I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance
Chaim.

BTW, while trying to write this thread I got all this terms that i didn't know how to call in English, like power supply - is that the box which connects to the power and to all the m-board and drives? is there an English computer terms dictionary?

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

Answer: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

A chemical smell to me tells me it's likely a failing/burnt out capacitor...It would be best to have it checked out at a shop...

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

Answer:Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to get.live.com and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access point....you will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

Answer:I tried to turn on my nokia lumia 630 but the screen doesn't turn on

That's usually the first thing to try. Let it get some juice in it and then try turning it on. If that doesn't work, you may need to download the WDRT program on your computer and plug your phone in there to reset it.

I saw that there were others with this issue. I already tried things like resetting the ram, taking out my battery. Even with my laptop plugged in, not lights are showing up and the power button isnt starting anything. I tried to listen and hear if anything was happening, but no luck. I just to get help if there is anything I can do to trouble shoot or just figure out what the issue is so I can get it fixed . I was running Windows 10 on there.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Does anyone know if the new Maps app being built for the phone and PC features voice turn-by-turn navigation? I know the current Maps app does not. You need to use Here Drive or another third party app for voice navigation.

Answer:Will the new Maps app have voice turn-by-turn directions?

I forget where I read it earlier. I think it was either ArsTechnica, The Verge or WinBeta. Cortana is supposed to give turn by turn directions and can be asked to repeat them. The maps app is also supposed to be designed by Microsoft, but also uses HereDrive. The actual default camera app for all phones and probably pc's, laptops and tablets is actually Lumia Camera.

I just picked up the HP Stream 8 at the MS Store this weekend during their VIP event (25$ off 75$ or more). I actually haven't opened it yet, because I'm still deciding if I should keep it.
One thing the HP Stream 8 seems to have is GPS. I say "seems" because no one at the MS store even knew that it had GPS--- I had to tell them about it and pull up the HP website to show them the specs.
I've loved having HERE Maps and HERE Drive on my Lumia 521 because of the downloadable offline maps. I try not to pay for data since I'm near wi-fi 95% of the time, so it is nice that the GPS works without requiring data.
Although there is a HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1, I haven't been able to find an app that is like HERE Drive, with turn-by-turn navigation.
Is anyone aware of such an app?
Thanks!

Answer:Any Windows 8.1 apps with turn-by-turn navigation?

I've used CoPilot Live for a few years and like it's turn by turn ability. I think there is a try version on the store.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

Answer:x201 wireless always suddenly turn off and can not turn on again.

Yes, i have the same issue. Though it suffices if you deactivate and activate your WLAN adapter @ networkcenter, you don't need to reboot. This happened to me a couple of times as well.

I disabled Multi-Core in BIOS so i don't have regular lags.I always keep energy saving settings to "Maximum Performance" so i don't have regular contrast issues.I deinstalled ThinkAdvantage Access Connections so i don't have random WLAN Adapter "power offs".

New W510.  (4318 CTO, 16GB, WIndows 7)  Used new 640GB drive to install Windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch.  Installed lasted versions of drivers from Lenovo W510 support site.  Almost everything works, except the WiMAX. WiMAX shows up and seems to be properly controlled in the preload.  It does not show up in my rebuild, so the HW is there. Among other things, I installed Power Management Driver, Power Manager, HotKey Features and the Intel WiFi WiMAX 6250 v13.00.0000 (both WiFi and WiMAX parts) but just the WiFi part shows up in the OnScreen Display when using FnF5.  The WiMAX does not.  The drivers show up in the Control Panel programs list and there were no problems indicated during installation.  Am I missing something or is there a trick to the installation order?

Answer:W510 WiMAX cannot turn on or turn off with FnF5

A bit more information:  Under Network Connections the WiMAX adapter is listed as unplugged. Local Area Connection 2   Network cable unplugged    Intel(r) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Seems odd to me that it is not listed as a wireless device. Any suggestions on how get the WiMAX working?

