Windows no longer recognizes sd slot

Question: Windows no longer recognizes sd slot

Hey all,Before I installed a dvd-rw drive into my 2nd bay, My Computer recognized my card readers (SD, Memory Stick, etc.) as drive "k". Now it has assigned the dvd-rw as drive "k" and refuses to read any flash memory that fits into the slots. I have tried the standard "search for new hardware" and whatnot. My drivers are up to date. Any ideas? Thx in advance.P4 2.8GHz1.5G DDR60G HDD160G Exterior HDD (USB)Nvidia GeForce 5200 PCIXP Prop.s. For a while I was running a virtual drive with PowerIso software. I unstalled it awhile back, but I guess it's possible that it could have screwed something up that hasn't been fixed yet.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have all your IDE devices set up properly? Each IDE channel can support 2 devices using jumpers. One has to be MASTER and the other SLAVE. Hope this helps .

Hey everybody, I am having a slight problem with my computer. A few minutes ago, I just turned on my computer and everything was normal (all the start-up programs loaded) but for some reason I couldn't open Firefox or any other programs. So I closed a usual culprit, "explorer.exe." Before anybody jumps on me for closing explorer, let me explain. My computer is not very good. For some reason, explorer sometimes will lag horribly or freeze up my computer and the only way I can make it function normally again is to close explorer. However, when trying to run it from the Task Manager, Windows gave me an error, saying it could not recognize "explorer.exe." It gave me that "select program from list/use web service to find out!" box. I was very confused. So after sitting there with no way to open Explorer, I just restarted. Same thing happens again, only this time, none of the usual start-up programs even load. I get some errors like "Cannot open *.ink Use webservice to identify filetype," etc. And the icons for exe programs don't even show up. They have those little data ones.

Me, being the genius that I am, tried to open a exe program, and it said "Use webservice/use list." I was all like I clicked "use the webservice" thinking that it would just say "Cannot open Firefox.exe," but for some reason FireFox opened.

But it still doesn't run when I click on it in the start menu or anything..

HELP.

Answer:Windows no longer recognizes *.exe, *.ink, etc. HELP!

There may be no real problem with the .lnk extension since the error is probably being generated when the .exe tries to run.

Try running this .exe file association fix. That fact that the web service opened Firefox indicates that the exe's still run when called from an associated program, so the file within this zip should run regedit correctly.

Widows automatically upgraded my Windows 10. Now I can no longer see USB ports E and F on File Explorer and when I plug in my camera to download my pictures it says that the camera is not connected. I plugged in my Clickfree backup hard drive and it worked on drive E. How do I get my computer to recognize these USB drives so I can use them to download from my camera and other devises?

Answer:Windows 10 no longer recognizes my USB ports

Hello, you won't see USB ports as such in file explorer unless something is connected. The drive letter assigned is not fixed or associated with a given port, but normally allocated in sequence when something is plugged in (there is an exception).

I plugged in my Clickfree backup hard drive and it worked on drive E.

- which implies your USB hub is ok.

Does that work on all your ports? If so, then from your description it appears your problem is that your camera is not recognised. Is that correct?

Hi all,

After a vacuum-cleaner-related power failure (and an attempt at doing a system restore to an earlier restore point that failed), my Dell Precision T1600 now boots into Windows with several overlapping error messages, and the keyboard and mouse don't work.

"Don't work" means that moving the mouse has no effect, and clicking the buttons and rolling the scroll wheel have no effect. None of the keys on the keyboard do anything - no effect from Windows key, Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Del. The caps lock key doesn't even toggle the caps lock light -it stays on.

I also tried a PS/2 kbd and PS/2 mouse. No difference - they don't work as described above.

Plugging in a Dell wireless mouse receiver results in the message "Device driver software was not successfully installed" popping up from the system tray.

I can press F12 after powerup (on the PS/2 keyboard - may need a BIOS update) and go into the boot options and BIOS setup. Both sets (usb and ps/2) of mouse and kbd work fine here. But as soon as I start Windows they die.

This includes starting Windows in safe mode.

I can boot from a USB Win 7 installer disk, and the mouse and kbd work fine there. I've tried the various system repair options, but they don't help.

Startup Repair doesn't think there's anything wrong.
System Restore doesn't see any restore points.
System Image Restore - I have no image backups.
Memory Diagnostic - passes the test

From the Command Prompt, I have successfully run CHKDSK D: /R. ... Read more

Answer:Windows no longer recognizes kbd and mouse - can't fix without them!

Run SURT: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Once that completes, run sfc /scannow again, see if fixes things now.

If nothing else works, you can do a upgrade install of Windows 7 to Windows 7. This will leave your current install under windows.old.

A better choice would be to backup all your data and do a clean install.

Every time I plug in the pone (to the computer) it asks me to "trust" the computer. It should only do this once and then remember.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2010. Computer has been running slow. Ran IObit's freeware and it seemed to help then went back to slow. Decided to reboot. Powered down, waited a couple of minutes and restarted. When it came back up the Windows tool bar at the bottom of the screen had gone from blue to white and the Start button was now the old Microsoft flag instead of the Windows 7 button. I can no longer connect to the internet, connect to my internal network. When I try to run a Microsoft office program I get an error message that Office cannot verify the license and closes the program.
I tried to reinstall Windows 7 to get to the repair feature but got an error message that "Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer."
I uninstalled IObits software, rebooted and no change.
Help!!!

