Preferred Solution: Will read DvDs and CDs Wont read Autoexe on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Will read DvDs and CDs Wont read Autoexe on

Have you disabled autostart? Can you start the program by clicking on the appropriate setup.exe file on the CD?

Make sure data cable is fully inserted at drive and motherboard. If that is OK and it does CDs but not DVDs then most likely is DVD laser or alignment US so send it back.

Evening, I have recently been testing out various OS's on my laptop and finally decided to revert back to Windows Pro.
It was working fine until a couple of days ago, but then the disk drive started to make a clicking noise as if the R/RW head was sticking.

Now it wont read CDs or DVDs, can someone please help and tell me if this is a software fault or a hardware fault and how best to fix it?

Answer:Satellite L30: drive wont read CDs or DVDs

It's a hardware problem, not because you changed the OS. A service could fix this problem (I think they must change the drive). I heard from another user, that he had problem with the optical drive. He had Panasonic (Matsu****a). If you have that type (not LG), maybe you have the same problem.

Answer:DVD drive wont read DVDs anymore

Hi

What you could try is to run this information HERE and the FixIT and maybe also the manual instructions.

DVD/CD drives these days dont really need drivers, off one does but in the main they do not the main issue in read/write issues is the upper lower filters as in the above link should fix or the drive is dead.

The DVR+/-RW on my father's "e-Machnes 5255" would read both CDs and DVDs fine until sometime in June. After that, for some reason, it would no longer read CDs. I've tested this myself: Any DVD I've loaded works fine both playing it as well as exploring it. However, when loading a CD nothing appears to happen. When you finally click on the E-drive it opens but is blank. I have tried 5-10 different CDs, cleaned the CDs, bought & used a CD-drive disk - all to no avail. This behaviour is the case for bought CDs that my father was previously using without a problem.
Seems to not be a hardware problem but more a software setting (OS, drivers, applications...) Can anyone give me a clue as to what to check as I have run out of ideas!

Answer:dvd rom playing up and wont read dvds or games?

It is possible you are looking for a software answer to a hardware problem.Do you have any bootable DVDs ?If so attempt to boot up to it. That will tell you definitively whether you have a hardware or software problem. If it will not read a bootable DVD before windows loads then the hardware is faulty and should be replaced.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

Answer:Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A - Wont read DVDs

It is likely that your DVD drive is worn out , or out of alignment. Better to just replace the drive for $24 that try to fix it. The CD read/write and DVD read/write are separate functions for different setups of the drive. It is not unusual for one function to work while the other has gone bad.

Hello all!

I have a HP dvd1170 w/lightscribe internal drive and here's my problem. the drive will read both cd's and dvd's written on other computers and will read and allow me to burn cd's but if i put a blank dvd in the drive the drive spins and spins and spins but that's it. it wont recognize the blank dvd. it wont allow me to write to the dvd and it seems that the entire drive locks up. it wont eject unless i reboot. at first I thought it may have been the brand i was using but i have since tried 5 or 6 different brands and they all do the same thing. any suggestions?

Answer:hp dvd1170 wont read blank dvds

It sounds like the DVD burning laser is gone. On drives that can burn both CDs and DVDs, one laser can stop working and the other will continue working fine.

If you have a friend with an external DVD burner, you can attach that and see if you can burn a DVD. If you can, then it is your burner; if you can't then it is a software/windows problem.

Any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite A100-033 - ODD doesn't read all CDs but read DVDs

Hi

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Answer:ODD on my Satellite C70D-A-11E wont read DVDs anymore

Hi

If optical disc drive is installed properly maybe is reading lens dirty. Try to clean it up.

Other way, if your ODD can read CDs but not DVDs it can also be hardware malfunction. The reading lens cannot be calibrated properly and cannot find the right position to read DVD media.

In such case ODD must be exchanged.

Try to clean lens up and check if the problem persists. If yes contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

Answer:DVD RW drive will not read DVDs (But will read CDs)

Yes. there are two lasers, and it sounds as though one has failed.

After burning a DVD today on my Micro Solutions DVD-/+RW I could suddenly no longer read DVDs on that Drive. I have no idea what happen. At first I thought the drive was gone, but I put a CD in it and it reads it just fine.