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

Hello i've Toshiba C55-B5302 when i try to turn on and then turn off again. You can turn on the laptop as normal. The LED lights on the laptop light up, but once this is done, the laptop just runs for 5 seconds and it automatically shuts off again. You can hear the fan run for a while but other that it just turns off. So what is the cause for a problem like this? i've dissasemly it and clean the fan there's no dust, i've remove the battery and keep the power button for 60sec read it on other forum, press many times the power button without the battery and the charger to reset the bios info, but without any luck.

In the last couple of months we have begun seeing some of our secure sites failing in IE. Many will work in Chrome or in Firefox, as a business standard we prefer IE.  The SSL is off by GPO. TLS 1.1 and 1.2 are on (TLS 1.0 is off for a reason-but
had this problem even before the change.) Have turned off and back on by GPO and still have issue.  We do not want to turn back the clock and use SSL (nor would our auditors permit it). Any suggestions?

Hey all I'm new to this forum but I've built a few computers in the past but have never experienced any problems like this.

Case: Powerspec Cooler master case
Processor: Intel i5 750(quad core)

Here are some pictures of my build and a video of what is going on.

Video: youtube.com/watch?v=UbuFZJQnlds

As you can see the PSU, CPU, and Case fans are turning on and the Motherboard LED lights are blinking and then they quickly turn off. I dont think its a problem with the Power Supply because I have already returned one with the same issue thinking it was defective.

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

I have a Dell Dimension 5000. For the last few months I have intermittently been unable to switch on the p.c. The first time it happened the button I press turned to flashing orange instead of green and pc wouldn't power up. Even when i disconnect it from the mains the power button will still remain lit as orange for a while. I put it into the local repair shop and when they pressed the button it started first time. They checked everything inside the p.c. but could find no faults. motherboard, fan, power unit etc working fine. Cost me Ģ60! I've turned off hibernation , stand by etc. If i leave the p.c. for several hours it will switch on. it's really frustrating. Does anyone have any clues what has gone wrong?

Answer:Computer won't turn on.

I had a Power Supply that acted like this once. It's impossible to deduce what may be the problem, many different parts might cause it - you'll only find out by substitution. Try unplugging the PSU from the motherboard, and firmly replacing the connector first - then try another PSU."Even when i disconnect it from the mains the power button will still remain lit as orange for a while."That's normal - it usually takes a fair few seconds for the power from the PSU to die fully away.

Answer:Cannot turn on computer

sounds like a short in the connection to either your walll or to the powersupply. could be a faulty powercable.. seems like the most logical thing, try using another cable to connect from your pc to the wall. if that doesnt work, its a problem with the PSU or wall outlet. you can test the outlet with another device to eliminate that.

Hello,

I was working on my medion computer this morning, when suddenly it turned off, and it is now refusing to turn back on. I have done what it advised me to do in the computer manual, which was to turn the power supply off, press the on button for ten seconds then turn the power supply back on after five seconds and turn it on.

When it crashed I was using:
Windows Media Centre
Windows Media Player
AOL Vista Ready

I have tried the following to get it to work:

Change which socket I use
Change the cable
Leave it for a while
What the manual said
Unplugging all connections and trying to start it

Does anyone have any other ideas I could try or know what is wrong with it?

Thanks

Answer:Computer won't turn on

HI dan ..

try using a different power supply .. there are other things that you could try first like removing all the power cables to HDD's & CD\DVD's, removing everything but the CPU & CPU FAN and power supply connectors from the motherboard and then try powering on again but I reckon it might be easier to raid one of your other PC's for a similar power supply and see if it boots using that .. and at the same time the other power supply could be checked on a working PC to see if it works .. just take care doing it ..

I recently bought a Biostar M7VIG 400 motherboard and it worked great for about 8 hours. I turned the computer off and went to bed, got up in the morning and my comuter won't turn on.I checked the power supply and changed all cables but still nothing. Anyone have any other ideas?

Answer:My computer won't turn on

make sure the actual cable to your powersupply works, try to use that same cable to power on your monitor (same connections) in any case, try to pop out the CMOS battery(looks like a BIG watch battery onyour mobo) for about 5 minutes to reset your mobo, is nothing else works, you may have a misconfigured connector leading from the actual button TO the mobo, try there. Cheers and I hope you get up to speed again.

