Ok to move hardware from one case to another?

Question: Ok to move hardware from one case to another?

I recently purchased a name brand PC to replace one I built myself a couple years ago. I upgraded the video card and PSU, but was comfortable with everything else. Problem is that when playing graphically intensive games the machine will lock up which I attribute the video card over heating since the only has one fan. My old case has 7. Does anyone foresee any problems with stripping the old tower and replacing the parts with the ones from my new machine?

Preferred Solution: Ok to move hardware from one case to another?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Ok to move hardware from one case to another?

placing your components in a different case will not cause any problems, barring that you do not damage the components in the process and that you do not hook everything up incorrectly of course.i would suggest labelling all your connections before disconnecting them, to make it easy to put it all back together.

Hi, I have a Compaq SR1630NX with a Asustek Amberine M motherboard, and I was wondering if I took out the motherboard to put in this case: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/5124886?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Would I have to take the CPU fan out too? Or can I just have to unplug the power supply and components, leave the CPU fan on the motherboard, unscrew the motherboard, and put it in the new case?

Answer:Move motherboard from old case to new case

yea, u can leave the CPU and fan in there, as well as the memory. just unplug all the cables, remove the PCI/AGP/PCI-E cards and stick it in the new case

I am starting to get concerned about my new Dell Dimension 8400 getting hot, doesn't seem to be much in the way of airflow. The whole Intel processor is all new to me...usually an AMD chick, but I got a good deal. Anyway...would it void my warrantee if I put mobo, dvd, & HDD etc. into a different case with more fans to improve airflow? Has anyone else done this? Just curious.

Intel Pentium IV 3.6GHz
160Gb SATA HDD
ATI Radeon X850 XT PE PCIe (256 memory)

Answer:Move Dell components into other case?

I don't know if it would void Dell's warranty or not (although I think it well might!), but if you were going to do all that anyway why didn't you assemble your own machine in the first place?

Okay, my family had an old Dell Dimension XPS T700r. It's not being used anymore so I figure I'd make me a nice little budget computer, salvaging what I can. The only thing I think I will salvage though are the cd/dvd rom drives because I don't see any real reason to need to replace them, a few cards that were in the expansion slots, and the hard drive. This will be my first computer build though, so I want to make sure I'm doing this right. First off, is there anything wrong with me keeping the hard drive and disc drives? (connectivity issues with new mobo and all) secondly, here are the new parts I found:

(500W Power Supply)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3505668&CatId=2851
(Dual core processor)

The only reason I decided to get the processor from tiger direct is because it had the most bang for your buck I guess you could say. If any one knows where I can find a proceesor about the same as that for less please let me know. I do know I don't have a heatsink or fan, but I'm not worried about that right now. So if anyone sees any problems with what I have here, please let me know!! Thanks a million!!!

Hello ... I would like to move my Hard drive from my Dell system that is unstable due to hardware problems into a newer HP/Compaq system without having to rebuild the system which is highly custom configured. This system is a system at a Garage that I support and the Dell got jam packed with greasy dust, brake dust, etc...Nasty and amazing that it still works but crashes randomly, and keeps blowing power supplies about once every few weeks, even ones with higher wattage rating. The Cooling fans sucked all the foreign particles into the system and even after blowing it all out with canned air, there is a problem that is on the motherboard that causes it to lock up and go to a black screen. Then after turning it on and off about 4 or 5 times it might decide to boot and run for a few hours.I tried to place the 40GB Hard Drive from the Dell Optiplex GX270 with a 2.8Ghz P4 w/HT into my available healthy HP DC5000 SFF also running the same 2.8Ghz P4 w/HT CPU, but it wont work. I get the Blue Screen of Death with a Hex Error message about a Kernel Error. When placing the Hard drive back into the Dell it boots up fine, and the hard drive is healthy after scans for problems, but the Dell has some main board issues that are random causing it to lock up, so I would like to migrate to another system if possible.I am hoping that someone knows of a easy way to drop the Hard Drive into a system, maybe with a software application which aids in the hardware transition and reactivation of MS W... Answer:Windows XP Pro.. Move to new Hardware

If you have a REAL Windows CD (not a restore disk) Then boot with that and do a repair install. As it is totally different hardware you will definitely be instructed to call Microsoft. They may or may not be helpful as the licensing on Windows fom an OEM supplier (like Dell) is different than on a retail version that you get at, say Best Buy. One interpretation of the EULA is that the operating system is ties to the machine, not to the purchaser. (Good one, Microsoft!)http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/oemeula.htmSo you may get lucky and be able to proceed. If not, and you have already done the repair install and loaded the Compaq stuff and Microsoft says no, then you may be doubly hosed.I would contact Microsoft first if it were me.Here is the repair install if you are feeling lucky.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspxAs that is an Optiplex, chances are good that you got a real Windows CD.

