Laptop key busted

Question: Laptop key busted

My mother's got a HP-Pavilion dv-1000 laptop. Our kitten somehow managed to pry off the "2" key, and one of the tabs is busted on it. Can't get it back on. Unfortunately, our warantee company defrauded us and refuses to repair it, claiming their insurance was only for desktops, even though it's rather clear that it's covered in the contract. (They are refunding 90% of the warranty costs.)Now, we need to buy a new keyboard for that laptop, and we don't have a clue how. Anyone know how? Nothing much came up on Google, just people complaining about their broken keyboards.

Preferred Solution: Laptop key busted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hey ho folks/has anyone got any ideas on how much a second hand 15 "screen for a toshiba laptop will cost and where i mite get one from.come to think of it how much for a new one

Answer:busted laptop screen

Be prepared for a cost (without fitting) which will probably be well over half the cost of a new laptop........... You may also have to search for a supplier. It is not an off-the-shelf item from a mail order outlet............Its a hard life!

I have an old busted laptop which has only two uses: the hard drive, and I *think* the Windows XP Registration Key (the little labels glued to the bottom).

Scenario: I have a CD of Windows XP Home Edition
The laptop is XP Pro.

Could I install the Home edition and use the Key off the lappie? Will it even work? If not, if I wanted to buy a boxed copy of XP Pro, would I be able to install it on two computers, using the second key off the bottom of the lappie on the second install?

I sure hope this hasn't been asked a million times.

Answer:XP Product Key from Busted Laptop - Keep It?

Wie gehts! If the key was meant for pro - it won't work. You will probably need to find an OEM XP Pro CD - and what ever service pack it lists on the label - the CD will need to match

I have a Toshiba laptop that has 4 input/output audio jacks on the front of the chassis. (Line out, etc). The I had a 1/8" tip and ring terminating in a red and white RCA. I used this cord to take the output from my laptop and route it through my PA. While sitting down on day, my knee hit the 1/8" jack and snapped it off, leaving part of it still in the jack. I have worked on computers all my life, but have never built, repaired, etc laptops. I have tried using micro pliers to remove the tip, but can't get it out. And I DON'T want to take it to Worst Buys, where I bought it. Any suggestions, these little PC speakers are killing me.

As always thanx for any help

Answer:Busted laptop audio jack

On these connections there can be a small spring whitch clicks in place - not a great force but just to keep it in and not fall out - it also forms part of the mute switch - at lease that how they where set up on hifis etc many many years ago

you can see an example of it here
http://www.europe-audio.com/img/Data/HQ/jc-115.gif

so when you have the pliers on it - you will need to use a bit of force to pull back over the spring...

Apparently he forgot it was plugged into to the ac adaptor and walked off with it and fried the inside ac connection. I took it all apart and the ac connection had actually melted (it looks like a little toaster). It appears that it fried sometime back and he just sort of did the final straw.

A guy on ebay sells the part $3.99 plus shipping, but is this a common part I can get at radio shack or at a computer store? Hard to install?

Thanks.

So I let my sister use my Ideapad Z500 while I was away and she fell on it. Now, the problem that you can observe is that when you turn on the computer there is a crack that goes from top to bottom. I tried to see if the glass is broken, but you can't feel the crack by touch so the display is busted. Now the question is: Can I repair the Display or do I have to buy another laptop?

Answer:Can I repair my laptop if the display is busted?

hi sashanein,

From your description, it looks like the liquid crystals has been shattered inside the LED panel. If the other components are still operational then you can still repair the display by doing the following:

1. Order a compatible LCD panel
   - Link to picture (15" panel - page 100 of the HMM)
   - Sample item

2. Follow the Z500 Video Disassembly (see FRU Videos)

I have a Toshiba Satelitte 1800 and it seems that the plug on the back of it to which I plug in my power cable is not working.I have a few questions, so any answers greatly appreciated. Are there any sites available with information on "getting inside" these laptops? I'd like to see if the connection was loose and I could just reconnect it.How much would it cost for Toshiba to fix the power supply? Are there any other power options available, ie. a method of charging a battery - putting it in the laptop, and then charging it back up, and putting it back in (externally charging the battery because the inbuilt method of the laptop of course doesn't work). If anyone has any other information it'll be appreciated, thanks.