Answer:Windows 7 Unresponsive and Office no longer recognizes my license

Hi rdkuest IObit have been accused in the past from using shady techniques in order to promote and enhance their products, one of which was to steal Malwarebytes' definition database to include it in their "Antimalware", IObit Malware Fighter. On top of that, their main product, Advanced SystemCare, goes into the "PC Booster" category of program, which are useless programs since there's no proofs or facts that these actually boost the performance of a system, and are borderline "scamware". In fact, these programs have a tendency to cause a variety of issues under Windows, that can be solved by uninstalling the software, ironic isn't it? Most of their features can be replaced by using other programs, often, utilities that requires no installation or that are already "built-in" inside Windows. Therefore, I strongly suggest you to uninstall every IObit program you have installed on your system before we continue. You are free to reinstall them after I'm done assisting you if you wish to ignore my warning above.Below are articles that relates the Malwarebytes VS IObit episode and also why IObit failed as a company and within it's products.IOBit Steals Malwarebytes' Intellectual PropertyIObit accused of stealing from MalwarebytesIOBit's Denial of Theft UnconvincingIOBit Theft ConclusionIObit: Trusting Your Antivirus VendorMalwarebytes: IObit Stole Our Signatures DatabaseIObit accused of stealing from MalwarebytesIOBit sucks at ethics"PC Booster/Tune Up" programs are part of the wo... So this is a two in one problem. I know most people tend to have this issue but I couldn't find a fix that would work for me.

Basically, I had a monitor for a while that had built in speakers. It broke. So I bought one that didn't and just used my Urbanears headphones that I used to use for my phone. Audio worked fine forever, mic worked fine as well. I don't have a webcam but I was able to receive video calls too. Then I updated Skype and now Skype cannot recognize my sound card, it says I have no microphone installed either.

I check my system's audio devices and when the headphones are plugged into the right jack on the front of my tower, the sound works. Unplug it and put it in the left, then the sound is gone but the mic registers as being plugged in. This never used to happen. I'm not sure what happened but I really need to find a fix to it.

Can anyone help?

Hi all,

Her's more detail of the issue. Any help would be appreciated, a little out of my league and comfort zone here.

My PC is a Tiger Direct - 3Gig Pentium 4 - 1Gig Ram. It's 5 years old and has had heavy use but still runs good except for this glitch.

The OEM HD is an 80 Gig IDE, after a while it flaked out for the most part. I uninstalled and reinistalled Windows XP Pro SP-2, working great. My C Drive.

Added a second HD, a 250Gig SATA - F is the partition, the rest is the "G' Drive. Someone helped me do configure and add this drive, but partition is only 10 Gig's, anyway, this drive started getting flaky, not real heavily used, more of a back-up and to build websites and store all that on a separate drive., tried to a system restore to and earlier time, said "not enough disk space", tried to remove everything I could, still not enough space.

Went to do a reinstall, when I boot up the PC I have 3 options:

(1) Boots original drive C - no problem

(2) 2nd option used to boot the F/G drive - now I get an error message as below:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk, I have no external boot disks - my bad. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and hardware reference manuals for additional information.

(3) Install Windows which I can't remove from the menu choice. I F3 out of that and go back and... Read more

I recently reformatted a Gateway MT6730 with Windows Vista home Premium (32-bit), prior to reformat it was running on our wireless home network. Since it's been reformatted however, it says "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured", I've tried to reinstall with the Linksys disk that came with my wireless router, but have had no such luck. I also updated the Vista drivers available from http://support.gateway.com

Your only choice until Microsoft gets things figured out, is to roll back to your old OS. Depending on how old your computer is, and what OS was installed, can be a hit or miss on drivers. It is going to take a while before Microsoft has all of the bugs ironed out. Even they have suddenly realized last week, that they pushed 10 out too quick and now they are having to rush and write patches to fix all of the various problems that are popping up.

I have used a desktop with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit for years; on a windows based network. Previously the desktop would print to a HP P2035 laser jet and a Canon copier. The Canon is connected through an Ethernet connection, no problems printing. The HP is connected through a USB port. One day, with no certain changes made, the HP no longer would print. I tried to update the driver, but all attempts failed. I removed the device and tried to reinstall the software but the printer was only recognized as an "other devices" in the device manager. I connected the printer to another computer in the network and I can print to the HP through the network from my desktop.

I have two desktops (primary & secondary) on my desk. I would like to print to a printer on my desk. Connected through a USB port on the secondary computer is a HP P2015d. I have attempted to print to the P2015d through the network; however, when I select the listed printer, a pop up appears saying "Checking Windows Update. This may take a while..." And after a while I receive a message saying "No driver found" and additional information for installing a driver.

Why is the system no longer recognizing installed drivers. Why is the USB pnp not working. Why will it recognize the printer on one network computer, but not another? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This one has me kooky.

After nearly two years of running with few problems, suddenly my system does not recognize the HD.

I had some serious issues when I installed XP SP3 when it came out but was able to restore to an earlier configuration and uninstall it. I read that AMD processors had issues with the update so I did not install it - thought Microsoft would release a new version that was AMD friendly eventually.

Now I'm having errors that remind me of that event however I'm not able to boot successfully even when I try to choose the last configuration that worked option on boot up.

I am able to boot with the XP installation CD in the CD ROM. I am able to get into the Bios. Neither option recognizes any hard drive installed.

Any ideas on what I can do to get the bios to recognize the HD? I have not changed any physical settings inside the computer (jumpers, cables, etc.).

