Preferred Solution: No audio device on my computer + me making problems worse..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, im new here and i only have basic computer knowledge so be easy on me please...

Ok so i think ive screwed up my pc.

My problems started with slow running ie. I have a really crappy computer, but all i use it for is basic surfing and media downloads. So anyway IE was running slow as crap so i figure it must be a virus/spyware whatever so i run SuperAntiSpyware and it doesnt find anything. I run AVG and it doesnt find anything either. I then run disk defrag. My computer tells me i dont need defrag. I cleared my cache of temp internet files/cookies/ etc. and my problems still persist.

And here where i undoubtibly made things worse. I get the idea that i might need to reinstal zone alarm. So i do and notice that generic host process 32 rpc is continuiously using the internet. I vaugely remembered disabling it last year when i first instaled Zone alarm. So i disable it via My Computer > Manage > Servises and aplications and then on remote procedure call i disabled it. i wanted to change the start-up on it to manual but the option was greyed out so i just disabled it entirely. What harm could it do right?

Oh and thats not all, while on my mission to figure out how to disable RPC i fiddled around with a few options under My computer > Properties. I edited some stuff within the remote and advanced tab but i dont remember exactly what all i did. I made a change to the performance and it made me restart the pc but without all the fancy windows and stuff... Read more

Hello blumilk, Welcome to TSF!

Try powering up the computer from a 'Cold Start', while continually tapping the F8 Key.
In the "Safe Mode" Menu select the option "Last Known Good Configuration", and follow the on-screen prompts.

If this does not fix the issue, there are other alternatives that we can try.

Post back with the outcome.

Kind Regards,

Just yesterday when i changed my pc case out, i noticed my fans spinning a lot faster than usual, i checked my windows task manager and noticed a "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation" adding a 15% cpu load totaling 30% with all other processes. the result of this is a 120 degree F average temp, when it should really be (what im okay with) 90F.

My audio is fine with out touching anything, end the process and i get no audio,*note when i did this i got a message from windows saying "no audio?" and went to their site and followed their instructions* upon reading some stuff i go into my device manager, the audio section, and i notice this new USB pnp Audio Device, which i never noticed (or was just blind) till now, uninstalled it and rebooted my PC, the device was still there +i had audio +the process wasn't running.

Turned my PC on today and the Process is back and my temps are up.

does anyone have a good way to remove the process permanently? also could it be the HD audio i connected to my motherboard from my front panel?

Answer:Windows Audio device Graph Isolation is making my cpu run hotter

This post poses a SERIES of many questions. Please try to help, greatly appreciated. I've been scratching my head with this for days now and finally reached out for help..

Question One! ~~~ I have a USB to XLR studio microphone converter, the Blue Icicle that's not working correctly anymore! Very odd. It worked before, than I reformatted my entire computer and it had stopped working. I have not tried the device on another computer yet. I updated my BIOS to latest version, installed for the most part important drivers. The Blue Icicle is not supposed to have any downloaded or installed drivers besides it's basic ones. When I try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers from device manager, but to no avail.

Uninstalling from device manager and re-plugging in the Blue Icicle still leads to trouble, saying the installation failed. I also tried download the device drivers of USB Multi-Channel Audio Device from CNET, yet to NO FIX.

Question Two! ~~~ I am still confused on how to install certain drivers on my desktop aswell, that you usually install on a motherboard's manufacturer website that doesn't have a setup or install, but usually contain only .txt and .bat files. I'm not dumb when it comes to computers but this has me stumped for hours now.

I am just hoping with someone who has had similar problems with their computers to be able to aid me. I'm not sure if this information will be of any aid but this is my current motherboard

As past postings this week probs started with new video card and loss of sound. Seems loss of audio devisce is a common prob with no clear solution?Tried many tweeks in threads etc with no sucessNow with putting card in and out and removing old drivers the PC wont even auto recognise the new card when put in and will not give a display with the video card in place - I have to remove card and use the basic mother board out put.I think I need to use system restore ? But it says it cant go back - another thread said this must be run in safe mode to work? How do I get to safe mode?...Obviously I'm not too good at this! Running XP, card detais etc on my last couple of postsI am getting desperate and my wife is getting ready for divorce!!would greatly appreciaate any helpMany Thanks

Answer:Seem to be making things worse!!

It sounds (no pun intended) like you have a faulty graphics card, but as I haven't seen your other thread and you haven't supplied a link to it, it's difficult to say."How do I get to safe mode?..."You don't need to run System Restore from Safe Mode, but you get to Safe Mode by pressing F8 on startup and choosing the Safe Mode option from the Advanced Startup Menu.

Hi everyone,

I have recently been noticing my system laboring especially when processing video applications such as Skype or even youtube videos, etc. So, I see that my current video card is 32mb and decide that maybe its time ti upgrade.

So, I buy a new Nvidia Geforce 6200LE with 512 mb

Then I realize that my power supply is insufficient at 200 watts so I upgrade to 500 watts.

now that I've done this it appears that neither of my disc drives will read a cd that came with the video card.... matter of fact they wont read anything. One of them has been funny for awhile but now both are on the fritz.

Soooooo........ I go back to Micro Center and buy 2 new DVD/CD/WRITABLE/READABLE/MAKE-YOU-TOAST-AND-EGGS-IN-THE-MORNING drives.... and add them.

