I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The system requirements for InDesign CS2 specify Pentium II or 4 (no processor speed identified), Windows 2000SP2 or XP, 256 MB RAM min.

The system requirements for InDesign CS3 specify Pentium 4 (no processor speed identified), Windows XPSP2, 256 MB RAM min.

Interestingly, the box for CS2 also specifies 256 kb L2 cache min.

I have the opportunity to buy a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a Pentium M processor (1.5 Ghz), 512 MB RAM, Windows XP/Pro.

I checked the specs of the Pentium M processor on the Intel website, but for this product, cache is specified differently (not as L2). There are 3 different models of 1.5 Ghz M processors, with cache specified at either 1 or 2 MB.

So, my question is:

What does the M cach spec mean, and is it equivalent to L2, or, if not, will the M cach spec work as well as the more traditional L2 cache for an application such as InDesign?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Pentium III vs Pentium 4 vs Pentium M and Adobe InDesign

Sorry I cannot tell you what this M thing stands for...To be honest I have never seen something like that before...But I can tell you that all Pentium M CPUs have -as you already said- 1m to 2mb of L2 cache. But do not bother checking all this cache stuff, in my opinion you should check for a machine with more Ram and a better CPU. I believe it will suit better your needs. I have seen a lot of cheap laptops with 1gb of RAM and Core Duo or Core 2 Duo CPUs. By the way all Core 2 CPUs have at least 2mb of cache.

I've been having this doubt, what processor would actually be faster for gaming, and why not, overall performance ?

Core duo 1.8ghz
pentium D 3.2ghz
pentium 4 HT 3.0ghz

Lets see those replies

Answer:Whats faster for gaming? Core duo 1.8ghz, pentium D 3.2ghz or pentium 4 HT 3.0ghz

Core 2 Duo wins. It's a much more efficient processor, so even at 1.86ghz, it will be faster than a 3.2 pentium d.

Hi guys.

I'm thinking of upgrading my Pentium 4 660 3.60GHz processor to a Pentium Dual core E6800 3.33GHz.
Would there actually be any point in changing CPU or would it actually improve performance significantly? Also would my system be able to handle the CPU itself or not?

My system specs are as follws:
Operating System - XP Home Edition SP3
Current CPU - Intel Pentium 4 3.60GHz
Motherboard - GA-8I915PM-FS
ROM - 1x230 GB
RAM - 2GB PNY DIMM DDR 400Mhz PC3200
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

If you need any other info then please just ask me and I'll let you know.
Hope someone can help please. Thank you.

Answer:Pentium 4 3.60GHz upgrading to Pentium Dual Core E6800 3.33GHz

I'm absolutely certain you won't be able to do that, period. That newer Pentium Dual Core is not in any way, backwards compatible with your motherboard.

Well, it is the same socket. So, it would go in, but it surely won't run. Intel 915 chipset is 32 bit only. Thus, you couldn't even go forward to Cedar Mill core P-4s, which are 64 bit.

Just want to let everyone know (for useful future information).  That I finally upgraded a Dell E510 I had from a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz Prescott HT to a Pentium D 3.4 GHz.  And the improvements were remarkable.  Computer specs were 4 GB of RAM,  ATI 512 MB 4670.  With that and the Pentium 4, I was unable to play StarCraft II with detailed graphics.  There was lag, and 15-20 FPS was considered smooth.  Now, FPS can get as high as 60 FPS when nothing is going on or small battles and 25+ FPS while big battles (4 versus 4).  And that is with more detailed shaders and better textures and models.  My other games run much smoother as well.
The exact model I got was a Pentium D 945 3.4 GHz, LGA 775, Model - SL9QQ.  Full information is in the link below.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=220780139326&si=Rhrx%252BYbVag6hV8eXOkNxXYMPSvI%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT
I thought this might be useful in the future for people trying to figure out if this is worth it.  And it is.  You can find one on eBay for less than 40 American Dollars with shipping.  And most sellers offer DOA warranty, so you probably will not get ripped off.  I even saw some sellers offer 60 day warranty.   Just keep in mind these are used and are not new, but they are working fine, and the one I got was used but in perfect condition.  Plus, the... Congrats on the successful upgrade.
I too "upgraded" my E510 - I built a new PC with a Q6600 CPU
Actually my E510 was just an "interim" PC for a couple of years.  As I got into PC recording I found out I needed more than what the E510 could provide, even with upgrading more than I did (I upgraded the CPU from the original D805 to a D925) as whatever I did, it was still "old technology".   As that was a couple of years ago, and now even my Q6600 is "old technology".

