Monitor / Vid Card / No Display

Question: Monitor / Vid Card / No Display

Hello. I am putting together a computer myself. I am having an awkward problem I do not know how to fix. Essentially the motherboard I have (epox 8HDAI Pro) does not have a monitor port on it, so I plug the monitor into the graphics card. (I know it's an ATI, and its about 2 years old but at the time was a high end model. It has 256 mb of ram on it I believe.) The problem is, when I installed windows and when I boot the computer the monitor was fine, but when I try to boot to the OS to finish the installation the monitor shuts off (saying there is no signal.) So my assumption is it is trying to change to an on board port since windows I guess does not know to use the card for video input. But I dont know how to fix this since I cannot get into windows (as there is no monitor) and I have no where else to plug it into. Is there any solution to this problem? Thanks.1011

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Monitor / Vid Card / No Display

First make sure the card is firmly seated. Is this an old power supply? What is the make and wattage? What happened to the previous motherboard? Sometimes they can be killed by a bad power supply.Do you have a friend that can load you another video card to try? Was this a new motherboard? Did you check the troubleshooting tips on the manual on CD or at the manufacturer's web site?

Just bought a new system from ibuypower. Here's what I have:
Nvidia 9600 GT 1GB card (TWO)
22" Widscreen Westinghouse LCD monitor (DVI & VGA inputs)
DVI-D cable

Each card as 2 DVI outputs. I have tried to connect the monitor to each of the 4 DVI outputs from the computer, but nothing displays. I have even tried to usa a VGA/DVI adapter, and connected a VGA video cable to the VGA input for the monitor, and still nothing.

Am I doing something wrong?

I just got a new asus nvidia geforce 7600 GS 256mb. It's an AGP card, and I put it in the AGP slot on my Gigabyte 8TRX330-L motherboard. I made sure the auxilary power cable was plugged in, plugged the monitor signal cable in and turned the computer on, but nothing appears on the monitor. Anyone know what the problem could be? My power supply is an ATX 12V 2.0 400w supply, so I dont see how there could be a problem there.

Hey all,
I hope someone can help me with a hair-pulling problem I am having with my 1-month old PC. I have tried every possible solution to no avail. I have looked on countless forums as well and tried all the likely solutions but nothing has helped.

Okay, so I recently took my whole comp apart to install aftermarket NB, SB, and CPU HSF's as well as a couple of Thermaltake Spirit RS's on my 2x2GB sticks of RAM. When I put it all back together after installation and turned it on, nothing displayed on my monitor except for the Acer popup screen when it is first turned on and a "no display" box popup after that followed by the monitor going into standby. The computer powers up with everything seeming like it is getting the proper power. Fans, LEDs, etc. all are on and I get no beeps from mobo except for when I forgot to plug in the 6-pin to the video cards. RAM doesn't look faulty because I have 2 extra brand new 4GB sticks that I swapped in and nothing changed. Also, I tried swapping the video cards in opposite PCIx-16 slots but nothing happened as well. I tried using a VGA cable with DVI adapter on the end instead of the DVI cable I have that runs from the monitor to the card bvut hasn't done anything either. Tried using just one video card and switched SLI card to single. Also reset BIOS on mobo.

I have come to the following conclusions-sound logical?

a)Bad psu

b)I somehow fried both cards (seems unlikely though.)

Does your motherboard come with an on-board VGA? Try connecting the display monitor to that.

Okay, well here it is. My top quarter(approx) horizontally part of my monitor is somewhat fuzzy, like at the top of IE windows and ect, the text is hard to read, even in the adress bar, mainly in the top left hand corner, i can see small wavy lines through the screen if i look hard enough. Im wondering if this is either my monitor or my vid card. hopefully just the monitor due to having a decent priced vid card. .. any way to fix this? or should i just buck up and buy a LCD? or say a flat CRT.. i know its only the top half of the monitor mainly becasue when i drag the window down the text becomes more solid/sharp. i had to turn the contrast down to make it read able.

Make sure that nothing with a magnet is near your monitor (or even an electric motor). You could also try degaussing your monitor.

Answer:No display on monitor when instaling graphics card.

This sounds as if it is either a failed card or incompatible drivers. Remove the card and boot using the on-board. Uninstall all the drivers and the reboot.
Visit the ATi website and find the latest driver set for the card and download it.
Power off and then refit the ATi card. If it boots and you have the default 600x800 image then install the drivers. If it fails, then I reckon it is dead and you should take it back.

Tried helping my sister replace her video card on HPm9552p 64bit Vista, Home Premium Computer. The old one started making a loud noise which turned out to be the video card fan. Her monitor was displaying fine but game was running sooo slow before I took it out. I tried to put back in to see if the noise would stop, that maybe something was loose. Now the screen says no display. I took it back out and looked at it even closer and noticed a spot that looked like it was overheating. it was dark brown. We purchased a new video card and the display says the same thing. I'm afarid to ask this question, but in helping her did I mess up her computer? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

HiI was using my pc the other day and without warning the monitor stopped displaying (i.e went into what looked like standby mode).I have tried connecting another monitor only to get the same thing. I have also connected my monitor up to a laptop and it displayed fine.My graphics card is an agp, but I have 2 pci cards that should work fine (have install disks too), but my question is, how do I get the pc to recognize/use one of these cards if the drivers aren't installed?I guess that simple plug n play should detect them and windows should do the rest, but so far putting either card into a pci slot isn't bringing the monitor back online.Cheers

I have a Gateway FX Gaming computer (Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113075 ) and I try to plug in the video card given in the graphics description in link; "NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Over-Clocked w/ 512MB on board memory and DirectX 10" Which as far as I know the video card was made to fit the computer. When ever I try to plug the graphics card into my computer, I dont get any display on my monitor at all. Also, The power button-light flashes. Both fans (computer and video card) turn on and work, But after a minuite or so the computer turns off. My onboard normal graphics work normally but obviouly arent very good for gaming. If there is any way possible to fix this problem please reply I am very eager to resolve this issue.

Additional Details:
My computer hasnt worked with my graphics card before, therefor I decided to Restore my computer to factory settings and still didnt work and thats where I ended up now.