BTW, my system is 10 years old +/- so this is all non-sata stuff.

Oh yeah, and just because I could, I added a USB card to give me 5 additional ports. Only had 4 total originally with 2 in front and 2 in back and got tired of swapping things constantly.

So, now the result is that the computer is laboring more than ever. the CPU goes to full use for everything it seems. It used to do this mor4e than I wanted before too but I thought that was maybe a result of the video card being undersized for current needs.

And I am getting this warning now when I reboot that says my paging file is too small or non-existent.

If I didn't have so many files on this pc and programs that I'd have to search for and reinstall and re-conf... Read more

Got a niggling problem with installing a driver for my onboard sound. I recently bought a motherboard bundle (Nforce 7050M-M) and I have got everything working fine but I just cannot install the driver for this. I'm currently using OS XP SP3.

It seems like I have tried every everthing that i've seen posted on a similar problem. I have all the latest drivers for windows, motherboard & Bios.

When I first had the problem it was a code 39 error on the device manager, now its a code 1 error (i'm can't rembmer at what point this changed as i've tried so many things).

Does anyone have solution for this problem?

Please help, thanks.

i turned on my computer one day and the sound was gone. no "speaker" icon in the lower right-hand corner of the screen; no choices available via the "control panel: sounds and audio devices" icon. when i went to device manager, i saw "audio device on high definition audio bus" had a yellow exclamation mark. i saw some sites suggested downloading the realtek high definition audio, but that didn't seem to work -- and now i don't see the audio device on high definition audio line either. any ideas? from what i've read, i gather this is a somewhat common problem but no solid way to fix this. i know something similar has happened to me a year ago but i was able to fix it somehow.

This started suddenly. I had just worked on a windows movie maker file for a friends daughter for a school project and was using nero to convert it to a dvd file. After the first attempt was unsuccessful, my computer was crashing and I rebooted. When I did, I could no longer open my Nero, I got the following error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."

I soon found out, I also got this when I tried to use winzip, or vlc media player.

Who knows what else is effected. I have been searching for fixes, and found several threads here.

I have already tried a system restore to earlier in the day before it occured, as well as tried merging exefix.reg from another post reccomendation, and following instructions from still no luck.

Everything works fine in safe mode and I AM the administrator of my system.

I have a paid version of AVG. Ran virus checks, malware and spyware checks, nothing suspicious shows up.
It has now effected more programs, I initially posted in software, but now Im afraid its a malware or hidden trojan, as more and more programs become effected. PLEASE HELP I use my computer for my business with web design, photo editing and computer generated art.

Yesterday my computer was running very slowly and taking forever or never getting to the sites I wanted, especially clicking on a google search title. I did a scan with Malwarebytes free version (updated) and it showed 20 PUP optional.b infections. I immediately clicked to remove them and restarted my computer. Upon restarting I was horrified to find that when I clicked on Internet Explorer it would not connect me to any of my usual sites such as Outlook, Google, Facebook, my bank NOTHING! So I went back to the scan results and restored everything that I had checked to remove on the Oct 22 11:29 scan. Then Internet Explorer worked again and I could get to where I needed to go. Then I did another scan resulting in the PUP opt.b infections; this time I removed the ones that were in memory, registry value or registry key, removing only the ones that were located in files or folders. Again restarted and sure enough no Internet Explorer again! So I restored all of the PUP infections again and here I am today. Computer is still painfully slo... Read more

I am a nongeek in need of Major Geek Help!

It all startrd yesterday when my IE would not open. I would receive the message:
"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I contacted Dell support and we uninstalled & reinstalled IE. It did not help.

I have a home network, so I downloaded the latest IE 6.0 from MS on a different pc and shipped it to the troubled machine. After install, I had the same problem.

I then shipped Netscape over to the troubled machine and loaded. I got it to work but did not set it as my default browser.

Through NS, I purchased, dnld, and instlld Nortan Internet Security2004 Professional. I also downloaded Earthlink's TotalAccess 2004.

Norton found a Trojan Horse in a file madise.dll and recommended I quarantine it.

It did not solve the problem.

I decided to remove TA2004 and when I rebooted, I get the following message after getting into my user account:

"TaskPanl.exe - Unable to locate component......The application has failed to start because E60Cmmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

After clicking OK, OK, I then get:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

Clicking the OK button will not make the message go away.

For the keyboard, if you are in the UK, get to 'Control Panel', 'Regional & Language', 'Keyboards and Languages'.Select 'Change keyboards' then scroll down and look for 'English - UK'.You may have to change anything else in that window which is 'US' and set it to 'UK'.

For the audio, you need to give us some info re your setup. I only do telepathy after 4 cups of coffee and I'm on #2.

