Mouse will work for one minute

Question: Mouse will work for one minute

I have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions for my mouse problems but nothing has worked. My mouse will work for one to two minutes, then quit. If I unplug it and try another USB port, it will work for another minute or two, then quit again. Has anyone ever encountered this problem? Thanks for any suggestions!

Preferred Solution: Mouse will work for one minute

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My mouse goes to sleep consistently at the one minute mark after sitting idle. It is revived with a simple click of the button. This has been this way for 3 months but is becoming a pain and I want to solve it.

I have Windows vista, home premium on a PC using an older MS wireless keyboard and mouse. version 1.0A. I checked to update drivers and put in fresh batteries. All MS updates have been made and the computer is up to date.

The mouse/keyboard transmitter is about 4 ft from the PC and in trying to solve this problem, it has been moved to several positions. The usb connection has been tried in 3 different slots on the back of the PC.

I have checked all the settings for the mouse in the control panel but see no reference to make the mouse go into a sleep state (or out of it). Suggestions?

I would assume this is normal though.

The problem of mouse freeze ups first started 1-2 months ago. And back then the screen would actually freeze up where only unplugging power to the computer would allow me to shut it down and start over. I was getting several of those a day. I don't recall exactly what cleared up that problem but the hard lock ups went away. I did initiate some earlier "restore" points at that time. But the more common 1-2 sec mouse freezes have lingered. At first I thought it was from dirt on the optical lens because cleaning it or blowing on it would often provide relief for hours. When I experienced numerous BSOD's two weeks ago a bad memory stick resolved that problem...and along with the mouse hang ups went entirely away for several days, the first time that's happened in months. But the problem eventually returned over the past 2 days. At first only a couple of times per day, now up to several times per minute. I can flip the mouse over at times and see that the optical sensor light is not lit for a brief period. I can yank on the mouse wire and make the light go off.

I was planning to get a new mouse but after having no issues for most of a week I figured it wasn't a simple hardware issue. My computer is an 18 month old Dell Inspiron 560 with nothing fancy, no add ons, etc. All I really use it for is to surf the web (no gaming, no heavy duty spreadsheets or office work, etc.). The drivers used are whatever came with it new. The only programs I've loaded since delivery are A... Read more

My computer keeps freezing, I can't move the mouse, and nothing moves on the screen. this lasts for maybe a minute, not too long, and then a box pops up saying:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://vsitoolbar/content/vsiUtils.js:1943

what is this and is there a way to stop it? Somtimes the page that has the pop up is not the one I am currently on, and so I have to navigate away from what I am doing to get rid of the box.

lately I have had the CPU usage box minimized in my taskbar, and I noticed that it did not move either.

I hope this is enough information, if not let me know and I'll try to find out what I can.

Symptoms: the most obvious is the mouse and keyboard freezes (but still accepts entries into the buffer) for roughly 10 seconds at a time, maybe twice per minute. It takes a good 5 minutes just to power up, but at least it's faster since I ran autoruns and unclicked unneeded items. Usesd to be more like 10 minutes from power on to actually being able to talk to my computer! Really a drag. It's a Dell XPS M140 laptop, w/ 2GB memory and XPhome SP3, 80GB HDD with 28GBB still free. On attempt to defrag, the computer looks and says I don't need to, so I haven't actually defrag'd it. It recently had a bad DNSchanger Trojan infection, solved on BC in the malware forum. What I've done...After running OTC and MBA and Kaspersky and McAfee VSE to get the trojan DNS changers (4 entries) off my machine, guided by Kahdah at the malware forum of BC, it seems to be clean. I've rerun MBA a few times since that topic was closed, and the scans still are clean. I can once again go to Windows Updates, MalwareBytes, and other sites which the DNS changer had forbidden while infected. So, I've...- gotten the latest updates installed from Windows Update- installed the latest version and DAT of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i and run it- run autoruns and unchecked things not necessary.- run CCleaner and backup'd registry and cleaned up registry errors, and cleaned 140Meg of temp files- accessed systems/accessories defrag but it said I didn't need to defrag ... Answer:mouse, keyboard freezes ~twice per minute

Hi ricknorth -You can still run defrag if you like (just to be sure) - It never hurts (how much is fragmented, it will be shown) -I would run a Check Disk scan now, to also clean up any minor problems remaining - You just copy and paste the code below into Run Box, close all open programs including internet, and the computer will reboot 30 seconds after you click OK -CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30Please let the check/repair program run, it will take 30 to 45 mins on average - You can also use TFC to clean up Temp Files if needed-Download TFC to your desktop.Close any open windows.Double click the TFC icon to run the programTFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,Click the Start button to begin the process.Allow TFC to run uninterrupted. The program should not take long to finish it's jobOnce its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete cleanThank You -

Hi,

This is a strange one....

Whenever I boot my system, it makes it to the login screen in about 15 seconds. Then stays there frozen for about a minute before I can type in my password. The problem is due to the mouse and keyboard not working, they do eventually work if i wait long enough. The mouse is wired USB and the keyboard wireless USB.

Now where it gets weird is that the mouse and keyboard work if i hot del to go to bios setup. So they are getting power, it just that when it gets the login screen something kills all the usb ports and then bring them back on-line.

When i first installed 8.1 the delay before the keyboard worked was about 15 seconds. now it's about 1 minute.

I'm booting of an SSD with the latest i7. So speed should not be an issue.

I examined startup services, and did not see anything that should not be there.

Not sure what to do next.

BY the way, once it does boot and I'm logged in, everything works as it should.

Nick

Answer:Windows 8.1 no mouse/keyb at login for 1 minute then ok

Your answer is in your post, as you use your computer, eventually other things get added to your STARTUP. That time when you can't do anything is when Windows is booting the Drivers for your Wired Mouse and Wireless KB - Also, Sometimes a Wireless KB needs have you press the "connect" button.

If you added any new items to Startup, and you may not be aware of what has been added, you can always go in and disable the items and the "frozen" time should go back down to 15 seconds.

Look for things like Skype, Onenote, Bing Desktop, or any Messenger Apps - These can all be shut off. Leave anything else that is related to your KB and Mouse, oir if you have any server software that runs at boot- Like the server for any Remote iPhone or Droid apps.

OS crash and/or mouse/keyboard freeze - always within first few minutes of startup.  I'm just not getting anywhere with working this out and I've been fighting it about eight weeks now.
I bought a Dell Studio XPS 9100 in July 2011. It has always performed perfectly. Paid version of Malwarebytes and paid version of Avast Internet Security; always fully updated and always returning full system scans as clean, no issues.  Windows 7 is kept fully updated.
I use Firefox except when f...ed into having to use IE Explorer when required (like banks, Verizon Wireless, et al).
Over the last eight weeks or so I have been having crash issues in the first minutes after startup. Every crash has happened in the first 5 - 10 minutes of startup. If it get past that, I'm good to go all day and half the night.
I'm having two 'types' of crashes. Sometimes I can startup, start working, and then the monitors (two) 'scramble' and the mouse / keyboard are completely freeze up. I can do nothing but a hard shutdown. Grrr.
The other times (about half), the mouse / keyboard will simply freeze - either before getting started; i.e., unable to even enter my user password; or very very shortly after getting logged in; barely able to open a few programs (Firefox, Word, Excel, Outlook . . .)
I have found that if I put the computer to sleep at the end of the day, there will be no mouse / keyboard freeze or crash - but how long do I want to only put the computer to sleep? Surely not for days or weeks o... Read more

My mouse takes a full minute to be usable after boot. the first time this happened I did a system restore and it fixed it. It came back, I did another restore, it came back again I did it 3 more times like this. I am current on all updates. I am running a asus px658d-e board. All the drivers are up to date. I am running the most recent bios, I am using a usb keyboard and mouse. I have tried booting with the mouse in each usb port with no improvement. I deleted the mouse in the device manager and rebooted. it reinstalled the driver and the problem did not improve. I am running win 7 pro 64bit. any ideas

thanks

Answer:mouse takes 1 minute to start after boot

Hello cixus. Welcome to the Forum.

Sounds like a failing mouse. You should do some tests.

Can you test it on another computer?
Can you borrow another known working mouse and try it on your computer?
Do other USB devices work OK?

You do not need to load the mouse drivers to test the mice. The generic drivers will do fine.

Hi everybody,

After searching on the internet and doing some disk assignment tweaks, i still can't find a solution for my problem.

My w10 was running fine every day when all of a sudden my pc got really slow. When clicking on the start menu it sometimes doesnt load and a reboot/shut down takes 5 minutes before something happens. Also loading the file explorer takes forever and when finished loading it won't show examples of files like jpg's and png's.

I guess it is a problem with w10 because the ssd where my w10 is installed is only 2 months old. Do you guys have any solution? I need my pc for work, so i'm really trying to find a solution.

Answer:W10 too slow to work with after a minute of 5

run this few things from Command prompt (As Administrator) first:
sfc /scannow
and
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
To make sure there's no system corruption.
At disk properties, under tools , you'll find Error checking > Check, that should check file integrity.
Did you run any AV checks maybe and Malwarebytes too ?

So I run a p4 3.0, 896 ram and 512 kbps dsl windows xp

I live in greece so I use OTE as my ISP with a speedtouch modem.

My problem is, my internet will work for a few pages when I first open the browser and then when I try to open a new page (that im sure exists) it just pretends like its trying to open it but just sitting there using none of the network speed. (im sure this is the case as I've turned off everthing else including my anti-virus and whanot to test this)

the weird thing is that when i copy link location, close all instances of the browser, reopen the browser and paste the link that wasnt working just a moment ago. it works? It's some weird connection between my browser or ISP and the internet.

please please please someone know what to do!

Answer:browser has to be reopened to work after a minute or so

Well i think that you coulds try installing the drivers for the moderm or repair them. You could also try and download internet explorer and when the installtion wizards starts you should try repair, this should repair any erros or missing files, or if you still have the windows xp disc, you should try and install it again, this should also fix any errors and missing files BUT IF YOU DO THAT REMEMEBER TO BACK-UP TOUR FILES BECAUSE THEY WILL BE LOST AND YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TO INSTALL ALL YOUR PROGRAMS BACK ON

hope this helps, please reply gd luck

When I turn on the computer about twenty minutes is quiet. Than fan starts like a hurricane, slows down and stops. It lasts few seconds. The fan works in this way regularly with one minute intervals.
Is there any possibility to switch the fan on continuous work in slow motion?

Answer:Satellite L20-182: fan doesn't work properly - one minute intervals

Hi,

If you go to toshiba power saver you should be able to turn your up or down. Once you open this program from control panel, you have the option to change how much your processor runs as well as how much your cooling modules work. Turning either one down will make the fan not come on as much. Then you might want to try and use a vacuum cleaner to suck the air intake grills to clean any dust that could be clogging it up. Dust can make the fan run more because the lack of cool, fresh air entering the system to cool the cpu. Hope this helps.

Hello all. I have an X220 with 6201, latest drivers downloaded from the Lenovo site. Whenever I sleep or hibernate, when I resume computer (on Win7) I get either a litte red x or a little glowing orb on my wireless connection, which indicates "Wireless not connected - Connections are available".  But I can't connect for up to a minute!! If I leave it alone it will connect on its own. What is going on, this is really becoming a problem!

Answer:X220 wireless doesn't work for up to a minute when resuming from sleep or hibernate

If you can't afford to wait a minute of so to reconnect, then use Fn+F5 to turn off all wireless devices before you hibernate and use it again to to switch them back on when you power up again.

Cheers,

Thanks in advance for your help. It appears I have randomly picked up a virus of some sort wherein whenever I am connected to the internet, my computer gives the "Windows Has Recovered From a Critical Error and Will Restart in One Minute. I can turn the internet off via a switch on my netbook (it is a HP Mini 110-1100 with Windows 7 Starter), and when I have that turned off before I log in, the computer works as normal, but of course the internet is a much-needed tool. [Sirefef virus]Hi all.It looks like I've picked up a virus while browsing the internet (Drive-by infection). The computer was operating OK except last night I heard it playing a video talking about meryl streep (through the speakers) but there was no window open (a bit sus). Then when I checked this morning, I saw that System Centre essentials, Windows update, Firewall and whatever Windows Defender is now called have all been disabled (computer still functioning OK though...).I then tried to reinstall System Centre Essentials and now get a message every time I boot the computer saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work Now". This happens in Normal and Safe Mode.I'm not running a CD Drive emulator, and I'd love some suggestions on how to tackle this given my 1 minute window of opportunity when the computer boots. Thanks![Edit] Just tried rebooting my PC this morning, it looks like I have picked up the sirefef virus (or a variant) - the latest definitions from MSE picked it up. It's still doing the reboot every minute trick though, and the files keep reappearing after i "Clean" them.[Edit #2] I have used Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk/) to locate the original version of Services.exe in the winsxs folder and copy it back to the c:\windows\system32\ folder (after renaming the one sirefef put there) could have... The internet comes and goes. I'll have pages load instantly for a minute or so and then the next click the pages times out. A minute of page refreshing and more time outs and then I'm back to blazing speeds again. This repeats again and again. Restarting the computer, cable modem and router seems to make no difference. I've tried IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari, and again, no difference. I have 4 computers on my home network. This happens on all of them but for the sake of troubleshooting this I have physically disconnected 3 of them from the network. I've reset and reconfigured the router. I've removed the router and connected straight to the modem. No problems. Blazing connection. Added the router back in the loop, reboot and problem occurs immediately. So router problem, right? I got an optical mouse with a scroll wheel for Christmas last year and the scroll wheel won't work on anything (IE, Compuserve, Netscape).
It has no brand name anywhere on the mouse so I can't look for a new driver. It came from Office Depot and it has no disk/CD. When I plugged it in it did not load anything else and I tried Add/Remove Hardware, but it didn't find anything new. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks,

Hello NeokharkThanks for using the Lenovo forums. It looks like that the newest windows update has not yet been tested for your unit, as per the following post:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht503655

I would recommend that you revert back to the old windows version before the update, and wait for Lenovo to confirm if you can update to the latest update for your unit.

Hi, I am using the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series.
I"ve recently encountered a very strange bug. Whenever I turn on my computer, whether from hibernation, shutdown my mouse doesn't work properly.
What happens is this, I'll go to open anything (Firefox, word, excel etc) and suddenly my mouse cursor would jump to another part of the screen. And suddenly, except for that one program that I have opened, i can no longer left/right click anywhere else. sometimes while moving, I would even end up dragging my menu bar and dock it somewhere else on the screen.
I thought it was the mouse, but I bought a brand new out of the box and that one does it too. i uninstalled the trackpad driver, and unplugged the mouse and use the trackpad and it still does it.
I cannot even use the trackpad, because of this issue because it won't recognize my trying to middle click. I can post a video of it later if you like to show yall what's going on.

My Warrenty is almost up and I want to see *** is going on. ty

All clicks are inactive. right clicking, left clicking and even when you leave the mouse over the start button or any folder for a description it doesn't work.

I currently am running Windows XP Home Edition. I have to run in system recovery mode (safemode but you are still running the OS). It is very hard to because nothing runs on startup in recovery mode so I am very limited because my spyware protection does not work.

If you can help me please do.

Thank you!

