Cpu usage at 100% for 30 seconds when I download

Question: Cpu usage at 100% for 30 seconds when I download

HiSince I installed my Maxtor diamondmax Ultra 16 HDD (300Gb),I keep getting slowed up when I download something from the net.Actually, whenever the "download" window opens from Firefox, it freezes up my computer using 100% of my Cpu.At first I could go onto other programs and keep using my computer while firefox was unusable, but now it's getting annoying to the point nothing works for that 30 seconds. What could be wrong?

Preferred Solution: Cpu usage at 100% for 30 seconds when I download

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Cpu usage at 100% for 30 seconds when I download

What are you using for virus/spyware protection? Unless the computer is clean all bets are off. Did this problem start immediately after this drive was installed and no other changes were made? How many drives in the machine? How are they set up?

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude laptop running win xp. I recently cleand my system using spybot S&D, Adware and Hijack.

My problem now is I noticed that my audio would cut out about every two seconds regardless of the audio source. Then noticed that the cpu usage meter mirrored this time interval going from 0% to 35% every 2 seconds.

How do I resolve this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

My CPU Usage is spiking to 90% every 5 seconds. Sorry to post yet another plea for help but I have searched for days and not quite found an answer.

Heavy hitting processes that cycle every 5 seconds are are:
system
services.exe
svchost.exe

I followed the READ & RUN ME FIRST directions and cleaned up a lot, but I am still having the issue. IE is also a little slower than usual.

I would appreciate it if an expert could look at the attached logs (2 posts) for anything that stands out.

Thank you in advance.

I just bought this laptop (a dell latitude c610) P3 1.0 GHz 256 ram and it just "skips" all the time. The mouse freezes in mid movement and so does any program I run. This is a new laptop to me and I hope I don't have to bring it to someone to get it fixed. Any ideas?

Answer:cpu usage skips from 0% to 34% every 2 seconds!

thats a preatty slow system any processes running in the background can make it twitch like that. how long have you had it. try leaving it on for about 2 hours with no activity and see if it still spikes when you come back to it

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a duplicate post, if it is PLEASE send me a link of the RESOLVED thread.

I have this issue where windows seems to hang/get stuck every 5 to 10 seconds for about 2 seconds, like right now while I am typing. I type the words and about three words types out and then hangs for 2 seconds and the rest I typed while stuck gets lost and I have to backspace and restart again.... Same happens with mouse clicks, sometimes when I click it does not register (I presume it is right in that 2 sec delay sweet spot) but the mouse cursor movement is smooth and does not get stuck.

SO I checked my Task Manager and found that RAM,CPU and Network are all low in the 10% - 20%, but my HDD Runs at like 80% -100% all the time. See Screenshots of Task Manager and Resource monitor. The disk keeps getting used full load every 5 to 10 sec.

I have tried disabling Disk Defragment service in the Task Scheduler and several other tips I found on the net but no luck.

Sorry I am not a fundi on PC's by any means, but I do have a bit of knowledge and applied all the normal things like check background scanning programs like Anti Virus and System Maintenance processes, also did a clean boot to make sure no extra services are running but problem still persists

Has anyone figured out what the problem is here?

I have 1.5 Gig of RAM on a desktop AMD system running XP Pro, SP 2, with Trend Micro PC-Cillin for anti virus. Plenty of hard drive room. Recently defragged. I'll be opening new IE windows, downloading files etc. and suddenly the CPU usage (as measured by Program Manager, which I always have running) goes to 100%, and sticks there for 15-30 seconds.

The constant theme of processes running at the top of memory usage seems to be IE, of course, but also sqlservr.exe (several copies running at the same time often) and Tmproxy.exe (the Trend Micro process) and PcScnSrv.exe. When Firefox is running it takes up a lot of memory, but even when it's not, this happens.

I've done the CClean bit, can't find any viruses or trojans, and yet this highly annoying stalling goes on right in the middle of whatever I'm doing. It seems to date back to when I installed Trend Micro PC-Cillin, but this may be inaccurate.

Here is a HijackThis log for this machine. If you have any insight into this, I'd be very grateful. I've tried a lot of things with no change, but probably didn't hit the right one. Should I dump Trend Micro? What antivirus product is better about not memory hogging, if this is the case? Thanks for your help.

On my XP home laptop, the CPU usage spikes every 10 seconds...from 0% to 80%. When this happens there is a slight click in the speaker, unless I turn audio off.

