output cords that came with the speakers don't fully match the input for the onboard sound card.

I really don't want to spend $70+ on a sound card. Seems the onboad sound is rather descent. Sound I spend the $20-30 to get the cords that are missing. Seems that cords supplied with the speakers have 4 leads coming out of the sub and then they combine something into 3 leads going into the sound card.

Now when I go to mess around with the sound within windows I can't get anything to be produced out of the side speakers.

What would be my best option(s)?

I do appreciate the input!

Suggestions, please.

I have my main PC down. Came in one day and the lights and fans would spin, but no post and nothing on the screen.

Jumped the BIOS to clear, no change.

Removed hard drives, optical, reseated RAM and Video card nothing.

Removed RAM and graphics card. Still the same. CPU fan, case FAN and lights come on but no beeps.

Right now it I have it with out a CPU, only motherboard and PSU and Case fan, lights come on and nothing else happens.

PSU checks OK with mulitmeter.

So I am down to either a BAD CPU or motherboard, I don't have a spare 939 of either. Any suggestions on how eliminate one or the other.

If it is the mother board I am just going to move to an AM2 platform, because I can get the motherboard, X2 and 2GB RAM for the same price as just the 939 Mobo.

Any suggestions?

In the coming months I will probably be looking at running a new GPU set up. I am strung between the Geforce GTX 295 series or the ATI HD5870. Both look awesome both have good reviews. Although there are some differences. The GTX requires a whopping 680 watts of power to run and the cheapest version (non water cooled) costs a staggering almost $600 bucks. The ATI HD5870 I have heard over and over in benchmark tests it proves faster. Also it requires almost 200 watts less for power supply and it on average costs around $2-$250 less than the Geforce card.

I wanna know your thoughts. I am personally Not a huge ATI fan I have had a couple in the past and I've had some driver compatability issues. But from what I have heard the driver issues are working out and they are becoming lots more reliable. So I think I am shifting to the other side with this. I'd like some input if yall have any good things to offer. Thanks!

I think the ATI sounds good the be honest. That is what I would go with. I usualy use the cheaper nvidia cards and more expensive ati cards.

I did not notice any threads talking about their thoughts of IE9, so I decided to make one. Here you can discuss all of your thoughts, ideas, rants, suggestions, and any other topic pretaining to IE9.

I personally like it. I have been using Chrome for a while and decided to try the beta. I was actually impressed at the improvement over the other versions.

I'm curious as to what you guys are thinking, look forward to hearing your responces!

Answer:IE9 Thoughts

The install completely messed up my computer with some massive registry damage. I had to restore my entire SYSTEM and USERS hive! Apart from that, I am really impressed. Finally, an Internet Explorer that does not spend 2 minutes loading non existent toolbars. The only possible thing: I still do not like the Close Tabs dialogue. It is still not as immediately obvious, or clean, as the Firefox one.

Question: Need your thoughts

I'm trying to help the shop my brother works at upgrade/simply the current setup. I think I have a plan down but looking for 2nd opinions.

Multiple 4port hubs with varying speeds from 10Mb to Gbit. I've temp replaced the 10Mb with a Gbit to relieve the bottleneck.
Currently cables looks to be Cat 5 (non-e) at best.

My plan
Replace cabling that I can with Cat 6 plenum
Remove as many hubs as possible
Install two Gbit switches

Green- Devices connecting to internet
Red- 4 Port hubs
Grey- Modem (red next to grey is router)

My original thought was to put a 24port switch in the utility room and rewire but I'm not able to go through walls. I would have to use existing routes which would mean I would need a bundle of 8 wires running out side the wall to under the desk where the devices are sitting (stuff by modem).

I can fairly easily run from utility room to the left where an office is. The other devices all the way to the right is going to be an issue too since there are a couple walls to go over as well as it being about 20ft up.

Current plan
Put 16 port switch by modem under desk to allow for all and future devices to connect without buying new equipment later.
Put 8 port switch in the utility room to link the rest of the building.

This isn't a large shop. Family owned. They don't need anything crazy but want it to work and need stability. I'm looking at using the Netgear GS116NA and Netgear FS108 switches.

