Unable to shutdown.exe when computer is "lock"

Question: Unable to shutdown.exe when computer is "lock"

I am using Windows XP Professional on a stand alone pc.During the day I ctr alt del to lock the computer to run some reports. With the windows scheduler I schedule "shutdown.exe -s -t 0" to shut down the pc at 5pm.When using ctr alt del to lock the pc the shutdown.exe does not work. When the pc is not lock, the shutdown.exe works. The only program that is open before the shutdown.exe is another scheduler to run the reports. During the day, need to ctr alt del for security reasons.Looks like I need a script to ctr alt del to unlock the pc so that the shutdown.exe can work.Have look into the msdn library and could find any appropriate scirpt.Need some pointers on where the scripts are or there are other ways of shutting down the pc or someone has such a script. Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Unable to shutdown.exe when computer is "lock"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

When I started uni, I had to change settings on my browser(Firefox) and computer to connect to the university network. The instructions for which or here if they are any help (Configure your laptop/PC :: Wireless Access at Aberdeen - DIT, University of Aberdeen click on windows7).

Currently, the wireless network I'm trying to connect to is a BTHomeHub with "shared" "WEP" settings. What do my computer settings need to be for this?

Hopefully someone can help, thanks :)

Hi

I need to able to disable lock computer on Windows 8, as we have a couple of PCs that are being used with a single guest account for a large number of users just for checking currency and timetables on the Internet etc. The PCs have been configured to Force log off users after 2 minutes of inactivity, but the ability to lock the system is not desirable - as the next "guest" can unlock it with the same password. Therefore locking it could lead people to have a false sense of security.

I tried loading the guest hive in registry as admin but even this did not give me access to the policy key I needed to change.

Can anyone help?

Answer:Windows 8: How to disable "lock computer" on local guest account.

You can disable showing the lock option from the CTRL+ALT+DEL page by editing the local group policy, but then it's disabled for all users.

Why are they guests, curiously? You may be able to do what you want if they were just normal local users on the machine (not admins-just normal users instead of guests).

Hello.
Recently, specifically 11/23/2016, my computer started shutting off by itself. At first, I thought it was a problem with the internal fan. So, I bought some compressed air and used that to remove the dust from my fan. When that didn't work, I thought it was a virus. So, I ran tons of virus scans and still came up with nothing. My computer was virus-free. It wasn't until today that I realized my laptop turned off every time I pressed caps lock. I didn't discover it before because I must've pressed it by accident and not realized. Also, my caps lock button used to light up when activated, but now it doesn't light up at all. I think there might be a short in my hardware, but I'd really like someone elses' opinion before I assume the worst. When I go To Control Panel And Make The Keyboard Easier To Use. And I Tried to disable Sticky keys. So If Anyone Could Help me fix it i would really appreciate it.

Answer:keyboard shuts down computer after pressing "Caps Lock"

The keyboard itself could have physical damage or just failed, I'd start by trying an external keyboard and if all is well then I'd remove the internal keyboard and inspect for liquids or a damaged cable. Laptop keyboards are generally pretty cheap and easy to replace.

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

Answer:Start menu -> Shutdown Button - "shut down" and "sleep"

It's that difficult to click the arrow?

There is/are gadget(s) with this functionality.

For the past few days, I have had my xp lock up showing the classic logon popup window; within every 5 mins or so. It is driving me crazy!

It is NOT my screen saver settings, as I do not use that, and have checked to be sure it is NOT ON.

It is more like someone is hitting the win logo key + L every 5 mins or so... Only difference is that if "I" hit the win logo key + L , it will lock my system up and bring me to my "welcome" logon screen. This is happening much the same way, except the "classic" logon popup window comes up when my system locks; I have not changed my logon from the "welcome" screen, and I am NOT hitting the win logo + L keys. Argh!

I have had to remove my logon password so I can just hit the enter button to get back to what I was doing each time this happens. Ugh! Every 5 mins I am idle, so I can't sit here to read without this happening, or view any videos either. I have to be physically keyboarding to not have this occurr. I have searched all over to figure out how to disable it, but to no avail.

Please help.... I am going out of my mind here...

Any help would be sooooo much appreciated.

I always choose the option to arrange my desktop icons in alphabetical order. Naturally when I choose that option the icons arrange in alphabetical order with the exception of the "My Computer" icon which remains in place in the top left corner of the screen. Somehow the "My Computer" icon disappeared so I created a new shortcut however, when I alphatize the icons the "My Computer" icon moves to its alphabetized space. I could manually arrange the icons which is a nuisance but wonder if there is some way secret to lock that particular icon in place as it was previously. Thanks for your replies

OK fellow "computer-holics", here's a difficult one for ya. I have a user who e-mailed me the following:

"Ever since I downloaded Crystal Graphics' "PowerPlugs v 1.2" (powerpoint plugin software I purchased which allows for 3D motion graphics on slides), Microsoft Powerpoint won't allow me to access "Slide Color Scheme" or "Apply Design Template" from the format menu...."

I've tried completely removing Office, and re-installing it, but to no avail. I have yet to find an uninstaller for the "PowerPlugs" software, so I haven't tried that yet. (I wan't to save that as a "last-resort" anyway....even when I DO find an uninstaller). Does anyone know anything about the PowerPlugs software that could help out in this situation? Thanks in advance for any help.