I'm running XP SP2 (unless SP3 somehow managed to install itself when I wasn't looking) on system I built. CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core, 1G memory.

My PC has 4 usb ports in the back. In one of the ports I had attached a Staples 7-port USB hub. All of the 7 ports on the hub have been in use and have worked properly for quite some time... until last week.

I tried rebooting, disconnecting and reconnecting, the best I can get is "USB Device Not Recognized." I thought maybe the hub had just died. So I bought another identical hub. I then bought a cheaper GE one (at BJ's Wholesale Club) later that day, with the intention of bringing back the Staples one if that still didn't work. The both have a power adapter as well.

Anyway, I tried the Staples one first. Still nothing. Then I went to the GE one... the same result. Finally, I had a non-powered one that just split it into 3 ports and tried plugging my mouse into the other end... again, nothing.

I tried using different ports in the back of my PC. It didn't matter. I attached my mouse directly to the back of the PC in various ports and it worked, however several other peripherals that were attached to the hub, iPod, scanner, etc, also were no longer recognized. Not sure yet if that is also true for everything that was connected, as it is a real hassle to access all the wires back there!

Back to the hubs... When I go into my Device Manager under USB Root Hub, I see the "Unknown Device" I tried going into it and clicking "Update Driver" Windows searches for a driver, then I get a message saying "Cannot Continue the HArdware ... Read more

I think I meant to say CD drives. I haven't downloaded anything new accept a Pop-Up blocker and an Anti-Spyware program--both from here. My PC doesn't recognize the existence of my CD drives anymore. When I click on the Troubleshooter, I get this message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. If so, then after plugging it into the PC that it dose not work on, check device manager for any conflicts, probably with mass storage.

I am running XP and have a Ricoh 1515MF printer. Two weeks ago the pc stopped communicating with the printer. The only thing going on at the time? I was using a laptop (no printing) that I connected to my wireless, didn?t use it the next day but printed from my pc? worked fine. I used the laptop the following day (no printing) and after that the printer wouldn?t work. I did restore to the day before I used the laptop and it worked for a XP test page. Thought it was fixed and tried to print the following day? no prints. I?m not sure if it is an issue with the wireless network? just giving the history. The network connection used to have my wireless network icon visible, but it is no longer visible yet works for other pcs in the house and I?m still able to get onto the internet.

I have tried completely uninstalling the printer, completely uninstalling the driver, reinstalling both, the cord works fine on my scanner, printer test page prints fine, IP address is in the printer, ran Rkill, Spybot and Malware in safe mode and regular mode? no issues found. Plug and play is not detecting the printer, turned off everything, unplugged everything, no change. I tried system restore to an earlier date and that didn?t work either. Can't print from other pc in the house. Checked the port it is connected to (usb001) and it appears ok.

I?m completely at a loss. I can usually find solutions to pc issues online from searching forums, but I just can?t figure this out. Any help is apprec... Read more

Several weeks ago, my computer apparently crashed. I lost tons of data and nearly all of a novel I'm writing. With the help of a tech and a download of Bit Torrent to recover my files, I was able to see that many were splattered all over the place in unreadable formats with file extentions that I am still trying to recover.

Programs aren't operating in default manner. Trying to use my 'plug & play" webcam comes to an error message of " Can't find VFW Driver". I have no way of reprogramming without a CD rom, and can't locate a Dytex driver site without the retail monkeys jumping on my back.

Any idea how to get my computer to wake up?

Thanks

Answer:Computer No longer recognizes some programs!

Well, using torrents to recover is a bad idea - might want to find a new tech.

Stop using your computer ASAP - recoverable files will only be overwritten with use. There are several file recovery apps out there that you can use - such as www.dtidata.com/recover_it_all.htm . You'll need a second machine, and slave your hard drive in that to run the recovery.

Friends, suddenly the notebook no longer recognizes the second monitor. Second monitor it's connected with VGA-HDMI adapter. It worked fine and after restarting the notebook could not use the monitor again. I tested the monitor and adpater with a lenovo notebook and worked instantly so I guess it should be something related to intel graphics. But I tried to update the driver but it's already up to date.Any suggestion will be appreciated.

While running a full Norton security scan on my HP Pavilon Entertainment PC - Windows Vista - I was also on the net and a flashing shield icon popped up on the lower toolbar . I opened it - it advised of security issues - Norton seemed to be running ok - Icon was persistent I chose to see how much the extra security would cost then realized it was a sham, and tried to shut down - Norton gave me a problem but I shut down anyway. When I rebooted, my connection to the internet was lost. A day or two later I rebooted, everything worked except my ability to connect to the internet in the office (hardline). Three offices have hardline acess to the net but not to each other.

The message displayed was "re.redirect.hp.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP)" with this computer". I am relatively new to computers and Windows Help suggested to change the proxy settings in Internet Explorer. Contacted office personal and advised of virus attack and requested the address of the proxy server and the port number. I think we all overreacted and they proceeded to take steps and isolate my port.

I then discovered that Norton had caught and quarantined 2 viruses and no further action was necessary:

Answer:V570 no longer recognizes WD Passport HDD

hi doc390,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, did you setup port locker on the V570? (this is a utility that locks all access to the USB port)

If you did, try to disable this app by uninstalling it from the system (see this guide)

Additional Info:
USB - Port Locker (How to / What is it used for)

Let me know how it goes.