My drivers are current. Several tools (McAfee, Spybot and Malwarebytes) say the system is clean. update.microsoft.com says it's updated.

The task manager, sorted by CPU doesn't clearly show what process might be responsible for this, but it appears that it is SYSTEM.

This happens even if I disconnect the network interfaces (wireless off, ethernet cable removed).

Ideas?

Answer:System CPU usage spikes every 10 seconds

Hi linuxbird, welcome to TSF !

What's the brand and exact model of your laptop ? When did the problem start and did you install any new program recently ?

What other symptoms do you see : sluggishness, programs hang, ... ?

What happens if you start windows in safe mode (press F8 at startup) ? If the issue doesn't happen there then in normal mode run autoruns, go to the logon tab and make sure there are no unwanted programs there. Use Bleeping Computer's startup items database to know what programs do or don't need to start with windows.

Make sure you've installed all the latest security updates for XP.

Use process explorer instead of task manager, it has many more options and playing with them may help you finding the culprit.

Your user name suggest you know about linux, I'd give it a try with an ubuntu or any other distro's live CD to see if the issue also happens there. If so it's OS independent and you need to look for hardware issues.

Hello,

I am Dealt. I have an issue where my computer will lock up every 5-10 minutes for 10-15 seconds. My disk usage will randomly spike to 100% which then causes my computer to freeze. There are many different programs that will spike in activity, I believe I have a virus that attaches to many different files to slow my computer down. I have done extensive research to try to fix this issue, but I have not been able to complete it on my own. I have not installed any programs to try to fix the issue and I have not messed with the registry. However, I did run a virus scan and quarantined items. I understand that you guys are not paid for your work done on this forum, and I appreciate what you do on a daily basis. I also understand this could take weeks to either fix the problem or find out that it cannot be fixed. Thanks again for your help in this matter.

In order to use my memory at its rated specification, my CPU has to be overclocked and this also means it has to be over-volted. I don't want to change the CPU cooler if I don't have to and I'm trying to find out how much time my CPU approaches 100% to find out whether I need to consider it.

If I use a stress test (OCCT), the maximum permissible temperature is exceeded after about 150 seconds and the test aborts.

I have set up Performance Monitor to log % Processor Time every five seconds so I can find out if it ever hits 100% in practice and if so, for how long but I would also like to know what program is using the most CPU time and don't know how to include that information in the logging. Ideally I'd only record which programs are using over, say, 20% and only when CPU usage total is over, say 70%.

Answer:Logging CPU usage over long term (every five seconds for a month)

Why does your cpu have to be OC`d to run your memory at max speed ?

Never heard that before.

My memory runs at 2800 all the time, never had to OC the cpu for it to do that.

CPU`z will show you what your cpu`s running at at any given moment.

Why do all these websites use this. "Your download will start in 10 seconds, click here if it doesn't".

I think it's so annoying.

because if you are using ie6 and winxp w/ sp2 it will block the dl from starting. By having the click here you can start it manually. I know its kinda a pain but if they didn't most normal people would be like wtf why cant I dl this.

Hey,

So lately I have been having some issues with my internet, first I couldn't even connect the thing to the internet, now every time I try to download something, like a youtube clip, patch for a game or even a tiny download the speed seems to crap out and then slow to absolutely nothing after just 2 or 3 seconds.. also sometimes I can't even connect to my router with 192.168.2.1, the page is just blank, half to disconnect router and reconnect..

Some days I can't even download a website without having to constantly refresh the page..

For a youtube video if I just keep refreshing the page it downloads a part at a time till it gets the entire thing.. Is this an internet problem or something to do with my router? any ideas how to fix?

My internet speed is around 15 MB/s, before the download quits the speed is always fast..

Thanks for help.

Win2K Pro - Sp3 with last updates

Since 3 weeks I noticed that all my downloads in HTTP mode,
from any browser, stops after 15-30 seconds, without a reason.
If I use FTP mode, my download are fine.

From other PC in my LAN all works ok,so I changed cable, IP, ethernet card: nothing!

I changed TCP window registries : nothing!

I put a sniffer and I see that it seems my PC stops to answer

I don't have viruses becuase my TrendMicro is super-updated.

What's the problem in my HTTP sessions ?!?
Thanks for any idea...

