I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Harddrive appears as 50gb, when its a 250gb *Solved*

Go to start - run - type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. From there you'll be able to see the other 200GB partition, format it, and assign a dirve letter so it's accessible in Windows.Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums.

I running 32bit amd 3000+on an asrock k8 mb with 1gb ram, however we wanted to mount two maxtor 250gb hd. in the bios the mb id's the drives but when uploading winxp pro only 131gb is seen. Will drive mounting software or a promise card be required???

Answer:Solved: Mounting 250gb harddrive

Do you have an xp disk with sp1? If your xp disk is an original xp [without sp1] you will need to either slipstream sp1 to see the full size on install or install with your disk and update to sp1 or sp2. After the update, you will see the rest of the drive as unallocated in disk management. You can create another partition in the unallocated space or use a third party app like partition magic to expand your existing partition into the unallocated space.

BTW if the mb ids the drives correctly with the correct size, you should not need a controller card.

My 4gb USB pendrive appears as only 250mb (EDITED NOW )! What can I do? I have tried using the format option on right click...

Answer:My 4gb USB pendrive appears as only 250gb!

Heh, your complainaing about 246 free gig?

Ok I know you mean meg...

Well I would look in the disk manager in the control panel and see what the partitioning on it is. it may be partitioned wrong. You can delete and repartition it to the full 4 gig. then reformat it again.

My 30gb harddrive in my computer died a few weeks ago and a scoured the stores for a new hd. I found a Maxtor 250gb hard drive on sale at Fry's for $140. It was a great deal for the space but I have some questions on it's performance. It's P-ATA 133 with an 8mb cache,a seek time of 9.3ms and rotates at 7,200 RPM. I do a lot of multiasking with Everquest and just general gaming so my pagefile is huge and constantly used. I also do some video editing.

My real question is how does it rate for my needs. Should I look at buy another smaller hard drive to use as my main or keep use this as my only hard drive?

I have the hard drive split into two partitions right now and am wondering which partion actually is on the outside of the platters so I can properly put the pagefile in it's place? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

I have the drive. Its currently the only drive, and I use a separate partition for the pagefile, but don't see (and didn't expect) a performance improvement. I have a rig with the swapfile on separate drives and it was noticably faster. So I would definately recommend a keeping the old drive - wherever you put the OS, keep the swapfile on the other one.

I bought a 250 GB Samsung Evo SSD 840 for my desktop (850 isn't available in Canada yet). I'm running Windows 7 but am considering upgrading to Windows 8 or Ubuntu (or dualboot/vmware). My work is technical and to keep up with the times I am considering Windows 8, though I don't have a touchscreen. I am not sure the kind of configuration to use and am open to ideas. The current hard drive I have is a slow 1TB one. I was planning on setting up the SSD as a cache.

Answer:Setup with 1TB harddrive and fast 250GB SSD

I would not recommend setting up a cache at all with that large capacity SSD. Usually people cache with 64GB SSDs, but in your case, you might as well just migrate data to the SSD and use the HDD for bulk storage (large files).

I bought a new Seagate 250GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100 and would like to replace my old drive with it in my Dell? Dimension? 4400 (Pent 4 1.80GHz, 768mb Ram, running Windows XP Home). What is best way to format the harddrive to get it ready to clone - using (Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk Management) or formating it via Windows XP CD or is there a better way/easier??? Thanks.

When I go to properties on my C drive it shows that I am using 127GB and have 13GB free. I have 160GB hard drive which is really only 140GB of usable space so it looks like everything adds up right, but I know I'm not using 127GB. I went through the C drive and added up all the stuff I have on my computer including all hidden and system files and it wasn't 127GB it was more like 75GB. So then I got the program TreeSize to see if it came up with the same amount that I did and it did it found 77GB used plus 13GB free which is only a total of 90GB not 140GB! I tried wiping the free space with ccleaner, but that only gave me about 2GB back which is part of the 13GB that I have free. Is it possible that all the stuff I have emptied from the recycling bin without deleting them through a program that permanently deletes the files, might be taking up all that space? Maybe I could restore all my files I deleted the delete them again with ccleaner? Even if there were any windows files that I didn't find myself wouldn't TreeSize have found them? I wouldn't think that it could possibly need to be using 50GB.

