Severe Monitor crash problem!!!!Help!

Question: Severe Monitor crash problem!!!!Help!

I have this problem with my 15" LCD AL1511 Monitor. I think that the problem can be fixed by buying a larger size but i want to find an alternative. Whenever i am playing full screen game (high graphic or not...i know the comp isn't the problem) the monitor at some point(10 mins, one hour etc) just goes black and its shows a box saying "No Signal" . The only option then is rebooting my comp.Sometimes i can fix this by changing the resolution. This is a real prob because there are lots of games i haven't been able to play due to this. Like right now..i just d/l Halo for PC..and it gets that problems. Oh and the problem doesn't always happen on full screen games only sometimes....but always on the same gamesNew: i got also an 17" LCD Pro-view and it seems way better...it has like 10 types of resolutions unlike my other one that has 3..only.Please NOTE : my computer can handle these games perfectly(no lag or anything...plus it also happens in a 39mb game and on ...Maplestory...lol) So i doubt my Alienware is the problemHelp for any of these would be perfect. Any help is greatly appreciated. Edit/Delete Message

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Severe Monitor crash problem!!!!Help!

HiThere are only 4 options I can think of that might cause this.Try them in this order:1. Your power settings in XP might be turning off your monitor, unlikely because you are using the PC but worth checking anyway.Look in control panel > Power Options, look at the monitor option, select turn off monitor, set it to 'never'.2. Your video card or PC could be overheating, take the side off your PC, (as long as this will not void warranty) check all fans are running.Run you PC for a while with the case open to increase airflow for a while.3. Faulty Monitor <---- Do you have access to another you can try?4. Faulty Video card. <---- Do you have access to another you can try?

Hello, I have a very severe problem with IE8 - if a browser window crashes when opening a site, which happens several times a day, I should press "End now", and then all other IE windows are closed.

Are you experience the same thing? Is there any solution? At least to close only the window that is blocked?

Answer:IE8 severe problem - all windows crash

In IE, "End now" refers to IE itself, not just to that particular page.
It's IE's willingness to fall over to often that drove me to Mozilla Firefox, though I have to say that IE9 seems much more robust & stable (I appreciate XP can't run IE9 though).

I had a severe crash. I have a Vaio F series with Win7 home premium. The issue started after doing an update from microsoft for windows I also updated to IE 9 even though I do not use it. At first I noticed the browser hanging. Pages would only load if I was moving the cursor. I figured it would all clear in the morning when I restarted. Would not even boot. Tried many things over several days. Media Tools pro showed me my files were still there. Finally was able to get the assist button to work and moved my files to ext HDD first thing. Right now having Bad image errors, MSVCR80.dll errors and a Microsoft .NET Framework unhandled exception error. Any help appreciated. Thanks, leiifedited by moderator: remove un-requested log

Answer:Had severe crash got system up but errors

I see the moderator removed the hijackthis log . Can I post links to images of some of the errors I am having now? I have 5 or 6 errors when I start the computer. Some of my shortcuts don't work. Notepad links are dead. Some programs don't work because of some .net error or maybe it is another reason. I have errors all over.

My P50 crashes (hard reboot, not even a blue sceen!) while zooming on Google Maps. Operating System: Windows 10 Pro Steps to reproduce:Start Google Chrome (Version 49.0.2623.87 m) or Firefox (45.0)Open Google Maps: maps.google.comZoom in and out a few times (using mouse weel or plus/minus-buttons)Watch the P50 crash...Is this just my P50 or is this a general issue? Is there a workaround?

Answer:Severe Crash P50 while zooming in Google Maps

I have a similar experience with No BSOD, only rebooting. When using graphic-intensive applications with integrated graphics, the computer crashes hard almost instantly. I first thought of overheating, but after some testing, it was not the case. It helped when open the application with Nvidia-gpu instead. Now it never crashes! Software failure and not hardware. I tested to play a game with highest and lowest graphicsetting, the computer always restarts when using integrated graphic card. Never crashes when using Nvidia gpu.

I would look for updated video drivers for your card.
If that doesn't work, looks like you need a new monitor.

CPU: AMD Phenom 9550
GPU1: nV 580 GTX
GPU2: nV 280 GTX (PhysX only)
Monitor: Hanns-G HG281D

Issue:

I have a Haans-G HG281D monitor that has slowly developed a problem waking up.

Early on, I could move my mouse and hit Win-E on the keyboard to launch Windows Explorer and within about 5 minutes it would blink on, blink off, blink on a bit longer, and after a few more progressively longer blinks, it would stay on. The power indicator light stays amber until the first blink, and alternates each blink, as it should.

Over the last year or so, the time it takes to wake up has gotten progressively longer on average but isn't consistent. And now, sometimes it won't wake up at all.

Often when it wakes up it appears to have lost its horizontal hold, with the image stairstepping down the screen towards the right. This can sometimes be alleviated by entering the secure desktop and coming right back. Other times (and this is REALLY tricky) I have to enter the display control panel and change the resolution. Once the new resolution is applied the hold returns to normal. I cancel the resolution change and go on as usual.

The odd thing is, if you unplug the HDMI cable or restart the PC via remote desktop through my phone, the "signal lost, check cable" notification comes right up. So the issue seems to be isolated to the mechanism that triggers the screen to wake up upon a signal being detected on a cable.

So I purchased this monitor at Staples last weekend.  I installed it, and also the HP Support Assistant.  When finished, I then found I was still operating under the Windows "generic pnp monitor" driver.HP Support Assistant was no help at all - it could not recognize that I am using a HP monitor. So I called HP Tech support today - as it turned out, this is off-shore support.  After finally convincing them that I indeed had an HP device that was under warranty, I was connected with another off-shore technician, who proceeded to "instruct me" that there are NO HP DRIVERS - everything uses generic drivers.  At this point, I realized that I was being fed a lot of bovine manure.  When I asked why HP Support Assistant did not see the monitor on my system, he said it was not supposed to see the monitor, only the mainframe pc.  I told him that he was not very helpful, and ended the call. So I dug some more, and sure enough, I found HP27vc LCD Monitor driver, sp73128.exe.  I installed this, and now my Monitor is running with the HP driver,  and not the generic one. I checked HP Support Assistant once more, wondering that if the correct driver was now installed, it might now see the monitor, but alas, it still does not see it. Is it worthwhile to keep this HP Support Assistant installed ?  I mean, since it does not see the monitor, how can it be of any use to me ? Any comments or thoughts appreciated ceetiger

Answer:Tech support a severe disappointment - HP monitor drivers

Hi: I would imagine that you may get all kinds of varying opinions regarding the usefulness of the HP Support Assistant (HPSA) software. That is one of the first programs I uninstall when I get a HP PC. As you found out, you can check your HP product's support page for new drivers (or drivers in general). One of the things that scares me is that some folks have the HPSA software running automatically, and it will download and install software updates without the user knowing it. This can be particularly dangerous if it downloads and installs a BIOS update to the PC, and you are working on the PC during this process.  You may not even know it is running, or casually dismiss any notifications as you are busy (I do that now and then), and if you were to shut down your PC during a BIOS update, you end up with a dead PC. I have read a few forum posts where this has indeed happened to a few unfortunate folks. You can set the program to notify you only, and then you chose when and what updates to install. I just get rid of it...one more application running in the background to slow down your PC. Run the disk cleanup and optimization utilities at least once a month to keep your PC running fine.

Sorry for the long text, I'm trying to send as much information i have.