I bought an HP computer the about a week ago and installed a nvidia geforce gt610 video card. The desktop was working fine until today where I got a pink screen for a few seconds then now for the whole day my monitor shows "check video cable". I know there's nothing wrong with the monitor because I tested it out on another laptop. My power supply produces 366w maximum, 6gb ram. The problem occurred a few hours after installing the graphics drivers

Took an old Dell XPS 630i with ATI 4850 old card that crapped out on me and replaced it with ATI HD 7750. I am sure i properly seated the card but when i connect it to my monitor all i get is a black screen... When I boot up the machine i can't even see BIOS logo.

Monitor settings itself can change from auto detect, Analog, Digital. Using a DVI to VGA adapter so im on Digital Setting - which should be correct because i see the floating color box...

Card spins, pretty sure 750w PSU works fine, etc ... didn't touch anything else. Also I was reformatting windows 7 on this PC and didn't finish (It finished installing windows but i got to the screen where it told me to enter my Name for PC and i just turned it off) I doubt this has anything to do with it but thought i should mention this.

Thoughts?

There's a lot to this story so I'll try to condense it as much as I can. A few days ago I was watching Netflix and my monitor suddenly went blank. I could still hear the show, so I unplugged and replugged the cords until it finally came on. This happened about 3 more times that day. The next day I turned on my computer and the monitor didn't come on. I did the same thing and it finally came on. It would go off randomly throughout the day just like before. Now we get to today and the same thing happened l, except today I couldn't load any of the games I play. I tried to launch over watch and it told me my video card wasn't compatible. I tried to launch counter strike global offensive and it forced me to have the lowest settings possible. So I decided to update my drivers. I had been putting this off for some time just because everything seemed fine. When the driver update would ask for permission from my computer my monitor would go blank and I would have to unplug and replug like before. If I tried to open task manager the monitor would go blank. A lot of the times when the monitor would go blank, icons would be moved around on my desktop and the programs already open,  such as steam and battle net, would shrink. So anyways I was able to update my drivers and so I tried to open up over watch. Again nothing changed and my driver software says I still need to update. Answer:Help! I lost display on my PC monitor! video card or motherboard?

first off dustin, welcome to techspot.

It does sound like a video problem...

Before we can help you out..we need a bit more info.

First off, have you made anymjor changes to you PC? Or have their been any problems before this happend? (flickering screen etc etc)

Replacing a video card is not hard at all, but we need to determine if your PC used an actual video card, or the video output is built into your Motherboard.

If you could tell us you PC make, Model, and some simple hardware specs, including you motherboard, and video card (if you use one)

If you dont know how to get them (specs), dont panic, its not that hard. You should consult this post found here

Post back with your specs, and we can go from there....

Good luck

Can you recommend the right way to hook this up? Is there a cable that exists for this situation? Do I need a combination cable/adapter?
Thanks!

Hi,

Have you tried removing the graphics card and using the on board VGA to boot into windows, you could then install the required drivers.

Then shutdown the PC >> Insert new graphics card and see how that goes??

The display on my monitor has collapsed/shrunk (on the sides) considerably. There are (2) large areas of black about (2) inches wide on each side. The left side of the display is curved in.

It has been doing this on/off for the last couple of weeks. It would shrink and then a few moments later pop back to normal size. It has now stayed in the collapsed/shrunk mode for the last (2) days.

How does one differentiate if this is a monitor issue or video card issue ??

TIA!

Before I bought my His Ati Radeon 4670, my other graphics card (Geforce 8600 gt) had fried itself and had caused images to not appear correctly on my monitor. The screen had millions of vertical and horizontal lines on it and the screen also displayed broken images. After I replaced my old graphics card with my His Ati Radeon 4670, my computer ran smoothly. I had uninstalled all of my former graphics drivers and installed the corresponding drivers for my His Ati Radeon 4670. However, occassionally, the images on my monitor start to break up and horizontal lines appear. If I restart my computer the lines go away and everything runs smoothly.

Attached is a screenshot of the problem.

possible causes and background info:
-I have an Nforce 780i Sli motherboard (Though I read that nvidia motherboards DO support Ati graphics cards)
-I had updated my drivers (Though I do not remember if the problem occurred before I updated my drivers or not)
-Overheating?
-RAM for some reason?
-Something else entirely?

Here's the scoop. Went to microcenter got all these parts went home with a friend and built it.

Plugged in my monitor to my onboard gfx slot, monitor goes green for a second once the connection is made but goes to yellow when I try to power it on.

It's not the monitor. The computer boots up like it's going to the BIOS screen but I cannot get any picture. I'm pretty sure I made proper connections, I had a friend help me whose built computers before. The light on the motherboard goes on. I really don't want to trade it in because i've got the processor and everything good plugged in, but as far as I know I might have to suck it up and do it.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you

Post a parts list.

Did you buy the entire system or upgrade an existing one?

Have you connected the PCIe Power cordand all MB power cables? double check in the manual what connections are there.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum/site, and would like to pose a question. Recently I received a Samsung 943BWX 19" LCD monitor. It has 2 screen image modes (Auto and Wide). The Auto setting's display does not "fill" the screen (black borders on L & R sides). The Wide setting is like kind of "stretched" looking. My main concern is the graphics, mainly text. Lettering is not completely "black". My current display settings are 1028 x 728 @ High (24 Bit). Maybe I need some guidance in dialing in the proper display settings or would a switch from analog signal to DVI make my situation better I should mention all my machine has is the integrated video (VGA) connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, about a year ago I had a problem with my pc where I would get the error message "display driver has stopped responding and has successfully recovered" and the occasional BSOD. I solved this problem by simply flashing my bios. However a similar problem has now arrived ( note I have not changed any hardware since the last error) where:

- There is a constant buzzing from my monitor ( NOT a problem with the monitor as it works fine in safe mode with no buzzing, which is why I suspect a gpu problem)

- I get random "display driver has stopped responding and has successfully recovered" messages, but no BSODs. OR the display just goes black and I have to hard reset my pc.

I believe all my specs are in my sigs. Please help.