I can only suggest that you use this form to contact the vendor of PowerPlugs:

This is my first post on the forum so apologies if I am asking a simple question/one that has already been posted; I've searched through the forum & found some similar postings, but each case seems to be taken on its own merit, so thought it would be best asking the specific question(s). This is a two-part post to provide some background information that may/may not prove useful (again apologies if this is all unrelated and just a simple problem caused by the user not the equipment).

Some time ago I noticed some irregular occurences on my system, starting off with “My Computer” opening the same folder at startup (C:\program files\nero I think) and taking a LOT longer to shutdown/restart than normal (anywhere between 5 & 15mins to shutdown). Occasionally ckdisk would run at boot and after analysing would go through the process of recovering orphaned files (on both C: and F: ) After roughly three weeks of this problems seemed to arise every time I started my computer: certain components of Nero stopped working; TuneUp Utiliti... Relevant Computer Specs(IMO): winXP Home ed. OS/ MSI PM8M-V motherboard w/ Intel celeron 3.2 processor/ 1x1 gig of ddr400 Ultra RAM/ and a cheap 450 watt power supply that could very well be going bad. Overclocked to 3.5 Ghz.

The Story: My computer use to shut down on its own without me manually telling it too. Also, the Stand By feature was availible if I wanted it. I recently bought 2 new Hard drives, WD 250GB Cavier/ SATA300/ 16MB, and set them up into a RAID 0 array. They did not cuase a problem as my system runs much better. 3 days later however, I encountered the problem that BattelFeild 2 did not run properly, so I reinstalled it. (I believe it was from copying files to my new RAID 0 array). Fixed the problem no hassle. To be on the safe side, I did a Repair reinstall of windows to make sure that no system files were corrupted in the transfer as well. (My computer would glitch randomly and close programs.) It wasn't until after the repair reinstall of windows, did I encounter a problem.

The Problem: My computer now runs smoothly, except for when I power down. I get the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer" along with winXP Logo and I am forced to shut down my computer manually. Also, when I click "start" "turn off computer" I no longer have the option to stand by.

My laptop often suffers from BSOD after windows updates, and I grin and bear it until it stops, in 2 or 3 days, which it has always done in the past. However, this is insane. Since my computer installed updates last Saturday, I have not been able to put it to sleep or hibernate without having to subsequently do a hard restart, with the "windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" screen. I then get the little notice that normally shows up after a regular BSOD, detailing the issue, but it contains no details- it simply says windows was unable to find a solution for the problem. There is no expand option to see the details. Please note, I have not actually seen a BSOD. This is only happening when I put it into sleep or hibernate, in which case, it seems to get stuck, showing a glowing black screen or simply not powering off when told to. The only way I can get it to turn back on is to unplug it and remove the battery.

This also may be related- Sometime around Saturday, my battery went dead, as they are want to do after 2 years. Currently, I am keeping my laptop plugged in at all times, with a 60% battery that won't charge to protect me from bumps to the power cord while I wait for my new one.

Was just wondering if anyone has encountered a problem like this before. I have a system that hangs when I click the "Turn Off Computer" icon in the Start Menu to gain access to the "Standby" "Turn Off" and "Restart" buttons. After I click the "Turn Off Computer" button it will just sit there for several minutes with the hourglass until finally the menu will come up. I fixed this once before by removing some things from startup. This time I fixed it by killing the googletaskbar.exe. I then uninstalled the Google Taskbar and rebooted and still did not have a problem but suddenly it has returned! I have no idea what is going on, there is really nothing obscure that is starting up on boot or running. Anyone have suggestions??

Hi, my computer keeps freezing when I shut it down, specifically at the screen where it displays "Saving Your Settings"

The error report from this are as follows
Event ID : 1524

Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
I searched for solutions to this and one of the common ones were downloading and using UPH Clean. I have version 1.6 and enabled the logs for it. I check the logs and it starts up successfully at every start up but sometimes when I shut down, my computer still freezes at "Saving Your Settings" (forcing me to use the reset button or hold down the power button)

I can do a lot more with those than I can from your description.

I have the most recent logs from UPH clean
Event ID: 1501

The following handles opened in user profile hive ADMIN-9F1868CAD\Administrator (S-1-5-21-1606980848-2111687655-725345543-500) are preventing the profile from unloading:

What are these logs telling me and what should I do?

I have upgraded 5 machines and clean installed 3 machines.

Experienced an issue with one machine with continuous corruption problems

After the 3rd attempt I discovered that even with a Clean Install of Win 10 I get unrepairable errors - Sorry I don't have screen captures of the "exact" wording:

(Just to be clear, I have not installed ANYTHING ELSE, other than Windows 10 and the corruption is unrepairable immediately)

Heres what I did to find the issue;

Open CMD in Administrator (type cmd in Cortana search bar, RIGHT CLICK and select "Run as Administrator")

After using command:

sfc /scannow

Windows reports errors which cannot be repaired

Running the following command should repair the issue:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

BUT DOESN'T - You get this message:

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

The source files could not be downloaded. Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature.

For more information, review the log file.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I have tried a few different options, including mounting the ISO and directing the DISM command to look directly on the mounted drive

Hi, as with many I have upgraded to Windows 10 today and it is going well except for the fact I am unable to save any files or create new ones in the Documents and Pictures folders or any sub-folders within these folders, and I have no idea why it is doing this. For instance, I tried to save an image created in paint and attempted to save it in the Pictures folder, it gave me the error message seen in this picture below:

Note, I am the only user on the system, and also the admin account so I do not know why it says this. Clicking Yes on the box does nothing and the same thing still occurs afterward. In addition, bringing up the right click menu and going to new only allows me to create a new folder, and the windows admin shield icon appears next to it. Deleting files also prompts me to ask for admin permission but in that case I can simply click the continue button and it goes through. Any advice?