Hi all,
A few days ago I found that I could not open any attachments sent to me via email. The Windows Attachment Manager (I presume) would just give the message 'Failed - virus detected'. None of the files actually had viruses, I am positive. I knew I had updated AVG just before this; while I only remember installing something to do with Rootkits, I may have up allowed it to update another section, I just can't remember. The 'more information' option I saw when I right clicked the virus detection notification took me the WAM (Windows Attachment Manager) page and I have gone through the internet settings on the security tab, as it instructs, but nothing happened. I stupidly decided to uninstall AVG and 'start again' - this is when I realised that I cannot download ANY file - it doesn't have to be an email attachment, I can't download anything and always for the reason that a virus has been detected (torrents works fine though, rather ironically I feel). When I first uninstalled AVG I turned on Windows Defender (I'm not sure why it was off) and it turned on. That was yesterday. Today it will not turn on. I also tried a system restore and that did nothing that I can identify. Normally I google these problems and copy other peoples advice but I'm not writing the correct search words to find the same problem and nothing I am finding is working - or even possible as I can't download! Does anyone understand what I'm going on about?? I'm afraid I'm not a techie so sorry for bad expl... Read more

So my desktop keeps making that annoying ding sound that it makes when you connect a new device, but whats strange is that im not connecting anything. Also, if that wasnt all bad enough, every time it makes the noise it causes my mouse to hiccup which is making gaming very difficult. I have run both anti viruses as well as a spyware and maleware killer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also dont know if its related, but when i try to play my game and run by holding both mouse buttons i notice that my charactor stops constantly. Tried updating the driver and removing the mouse to no avail. Could this maybe be a bad connection and the cause of the noise? Thanks in advance!

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Move the USB mouse connector to a different USB port, see if this fixes the issue.

Otherwise, sounds like the USB connector of the mouse is bad.

I uninstalled what I thought were useless things, obviously not as immediately lost the sound and icon. Can't restore, won't work. Devise manager doesn't recognise.

I actually have made several mistakes. Computer is very very slow. Keeps coming up with end now. Google not coming up as usual server, not sure using the right word. Now have msn messaging coming up as well as bing.

Also managed to do something with the resolution and cannot reset either.

Any help, in simple terms, especially to restore the sound most appreciated.

My main user profile went Tango Uniform. Microsoft calls it a corrupted profile--all I know is I couldn't log in... no errors, it would just return me to the login prompt. My wife's account still worked (standard user--not a member of the local administrators group). So I decided to create a new profile... first I enabled the built in Administrator account and added my wife's account to the administrators group... I also created a new profile (different name) and copied my files over following steps 5-8 from this article: How to fix a corrupt user profile in Windows 7 and Vista: The User Profile Service failed the logon - PC Advisor (and here as well: How to fix a corrupted user profile in Windows 7/Vista)

At this point, I was able to log into the new profile and access all my old files, shortcuts, browser add-on's etc, BUT now I couldn't open Windows Explorer or Control Panel (Error: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."). More reading led me to believe it was a permission problem with C:\Windows\Registration folder, so first I tried the steps in this Tom's article: Cant run explorer.exe - Explorer - Windows 7, but my permissions were set correctly... I still tried the suggestion from the post by James Vessels to type: icacls c:\windows\registration /grant username:F (substitute your log-in name for username). I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Ok, so I've spent the best part of the last 20-something hours trying to sort out a problem of unknown origin, with help from multiple sources, all to no avail... and I think this is the right place for it... it might be a software problem, or a hardware, or a driver... I honestly don't know.

I first noticed the problem after installing an update via Windows Updates which included an nVidia update for multiple screens and some Windows Live Essentials updates. After restarting my computer and attempting to configure the udpates, at least of them failed. Thus making it go through the "reverting changes" phase. After my computer booted up normally, I noticed an icon by the clock that wasn't there before... a small speaker with a red circle next to it, and a white cross through the circle. Hovering over the icon it tells me "No Audio Output Device is installed".

I've tried everything I (and a few other people can think of), but don't really want to re-install windows from scratch, cos that's what it's looking like... So here I am, hoping someone can help!

I have a new Dell dimension E521 with Windows vista premium pre-installed. Yesterday my speakers suddenly stopped working. I have already tried uninstalling the sigmatel drivers, but this didn't help. On the internet I have found evidence that there is a problem with sigmatel audio drivers and windows Vista.
However, the sound worked fine for the first few days, so I doubt this is the cause of the problem.
Under device manager there doesn't appear to be a problem, but the sound icon in the bottom right corner shows a red cross. When looking at the properties it says: " no audio device installed"

On other websites people with an intel motherboard have found compatible drivers off the intel website. I think my motherboard is AMD based, so can anyone please help me?

P.S The problem appears to be widespread. Look for "sigmatel "no audio device installed" in google.

Answer:No audio device problems

Uninstall or disable the audio drivers, then download and install a new set... or if already done, rollback to an earlier audio driver set.
Also, the standard speakers on the E521 fail early and easily if overdriven at all... You might just try another speaker set temporarily to see if there is a change.

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

Answer:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

I recently purchased a new pc laptop, but I had a problem, I tried to set up my new headset but I got the "no audio input device found" I spent about two hours searching what the problem could be, I needed to update my driver, after I updated my driver to realtex I got the "you just plugged in a device to your audio jack" and It still isn't working. it works only for the speaker part of my headset, not the audio part, any Ideas?

Answer:No audio input device problems

Please fill in the "My System Specs" so we know what hardware you have. It helps us to try and help you.

Also what headset/mic are you using? If its one designed for an iPhone/iPod, it is a "trrs" type plug and that is incompatible with PC's and needs an adapter.

Hi there,

I recently dug a bunch of old parts out of my storage room and pieced together a build to mess around with. I installed Windows 7 without any problems; however, now I am stuck without any sound. It seems I cannot find any drivers for my onboard audio anywheres! My mobo is rather old, an Asus P5GD2 Deluxe. I have tried a bunch of different drivers and none seem to work. Any ideas out there? This is my only real problem left to fix.