(Before I get started, know that I DO have the passwords for the encrypted data, I just can't figure out how to get at it.)
I'm trying to recover data from a Toshiba 250GB HDD that came from an "IBUYPOWER" model "HL90" laptop. The screen is broke to the point that you can only view what is on the left and right half inches on the screen and I cannot get either of the HDMI/VGA video out ports to work. It is for a friend so I do not know what version of Windows Vista he has.
I tried booting from the hard drive on another computer but I'm assuming it's an OEM version of windows since it never logs on but keeps on restarting. I tried accessing the HDD from windows 8.1 but it says the drive cannot be accessed due to incorrect parameters. I then booted up my computer using Ubuntu and was able to access all of his unencrypted data. My friend said that on his desktop there was a shortcut to a "Personal Safe" which is what encrypted his data. From my online searches I have found out it is a common program on Sager laptops which is part of a "Protector Suite SQL". Through linux I entered the desktop folder but discovered no such program/shortcut (although I could find the Protector Suite folder.) Does anyone know of a way for me to access the data or is it a best bet just to try to replace the screen?
Thank you in advance for any help in the subject. I also apologize in advance if I was verbose or too vague.

Interesting story below about a guy who logged into his stolen laptop to help cops get it back for him. What program do you think he had on his laptop? I use LogMeIn on my PCs, but any time I log in to one from another a box pops up saying the computer is being shared by a remote user... so a thief would know if I were trying to track him down.

Suggestions?
WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) -- A laptop thief got caught -- after the computer owner tracked him remotely.

Jose Caceres said he used a remote access program to log on every day and watch his computer being used, and then tipped off police, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old male suspect.

Caceres, 27, of White Plains, said his computer was stolen in early September when he left it on top of his car while carrying things into his home.

His first efforts to figure out who stole the laptop by logging on remotely were stymied, Caceres said. "It was kind of frustrating because he was mostly using it to watch porn," he said. "I couldn't get any information on him."

But then the suspect typed in a name and address to register on a Web site, and a few hours later, police caught the suspect.

The man was charged with grand larceny, said police Lt. Eric Fischer in Wednesday editions of the Journal News.

Tech-savvy victims are increasingly supplying police with information leading to arrests, authorities said. In May, a White Plains woman whose laptop was stolen also used remote access technology t... Read more

well, my dad has 2 OSz in his computer. 1 is Windows Me n the other XP. so he decided to unintall Me to save space as his XP was werkin fine. but after uninstallin Me, he got an error message saying that the boot.ini file is invalid n its loadin from c:\windows\. after that, it asks if he wants to start windows normal, safe mode, n blah blah blah (default F8 options). so he chose to start normally. then while its loadin, the BSOD comes for a split second n the computer restarts immediately. he has tried bootin from safe mode n all the other options available there, but same thing happens. so, do u guyz have any idea what is wrong? thanks 4 the help.

Question: Busted .NET 2.0

Ok. This is rather involved so here goes.

I recently purchased Visual Studio 2005. Installed it and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. Everything worked perfectly.

Then Windows Update started telling me that there was a "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770)". However, whenever I tried to download the patch I would get the error "Microsoft .NET Services Installation Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close". This would happen several times a day. I finally got tired of it, so off to the Microsoft Knowledge Base for an answer. I promptly found an article (KB908077) on "How to troubleshoot Microsoft .NET 2.0 Framework 2.0 installation issues". Tried to follow the instructions, but when I uninstalled and tried to reinstall .NET Framework 2.0 it wouldn't reinstall. No matter how hard I tried. It seemed to be crashing because of something to do with System.EnterpriseServices.dll.

The only way that I could get .NET Framework 2.0 back up was to do a system restore.

So, uninstalled Visual Studio 2005 and tried to uninstall SQL Server 2005. When I clicked uninstall in Control Panel/Add Remove Software nothing happened. SQL Server is still there. Shut down SQL Server and tried again, same thing. Tried in Safe Mode, same thing. SQL Server simply will not go away. Tried reinstalling SQL Server and almost immediately get the message "SQL Server setup failed".

So, puting SQL Server aside for awhil... Read more

Am I basically out $40 on this? Or is there something that can still be done?:confused

Hi gumshoe546,

Bumping is usually not allowed unless you have more information to add to a previous post.

Your image is very blurry so it is impossible to see anything. I would just replace the headphones with a set of Cyber Sniper Sonar 5.1 headphone/microphone headset. About $65 at Tiger Direct.

Gotten a lot of help in the past here so there's defo no other place I'd go:

Well here we go:

I got the consrv.dll virsus from downloading a funky game. I had to do a repair from windows vista to fix it. And it worked until the next day when after being online for a bit the screen froze. I retarted then it said it couldnt find nvstor.dll...its something to do with nvidia. I tried booting off the vista dvd again and it started to boot up again so i could reinstall windows but alas the HD wasnt in the list of drives to repair/install. It just said to look for drivers.