Answer:Unable to create or save files in "Documents" and "Pictures" folders

Open the folders properties and got to the security tab and change permissions for your account, if you can't change permissions take ownership of the folder, if you can't take ownership of the folder activate the super administrator account and change permissions and/or ownership.

There are lots of guides on how to do all of that if you need more detailed steps.

Hi

After i have removed some spyware/trojans I starting getting this error message when I try to access the eventlog:

event log "unable to complete the operation on" eg. system "the interface is unknown" windows xp.

Also I can add programs to Symantec internet security 2005 firewall, reinstalling don't fix it. Some programs also start to fail, "bad image" or you don't have admin premissions.

Reinstalling SP2 or using system restore for XP don't fix any thing.

I have scanned my computer with 4 antispyware programs, and 4 antivirus programs and check it with hijackthis so my machine should be clean.

Does any one have any Idears?

Answer:event log "unable to complete the operation on" "the interface is unknown" windo

maybe you removes something with hijackthis which your system needs

go to start, run and type "sfc /scannow"
then it will rpompt you for the XP CD, put it in and let it scan your computer for corrupted or missing files

Hey,
I have a Windows Xp Prof. Sp2
Dell Latitiude D600

I'm connected on a dialup and this is what Im trying to get my computer to fully shutdown in the minutes i specify (ex:60minutes) I sometimes leave the computer on at night and don't want it to be still on when i come back...Something to make it automatically shutdown

I got a program that shuts down the computer automatically. And it works...My computer shuts down but in the end it gets stuck at "It is not safe to shutdown your computer" I don't want it to do this, because then someone needs to press the power button to fully shut it down.

Is there a way to make it so I don't come to this? Also..
When I start up I see my username and a password box. I don't have a password so I just press enter in the password box, is there a way to make it so it doesn't ask for my blank password everytime I turn it on?

I can't find where to play with these settings.
If anyone can help...Help pls!!!

thanksss

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee.exe

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee1.exe

- Error loading H:/Archiv~/GBPLUG~/gbiehcef.dll. Couldn't find specific module.

Please help me solve this terrible problem, it is really getting me on my nerves! (oh, and if this helps, I've recently donwloaded this so called "Limewire acceleration", and whenever I ran the setup, it didn't work. I don't really remember the name of the website I downloaded it from, sorry...)

I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. I have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, none of which has help. I am running Window XP w/SP2. Any other suggestions would be certainly appreciated. Hope to here from someone soon. MTCS, out.

Answer:I cannot open "my computer" "control panel" "recycle bin", etc...

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

Strange thing happened. I did a clean install of XP Pro on my Dell and now I always get "It is now safe to shutdown your computer" when I power it down. I was running 98se and it always shut down by itself so I'm sure the bios supports this as some have suggested to me.
Can anyone speak to this issue and help me resolve it?
Thanks so much and may God bless,
Peter

When turning on my (relatively) new windows 8 laptop, all I see on the login screen is a greyed out "locked" where the password input field should be, and a message above it that says "this app is preventing shutdown" with a generic icon next to it. Looking online, i'm told that i need to start safe mode to solve the problem, but the power button in the login screen has been replaced by a "sign in to install important windows updates" message.
Please help, as I really have no clue what to do at the moment.
Thanks in advance

I have followed the 5 steps to take prior to posting a thread:

After startup, when I get to the desktop I receive the following message in the tray:
"Your Computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection. It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from sysware".

Within 10 seconds the PC automatically restarts and the above will repeat without end. I don't even have enough time to open the task manager prior to the restart, the screen just goes black immediatley and it starts up from a complete shutdown.

It runs scan disk and when I load windows back up, it comes with this error in the included JPEG below (attachment):

So this is what's happening, I just ordered a few case fans from Newegg. These are the fans I got, COUGAR CF-V12HP Vortex Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing (Fluid) 300,000 Hours 12CM Silent Cooling Fan with Pulse Width Modulation - Newegg.com

Now my problem is that when I shut down my PC everything seems to still be running, all fans are running, the LEDs on my one LED fan are still on, and my DVD drive bays still open and close. I can hear everything in the PC still moving like its fully on yet my monitor "goes to Sleep" and wont come back on until I reboot it. Which when I do reboot it shows the whole standard windows startup screens with the post screen and all.

I've never had this kind of problem before I installed the fans, normally if I shut it down everything would shut down, but it just seems like it don't want to. It does disconnected my other PCs from reading off the homegroup like its actually shut off.

I don't know why it's doing this, I have the two new fans plugged in through the connectors it came with that adapt it to get power from the PSU, don't know if that's the cause though. Just looking for some insight on how to make it actually shut off when I shut it down. Not having to go and hit the power switch on the PSU

Answer:Computer stays "running" after shutdown.

You are choosing start and shut down, correct ?

Never heard of this b4.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this thread and I appreciate any advise that I can get. Here's my problem.

