Update and question

Question: Update and question

Hi all,A month or so ago I posted because I fried my motherboard and possibly my CPU. Since then I have been getting parts to build a new machine and I have one question maybe someone can help me with. What I bought so far: Pentium Core2 Duo, E6300, 1.86GHz processor Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-TO5-UW case Coolmax SLI CXI-500B ATX v2.01 power supply Gigabyte GV-NX76G256D-RH GeForce 7600GS 256MB PCI-E video card w/ Silent Pipe heatsinkI had a couple different motherboards in mind but I think I'm going to wait for an Nvidia 650i SLI board which should be coming out soon. The 680i's are already out but I really don't need that much firepower at that price. I'm not a big gamer and not an overclocker....yet...lol. One reason to wait for the 650i is that it has 2 IDE connector's as well as the SATA's so I can use my ATA hard drives as well as my CD/DVD drives. Which leads me to this question:Is it feasible to just install the Maxstor 80GB hard drive I have now (running Windows 2000, SP4) and would there be a lot of pre-install work to do? Or would it be better to get a new SATA drive (looking at a Seagate 7200.10) and reinstall Win2k? I have a lot of CAD stuff and utilities that would be a pain to reinstall. Would a Ghost image work on a new drive or possibly the Disk Wizard that Seagate has which transfers the old drive contents to the new drive?Anyone see any potential problems with either direction I go? I'd like to go the easiest possible route but not if it's going to screw things up for me. Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Update and question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Update and question

The 7600 GS is not a good card price/performance wise.I suppose if u already have the 7600 GS, u could buy another and have them work together in SLi, but its a waste of money, because for the price of 2 of these u could have gotten a much better card, and then bought another after some time has passes - thats the whole point of SLi, buying a single card that costs like 2, and then another identical card after a while. You can buy an extra PCI, IDE connecter and have as many IDE slots as u want.

Question: Update question

Yesterday Windows requested to do an update. I said yes.

This was not a normally scheduled update.

This was on a Samsung Utrabook PC.

After the update it would not accept my password.

It forced me to use my password for my Microsoft Outlook email account.

It rearranged my screen substantially.

Why did this happen?

Question: XP Update Question

Running XP Home SP3 with all updates. Just went to the Update site and found 4 new Critical Updates listed. I make a practice of noting the numbers, then going to the Windows Update Catalog site and downloading the executable files to my external HDD for installation from there. I did so for 3 of the 4 updates listed. The 4th one was KB972260, shown on the Windows Update site as a cumulative security update for IE6. I have IE6, SP3 on my system which I use ONLY for windows updates and the rare download that requires IE. My default browser is SeaMonkey v1.1.17 and I also have Firefox v3.5.1 installed.

When I went to the Catalog site and entered KB972260 in Search, I could not find the update for my configuration. In fact, there was only 1 entry referencing IE6 and that was for SP1 (mine is SP3) and that was for Windows 2000. The only listing for XP was for x64-bit systems (I have 32-bit) or for IE8. Not sure what to do here...

Here's a link to the Update Catalog for KB972260.

Any thoughts or ideas... Raybro

Hi,

Does anyone know how frequently MSE updates its virus definitions?

I've set it to check for virus and spyware definitons prior to scheduled scans, but it isn't clear to me whether it checks and updates definitions at any other time.

I've had a look through the MSE help, but can't find any information on this.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Regards,
Golden

Answer:MSE Update question....

Not really an answer to your question but on mine it seems to search for updates on bootup/startup, I have Windows Update set to Notify only & MSE still manages to keep itself up-to-date, I've never actually witnessed MSE searching & updating by itself but it does.

I'm never on when my Scheduled Scan is set to run.

Question: XP/Update Question

Hey everyone. I tried to keep the title simple as you can see. I had a guy build me a computer a few years ago for pretty cheap so I couldn't ask for too much. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Version and I can't update to Service Pack 2. I'm kind of behind as far as my updates because of this. It says "The requested action is not present in activation context" or something like that. Then it says I should insert my Windows XP CD, but I don't have one. What do I do? Is there any way around this? Other than this issue, my comp performance is pretty good actually.