After this everytime I turned on the machine it just says it needs the boot cd and wait there for me to pop it in. All drives are set to auto search in the BIOS but it aint showing up anymore. Its vanished.

I cant tell if its spooling up and maybe the last two reinstalls where the swan song of a very cheap piece of crap hardrive or that the drivers needed for it to boot are lost or..something...bascially ive no idear. And want to try some things before i go down the get a new HD/install windows/get all my apps etc again...pretty annoying. plus theres stuff on there I wouldnt mind having again.,

THANK!

Answer:Possible Unknown Busted HD

You first have to determine if it's spinning up when powered on. Is this a desktop or a laptop? Either way, put your ear closest to the hard drive when powering on the machine to see if you can hear it spin up or not.

Second thing to do is double check the cables/connections. Even on a laptop, try re-seating the drive in the connector. If it isn't spinning up, and you're sure the cables/connections are good, then it's likely your drive has bit the dust. Even if it is spinning up, it could still be bad. Another thing you can try is to boot from a bootable live Linux distro, such as Puppy or Mint, and see if you can see the hard drive using one of those.

I have tried to clean install windows 7 64x on my new desktop and it goes too slow for me to think it is healthy. After about 15 minutes it gives me an error code 0x8007045D.
What I want to know is how to make a diagnosis. IDK if I'm having an issue with the optical drive or hard drive. Also, I purchased my copy of windows and was wondering if there is a LEGIT way of ripping it to an iso for backup. PowerISO doesn't seem to want to. I am also interested in that because I know a person who had my problem and he said he had to burn his copy to a different disc to get it to work. My only issue with that is it's a brand new copy of windows and looks almost flawless.

Answer:Are one of my drives busted?

Try testing your drive using the appropriate tool: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Question: my 9800xt busted??

ok I swear from the time i got it to now this thing has never worked very well, I get VPU recover and restarts quite often. Its happening right now while my comp is just sittin here it freezes and restarts- this was the last error I got and am now wondering is it just my graphics card thats bad or something? I try to play HL2 and it quits on me, I barely play games anymore, probably every third time i start it it makes wierd lines and i have to turn the monitor on and off, when i started it today-(similar to other occasions) I had to turn off the monitor and back on because it wasnt recieving any signal or something. Driver issues? (tried many, now have cat 4.12), heat issues only? graphics card itself?

this is the most recent error i got today if its any clue- .... for some reason the image isnt posting right I'll fix it later.

Answer:my 9800xt busted??

Before I would blame your card, I might check out the PSU. It could be that your card is getting bad or not enough juice. If its not that, then you might indeed have a faulty card. Although i was having this problem and I thought it was my card. So i took my card out to look at it and when I reseated it everything was working fine again.

Question: Busted VGA port?

Hi guys,

I'm using a 2.75 year old laptop. I have recently, for about 4 months now, hooked it up to a 22" Samsung monitor. Today, while watching a youtube video, the entire Samsung monitor had a green tint to it, as though you were wearing green shades and looking at the screen. Initially, I thought it was my monitor, but future inspection indicated that it was actually my laptop (I used a different laptop while maintaining the same VGA cable and the colors were fine). Moreover, the screen on my laptop is fine and has no green tint to it.

This has led me to believe that my VGA Port has gone bad or something and I cannot understand how this has happened. I'm wondering if this is a software issues, or an actual physical issue in which a transistor or capacitor has just blown up or something inside?

I've tried reconnecting it at 4 hour intervals or so but it still has a green tint on the external monitor. Anyone have any ideas, or am I just, "bleh"?

I've considered getting those USB to DVI adapters, but I don't know how "fast" those adapters are, and at 70 USD or so, I find them to be rather expensive.

Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions/tips are welcome. I would be REALLY grateful if this problem is fixable.

Cheers.

Answer:Busted VGA port?

Physical issue, likely due to bad contact on the motherboard.

Answer:help me my internet busted

There are two options:
1 - Get a better browser. Sometimes a browser will slow down your connection because the browser simply cannot process as fast as the internet provides. I would recommend Firefox or IE8
2 - Call your ISP. Since you still have internet, it could be a problem on their end.

The latest TH2 update that came out today broke Everything search. I tried the official and beta versions. 32 and 64 bit versions too. They will no longer index the C: just my D: partion. It would otherwise keep telling me to run the Everything service which I do and C: is still unsearchable. If I run as a admin which is another choice c: tries to index and crashes Everything.

I rely on this program as the build in Windows search is terrible slow and never finds all files even when I am staring right at them in a folder. Any other alternatives?

Hello Reeniemason, and welcome to TSG.

