External Hard drive crashing computer

Question: External Hard drive crashing computer

I started up my external hard drive, and there was a power failure whilst it was loading onto my computer.Ever since that has happened, everytime i connect this external hard drive, it eventually, not immediately, crashes my computer.Another symptom of this problem, is that when i open my computer, or control panel, or some similar window, it takes a minute to load onto the screen.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I have external hard drives and when I try to pull them up they just keep shutting down and trying to reload. So I went and bought an adapter and a new external to transfer what was on the crashing ones to a new hard drive when I plug the adapter from the bad hard drive into the computer it is doing the same thing trying to keep loading

Hello

I have a strange problem, I have an external hard drive but it always crashes my winxp sp3 - I get the send error report.

I have my xp installation dual booted with Ubuntu and there are no problems at all in Ubuntu so it cant be the hard drive so im guessing it has something to do with the windows installation.

I'm a little confused. How or why are you running an OS off of an external drive? Is Windows 10 installed on this external drive now?

Hello i'm kinda a newbie to anything to do with external hard drives and/or Corruption.
But my external hard drive recently has become unusable, When it's plugged it only shows "Local Disk ( G: )" on My computer, with no drive size/space left. (Image to explain, Yes i know My primary drive is full, but i have no external to backup on. Here)

Any interaction with it will cause windows explorer to crash, and forcing to restart windows explorer, looking around the web i see no real fix i feel like trying, as there's around 600GB of data on there i wish to keep.
So i thought it'd be best to get a hopeful fix specific to my problem just to make sure i don't mess-up and lose the data.

The Harddrive itself is a "Hitachi 1tb External Hard Drive", For what model i have no idea, but looks exactly like this image: Here
It's a Dual power-source external hard drive connected by USB 2.0.

the only real problem i had with the drive prior to this problem was i had a little notification when it was connected asking me to scan for errors, i was kinda worried about the possible corruption so i went ahead and left it to scan the 2 billion odd bytes from what i remember , took ages to do but the problem was still there, I saw no issue with any of the files on there after pressing the "continue without scanning" so i just thought it might have been a bug, as the drive seemed normal.

But then after a while this problem occurred and since hasn't been fixed,... Read more

i can't get my puter to read the data on an external hard drive. wants me to format it even though it recognizes the drive letter i gave it when i did format it. don't want to lose the 100+ gigs of data i have on this drive.

Answer:my computer recognizes the drive letter but not the data on external hard drive

Does the external drive work on another machine?

Also, while the drive is still connected, can you go into Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click on 'Manage...', click on 'Device Manager') to check for any yellow exclamation marks or red crosses next to anything in there?

This computer Vaio running Vista suddenly failed to recognize the DVD drive. When you push the button the light lights but door will not open. Also, under computer the drive is not listed.

When you plug in the external hard drive, the computer sees the drive, loads the driver and in the device manager shows it is working properly but has a exclamation mark next to the name. However, when you look in computer the drive is not listed.

The C drive along with a USB stick work fine.

The computer has been cleaned using AVG and Superspyware. Also, various other aspects have been checked using Advanced System Care. The C drive is 90% full.

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I guess no one has a clue.

It also will not recognized an external DVD player/writer. BTW, all of these were easily seen on another computer and worked fine.

Answer:Computer fails to see dvd drive and external hard drive.

Josh, you have been warned. Do not double/triple post. Someone will post if they know the problem. If no one has posted in 24 hours, you may double post, not 2 hours later.

(if that is not correct, will a mod please correct me? I'm not sure what the rules are on that)

Is this PATA or SATA? did you check that the connection is firm? your DVD-rom is seperate from your HDD.

Hello everyone

I am having issues with my 500 Gb IOMEGA external hard disk

I have been using this HD for a few months now and it has been working perfectly until this morning. I copied a folder from my PC to my external hard disk. After reaching abuot 75% of the copying process an error occured. The copying stopped and my hard disk was no longer in the 'my computer' folder.

I tried reconnecting the hard disk. The Pc sais it recognizes a new hardware, it isntall it and sais that it is ready to use. But in reality the HD does not appear in 'my computer' and i can't seem to find it anywhere. The ahrd disk also doesnt appear in the 'disk management' section (right click 'my computer -> management -> disk management)

After that i tried the hard disk on my friends computer and it also didn't work. It recgnizes the hardware and install sit but we can't find it!

- I have an ASUS laptop with Windows XP installed.
- I did not drop the hard disk or do anything to harm it, (I don't think it is broken)
- I also tried removing the upper and lower fileters from the windows registry, This also did not help.