From what I read a person can make a image/ghost file with all they have to do is restore the image/ghost file to the system and it will work. Now my question is I would have to to to each system and get all the drivers so that the one image that I will be using as the master image to ghost from should have all the drivers and such from the systems I wish to use for that image. How do I move hardware and software drivers from Windows 7 system to the master image one and install the drivers fro that image to the master system?

Answer:Hardware Drivers Move?

Making masters and multi systems ! can you be more detailed, it's a bit sketchy to say the least at the moment.

I am running Windows XP Pro, & I have both a CD-R/RW & DVD-ROM as part of my system. Windows suddenly is refusing to recognize either device ... it says the proper drivers are there, but it cannot locate the hardware. When I go to Windows Explorer & My Computer, the two drives corresponding to the 2 devices are simply gone. Windows recognizes all of the other devices, such as my 2 hard drives & the floppy drive. This happened once before, and I took my CPU ito my computer vendor who confirmed that there was nothing mechanical wrong. I erased the operating system & reinsalled windows, and it recognized the devices again. However, I had to uninstall & reinstall all of my software. It's suddenly happened again ... how can I get Windows XP Pro to re-contect with the 2 devices without having to complete reinstall the operating system from scratch? I am running a 1gig AMD with 526 megs ram.

Answer:transfering hardware from one case to another

To troubleshoot problems like this, remove all but the necessary components (video/memory/HD) and boot. If it works, then add the other components. If it doesn't work, then try different video card if you have one, or if its using on board video, then check the memory.

hmmm...where to start with this one...

Yesterday i got a new case from Antec. I figured, "I'll swap everything from the old to new. Quick N' simple." Quite the opposite has happened. I did that, PSU cords were too short so i got a new power supply(needed one anyway). Plug it in, fire it up, WORKS! but goes to black screen saying check boot device or something. I've seen that many times before with this system, no biggie, I forgot to plug in my floppy(yes floppy). Plug it in, turn it on, WORKS! goes all the way to windows. I see a fan isn't spinning, so i shut down, plug it in and turn back on...NOTHING...NO BEEPS, NO POST, MONITOR IN SLEEP MODE, HOWEVER, THERE IS POWER TO EVERYTHING. All fans turn on, heatsink fan on, green light on the board, video card fan turns on, HDD spins, floppy makes it's unique noise, but it doesn't "fire up".

At this point i'm thinking WTF...Everything turns on but it doesn't beep at me or post and start up, . Put everything back in the original case thinking it could be shorting or something (read somewhere). Same thing. Swapped all RAM into every possible combo, including one stick, same thing. Tried different HDD, same thing. Pulled the cmos battery, reset bios, same thing. Re-seated vid card, same thing.

I am now lead to believe that the only thing left is the board itself. I have a tough time believing that it just "went bad" ironically the third... Read more

Answer:new case, same hardware, power but will not POST

Have your tried building the PC outside of a case? Assemble it on a non-conductive surface (the box the mobo came in works great; just be sure there's no metallic paint or stickers on it). Hook it all up just like it was in a case and attach the power supply last. If no post, no boot, start removing components one or two at a time until you do get it to post....

Good luck!

Answer:Neither Case nor mobo came with mounting hardware

Mounting hardware is supposed to come with the case, not the motherboard. Double check the case for the plastic bag of hardware. It could be taped inside somewhere.

Unless I miscounted the holes on your motherboard, you will need 6 standoffs + screws. You don't really need the washers but you can use them if you want.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and this will be my first post on here. I'm sorry if I have started this post in a wrong thread. I'm unsure of where it should go. Anyways, I'm not a tech expert so that's why I here. I will try my best to describe my problem tho.

First of all, I have been having this problem since last week. The problem is that it just auto shut down on me without any warning.

I thought it was because its overheating/the cpu reached it limits hence why it auto shut, but thats probably not the case.

And since that happened I just thought to myself that I should just reinstall windows. Haha. I thought that would solve my problem. But it didn't.

This crash problem occured when I opened game. I also realised that it happen as well when I browse the internet using firefox. Like after I opened it for a few minutes it then shut down.

However, if I'm not opening anything else and just at the desktop and only transferring files for hours, the crash never happen unlike after I rebooted, went to firefox, then googling stuff and then poof, it crashed. I also checked the cpu too, but its not overworking itself. Its just chilling.... Oh, and I checked it from task manager.