Thanks

Answer:Graphics card error - Monitor buzzing and display driver failure

Sounds like a case of GPU failure to me. The buzzing spontaneously appearing out of nowhere is never a good sign.

Sounds like your 5850 is toast - I'd try and run a demanding 3D application such as 3D Mark to put the GPU through its paces - if it encounters even more drastic errors, etc - then the card is bin fodder.

A GPU upgrade will rectify your issue - or if you don't really use any 3D applications that require GPU power (Such as games, CAD, etc.) then just remove your faulty card and use the onboard graphics of your motherboard.

Hope that was some help.

I recently purchased a Chaintech Geforce FX5500 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X video card from newegg.com. Additional stats:

Core clock: 270MHz
D-SUB: 1
DirectX: DirectX 9
DVI: 1
Max Resolution: [email protected]
Memory Clock: 400MHz
OpenGL: OpenGL 1.4
TV Tuner: No
TV-Out: S-Video Out

I've been using an old Geforce 2 32MB card (don't have the specifics at the moment) and it was working fine, albeit sub-par for new games (namely Guild Wars). I'm using an ASUS A7V133 Socket A motherboard, 200/266MHz FSB AGP Pro/4X (if you need any other info or specs let me know and I'll provide what I can).

Long story short: I correctly and safely removed the old card, input the new card, and nothing happens. My monitor says "no input/check cables". Obviously, something is going on with this card. I'm not sure if the problem is with the card itself, or its compatibility with my motherboard. I'm not a genius when it comes to pc hardware (that's why I'm here) and basically I have two questions:

1. If this video card can work with my motherboard, what do I need to do to get it to work?

2. If this video card cannot work with my motherboard, what's the best video card I could buy that would be compatible with what I've got? Also, considering the motherboard I DO have, if I indeed I need to replace this card again, what should I look for so I don't order the wrong thing?

You are connecting via VGA I assume, because as I recall the X100e did not have a HDMI port. Are you enabling extended display mode? In mirrored mode I suspect it will only allow to match the built in LCD resolution, perhaps that's what you're seeing.

During a  upgrading of my Windows Vista 64 OS update installation the process was interrupted by a power off / termination event. When I re-booted the display screen went all crazy.. The screened is filled with thin lines running horizontally across the screen in the upper thrid o the display picture. The bottom half-inch of the screen is whitened out. The center band stretching the width of the screen is displaying the normal desktop. However the picture vibrates and shifts constantly. Is this a driver issue? A BIOS issue? A Vista issue? A LCD screen panel issue? What do I do to fix it? Its like everything is in motion and off-center at the same time. Please advise me soonest. I will try to capture some screen shots and post them later. Thanks, BEK477

My Dell Insipron 6400 laptop will not support multiple monitors. I think I may not have a key driver installed. Help!!

I have attached two separate images, screen shot of my device manager and display properties and a screen shot of the same image on my mothers PC. (which is also a Dell Inspiron 6400)

On my PC, In my device manager I can not view the display adapters (there must be something installed and I do not have visiblilty?? correct??)

Also, on my display properties I do not even have the option for Multiple monitor support. (these are the same PC's)

I inserted my Drivers and Utilities CD from Dell, but I did not see any driver on there that was applicable to a display adapter.

Am I on the right track???

Having a very strange (and annoying) issue with the display. I can only see the display on my Twist after connecting it to an external monitor first. If I do not, all I see is a black screen. No cursor, no anything. If I connect it to an external display via the display port to VGA adapter, it works fine. If connect it to an external display and then disconnect my external display, the display will remain on the Twist. However, if I reboot, I lose the screen again until I connect it to an external monitor. I made sure that "PC Screen Only" is chosen in the Fn+F7 option. This is obviously a serious problem. This is for company use and our users will not have a VGA monitor handy with them where ever they go. I checked the hardware manager and all the drivers are installed with no warnings.

Answer:Lenovo Twist display issues - No display unless I connect to an external monitor

Figured out a work around and narrowed down the problem. If I hit the Second Screen key (F7) after booting, it will go PC Only as the first choice and bring up the display on the laptop after a few seconds. The puzzling thing is why it seems to choose the external monitor as the default monitor on boot, even if it is not conected. I've tried running System Updater to make sure that I have all the latest drivers. All the display settings appear to be correct.

I seem to be having multiple problems all at the same time (all of which may or may not be related) but let me start from the beginning.

This all started when I tried to connect my Inspiron 1720 laptop to our television. For some reason my laptop froze, the image on both my computer and TV had white lines across it, and so I turned off my system since it was locked up.

I restarted and began having display problems - first windows were not opening in the desktop area. They would open in the system tray, but were "unreachable" by the mouse. I played with display settings and got the screen to fit...but now seem to have 2 primary problems:

PROBLEM 1:

Whenever I play games, view pictures, or Windows Media Player, I see strange "plaid boxes." However, the desktop is fine and everything else appears to work fine. I contacted NVIDIA and I have installed different driver versions, as well as the OEM (Dell's) driver's - all did not work - I still saw the distorted images when playing games, viewing pictures, and videos.

I have also completed System Restore's to points prior to when I was having the problem - unfortunately that did not work.

Here are screenshots of what I am seeing:

PROBLEM 2:

This problem may stem from the original TV incident. When I click on Displa... Read more

The first set of pictures that you put up look like classics examples of bad video RAM. In a desktop PC I would tell you to swap out the video card with a differnt one to verify that is the issue since in a few cases bad drivers can cause the issue but it's highly unlikely. Professional service by a local non big box computer shop is your best bet at this point.

I have an X220 | 2.7 i7 | 8GB Ram | 160 SSD w/ 1366/768 HD FlexView display& Intel Graphics HD running Windows 7 64 Bit

Intel Driver - 8.15.10.2538 (build 9/26/11)

Day one of my X220 (upgrade from the X201s). I have a Samsung 244T Monitor that outputs 1920x1200. When connecting the VGA port to the 244T and selecting "extend desktop" the image displayed on the 244T appears to be overscanning and is shifted to the left.  When made a main monitor, you cannot see the Windows key or the 1st icon on the task bar nor the time/date on the right!