I uninstalled the driver and the associated programs (i.e. powerDVD etc) and then reinstalled them and then re-did the UDB connection to the computer - it auto-detected it, and then said new device ready to use (using XP by the way). Still didn't work for DVDs, just CDs. I also updated the driver - still nothing.

Under my computer it is listed as a DVD-/+RW, so I cannot understand why it won't play DVDs, just CDs. It's as if the ability to play/burn DVDs has suddenly be locked out.

Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you.

Answer:DVD-RW suddenly cannot read DVDs, can read CDs

Update:

The device manager says it's working properly.

The problems occured after attempting to erase a DVD+RW using Deepburner. Basically I burnt a DVD and then tried out Deepburner to see if it would erase the DVD+RW. When I attempted to eject the DVD it wouldn't eject- the green light just kept flashing a couple times. Eventually I had to turn my PC off and unhook the USB connection and power connection and then do everything back up and restart the computer. Finally the DVD would eject, but since then will not read any DVDs, just CD's and CD-ROM.

The model is an external (USB) Micro-Solutions 2244010 (but really a NEC_DVD-RW, ND-1300A).

I updated the firmware to 1.0A about 6 months ago. I never had a single problem with this drive before or after updating the Firmware.

I really have no idea how or why this could have happened. I can play the DVDs in my other DVD drive just fine.

Please help.

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this
thanks

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

Re: DVD-ROM sudden cant read DVDs, but itcan write on empty DVD and can read/write CD

I don't burn much of anything, but when I have needed to, I have found it difficult. Got XP SP3 too, and what I have done is try to find software that will pick up the drives correctly. For example, I have one drive currently that reads in Windows as a DVD ROM, but it's a CD/DVD +/- burner. I had success with CDBurnerXP for a little while, then it wouldn't work, so I switched to Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012, which I got free on a giveaway. I know it works, because I just burned a couple of rescue disks recently. I have heard that the same software version 6 works real well and is free, but I haven't tried it, so I can't say.

Maybe if you try a few burner programs, you'll run across one that will work...

Just to add...I've had to be persistent to be able to burn. Most of the time, when it has worked, it took numerous efforts to get it do so. This could mean trying one program, then another, and so on...

Answer:DVD-Rom will not read Cd or DVDs

If the drive still shows in My Computer then it may have failed, you could try deleting it and letting Windows reinstall it when it restarts and you could also try cleaning it. You can buy a cleaning disk from Woolys, Tescos just about anywhere for less than a fiver. If neither of these ideas work then you probably need a new drive.

Question: Can't read DVDs

I have a Samsung SD-616Q DVD-Rom drive. It no longer recognises DVDs, whether DVD-Video or DVD-Rom. It works perfectly with all types of CD.I don't think there is a problem with the driver. Hello.

I was given this computer as a gift. It was brought about two months ago and was just given to me the other day. It's brand new and everything but I went to load a cd the other day and it would not read it, same thing with the dvd I tried. What can I do to fix this problem? Besides going out and buying another dvd/cd drive. The store would not let us return it and the company, Acer wants me to send it back but this is the only computer I have and I need it for school and my job that I currently have. When I looked up the drive in the device manager it gave this as the name WDC WD3200BEVT.

Please tap your wisdom and give me some expert advice.

Answer:My DVD-RW can't read DVDs, only CDs... How come?

Sounds like your DVD laser has gone out or is misaligned. Your drive has 2 lasers on it one for reading CD's and one for DVD's thats why one reads just fine and the other doesn't work at all.

You probably need a new one if your drive is not even reading store bought DVD movies/media.

How to read UDF DVDs?

I got some important program in my DVD and i need to install something onto my laptop.
This DVD shows up as totally empty on my computer

I went to google up and found that this is due to DVD burnt in UDF format. However hard i tried, i cant get my computer to reat UDF format.