Question: XP vs 7 - thoughts

Hey guys,

Currently running a 32 bit OS with Vista. My computer supports 64 bit, but I am not sure how to go about installing it. Ive tried installing XP 64 and Windows 7 64, but I cannot not proceed to the setup because my operating system is not compatible. Ive tried restarting and booting from the CD and doesn't work.

But to my question, I currently have 2 GB of RAM, and going to 4 GB. As you guys know, 32 bit OS wont recognize anything past 3. Would you recommend going with XP or 7 if you are looking for a fast robust system.

Answer:XP vs 7 - thoughts

You can certainly upgrade from Windows Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. You'll have to do a custom install which will wipe out the existing Windows installation and move it to a Windows.old folder. You have to boot from the Windows 7 installation disk. You can't run it from within Windows Vista. If you want to do that, provide more details as to what isn't working.

...the story so far (in a nutshell) fed up with paying too much for my Pipex Broadband, requested upgrade several times via e-mail, no reply so asked twice for MAC code- no reply, sat on phone line many times without getting through.Today I finally got through, they offered to Upgrade me to 8 MB connection capped at 2GB (which is just above what I use) for £14.99 but on a year contract (currently paying £22.40 for 2mb connection)but I asked for MAC code, which takes 3 days to generate and I have to ring back back for it!!!Also, bizarrely told me it was no good requesting upgrades or Mac Codes or anything via e-mail or from within My pipex, as it wasn't as "secure" as phoning. i tried pointing out the irony in an ISP provider saying this but it was lost on the chap, he kept saying, "I know we are supposed to be in an age of technology but ..." !!So do I stick with Pipex to save the hassle of new e-mail addresses and router settings etc despite feeling a little aggrieved with them. Or do I pay Zen more for same connection but only a month's notice so could move on again if I wanted to, or if BE became available in my area?or go to Waitrose and pay them £4 a month extra but have the allowancecapped at 5Gb so no worries at all on useage.I'm all of a dither and getting a headache :(Help!

Answer:So what shall I do now? any thoughts please?

I had the same problems with Pipex, now I'm with these click here.

Has any body tried this programe "ANTIVIR"? if so what do you think of it

Answer:your thoughts please

I use it all the time.

For free it's very good - it works.

It doesn't monitor e-mail but it is for free.

Just as good is an antivirus program named Avast - again, free.

Question: Your thoughts?

Hi, just thought I would ask for other peoples opinions on the following:

Had a friend phone me last night because he said his PC turned on and seemed to just go into sleep mode, went and had a look at it this evening, symptoms are as follows.

Turn PC on, fans go, brief HDD activity but nothing on the monitor, no keyboard lights, no POST etc.

Tested with working PSU, same result.

Removed RAM, same result.

Stripped down to just CPU, same result.

Basically, no matter what I do all it does is power on (fans), no POST, no beeps, nothing.

Not going to say what my conclusion was but thought I would ask peoples opinions based on this info

I was at the store the other day getting a new monitor. One of the guys there was testing a laptop and I can tell it was still at factory settings and I saw Norton antivirus pop up.

I haven't used a factory default in a while. It's either desktops that I've assembled or laptops that need to be reformatted. But I was surprised they still include third party anti virus even tho MSE is free.

Then I remembered MSE is technically separate and has to be downloaded manually. Probably to avoid another anti trust suite. But the manufacturer has to put in some sort of protection so they put in a third party instead.

Is that the current situation? Norton and symantec are going to be around for a while if that's case.

Answer:Just some thoughts on AV

Norton and McAfee likely pay manufacturers a small fee to include their software with computers, which is why manufacturers continue to do it.

Recently I hired on at a new job, and after taking inventory of some of the equipment I'm at a bit of a crossroads. This new place has, sitting in the floor (read: barely unpacked) a SAN solution from HP. From what I've seen this includes an 8 port FC switch, the necessary GBICS, the drive array, and the FC cards for my servers.

In the past I've worked with DFS for balancing between multiple servers to increase availability, but I'm wondering about adding the SAN piece to the mix (something I've never deployed).

Here's the question for anyone in the know: Is it a good idea to tie DFS (2003 R2) and SAN technologies together? If so, what additional pieces are involved?

In my ideal scenerio, the SAN would host the files, but the network load would be distributed across the file servers tied into the SAN. Remote site servers would replicate the DFS overnight, giving my users mobility from site to site but still keeping the WAN links free from the bulk of the network's traffic during the day. Would I simply just not enable DFS replication between the servers directly attached to the SAN?