Answer:Mouse clicking doesn't work only moviong around the mouse

You have told us absolutely nothing about your system so all I can answer with is do XP Repair:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
If you do not have a Windows XP cd, then you will need to buy one. Or use system restore disk to wipe out drive and return to clean and new as once was....those are the only options for what you have told us or if you have a ps2 mouse try a usb mouse, but I still think your system must be totally corrupted and need the XP repair bare minimum.

My mouse wheel doesn't work in IE 6.0 (on WinXP) unless the mouse cursor is actually over the window. When the mouse is over the window, it scrolls normally, but when it's off (even if IE is still the active application), it doesn't scroll. My mouse wheel scrolls other programs even if the mouse cursor isn't actually over the window (like Word), so why doesn't it work for IE? Any way to turn this on? I don't have anything like X-Active turned on or anything like that. It's not a serious problem, but it is kind of annoying, so if anyone knows the answer, please let me know, thanks.

Answer:Mouse wheel doesn't work in IE unless mouse is over the window

I don't know the reason why, but I believe it's normal. My mouse wheel also only works when in IE if the cursor is over the window.

Hi,

I have started getting problems with Mouse & Mouse pad on a Satellite M30X. Clicking on Icons on the desktop gives erratic results like wrong application starting etc and not responding. The OS has been reinstalled with a new hard drive and the BIOS updated to no avail.

Looks like maybe the motherboard has anybody seen this....and have the solution.

Cheers Scottie

Answer:Mouse Pad/Mouse does not work properly on my Satellite M30X

Hi there,

did you tried it with some external mouse/keyboard? If not already did then try it and check what?s happening. In both cases I would suggest you to contact a local servicepartner for a hardwarecheckup, because your issue sounds serious and cannot be resolved with some software-things or DIY tricks.

Here?s a link to find the nearest servicepartner in your country:

Would be better to let some technicians do their job ;)

I have been using computers for over 25 years now, and I have never run across a problem like this. Backstory: I built my current PC about a year ago. Everything worked perfectly until about 5 days ago. At that point, it needed to restart. I restarted it, and upon boot neither the mouse or keyboard would respond. I tried a different mouse and keyboard, they did not work either. I tried both of the mice and keyboards with another PC, and they worked fine. This absolutely rules out the problem being the inputs. Then, I noticed that the mouse and keyboard do work in BIOS. However, after exiting BIOS and booting, they stop responding altogether. I have gone into system recovery countless times and tried literally every recovery option listed, to no avail. Any suggestions to help would be GREATLY appreciated. For the past 5 days I have literally had a $3000 paperweight.

Answer:Mouse/Keyboard work in BIOS, they do not work once computer boots

Hi JamesKBoyd. Welcome to the Tenforums @JamesKBoyd

Any chance you can boot to Advance Startup menu and invoke System restore (assuming your inputs work in this mode.)

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

To get this process started you need two failed start ups. Power on, see spinning dots, hold power key until machine powers off. Repeat. On third start up Windows will detect the two failed attempts and start the menu.

I assume when you boot all other USB devices are disconnected (not that you should have to do this normally but while testing).

You will want to look into installing and using a tool like Macrium Reflect, free, reliable and very handy in situations like this.

Alright guys, Windows update has been really messing with my pc lately. I ran update and when it installed the updates my integrated mouse ended up not working. I rolled back update and installed the updates one by one and the one I ended up not installing was the camera codec pack. Now the problem I am having is that my touchscreen won't work. If I talk to HP support they do the most basic thing they can and then when they can't fix it they tell me that I have to ship it to them because hardware is broken. (obviously not the case because uninstalling an update fixed my problem.) If you guys know what update is at fault or if you know how to diagnose the problem I would be grateful.

Thank you.

Answer:Mouse won't work now touchscreen won't work. Windows updat

There's no shortcut I know of. It's a matter of roll it back so the system works normally. Install the next update in the list. Test. Repeat.

Until you find the culprit.

It may be a good idea to write down the updates on a pad of paper as you install them. Over time it's easy to lose your place in the list. Especially with rebooting etc..

Hi,

All of a sudden I'm having a very strange problem.

I have a G510 Keyboard and a Razer Mamba mouse which all of a sudden dont seem to be found by windows. They work just find in the BIOS and start up, but as soon as it goes into W7 they dont work at all. They are turned on and everything, but nothing is recognized.

I have them connected via USB to the M/B and they were working just fine last time I had used them.

I already attempted safe mode boot, safe mode with command prompt and a CMOS clean with no luck.

Anyone come across this before?

PS: Already tried another mouse and keyboard and they werent being picked up either. As a matter fact, its not recognizing anything plugged via USB.

Answer:Mouse and Keyboard dont work in W7, but work in BIOS

Since your USB connections aren't working properly do you have or can you find a mouse or keyboard that plugs into the PS2 port on the computer? Assuming you have a PS2 port on the computer.

Hello, my computer has for a while had regular problems with BSOD's on a regular basis. I have put up with it and i just restart my pc when it happens because i have no idea what the problem is. Due to me not being able to post my BSOD dumps, i gave up and just put up with it. This was all and well until yesterday. Yesterday my computer had the courtesy of BSODing me and forcing me to go into safemode and after this my mouse stopped working. The light on the mouse works, the drivers seem okey in the device manager and it actually shows up in the device manager. But it will not work. I have been so pissed of with this because i can not see any solution, i cant afford a repair man to fix my pc. So I was hoping you guys could help me with some possible solutions?