Do you know of, or can find, someone handy with a soldering iron? They may be able to cut up a USB cable and attach it to the remains of the pen drive.

To prevent being a Damsel in distress in the future, you should store and update all important files in more than one location.

Installed a Sapphire 9800 Pro 256MB AGP card last night to an old motherboard, after a few hours of running I was getting VPU Recovery errors and eventually when resolved the graphics in my games resembled the image at: http://photobucket.com/albums/b163/...nt=graphics.jpg

We've tried reinstalling drivers, installing catalyst drivers 5.6-5.8 and Omega 5.8 drivers, tried new motherboard with more BIOS settings, is this a hardware overheating problem? It was running hot earlier but we added some better thermal compound and it seems to be running cool now, no XT so no temp. monitoring =/

the graphical anomaly is on top of the graphics, I don't think it's a texture issue so I don't think it's overheating, what's the deal?

Ok one of my terminals caught some god forsaken virus and started spamming the crap out of the web. We ended up on spamcop and SpamHaus. A install of NOD32 and a reboot later no more spam. I worked with most of the larger ISP's and Spam cop and SpamHaus to get off there list but there is a problem.

I still cant email Yahoo accounts or Earthlink accounts. I have called emailed submitted webforms and have gotten zero responses from either company. I am having to resort to BBB and Attorney general complaints but i doubt this will work. Has any one every had to get removed from these companies block lists? or know who provides their list so that i can try to get removed from it? and up until recently i've only used 2 of the usb ports, but now that i need to use 2 more, it seems that only the ones i was using actually work!!

would this be a fault with the board or something to do with the set up?

ok, here's the deal...I got two drives on my pc. One of them has an apparently "illegal" copy of windows. My second drive has a 100% legal copy of windows. I am aware of how to get your serial number through your registry and how to change it. (microsoft has their own page) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874/

However, here's the problem: the drive with the good copy of windows will not boot up. I can browse the drive just fine, but the sucker just wont load up with my pc.

Any tips/ suggestions? Can I view the other hard drive's registry without booting from it? ect.

Question: My video is busted

Hey,

I just noticed that something is wrong with my video displaying. For all the videos that I have in whatever format, avi. or mpg., the video quality is messed up. Instead of having the colours it's suppose to display, it kind of plays more of a black and white. There's colour but I know that it's all wrong. There's a trailer where the guy should have normal skin color, but now he's all blue. I tried it with many other trailers and same result.

The most recent thing I have done is update my video card from Windows Update. Now I didn't even realize it for awhile, but I believe this was the cause of the problem. Therefore, I rolled back my video driver, but it's the same result. There's still distortion in the colour from my videos. Pictures work fine but it's just videos. I've tried playing videos in Winamp 5.08 and Windows Media Player 9 and both have the same result.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, a S3 ProSavageDDR 32MB. It's integrated onto my motherboard which is Matsonic I believe.

Any suggestions or help would be great. Thanks

Answer:My video is busted

I seem to remember others having this problem a long time ago but can't remember specifically what they had to do, my video card sadly is less advanced than yours
(pathetic I know)

But the picture I show is "sort of" what I think you need to do, I believe you can go into your display properties and change hue/saturation/etc and get the video to look right if I remember correctly

Good Luck, Maybe someone here remember.

Security researchers tonight are poring over a piece of malicious software that takes advantage of a Firefox security vulnerability to identify some users of the privacy-protecting Tor anonymity network.Click to expand...

Don't know how [H] news missed this but, looks like the gov is on the payroll of the MPAA.RIAA and what ever...so if you think you are going anon with Firefox...think again.

Answer:Firefox+TOR+Fed=Your busted

Actually the problem was fixed in Firefox months ago and if you did some research it specifically targeted ESR 17, which is what the TOR browser is based on.

It's also been known for years that TORs biggest issue is the capturing of sensitive information and evidence of your true IP from exit nodes. This is why you are advised to turn off all plugins if you are trying to browse anonymously. TORs is good to make it harder to determine who you are, not to completely make you anonymous.

There's been evidence that's popped up time to time of several governments running exit nodes on the sly for years.

Question: Busted Drive?

Hey all.
When I put CDs (installation, music ect..) CDs into my (LG DVD-R) drive it doesnt read them. It doesnt even acknowledge that a disc is inside. It also doesnt show up on the My Computer window. But the device manager says its there. The device manager calls it a "LR1393Q RPB855X SCSI CdRom Device". Now I dont know what that means, but a friend says its seeing it as a "Scuzzy"(?) drive.

Is it fried?

Answer:Busted Drive?

