Preferred Solution: Auto lock, unlock and shutdown

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Auto lock, unlock and shutdown

1) What do you want to automate? Lock? Well, you can use also the windows key+L (the L key). To unlock, you have to press ctrl+alt+del and enter the username and password (username, in case you want to log off the user which locked the computer). You can't automate this -- but you can disable the lock option (why do you want to do it?). Are you in a domain? Then talk to network administrator/system administrator. It's your home computer? Then use the simple logon options, without passwords.A simple way to lock the computer it's to set the computer to lock when enters in screen saver mode.2) For shutdown at a specified time: you may create a bat file, which should contain a line like:shutdown -s -f -t 60(see shutdown command in windows)And then, add a new scheduled task which runs that bat file at the specified time.

My laptop won't automatically rotate when I rotate it. The rotation lock button in the action centre is greyed out so I cannot select it. This is the same in the display settings, I am unable to unlock the rotation lock. I have searched for answers on this and people have advised to select the 'allow auto-rotation' however I cannot find this setting in my control panel. Switching to tablet mode does nothing either. The laptop also does not sense the screen has been rotated around and so the keyboard/mousepad are still active even when the laptop has been moved to a tablet. I am within warranty so will just replace laptop if I can, but want a quick solution for now!

I was trying to help a friend w/ his laptop w/ Vista (which I have not used before) and when we shut it down, I accidently hit the LOCK icon and closed the lid. When he tried to restart, the system appears to come back up, but then the screen goes black. I tried CTL-ALT-DEL, but nothing happened, still black screen, but there is lots of disk activity going on. We did a hard shutdown (holding power button down) and rebooted, getting an error screen and then booting in safe mode. Can do that, but don't know what to modifiy or try and change. He says he never created a password, has only one account on the computer which is an administrator account. When we reboot into std OS, same old thing, black screen after just a flash of the main screen. HELP????

Whenever I press Win-L, it locks to my welcome screen and stays locked like that, even if my screensaver comes up. But when my computer automatically locks after 5 min. it goes to the "Unlock this Computer" dialog box.

Is there anyway to change the auto-lock to my welcome screen?

My computer has been like this for the past months, every minute, every hour, every seconds. it reboots, shutdown, and hibernate automatically, and sometimes wait for around 5-10mins before it my pc turn on. I full scanned my computer but found nothing. Can someone help me?

Answer:auto reboot, auto shutdown, auto hibernate

You need to check Control Panel, Power Options. (screenshot)

Note the tabs. In this dialog you set your options and they are set for the Power Scheme shown. In Laptops, there are usually 2 schemes listed, one for AC powered and a separate for Battery powered.

Desktop OR AC powered Laptop, the only thing you MAY want to turn off is your Monitor.

I have managed to somehow put a lock my computer. Now, everytime I leave it for just a few minutes I have to enter my password to get back in. How do I disable this feature?? I am using WinXP. Thanks.....

Answer:Lock/Unlock computer

Change power settings to not prompt for a password after resuming from a screen saver or sleep mode.

How does one accidentally put a lock on their own computer that they didn't want there? Usually the Lock / Unlock options appear on company computers for security purposes. That's not the case here, right?

Hey guys, Just got my W530 and its a great machine except for 2 things. The battery looseness which I have read is normal for one. The other problem is that I cant eject my hard drive bay adapter that came configured with it. The lock position from "lock" to "unlock" will not move and I have used considerable force. Any more and I feared breaking the plastic. Does anyone know any tricks to get this open, is it is just a matter of force? I have seen videos on the net where they open quite easily. Thanks alot.

Answer:Lock on bay adapter will not unlock

Did you order the W530 with RAID enabled? If so, there is a screw the hole next to the unlock slider that prevents the slider from accidentally moving.

Now when any button is pressed the computer makes a beep sound and does nothing.

There is also an onscreen keyboard which can be used with the mouse.

What I'm asking is if there is a way to Lock the Keyboard similar to locking a cell phone and How to unlock the keyboard.