Answer:XP/Update Question

Why not?

I get to do a fun thing. My brother-in -law got himself a brand spanking new Dell Inspiron. had it deleived to my house so I could get it set up for him. I've installed AVG Free and ZA free along with AdAware SE and Spybot supported with Spywareblaster. His usage will be nothing exotic, just your basic system. He is a total newby and will be using it (at least at the onset) for simple surfing and perhaps e-mail. It has XP SP2 installed and therein lies my question. After going to the winupdate site and getting all the ActiveX stuff taken care of, I finally got to the update part of the process, I find there are 43 updates to be downloaded and installed. Estimate is like 7+ hours (I'm on dial-up). I've already disallowed the malischous program one. Are there any others that have been problems or considered not needed. They are all listed in the Critical Updates section.

I'm a Win989SE guy and would 'preciate any suggetions or thoughts on this you XP types.

Answer:XP Win Update Question

I would go through each update and read what they do. A lot of them will fix security holes that may or may not effect the user. If you can get access to a higherspeed connection you should be able to get all those updates done in less than an hour. My other recommendation would be to just let them update, and do it over night while you sleep.

Question: Update question

Hello to the forum. I would like to find out if it is possible to accumulate all the necessary updates for win 7 32 or 64 bit on a spare HD so that when my kids break something, I have the updates here ready to go. I know that was possible with earlier versions of Microsoft OS, but I have not tried it with Win 7.
What I would like to accomplish is a cache of updates (current) to have when needed, and not have to tie up my internet for hours.
Thank you for any comments or advice.

Answer:Update question

The easiest way I know of is to make an image of the OS itself so, if the kids break something, you can restore the image, complete with OS, updates, etc. See this thread on using Macrium Reflect to make and restore images.

I just installed the Windows 10 blocker "Never-10" on this desktop and it was completely accomplished within seconds, complete with removal of nearly 17GB of hidden Windows 10 files that were lurking around in there.

Then I happened to remember that we also had a seldom-used laptop with Windows 7 64-b Home Premium, so I decided to add Never-10 to it as well.

Things haven't went so quickly on this one.

Once I downloaded Never-10 and clicked "run", I got the window that says the laptop is missing the necessary Microsoft update that allows Windows 10 to be disallowed; I clicked the "install update" button, at which point I got a window that says "Windows Update Standalone Installer"

Within this window is a progression bar that says "searching for updates on this computer"

This has been searching for updates for over an hour now.

Is this normal and how much longer should this take ?

Thanks.
On Edit: I got it fixed.

It just sat for hours with WUSI searching for updates until I finally gave up and shut down the computer; I waited about fifteen minutes, restarted the computer, and ran Never-10 all over again from the beginning.

In about five minutes it installed the necessary KB3065987 update, disabled any future O/S monkey business, and restarted the computer.

All is well now.

Thanks for reading.

Question: Update question

I know it is important to install important updates but should I also install optional updates?

Answer:Update question

You can be picky about them, for instance I'll install some of the hardware updates (CPU, network adapter, etc.) and the greater than 32 gig flash card compatibility update and so on but if there's language packs (for Ultimate) I'll leave those and also .net 4 stuff if I don't need it...those updates potentially have a usability impact and not a security impact.

Question: Update Question

I was just wondering why my computer only lists five updates in the update history?? One of them is for the GPU that failed to install. Thank you for your time.

Answer:Update Question

How long has Windows 10 been running on this PC? Cumulative updates are issued monthly, the most recent being January 10, 2017 - KB3213986 (OS Build 14393.693). Four cumulative updates installed through Windows Update would be consistent with a system that was first booted around mid-October 2016. Two CUs and two Malicious software removal tools would place it about mid-December.

Note that restoring a system image or reinstalling Windows, either by a reset or an in-place repair install will clear the update history.

Answer:Win Update question

Vonnie, if you're in doubt whether or not you need a noncritical update, click on the "read more" button then keep clicking until you understand what the update is all about. For example, the update you mention is related to M$ Access. If you use that program, then you need that update. If you don't then don't worry about it, it will be there if in the future if you do. It's always a good idea to read about all the updates, even the critical ones, so you understand what they are concerned with.