I was running XP on an old system. One day windows gave me Write delay failure messages in the sys tray. So that day I bought a backup solution and backed up the most precious data first (family photos etc.) I figured I could go back and grab the rest of the data later. I decided to upgrade to a newer system and windows 7. So now I slave the old drive in and when I boot, Windows 7 hangs. If I disconnect the old drive, it boots fine. So to get further with this, I booted into windows 7 and then I connected the sata cable to the old drive. Windows 7 sees the drive as Drive F: and it says its unallocated. I got ahold of testdisk and testdisk reports it as 500Gb / 465 GIB . When I use testdisk to analyze. it does not find any partitions. If I do a deeper seach, it still does not find any partitions. If I try to analyze it by sector, it is really slow. I stopped the prg when it had read 1088 sectors and it reported read failure on all of them I believe. If I only connect the old drive and boot, it hits the XP splash screen and then goes to the Windows did not boot correctly where you can do a Last known good or the various safe mode options. Any option I select from that menu takes me to the XP loading screen for a sec then the whole system reboots. I am hoping I can access this drive and get the remaining data off of it. OH yeah I tried recovery console and chdsk said it had one or more unrecoverable errors. tried fixboot and fixmbr but it said the old boot sector ... Read more

Answer:My harddrive appears to have no partition.

you can download a program like file scavenger or recovermyfiles, there are a few free file recovery programs, then you can in disk manager set your unallocated drive as a new drive, do a quick format, and then your win 7 will treat it as a normal can then recover all your files with software.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

When I do that it goes to windows and gets stuck. Is there any way that I can get to a dos prompt without launching windows so I can run a chkdsk.

So I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X61t, it's roughly two months old. Comes with a 160GB HDD (148GB actual) with about 8GB taken for the restore/repair partition leaving 140GB free for the standard system partition.

When I look at the drive (either on the computer or on the drive properties) it says I have roughly 24GB of free space remaining. The problem is I can't account for 116GB worth of stuff, only about 65GB (based on the files in my documents, program files, windows, etc).

I'm making sure I show all system and all hidden files and I'm still only coming up with about 65GB. So I'm really not sure where the other 50GB is.

What I've done so far:
- Ran a full virus scan with AVG = nothing was found
- Ran Check Disk = no errors reported
- Defrag Analysis = only a 4% fragmentation
- Spybot and AdAware = nothing detected beyond the standard cookie nonsense
- Deleted old system restore points = freed up 20GB of mystery space (it used to be 70GB missing).
- Did the clean file to remove history, temp files, error dumps, hibernation files, etc off the drive = got about 5GB from that.

Given than I freed up 20GB by deleting system restore points, I'm not sure if there might be other things I'm missing that are holding the other 50 hostage. I read in post on a different forum where someone had lost 8GB to Norton AV's recycler. I don't have Norton AV installed mind you but who knows what Vista or the Lenovo ThinkPad software (there'... If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

Hey guys,

I have a home made computer, System is running off a 250gb hard drive. When I first formatted it, it was showing 232gb (this was ages ago) but somewhere along the way it has changed to 184gb. If I open disk management it shows the drive cannot be extended to fill the space, and even shows that 184gb is the maximum that can be used. However when I use diskpart to look at it in command prompt it shows 232gb as the size of the drive. I have tried extend in diskpart, but it does not let me fix the problem.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1.

Would love any help that anyone can give me!

Answer:[SOLVED] 250gb (232gb formatted) drive showing as 184gb?

Welcome MrMatt90.

Does your system only have one hard drive?

Is the drive you mention the one with your Operating System installed on?

Have you created any backups?

Are there any partitions?

When was the last time you ran chkdsk? I suggest you run it on your drive...
> - Click the start globe/button
> - type cmd and run cmd.exe as administrator
> - type chkdsk /r ?: (replacing the ?: with the drive letter, probably c:)
> - it will ask to run scan on next restart, type Y and restart.

Hi there

I've recently come into a handful of old 2.5" hard drives from the upgrade of some EPOS systems. Most of the drives work fine, but two of them, both 250gb nominal capacity (a Hitachi HTE543225A7A384, and a TOSHIBA MK2576GSXZ) both show up as 111gb in Windows (7 Ultimate 64-bit).

PassMark DiskCheckup (under the Hidden Areas - HPA/DCO tab) shows that the Max User LBA for these drives is set to about half that of the Max Native LBA and the Max Disk LBA which would explain the discrepancy. However; when I try and use the "Modify HPA/DCO" option to reset the Max User LBA to the Max Native LBA it just comes up with "Error setting new Max User LBA".