Hi,

At work i have a windows 7 based pc that is joined to a domain. Now what happens is this:

1. I login to the office domain.

2. I lock my pc

Now when i press ctrl+alt+del to unlock the pc it presents me with local pc user login. So i have to press switch user, click on the current logged in domain account and enter pasword to unlock. This happens every time when i lock my domain account. Is this the way that unlocking in Win 7, joined to a domain, works? In XP when i pressed ctrl+alt+del to unlock pc i just had to enter the pwd.

Can you give me a solution to this problem.

Thanx

Answer:Windows lock and unlock ambiguity

In Windows 7 it shows you what domain you are logging into. It should not be a local user account.

Guys last night I followed this tutorial on how to have the Recycle Bin show up on the taskbar: Recycle Bin - Pin to Taskbar and it worked great. But then like a complete idiot I deleted the Trash folder I had saved in directory I used to save it in. This of course ruined the whole procedure (hindsight is a great thing) and the "undo delete" function didn't restore any the functionality wither. So I decided to start from scratch. However, when I got to the part about right clicking the task bar and going to Toolbars-New Toolbar there was a menu entry for the Trash folder I had created earlier which was ticked. I unticked it and ever since then I can't lock or unlock the taskbar. I can tick and untick but it doesn't do anything. System Restore didn't fix it so I'm at a loss. I created a new user account to see if it worked from there and it does. So I thought maybe my user profile had become corrupt during the processes I outlined above and decided to follow the tutorial on how to fix an corrupt user profile here: Fix a corrupted user profile
But I can't copy the user files over as I keep getting an access denied/require permission message when trying to do so. Any advice lads? I should left well enough alone

Answer:Unable to lock/unlock the taskbar

try doing a system restore and then start again if you really want the recycle bin on your taskbar

I am on the prowl for a SIMPLE way of passwording any file(s) or folder(s) in the computer file hierarchy. Casual visitors snooping in my files while I might be away is the focus here. I took the problem to another forum (http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/lockingunlocking-folderfile?replies=26) and got an answer that is an alternative to what I am really hoping to find. Does anyone know of a passwording program that uses a file access request interceptor?

Here is an exerpt of the basic interest:

"I would like to be able to cruise through the file hierarchy in Windows Explorer or My Computer and right click on any file or folder, having the context menu give me a "secure" option. Clicking that would give me a password input blank which would be registered along with the file/folder name in the access interceptor's index. Upon entering the password in the input blank the closed file/folder would then become password protected. (Naturally, the "secure" option in the right click menu would have to be disabled when the password is input.) When the interceptor matched a request with an item in its index it would interupt the system from opening the item and present the user with password dialog. Successfully matching that input with the value in its index it would stand aside and let the system open or run the item. The last action is clearly exactly what Mylockbox does when the .exe is commanded to run. I guess a masterkey would also be required... Read more

So, issue that has just recently cropped up, and we have made no changes that would cause this.

We now have several users who, although able to initially log in off the WAN, cannot unlock the screen off the WAN. They receive a "No logon servers available" error.

This has never been an issue with XP. One user reports the issue didn't start until some time towards the end of last week. One of desktop support folks just received a report from a user today.

Now, I've tried duplicating the issue with my machines but simply cannot.

We have 2 other users with desktops who can duplicate the issue, though.

What would cause this?
The issue is not that they cannot log on; they can log on fine, initially. It's only the screen lock that appears borked. Therefore I wouldn't think the "Always wait for network at logon" GPO would be relevant, since the issue isn't at initial logon.

Ideas? I've tried searching the Goog, but haven't had much success in finding info on this particular issue.

Edit: This is in a domain environment. No GPO modifications have been made since June, and this issue just recently started cropping up.