Answer:AVG Update Question

The "higher" numbers refer to the Program Version e.g 6.0.488. Generally both that number and the Virus Database number (currently 287) increase with each update published by Grisoft. Sometimes though (for no obvious reason) the numbers "jump" over the next sequential number.

Question: Update question

Hi everybody,

I just purchased a new computer with Windows 8.1 on it (and 7 but it defaulted to 8.1), so I thought I would finally give 8.1 a try.  I did my usual routine with a new computer:

Installed an antivirus  - Emsisoft Internet Security
Installed Malwarebytes - stand alone only (no real-time)
Removed some bloatware

My question is simple.  I have read here at BC and other sites that Microsoft released a few bad updates that crashed or similarly flawed  some computers.  Has the issue been resolved?  I see about 100 updates waiting for installation, but I do not want to continue until I know they are all safe.  Are there any in particular I should not install?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Update question

Mello -
There is no problem, and I have been running it non-stop (and a forum member) since 2008 when the main first release came out.

The problem I think you mention (from well over a year back), was fixed with an Update that day, and has not been a problem since.

We can assure you that it is very safe.

Is your Emsisoft Internet Security just the Antivirus version (just a question)

Thank You -

There was an offer to receive an up-grade to Windows 7 Premium and I have now received the set-up CD.

My Computer works great with Vista. Several People have told me that Windows 7 is much more stable and is great looking also. My problem is this, how compatible will my software (Office 2003, Dreamweaver, etc) be with a new version of Windows. I lost a few things that were none essential to the Vista compatibility question and I don't want to lose more. Software is expensive. I am guessing I should just be satisfied with a computer that works fast and looks good and not try to keep up with the CompGeeks. What is the general feeling on this matter.

Also, I am buying a new laptop next week that comes with Win home, and I know I cannot stop updates in home version and I don't want to update to latest anniversary update. Any workaround to stop it ? (I wana stop the latest update as I know many users are reporting freezes etc..)

If you come on to forums looking for issues, you will find them.

Remember only a tiny fraction of people get issues, and those who do not rarely post to say things are fine.

RE. isos, they are updated occasionally eg after a few months. So it is unlikely an iso update is imminent.

Downloading updates

Once the Windows Update client determines which updates apply to your computer, it will begin downloading the updates, if you have selected the option to automatically download updates. It does this in the background without interrupting your normal use of the computer.

To ensure that your other downloads aren’t affected or slowed down because updates are downloading, Windows Update uses the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) technology which downloads updates using idle bandwidth. This technology ensures that Windows Update downloads only when no other active download is in progress on the computer. This allows you to smoothly carry on day-to-day activities even while updates are being downloaded in the background.

Windows Update also supports pausing and restarting downloads. You do not have to worry if you need to shut down your computer, or if you have lost your Internet connection while an update is downloading. Once the connection is reestablished, the download will continue where it left off.

That's the official Microsoft explanation of pausing/stopping/restarting automatic update downloads.

In reality, if there are a sizable number of updates being downloaded ( say, 25 or more ) then there is a chance that components of the updates, known as packages, may become corrupted.

According to the Intel web site there is an update to my mobo seen here:

Download Search Results

According to cpuid, my current bios version is 2/8/06. When I look at the above site, it says there is one for 1/9/2009. Where it says downloaded files, do I need to d/l all 4 files?

According to the updates, I am about 18 of them behind.

Here's one for you......Why is it when widows releases updates and you receive them, and you have more than one computer....networked or not......that each computer some running the exact same specs than others, that the updates for each computer arrive at different days and times? Very odd.....Just curious.

Answer:windows update question

You can check your update settings on each computer. They are probably set to check at different times. Microsoft releases its updates on Tuesdays, and if a computer is set to "automatically" update, it should happen then. If it is set to "check" for updates on, say, Thursday, then it won't happen till then.