I already tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and went to surf the internet afterward. No crashes at all. I could watch youtube as well without having it crash on me. But when I reinstalled the driver back. It happened again.

So... I don't know really wha... Read more

my Situation is, a domain controller running windows 2003 server, ms sql 2000, and a few other misc databases is on a PC with RAID 5, the RAID is fine, but the motherboard is failing.. the motherboard is a gigabyte s939 with a x2 3800 AMD cpu

i have a new rig almost ready to go for another less important task, and i would love to switch the server over, but its a Q6600 Core 2 quad, running on a ASUS board with DDR2 Ram.

thats a big change, now the OS was installed was 32 bit, but im wondering if there is a sysprep, or redetect hardware on next boot option so i could simply move the raid over and redetect hardware, install drivers and im laughing. or if im better off just cutting my losses and rebuilding the array from backups (i would still have to recreate the entire active directory)

its a pretty important server, so downtime is not my friend

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Fisrt, I'll re-post my message from another site:
Okay guys, here is the deal: I bought a GTX 680 as a replacement to 570, it didn't fit. Yesterday I got a new case, Corsair 650D, and installed everything into it with only new part being the 680. Mobo is Asus p8p67 B3 and cpu is intel 2600k. Also got 3 HDDs, 500Gb old one, and two more or less new 1TBs one of which is my system drive. Upon installing everything I tried booting. Before that everything lit up, including my power button LED, however when I pressed it nothing happened. I obviously connected something wrong but after messing with the cables just used my mobo button, it booted up. However upon booting I faced another problem - EXTREMELY slow Windows 7. Boot up takes couple of minutes which is fine, but the system itself is barely moving. Don't get me wrong, it's the HDD. Animations and buttons and everything works fine but takes a LOT of time to load. Folder icons take some 30 seconds to start appearing, browser boots up for 30 minutes and then loads pages for hours, that kind of thing. Programs boot for minutes. I got 8 gigs of RAM like before but it's not being used at all unless some program finally opens. CPU is also under 1% load most of the time. I thought that it had something to do with cables and ports I used to conmect HDDs, since I do not remember the positions they were in with the old case, but after trying few combinations it didn't help. Also, installition of drivers took windows minutes for each, an... Read more

Hi

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. When I press the power button, the power button light turns amber, I hear some fans spinning, and the CD drive spinning. However, it never gets to the boot screen (or any screen). If I open the case and press the power button, however, the power button turns green and the computer works fine (loads all the way up and functions like normal). If I close the case after it has started, it continues to run fine. I'm guessing / hoping it's not the mother board or power supply that has directly gone bad... but maybe there is a connection or something? that changes from when it's closed to when it's open. I've heard of something like... the motherboard is shorting out by touching the case... but I'm not really sure where to look for that / how. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I am trying to move files from one external hard drive to another but it has been stuck on 'Preparing to move' 'Time remaining: Calculating. Items remaining: Calculating Speed: Calculating' for 20 minutes now. It has not moved on from that.

Google shows only results pertaining to Mac OS on this problem, when searching the message in quotes, it still doesn't give that exact match (come on Google, we search in quotes for a reason), instead what Google provided was results for 'Preparing to delete'

There seems to be no info let alone anybody having this message when moving files.

Can anybody help me get the ball rolling?

Answer:Windows 7 stuck 'preparing to move' when trying to move files

I have Windows 7 pro over here on three computers, and yes I too sometimes but not always get that long long long wait time for either copying or moving folders/files from source to target. For now, I recommend you only copy folders/files from source to target. And after you looked at the target, making sure the copies made it over safely, then delete from the source. I'm trying to recall what and where I saw some good answers, will post back if/when I find those URLs.

Employee claims that while using the Move function to place folders in a different directory tree the folders were moved but the files were lost. I have tried to duplicate the action but have not been able to replicate losing the files. Talked to experts said no way it will happen. One in a million chance it will occur. However, employee claims replicated Move operation multiple times (10-15 folders) and lost files multiple times (7-10 times), but not every time.

Is this possible? I must fire employee for extensive data loss. However, if truly unintentional, and I can replicate as proof-- Employee keeps job.

Answer:Using Move Function: Move Folders & Lose Files

As the experts you spoke with indicated, there is virtually no way this could happen. Even if there was a copy error that Windows didn't detect and abort the move operation, you'd still likely end up with some sort of file even if it was corrupted and unreadable.