I have a customer who has a Windows 8.1 laptop at the house that he uses to remote into the office, and this system is in a workgroup. The problem is that if the user locks the laptop or it goes into standby, as soon as CTRL-ALT is pressed, the screen
says "Locking" and never gives us a chance to log in. System restore won't complete successfully (I had a previous post in Technet to troubleshoot this, but restore was never successful). I've attempted SFC /scannow, and some corruption was found,
but the system wasn't able to fix everything. I've attempted to manually uninstall all updates and applications that were installed on or after this problem arose with no luck. I've attempted to run chkdsk /R, but it hangs at 10% - I left this running for
around 2.5 hours, and it never got any further, so I terminated the process. I am unable to lock and log back in with clean boot; however, I can lock and log back in with Safe Mode. I've also attempted to create a new profile, and the locking also occurs with
it. Does anyone have an idea as to what I might try? Thank you.

Fortunately, I am not experiencing the problems described by other users on this forum with the touchpad on my new AMD edge13. That said, the touchpad doesn't consistently pick up my finger movements, despite trying various sensitivity settings. This causes alot of frustration. That said, overall, I'm happy with my purchase. One great improvement would be the ability to lock the touchpad during the times I'm typing on the keyboard. The touchpad setting that allows accidental palm strokes to not-be-picked-up doesn't work well at all. The cursor is constantly causing problems while I'm typing. Can anyone advise if it's already possible to lock and unlock the touchpad via a keyboard shortcut, and if not, can this be added to future functionality? It would be a significant improvement.

Answer:Lock and unlock the touchpad via keyboard shortcuts?

It's quite hard to get any support from this forum......... Anyway I'd like to support anyone as possible as I can. Although I don't know any keyboard shortcut for that, there's another option. from control panel go to mouse properties. Under the Ultranav tab, check "Show Ultranav icon on the system tray". Than you can find the related icon in the task bar on your desktop with options to disable touchpad and trackpoint with a single click. Hope this will help. I had to find out this myself.....

Ok, so here's how it's not working; I'm trying to watch a DVD on WMP11. I start playing it, and I click on the little paddlelock icon in the lower right hand corner of the frame. It "unlocks" with a window to put in my 4 digit code, and I do so, then I click on the green check mark, and the paddle lock closes, and then I proceed to watch my movie. Roughly 12 minutes later, (usually while I'm into a good scene in the movie), the screen switches from "Full Screen" view, to "Normal Screen" view, and stays that way until I complete the whole process all over again. This continues throughout the entire movie.

I've eliminated my screen saver as an issue, (this was suggested to me by someone), and have uninstalled Faststone Capture, (this was a screen capture tool that was constantly "on" in the background, that was also suggested as a cause), but I do still have another screen capture tool installed, however this one, Jing, does not constantly run. It is just an application I can start when I want to.

Anyways, this is my issue with WMP11. Oh, before I forget, I'm running Vista Ultimate, on a 32-bit system. It's all on a Dell XPS410 w/ an Nvidea GeForce 8600 GT video card. And all drivers have been updated. Any other questions will be answered ASAP. Thanks in advance.

Hi Friends,

I have a DELL Inspiron 14R (N4110) laptop. Few days back I set BIOS password. Unexpectedly I forgot the password. While going to BIOS, my laptop is asking for password. I tried many times but unable to enter correct password. Can any one please tell me how to proceed further for resetting the password? Now there's unlock key hint number appearing.. please help so i can go to my bios settings..
Thanks in advance...

Answer:BIOS Lock. Unlock Key Hint Number appearing

I have the same exact problem with one of my Latitude D420 machines. The only catch is that I have followed the directions, but can not get the machine to read me external CD Drive or my thumb drive. I have been stuck as well. I would have hoped I could just dive into the machine reset the password in the CMOS and reboot. I forgot this is not an HP machine. Hope someone reads our troubles and has a good solution.