Asus P5GD2 Deluxe
P4 3.0GHz

P.S. Windows 7 is running 32-bit.

Answer:Solved: Problems with Audio Device

Hi do not see any win 7 nor vista drivers on asus site
the p5 series is only covered from p5-m evo,msi nothing under gd2,you might try going to device manager right click on the device choose properties the details and choose hardware id and post what you find this is your board one other thought is to install a sound card

I'm using my new Surface RT, and Windows is not really that much better with touch.

- side swipe to switch apps. This is an extremely confusing gesture. When you swipe it switches to the last app, but if you go a little bit and then go back to the left, you see the list of apps. There is no way one could discover this, esp after the useless 'tutorial'. There is a setting to not switch but just show the task list, but no one is going to find this setting, esp since most people use defaults

- closing a WinRT app. On my pc, I'm used to middle clicking in the task list. On the Surface, you have to drag it out of the task list, then move your finger down. But when you do that, the app thumbnail doesn't follow you, and you have to trust that letting it go at the bottom closes the app. Once again, hard to use. You can argue that users should never close apps, but I've had cases where an app would simply not respond till I restarted it.

My Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop had to be rebooted and the sound wasnt working at all. after messing with it i got sound but it is very scracthy and sometimes an error pops up that said audio device high definition bus cannot be found. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Answer:audio device high definition bus problems

It seems that your post got missed. Sorry.
Dell suggests 3 different drivers fro you PC. I am going with the recommended driver, but if you happen to know that that you had Sigmatel sound instead of Creative (SoundBlaster), let me know and i will linkt that one for you.

It is always a good idea to install your chipset drive rfirst:
Intel Mobile Chipset
And here is your audio:
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio

If this doesn't get you going, post back what you see in your Device Manager.
For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
For Vista: Go to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

Answer:Problems with system shutdown and audio device

I would not sweat the driver issue, but rather disable the sound card in your BIOS and run without it to eliminate or isolate it as a problem. This is how computer techs would work. Remove one thing at a time until you figure it out Obviously, you will not be able to use Media player, etc., but hopefully can determine that it now shuts down properly. Your also lacking service pack 2, so I hope you have other important system drivers like Intel chipset drivers, which might be worth a shot before removing the sound card...

I recently had to reinstall windows xp media center, and with that, somehow the devices lost the drivers. I say lost the drivers, because mysteriously the gateway restore cd does not have the drivers in them. I was able to find the ethernet drivers so i could connect to the Internet and the ATI gfx driver, but that is pretty much all i was able to find.

I am still missing the drivers for two devices, and the drivers I was able to find for the audio are not working at all... probably not compatible with my device or something, which is very strage because I got the driver from Gateway right after telling them my model number... they have this awesome list and everything... but no cigar for me.

Thanks in advance for any help y'all can offer me here...

Here is my Everest report for the relevant areas:

Answer:Gateway MX6453 Audio device problems...

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

The report doesn't mention which Windows service pack you have installed. If you have service pack 2, then you'll need to download and install the Microsoft UAA high-definition audio update, known as KB888111. You can download it from this direct link. When that's done, download your sound driver from this link and install it. Restart the PC when the install is done and that should do it! If you have SP3, you'd simply skip installing the KB888111 update (it is not compatible with SP3 and won't install even if you try) and you'd just install the sound driver. Let us know how it goes... if you have problems or questions, feel free to post!

I'm new to this forum and hope someone can help. I'm having problems with my audio, system restore, and search companion (among other things) since running msconfig last weekend and disabling items in services and startup, also deleted items in regedit (need2find crap), just trying to clean up my computer and improve performance. In the device manager its says there is no audio device. When I try to open Windows Media Player, nothing happens, same thing with search companion, nothing. I then tried Real Player and it gives me a message "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it." Also, in msconfig under the startup tab, Windows Audio is stopped.

I was going to try and follow instructions from Grinler from his post "how to fix windows media player error" (reregister the jscript.dll and vbscript.dll files). I did this with success, but when I went to regedit per his instructions to find the registry key hkey_local_machine\software\classes\CLSID\{f414c260-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb58}\In procServer32 to change the value data, that particular key is not there.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated - I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 2400 (purchased new December 2004).

Answer:Computer says no audio device - but I have one

Just one thought - If you have onboard sound and are attempting to use a sound card, do you have the correct one selected in Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - "Audio" tab - Sound Playback/default device selection?

Also, not to be glum, but I have had 1 sound card and one onboard-audio sound card die in terms of outputting audio but they read fine in Device Manager, showed up in all the right places, passed diagnostics, etc., which leads me to believe that it was probably the final analog amp that sent this signal out through the mini-jack that died, not some digital part of the card that could be subjected to diagnostics by the software.

I now keep a spare USB-based sound card that I know is good to test this sort of thing. You may have to install a second set of drivers, but it gives you a process of elimination path in addition to your cable, speakers, etc. Just a thought.

Answer:Device manager Yellow ? !!! Audio device on high definition audio bus

If you right click the devices in device manager and select properties it will tell you the problem with the device and give and error code, its most probably will say you need to load driver files, this usually happens if you've recently formatted and reinstalled windows, have you?Have you recently had some problems?