If yes can you tell me how? If no, thanks for your time.

I thank you all for you time.

Answer:Upgrade the processor of Portege 3110ct from Pentium II to Pentium III

No, it?s ABSOLUTELY NOT POSSIBLE.

The pentium 2 architecture is completely and totally DIFFERENT so I think its better for you to buy another machine than thinking about this.

It?s absolutely impossible and thats the fact.

Hello,

What would happen if I used a Pentium 4 heatsink/fan up to 2.8GHZ with a CPU over 2.8ghz.

Thanks,
Mike

Answer:Pentium 4 2.8GHz heatsink/fan with Pentium 4 3GHz+ CPU

Most likely your CPU temp would be higher than it should be if you had a correctly rated HSF for the CPU speed you were using.

plus if the CPU temp went above the cut off point for thermal throttling on the CPU then your CPUs mhz whould be reduced to allow adequate cooling of the CPU... thus some system slowdown, but no destroying the CPU, may see some software glitches.. dependant on what the temps where.

I'm looking to buy a Dell D510. The price is right and I can get on CHEAP with a $400 discount code I have. My delima is which CPU to get in it. Should I get the P4 650 3.4GHZ with HT technology or should I get it with what they recomend and is cheaper the Pentium D820 2.8 Dual Core technology. I don't do a whole lot of gaming on a PC since I have an XBOX 360 but if I had the power I may do more. I do some multimedia stuff too. I have read conflicting reports on both CPUs on the internet. The Pentium D of coarse shines with multitasking. I don't know a whole lot at this stage about CPUs. I would appreciate any input on this.

Thanks in advance!

Don

Answer:Which CPU? Pentium 4 650 (3.4GHZ) 0r Pentium D820 (2.8GZH)

the p4 definately, if you look at this benchmark it is clear that the P4 owns in "almost" anything except for a few benchmarks and of couse the multitasking, I don't think dual core is really being utilized to it's full extent right now. It is also worth noting that AMD has the edge in gaming right now, and they are cheap, just somethign to consider, Hp(or compaq) makes good budget PCs if you want a pc with an AMD.notice the 3200+, one of AMDs cheaper CPUs owned both intel chips

Hey guys,

I have a Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 with HT Technology (3GHz) and 2MB cache. Would I be able to replace my current mobo (I have a dell dimension e310 if it that helps any) with Newegg.com - ASUS P5GC-MX (R2.02) LGA 775 Intel 945GC Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail Reason being, I just ordered Newegg.com - MSI NX8600GT-T2D256E OC GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail, which won't fit into my current mobo (no PCI E- x16 slot, just a PCI E- x1). Would Newegg.com - Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail be a good amount of ram to put into that new mobo?

Finally, would Newegg.com - COOLMAX V-500 ATX 500W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, CSA, FCC, TUV - Retail be a good replacement power supply?

Answer:Pentium 4 HT processor on a regular Pentium 4 Mobo?

Hey drwho1986
I think that motherboard will do just fine. Just note, that you will have to reinstall a fresh copy Windows. Or just use your Dell's cd key.

2GB is all you need, unless you are into RAM hungry programs. Such as Adobe editiing software, or AutoCAD.