One in a hundred trillion chance of happening.

Anyway, The PSU fan is getting really obnoxious, it gets really loud (more or less like a lawn mower). I have taken the thing apart and have tried every suggestion given to quiet it down, which it does for a whole week or two. This is a small form factor PC, so to even take the power supply out you have to basically take out everything else just to get to it. I have looked for replacements but they are very obsolete. It's only 220W anyway, so i'd like something a little more powerful.

What I want to do is get a larger case that I can use the same hardware is (motherboard, drives, etc) and purchase a larger power supply for that case. 220W really limits the PC. The small case holds a lot of heat even with all fans cleaned and working properly. Even just taking a CD/DVD out that was in it is very hot. I want a case with better airflow than this one.
I really am not sure what kind of case to get that will meet my needs. I don't want anything really fancy. If possible I'd like to get it off newegg.com

Any suggestions would be great.

I have a poor sub-standard case at home for my PC. The PSU is causing a lot of vibration noise that is resonating downstairs and thus causing a headache for everyone.I am not interested in buying the super-expensive flashy cases that are out there on the market. What I would like to know is if there is a suitable case which has a fairly quiet PSU and more importantly is able to reduce noise as well as not being too expensive. The maximum I would like to spend on a case is 70. I am not eager to visit the computer fayres because most of the cases sold are nasty. I would like to buy a case from a reputable case manufacturer/reseller. It has to be a midi-tower and is able to accomodate a standard ATX motherboard but with ample room for me to install/uninstall hard drives etc. It would also be a bonus if the case came with front USB ports.I would be grateful for anyone's advice. Thanks.

Answer:Case Dilemma - Advice on ATX comp case needed

There are many ways of damping the noise factor of cases Without buying anew..In fact Ive had the opposite problem .My old case along with system was very quiet..but due to continually trying new cards and combinations of hardware I had the panel screw give up the ghost leading to a slight rattle. So I bought a new bigger 400wt Psu type case with more drive bays in which I fitted drive caddies and new Silent volcano heat-sink for CPU , Fine where I use it but resonant noise a real problem, I resorted to Standing the whole unit on sound proofing rubber/foam pad and making sure the unit didn't touch any walls or surfaces of walls..A quick test can be using a cushion of the a seat with a piece of flat ply on top to keep the unit square and not impede the air circulation and put your tower on that.

but when i press the switch button it works normally , and the screen display normally and there are no beeps , but after like 20 second my computer turns off automatically ! ,

what may cause this issue ?

Answer:i replaced all of my computer components from my broken case to other case

could be overheating CPU. Did you apply fresh Thermal paste to the HSF after reinstalling the motherboard? Is it tight and secure? Did you blow out all the dirt, dust and debris from the fans' fins?

Hi all,

Here's one that's got me vexed.

Is there a way to select a row in a continuous form and do a "Move up" or "Move Down" so that it not only moves the record on the form but also shows this resequencing in the ouput report.

Currently the row source is an SQL query from a table.

Im aware how to use commands like move "a" *.gif to move any gif file starting with an "a". How can I use similar commands like moving gif files that end in "12", "asd" or any other similar variation?

Answer:How to use move command to move specific files?

Yeah, ? is a wildcard for any character.Offhand I'm not sure if, for example, using wildcards for a 5 character file name--?????.jpg--will also respond to file names with less than 5 characters. You may need to experiment with that. I usually use the COPY command rather than MOVE but I think both use the same rules.Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide. Better hurry. They're picking and shipping now.

Probably a stupid question but I would like to ask it anyway. I have an AX1300 triple core desktop which I find the case too small on (heat etc) and would like to utilise a vacant case from a TC105. I know the AX1300 is a smaller form factor motherboard but would there be any issues with power supply in the TC105 case, as in connecting to the AX1300 board or the with actual amount of power supplied by the TC105? Or, would I need to swap the power from the smaller case? Any advice appreciated. See, I told you it was a stupid question ;-)

I realise this is not possible. Thanks

Now another question comes up regarding modifying the cooling of my case/ computer etc.

I was wanting to carve two 3 1/2" holes in the top of my case, for two 12cm fans. Now I know fully how to do this, however, I was wondering which direction the air flow should go. Should the fans blow into my case? (Like I suspect) Or should I have them blow out?

The orange highlights are the fans I wish to add. Which direction should I have the air flow setup?

Answer:Case airflow question before modifying case

I would have them sucking air out. Hot air rises, and the side panel fan will hit the VGA's mb, etc and spread out, also they are right next to the PSU. You wont have any really big difference either in or out , but I would have those two pulling the hot air that manages to make it to the top of the case out. and negative pressure tend to run a bit cooler overall.