Do you have any audio at all?

Try installing this driver AGAIN and describe what happens when you install it.

Try Installing these two again also

This one first

Then this

Could you show me the drivers you were trying to install?Just copy and past them in your next post, the direct 3D error is due to you not having a functional 3D device due to the driver not being installed or similar there shouldn't be anything wrong with it since you can use the computer.

hi koushikt,
Welcome to the Forums.
The Desktop Window Manager is a part of Windows 8 that manages the aero effects (i.e. Aero Peek, Window Coloration, etc.). From the screenshots that you posted, it looks like a problem with DWM itself as discussed in this microsoft article.
Can you try to:
1. Run Windows Updates to get the latest patch and bug fixes for your OS.
2. Update your display driver (if you have Intel HD 4000 Graphics, get it here)
3. Disable visual effects and reboot.
Let me know your findings,

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 that I've had to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows XP. Now I can't get any sound from the system. The diagnsotic test work fine (including sound) but nothing from any media players, itunes, etc.. problem seems to be that I do not have any Audi devices installed. The system only has what was shipped as standard so I assume this is some sort of inbuilt device. When I look in the control panel under Sound & Audio, there are no default devices shown for Sound playback, Sound recording or MIDI music playback.
Any help in how I can reinstate these much appreciated.

Do you have all the original discs that came with the computer? If so, you'll have to reinstall the drivers for the onboard audio from the appropriate CD. There should also be a manual with instructions on how to do it. You could also go HERE (links to Dell website for 4550 downloads). From here, download whatever you need and install it on your computer. Let us know how you fare with this, and we'll go from there!

Hi everyone, if you could help me i?d be very grateful.
I have an old HP Pavilion zv5000. I formatted it after it crashed hard on me, and as I didn?t have reboot discs I pieced the drivers together from what I found on the internet.
There was no sound. I went to the HP site and downloaded pretty much everything they had. After a long hard struggle I managed to reinstall the Broadcam wireless drivers which is pretty useful to me as I am stuck in a hostel abroad with minimal wifi signal. However, now whenever I try a webpage I get the old ?this page can not be found? message. Also, the computer seems to be running hot and very loud, and will shut down completely on quite a regular basis.
I blame this ?wmsncs.exe? thing that is popping up all over my HijackThis log. Try as I might, I can?t get rid of it. Any suggestions?
Anyway, back to the sound. Just before I left home to go abroad I noticed that the audio suddenly worked again. However, unpacking at the other end, the same old problem is back. In ?Sounds/Audio Devices? the device is shaded in gray, and it says there is no device. I found Soundmax somewhere and that seems to be on the computer but will not start.
The error code I get for Realtek AC?97 audio drivers is a ?code 10?, even after deleting/reinstalling/restarted etc. I get the computer searching for plug and play devices, it seems to find them, then after a few minutes it tells me that there was a problem and that my new hardware may not work properly.

Drivers are all up to date, it's all plugged in fine and in the correct places. I have speakers plugged into the back and headphones plugged into the front, yet my computer still says no speakers or headphones are plugged in. I have even gone to the effort of reinstalling windows completely but to no avail. I am using on-board audio by the way and it is enabled in the BIOS, please help I've literally tried everything I can think of, looked online on all the forums but still nothing has helped and I am officially lost.

Answer:My computer isn't detecting any audio device help please

According to the ASRock site, this has RealTek HD Audio. Do you have the correct RealTek driver or do you have the generic Windows installed "High Definition Audio Codec"? If you only have the Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec, the first step is to get the correct RealTek Driver. ASRock only has Vista drivers but they are applicable to Windows 7. However, the most current RealTek driver can be downloaded direct from RealTek.

Your system has the RealTek ALC888 hardware. The RealTek High Definition Codecs are the correct drivers.

Also, please post a screen shot of the Device Manager, Sounds section.

Answer:No audio device detected on my computer

Lori P, SWAG, my guess is your webcam uses either a different proggie (which you need) or it's driver doesn't support the one you have. Visit their website and update? Also sounds possible to me that you could access 'sound devices' in your control panel and maybe you need to designate a default proggie?HTH.Ed in Texas.

I recently reinstalled windows xp on my dell dimension 4600 after it was so badly infected with viruses that the keyboard completely stopped responding.

After wrestling with getting the internet connection to work again I've been stumped as to how to get my sound to work. I've updated all the sound drivers and I'm 100% certain that the wires are all hooked up correctly. When I go to audio devices in control panel it just says that there is no audio device attached, I've tried unplugging my speakers and connecting headphones and it's still the same story so I know it's not a hardware issue. I've tried everything I could find on the internet and still it just won't register the sound and there is no speaker icon in the bottom right corner where there usually is. What could possibly be going on?

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Hey, posting this for a friend.

Thought i'd get her to send me a speccy. Here it is.

She tells me the sound originally was working then once she "moved it too her room" it no longer worked.

msinfo32, dxdiag and speccy all detect no sound cards.

can anyone help?

Answer:Friend's computer dectects no audio device.

The first thing I'd have her do, is open the case and double/triple check all of the connections, to make sure nothing came loose.
If this happened during a move, that's the first thing I would suspect.