I tried the same disk on my friend's computer, it has no problem.
I googled around for some UDF drivers but all do not work at all.
I tried isobuster and CDRoller, but both take insanely long and need to pay $$. and dont work....
my dvd-rw drive can read all other CD/DVDs, except this one
I even took a USB DVD burner and plug it into my laptop to try reading, still cannot read so probably its this laptop's problem

So without using my friend's computer, how do i make it such that my computer can read UDF formats?

some more info:

on my fren's computer, it says "CDFS" format
and there are super long file names which have CRC problems when I try to copy from CD to computer
only for the super long file names files. The other files have no problem

if i recall correctly, it was burnt with NERO UDF format due to long file names

Had a problem that cropped up recently on the wife's laptop:
The DVD burner quit reading any sort of disc (blank, used, CD, DVD) very shortly after I did a malware removal. All it does is "hunt" for a disc whenever one is inserted. The "Recording" tab is also now missing.
I have tried all of the general fixes that I could find - registry fixes like the Upper and Lower Filter deletion, the "Drive Type" registry fix, removing the drive in Device Manager and letting Windows re-detect, and even phisically removing the drive and re-seating it. None had any effect. The one thing that I haven't tried yet is to see if the laptop will boot from a bootable disc. I have a Knoppix live CD that I can try - when I find it - that should be able to tell me if Windows is the culprit or not.
Now, I understand that it's entirely possible that the drive has packed up and quit, but it seems too coincidental that it did so right after that malware removal.

Is there any more obscure fixes (registry or otherwise) that I can try before I give up and attemt to find a replacement drive?

Specs:
HP Pavillion dv8301nr w/ Windows XP Media Center Edition (SP3)

Edit to add: The drive is detected fine, and there's no yellow exclamation point in the Dev. Manager, before or after a re-detect. The drive appears in all respects to work fine - it just doesn't read the discs.

Hello
A while ago I discovered that my DVDROM wasn't reading discs. It kept saying 'insert disc and try again'. Even after a cleaning CD it still wouldn't read.
I bought another DVDROM and installed. The problem still persists.
I checked to make sure all wiring was correct.

I have two ROMS;

LiteOn ATAPI DVD C DH52C2P
SONY CD-RW CRX320E

The Sony drives works well. The LiteOn does not.

The IT guys at work say this sounds like a 'software' problem.
What does this mean and what steps do I need to take to figure this out?
Could this be a driver issue?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Have you tried more than one DVD?

Make sure the DVD is clean.

Can you access it via a drive letter (D:, E:, etc) and view the contents?

Perhaps you don't have DVD software installed?

Details about the system please.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well?

I have just been given a laptop for my son and I needed to wipe it. So I uploaded my Vista on to it which seemed to go ok. Now I switch the wireless internet switch and on the Connection icon on the bottom right I open it and it will not let me search any wireless connections as it says I have not got a wireless network adapter installed?

So I went onto the Toshiba website and downloaded the correct drivers. Well I think there the correct drivers. As I cannot get on to the internet I have done this via another laptop in the house which is using wireless internet. I then put the driver onto a DVD disc and tried to put it in the Toshiba laptop and it will not read the disc at all?
So I tried putting a normal DVD in there one of the kids and still will not read it. It sounds like it wants to read it then it just stops?

The model of the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro L40

If anyone could help me I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Satellite Pro L40 wont read DVDs

WLAN card must be installed properly. The status can be checked in device manager.
To enable WLAN card properly you must enable WLAN switch and use FN+F8 key combination (VAP must be installed). Using this key combination you can enable/disable WLAN card.

What to say about DVDs? On this way it is not easy to say much about it. I presume you have installed Vista using installations disc and obviously SP L40 could read this disc properly.
Try to install WLAN driver using USB stick and when Vista is installed properly test optical disc drive using different CD/DVD medias.

Try using it from a linux live cd, and mounting a few dvd's from there.

Just recently I have noticed that my computer will not read any CD or DVD that I put in it. When I look up the properties of the CD drive file it says TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633C ATA Device is corrupt. The computer I have is a Windows 7 64-bit. I haven't really tried any thing yet and I'm not too smart with computers but if someone could help me out or give me some advice it would be much appreciated. Thank You.

Answer:My computer won't read any CDs or DVDs.

1) Make sure the cd drive is the first device in the bios boot order
2) Insert a BOOTABLE disc in the drive
3) Reboot

Does the system offer the opportunity to boot to the cd or dvd you inserted? If not, the drive itself is probably bad.