.....and my apologies go out to everyone who was looking for a job change in Oklahoma. We had a new hire before I could even post the opening here for my old job.

Answer:DFS and SAN thoughts

I've always loved storage, but I've never found a site / place / person to teach me about SAN's. Just my luck to find one laying around my new job.

Congrats on the new job though.

Question: Thoughts on SP3?

Has anyone successfully upgraded to the new Windows Service Pack 3 for XP Home? If so, how did it go? Are you have any issues or problems? Just wondering if it's a smart thing to do, or if I go on indefinitely running on SP2.

For the record, my gateway computer is running on XP home, SP2, 256 mb ram, 40 gb hard drive, with 16.7 gb free.

And I have no way to backup all my files, so I'm a bit aprehensive because of that. (Some recent bad updates - like KB951748 & a recent bad AVG update - have left a bad taste in my mouth, and I'm hoping I can leave well enough alone, without possibly doing more damage with yet another update)

Answer:Thoughts on SP3?

Yes, it is the smart thing to do. More security first and foremost. Better performance also. You should do it. Update your PC.

However, "Microsoft Update" is not easy in this case. Little bugs sneak in during install - sometimes, that is. Not always. But this means that you risk running into "issues" later for example after a reinstall. This wipes SP3 out. And then you have to face "Microsoft Update" all over again.

No big problem. You can always try again, - should the bugs sneak in. Unless you don't have the patience.

For that purpose we have the non-geek pay-a-little-money-solution: get SP3 on a disk from Microsoft. This here is the international link. And this for the US and Canada. Finally Microsoft about SP3 here.

This is a "New" Case/Chassis by Gigabyte. I guess they are jumping into the chassis market.

It's called the 3D Aurora. Although the name is pretty lame and over used, it looks pretty nice. And has some good features. Although if they are planning on selling this chassis they need much better pictures of it. The pics on their site are all too small. If i'm going to buy a case i want close-ups of every angle. Like does.

Here check it out:

What do you think?

Here's a better pic.

Answer:What are your thoughts on this?

Its plain looking with a pretty cool side panel... good case IMO.

Does anyone have AOL, and if so, have you upgraded to AOL 9.1? If you did, how did it go? Any problems or issues? Due to past problems with AOL, I am VERY leary of downloading & installing anything new AOL. All things considered, everything seems to working relatively fine right now, and I don't want to mess that up.

Currently, I'm using AOL 9.0 Optimized SE with a broadband connection (DSL), on a gateway computer running XP home, SP2, 265 mb ram, 40 gb hard drive, with 16.7 gb free. I'm wondering if it would be smart to upgrade to AOL 9.1 - will that be better? Or will it be even more of a resource hog & cause more problems? I guess I should learn my lesson, and not ever trust anything from AOL ever again and just leave well enough alone, but I guess there's a part of me that always holds out hope for those things that seems beyond hope.

Besides, they are saying that this update is "mandatory". I'm wondering what they mean by "mandatory"? Do I HAVE to update? What will happen if I don't? I'm kind of hoping I can keep using 9.0 OSE indefinitely.

Answer:Thoughts on AOL 9.1?

Here is what the AOL faq said about version 9.1

What's new in AOL 9.1?
AOL 9.1 is an update of our all-in-one software, which provides new features to further enrich your online experience. Key enhancements to AOL 9.1 include:
-The ability to browse the Web without signing on when you have a broadband or third-party dial-up connection
-An Inbox-style mailbox with unlimited storage
-Increased flexibility with the addition of express and customized installation options
-The ability to easily find and add RSS feeds to your Favorites while browsing
-Quick access to the latest news by clicking or hovering over the News icon in the Toolbar

In my opinion I would stop using the AOL software immediately and move to something else. If you have a third party broadband connection you shouldn't pay extra for aol's services. To me that is pure idiocracy. If your worried about email sign up for gmail, in my opinion it is much better than AOL mail, offers plenty of space and it is free. As for a browser, I'd move to Opera (my personal preference) or firefox. Heck, Internet explorer would be better then the AOL browser. Finally, their software does slow down your computer tremendously, uninstalling it will free up memory and make your computer have better performance overall.