I'm building a computer for my parents for christmas to upgrade their archaeic thing they call a computer and i put everything together and it won't start up. Everything is connected right to my knowledge and i think it could be a bad mobo. Its technically my first build although i replaced nearly everything when i customized mine, so i'm not completely ignorant. I thought it might be the PSU so i swapped out the 420 watt psu that came with my old computer that worked fine with the 350 watt psu that came with the case... same results- An interesting note both PSU's make a high pitched hum when the switch is turned on and the cable is connected. No juice tho. I have reseated the cpu twice, all the pins are straight- its my old cpu from my computer that i upgraded and it worked fine the day i took it out. I have checked all the cables to make sure they are secure, and the PSU is set to the proper voltage on the back. I'm stumped- i ordered all parts from newegg and the packaging was fine- no dents and everything was brand new. I removed the soundcard-and left everything essential connected and tried powering up but still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas on what i could do or what i havn't tried?

-Syn

Answer:Computer won't turn on

Why dont you put all your specs so we might better be able to help.Did you put the motherboard in a new case.If so try to take it out with everything still on the mobo and lay it on some static wrap without the drives hooked up and see if it powers up.It could be grounding out on the case.

I own a Dell Dimension E510, which stopped turning on a few weeks ago. At first, it wouldn't boot into windows, but the power button would flash orange (like stand-by).

I brought it in to a PC shop, and they cleaned a lot of dust off it, which made it work for a day. However, it wouldn't even respond when I pressed the power button on after that.

I brought my PC in again to the shop, and they figured it was the power supply. So, I replaced the power supply, and the power cord, and it worked fine in the shop. However, when I returned home, it still wouldn't turn on.

I figured it was the power outlet, but it wasn't. My computer wouldn't turn on with any of the outlets in my house (which work fine).

So, I'm left with this problem: My PC turns on in a neighborhood store, but won't turn on in my house.

Please help!

Note. I posted this previously in the 'Other Hardware' section, but I'm not sure how to delete it (I'm not trying to double post)

Answer:Computer won't turn on

Maybe your computer needs more power then the socket seems to be giving it. Is their anyway that you could try it round a friend or neighbours house maybe?

I have a bizzare computer problem.

When I tried to turn on my computer, the power light came on momentarily and then shut off. I opened up the case to investigate and shut off the power supply and turned it back on. The motherboard stand by light was illuminated and I proceeded again to try and turn on the computer. Both the CPU fan and Video Card fan momentarily fired up and then shut right down again. Nothing.

I have detirmined for certain that it is not a power switch problem, or a power supply problem.

I'm assuming it somehow motherboard related or there is a breaker that has tripped somewhere, but I have no idea.

Any suggestions, cause I am stumped. HARD.

my parents recently shipped me their old computer (that I boxed up in Dec. 2004 and that was working when I boxed it up) and it won't turn on.first, when i plugged it all in, the green light on the back would come on and as soon as i would push the button on the front, it would click off.so i opened up the case. and i cleaned it out -- there was a lot of dust and dog hair in i took it all out of the fans and stuff (it was bad, they live in the west and there was tons of dust).when i plugged it back in and the green light came on and i pushed the front button, it actually came on. i was very excited and there was an error about some fatal error or exception or something. (silly me--i didn't write the code down...)so... i thought all was great. until i attempted to turn it back on after it being off for about 2 weeks.now the problem is back--green light comes on .. but nobody's home..does anyone have any suggestions? i would be most grateful! thank you...

I just assembled a system on Tuesday for a friend. It's an Athlon X2 3800+, 2GB DDR2 800, and a single Geforce 7900 GS. Today, it was left running for a while and went into sleep mode. It would not turn back on. So he pulled the cord to the power supply and plugged it back in and now it does nothing when the power button is pushed, no PSU fan or case fans or lights or anything. I figure either the power supply is bad or the signal is not getting from the power button on the case to the power supply.