I've done a bunch of troublshooting on it already such as:
- swapping VGA cables
- swapping power cords on the monitor
- uninstalling the "Generic PNP" monitor driver that by default loads when i plug the VGA cable in
- Installed the special driver for the 244t (from 2005)
- tested my X220 on other monitors (both 4:3 & 16:9, all Samsung syncmasters of different sizes) - it works fine on these
- tested & confirmed on another 244T the overscan issue in extended monitors still exists
- tested & confirmed my old X200s is able to properly display 1920x1200 in extended display mode
- tested DUPLICATING monitors (in the Lenovo native resolution of 1366x768) and do NOT experience the overscan
- adjusted horizontal & vertical within the OSD of the 244T (the thresholds are minor)
- used auto adjust on the 244T
- played around with the scaling in the advanced properties of Intel Graphics Control ... Read more

Hi.

I recently got a monitor from one of my friends saying that it was broken. Its a Dell 19in LCD. I have my main monitor a 22in Samsung wide screen So i just plugged it into the second DVI slot on my graphics Card. When i went into the display config i set up dual monitors just to see if it was working. The dell monitor would blink up then quit on me.

When i was messing with the Display settings I made the Dell. Not my Samsung the Default Monitor. I unpluged the broken Dell and restarted. Now my computer regognizes the Samsung as the second monitor and it just shuts it off and recognizes nothing as the main.

I managed to get it into safe mode and it recognized the samsung but every time i try go back to Normal Start the screen is blank.

How can i get it to recognize the Samsung as my main?

Answer:Computer is stuck in dual monitor mode and will not display my Samsung monitor

Tonight I was playing a good old game. I minimized to my desktop while the game was running and pulled open Windows calculator, did some calculator stuff, but then the computer goes into a blue error screen and then restarts. A few moments later, the display on my monitor suddenly turns off as if it were put to sleep. And even if I turn it off cold and restart the computer, nothing appears on the display at all, not even a BIOS logo screen. So weird.

System specs:
AMD E-350 Processor x2 (1.6Ghz)
4GB RAM (upgraded from OEM default 2GB)
500GB Hard Drive
GRAPHICS: AMD Radeon HD 6310
Acer (eMachines)-EL1360G UW12P
bundled with eMachines brand monitor/speakers

Answer:Monitor display suddenly turns off, can't get the display back

You can try:

- Remove the power cord of monitor and PC for a minute. Not just shut down.
- Clear CMOS if you don't mind reconfiguring the BIOS

I have a Benq FP7IE+ monitor that has suddenly stopped working. Here's the breakdown:

-when you turn the monitor on when hooked to a computer it will sometimes show the display for a brief moment (ie. showed HP booting screen at startup) and than stops displaying, but the blue light stays on the unit as if it is receiving a display. Other times it will display nothing at all, but the blue light stays on.

-with the blue light on if you attempt to press any of the menu buttons on the monitor itself again nothing is displayed.

-I don't believe that it's a refresh rate or driver issue even though I reinstalled the driver and hooked the monitor to PC running in safe mode and still no display (even though the blue light stays on).

-not the VGA cable, tried another, same result.

-hooked monitor to PC with the identical monitor working on it, same result, no display.

-if you unplug the power cord from the monitor and then plug back in and power back on it will always show the "Benq - Energy Star Qualified Monitor" screen as bright as ever, but then nothing is display even though blue light stays on.

-tried monitor on 3 different computers, no display on any of them.

Any idea what might be causing this? I apologize for being so long winded, but I wanted to include as many details as possible.

After running my B570 (1068) with an extended display, the unit went into hibernation. On wake-up the laptop screen is indecipherable garbage. The second display will run to show BIOS startup but then reverts to the built-in screen - which is illegible. Toggling the F3 key does not get a good screen. I read another post suggesting this is a hardware failure. What parts have failed?

Hi Everyone,

I bought a new monitor last week and since setting it up I seem to be having some connection issues. In the past, I had one HDMI-out from the GPU to the AV Reciever by my TV (where I do most of my gaming) and a DVI out heading from my GPU to the PC monitor. It worked fine.

But, my old monitor stopped working last week so I purchased a new one. It doesn't have a DVI input so I purchased a Display-Port to HDMI cable which also works fine with the new monitor. The cable to the AV receiver hasn't been moved and is also working fine.

The problem though is that when I set-up my TV as the main display and the PC monitor falls asleep Windows seems to think it's connecting and reconnecting over and over again. I hear the hardware connection/disconnections sounds infinitely and the TV screen blinks a black screen every time.

I have tried a few solutions, mainly involving power-management settings. None of these worked except for disabling "USB Selective Suspend Setting", but then I was having connection trouble with my wireless devices like my mouse and steam controller.

My graphics card is a Gigabyte R9 290, and I am running Windows 10. Thanks in advance for helping me troubleshoot guys. Happy to participate and answer any questions to get this resolved.

Hi, I have two major issues. I'm connected to an external monitor using a display port to hdmi converter, and an hdmi to dvi cable. When I am on "Energy Saving" (switchable graphics) mode, the external nomitor blinks every 5-10 seconds, but it is perfectly fine when I am under "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode, so I'm not sure that it's the cables/adapters/monitor that I am using. The second is I cannot change my brightness using fn+home/end when I go through this process: In "Maximum Performance" (power plan) mode (while plugged into ac)unplug acGo into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan) modeplug in acplug in external display to displayportGo into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) modeuntil I change back into "Maximum Performance"(power plan) mode then back into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan)mode then back into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode. This is a bit annoying, but at least I found the steps to temporarially work around the problem ... edit: Okay it happend to me again, but i can't fix it (haven't tried a reset though, but i don't want to bc I just started the computer and that's ridiculus). Also, I can change the brightness fine when the computer is in Energy Saving" (switchable graphics), but I get the blinking problem, which is why I mentioned it earlier.

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.

I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.

I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.

Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Could you please be clearer? Is it possible to see something on the external monitor?
Do you see anything? What happens if you use the display device switch function FN+F5?

I don?t know how you have managed to set the external display as a primary display because on my notebook this option is grayed out.
However, you should see the notebook display if you will boot the notebook in the ?safe mode?. Please check it!

I have a dual monitor setup, where the laptop is hooked to a 2nd monitor (TV) thru an HDMI . I primarily use the 2nd monitor. Can I blank screen the 1st (laptop screen) monitor, yet continue to use the 2nd monitor with the lid open for access to the keyboard?(I noticed with changed settings in Win7 control panel, I can close the lid without cutting off [sleep, hibernate or shut-off] the computer and had to reduce the 2nd monitor display to fit the visible screen. But to use the keyboard one has to open the laptop lid, which kicks in the 1st screen)Thank you

Hi - I have recently acquired a new work computer with 1 widescreen Dell monitor (Dell E228WFPc 1680 x 1050, Monitor A) and my older 4:3 monitor (E178FPc 1024 x 768, Monitor B). The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. I cannot get them both working at the same time on an extended display.

One is plugged into (excuse my slightly less-than-technical language here!) the 'main' monitor port and one has a VGA-DVI adapter.

When either monitor A or B is plugged into the main port without the other plugged in, they work fine.

When monitor A, the widescreen, is plugged into the main port and B is plugged in via the adapter, A works perfectly and the PC detects monitor B (if I set it to extend displays, programs open in that screen but I cannot see anything - the screen is completely black).

When B is plugged into the main port and A is on the adapter, B boots up normally until the point where I would usually see my Windows log in, when it goes black and I can only see and move the cursor.

I thought it would be a case of adjusting the screen res down so that they weren't so drastically different - in fact I'm still sure that would help but I can't get the smaller monitor B to let me do so and it doesn't seem to make a difference when widescreen monitor A is plugged into the main port with B in the other?

Answer:Extended display monitor problems with one widescreen and one 4:3 monitor?

That is usually normal. Try dragging a window over to the other monitor and see if it works.

I ordered and today received a new Gateway DX4831 07 Window 7 Desktop Computer and a new FHX2300 23 inch Gateway Monitor. I connected the monitor and computer in accordance (I used the HDMI cable connection between the computer and the monitor) with the included documentation double checked the connections and then turned on the monitor first and then powered up the computer. The monitor displays Gateway for a second or two and then after about 10 seconds it quickly displays no signal before going completely black. Upon turning on the computer, it beeps once and then after about a minute I hear a whirring sound as if the hard drive is turning. After that, the computer is very quiet (as I have read in reviews that it should be), but the monitor remains black no matter how long I leave the computer on. This is the second Gateway DX4831 07 I have ordered/received in the last two weeks. The first one did the same thing and I sent it back and reordered the same model hoping the second one would work. I really want to keep this computer rather than send it back a second time since it is full of features for the price. Gateway’s support is virtually nonexistent so this is not a reasonable option. All I can do is return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Can you tell what the problem is likely to be and how I can solve it so that I can keep this computer. I’ve read in some of the online reviews that opening up the case won’t like void the warranty but I have not dare... Read more

Hi, I have a very nice Gateway laptop, three years old, it is a P-Series MG1
with dual core Centrino 2000 mgz CPUs and 4 gigs of RAM and 17 inch screen.

It was dropped once from a short height and ever since there is a permanent black vertical band near the right hand side of the screen. Replacing the LCD
screen will cost $200.

I would like to be able to reduce the amount of the screen that the computer display uses, so that I can narrow it enough to avoid the black vertical band which blocks everything displayed beneath it. My idea is that there may be some way to adjust the display settings to a completely smaller size , to use only the screen only partially. I'd like to be able to just click and drag the desktop to a reduced size , filling to the edge of the blacked out band and no farther.
Do you think there is a way to do this? I am using Windows XP

Answer:Line on monitor, can I use just half of the monitor for display?

What you can try to do if you dont want to replace the screen now is just hook it up to an external monitor and use it that way until you are ready to replace the screen. If it wont work with another monitor then replacing the screen will take care of the problem.Trying to reduce the settings might work but i dont think its going to be practical enough to be usable to see anything decent.

Okay, if I have been able to fix the problem with the Nvidia GeForce4 what do I do to fix the problem that I had to begin with?? The problem was that my display setting is re setting themselves everytime I start a new program on my computer. This doesn't make any sense to me. It started it a few weeks ago which is why I downloaded the Nvidia Software to begin with to try and fix the problem when I found out that my drivers needed updating. I updated the drivers, but this did not fix the problem. '

So, can anyone help me with this initial problem so that I do not accidently screw up my computer again.

Thank you for all your help with the Nvidia problem. Although I haven't switched back to normal mode yet to see if my monitor is working correctly yet.

If not, I'll be baack to post again. Thank you

I didn't know if I should have put this in the general discussion page or the video card page but here it is.

My laptop has been acting up today. I would open the lid and it would have strange colors. For example blues would be a strange red color. But it would automatically fix itself and go back to normal colors.

I was suspicious but didn't think much of it. Later today I walked past it and the monitor was black nothing on it. So i pushed the power button and shut it down.

Than the fun began It would show me the splash screen Dell when you first boot it up like for some it would say ASUS or such depending on the mobo they had installed. It to had messed up colors only it did not correct this time than the screen went black. I waited a few minutes hoping it would wake up and give me a screen.....witch it never did.

I rebooted several more time trying to get into the bios or anything with a screen witch also failed. The DELL splash screen never failed to come up though.

After close observation I noticed there was something on the screen it was just really dark and barely readable. It said something to the effect of "Windows has failed to start" and gave me the option of booting normal or startup repair.

I eventually shut the lid and got a secondary monitor and tried to use it. Apparently shutting the lid disables the primary monitor and lets you use the monitor you plug in. And now I have a screen again. It worked.

Answer:Laptop monitor dilema. Is it the monitor or the intigrated video card.

Hi computergeekguy,

Since you are getting 'video' on an 'external display', it appears to be an LCD related issue with the laptop. You may also try to run the LCD BIST (Built in self test) to check the 'LCD display performance' when separated from the 'graphics'. You may find the following steps useful:
- Power off the laptop
- Press and hold down letter <D> on the keyboard
- Power the laptop back on (continue to hold the letter <D>)
- Laptop enters in the 'LCD diagnostic environment' (check the performance)

If your laptop does not enter the diagnostic mode, you may also try to release the 'flea power':
- Power off the laptop
- Unplug the AC Adapter and Battery
- Press and hold down the 'power button' for 10 - 15 seconds
- Plug the 'Adapter cable' back in and launch the 'LCD BIST' again

Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

Hi there!

What I want to do: "...extend my desktop on a second monitor, but, my second monitor is compounded by 2 HDMI TVs and a VGA LCD stage monitor both used as Duplicate setup in Windows 7".

How I have done this (and it works!):

-I have 4 diplay devices (2 HDMI TVs that are connected using a splitter and two monitors both on VGA);
-I also have two "video cards" (GPU): one Amd radeon hd 6570 (with VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports), and Intel HD onboard (aprox. 1GB with VGA output port).
-I have connected the TVs with a HDMI 1x2 splitter on amd radeon's HDMI port, and one of my VGA monitors (this one acts as a STAGE MONITOR for the singer / artist lyrics).
-The integrated Intel HD card has my "Control" monitor attached that I use as my primary monitor (the one that shows me the Desktop and the lyrics control application).

Software aspect of the problem: In Windows 7, I use my Intel HD video card as my primary display, then I can extend on a second monitor the desktop! (The second monitor is my VGA Stage monitor). The Third display that appears in the setup is the HDMI splitter, this one is a Duplicate of my stage monitor. I use: 1680x1050 resolution for my primary display, and 1024x768 for the second monitor... (I know, this resolution is too small for my HDMI TV's... Windows recommends me a 1900 x ... fullHD resolution, but my STAGE MONITOR does not support that much, so I need to use a small resolution).

Hi, I am running a dekstop PC with 28" Asus connected via Displayport at 3840x2160p as main screen, a 28" Samsung on the right side at 1080p (connected via Minidisplayport Adapter -> HDMI Adapter -> HDMI cable to screen) and a Samsung SMART TV which hangs above the two monitors on the wall.
The TV is connected with HDMI from Graphic Card going into an AV Receiver. The AV Receiver has an HDMI out which goes to the TV. I need this setup for the playback of DTS HD Master and Dolby TrueHD encoded video material.
My graphic gard is currently ATI Raedon HD 7970.
Somehow - in the Windows display settings it shows that I have connected a 4th right to the Samsung 28". The icon of the monitor doesn't show in the normal gray and is instead more black. When I click on the 4th monitor the option "Disconnect this display" is selected and unlike the other monitors I can't place him somewhere else.
When I open the ATI software it says nothing about a 4th screen. So what is going on here?

I am at a complete loss! I recently moved and when I got my computer unpacked it wasn't working properly, the monitor would come on for a couple of seconds and then goes to black, if you power it of then back on it does the same thing. you can position it just right and still see that XP is running in the background and can move the mouse cursor around. So my first thought was that it's the monitor, so I hooked my boyfriend's brand new monitor up to it (both are lcds), exact same thing. So naturally I assume it must be the video card, so I replace my 2 year old video card w/ his new one and tried both monitors...same thing happens. I am now worried that it may be some sort of virus. I don't know if this has anything to do w/ it but I added my b/f's harddrive to mine to act as a backup storage device, I took his hard drive out and put it back in his system and plugged in his monitor and it has the same response, but his system worked an hour ago...so that's what lead me to my virus theory but I can't find anything online - PLEASE HELP!

Hiya,

trying to resolve an issue with my homebuilt computer crashing while playing games. I had an HIS Radeon 5770 installed. I removed it and put in a Radeon 6670. When I powered the computer up, I got "no signal" on my display. I removed the new card and put in the old card again. "no signal"

I tried both in another PCIe slot. "no signal"

For the record, I have a Rampage III Formula mobo. There's no onboard video, so I can't try the computer without a video card.

Help?

Answer:Installed new Graphics card, now neither new nor old card sends signal to display

Have you tried clearing the mobo's CMOS (including battery removal) ?
Did you test the HD 5770 in another machine to see if it was indeed failing ?

Try un-plugging PC and monior, and then re-plugging.
Then load defaults in BIOS.
Check if monitor is still being detected as the old one.

I'm considering getting a TFT (DVI-D)& analogue monitor to suppliment a new pc (on order). Do I need to get a monitor that supports s-video & composite - what does s-video & composite do?PC is coming with a Radeon 9700 pro 128 and the motherboard ( asus p4s8x-x i think) has an on board TV tuner card (probably fairly basic tv card). The 9700 pro appears to have s-video & composite input.Does the monitor need S-video & composite to watch TV ?.... confused !!!

Answer:Compatability- Graphics card/TFT monitor/TV card

S Video and compsite are for the VIVO functions on your card IE Video in/Video out. This allows you input video onto your computer from various sources VCR,Analogue camcorder etc etc for the purposes of video editing, the video out comes into play if you want output your video editing or if you want to use your PC's DVDRom to watch DVDs on your television. Some backstory: just one month ago, I started to think of what will be the other use of our TV and it's HDMI cable. When I cleaned out my PC, I noticed that my card has an HDMI port so something came into my mind; and after 2 weeks, I decided to use my TV for a larger monitor and it works fine. In the coming weekend, I'll work with 2 displays. I'll use the 32" (capable of 1080p) as the main monitor and my stock 20" as a side monitor. So I can still do things while doing other things? I may not be able to connect with my internet since the positioning of the modem and the TV is away from each other so I can't immediately ask for support nor receive it. Also, is it possible to have different backgrounds in each monitor? And another question: if there will be two displays (with different contents being shown from one another), will it mean that the GPU load will double? What programs will I use? Is there already a built in program?

Specs of GPU and the displays:
Palit NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 2048 MB (VGA, DVI and HDMI)
Stock 20" HP monitor
LG 32LF20FR 32" 1080p TV (from what I can remember, it's from 2009)

Answer:Setting up a multi-monitor display w/ a 20" HP monitor and a 32" LG TV

Hi there
the easiest way is to use WINDOWS + P and simply use the EXTEND option - then you can move things at will between the two monitors. Remember though the resolution will be that of the device having the SMALLEST resolution (not necessarily the smallest screen !!).

For different Backgrounds you could use the desktop program in the sysinternals suite - this gives up to 4 "Virtual desktops" that you can split out over the two monitors.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/s.../bb842062.aspx

Extract the DESKTOPS.EXE file - works on W8.1 too

Couple of Caveats with DESKTOPS.EXE though -- desktop version of IE only works from DESKTOP 1 - if you start IE again from desktop 2,3,4 then the windows are stacked up in desktop 1.

Charms etc only operate from primary desktop (desktop 1)

Toolbars, desktop icons etc all work correctly on each desktop with the exceptions outlined

Cheers

Hello:

I am not able to see my desktop when I boot up my system. At one point I powered on the pc and I was able to see my desktop. I was able to browse around the desktop but the system just froze. I couldn't even do a CTR ALT DEL so I powered the system down.

I opened up the pc and noticed that the video card was soldered to the motherboard (it's and older pc). I tried adding an AGP video card in the AGP slot. Still nothing, I even went as far as plugging to pc to another monitor. All I saw was a message about power-save. What can I do try resolve this issue. Thank you.

Ok, so i was helping my dad set up his computer in his new office and when I hooked up the monitor and turned the computer on, it did not display anything. He said the monitor had worked fine before but for some reason now it didnt. The monitor received power because the little blue light was blinking, but it would not display anything. We restarted the comp a few times and still nothing so i decided to take it home with me to see if it would work on my computer. It didnt... But i do know that it something wrong purely with the monitor since i plugged it in and my computer picked it up and set it as a second monitor, but it still didnt display anything, even after i restarted my computer a few time. I am not sure what else to do and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking on these forums to see if i could find my problem since there are serveral topics with basically the same name. I've built my computer a while back and up until recently I didn't have any problems. When I tried to boot up my computer before today the monitor wouldn't show anything, the LED would stay the same color as if in standby mode. If I left my computer on for a couple minutes then restart it would boot up fine and show everything. Now today it won't show a single thing. I've tried changing the RAM around, and tried a different monitor. My motherboard doesn't have onboard video so it won't be that problem. One last thing, I read about beep codes being a clue, it does beep when booting up, but I think it is the regular everything is fine beep. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas. Thanks for any help you give in advance.

Giving an update, I found my old video card I didn't know i had and the monitor works, now i know what is wrong.

Hello everyone!

I'm having a crucial problem because I made the mistake of not backing up my coursework(due very soon) on an additional hard drive.

Basically my PC is turning on but there is no display. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and me being horribly optimistic and ignorant decided that it was fine because if I kept turning it off and on it would eventually emit a 'beep' and start up. However, today I tried for an hour to no avail.

I've googled everything and people suggested to check the monitor, which I did and my monitor worked fine when I connected it to a laptop. I also took it apart and tried finding the CMOS Battery to reset it or something but I couldn't find any CMOS battery on the motherboard. I think mine is in the real time clock or whatever that means.

The fans run when I turn it on and everything seems to be working, but it doesn't emit the 'beep' any more and there is no display on the screen. Sometimes it turns on and stops, then it automatically goes back on again. Really strange.

Could someone please let me know what might be the problem and the quickest, easiest way to solve it?

Cheers,
Cynicgirl

I am running win ME.

Answer:monitor display help

Use the buttons on the front of your monitor to access the menu then cycle through the options until you see the one that will expand your display to the top and bottom of your screen. You can also use these buttons to move the display to the right/left or up/down and other adjustments as well.

I have built myself a computer. I will not list what i used, because they are all brand new parts, all working, and all good spec. Anyway, everything was working fine last night, however when I come to turn the computer on today, i get no display at all to the monitor. I have tested the monitor on another computer and it works fine. So I really dont know what to do. I have reseated the RAM, Graphics Card, and Processor. Still no joy though.

What should I do, any advice would be a great help.

Thanks.

Answer:No Display on Monitor

Does the motherboard have a built-in speaker and/or POST status LED indicators? If so, what kind of beep pattern do you hear or what do the LEDs indicate?

Do any of the status LEDs on the keyboard light up when you turn on the computer?

With the monitor connected and powered up, do you get anything on the screen when the computer is first turned on. If the monitor has a front panel LED indicator, does it change color at all when the PC is first turned on?

I came home today and restarted my computer. When I did, it said no signal, check cable. I saw that one of the pins on the cable was pushed in so I tried another cable, and now when I turn on my computer the monitor just stays on stand-by mode not picking anything up. It was working fine.

I went to Best Buy, bought another Video Card and popped it in but still no luck. It's the exact same. I have no idea what to do. I've tried different PCI-Xpress slots, I've checked every cable I can think of, but still no luck. I'm at a complete loss.

The fans turn on, the hard drive light turns on, the graphics card, Heat Sink, green light for the mobo. Any ideas?

And I'll let you know, F8, BIOS, all that is out of the option, as my monitor does not pick up anything.

I have an older IBM 10in screen thinkpad running Win2000. Turned it on for the first time in a while the other day and the windows sign on screen is off the right and it is like I am on dual monitor. Can slide pointer to right and get to one side with startup menu then slide pointer back to left for icons. When put a screen saver on in tile mode, it duplicates it side by side but you have to scroll left to see both. Have gone into display and tried to change things but nothing works. When I go to settings, it shows only one monitor but says display [Multiple monitors} on silicon Motion LynxEM+.
Any ideas how to get my desktop back to normal?

Thanks!

I have a friend's Gateway Model#GT4015E computer. It has onboard video but it now does not have any display at all! I have tried it on one of my regular CRT's and it reads "out of scan range." On my LCD it shows "no signal". The computer appears to be passing POST and there appears to be cpu and hard drive activity based on the HD LED activity light and the computer sounds as if it is booting up fine...there is just no display...ever!! I have tried installing a known good pci-e video card but the monitor acts as if there is no display at all....like there is no signal. I think this may be because the motherboard isn't configured to send video to the secondary video card but I do not know how to disable the onboard video as I do not see any jumpers that indicate this function. I have tried pressing f8 to see if it would bring up the safe mode prompt but again...nothing! I know a decent bit about computers but this one has me stumped...please help anyone!!! By the way the MB is a C51GU01.

