Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

Question: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

Preferred Solution: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A chemical smell to me tells me it's likely a failing/burnt out capacitor...It would be best to have it checked out at a shop...

My E-system laptop automatically turn off in five seconds after turn on without displaying?

Answer:my E-system laptop turn off in five seconds after turn on

Possibly overheating because fan on CPU has failed. You will need to open the back of laptop and see if fan is spinning.

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

I've had this computer for a little over a year and never had any problems with it. It was working fine this morning and I shut the lid to go do stuff but when i returned and tried to turn on the laptop it started beeping about every five seconds. The screen is black and I am unable to turn it on or off. It just stays at a black screen beeping every five seconds. I've tried holding the power button to turn it off but it wont do anything. It just keeps beeping every five seconds. Help!!  There were no error messages before I turned off my laptop and nothing like this has ever happen.

Hey guys, I really need some help here! My laptop is not turning on. The power light turns on for a few seconds but then it turns off again. The fan doesn't turn on either. I know it's not the battery because I switched the battery out with my brother;s and it's still not working. I also tried to just put it on the charger and it doesn't work then either! Of course my laptop is no longer in warranty so please help me out!!

Answer:Laptop won't turn on but the power light stays on for a few seconds

Hi E. Trader,
Welcome to the Community.
Remove any peripheral devices that are connected to the computer.
Please unplug the battery and the adaptor, press and hold power button for 10 seconds and then plugin the adaptor and turn on the computer. If you get light on the power button, we would be able to run a test on the computer to isolate the issue. Instructions on how to run the test are mentioned on the link below:
http://dell.to/i5zbDR
During the test you would get a screen with solid colors and that time please press “Y”. The test result should be an error code or beeps (if nothings come up on the screen).
If there is no light on the laptop, system board needs replacement.
Thanks & RegardsManshu S#iworkfordell

How do I turn off the beep noise that come from the inside of my laptop? (NOT the beep that come out of the speaker or headphone!)

It's getting on my nerve. I'm unable to disable it.

I tried disable it from
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Beep

and setting the value of Start from 1 to 4, but the laptop still beep! (The beep doesn't come out of the speaker or headphone. It seems like it comes out of the laptop. Even if I plug my headphone/earphone, the beep come out of the laptop, not the headphone/earphone)

I just want to disable the beep. (I'm not talking about the "default beep" in Control Panel -> Sound.)

On the other side, my computer is working fine. It's just the random beep that annoye me.

(I'm using Windows 8.1, and there is no "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" in device manager)

Answer:How do I turn off the beep noise from the inside of my laptop?

When does this beep occur?

How often?

Are you doing any specific task when this beep occurs?

There is no such default, random beep built into a Windows 8.1 system (or any other Windows OS for that matter), so I honestly have no idea what it is at this time.

How old is the system?

If it's not coming from the speakers, where do you think it is coming from?

Can you record it & zip up/upload an MP3 file?

Regards. . .

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Answer:Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

Hey, I'm not 100% sure of my laptops name and operating system, I believe it's an X360, but regardless it's a 2 in 1 laptop with a non removable battery. My computer made a little noise and then won't turn on (display is off) and I can't figure out why. When I charge it, sometimes there will be no light on, sometimes there will be an orange light, and sometimes there will be a white light on. When my computer worked fine there would be a flashing white light on, but now there isn't, letting me know there's a problem. So what do I do? From research I've seen do a hard reset, but it always mentions that I have to pull out a battery and my battery is non removable. So what would I do? Is there a way to do this where I don't have to remove a battery?

nishant,

I just want to clarify your statement, did it come with Windows 10 installed out of box, or did you upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10? If it came preinstalled can you provide me the full model number?

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

I have a Dell E5440 laptop that recently had it's LCD panel replaced. I usually dock it and connect it to an Optoma Projector and before I had the LCD panel replaced, I only showed 2 displays when I went to screen resolution. Now, after the LCD panel has been replaced, I see 3 displays in Screen Resolution, one of them being the laptop display.

Has anyone seen this behavior before and if so, do you know how to correct it? And before you go telling me to check my power setting in the Control Panel, my power settings are the same as they were before I had my LCD panel replaced. Also, I have upgraded the BIOS and completely wiped the hard drive and re-installed Windows.

At this point in time, I'm willing to entertain any and all suggestions.