The CD/DVD drive used to work, but now doesn't. I don't know of anything changed since them. No drive is recognized and I can't open the drive once Vista takes over. I can open it while it's booting.

I searched the forums and found something about deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry and followed that. My registry had three "Control Sets", ControlSet001, ControlSet003, and CurrentControlSet. I was able to delete the upper filters in sets 1 and 3, but there was no upper filter in CurrentControlSet. None had lower filters.

That slightly changed the problem. Previously the CD activity LED stayed off, but now it's always on. However, the drive still doesn't open, and nothing is recognized. I went to the device manager and I didn't see any optical drive.

And one other interesting thing - When the laptop wakes up from screensaver, the CD/DVD drive starts spinning and won't stop. Still can't open the drive, and it's still not recognized.

Any ideas on what to do next?

For recently uploaded JPG / JPEG files, Onedrive no longer recognizes them as images and therefore does not show the thumbnail; it shows a grey box with a graphic of what looks like a mountain inside.
For previously uploaded JPG files, when right clicking and selecting "details", Onedrive reports them as "JPG Image." For more recently uploaded JPG files, Onedrive reports them to be "JPG File."
I have tested this with fresh JPG files that have come straight from my camera and having done no editing to them whatsoever.
This is also not a browser issue as it occurs in Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome. It's the same story everywhere. And, I have computers running XP, Win7, and Win10 and it's the same there.

Answer:Onedrive no longer recognizes JPG's as images

A couple things to check.
Make sure the built in Ms Photo app is set as the default photo app.
Check if File Explorer is set to "show thumbnails instead of icons"
Google it. Might have some hiccup with file association.
If it is OneDrive website via the web browser, check your file view settings to show larger icons. Try a different web browser. GL

Am not sure this is the right forum for this but it does seem to be a Window's problem. When I booted my computer this a.m. it wanted to do a scan of my external hard drive (it is a fat32 - need to reformat to NTCF or whatever it is), so I let it scan. When the computer booted up afterwards, Windows could not locate my media reader (drives G and H). In Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, an Unknown Device is listed. I tried uninstalling it then rebooted, but it came back. Have never had this problem before.

My business is virtual tours, so I MUST get my card reader back! Any ideas would surely be appreciated!!

You can go to the manufacturers website and download the USB drivers for the motherboard . . probably best to first reinstall the dhipset drivers.

can we have the make and model of the PC
and the make and model of the router

depends on what you may have uninstalled
as you have another laptop - you will need to copy things between the two

you may have uninstalled the manufacturers wireless manager - but we can use windows version

lets see a few things (see how below)
1) device manager
2) ipconfig /all
3) Xirrus screen shot
And I don't even know how to go about connecting the laptop to the Ethernet cord to connect the Internet to download or reinstall anythingClick to expand...

to connect a cable to the router -
on the router you may see a number of connections on the back - and labeled 1-4 - plug one end of the cable into one of those LAN connections
the other end will only fit into one socket on the laptop - so find that and plug in

now it should connect
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the screen shot and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

Hello,

I'm hoping someone here has run into this before. I've checked older posts and don't see anything similar.

I have a personal Dell laptop running Windows 7. I have been connected to the internet via a router since I purchased it in January -- no problems. A few weeks ago I brought my laptop to a hotel (in Budapest, if that makes a difference), connected to the internet via broadband, and since I returned home the laptop can no longer locate the home router. It picks up internet transmissions from several nearby apartments, but it can't find mine. My father, who stayed at the same hotel, brought his laptop over and he's now having the exact same problem.

I've tried setting it up as a new network, re-entered the SSID and Key, and it says it can't locate it.

Clearly the router itself is working as I'm using it right now to connect with my desktop (via a WLAN USB port).

It seems like this should be an easy fix, but I can't figure it out. Dell's diagnostic tools have failed to locate a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi there --

I recently sent my HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop in to HP after the motherboard and hard drive died. There had been a recall from HP on this very issue, so they repaired/replaced the motherboard and reimaged the hard drive at no charge to me. However, I have a Western Digital external hard drive that most of my stuff was backed up to (I did lose some stuff on my internal hard drive when it died). But my issue now is that after getting the laptop back yesterday and starting to reinstall things and set it back up to the way I like it, the computer no longer recognizes the ext. HD. I'm using Windows Vista Home Edition.

I have three USB cords connected: 1 - my Espon printer, 2 - my wireless mouse hub and 3 - my external HD. It recognizes the printer and mouse USB cords. Curiously, after using the CD/DVD drive to insert my printer's software disc to reinstall the printer, the CD/DVD drive disappeared as well. I called HP and they had me do a system recovery which did bring the CD/DVD drive back (drive E:/) but still will not see the ext HD.

I left the HD unplugged during the system recovery and before I plugged it back in, My Computer did show a "removable disk" in the F: drive (which is the drive my ext HD used to show up as), but when I plugged the HD back in, nothing changed. No plug-and-play, no searching for new hardware, nothing. And the current disk it shows as F: asks me to "insert a disc" when I click on it. Also... Read more

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 531 which has the Dvd+rw/cd drive. I recently noticed it only recognizes cd's and not dvd. I have not done a restore or made any other hardware changes, so I have no clue what the problem could be. Does anyone have any ideals?

Answer:Dell Inspirion 531/ No longer recognizes dvd drive

Try uninstalling the device in Device Manager (right-click the device and choose uninstall) then restart Windows which will re-install the driver.

