Preferred Solution: als 120 missing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: als 120 missing

Do you have an Advance Logic ALS120 sound card? Is the floppy drive an external drive? Do you have Advance Logic ALS120 sound card drivers on a floppy?

I have a computer where the DHCP service will not start due to a missing dependent service.  I did some digging and found that the NetBT.sys file was missing, as well as the related Registry keys and the NetBIOS over TCP/IP service in Device Manager.
I tried copying the NetBT.sys file over from a known good XP SP3 machine, but before I went any further, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.  Can someone offer some suggestions to fix this without having to reload XP?

Thanks,
Phil

Answer:NetBT.sys missing, registry entries missing, and NetBIOS over TCP/IP service missing from Device Manager

For what it is worth, I pulled the netbt.sys file from a known good machine and putting it into the %Windows%\system32\drivers folder, then imported the registry keys for NetBT from the same machine.  Rebooted the computer and the "NetBIOS over TCP
IP" driver showed up in Device manager under "Non Plug-and-Play Devices".  It showed that it was started, and verified that the DHCP client server was started as well.  Everything was in good working order at that point.  Here are the registry

Due to technical issues in the forums and to recover some very important Malware FAQs, the forums had to be restored to a point in time from Sunday morning Sept 15th. Anything posted from that time on has been lost and will need to be reposted. We are very sorry about this, but it was critical to not loose all the important procedures stored in the Malware FAQs Forum.

For additional info on what may have been impacted, see the following thread in the Lounge: Missing Posts, Missing Messages, Missing Accounts

You can post your gripes and questions in this current thread or in the one in the Lounge. While the one in the Lounge is a sticky thread, it is open for posting questions and comments. (Note:No one can post in this thread in the Malware Forum!)

Answer:Missing Posts, Missing Messages, Missing Accounts

Additional note:

For anyone who posted anything yesterday, you may need to repost. You will have to check your threads to see what may be missing. Also anything we posted yesterday is gone too. We are in the process of going thru all threads that appear to be unanswered and working up procedures as necessary to answer the threads. In some cases, you may have already seen our posts or even received and email about them and you may have even added another reply. Since all of this communication from yesterday is lost (and we cannot recall everything we did yesterday), we just have to start at the oldest unanswered threads and work our way back to the current time.

I have been having problems with the Windows update.

I have run sfc /scannow on numerous occasions.

I have run the system readiness tool.

I have run the windows update stand alone tool

Nothing seems to work.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Also, I need feed back on recommendations of updating to Windows 10, or keeping Windows 7 64 Ultimate.

Find attached a copy of my check sur log.

This is just a partial image of the log, due to character limits in the post, so I have uploaded checksur.zip which is the full checksur log.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

Windows XP acting wonky. Text buttons missing, test in IE flashes or is missing, not a valid win32 application

Question:
Okay, this is a tough one I believe. Am fairly knowledgeable but there are always tricks and tips.

Have had same PC for quite a while. No hardware has been changed, no software has been added. Lojack is running on PC and has been for a while. Will ask vendor about this.
Windows XP Home, 3gb Ram, 2.4ghx Dual Core E6600 CPU with great cooling, paging file is system managed, also tried custom size, 3 partitions, single boot to XP, one user, 100gb free.
I have not changed my use or habits on this machine. I see no pattern.
Have all patches from MSFT

Problem: A few times a week while surfing in IE with a few windows open as always, I will get text on a web page that disappears. If I move my mouse it will appear. Closing down IE and restarting does not help issue. Using Firefox does not help issue. Closing all windows and restarting IE does not help.
If I then click on Word, Excel, Event Viewer, Task Manager or other program I will get an error: Not a valid Win32 application. Or I might get: Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. Or I will get: Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service.
Very strange indeed.

If I reboot all is fine and worked again.

You could try uninstalling your video card drivers and reinstalling, download them from the manufacturers web site or have the CD handy.

I see that video card is a PCI-E (so I assume it's a plug-in card, not built into the mobo). You could remove it, clean the contacts and re-insert.

While you have it out, clean the fan.

I've been using a Ethernet cable to connect to my computer for a while since it gave me a faster connection then wifi, but I also use the Ethernet cable for other devices, after a while I swap them I still could connect to wifi on my computer after a month pass I swapped it and I notice that my wifi is not connecting I have check it and it was nothing but a empty list, I have searched the web for a solution for this problem, but none of the solution worked.
I can no longer get wifi and I have no idea how to fix it, I tried to update the network adaptor but nothing happened, after all this,
manually connect to a wireless network gone missing and as well as my Wifi Network adaptor, the only thing that showing in my network connection is "Ethernet Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)" and "LogMeIn Hamachi Virtual Ethernet Adapter #2" those are the only 2 things showing please help!
Also I had my computer for years and my computer had a built in Wifi adaptor or so.

I'm trying to set up a sort of retro gaming system, an old P2-233 I've underclocked to 166 so that those things with the overflow problem don't crash due to the processor being too fast. I was lucky enough to get an AWE64 (ISA) for it, which is a convenient card for such a time thanks to the fact that it more or less covers all bases but the UltraSound, and everything supporting UltraSound supported General Midi anyway (excluding MIDI players or whatever explicitely designed for the UltraSound.)

Thing is, it didn't have a driver disc with it. I remember it was a pain to get PROPER dos support out of the thing. I had to install Windows 95 drivers and then play around with the managers and such until things were exactly right as I recall. Unfortunately, I no longer have that disc. I made do with what I could, and I found a synthgm.sbk file which at least got AWEUTIL to work, but, the file was from DirectX, so when I later tried the so called "basic" disk I found a file that may or may not have been there before that appeared to be a different size, so I overwrote the old one with it. Thing is, some things, such as Descent 2, still don't work right with General Midi emulation enabled. That's fine in Descent's case since it supports AWE, but, what about the things that don't? When I start up Descent 2 with GM configured in the music, there's no music and it runs so insanely slow that it takes a good 10 minutes to completely ... Read more