There could be a couple problems causing this. For one thing, did you install this drive yourself. If so, make sure that the connection between the drive and the soundcard/onboard sound is not broken in any way. The other thing that might cause a problem is this. Is it hooked up through IDE or SCSI? Very similar but not the same thing. If it is an SCSI Drive, then that opens a whole different area to troubleshoot.

And yes, it is possible that it might be fried, but, try troubleshooting it a little further.

Answer:Everything busted in TH2 Update.

Hopefully someone who's also upgraded and uses Everything will comment- I've not got the upgrade yet, and intend to defer it (always best to stand back and let the flak die down).

The tool I use is Locate32. Old fashioned GUI by comparison but it does much the same job the same way. Its GUI allows much more intuitive search range specification.

Question: busted monitor x 2

busted monitor for the second time in a year

I don't understand this: I just used my computer a few hours ago and when I turned it on again, the monitor is *messed up. This is the second time this happened and this 19" RIC monitor is a little over a year old. Is this what I get for paying less than $200 for a 19 incher?

When the computer is turned on and starts loading, the screen is squiggly and warped outward, like a fat-bellied man. Once it reaches the logon screen and shows the desktop, the squiggly is gone and the screen is a perfect rectangle again, but the extreme top and bottom portion of the screen are compressed. This becomes evident as you scroll text from top to bottom of the screen since the text gets larger when it reaches the center of the screen and gets smaller as it reaches the top or bottom of the screen.

I don't know if I should send it for repair again or just do it myself. If the shipping was free I would send it in, but for the price of shipping a 50lb monitor I would just as well get a new 17 inch monitor. I'll also have to wait until school is over.

Can anyone guide me to how to fix this, if it's as simple as replacing a resistor?

Answer:busted monitor x 2

I would call them and tell them you are very displeased, if they won't fix it or replace it, ask for your money back !! When buying a cheap one, make sure there is a service center in your area if at all possible. Another alternative is find a local electronics shop that fixes TV's and such and take it there. I have one here that has fixed a ton of my stuff and nothing has ever had to be returned !!

I've been working on a few things on this desktop to make it run a little better and I've run into a bit of another snag. When I got ahold of the computer I installed Windows 7 on it first off to erase whatever the original owner had on it. After that I found that the DVD drive will no longer work. I've also found that one of the IDE ports will not work for either the HDD or the DVD. The DVD drive will also not work when I use the still functioning port (yes I've tried different IDE cables). I'm currently trying to get rid of Windows 7 just to see if it might be a problem with the OS, but it seems to be near impossible as I require a DVD drive to install the XP (I've tried virtual drives but XP won't install the same way as 7 from the virtual drive).

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello.....Im running Windows 7 (32 bit) with an Intel Pentium 4, 2GB DDR2, 256 Nvidia 6600. I replaced the Power supply recently because a friend suggested that the GPU would be sucking most of the power. I replaced it with a 450Watt and it worked fine for a few weeks. Then after a while I tried starting up and I got the error code 1 3 4 on the diagnostic lights. I drained the capacitor once and then it started to work fine for about 3 months until this morning it started acting up. It started and when I restarted it and it gave the lights again.

Tried reinstalling all the components and draining the Cap agen but to no avail.

Question: G460 HD busted?

Hi, the other day my G460 with Windows 7 Home Basic had random freezes, so I made a CHKDSK /R and left it all morning. It only finished after 12 hours, and after that my pc won't boot to Windows 7, and OneKey recovery won't work, it is stuck at 0% with 0 bytes/minute, is there a way to recover it?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:G460 HD busted?

It sounds like the hard disk has failed, and will need to be be replaced.  Before you commit to a purchase, you might try using a different computer and an USB adapter to see if any data remains on the drive.  If you can read from the drive, do not get rid of it, once you have installed a new drive, you can copy your data files (documents, pictures and music) from the old to the new with that same USB adapter.

If you did not make recovery disks prior to the hard disk failure you will need to either purchase them from Lenovo Support or aquire a licensed retail copy of Windows (with attached license key) or as an alternative you could install one of the free operating systems such as Linux Mint and not worry about licensing issues with Microsoft products.

Good Luck.

My Dvd/cd-rw drive was working perfectly fine a few days ago...then one day i found out one of my game disc was so scratched i couldn't play it.  I kept popping it in and the computer wouldn't detect the cd.  I didn't think it was the drive until I popped in another BLANK cd and even that wouldn't work.  Everything seems fine,  the cd spins (although it's slower then normal), and device manager says its working fine.  When I double click the drive, it doesn't say "Please insert a Cd" or something like that but it opens and it's blank.  I checked the properties everytime i put a cd in and the space was always zero.  I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for it.  Its a Phillips CDRW/DVD CDD5263.  Any help would be appreciated

Question: Busted router?