Hi ,
The Bitlocker autounlock for an External drive on my PC got disabled and it asks for Recovery key after i ran a PC Cleanup. It is not able to recognize my PC anymore. The worst part is i am not able to locate my Recovery Key.
I can try to recover files deleted by the cleanup tool but i am not sure which particular file stores the key information to help Bitlocker recognize my PC.
Please let me know if there is any other way i can unlock my Drive.
Thanks

hi, I have a strange problem .... a flashing lock/unlock icon (padlock which alternates form locked to unlocked) shows in the middle of my screen. The machine was built a few years back and hasn't changed significantly since then The symptom has just begun today - Sat Aug 6 my time) and only impacts Windows. The Linux install on this machine is unaffected I'm running Windows 7, with Office 7, both activated successfully (also running Open Office and Libre Office which were upgraded last week) I recently changed video card, about 3 weeks back suspect this is related to some sort of Microsoft security issue can't find any references on the web ... cant generate a screen shot (which suggests this is being inflicted by Windows itself) even with bitmap capture eg. snippy the icon is a very basic black and white padlock shape that stays right in the middle of the screen, is partly transparent and is visible no matter what programs are running - full screen games or windows applications I'm at my wits end with this ... no idea what's causing it or how to remove it any advice would be most welcome

I've just installed a "GateKeeper" (www.gkchain.com) which locks/unlocks the desktop based on my proximity to my desktop PC.

It works beautifully, but is a little odd when my display has gone into power saving mode whilst the desktop is locked... I approach the PC, and the desktop unlocks, and is ready for use, but the display stays blank as it is in power saving mode. I have to move the mouse (or press a key, perhaps) before I can see what I'm doing.

Is there some way to automatically bring the display out of power saving mode whenever there's a transition from locked to unlocked? I suspect this won't be possible, as there's probably no API for the power-saving mechanism. I certainly can't find any settings in power management that would control this behaviour.

Answer:Tying the display power settings with the lock/unlock functions.

No settings in GateKeeper? You can ask them if no one here knows.

Answer:G580 - Fn + F6 to lock/unlock touchpad doesn't work with Windows 10

I have the same problem. Untilthey update the ELAN driver I go in to Settings, Devices, Mouse and Touchpad, Additional Mouse Options and disabel  the ELAN driver. You can still turn it back on with Fn F6, but you have to go through the same steps again to turn it off. The nice thing is, it doesn't go back to enabled after awhile when you havent' been using the laptop.for awhile as it did before. The bad side is it takes about half a dozen key strokes to get to he disable. Hope this helps for now.

i want to make windows 10 able to play all of its sounds like back in the day, including login and log off sounds, lock and unlock sounds, shutdown sounds and constant startup sound without disabling fastboot. and yes i have did all those registry hacks to show hidden sounds again but they dont work anymore in these newer builds.

Answer:Can i FORCE or mod windows 10 to play all misc sounds? e.g lock/unlock

Hi, this looks like the sort of thing you need, but you refer to registry hacks... so these may be ones you've tried. I've no idea of course.

You might prefer to simply set up your own scheduled task to play a sound - e.g. for log on, lock- you can't set a scheduled task to run on log off.

Note that with MS continually tweaking and generally simplifying GUI features (less freedom to tweak) it may no longer be possible to do that. What's possible will also be build dependent.

I've not tried it, so you can see if any work for you and advise.

I have 2 storage hdd encrypted w/ bitlocker, in addition to the encrypted OS volume C:.

I activated auto unlock expecting the storage volumes to automatically unlock with the unlocking of C: (I enter the psw during boot since I don't have TPM). However they stay locked until I open them and manually enter their psw.

Looked everywhere on the internet for solutions but the problem is still here, so I'm posting asking for help.

Things to know:
- storage volumes are seen as removable, instead of fixed (I guess because ahci is set, so should be normal)
- the two storage volumes have been encrypted before encrypting C:, and have different psw from C: (shouldn't matter either, but you never know)

I am trying to figure out how to set Excel up to automatically unlock tabs after data is entered.

Ex: I enter data in cells on sheet 1 and sheet 2 is locked until all data fields are entered in sheet 1.
Sheet 3 stays unlocked until all data fields in sheet 2 are entered, etc.