Thanks,

Rusty

I have tried everything from esc then power button, alt f8 with power button, cntrl alt del, wrapped it in towel to heat ,nothing happening ,toshiba l655 d ,just a headache stuff its been working for two years now thats the first encounter and wont do anything at all...no faint display ,nothing nothing nothing...heeelp

Answer:Toshiba laptop l655d wint turn on display

There could be a number of things wrong with this laptop.Firstly try to plug in an external monitor using a VGA cable- If this works and you get a display on the screen then this eliminates the graphics chips and points to a faulty screen. This can be easily replaced and the panels are fairly cheap. If you do not get a display on the monitor then it could be a fault with the graphics chip.- This isn't an easy fix and will require the removal of the mother board to either reheat the chip using a heatgun or reballing the bga back to the board. Probably worth sending to a professional unless you wish to try it yourself - we can guide you. On some laptops (hp mainly) I have noticed that if the ram if faulty then you will get no display on with the internal or external display. But the fault can be identified by the flashing caps lock and scroll lock keys. When you turn the laptop on do you see any of the lights on the keys flash? (assuming there are lights on your caps and scroll lock keys)Or do you hear any beeps on startup? if so then tell us how they sound, usually described as long and short beeps. So for example if you hear 4 beeps we need to know how they sound eg long beep, long beep, short beep, short beep. We can use this to identify the error.

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

Hallo everybody.

I'm trying to repair this Satellite A60-712; it came to me without power supplier, but I've found a compatible one and it seems to work: CC IN LED lights up and battery starts to charge.

My problem is that this notebook starts for a while, heatsink begins to rotate, all LEDs light up normally but, suddenly everything turns off after 2-3 seconds. I've observed that this machine has only a free RAM slot and have been noticed that it has an integrated on motherboard memory module; could be this the problem? Or is possible some other reason?

Could someone help me?
Thanks.

Answer:Satellite A60-712 - Turn off after 2-3 seconds

Hi

> it came to me without power supplier, but I've found a compatible one
Can you please test it with an original Toshiba AC/DC adaptor? Does happen the same?

If the notebook has already integrated memory on mainboard there is no problem there. You can also use the notebook without additional RAM module.

In worst case you need professional help from an authorized service provider. :(

SL510 was running and went to sleep. Upon wake, desktop appeared as it was left before sleeping, then machine turned off (hard off).  When power button is depressed, power light/fans/optical light turn on as normal but then shuts off within 3 seconds.  Twice when attempting to turn on machine, it displayed splash screen and began to load windows then shut off suddenly and went back to ~3 second on before off again.  Took battery/AC power out and held down power button to drain, no change.  Also no change with just AC power/no battery.   Have not pulled CMOS battery to reset BIOS, will try that next.  Any suggestions or keys to depress during power-on for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated...

I figured it out.  After trying everything (complete power drain, RAM out, one DIMM in either slot, HD out, with or without battery, etc.), I unplugged the fan and turned it on and it worked, displaying a "FAN ERROR" message.  I plugged the fan back in and it's working solid.  Power cycled it many times, sleep mode many times, fan is working as it should too.  Hope this can help someone else  :0)

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

When I plug in my computer and flip the power switch on the back my pc try's to turn on the fan's run and it sounds like it's trying to power up and then shut's off 3-5 seconds later. And when I try to turn it on from the power button in the front it doesn't do anything. I've sent it back to the place I ordered it from(CyberPowerPc) 3 times and they send me it back with the same problem happening they have replaced the motherboard and 2 stick's of ram and it say's on the invoice they tested it before they shipped it to me so is something happening in shipping or am I being screwed.

Answer:My Computer shuts off a few seconds after i turn it on

Hi Millurn welcome to the site.

seem odd that they Would BOTH not work. Might be the CPU might be at fault here. I am surprised that it does not work as everything is compatible.