Hello forums!
A few years ago i built a new gaming pc because i wanted to be able to play high quality games. But since day 1 i've had nothing but problems. Whenever i play one of my high quality games such as "Assassins Creed, Tomb Raider, Battlefield 3 or Primal Carnage" the monitor goes completely blank showing a "no signal to monitor" sign after gaming for between 5 minutes to up to 2-3 hours. The monitor sometimes also shows different color stripes either for examples: orange, pink or grey. The sound of my friends on skype usually keeps going for about 20 seconds before going silent, the sound of the game shuts off instantly or goes in a loop or starts with a loud buzzing sound. The fans and the LED's on my pc are still going but i can't control anything on the pc making me have to force restart my pc on the power button.
I've been on this forum before talking to this guy who is helping me but he's been quite busy lately so i need some extra help.
I've updated all drivers to latest, i never overheat, the GPU does not go over 51C when gaming and CPU never goes over 51C either.
I've upgraded my 650W powersupply to a 850W power supply and is one of the highest rated best performance power supplies you can find.
I tried to RMA my graphics card but they found nothing wrong with it and sent it back.
I bought two new sticks of RAM 4GB each, still... Read more

I made a different post about this but it's kind of died now and i still need help you can view it here:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=107719

My problem is whenever i'm playing games, it appears i have well low FPS or LAG, I have only just thought about the fps after installing CS:S and seeing that i'm playing it at 9 fps.

I can play counter strike, but not counter-strike source. Also i have this problem with battlefield ( all games). I can play Dawn of War but when there is alot of stuff going on on the battlefield it lags, i dont mind about that.

Do you reckon its because First person shooters uses up alot of system resources.

I meet the reccomended specs on all of these games so they should work.

I had this problem before i installed my graphics card ( nvidia geforce 6600), so either i hav'nt installed it properly or it's not a graphics problem.

I think this is quite an advanced problem.

While it could be numerous problems one thing that does concern me is from the looks of the other post your case temps were very high for a machine on idle, did you get this sorted out and what do your temps look like as of today. Only reason I ask is it might be possible that those temps caused some pretty bad wear and tear on the components.

Also have you checked to see if you had any type of Virus, Spyware or Adware on the machine or any background program that would eat up a lot of resources (i.e: File Sharing programs, messengers, Office programs or photoshop programs) while you are playing a game? Your RAM could also be another issue...some people would disagree but, I've always believed that 768 as opposed from 512MB of ram really makes no difference and I've done benchmarks myself on the matter and 6-7 MB/s and a little less than 1-2 latency decrease isn't all that much to really brag about.

Well I guess any is better than none right, I personally would suggest 1GB, 1GB now days is minimum for any high end game and soon even that won't be enough. Something you could try is re-seat your Video Card and possibly even your RAM just to be sure, make sure they are firmly seated and no dust is interfering. Do be sure to update your drivers as well for your video card, though I don't see this as a HUGE factor in the matter unless you have never installed them but you never know.

So, i then tried to to hit f12 to o to the boot device menu and try to boot from cd or dvd. after i clicked that it says 'press any key to reboot from cd or dvd' so i pressed a key. Then it brought me to a black screen with a loading bar, there i thought finally some progress then it takes me to a page (when the loading bar has loaded) were it says:

1. Insert the windows installation disc and restart the computer
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next.!"

Question: severe problem

Am having a sever problem with 1 users account on XP . It appears to have only afected 1 user account. The problem seams to have occured right after an update to adobe acrobat reader (coincidence maybe). Can not install any new software (error 82 says last file run is main .exe). Can`t update avast,ewido,ad-aware, or spybot from that users account. The other users accounts seams to work fine but find nothin on any of the scans other than AVG it says that the boot record ,system volume, and 3 of the ini files have changed and Ad-aware finds 11 items but when trying to remove them it locks. Hijack this can not be run on the affected user account as it says that it is not a valid picture file. Safe mode under the affected user account (administrator privlages) is no diferent. When trying to run chkdsk from a comand promt in safe mode it says that the system volume is in use by another aplication and have to scedual a scan on the next reboot. This finds nothing aswell. Repair was also tried from the Xp cd to no avail either. All of the online scans (Symantec , Panda soft, Trend Micro....etc) will not run on this account and find nothing on the other accounts. Any ideas of how to fix this would be great. After 2 weeks of spending all my spare time trying to fix this with all the methods that I know of I am still just beating my head against the wall .......ggggggggrrrrrrrrr
Thanx for any help at all in advance

Question: Severe Problem

Hello, I recently wanted to update my Anti Virus Program named Kaspersky.
I was trying to update my 2011 version to the 2012 version.
I inserted the Kaspersky Disc during my computer startup, it than took me to Install Kaspersky, I entered all the details like Language, ect. After I entered it, it started to install/update. Now while it was installing/updating I've accidently hit the Open tray and Reset button!
So the disc tray opened and my computer restarted while it was installing/updating. It started up again, and I went back to the Install disc again. After going through the options again, it showed the Kaspersky window and up the top in red it said "Databases corrupt". I tried re installing it again but it is still saying that it is Corrupted, I tried roll back, but that didn't work either. So I just decided to exit it and go to my desktop.
I restarted my computer and took the disc out, after a minute or so I got a blue screen saying "Windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer" and it said something else saying "Disable or uninstall any Anti virus, disc defragmentation, or backup utilities".
I got out the Windows Vista disc and put it in, restarted and loaded the disc. I went to "Repair my computer" then "Repair startup files" After a while it finished, I restarted. I didn't get the blue screen, but instead I just got a black screen with my cursor on it. I can move it around and nothing else, I cannot bri... Read more

Answer:I have a severe problem

Boot your PC into safe mode by tapping F8 while your computer boots up.

It will give you a menu, select "Safe Mode" (with networking or command prompt either way doesn't matter).

Sign in with the default administrator account (username: Administrator pass: leave password blank unless you set a password when you installed windows). This will allow you to change other user accounts.

Question: Severe Lag Problem

I have this problem with lag when i open a folder
but not when im viewing the desktop or when im running an application (except once again, when a folder is open)
I have Scanned with norton 2003 and up to date virus definitions
Spyware Doctor

I was using battle.net frequently when i first noticed the "virus"

I had tried to ctrl+alt+Delete it when i first noticed my computer was lagging because i can usually use its process name to locate and remove it
but when i opened my task manager/process manager there was something blinking in and out of the processes list too fast to read the name and it usually
appears between USBsircs.exe and Winlogin.exe (near the bottom of the list
Normally my CPU Usage is 3-9% when i have multiple browser windows open. even now when the file is flashing in and out of the processes list my cpu usage is 0-13% but when i open a folder (even a blank folder on the desktop) my CPU usage shoots up to 100% and stays 98-100 untill i close the folder again.
it appears to be a 71,300kb (approx) file that repeatedly requests open and close

i have no problem accessing the items in folders through the taskbar's Desktop tab but if i open a folder that way the lag comes back

If i can not find a way to get rid of it i was thinking about system restoring

I am running a 2.66ghz pentium 4 with 512mb ram and WinXP Home edition service pack 1 i usually keep spyware to a minimum on my computer. but im really stumped on this one.