Anybody got any ideas or know of a tool that might help?

I would really appreciate if anybody could give me a heads-up on this problem.I have installed a 2nd 80gb hard drive (as slave) to help out my almost full main hdd.I am running XP sp2 on main hdd. However, when I added 2nd hdd Windows will only see it as a 30gb hdd. The BIOS sees 80gb.I have tried alternative methods, ie. taking out 1st hdd and just booting 2nd, it then sees as a 80gb. (which eventually cost me all my data, have had to reformat both hdd and reinstall). When both drives are installed can only use combined total of 110gb.I am using: Intel Celeron CPU 2.40ghz with 512mb RAM with Windows XP sp2 (home edition).Any ideas?? all help gratefully received.TIA Cheryl

You may have tried to format it to FAT32 with XP - which will only format up to 32GB.The solution is to format it to NTFS, which ca format to much higher capacities.

I'm running Vista 32bit SP1 (on a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop) and having an issue with my reported HDD space.

My HDD capacity is 107GB; Windows Explorer / Properties reports that I have used about 81GB, having 26GB of free space.

Selecting everything (incl. hidden/system files) in C:\ and viewing properties reveals that I have, in fact, only used up about 30GB of space.

I'm aware that things like system restore points consume memory and aren't included when calculating space that way, but from what I've read that's a maximum of 15% of your drive capacity - not enough to account for the 50GB of space that is missing.

I have run the Windows disk error checking tool on the drive but it didn't find any problems.

Just wondered if anyone has any quick and simple approaches to fixing this or explaining how so much of my space could be missing?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

My 80gb hard drive has 7000 files totaling 50gb in the windows installer folder, so I all I need to do is find a way of removing them. Easy, right? I've installed the windows installer cleanup utility, and it found a big long list of files, so I clicked remove and a few useful files like links to programs disappeared off the start menu, but the 50gb of crap is still there. I've found mention of msizap being included, but the utility is installed as a single file with no help file or options whatsoever, so I can't make sense of it. I've tried downloading and running msizap.exe, but the command prompt stuff seems to be beyond me, and I just can't get it to work. Clicking on the icon for it makes something flash on screen for a second and that's it. Apart from getting annoyed with MS for not putting out a fix, I've achieved nothing. I don't have the xp disk to reinstall windows, so the only option I can think of is to install linux and use that til I can afford a new pc.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, so today I received my My 1GB Kingston memory module;
which I thoroughly checked that it was compatible for my laptop before purchase,
My Laptop has two memory module slots.

The previous RAM setup I had was 512MB + 256MB = 768 (759 Usable)
After implementation of the 1GB RAM = 512MB + 1GB = 1.50GB (768 Usable)

These were/are from on my system properties info.

IS the 1GB memory Module defected?
OR is should I have nothing to worry about?

Ok i dont mean the required space for the software on the TB but look at this ill open up my terabyte(nothings hidden) and i will highlight everything right click press properties wait a moment and it tells me how much stuff is on it...... here is a picture for a better example

Answer:Western digital Terabyte around 50gb gone.....

There definitely is some consistency problems. 931-351=580. 931-483=448. 580-483=97. So your actually missing about 100GB.

What seems weird to me is the name of the window showing used space. It should say "Prudence ( F: )" and look like the properties window of drive C:. I'm not sure whats going on, but I think you must have done something wrong.

I'm trying to free up space on a clients SBS 2011 server and have found 50GB of files in the Temp folder in the Windows directory. It seems to be mostly full of cab files that are all the same file size, 116,165KB anyone ever seen this? Can I delete these?

Answer:50GB in windows temp folder

Anything in a Temp folder is typically safe to delete. You'll know if it's used because you'll get a cannot delete error while it's going. To be safe you could just dump them into the Recycle Bin for now.

This type of tying usually happens when techs use temp folders for files they are working on then forget to delete them.

I have 120GB SSD and partitioned it into two C:\System Files (1024MB x 50) and D:\Documents And Settings (1024MB x 60) yet when I navigate to My Computer it shows up as 49.9GB & 59.9GB? I've since encrypted the drives using bitlocker so will resizing the drives inter and how do I get them to display precisely 50GB & 60GB or maybe their is a way to toggle on/off the available storage capacity?

Answer:Want my partitions to display as 50GB (C:\) and 60GB (D:\)

Use partition wizard, you can get them perfect

How many actual GB are in a 120 GB ssd, my 128 GB OCZ is actually 119 in windows. My 180 GB Intel is actually 167 GB in windows etc.

Disk management will tell you the actual size, in the small box on the left side.

Hi, when I go to My Computer, it says that the C: drive is only 122GB. When I right click on the my computer shortcut and click on manage, the disk analyser thing says the C: drive is 170GB (roughly). That's a lot of unused space on a 250GB hard drive.

I just recently resized the C: partition from 122GB to 170GB to add a game or two to WIndows using a Linux program that never failed me before, Gparted. How can I fix this???

My system drive is 120GB and Windows tells me I have 10GB left.

When I check the properties of each folder in the C:/ drive I only come up with 50GB.

What is this data ghost?

Answer:C:/ drive says 110GB used but I can only find 50GB.

Most is probly taken up by System restore and Shadow Copy data. Install TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs and see what it shows you is using the space.

Could someone please explain to me what this folder is in my C-drive? Its enormous and might well be the reason I couldn't SHRINK the partition down as much as I would have liked! ( I am just rebuilding a new pc system after my pc totally died).
I trawled the Web and found nothing, and I am worried it might be indicating a temperature problem with my C-drive which I would like to know before my return period of this new pc (Surface Book) runs out.
The files are predominantly about 3MB each; and seems to be at varying intervals (date modified) of just a few minutes; and all seem to be during a 3 day period.... a few days ago. Ultimately I would like to delete them but it is not hurting me at the moment so I have left as is!
Example of a file name = 00ac45b4-d96b-473f-adf6-636b7211790d
Many thanks, Peter

I was stunned to find out I ran out of space on my hard drive and I decided to look for what I can delete and came across the CBS logs folder under the windows folder. This folder is already taking up 50GB of space and the file is growing as I am typing this. The longer the PC is on the bigger the file gets. I already only have 450MB of space left. I ran the sfc /scannow test and no errors were found. So why is the CBS log folder growing and growing? What can I do to stop this? This is on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I have over 50 GB of folders and files in the following directory: C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Temp

Can those files be removed? I was wondering where all my space was going... prior to upgrading to Windows 10, I had 135-140GB free out of 240GB, when I upgraded to Windows 10, I had 114GB free, now I'm down to 104GB and then I see almost 50GB of stuff in this one folder...

I assume it's all temporary files... some files dated today. Can this folder be cleaned out?

Answer:Over 50GB of Temp Files in AppData Subfolder

The first thing I suspect most will advise is running the DiskCleanup tool. You will find that in Start>Apps>Windows Administrative> and it will prompt you to check system files as well as personal history which woult tend to include now useless temp folders that have acumilated over time not just from 10 but the previous version.

For manual removal that can be touch and go at times depending if some program installer still has access to any. Sometimes the 3rd party apps will tend to leave temp install folders behind as well. The DiskCleanup tool rather then CCleaner for example is the best move at this time to avoid risk of dumping the wrong temp folders?

Presently here with one 10 installation on a second test build taking away the 10.2gb for the $Windows~WS folder and another 19.6gb for a main local storage folder used for keeping updates and small apps, utilities, driver sets, etc. as well as wallpapers and wav files copied into the Windows\media folder the clean install of the 64bit 10 Pro edition comes out to being about 85gb take or give a few gigs! You can clean up some drive right away using the tool.

For the 32bit flavor of 10 Home however you shouldn't be even close to 85gb if you had just seen a clean install. But this is still the initial upgrade I assume where now you have Windows 10 files being added onto the drive as well as what else you previously were seeing bringing up the total.

Typically all those other things you may have put on the drive ... Read more

So I installed Win7 and am fooling around with it and am pretty happy with my $30 investment (student discount). I find, on the toolbar in the lower left, the "Frequent Windows Explorer" folder, and I think to myself that I can move all my music, videos and pictures into these folders. I move all of my music into the "music library" and then leave my computer because I know it will take so long to copy 50GB of music.

I come back about 20 minutes later and delete my music folder. It gives me a warning message that this is permanent. I double check my "Music Library" folder to see that everything copied over, and it appears that it did. I click continue, and my old music folder is deleted ALONG WITH MY MUSIC LIBRARY FOLDER! Holy crap I didn't expect that.

Apparently the music library is not it's own distinct folder but just a shortcut to another folder, in this case the one I deleted.

I don't have a restore point

Oh crap.

Answer:Just installed Win7 and accidentally deleted 50GB of music

Run GetDataBack NTFS. If it hasn't been overwritten yet, it should be able to find deleted files.

My friend is about to graduate from college. She has been using her dad's laptop (which he got on a loan from his work) but will have to return it soon after graduation. She has about 50 gb of data, mostly images and some Word documents. I offered to transfer her data onto my 1 tb external hard drive, but she does not know when she will be getting a new laptop and we'll probably be far apart geographically. She does not want to store her data online for privacy reasons.

Basically, it seems like her only options are an external hard drive or a giant (or 2 giant?) USB flash drives. Could anyone recommend a specific model? She does not have a lot of data and won't have a lot of data any time soon, so I am wary of her buying a giant external HDD. But then again, it does seem more cost-effective to just buy a model with larger capacity. I am wondering if buying say two 32 gb USB flash drives would be a better option. Again, it may be a few years until she gets a new laptop and so she just needs something to store her photos and documents. She doesn't really need much more space than 50 gb. What are her best options?

Answer:friend is about to lose her laptop, needs to back up 50gb of data

Hi people,

I just installed Windows Vista Business SP2 on my SONY VAIO (C:\) which has 50GB, and I had not downloaded anything, except for a wireless driver from SONY (which did not work) and drivers from Device Manager.

After a restart, my C:\ became 6.4GB. I went through all the files (non-hidden files) and found nothing big. I also disabled hibernation (2GB space) and System Restore and there's 8GB space left now. Where did the remaining space went to and how do I restore them?

Answer:50GB space turned into 6.4GB after fresh format and restart

When you installed vista did you delete then reformat? Or just format you need to make sure you delete then format. Sounds dumb I know but that maybe it.

So Im working on a customer's computer that reads the hard drive at 50GB, but the main users folder reads zero bytes. I did find a backup folder that has 20GB. I hooked this hard drive up to another vista box and it still has the same issue. I also ran NTbackup on the computer from a XP machine and it only backs up the 20GB backup drive and everything is still zero? would this have something to do with bit locker or encryption?

Answer:Vista hard drive reads 50GB, but folders read zero bytes?

Hi -

Bitlocker, It is designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. So, I assume this could be the problem, why not just UN-Block what's been blocked?

Another issue could be that the folder or file that's fat could be hidden. You could use a neat program jcgriff2 told me about called Altap Salamander, it's free and will view "hidden" files/folders.

You could do as follows :

I believe I have settings configured to view all hidden and system files. I cannot find anything close to the 913GB which properties reports is used.

What settings should I be looking for ..

to confirm the disk is properly formatted
to confirm that I have access to the entire partition
to find files which may remain hidden

My husband and I are both pensioners with very little knowledge of computers, and we have been given a Toshiber Equium A100-147 from a friends wife after her husband died.

When switch it on as soon as the Toshiba screen appears it want a password entered and my question is what is the password.
I have looked through all our friends paperwork for the computer and there is nothingn there.

Answer:Equium A100-147 - password appears as soon as Toshiba screen appears

I think you are speaking about the BIOS password.
This password can be set or removed in BIOS and its kind of protection.
Without knowing this password you will not be able to boot up the Windows system?

Furthermore it?s not possible to remove this password if you don?t know the old password.
Only the ASP (authorized service provider) technician would be able to bypass and to remove such password?

Therefore I see just one solution; get in contact with local ASP and ask for help.

Greets & good luck

On my 3 month old laptop (HP, Win 7 Home Prem, IE8, Norton 360 provided by Comcast) the link to TSF... and **ONLY** the link to TSF... stops working every couple of days and I get a Google error page with message "Oops the link appears to be broken, DNS error, server not found". This happens if I try to access TSF from favorites, history, manual type in, or from search results.

But I know it's not broken because I go right over to another PC (Win 7 Pro, IE8, same Norton w/default settings) and get to TSF just fine. Then a couple days later the link will start working again. Then repeat the cycle...

I went to the command prompt and pinged TSF and it says unable to find host. I also tried ipconfig/flushdns with router reset and the Win 7 Internet link repair wizard. No joy.

Anyone have any ideas? Malware? IE8/Win 7 issue (but then why just one computer?)

Answer:[SOLVED] Link to TSF 'appears to be broken'

The BIOS screen on my relatively new JNCS custom-built computer has always had a VERY fast BIOS screen -- used to last only 1/2 sec. I have no idea what changed, but about a week ago it became SO fast that it's just a "flick" -- the human eye doesn't see it. It's lucky that I know the key to open the BIOS on bootup is F2; otherwise, nothing appears on screen that tells you that. I have checked and rechecked the BIOS Boot tab for something that increases the BIOS screen display time, but can find nothing.

I really need your help..

I have a 1TB seagate drive which I use for data storage, and a 160GB western digital that I use for the main system. I wanted to re-format my system, so I carefully unplugged the 1TB seagate so that I wouldn't accidentally do anything to that. Formatted the WD, and all went good, but now that I reconnected the seagate, windows says it's not formatted, and it will try to format it! WTF! I just can't afford to lose all that data so I really need to find some work around this!

One cause that I suspect is this one: Before formatting, my main system drive (160GB WD) was under the G: drive letter and the seagate was under C:. One reason that I disconnected the seagate is that I wanted my main system to be C: and not G:. So now that the 160WD drive is indeed the under the C: letter, maybe reconnecting the once-under-the-C:-drive-letter seagate drive makes windows think it's unformatted? I can't think of anything else.

What are my options?

That's pretty much it. It started after I updated my ATI drivers to the newest version. To get an idea of what exactly is happening, in Firefox, when I go to, the links that should be blue are red. When I search google, the links are all blue except for where it's supposed to be bolded (to denote the search terms)....that text shows up in red. \

Also, in AVG, the options (Scan Computer, Scan Selected Areas, Check for Updates, etc.) shows up as red.

The wierd thing is that when I open up those pages in IE.....the links show up correctly.

Hello again TSF,

After being pleased with the Win 7 RC, I bought the full license and today installed it - clean, full install on a new HD. License is x64 Professional.

However, that HD used to have a partition that housed the RC. Now, at startup, the Windows Boot Manager has my legacy XP (still installed - keeping for now), the new 7 install, and the old 7 RC.

I did review how to change my default OS, but that's not what I want to do.

How do I eliminate it having the old RC vestiges from selection?

Then when I click OK, the following message:-"An installation package for the product Status cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'status.msi'".

Hello, you folks are the best!

Anyways, here is some basic info.

My notebook is a Compaq Presario v4000.
It is running Win. XP w/ SP2.
Intel M processor 1.60Ghz w/ 1.0GB of RAM

I can run in Safe Mode, w/ and without Networking w/ no problems

I have tried scanning with the following:
Ad Aware - 2007
Spybot - Search and Destroy
Norton (?)

I have also taken the keyboard out, due to it having a short. Not too long after that the problems started. However not directly after that.
The keyboard "hole" has been covered up well.

A Norton logo in the system tray turns black when the freeze occurs.

I'm sorry if I left anything out, Thank You, Max.

Answer:[SOLVED] XP Freezes 15 sec. after desktop appears.

It sounds like you might have a program that is freezing your PC. If you boot into safe mode and go to your start menu > run > and type 'msconfig'

In there you can go to the startup tab. Everything listed there will start when your computer boots up. You can disable almost all of them (some are neccessary, if you have any questions ask before proceeding) and reenable them one at a time and see if you can locate which program is freezing your system.

I've had XP for about 2 weeks on a new computer. A box started popping up today each time I close OE. The title of the box is OUTLOOK EXPRESS and it looks like it is from MS. The report on the box is: "To free disk space OE can compact messages. This may take a few minutes". I have the option of OK, CANCEL or close. I hesitate to OK this because I have more than enough disk space!! My question is: Should I OK this so I can get rid of the box? How else can I get rid of it? I'm kind of suspicious of this kind of thing so I don't OK unless I know it is safe. I have symantec virus and fire-wall.

Thanks in advance, POOCHEE

Have an IBM aptiva e56. Purchased an EPOX m/b, new pc100 memory, sound card, cdrom, power supply, hard drive, and video card. Put all these components in the IBM case and they work fine.

Problem lies in putting all "old" components into a new atx case; the old ibm m/b,cdrom,memory,processor,power supply, hard drive (sound and video are on-board). The system doesn't power up at all-the fan on the power supply doesn't run. It doesn't appear that any part of the m/b is touching the case. The memory and processor are seated properly. The power-on switch on the case is atx, but has the same 2-wire connector are my old ibm, so I believe that is ok. Any suggestions??

Hi All
Have just been ask to look at a friends laptop that won't switch on.
Apparently she went out leaving the machine switched on and when she came back it was off.
The power supply checks out ok, when hooked up there is the usual led to indicate this.
When I press the power switch all that happens is the power led goes out and a green led along side flashes then goes out.
The machine was working fine up to this point, it seems kinda strange it should just die like this.
Anyone got any ideas I could try?
Thanks in advance

my Font appears broken.. all of my font on all the sites I have checked lots of things to try to fix it.
thin type is especially hard to read. this sucks

Answer:Solved: font appears broken

Is this a problem with the Font or the way it is displayed. I could understand problems with certain fonts but not all of them.

Try Printing a page and comparing it to your view on screen if they are the same then a little more digging is needed. If they are different then it may be your monitor or graphics settings.

Hi all.

I have a reasonably strange problem for you. Up until recently I used the login screen (where you type in a username and password) because, being my laptop, I liked it that way. Now, since dad is going to be using it until he gets his back out of the shop, I switched back to the Welcome Screen for the login.

The problem is, having changed it, the Welcome screen doesn't appear. I have changed the settings in Control Panel > User Accounts (being XP Home), but when I log off, it goes back to the old login screen. There is no error message when I make the changes, and the changes are still valid when I log off and even restart.

What would cause this? Thank you in advanced.

Appreciate of any guidance.

Computer: Windows XP Media Center, HP, Using Office 07

I started having this problem a couple days ago: The folder for My Documents appears to be empty. If I open it, it basically looks like a blank folder. If I open properties>general for it, it shows that it takes up 0 bytes in size/size on disk, and it has "0 Files, 0 folders".

The reason I say it appears to be empty is because I have found that it actually isn't. Example: If I type in the file path for "My Pictures" (which would be contained in My Documents) I am able to open that folder. Same with My music, My videos, and any other folder I wish to open that is located in My Documents. Also, I am still able to open document files that were/are saved in My Documents through Microsoft Word's "recent documents" tool. (Doc's from a week or two ago)

Also: When typing in the file path to open My Pictures; I can access them if I have it: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\My Pictures But it won't work if I have it only: My Documents\My Pictures I will then get an error message saying that it can't be found. This is the same for any folder I try and open.

I got an error message on Monday saying that Windows Explorer had an error and had to close. I was asked if I wanted to send an error report and I said no. I am not sure if this has anything to do with that or not, but I do know that this issue started AFTER I got that error message.

Ok, here goes. Last night I installed a new piece of software, and today on next boot, xp doesn't work at all! I get the message "We apologise for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully" and it then gives me five boot options: 3 'safe' modes, "Last known good configuration" and "start windows normally."

However, if I select _any_ of these, the computer reboots!!!

But wait, it gets better. I insert winxp cd, naively planning to reinstall windows. I select "R" for repair. Waiting, waiting... "Examining disk configuration"... BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!! Noooo! I get the following message:

"A problem has been detected blah blah... windows has been shut down to prevent damage blah blah...

"If this is the first time, do this: disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmenter or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer."

"ntfs.sys -- address F71D22BD, base at F7184000, datestamp 41107eea.

If, instead of repair I select install windows xp, it gets to examining startup environment and then seems to hang.

This is a catch-22 situation... xp doesn't run. How can I repair it when trying to do so itself brings on the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH?? Does some expert out there have some ... Read more

I've noticed a strange issue (see image attached). I've found that there's a new folder, that has appear inside other folder I've been working recently. The new folder, is called "C:", as the name of the drive where I've got windows xp installed. The new appeared folder "C:" behaves as a link to C:\ when I double-click it, but if I try to delete it, then windows notifies me that I'm trying to delete C:\windows folder and that that's not possible. Indeed, trying to delete the subfolder "C:" is the same as delete the whole "C:" drive.
Men, you never know what's the next surprise windows will bring to you.
I don't know exactly what to ask. Do you think this is normal? Thanks in advance!

Hi guys, after spending many hours trawling the tinternet looking for a solution, this board looks like the most helpful, so fingers crossed.

Two days ago, I went out leaving my pc running, I came back to discover just my desktop picture showing, no icons, no tool bars, nothing. Rebooted pc, still the same (also the same in safemode). I run AVG antivirus and also spybot search and destroy. Booted into safe mode, brought up task manager and managed to run AVG and spybot, AVG found 16 instances of Lop.DN which it then quarantined (8 were in system32 files and 9 in system restore files). Spybot brought up usual tracking cookies, but nothing alarming. However the problem still persists. I can get the icons on my desktop briefly if i use task manager and command of explorer.exe, but they disappear again. All scans since have come back clear, no sign of any virus. I've also run ad-aware 2007 and that came back clear. So I'm at a loss now. I can still access my files, but explorer just will not work. My notebook also didn't come with restore disks, apparently the OEM is on a hidden partition on my hard drive. I've put hijackthis on there today and this is the log that it's come up with, however I know nothing about this program so could use some help please. I have access to internet via another machine for a few days.

Am running Windows XP Home Edition. For the past week when booting up PC a small window with red X appears on desktop. I have scanned with my NAV as well as several free online sites and all come back problem free. I have also ran Adaware and Spybot which both come back clean.

Have looked in System Event Viewer and see nothing unusual listed. Checking task manager I do not see any new programs running and have not added any new programs since the time this error first appeared. Have done a system restore back to date before this problem occured, but it did not alleviate the problem.

I am wondering if this could be a desktop issue. My son had changed the desktop them (used a picture he saved) although has since changed back to a standard theme. Have done a screen capture of this window on my desktop and saved the file in Paint, but I am not familiar with posting images and the instructions in your FAQ are not clear to me. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Windows tells me 120gb of my 140gb HD is full. When I add each folder up manually, it comes to 55gb.

WinDirStat tells me I have used 55Gb, yet on another screen it tells me I have only got 20Gb left of my 140Gb HDD.

Hidden files are set to show, restores settings are at lowest. I have a partitioned drive (8GB D: drive) with my recovery image etc and that is OK.

Of note - I had a Windows crash a month ago, I recovered the PC to its day 1 state thanks to the CD that came bundled with the PC. I did however lose all my manually loaded music files from my CD collection (pre-crash I had about 120GB used up, thanks largely to my music collection, but if they have disappeared from view, why does my HDD still say about the same space is taken up).

I think either - windows explorer is wrong or I may have recovery images hidden on my C drive (with all of my music files hidden), yet they dont show up anywhere.

Any ideas?

PS - I am au fait with PCs but not an expert. All I can tell you is - files on C: are NFTS though the D: drive is FAT32. I use XP SP2.

Many thanks

I am using an Excel spreadsheet to keep a simple record of my bank account - i.e debit, credit and balance in three separate columns. Within the same spreadsheet I am using an 'if, then, else' condition comparing two numbers to determine certain information I want to appear in other cells using the 'balance' figure as part of this condition. For most part this works fine but occasionally it doesn't and when I look closely into the cells that determine the condition I want to meet I find that the cell in the 'balance' column is not calculating exactly.

I have all my cells formatted to two decimal places (e,g. 735.25) however, if I reformat them to multiple decimal places it might display this figure as 735.2499999900. This is causing a problem when I have another input figure elsewhere on the sheet of 735.25 and wish to compare these two figures in my 'if, then, else' condition as they are comparing two different figures, which in effect should be the same, thereby not giving me the anticipated result.

Apart from the figures in the 'balance' column - which are calculated figures using the previous row's balance plus or minus either the inputted credit/debit figure from the current row input to two decimal places - I can see no reason why suddenly my spreadsheet calculates to a figure such as 735.2499999900 when I have only input numbers of two decimal places in the 'debit' and 'credit' columns.

For some reason, seemingly out of nowhere, everything I put on my desktop appears also as a duplicate in My Pictures folder. These duplicates are not copies; what you do to them affects their desktop counterparts. This means I cannot move, rename, or delete them without the desktop files being affected. Also when Im in the network and sharing centre and click on the wirless connection the window flashes up but then immediately disappears.

Anyone got any ideas to fix it?
Ive included a picture to illustrate if what i said doesnt make sense
This only happens in the network connections window - all other right click context menus are fine

Got this fixed today just thought I'd reply and say how.

I ran sfc /scannow which found some errors which could not be fixed.
I went into the log file that it left and found that the corrupted file was netshell.dll.mui

I then used my windows 7 dvd and extracted the file from it and replaced the one in my system32 folder restarted and all was working fine again.

During startup/re-boot, the System32 folder would appear. I would close it and then my computer would try to connect to the net (dial-up).

Ran Norton Anti-virus software and found trojan hanging out on my computer. I cleaned it and then Norton would catch hidden files from the trojan trying to rear their ugly head and it cleaned them.

I also ran Ad-Aware 6 and SpyBot. Found all kinds of stuff, and cleaned that.

I still have the problem and need some help. I ran HiJack This and posted it below. Any help would be appreciated.