It also sounds like it might be the PSU. Can you get hold of another 400W plus PSU and see if that works. If so then you know what the Issue is.

hope this helps

My relatively new Yoga 3 Pro (4 months old) inbuild screen goes blacl/turns off after 30 seconds unless I am activity typing or moving the mouse around.  The screen still seems to be on and I can see the back-light but the screen is completely black.  I have to hit a key or click the trackpad for it to come back on.  This happens no mattter what program/app I am using or even if I am just displaying the desktop.  It will even happen when viewing youtube videos or reading a pdf.   While I have not tried it, I am pretty sure it it will do this when doing a presentation unless I move through the slides within 30 seconds.  I have adjuster the timer for the screen to turn off in Power & System settings (tried everything from 2 min to never for both battery and plugged-in) and have disabled Harmony Paper Display (using the Fn+Esc)  with no effect.   The screen just goes black after 30 seconds no matter what I do.  Does anyone know how to stop this from happening. This is really annoying and pretty much makes the computer useless for work.

Answer:Yoga 3 Pro screen turn off after 30 seconds

Did you ever find a solution to this?  I have the same thing happening and nothing I do in the power settings make any difference.  It happens to laptop display or if I am plugged into an external monitor.

For these last couple of months i've had issues with BSODs. I blamed it on the RAMs and returned them to the store. While i was waiting for them to return, i borrowed my brother's RAMs, and it turned out i still got the BSODs. Anyway, i fixed the problem a few days ago when i updated most of my drivers.

Today i got my RAMs back. I switched them out with my brother's RAMs and booted the computer. it looked fine the first 2-5 seconds but then it turns off and boots again by itself a few seconds later.

I've had a similar issue before, and it turned out it was my heatsink which wasnt proberbly mounted. I checked it, and it might have been loose but i managed to fix it and now it should be mounted correctly. Still, the computer reboots after a couple of seconds.

Ive checked all the cables to see it any of them were loose
Ive tried to plug the videocard into another plug
Ive taken the CPU out and back in
Ive tried to switch out the RAMs one by one

Do you have any suggestions ???
Thanks in advance.

Hello... let me state the problem.

Problem: Computer shuts down randomly. I press the power switch, but it does not turn the computer on. I have to wait a while and press power switch, and it turns on, or I switch the voltage switch (red switch) on the back of the PSU a few times, press power, switch voltage switch back to 110V and then power switch and it turns on normally. (Probably not good for it) It then runs for like 1 hour --> 1 day and turns off randomly again, where i must repeat.

Reason?: I use to never leave my computer on for longer than a day. I never downloaded anything large for it to be left on overnight. During chirstmas I got a Dual Layer DVD-Burner and installed that. I have been leaving my computer on for weeks at a time downloading large files now. Everything was fine for about 3 weeks. Near the end of Janurary it first happened. I didn't think much about it, just turned it back on and it worked fine. About 2 weeks after that it occured again: Now it happens pretty much every day with the added bonus of the power switch not responding for about 1 --> 5 mins.

Possible Problem: The thing I find most insteresting is the fact that after it shut's down, it will not start up for about 1 mins (power switch doesn't respond for a little bit). I can not tell if it is because:
1) I started leaving my computer on for weeks at a time and now Mobo is burning out or PSU?
2) Because I installed the Dual Layer DVD-Burner, and ... Read more

Answer:Computer doesn't turn on for a few seconds? PSU Problem?

Sounds like it could be the PSU. I had similar problems in getting the bugger to start up and swapping out the PSU seemed to fix it. I've also had problems with the powerup button getting stuck and causing similar symptoms, but with it shutting down my guess would be PSU. Good luck!

Can someone tell me if there is something wrong with my X240. It has always done this so I am not sure if it is normal, but I never had this issue on older X series laptops. When I press the power button, if the machine was either shutdown, or hibernating, it takes 20 seconds before the Lenovo logo shows and it starts doing anything. Then it boots windows in seconds (I have an SSD) and I have no issues. Is this normal? It does not seem normal to me. I already upgraded the BIOS to latest. It doesn't matter which operating system I have installed. The BIOS is also set to quick boot. Enabling or disabling secure boot or UEFI mode does not do anything. Thanks

built my computer over 4 years ago, woke up one day and my computer would only turn on for a couple seconds before shutting down. stripped it down to:

MoBo: Soyo Dragon Plus 2 (ATX, 478 socket)
PSU: 350w w/ X-dreamer case
CPU: 2.6Ghz Intel P4

still had same problem. replaced PSU w/ 400w, same problem, replaced CPU w/ 2.4Ghz P4, same problem. thought it was a bad CPU because when start it up w/o the 4 pin connecter plugged into the motherboard, it runs the fans w/o powering down.

what am i missing?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Just aquired an Inspiron 5759 which is great and does everything I want apart from one thing - it takes an eternity (10 seconds) to show anything on the screen and as it doesn't have a power light I thought it wasn't turning on the first few times I pressed the power button so obviously pressed it more times than I should have!
I have seen the thread about switching the light at the front to show the HDD activity but as you have to press the fn and H key every time you turn it on it doesn't really help.
This is a real issue for me so is there any way to make it boot quicker?