Coolmax is generally a no no, in Ste's power supply guide:
http://www.techist.com/forums/f76/up...-guide-137927/

I would suggest the FSP (Fortron Source) power supply instead. They are highly reliable, for budget builds. Here is the link:

Hi,
I have a computer purchased back in '98 running a Pentium II 300 mghrtz chip. I recently purchased a Pentium II 450 and installed it, however the computer still is only running at 300. I know that jumpers and/or bus speeds need to be changed, but I don't know how. I looked all through the BIOS and can't find anything that refers to bus speed. I have changed the jumpers around but the system runs at 300 no matter what the jumpers are set at. The motherboard is a M6TLC, and I have the manual, but cannot seem to find out how to change the bus speed. There are jumper setting diagrams, but none that refer to a 450 mghrtz processor, and changing them does nothing anyway.
I wanted to up the speed on this old machine, put in a new bigger hard drive, put WINxp (it now runs 98se) on it and use it for backups. I'm beginning to think that this processor upgrade can't be done, but any advice would surely be appreciated.
Thanks,
TennisWitch

Also what would you pay for this system:

17" monitor
16 mb rage 3d video card

OK this was a quick thought but if I was to swap my Pentium 4 motherboard, processor and ram with my Pentium 3 motherboard, processor and ram would I have to do a reinstall on both systems. So I would put the pentium 4 bundle in where the pentium 3 bundle was and vice versa, if you get me???

Answer:Pentium 4 motherboard and processor to replace Pentium 3

Why not just swap hard drives between the two systems, as it should have the same end effect? This would probably be enough at one time for XP to ask for activation again, not mentioning the fact of drivers not being the same, and possible boot issues.

i have dell laptop d600 and its having Intel pentium M processor and now i am changing the processor in to pentium centrino but still am getting the same bios screen?Pls suggest what shall i do next

Answer:upgrading pentium m to pentium centrino

"i am changing the processor in to pentium centrino"Centrino is NOT a processor, it's the name of a specific Intel hardware package. The processor used in the Centrino package is the Pentium M. Which processor are you attempting to install? And which processor did you remove? Hopefully you're not confusing Centrino & Celeron because a Celeron would be a downgrade, not an upgrade. What do you expect to gain by swapping processors anyway? The processor speed varies under load so unless you're really pushing your laptop to it's limit, you'll probably never notice any difference in performance"Centrino is not a processor. Rather in order for a laptop computer to be called "Centrino", it required the new Pentium M processor, an Intel 855 chipset, and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 (802.11b) or Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g) network card."http://www.powernotebooks.com/artic...

Please don't laugh, but I am still using a Pentium 1 (233MMX) machine as my main everyday computer (running Win98SE). I have made several attempts to upgrade to P2 and P3 over the years, but each time I have had to go back, because the P1 always seemed much faster online (dial-up), even when the upgrade was to a machine running identical software and the same external modem.

The P1 is rapidly dying, and less and less of its software is working, so I have set up a Pentium 3 with Win 2000 Pro and all software installed. I did careful tests this time, checking download speeds on zip and jpg files (to check actual speed) and large html-only files (to check compression), and found the Pentium 3 to be as good as, or a bit faster than the P1.

I made the change-over yesterday, but as soon as I go to eBay pages, for example, it is "watching paint dry" time! In every test (clearing the cache between each one) the P3 is 25% to 95% SLOWER than the old machine. I've checked and double-checked that all relevant settings are the same, and tried every tweak I can find, but no matter what I do, the old machine is ALWAYS faster on real-world web pages. My browser is SeaMonkey on both machines, though on previous attempted upgrades it would have been Internet Explorer.

This makes absolutely no sense to me, but unless I can find out what the problem is, I am just going to have to stick to the Pentium 1, for online use at least. Can anyone suggest a rational explanati... Read more

Answer:Why is a Pentium 1 faster than Pentium 3 online?

The Internet speed is not governed by your computer
It is changed only by the Modem connection and your Server.