Hey,

A while earlier, I was attempting to get a games console connected to the wireless network but with no success; the router wasn't issuing the system an IP, even though DCHP was enabled and all router settings were configured correctly.

This particular router is the Belkin F5D7130UK model.

To cut a long story short, I cleverly activated the option to convert the router into an access point and circumvent the firewall system entirely, as I'd noticed that in the security log the firewall was blocking pings from the console and, I assumed, this was what was causing the issue. Disabling the firewall and activating DMZ did nothing, so I decided to go with the full option.

It backfired somewhat as the entire Belkin setup page stopped responding and the new router IP I set didn't function either. I performed a factory reset and the setup page started functioning again.

The router is now not distributing the 10mbit connection at all - not even to the primary PC on my desk here, connected to the wireless router directly via ethernet. The modem itself is working fine, as right now it's plugged directly into my PC and I'm able to make this post.

I've reset both modem and router countless times, swapped cables, modified router settings, restarted the router, reset the router, disabled everything at the mains and waited five minutes and the only thing I've yet to try is hurling it out a window. It's looking really quite tempting.

My insti... Read more

Answer:Busted router?

Please supply the following info, exact models of the equipment please.

The name of your ISP and country of residence.
Make/model of the broadband modem. If dial-up, please specify.
Make/model of the router (if any).
Connection type, wired, wireless.
Make/model of network card or wireless adapter.
Make/model of your computer (motherboard if home-built).
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home SP2.

Why not connect ONE computer to the router with a wired connection, and the router to the broadband modem, and try to get that working first. You might want to reset the router to factory defaults as well, so we're starting out from a known configuration.

In that configuration, let's see this:

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I'm asking this for someone I game with.

Her router is some Verizon FiOS router. Awhile ago her father apparently busted the internal antenna somehow. Now when she does anything like online gaming or using VOIP programs (eg, Ventrilo, etc.) she gets a ton of lag occasionally. Her ping in Ventrilo would skyrocket to over 1000ms and she would start lagging like crazy in games yet her signal level would be high.

I told her to have her parents get a new router from Verizon since they're free, but I guess her parents have that pretty low on their priority list.

What is the problem in a more technical sense? Is there any temporary solutions until she can get a new router?

Sorry for the vague details, I don't remember a whole lot of what happened.

I've had my Dimension 4700 Desktop for about four years now, but about two years ago, the sound started to get funky. After about an hour of use (it would vary), it would start popping. It would hardly be noticeable at first, but after another hour or so, it was hardly bearable. I have an Creative SB Audigy 2 (WDM) sound card with Legacy audio drivers and SoundMax digital Audio.

Over the past two years I've tried everything: changing the speakers, moving the computer, replacing the driver (a couple of times), switching the PCI slot, etc. I've scoured forums and nothing seems to fix my problem. It finally hit me a while back that the sound card could be overheating. That would explain why the problem goes away when I leave the computer off or in standby for a while, but isn't fixed by a restart. Then when the computer heats back up the popping returns.

My question is three-fold.

-Do you guys think I'm right about the heat, or could it be some other problem (and if it is the heat, is there a way I can fix this)?
-Is there anything you guys think I should try before replacing my sound card?
-If nothing else works, do you think replacing the sound card will fix the problem? If so, what's a cheap card you would recommend?

Any help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

-Thomas

Answer:Help Replacing Busted SoundCard

Heat may be a problem, but it could be a slightly defective card too. I'd say replace it.

I'd recommend anything from the Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi series, this one being the cheapest in that series.

Hey ummm.... when I put my voodoo 3 card in my computer after I set my video display driver to PCI (as opposed to onboard) my screen went all wierd as it was booting up and it froze up and went wierd when it was finished booting up. when this happened my monitor was connected to my voodoo card and then, when I put my S3 Virge video card in it was normal. and when my voodoo card was in my old computer I was fine but it eventually broke down, and when on my old computer I connected my moniter to the regular video card, the screen didn't go wierd as it was booting up and it didn't freeze up when it did boot up like when I used the voodoo card on my new comp.

is there somewhere I can go to get my voodoo 3 car repaired?
what might be wrong with it?

Also when I tried to play the demo of warcraft 3 it said that It thought that I didn't have direct X 8.1 or a proper driver for a video card but I do have DX 9c. I do know that my video card only has 2 Mb of video memory, but when it says It thought that I didn't have direct X 8.1 or a proper driver for a video card, does that mean I dont have enough video mem or I dont have a proper driver for my S3 virge? because that game does require 8 MB of video mem...