Answer:5759 takes 10 seconds to turn on-is that an issue?

* Are you booting with the AC adapter connected to the 2015 laptop?* Disconnect all external peripherals (USB hard drive, USB keys, printer, etc.) from the laptop to see if the boot time is faster* The front left LED also indicates power and battery status. You can also turn on Caps Lock LED to verify that the system is on

I have built my pc during summer and it has been fine until two days ago. It started with a crackling noise and my pc not turning on correctly. It's not my pc case nor the power output as I have tried multiple sockets and my pc buttons do work as I have tested them multiple times. The only way to turn my pc on is to give it a power jolt by shutting down the power through the power output or button on the PSU itself, sometimes it takes multiple tries. I have tried checking the cables to see if everything is correctly connected and it seems to be so. I wonder if it's the cable or PSU itself that's a problem...

Answer:PC won't turn on - PSU crackling noise

crackling sounds like bad connections, partly broken wires, bad capacitors in PSU.
Cable is easy enough to change as they are standard.

If the battery was severely depleted it can take a good 2-3 hours of the vibrating before it actually starts up. Just leave plugged in using a wall adapter (not computer)

I have 3 Benq XL2720Z monitors for gaming. XL2720Z LED Gaming Monitor | BenQ 16:9 LED Gaming monitors

I would like to know if it's better to turn off all 3 monitors by pressing the power button on all the monitors when not in use for over 12 hours or just let my computer turn the display off which I currently have a way to do to it by pressing a certain key.

Personally I would prefer to just let my computer turn the display off since I only have to press 1 button on my keyboard rather than have to press 3 power buttons on the monitors which don't really work that well.

However my final choice goes down to which is better for the monitors themself. I don't want to end up damaging the monitors.

Anyone know which way is safer? I can't seem to find a clear answer.

I got a UPS 1500 battery backup that has 1 plug that controls 3 others that makes the decision for me when the 1 plug is using no power or the machine is powered off

Prior I just used the button on the monitor seems more reliable than counting on a feature to work before windows even boots.

Since the Z500 is not supported and by the fact that Win 10 might run at one time. The issue might be due to a recent update of Windows. Try restoring to a previous date where you think you do not have any issues at all.

Hello - I have an Inspiron 15R (2 yrs old). Uploaded photos yesterday; today it won't turn on. I get a clicking sound CLICK click click click...when I turn on the power. Tried the power cord with and without the battery in and looked on the DELL site but no answers. The disk door opens and closes and the power will shut down (the noise will stop).  Your insights will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:Inspiron 15R won't turn on - makes clicking noise

Anything other than the replacement of a mainboard or screen is a $159 flat charge but will include installation only - recovery of your files from the old drive would not be included.
Dell Out of Warranty repair:
If the system does still recognize the drive, you can try mounting it in an external case and seeing if you can read any data.  If the system doesn't recognize the drive, professional data recovery will be required.  That starts at about $600 for a basic attempt and can reach into the thousands depending on how much data is there and what damage has been done to the drive.

I basically spent the entire day (yesterday) assembling a new pc and after a few minor problems I got it up and running, After installing windows, all the drivers, and just finishing the last few updates.
Turned the machine off, switched the power off (via the switch in the back of the psu) and hooked up the storage HDs, when I returned power to the machine all the fans immediately started and there was a strange humming noise; like the fan is speeding up and slowing down but with a lower tone.
The machine is now completely unresponsive and after I turned off the power and unplugged it, removed the HDs, SSD and cd drive (which were working normally) and everything from the back (mouse/keyboard/monitor) so I move he machine out and get a better look inside. When I turned the power on the fans turned on but a lot slower and the humming was almost gone.

I really need help figuring out what happened.

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/tole/saved/1FB3 this is my build

Answer:PC won't turn on and makes weird humming noise

Just tried to turn it on again after leaving it overnight and it turned on, with the case power button, but after that it didn't respond when I tried to turn it off so I turned it off with the psu power switch and now its back to the same nonresponsive state with the fans (all of them) twitching as soon as I turn the psu power switch.