I suspect the differences were due to the newer system caching more in system bios (or in Windows) this copying process may quicken (or slow down) your Internet pages from displaying.

Also you cannot get a true reading, as both computers are too different.
There could be lots of other reasons (Firewall; Antivirus the list goes on)

By the way lots of Linux servers (firewall) use P1

Stick with what you have now if its a 3.6Ghz processor. But are you sure its socket 478 and not 775?

If the 3.2Ghz EE is very, very cheap or free then it would give you slightly better performance but not worth the retail price of the EE.

what are the main differences between the pentium 4 M processors and the Pentium M (yeah.. im laptop shopping for college)

I can buy a pentium 4 M processor thats faster then the M series even goes.. for cheaper

is there a big battery life difference or something?

Answer:difference in pentium 4M vs. pentium M?

The architecture is completely different. The PM uses a dual core design. Not only does it consume a lot less power and generate a lot less heat, it performs much better than a comprably clocked P4.

P4M's are normal P4's that have a built in throttling "feature" that reduces battery consumption and heat (a normal P4 has a battery life of an hour or so, IIRC) -- and also severely cramps performance.

If you're buying a new laptop, PM is much, much better than the P4M. I'd sooner buy a P3 or Celeron laptop than any P4 variant.

If you can, try to get a laptop with the Centrino logo. Centrino combines three elements: a Pentium M processor, the Centrino chipset that's designed to work with the Pentium M, and a on-board wireless netowrk card.

I have a working pentium 4 running xp but when I change The HD via IDE Cable to the pentium 3 tower it doesn't want to boot, I only get the flashing cursor on lft top screen, but when I put back on Pentium 4 tower it works, The question comes because I want to install XP on a new Hd but the pentium 3 doesnt want to boot from cd even changing the BIOS boot set up to cd/rom first.Any help or Sugestions Please! I just don't want to waste my time conecting the new hd on the p4 installing xp and then for it not to work on the p3.

Answer:Xp hd on pentium 4 won't boot on a pentium 3

Your XP installation is configured to the P4 system & is not transferrable to the P3 system, that's why it won't boot. If you want to pre-install XP on the P4 system & then transfer it to the P3 system, you will still need to do a "repair installation" after the drive swap. It would be better to just do a clean install in the P3 system. Either way you do it, you will need to have a working CD/DVD drive in the P3 system.

My friend has a Pentium M at 1.4ghz (laptop) and Doom 3 runs smoothly on it at high resolution... I'm a little confused... the min requirements says 1.5ghz on Doom3. Pentium M's use a 10 stage process, like AMD processors. A 1.4 ghz pentium mobile would have the peformance of lets say, a 2.2GHZ p4.

Their artechture is very alike AMD.

You will need to search for benchmarks to properly be able to compare it to normal CPU's

I don't know if this question has been answered here or not because the words are a little difficult to do specific searches for. I am thinking of making for myself a file server. It's going to be cheap because it's main purpose is the processing of files from a centralized location. As such, I know I want processing power; but, I know I don't need a Core. As such, I'm sticking with a Pentium. I got the choice narrowed down to a Pentium Dual-Core. But, as I was researching the Pentium, I found out that the Dual-Core was re-branded to just a Pentium with dual-core features. My main question is is there a difference between the Pentium Dual-Core and the Pentium with dual-core features? I'm choosing between an ASUS P5G41C-M LX and a P5KPL-AM EPU. I wouldn't have gotten confused except that I'm buying these off of NewEgg and one motherboard has the Dual-Core capitalized while the other has the dual-core in lower cased letters.

AMD is the clear choice if you're on a budget, as newer Pentium 4 chips are hideously overpriced. However, you do not specify what you mainly use your PC for, and this may be a serious factor in deciding between AMD or Intel.