I know nothing about macros, but I am fairly certain they will be needed to do this.

I have a dummy file with some simple data fields to be entered/unlocked on 3 sheets/tabs.

What a mess.

I attempted a homegroup between a desktop and a laptop. It all worked, but when poking around Properties applets, I found that the desktop Jim-GLH (Jim) no longer "owned" any of the shared folders. An "unknown account" was now owner. After playing around with right-click "share with nobody" and "share read with homegroup" "share read/write with homegroup", etc. I have some inconsistencies. Depending on what "level" you share (folder depth), which screen in Windows Explorer, etc., some strange things happen. I have since forced ownership back to Jim on Jim-GLH by using the SECURITY applet somehow.

As part of this, I now recall I was fumbling with trying to get ownership back and unchecked/checked the "inherit permissions" on these folders and got them mucked up. Luckily I just found this:

Remove Lock Icon on Folder in Windows 7

But as usual, there's a nuance. The poster of the webpage above says to hit OK 3 times. Evidently, you do NOT hit the APPLY button. So, I was able to remove the lock from the newly created test E:\Eshared folder (below).

I have since revoked the homegroup from both computers.

Desktop - Windows 7
Computer: Jim-GLH
User: Jim (no password, admin)

Laptop - Windows 8
Computer: Jim-Laptop
User: Laptop (no password, admin) - chosen so as to not confuse "Jims"

Answer:Windows 10 - FN key and touchpad lock/unlock button problem Satellite L675-11J

Fn keys require special Toshiba software which controls this notebook feature.

But the Windows 10 drivers are not published for this Satellite L675 series because its not Win 10 supported.

From my point of few this means that you could use the notebook in connection with Win 10 but without the functioning FN buttons.

Answer:My Nokia Lumia 930's power button has stopped functioning properly, and i can't lock or unlock my ph

Backups can get stuck when the old data is corrupt. You can go online to onedrive and view your backups and delete the old one. You'll then be able to backup with a fresh copy.
How old is the phone? If it's under 24 months, you cam send the phone away for repair. The button is probably not lined up with the actual button on the circuit board and would need to he put back into place.

Hey there,

I installed a program on 15th March 2009 called MyFolder Manager, which allowed me to password protect particular files or folders on my computer

It was a free program, and their help section lists this as their website, though it doesnt seem to be of any real help: http://virtual-protect.com/

I have a folder which contains ALL my passwords for accounts here there and everywhere, be they bank accounts, online casino/betting accounts, or just email accounts.

I've never had a problem with the program, but when i tried opening the folder today, i was met by a message reading:

"Location is not available
C:\Users\Zazkad\Desktop\Important Documents is not accessible.
Access is denied."

I've tried my best to find other ways at getting around this problem, but regardless of what i try to do, it won't let me access the files within that folder in any way. And i REALLY need access to that folder soon, it's really important to me!

I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter

Hope everyone had a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Zaz

I have updated my Lumia 920 to 8.1, from then sometimes my lock screen gets magnified and it would be impossible to unlock as the fullscreen is not viewed. The phone has to be restarted for this always.
Secondary, earlier I used to easily access the videos or movies stored in videos folder, but now if we try playing some videos through VIDEO app it displays a message "signing in....",then "logging in........", but not able to connecct and videos are not being played.
Kindly suggest what to do in the above issues.

damodar.

Answer:Lock screen gets magnified and unable to unlock the screen, videos stored manually not being played

Looks like you unlock your phone via double tap to unlock feature and accidentally turn on screen magnifier. To turn of screen magnifier , go to phone settings /ease of access / turn of screen magnifier.
For video , try to update the Xbox video app from windows phone store Video | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)

Is there a way I can make my computer automatically log in and then lock my account so that it does my startup programs automatically? (on Windows 7 x64)

Answer:Auto Logon and Lock

Hello Michael,

I haven't tried this, but I suppose that after you set your computer to log on automatically to a user account you should be able to do either option below.