I have a crappy Rosewill 400W PSU. I am pretty sure that my random shutdown are due to the PSU overheating because nothing else is at a super high temperature. (GPU: 55 C, CPU: 63 C) I feel really hot air coming out of the PSU.

Anyways, I need to replace it and I want something with more power and better cooling than just a 60mm exhaust fan. I don't want to spend more than $100 USD. If possilbe, I want a 24-pin mobo connector. Right now I want the ASPIRE Chameleon ATX-AS550W-BL ATX 550W Power Supply. What do you guys think of it? If you think something else would be better, please let me know.

Take a look at the thermaltake ones for your range, not nearly as pricy and not nearly as flashy and a better PSU

BTW: Your CPU temp is AMAZINGLY high, you are 7 degrees or even less away from the thermal dammage zone

Question: Your thoughts?

Hi Guys,
Over the last month I've been having some strange problems with my Pc. The monitor Screen After about 2 hours of playing games starts to go dark for a fews secs then light then dark again. This happens until I stop playing games. The Monitor is alright again.Put the game back on and it starts again. But it doesn't do it all the time.

The first time this happened, my pc wouldn't boot up again and my bios got scambled completely. The tech guy had to replace it and flash it. My power box also died.

Today it started again. I turned the game off and rebooted. I put the game back on and it started again. So I shut down my pc waited a minuite and rebooted.Halve way thru booting up my pc shuts down on me and reboots itself going on to the blue scandisk screen.

So what do you think is the problem?

*Monitor going on me?
*cpu or mobo over heating?
*Graphics Card overheating?

When I first boot up in the morning the monitor has light green lines across the screen for about 10mins or so.

My system is

Proview 19" monitor
Soltek Drv5 mobo
Amd Athlon xp 1800+
Asus Geforce4 Ti 4200

Answer:Thoughts on PC?

Looks fine other than a couple of issues. The 450w PSU is cutting it way to close and the Corsair CSM series are low quality at best.  Look at something like this: or this if you require modular cabling:, make sure you need 32gb of RAM, RAM is not as cheap as it was a few years ago.  If you do, I'd advice you swap that Corsair Dominator stuff out for something cheaper like this:  Corsair Dominator RAM is really overpriced, you are paying for the looks and that's about it.  The performance benefit is minimal to non-existent.Also consider whether you really need the 980, you are ordering a 1080p monitor which is relatively low resolution, a 970 would be more than sufficient.  Failing this, consider a higher resolution monitor, something like 1440p.  1080p on 27" is pretty horrible, 1440p will at least take advantage of the larger screen by giving you a lot of space to work.Your network card is fine although running a dedicated wire to the router will always be better than a wireless connection so do this if it is at all possible.

My mobo died a few days ago and instead of replacing it, I'm getting a completely new rig and I'll use the old parts to build a backup computer.

This is it:

Case: Apex Amoris 6010

Mobo: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3-B3

CPU: i5 2500K

GPU: MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr III OC

RAM: DDR3 1600 Kingston HyperX Blu 2x4GB
HDD & BD-RW will remain the same - WD Caviar Black 1TB & LG BH10LS30.
At first I wanted to get the 2600K, but the 2500K is so much cheaper, especially here in Croatia.

I haven't ordered it yet so if you have any better suggestions, please let me know.

HiMy niece is lucky enough to be having a PC for her birthday. The requirements are for something to help with her homework and a bit of internet access as well as being as cheap as possible.I have found the Dell Dimension 3100 click here for £289 delivered.I have a couple of questions which I hope the forum may be able to resolve.1. The package comes with a free printer, but no printer cable (Dell charge £10 at the moment for a cable). I assume it is a standard USB cable and nothing special??2. I think that theere is integrated Ethernet connection. Does anyone agree??3. If we wished to upgrade the memory or graphics at a later date would it be ok to insert these without invalidating the warranty?Any input welcome as well as alternatives for the same price (around £300).Regards

Answer:New PC - Your thoughts welcome

Initially looks OK for the money. Expandability a bit cramped with only 2 PCI slots plus a PCI Express, and only a 230w power supply. You'll need a modem whether broadband or dialup by the looks of things, and a graphics upgrade (presumably via the PCIe slot as this is all you have) is a must if games are on the cards. Regarding the warranty, suggest you get a green light from Dell before you commit.