I know it comes with 1 80mm in the back. But it looks like I can put in a different fan in the back, and put a 80mm on the side panel.

The question is, what are supported in the back? Measuring the back screw holes I came up with:

back: first set: almost 8 cms.
second: almost 9 cms
3rd and final: almost 11 cms.

It seems a 120 mm fan might be a little big for it ?

Answer:GZ-KXA case.. Am I really limited to a 80mm case fan?

Do you already have the case? it looks like it will fit two fan sizes so on the provision that the 80mm that is installed uses the smaller mountings you could probably put a 120mm in there.

HelloI've recently posted a thread or two concerning case temperatures, cooling, noise etc. I feel that the current case my system is housed in is insufficient for my system spec. So I've been trying to decide which case to invest in. But no matter where I look, there doesn't seem to be any definitive advice/recommendations.I've looked at plenty of different models, with a variety of attributes and price ranges, but I'm still completely unsure as to what to for, as a lot of the time, these reviews aren't current (or not even dated at all). For example, I have read many reviews on the Coolermaster ATC-201, which gets reviewed well, but back in Dec 2001 - so for all I know, this model has been superseded by far better, more affordable models since - but there doesn't seem to be any structure to the case reviews. Therefore, I'm hoping someone out there (that's you) knows of a reliable site/magazine, that lists the best cases on the market at present - perhaps listing them in a top ten table - perhaps split into categories like 'best cooling', 'best noise reduction', 'best looks', 'best price', etc.My personal desire is a case that keeps things cool, has a good airflow/fans, but sounds quiet. Hoped I'd be able to spend about 50-60, but willing to pay 120 for a case thats worth itMany thanks

Okay let me start by saying I am sick of my current pc case. I have an "HP Vectra VL400", and I really want to change the case and get a new one. I have heard about ATX, Micro ATX, yadda yadda yadda. Like I know what any of these mean! All I know is I have this pc and this is how it looks:

As you can see it lays flat on the ground like a vcr. lol. Many moronic friends of mine told me I could'nt change the case on this pc but I than decided to take my pc to a store and let a pro look at it anyway. I told him the exact case I wanted (he is actually selling the case at the same store right now).

This is the case:

He looked at the inside of my "HP Vectra VL400", and examined the back of my pc:

And said the long awaited words I had been waiting to hear. That it was POSSIBLE to change the case to the one I want! He said it can be done but that all I need is one thing. He said I would need some sort of fan for the pc... Umm that's where my questions begin. Here look, I'm going to show you. Examine the following pics of the inside of my pc. And take a good look at the power supply unit and how theres a black thing covering it. He said something about needing to buy a fan to cool the processor or something, for once everything is taken out of my HP and put in the other case. Becau... Read more

Note: Psu to mobo pic 1 and psu to mobo pic 2 are shots of the same thing from different angles.

Is any of this fan stuff needed or are they trying to just rip me off at that store? Maybe I don't need any sort of cooling. do I? Or are they just trying to make some money. because can't my pc just run in the new box without what they were saying to me?

A slight problem I have had for a while now which has recently become more frequent and problematic:

The Windows XP Hardware Insert and Hardware Remove sound effects keep playing, one after the other, at varying speeds and regular intervals, when there is no hardware being inserted or removed!

Furthermore, when this happens it affects the computer adversely, causing it to hang momentarily while the 2 sounds play. This is a particular pain when recording video, as it leaves moments of frozen frames on the file.

I'm having some real issues with my Dell XPS 400 and I'm desperately seeking help. I'm running WinXP Pro and this pc
is only about 16 months old. It has the original factory installed ram (1 gig) , a 320 gig hard drive and the processor is an
Intel ViiV. I have been getting a blue error screen with ***Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check
/ Memory Parity Error - System was halted*** that lasted for a few hours. I had to hold the power button in for several seconds each time
to shut it down. I ran both the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic tests, as well as the Memtest 86 , each several times. The results were always
"no memory errors". I attempted a few times, unsucessfully, using the F11 key to reach the Acronis recovery partition. I booted using my XP
disk but was unable to re-install. Windows would begin to load and then the blue screen with the same error message would occur. Finally,
I was able to access the Acronis recovery manager and restore my pc but on reboot it began to run ChkDsk. Now it keeps rebooting and running
a new disk check over and over and over..........................I have tried to cancel the ChkDsk using the keyboard but it keeps running. I'm at a loss, as to what else,
if anything I can do, (besides ripping my hair out by the roots)