Hi

We approve and push out Windows Update via our WSUS server. A recent update that applied to Office, broke a custom software package in our State Attorney office.

I uninstalled the update from all computers and it now their software works. However, it keeps reinstalling on a few of the computers (not all of them).

The update was changed to "unapproved" and no longer downloads from WSUS.

I went to the folder on the local PC where updates are downloaded and deleted them all from there. But it still reinstalled.

Any idea how to stop this update from installing over and over?

thanks

Answer:Windows Update Question

Maybe those PC's are getting updates from windows/microsoft updates instead of the wsus server?

I work for a small IT company and I'm the new guy in the office, so I'm usually the guy who has to repair the PCs that come in. I don't mind this process at all usually, until I get to windows freaking updates.

I've spent so much time troubleshooting windows updates since I've been here. Does anyone have any tips for getting updates to check properly the first time? Or any solutions you would recommend?

For example, I'm working on a PC now, just reinstalled Windows, but updates get stuck "Checking for updates". I tried booting in safe mode, stop/starting the services "Windows update" and "Background Intelligent Transfer Service", but it's still getting stuck. I'll try some other things, but it would be nice to not have to go through this every computer I reinstall Windows on.

If anyone knows the struggle I'm describing and has any suggestions for the current issue and/or tips for future issues, please let me know! Tytytttyytyty!

Does anyone know how long it should take to search for updates to Windows 7 HP 32Bit. Does the update checker download at the time of checking for updates..

Rite now its taking forever and been checking for updates for the last hour. Wi Fi connecting mind. But I have a good signal strength rated at excellent.

Answer:Windows 7 update question....

Depends on how out of date it is.

If you looked at the date for "Last checked for updates". If there's a ton of updates....might as well just leave it on, set it to auto-install updates, and go about your business (or go to bed, depending on what time it is).

Can't wait for Win10 for this reason - shared updates through P2P (both online and/or LAN) between other Win10 systems. Should give a faster Windows Update experience.

I would think that would suffice as I have not seen an update in a little while.
Doing it everyday while not using it is just gonna create too much unnecessary work in my opinion. Can't really hurt, but just might get annoying constantly checking for updates that aren't there. Just a thought.

I have just reformatted my PC after a faulty install of SP3 destroyed enough registry items to make it unworkable. It is an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and the operating system is Windows XP Home Edition SP2. After the Repair I switched off Automatic Updates while I made sure everything was working as it should. I have left the IE6 default player alone without updating to IE7 as I may later want to attempt to install SP3 again and it will save me having to uninstall it. My main browser is Mozilla Firefox which is also set as the default browser as I only use IE for updates.
When I was sure that my PC was in good order and all Programs, security, Firewall, AV etc was operating correctly I clicked on the Windows Updates shortcut in Start / All Programs. It was very slow to load but after downloading an Active X control and an update to the version of Updates installed I eventually got to the Automatic Update page where I clicked on the "Custom" link. It scanned my PC and the updates of Windows Installer and SP3. I unticked the box for SP3 and installed the Windows Installer 3.1 offered. After install and reboot I returned to Windows Update via the shortcut and clicked on Custom again. It found 101 updates and I again installed them and rebooted my PC. On reboot I again went back to Windows Update but now a minimised IE page appears on my desktop and Firefox opens with the following screen. I checked and if I click on the shortcut to IE6 it opens in IE6 but when I... Read more

I have my windows Xp Pro SP2 configured to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them". I chose this option to prevent automatic updates from installing options I do not want yet (i.e. Internet explorer 7)

Once in a while I help friends & relatives to reinstall windows, and most of them do not like IE7 either.
I can see when windows updates is downloading updates (yellow shield), but instead of giving me the opportunity to install them once finished, it just disappears once download is completed. Then when I am about to shut down the PC, it will try to install "all" downloaded updates before turning off. This would be the same as the hated "automatic updates" option.

I managed to run gpedit.msc and disable the option to install updates when turning the pc off, and also I found a way to manually install downloaded updates in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution, but since there are around 100 updates there to be installed, it is hard to find the unwanted updates.