How can I find out what our download usage has been. The reason I ask is at present we are with Tiscali on unlimited download, but have been taken over my TalkTalk & their package has a download limit of 40Mb.I also need to know how much download usage is WOW per hr. as this may hep me.

Answer:WOW - download usage

according to click hereThe bandwidth usage for World of Warcraft is as follows:Download: 6 Kb/s - 360 Kb/min - 21 600 Kb/h - 21,09 Mb/hourUpload: 3 Kb/s - 180 Kb/min - 10 800 Kb/h - 10,54 Mb/hourThis number could change according to what you are doing in-game, for example, if you are finishing a quest, or are in a crowded area, there will be a much higher transfer rate. Ok so I have a BigPond plan in Australia. I'm on a 25 GiB plan and I can't exactly remember what speed , I think maybe 1500kB/s - 256kB/s . Idn I do know i download at around 150kB/s MAX.

So the problem is my download is getting drained when I'm barely even download the month started barely two weeks ago and I'm already on 22 GiB data used. Where I am positive that I have only done a max of ten GiB downloading. The internet is encrypted so that rules out people using our connection.

My usage for today says 397 mB (d/l 294 mB - u/l 103 mB) data used. When all I have done is watch maybe four videos on youtube (all in low quality). Does that sound about right because it has never been like this before.

Also the other night just as midnight ticked i played an hour and a half of xbox live and i wasn't even hosting and it took 1807 mB (d/l 1385mB - u/l 423mB) data usage. I was the only one on the computer and I checked the usage as soon as I got off.
I use google chrome for everything, so do all the other computers in the house except one. I checked out the chance that it might be other people in the house using the usage but all they ever do is banking and go on facebook. I am the only one who downloads.

I'm absolutely lost :s . Any help would be appreciated . If you need extra info just let me know . I'm kinda new to this.

Answer:Download usage getting used up ?

I download DUmeter and did a recording with that. All computers were shut and out of the internet at around 11.30. When I checked my usage on the BigPond site for the day so far it said 75mB but when I checked it in the DUmeter it said 3.4mB. I'm thinking there is something wrong with my meter. I have run malware and adware scans and so on coming up with no results so I'm going to call the billing company of BigPond which I was instructed to do last night by tech support as they suggested there may be a problem with our meter. It's the first I've ever heard of BigPond slightly admitting to a problem. We'll see how long it lasts.

Please help me out if you have any info. It would be much appreciated.
Also let me know if you have a similar problem or even anything that you know about BigPond that I haven't mensioned because chances are I don't know it.

Many thanks in advance.

Please can someone tell me roughly how much download usage is involved for a one hour Skype video call.
And if you switch off the video during the call and use speech for say half the call does that make a great saving of download usage?
Last question, I've heard that if you leave Skype on in a standby situation, awaiting calls, that download usage is still being used. I have a 40GB download allowance per month. So was wondering how this will be affected by skype.

Answer:Skype download usage.

My Skype video calls are typically 800Mb to 1Gb per hour. I can only assume that audio only calls will be much less than that. The bandwidth used by Skype on standby is negligible.

I have an old acer aspire t180 pc that wifes uses on occasion. The machine works fine and the speed is good until I try to download updates. In fact I had to turn off auto updates and select never update so machine would run properly. As soon as i select windows update cpu hits 100% this is in task manager. Is this normal or do I need to reload windows vista. I am running sp2. It also takes extremely long time to download files like 10 minutes for 1mb file, which is rediculous.

Hi everyone, I have just signed up with virgin bb and i have a download limit of 40gb and i just wanna monitor my usage so i dont go over it. I dont really download a great deal if im honest, i may browse the web like 4 hours a day, I use my xbox live quite a lot and i have just signed up to sky player on my xbox so i can watch live tv which will use up some bandwidth.

So just wanna know if you think i am likely to go over my limit with wat i do as mentioned above and wat little program i could use to monitor how much i have used.

Thanks a mill

Answer:How can i monitor my download usage?

You should be able to log into your account online and check your usage and some ISP's even give you programs that will monitor the usage if your lucky.

Another thing you might want to check is Net meter which is a Firefox Plug-in that monitors your usage and displays it on your toolbar.

I was wondering, how much usage does YouTube take up?

Is it worth watching a video on YouTube or downloading that same video, which downloads more?

Also, if I watched a 5 minute YouTube video, how much would that approximately download?