Hi guys and gals.
I am new to the forum here but I am having a bit of a problem with my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 1535 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. The problem I am currently having is that when listening to music (mp3s, YouTube, iTunes, WMP, anything) there's a hesitation and a lag in the computer (much like someone skipping a record). I have done a bit of research on my own and tried many of the proposed solutions such as: disabling enhancements, virus scans, malware scans and so forth. If there's anything else you guys can think of that could help me I would greatly appreciate it, or if there is any other information I can provide that would help you help me I would be happy to do that. As an avid music listener this is a truly annoying problem that I hope I can solve.

Thank you

Answer:Windows Audio Lag Seemingly Getting Worse

How old is this computer? Is the computer slower in generally booting up - of is it just the audio? I might tell you to running the dell diagnostics - specifically I'm interested in the health of the hard drive.

Pretty much as the title states. I very recently bought a Yoga 720 15 and whenever I plug in headphones I only get sound from the left bud (headphones work fine with other devices). When I tried troubleshooting I realised that Windows 10 is not recognising the headphones, as only the speakers appear in the audio manager. I tried updating both the Realtek audio drivers in the Audio Inputs and Outputs and Sound, video and game controllers headings in the device manager but it made no difference. I've also tried adjusting volume settings, such as panning etc. and when I pan everything to the right I'm getting nothing through the bud (whereas I get it all loud and clear when panned to the left). Do people think this is a software or hardware fault? As far as the two are related, speakers otherwise work fine, I'm only having issues when using headphones.  Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Problems with audio jack - windows 10 not recgonising device and only sound from left bud

UPDATE: So I've figured out that by fiddling with the input jack and having the headphones only in a certain amount I can get sound coming through both left and right, but the sound is like I'm in a swimming pool. I guess it's a faulty headphone jack then. I've only had the laptop for three days so it'll be getting sent back!

here's my dilemma. I snagged my dad's old pc to upgrade his operating system. He was running on windows 98 and he could not get dsl internet. when we upgraded to xp pro, he lost his audio driver. you would think i could just go to the manufacturer's website to download the driver, but the thing is, I don't know what kind of pc it is.. the only thing i can see that tells me what kind of computer he has on the casing is VBOX. no serial numbers, no customer support number. just Vbox. I tried to see if i could see a serial number or model number on the motherboard. no such luck. the V looks more like a green check mark. when I try to do a google search on it, I can never find anything about Vbox even making computers.. AARRGG.. can anyone help? is there a universal driver I can download that will be compatible with this old pc?

Answer:Lost Audio Device after upgrading to XP pro on old VBOX computer

You can try downloading and installing Everest Free 2.2 from Major Geeks.

I don't remember the section, but I think you want Multimedia...could just be Audio---it'll tell you everything from mainboard to chipset to modem get the picture.

That will get you the specifics...if there was a Sound Blaster or some other mainstream audio device, XP probably would have recognized and installed it.

Much luck...

Oh...and some older boxes might even have used the voice modem as a sound device.
Can you post a screencap of the device manager with all the categories expanded?
There may be clues in the chipset there.

Hello. Hoping someone can help me. Since upgrading my Windows 7 to Windows 10, I've had audio problems. At first the audio quality was terrible (hissing, crackling) so I uninstalled and reinstalled my NVIDIA drivers. This fixed the problem but now I find that the audio quality gets worse over time. Once I reboot it goes back to pristine quality and that lasts a day or two but slowly the quality gets worse with more crackling. It's very annoying.

Any idea what's going on? Is it somehow tied to my RAM or some kind of cache that builds up over time?

I'm a noob so bear with me!

Hello, this may be difficult for you to deal with and you may find the need to call on your neighbourhood teen geek or technical friend..
Please can you post a screenshot of your task manager- click the CPU tab to show the processes using the most CPU resources.

If you search this forum for 'crackle' 'latency' you will find many threads on this topic which occurred for a number using Win 10 with older PCs, although it's not occurred recently.
Here's my search for crackle. First ones to look at are those marked solved- but not everyone marks their thread as solved.
Which AV do you use?

I thought this started by opening a link on a news site, but I'm not sure now where it came from. Quick rundown- Was on wifi at work and noticed my computer became VERY slow. After numerous scans with MBAM and SAS, I found quite a few trojans, but even though all programs showed they were destroyed, the problem still continues. I posted a new thread in BC, and had some suggestions, but I'm still infected. Last night, I noticed that my AVG was turned off and I couldn't get it turned back on. Also, any Windows security program was turned off, including Windows Firewall, and I couldn't get it to come back on. I was able to download Avira and Comodo Firewall, but I'm still having issues. Here are the three results after the recommended scans.

I bought new pc parts this week and also bought Windows 10 Home while I was at it, due to W7 not accepting USB 3.0. But shortly after, I started having bad audio problems when using my headset, which is connected to my motherboard's rear 3.5mm output.

The symptoms consist of:
- The audio cutting out suddenly after just a few minutes of usage, e.g. 30 seconds of youtube, combined with the microphone not picking up any audio.

- Sound panel not responding occassionally or becoming sluggish. Can pop up later when clicking on things like browser tabs.

- High Definition Audio Device disappearing from choosable outputs in the notification area.

- Realtek High Definition Device disappearing from the Device Manager.

- Random pop-ups saying that I've either unplugged an audio device or I've plugged in an audio device multiple times in a row.