I have a dual boot machine, both os are XP Professional W/Sp2
One I use to record and work on music, never connect to internet, never ran updates other than sp2.

the other I use for everything else. This os occasionally freezes when trying to access "My Computer" to access the hard drives, and often freezes on shut down on the "Windows is shutting down" screen. only thing I know is that when it freezes, I can go to the task manager and it says "My computer not responding" and I have to often hit the reset button on the machine, then it's normal after it reboots. I've tried reinstalling the window's software 2 times and both times after a clean install, the same problem...even before I install most of my other software and fully update windows. Here's the catch, it has NEVER happened while logged into the OS that I use to record my music with. I've guessed that maybe one of my 3 hard drives may be failing, but can't find anything to support that, they all seem to be fine. Any recommendations or any further info is greatly apprciated.

Answer:"My Computer" Not responding and freezes on Shutdown

Recently, i got the same problem, only mine is I can't open any folders in computer including my computer, my document, recycle bin , control panel, etc.

I can't open my internet explorer so i have to use firefox...
I also tried to install windows but i knew i made some mistake cause now i have 2 different windows....
IF i accidentely open those, my computer will freeze and all i can do is open windows task manager ( altctrlf4 ) and then log off ( which take like 1 hour everytime )

LAST Night, i was just trying to scan all my computer and guess what ? I found about 33 viruses... I mean OMG....well it's mostly just adware, although have 2 or 3 trojans, i guess.... Then i deleted it....

After that, i restart my comp and guess whattt ???

EVERYTHING BACK TO NORMALLLLLL...... i CAN use my computer as it is brand new.... I was so happy...

So, my recommendation is try to scan it... use good scanner..
I use kasperskay....

Hi,

I just tried to install the latest iTunes update, but keep getting an error when it tries to access the C:\Program Files\iPod folder.

When I try to access the iPod folder directly through Windows Explorer, I get "Access is denied".

The same happens when logged in with the system administrator account.

When I right-click the folder and choose Properties > Security, the Current owner field shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow either of the listed administrator accounts to take ownership.

When I choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner, the Current owner field also shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow me to Edit it either.

I've tried opening the Command Prompt as the administrator, and deleting the folder, but it won't allow me to do that either.

Any ideas on how to forcefully take ownership and/or delete this folder?

Answer:"Access is denied" - "Unable to display current owner"

Check in the file security tab that there isn't a deny entry for the user group "everybody"

Just wondering if this is expected behavior, we've just completed upgrade from v1.7 to v1.8 (all gateways successfully updated) however we notice that we are unable to open our console site. Not sure if this is expected because we intentionally
ran a "partial" update and will not see new data for 3 weeks (- but we'd expect to at least see our splash page for ATA, we don't just a blank white page) or if we need to take further steps.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi All,

My W8.1 laptop has recently started going to "Locking" mode when I press the power button (on the machine) and/or select "Shutdown" from the start menu. I've checked the power settings and the PC is definitely set for shutdown as opposed to some other function such as sleep, hibernate, etc.

So basically after I click or press the power button, the screen schows "Shutting Down" (as would be expected) but after a few seconds changes to "Locking". Once the operation is complete I'll need to tap any key (to wake it up) and then click shutdown from there. Only then will the machine fully shutdown.

I'm not sure how this behavior began but I haven't been able to trace it back to 3rd party software. ANy thoughts or solutions appreciated! Thanks.

Hi guys, I've had this problem for 2 days now, whenever I shut down my PC, it gets to the screen where it says "Windows is shutting down" and it freezes there, or so it would seem, i have left it for hours in this state and nothing happens.

I am currently running Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

System Specs:

Processor: 2.40 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo
Main Circuit Board: Foxconn 965X7AA FAB1.2 Bus Clock: 266 megahertz
320.06 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
239.47 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
RAM: 2048 Megabytes Installed Memory
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT

Sorry if I left anything Important out, I'm a complete deadhead when it comes to computers.

All I've tried so far is a system restore, but that didn't work because the computer cannot shut down properly.

Thanks, Crazy_guy

Answer:Computer "Freezes" at Shutdown

Shutdown problems in Windows XP can be caused by many factors, just like earlier versions of Windows. These included: a damaged exit sound file; incorrectly configured, damaged, or incompatible hardware; conflicting programs, or an incompatible, damaged, or conflicting device driver.

can u tell the hardware or software u just added before this complaint.

If u have an NVIDIA driver try: In Control Panel >Administrative Tools>Services, stop the Nvidia Driver Helper service.

Im hoping this is actually a software problem rather than hardware but it might be due to a recent power supply I installed in my computer. The new power supply is a Thermatake TR2-430w.

Problem: When I use start menu, turn off computer, turn off, my computer goes through the normal shutdown prociedure then powers off for aprox 1.5 seconds then reboots as if it had just been turned on.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

Hi..after a crash of the server (win2000,exch2000) we've copy the Mdbdata in another PC.
Reinstalled Windows 2000 Server and Exchange 2000 Server.
Now we're trying to mount the mailbox store (Priv1.edb 5 GB) but we receive this error:
The database files in this storage is inconsistent.
So, following the MS article n. 327156:
Eseutil.exe says that we have a "Dirty shutdown" database
"Eseutil /p" remains in "stand by" on "repair damaged database" step at 90% (the day after was still at 90%).
Any suggestion will be very appreciated....
Thanks in advan?e to everybody.