Corruption and blocks appeared and disappeared. The Bluray makes its usual prep sounds it does at every start up. It sits with a blank screen that doesn't even appear to be powered on. The only other indicator is the caps lock key flashes a few times and goes off, then flashes a few times and goes off, repeating this sitting there..What part likely died on this sucker? CPU? Dram? Motherboard? Graphics card? How can I trouble shoot it if it doesn't power on ..While it sits there various LEDs on the keyboard are on as said .. Caps lock flashing.Power LED on. When using WinXP the icon for the above appears in the task bar enabling procedure for safe removal of hardware. This does not appear on my PC running Win98SE and so I have just been unplugging whatever hardware when I need to disconnect. I have not experienced any problems but when I did this today I got various messages up on the screen telling me that it was dangerous to do this as data etc could be lost and in fact, Spybot stopped running because of this. I then noticed I had the Safely Remove/Unplug or Eject Icon on the task bar. Can you advise as to how I can get this displayed on Win98SE whenever I connect an external hardware device please.

Answer:Safely Remove Hardware / Unplug or Eject Hardware

The safely remove function is part of XP and cannot be installed on 98 i'm afraid. Its designed to prevent corruption on any sort of USB hard drive (hard drives, usb memory sticks, digi cameras etc) and i would highly recommend using it to prevent data corruption. In 98 you'll have to turn off the PC to safely remove such devices. Annoying but these sorts of devices weren't as prevailent when 98 came out so the function wasn't dreamt up till later...

Let me put this way: I have a medium-ranged machine that can support pretty much all major applications and games out there ( With the exception of those high-end games that have recently released ) However, for some unknown reason, there have been games in wich i have had a few issues. Here's what's constantly happening:

1- Whenever i look at more graphically detailed areas in certain games, the entire response time slows down. The game runs slow basically. And of course, if i move my mouse to areas that are not as detailed, it all responds flawlessly during those few seconds.

2- And now for the strangest part. Whenever i'm in servers with alot of people, the issues mentioned above tend to happen very frequently, and of course, when i'm in servers with 2-6 people or so, the issues mentioned above never happen.

I have no idea why this has been happening. I Cleaned my computer properly. I do virus checks every now and then. I have recently de-fraged my Hard Drive. I Clean up cookies, temporary files, etc.

Here's what i think: It most certainly isn't the graphics card's problem, as even when i put my settings (in games) all on the lowest ones possible.( this includes resolution ) I still have the issues mentioned above. But that's just a guess...

I'm not sure what could be doing this.. CPU maybe? The fact that my Computer's drive is nearly at it's maxed capacity? I tend to install alot of things.. could a nearly fille... Read more

I have a Dell dimension 2400 with Windows XP service pack 2. Now at boot-up I get a hardware wiazard attempting to install drivers for unknown hardware. I lauch the wizard and it finds nothing. I insert my Canon cd with drivers and it still finds nothing. Under Printers my printer is on lpt1, online and the default printer. Under device manager it shows 4 unknown devices in yellow with yellow ? marks.

I have disabled and deleted these and they comeback each time the hardware wizard runs. The com1 and ecp printer 1 devices all show that they are working properly. I have deleted and attempted to reinstall software drivers . The installation process halts when the system attempts to ping the printer and determines that there is no connection between the desktop and the printer. I have rebooted the system and printer. I have checked the cable.

Answer:Hardware Wizard Wants To Setup Unknown Hardware

You might want to look at the Device Manager to see what type of device it is listed under. To access this follow these instructions:

Right Click MY COMPUTER
Select PROPERTIES
Click HARDWARE tab
Select DEVICE MANAGER
See what the Device Manager recognizes the device as.
Go to Dell.com and seach up the drivers for your computer.
If nothing else works, try installing all the drivers, Windows will tell you if the driver will work or not. Good luck and post results plz.

Hi everybody :

I've been looking at some hardware for my computer...as spare parts. I need some advice. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard, that uses an Intel Core i3 processor LGA 1155 , Corsair 2Gb (takes two chips) DDR3 PC10600 1333Mhz. I purchased all this around the same time.....July 2013. The computer is still functioning okay (a few "bumps" here and there). Usually, under, at least, fair conditions, how long SHOULD the memory last? Before it goes bad ? And the same question for the processor ? I'd like to be able to get some spare parts, just in case. In a last case scenario, I would probably have to do it all over again.......the MOBO, Processor and memory.
garystan

Answer:Computer Hardware [moved to Hardware>Building]

RAM and Processors don't wear out or fail due to time. RAM can fail for many reasons but if it is currently functioning there's no reason it won't continue to run forever. Things that could kill ram are failing power supply, voltage issues on the motherboard, power surges, static charges, etc. Processors are even more resilient. If the processor is run withing specified parameters it will run forever.