Answer:Mouse drivers work but dont work

This is a long shot, but may work. Turn off your computer. Unplug all your USB devices, except your keyboard and mouse if they are USB.Turn on the computer and let it boot normally. If everything works and you don't any BSOD's, then you may have too small of a power supply.I just had to get rid of a LifeCam 3000 for this reason. Got a bigger P/S and all seems well. But sometimes too many USB devices can cause IRQ conflicts and you'll have to unplug the least used of the USB devices until they are needed.Chuck Norris was once asked why he doesn't use an iPhone, he responded, "Same reason I don't use tampons."

So i bought a new USB Mouse because my PS/2 one is kinda broken with the left click, though i've searched for the problem and found out that it was the switch in the mouse, but i didn't feel like opening my PS/2 mouse and trying to fix it. So i bought a cheap USB Mouse. Now i've plugged it in, and when i plugged it out, the PS/2 mouse wasn't working. I still need to use the PS/2 mouse for playing games because it feels more comfortable, and i'm much more used to it. I tried restarting the pc then plugging in the PS/2 mouse, but it's not working. Any suggestions? Basically, i want a PS/2 mouse and a USB mouse to run at the same time.

hey guys,  I'm running into a problem with my mouse.  It seems that even when it is plugged in, and my computer makes the sound indicating it has recognized the usb device, and even when the mouse itself is all lit up, it still won't work.  I even bought a new one, and that one won't work either.  I can only use the touchpad.  I'm running a HP Envy dv7 notebook pc with windows 8.  Other usb stuff works fine, it's just these mice.

Hello brentonoho.  I understand you're having some trouble with your mouse.I want you to check and see how the computer is detecting the mouse after you're plugging it in.  This would be best accomplished through the Device Manger.  Here are the steps.Navigate to your Device Manager.Expand the "Mice and other pointing devices" section. If the mouse is listed here double click on it and let me know if it is giving out any errors.Have a great day!  I'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Hi,

What type of motherboard do you have and do you happen to check the specifications particularly with its onboard USB ports. Just thinking maybe you got USB 3.0 at the back and you're mouse is not compatible with it.

Now first off whoever can help me please remember that although I use a computer, the easiest way for me to follow dirctions on here is by being told where to find things, so if you can help me solve my problem please show me how, don't tell me. Here is the problem:

I had a virus on my computer that would not allow me to turn my computer on. My brother reformatted my computer. I have windows XP. My computer works now, but the mouse does not. It is plugged into the USB port. The curser for the mouse just sits in the middle of the screen. I tried using all 6 USB ports on my computer and it still does not work. I searched for mouse drivers and nothing came up. I used the Help section in Windows and the screen where the mouse software is supposed to be is blank. I tried installing the disk that came with the mouse but my computer states that it is not compatable with my system (It worked fine before the reformat). I also tried 2 other mice and neither of them worked. I have a logitech mouse with the big red ball in it. Please help me someone.

@DrPam?, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them. This is a USB wired mouse.  Therefore, it doesn't require batteries.  Have you tried plugging it into all of the USB ports on the comuter?

Answer:Mouse does not work.

Try:

To reset that password....

Otherwise, I'd say take the battery out of the motherboard for 30 mins then put it back in. This method will reset everything within the bios........

I've been working on my brother's computer. He's had quite a few issues with XP but nothing like this. As of a few days ago, the mouse simply does not work. It is a USB mouse with a PS/2 adapter. Our first instinct was to try and run it as a USB mouse - no go. I even bought a new mouse to try out (another USB mouse) and that did not work. After trying a third mouse to no avail, we decided it's not the mouse itself but the computer and/or operating system.

The other USB ports work so I do not think it is the USB ports. It may be the PS/2 port but I'm not sure. I was able to maneuver XP with the keyboard and open Device Manager - there was no listing for "mouse", only keyboard. I even went to "view" to display the hidden devices. Nothing. So now, the computer seems to not even acknowledge the ability to use a mouse. He hasn't messed with any of the devices or their drivers/configurations, so I don't think it is his fault.

So where do I go from here? I cannot get system restore to work properly in normal or safe mode. The mouse works for all of 2 seconds after restarting during a system restore attempt but immediately does not work again.

Any ideas? I'd appreciate any input at this point. Thank you.

Hi Chris, I've worked with two other people in the last 2 weeks on this exact issue. Its happening to 1000s of people out there and as best I have been able to determine its being caused by an automatic update. Once youve read through those entirely, let me know and I will work with you to try to resolve this issue. I will be around all day today.