The humming from last night is replaced by a low pitched squeaking noise each time the fans twitch.

Good Afternoon,

I'd appreciate any help that I could receive for this issue. I'd like to preface this post by mentioning that I have searched these and other forums about this issue and have found people that have had similar problems, but I don't think they are explaining things properly/as clearly as they could be. I'm hoping that I could give a little more incite into what's happening.

My laptop has Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The power options are set to "High Performance" which means that the system never goes to "Sleep" whether it is plugged in or not. However, the display is set to "Turn Off" at 5 minutes on battery or 10 minutes while plugged in.

Here is the issue: After my system's display has "Turned Off" due to inactivity, I will hit a key or move my mouse to bring the display back. Sometimes (not all the time), the laptop display will remain inactive. However, I do have two external displays hooked up. When this problem occurs, I can see my cursor on the two external displays.

Now, in most posts, people say they fix the problem by restarting their computer. I've found a different fix that doesn't require a restart. I'm able to log into the system while the screen is still off (ctrl+alt+del, type in password, press enter). Once logged in, I can see my desktop on the two external screens, but not on my laptop's native display. I then hit ctrl+alt+del, and my laptop's native display returns from it's off state. I pr... Read more

Answer:Laptop Display Remains Off When Returning From "Turn Off" State

I've continued to see this issue. And my assumption was wrong - it doesn't rely on locking my computer. I have come back to my system after the display has turned off, shook the mouse, and the two external monitors come back, but the laptop display does not. The only thing I can think of doing at this point is to turn off the option where the monitors "turn off" after so long, even though that seems like such a waste. Maybe I'll see something funky when I do that though. If anyone has any thoughts, they would be very appreciated.

I have a Dell desk top, windows Vista, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB external hard drive.I was working on the computer, no internet up. Only a Word Document up. I wanted to play a game I had installed on the computer over a year ago, Chuzzles.  I opened a folder I made for extra not often used games. I double clicked on the Chuzzles icon, but missed the icon. So I double clicked actually on it. It didn't open. I double clicked twice meaning 4 times, by accident again. The Chuzzles screen came up, it was the not full screen one, so I clicked the full screen option. The monitor then turned a blue and white fuzzy mess with 3 letters across the screen, one letter was "e" and the date 2010 came on the screen with it. Then my tower started making a loud whirring like an engine and there were 3 beeps that occurred over and over every 2 seconds. At my brother's instruction I tried to turn it off at the tower with the powen button, didn't go off. I unplugged the tower at the wall. Then I tried plugging it in again, then pressed the on button. The computer went right back into making the whirring noise and the 3 beeps over and over and nothing came up on my monitor, black screen. I was really concerned at this point. Hello, I have a problem with my T410 (model: 25223FG)with Nvidia NVS 3100M  (driver version 8.17.12.5738  (27.06.2010) ) .The Fn+F3 Key-Command is configured to turn of the display. In almost 50% of the cases where I use the Key-Command (fn+F3), the display turns off but does not turn on again on mouse movement or key-press or touch-pad action. The faulty behaviour occures always when the T410 is connected to the AC adapter. And the chance of the display not turning on again seems to become higher with increase of the duration between Key-Command and mouse movement. In these test cases my energy manager configuration was set to not turn of anything, when connected to AC. If I configure it to turn of the display after some time I am experiencing the same problem. So my question is:Does anyone have a suggestion where to start? (display driver, bios,...) RegardsJonny

Hey everybody, A couple days ago, my Lenovo IdeaPad Y400 started randomly losing power and turning off (just turning off; not going through the shutdown process).  I thought this was weird/annoying but I could always just push the power button and boot it back up again.  I planned on doing a system restore today from a backup I have on an external drive, but before I could do that, yesterday I put my laptop into sleep mode, and it randomly shut off while sleeping and wouldn't power back up.  I can't get it to turn on from either the main power button or the NOVO system restore button.  What's more, my laptop no longer even recognizes when the power supply is plugged into the machine: the LED on the front panel doesn't light up when the cable is plugged in.  It won't power up when just the battery is plugged in, either. I don't think the problem is a power supply issue.  My mom has a Lenovo laptop as well and I went to her house today to check.  Her power supply fits my laptop but my laptop won't work with hers either. I found a bunch of solutions online like taking the battery out, holding the power button for 60 seconds, then plugging it back in.  Some people said to hold enter and the power button at the same time, some people said to remove the RAM before holding the button, some people said to hold the laptop upside-down or at a 45-degree angle when holding the power button, etc. etc. None of those suggestions w... Answer:Lenovo Y400 won't turn on, makes strange clicking noise