My computer is acting very strangly lately: - Symantec Antivirus auto-protect turns itself off automatically once a day- The title bar of my different programs (IE8, Explorer, Outlook, Excel) disappears sometime- Start bar is really slow, and sometimes is missing areas- Outlook is working very slowely- Outlook sometimes tells me that my Archieve.pst is in use by another program (even though it is not)- Selecting START - Shut Down does nothing (I have to do a hard shut down with the power button)- Sometimes openning certain programs gives me a MISSING DLL error. But this is not always the case- Seems that the memory for clipboard is really small. Unlike in the past, it does not let me copy images that are of a reasonable sizeI am assuming I have some bad issues. This seems to happen when I am running Outlook and then afterwards, however, it also occurs other times as well. I have huge Outlook files (1 gb max) but that shouldnt cause the other missing DLL and not letting it shut down, I would assume.Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. ----------------DDS.txt ----------------DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by EMintz at 13:32:59.60 on Tue 02/02/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1039 [GMT -8:00]AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {FB06448E-52B8-493A-90F3-E43226D3305C}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\System32\svc... Hey,

I'm having a bizarre problem with Vista Home 32 bit which suddenly appeared overnight. I put my notebook to sleep the day before, and when I powered it back on this morning, it was on the black & white boot up menu saying the notebook and crashed and had to restart.

I opted to boot windows normally but it kept restarting. Same problem with safe mode.

I tried to repair the installation with the installation disc but that didn't work.

Got to System Restore, tried to restore a previous point, but that failed.

I rebooted again, and miraculously it booted up to the desktop. But I've noticed a few major problems:

1. The program folder in the start menu is empty

2. The system tray has missing icons, most notably network connections

3. A few directories in C:\ are missing . Am sure I didn't delete them.

4. Many applications like MS Office or Adobe Acrobat are missing / have broken links and therefore do not work.

I have 2 user accounts on the notebook and both have similar problems.

When I boot up in Safe Mode, the program folder has a few applications listed, but the other problems remain.

System Restore doesn't work. It returns an error message saying a file's missing or something like that.

I feel something's corrupted but I don't even know how to begin searching for a solution to the problem since the symptoms are all over the place!

Would appreciate any help!

So my friend bought a non brand tablet from china with win vista on it. He turned it on and gave the error that a file is missing therefore it would not load the o.s.

I then though mayb I can pull out the hhd and plug it into my desktop and install winXp.

Well it ran well and it installed on the hhd and ran smooth. I shut off the comp and pulld out the hhd and placed it back in the tablet.

I turned on the tablet and it detected new hardware and askd if I should run it on safe mode, network, comand prompt, last good config or start off normally.

Well I try all amd nothing....

It would start but but then the xp icon would show with the loading bar and restart.

And back to the new hdwr detected screen....

What can I do??

I dont know how it happened but one day my cd drive was not working. the tray will open fine and it even lights up however it will not read anything. When i go to my computer the drive that usually says (:e) or whatever for it, is missing. Ive been looking online on how to fix this and nothing worked, then i read to delete the upper and lower filters but my lower and upper filters are missing. How can i get them back? I read that deleting them solved the problem for some people

Answer:cd drive missing from MY COMPUTER. Lower upper filters missing??

It could be a hardware problem ie. seized motor in your drive.

Quick way to test this. Insert a a disc in the tray, make a note of any writing or picture you can see on the disc, push the tray in. Wait for a minute or so, then eject the disc. If the picture/writing is in the same position as when you first put it in, then your drive motor is most likely knackered.

If this is the case, only real fix is a new drive.

New laptop (Lenovo W510), but I swapped boot disk for an SSD and reinstalled Win 7 64bit from recovery disks. I moved My Documents to D: and when I open Windows Explorer all looks fine. When I click on an arrow beside My Documents (or Music or anything), the arrow selected disappears, folder disappears (sometimes), cursor spins (busy), and nothing appears in the right window. If I click on Documents, the right window shows the contents and I can navigate from there, but the folder window on left is useless. Sometimes the folders under Documents disappear all together. If I try real hard, I can render Explorer completely useless and have to reboot. Closing and opening Explorer does not solve problem.

Tried setting up a new user and problem occurred immediately - plus desktop icons appeared without icon images.

Tried SFC.exe to check system files - no problems found.

Any suggestions welcome.
Graham

Answer:Win Explorer arrows missing, cursor spinning, libraries missing

Try editing your settings under control panel. I'm not sure what the problem you're experiencing is because I've never experienced it. Can your system run a 64-bit operating system? Play around with control panel, editing settings, see if that solves the issue.

I logged into my computer this morning and the screen was blue, although I could still see my house and move it around. I can also do Ctrl Alt Delete to access the Task Manager when I don't see the explorer.exe. I know its supposed to be there but its not, I tried to manually start it by going to file new task and running it but it only runs for maybe 10 seconds? enough to see the icons on the desktop and the task bar, then they disappear. I searched online for a few answers but no real help. Im using another PC because I cant access the internet with my laptop that is have the problems. I was able to run hijackthis and put it on a thumb drive so I could post it here.

Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks

I just got a computer for free, a Dell Studio 1555. When I got it, it would try to boot, then come to a screen that said that bootmgr.exe was missing. Sometimes I got a message that said something like mpio.sys was corrupted or missing. I have a Win 7 disk, so I put it in and tried to repair the installation. Each time I ran it, it said that the repair had failed. I tried to reinstall windows 7, and It made it to the first restart in the process. It showed the "Starting Windows" screen, but the colors of the windows logo never appeared, then I got the missing bootmgr screen. I decided to install Ubuntu and see if that worked, and it did (I installed it alongside the Windows installation). It was Ubuntu 10.04. I thought, "OK, so i'll just use this as a Linux machine"...and I decided to go back and reinstall so that I could use the entire hard drive. It never worked correctly again. Each subsequent time that I installed Ubuntu, I was told something along the lines of "Gnome Power Manager did not install correctly" and got a slow and choppy Ubuntu installation. Tried to install 11.10, and it failed completely. I opened the Ubuntu live from my usb drive, and opened the disk utility. I now cannot format, reformat, partition, or delete partitions on the drive. Is all of this just a case of a hard drive on its last legs, or is there something else going on here?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Bootmgr.exe missing... mpio.sys missing or corrupted. Unable to boot

You should try and use the bootable Partition Wizard CD. It should show you something similar to the Windows Disk Management tool. If it works, you should be able to see all partitions, shrink them, deete them, extend them, format them etc.
Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

If you haven't already, also try running a Startup Repair using the following tutorial.
Startup Repair

If you can't format anything, your last shot may be using Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN). This can be put on a USB which when booted, completely wipes every hard drive recognised. So be sure to remove any other hard disk device or drive.

Hey all,

My hard drive died on my main rig, which could access everything fine, just before I went on vacation for a week roughly. When I came back, I used my notebook on my network via a wired connection instead of my desktop, and I noticed that many times, links would give a Page Cannot Be Displayed error, but if I hit refresh they would come up fine. Even on the same page, some images would be missing, or on hotmail.com, one or two of the frames wouldn't show up, or when I clicked to login it would get stuck on the forwarding page and say it couldn't be displayed. Now that I got my new desktop setup up and running, preparing for SLI, I noticed it too was doing the same thing.

I have a set internal IP address, the router I use is set for everything properly, and I am using the same settings as far as I remember on the new setup as I was with the old desktop. The internal IP is set for what it is on the router along with the desktop's MAC address, and the gateway/DNS is set on the desktop to use the router (192.168.0.1). Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Answer:Some pages load fine, others have parts missing/frames missing, etc.

I'd run CCleaner just to blow out temp internet files.

For DNS...I prefer entering the ISPs DNS servers, not using the router for the DNS server. Some routers do OK with that, others don't relay as well. So log into your routers web admin, hit the status tab..and jot down the 2x DNS servers you see on the WAN interface. Use those for your rigs DNS servers.

My laptop battery ran out and it must have shut itself down. When I restarted the following symptoms appeared.

Taskbar:
icons left of the clock disappeared
the taskbar changed from the standard task bar (green start button, blue bar) to a plain gray bar with a gray start button
if I right click on start > properties > taskbar tab > customize - the icons do not match up with the descriptions, for example the yahoo messenger icon has the description "wireless network connection"

My Computer:
If I click Start then right click mycomputer >properties I would expect to see a window with tabs "general, comp name, hardware.... etc" instead nothing appears

My network places > then View my network connections I would expect to see the network connections I have defined. its blank

I can't use my wireless connection because I can't see it to connect to. Other than that all programs seem to be working fine. I get to the internet using a hard LAN connection.

I don't even know where to start. I have read many of the posts regarding taskbar problems but none seem to fit. Any help greatly appreciated
System Information:
I just tried to open the system information icon in the control panel to get the info to put here but nothing happens when I double click it.
I am running XP SP3 I am current on updates, AVG Free (tried uninstalling just in case)

Answer:Taskbar has changed, icons missing and windows missing

Hi there,
I'm still very happy with my XP Pro, but I thought I'd set up a dual boot with Win7 ultima 64 and check it out.

So I popped in another hdd that was sitting idly in a drawer and installed 7 on it. I fully expected that Win7 would be able to see there's an XP installation and create a boot menu. But nooo, it refuses to acknowledge another OS beside it and starts 7 when I hit the switch. So I always need to call the bios boot menu and I kinda don't like that. I'm jaded, I expect my pc to start up unattended while I brew my tea. Start up XP, that is.

I lurked around here for a bit and found some hints...
I copied the boot folder and the bootmgr file into my XP root and tried to repair with the Win7 DVD. But nothing came of it. It doesn't see XP and I've no clue about drivers for it.
But the drive with XP on it appears in red now in explorer window *scratcheshead*.

The second issue, and that's a BIG issue, one of my data partitions is simply not there. It's the primary partition of a hdd, which secondary partition shows up just fine. I wouldn't have been surprised if the XP OS partition would've been invisible, but that one shows up as drive d. And it's yet another hdd. Okay, now it gets confusing, here's my setup under XP:
Disk 0: C (XP) and F (1TB)
Disk 1: G and H (1TB)
Disk 2: D (Seven) (250GB)

and that's what it looks like on 7 (approximately, haven't found the disk management yet):
Disk 0: C (Seven)
Disk 1: D (XP) and F
Disk 2: H
So my G drive just doesn't s... Read more

Answer:Missing boot menu and missing data partition

While installing , Windows 7 does recognize an older version (such as xp), so a boot menu should be created in this way. If not, you are to configure the boot menu after completion of the installation. Thare are some ways to do that. Are you dual booting xp and seven now?

"But the drive with XP on it appears in red now in explorer window *scratcheshead*." -- Can you post a screenshot of this thing?

It appears from your post that you can boot from either os. If xp is not there in boot menu, are you choosing the drive to boot up in each time?

Please post the screenshots of your disk management to reveal the issue of G drive clearly, from both in xp and 7. But apparently it shouldnot be a active one.

Any suggestions? Is the mobo busted or am I missing something obvious here?

Hey everyone!
Just a few details:
Laptop: HP dv2050us
OS: Windows XP Home SP3

So I was downloading a trial version of nero and my entire computer decided to hate me. I'm pretty sure it was a virus. It changed my registry somehow and has deleted important files to ensure that the computer works.
I'm running XP home and the cute little log-in window doesn't come up anymore (it's just the boring username: password:). Also, I wasn't able to access any of the files in the control panel -- it said I was missing rundll32.exe (I downloaded that and put it in C:/WINDOWS/system32) -- so it works now.

I want to just stick my recovery cds into my computer, but when I do, my computer doesn't read them. I've checked the device manager, and CD-ROM is not there, but I have the option to boot from my CD-Rom drive when I look at my BIOS.

I don't know what to do :(
PLEASE HELP!!

Answer:CD/DVD-Rom Drive missing and System Recovery files missing

First thing you're going to want to do is back up any files that you want to keep. Since you can't use your cd drive in windows, you'll have to use a flash drive or an external hard drive. Just copy and paste the files you want to keep onto the storage device (I suggest you do this in safe mode if possible and that you don't copy any (large) folders as there might be hidden files within them that are infected).

Once you've gotten all your files backed up, you have two choices:

1) Follow the steps here and start a new thread in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum (be patient as the analysts are very busy and it can take a while for them to get to you).