Hi all, hope someone can help. Here goes. I have a Dell DM051 that I was using a Belkin KVM switch on. I removed the switch and connected everything back to the computer and everything appears to work fine except the mouse. When the computer starts up and gets to the windows XP log on screen, I cannot move the pointer over to my icon to select my user so that I can enter my password and continue. So, there I sit, on that blue XP log on screen, looking at the pointer that I can't move, beside the icon that I cannot select to continue. Any ideas?? And while I do appreciate all help, please don't ask if the mouse is connected or stuff like that. I've tried several ideas from diffrent mouses to removing jumpers and batteries, etc. What I need is good advice from someone who knows computers. Thanks in advance, Phil

Hi there, first time poster. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400, purchased in March of this year. My OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bit. When I purchased my laptop, I also bought a PC Line optical mouse from PC World, model no. PCL-WIO1.At first it worked fine. Auto-installed, worked perfect for months.Recently however it's started acting up. It won't work in some of my USB ports, and the one('s) in which it does work the connection is unstable and prone to cutting out altogether if the laptop is moved.I've updated the driver via the device manager and still the problem persists.Furthermore, I recently purchased another PC Line mouse in Dixons, thinking my current mouse was damaged, and it doesn't even install. Apparantly the driver is located but an error occurs due to a Win95 INF or something. The kicker is that when I returned the mouse to Dixons and they tried it on one of their display machines, it worked instantly.I would have thought that the problem lies with my USB connections, but I have tested my iPod and Xbox 360 controller wireless receiver in all 4 ports, and both devices work fine, no problems. It's only with mice that I'm hitting a brick wall.Anyone have any advice/suggestions/solutions/remedies for me?

Answer:Mouse won't work! :(

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum. Here you may receive several replies that will give you various options, take heed and try the options posted.Ok,i have this feeling it could be a Microsoft update issue.Firstly you could try system restore taking the system back to before the problem arose.Im limited to what advice to give at the moment as im on an xp machine and not at the Vista. You maybe able to try a repair by tapping F11 or F10 normally on startup, this should bring up three options.1) Restore to factory settings (destructive) all data will be lost.2) Repair windows saving data.3) Repair windows without saving data.Maybe listed slightly different.Or refresh all usb ports:Enter Device Manager and uninstall everything under usb headings and reboot,Vista will reinstall the Generic drivers for the machine. It certainly sounds like a driver issue over hardware.Does device manager show any yellow exclaimation marks ?

I have an optical mouse that is going out. It will work for a while then go out. Most of the time I can unplug the usb and replug and it will work, but sometimes, I have to turn the computer off and back on for it to start working. I have to tried to plug a new usb optical mouse in. The found new hardware wizard comes up search for software, but finds none. I have looked at the manufactures website and there is no software for this plug and play mouse. I have tried plugging it into different usb ports. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer:new mouse will not work

Mice should not need software. If the new mouse doesn't work, return it and get a different brand. I find Logitech and Microsoft work well. Some of the lesser brands aren't worth the hassle to get the mouse to work well all the time.

Question: Mouse won't work

My computer has been unusable for 3 months since the mouse refuses to move.
What in the world could be wrong?

I have purchased a new mouse - not working either.
Got a laptop but it can't do the work I need done.
I've lost so much business.

Though I've been a computer user for awhile, I'm still ignorant to the tech stuff.
Can't even tell you much more than I have Windows XP, service pack 2.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Mouse won't work

For the new mouse that you purchased, is it a USB or PS/2 mouse. Basically, is the end you connect into the computer square (USB) or round (PS/2). If it is the latter, then you will have to plug it in, and restart your computer before it will work. If it's USB, generally you can plug it in, wait a minute or two for windows to install the drivers, then use it.

My personal suggestion if this doesn't work and you are losing business badly, would be to take it to a repair shop and have them look at it. It's mostly likely worth paying a $30-$50 to figure out what's wrong with it and most likely get it fixed then losing another 3 months worth of business!!

If that's not the case. Then there are a few other things you can try to get the mouse working, though they will be difficult to accomplish with just a keyboard :-/. Let us know how the above advice goes.

Hi
I'm new here, hope I'll do it alright :) I've been searching for a while now, but haven't found my exact problem yet, so I thought I would try it here

I have an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop with windows xp SP3, for about 2 years now. About a year ago I started using usb mouses, because I found it easier to work with. After about 3 months every mouse would stop working (I tried about 3). If I moved the usbconnection it would sometimes work again, but after a while that wouldn't work anymore. I always bought really cheap mouses, so I just assumed it was that + them falling a few times.
A while ago I bought an expensive mouse which worked great, but that died, probably cus I dropped it a few times
So I bought another cheap usb mouse with a wire, plugged it in, and it said 'new device detected' followed by the name of the device. I could move the mouse until it said 'new hardware installed'. The mouse just stopped working. The mouse was still 'on', the scrollpart was lit, and the laser worked as well. I tried a new mouse, with which happened the same. I then tried the mouses on a normal computer, and they worked fine.

Until now, I've been into device manager. Upon installing, there is a yellow exclamationmark, which disappears when it says that the installation is complete, the mouse isn't working though. I've removed the drivers and reinstalled them, but that didn't do the trick. It says the drivers are up to date.
I can't get into f10, my computer has had some issues a... Read more

Answer:USB mouse won't work

You could fiddle with this issue for weeks (as you have done now for months seemingly).

In cases like this, it is often the easiest and most time-efficient move to just copy off what you absolutely value and then reformat and reinstall.

While your comp is still working, make sure you have all the necessary drivers either on the install CD that came with it OR downloaded and saved to flash/cd.