Question: Thoughts on Win 7

I had XP for years, no problems, then the mb crashed and burnt, bought new PC with Win 7 about 3 weeks ago, in which time it has crashed (frozen) at least 30 times!!! It has improved since and the problem now is that after starting I can almost guarantee it will freeze on the 1st thing I click on. After re-booting it might still do it again and need another start or it might be ok, if it runs ok it will be ok all day & night, how strange. I need expert advice as to what it might be, if I return it to the shop they will charge me saying my software is a problem!! Can anyone help please. As you no doubt know by now freezing isnt usually caused by hardware. Freezes such as this are often caused by conflicts in software, too little ram, and many other things.

Several things you can try

1-run a system file check to verify and repair your system files
(type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>SFC /SCANNOW)

Let us know the results

2-check event viewer (type eventvwr in search). go to the windows log>application tab. Look for critical errors (they have red in the left hand column) that say app hang, app crash, or anything related to the problem.

When you find them note the event ID and source codes and tell us hat they are.

3-boot into safe mode (with networking). Does it still do it then? If not it is pr... Read more

I recently made the switch to windows 10 on my PC.
When it was upgrading, I thought this was such a seamless process. I didn't lose all my files and have to start over, kudos on making it very easy and convenient to install.
What I thought after the first 10 minutes: This is very cool.
11th minute: This OS is terrible. I am not talking about the bugs, I know this is beta. I like to consider myself as a savvy PC user but windows 10 is extremely frustrating. You've taken the windows 7 layout and thought, how do we confuse people even more. The start no longer looks like a start but like a terrible news feed. You don't have the same easy to follow layout of windows 7. My father has been learning windows 7 after upgrading from windows XP. That was a pretty hard transition, how do you think he will feel when he has to get windows 10? What about all the millions of seniors who will eventually have to upgrade?? This is not user friendly, at all.
This new windows 10 system is way too confusing, even for me. Is there a way to change the start menu and all the options to look like windows 7? This is just terrible design in my opinion.

Answer:Windows 10 - PC - First Thoughts

You keep saying its confusing but you're not saying what's confusing about it. Its probably the most straight forward Windows out there. And no they didn't take windows 7 nad made it confusing, they took windows 8/8.1 and tried to please windows seven users.

Hi All,

I'm buying a PC for my parents to replace the gas-operated one they've been using for the past 5 years. They don't need anything too fancy, mainly to help with my mum's business and basic browsing emails etc. I did suggest a desktop - but they insist on a PC.

I've linked one PC here, it's from a shop nearish to them. They have other options here but I wondered what the thoughts were as to the first option. I don't need a graphics card as they don't game, so I presume the setup will be able to handle facebook/emails etc etc.

Obviously I don't want them to buy something which isn't up to scratch. Their needs are quite basic, but I still would like them to have something which will be good for a few years.

Anyway - opinions welcome!

Answer:New PC - your thoughts needed

The first one you linked would be fine. 279 pounds. G3240 processor.

Dell is as good as any manufacturer, better than most. I have no idea about your local dealer. And I don't know if that is a bargain in your location. But it's a reasonably powerful PC from a decent manufacturer.

My only qualms would be the operating system. Looks like it's Windows 8 rather than 8.1.

Your parents might be more comfortable with Windows 7, but it may be hard to find. 8.1 is supposed to be more user-friendly than 8, but I've never looked at 8.1. I wasn't amused with 8.

OK I really need your input.

OK I built my first computer a month ago and after reading some I thought I was smart enough to overclock the cpu. On a different forum I got some help on what programs I would need to monitor temps of everything and stress test program etc. I was told safer temp ranges to stay within. DO STOP READING YET! Before I changed ANYTHING in the BIOS I ran the stress test on my stock setup! I was told my temps during the stress test were no good for overclocking (60-63* during stress test)

Normal temps were 34* with A/C on in the house and 40-43* with house open and room temp in the low 80's

So with the high readings during the stress test I decided I would NOT be overclocking my cpu! So I gave up on that idea right then. I didn't run prime95.exe again I did kill prime95 through task manager and saw the cpu temps drop back to 43-44* immediately and then before I turned off the programs like CPUZ, Speedfan, HDMonitor and Nivida Monitor I saw temps back to 40*.