Please help. It would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:External hard drive does not appear in 'My Computer'

Are you sure it's not in Disk Management, maybe as an unformatted drive?
If so, either the case, the cable or the drive has failed.
Try removing the drive from the case and connecting it.

HelloA friend of mine has a Western Digital external hard drive on her XP computer which stores a lot of her photos. From what I can gather, she used to be able to access the photos until a virus scan was done on her computer. Now she can't see the external drive and has lost access to her photos. If I click on My Computer the external hard drive does not appear, but it is listed in Device Manager and Windows says that she has the latest drivers. What would be the best way for her to access her photos and for her to be able to see the drive in My Computer? Many thanks.Steve

Okay first of all, do you have updated drivers for your USB?

Second, the drive will not show up in 'My Computer' until you partition your drive using FDISK (or Partition Magic).

At first part of my hard drive was "not allocated" so I downloaded Test Disk to try to fix it. However instead of fixing it now the whole storage device is not being seen by my laptop. I'm sure it is because on test disk I clicked on no partition for the device. Can somebody help me please-I'm freaking out here

Answer:My computer is not see my External Hard drive

I've never had good results using Linux utilities to work on Windows filesystems.

You would probably do better using the Minitool Partition Wizard Boot CD. Download the ISO file, burn it to CD, and boot from it. That will show you what partitions and filesystems it sees on the drive. It might also allow you to restore the earlier partition(s).

This problem has been brought up by a number of other people before but none of their solutions are working for me.

I have a HP Pavilion 515n computer running XP Home w/SP2. I purchased a Western Digital 320GB External Hard drive and plugged it in.

The computer recognized the drive but the autostart didn't run as the directions stated. I attempted to access the drive but found that it doesn't appear in My Computer.

It does appear in the Device Manager along with it's assigned drive letter. I tried changing the drive letter with no change. I ran TweakUI and the drive does show up in the list and it is unchecked.

How can I get this to appear in My Computer?

I have hooked up a 120 gig external hard drive that is in an enclosure made by Crescent. I have installed the drivers that came with the enclosure. When I open explorer or my computer it doesn't show up. When I click on the taskbar to safely remove hardware it shows up as USB 2.0 Mass storage and says that the device is working fine. I have removed drivers and reinstalled but it still won't show up in explorer or my computer. I am using Win XP Pro. Any suggestions? I have tried it on two laptops with no luck while my Maxtor one touch 250 gig shows up on both of them with no problems.

Answer:Computer can't see external hard drive

Yeah, i bet I know exactly what the problem is. The drive was loaded with the same alpha identifier as another drive on your machine.

In other words, it's calling itself D:\ when your CD-ROM is already called D:\ and thus is getting hidden in the background.

To fix this, go to START->RUN and type "diskmgmt.msc" (without quotes).

That should open up the Windows disk manager interface. You should see your external drive there. Click on the drive block at the bottom, right click and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths". This will let you pick a new drive letter for the drive. Pick something no other device is using. Hit okay, exit out, and your drive should now appear in "My Computer."

However, now the drive doesn't even show up in device manager either. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Hi! I have a huge problem with my external Hard Drive.
It's a Seagate Expansion 1.5 TB. The Seagate Tech Support told me I have to send it back for replacement, but that would mean losing all my data.
The Problem: Yesterday it started making a click-clacking noise after which it stopped and wasn't recognized by the computer anymore. I tried different USB ports and even a completely different computer. At first it seemed to install the drivers and it showed that it's ready to use. When I tried opening the My Computer it didn't see it. I looked in the Device Manager - didn't find it there. If I connect the HD now for a while it makes a beeping sound which is not too loud (similar to the tone you'd hear in the receiver when you call someone on the phone) and then it stops. The data and power cables are ok, I have a green light on the hard drive.
I also tried a data recovery program as I read that it might be able to see the drive, but no such luck.
Very desperate as I really don't want to lose my data. Worst case I'd like to try and erase all the info if possible before sending it for a replacement, as the data is very sensitive and personal and I'm afraid of identity theft... ((
Please help.

No sound or indication of a USB being plugged in, nothing in "My Computer", and nothing in "Disk Management". Again, NOTHING IN DISK MANAGEMENT. Please do not tell me to right click on "My Computer" and go to disk management. I have done that a million times and nothing happened. Every post and YouTube video has not helped me and i have made no progress on this darn hardrive. I have taken it out of the casing and put it back in twice, used different outlet plugs for the power and different USB slots for the USB plug. Everytime i plug this stupid thing in, nothing happens. Please help. Again, this is BRAND NEW never been used.

Answer:Computer Won't Recognize External Hard Drive

I assume you've tried other USB devices and they're recognized? And you've tried this drive/enclosure with another computer?