Answer:Help.... Exchange 2000 priv1.edb recovery: Dirty shutdown, eseutil /p remain in "stand by" on "repair

Have just spent most of this week getting our e2k server up and running again. What about backups? We spent 2 days running eseutil /p and isinteg - finally got the information stores mounted but found approx 50% of users had absolutely nothing in their accounts.
Then resorted to restoring from backup (we used MS backup)- was surprisingly straightforward and hassle free.
If you haven't backups and eseutil /p will not run you will need to try a eseutil /r to get the databases into a 'consistent' or clean shutdown state before it will let you run the /p option. Our database was 12Gb and the /p took 8 hours to run. After that you'll need to do an isinteg - but be aware there can be significant data loss.
Good luck. Lots of help here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t25426221-restore_emails_from_edb_file

In the start menu search box I searched "Computer" and dragged and dropped it onto the main start menu. Now when I right click and select "Remove from list" it doesn't get removed.
The item isn't listed in:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu
I had "Don't show this item' selected in the start menu properties for "Computer", so I didn't realize I could have another way of displaying it prior to my putting it on the start menu.
I ran SFC and a new user account does the same thing.

Answer:Unable to Remove Pinned "Computer" From Start Menu

Hello James,

Could you post a screenshot showing this to help make sure if it's pinned to the Start Menu (above line), or just a recent program in the Start Menu (below line)?

If it's in the pinned to area, then it may just be a remnant registry entry causing it to still be listed even though it's not in the Start Menu folder in your post. You might give the tutorial below a try to completely reset the Start Menu pin to area to see if that will remove it for you.

Start Menu - Reset Pin To Area

Hope this helps,

I wish to send my CV to employment agencies using the "Browse your computer" file request prompt on their sites. It used to work but now when I click on the relevent WORD Doc on my system it pulls the file data:-
C:\Users\Chris\Documents\Documents 1\Job Stuff\CV 2.docx into their box which cannot be read by them. My system used to transfer files entitled CV.Doc. I have recently restored my PC to factory settings and this must have disabled such file transfers. Can anybody help please.

Answer:Unable to send WORD Doc to any site via "Browse your Computer" box

A better way would be to attach it as a PDF. Many firms wont open Word docs or links as they think them a source of malware. Also sending as a link leaves your computer vulnerable.

My other computer (Windows XP) is in BIG trouble, and I need urgent help. I was on Encyclopedia Dramatica, as it was the first thing that came up in a Google search. I've heard of it before, and I thought it wasn't dangerous, but I now know otherwise.

I looked at an article, laughed a bit, read on, looked at a video, then got sick of the disguisting advertisements, so I clicked one of my bookmarks (using Google Chrome) to leave the site. Then, some very large window appeared. It said something along the lines of "warning:virus! click here!"

The instant it popped up, McAfee appeared to warn me it was a virus (as if I didn't know). It said it was a "generic trojan" or something along those lines. I clicked "okay" on McAfee's confrimation that the virus was blocked. However, the warning popped up again.

I knew something was wrong, because the trojan window wasn't gone, and apparently it was trying to download something still, because McAfee appeared again (or at least that's what I think). So I press CTRL+ALT+DEL... It doesn't work. Oh crap, this just got real.

When I tried to get the task manager to work it said in a pop-up "task manager disabled by administrator" I just pressed the power button, I didn't want to get any deeper into this. However, as everything was closing, I noticed something like, I forget what it was, but it was something like a free trial that tried to download, and someth... Read more

Hello,

I have a custom-built PC using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. After I come home at night or get up in the morning while leaving my computer on during the day or night (i.e., computer has been on and idle for ~8hrs), I find that the computer has entered some sort of sleep mode from which I cannot awaken it. I moved the mouse, pressed every key on the keyboard (keyboard LED came on when I did that), and I pressed the power button as well. Eventually I had to switch off the power supply. Upon reboot it says "Resuming Windows..."

I thought I had turned off hibernation (Set it to Hibernate After: Never)
This is super annoying.

Anyone know how I can prevent this in the future?

Many thanks.

Answer:Unable to wake up computer, rebooted and "Resuming Windows"

Turn off hibernation, turn off sleep. Shut down the pc manually.

Some MB`s are funny like that. Has yours always behaved this way or is it something new ?

My XFX board behaved like that, my new MSI board goes into sleep and I just push the power button and bam, my computer is back up in 3 seconds, I love it.

afternoon everyone, here goes the first post.

i have what has become a very frustrating problem with a pc. it is one a friend has given to me to fix but i'm not having much luck at this point. the pc is riddled with various malware/viruses and i've managed to clean the majority off. there is obviously some still laughing at me on there though because i am unable to access the control panel, this is either from the start menu, typing in the run textbox "control.exe" or navigating to C:\windows\system32\control.exe.

This is the admin account of the pc.

Following instructions I have found on this forum and others i have run a scan using hijackthis which is posted below.

I'm not sure exactly what I was doing when I noticed a problem last night. Thought (erroneously) that it was my mouse button at first, not allowing me to open up shortcuts and icons on my desktop.

So, problems with my shortcuts and the fact that the taskbar had disappeared was what I first noticed as a problem.

I looked up a fix on-line and ran the linkfile_fix (from zip file) I found. That seemed to cure the problem. Shortcuts worked, and when I asked that the taskbar show, it did,and stayed there. I restarted.

I checked icons and then noted that I was unable to open My Computer and other folders on the desktop, but the shortcuts were fine. I was also unable to access the functions in the Start Menu (except Run). I'm not really sure if those were working specifically before I ran the fix, though the shortcuts were definitely not working.)