Thanks alot,

According to our ISP our internet downloads have increased greatly over the past 6 weeks. We are running Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 (updated daily) which has not detected anything unusual. Regular TM virus/spyware scans are clean. If we turn of the modem then the reported downloads stop, so the ISP download reports are probably correct. The reported daily downloads are usually about 500mb and last for about 12 hours.

this is definetly not something you ask on a site which makes it money by hosting freeware, as well as shareware programs. What you are suggesting is cheating the shareware program and therefore pirating the software. We cannot help you here.

ive been getting about 15% CPU usage from DPC/ISR service (Deferred Procedure Calls / System Interrupts) when copying files from the HDD to external devices and vice versa and when I download files to computer, the downloading part of it gets worse if I install a firewall like Outpost (it went up to 40% when downloading at 12Mbps on my wifi with Outpost on - ive since uninstalled it) - so originally I though it was my wifi card but it does this with it disabled when i transfer files out to HDD (when I transfer files internally it doesnt happen) - I ran the Windows SDK Performance Monitor which showed it to be the NDIS.SYS that caused most of the problem. ive searched and asked for help on other forums but had no luck, one person told me its a bug in windows 7 and everyone gets it??

like I say it happens when downloading (the faster the more it does it and it does it more on Wifi (15%) than LAN (5%) and it happens when I copy files in/out of laptop's HDD - ive been told this 'hidden' process using even 1% is abnormal

the process is hidden in Task manager and does not show so dont use that to check, even if this background service uses 99% cpu taskman will still show as 99% idle (it runs behind idle as its not expected to use more than 1% cpu...so im told) - only in resource monitor or process explorer can you see it

see my screenshot below for example

can anyone help me with this please? Win7-64bit / Dual-Core AMD / 2Gb / Acer Aspire 5050 laptop

Hi,

This PC was built earlier this year as my workhorse. As a media server for Plex it seems like when I'm downloading and we're streaming vids to the networked tele I get BSOD. The video files are stored on the PC.

This even occurs when not downloading, just streaming.

Was wondering whether I needed to upgrade memory and even looked at my graphics card in desperation.

I've also attached the prerequisite files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! I'm using a samsung  laptop with windows 7 32 bit os and  intel icore i3 processor  with 4gb ram.

The other week, I started experiencing this slow computer and browsing. Then I started to check on the processes and services that is running through the task manager. I saw that there is 100% cpu usage even if I am only using vlc. I ran rkill and it terminated one malware process called rezip.exe. I usually ran rkill whenever I feel like scanning my computer for viruses or malware then I use jrt, mbam and adware cleaner then emsisoft anti malware; and it's the first time I've encountered that rezip.exe being terminated by rkill. Then last week, as I did the same to somehow eliminate the malware, it detected a missing service called tbs. So in an effort to resolve this on my own, after I ran rkill, I ran jrt, then adware cleaner,  and mbam. but nothing was found. Then I started to search the internet for whatever the culprit maybe. I saw that a some malwares and rootkits can bypass an outdated program and enter your system so I have decided to download updates for windows. Over 3 days, I tried to do the same thing, but nothing was found and the win update downloader won't download anything and because of the length of time of waiting I leave my laptop on while I hope to update it when I wake up the next day. I also tried to download updates for NVIDIA  since it is my graphics driver and it always pops in the taskbar but I can't seem to download... Read more

I will start out by apologizing for being so stupid.  Anyway . . . my niece called me and said her computer had all but stopped running and she needed help.  I advised her to run Norton Power Eraser.  (Here's the really stupid part) I attached to her computer and used Malwarebytes and HitmanPro to try to clean it up the rest of the way.  While I was attached, it was almost like something had jumped into my system.  My computer began running more and more slowly and Norton 360 indicated high COM Surrogate usage, it also has blocked several attacks including Trojan.Poweliks!gm (it keeps showing up in various .tmp files that have been downloaded to the c:\windows\syswow64 directory), appmgr.dll and cryptbase.dll

Norton Internet Security states that virus was c:windows/syswow64/dllhost.exe.  Currently I have Norton blocking Com Surrogate.

I ran Norton Powereraser on my machine, and it tried to delete appmgr.dll in addition to several other things.  I left appmgr.dll on the system.  I then ran Malwarebytes and HitmanPro, to no avail.  By this time, I can no longer download from the internet.  On another machine, I downloaded Norton's Bootable Recovery Tool.  I ran both tools and nothing was found.