However, it looks like either the drive or the enclosure (or both) are faulty. It's not uncommon for any kind of electrical/electronic component to be bad right out of the box.

So the next step would be to figure out which component is bad. Personally, I'd try mounting the HDD internally in my desktop to see if it was recognized there.

Hello I?m using Windows 8.1 pro and my WD 1TB External 3.0 Hard Drive will not recognize by my Computer. The light comes on but it does should the (G:) letter anymore all my other hard drives work. I tried using devise manager and updating the External storage media then I tried uninstalling them and it did reinstall any of the drivers I remove once plugged back in. What should I do?

Also the light on the drive doesn't blink it just stays on.

Answer:my WD 1TB External 3.0 Hard Drive will not recognize by my Computer

There are no drivers required for a USB Mass Storage drive. They are supplied automatically from Windows.
With the drive attached go to Search and type diskmgmt.msc Right click the diskmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Disk Management window is your drive listed here? Is the file system listed as Unallocated Space or is the Disk listed as RAW?
You can try to recover your files by using the free TestDisk program. I have had the best luck with GetDataBack. You will need another drive of the same size or larger to restore your files to.

Hi guys,
I bought a brand new buffalo ministation 500gb hard drive, plugged it into my laptop and everything as working fine.It was recognised in my computer and i proceeded to transfer a file from another external hard drive onto it.This caused my laptop to freeze,so i removed my new hard drive and so the problems began
The hard drive shows up in device manager and disc management but not in my computer
In disc management,it is under Disc 2,offline and not initialised and is unallocated.
When i try and initialize or right click offline i get the message "I/O device error"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating

I have tried different USB ports and USB cables to no avail

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Showing On My Computer

"i get the message "I/O device error"

That almost certainly indicates that the drive in question is faulty. It's by no means unheard of for a new drive to be faulty.

I'm gone into disk management. Nothing. I've gone into my computer, nothing. The external hard drive is nowhere to be found.

Could be that the hard drives are no good.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer:My computer won't recognize an external hard drive

I suggest connecting the drive internally to the system as a secondary to verify it is good. If it works there, you probably have an adapter problem. If not, you probably have a bad drive.

Answer:External Hard Drive-turn off while computer on or off?!

You want to make sure nothing is access the drive or writing to it
You should have an icon in the system tray - lower righthand side to eject (stop) the drive
I have done Both depending on what I wanted to do next - if I want to continue to use the laptop - i would make sure nothing is communicating with the drive and switch the drive off and unplug or if i finish for the day I just shutdown and then switch the harddrive off.

Good day to you all-
Ive been using an external 1TB hard drive for the past year and a halff and its been working perfectly. Never been dropped, hit; no damage whatsoever. This past Saturday I unhooked it from my computer to wipe away a lil dust that was starting to gather on it. I hooked back into my computer an dnow my computer doesnt read it when booting up. Usual when i turn my computer on (Id have to turn my hard drive on first), at boot-up Id have to hit the F1 key and then my computer would just run as normal but now when i turn my computer on it doesnt read the hard drive. The hard drive still works cause when I turn the power on, the LED indictaor lights up and when I turn the fan on inside it, it works as well. At boot-up, when I turn my hard drive on then my computer on, I get the message after hitting F1, "F1 No device to continue, press F2 for Setup Utility" ... any suggestions?? Since the hard drive still works, is it possible for me to have all of my work transferred off of here onto a separate hard drive?? PLEASE help, there is a LOOOT of work on here I need off of here.

I had a Seagate FreeAgent Go, my computer stopped recognizing it/letting me use it. It would show up on the icon next to the clock and let me eject the drive but it would not show up in my computer or in disk manager. It did however, work normally if I plugged it in before I turned on the computer. I purchased a new external hard drive (WD My Passport Essential) thinking the it was a problem with the external.

I am having the same problems with my new external drive as I was having with the old one. I have ran virus scans and have not had any luck getting either to work properly.
I'm wondering if this is a problem with my computer considering the new drive isn't working either or if it is a setting that got changed accidentally. Any help would be great.

I've dismantled an old PC and taken out the 500gb SATA HDD and fitted it into a Smart Drive enclosure to use it as a back up for my laptop.Everything is connected and powers up and the laptop identifies the external drive as a mass storage USB device and loads a driver. I can see the device shown in Devices and Printers. However, the laptop cannot see any of the files which are currently on the disk and which I want to transfer to the laptop,it shows the volumes as empty. I've tried a driver update but that's not the problem. I'd be grateful for any thoughts

Answer:Computer won't read external hard drive

Can you see the device in "computer".As it's a laptop, one thought is that the USB port may not be able to supply sufficient power, although if the device is recognised i wouldn't have thought that to be an issue. Just mentioned that because a new portable HDD I have has a "spare" USB plug on it's lead to double up using two ports if needed.