A couple of thoughts... Maybe the power supply that came with the case could not handle the 7900 GS; might be helpful to know that 3DMark was running at one point (we did use the computer under a load for a short time), and when the computer stopped working, it was not under a load. The PSU is rated at 400w; the video card recommends 450w (500w for SLI). The power supply, however, has two 12V lines wtih 20A on each. The combined rating says 25A. (Pretty good I thought for a power supply that comes with a case.) One of the newegg reviewers for the 7900 GS said the following:

"I have this baby in a Shuttle SK22G2B XPC, which only has a 240 watt ps. People, please do some research and don't assume half these kids know what their talking about. Don't let the two additional molex connectors needed to run this baby scare you into buying a gazillion watt power supply. A solid 350 watt ps from a reputable manufacturer should be sufficient." (Is this true?)

I'm not sure if this is where to post this, but I think I may have downloaded a virus. I don't really know, but the other day my computer started freezing up every second and continually restarting itself without me doing anything so i shut it down for alittle while and when I tried starting it it wouldn't load up. It was all a page of 01's and then it said enter a disc and press enter so i just pressed enter anyway and it was a half page of just 01's. I restarted it again and pressed DEL to exit setup which went to some fail safe setting and I started looking at some setting which said disabled and I clicked enabled and then the computer just shutdown automatically and won't even turn back on at all. When i try to turn it on it shuts off immediately. I don't know if I just screwed it up even more or if I had a virus that just wiped out my OS or hardware failure or power failure. I know absolutely nothing about computers besides pretty much going onto the inernet so i have no clue what is going on. I just basically want to know if it can be fixed without me losing everything that I had stored on my computer or if it is totally fried. Someone please help me. I go to school online and need my computer to do school work and I have alot of things on my computer that I don't want to lose, namely all of my son's baby pictures and some important documents. Answer:Computer won't turn on

It is difficult to tell the problem from your post, however I would surmise that your hd has failed. To check this use the computer you are using now to download the hard disk mgf's utility for checking the disk. You will need to know the mgf of your hd ie Western Digital, Maxtor, etc.

There are two ways to try and recover data.

Method 1
Remove your hd from the failed computer and install it as a slave in another computer. You may be able to copy data / files from the drive. Note I would scan the drive with AV software. If unable to copy data, there are data recovery programs that can SOMETIMES recover files from failing drives.

Method 2 Boot with your win2k cd. Choose repair from the first menu; once in the Recovery Console type "chkdsk /F" without quotes. See if it repairs / finds any errors.
Restart and see if you can access your system. If not you can try a repair install of win2k. Boot with the win2k cd and choose install at the first menu. Next menu will show any previous win2k install and offer to repair it for you. Let it do so. If the repair install is successful, you will need to reapply all updates, patches, hot fixes, service pack 4 and any updates to IE.

Sooooooo,I was in safe mode cleaning my computer, which was riddled with viruses, worms, whatnot, with Kaspersky AV.  I chose the option to delete any viruses found, then turn computer off, and went to bed.  Apparently that was WRONG!  When I woke up and tried to turn the computer on, I got nothing.  I tried turning power off, then back on.  All I got was a brief flash of the Dell page, then it went black, into nothingness.  I am on my very old computer writing this in a panic, as I have lots of work to do today on my "good" computer.  Any help would be deeply appreciated. Please forgive me if I posted in the wrong place.  I am (obviously) a newbie and have no idea what the problem is.

Hello experts from all around the world !My friends I am in shock: I have a DELL Precision 360 with two Hard Drives of 500 GB and 4 GB of RAM, I never turn it off since I use it a lot at all times. Well my friends last night it happened the unexpectable: after I defragmented my Hard Drives (which I make once per week) and I cleaned my Recycle Bin, I re-started it as I always do. O.K., then it appeared from nowhere a medium size black color rectangle occupying around 1/3 of my screen and the mouse didn't work properly, I mean the arrow was very erratic and I couldn't even to point it out the "Start" buttom; so the only option I had was unplug everything from the wall (actually from my dedicated Sub Station), hoping that any problem will be cleared afger that re-start.But after I connected the PC back to the Substation and I pushed the "on/off" buttom of my console nothing happened, it just did not work at all. So now my friends now I have no PC at all. I am writting this post from the laptop of my daughter.I wonder if the problem has something to happen with the Power Supply ? although I have four 21" CRT monitors I have had never one single problem with it before. Or perhaps the problem has something to do with the battery of the PC ? I don't know what the problem is, so please help me my friends, I am lost without my PC...Thanks in advance for your insights and suggestions. Best, Antonio.