Well I live in Indiana and I say this if this makes a difference because yesterday was the first 80 degree day since I built this computer. The house was open and it got to 85 outside yesterday and HUMID. So I say the computer temps about 5 degrees higher than when we had the house closed with indoor temps in the 72-75 range. Last nigh it was lighting and raining but the lights never flickered or lose of power. I got back on the computer after all the excitement was done and everything... Read more

I think this program is a piece of junk. Their customer support is really poor, the program is slow, when you uninstall the program it leaves LSP's behind, files, processes, reg keys/files.

I do actually know how to completely uninstall it, which most people do not, however i think this software should be considered bloatware or even rogueware o.0

Answer:Possible New Build, Your thoughts?

After some research it has been sujested i drop the Xtreme gear parts from this build due to unreliability (Being the PSU and CPU cooling)
Also that I upgrade to SATA III harddrives.

recently a 13" Edge made its way onto my desk via Lenovo to use for a few weeks on a project.   while i had it in my possession, i decided i might as well write a few things about it before i have to give it back.
coming from owning over three dozen ThinkPads spanning a decade and a half, i have mixed feelings about the Edge.   i'm an industrial designer by trade, so the first things i look at in a system are asthetics and interface.   as a traditionalist, i can easily say that the Edge is a vast departure from past designs, no doubt about it.
these days, it's not uncommon to find notebooks with gloss-plastic lids, bezels, and even palmrests.   for a ThinkPad, however, this is a foreign concept.   the SL series the last ones to have glossy lids were the Japan-market-only s30/s31 and 10th anniversary X30.   back in 2001 i used to own an s30 with the glossy lid because it was different.   the Edge seems to be grabbing for this same mindset.
the last models to have rounded corners were  the Z60 and Z61.  today, round corners are common on just about every modern notebook out therand have been for a while.   what was once a new feature has become commonplace -- almost a "me too" feature.   i prefer the sharper corners of traditional systems but the Edge is far from a traditional ThinkPad.   i guess i can't fault it for that.

Answer:my thoughts on the Edge

I like the simplicity of the design, the lack of lights and other stuff - my wife misses the lights and stuff.  It feels strong and reliable - but the wifi switch doesn't work. Screen is very pleasant. I love the integration of trackpad and trackpoint. I don't see why it doesn't have a CD drive. I mean it's not smaller than an MacBook which has a CD drive.... For me [IBM] Thinkpad is a trusted name. Lenovo needs to live up to that far the x200 isn't as good as the old's still good but not as good...Edge is good but not Thinkpad great.

Long story short ; Downloaded FF  on my old laptop as reccommended from here about 3 years ago, roughly. As I remember I was under the impression that although FF and IE can run together it was better to just run one and you cannot get rid of IE 100%. Been using FF ever since and loved it. Made my ole laptop run much faster. Oct 2009, had to buy a new Laptop and I was wondering if all the above still holds true? The reason I ask is I posted on another thread about FF and someone said use em both? Kinda dumb founded me. lol (Snide remarks to yoruself) What do you think of IE 8 which I have not upgraded to yet. Until I decide to install FF or not. Thanks in advance,MP.

Answer:Fire Fox / IE and thoughts on IE 8

I actually have been using Google Chrome quite a bit, and I really like it. It is very quick, and some of the little extra features have come in quite handy at times.  Before that it was mostly Firefox for the last few years.  I also kept IE upgraded, as Windows Update and a few other pages (such as my employer's time card software) only display correctly on it.I have to say though, after a little while with my new machine with Windows 7 and IE 8, the new browser really seems to run quite smoothly.  I'm sure someone will reply about potential security issues, but I haven't had any trouble yet. Also, I have had no trouble having all three browsers installed at the same time, and every once in a while, may have all three open at the same time. All of that to say, if you're looking for a quick, not-too-many-frills browser, try out Google Chrome.jb

I just purchased a second computer (that the kids won't be using) and was sold Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. My state of mind when I went into the store made me ripe for an easy sale. My question is: should I have more, and if so what is compatible? The packaging makes it sound like the be all and end all, but who can believe packaging? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer:Is Kaspersky enough? Any thoughts?

Hi ,notrojansplz.Don't take off the packaging , take a look here.