Hello. I have been using a 120GB I-O DATA portable external hard drive, model HDP-U120.It has been working fine until yesterday when it suddenly ceased to be recognized by my computer. The computer does not auto-read my drive and it does not appear in My Computer, device manager, disk management or safe hardware removal. Other USB devices work fine on that same port so I do not think it is a problem with my computer USB port. Changing the USB cable does not solve the problem so it isn't the cable either. The drive requires no external power source other than the USB cable so its not a problem with the power. The hard drive also fails to be recognized on other computers as well so the problem must be with the hard drive itself, but whenever I plug it in, the power lamp lights up and I hear the motor running, therefore it's probably not a hardware problem. I have no clue what happened to my external hard drive and I am desperate in trying to have it recognized by any computer in order to obtain my important data in it. Please give me advice on what I could possibly do to fix this problem. Thankyou.

Both the USB cord and the enclosure work when pluged on they're read as a USB mass storage device however as soon as the hard drive is plugged into the enclosure th computer fails to read anything, nothing appears under my computer, device manager, or disk management.

I have a WD My Book external hard drive, and my computer suddenly isn't reading it. The drive shows up under devices, in disk management, and remove device option, but it doesn't show up in My Computer. I can't access it. When I go to disk management it said not initialized. I try to initialize it and I get an error message saying drive isn't large enough for GPT. The drive is 2 TB. I tried recovery software, but they don't even pick up the device. I tried different USB slots as well, and another computer but it didn't show up on other computer either. The problem happened after I disconnected and connected to the other computer. I need some help fixing this problem, because I have alot of stuff on the drive! Also in cmd it stated fatal drive error when I try to do something with the drive. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello. Hoping that someone can help me out here and that I did not lose everything off my hard drive.

This started just last night. I have a 300 gig external hard drive (I forget the brand, if that is relevant). When turn the hard drive on it starts running and my computer recognizes it in My Computer. However, I cannot access the hard drive in any way. When I try to there is a response about 2 minutes later saying "F:\ is not accessible. Error performing inpage operation."

The LED on my hard drive enclosure remains lit and is red or green, I do not know the relevance of that either.

If I left out any relevant information, please let me know and i will try and obtain it.

Please let me know if there is any suggestions to getting my hard drive to work again. Or if there is any possible way for me to get the information off of it, if it is otherwise dead.

Thank you.

I purchased a Digital Research External USB 2.0 320 GB Hardrive and my computer simply isn't recognizing it. I have tried installing it several times - with the computer turned on and off. Tried through the Install Hardware Wizard, and all the troubleshooters. I have tried all the different USB ports on my computer to see if that would make a difference, but no luck. It is simply not being recognized. My ports are USB 1.1., but I believe they are backward compatible. My puter is Pentium IV. Any suggestions?

Answer:Computer not recognizing my External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

isn't simply recognizing.. how do you know it?

-does it give you that two tone beep like when you plug in a USB device?
-do you see the "Safely remove Hardware" icon on your taskbar?
-can you see it under My computer, or a blank space between two icons?
-can you see it when going to Disk management?
>right click the My computer Icon
>Manage
>select Disk Management
>scroll down
-what service pack are you running and have you got all available windows updates?

I need help once again. I have a windows 98se based computer. I added a1 second internal hard drive. I now need to copy this drive to an external hard drive. I have had no luck.I use the external drive with a laptop running windows xp home. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:transfer from computer to external hard drive

I guess the first step is to get the external drive working. You can start by telling us how it's interfaced, I presume USB or Firewire.

You need for partition and format the drive before you can use it, that's probably the first issue. Since it's an external, run FDISK from a DOS window under W98 and partition the drive, I'd make it an extended DOS partition. Then, use FORMAT to prepare it for use. After rebooting, you should see it in My Computer.

I brought a FREECOM external hard drive which is mains powered. It was working fine until about a month ago when it stopped registaring on my laptop. I have tried it on another computer but get the same result.
It has a usb connection to the computer. When I attach it to the computer nothing happens or comes up in my computer. The hard drive not make any noise whatsoever, however it says this on the box (think its a selling point) nor does it have a fan.

The external hard drive is called FREECOM HARD DRIVE 400 GB 3.5" / USB 2.0 WIN & MAC Model code PSOAAD

Freecom said they would replace the hard drive but not repair it. I have a lot of data on the external hard drive, is their anyway I can retrieve the data without opening it up as that would void the warrenty.

Any help would be greatly appriciated

Thanks

Answer:External hard drive won't registar on computer

It's not unusual for the electronics in the drive case to fail, leaving the drive unusable unless it's removed from the case and attached to the computer in some other way.
You can attach it internally, buy a new case, or get a USB adapter.

I am trying to backup everything on my computer. What would be a good program to compliment this? I have norton ghost, but all it seems to do is just take an image. I would prefer something where i can manually copy folders from the backed up folder (does norton have this feature, and I am just missing it?)

Answer:backup computer to external hard drive

Ghost does have the ability to perform File and folder backups. Personally I don't really see the need, as you can mount the image backups you saved, which will then show up as drive letters, allowing you to restore individual files and folders.Ghost: Image Backup vs File and Folder BackupRestoring a Backup in Norton Ghost<-- Not sure if this is up to date, you may want to consult Ghosts Help Files for confirmation.

I have a USB external hard drive and its worked for years on my computer. All of a sudden one day my computer just doesn't recognize it anymore. I'm running vista and have no idea whats going on. I tried solving the problem deductively and hooked the hard drive up to my laptop that has vista on it and it recognizes it no problem. So why would my external hard drive just stop working one day on my desktop? I've also checked the BIOS and the hard drive doesn't show up there, or in my computer, or in computer management. When i plug it in though it makes that dee dee sound but no window pops up. It's really annoying and i have no idea what to do. Its obviously a problem on my desktop and not with the hard drive as it works fine on the laptop. Any help would be appreciated as i'm totally out of ideas lol.

P.S. Would a windows update by any chance cause a problem cause thats about the only thing that would be new on this computer when the problem started?

I installed an external hard drive on my Dell computer. If I go to "manage" on My Computer click on device manager - it shows the drive under hard drives. When I go to Disk Manager the external drive is shown as "healthy" with one partition and a drive letter. The drive does not however appear under My Computer hence I can't write to the drive.
I have changed USB ports, renamed the drive, re-booted the computer and a number of other attempted fixes. Nothing works. There is something in my OS that is blocking the display of the external drive under My Computer.

Any suggestions - help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new here so here goes. I have a 1TB WD external hard drive here (USB 3.0) but it recently stopped working. The light blinks every half second. I try to access it with Explorer or 7-zip but they freeze, YET when i unplug the drive everything instantly comes back to normal and Explorer works fine again. I tried WD's Data Lifeguard, same problem. I tried other recovery software, same problem. Tried many USB cables and at least 3 computers, but I've encountered the same problem. What do I do? Should I just look for professional services? (I use Windows 7 Ultimate.)

Answer:WD external hard drive freezes my computer

sounds like a fault on the WD external harddrive thats causing an issue on the PC
i would get it replaced under the warranty , not sure how long the warranty is - but most drives come with more than 1 year.
the issue maybe getting data off the drive, if its the case thats broken, as some of the WD drives with encrypted using a chip thats on the Case USB circuitry

Answer:Computer won't recognize external hard drive

sounds like its registering the usb contact, but not the hd controller. Either you just need the drivers for an external mass storage device, but since its not loading on either it could be the drive, by way of corrution or failure, or even just the interface in the enclosure when you were moving it around.

I would first suggest removing fromthe external enclosure and seeing if it boots internaly in a pc, this would confirm or rule out the posability of a drive failure, in which case it would just be a matter of the enclosure's hardware, or most likely the operating system's drivers.

Akums Razor would dictate that its probably a driver issue, but dosnt hurt to eliminate a few possible problems, and when it comes to hardware failure when it rains it pours.

note: im assuming before this that the drive isn't being shown in disk management as well.

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book 3.0. Earlier today, I connected my external hard drive to my computer, and it showed up without any issues. After I safely removed it, I stored it away. When I took it back out, the end of the USB cable that is attached to the hard drive, not the end that goes into the computer, came out of the hard drive. If you look at the picture in the following link, you'll see what I mean. It's the part that says "SS" in this picture:

http://demo.idg.com.au/pcw/MyBook3.jpg

That little vertical rectangle-like piece came out with the wire, and it was attached to the end of the wire. I put it back into the port, but now I can't access anything on my hard drive. I can still turn my hard drive back on. I just can't get any computer to access it. I'm guessing something got messed up in the connection.

All my data should still be on the external hard drive. Is there any way that I could retrieve the data?

Answer:External hard drive won't show on computer

Yes, that connection on the external hdd is pretty much worthless. here are some thoughts...

1. get really small pliers or paperclips and attempt to remove the plastic "chunks" in the port.
2. attempt to RMA the drive, see if WD will cover broken USB3.0 ports as part of the warranty.
3. if all else fails, disassemble the external enclosure, remove the hard drive & hook it up as an internal hdd in your PC.

Hope this helps, take care!

First of all, sorry if this is being posted in the word section.

Right now I'm using an Emachines computer with windows vista. I bought this computer because my old one (a Dell with Windows 2000) died from years of backed up spyware and viruses. Last time I used it it was so dead that I couldn't even open the disc drive to try and re-install windows, but thats a story for another day.

My question is, would it be possible for me to use my old computer as an external hard drive? I have tons of pictures, music (songs that I made and songs that my friends made), and documents that I never got a chance to save that I would love to get back. Please let me know if there's a way to do this. Thank you.

You could but it would be easier just to remove the drive from your old pc and hook it up as a slave it the new machine.
This way you would be able to access the old drive without booting up another machine.

I have a 2 TB Seagate external hard drive which has worked fine.

It is used on a 64 bit Vista (Ultimate with SP2) Dell machine.

I have had to restore an image backup of C: drive and the drive no longer appears in the Computer folder nor in Disc Management now.

However the drive is lit up and when I insert the USB cable there is the connected sound and when I disconnect it there is the disconnect sound so something is seeing it.

I have tried this on both the 64 bit Vista and on an XP - on neither of the computers is the drive seen.

I would rather hope that I can eventually access this drive as it has 1.7 TB of audio files on it.

Is there a solution for this?

Answer:External Seagate hard drive not seen by computer

As this external drive won't show up on any other PC the circuitry in the box has probably developed a fault.

For about £10 you can by a USB Hard Drive Adapter, see Ebay. Remove the hard drive from the enclosure and connect it to the USB adapter and it should then function as long as the fault is not on the drive itself.

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a USB 2.0 hard disk enclosure and an internal hard drive. I put the hard drive into the enclosure, connected the data cord and power cord, then plugged it into my desktop. I got a message saying found new hardware, but when I opened "My Computer" the hard drive icon did not appear.

I tried jump settings, Master, Slave, Cable select, but none of them helps.

I did not format the disk either, since I can't "see" it, I cannot format it.

What is the problem? Can someone help?

Appreciate any help.

I have had a WD Hard drive connected to my computer for over a year and since added a second one in a 'firewire' daisy chain. The original is a 250G and the new one is a 500G. BOTH have been working for months but, on occasion, one or the other "disappears".

In the past I have restarted my computer and it shows up but, that is not happening this time. Oddly enough the one that is NOT showing up is the original 250G HD. My computer recognizes the 500G that is 'daisy chained' to it but NOT the original 250G.

How does this happen? Can I prevent this in the future? And...more importantly ... how can I fix this??

Thank you for any help you can provide

HELP!!!

I have a 500gb external hard drive which, up until a few days ago, was working absolutely fine.

When I would plug it in to my laptop the device was found under 'my computer'.but would not open. Instead when I tried to open it my computer froze and the 'not responding' message was shown, resulting in a forced close of my computer. Now when I attach the hard drive and open 'my computer' the hard drive does not show at all, but 'my computer' still shows the message 'not responding', resulting in a forced close.

I've been on to a couple of forums already and tried the route of right clicking 'my computer', 'manage' and 'disk management'; but the hard drive does not appear there.

I'm at a total loss what to do and would massively appreciate your help as I have backed up company data on to this hard drive.

Thank you in advance!

Answer:External hard drive not showing in My Computer

Hey pcrquals. I would try the drive in another pc to narrow down where the problem is, a problem with the drive itself, or a problem with the pc recognizing the drive, which might be a problem with the USB port(s) or with the USB drivers. Does another USB device like a flashdrive work when plugged into the same port?

hi,

so the external hard drive won't show up when i click on my computer. Earlier today i reformatted my computer, but now the external isn't accessible. According to device manager, the external is working fine, and i'm wondering what i'm missing.

when i reformatted it asked if i wanted to partition both C and D (D is the external, obviously), and i said no. Yes, i realize i'm an idiot. I just wasn't paying attention. Did i lose all my information on my external? Is there a way to recover what was lost without paying someone 9 million dollars to do it? How do i make the external show up again?

it's a WD 1600JB, by the way.

Hello. I'm running into a problem with my PC connecting to one of my external hard drives and I'm not sure how to fix it. I have two external hard drives and both of them used to work just fine, but about a week ago I updated the USB drivers and ever since then the smaller external drive (a Wolverine drive) is no longer being found. The PC's running Windows 10, if it helps.

The Wolverine drive has two USB plugs on the cord to receive power from the PC (it doesn't have a separate power cord), and when I turn on my computer the hard drive does start up and turn on. If I unplug either of the two USB plugs the computer makes the USB chime sound, and if I plug either back in it makes the chime again, so the computer is finding that I'm plugging them in or unplugging them, but for whatever reason the drive isn't showing up anymore.

It used to show up as "Wolverine (L" in my computer's list of connected hard drives but it's not listed anymore.

I've tried looking up information online and most places just say to uninstall the USB drives through the Device Manager and then let them reinstall but, for whatever reason, my computer has about 28 different listings under the Universal Serial Bus controllers drop-down and I have no idea which to uninstall, and my mouse and keyboard are both USB-connected so if I uninstalled all of the drivers listed I'm not sure that I would be able to log back into my computer account after ... Answer:Computer Not Finding External Hard Drive

Sometimes just jiggling the cable works. Try going to search, type in Computer Management then go to Disk Management and see if it shows up there. Have you used the two drives together on this computer before?

I can't browse my external hard drive without my computer grinding to a halt and having explorer stick in Not Responding. It also sometimes happens just in opening My Computer.
What should I do first to help diagnose the problem?

Answer:My Computer and External Hard Drive Not Responding

Have you tried disconnecting the external drive and then opening My Computer ?

Try the external drive on another PC and see if it causes the same problem.

i have a external hard drive that was working fine until a couple of days ago, im not sure exactly when it stopped working but the only thing i can think of is that the other day i was transferring a film to my laptop until it decided it couldn't take it any more and crashed, then i unplugged the external hard drive at the USB and shut down my computer manually

now when i plug in the hard drive it is detected in 'device manager' and 'disk management' and i am also able to safely remove the drive but it does not show in 'my computer' (or whatever it is that the vista equivalent is called)

also in 'disk management' it appears as 'Disk 1' and says that it is not initialized, however if i right click and i choose to initialize it then an error message comes up saying 'incorrect function'

i have tried different ports, un-installing and re-installing drivers, using a different computer, i cant change or even see a drive letter and after searching for many many hours through different posts and threads and trying them all im still stuck

if anyone can help me to save my data, or even just get the hard drive working again i would be extremely grateful

Alright. So This is kind of a weird circumstance: My brother has a Hitachi Lifestudio 1TB external hard drive. He has been using is for about 2 months now. About two days ago it started acting sort of funny.

When he tries to plug it in, it doesn't even turn on. (The hard drive only starts to spin up when both the USB and power is plugged in.) I was pretty sure either the hard drive or the enclosure had gone bad, and plugged into my computer to see what would happen. And it worked! So my brother plugged it back into his laptop and it was fine.

But now it has happened again. And I only have an Ubuntu laptop with me. (I'm on vacation in NY). It works on my laptop but not his.

I'm wondering if somehow maybe a driver got screwed upon his computer? And if so, would there be a way to uninstall it even when the external hard drive is not connected. That way maybe we can reinstall the driver and see if that will work.

He leaves for Louisiana on Monday,so I need to figure this one out soon.

His laptop is a Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1545. And the computer's that it has worked on have been a custom Windows 7 machine that I built and an Acer Aspire 5610Z laptop with Ubuntu. (My wife's machine that I changed to linux).

Any ideas would be awesome. If you need any more information, let me know.

Thanks,
Harley

Hi all,I googled this but I really can't find an answer, hear goes.I have 2 seagate external hard drives with
all my movies and tv shows.I plug it into my dvd player and watch them on my smart tv.I bought a new one which says seagate external expansion drive. It is not recognized when I plug into the dvd player.Did
I make a boo-boo and buy the wrong one.Any help would be appreciated,thank-you.

Answer:Computer does not recognize external hard drive

Does smart tv have a direct usb socket?

Also many dvd players only recognise fat32 drives, and your drives are probably formatted as ntfs, or maybe drive is not yet initialised yet.

Check format of existing drives, and also see if you can see new drive ok on a pc. May just need to be initialised.

Not sure if drive being mbr or gpt formatted will be an issue. If drive is 2TB or less, I would make sure they are formatted as MBR drives.

I recently purchased a WD My Book, Essential Edition, external hard drive. It worked for about 2 weeks but now my computer does not recognize it. I have always removed it safely from the computer but have always received the message (on start up) that I don't have a high-speed USP port but that has never been a problem before in using the device, it may be slow but it always shows as being active. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Computer not reading external hard drive

I have some additional information about my problem.

Under Disk Management, my E: Book displays and I can even open it from here and see all of the files I have on it, yet it still does not show up under My Computer.

I don?t know how to do a screen shot, so here is what is displayed under Disk Management

Volume Layout Type File System Status

IBM_preload (C:) Partition Basic NFFS Healthy (System

IBM_Service Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy(Unknown Partition)

My Book (E:) Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy

I don?t know what the IBM_Service is? Do you think this is my problem? I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks.