We have a one month old HP Pc, running Windows XP SP2. Everything was running great until the other day. We made several changes to the system last week and things seemed fine until I booted it up the next day. Firstly we added an ADSL gateway... everything was fine, my partner was able to wirelessly access the network too. I then networked our HP Photosmart 2610 all-in-one to the second ethernet port on the gateway. At this point I was told to shutdown the Norton firewall which we have installed. I am concerned that at this point something has infected the PC. On start-up of the pc i am receiving a message saying that theGeneric Host Process for WIN32 services has been shut down to prevent security exploits. Hey guys just recently i was trying to reformat on my older computer.. So i did the usual and when it came time to delete the partition it didnt want to let me. sayed something like "There are files on this partition needed to setup windows" so it couldn't delete the partition..... So i had no idea what that was so i decided to leave it how it is and not to reformat anymore.

But now the PROBLEM is that everytime i boot up the machine it comes up with the option of choosing which Operating system
Windows XP Home
Windows Installation
So i now cannot boot up normally i gotta click boot from windows xp Home every single time... Does anyone know how to fix this problem please It is very important for my to fix this... I wanted to my computer to be for the better and i ended up making it worse off than it was ....

I can still acess my desktop on it.. but having to choose Windows Xp home boot up every single time gets quite annoying and not very pleasent for anyone who would be using this computer (such as my father, which i was planning to give this computer to)... Maybe someone can tell me what the whole thing about the "There are files on this partition needed to setup windows" so it couldn't delete the partition is about.. How to bypass this to do a clean install. or how to get these files that i dont know about.

Or if someone knows how to bypass that so it never asks me where i want to boot from, so that its default boot is from Windows Xp.. not... Read more

Answer:Severe Problem I Think?

Yep, you can fix this by editing the boot.ini file. You'll have to change the attributes on the file so you can read/write to it. It's located in the root of your boot drive (usually C:\)But, before editing it, I'd suggest reading this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022/After that it's basically just locating the entry for "Windows Installation" and removing it.

Hi everyone, i've just finished the end of a long day trying to fix my partners pc, the problems in no particular order are:

Unable to install updates (i can download)
I can start a virus scan (using microsofts essentials) but cannot finish it
I cannot enter internet options from control panel or IE8' toolbar
Almost all attempts to resolve this seem to be blocked either by preventing a download into a folder or the resetting of software
Anti-virus software resets to pre update state at random times and constantly reverts to 'at risk'
the pc is running
WIN XP HE
IE8
Service Pack 3 is listed in add/remove programs
2.6ghz single

I have tried about 18 different types of repair including:

Using start > run and addresses to bypass internet options - I had success with one and got in but as soon as i changed anything it just changed itself back, there was nothing that would indicate this problem.
I trawled through the internet logs for all updates and checked error codes, downloading various tools and fixit's from MS in the process
Tried various scans without success
Went through many forums looking at the older posts which appear to have had the same problem
Searched through the registry for the NOWINDOWSOPTION, (does not appear to be in my system)

Read more

Hello.. good lord man.. I have never seen an issue get worse trying to repair it.. You seemed to have followed steps that would have fixed this. Except a clean Install . If you did have anything important . try this first : Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek Post back if you can save any of your important stuff.. Then if that works. means your hard drive should be okay. If so . you could try this : Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

Schedule your anti vius to do a boot time scan.

If that doesnt get rid of it try super anti spyware.

One of these 2 should make it go away.

If not post back and we can take further steps with the security people.

Hey everyone, stumbled upon this site looking for some help with a real bad problem involving my audio on my PC. I'm not a newbie when it comes to computers so I've tried a lot of things to solve my problem. Let me start out by stating the problem, that's always a good idea . iTunes highlights files I double click and puts them in the display bar to be played but the time remains at 0:00. I thought this was a contained issue so I removed and reinstalled iTunes and got the same error. Shortly after, I ran into a similar error involving Windows Media Player and began troubleshooting it how I know how to. I system restored....nothing. Removed Audio Drivers and reinstalled them, nothing. I removed all my codecs and reinstalled them, nothing. I virus and spyware scanned using Ad-Aware, spybot and norton 360 (which I hate) and got no results. So I got desperate and contacted HP, the maker of my m8120n and they gave me some half assed solution which wound up in me losing my system sound which was the only sound I had. So now I'm completely screwed, me being big on music, I'm curled up in a corner in the fetal position. They wanted me to use the recovery discs they sent me but the dumbnuts sent me the wrong Recovery Discs when I ordered them. I have no Vista DVDs or CDs does anyone have a solution?

Help!  I'm running Windows XP Pro. Have a virus that has set my desktop background with a black box on a blue background. In the box a message says "Spyware Infection" underneath is some blurb about windows etc.I can't change the background either from "properties" or from clicking on one of my pictures and setting as a background all this seems to have been turned off PLUS I can't even do a roll-back ( clever ba^?*#ds).  I've run AVG FREE and picked up several trojans (see below)startpage.vmPSW.LDpinch.SIProxy.ATCclicker.AKWDownloader.generic.KSHClicker.AKW  (repeat)Proxy.ATC (repeat)I clean up these with AVG and in  the morning they're back!  When I fire up explorer I get taken to some spoof anti virus/spyware page and that's when all this crap gets downloaded.  I managed to find that culprit and remove it and I changed my start page back to where I wanted to go but I'm stuck on this background and stopping the re-infestation.  Can anyone help please?

Answer:Severe virus problem

These are NOT being cleaned up, or they wouldn't come back. Go to the virus section and download the spyware/adware/trojan freeware and do them and AVG in safe mode witht system restore off.

I have two hdd's one of 160gb (os/programs)((SATA)) and one of 60gb (documents)((IDE)) and for some , wierd reason, when i try to fresh install windows vista OR xp onto the drive it fails. This is because it fails to create a NTFS partition. The hard disc is okay because i have checked both cables and drives in an independant box seperately. I have used Hiren's boot CD and run and tried every app i thought applicable. Such as disc formatters and the like. No luck. I have flashed the BIOS several times but nothing. I dont know if any of you have ever come across this before, but it certainly baffled me, and normally this is the sort of thing i can fix myself.Im only 15 but i know my stuff..Any help is much appriciated.Im worried it may be a hardware failure.Vista says : Windows is unable to find a volume suitable for installation (despite formatting it maany times)XP Says: There is no NTFS drive to install to. (also formatted)Want to know the saddest thing? Im running Linux SUSE 10.3 with NO PROBLEMS at all.(disc even formats correctly, i have asked my dad who is a free lance technician: nothing =( ) But its annoying because i cant get the software i need for schoolwork, on linux.oh and if i hadnt ever read your mag.. i wouldnt have had the confidence to fix stuff myself, and i would have signed up sooner. So thanks for anyone who can help me!Nick

I'm trying to help a senior witrh a new wireless printer he has purchased. I installed a USB 2 PCI card for him then tried to boot. After several minutes the system advised that it was short on virtual memory and resized the pagefile. It took over 30 minutes to get to the point where I could enter msconfig to disable a couple of the obvious resource hogs, (camera monitoring app's, etc). Rebooted again and it was better but still takes in excess of 10 minutes to be able to start any applications. He has had this system for a few years and performance has bever been a big problem in the past.

I took the HJT log included here and wondered if anyone can see anything obvious that might be aggravating the startup time problems.

Hi guys. I will start from the top and explain the problem.

I was extracting some files with WinZip and the PC froze. So I pressed the reset button on the front of the box. It would go to the Windows XP Home Edition boot screen, and then after that it would go to a black screen (and stay there forever).

So I tried the FreeSBIE bootable CD to make sure something else (ram or something) wasn't causing a problem. That performed flawlessly.

Then I tried to boot into safe mode, and after taking almost 10 minutes it finally booted in. Then I decided to try to boot normally into Windows again. It finally gets past the XP Bootup screen and finally comes to the XP Welcome screen. I login and it takes an unconsiderably long time to boot to my desktop.

Then, I double click a folder and it freezes up again. I repeat this process and it continues to lock up.

If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

-Mark

P.S. I'm on a Linux PC right now because the other one just keeps freezing.

My colleague is having a serious problem with her outlook. Some messages are stuck in the outbox and seem to be jamming up the entire programme. Nothing can be sent, nothing can be exported, the error message says "the messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook". While trying to move these messages to the outbox, they seemingly vanished entirely. Restarting Outlook does not help.

The contacts book is huge and valuable but cannot be moved or exported so a reinstall is an extremely last resort..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Hey guys, first post here!

As of recent, the audio on my computer has slowed down/become distorted/choppy etc. I've downloaded new sound card drivers & mobo drivers, reinstalled my sound card via device manager, as well as reinstalling the IDE. I don't think the amount of processes has much to do with this as it would even do it if the only major program opened was my media player (itunes... =\)

I'm at a complete loss of what to do next, I've never encountered anything like this before!

Here is a speccy shot of my computer system:

Operating System
MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3
CPU
Intel Pentium D 805
SmithField 90nm Technology
RAM
31.9GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 200MHz 4-4-4-12
Motherboard

SNKRILC I7WDEVW SCSI CdRom Device
SNKRILC I7WDEVW SCSI CdRom Device

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Okay. I have seemingly done something very stupid, which has lead to not being able to boot my Windows XP.

A little while ago, I installed ubuntu. And it had the GRUB booting menu so that I could boot either Windows XP or linux. I did the partioning and it was all working fine. But recently, I did something on Windows, I replaced my user32.dll with a different user32.dll in hope to fix a problem I was experiencing. I do not know the origon of this problem, but it said that the dll was not working properly and that I should contact the vendor for another one. So, I downloaded a user32.dll from a trusted site, which I use for many missing dlls - http://www.dll-files.com. But when I rebooted, I got a blue background and a scary looking mesage saying the same thing as what I got before. But this time, I couldnt do anything. The only thing I could do was turn off my computer. I rebooted and rebooted, I always got this message. But I still had my GRUB boot menu. I thought, I will run windows in recovery mode from the boot menu. I did so, And did a partial recovery. Which would maintain all my data but restore all the factory settings. After doing this, and reboobting, I got my normal Packard Bell screen at with the "F2 for BIOS" etc. And then on to the GRUB boot menu. Except, the menu was gone. It just said, "loading GRUB boot" etc. And then it went back to the Packard Bell screen! It was a vicous circle. So I thought, "I will run my bootable G-parted dis... Read more

Hi. First of all, I'm aware that this could very well be a hardware issue, and therefore, something that I'll need to go a computer repair store for (as I'm not really capable of handling such things myself). Just in case there's any way to resolve it through Windows, though, I thought I'd take a shot and ask. Basically, to make a long story short, my original video card's fan started making a loud noise, so I needed to get a new one. I had someone local over to the house to install it (an NVIDIA) for me, but it caused my computer to freeze repeatedly, so we determined it was incompatible with something else in my computer. I then got an ATI (which is also what my original card was -- the one which worked fine until the fan started breaking down).

As soon as he installed it, something was wrong -- the color was severely off. It's kind of hard to describe in words, but the colors were kind of "washed out." For example, what is supposed to be blue is more like a neon green-type color. After playing around with it for a few minutes (I have no idea what he did), it seemed to be fixed. However, over the next few days, the color flickered a bit before stabilizing again. For the past few weeks it had been okay, but then suddenly today, the color went bad again and is now stuck in "washed out" mode. Does anyone know what might be wrong here and how to fix it? Please let me know. Thanks!

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to read this. I have had my *Toshiba M50* since 2006 and it has been great overall. Until recently the screen has begun to play up - it would go kinda "inverted", everything becoming whitewashed and blurry but readable - just. Very annoying and very hard to describe. I can post a picture if anyone doesnt picture what I mean. I found if I applied pressure to the top centre of the screen it would come right. I thought it was just a loose connection and as the machine is well out of warranty, I pulled apart the LCD assembly and I think I made it worse, not better. Now the screen is still whitewashed, and the images appear reallly slowly, especially when changing resoultions/video modes.

I guess the general questions I am tossing out here: Does this sound a common problem, and does it require a new LCD screen? (I think the inverter is fine). Are replacement LCDs easy to come by? Is there any "elimination" tests I can do myself? I have confirmed the external graphics port works.

Could this be the justification to finally buy that MacBook???
Seriously though, any ideas are appreciated.

Have you tried to test it with external monitor?
It will be interesting to know if the same is shown on external one. If not then is probably display defective and must be replaced.

I have aDell Inspiron 1100 running WinXp.Spyware Doctor has identified:Trojan Virtuemode,RootKit Agent, and Adware Components.Claria. 7 threats ,238 infections.
Here's the problem: slow bootup and when background and icons appear, the icons and start programs disappear before I can get to click on one to run it! The background image stays, but after 15 to 30 seconds icons will again appear. This sequence continues until it finally stops and only the background image is shown. This may be after 5 or more minutes when it finally stops the sequence.
I was once able to run Spyware Doctor which identified the malware, but it couldn't remove them..I had the freeware version.
It will not read a CD so I can't do a restore or reinstall.
Could I use a flash drive with Spybot or other program to clean this stuff out?

Or, are there any good suggestions to clean this up.

I bought a 1TB WD external HDD, WDBAAU0010HBK, a few months ago. Unfortunately my laptop broke before I ever got to use it, though I can verify that it worked on other computers. My laptop had a harddrive fault and I thought I was likely to lose all my data if I tried to repair it myself, so I downloaded Ultimate Boot CD (a mix of programs you can use to do various things with your computer from booting from the cd). Using this, I had hoped to copy everything from my laptop to my shiny new hard drive.

Unfortunately things didn't work out as planned. Shortly after I initiated a program which was to copy everything over, the laptop shut down as the power cable was faulty. The program I had used was to copy the hard drives exactly, including the size of the drive, so when I looked at the WD HDD on another computer, it had less than a GB total space. At this point I tried to do a capacity restore, but the few programs I tried couldn't work with USB drives. I then fixed my laptop so I ignored this problem for a few months.

Recently, I tried again, but a program called HDD capacity restore wouldn't work as the hard drive was locked with a password. The hard drive was assigned a letter and was recognised, but was inaccessible. I tried using Ultimate Boot CD again, using a tool called CopyWipe, to format the harddrive, but again the process was interrupted at 1% due to power failure.

Now the HDD doesn't appear in My Computer or Disk Management, but appears in ... Read more

Hi there I just noticed that my Lenovo S10e does not run on battery anymore. When the AC is plugged in, it works all fine, but the battery led is flashing blue. Without the AC, the lights go on and the fan seems to start, but all is dead within a maximum of 1 second. Any ideas? I am out of warranty, it seems ... I have tried all tricks I could google like removing the battery and pressing the power button ... please help!! Thanks in advance, dnh

Answer:Severe battery problem

Hi and welcome, try and proof first before you buy a new battery or something other...be sure that battery connector seat & is correct locked by the battery holder..there is a special charge behaviour... that could be happen when you use 3th party battery or use of  original battery that have problems to charge...  kind re-conditioning the battery...
best check this,   That you didnt use the S10e meanwhile this procedure...
Blue - blinking means battery will charge in save mode ... 0 -30 % takes 4-5h 100% 15 hours !!thats for computer with 3 cell , with 6 cell battery near double the time a whole day to charge !!!...between these time it could be possible blinking for a short time change colour to orange !! and switch back to blue-blinking.

When this long procedure is successful, battery wil normally charged around 2:45 h (6-cell) ..

Hi All,

I have two files that I cannot not delete and had started various fixes to resolve this issue. Posted it recently on the Software Forum and was advised to forward my issue to the Malware section.

My computer I suspect is filled with problems. Here is the list:
1. Cannot delete two files - apparently the path is missing. Checked the disk for integrity and the results were fine
2. Cannot access the internet
3. Sound is diabled. Cannot access the controls - grayed out areas in the volume section under Control Panel
4. Restore points are missing and cannot roll back
5. Antivirus: Avast does not function. Cannot generate report
6. Some of the USB sockets do not work and cannot recognize new USB insertions
7. No sound during Windows boot-up
8. Cannot access safe mode either with F8 or MSConfig
9. Lower task bar look different and many of the start-up icons are missing

Please help and am frustrated. Thanks in advance for all your help.:-o

Building on a previous problem, my computer, after the HP startup screen, refuses to boot to XP. It just sits there at the HP logo screen and stalls, not doing a thing. Only when I press F1 (don't even know what the f*** this is supposed to do), the screen goes blank, you see the white hashed progress bar at the bottom of the screen, then XP starts up.

When I finally get XP running, it would tell me that the RPC terminated unexpectantly, so windows has to shut down. People told me this meant I have the blaster virus. But after changing the registry RPC settings to not shutdown, downloading every patch known to man from microsoft, running 8 seperate virus scans (including my version of Norton (which is fully updated but never caught this supposed "virus") and the online housecall scan), and even running the Symantec repair tools for a bunch of different viruses including blaster - none of them found a thing. So I'm at a loss. All I want is my comp to start up normally so I can use the recovery disks. When I try the 'F1' trick with the disks, I just get this "Wrong Model Notebook" message, and end up stuck in DOS.

Any thoughts, ideas, general rants against HP would be greatly appeciated...Thanks...

Hey, this question mayor may not already be asked on here, but I couldn't find anything when I searched. I recently upgraded from Vista to 7 Ultimate, and I am loving the experience so far. But, I have ran into one slight problem, and that deals with the browser. I usually use Safari 4, or Firefox, they are both excellent browsers. But, when I go to apple.com, and click on the mac tab, the black box will not scroll at all, the bar will move, but the items will not. I also go to a website where I can watch two and a half men, and you have to click on an arrow to drop down a menu, this also will not work. I also go to thecreativeone.tv | social blog, technology news, live broadcasts, advertising opportunities, and more! - Social Blog and when you hover over the menu items, a drop down menu appears, but now does not appear. All of this occurred after I installed Windows 7, so this has to be a problem from it. If anyone has a solution please let me know. Oh, this also happens when I use IE too.

Answer:Severe browser problem

Hello megajoe16,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I have tried both of those sites with IE 32 and 64 bit and Firefox 32 bit and had none of the problems you describe. Are you having any problems with other sites? What version of FF are you using?

Hi all, I really hope you can help me out here as I am totally stuck! Basically my Father needed some maintenance doing on his laptop running Windows XP.

First I ran windows washer 5.0 and then ran fix it utilities, cleared out invalid registry links and then cleared up lots of unused icons on the desktop with the intention of doing a full defrag after rebooting.

Normally this would not be a problem however; his desktop changed to this after rebooting, screenshot here http://www.geocities.com/primusheat/stuck.gif

Do not get me wrong, I am more than above average computer user mainly Linux and BSD however I cannot get the screen to change back to normal.

These are the current problems I am having since the reboot. A) I cannot drag a desktop icon into position or drag an item into the recycle bin. The only way is too right click and select delete. B) In the control panel the taskbar and start menu icon is there but nothing happens when I double click it. The only way I can change the taskbar setting is to right click on the taskbar itself to access the settings.

So far yes I have tried all the usual things, like changing the themes, display etc; however you will see from the screenshot, I cannot get rid of the panel on the left of the desktop and it is incredibly annoying.

I am a strong believer in RTFM and yes I have been through google and read the help files etc to no avail. Maybe it is something simple I am overlooking and as my mind works in Unix/Linux, Windows is n... Read more

so i've been having some crazy keyboard problems today. out of nowhere, my keyboard totally stopped functioning. i use a dell dimension pc and it was the keyboard that came bundled with the pc. my sister has the same keyboard, so i tried plugging hers into my computer and it still didn't work. both used PS/2 ports and functioned perfectly when plugged into my laptop (from which i am currently typing this post).

my pc recognized that the keyboard had an error at first, and the device manager said that the keyboard "failed to start" i thought the PS/2 port might be the problem, so i bought a PS/2 to USB adapter. the keyboard still didn't work. i returned the adapter and bought a logitech cordless desktop EX100 mouse/keyboard combo. it plugs into a USB port, which i thought would let me know if a defective PS/2 port was my problem.

i set everything up as instructed, and the mouse worked perfectly. the keyboard has some extra function keys that pull up the calculator, raise and lower the volume, etc, and all of those work fine. but the actual letter/number/punctuation keys don't work. the computer says that the keyboard is installed fine and should work properly.

i looked on the logitech website, and my specific model isn't even listed on the site. windows couldn't find any driver updates either. i followed the windows troubleshooting advice and uninstalled the device, rebooted, and reinstalled it, which worked to no avail.

Ok the comp was fine until moved then when it came on it said hardware changes go to the proper boot device. It said IEF device as the first booting device anyhow that was switched back to the hard drive. Now it boots up enough to run my avira scan to see if there is an issue somewhere because there were no hardware changes made. However, the avira scan runs but it will not complete.....it reboots itself and says to use the proper device to reboot. I have no clue what is going on but I sure could use some help here. At least get the avira to actually run all the way through to see if there is an actual problem. The check disc goes through and says there is nothing wrong. but obviously something is wrong....Help Please. I do not have a repair disc or anything like that or I would have tried it already. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Everytime I boot my computer I get the message,

"system32\driversdis.sys
Error: 0xc0000221
Microsoft failed to load because a Critical system driver is missing, or corrupt"

I've tried getting back into Windows
by using all the Safe mode options and
Last Known Working Config options,
but they all churn out the same error as above.

I've tried inserting the DVD disk and selecting the 'repair windows' option.
That also doesnt work, but it gives me an error log, and an entry pops up that says,
0x8000FFFF "Catastrophic failure!"
(sounds bad, right?)

So Windows cant repair itself, fine.
But when I try to get back to a previous restore point however,
I get yet another message that says,
"Access Denied"

What is going on! I feel like I've been locked out of my own computer!

Another thing is, I can get into MSDOS using the DVD (which might be the only saving grace left).
So I've tried typing,
'bootrec.exe /fixboot'
but that doesnt solve the problem either.

And I also tried typing,
'bcedit'
which gives me the following log,

Hello. I've been plagued with BSoD's lately, all seemingly dealing with the same subject. I'll be doing nothing in particular - writing in WordPad, browsing the Internet - and all of a sudden, I crash.

I have no idea why, but 'win32k.sys' has shown up more than once on a BSoD, and it's also said "_BF838EBF base at BF800000, Datestamp 43446a58" on the same BSoD.

"A process or thread crucial to your system has been unexpectedly exited or been terminated" has also appeared. Again, I am not doing anything taxing to the system at the time, so there's no logical reason for it to be crashing.

I do not know if the following problem is unrelated to this, but it's definitely a very frustrating issue. I have a rather high-end video card which should be able to run today's modern games at a decent frame rate. When I first purchased it and installed it, my games ran fine and at a very high FPS with no lagging. For some reason, after a while, performance lagged significantly. It was almost as if I did not have a good video card installed - games would frequently run slow, lag, and every game I try playing now will crash at random times during play. This problem began appearing some time after I installed my new graphics card, like I said, and I'm not sure if it's linked to my BSoD problem.

Here is my system information:

Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition (Technicially Professional Edition)

Yesterday I accidentally downloaded and ran a virus on my Windows Vista 64x that has made my computer completely useless. When it ran, my computer immediately restart, and now windows fails to start and instead shows a blue screen that mentions a memory dump for a few seconds, then turns off. When I try to run windows in safemode, or try to use system restore, windows will show a login screen with the only username as "Other" and I cant log on. I don't really know how to deal with viruses/malware aside from the typical scan and removal process, and have no idea how to go about fixing this. I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

Hi. I've been using this program called Everything to search for and access files and folders on my computer. But suddenly I'm having a MAJOR problem with it. Every time I open it, it tells me I have only 80 "objects" on my ENTIRE C drive, and that most of those are in the OEM folder. I know I have hundreds of thousands of files on my computer and I can still access the ones I know about. It's just Everything can't find them all of a sudden. It can only search for one of the 80 objects it's telling me I have. Is anyone familiar with this program?

hi...
i always got this problem since i bought dell studio 1737.and i searched on web,and noticed that this is more common with dell laptops...
i have windows 7 ultimate x64 and when i try to burn windows 7 image on dvd using ultra iso to make a bootable disk,it says DVD R/RW requires settings to use DAO mode,i contacted dell and got to know that my DVD writer is in PIO mode and must be changed to DAO or DMA....i dun know which is right, ultra iso says,DAO mode andweb search says,DMA mode...

1..i contacted dell and they gave a little utility to install,i did...but it didnt work and my drive is still in PIO mode.
2..then i searched web and they told me that i go in device manager and uninstall driver for primary and secondary IDE drives and reboot and it shall go to DMA mode itself, but i dun see primary and secondary IDE in device manager (i have attached pix)
url: (DMA reverts to PIO | Windows Problem Solver) and (Enable DMA mode in Windows XP)
3..i got some registry solution on web too,but again same, they say to delete MasterIdDataChecksum
SlaveIdDataChecksum but i dun find in my regedit path (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x)

now tell me what i do....

Answer:severe problem,need urgent help!!!

Rather than going to the drives in the Device Manager, see if you have an item listed under IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers titled ATA Channel 0 or 1. If so, open each of their properties and select the Advanced Settings Tab. At the bottom of it there should be a checkbox to enable DMA.

I have a Tecra M1, 1.6 GHz,MS Windows Xp sp2.
Last week, I posted a message to describe the problem of my computer. It started very slowly whenever I restarted the computer. I logged on and there was on windows notice that my system has problems.

I ran several application software and a full blue screen came out with some notice, such as

KERNEL_STARK_INPAGE_ERROR

??.
STOP ??.

I have reinstalled the OS system by using the provided receovery CDs. My computer seems to be OK.

However, I installed the Norton Partition Margic (NPM) ver. 8.0 to creat 1 more driver and the NPM noticed that:
"NPM has detected an error 116 on the partition starting at sector 58605120 on disk 1 (on C driver, I guest). The starting Logical Block Addresssing (LBA) is 58605120 and the Cyclinder Head Sector (CHS) value is 1643493. The LBA and CHS value must be equal"

I do not know how bad the probblem is and how good is NPM to be used for fixing the CHS value.

Is there any suggestion?

Many thanks

I take really good care of my system, and right now it is running so slow it is nearly worthless to me.

When it starts up, the fade in to the winxp logo is slower than usual. When the desktop shows, it takes a long time before I can even run anything. Web browsers run slower than hell, and right now, as I type this message, the text trails behind my typing by 10-12 characters. If I bring up the task manager now, it shows firefox using 30% CPU, and task manager itself using 28% (it bounces, but these are averages).

I have run AVG free, spybot, and both came up clean. Hijack this yielded only things that I expected to see. Unnecessary startup items and services are disabled. I have no idea what could be causing this problem. When I load up process manager to view the processes, it appears the same. Firefox (or Opera, depending on which I am using) will be using a big chunk (30-50%) CPU, and process manager will, for some reason, be using up to 30%.

If I am not using a browser, the CPU usage will still be high. It's running arounf 100% all the time, regardless of what programs I use. And if it is running slow for what appears to be no reason (double clicking a folder on the desktop takes forever to open, for example), i can open process manager only to find that PM itself will be listed as using 50% of the CPU. That doesn't make any sense no matter how I look at it.

Ok guys ever since September Windows update has just flat out stopped working. The little icon shows up on the task bar but nothing is happening. When I go to windows update in my programs it just shows up with a blank screen, so I can't even figure what the error is. A couple of times Windows update has worked: it will check for updates and go to the downloading stage, but it will stay on 0% without me being able to stop the program. My only option there is to restart the computer. I am pretty sure the error is due to one of the updates that was obtained in early September but, as I have stated, most of the time I can't get windows update to even show up. So there's no checking the list of downloaded updates. I have tried everything I can think of over the past few months and looked on almost every forum I could find for a solution. Most of the "answers" I find seem to be either specifically for XP. Please, tech savvies everywhere, help me out. Operating System: Vista HOme Premium 32bit I am not sure if this really tells you guys much, but if you need more info, don't hesitate to ask.

My computer appears to have been taken over (in part) by something that runs windows installer repeatedly (it restarts if I press cancel) or constantly in teh background (if I open the task mgr and stop the process, other programs still cannot use windows installer.

When I start my computer (I have a dell dimension desktop E510, purchsed Jun 2006) It bypasses the usual dell screen and opens windows. When the desktop starts, the programs and shortcuts load somewhat slowly then a window (aobut 2"x4") opens saying it is starting Windows installer. After a minute or so, it switches to 'Preparing to install Roxio Media Manager (or some other program - I deleted Roxio and a different program was listed)'. The little white box inside the window opens with the green hashmarks to track progress but progress stalls and after a few minutes I click the 'Cancel' button. Then a window pops up that says a portion of the program is missing. It has an X in a red circle inside the box that loos similar to the X in the upper right corner used to close a window. If I close this window or press ok, within 10 seconds the windows installer restarts the process again.

I have Mcafee antivirus and a scan does not detect anything. SpybotSD also appears to be unsuccessful. I tried to download and install various programs but each that requires the Windows Installer says that it is busy and antoher process is running - close that process and retry. Hi there,

additional to other minor issues I do have a problem with weird mouse movements, which renders typing + doing anything on my Windows 7 Pro (x64) setup useless!

Since today, the mouse focus changes randomly to somewhere else, which is especially annyoing, when I'm typing a password, which I then have to (try to) retype! Even worse if these "windows" are AJAX or the like, so they're gone after a focus change!! This is obviously also a problem when gaming or writing important stuff to people, in general I lose a lot of time.

I did check if it could be the fault of: Google Chrome or my bluetooth mouse, yet the problem continues when using only the laptop touchpad and also happens in other applications than the browser, so it is a Windows problem! Should I try to repair?

The only thing that might be causing it, is the touchpad, which I don't touch I think/hope, yet of which the application doesn't seem to run and show up in the mouse settings anymore. I don't know where it went (and why), yet the touchpad does still work, only the application (I'll look up the issuer asap) has vanished.

Do you have any ideas of how to solve it? Thanks for your help in advance!

Kind regards.

Answer:severe audio problem hp a1219h

I would start here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1140028&lang=en

and download the latest bios and the high definition audio drivers
and probably everything else that is relevant to your exact setup
(seems a bit strange that they list 5 different DVDs for this system)

Basically I've been having an issue of viruses of some sort editing my Registry. Usually I have never come across this and do not know much about regedit so I've kinda left it until i found something on how to do it and this was a few days ago. I've just booted my pc today and its come up with error messages relating to C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.....exe
This file has changed everytime i rebooted. Plus my pc has forgotten how to open every application/file. I only managed to open Firefox because i set it to open with Firefox.exe

Nothing boots from start up and i cannot open everything the same way i did with Firefox.

If you can help that would be greatly appreciated and if info is needed i shall try my best to supply.

Thanks in advance

Matt

Answer:Severe Problem, Pc has forgotten how to open Everything!!

As it figures no one could help so I tried to diagnose the problem myself. I'm posting it here in case anyone else gets the same issue, which appears no one has since win 98.

Anyways it turns out the "rundll32.exe" file has been deleted and this application is very important (found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\). After countless searches my best solution is to either:
repair the OS with the Orginal Windows Boot Disk,
Or find somewhere to download this file.

I shall update once i found the correct solution as i havent tried any of these options yet so its at your discretion. I'm not 100% if this file can be downloaded because i would suggest that each rundll file is individual to each system. This i don't know for definate as I am only a novice.

If anyone finds anything wrong with this post or a better solution please reply and I'll update.

Matt

Something really bad happened with my computer.

I can't open programs like My Computer, Recycle Bin, Personalizize, System, and many other programs. When i click on them, nothing appears.

Another thing is, the Save As, Save, and Browse buttons don't want to open.
Again, when i click on the buttons, nothing appears.

Can somebody give me an explanation what's going on?

How do i fix this major problem?

This thing is really annoying!

Would really love some help.

Answer:Severe problem with my computer. Can't open programs.

So your computer boots up and shows the desktop? My Computer, Recycle Bin, Personalizize, System are not programs . What actual programs have ou got installed on your PC? If you can read Save as, Save etc you must have a program open Which one is it nd how did you open it? Have you got an anti virus software installed and if so is it up to date?

I have a severe problem where reading a large file is fine for a short while, then it stalls, and takes forever to finish. This means things like Media Center and Media Player are intolerable.

I've described all the details, including perfmon.exe graphs, in the file attached to this posting.

Anyone who can shed some light on this will have my immense thanks.

So I've been having this problem...

Sometimes when I open a movie in Windows Media Player (doesn't matter if its 9, 10, or 11), the entire video signal from my video card will cut out. I have to restart the computer to get it back. I've tried all different drives for my GeForce 7800GTX, and for my DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D, and every other component. I've returned everything to stock, and I've even reformatted and done a fresh install of Windows. I don't get what's happening and it really makes me mad.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated; thank you.
For those of you who have signatures disabled, this is it, so you can see my hardware config:

DFI Lan Party UT NF4 Ultra-D | AMD Opteron 148 CABYE0543FPMW @ 3 GHz (300x10) 1.52v

Answer:Media Player problem.... possibly more severe

That sounds like there may be another problem at the root of it but have you tried a different media player? Like Media Player Classic or VLC ?

Hi,
There seems to be an abundance of dllhost.exe problems and I'm the next person (possibly) infected.
It's not as severe (doesn't use 100% of CPU) but has some significant effect on memory.

I'm also uploading (probably unnecessary) MAB log.
I wanted to make sure I'm clean before backing up my system for the future.

What causes these dllhost.exe problems and why did they get so "popular" recently?

PS. A bit off topic (I'd be very happy if answered). I'm a comp-sci major and even though it's a programming heavy program, I'm interested in system/network security. Do you know of any resources for self-education about these topics? How to recognize threats, how to deal with them, how to analyze and proceed with logs? Thank you very much!

Answer:dllhost.exe problem eating up memory -- not as severe.

Ok, I have VERY limited time to get this working again due to MANY business projects being worked on (non-backed up business projects nonetheless) so I will be as straight to the point as possible.

I bought a computer with Vista installed on it. I WAS NOT GIVEN A DISC.

Today I was a little pissed that many programs were incompatible, even in compatability mode, so I decided I would attempt to have 2 operating systems running, my original Vista installation and a second OS installed on a new partition. The second OS which I had a disc for is known as "Windows XP Ultimate by Johnny", which is just a hopped up version of XP with bonus material.

First thing, I used a bootable version of GParted to shrink down the partition (my hard drive had 2 partitions, the larger being a half-used partition containing Vista and all my files. The second is labeled Recovery.)

I created about 35 GB of unpartitioned space.

I then saved the changed and booted up my computer to ensure that Vista still booted properly. It did.

I shut down my computer, and then booted it up again, putting the WinXP Ultimate install disc in and running setup. The setup is pretty much identical to XP's standard setup. In installation I was allowed to create a new partition (J: I think) out of the newly-unpartitioned space. I did so and then I ran installation on the new J:.

Setup rebooted the computer to continue with install, as XP does. i was confused at this point because I wasn't given a d... Read more

Apologies,

I self-resolved the issue while waiting for a reply to my hasty call for assistance. I downloaded a torrent for a Vista Repair Disc and burned the ISO. It repaired my issue perfectly.

So for anyone else who ever has this issue, try using this ISO file on a disc and booting it on your affected computer:

I am using a Windows 7 Laptop, and I will try to post as much as I can to explain the situation.

1. I am frequently getting BSOD's of various error types. This causes my laptop to constantly restart itself at startup and sometime I can't even get to my desktop. I'm taking advantage of this chance to post this before my laptop my shut off again.

2. I cannot run all of my programs and I do not have full mouse control. It feels like my mouse likes to go off on its own sometimes.

3. I am not able to restore to factory settings or use my recovery disks.

4. The frequency of the BSODs and random shutdowns is becoming more frequent.

5. I had to run HijackThis in safemode to get it to work and immediately after finishing my scan and saving the results I ended up with a BSOD.

6. Safe mode is also getting the BSOD frequently.

7. It it constantly turning off or terminating my programs. My Norton antivirus is now just a blank white window when opened.

Please take your time with this situation as I know you are busy with a ridiculous amount of help requests from others so I'll leave you with what my scan has told me.

Hey networking experts. I'm in a dire need of help. I need to get this figured out before I return the PC back to the owner by tomorrow. Any input would greatly be appreciated. I formatted a PC with Windows XP Pro, the PC is a 2500+ Athlon XP with a Leadtek WinFast KNRC-- something motherboard which has an onboard 10/100 LAN ethernet. Here's the most curiously messed up thing-- there isn't any Local Area Connection settings/icon. I can't connect to the internet without the Local Area Network icon. But, I do have a 1394 FireWire connection enabled (and firewalled-- if that matters). The motherboard is an nForce 2 chipset and I did install the drivers that came with it. I just can't get *anything* to come up on my networking adapters besides the 1394. What is going on? I have never gone through that problem before either. Help, serious!

Answer:Severe Local Area Connection Problem!

My computer freezes every time I use it. Everything will stop working as the whole computer becomes unresponsive. Occasionally this is accompanied by a high pitched loud ringing from the speakers.

When I restart, my computer loads up operating with a 800mhz processor, instead of the 2.0ghz it is.

Running service pack 2 windows xp. The problem has somehow gotten worse since i formatted my computer and re-installed windows.

Nothing seems to make the computer freeze. Seems quite random. My computer isn't really overworked.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Greetings MG community,

I'm currently trying to fix a friend's PC that is unable to connect to the internet. I'm having some trouble and could use some input.

A brief synopsis of the current situation: The PC is set up in conjunction with a wireless network. Comcast broadband feeding in to the router (Wireless Linksys) for signal dissemination to two other PC's in the household. The main PC currently with the connection problems is wired directly to the router. Uses on-board NIC.

The PC had, within the past 30 days, stopped being able to access the internet. My friend is unaware as to when exactly the issue started to occur and doesn't recall making any system changes, installations or uninstallations during that time frame. When a ping is done to external servers (ex. google.com, msn.com, etc.) positive TTL replies are received. Also, access to other PC's on the network is available. The separate PC's have since been removed from the network in the chance of this being a potentially damaging virus. Here is a listing of troubleshooting techniques I've tried already, none of which have been able to resolve the issue.

Troubleshooting Thus Far

Checked RJ45 connection terminations and wiring, also signal to NIC card. All correct and functioning properly.

Connected secondary PC to router with same cable from the main PC. Internet working fine.

ipconfig returns correct IP address and resolves to correct static IP issues by ISP when co... Read more

Hey guys, My x61 could be in standby for four or five days, and drain about 20%... i.e., 80% battery left... My X300 goes to ZERO and hard shuts down after 2 days max (i.e., the weekend). This is reminiscent of the original X60 bug about standby that was fixed with an early firmware (I had one of the really early -aka buggy- ones), but I'm wondering if this is just the nature of SolidStateDrives and whether they just suck in standby. So for now, I'm moving to hibernate which SUCKs... but I don't see an option... even standby on the plane for a few hours drains about 10-15%... on X61 it was basically zero. Thoughts, ideas? Platform is Windows XPSP2, with every possible patch, and everything from Lenovo System Update installed... and a few yucky battery chewers not installed (i.e., why do they ship SHOCK PROTECTION for a memory chip... ) thanks in advance... Regards P

Then it is not really a valid IP address. That is just the default when you are not talking to the DHCP server.

We have several machines which are getting a bsod. It's only on Dell machines. The systems are running Win7 x86 and others x64. The errors are divers. SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION or ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY or ...
We can't figure out what it could be but we are thinking of false drivers. How to see this? And how to resolve it?

Use a utility such as Who Crashed to look at the dump filed - it should point to the faulty driver or program.

I noticed when i tried updating vista i got a 80080005 error, and i asked around for a solution i couldnt find one. I realized a had a larger problem when i could even manually install vista sp2, and other downloads that i needed such as c++ 2008 redistributable, i decided to do a system repair (not vista re installation) using my disc would help (which i have done before) I left when it was searching for a problem and when i came back there was an error, saying it could not automatically update, so i realized there was a really big problem, if anymore info is needed please help me.

Answer:[SOLVED] severe problem with automatic updates/installations

OK you could try this - tedious but it may help:
If you manually download an update (One of the ones that failed in Windows Update) and try to run it you should see a more detailed error message.
It will probably have something to do with your not having access permission to a registry key.
If you check the registry in the area it is complaining about you will probably find permissions need to be set.
After you set the permissions you can try re-running the update.
NOTE that it may fail again but complain about a different area of the registry - you need to keep fixing the permissions and trying until the update works - sometimes 30+ times.
There may be another way around it but I never found it. Mind you after I succeded I never experienced the Update problem again.
Hope this helps.

Do you have XP or Vista on the laptop? You did not create recovery disks? XP setup disk will not be able to see the hard driveif disk mode is set to sata in bios setup.Vista setup disk will see it. Can you enter the bios setup on boot? (F1) You MIGHT be able to change the disk mode in bios andrepair your install with XP disk, BUT, no guaranteeif it will work if original install was sata mode!! It is difficult to change modes on a installed system, to my knowledge. My recommendation is to recover any important files usingUbuntu and a external drive (hard drive or flash drive)and re-install XP in ide mode, then rebuild the system.(If XP is what you were using.)To install XP in sata mode, you will need a external floppydrive and the correct Intel sata drivers on a floppy disk. NOTE: You could also use the floppy drive method on aXP repair without changing mode in bios) These are just my thoughts on what I would do, I have neverhad much luck repairing a install that is acting like yours is.

This is quite a mess you have there. Part of that is because you have no AntiVirus protections. We'll address that during this fix. I see you're running Windows2000. It is also in need up security updates. It should be at Service Pack 4 level of protection.

This will take some time.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

I'm going to make a new thread for this problem because no one was responding to my continued old one.

My situation is becoming dire now and I'm afraid to have permanently lost everything. A few months back I fell victim to a hefty virus/trojan/spyware file and my system has been getting worse ever since. When I try to run World of Warcraft my memory is so hosed that the game just stops in 30 second spurts and then resumes itself. My computer never used to do this. When I run windows media player I can't start up anything else without the music skipping for 15 seconds while the other program loads. This morning on start up I got an error message saying:

Windows could not start because <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt and unreadable (Or something of this nature). Please reinstall the file

It kept loading that screen and restarting itself until I finally shut it down. Well how am I supposed to reinstall it if I can't get to my desktop? I should probably just reinstall windows completely, but I have one problem: I'll lose photoshop forever. I can't afford to lose photoshop because I'm an artist and I no longer have the install stuff or CD key available to me. Not to mention I have various papers saved for school and it's finals week.

So what I'm getting at is this: should I find out how to reinstall that one file and try a different way of fixing my machine? Or should I just skip that file (is that possible?... Read more

I woke up this morning to find something with my internet or windows is really messed up, but only on my computer, none of the others on my network have problems. When I go to a site like msn.com it shows nothing but a bunch of weird code, and on most other sites theres "BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB" at the top of every page, and sometimes in the middle of pages there will be snippets of this weird code.

By weird code I mean this:

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB}vƖa:-M{Lix#jE1 (dV?̿?zޤd] >kֲ)\v]7M-nPRz_Qrrsr6#E."<<<̕[#AQZ|Y EY󗢍KSni ޺a'j$P Gmew }y&k):3F򨳊ff)[email protected]| K1N3T-[ywl30<hejLdsEW_nq=3g*sǥ~ $O($+~} *D 4mި_UX'pUs[R.DZ,N0|v7aW70

That's just the first couple lines of what was MSN.com. And like I said when the page isnt completely messed up "BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB" will be displayed at the top of every page (including this forum).

I encounter the problem in all browsers (IE6, Opera, and FireFox). I've scaned my computer using multiple programs and have turned up nothing, a... Read more

Answer:Severe problem with windows reading websites in all browsers

Found something interesting. I can get sites to display fine if I use a proxy site, which is the only way I was able to re-logon to this forum, but there will be a snippet of that "code" at the top of the proxy page, my guess is it seperated it from the pages I was having problems with.

I don't know whether it helps or not but changing the page encoding in my browsers didn't help.