DVDs I?ve burnt either read as ?blank? when reinserted, or can?t complete the initial formatting.
I used to be able to burn & read both DVD formats. In fact, I have a few DVDs I burnt previously that Windows can read just fine.

With DVD +R:
Windows will go through all the steps of formatting the DVD, burning files to it, and closing the DVD with no problems? But when I reinsert the DVD, it comes up as blank, with absolutely nothing on it.

With DVD +RW:
Windows will start the DVD formatting process, then say it?s ?unable to complete? it.

My DVD burner is listed as PLDS DVD+-RW DH-16A6S ATA Device according to Windows Device Manager, so it should be capable of burning/reading either DVD+ or DVD-, R or RW..

I checked for driver updates, but mine is current:
DEVICE MANAGER > (right-click device) > CHECK FOR UPDATES.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista Home premium, & I was using Sony DVD +R DVDs & Memorex +RWs.

In searching online for solutions, I found a few posts from people complaining of the same problem? who say the problem began after a recent Vista update. Is this true? If so, what?s the fix?

What?s the fix, even if a Vista update didn?t cause the problem?

Answer:DVDs won't read/burn

I would try the following
Uninstall and reinstall the driver
Try known good DVDs
Microsoft Fix it Solution Center: troubleshooting software issues
Use system restore from 3 days before the problem
You may want to try this, at least for a test
DVD Flick
Try from another user account.

My CD drive on my computer was recently not working. It would open and close just fine, but when a CD/DVD gets put into the CD Drive, it will not read the CD. All of my CDs that I put into the drive show up as "DVD-RAM Drive (D:)", and when I double click it with the CD inside, it brings me to a blank page, just like clicking into a blank folder. I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 3. I've been looking everywhere for help, and this is the only place I could count on for help. Thanks!

Answer:My CD Drive will not read any CDs/DVDs

Look in the Device Manager to see if there are any errors under CD/DVD-ROM.

Some times drivers become corrupted, try reinstalling the driver.

If you click on the + in the box it will expand the tree to display your optical drive/s. Double click on the drive in question and then click on Properties. Click on the Driver tab at the top of the page and then uninstall the driver. When you restart your computer the Installation Wizard will recognize new hardware has been installed and look for the appropriate driver for the drive.

There are several audio and video codecs.

If there is a decoder, I don?t know where it is. Should Dell have provided this

is the problem caused by hardware or software?

Answer:My DVD burner cant read DVDs

Its probably hardware. The laser carriage moves up and down a pair of rails, when it gets worn "slop" occurs and the laser cant align properly. Laser positioning needs to be far more precise for dvd reading than for cd reading so the first thing that happens is the loss of ability to read dvd's.

That's probably whats happened to yours.

The title is pretty self-explanatory. My computer had needed a DVD drive very desperately and I got lucky and didn't have to buy one. Someone had given me their computer which had had the mobo go out but everything else was intact. So I install the drive, and think, "Great! Now I can play DVD games and watch movies on my computer!" However, I never had tested that until now. I tried putting in a game, but the drive didn't even read a disc.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4083b. I have tried updating the firmware, but it says I have the latest. Also, my region for my DVDs is set to Region 1 (which I know is the correct region) and I haven't ever changed the region, so the drive has not locked up on me.

What could be the problem?

Ok, the problem is that ever since I had updated from Vista to 7 my DVDs have been unable to PLAY, but were able to read. It recognises the disc pretty well but I go to click on the E: drive and it shows the folders contained, all the .VOB files, .IFO files, .BUP files. It's kind of recognises it like a USB or external drive. I go to WMP and it says 'No Disc in Drive E:'.

I've attempted to update my driver, I've looked for other solutions but there doesn't seem to be a way.

Answer:DVD Drive will not read any dvds

I'm just giving some amateur advice here but, Recently I had that happen to me with a Benq drive. So sad too because that Benq drive was like, the king of drives. I'll never have a better one again....but i digress

Anyway, it began to stop reading dvds/cd-roms/cds etc. Off an on. Sometimes it would read, other times it wouldn't, and when it DID read, it would usually fail during the middle of an install saying it couldnt read the disc even if it was perfectly fine etc. I don't have a solution for you other than telling you that it's possible your drive could be toast, or hanging on by a thread, much like mine was. I had to get rid of it and buy a new one because nothing worked.

Don't take my word entirely though. Perhaps some fine people on here might have better solutions for you. But I just thought I would throw in my 2 cents since I had the same exact thing happen to me.

Answer:LG dvd burner won't read dvds

Sounds as if it is defective. Since it must be new, get it replaced under warranty. There are separate lasers in the LG for reading CD data and reading DVD data. The DVD laser is probably out of alignment, which sometimes happens during shipping.

Basically my problem is this: my HP computer has a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM (it's all one drive)which operates in Windows XP and can perfectly well read CD's and copy files on/off of them. The DVD-ROM does not work. It can read the Sims DVD but it can't read movies. The computer sees the disc and it even knows what the movie is but it just won't play it. I tried to download VLC to see if it was any different than InterActual but the movie still wouldn't work. I also tried to change the screen resolution but it still didn't work.

Also, when I place any sort of disc into the CD/DVD drive, it utters a very frightening slicing noise that sounds like the CD is being cut up.

I'm wondering if this problem comes from the fact that my computer is completely full - I have 1 gig of memory left.

Please help me!

Hey,
Recently my DVD burner does not see any DVDs on my computer that I built a couple of months ago. It does not see Movies, Games(that are DVD), Blank DVD-R or DVD-R that I have written information to. I have put in a few different CDs(Game, Audio and Data) and they do get recognized by the drive. My problems all started when I was writing to a Blank DVD. While it was burning, the burn process failed about midway through. After that happened, my problems with the drive not recognizing the DVDs started.

I had done a system restore to an earlier restore point before I had the problems with the drive, but that did not help. So, I undid the system restore. I have also tried uninstalling the drive from the Device Manager and restarted, but that also did not work.

The computer is running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The model of the DVD burner is a LiteOn iHAS524-T98 B. The Manufacture Date of the drive is April 2011, so it's not that old of a drive.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thank You,
Paul

Hello,

The CD-RW/DVD combo drive on my Satellite Pro A40 (14 months old) stopped to read DVD (DVD-R or video, haven't tried other types), though it can read DVDs some time ago. I have cleaned the drive using a cleaning disk. I think the problem started when I upgrated the OS from WinXP SP1 to SP2, but not sure. I tried writing CD-R and CD-RW, and no error was reported, but the resulting CDs are unusable (cannot be read in the drive, with the LED flashes a couple of times and then on forever).

Anyone has an idea of how to solve this ptoblem? Thanks

I would suggest that you access Device Manager on your notebook and then remove your DVD-ROM devive from the list. When you have done this then select the 'Scan for New Hardware' option and allow Windows XP to re-install the device and associate the correct driver.

So my problem is this: My DVD drive simply refuses to read DVDs. CDs work fine and for some reason the DVD with W7 is also read by W7 itself. Any other DVD (both single and dual-layer) are unreadable. Windows simply ejects the tray when I try to open a disc and asks to put in a disc. I tried both retail DVDs and DVDs which I burnt myself, none of them work (except for the W7 install disc).

I also tried reinstalling the driver (twice) and upgrading the firmware from 1.1 to 1.3. I have an Optiarc AD-7173A. I doubt it's the lens seeing as how it's still able to read the Windows disc and it didn't have any problems in XP (can't try that now as W7 is the only OS on my main computer).

So does anyone have any ideas? I'm also thinking about hooking up another drive to my PC to see if that one works and my current drive to another PC but before that I'm wondering whether anyone of you can help me.

Hi, for the past while now I've been wanting to wipe my computer, and I was finally ready a few days ago when I realized my cd drive can't read cds. The odd thing is that it can read dvds fine. Another odd thing is that when there's a cd in my computer on restart, it takes an incredibly long time for my computer to boot up and I hear a lot of clicking from the cd drive. Not being very handy I really don't want to have to replace my cd drive. Does anyone know what's wrong or if there's a way to fix it without replacing the drive?

My DVD/COM-Rom drive will only read DVDs and not CDs. Can someone please tell me if I need a new drive or whether this is a software issue?

If I need a new drive, can I use a generic one and what would the part number be?

Thanks.

Answer:Equium L20-198 - Can only read DVDs but no CDs

Hi mate,

Have you tried different CDs? Maybe some CDs are scratched and can?t be read properly anymore.

Furthermore I had a similar problem and the reason was that was dust over the lens. I used a microfiber cloth to clean it and after this it was possible to read my disk again! :)

I don't know whether the W7 forums are the right place for this question, but I hope someone can redirect me.

I have about 150 DVDs which back up my photographs. They were burned between 2003 and early 2009 in Win XP Pro x86, using Nero v.5. They were burned as data discs, not photo discs. The files are almost all in TIF, PSD or Camera Raw format.

I can read them (i.e. open them in Photoshop) in my XP computer. I can read them in Windows 7 x86 in a VMWare virtual machine. But I can't read them in W7 x64.

The drive is a Pioneer DVR-216DBK, and I've installed the latest firmware. It isn't malfunctioning: I can install programs from DVDs/CDs, and I can write DVDs/CDs.

Searching online I found a program named Iso Burner, from which I can slowly and laboriously 'run' individual files (i.e. open them in PS), but I need to be able to see the contents in Bridge.

Can I do this if I:
a) buy a DVD drive that supports older formats, or
b) move the DVD drive that wrote the discs to my W7 machine, or
c) download drivers from....?, or
d) buy the latest version of Nero (which I hoped to avoid; I hardly use DVDs for backup any more)

Thanks

Mary

Answer:can't read DVDs made in XP x86 in W7 x64

move the drive! I have had this same sort of problem with my pioneer dvr 110D. Burning on a dvd, then putting it in my liteon. Would show as a used-up blank cd, a coaster basically, when i knew it wasnt. Therefore i dont burn much with the pioneer sadly. Tho since i have the liteon, i havent been to pioneer to see about a firmware fix.

That would be my first suggestion is the firmware. Make sure other optical drives are disconnected before attempting to upgrade the pioneer firmware. If that doesnt work, then yea, i would switch out the drives. I would bet $20 on that pony.

Hi! i am having a dvd writer (sony dvd rw aw-g170a (DRU-170C)), recently it has stop reading data dvds(created with nero 7), when a data dvd inserted in the drive it tries to read it and after some time the icon in my computer turns to cd drive from dvd ram drive. on clicking the icon OS states "either the corrupted disc or window can't read the format". though the same data dvd autoplays (means opens itself showing the contained data) in other computer, while the autoplay option shows 'Blank cd'.
it also can't autoplay any video dvd on inserting it. but the dvd can be played with power dvd pressing its play button, earlier the dvd can be autoplayed with power dvd on just inserting it.
i have checked the drive with sony drive diagnotic software. it state the drive has no problem, i have replaced the ata cable, already replaced dvd writer 3 time but it still shows same problem.
kindly suggest..........

Hi all

I have just purchased a F20-136 and am getting "Event ID 11, Category : CDROM" errors in the event viewer. This relates to a controller error. The drive appears to read most discs but occasionally it has trouble reading some discs and this is when the error occurs (this can happen with either CD's or DVD's, pressed or burned).
I have also burnt an image to DVD-R which reads OK on the laptop but not on my desktop DVD. This laptop has the Mat****a UJ-840S SuperMulti Drive.

Does this sound like a hardware problem ?

Answer:F20-136: Sometimes drive can't read some CDs or DVDs

Hello Gary

It is not easy to say if there is some hardware problem. Your unit is a new one and, if there is any possibility, tries to contact service partner in your country. Explain them the problem and let them check the drive properly. If there is some malfunction the warranty will cover the replacement costs.

I have isolated my computers problem with some games. My computer can read CDs, but not DVDs. When I insert RTW (which is a CD), I can view the files and everything. When I insert a Family Guy DVD, it doesn't work. When I insert Far cry (which it says is a DVD disk), it can't read it. None of these things are pirated or illegal. I just got a new CD driver (the thing that loads and ejects the CDs), so I don't think that would be the problem.