If no change, one of the drive's lasers may have failed (a cd/dvd drive has two lasers, one for dvd & one for cd). In that case the drive will have to be replaced.

My T61 for some reason has stopped recognizing my DVD super-multi drive (GSA-U10N).  I do not use the optical drive often, so I am not sure when during the past couple of months this occured.  I have tried finding it using Lenovo System Toolbox and Device Manager.  I have tried restarting.  I have tried physically removing the drive and putting it back in.  No matter what I try, my T61 says that there is no optical drive.  The little green light next to the drive slot remains on all the time. My T61 is a 7662 CTO, Core 2 Duo T7500, 4 GB ram, 100 GB HD, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M running Windows Vista Ultimate, 64-bit, SP2. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I keep my movie library on a separate hard drive attached to my Windows 10 laptop. Apple TV no longer attaches to the shared device, where it has worked fine (for years) when in Windows 7. I'm using the latest version of iTunes (12.2.2). Any ideas on getting this to work again? Thanks.

Dear All,

Forgive me if this has been addressed- if so just link me , thanks

I had a computer built for me, included in this was a Pioneer BD internal drive, which worked well with two different softwares (Burnaware & PavTube Bluray ripper).

My issue is that the computer no longer recognizes the drive, I have done some research but cannot find a definitive answer. The "microsoft fix" link I tried wont work as it cant see it and it also does not appear in my device manager. I cannot remember when I last used the drive so I cannot even hazard a guess if I were to try and go back to a restore point.
It powers up as I can open it and it "accepts" a disc, but thats it.

any help anyone can offer is appreciated

Hi all! I think I'm posting in the right place, I think this is a driver issue. I'm sorry if I'm wrong. :3OS: Windows XPCPU/RAM: 1GBModel: Acer Aspire 1650So, I switched on my laptop and discovered my USB optical mouse wasn't working at all. I tried uninstalling the driver then a message appeared saying Windows had 'Found New Hardware' and that it was installed and ready to use but then the error message reappeared a few seconds later saying that the USB device was not recognised.I don't think it's a problem with the ports as I tried using a memory stick, my digital camera and my MP3 player and they all worked fine. The computer recognised them, just not the mice. I've tried doing a system restore twice (two different dates) but it failed.Any help is much appreciated as I'm not a 'TouchPad' person. xD

My ThinkPad T43p no longer recognizes when it's installed in my ThinkPad Dock II (2877) docking station.  Thinkpad has latest possible BIOS and Lenovo power management updates.  It runs Windows XP SP3 at latest possible updates.  It normally runs in the docking station in my office, but I removed it the other day to use it in the living room.  When I re-installed it, it booted as if on battery power and remained running solely on battery power. I have always cold-docked and undocked this machine, i.e., the PC is shut down before undocking and before re-docking. On the docking station, none of the attached devices are recognized ( e.g., mouse, hard disk).  Strangely, the docking station power button does boot the PC and power it down, but none of the other docking station functions work including the eject button. On the laptop Windows XP software, there is no Eject PC in the START/shutdown program list. I've cleaned the umbilical connector strip on the base of the T43p and on the docking station with compressed air. The T43p works fine undocked using the brick power supply, fully charging the battery.  The ports on the laptop all work fine. I'd appreciate suggestions short of ditching the docking station and the laptop.

My WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive is no longer being recognized by Vista. It will not appear in either the system tray or when I click Start>Computer.

When I plug the WD hard drive into my computer nothing happens, even if I give it 5 or more minutes to try to find it. When I plug this same external hard drive into my Windows 7 laptop, it is recognized quickly, leading me to believe the hard drive itself is fine.

I unsuccessfully tried to access this drive on my desktop computer though ?Computer Management? by: Start>R-click Computer>Manage>Disk Management. There I see ?Disk 0,? which includes my C and D drives, but nothing else.

When I plug the external hard drive into the computer?s USB port, I hear my computer make the normal ?ding? that accompanies the plugging of an external device. Also, the external hard drive begins to hum.
I recently ran CCcleaner and don?t know if that was the source of my problem. I would try a System Restore, but that function has not worked on my computer for a long time.

Any advice is appreciated.

My stock Dell Inspiron 3531 laptop (circa December 2014) suddenly no longer recognizes external monitors connected via HDMI.
I have been using a couple of external monitors (one at a time, of course) for as long as I can remember.
The changes I have recently made are an upgrade of the BIOS from A01 to A03 (in an attempt to fix a battery issue). And, of course, monthly MS security updates.
I have been running Windows 8.1 for a long time (initially shipped with Window 8).
To rule out the BIOS upgrade, I back-flashed to A01 (and still could not get the external monitor to work).
To rule out monitor and cable issues, I connected them to another laptop (no issues).
My graphic card is Intel(R) HD Graphics w/ details as follows (ac. to GPU-Z tool):

Answer:[SOLVED] OOutlook 20003 no longer recognizes eml files

I have the same problem! I've lost the link that explains it but it has to do with the NEW "Google desktop". If you have recently installed it, your eml files won't open. Google has said they will fix it in the next version, however, short of using a third part software to open the eml file there doesn't seem to be a thing you can do except uninstall Google desktop.

There's something wrong with your printer installation if it's not shown in the Print dialogue of an application. I suggest you re-install the printer driver software. "Would uninstalling Picasa 3 version 3.8 to version 3.9 correct this situation?"Impossible to say, just give it to try.