- Sound panel showing activity from both random thing I'm playing, and the Test Sound button, but no sound actually playing in the headset.

- Usually the sound cuts out with a small crackle, but other times it's completely silent when it happens. When loading the desktop I can hear some crackling too.

- ARK: Survival Evolved crashing, giving me a memory write error, followed by a notification of a decive being plugged in instantly after.

I've tried:
- Installing the latest drivers through windows update, realtek's latest drivers, motherboard's latest drivers and various .cab updates being rejected because the drivers "are up to date&... Read more

I problem has cropped up with WMP 11 that I've tried fixing myself with the Help button and old forum topics but I just can't find the solution.
For about 3 years or so WMP has been running fine, recently it has started only playing audio on WMV files and won't play avi files at all.
This isn't the worst of it. At the same time Windows Media Centre has stopped opening and Windows Movie Maker will import videos just fine but nothing will play or can be cut on the timeline.
According to Windows I've got the drivers needed for this laptops sound devices and the only codecs offered by Windows are for XP.
I'm really lost here. Can anyone help?

Hello, thank you for taking the time to view this. For some reason some links don't work on my home computer but do at my school. I tried them in both FireFox and IE, and nothing worked.

Links like:

Grinler's HiJackThis Tutorial

Said: "Not Found

The requested URL /forums/HijackThis_Tutorial_How_to_use_HijackThis_to_remov e_Browser_Hijackers_and_Spyware-tut42.html was not found on this server."

But they work perfectly at my school, or at my friends house. I'm starting to think its Mal-Ware vs. a problem with my browsers.

But I have the best of the best (pretty much every program Geek to Go admin's and staff has recommended) Anti Mal-Ware applications, and have been scanning non stop all day, and yesterday. Some have detected 1 or 2 problems, others have not, but nothing is better. I think things are getting worse, because now things are slowing down a lot, and programs are taking longer to open up.....and such.

So here is a HiJackThis Log:

Okay, so I have an ASUS Barebone Pundit P1-PH1 system, with a gig of ram, 3ghz processor, and lots of experience.

I usually have no problems getting rid of spyware, malware, etc, especially after looking in these forums countless times.

I have Rkill, mbam, dds, and hijack this. In case that helps.

Anyways, I seem to have aquired some viruses or malware or SOMETHING that is really wearing down my computer. I'm getting pop ups on firefox, i have 5 new processes all running under the name of lsass, im having some really slow times where it seems like nothing will work, my browser freezes, now im getting these error messages having to do with windows .net framework, and plenty of other problems.

My big thing is this. I have been trying to work on fixing everything, but im starting to get worn down. I cant even dfo a system restore point now, everytime i do it goes through the whole process and restarts the comp, but then boom. "System could not be restored to that point blah blah blah"

Please help. I'll upload whatever logs are needed, just please help me get my computer running like it once was :D

(And i'm sorry if this is the wrong forum :/, also I apologize for the grammar and spelling mistakes, its late, the babys crying, and im exhausted lol)

Old, OLD Sony Viao.. been a great workhorse...Problems started with it not booting into XP unless it rested overnight! (Just like me I guess) Real problem is that I need this machine badly to teach classes.
I uploaded all the new drivers on Sony site.
. As long as I use it in the morning it boots.. EXCEPT now the keys are producing errors. Not all, just some.
One forum mentioned problems with bad memory. I have sent for a Memtest disk.. hope that will help confirm.. If so, its a doable fix.
Sony doesn't seem to have a keyboard driver .. I updated drivers for Processor, and Bios.
Any other suggestions??
I don't want to buy a old XP laptop but that may be my only choice.

Help. Internet explorer keeps freezing on me and when it does, I can't shut down iexplore.exe in the processes. I have a feeling this part of a larger problem since I've had a lot of problems with Vista Home Premiere since I bought this PC a few months ago.
I've run virus scans with both AVG and PC Tools. And scanned for malware with Adaware. (my windows defender will not update.) I just installed hijack this and when I run it, I get 2 error screens before the log.

The first error reads "For some reason your system denied access to the hosts file. If any highjacked domains are in this file, Highjack this may NOT be able to fix this"

The second error reads "An unexpected error has occurred at procedure:ModMain_CheckOther1Item()Error#75-path/file access error

Then I get my log file. Also, I don't know if it is related but I tried to download and install Mozilla Firefox yesterday and I kept receiving an error message saying it could not install.

Here is the log file from Highjack this:

I've posted this other places too but I can't seem to get to the bottom of this. I am trying to attach an MP3player to my computer. I have tried to reinstall it and I have checked for and everything should be fine. I think there is a problem with the rundll32 file as I sometimes get an error message saying that I cannot run it as an exe whatever that means. I've tried it on all the USB ports but it doesn't matter. Other USB devices, i.e. external HD and optical mouse work perfectly. The mp3 player also used to work but it doesn't anymore. Sometimes I get the computer to read the drive but then when I try to copy information over it says that the file is invalid ( the file I'm trying to copy over). Can anybody help? I'm on a laptop, using XP. thanks very much in advance for any help. I have uninstalled all the USB ports as well, still didn't work.
thanks! Tora

I am having a lot of problems trying to open Web pages on my Laptop. I use a Wi Fi device (Optus Huawei E586 077f) and my wife also uses the same device with her laptop. She does not have any concerns about reading her Email. However I am unable to access the same mail which is It is a very slow process and drops out before I can read anything. I have the same sort of trouble trying to access Google.
However I can access Bing which came with W10 and I can access other Web pages but not the two I mentioned.
Also when I try to access my Banking I can get the opening page alright but can't get the log in page. I'm assuming that means the signal is too weak but why doesn't it affect my wife and her laptop? Incidentally I did a speed test recently and came up with a Ping of 40ms, a download of .73 Mbps and an upload of .23 if that's any help?
I have been using the same Wi Fi device for several years now and this is the first time this has happened. I am used to getting a few hiccups and don't expect a lot from my device. However things have become a lot worse and I would really appreciate some help please.