I have an IBM P2 with 64 mb ram and 3 gigs HD on which I run AOL7,Word 2000 and 3 instant messenger accounts. yahoo,Aol instant messenger and MSN with the famous Millenium Edition as the operating system. I have noticed that the Hard drive is always working and as a result the machine is slow. Questions 1. Is ME too much for a p2 system? Is the ram too small (Tried to upgrade but m/c wont allow it)? Is the HD shot or on the way out ? I have cleaned up the HD and defragged which helps for a little bit. What do you think folks?Pavel

Answer:Pentium two, Run ME ?

64 Mbytes is enough, and 3 Gbytes is enough hard drive space. I would suspect that AOL7 is more likely to be causing problems than Windows ME. Try switching to Internet Explorer or Opera and see if it makes any difference. Check the minimum system requirements for the programs you are running. AOL may specify at least 64 Mbytes and recommend 128 Mbytes. If so, that is the cause of all the page file swapping. If you can't increase your RAM, reduce the workload.

A friend of mine has an old P2 running Win XP SP2. Her HDD is only 9Gb and is way too small for anything. On opening the PC I find there are 2 X 40 wire IDE cables with a single connector on either end, one going to the HDD and the other to the DVD Rom. I change either 1 to an 80 wire 3 connector cable, all OK. Now I attach another good HDD as a slave, the PC won't boot. Yes, I have the jumpers set right, I triple checked. I refit the old cables, remove the DVD and plug in a 160GB drive and the system boots. I replace the DVD and change the old 9GB HDD for a new 160GB, system starts up but when I try to install XP it says the Drive is 40Gb. I'm on my other computer now (AMD ) because the Pentium 2 did something weird.

When I try to start the computer up it will turn on and lights go on, but then it just kinda sits there, and nothing comes up on the screen. The odd time I will get something on the screen, but the computer freezes soon thereafter.

All of this was caused by my computer freezing once, and then attempting to restart it for the third day now. I think it died.

I'm running Windows XP on this with 128mb of RAM.

Question: AMD or Pentium 4?

I need to buy a new computer so I'll use one of the system configurators on a website. I only need a motherboard, a processor, a hardrive (40 or 80 GB), 512 DDR RAM, geForce 4 MX 440 128MB 8x DDR, and a case with 400watt PS. I will use the computer for gaming, graphics (photoshop...), flash, and other things. I want the price 450 USD or lower. I can't decide if I will get an AMD or a Pentium 4. They both have good and bad sides: pentiums seem faster (more catche mem, faster FSB and all that), and the AMD's are cheaper. Which processor would be the faster for my budget? (that $450 dollars includes the other components mentioned above)

Thanx

Answer:AMD or Pentium 4?

get an athlon they are cheaper fpr the same performance. cause ur on a budget. ex. athlon xp 2200 is about the speed of a p4 2.2 ghz or so.

Which is better for gaming, The pentium 4 on .13 micron technology or the pentium 4 on .09 micron technology? I dont want to hear about AMDs in this post, just about my question?

Andrew Davis

Answer:Pentium 4

The .09 micron P4 run a lot hotter and I know they are better at video editing, but when it comes to games they're pretty much even. I would choose the Northwood because of its lower power consumption alone.

does anyone know what max the p4 3.06 will clock upto without any additional fans?????

Answer:Pentium 4 HELP!!!!!????

the P4 itself has a locked clock multiplier you will only be able to ramp up the fsb and the core voltage, the benefit you will see with a 3.06 will be negligable and not worth the risk, you shouldnt overclock without a utility that measures your temperatures so that you can see when the temperature is reaching a danger level, extra fans are about 10 quid ,a new 3.06 is how much?

I wouldnt do that. You might get away with windows 2000 pro. You should have atleast 300mhz and 128mb ram to have XP. I ran it on that comptuer once and it was slow very slow lol. So I put windows 2000 pro on it. Worked good.

Is the "HT" technology in the pentium 4's really worth it? It's supposed to help multitasking, which my computer can't handle. I have a celeron at 1.8 with 384 megs of ram, but it just can't handle enough things at once. I think the motherboard socket is 478... should i go with a regular pentium 4, athlon or the HT. What I really want is a media center pc... but those are little pricey, esspecially because I have the optical drives, the hard drives, sound card and memory that I want, I would be buying a lot of extras.