Create a lock computer shortcut and place it in your Startup folder in the Start Menu for this.

OR

You could also create a task to run the lock computer shortcut at startup with or without a delay for this as well.

Hello,

I found a guide somewhere detailing the following instructions:
1) run "netplwiz" and uncheck "users must enter password..."
2) create a startup shortcut "rundll32 user32,LockWorkStation"

But, Raymond Chen says "Please don't do this. The LockWorkStation function was not designed to be run via Rundll32. To be run via Rundll32 a function needs to match a very specific function signature, which LockWorkStation doesn't. As a result, the stack is misaligned on return and what happens next is anybody's guess."

So, instead of that, I made a shurtcut for "tsdiscon.exe" which is goes into the switch user screen. Is that a proper way to do it, or is it improper like the runddl method above?

Answer:Auto Login and Lock

Hello Osomphane, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not certain what the purpose of this would be for. When an account is locked, you will have to enter the password anyway to unlock and log on to that account again anyway. It seems like it would serve the same purpose to just disable auto login and allow Vista to startup to the log on screen instead and to log in when ready. For sleep modes, you can enable the password protection on wakeup option to force a log in at wakeup to prevent unauthorized access.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

I was having issues getting my Windows 10 PC to actually require a password each time it woke up from sleep. what I want in other work equivalent to {start up without password and then automatic switch user or automatic win + L} but this time you need to enter a password to log in again.

I have "TweakUI for Windows XP" or "Powertoys for Windows XP", this take care of login without entering the password but computer still have to manually lock the computer or stay idle at least 1 min before it is locked

However, I want the computer to be locked immediately after start up and the startup programs load in the background.

Are you attached to a domain, and log into a domain account?

If you do, then the administrators have the auto lock turned on as part of their user script. Not much you can do about it, short of asking an administrator to lengthen it or remove it.

So I had a friend stay over a few days and had to enable the auto lock feature and ask for a password (yeah "had", I know). Before anything was changed I had power options set to turn off my screen after 10 minutes and not to ask for a pass on resume. Post friend visit I had screen set to power off like same cept ask for a password. Friend left and tried undoing my settings.

I currently have, under power options, Don't require a password selected, power off monitor to never, under group policy "Prompt for password on resume" set to disabled, and disabled password logon under userpasswords2. On the screen saver settings dialog then screen saver is set to none and the "On Resume, Display logon screen" is greyed out and CHECKED. Wait is currently set to 10 however after 1 minute windows autolocks. That started after my frustration with the issue and I changed a setting I can't find anymore. Setting wait to 9999 doesn't affect the 1 minute timer.

I don't want it to auto lock anymore and google found only 1 other person with a similar issue and no one had an answer. I can't figure it out and I fix computers for a living. Anyone have an ideas?

Answer:Unstoppable Auto Lock

Hi! Verdigo, welcome to W7F

The option:

Might be that way because you say you do not have a screensaver selected...Try selecting one, click Apply, and see what happens.

I know that you can set up windows to auto login the computer using "control userpasswords2" then you can tell it to log into the windows; therefore, allowing windows to continue booting the rest of the computer up.

Seeing that I want this on a server. I need the computer to log into the computer and then lock the computer right away.

Although great when you're on walkabout with your laptop, when I'm at home, laptop plugged in, I don't want my laptop to keep reverting to a login screen every few minutes. I'm on a Thinkpad E520 running Windows 64 bit Professional.     Here's what I tried so far without success: 1)  Control Panel --> Power Options --> I set everything to "max performance" and disabled display sleep-mode timers. 2) Control Panel --> Lenovo - Camera-enhanced security --> I turned off camera recognition features and related timers. 3) Control Pannel --> Lenovo Power Manager -->  I turned off all timers. Turning off options in the above control panel areas does not seem to affect the auto-protect feature.    This auto lock down feature is driving me nuts at home, the only consolation being that the fingerprint scanner makes it a little easier to get back in once the laptop goes down.    It's like some terrible screen saver you hate that can't be turned off. How is this auto lockdown feature turned off?   Ideally there should be a big button available in the taskbar which you can push: on - off.   That way you can easily turn timer suites on and off with a single action. But as of yet, I can't find anything in the control panel or taskbar that turns off this auto lock down feature.    Where is it?