Answer:Is my Wi Fi Device or Computer causing problems?

Hello, you can check the strength of the signal with a program such as this:

and thus compare the two PCs.

Also compare your PC when using ethernet and Wifi to eliminate anything other than WiFi issues.

We had some bad storms come in and in the midst of shutting down my computer the electricity went out briefly. The computer came back on and the display was fine. I proceeded to got ahead and shut everything down. The following afternoon, when I turned on my computer... the display was cloudy, had a green tint and I had no internet connection. After a few hours with my internet provider technical support, they told me that I needed a new network card and I would be better off buying a new computer. I simply used the USB cable that came with my modem to bypass the ethernet. Now I have an internet connection again but, my display is still bad and is steadily getting worse. Now everything is darker and has a blue tint. I made the mistake of stopping by a repair shop and speaking to someone about getting a new video card. I was told computers aren't built these days to add onto.    I may not know much about computers but, I know better than that. Yes, my video card is part of the motherboard but I do have a PCI Express slot available. Is it my card or do I need to replace the cord or it is something else? What do I need to fix?

Answer:Display problems only getting worse!

Try borrowing a screen to test first, to see if it is the monitor. Then try to borrow a known working PCI-e card, as yes, if yours is built in to the motherboard, it will allow you to use another card.generally however, this sounds to me like more of a monitor issue than a video card issue, as the colour changed, and I believe if the onboard card was that messed up, it shouldn't boot.

im having quite the problem with my laptop lately, the darn keyboard is being unresponsive. by that i mean none of the keys respond, sometimes my built in mouse does but only if i dont turn it off before the keyboard stops responding. i come to you all in need, im not sure what i can do, resetting it only temporarily fixes it and i cant keep resetting my laptop every time, it hinders my progress with my work drastically. the only way i can even type right now when it does this is through my drawing tablet and my wireless mouse but it takes so long to do this and is both irritating and tiresome.

please, help me qwq

I have had several problems with my comp for awhile, progressively getting worse with the newest being the blue screen errors popping up whilst in the middle of working on the comp & shutting the comp down automatically. Explorer windows pop up one after the other even when it's not error screens also upon shut down, at restart sometimes icons do not appear properly & unable to do anything-have to restart manually...etc.
I will post my HJT log but wondering ahead if I should just start from scratch, however, this worries me..everyone says, besides the obvious backing up what you want before you reinstall, that it's easy, should be no problems getting it all back up but I can't afford to have a problem with the reinstall & end up with no comp up. I was told before on here that I have enormous amounts of malware, etc. & was told by one "My guess is that it would be quicker to start over. It depends on how comfortable you are with the registy and stuff. Sometimes it is kinda fun to chase the little guys, but if you don't have the patience/time/experience, it is better to cut and run."
NOTE: I know Ad-Aware is suggested most of the time, I CANNOT run this on my comp, even the latest download shuts down my computer when I try to run it.

Thanks for all the help last time. Unfortunately, all of the problems cropped back up within a few days (old thread). Plus, I'm now getting constant warnings from AVG telling me it's found a virus "PSW.Agent.QX". I'd love any suggestions.

I originally posted in the IE8 forum and was transfered to the malware forum who found various malware and cleaned my computer but I still have many problems and they told me to post here.
IE8 still getting blacked out info bars, and while I was going through the process of getting rid by changing to classic view etc etc the desktop went to black and white and froze for about 15 secs.
This morning on bootup I had no sound so went into control panel to adjust but got the message the windows volume control was not installed. Repaired that by using my XP cd but then found that IE8 had disappeared. I looked in my programs and found the IE folder but there wasn't an IE exe file, only.dll's etc
Downloaded and reinstalled IE8 but I have the same problem I can't find the .exe file to put a shortcut onto my desktop.
Strange thing is that when I click on a web page link IE8 opens.

What is likely to happen next!!!

Hi davecabezo,

Can you run a chkdsk. There are a couple of way you can do this:

1] First way Windows Key+R and type CMD and hit Enter. At the command prompt type 'chkdsk /r' (without the quotes) and hit Enter. (it may ask you to reboot, so press Y and then Enter)

2] Second Way Go My Computer and Right click on Local Disk (C:) and select 'Properties'. Then under the 'Tools' tab click on 'Check Now' next to Error Checking. In the small window that opens put a tick in both boxes and press 'Start'. It will say 'Windows can't check the disk while in use'. Just click 'Schedule disk check' and then OK. Reboot, and it will run on the next startup. This will check and try to fix any bad sectors on your hard disk.

Let us know if any bad sectors are found during stages 1 to 5. chkdsk may take a while to run depending on the size of your HDD.