2) Wipe the hard drive with a program like dban and reinstall Windows (this is a good guide on how to reinstall windows; if you don't have the disk with all your hardware drivers that came with the computer, then you should also download all the drivers from the manufacturer's website and save them to a cd/flash drive/external hard drive to help speed up the process; if you go this route, you will also have to reinstall any programs that you currently have on your computer).

You could also try to run a repair install of Windows, but, if it really is a virus, then that probably won't help all that much in the long term

I'm on a laptop running XP home. I do not have actual buttons on the laptop configured to control sound (normally use a small speaker-shaped icon in the system tray to adjust volume). For some reason, yesterday I tried to adjust the volume, and when I clicked the icon a message appeared telling me that no audio devices were detected. The icon totally disappeared, and going into Volume Control (via shortcut) had no effect. I ran SpyBot, a bunch of Norton Scans, and scanned for (and removed) several viruses using Trend Micro's online virus scanner. Now I can adjust the volume again....but I can't figure out how to get the icon to appear in the system tray again for quicker volume adjustment.

And secondly: I removed some spyware that was embedded in my system 32 folder. Now every time at start-up, a window showing the contents of system32 comes up. How do I get it to stop? And (thirdly, I guess), how do I get my computer to stop freaking out that a dll is missing? (error msg at start-up) I'm gonna try replacing the file, but what if that doesn't work?

Answer:Sound Control Problem/Missing sys32file/missing DLL

Make sure you have the correct updated drivers for your sound device handy, then try uninstalling it in Device Manager and rebooting and it should prompt you for the drivers.

Once they are installed correctly, you should be able to double-click your "Sound and Audio Devices" in Control Panel, and under the Volume Tab, check "Place volume icon in the taskbar".

As far as your system folder opening on startup, this is fairly common with XP, and is usually a Registry screw-up.

HERE is the Micro$$oft solution.

Hello,
Few days ago, i uninstalled the IE8.
after the restart, the task bar didn't load and i got a message " iertutil.dll not found" i downloaded the file and paste it in C:\WINDOWS\System32
(I tried to paste it also in C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache. but it doesn't exist.)
After that the task bar still doesn't load but i get a different message "the ordinal 681 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll"

Now i can basically work only from the task manager.
So far i tried the following and didn't succeed:

1) Re-install IE8, ( I downloaded the setup file from more than 10 defferent sources and in the prosses to install i get this message, "setup was unable to initialize. Please look at the logs C:\WINDOWS for more info.."

2) Uninstall SP3, (I tried 3 different ways, i keep getting a message "windows could not load the installer for keyboard. Please contact your hardware vendor...")

3) Restore to previous point, I tried with 2 ways
(open new task: %systemroot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe) and
(safe mode with command prompt C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe)
i always get this message "the ordinal 681 could not be loc....."

4) System File Checker ( task manager, open new task, sfc \scannow) the application opens but it doesn't run, i left it there for 3 hours... nothing.

I will appreciate any help,
GeoX

When this first happened. AVG detected a thread. I moved it to the vault. Then weird stuff started happening. "My Computer" and many other start menu options were turned off (i fixed it in properties) Also registry editing and the task manager was "disabled by administrator". (i fixed this too)."

There was "VIRUS ALERT!" on the right side of my windows clock (I fixed this) but it stills shows next to time stamps like in AVG. Internet Explorer always pops up and wants to take me to download an anti virus thing. But I always close it. The virus obviously wants me to download something from their affiliates so they can make money.

Windows automatic update is disabled and I can't enable it again. It won't let me.

"All Programs" in the start menu is missing. Disk C is also missing in "My Computer". I can still get to disk C in "run" though.

When I first got this virus, there was popups always alerting me that I was under attack and trying to get me to download some anti virus software. I went into safe mode and used "smitfraudfix". Although it didnt work on everything obviously.

Here is my main.txt log:

Hello, I am running WinXP Home SP2. I have been trying to use the clipboard and can't find the file. I have visited many sites and all tell me the same. The clipboard in Win XP has become the ClipBook Viewer. As I was told, I did a
system check for all files and folders for clipbrd.exe..........
Even: %windir%\system32\clipbrd.exe Nothing.......
I am convinced that the file is missing and need to find a
download somewhere. I don't want to pay $60 for MS tech

Hi, I am running XP SP2, I regularly scan for viruses, trojans, spyware etc. I have recently changed my broadband modem, installed a new HP printer and since then, (probably just a coincedence) I am having a lot of niggly errors.
First thing is my audio keeps shutting down. I need to go into services and start it every time I boot up. It all works fine after that. I am also getting errors regarding a missing firewall, this seems to happening only after installing PCtools anti-spyware. I am getting more pop-ups now and my computer becomes very sluggish every now and then.
Is there any way I can fix these problems? Should I post a HJT log?

Hello,
I'm having a problem:

After installing a new programm and rebooting, the following probelm ocurred

1) the "all users" icons on the desktop and the "all users" programs on the startmenu are missing.

2) the desktop font has been changes to this awful typewriter style (I think it's courier or something). this font is now everywhere, in all the menue bars, it'sTHE standard font on the xp system.

3) i can't find the little icons, that have been on the logon screen, anymore

4) when i tried to change desktop>appearance, came an error message, that rundll32 is missing in system32
so i found one rundll32 file in the system folder which i moved to the system32 folder. i could use the desktop>appearance then but it didn't solve my initial problem.

5) i then got the tip to check the registry>group policies>nocommongroups settings, but it didn't help

does anybody have an idea????

I went through this same thing. The folders that say empty...are they light rather than normal? If so you didn't change the setting for files and folders correctly (I did the same thing at first) Open up windows explorer (my computer, etc) click on organize, then go down to folder and search options:

On the first tab (general) under navigation pane make sure "show all folders" is selected.

Then go to the next tab (view) and make sure those settings are correct, select the radio for "show hidden files, folders and drives" and make sure all your other settings are the way you want them.
I got mine from clicking on a link to a website I'd never gone to before and then what i thought was adobe told me that I needed to update my flash player to view the content on the page, I clicked ok and it took over my computer with the same exact things you're talking about.

Recently I've been getting some strange error messages when installing game betas and demos. Here's an example: In the Crysis single-player demo, when I double-click the .exe file that starts the 64-bit version of the game, I get the following error:

The application failed to start because d3dx10_34.dll could not be found. Reinstalling the application may solve the problem.

I have this driver on my hard drive in several locations, including the windows/system folder, the windows/syswow64 folder, and even in the Crysis folder where the 64-bit .exe file is found. Double clicking the Crysis icon in the Games Explorer folder generates the same message, but running the Crysis demo in 32-bit mode works correctly.

I had this problem with Halo 2, but downloading the missing drivers solved the problem; this is why the files are already on my hard drive. The error recurred with the Hellgate: London beta software. I tried reinstalling Hellgate and Crysis, but this did not solve the problem.

Someone on the Crysis forum suggested downloading the November DirectX package, but according to the description, this download is only for DX9.0c and below. Would this actually help me? Does anyone out there have any other suggestions? The 32-bit mode does work, but I have a 64-bit processor and Vista64, so I'd like to take advantage of my hardware.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Answer:Missing Drivers That Aren't Really Missing

I ran System Mechanic last night and this morning I rebooted to make the changes stick.  When I rebooted my coputer said NTDRL is missing.I went here http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm and downladed the fix but my luck - 1. Windows could not start because file "<Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll was missing or corruptI tried reloading Windows Xp Home again (thinking maybe something changed since the last time I reloaded Windows this morning.  Now it says Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD. Wel, it's the replacement Cd they sent me when my burner ate the old one! I can get into safe mode and until now I cold get into Window Repair.  I did copy i386/ntdetec and i386/ntdecect.com into C, but the firect I overwrote and it couldn'd do the second.I could scrub the drive with System Mechanic but them I would loose the 30 or so movies I downloaded that have been wating for the RMSd Lasonic hard drive to return from RMS status.  I would really not like to lose all those.     So what do you thing?  Is there hope, or do I scrub and start all over? Sandy in FL

Answer:NTDRL is missing / hal.dll was missing or corrupt

I am totally baffeled with my problem.

I know files and folders are on my computer. When I go to the path they should be they do NOT show up.

For instance
I go to my computer
click c:\
I am looking for the directory "Documents & Settings"
It is not there.

I try using the cmd and use dos commands to check for the directory and it IS there. I tried the "unhide" files and folders thing and it didn't work. I also tried while in dos mode the attrib -h *.* and that didn't work.

this is causing a great problem because the file path that i am looking for
contains the conversions files and folders of converted and burned movies and as a result is taking up a lot of space that I can't get at to delete.

the path I am trying to get to reads:
c:\documents and settings\J\My Documents

It's there when I seek it out in the DOS mode, but "NOT" there when I use any explorer mode under my operating system, Windows XP sp3

I looked around in the forum here and can't seem to find a solution that fits this.

PLEASE if anyone got a solution it would be appreciated.

Answer:Missing Files & Missing Folders

Let's start by finding J.

Click start, search, enter J in the search field and go.

Is it found?

I have a refurbished HP Pavilion dv6700 (dv6809wm) dated 2008 with Windows Vista Home Premium. It had every form of DVD burning software installed (not by me) - Nero (not supported by Vista), Alcohol 120, MagicIso/Disc, and one other that I don't remember. Most were expired trial versions. I unstalled them all. Now . . .

My optical drive is nowhere to be found. Not in Device Manager, My Computer, Computer Management/Services (they were here earlier), nada.

I have read the forums and have tried all the CD/DVD fixes. There are no upper/lower filters. I have tried Matt's fixit, DougKnox fixit, the registry merge fixit from this site. Nothing has worked. I rolled the thing back to factory specs using System Restore. (No disc, backup partition drive). I have reinstalled all the updates including SP2. The cdfs.sys file is nowhere on the computer and I cannot determine how to get another.

The drive appears to work, I hear it start everytime I boot the computer, put a disc in it, etc. nothing but startup noise.

Can anyone help me? Thank you much :confused

Answer:Missing Cdfs.sys - CD/DVD Rom drive missing

1.Downloaded cdfs.sys to your system32 folder within the Windows folder. [c:WINDOWSsystem32]
2.Click on the Start button, then click the Run... option
3.In the "Open" line, type the following (without quotes) "regsvr32 cdfs.sys", then click the "OK" button.
4.If the installation was successful, you should see a message saying that your file was successfully installed/uninstalled.

Hello, get hold of your windows XP cd, then insert this, press r to access recovery console, then choose installation and type chkdsk c: /R.

If you cannot acess the CD make sure that it is booting first in the BIOS and also you could try a repair isntall.

My setup had an MBR issue a few days ago after installing Skyrim. I was unable to repair it using the windows 7 instal disc. I tried the automatic fix as well as bootrec.exe. After giving up and reinstalling a fresh windows 7, my rig has not been starting up properly. It insists on waking up from sleepwhen it was shutdown, i.e. Not sleeping. Well after a few days of this with no other problems, bootmgr can't be found again. Now, when I load the repair disc, it can't find my OS to even try a bootrec.exe on. But, when i go to load drivers the explorer window allows me to browse my c:/ drive and the installation is there. Any suggestions? I would prefer to fix rather than reinstall due to a symantec DRM issue. Thoughts?

I'm using an HP laptop, Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I recently attempted to use a little webcam that I had installed, only to be told that it couldn't be run until I upgraded to IE9. I did that, and then started getting messages about "the program can't start because iertutil.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." Another message that repeatedly appears has to do with hpqtra08.exe system error. I get this iertutil.dll message over and over and over again -- I'm able to do other things with my computer (scanning slides, for instance, and creating files). I tried to download TSG SysInfo, but I can't find it anywhere (I requested that it be saved, but I don't know where it is.) I don't even know where to start here; I'm reluctant to do one of those registry scans and then be told that I need to buy some program to fix it. Is there anyone out there who can help me muddle through this? My Quicken file won't open, of course I can't get into IE, and Firefox continually goes into a long spin where I eventually close it thru ctrl/alt/del because I'm unable to shut it down.

First I would like to say greetings everyone. You were very helpful with previous computer problems. Hopefully, you can help me with this one as well.
My wife's computer started with one problem, but I may have created another problem attempting to fix the first.
*
The first problem:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
Windows root>system32/hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file
*
I have the xp disc, but I could not boot in safe mode.
I entered the repair mode, and tried something like the following:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ I received a message saying it had been expanded.
I think I then typed something like c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
when asked to overwrite I said yes.

*
The second problem:
NTLDR is missing
Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
*

I hit f12 and choose boot from xp cd, the computer says it is checking setup, but nothing happens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Website refused Forum "New" for Windows 7; Toshiba Satellite is XP also. After a Yahoo Ad to boost a PC slammed into my machine, then did not respond over ridding them, I have now an across-the-lower-screen total set of pop-up signs of a MISSING MODULE that
includes these gone, making a loud wire noise/closed file noise also:
Beginning all the same as: C:\Users\Lynn\AppData\Roaming\ridret.dll,

List on ends: ridret.dll, enlex.dll, scwbro.dll, btrapi.dll, dertig.dll, cplec.dll, udpapy.dll, wsmsht.dll, hwbie.dll, ladmge.dll. I must replace this module. Even though the slam-scam PC scanner (I use Windows Defender and AVG and Malware regularly) called HealthBoost did offer to assist, the many problems related remain and no further assistance was offered, and my scan scheduler became turned off/non-operating except by manual turn-on. How do I replace this module? Thank you.

Hello

Here we go:

Symptoms: On start screen, the icon images do not load and computer hangs. Occasional BSOD.
After a few restarts computer runs fine and as long as it passes that start up spot.

I recently did some 'housekeeping' on the pc and removed many old programs, files, folders etc...

Malewarebytes Pro scan: 0 infections
Sptbot S&D scan : coupon bar (however I installed that)
Avast Interent Security scan : 0 infections

I had run a Hijackthis to look around (but I deleted nothing) and saw a bunch of "(File missing)" after the strings. Didnt know if this is an issue...

Also, on the GMER I could not check off a bunch of the boxes as they where greyed out. The reults was "GMER HASNT FOUND ANY SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS"

Thank you

Hello to all!

I'm new to this forum and obviously i'm not sure if this is the right place for starting and posting this thread.

Since i'm pritty desperate i'm going to explain the best i can what is really happening and how it all started:

since a few days ago i was noticing that a few files, specifically mp3 files are missing from my music collection. I managed to recover the missing ones and transfer the whole collection to a new drive without issues. Today i've found that some recently downloaded files, including several mp3's where missing again from the new HDD. I started to look around the internet abut the problem and what could be the reasons that causes my files to "vanish" from my HDD. As i was reading, i stoped at one thread in other's site forums that related to some "security" and "user privileges" issues in Win 7. I then tried to "fix" the problem but noticed that the files where still missing.

Next thing i tried was looking for the missing files in some AppData subfolder named something like "virtual backup" or something. That was the last time i saw the "user" folder and the last time y accessed my local drive. Turned out the folder just dissapeared from the screen after a short "access denied" dialog box (error). After that, all of my desktop icons dissapeared and my c: drive went like it's empty and can't be accessed, still i can see the drive lying there and every time i run a virus ... Read more

Answer:Missing files, missing "user" folder, can't access local drive

Viruses do things like that. The scenario sounds familiar. Scan with Malwarebytes. The free version is good enough.

Is there supposed to be Microsoft Office Diagnostics and Microsoft Office Sessions in Event viewer? If there is, how do I get it back in event viewer?

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Office Diagnostics and Office Sessions are added to the Event Viewer with Office 2007.

I am running Vista Home Basic. I first noticed this afternoon that my "Documents" folder was empty. I searched all locations and all I found was a shortcut to one of the missing files. It gave me the following error:

The item that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to remove the shortcut?

I did a system restore to the recommended restore point. On reboot some folders and files had appeared in "Documents" but many were still missing. I tried another system restore to an earlier date but upon reboot had a message stating the restore was not successfull and no files or settings had been changed.

I had a look for my "Documents and Settings" folder but couldn't find it.

I chose options to show hidden files and prtected system files. I turned of the sharing wizard option also.

I searched again for "Documents and Settings" and it appeared in the search window, on clicking I got the error:

Where to start? I run Windows XP Professional, recent problems with the WINLOGON.EXE file missing meant a full re-format of the drive and I lost tons of work. During the course of many other re-boots, re-formats and re-instalations the error moves. It eventually settled on missing WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file.

After many adventures I got it running but it has come back!!!

Researching this on the web I tried using the recovery console and copied the file from the CD to the disk using:-
c:cd system~1\_resto~1\rp4\snapshot> copy _registry_machine_system c:windows\system32\config\system

Feeling cocky I restarted the PC only to find the missing file has moved again to system32driverspci.sys

Having spent the last three weeks trying to fix this I am at my wits end and the PC needs to be fixed or grow wings as it will be flying out the window shortly. I am no PC wizard but can follow instructions. I have read each error but no report on this type of series of errors. I thought a reinstallation and keeping the PC off line would fix it - but it only lasts for a day or two.

Help please?

Answer:XP - unable to log on - missing system file - moved to missing pci file - where next?

It was working day before yesterday.

The Tray icon only shows the network/Ethernet adapter; the wifi icon is missing. Normally I'd click on the wifi icon to connect to wifi networks; that option is not available. Instead I get "Not Connected - No Connections Available." (If I plug in an Ethernet cable, that message goes away. But I need wifi!)

I head into the "Settings" app, choose "Network & Internet", and the topmost tab is "Airplane Mode"; the "Wifi" tab is missing from the Settings app.

I head into the control panel, network and internet, network connections, change adapter settings, and my Wi-Fi adapter is there, enabled, and full green signal strength.

"Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235"

Disabled it and reenabled it to see if that would help, didn't help. Rebooting (twice) didn't help. Full power reset (press-hand-hold power button for 5 seconds) and restart didn't help.

Ran network troubleshooter, it says there may be an issue with the wifi adapter's device driver; it tried to fix it but failed. So I manually updated the device driver in the Properties dialog; that seemed to actually install a new driver (based on how long it took) but it didn't help.

I wonder if there was a recent auto-update for this device that's causing a problem? Or is there some way behind the scenes to hook up this device (who's driver seems to be working) with the windows 10 app (which isn't recogn... Read more

2) uninstalled the driver (removing from disk)
3) deleted the adapter (right-click didn't let me do it; the option was disabled, but I could delete it by pressing the "del" key while selected)
4) refreshed the view (f5) and saw that the adapter was no longer in the list
5) went to the device manager

8) rebooted.

I was connected to the internet through an Ethernet cable connection while I did this; it may have helped but I'm not sure.

Hey all. I'm attempting to fix the computer of someone I work with. It's an HP Compaq 8000 Elite running Windows 7 Professional.

According to him, 3 updates were recently installed. After the updates completed, the computer rebooted, then the "BOOTMGR is missing" error message came up.

I searched the web for solutions to that particular issue, and the main consensus seems to be to run a repair from the Windows 7 installation disc. I tried that, but when the recovery manager searched for installed operating systems, it found nothing.

I went to the command prompt in the recovery manager and typed "C:" to try and determine if anything was installed. The C: drive was labeled "OS", but there didn't appear to be anything on it other than a TEMP folder.

Then I ran Ubuntu via flash drive, which allowed me to access the corrupt hard drive. However, I only saw that TEMP folder, which contained text documents.

Now I have the corrupt hard drive plugged into my personal desktop, as a final attempt at retrieving any files. When I navigate to My Computer to see the connected drives, I now see:Local Disk (C:) - My main hard drive

OS (E:) - What I assume would be the OS partition of my co-worker's drive, but it says 39.9 GB free of 39.9 GB (It's supposed to be a 500 GB drive).

SYSTEM (F:) - 1.95 GB free of 1.99 GB. Not too sure what this one is.

HP_RECOVERY (G:) - I know this is the partition of his drive dedicated to restoring the OS to f... Read more

Answer:Missing OS after "BOOTMGR missing" error. Possible virus?

Update: I just found out that this didn't happen immediately after the update. Apparently the error message came up during rebooting a few hours after the updates were made. This makes me lean more toward a virus issue. What do you guys think?

A friend of mine recently got some malware on his computer, we installed malwarebytes, which seemed to have fixed the random virus detections and internet redirects.

However, ever scince this malware got on his computer (windows xp) internet explorer wont open, when we do get it to open, it doesn't seem to connect, however firefox has no problems.

We tried running "iexplore" in the run command and nothing pops up.

So then we tried to locate the iexplore.exe in "C\program files\internet explorer"
and it wasn't there, we then tried creating the exe manually with the same name, however it said that the folder already contained the file. The folder options has the "show hidden files and folders" option checked, yet we can't find it......

Can someone please help? Thank you.

Answer:Iexplore.exe missing yet not missing.

make sure you have unchecked the hide protected operating system files.
Could be worth a try.

Hi,

I had a search on this problem and realise it's prevalent but I haven't found anything that solves the problem yet.

A few days ago I had the missing hal.dll problem come up. I went through various 'fixes' without any luck. However in the end I was able to reinstall XP Pro and keep the files from the previous install. Great!

Today, however, I'd left my PC for a bit and when I came back I put in a CD I wanted to look at but when I used explorer to look at the CD drive it only showed files from the previous CD i had in. Then suddenly I got a message saying something about input/output. The PC froze and I had to reset. I got an error message along the lines of missing NTLDR file.

I looked up that problem and found out I should create a boot disk with floppy disks. The instructions were to delete the files on the first disk and copy onto it the NTLDR file, ntdetect file and create a boot.ini... anyway done that and now have the hal.dll problem.

Now I know to go to restore and press 'R' and that I should then have an option to choose the install but with me this doesn't happen. I just go straight to a C:\ prompt. It won't find a boot.ini file. In fact i did 'dir' and it finds very few files at all.

chkdsk comes back with one or more unrecoverable errors.

All I want to do now is reinstall xp so that i don't lose any files. I then want to copy any files i want onto CD. As my pc seems very unstable i want to then... Read more

Howdy byepeeps...

From what it looks like it is not good news ...

What I'd do if it were mine is to run the diags from the manufacture of the hard drive ( you can get most of them from here http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 ) and make sure that there are no errors on the drive...

Next I'd run memtest http://www.memtest86.com/ to make sure there there are no errors in memory...

The problem IMHO is going to be one or the other ( or maybe a combo of both )...

In fact i did 'dir' and it finds very few files at all.

What files did you see?

Some of those files may be directories...

I worked for a while later and kept ignoring the "you must restart your computer now" messages. Finally i restarted the computer and on my desktop, start menu, and in any window i open, the folder icons and some other program icons are shown as the find icon. Is there any way i could fix this. Code:
Windows 10 Anniversary

When i search, my PC looks like this:

It used to look like this:

I used to be able to turn Cortana off and then back on, and "My Stuff" would return, but that's not working anymore

I have no idea why it's only showing 3 categories now. I can click "More", but there's plenty of space there. It's annoying that it takes an extra click now
I've tried to create a new user and it looks the same on new user accounts.
I've deleted and rebuilt my search index. No change
Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks

Answer:"My Stuff" button missing in search + missing search categories.

So MS changed things. They changed the start menu. They actually fixed some bugs too.

Under 'More' I have 9 categories.

If you're serious about searching your files and folders, use
Ultrasearch
Everything (void tools)
Locate32
e.g. (freeware)

All very quickly index your NTFS disks, and provide 'instant' results.
Ultrasearch probably has the most GUI options. Everything v1.4 beta has only just added GUI search limits.

Cortana search on files/folders only finds indexed items; it won't find executables (exe, cmd, bat...)

Hello!

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

Answer:missing dns server, missing rpc server no internet

What do you mean it connects to network but no internet?
Are you in a LAN? Since ip starts with 169
You should describe your network environment and it would be more helpful for people to diagnose.
For example if you are in a Corp LAN, maybe you need to set a proxy to connect to the internet etc.

I compressed my entire C drive. When I rebooted I got the error "Bootmgr is compressed"

I don't have a optical drive, so I made a bootable USB drive using YUMI 0.2.3 and added the windows 7 recovery ISO. The USB drive boots and I can enter the recovery console, etc.

It couldn't auto-repair the problem so I tried enterinng the following in the command prompt code:

c:
expand bootmgr temp
attrib bootmgr –s –r –h
del bootmgr
ren temp bootmgr
attrib bootmgr –a +s +h +r
I guess "ren" didn't work or something, because now the error is "Bootmgr is MISSING".

Still, the recovery disk cannot auto-repair.

i tried entering the following in the command prompt (from bootable USB):
bootrec /fixboot

It said the operation has completed successfully. I took the USB drive out and rebooted. bootmgr is still missing.

I also tried:
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Total identified windows installations: 1
Add installation to boot list? yes<y>no<n>all<a>

I selected yes, it said "The requested system device cannot be found".
On that note, I am stuck. How can I restore bootmgr?

Answer:bootmgr missing error, became bootmgr MISSING.

try uncompact it in commad promt by typing compact /u /a c:\*.*

Question: What am I missing?

I keep getting advertising icons added to my desktop and in My Favorites in IE (examples: "Find Love!" and "You're Approved!").

I have done everything in the "Read and Run Me First" sticky to no avail. I went line by line in Hijackthis Log and nothing seems amiss. Any suggestions?

I know that this probably isn't a major problem, but it sure is getting annoying!

Let me add that I am not that great with computers. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Answer:What am I missing?

Welcome to MG's.

As the READ & RUN ME indicates, if still having problems the below three logs (from the READ ME) are to be attached to a message:

BitDefender online scan log
PandaActiveScan online log
HijackThis log

Make sure steps 6 & 7 of the READ ME were follower properly and attach those logs.

Question: Missing MUI????

Hello everyone, I have a few questions concerning the MUI Cache.

I have been running a program called Poivy on win XP, it was working fine this morning and suddenly this afternoon I have this error coming up.
" missing mui poivy"

When I try to open it it is leading me to the internet, instead of opening the program. I cannot get the program to open.

I have had a look my Hijack this log to see if there is a virus or if any settings have been changed. I have noticed some new entries...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUI Cache

What is the MUI Cache? I have looked in the registry and I have 240 entries here. Is this something I can delete, is there something imparticular I should be looking for in the MUI cache?

Thankyou for your help!

Question: Missing SID

I'm tryng to duplicate a fault on a user's machine....
What appears to be the problem is that the Network Service User has been demolished

The S-1-5-20 Key is completely missing from HKU.
I've tried removing it from my VM, and although I can delete the content of the Key, I cannot delete the Key itself
I've also deleted the reference in the ProfileList to no effect.

Since I'm doing this by forum/email I can't actually get hold of the machine itself - and so far, all I've seen is results from selected REG QUERY commands.
I'm having them look using Regedit on this exchange of data - but would appreciate advice as to how to completely remove the HKU\S-1-5-20 Key to check the results I get.

Any offers?

Answer:Missing SID

Try right clicking on the key. Select Permissions. Select Advanced. In Permissions, select the "user", Edit and full control.

I assume you're going to back up the registry before trying to delete it.

Question: Missing .DLL

I haver received an error message Number 1157 when first attempting to run my new SpyBlaster shareware (thank you kindly). This is the message: "Missing .DLL" then this: "MSVBVM60.DLL" . I believe this has nothing to do with the SpyBlaster. I believe this has to do with a cache overrun in conjunction with Roxio's Platium version CD read-write that sent me into "safemode" and then processed to disallow access to my Roxio driver.
Although I had a tech come out (I am a novice, and should not be as I use this darn laptop for every little thing) but he was completely baffled by not being able to connect the Plexor CD read/write and its driver (although he scrapped every unnecessary program from the harddrive.
This is an old laptop, with only 4 gigs, 2.48 used, 1.+change left. I am careful not to over do things, but have left the Roxio software in place, unused, as I do believe Plexor is wrong - it is not the CD proper, or even the software, per se, but the missing .DLL (shared .DLL has come up before in this context).

Thank you for your assistence!
illyia

P.S. I also am missing a "HIMEM" that occasionally is mentioned, usually after a semi-crash and just before Norton tells me that my "harddrive is not reporting freespace accurately"...

Question: Missing 4.5 ghz

I have XP Pro with SP2 on a Pentium 2.5ghz system with one gig of RAM. My 80 gig harddrive has 2 partitions, a C and a D. The D is fine but I just did a size check on C by right clicking on it and choosing properties. It said 15.8 gigs used. However when I opened C, selected everything, both hidden and non, and clicked properties I came to only 11.3. So I'm wondering where the other 4.5 gigs are? No doubt there's a simple explanation so if anybody could point me in the right direction I would be really gratful.

Question: Missing QL Bar

Hello all,

New Vista user & poster.
I have a laptop with Vista Home Premium X64 on it. The Quick Launch bar was missing so I followed this advice:

>>1. In an empty space in the Taskbar, right-click.
>>2. Select Toolbars, New Toolbar.
>>3. In the Folder text box, type: %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet >>Explorer\Quick Launch
>>4. Click Select Folder.
>>5. The Quick Launch toolbar displays in the taskbar.
>>
>>To modify the Quick Launch toolbar properties, unlock the taskbar, right-click the Quick >>Launch toolbar title. Change any of the toolbar properties.

It Did give me back the QL bar but it is spaced away from the far left 'Start' icon and it will NOT move back to the left any additional amount. It is almost like there is something there but when I start any pgm - its taskbar 'button' goes in between the Start icon and the QL bar icons. It is reversed from how it shud be - with the Start icon, then the QL bar icons, then the open pgms buttons! Also, when I right clik on the Taskbar - Toolbars, it shows 2 QL toolbars with only one checked, when I unchecked the one to see what would happen - the QL bar was gone again!!
Also, there is a desktop.ini folder on the Desktop whose properties show it as "Hidden", it has in it [.shellclassinfo] [email protected]%systemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll, -21799
I have no idea what it is and why it just showed up on my Desktop... Read more

Question: Missing DLL???

I have Verizon DSL and Windows XP. After rebooting my computer in the morning and again this evening after work, I got this message both times:

"The system DLL user 32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly.
The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\HHCTRLOCK occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor should be contacted for a new DLL"?

However, everything seems to be normal.

Is this something I should be worried about? .