Does anybody know how to make windows to show the YELLOW SHIELD in the system tray so I can choose the updates I want?

Answer:Windows update question

A little confusing.

You do realize that Xp is up to SP3 (which is all the 100 updates in one package)
Here it is: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx

This will probably fix many issues for you too
You can also manually download the SP3 (or order it on CD) to help others too

I just recieved this update ( Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) for the .NET Framework 3.5 to install from Microsoft and I haven't a clue as to what it is or does. I have not updated to service pack 3 as of yet because of the AMD issue. I'm very concerned and paranoid about doing any update since downloading (KB951748) and having my computer go berserk. I was able to remove that update and all is well now. So, my question is, how important is it to update this particular one?

Answer:Microsoft update question.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

This download installs Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. SP1 addresses issues that were found through a combination of customer and partner feedback, as well as internal testing. These service packs offer Visual Studio and .NET Framework users improvements in responsiveness, stability and performance.

I have an MS 7525 Mobo - its OEM product of s5220y HP Slim PC,I am trying everything I can to update the BIOS on it. HP's support site has zero BIOS update drivers. I can't find anything anywhere that is a legit BIOS update.Reason why I am trying to update BIOS is because there is a "System Fan Has Failed" error is appearing in POST. Reason why is because no fan is plugged in. It's a 3 wire device on the MOBO. I don't have any fans with all three wires, only positive and ground fans (2 wires).Another approach I tried was to go into the BIOS, that resides on the MOBO now, and go into the Hardware Monitor option to disable the fan, but there is no Hardware Monitor options in the BIOS.Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? Thanks!

Hi socketman

You aren't missing anything win 7 insatalls most of the correct driver on install, most ppl dont have to find any. As long as there are no "unknown devices" and everything is working your golden. I personally dont use a driver max type program because sometimes they give false up to date, or download the older drivers.

Hope this helps, and have fun with win 7 just make sure you backup

When I do my Vista updates it's telling me that my system utilities need to be updated and go to the manufactures website (in this case being HP) . Has this happened with anyone ? Does Vista check your manufactures website for updates ; for drivers ; bios's, etc ?

Thank You In advance ;

Answer:Vista update question ;

Nope, Vista does not check those sites. Nor does any other version of Windows. Nor has it done, ever!

You have to visit the manufacturer website yourself and locate suitable downloads for your system. The fact that Vista can detect and prompt you about missing/incompatible drivers and utilities is somewhat of a bonus, though. At least you get a warning about it

M2N-SL1 ASUS with dual core 5K, vista home premium. I reloaded OS after serious malfunctions then ran update. 74 updates installed this morning, 12/7/09. I found that two updates listed, KB935509 and KB937287 show they were installed in janruary of 2008, nearly a year ago, and windows will not let me uninstall them. How can these have been installed a year ago, I did a killdisk on the hard drive before doing the new OS installation. Also, the update ruined my sound. I get an awful squaking now. with 74 updates listed is there an easy way to find which caused the problem? would it be easier to just uninstall them all and start over? Windows won't let me uninstall all at once, must I do each of the 74 uninstalls one at a time?

Answer:question of update files

Hi there.

The updates that say they were installed in january 2008 are likely to have been created in january 2008 - and that's just when they're timestamped.

About your sound - being as you have reloaded the operating system (I also assume you formatted the primary drive), all of your drivers are likely to have been erased too.

To retrieve the drivers, simple go to your computer manufacturer's website and find the area of the site that they offer driver downloads. It is unlikely that the updates have caused either of the problems you listed.

Yours,
NiteMareUK

Answer:Driver update question

Hi Larry,

Asides from the usual security issues - yes, even drivers have loopholes which malware writers can exploit - new drivers often incorporate improvements to their performance. Many of these improvements will probably go unnoticed, but you might well use an application or play a game to which these improvements are targeted. These improvements can often allow a program to run whereas before it didn't (or, if it did, allow it to run without causing errors).