Question: Video card busted?

So, today I started my computer up and everything seemed fine. After about 5 minutes of waiting for my computer to show me the login screen, nothing happened and I was beginning to wonder what was wrong. So, I restarted and waited again. My computer normally boots up in under 30 seconds so this is obviously a problem.

Wondering if it was my monitor, I plugged it in to a working computer and everything was ok there.

As of now, my computer is still on a black screen and it seems as if the monitor is not really detecting anything.I am using a different computer right now.The power light on the monitor is blinking as if I have left it on after the computer is off. Please help

Thanks

Try another dvi cord if you have one, or the other dvi port on your vga if possible. I once had this issue, but solved it with a new dvi cord.

Another occuring issue I once had was after updating drivers for my vga my computer wouldnt detect my lcd tv so I had to go through another process to fix it. If you dont use an lcd tv obviously it isnt your issue.

I got a friend who broke the screen on an Acer netbook. It has Win XP so when we plug in a monitor through VGA port it will display it until the welcome screen, at which point it sends signal only to the busted screen. We tried Fn+F5 but nothing happens.

Only way is boot in safe mode, but it can't run programs. Any tips?

Answer:Busted screen on netbook - VGA possible?

is there a screen output option in the bios? what video chipset? can you boot in safe mode and change the graphics options to output to the other screen?

Since this afternoon, when I try to boot my laptop I get this error:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

I have searched google and found some relative articles, although the solutions have not yielded any success.

This Microsoft article , which covers my exact error message, results in the error message "Cannot copy the file" or something like that, even after I log on through recovery console.

Is there any way to get around this? I have a dell inspiron 600m, and afaik it did not come with a recovery cd. I have attempted to restore to factory settings using this dell page however the key combinations do nothing. Chkdsk shows errors however fixes nothing.

I would just reformat however there are files in My Documents I need (my notes, relative to a final exam this week *sob*) that I do not wish to inadvertantly delete.

Any ideas?

Answer:Help! Winxp registry busted? :(

The first rule is, to always have a back up of important data. Especially if you have no plan to rescue the data. I would download BartPE and boot from the disc, then copy the files you need to save to a USB drive or a network share.

I'm not sure if this approach is legal, but you could borrow an XP CD from a friend and run a repair install.

Question: Safe Mode Busted?

Hi all..i was workign on another problem so i tried to boot in safemode. However, safemode would not load. Open selecting F8 -->start in safemode, i was greeted by a black screen and a wall of white text giving the approximate values of something to the effect below.

"multi(o)disk(2)partition/system32 driver/random names of files
multi(o)disk(2)partition/system32 driver/random names of files
multi(o)disk(2)partition/system32 driver/random names of files
multi(o)disk(2)partition/system32 driver/random names of files
multi(o)disk(2)partition/system32 driver/random names of files

Any idea what may cause this and how i can fix it?

Answer:Safe Mode Busted?

This always shows when you start in Safe Mode (well, at least it does on my machine ). It can take some time for Safe Mode to start, so try again and be patient. If it still won't load then you may have to consider something else. Let me know how you get on.

Question: Hard Drive Busted!

Gawd I'm an idiot. In a rush I plugged in my external drive casing with the cord of my laptop. This means I gave it more juice than it wanted and I think I burned it out. It never worked, of course, when I did that. Now when I use the right cord it doesn't even turn on. There is a green light on the transformer. It is solid till I connect it to the casing. Then it fades a bit and starts to blink. I think it is blinking "You're an idiot" in morse code...

First Question: Could I just have to reset it somehow? (I'd be looking at the instructions but they are at home and I am not.)

I have checked the manual online and there are no reset instructions. I think I will have to buy a new casing...please let it be just a new casing....

The Enclosure is a Nex Star CX External 3.5" USB 2,0 Interface.

Second Questionlease tell me that the external casing took the hit not the harddrive inside...

Umm Ya if you preface this answer with "Idiot" I'd totally understand...

I'm on Roadrunner wireless, is there anything I can do?

Hi all,

I'm running Windows XP Home w/ SP2, and Office XP Home on my laptop. I have the installation CD for Office XP Professional, but my laptop's integrated CD-ROM is busted. I was hoping to copy the CD-ROM over to the integrated hard drive and then install from there.

Wanted to get some response just in case I was about to do something I'd regret later...

Regards,

Answer:Installing MS Office when the CD-ROM busted

Should work fine.

I always copy the Office CD into a directory on the HDD, as it saves reloading it to change setup options etc in Office.