Answer:No Monitor Display - Need Serious Help!

First prove the PC is really booting.

When you "think" it has booted, try the Caps Lock key. Every press should toggle the Caps key light between ON and OFF.

If that does not work, the problem is deeper that the CRT or video, the PC is not actually booting.

Hi again!

I have a problem with my Acer AL2021 20" LCD monitor.

Basically, upon start-up, it flashes the image of my desktop for a split second and then goes back to black.

Now I guess this could either be a problem with the circuitory on-board the monitor itself, but because it has not been used excessively, I doubt it.

My other feeling is that it is a faulty power cable not producing the voltage needed to power up the screen image (although it has no triuble showing the lCD lights at the bottom, which require hardly any voltage).

I bought it in Japan so it is therefore not supported by warranty, so I've had to do the homework myself..

For trial and error purposes I plan on buying another AC Adapter for the monitor to see if that helps, but at the moment, as it was bought in Japan, it is connected to a conerter plug.

So my question is: Will a regular monitor power cable from the UK function with a monitor from Japan?

The cable I plan on testing is: http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=119784&catcode=
Thanks again TG!

Answer:Monitor Won't Display Anything

Quick questions:
Is the adapter itself designed to work on UK mains voltage?
I assume the monitor has a menu button like my smaller Acers. If so, does the menu show properly?

Alright guys I have a problem my Display is not booting up on my main graphics card *9600gt*. I use an 720p HDTV that I have my HDMI to DVI connector connected to my 9600gt graphics. Its worked for over a year that way and last night I hardbooted my PC down because it was late and im a bit sick and didnt feel like going through the process of shutting down. So I wake up today try to boot up like normal and then I notice my TV does not pick up the HDMI autosource.

I unplug everything on the system and reboot it back up again with just the power cable / hdmi cable. No dice, then I unplug all of that and dive into the case and make sure nothing is unplugged or un rattled and I push down on the gfx card to make sure its seated, I leave the case open and plug in the power cable I see everything boots the video card fan everything. I then go upstairs to grab my parents dell wide-screen monitor and I hook it up to my onboard everything loads up and im in windows fine. I check my bios settings and its set on primary video adapter PCI-E. And in device manager there is no 9600gt and its just installing my onboard video.

Now maybe im thinking is my HDMI to DVI adapter has went awry, so im going to get a new one sometime today and see If that solves it because the TV works fine. My 360/ps3/tv all work as expected just my HDMI source is not working.

So if you guys have anymore ideas or tips Im definitely open to them all.

Thanks

Answer:Display VGA/Monitor help

I'd suggest reinstalling your graphics card drivers. Use Driver Sweeper to get rid of the old installation, then download the latest drivers for your 9600gt.

T.v specs : 32 inch, native resolution at 720 (HD ready).

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me here. I bought a Packard Bell Viseo 230WS monitor some time ago to connect to my Toshiba U400 laptop and until recently it's worked fine. Now though, the monitor displays a 'no signal' message when connected and I'm not sure why. My only hunch is that I've just noticed that the express card slot on the left hand side of my laptop is empty (even minus tray for loading the card), and I know that such a card is used to allow peripherals to be connected. However, I can never actually remember having the express card itself, only the empty tray until it fell out. Is this likely to be the issue? Do I need an express card? Or might it be something else?

Thanks a lot.

Hi there,i have recently bought a nVidia GeForce 8400 video card for my computer so i can play more games. The computer used to run on an intergrated chipset so i had to buy a video card anyway because it was getting to old. With this i also bought a new power supply of 420W.I installed both and plugged the display mointor cable into the new provided slot on the video card. When i went to look at the screen it was on standby, no life at all.I did some testing, kept everything as it is but just switched the monitor cable to the onboard. This time, before the windows logo it came up with an error message saying a new video/graphics card has been detected and the mointor cable needs to be plugged into the video slot, which is already what i had assumed.I did some research ( i had to take the video card out to do this :( ) and i changed the BIOS setting to onboard so i could install the drivers with the video card in but still running on the intergrated card. No luck, the display on monitor was black.I went into the "My Computer" properties and manually disabled the intergrated video card and tried again but no dice.I am running out of ideas and getting very frustrated, any help would be more than gratefulthanx

Answer:Monitor won't display

Hi, first off, have you fitted your new card to a PCI Express slot? assuming your mobo is pci express capable.Secondly, you did not need to manually disabled the on-board graphics, the PC will automatically recognise that a new PCI Express card is fitted, and will disable the on-board graphics. Also, in the bios you should reset the default graphics adaptor, change it to PCI-E, then save and exit.Reboot and make sure you have the latest drivers.

Teaching senior citizens how to operate a computer, need to have a bigger screen. Need to know what is available to make the pc use a BIG TV as a monitor. Limited budget

Answer:Using a TV as a monitor or display

You can buy inexpensive graphics cards with a video out. It's just a simple RCA plug like you'll find on many televisions. If it's an older TV, you can use a VCR (computer -> VCR -> Television). If you have newer equipment with s-video, you can look for a graphics card with s-video output. You won't need high quality graphics because the TV will limit the video quality.

My brothers PC will load windows anymore, it loads the DFI motherboard screen (BIOS doesn't work) and then the monitor says "no signal", and just has that no signal sign and that's it.

Anyone know what's wrong with it? It's a new PC, about half a week old.

Specs

Intel quad core cpu
DFI lanparty SLI board 775
nvidia 9800GTX
4 gb ram, OCZ I believe
120gb SATA HD

It's been running great up until now, my first guess was a videocard issue, anyone know?

Answer:no display on monitor, help

my old system did that, i believe it was a video card driver issue or some thing of the like (ii have not solved the problem my self yet but that is what i suspect, haven't really had time to mess around with it)