20 years ago, I bought a LaserJet III printer, which has always been my primary and most reliable printer.  A year ago, I bought a new PC, which has no parallel port, so I got one of those USB to parallel converters.  It worked just fine until a few weeks ago when I installed SP1 for Vista.  Now, the connection is seen and responded to, but I get a message that one of the USB devices is not functioning correctly, and it is unrecognized.  Long story short, I've tried everything (the printer still works when connected directly to a parallel port on older computers), including reinstalling all USB drivers, trying to run scf /scannow, etc.  I even contacted the experts at Windows, who say the only remedy is to invoke the dreaded Restore disks process.  Before and if I do that - any suggestions from the wise readers of this forum?  By the way - insofar as I can tell, I have zero other issues associated with SP1 (or any other update).  My other USB devices continue to work as usual.  Now I know that I should go buy another USB to parallel adapter, just to confirm the current adapter is okay - but I haven't done so yet.  It's tough to believe that a device with no moving parts, plugged in once and never moved until this issue arose, just decided to give it up when SP1 came along.  But I'll do that also before I use the restore disks.

I'm using XP and for some reason, my Photo Editor no longer works properly. When I try to open a picture, I get an error message that PE does not recognize the file format. I can't re-install, as I no longer can find the install disc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Old women and computers do not make a good pair.

Answer:Photo Editor No Longer Recognizes File Format

What is the name of your Photo Editor program? What type of file extension are you trying to open? (ex) .JPG, .BMP, .TIF etc? If you right click the file and choose Properties, it will tell you the
file extension. If it is not one of the ones listed in the link, then do a Google search for the extension and the program that opens that particular extension.

I have a Western Digital 160GB external hard drive that connects via usb port. Recently when I connect the external hard drive to my laptop (Dell Latitude D505 with Windows XP) it no longer starts automatically. The unit does power up and come on, it just doesn't show up under "My computer" as a drive that I can access (although it does show up under Device Manager as one of the disk drives). I've run diagnostics on it and it says it is working properly and I even hooked it up to a friends computer and it works fine so it's not a problem with the hard drive itself. This problem started over the weekend after my son loaded a Creative Zen Stone mp3 player software and connected that to my laptop. After that it stopped recognizing my external hard drive. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

If you find out the exact model of your External Hard Drive on the Manufacturer's website, locate and reinstall the drivers.

I have a brand new notebook.  For the first week or so I had no problems with the external Dell monitor being recognized.  Now the HP won't recognize the display.  I have tried it with my old laptop and everything works fine.  I had an issue last week with the speakers (on the laptop) not playing music.  I'm beginning to wish I'd never bought this.  Lots of aggravation for a lot of money.    Has anyone else had a problem with the monitor suddenly not recognized?  Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Recently updated several drivers for Networking along with a bios update. Now I can't get the PC to recognize my phones flash drive. On a second laptop the phone is recognized and gives the option to set for file transfer and I set to 'always'. When attached to the M4600 it registers as 'charging' so it does see the phone but no pictures (no drive). Needless to say it used to work.
I've gone through al the drivers to no avail, any ideas?
Thanks,
Marc

Ok, so I have an external hard drive that I use for both of my computers. We store albums, videos, photos, etc. on it. However, neither computer recognizes the hard drive anymore. It is connected through a USB cable and is a LACIE. It won't even show up in My Computer. I have tried restarting both computers, unplugging the drive for thirty seconds and plugging it back in, but none of this has worked. If someone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I've done a good deal of reading through forums already and have yet to arrive at a solution. Here's what I've got so far:

I have 2 drives used for data storage in addition to my boot drive. That means I have 3 separate physical drives... all SATA. I was using Kingwin's mobile hdd rack so that the 2 data storage drives were hotswappable. After running into the problem I skipped the Kingwin setup and connected directly to the MB and still experienced the same problem.

I noticed the following errors in teh event log:

ID: 2 - Source: LDM -- INTERNAL Error - The disk group contains no valid configuration copies

ID 6 - Source: dmboot -- Failed to auto-import disk group Cory-c6bd30de4bDg0. All volumes in the disk group are not available.

ID 9 - Source: UISata -- The device, \Device\Scsi\UlSata1, did not respond within the timeout period.

I do not see the drives listed in windows explorer but I do see them listed in Device Mgr and Disk Management. Under DiskMgmt the drive is listed as Disk 1 Dynamic Offline and I tried to "Reactivate" it but it gives me an error: The operation did not complete. Check the System Event Log for more info.

I think that's what I've been able to put together so far. Here are my system specs:

MB: Asus P4C800-e
Processor: Pentium4 3.2Ghz
2 GB RAM
WinXP Pro v. 2002 SP3

My ASUS system (running Win10 64) stopped recognizing my Sony MP3 player. Device Manager - Portable devices no longer shows the Sony Walkman icon. opening the device properties the following error code is presented: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)". I have tried some of the recommendations presented on various online sites including eliminating the high/low filter in registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|Current ControlSet\Control\Class\(4D36E(^%-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318). I have an HP laptop running Win10 64 that has no trouble recognizing the Sony Walkman. The registry entries in both computers (for this line item) are identical so I have ruled out this being a problem. I have uninstalled the drivers, restarted the computer and allowed the computer to reinstall the correct drivers but that does not work. no matter how I try to reload the drivers the computer installs the wrong drivers. Using my HP laptop as a reference, I know what the right drivers should be but I cannot force the system to install them. some other issue in the registry must be causing the misdirection but I do not know where to look, any help would be appreciated. And no I do not want to go back to an earlier version of software if I can help it.

Can somebody help?

Hey tidri. 2 things come to mind if it previously worked. One is a reinstall of all the drivers for the mobo, and the other is a full AV/Malware/Rootkit scan. If everything checks out, a full format and an OS reinstall would be my third move.

My computer no longer recognizes the cd drive/burner on my dektop PC, and I think the problem is related to a removeable USB flash drive.

It's a really old Compaq Presario with an added cd burner(drive d now), and the original cd rom(drive e). My PNY usb flash drive installed some software(drivers I think) when I 1st ran it, and shows up as drive f.

Worked fine a couple of times, but then the lights went out on the cd burner(drive d), it would not open, and it didn't even show up on "My Computer" either.

Searched on internet awhile, and read something about a flash drive problem, so I removed the flash drive from the USB slot, restarted the computer, and both cd drives re-appeared, and worked fine, as long as I removed the flash drive, and turned computer off after burning cd. But I forgot, and left it on for several hours, and now even when I remove the flash drive, and restart computer the 2 cd drives don't show up on "my computer". The cd rom(drive e) light comes on, and will open, but the burner(drive d) light is off, and will not open. Neither drive registers on "My Computer". The flash drive still reads as drive f, even with no drive d, or e.(lol)

Suggestions anyone?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there.

Attempted to update the driver for the integrated SD slot in order to read my 2GB card and now it won't even read a 128MB card correctly. The directory structure appears ok but Explorer just hangs with I/O errors.

Have tried uninstalling the SDA controller driver and installing again but not look (although it says it is working correctly).

Tried installing the SD Memory Card driver v2.04 from the download section but under IDE channels, device manager states that it failed to start (code 10) although I don't remember it being installed before anyway. Isn't just the controller driver sufficient?

Hope someone can give me some clues!

TIA

Answer:SD slot no longer works on my Satellite P10-873

The SD memory controller driver should be installed at first.
After installing the SD-mem controller driver, you can install the SD memory card driver.
In my opinion the error code 10 appears because you have tried to install the memory card driver but the host control driver was not installed!

On the Toshiba page I have found only a SD Host Controller for W2k and not for WinXP.
How did you use the SD card with WinXP before updating the host controller?

Did you format the SD card with another device??
Did you try to format the 128MB card with the SD card format utility??
Check it!

If it does not help you could try to remove the SD card control from the device manager.
Then reboot the unit and try to install the original host control driver again.
Check another notebook drivers for compatible SD host control driver for WinXP

I have an Optiplex GX620, which has run wonderfully for 2 years with no problems. I upgraded to PowerColor's HD 2400 256mb PCI Express card a few months ago, again with no problems. As I was carefully dinking about in my case yesterday, (with the computer on), I apparently touched something, and the display suddenly gave-out; the touch was as delicate as is imaginable.

Thinking I had fried the card, I tried to install the old PEG which was working just fine when I made the upgrade, and it didn't work either. I should note that with either of these cards, the computer makes its start-up as usual, as I can tell from the sounds of the boot sequence. There is no other indication that anything is wrong, and that's with the card in, and the monitor plugged-in.

I have a lot of experience installing and upgrading hardware, but no real practical experience troubleshooting the motherboard or figuring-out where to look to diagnose a problem like this.

I wonder, is the PEG slot fried? Why is the computer operating without a problem with this condition? Is there a default setting in BIOS that took-over and disabled the slot? Is this fixable?

In BIOS, it doesn't give any indication that there is anything wrong with the slot either. The PCI menu shows all of the slots, and the PEG is simply labeled empty.

Also, if there is no way to fix the slot, can anyone recommend a good PCI gaming card for under $200?

Any help with this is greatly appreciated! Thank you, in advance.

I just purchased an advanced dock for my W500 as well as a second ultrabay HDD. When I put either of the Ultrabays from the W500 into the dock they stick out about 1/8th of an inch from being flush with the side of the dock, is there any remedy to this? Im particularly concerned with the HDD adapter and the Drive getting dust in it. Thanks-B

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Ultrabays on W500 longer than the advanced dock slot

The Advanced Dock has a different Bay construction to your W500. The dock has an Ultrabay Enhanced, your W500 an Ultrabay Slim S-ATA. The connections in the bays are also different which means your drives shouldn't work in the dock, sorry  The good news is that you can use the Ultrabay Slim drives / adapters from the T40 - T61 series or Ultrabay Enhanced drives from the R50 - R61 series.

I bought this computer recently and after a fresh install of Windows 7 x64, I found that Windows only displayed 6gb of ram. BIOS reports 8gb of ram and I'm not sure if I did any tweaks, but after a restart Windows displayed 8gb so I have left it alone since then. I decided to check again today and it reports 6gb again. BIOS still reports 8gb of ram though.

Also, only 4gb is usable in msinfo32? I am running 64-bit and I don't have faulty ram.

Answer:Windows 7 x64 only recognizes 6 out of 8 gb ram

I have close to that setup, same ram, same or similar MB but an i7 and 12 gig of ram (in triple channel mode).

I didn't do anything fancy in Windows itself, and the only thing I did in the BIOS was turn on AHCI.

Windows reports 12 gig of ram, 11.8 usable.

Believe it or not I turned on AHCI after install and had no troubles but I would look up oin the tutorials section here about how to safely turn it on after install if you want to try that...

Hello there, i just switched the broken HDD on an old PC with another one, formatted and installed Windows XP SP3 on it.
The motherboard on the PC - nForce 3 250GB.

When I got to 'My Computer'-->'Properties' it says 1.81 GHz 256MB of RAM, while there are 1.2GB of RAM.

I checked my hardware using CPU-Z, and what I got is what I really have inside the PC:
2 X 512MB
1 X 256 MB
and a total of 1.2GB

the specifications of the three cards is the same, all PC3200(200MHz), and the only difference between them is the CAS Latency which is 2.5 on the 256MB card and 3 on the two 512MBs.

Anyone knows what might be wrong?

Answer:Windows XP recognizes just 256MB out of the 1.2GB of RAM

Use msconfig to see if the "MAXMEM=" setting (on the BOOT.INI tab under "advanced settings") has been enabled or explicitly set to 256MB.

Also check and make sure each stick is seated properly.

Hey, I've bought a secondhand Think pad T60 (model 1952) with following specs:Intel T5500 1.6Ghz1gb kingston 667 mhz512mb samsung 667 mhzWD 120gb 5400rpm14" 1024x768... Now I've bought a 2gb dimm from Hynix and a 1gb dimm from Hynix. (straight out of a medion notebook)The problem is that windows just doesn't recognize the full 3gb's...(Whatever I do, it only sees 1.5gb. Nothing more. Even with the kingston 1gb + the 1gb Hynix...) I updated my BIOS succesfully, and even after that...Windows Taskmanager recognizes just 1.5, while dxdiag sees 3gb... (also programs like Everest Ultimate. But the Usable memory is still 1.5Gb... (Bios also sees the full 3gb's, or 2gb..)What is going wrong? Then another question;I've got a Intel T5550 from a Medion notebook. It's slightly faster than the one inside mine. Is it wise to upgrade it? A friend of mine said IBM uses special capacitors etc. so that it won't work or even blow up my T60.. Is there anything true about that? Please help, because windows 7 doesn't run so fluently with only 1.5gigs... (and I need it for school. IntelliJ for Java starts up sooooo slow, as like any other 'heavy' program)

Answer:(Solved) T60 only recognizes 1.5gb of ram in windows

Welcome to the forum!

You can't upgrade from T5500 to T5550 - it's not the same socket.

The T60 in question has Intel integrated graphics, so some of the RAM is taken by it, although it should not equal 1.5GB by any stretch of imagination.

As for running W7 smoothly: you have a slow hard drive and an outdated graphics chip. The former can be upgraded, the latter can't. Installing a newer 7200rpm conventional drive or even a SSD would markedly improve the machine's performance.

Good luck.

For an unknown reason, suddenly two or three days ago my external Western Digital Caviar is not detected by Windows any more. I have tried using other PC's that I have at home but it's always the same.
So, I tried attaching it as a primary slave and when the POST comes I can see the disk is there, with its model and capacity. But then when Windows (7) begins loading, it will remain for ages in that first stage when the four colorful parts of the Windows logo get together and start shining. Windows stays there and can't load further. I have extremely valuable information in that disk (250 GB, two partitions). Any ideas please? Is there any way I can recover the information I have there? Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone. A lot of talk on the net about this, but no real answers. I have tried a lot of things to no avail. In Windows, System Information says I have 2.00gb RAM. I currently have 4gb on my mother board. I have tried a lot of things already:

-Checked BIOS, recognizes 4096mb RAM
-Checked, MSinfo32 Says:
Total Physical Memory 4,096.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 1.48 GB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
-Tried Mem test, says no problem (Brand new ram anyways)
-Tried Putting /PAE on my boot.ini
-Tried Putting /3gb on my Boot.ini
-Tried Removing my video cards - one at a time
-Tried Reseated my ram, booting with one or the other only (still showed 2gb each time)

my Specs:
XP pro Sp3 32bit
MSI p7n SLI board (8gb max ram,1333FSB)
Core 2 Quad 2.83 Q9550
2x2gb OCZ Ram
1x Geforce 7300
1x Geforce 7200 (No SLI, obviously)

I know the 32bit OS has a RAM limitation, but from what I know it's supposed to be at least 3gb, not 2gb!

Any Ideas out there that are new to me?
TIA

Answer:Windows XP only recognizes 2GB RAM - 4gb is install

All 32-bit operating systems can only use up to 4 GB of memory. When you hit 4 GB, it sends some for use as graphics memory, or all-around "shared memory". If this memory is not in use by the graphics card, it can be used by Windows.

Quote:

Total Physical Memory 4,096.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 1.48 GB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

The bold text shows that the system is aware that 4 GB is there for use. It's being held off because 32-bit operating systems cannot use the full 4 GB.

The only safe way I know how to fix this is by installing a 64-bit operating system.

Hope I could help, and let me know if not.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this question or not. but here goes.

I am trying to install windows 7 on my families old dell xps for my little brother.
specs:
Pentium 4 3ghz HT
2gb ddr ram

ati radeon 9800 pro 256mb AGP video card.

The cmos battery was dead and so was the hard drive so I replaced both of those. I am now trying to install windows 7 on the machine, It takes literally 30 minutes to reach the install screen and when I finally click install it says "windows detects that the machine has 256mb memory, windows 7 requires 512MB, Windows install cannot continue"

Is windows detecting only the video card memory? in the bios it recognizes all 2GB of system memory. Any ideas?