I am using Windows 7 and Norton 360.  Both are on automatic updates.

Thanks in advance for any help.

how much ram is on your computer and how much free space on the harddrive? IMO, you should uninstall it since it is beta and will have bugs.

What would you recommend as a good freeware net usage meter for showing daily and monthly download/upload reports?
I am also wondering what I should expect for a days usage regarding download from a system only used for light surfing. The system has only been on since 6pm today (roughly 6 hrs), not always connected to the net, used to surf fairly lightly by 2 users. No updates. I am using the Networx usage meter which has been recommended by some websites (although some users have noted inaccurate readings in some versions). My usage report for the last 6 hrs is showing 240mb in total for download-does that sound about right? I am using TalkTalk which has an online checker, but it can take up to 3 days to update, so I thought I would search for a freeware equivalent. Thanks for any info

I have been having an ongoing problem with Windows Update for the past few months. Updates sometimes just refuse to download, and get stuck at 0%. I have managed to fix this a few times by opening up a command prompt, and terminating windows update (net stop wuauserv), deleting the contents of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download", re-starting and trying again..... however for the last week or so this has not helped.

I have also noticed a couple times where my computer will be sitting idle at the desktop without any applications running, and my CPU usage will be at 40-50%. Upon examining Task Manager, all of the CPU usage is in "Service Host: Local Service", and by terminating windows update, the CPU drops back down to normal idle speed.

I am running the free upgraded Windows 10, which I installed last summer over my Win 7 Home. It is not a clean install.

Anyone have any advice on getting windows update to work properly? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have Vista and I've tried everything.
I've set the thermal control mode in the BIOS to 'Silent' (although sometimes I look in the BIOS and it's been reset to performance). I've switched off Aero, altered the minimum and maximum processor speeds etc.

The irregular, loud fan noise is driving me up the wall! I'd rather have it running permamnently at a slightly louder volume than this! The laptop is great but if someone said "I'll give you a full refund" I would accept like a shot - purely on this irritating noisy fan every c. 30 seconds!
Can anyone help? I suspect not - I suspect Toshiba needs to work on its drivers and maybe a BIOS update. I kinda feel I'm at the 'bleeding edge' here with this purchase. I'm having other problems too which I'll post seperately.

Answer:Satellite P100-160: cooling fan kicks in noisily for 1-2 seconds every 30 seconds

Hi David

I am pretty sure that any comment like ?it is normal? will not be good enough for you but there is really no much to do. You can try to play with power settings and see if anything will be better.

Two weeks ago I have made some experiments with P100 and I have installed my Vista with required drivers and tools only. I was positive surprised how Vista runs now. If possible remove all stuff you do not need. The fact is that many preinstalled stuff runs in background and force CPU to run under pressure. I really do not see any other solution at the moment.

In my opinion it has nothing to do with drivers but maybe with BIOS. We will see if Toshiba will offer new BIOS update soon.

Hi, I have a very frustrating problem that just reared its ugly head last night. My computer started hesitating every few seconds, freezes, then starts the cycle all over again. It's difficult to do anything: browse the internet, use applications, or even type this post. I have not added any new hardware or programs recently except I upgraded Firefox last week but it has been running fine up until last night. Plus I uninstalled Firefox and it is still doing the same thing. I have Windows XP home version. So far I have deleted several programs and many other things from my computer that I could do without, I've checked my page file to see if it was correct and it was at the suggested amount, I scanned it with Norton's and it found no viruses, I scanned with Malbytes Anti-Malware and it found nothing infected, I opened up my hard drive case and cleaned/blew out the dust however it wasn't that dirty since I do this on occasion, I made sure my memory was not slipping out, I tried to defragment but my computer said that I do not need to at this time, I restored my computer back to a previous date. None of these things have made a difference. I was sure at least restoring it back would do the trick but it did not.
I'm confused to what the problem is and through my research can't seem to figure this one out on my own.
Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone had similar problems?

But right from the start I've been experiencing 1-2 second pauses in all video and even right now while typing, or while scrolling through websites. I've tried 3 different browsers, I've updated flash, run several full system virus scans. This happens in every application, whether it's hulu, facebook, playing a fully downloaded file with media player. Hello forum.