My power button on my hp laptop does nothing ...it's "collapsed" I guess.
Taking it apart seems a bit like kissing it good-bye. Luckily this unit has a "quick play" button that starts it or wakes it up. It goes directly to a media player type thing with an option to go to windows...been using that but would like to have the "reset" function of the power button if it's re-assignable.
Here's the question...is there a way to assign the job of starting up to a custom button?
Thank for the help...

Answer:Power button busted!

Best bet is to check with the manufacturer, if it's still in warranty then take it off to the retailer as they'll be able to put in an RMA for you.

My friend's computer just stop working and I am trying to help her out.

We keep getting a "Error Loading OS"
I am assuming it is a busted hard drive. What can we do? She said she would pay for whatever is needed to get it running again. She does have a backup I think

:major:major

Answer:My friend's busted computer

The first step would be going to the computer bios to see if the HDD is recognized there. Usually pressing F1 or F2 or Del key during post will bring up the system bios depending on the system manufacturer.

If the HDD is listed, it could be a lot of things from a corrupt file system to a lost or corrupt boot sector or even a virus.

If the HDD is not listed, the HDD itself may have failed or any number of other things such as a bad controller, a bad ribbon, a bad power supply and so on.

So here's the story:

A cat pee'd into my keyboard, so the computer sometimes thinks that I'm pressing the Shift, Alt, or Ctrl keys when I'm not. That's why I bought a new PS2 keyboard, only to find out that the new keyboard acts the same way like the old busted keyboard. Which led me to think that the pee somehow also destroyed the PS2 Port.

Question:

Can I just desolder the PS2 wire from the keyboard and directly solder a USB wire (replacing the PS2 wire) so that I can connect the keyboard into a USB port on the PC?

EDIT:

I already bought a PS2 to USB adapter. Problem is it doesn't work like the 'ordinary' keyboards. It's OK for ordinary use but for FPS games, it's not OK. It has a problem with multiple keys being pressed at the same time. (Eg. Pressing 'a' + 's' then letting go of 's' but still pressing 'a' should have an output of "...aaasaaa..." but using this adapter it outputs "...aaas" ). I hope people could understand what I'm trying to say here.

Umm No

You need a normal USB Keyboard (can be as low as $10)
And a USB port on your computer

That's it

Question: Busted email page

Good day, and thank you for reading my post. I'm having a hard time reading my mail. After I login at the Yahoo mail page, it registers and then directs me to a blank page, just plain white, nothing. Whenever I click on the refresh button I get the "error on page" message on the bottom left corner of the window. But when I go to Yahoo's main page, everything is working fine, and I'm even logged in. And the rest of my web browsing experience is fine. It's just the yahoo mail page with all my email that I can't read. I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone could offer. Again, thank you for your time.

My external HD is busted, while transfering files my stupid computer froze up and when I restarted the computer, the HD was fried. I tried reformatting 3 times to no avail.
I just get the error at 100% "Windows was unable to complete this format" I even tried deleting the partition and reformatting it that way, I get the same problem.

I don't care about the data, how do I get my external HD to format correcty? I NEED this hard drive. (The HD is USB if that matters.)

Answer:I messed up, External HD Busted.

HP USB Disk Storage Format Utility
Http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/peripherals/SP27608.exe

Will format any USB flash drive (actually I've never tried it on a USB Hard Drive!)
It can be known to recover Flash drives that are un-responsive too.

Please let me know of the outcome

How do I know if my video card's busted, or if I just messed up the settings of my laptop without realizing it? I was playing DinerTown (hehe) the other day, and now I suddenly can't. It tells me my video card can't support it. The same goes for other games I usually play. Jojo's Fashion show slowed down a great deal, and I can't even open up Windows Movie Maker anymore (tells me the same thing, video card doesn't support it).

I'm not sure if it means anything, but I recently upgraded my directX from 9.0c to 10. That really shouldn't be a problem, but things just got nutty after I did... and if I remember correctly, there's no way to downgrade it so I can actually check if that's the case.

I don't know what info's needed, but here goes... My video card: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family. It's running on Vista Home Basic, and my laptop has 3GB Ram.

Answer:Is my Video Card busted?

Yesterday I turned on my computer to talk on Ventrilo (voice communication program) And no one could hear me talking. They could only hear a loud humming noise, and it was set to what I hear for some reason, so they heard that too. Ive tried using different voice programs AND Microphones. Still doesn't work. Now, I did NOT change any setting the night before, download any programs, or remove anything, visit any new websites etc. so, somehow over night my control panel settings got screwed over Is suppose.

My apologies for wall of text, anyone know the problem? Or a guide on how to fix it? Thanks.