Hello December 28, 2011
Sorry if not the correct forum. Not quite sure where this should go.
My computer is a Win 7 64 Bit desktop
As some have said that the recent malware outbreak could be getting in through old Java I thought I should update. I found a link on BC that brought me to
A ?Verify Java Version page?. I clicked and let it check. I believe it said I had Java 6 update 29. Java 6 update 30 was the recommended download. I downloaded and installed. The Java site advised to use ADD/ Remove to uninstall older versions.
Under the programs listed in
Java 6 update 23 ( 64 bit)
Java 6 update 30

I am confused about the 64 bit version installed. If I remove it will update 30 , which I assume is 32 bit, be adequate?
I have Firefox 9.01 (X86en-US). I assume that this is 32 bit but cannot seem to find where to check for sure. I rarely us IE but do need the capability for some things.

Is it OK to uninstall Java 6 update 23 ( 64 bit) or should it be left on the system?
If I did not uninstall am I open to whatever malware targets the older Java versions?

Thanks

I am using Windows XP Professional SP3 and I recently had an issue with Windows Update that has occurred before and seems to be a more frequent occurrence of late. Basically WU will download and install an update. What's more it will indicate that the update has successfully installed and reboot the computer if necessary. The installation history will also indicate that it has successfully installed. However, once the computer comes back up it will ask to download and install the same update again. There have been instances where I have inadvertently installed the same update up to three times--all of them with a green check mark in the installation history and all of them showing in the Add/Remove Programs list! Reinstalling in Safe Mode makes no difference with some of these updates as the problem persists.

I know how to stop WU from asking me to download the same update. What I would like to know is the following---

1) Why does it download and install the update after it has installed it once already? Shouldn't this throw up some sort of a "red flag" for the software? Most other software that I have used will question an installation on top of what appears to be the same installation and you would think files associated with the working OS would do likewise.

2) Can the multiple installations of the same update cause issues? Should I remove all but one of them in the Add/Remove Programs?

Answer:Windows Update question...

Are you saying there are multiples listings in Add or Remove programs for the same update?

I'm currently using Office 2003 but want to update to 2007. Am I required to backup my info in Outlook or will the update automatically accept all my data (contacts, emails, etc)? Anything else I should know will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer:Office update question

I am not sure if it is automatic on a fresh installation of 2007, but I know for sure that Outlook 2007 can import in data (contacts, emails, calendars, etc) from older versions of Outlook through the Import/Export tool. Back up your data for sure. Note, depending on how many emails, contacts, and other data you have in outlook, the files may be very large. And backing up as well as importing them into Outlook 2007 will take a bit of time.

Where is the best place to get updated versions of a BIOS for a way old motherboard? The board I'm looking to update is

Board: AMD-75X-W977
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. 4.51 PG 10/01/99

Should I even worry about doing this?

Answer:MB BIOS Update Question

You should only flash your BIOS if you need to.

but, if you do, always check with the manufacturers site for the proper BIOS version. If the motherboard came inside an OEM computer like Gateway or Dell, etc, then you should go to their sites for any updates, as they more than likely don't have the standard retail version of the board.

If you come on to forums looking for issues, you will find them.

Remember only a tiny fraction of people get issues, and those who do not rarely post to say things are fine.

RE. isos, they are updated occasionally eg after a few months. So it is unlikely an iso update is imminent.

Hi: The links you posted don't show any specifics. If you are referring to the microcode update, you may have to depending on what processor you plan on installing, and I wouldn't know which would need it and which wouldn't.  Most likely any of the higher numbered quad core processors would. Here is the list of supported processors for the dc5800:   See page 8. https://data2.manualslib.com/pdf3/65/6443/644265-hp/compaq_dc5800.pdf?fe4dec4e22d0995b705e232286cc40...

Greetings.
Today my Win10 wanted to restart because of a new windows update, so I let it do that.
Now I have a new setting (??) under advanced options in "Update & recovery".
The last setting are like this:
"Choose what branch you'd like to get new previews builds from."!

Then a selectorbox, but only with one possibillity:
flb_awesome1501

Do I have some dirt in already? Or is this in fact a Microsoft updatesetting??