It's much more likely for a hard drive to fail. Motherboards can fail for many of the same reasons that RAM can fail. In all my time building and using computers, I've never had RAM fail or a CPU fail but I have had motherboards or components of the board fail and certainly hard drives have failed.

guys does the hardware needed for networking :
NIC's and router.

do the job of connecting to the internet also?
if not what other hardware is needed cause i wanna network(2 pc's) and use internet .

Answer:Network hardware does the job for internet hardware?

You need an ISP (Internet Service Provider), and a link to your site. How the ISP provides the connection is determined by what kind of service you have, probably a broadband modem of some sort. If you already have broadband Internet, you have equipment to connect to the Internet.

Please tell us make/model of any existing equipment, and we'll go from there.

Hello, after I rebooted my computer, something odd happened; Windows said that new hardware was found when I didn't do anything to the computer.
I can't install drivers for this thing because I have no idea what it is. Looking at the device manager, I see that it says its listed as

PCI Input Device

amd the properties for it states:

PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 2, device 2, function 1)

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

The Device Manager also has another device listed as an error, the 1394 port of my Sound Blaster Audigy Card.

The properties of the 1394 Net Adapter states:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

This device used to be working perfectly before the new PCI Input Device was found, and oddly its name has changed. It used to be called "1394 Net Adapter", but now its name is "1394 Net Adapter #2" as if I took out the old one and added a new one.

Does anyone know what is going on? I haven't done anything to this computer and now these problems show up.

Thanks
Hank

ok the specs of the machine are

AMD athlon xp 2100+ mb is a gigabyte 7vt600-rz
2 512mb ram in the last 2 slots
500 watt psu
a maxtor 40 gig hdd
a cdrw lite on, and a cdrom.

only the floppy cdrom and hard drive are hooked up all on there own cable with only one device on each.

the cdrw is failing to read disks at the moment although it worked earlier today.

ok the problem comes in when I try to fdisk the drive I have jumpered it to master and cable select. both only let me see 2gigs of the 40gig drive to fdisk if I say I dont want the maximum it says it has 8gigs but I can only fdisk 2gigs though there are no other partitions the first time I fdisked it showed all 40gigs but since then it only shows 8 or 2 depending on what I am doing atm the hdd has the dos system files on so it can boot but that is all any suggestions would be great Derrick

I am attempting to move folders and files around, doing a little organization on my HDD. However if I attempt to move the loaded folder I get the error message " The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." However I have no other programs open, thinking it was some hidden process, I killed a bunch of processes in Task Manager, one's I didn't recognize, or I knew were safe to kill.

Not sure if this may be an issue, but my mobo recently went belly up and I had to replace it (with the same type DP67DB for DP67DB) but everything else remained as is- this is the first time I am messing with the files on the "new" machine. Is it possibly an ownership issue, and if so how do I resolve this?

Answer:Can't move folders with files, but can move files

Hello.

On occasion, over the past 5 days my Windows 2000-Win2k machine has had some wierd output on the screen when it boots up. It looks like bad Satelight reception. This happens before Win2k boots up so I know it is not a OS thing (also because I did a system wipe).

The only other time this happend to me was when I got my Win98 machine and had to send it back. The Win98 box had a intergrated AGP (built into motherboard) card so I had to send the entire thing! I tried my screen on my Win98 machine with the monitor and it works fine every time.

My system is new. The parts were sitting around for a long while, but they we not removed from the boxes (a few times, but that was over 4 months ago).

What could be the possible problem(s)? I don't have much money to work with so what should I do?

Help.

TY

Answer:Possible hardware failure-screen?mobo?-videocard?-Help please+hardware failure?!

You might try re-seating your video card. AGP cards tend to be a bit tricky; even a small point of non-contact can create havoc. If you have access to another video card, you can try swapping video cards and see if the problem goes away. I suppose cable connections are also a possibility, although I have never seen the symptoms you describe with a loose cable.

Are you able to boot into Windoze (sorry, I couldn't tell for sure from your post)? If so, any video-related problems there?

Hope this helps.

Since recently acquiring my new(er) computer I have had a "safely remove hardware" icon in the task tray that I cannot remove or get to operate successfully.