I have a month-old Dell Inspiron N7010 Core i5 460M with 6 gigs of ram running on Windows 7. Until recently, it has been starting up in about 75 seconds. However, out of nowhere, it suddenly began starting up in between 2 and a half minutes to 3 minutes. I am completely baffled, and I do not know what is wrong. Could it have been something I installed, or is it something that is beyond my knowledge. The last things I downloaded before the problems started were Starcraft II, Need for Speed World, and Microsoft Security Essentials, but I doubt one of those is the source of problem. Much help is greatly appreciated. :)

Answer:Startup time from 75 seconds to 165 seconds. What is wrong?

Hi, welcome to TSF

Of the 3 new programs you've recently installed, Microsoft Security Essentials is the most likely to affect the boot time. Check its options to see if it's set to scan at startup, and post back with the startup list from msconfig.

Alright I may not be the most computer savy person around but I've always managed to find and repair computer problems (with the exception of crashed HDDs) but this problem is odd and is driving me NUTS!

Symptoms:
Gaming HD

When I'm just on the desktop (no high demand programs/games) the computer cursor freeze (stutter) for 0.5 to 2.0 seconds every 5 to 10 seconds. Additionally the USB mouse occasionally disconnects/reconnects (with windows notification sound). I have moved USB mouse to different ports with no change. This makes it almost impossible to do anything. However youtube, netflix and DVDs (VLC) play without interruption during the stuttering.

The same occurs when playing any game only the screen freezes as well.

The same stuttering occurs on a completely separate HD which is in no way connected to the pure Gaming HD. (points to more of a hardware problem I think)

This started late last week and the only major change I did was installing homeworld remastered however I really don't think that is the cause as the separate HD also stutters.

Attempted Troubleshooting:
-The CPU and Vid Card were both pretty dusty so I took them out, cleaned and re-applyed thermal paste on the CPU --> no change to stuttering

I have an inferred temp gun and cleaning the dust did improve the temps (slightly) but no effect on the stuttering.

-Memory Diagnostic --> no problems

-Event Viewer --> WHEA event 20 error (not sure what this means but it only... Read more

Check for Malware with a reliable & trusted malware detector and same with antivirus.

Make sure you don't have a load of unecessary stuff starting with Windows.

Run the Disk Defragmenter on the system drive (usually C)

If none of that makes any difference, you may have hidden malware so please post on the malware forum for expert advice:

Run msconfig and uncheck everything on the startup tab except your anti-virus.

Then restart and let us know if the problem persists or goes away. If it goes away, the culprit is one of the items you unchecked.

For a few days now my Dell Inspiron has been lagging/freezing every few minutes for a couple of seconds.

It seems to be happening no matter what i'm doing on the laptop - playing music, playing a game and even when it's idle. The whole system freezes and if there is audio playing it makes a strange buzzing noise. Any video playing freezes and the mouse freezes too. It is only for 2 seconds at most and isn't effecting the running of the laptop, it's more of an annoyance.

I've run a full scan with Avast! and Malware Bytes. Malware came up clean, Avast! found a few low level things that have been deleted or moved to the chest/vault.

I've also run ChkDsk, which found a few errors and, i'm assuming, fixed them. I left it running over night as it took a few hours to complete.

Any help or advice is hugely appreciated!!

hi,

windows 7 x64 on my laptop (intel core i5 @ 2.50ghz, 4 gb ram) has recently started freezing for a few seconds every few seconds, when i'm doing just about anything: browsing the web, copying files, using text redactor, etc. only the mouse cursor responds, control is back after a couple of seconds.

* the behaviour remains the same when booting in the safe mode
* there are no cpu or memory usage peaks in process explorer
* there are no hardware conflicts in device manager
* there are no critical errors in system log
* there is no antivirus active
* hardware tests (memory, etc.) do not report any errors

i suspect this has started after i've updated all the drivers from manufacturer's site, but i am not 100% sure. anyway, i do not know which driver has caused this and i cannot easily restore to the previous state.

how do i find the culprit?

