Preferred Solution: usb sockets

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: usb sockets

Zip the whole thing up and attach it here.

Hope someone can help, I live in a new appartment and it has 4 phone jacks. One only can be used for my modem/wifi router, guessing that's the master socket. The other three in the bedrooms only seem to be for phones, slaves I guess also. Is there a way to make all give out an internet line? I have photos of it all if needed. Set up by telstra broadband and supposedly nbn network ready, fibre optic and all that..

I have just bought a digital camera which i cant connect to my pc as i dont have enough usb sockets.I have 2 which are taken up by a lexmark all in one printer scanner and a motorolla cable modem.Ihave thought about buying a mini usb 4 port hub but i am unsure as to how easy these are to connect.Should this pose a problem?.I am currently running windows 98se.Please help.

Answer:Not enough usb sockets

Why not just unplug the printer while you download your photos?Or just buy a usb hub all you have to do is plug it into 1 of your usb sockets then use it for your printer and camera.I would advise you to get a powered hub if possible.

Question: sockets

what's with all of the socket numbers for in AMD cpu's? why doesn't intel have them? what differnce does it make between the diff sockets?

Answer:sockets

The socket typ tells what type of CPU you can plug into it. this also goes along with what chipset is in the motherboard. Intel's are: Socket 478 = Penium 4
Socket 370 = Pentium 3
Slot 1 = Pentium 2 and some earlier Pentium 3's

As for AMD's I'm not completely sure about all of them but some are: Socket A = Athlon, Athlon XP, ?Duron?
Socket 754 = 64?
Socket 939 = 64?
Socket 940 = 64?
The ones with the ? mark I'm not completely sure about. I hope this Helped

Question: C++ Sockets

I'm looking to make a program that will work on a few different OS (Most likely Solaris, FreeBSD, Windows, and Linux). I want to make a program that uses sockets. I would like this program to be one universal terminal C or C++ program for those OS, meaning I don't want to make different versions for each OS. I know how to program with Winsock and sockets in general in Linux. From this I realize that Winsock and other sockets on other OS are very different. Is there a book or anything that teaches how to make a socket libary that is compatibile for alot of OSs? Or is there a socket libary available already that will let me do this?

Answer:C++ Sockets

If you want the program to run on multiple platforms, consider java. Otherwise you're going to have to code compile-specific preprocessors into your code which, in my opinion, obfuscates code to the point that it becomes unmaintainable. From what little I know of java you can take the same executable and run it on any OS that has java runtime libraries installed. I could be totally off base on that -- someone more experienced with java would have to provide the clarification on that. Winsock implies Windows. You're not going to find any winsock specific functionality on Linux or Solaris of FreeBSD. However, these OS's should have socket support built into them since the idea of sockets originated with Unix anyway (just another idea pirated by Gates.) Amazon.com has a book called "TCP/IP Sockets In Java: Practical Guide for Programmers." I have no idea what this book contains or how useful it may be to you.

Good luck.

Question: USB Sockets

I have a ECS motherboard (L4S8A2)which has 4 USB sockets which are accessed from the rear of the computer. Also on the motherboard is a connector to connect the motherboard to front USB sockets but I don't have any. It has been suggested to me that you can buy USB sockets that fit in a vacant floppy drive slot and then connect to the motherboard. I don't want a USB hub as a lot of devices will not work unless plugged into an original socket. All I want are some USB sockets on the front of my computer.Any ideas out there?

Question: Sockets

So, after carefully scouring various websites, I'm starting to think I'm better off upgrading my CPU when I pick up a new motherboard.

What my question is - the chip and boards that are socket 754 are half the price of the 939. How do the performances compare? Obviously the 939s are going to work better, but am I still going to get some bang for my buck from the 754s?

I have 2 different RAM spots on my motherboard and I have 1 RAM stick that is 256 MB and it has 2 little slots on the bottom, and I have another 128 and 256 MB that have 3 little slots at the bottom. I installed both of them but I only get 256 MB from the 2 slot stick. I took the 2 slot stick out in put in my 256 and my 128 and I get 304 somethin like that. Now, my question is can i put all the sticks in there and get like 640MB of RAM?

Question: M2 sockets

ok i finally found out that it will, be at the most, 6 months before i build my first computer cause we cant get my grandmas house ready to sell yet. i just want to know when the M2 sockets come out and is it worth it to wait if its over the time i build my computer?

Answer:M2 sockets

Socket M2 will come out in the spring of this next year.

Just remember that the price to performance ratio is gonna be a little lower than skt939 at that time due to it being a brand new platform.

According to AMD plans, skt939 is here to stay for a few more years, so don't get to anxious to jump to M2.

Now is a good a time as any to build a computer, IMO.

What can I do? Can you link me to a product?

I saw 2 processers today. A AMD64 4200 socket am2 and one that was socket 939. Is there a diffrence? Which ones better?

Answer:Help with AMD sockets

AM2 is the newer socket and supports faster memory (DDR2). If you're planning on building/buying a new system I'd recommend the AM2 (provided you have a AM2 motherboard), especially since the next batch of processors for the future socket (AM3) will also be available for AM2.

Question: Sockets

I searched AMD website for a little while but I couldn't find the answer I was looking for. What is the differecnce between a a socket 939 processor and a socket AM2 processor, other than the AM2 being newer?

Answer:Sockets

AM2 uses DDR2 and 939 uses DDR(1). AM2 has 15% performance increase. If you want better options to upgrade get AM2 because DDR2 is more future proof. But socket 939 is still good, but I would recommend AM2.

Do some Googling, it's your friend.

Excuse my dumb question. I am downloading digicam pics onto my pc from a Minolta XT. I have done this several times before sucessfully. Now it does work. I have recently installed a new HDD but re-installed all the camera CD software. 1)Am am connecting the cable into the correct socket in the back of my CPU.There is no socket called a USB. I have guessed before and it was correct. The best fit is labelled S/PDF OUT and is below the keyboard and mouse inputs.(it is a circular socket type cable- not a flat headed pin one) and this is the one I am trying at the moment.2)Is there any way of seeing if the USB port is operating OK? I have done into Hardware Manager in Control panel- a printer USB port was faulty which I have fixed but there are no other excamation marks. 3)Do I need to run my motherboard CD in order to get a USB socket working?I am running Win XP. Any suggestions most welcome.

Answer:Where are the USB sockets?

My USB sockets are at the front, bottom of my processor and this is where I connect the lead to my digital camera. If this info is not right for you then I'm sure someone else will provide the right answer.

Well, in general, I don't have networking issues. However, the error you are showing suggests that someone or something deleted certain registry entries. Maybe you installed an app that has compatibility issues, or you can try rebooting.

Another option is to remove IPv4 protocol from networking and re-add it.

Question: windows sockets

dear sir,
I am a BCA student, doing a network related project and I am stuck up at a point. My requirement is as follows. In a windows lan implemented using a hub, how can I access all the details of the packets in transit in the network. I am sitting at computer A and want to eavesdrop on the communication between computers B and C, B and D, C and D etc. How is it possible? Isnt it that using sockets, I have to communicate directly to B or C to get these data? I would like to know how a socket created on my machine is able to collect all the details in the network including that of other computersPlease help me out.

Answer:windows sockets

Here are a couple of things to think about:

(1) what is the difference between a hub and a switch and a router? For your purposes, understanding how a hub works should be important.

(2) what it the content of each TCP/IP packet and how is the information contained in the packet?

Your assignment is essentially to understand how a simple sniffer works.

Hope this helps.

HiCurrently I have a desktop computer, but it's time to upgrade to laptop. But I would like to keep the monior, keyboard, speakers, etc, so I could use it at home aswell. So what sockets should I be looking for on a laptop? I've even been considering a mini laptop.regards

Answer:What sockets on laptop?

Some people would say going from a desktop to a laptop was a downgrade! If your keyboard and mouse are PS2 then not too many laptops support that socket, but they (kb+m) may be USB and most laptops have at least 3 USB sockets (you do know that a laptop has a built in keyboard and a touchpad that is used as a mouse?) You also get a 15" or 17" lcd screen on a laptop but if you want to use your old monitor then you will need a VGA socket on the laptopAll laptops have an audio out 3.5mm socket for speakers (which are also built in to a laptop)

I have an Abit AN7 Motherboard (AMD), there are 2 PSU sockets on the board, ATXPWR1 (20 pin) & ATX12V1 (4pin). Do they both have to be connected to the PSU?  :-/

Answer:Motherboard PSU Sockets

Yes, the 4-pin supplies 12v to the processor.  If your psu does not have the necessary connection then an adaptor cable is required to make use of one of the standard 4-pin Molex sockets. Here is an article from radified.com.  You might like to check your psu power rating.

I have added a second SATA DVD drive to my Windows 7 Medion Akoya MD 7659 computer and it is not recognized in the BIOS or in Windows Explorer. When I reconnect this drive as the first DVD drive it works as expected thus eliminating several possibilities such as faulty power and data cables and connections.

The mainboard is an Micro Star MS-7707 as read on the board itself and confirmed by Belarc Adviser. As the SATA sockets 1 and 2 are active and SATA sockets 3 and 4 not active can anyone offer me some guidance please towards enabling sockets 3 and 4? In the BIOS SATA Mode is set to ACHI and also available are IDE and RAID modes but from my very limited knowledge of SATA modes RAID is not relevant and IDE will not affect the issue. I haven't tried IDE Mode yet being reluctant to do so until I have a better understanding of whatever the problem could be.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Answer:SATA sockets 1 and 2 OK - SATA sockets 3 and 4 u/s

I couldn't find any documentation on your board(s). (There seems to be a mis-match between your specs and the info in your thread.) Perhaps it's European only and/or OEM only. So, there's no telling what BIOS or controller is installed. The problem could be that ports 1 & 2 are on a separate controller than ports 3 & 4 and that controller is disabled in the BIOS or the drivers haven't been installed.

About all I can suggest at this point is to un-install the DVD driver for the drive that is recognized through Device Manager. Shutdown the PC, disconnect the power (turn off PS AND disconnect cord), wait 10 minutes then install the second DVD. Power up and see if Windows finds new hardware and installs the drivers.

If this doesn't work, you may have to reset CMOS memory. And, you'll have to follow the directions in your user manual for this. Some methods vary widely between PCs.

Since the advent of USB, I have had 3 machines that have USB sockets that don't work. Ones built into cards connected direct to the mother board are OK, but I have had 2 with twin USB on the front, and one on each didn't work, and a monitor with twin USB on the side, one I used but it didn't take long to fail.

A buddy tells me the monitor ones was a power issue, but I don't follow that, as monitors have their own power supply, maybe someone could clarify that? But the ones on the front of PCs, why should one work and not the other?

Is this a general problem, and is there anything I can do physically to fix them?
I guess maybe not on the monitor, as I am not taking it to pieces, unless someone has an alternative suggestion.
As for the ones on the front of PC's, is a soldering iron or something else worth trying?

Small addition to this, speaker and headphone sockets on the front have had similar issues

Answer:Useless USB sockets

One thing you can try is going into control panel, click on system then hardware, then device manager. See if you USB entries show a yellow triangle, if so that shows they have a problem. Now even if they look Ok what I have done in the past is to uninstall the USB controllers, then reboot the machine it will install new ones. Many times drivers for various things get changed or corrupted when you install other programs.

This may be relevant to a recent discussion. I have Vista on my laptop and I have tried to synchronise my Palm PDA through one of the USB sockets. I have the recurring message that it is not recognised. This continues even when the plug is removed. In addition none of the four external sockets now work. I do have a card reader and that seems to be working fine. I have rebooted several times but the messages keeps reappearing.I have been into the device manager where the USB sockets are listed along with others you cannot see. There is one noted as Unknown. It is strange because the whole page in Manager keeps 'collapsing' and reappearing. I have tried to uninstall but cannot do it. I have also tried restoring the system but the dates available are very limited. But I was able to choose a date that was just before the Palm attempt. The attempt to restore failed. I would be glad to know whether this fault is recognised and has a solutionMany thanks

Hi

Hopefully someone will agree on my theory, as hardware is not my favourite side of computers

Anyway, I have this motherboard:

Asus M5A99X EVO:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A99X_EVO/

I currently have this cpu:

AMD Phenom II X6 1050T

Now, I was hoping to play Battlefield 1 (fps game) but my specs are under, and it bottlenecks all the time

So, its time to upgrade. Can't afford a brand new gaming rig, so going for the upgrading options

Now, according to the link from Asus, my board supports AM3+/AM3 (near the bottom of the page, above the picture). The cpu I have now is AM3, but to upgrade can I have any AM3+ cpu?

The reason I ask, is the recommended spec for AMD cpu is AMD FX 8350 Wraith. And that is an AM3+.

If the answer is Yes, I can have this cpu, I'll save the pennies and get one. May not be able to use the Wraith cooler that some have, as my motherboard can be a bit limiting. Found that out when I got the system built, and ended up giving the expensive fan away, as it wouldn't fit.

Thanks

Answer:Sockets and Sprockets

Different sockets are for different CPUís, so you really need to know what processor you are looking for then chose the appropriate socket type, the two you mention, socket A and socket 478 are for AMD 32 bit, and Intel P4 CPUís respectively, (though donít quote me on the P4 bit).

The plastic housing of SATA socket number 1 on my motherboard has broken and the cable won't stay connected. If I plug the system HDD into the second SATA socket I get Disk Boot Failure - no system disk.Until I get a new motherboard, is the only option to plug the SATA system HDD into the IDE socket via a converter, or should it be possible to boot via SATA socket number 2?If I get it working via a SATA-IDE converter will I be able to use SATA socket number 2 for a second non-system HDD to store data?

You should be able to use one of the other SATA sockets by selecting it as the boot source either in BIOS or by pressing F8 during the starting sequence to get to the boot options screen. Select the drive there and your PC should boot.I should add that I know this works on Asus boards but have no experience of others.

Has anyone tried to feed sound through external amp with an earphone socket? Does it work & how ?

Answer:cd/dvd phone sockets (again)

I am assuming you are taking a signal from an earphone socket, into an external amplifier?I have done this when I used to be a Disc Jockey, in the days of vinyl and tape decks... to add a tape deck to my system... the only work round you might need to consider is matching the 'responce' of the signals. Tape descks used a 'flat' responce. Any compedent electronics person, should be able to tell you the impedence differencial between the source and input, if you give them both ratings. It can be 'matched' using simple resistors.

Hi guys

I have lil' college thing to do but I need some info to help me with it.

What kinda socket processors do Pentium 1's use? And what kinda motherboards are those? AT motherboards but what else might I need to consider?

What's the difference between the different type of sockets? Like socket A, Socket 370, etc.

Thanks. Aprreciate any replies.

Answer:Questions on sockets

Pentium boards use Socket 7 or Super 7 sockets. The differance in sockets is the number of pins, the orientation of the processor and cooling among other things. Here are a couple of links that may help you out.

Hello everyone! I have been given a "ECS K7VZA" motherboard and it is a socket 462. I have searched for a processor and found that many sites refer to the socket 462 as socket a. Are these two the same or interchangeable? I have my mind set on an AMD Duron 900MHz, as I am currently running a Pentium 133MHz and I feel that this is more than enough speed for me. Also, the board came with a 64M DIMM. Is this enough RAM or will I need to step it up some? Pricewatch.com has several 900MHz CPUs really cheap,(or are they just that,...cheap?)
Thanks for any input!!

Answer:motherboard & sockets

Yes socket 462 is Socket A, I'd spring for more memory, at least 256, and more if you can afford it.

Question: Dual Sockets

Hello forum members!

Apple power macs are using Server based setups with dual socket intel xeon processors.

So in theory couldn't I buy a dual socket mobo and two identical cpu's and run windows on it, as task manager has set affinity and other features.

Has any moved on to dual sockets for general use and not server based machines in the community?

I have a Dell computer with 4 rear usb ports and 2 front. The 2 front ones work with 2 MP3 players, but will not support my Canon Digital camera, Nano Ipod or Webcam. These all work in rear.I know I can obtain a USB hub to avoid unplugging , however I wondered why there appears to be some incompatability?

Answer:USB sockets - not all work

USB comes in 3 flavours basically you have:USB 1.1, USB 2.0 And USB 2.0 Ultra Fast.If your ports are USB 2 they will read USB 1.1 & USB 2.0 only.A USB hub can be bought for under £10 in ASDA but make sure what speed it is.

Hello,I have just bought a Thermaltake Soprano case.I have fitted all the components ,and have an issue with the front audio leads. The MB I am using is a Shuttle MV43V/VN.The MB has a panel 1 header.Currently the header has jumpers across 5&6 9&10.To connect the lead I must first remove the jumpers. When I connected the lead from the original PC case,I lost the use of the rear sockets, and the AC97 drivers became uninstalled. So,what is the best way to connect the front sockets so that they will work this time. This is what the MB manual says about the panel 1 header....FRONT PANEL MICROPHONE AND LINE OUT HEADER(PANEL1)The header allows users to install auxiliary front microphone and lineout ports.Either the MIC and line out on back panel 1 are available at this time.If you would like to use panel1 header on front panel, please remove all jumpers from panel1 and install the your special Extra mic/line out cable instead.Like I said,I did this and lost all sound and drivers.Any ideas please...Thanks

Question: ADSL Wall Sockets

I am thinking of getting broadband within the next few weeks, I have found a good ISP, but now want to know about connecting the cables into the sockets. I know that if I use microfilters, every phone socket in the house would need one. However, I think a microfilter in every phone socket would look a bit messy, so I was wondering if I could get wall sockets with an ADSL port and a phone port built-in.If I use these, would I need to replace every phone socket with an ADSL/phone socket, just like I would with microfilters. Also, if these joint sockets exist, how much do they cost? Thanks

what is the difference in all these sockets on motherboards such as AMD socket A, socket 754, socket 939, etc??

is the higher the # the faster or something? thanks

Answer:difference in Mobo sockets??

Well socket A is basically a previous generation for the Athlon XP, Durons, Semprons (although Semprons also have Socket 754 now)

The Socket A is also known as Socket 462 because the CPU has 462 pins, Same thing applies to the Socket 754, 939 and 940

Socket 754 = No dual channel support (first thing that pops into my mind, not sure if theres another main differentiating difference)

Socket 939 = Supports everything and will continue to be upgraded by AMD

Socket 940 = Requires ECC and Registered RAM ONLY and again will be phased out just like Socket 754

Of course more pins = more bandwidth = more performance.

So each one has it's own features.

Higher the # the faster......well kinda...you gotta look at the seperate features and whatnot, but generally speaking it's true.

Like I said, more pins = more bandwidth for data to flow through.

That's just a quick run down I'm sure someone else can give you more detail.

My PC has what seems to be a standard motherboard configuration, i.e. height & socket positions. There are three sockets on the motherboard, (on-board), I know are for Speaker, Microphone, and Line In. These are not labeled on my PC.I am using the standard on-board sound card. How do you identify the 3? I put in a line feed from a cassette player, and obviously 1 didn't work, which was the speeaker output. When I connected a speaker to this socket, speakers worked. Not so easy on the other 2 sockets, as both are designed to input sound to the PC. Only thing is, with the cassette line-in, one was louder than the other, and one was clearer than the other. Which is for the microphone, and which for the line in?Thanks.

Answer:Sockets on Sound Card?

Are they colour coded? normal config is speaker line mic working away from the joystick port

Sorry to appear a bit thick, but can someone please educate me in how power is supplied to USB sockets.I have USB docking/charger for a PDA.When I power off the computer by normal means, the computer shuts down, but power remains on the USB docking device ( little light on the front remains on). But, if I then turn off the power switch on the back of the computer for a few seconds the light on the device goes out, and remains out when I put the switch back on.Then remains out until the computer is powered on again. My question really is, is it OK to leave the device on and charging the PDA when the computer is turned off ? If the USB socket is still being supplied from the mains I take it this will be OK, but I fear that with the computer off I might be running down a battery or damaging come component inside the machine.Sorry about this - pretty basic I know - too basic for the books I've looked up to cover.Best regards to allBlott

Answer:Power Supplies to USB Sockets

When you power down your computer, the power supply stays 'live' so that it can detect the on/off switch being operated. The power supply staying live all the time has the side effect (sometimes) of keyboard lights and usb ports staying on. This is perfectly normal.I can see no problems with leaving your PDA charging up through the usb while the computer is off.HTHCtA

I have posted a similar question in the Digital Forum, but suspect that more people visit the Helproom, so I am re-posting it here.My TV has three scart sockets. When I connect a device to one of those sockets (eg digi-box, DVD player etc) I get very occasional break up of the picture or complete freezing of the picture. As the same thing happens whatever I connect and whichever of the three sockets I use and whichever of a number of cables I use, I think that I can rule out a problem with the external device, cable or just one of the sockets. It is as if the TV is occasionally failing to process correctly the information it is receiving through the scart sockets. I know nothing about electronics. Does anyone, therefore, know whether there would be a single component within the TV which would be linked to all three sockets and so which could be causing this problem?

Answer:Television Scart Sockets

I suspect there is a problem with the TV, can you try the devices and cables in another TV just to eliminate them?

Folks,Dad's PC has died terminally, and a new one has been ordered...There is a possibility that in the near future I will build a new PC...I might use his old case. It's an ATX midi tower Evesham circa 2002, and is mechanically well built...It has 2 UBS sockets on the front. These are/were USB1, as per the original machine. Are these actual sockets different to USB2 sockets? That is to say, if I do go ahead and build a new PC using this, with a modern mobo that has USB 2, and I connect from a USB 2 header on the mobo to these sockets will they work at USB 2, or is there something about them that makes them inherently USB1?Sockets on the front is essential, so if they'll stay as USB1 then I won't use it... (I'm only trying to save the price of a case, and I'll buy a new PSU anyway)Thanks in advance,Regards,Simsy

I am upgrading my PC. New Motherboard, Graphics card, new SATA DVD drive, etc. I purchased some Molex to SATA voltage adaptors. I notice the only SATA voltage source on the Power Supply has one SATA plug. It has 5 wires going to it. The molex adaptors have only 4! the difference is an orange wire, 3volts. I had a problem setting up the SATA Hard drive, using the 4 pin Molex, when I changed it over to the 5 pin from the power supply all was OK. The SATA DVD is using the adaptor and is OK.Question is; do SATA drives require a 5 pin voltage source. Many thanks for your help.Brian

Answer:SATA plugs and sockets on PC

Adapters that can convert a 4-pin Molex connector to a SATA power connector exist. However, because the 4-pin Molex connectors do not provide 3.3 V power, these adapters provide only 5 V and 12 V power and leave the 3.3 V lines unconnected. This precludes the use of such adapters with drives that require 3.3 V power. Some 4-pin Molex to SATA power connectors have electronics included in the connector to also provide the 3.3 V power. Understanding this, drive manufacturers have largely left the 3.3 V power lines unused.Above is an extract from ... click here

I'm not sure if this is the case - does anyone know? If so is there any means of enabling as I much prefer to listen to headphones via these sockets - or at least I did on my last PC.

I think it's the norm now for these sockets not to work. The last one that worked for me was about five years ago on a CD ROM since then, nothing.I've just tried the sockets on the machines in my studio here. Hello,

I just got a DFI Lanparty UT NF4 DR Expert, with a 3800+(2.0GHZ) Dual Core running at 2.5 GHZ

Everything is great.. I have many storage drives.. and need speed..

Will connecting 2 lan cables to my computer improve speed? how can I set up my computer to send files throu both gigabit connections or migabit connections!

Answer:2 Network Sockets? more speed?

Your internet connection is most likely hundreds of times slower than your LAN port, so no point in trying to improve your internet speeds.

Also, your hard drives can fill maybe 60-70% of gigabit ethernet (~70-80MB/s sustained transfers vs. ~100MB/s of GBE), so you won't gain anything when transferring files over the local network either.

Problem:

Dual boot system win98SE/XP Pro release 1

Got a trojan on the XP boot and tried to clean it. Followed instructions on deleting trojan including deleting CLSID files in the registry. I think I may have deleted some CLSID folders as well. Now when I launch any browser it does not connect. The modem is fine as is the wirless router (on the laptop right now)

When I boot in win98SE I have no problem on the net.

I suspect I screwed something up in the registry when deleting files. I talked to adelphia tech support, went through all the normal steps and nothing, they then tell me it sounds like the sockets need rebuilt but they can't/won't instruct me on that...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Answer:Rebuilding sockets in the registry???

Its hard to know what you have deleted. But try this first. It may not fix the problem, but it is a simple repair that wont hurt anything if nothing is wrong.

Repair Winsock instructions
Download WinsockFix to some permanent directory, like c:/program files/winsockfix/, doubleclick it, click Fix.

I am not 100% sure how to 'aim' it at the WinXP winsock. Write down any messages.

Question: SATA power sockets

Have a new build with a Corsair HX 650 (superb device from every respect) and need to connect two 120 extra fans.

Now I don't want to us the two foot long SATA to Molex cable because it would untidy if not hazardous lying around in the case.

I can get a SATA to Molex adaptor then plug a fan lead (with a splitter) into it to drive the two fans from that one adaptor and I cannot find out if the SATA outlet will drive the two 120 fans.

Will I have enough grunt from the one SATA outlet to drive the two fans as the SATA cables for the drives I can see can have up to four drives on one cable if one so wished.

Have contacted Corsair and to cut a very long story short - am none the wiser.

Otherwise it means using two SATA outlets hence double the other components to do what I want to do.

Hey guys so i'm looking at processors for an old computer

The processor is an Intel Pentium 4 530

The socket on it is PLGA 775 according to the Intel website and also supports PPGA 478

I'm looking to buy a processor to replace it but I don't understand fully how the sockets work

My main question is if I bought a processor with the socket LGA 775 would it be compatible with PLGA 775 socket on the motherboard

I'm looking at a powerful but cheap processor for the socket which it's an Intel Core Duo and would like to buy it to replace the Pentium 4 but want to make sure it's compatible
Thanks

Answer:Intel Processors sockets

I would make sure you know EXACTLY what motherboard you have (incl. Rev version) and go to the mfg's website and see what CPU's they say are compatible, it's more then socket compatibility. Some boards will only handle CPU's up to a certain speed or wattage, so you have to be careful. The motherboard determines the CPU and RAM, so use the motherboard docs as your "bible" and you should be OK.

I've been trying to find an Athlon64 3700 for my socket754 motherboard for ages and I assumed it was the best I could fit as 3700 is the last Athlon64 released to fit 754 (as far as i'm aware.)

But I've seen one or two people on ebay selling Athlon64 Mobile chips for Socket754 as high as 4000 and they have stated that they would work in a regular Socket754 desktop aswell as a laptop. If this is true then I'd rather have one of them but I don't want to buy a 'Mobile' cpu if it doesn't work.
Anyone know if these chips truly can work in both? I know the majority of laptop and desktop components aren't compatible but those are for obvious size reasons, this is a processor...

Okay, I'll keep this brief.

Vista 64-bit. Everything up to date. Everything works perfectly for hours, and hours. Then all of a sudden, my internet will partially stop working.

Now, it's odd because it doesn't disconnect me from anything. It seems to no longer open any sockets. For instance, if I'm browsing the [H] forums, they'll work fine so long as I keep browsing. MSN won't disconnect me. IRC keeps working.

Hell, it happened the other day while I was playing WoW and everything worked fine.

However, if I try to access a new webpage, sign on to MSN, log on to another IRC server, even try to ping somewhere, it fails untill I restart.

Resetting the router, disabling/renabling the connection, zip. A reboot always fixes it, and it will work for hours on end again, before it randomly breaks once more.

Any ideas, chaps?

EDIT: Upon further investigation it appears that ICS is the cause of it - However, I still wouldn't mind knowing if anyone has a solution, cheers!
