USB Drive - Erased???!?!!

Question: USB Drive - Erased???!?!!

I have a Western Digital 80GB external HD, connects through USB.Works great. Have backups for both machines on it.Having trouble - as noted in Windows forum - with one machine booting. I ran a backup on Friday, but downloaded some stuff Sunday. So I plug the HD into my machine, boot off the UBCD4WIN CD, and my external HD doesn't appear when it's done booting....So I unplug it, and plug it into my "good" machine, and it's NOT RECOGNIZED!!!!Reboot, still NOT RECOGNIZED!!!!! If I click on the Safely Remove Hardware tray icon, it shows "USB Mass Storage" device... But it's not mapped anywhere!!!I don't care HOW it happened... How can I recover my data???!?!?(And before the finger-waggers post - there is no "Safely Remove Hardware" option in UBCD's shell....)

Preferred Solution: USB Drive - Erased???!?!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Erased Q: drive

I was trying to backup my system to the Windows 7 OS and accidentally erased the Q: drive from the list of Hard Disk drive partitions --- is this a problem. I was able to finally backup my system. Thanks

x201....3249-CTO....i7....4GB RAM....64-bit OS....Windows 7

Answer:Erased Q: drive

hey Thor, the backup of your system occurred before or after the deletion of Q: ?Anyway the Q: drive contains data which is normally used by the Recovery Disc (made by Rescue & Recovery software) to restore the unit.Think about how some other computer companies where their computers have a hidden partition that contains system files. This is what the Q: on your unit is.

Answer:Help erased pen drive by mistake

What do you mean by "erased my pen drive" did you just delete the contents or have you formatted it? Tell us exactly what you did. (and don't try to use it until you have told us the full details as you may inadvertently overwrite files)
Someone will then be able to suggest the best program to recover contents. I assume they are a mixture of files, pics and documents etc?

I have an HP Pavilion. It came with no Windows 7 installation disk. It does have a D: partition that contains the files for system repair or re-installation.

My PC will no longer boot after my virus software reported an unspecified error.

When attempting to boot, I am given four choices besides going straight to Windows:
- Boot menu (which merely offers the choices that are on the boot priority list in Set-up)
- Set-up (which offers no choices that appear useful)
- Diagnostics (which checks several things and says they are okay)
- System recovery (which will not run)

There is another option, not listed but shown on the HP website, of pressing F8, which is apparently another route to system recovery. F8 also fails to run anything.

I have a System Repair Disk, but when I use this, it doesn't find my Windows 7 on the C: (boot) drive. It finds the image, or whatever it is, on the D: partition. So Startup Repair finds nothing to repair and accomplishes nothing.

The System Restore option will "restore" to an 8/1/2013 restore point, saying all is fine. But my PC still won't boot. I can select the 7/24/2013 restore date, and System Restore says the restore failed for an unspecified reason. The 7/1/2013 restore point will "restore", but my PC still won't boot.

The System Recovery Options include a command prompt. When I go there and try to do a directory of C: drive, it shows nothing but an empty root directory. However, I can see al... Read more

Answer:C: drive apparently erased

First thing I would do is contact HP, tell them that your drive crashed and that you need full-restore media to reinstall the OS to a new drive. They will probably agree to sell you that set of disks (or maybe, only a single DVD) for a small sum -- a LOT less than going out and buying Win7 on your own. That gives you a way to do a factory restore of Win7 on your PC without having a working version of Win7

Your second problem is that even if you could do a full backup of your existing hard drive (to then restore those files to the new drive), a full backup would retain any infection that exists in the current setup =-- something you don't want on your rebuilt system. So, unless others have a better suggestion, I would remove the xisting drive and later, use data recovery software to pull individual files and folders off that drive.

Third, unless you have a way to save off the contents of the existing drive and then wipe it, you're probably going to have to buy a new drive. IF you do the factory restore using HP media, you could use this drive, but that likely will wipe the drive and everything on it -- so you would have to save off your valuable data first -- which requires another PC to do this.