As a side note, I never add aftermarket mouse drivers - I just use the XP defaults and the mice work great.

Switch off the laptop, disconnect the mains, remove the battery, press power button for 20-30 secs, leave it to rest for a while then install the battery, connect the mains and try, HTH.

Hi All,

This is a question from my brother. He's using a cordless mouse, but it has stopped working:

He has changed the batteries - doesn't work.
He has installed his old corded mouse - doesn't work.
He has checked that all connections are in properly - doesn't work!

Has anyone got any ideas to what could be the cause of the problem, and how to fix it.

Any help would be much appretiated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't believe this is a mouse problem. This morning my Gateway laptop was working fine. About 10 a.m. I suddenly began having problems with the mouse not working in certain programs. First it was a solitare game. Then it was in WordPerfect. Later it was in Google Earth. The solitare game still doesn't work nor does Google Earth. WordPerfect is working fine at the moment. At one point Task Manager wouldn't respond to mouse clicks.

I did not install any software. I uninstalled Zone Alarms because I had just updated it and I thought it might be the cause. That didn't help. I rebooted several times of course. I ran Ad-Aware and Spy Bot - nothing. I ran AVG virus checker - nothing.

I am out of ideas. I hope someone has some.

Have you gone into the control panel and double clicked the mouse icon and clicked on hardware .... does it show anything?
I know when I switched from a ps/2 to an optical, I had to restart for xp to find it ....
Might want to check that your usb port is working using some other usb device ....
can you use a ps/2 to do some diagnostics? (You'll have to shut down to plug one in.)

Question: Mouse won't work

Hello, I'm having a weird problem here. My laptops built in mouse (trackball) isn't working, neither is the buttons. I plugged a PS/2 mouse in the back, and IT dosne't work. I was working absolutly fine, and then I went to move it, it would move! The software is there, in Device manager there is no conflicts on the mouse, and it says everything is fine. I don't know what to do! Does anyone know how to fix this thing, oh yea...and I downloaded the latest drivers too, that didn't work.

Answer:Mouse won't work

Try removing the mouse in Device Manager, then reboot. Windows should auto-detect it.

I have an optical mouse that I recently bought. I plug the receiver into the USB port and install the batteries, but the mouse still won't work. The package did not include any software. I was wondering if maybe they forgot to give me the software?

Answer:My mouse won't work

They usually do come with software, but I never use it. Windows can do it. most wireless mouse or keyboard will only require the manufacturer's drivers to operate special features.

Did you see anything in the instructions about connecting the USB plug in to the mouse? Usually there is a button on the connector you have to push and hold, then push and hold a button on the mouse, or maybe it is vice versa, depends on the brand.

Also, if you have done that, try another USB port, and try another USB device to make sure the problem is not the USB port rather than the mouse.

Question: mouse won't work

yesterday we ran AVG and a ton of things showed up...java veribyte and RudlA viruses found (sp?) We thought AVG took care of it, now our cordless mouse won't work. We put new batteries in it and reset it and reloaded the program, but nothing. It just sits there and every now and then has a rainbow effect on the arrow. Also when I went to msconfig to check on it, no easy task without a mouse, all of the programs that I selectively unchecked were checked and running again. I couldn't figure out how to uncheck them so I unchecked them all. Then I got explorer error messages and some google taskbar error message. Before there is another dent in the wall from a flying mouse can someone help me out.

Answer:mouse won't work

If you have a regular ps2 or USB mouse you can plug in, try it. If you have other Wireless devices, perhaps there is a conflict. This is really not a "security" question by itself, as you have another thread open for those. I'm going to move this to hardware.

My older computer finally bit the dust and won't work.  I am borrowing a computer that came with a Trackball mouse and find it very difficult to use.  I attempted to put my old "regular" mouse on this newer computer and it keeps telling me it won't recognize it.  I checked through the other messages here and it appears to be hooked up correctly although it is not color specified like I've seen in some posts.  The Trackball is a Logitech mouse while my other one is Gateway/Microsoft.  I switched USB hub ports and it doesn't work in either one.  Can I somehow make my old Gateway mouse compatible with this computer?  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Answer:Only One Mouse Will Work?

If the correct driver for the USB Gateway/Microsft mouse isn't installed on your system, then that particular mouse will not be recognized by the operating system...Shut down your computer...attach the USB mouse and see if the operating system recognizes it...if it doesn't and you still have the same issue...you will need to download and install  a driver for that USB mouse.  If you are having trouble finding the correct driver...give us as much info on the mouse as possible...model number, etc.Other wise...try to find another mouse...you can find them cheap...try WalMart.

Question: Mouse won't work

I just bought an optical wireless RF USB mouse. It was advertised as having a range of 7 ft. When I plugged it into my laptop it wouldn't respond.

The mouse itself is definitely working, as the red light at the bottom is flashing as it should. I tried all my possible BIOS settings (Ps/2, PS/2 & touchpad, serial). Device manager recognises the mouse. The receiver has no light, so I can't tell if it's receiving, but the it's definitely within range. (In fact I tried the mouse with it practically touching the receiver).