I think "flb_awesome1501" does not sound like a Microsoft parameter, but I can be wrong?

Answer:New update - and new question about branch

It is a planned update, not yet available. Microsoft have confessed to an error where the interoffice build was shown accidentally but not available. It was quickly withdrawn.

It is alleged that the new windows (10) will be called awesome.

Just let it ride until the next becomes available.

I'm not sure if my spybot is working properly cause when I tried auto update it said there weren't any new updates, but I know there is a new set of updates that just came out. So I download the most recent spybot update, double clicked it and, is that it? Is it updated now and is there some way to check inside spybot to see if the update installed OK, like does it say somewhere what's the date of the last updates installed (like it does in MS antispyware?)??

I always see post about needing to get patches..... but if i always run the automatic update am i fine or do i still need to getthe ones of the internet. For example with the blaster virus does it not install the update auto matically?

Answer:Question about Xp auto update

Auto update will bring down the updates and inform you that they are ready to install. You will still have to manually tell the pc to installl them. You should get an icon in the system tray when they become available.

Hi,

I have a question about java autoupdate. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and I read that there is no autoupdate support. But I occasionally receive a java update alert that does nothing when I click on the update button. Shortly after I received a warning from firefox that said "Firefox has found out that Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U31 6.0.310.5 is causing stability or security problems." It then blocked that plugin.

I was wondering if these updates are malicious? Should I be getting them if I'm running the 64 bit version of Java? Plus nothing seems to happen when I click on them.

I also noticed that my Java is on update 27 which is a very old version, the current being 33. I subsequently updated it manually by downloading it from the website.

I apologize if this isn't the appropriate forum to ask this but I wasn't able to find a more specific forum for java questions.

Thank you for any help.

Answer:Question about auto update

I've not heard that. What you may want to do is full scan with your updated antivirus program. Then uninstall all java from your control panel and firefox, and install the latest here: Download Free Java Software

It should give an option to autoupdate in advanced controls. Always have Java updated because this is a very easy method of attack

Hi, I just installed the latest ATI drivers for my video card, now in Windows update, there's an important update there for my ATI video card.

I'm reluctant to install it because I don't want it to override the latest driver from ATI that I just installed. Will the driver from Windows update do that?

Am I correct in assuming that the driver directly from the manufacturer is better than the one coming from Microsoft? Or are they just essentially the same? The driver from Win update is only 9mb +, and I think the driver from ATI is over 20mb.

If I decide not to install it, how do I keep it from reminding me over & over.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Driver Update Question

If you update your system specs, we can better advise you about this update.

The size difference is the CCC - Windows only has the driver, not the Catalyst software. The versions may be different, because it might depend on your hardware.

I'll first say I know not a thing and am trying to learn.

I am trying to play a game called Titan Quest but when I load the program it is slow as heck and glitches.

First I downloaded the latest version of the game but it didn't help any. I looked at trouble shooting and next downloaded DirectX 9. Still it ran like crap and now I'm trying to download the correct update for my graphics card but I can't seem to find it. I have a Nvidia Geforce Go 6200 and I keep on trying to get updates for it from Nvidia.com but When I go to run the update is says "The Nvidia driver could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will exit now."

As far as I can tell I'm just not getting the right update. Help!

Hi,Probably not much to worry about but i'd like to ask.2 weeks ago i repaired my system and routinely updated from windows. Freeserve disconnect your connection after 2 hours and when downloading SP1 i was disconnected. I had got down to 20mb out of 30. After reconnecting it found itself and continued but now it was reading 60mb instead of 20mb and almost 4 hours had been added on. I accepted this after posting a thread on here suggesting all was ok. I was helping a friend setup his brand new computer and installed SP1 starting from 30mb and his disconected aswell (freeserve) but found itself and continued as normal.I'm thinking that i've downloaded way too much and something i have noticed is a sluggish system, options and other stuff seem to take longer to open with more HDD noise.Sorry for detailing this too much but i wanted to avoid questions. Many thanksMy PC specs are:Windows XP 512mb ram, Radeon 9000 pro 64mb, 2100 Athlon processor,