Hi everyone, I realize many people have asked this before, but none sounded like mine. Here goes.WindowXP Custom made computer, 6-7 yrs oldNot sure of the restMy mother's computer was having trouble. It would turn on, but wouldn't boot past the windows screen. She got my cousin to look at it, and he apparently did Recovery Console twice. This enabled her computer to boot into safe mode, but not normal mode. All of her information was still there in safe mode, so my cousin said everything was fine and turned the computer off. Then it wouldn't do anything. It acted just as if it had been unplugged.I went over there to make sure no wires had jiggled loose, made sure the video, sound, network cards, etc were all in tight. Nothing seemed damaged, nothing was loose. Put it back together and plugged in the power cord, now there's a whiny/low pitch hum without even touching the power button. The computer is still 100% dead and lifeless, no fans/lights/etc, just this weird hum that has never been there before.I check the wall outlet, that's not the problem. I switched the power cord with a new one, still nothing. I unplugged everything except the monitor, still nothing. There's no AC switch on the back that could have been bumped. I don't know what else to do? Did my cousin delete the system or something? Please help, she's really upset she'll loose all her pictures and stuff.Merry Christmas!

At all.
Yes, it is plugged in
I press the "on" button, and NOTHING happens, no fan, no lights, nada.

One thing, there was like a red switch above my power socket on the computer, (where the lead goes into) with 230v and 115V, and I switched it, from 203 to 155, and then it didn't work. That might be the problem, I don't know. But when i switched it back to 203v, still, nothing happened.

The last time I turned it off, I'm pretty sure I just shut it down, like I usually do, instead of putting it on stand-by.

Answer:Computer will not turn on!

Not sure where you are located but if in US, and you turned it on after switching that, then you blew out power supply though it sounds like it was blown anyway and is your issue. I hope it was blown before you threw the switch because if not you may have done considerably more damage then that. Personal;ly it is time to take the power supply out and to a shop fopr testing...perhaps the whole tower.

The only way I can turn off my laptop is by pushing the off button on the upper left side of keyboard, I seem to remember that turning off laptop that way is BAD and can cause damage....true??
Anyway back to the problem, I click on the start button and click "turn off computer" then the popup shows "standby", "turn off" and "restart" I click either turn off or restart and nothing happens, the hour glasss shows for a few seconds then goes way and my background and desktop icons just sit there.
I recv this error msg when starting my computer, I go thru the "windows starting up" msg then the "welcome" screen then my desktop items appear then this error msg "error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\ugicksnd.dll", access denied, it also says RUNDLL at top of error box.
All coments, suggestions welcome, thanks, Mike

Hi Guys,

Answer:Computer won't turn on.

Sounds like a Power Supply issue. Try to remove the power cable, wait 15 seconds so it can drain the power, move the voltage switch (red switch on back, you will need a pen or flathead) to 230, wait 10 seconds then move it back to 115. Plug in the power cable and test it.

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide!

A little over 2 days ago now my PC [Gateway GT5228 64 X2 dual core, Windows XP Pro 2002 (CDs did not come w/bundle) SP2] started refusing to power down after clicking on "Turn off computer" via the Start Menu. Tried it several times, Norton (IS ver. 15.0.0.60) did close, as did Counterspy. Finally turned it off with the "on" button on the tower. I rebooted, no problems or messages, ran complete scans with Norton, Counterspy, and Ad-Aware. No issues.

Still could not get the "Turn off computer" to work. I pushed the button again and rebooted. Ran another full Norton scan. Did some searches on the net and found you folks. I read the 5 Steps to Peace Of Mind and have implemented all but two. I downloaded and ran both Zoned-Out and Spywar Blaster. No "failures" on SB. I did the online Panda scan - twice. The first time it would not allow a disinfect. I did get the text file of scan (14 infections, but I only see 8 there) - when I tried to register for an account, it kept replying "Oops!" - there was an error. I would up scanning a second time and did manage to register - it still gave me that "Oops!" window and did not disinfect.