Before I installed 10586, I had my computer auto lock Windows 10 10240 after a couple minutes without having the screensaver turn on, so it went to my custom lock screen wallpaper.
I can't figure out how to make it happen again in Windows 10586.
And also when I close the laptop lid, I want it to Lock when plugged in. No go to sleep or log off. Just lock.
Can anyone please help me out?

Answer:Auto Lock after 2 minutes without screensaver?

Nevermind, found it in gpedit.msc Interactive Logon: Machine inactivity limit.

We recently istalled XP onto our laptops, but the big problem we have is when you log on, it the laptop sets idle for fifteen miuntes, it locks forcing you to relog in. Can someone tell me where to go to set the time for longer than fifteen minutes. I have checked the registry and security setting and have not found it. Thanks

Answer:Windows XP user auto lock

Try going Control Panel >> Power Options >> System Standby (Change Value to desired)

My company has rolled out a policy that locks the computer after 15 minutes of inactivity. I want to remove this, because invariably it's locked, just when I need it. I have looked in gpedit.msc, and I found:

local computer poilcy\windows settings\security settings\local policies\security options\

microsoft network server: amount of idle time before suspending system: 15 minutes.

I tried changing this, but it is grayed out. I suspect there is an underlying registry setting that either controls this, or just does the auto lock by itself. Any help would be appreciated. I am running XP Pro, SP2.

I try to shut down my computer, the OS is windows XP Professional.

It goes to the normal shutdown screen. "Windows is shutting down" And then locks up... after a minute, all of my peripherals shut off (mouse and keyboard lights go off), and then it BSoDs me...

What kind of information do you guys need to help me out, ask and I will tell.

It's quite the nuisance not being able to shut down in an orderly fashion, and I do not know if it is having an adverse effect on my computer... For safety's sake, I would like to resolve this problem

Ask away to help me isolate and solve this problem,

-Olan

PS. I have reformatted once, and that did NOT solve this problem.
I have also taken apart the PC and put it back together. MY BIOS and drivers are up to date. And... I have the latest windows updates.

So, I have searched the internet for what I am trying to find but the only thing that comes up is how to add a timer that will turn the display off after a certain time WHILE the lock-screen is on. That's not what I am asking.

What I am asking is if there is a way to auto-lock the computer after a certain amount of time. I know you can activate a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and then once touched again it will show up at the lockscreen. That's not what I want. I have the lock-screen setup to play a slideshow of pictures that I want to play when not in use. (This is a 58" touchscreen display that is used to interact with a powerpoint presentation in a public area). If I leave the desktop screensaver option on, it'll turn off the lockscreen slides. Why does that matter if the slideshow is running you may be asking? Well, I have a script on the desktop of this computer that will lock the computer with a single click. This is because when someone is done doing a presentation, I want them to be able to lock the screen immediately so that when they walk away someone can't just walk by and start messing with a wide-open computer.

So, idk if this is possible or if someone has a better solution but i'd appreciate any input.

Hi, I want to use a photo of both my kids as my lock screen but it automatically crops the pic and ruins the pic, how do I stop this. I don't care if there is black at the top and bottom of lock screen, in fact it would help to see icons. Cheers

Yes, it has become quite the irritation, most recently! I can be in the middle of typing something, and all of a sudden, my screensaver lock engages. Sometimes it's worse than other times. I run FastAccess Face Login, but have concluded the program isn't conflicting, or causing the problem. My screensaver settings have been set accordingly, but I can't figure out why this happens. Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Screensaver auto-lock engages while typing!