I came across a post that seemed similar to this problem (but now I am not able to find it again) and so I followed the instructions for Mal-ware removal that your forum describes. I installed and ran everything as directed. I am attaching only 4 logs, as the TDSSKiller program found no problems and did not create a log.

In MalWare Bytes, there were two items found and removed.

I am running XP for a Tablet PC. I have Norton 360 for antivirus. I have Norton Utilities 14, which I did run some thing earlier this past week to clean files and registry. I didn't notice any immediate difference, thoug... Read more

I have a Surface pro4 running Win10 Pro.

Today's lock screen is a nice winter scene, but it is marred by some "ads" that i didn't ask for nor do I want them on my screen. (for a photo visit: http://imgur.com/a/njoVt) The "ads" are links to the Microsoft store.
Ok, technically it's not the lock screen, because i've already logged in, it's the screen that comes up after the tablet has gone to sleep, but it looks the same as the lock screen. I just don't have to give my password, but i think that just my own settings. I don;t know what this screen is really called, if it's different from the lock screen.

Also, technically they are not advertisements, they look like holiday messages from Microsoft, but they are links to the Microsoft store so it's forced marketing. Most of all I did not ask for them to be there.

I tried looking for a way to turn of "ads" on the lock screen and it looks like there's an option on the lock screen configuration that i am missing. I don;t have the option outlined in these instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/243263/how-...0-lock-screen/

Now this problem is a real head scratcher for me, and I doubt anyone can help, but I was wondering if anyone has come across this.

I am running an IBM Thinkpad R40. ON occasion, the caps lock button will act as if it is on, when it will in reality be off. There is a light up on the monitor that shows when it is on and off, and the light will show "on", but it will be acting as if the caps lock button is "off". This makes it impossible to type in web addresses. because I cannot type up a period, only an ">".

Two other problems I started having. In Eudora, I will press the send button as I hold down the shift key, and an option window will pop up that will allow me to send the e-mail at a later date. But lately, I have just been pressing the "download mail" button, and the option window pops up as if I am already holding down the shift key, but I am not.

Last problem. I will try to highlight and copy, and there are times when I cannot seem to control the touchpad. I will highlight something, then will try to reverse it, take away the highlighting by pressing on the "mouse" button(I am not using a mouse, I don't know what you call it on a Thinkpad), and it will not reverse, it will not disappear like it should. In fact, it will not leave at all. In order to get rid of the highlighting, I will just have to click entirely out of the window.

I have contacted IBM, they tried getting back to me once, but were unsuccessful.... Read more

Mcafee says under "potentially unwanted programs" that they were "unable to delete" these malware programs. What are they and are they harmful to my system? How do I remove them if necessary? I am a bit of a novice so thanks for the help. THX, SK

Answer:"Generic PUP.z!ca" & "Generic PUP.x!ct" Mcafee - "unable to delete" after scan

Hi there.

Those are most probably false positives. What files are being detected as such?

When something is labeled "Generic" it means that McAfee doesn't know what it is but that it looks like something else it knows about.

Last week I was going about my usual business on Photoshop when my computer screen flickers out and reappears with the BSOD. It restarts and shows me an error screen that says "Your computer was unable to restart" and "Attempting repairs", found here: Software Bloopers - Microsoft Windows 7 Pro - YouTube

After this screen shows up a few times over the course of an hour without resolution, I reinstall Windows 7 and reformat my computer. I had all my files backed up so it wasn't a problem. I didn't have any errors for a week when, just a little while ago, the same process happened where I BSOD'd again and got the same "Your computer was unable to restart" error. This time, however, the computer rebooted and took me back to the desktop. I BSOD'd one more time and it fixed itself again, but I'd like to get to the root of the problem. Attached is the error report and I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 on a 2 year old Alienware. Thanks so much for any help!

When the message shows it will let me click ok without putting my administrater password, (which I have no idea what it is anyway!) I have tried to change screensavers and all (my official screensaver is my pictures slideshow) but I have no clue at what to do! Can someone help me with this problem? I have windows xp pro. And I can't figure out how it did all this!
Thanks for reading, Harley Babe

Answer:Administrator Unable to Unlock a "Locked" Computer

That you can click okay without entering a password and have it work just means that you do not have a password on your account.
As they say, the problem is caused by a bad screensaver.
You need to remove that one.
Have you tried changing the screensaver to none and then change all settings to always on ?
Did you do the registry edit microsoft tells you to do there?
What about boot to safe mode and change the screensaver?

How can I restore the Services & the Local Users account without having to reinstall my whole computer? I am afraid I will loose lots of files... you can see what the default was and manually restore it. I have tried to copy and paste it below

After cleaning up a horrible experience with a virus, I still have a problem remaining. When I goto "My Computer" and look for my ROM drives, they're not there in the section "Devices with removable storage". They used to be E: and F:. I can access them by running commands from the "Run" prompt, but cannot view any content. I've removed them from the "Device Manager" and rebooted. The results were that they still didn't show up on my computer but were reinstalled on the device manager. I also checked into the "NOIDE" claim but to no avail. I have 2 issues that have shown up on my PC.

HJT Log follows the description of both issues.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i (7732/A12), Vista Ultimate w/SP2, 2GB RAM. Security is Windows Live Onecare. All O/S patches up-to-date.