Answer:Which pentium to get?

ht. I dont see any difference between no ht and ht. And i am a intel freak. But i dont care what benchmarks or people show/say intel is just as good as multi tasking as amd. Ht really doesn't cost you anymore so go ahead make sure it has a 800fsb on it though. reason your celly dont multi task so well is because of 128k of cache low clock speed and low 400fsb. My intel 3ghz 800fsb 512cache Ht runs smooth as a cat and can have almost 5 games open at once without any troubles and no lag. intel 2.6c is the sweet spot right now for cpus

U are technically right amd 2800 = P4 2.8 etc, the difference is that Amds are better with multytasking - it will better handle more programs (then pentium) at once. An amd 3000 which is i think 2.0 ghz will work same (or even better in some cases) then P4 3.0 ghz

whats that?
i know its on most good computers....but wat does it do?
i've tried readin it in term comp book, but the definition was too much for someone who doesnt know much abt computer terms like me...........

Answer:pentium 4?

pentium 4 is the newest of intel's processors. the processor is the chip in the computer that does all the calculating and processing, kind of like the human brain does the thinking for a person. so the processor is simply the brain of the computer. and yes the pentium 4 is good in computers, because it is one of the newest, it is one of the fastest, and faster is better, when you want to get things done.

Question: low end pentium 3

i have a home built pc. i put it together myself and now i am not satisfied. i have a 433 pentium 3, but i had to get an adaptor to make the processor fit into my motherboard. im pretty sure that the motherboard was only set up for a pentium 2, but i dont know off hand what it is. i know that i had to update the bios. i was wonderin what it would take for you all to tell me if i can upgrade to atleast a low end pentium 4.

Answer:low end pentium 3

Please tell us the make/model of your motherboard.

Also, can you give a link of this adapter you are using?

My first thoughts are, you may want to save up the cash and invest in a new motherboard that is designed for a P4 processor. If your current one is only meant for a P2, even if you use an adapter, you won't be able to use the CPU's full potential. I am assuming that this adapter will only make it fit in your board, but I imagine with all the bottlenecks in your system, the price of a P4 would be a waste of money on your system.

Question: Pentium M

What seperates Pent. M from Pent. 4?

I read that Pent. M will be moving from laptops to desktops...what kind of changes can we see in desktop performance?

Answer:Pentium M

Since nobody else tackled this one, briefly:

Pentium M is a further development of the Pentium 3 architecture.

Pentium 4 is a entirely separate branch of development centered around the "NetBurst" architecture (if I recall the name correctly).

Pentium M has more IPC (instructions per clock) than the Pentium 4, but it runs at a lower clock speed. It also has a shorter pipeline and thus there is less of a penalty for branch misprediction and cache misses.

well to start off i would like to know which processor should i go for athlon or pentium. and also i would like to know the affinities that exist between the processor and graphics card. ie which cpu/gpu would be more suitable. like athlon/ati or pentium/nvidia or whatever.

thanks in advance for help

Answer:amd or pentium

Quote:

athlon or pentium.

Athlon is a brand of chip, AMD is the maker. If you want a budget system for gaming then I suggest getting something like the 35w 2400+ XP-M if you're intereseted in overclocking and a good suitable OC'ing board like the ABit NF7-S v2 it's a very popular combo, either that CPU or the 2600+ XP-M which are mobile chips, but they are Socket A and will fit in a desktop socket A mother board, They have great overclockability and it's easy to get them to 3200+ XP speeds and past or at the very least give you a 400FSB.

As far as what card goes with what processor, well it really doesn't matter, the cards made to go with either system so you can't really say nvidia goes with amd and ati goes with intel or anything like that. Personally I like nvidia and right now think they are on top of their game with the eVGA brand 6800GT 256mb, you can OC that up to and past 6800Ultra speeds.