Before I sent you this plea for help, I checked for Windows XP updates - it tried to install SP3 twice and failed both times. It asked for me to use CD2 in Office SP Pro - which I do not have (I do own home edition, but not Pro) ... Read more

Hi.
I'm getting a new computer later this week and decided to purchase a new computer desk. I set the new desk and set my computer again. When i tried to turn the computer on, nothing happens. When i turn the computer on, a orange light is at the front and nothing else happens. i can also hear the fan working.
all wires are correctly inserted and it still does not work. i dont really mind that the computer doesn't work but it has many files that i need and files that i was hoping to copy to my new computer.

If anyone knows how to turn the computer on, i would be very greatfull.
and if anyone knows if it is possible to take my hard drive out and put it in the new computer.
i dont know too much about computers so please be nice.

Thanks.

p.s. sorry about the title of the topic. my mouse moved to it whilst i was typing and i forgot to edit that. =/

Well I got up this morning and my computer won't turn on at all. And I don't really know what to do. Yesterday it was having some problems and just restarting over and over.. Uh, so I decided I'd see if there's anything to do in this situation. Thanks for the answers.

Answer:Computer won't turn on..

Are the lights coming on at all? If not, my first guess would be the power supply. A failing power supply will reset your computer. There are a myriad of other issues it could be (motherboard for one), but that is the easist to test out. If you are fairly knowlegable, find a computer that is similar to yours and see if you can swap the power supply. Just be very careful to put all the right cables back, and don't force them into place.  Good luck!

I am not sure what happened, but this is the story. My son put together a new computer for me. I wanted to keep the old one for the kids for school and older games. He transferred some info from the old hard drive to the new, and put the old one back. I turned on the old computer and it started up and ran fine, but I noticed a rhythmic clicking the whole time it was on. The nest day we used it again and there was no clicking. The third time we tried to turn it on, nothing. No power at all. I had a feeling the computer was on it's last legs, that's why my son put together a new one. It had been making a lot of noise for many months. I don't know where it was coming from, but it was kind of a grinding sound. It did not do it all the time either. I would really like to get it running again so it could be used any ideas as to where to start? Is it the power? Is it the motherboard? Is it the hard drive? Is there a way to check these things before purchasing new ones? Thanks!

Answer:computer won't turn on

It sounds like the power supply. Most computer shops will test your power supply for a small fee. If it's just going to be a beater computer, then a cheap power supply will suffice for about $30.00. Make sure it outputs at least 350W though.

I have connected everything, the stand offs on the p35 ds3p the fan, with thermal paste, the 8600gt, the drives, and all the plugs, with the power supply. after pushing the power button, it flashes on for about 1 second, the fan in the supply moves slightly, and then it stops. its happened about 3 times now. what could be the problem? could it be a faulty power supply? do the wires touching the case cause a short? or is that negligent? also, could it be the motherboard being shhorted? thanks for any help...

Answer:Computer Will Not Turn On

Could be many things. I'd say could be a short. Also, this happened to me and it was because the processor was fried.

I've just gotten the last part (The RAM) of a new computer that I was building myself. I put everything in its rightful place (I think), and I've gotten quality parts as well... But my computer won't turn on.

When I hook it into power, the light on the motherboard goes on, so I know it's getting power, but when I press the power button, the light goes on on the front of the computer, but the computer doesn't come on. A fan in the back flashes on and off (LED fan) - it looks like it's getting power for a little and then not... But the light on the mobo stays on the whole time... Aaaaggghhh - I've checked every connection, etc.

Any idea what my problem could be?

Well thats encouraging to start with, if your not sure if you did something right, then start from scratch, check everything is seated correctly and that the front panel wires are in their correct place on the board, make sure that the hardware such as video cards are working OK and that the RAM is the right type, make sure any jumpers on the board are in the right place, especially if you have one that resets the BIOS to defaults, some mobo makers leave the jumpers in the reset position.