Issue 1: Random Sound

Periodically the system will start playing random sounds. The sounds have been song clips, or synthesized cat meows. Not files from my computer (heaven forbid!). If I close my browser (Firefox 3.0.11), the sounds will stop. I have already checked Firefox add-ons, which are: "Down Them All", "Move Media Player" and "Speed Dial". All are up-to-date.

Issue 2: Random "lock computer and go to login screen"

If I leave my computer for a short time (less than 5 minutes) periodically the system will lock the computer and go to the login screen.

I am not talking about a system / browser / application lock-up.
I am talking about the system leaving the user logged in, but going to the login screen. To get a visual of what I am talking about, press <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> and select "Lock This Computer" (or press windows-L).

Screen saver is set to "None".
Current power plan is "Timers off (Presentation)"

If I have not been specific enough, I greatly apologize.

I am very grateful to all of you who volunteer to help.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

Have copied the "Pro_highres" files to my computer and deleted the smaller "Pro" files on the phone (Lumia 930) in order to save space. The larger files can be opened on the computer even without the presence of the smaller files. While the phone is connected to the computer it is still possible to see the file names of the highres files on the computer screen but not on the phone - and again - I can not copy them from the phone to the computer nor open the files. What has happened and how to I get access to these photos??!! Thanks for any help!

Answer:Unable to see, copy or open the "Pro_highres" photo files after deleting the smaller "Pro" files?

Use File Browser on your computer to rename them to the file name of the 5MP version.
I'm finding that manipulation of the High Res jpegs from Lumia Camera on the phone is just not worth the blasted efforts. Shoot 5MP + High Res DNG and put Rawer on your phone. Then shoot your High Res jpegs in ProShot or Camera360 Sight and access them as normal through Camera Roll.

I have Corsair K60 keyboard that doesn't come with Restart and/or Shutdown buttons. Is there a way I can assign a Restart and Shutdown command/function/shortcut to a key/button of my preference or a combination of keys? I could use a rarely or never-used button like "Pause/Break" for this purpose. If it is possible, please let me know how to do it!

Thanks!

Answer:"Restart PC" & "Shutdown PC" buttons?

I don't have that keyboard so I'm not sure if this can be done, but you could try assigning a program (more specifically, a batch file) to a key(s).
create a batch file with this command: shutdown /r /f /t 0 (this will restart the pc)
to shutdown, substitute the r with an s.

PM me or reply to the thread if you need more specific instructions in creating the batch file(s).

Which one should I do? I originally wanted to just do "Return computer to factory condition" but Theog just suggested "Use A System Image Created Earlier." I have no idea what to do. So confusing!

Answer:"Return computer to factory condition" or "Use A System Image Crea..."

Hello M4TE and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just came across your question.

Most newer manufactured computers have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. The manufacturer provides specific instructions on how to access that partition in case you want to restore your machine to the exact condition it was in when it left the factory. That means you'd have to go through the time consuming process of cleaning out factory bloatware (like free trials of programs you'll never need), installing programs you do need, updating everything, creating your personal settings, etc. Here is a general idea of how to access the hidden recovery partition.

HP Recovery From Partition

Let's say it took you a day or two to set up your machine to your liking using the hidden recovery partition. A System Image is like a snapshot of your entire hard drive. It will include everything from the operating system to all your programs, files, photos, music, all updates ... everything. Most folks keep it on a separate external hard drive. Let's say a week later you get a virus or your machine crashes for some reason. You can use that System Image to return your machine to the exact condition it was in when you made the image. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so and you're back in business. It's a lot faster and more convenient to only worry about a week of updates compared to probably months with the hidden recovery partition. The newer a System Image is the... Read more

Problem:

Everything was running fine until yesterday, when my PC crashed with the BSOD giving me the "IRQL not less or equal" error. I ignored it and carried on- which resulted in the computer crashing with "Memory management" blues whenever I started something that was not the browser (It later started crashing on browser start too).

I first thought it was the temperature - Memtest95 and GPUtemp said otherwise.

So I started testing the RAM (taking one DIMM out) with Memtest86- It passed 4 cycles, so I shut the PC down and put the other DIMM in.

When I turned the PC on again, there was no signal sent to my screen, and none to my keyboard (and the HDD light on the front of the case did not start blinking like usual). The fans were running, so I figured something might be wrong with the DIMMs I put in. I removed the graphics card and plugged the screen into the motherboard.

Now the screen gets a signal, background lighting starts up, and then it shuts down to hibernation again. This repeats itself until the machine is shut down manually.

I got no idea what to do.

System specs: http://pastebin.com/DQwejZLx
I can not post the Minidump folder, since the PC can't start and I did not back it up. Sorry.

Thank you for your help.

I am trying to rebuild by search index because my computer won't let me arrange items using the "Arrange By" option... However, when I try and load my indexing options to rebuild the index it will sit there and say "Waiting to receive indexing status". If I click the "Advanced" button it will freeze... I also receive an icon and loading display problem SEE PIC#1. Also when I click on "My Computer" it sometimes will sit there searching and it won't load. SEE PIC#2

I have tried the following:
1. Restarting the "Windows Search" service multiple times at different boots.
2. Deleting the files contained in the folder "C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR\". http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484025
3. Stopping the "Windows Search" service then I opened up "regedit". I went to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSearch, SetupCompletedSuccessfully" I changed the value from a 0 to a 1. Then I rebooted my PC. I then went back to the same key and changed it back to a 0 and rebooted my PC again.
4. Turning the "indexing service" on and off from the "Turn Windows Features on or off" menu.