hi pianojordan,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

From your observation, it does look like there's a problem with the CPU since this is where the clicking noise is comming from.
   - Link to picture

if you have the Y400 non-SLI model, the Intel HD Graphics (integrated to the CPU) is normally the one that's being used when the unit is turned ON (if the CPU is defective, this may explain why you're getting the system gives a no display).

In this case, if the machine's no longer under warranty, I would try and reseat the CPU, reapply a thermal paste and check for burnt areas on the motherboard. Otherwise, I would contact lenovo and report the issue as you may need to send the unit for warranty work.

As for purchasing a new motherboard, I wouldn't do this yet unless it's recommended by soneone who have access to low level motherboard repair tools. You may opt to send the unit to lenovo (for out of warranty repair) or to a local computer repair center to verify the parts needed to restore the system back.

Hi I'm new here

Ive had my laptop for about 2 years and it's undergone many problems - broken screens, dust in the fan etc.

yesterday I was using it as normal when it switched off completely without any warning.
I'm used to this happening as my laptop regularly overheats and switches off like this.

However, when I turned it back on it made a high pitched noise that kept on getting higher until the laptop switched off again.
I think the noise was from the fan.

There was also a weird slight smell of burning plastic.
My laptop won't turn on and when I plug it in the orange power light doesn't come up.

PLEASE HELP I HAVE MY WHOLE ITUNES LIBRARY AND SCHOOL WORK ON THERE

Also in the past week the hing on one side of the laptop has broken off.
The screen still worked and any wires were still intact

To be honest, all the details don’t sound very good…
Everything looks like some serious hardware problem causes that the notebook cannot be powered up.
I cannot say for sure what’s wrong here but probably the motherboard or CPU has died.

Anyway, your data on the HDD should not be affected and I guess you could get access to your whole iTunes library. You need to remove the HDD from the notebook’s HDD bay and you will need to use an external USB 2.5” HDD caddy to connect the this notebook’s HDD to another computer as an external USB HDD.

This will allow you to move and to backup the data to another good working HDD.

Hi. My HP 15 touch smart notebook crashed a few weeks ago and I just had the computer for less than 6 months and I still have at least 6 more months of warranty on it. But I had accidentally took the battery pack out while putting the computer on charge and I put it back in and tried to turn my computer on, and so far for the last several weeks I couldn't do my school work bc it won't turn on. There is no noise, the fan won't turn, the screen won't display. The only that works is the charging light (orange when its dead and is charging; white when its half charged and is charging). I have tried all methods to get it to turn back on and none have helped me so far. Is the only thing I can do is send it off to be repaired? Or do I need to just buy replacement parts?

Answer:Complete dead computer - no noise, fan whirring, screen turn...

***Warning: I'm very, very tech unsavvy*** Example: I put a large game disc in the player yesterday, it recognized there was a cd in there, for instance, after much work and time on behalf of the computer, but although it's a game with hundreds of files and hundreds of megabytes on it, it registered one media track 40-something bytes only. Nothing else. That's the kind of thing I get if I'm lucky enough to have it recognize anything there at all, lately. Mostly, it doesn't recognize them at all anymore. As a matter of fact, part of its erratic behavior is that half the time, if there's a cd or dvd in the drive when the computer is turned on, it gets stuck on startup before the user account screen pops up and won't go anywhere unless I open the tray up. It's driving me crazy. Do I have a bad drive or is the drive okay and there's something wrong with some software somewhere? What say you, to the noob?

Answer:[SOLVED] CD/DVD drive, lights turn on, makes noise, tries... but doesn't recognize!

Hello everyone,It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers on.en.community.dell.com/.../This post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.- Peter

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

How do I configure the script for WiFi for autostarting hotspot whenever WiFi is turned on?