None of my computers (3 laptops, 1 Apple laptop, and 1 Apple desktop) are recognizing my external hard drive. I have some very valuable information on the hard drive I need to retrieve. I have USB disks that are being recognized by all of my computers so I know it is not the USB ports. When I plug the external hard drive in the computer the light on the hard drive lights up and the motor is turning but the computer does not recognize it. Are there any software that can read a hard drive that is not being detected by the computer? Someone suggested Recuva but it did not work (the software works because I inserted a USB drive and the software detected it) regarding the external hard drive. Is there some data recovery software or hardware I can purchase to retain my information instead of sending it to a data recovery company that will cost me an arm and a leg just to retain my information? I am trying to prevent spending thousands of dollar to retrieve information from a hard drive that cost me less than a hundred dollars. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
bdthomas02

Hi everyone and Happy Holidays.
I just gave an eldrerly couple my old Compaq persario computer. It was a 10Gig. They want to learn the computer and play games. I do not have the processor size in front of me but it has a decent amount of ram.

I loaded it with games for them. However a few of the games are newer larger games and run sluggish. such as Titanic, ravenherst, mahjdomino etc. The smaller games run fine. I am wondering if I went out and got them an external hardrive and dumped all of the games into that, would the computer be able to handle the larger games better?

Also when I sat down to this computer half hour ago it began to give a low tone sort of alarm or something. Short low tone. Does anyone have a clue???? I use Avira anti virus. I didn't find anything on that unless I overlooked it.

Thanks for any help.

My son tried a new 80 gig ACOMDATA external drive on his MAC before he gave it to me as a gift. The drive as a new device will not initialize on my WINDOWS ME based Gateway Athlon PC. No drive letter is assigned yet the green arrow in the trough in the lower right of the desktop shows a drive with no letter assigned. MYCOMPUTER shows no new device. I read the Quickstart literature for the drive and it states that use on multiple platforms MAC & PC is available. Unfortunately it also states that to do this the drive should be started up first on the PC and second on the MAC. Since this order was not followed I suspect the drive has a MAC file system on it and the PC refuses my access to intialize it. Does anyone know how to fix this problem like' How do I reformat a disk if I have no drive letter' or does the MAC side offer some solution. So far my multiple Email's over the past 7 days to ACOMDATA have not been answered. So much for there 72 hour(3day) response time. Do I have to give this drive back to my son for his permanent use and buy a new drive? Do all USB/FIREWARE external drives have this quirky capability and init sequence requirement?

I have an external USB hard drive with all my music on it. I recently moved to a new(er) computer. Now I cannot play any files. I get an errpr message: "You do not have permission to open this file." The security settings for the file give full control to "Administrators (ComputerName\Administrators)". I am logged on as Administrator. I went through the process with Windows to take ownership, but,,,, This is a stand alone local machine. When I look at the settings for the hard drive and look to add permissions, when I enter "owner" it shows a name "Ron" which is not me and has nothing to do with me. It says it is in a folder "(ComputerName)" Where is that folder with "Users, Groups, or Built-in security principals?" Any other helpful suggestions?

Answer:Computer Unable to recognize External Hard drive

Its been over a week. Not sure what to do....===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been... Answer:External hard drive shows up in devices but not in my computer

Hello indoow and welcome to Seven Forums. Couple of things to try:

1. Try using a different USB port.

2. Try changing the drive letter.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ndows-7-a.html

3. If you have access to a live Linux CD like Ubuntu you may find that Ubuntu will recognize the external hard drive in Computer.

4. The hard drive may be going bad. You could go to the manufacturer's web site and look for diagnostic tools to check the drive. Or you could use SeaTools for Windows from Seagate (works on non-Seagate drives as well.)

Hello, sorry if this potentially is in the wrong section. New to this website.

But I come here asking for some suggestions or a step by step process on getting my external hard drive working on my pc again.
It was working before, but I decided to plug it into my xbox one console usb port in order to download a game and play which it configured the external hard drive. When I attempted to plug it into my laptop usb port it no longer showed up under devices with
removable storage. I did a little bit of research and found my way to device managers to see if the computer even recognized the usb. Turns out it does recognized it but for some reason it would not show up on the laptop. So as of right now I cannot access
the files inside of it at all. The light is always on and I can hear the fan run inside the external hard drive, also it still works with my xbox one to play the games I downloaded in it so I know it still works. I am lead to believe that when the xbox one
configured it, it changed the settings so now it isn't compatible with my laptop.

Is there anyway to reset the settings on it or re-configure it so I may have access to the files on my external hard drive through my laptop? Thank you for reading!