The mouse is not a brand name, but the manual says it doesn't need a driver. I run Windows XP Pro. I tried it on another WinXP machine and it still didn't work, but I don't know the BIOS settings on that machine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Mouse won't work

did you actually connect it. Like pressing the reciever button then pressing the button on the bottom of your mouse? atleast thats what you had to do with my mx700 when you installed it on a new pc.

Okay, I didn't know if this went in Linux or Windows forum, so I just guessed. I'm sorry if its in the wrong one.

I burned a mandrake live CD. I loaded it and it ran great. I couldn't get the internet to work, but nevertheless, I was happy. But here's my problem.

I shut down the computer so I could go back to windows. Windows loaded perfectly, but when it stopped loading, my mouse wouldn't move. Also, on the taskbar it said that it detected a new USB device(Which would be my mouse, I think.). I didn't plug anything else in. And now my internet won't work on that computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With Startup cop, did you disable a program called Point32? If you did, try reactivating it. I'm not sure that will solve the problem but try that first.

Question: mouse won't work

bluesteinm mouse won't work

hello Geeks,
I tried to install XP yesterday and was almost successful. I sure am glad I have a system recovery disk. I only have one computer. Well first thing I have a trigem cognac MOBO with three PCI slots no AGP. PS2 ports for mouse and keyboard, the latter worked but the mouse wouldn't. Secondly when installing the XP OS during installation it stated I may have conflicts with 1 my modem, which is a Conexant soft 56 PCI modem. I also have listed under other devices (using belarc advisor) Conexant PCI modem enumerator, whatever that is, standard keyboard and USB Root Hub. One USB is taken up by my copier/printer the other is open. The OS also stated I may have conflicts with Crystal Audio Codec multimedia device. I did have sound but when installing the OS it connects you to the internet to download needed software, but I kept getting knocked off, hence I believe that when I do install the XP I won't be able to use the internet, so it is pretty useless unless I can get this straightened out. So any advice would help. I have room to upgrade, still a useful mobo. Help, and thank you. Blue

Answer:mouse won't work

Hello Geeks, posted 3 days ago, still no reply and I need some advise.
I am trying to upgrade from 98SE to XP. When installing XP the OS stated that it may not work with the following devices: Conexant SoftK56 PCI modem and my multimedia device Crystal Audio Codec. I had sound but I get disconnected from the internet and the OS needs certain software so it states. So I guess the modem is incompatible. Also my mouse will not work after OS is installed. I am not sure if the modem will work or not because I can not use the mouse to do anything. Should I disconnect all the I/O devices before trying to install the new OS? The OS asked me if I wanted to continue with the installation after I was disconnected from the internet and I did continue with the installation. The installation was almost successful. I have PS2 ports for the keyboard and mouse, the keyboard worked but the mouse's cursor was not responding. There is a bit more info about my mobo in a previous post titled mouse won't work. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks all, Blue

Question: mouse won't work!

The other day, I booted up my computer and found that my mouse was no longer working. I tried rebooting, then replacing the mouse and it still wouldn't work. I had my dad look at it and he said that something was wrong with the file vmouse.vxd, so I copied the file from his computer and tried to put it on mine, but it wouldn't work. I don't understand what could be wrong. The mouse works fine in safe mode, just not in regular mode.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you so much

My mouse was behaving erratically, and I saw that the device manager had about 5 copies of HID drivers with triangles warnings. I uninstalled one of them, and now I can't use my usb mouse or keyboard in windows. Is there a driver file I can copy over the corrupted version to correct this?

Hi! Yesterday my mouse quit working. It blinked a bunch of times and stopped. I bought a new mouse. It won't work either. I took the old mouse to another computer and it works fine on that one. I tried the mouse back on my main computer with other USB ports and none work with the mouse. The USB ports work fine with my phone, camera, fans etc. I changed the USBsettings to not turn off when low power. I reset the computer to a week ago. I unplugged the computer, took out the battery and then restarted it. I did that again without putting the battery in it. I checked for updates on the USBs-computer says they all work fine and no updates. I updated windows 8.  I did a system check for errors-nothing. Spent most of my day on this. What's up?

The USB Keyboard & mouse work outside the OS in the bios or if I boot to a diagnostic screen. Both the mouse and keyboard stop working (lights go out) as soon as the OS hits the splash screen during bootup. The keyboard and mouse also don't work in safe mode. This is a Dell XPS 200 Running WinXP Media edition sp2. Diagnostic mode can be accessed and all USB, keyboard and mouse functions pass diagnostics.

This computer was getting a Stop 24 BSOD and I had to physically remove the HD and connect it to another computer so I could run chkdsk. Once chkdsk finished and the HD was moved back to the original computer it booted all the way up but neither the mouse or keyboard works. Windows firewall is preventing me from getting into it remotely so I am stuck. The computer is just sitting on the Welcome screen.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Question: mouse doesn't work

when I start up my computer the mouse doesn't work... it just is frozen.... I tried restarting and the same thing happened. This has happened a few times before, and basically I just don't use my computer for a few days, and then I start it up again and it works fine. Anyone know what's going on/how I can fix it or something?
BTW I can't really unplug it because it's nearly impossible to access the back of the computer, where the mouse is plugged in. What should I do?

Right now I'm using the keyboard and the numlock thing to move the mouse, which is REALLY frustrating and slow