I have attached screen capture shots of the windows that appear when I attempt to remove this "hardware" and the icon. The upshot of the problem is that whenever I've attempted to "stop" the hardware I always get a message saying, "The ****device cannot be stopped now. Try stopping the device again later. The device, which you can see in the attached screen shots, is described as "generic volume", with what appears to be some form of identification number.

If anyone can tell me what this little rascal is and/or how I can remove it and the icon from the taskbar I'd appreciate it.

P.S. - I've newly learned that this "device" with it's icon in the system tray is the hard drive (by comparing the associated ID # indicated in the "properties" window with the hard drive # in the device manager window). I certainly don't want to remove the hard drive, but does anyone know why an icon for this device would appear in the taskbar, or know how to remove the icon only?

I was sitting idle on Saturday evening and this thought came in my mind. In what ways PC hardware is different from MAC?

I am aware that Apple makes their software compatible with their hardware and they mostly use other companies hardware in their machines. Then, what is the reason why Mac is soooo expensive as compared to Windows? also, how MAC is able to provide such an amazing OS?

Answer:In what way mac hardware differs from PC hardware?

The base system of an Apple computer is the same basic system as a PC, and since they stopoped using Motorola CPUs and started using Intel platforms there is practically no difference in the hardware.

Amazingly (to folks like me) their newest systems are consistently older in terms of hardware (CPU) platform.

They get a (significant) premium for their brand. People are willing to fork over almost double the money to obtain the real (and somewhat perceived) benefit of a problem and (relatively) maintenance free system.
Apple computers achieve their stability because they are a closed system. You cannot (easily) modify the system or the "BIOS", and the operating system is designed only to run in that strict environment. There is not an awful lot you can do to tweak and reconfigure an Apple OS. If someone hasn't written an Apple approved program to do what you want then you just can't do it.

PC's by design are highly user configurable. The Windows operating system is also extremely configurable, being capable of running on thousands of different PC hardware configurations, running thousands of different specialized, independently produced programs, etc. This complexity and configurability comes at a price: more user maintenance and knowledge needed.

People are willing to pay a lot more to avoid doing any work, or to have to learn anything about computers. Windows has always been the SUV of computer systems. Mac has always been more like a 2-seater sports car.

Ok, It all started when I installed a copy of windows 98se. I formated my HD and proceded to install my pirated win98se. (:/ this is what I get for pirating} So when I started setup it all came up in japanese, ok I'll just download a language pack and that should fix, so I kept going witht he install.

After everything was finished I rebooted and windows kept ****ing up, the screen would start flickering and then just froze. I had to press artl+crtl+del right before it did that to get past it. Then I rebooted my computer and everything just started going so damn slowwwww. So I just figured a I'd format again and leave it alone. It took 45mins to format this 3gig HD. I went and got another HD and booted up with that and it took 3mins to boot up. So I ruled out the HD so maybe it was ram, I found some ram (one 64mb stick) It wasn't the ram. i can't think of anything, I've never had a problem like this before. If anyone can help or solve my problem thanks a lot.

P.S The HD I installed this jap ver of 98se won't register when I plug it up.

So I stuck this 4xUSB card in my PCI slot, and since on both operating systems vista and xp (the computer is dual boot) "found new hardware" continually pops up. So I go into device manager and here's what I get:

Note that the rest of that device manager is taken up by the mystery 100 devices (look at the size of the scrollbar ).

Good morning!

This time last year, my father and I built a computer for him. It was to the nines - his version of a midlife crisis, I think... not the best of the best, but he didn't cut corners due to cost.

Part of that process was a 64-bit proc, etc, but we went with the 32-bit version of xp pro. He is now asking about moving up to 64-bit... I have not made the transition myself, so I don't know what to tell him about the pros and cons... I'm sure there's a sticky on this, but I didn't find it.

Could you advise?

Thanks!

Answer:To move or not to move to 64-bit?

Hi agcereniv !

If you only use regular apps then you won't see any difference between XP 64 and the 32bit version. If there are some apps that can take advantage of the added features then go ahead but you'll need 64bit versions of the drivers for all your hardware (and they can be a pain to find) and some older programs may not work properly. For the Home user there's no point going to XP 64 yet.

Read this for more informations :
http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/...4_preview2.asp

Here are the minimum requirements for XP 64bit :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/6...ts/sysreq.mspx

One of the argued advantages of going 64bit (be it XP or Vista) is that it allows the OS to use more than 4GB of memory. Actually there are very few apps that can use more than 2GB of RAM so the benefits will only show with apps that were designed to run on a 64bit OS. You'll find more information in these threads :