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

Answer:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

Hello Russell,

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

Drives - Hide or Show Empty Drives in Computer Folder

Hope this helps,

I have a big problem here,
I have used my hard disk for 9month,
Yesterday when I watched movie on the half way,
My hard disk suddenly disfuntion,
And I thought my laptop problem due to always lagging so I restart my computer.
But after that I can't read my hard disk (WD)in my computer.
It can read in computer management there.

Ways I try:
1)I try to uninstall and reinstalled again,BUT it doesn't work.
2)I try to unchecked the hide folder and device at view.
3)I try to update the software BUT it still disfunction.
4)I try to use disk management and initialized it BUT there appeared CANNOT INITIALIZED Due to I/O device error.

Any solution for me ?

Answer:Hard Disk can't read in "my computer ", "initialized",I/O device error

The most usual cause is that the Hard Drive is beginning to fail. Back up your stuff. Go to the website of the manufacturer and test the drive.

Randomly, I received a blue screen stating something like "Client side encryption is not supported by the remote server even though it claims to"

After restarting, my computer failed to start normally.(I think it failed to load the operating system?) It went to some kind of auto repairing thing to fix itself in order to startup properly. But it failed.

Safe mode = same as above

Bootlogging? Debugging? Description was it would mention at which startup file it failed to load. It loaded files from the top of my screen to almost the middle, which is about < 10 things. It failed, and without telling me any new information, did the "same as above".

Hello,
My parents had recently packaged my computer in a box to move to another place. (Last time they packaged it, a dinosaur HP computer had a PSU failure...) Anyways, once we moved into the house, I set up my desktop and once I boot it up I came across Start Up Repair, saying my computer was unable to start. Would there be any fixes to this?
I own nothing of a Vista boot CD, a Linux/Ubuntu CD or any other boot items. I have not downloaded any malicious software nor have I gotten a virus.
EDIT: I have tried to do a System Restore, and it came up with this:
The disk Partition_1(C:) has errors.
Windows has detected file system corruption on Partition_1(C:). You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.
EDIT2: Now when I try to boot, it just says BOOTMGR cannot start. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart. (Or something like that.

Answer:"Your computer was unable to start"

In Startup Repair select the Command Prompt option.

Type "chkdsk /r" (without the quotes) and press Enter
If it asks to reboot, tell it OK and let it reboot.
chkdsk /r will run and you'll see the results on the screen.

If that doesn't fix it, then try this:
I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:

Hi,
Out of nowhere, I recently started getting this message whenever I boot my computer. It takes awhile to process through the system restore and then everything works fine...until I boot it again and it does it all over again. Any clue what could be causing this? Thanks for your help!

Answer:"Your computer was unable to start" help!

When do you get the message? During booting time or after the booting is over. It would appear that you do eventually reach the Desktop after the booting is over otherwise how do you do the System Restore?

Please explain your problem a little more in detail.

Hi guys. I've met a really big problem with my computer. Firstly, when I am using the adminstrator account of the computer, and I click on anything that attempts to open "My Computer" or files in there, a runtime error appears which tells me that the "Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe" has "requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." Then when i click the "OK" button, everything blanks out for awhile (leaving only the wallpaper) and then returns back to normal after like 2 seconds.

When I use accounts other than the administrator's, everything seems to be working fine. I am able to click on My Documents or My Computer and the window pops up like it's supposed to. The only problem is when i press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, a box appears and says that "Task Manager has been disabled by the adminstrator".

Pls help me with this huge problem. Thanks so much!

When you choose lock the taskbar, it does stop you from resizing sections of it but it doesn't stop you from doing other things, like re-arranging icons in the quicklaunch folder.

Is there any way I can lock the icon layout in quicklaunch? Sometimes I might accidentally drop something in there when I meant to be dragging it to do an "open with", or I might accidentally click as I'm moving my mouse over the icons and it drags an icon to a different position and I have to figure out where to drag it back to, and in the most bizarre Windows feature ever ... if I then shutdown and startup, despite having moved that icon back to it's original position, after startup it'll be back to the wrong position (that it only spent 3 seconds being in by mistake).

Currently I just have a screenshot of my icons and have to use that as reference to keep them in the places I want them. Example ( imgur.com/UjltgAh ):

Answer:"Lock the Taskbar" doesn't really lock it, how can I truly lock it?

This seems like it will do what you want if the bottom icon is considered the thumbnail but I think they mean the aero peek thumbnail.

I recently upgraded to Office 2010...all was fine until recently i had this weird problem in Power Point '10.

I added an Entrance effect to a picture quite easily...but when I tried to add an Exit effect I found out that the Entrance effect was being overwritten in the "Animation Pane".
Again on re-adding the Entrance effect..the Exit effect was being overwritten.

FYI this is happening with everything (pics, text boxes, smart art).It seems you can't add two different effects to the same item.
It should be noted that I experienced no such problems with Power Point 2007...there the Entry and Exit effects were added in separate lines in the Animation Pane.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I didn't really know how to google for this (although I did), so I didn't find anything proper and like to ask you: How do I remove the "labels" from drive types in "Computer" window? What I mean:
These labels above the different drives are really annoying, as I'm accustomed at one item after another and somehow one could change it to that view in every OS every since (XP, Vista), but now it doesn't seem to work? (I tried all the context menu items )

Any ideas? Thanks for your help in advance, much appreciated!

Kind regards