I wanted to test drive Ubuntu and install it TOGETHER with my Windows Vista. However, the Ubuntu installing failed and somehow corrupted and can't continue the installation. So right this moment, I'm still on "test drive" mode in Ubuntu that is running on a CD drive. Apparently it erased all my hard drive because I can't boot into Windows (won't load at all) and the F11 recovery partition would not load either. This computer did not come with a recovery disk (I have the HP m8000n) and it's refurbished I just realised that these computers have these stickers that contain the product key.

Since I do have the product key on the side of my comp, would it be possible for me to attain a copy of Windows Vista Home Edition CD from my friend and use my product key? I happen to have an OEM machine... so would that affect it as well?

Someone suggested i get the recovery kit from HP but dont these disks need thesystem recovery drive partition to work? So i guess that isnt an option.

Thanks for the help, i appreciate all the help i recieve!

So I saw this video: Where Do Deleted Files Go? - YouTube

And wondered if you run the 'clean all' command in diskpart would that properly erase the data on the drive, or does it just make the space appear available in the same way deleting a file does when deleting in Windows? This isn't to help me or anything I was just curious if there is anyway whatsoever to properly erase data without destroying the physical drive.

Thanks for reading.

Answer:Can files be properly erased from a drive?

Clean All completely overwrites the sectors on a hard drive with 0's, making the data very difficult to recover (I'm not sure about impossible), whereas, deleting the file simply hides the file from the file system. The Clean switch just overwrites one sector where the file resides with one 0, simply hiding the file again.

I have a studio 1537 Vista laptop computer, It's crashed on me over 8 times, and last time I got advice...apparantly not very good advice from a friend to delete my D drive partition. I re did the C drive with no problem but when the computer reinstalled itself I noticed my D drive wasn't there like he said it would be. I reinstalled my computer to factory settings by the reinstall CD that came with the laptop...please someone help, tell me step by step how to reconfigure my hard drive to get D back. This is driving me nuts. Thanks!

Answer:I erased my D drive when I reset my computer

Depending on how you have reinstalled your OS.When you go through the Windows install it asks what harddisk to install the OS on and if you want to format it (advanced menu). When you get here you need to partition the disk. Partition 1 will be your OS, so decide on the size you want for C drive. With the rest of the space you can just leave as unpartitioned space. When the OS is installed goto start > My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. You will see unallocated space. Right click and format and assign drive letter D. This will be your D drive. Hope this makes sense.

Hi, I had a 19.1 GB Gateway Desktop w/ WIN ME installed on it. I tried to install XP on it, not knowing that I needed a bigger hard drive, and (making a long story short) ended up erasing my hard drive. I bought a new computer and gave the Gateway to my cousin and now I'm trying to help her w/ fixing it.  :-? (and I don't know tooo much about the hardware side of computers lol)  I was just wanting to know, could she replace the old, erased hard drive with a new Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80 GB Internal Hard Drive and then install Windows XP on the computer? Would we need anything else (like a boot disk) in order to install the hard drive? Sorry if these questions sound dumb but I'm clueless when it comes to actually programming the computer lol. As far as we know, the hard drive is erased. When you turn the computer on, the Gateway screen comes up and then it goes to a DOS screen (and I know nothing about DOS!!) I know I can physically replace the hard drive, I won't know what to do if a DOS screen comes up lol. Anyway..... *hopefully I don't come off as a complete idiot* lol Any help at all is appriciated! Thanks in advance!~ Kimmy

Answer:? about replacing an erased hard drive

The new hard drive will be no problem at all. No drivers needed to install it. You do however have to format it so after you have installed it in the machine boot up with the Western Digital cd in and run the disk prep tools. As to XP you might want to hold off on that since it was an ME machine and the hardware requirements might be a bit slim.Try and go for Win2K it's stable and basically XP without all the eye candy...patio.  8-)p.s. You can remove the old HDD for now until you are up and running...You can then add it on as a slave drive and use it for extra storage.Remember to set the jumper on the WD new drive at master and hook it to the end of the flat ribbon cable on IDE1p.s.s.  The power connector (4 pin is flat on one side) flat side towards the bottom of the drive. The ribbon cable can onlu go in one way as well there is a stub in the center that goes towards the top of the drive. Take your time pay attention and don't force anything and you should be runnin in no time...