For the most part people generally agree, AMD = Gaming, Intel = applications because AMD performs more cycles per clock than Intel due to short stocky pipelines whereas Intels are huge in comparison.

Question: AMD or Pentium?

Hey guys, i was wanting to build a new pc and i want to use it for light gaming and video editing and movie watching. Now i was looking at the dual cores and that is what i want to get. But i had a few choices. I could get the Core 2 Duo, the Pentium D, or the Athlon 64 X2. I am on a tight buget of under $200 so i ruled out the Core 2 Duo. Besides it would have been overkill for what i wanted. So i narrowed it down to the Pentium D 915 2.8 Ghz seen here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116258

or the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 Ghz seen here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819103068

Now i have heard that AMD is better for gaming but i am doing low-end gaming like battlefield 1942 so think that either would suffice. Now i was leaning towards the AMD because of the price but i am not sure. Also i do not get the fsb on the AMD. Is it 1000 because if it is that is very high and seems like it would be vary fast. So just tell me which of those two you think are better or what i should get but neither can go above $10 more than they are now cause u am on a tight budget. Thanks.

Hi, what will a Pentium M 1.73GHz run at when compared with a P4 desktop CPU? A game I want to run has recommended spec of 2GHz CPU but that will obviously be a desktop CPU.

Thanks.
Gareth.

Answer:Pentium M

The "M" only shows that it is a "mobile" processor, versus a desktop's CPU, which does not have the "M" (and can be upgraded.)

If your game "recommends" a 2ghz CPU, it is still possible that the game may run on a 1.73ghz processor (but slower, of course), but I would check the other requirements, such as RAM and video card as well.

Hi, just got a Pentium III 600EB (133) Slot 1 off E-Bay for my GA-6BXC mobo, plugged it in but nothing happens!

I set the dips/jumpers to Turbo (above normal 100Mhz) nothing! Unlike the PII it has no fan, just a shiny heatsink (which got slightly bent in the post) and just seems to sit in the mobo slot without being secured by the side clip supports.

Stuck the old Pentium II back in and even with the (completely wrong) PIII settings it comes to life.

The manual suggests it should work - (although a member here has previously posted that it only goes to 550Mhz...)

Have i just bought a broken CPU? Maybe a new mobo would do it?

Question: Pentium D

Hey, i have quite a bit of knowledge about the Pentium D, that is is a Dual core and im eyeing off the 830 which is the 3Ghz because there is a major price difference between the 3ghz and the 3.2ghz and i understand all of the speedstep technology etc and i really like the sound of this processor. One thing i do want to know is that if it is 3Ghz per core or is it 3Ghz overall (meaning 1.5Ghz per core) because my friend just built a computer with an AMD Athlon X2 3800+ which is 2ghz PER CORE and he said it was awesome to run and it is only about $50 more so i wanted to know because i dont know much about AMD and i would rather stick with Intel but if this amd is going to be better, im just going to go for it. I understand that AMD uses the old DDR1 ram but is that really an issue? apparantly they might be releasing processors that support the new ram but i predict that they will be pricey. i also thought because the Pentium D requires something around the 945 chipset that it would be a powerful processor but the amd doesnt really require a more powerful motherboard.

Thankyou

Simple question. I think.

Given the choice to upgrade to either, which is better/faster etc. :
Pentium D or Pentium 4?

Answer:Is Pentium D > Pentium 4?

Pentium D just means Dual core.
If you aren't running multiple threads, you should stick with the P4 just to save money.

is the 940 worth the extra $40 for the .2 Ghz? or is there no noticable difference between the two?

Answer:Pentium D 930 or 940?

Make sure you look af the cheaper OEM versions if you don't want the stock Intel H.S.F.

Yes, i'd say the 940 is the "price break" model at the moment, and it is noticeably faster (in tests at least).
What's $40 these days........