Answer:windows 7 freezes for a few seconds every few seconds

Hi did you get the drivers from the laptop makers site do they have a older version of your video driver which you could try this is really trial and error to find the culprit but since it is freezing the video driver is as good a place to start

My computer occasionally freezes for about 4-5 seconds in 4 second intervals; the cursor will not move during freeze and all audio/video loops itself during these freezes.  This typically seems to happen when I am viewing streaming content on the web.  I typically will have a window open while I am working in another program such as Photoshop or Maya 2008.  I have the most up to date graphics card driver and I downloaded the latest flash player.  Sometimes I will be working on unrelated stuff offline and the freezing will kick in randomly even if I haven't even been online for that session.  Other things I notice are on occasional cold days when I boot up my computer the fan inside sounds louder than usuall until windows has loaded and then it quiets down again.I have Kaspersky Anti-virus 2009 and the latest Spybot Search and Destroy, both fully updated.  I get tracking cookies to pop up in Spybot S&D and I promptly remove them and no viruses or trojans show up in my Kaspersky full scan logs, just some vunerabilities from old program files and such that I kept after upgrading to a new mother board and cpu.  I took my old C: and put in a folder called "Old System" and put it on my second hard drive E:.  Windows got a fresh re-install and I began installing my programs over again into C: after the upgrade.  Keep in mind that the mobo, cpu, and windows install was all professionally done by a shop that built ... The computer is constantly stopping for 15 seconds and then continuing for 10 seconds.

My computer was new mid-May '03 and when I installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 6.0 I began to have a lot of problems... and ultimately uninstalled it.

The Roxio program caused about 20 Windows XP (looks like backups) in the Control Panel add/remove program (one of them I cancelled).

I have XP -30 GIGs, 4 drives (32FAT a portable pocket drive & NTFS) plus I have a portable pocket drive.

Does anyone have problems with XP and Roxio Easy CD Creator?
Thanks for any help.

Pretty much the title here. Except sometimes it will work just fine if I'm not doing too much. The startup also hangs after the splash logo to the login screen for about 10 seconds. In build 7000, there was no lag at all. Any ideas? Driver suggestions? Not sure....

Thanks!

Answer:RC hangs ~every 4 seconds for about 2-3 seconds

Hello Iceman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You may just have a corrupted or bad installation. You might try a clean install to see if it will run better for you this time around.

I have searched a lot, and found no one that had the same problem. Maybe similar, but not identical. Since I built my PC (very first one I might add) I had no problems like this, but lately, it's been acting crazy. I am just doing my stuff, minding my own business, when all of a sudden, everything stops and is unresponsive for a few seconds. Things work again for maybe 5 seconds, and stuff freezes once more. And it's not always everything, sometimes maybe my internet browser will freeze, maybe an opened folder, maybe a tab in Google Chrome, sometimes 2 things out of 5 running, sometimes a portion of a program, like I can't scroll down, but I can click on things. When audio plays, it starts to repeat like a scratched CD, and things become unresponsive. When I turn off audio, everything runs smoothly either for a couple hours, or a couple of seconds. I scanned my PC for viruses, nothing, scanned for malware, had a few entries which I cleaned, but didn't help, defragmented my PC, which didn't help at all, and I ask you, what may the problem be? I try to avoid formatting, for I suspect (and hope) it's hardware problem. I have 2GB RAM, Asus mobo, which probably causes all the problems like it always does, Geforce 9600 graphics card, AMD athlon x2 dual core. I tried the obvious, just as turning off background programs, checking unnecessary things in processes, and ran out of ideas, so I want to know if there is a known solution to this.

Thank you
Daniel

How long has it been since you took a can of compressed air and blew the dust bunnies out of the heatsink and fans in that case? If you have not done that, this should be the first thing you do. You also need to list all specs.

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Windows 10's message was typically IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, suspecting a driver issue I reformatted to 8.1 which I am on now. The message I'm getting now is PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.
Hardware/full build: Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GAMING X 8G, Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower - System Build - PCPartPicker
My strongest suspect is memory, however HeavyLoad ran for 4+ hours maxing both memory and CPU before the system decided to restart. I also ran a Memtest86+ which passed multiple times. I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.

Edit: Posted this on the wrong forum! DOH. Reported as this is for Windows 8, not 7.

Tonight I am getting a lot of the following errors in the event log. This is while the computer was remaining idle on the login screen. I'm running WoW now and there are none to be seen.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Answer:100% CPU usage, 100% Disk usage, cooling fans full speed

Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

I have 50GB of hard drive space reporting as unusable, seems to be the system restore data. Disk Cleanup reports the max limit for system restore is set to 7GB, but the actual used is 50GB. How can the actual exceed the max quota? I deleted all previous restore points, and did a disk cleanup, but nothing changes.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.

Answer:High CPU usage, low GPU usage at times(stutter) gtx 1070

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks