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Hey,

This happened 4 or 5 times. Sometimes when I turn on my PC it doesn't show anything on the monitor, I've waited a few minutes but nothing comes up. I must turn it off using the button on the case, because there's no other way, and then on again to fix it. I'm afraid that someday it won't boot at all. What could be causing this? Could it get to the point of not booting at all someday? Anyway way of fixing it? Also, I started like a few months ago to clean my registry and defrag my drives almost every day using cleaning utilities such as WIse Care 365 and Glary Utilities, and sometimes with the Windows one. Could that be what's causing it?

Answer:Sometimes PC won't display anything when I turn it on

Could be bunch of things, anything from bad PSU or capacitors on the motherboard. No software can do that if it won't show BIOS screen or get past it.

I have a Lenovo Ideacentre all-in-one desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with 4 GB of RAM.

I have noticed that whatever I set for when to turn off the display, it always defaults to 15 minutes which is very infuriating. I understand that it the default setting of 15 minutes

is used for laptops to save the battery but it is also being used on my all-in-one.

Does anyone know of a solution to my problem please? (I simply want to be able to set the length of display as I want it to be and not be restricted to 15 minutes at a time).

Andrew

Answer:When to turn off the display

go to Power options

What Plans do you have set it to

Whatever plan its on Change plan setting it to Never or any interval you want on The " Turn off display"

If its runs off the battery you have a separate option for example Battery/AC current power plans and Save changes,

If the Sleep power option is before the Turn off display interval time then The Sleep option will supersede  the Display option

Hi guys, i'm able to get my pc running, all the components are running, however my monitor is not able to detect any signal. I've changed a new vga - analog connector and it didnt solve the issue. Which hardware shld i test next? My graphics card is only abt 1year + while my hard disk has been ard for like 5years +. I'm nt sure which is at fault. Can some1 give me pointers?

Post your computer specs..  make/model (if OEM)3. First thing to do is try another monitor, or plug your current monitor into another computer...   This is to rule out your monitor being the problem..You could also, try connecting the monitor to the onboard video adapter, if there is one. If that works, it would indicate a problem with your video card or the psu..

My monitor has been working alright, but out of nowhere it just went off, and won't turn back on, I tried to plug another cord and nothing happened, so I'm pretty sure it's the monitor. ~I use my computer in a cool room, so I'm guessing it's not caused by overheat.

Are you using an onboard graphics card, or a discrete graphics card? Sometimes there can be a conflict between onboard graphics and a separate graphics.

Whenever I close the lid of my notebook and open it sometimes the display won't show anything and it'll remain black. The backlight is always on whenever this happens and it can sometimes be resolved by opening and closing the lid a couple of times but most of the time i have to reboot the laptop completely and it's starting to bother me. Is there a way to resolve this issue?

Question: Turn off Display?

In my power mode setting window, I set "Sleep" to Never. However, I do not know what to do with "the Display frame. It seems to be somehow involved with Sleep but the examples I see at Geek have them different. If I want Sleep at Never, do I also want display at Never?

Thank you.

Answer:Turn off Display?

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish?

I use a screen saver and have sleep set to never but I have my display turn off after 20 minutes. I figure if I haven't done anything in 20 minutes it's unlikely I will soon so turning off the display is a good thing to do. All I have to do is move the mouse to turn it on again.

Hi guys,
I hope you all might be able to help me with this one. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question but here goes. So the situation is that my computer was working perfectky until I shut it down and disconnected it to move it into another room. After I reconected it, the computer turns on and I can hear the hard drives activating, however there is no display on the monitor. Also with this I can't turn the computer off using the power button or reset it once the computer has been turned on. i have to reach around the back of the computer and turn off the power supply manually. I tried testing to see if my video card was the problem by removing it and using the onboard display however the results were the same. I could really use some help. Thanks.

System specs

AMD 3500+ w/ 1 gig ddr400 ram
ATI radeon 800xl video card
500w power supply

Answer:No display/won't turn off

Typically you need to reconfigured the computer's BIOS to re-enable the onboard video. Since you can't see the display, the normal method for this is to take out the battery for a half hour or so, put it back in again and then restart the computer.

It can also be a bad monitor. Might try either putting yours on another computer or swapping in a known working one.

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. Thank you, PhotoRay

Answer:In XP Pro can't turn off Windows Firewall or Turn on Automatic Updates

How did you remove Norton in the first place?