Ok,
So I recently got fed up with my old Compaq laptops and got myself a mac all in one.

I was told at the Apple store that I can use my external hard drive on both the mac and the compaq. I tried to use it to put my files on the mac, but when I did only some of the files transferred, and when I went to open it up again on the compaq, it would not detect the external hard drive at all.

So now I do not have 90% of the files, and no computers will detect the external hard drive.

I bought a file recovery program from seagate, but that's confusing as well.

I want to be able to get my files back, and use my external hard drive again. I'm not sure if either is possible...
I'm not sure where to go from here, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!!!!

I've been using my external hardrive for backup for a couple of years. Today my computer would not allow me access: error message. I tried rebooting - no good. I scanned the drive for viruses. Message said it found and corrected a few errors. This time I gained access - only to find that the drive was blank. Message said "This folder is empty."

Tried hooking it up to my laptop - same message. Any ideas how I can recover my data? All my videos and raw footage are also on this drive.

thanks.

Answer:external hard drive appears to be erased

What is the error message you are getting when you try to access the drive? this will help us to figure out what is going on and chances are the data is still there and may have just been marked for deletion so its flagged by the OS as to not be shown to you, you can try many unerase programs, or if you have a linux distro or live cd pop that in and boot up and see if linux sees the files, I just had the same sorta issue with my external windows was telling me nothing was there but I popped it into linux and now I can see all the info and its still intact.

Interesting problem.....I backed up files to an external hard drive last night. When I came back this morning and started using the computer, I received an error saying:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

After this, I checked the external hard drive and all of the files were gone. There were two folders that they were stored in and the folders themselves are still there, but the files are not. Also, the computer has been running extremely slow since the windows update ran about two weeks ago. Also, there was an error message coming up complaining about the virtual memory, so I adjusted the size of the page file.

I did some research on Google, but didn't really find a concrete answer....anyone have any ideas or heard of this happening before?

You are in trouble. To get it back you must perform a factory restore- which means losing all your files and you would need a recovery disk. Would upload the files from my old D:\ recovery drive, but it is UNIQUE for each computer.

When the time came for me to finally say bye bye to all the previous items on the former drive since I was now using the SSD for OS and applications I formated using the Win7 startup disc. I cannot boot from the SSD nor does it even show in Device Manager (I'm gonna check the connections for that) This information is still recoverable I know but what's the best way to go about it. Will I be able to use the SSD to boot widows again if I repair this one thing? Can I at least get my files back somehow? Any help is appreciated...Thanks

DISKPART

SELECT DISK 0 (confirm this is Win7 HD #)
LIST PARTITION
SELECT PARTITION 1 (confirm this is Win7 partition #)
ACTIVE
EXIT

Now boot back into Repair console, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to write the MBR to Win7.

I just plugged my external hard drive into a firewire plug of a Mac. I'm a PC person and do not know much about macs. After a while of looking for where the mac had a shortcut to my hard drive, i gave up. When i disconnected the hard drive a menu came up with the option to ignore, repair or try again... i tried all three. none of them got my hard drive to load up on the mac.

When i plugged my PC back up with the external hard drive, it says that it needs to be formatted... it no longer recognizes the old name or shortcuts that i had for it. I had my life in pictures, music and videos in that hard drive. I truly need to recover it. Is there anything I can do?

how can I repair it? or basically, how can i get my old files out and reformat it... any option will do. Please, help.

I filmed a youtube video, because its hard to explain it in just words...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN87lAB4lfY

but baiscally I reinstalled windows due to some problems i was having, Everything was normal, it was like I had a brand new computer again, everything is "fresh and new",

except for the fact that my hard-drive, it still has the same amount of space left on, as it did before I even restored(which could be a good thing, because I still have my files...i guess???)

however, since it is like "new" again, all my old files, my old documents are reset...

so how do I go about accessing my old files and such, they have to be there somewhere, because if they wern't, I would have a full hard-drive correct? thanx

Answer:So I reinstalled windows,but hard-drive didnt get erased??

Well like you said, all your program files are still there n your HDD space is still the same, so your files should still be there. Trying running a search on one of your files and see

Another thing is that, the dialog box that says you dun have access to that folder you click. What user profile are you logging in as when you did this.

My guess is that, you had a different profile say jeff when you save this files and had accidentally made the access to this files private so only user jeff can access.

When you restore using the CD, was the previous user profile removed or was it intact.

I got a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive, plugged it in, the drivers were installed (little pop up window saying so), then I decided to format the drive 'cause it came with all this stuff on it.

The thing is I erased the folder that said 'drvinstall' was that a mistake? Will the PC not recognize it or auto-install a driver without it?

I haven't unplugged it yet, and am wondering if I should put anything on it before I do so.

Answer:Erased DrvInstall folder on external hard drive.

The drivers are included with Windows, and were installed by Windows. That happens the first time you plugin a new external HDD or flash drive.

I filmed a youtube video, because its hard to explain it in just words...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN87lAB4lfY

but baiscally I reinstalled windows due to some problems i was having, Everything was normal, it was like I had a brand new computer again, everything is "fresh and new",

except for the fact that my hard-drive, it still has the same amount of space left on, as it did before I even restored(which could be a good thing, because I still have my files...i guess???)
however, since it is like "new" again, all my old files, my old documents are reset...
so how do I go about accessing my old files and such, they have to be there somewhere, because if they wern't, I would have a full hard-drive correct? thanx

If you dont have anything you want to save you can wipe the drive. If you change the board on this up grade you can use the old drive as  a slave along with the new drive.

Ok...I have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete. " So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.
I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive. Can anyone help please?

Hey All,
I have a windows xp machine, a Lenovo 3000 j series tower. It has:
athlon x 2 4000+ dual core @ 2.1ghz
2gb ram
160gb hard drive - erased with no OS.
I would like to install windows 7 home edition. What's the best way to do this? Will the windows xp COA work on windows 7?

Answer:How to install windows 7 on an widows xp machine with erased hard drive?

As has been mentioned before, an XP product key is not applicable at all to Windows 7. To install Windows 7 you will need either the full product (OEM or consumer version) in which case it can be installed directly using its own product key, or a Windows 7 upgrade pack. The upgrade is also supplied with its own product key, but is intended to be installed as an upgrade to a functioning Windows installation. It can however only directly upgrade Windows Vista - even where a valid XP COA licence exists, a fresh installation needs to be done, so an erased hard drive is fine:

I wanted to convert my Sony Vaio back to Windows 7 after updating to Windows 8 last year. I tried using the recovery disks that I created when I got the laptop. It told me that I couldn't reinstall. So after trying multiple things, I finally decided to wipe out the entire hard drive thinking that it would automatically reinstall Windows 7 64 bit. Now when I try to reinstall, it can't find a drive to install it to and all I have is a black screen now telling me Operating System Not Found....please help so that I can reinstall Windows 7 64 bit on my Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX with a 500 GB SATA Hard drive and 6 GBs of RAM.

I'm thinking I may need to create a partition so that when I put the recovery DVD in to reinstall Windows, it has a drive to install the software onto. I don't know how to create a partition or if that will solve my issue. My laptop is now worthless. Also, I can't access BIOS. I completely erased the entire hard disk.

Answer:Erased hard drive to reinstall Win 7 but now won't reinstall

Jim depends on how you set the wipe up and how you formated it mate look at this and if you have access to another machine do it.
If the drive is wiped clean then follow this it says for SSD's but will also work on spinners

I started with a virus that created popups, redirected me after clicking on website lists in google, mirrored google's page and also wouldn't allow me to start the computer in safe mode, because it would blue screen. I ran a few programs like Malwarebytes, and it cleaned some stuff out and stopped popups. But, the redirecting, mirroring, and blue screening continued.

As a last resort, I wanted to scan with combofix. It said it found rootkit virus and needed to restart. Upon startup, I thought it was scanning and creating a log, but in fact it erased all my documents, pictures, and all other files and programs. I tried to use a previous set point to retrieve things, knowing it probably wouldn't work.

So here's the kicker- I now have all the programs I did before they were wiped out, but all of my files are still gone, including all the logs I gathered from scans. Oh, right, and the mirroring portion of the virus is still lingering.

Have I screwed this up beyond repair? Is there a way to get my files back and still get rid of this virus? Please help!

Question: OS ERASED????

OH NO! I run (use to run) Windows 10. Everything was working fine mostly with my beautiful PC. Then, one day, poof! I was forced to either "update and restart" or "update and shutdown" I chose to restart. I came back to my PC to find that it was wanting me to reinstall Windows 10. I thought "ok, this is weird but, maybe its part of the update?". No, it definitely wasn't. No matter what I have tried (even my recovery disc) nothing is working! Please please please help! I have way too many important projects! I've even tried reformatting the local disk. I have a secondary Hard drive with the more important files.

Question: HDD erased?

OK, so one of my users has apparently completely erased his HDD. When you try to boot the system, it first displays an "IDE device failed error." So you hit F1 and then you get a "Non-system disk or disk error".

I got into the diagnostics and tried to run a hard drive test--it came back immediately stating "no hard drive installed". So I checked all of the cables, reseated everything, and tried again: same result.

So I removed the HDD and plugged in as a slave in another machine, but I can't initialize it all, so I can't access it.

1. I have no idea how he did this (he stated that he was just trying to view some backup info on a CD)
2. Does anyone have any ideas on if any of the data on the drive might be recoverable? And if so, how do I get to it?

I'm going to talk to him again and try to figure out exactly what happened, but I'm not hopeful.

Question: Erased Hdd

Hi hope someone can help. A friend of my got a new HDD and wanted me to ghost his old drive to the new drive, so I did, I left his house while it was ghosting and then he rang me and I told him how to change the boot order in the BIOS so it would boot off the new HDD. I assumed he did it right and just went over a few days later to wipe his old HDD using G Disk wipe/mbr and theN gdisk /cre /pri /for /q to repartiion to use as storage I then notice after I restarted that it wasn't booting when I went into the BIOS I noticed that the old HDD was still the first boot choose so it has been loading from the old one still. I assumed once again that it was alright since I ghost the drive over to the new one but when I went to boot from the new hdd only the windows screen comes up and it just stays there. I loaded up Reatogo CD and I am able to see the folders and stuff in the new HDD but not sure what is causing the problem. As I am still new to working on computers. Any ideas?? Would I be albe to just insert an Windows XP CD and try to recovery XP from it?? would that delete any files on the HDD?? Or it there a way to recovery the Old HDD to the orginal state??? Thanks for any help

Answer:Erased Hdd

You might be able to fix the new drive with the XP CD, either recovery, or, start an install and use the repair feature. But, if the ghost didn't go proper, then you'll have to do it again or install the OS and use the old drive as a slave and save the information. As far as recovering the old drive to the original state, well drives get old and wear out, so it may or may not work...Save the data to another source and retire it, if need be..And, as long as you don't delete data from the old drive, or format, then it should be recoverable...

Question: second HDD erased

i recently reinstalled windows xp pro.. i have two HDD's and i unplugged my backup drive that had all my music, pic, vid files on it prior to the reinstallation.. i reinstalled windows, booted down, then hooked the second HDD back up and now all my files are gone.. windows is now on F drive for some reason and the my backup HDD was assigned a different drive letter.. i have changed the drive back to what it was orignally but there is still nothing.. i have tried to use a resort program to retrieve the deleted data but it doesnt see my old files.. help, this is 8 years worth of pics and music downloads..

Answer:second HDD erased

It may appear redundant, but try removing the drive again, restarting without it, shutting down again, reinstalling and restarting. This time however, do a quick check in the BIOS to make sure all is recognized correctly and boot back to windows. The drive letter will not matter, but the data should still be there (unless you took out the drive and rested it on a large speaker magnet) so it is worth trying to see if you can get it properly recognized. ((do not save anything to the drive unless all possibilities are exhausted)) Second, Check with the hard disk drive manufacturer's website under support to see if they can help you with recovery if above did not help.

Question: OS can be erased?

I bought T400 last week,  I don't like OS preinstalled on my notebook and the way how my hard drive partitioned, If I erase the harddrive and install my favorite OS, my laptop is still under warranty? thanks

Answer:OS can be erased?

I am 99% sure that changing an OS would not void your warranty. Lenovo might not help you with driver problems under Linux or Hackintosh, though. But anyway - you can always create system recovery DVDs before installing a new OS.  And restore the default OS in case you're sending the laptop to warranty.

Answer:I erased my Driver

You may have to fresh install your laptop hard drive. I hope you have backups. I did the same damn thing on my laptop. I was no able to restore the sound drivers. Also I had not installed Norton Goback or XP Backup.

I reinstalled from the laptop CD, deleted the bloat-ware and reinstalled all my programs. I also installed norton go back.

laptops can be a pain to back up because you don't have a second internall hard drive to back up to. I only have a small 10GB external hard drive I use to transfer stuff from one computer to another.

I think a clean reinstall would be the best bet in your case. If you have any personal files you can move off the laptop, do so before reinstalling.

All the shortcuts look like blank file icons, as well with all the shortcuts in the taskbar. Even when I click on Control Panel, or my computer I get this message, "File is not recognized would you like windows to remove this" something like that. I tried using recovery windows by pressing F11, I tried the windows automatic repair twice, it didn't work, I went to use a system restore point, but I never had set one. Is there any way I can get my pc with all the files it had hopefully on it? I have the windows installation disc, which I burned that I downloaded off of the MicroSoft RiverDigital website. Can I possibly use? Please help anyone. Yes, you can move your files off fairly easily, but you'll need to reinstall unless you made a backup of the registry beforehand. Just download any Linux live CD, such as Ubuntu or something smaller and you'll be able to acces... Read more

Question: Bookmarks erased

When I turned on my PC firefox's settings were reset to default and all my bookmarks were gone. Why?

Then I typed my problem into google and was directed to a post here which told me I should convert the backup version of the file into an html. Before I did that I noticed two versions of bookmark.html files -- bookmark.html and bookmark-1.html. Opening bookmark-1 revealed my old bookmarks. So I switched the names around and sent the other version to my recyle bin hoping that would work. No dice.

Then I noticed that the file in the recycle bin was much larger than the present bookmark file. I restored it and it shrunk back to the same size as the new version of the bookmark file.

The backup, when switched to an html ending turned out to be the new bookmark file.

All very confusing.

So now I have three version of my new bookmarks (1 entry) and can't find the bookmarks I'd been accumulating for almost a year! What happened and is there any chance of me finding my old bookmarks?

I followed your instructions and FINALLY got rid of all the pop ups I had. But while I was trying to get rid of them, maybe before I came here for help, I think I erased more than I should have.

When I start up my PC a black box pops up that says "C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcpvit.exe" at the top. It just sits there. When I hit the "X" in the upper right corner it goes away after asking me if I am sure I want to exit it. Then the PC goes through the rest of its booting up. I don't have any other problems until I try to make a back up to a CD, or try to copy a CD. I don't know if these two are related. When I try to write to a CD with CD Writer, I get the message "There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable."

If you have version 1.5 of Firefox, then there is a folder called bookmarkbackups (in your profile directory) that contain revisions of your bookmarks. Just import them back into your browser.

In XP, you can find it here...

It's as if all the programs were deleted.
The names of some of the programs are still there,
but on mouse-over out slides an [empty] notification.

(but, almost all of the programs are safe & sound in the Programs file)

AND! Administrative Tools is gone!, excuse me: [empty]

Accessories is gone & can not be reinstalled.
everything that used to be there is [empty] as well.

with all that happened when I reformatted the hard-drive 2 weeks ago,
(down to 9GB memory while there should be 40GB!*)
*see previous post

I don't want to do that again! I'm afraid, I'll have NO memory at all!

thank you so much for your time and bother

Answer:Help, Please - some OS files erased & no OS cd

Here's an update:
Items 'pinned to start menu' work
Programs sent to Desktop (making a shortcut) work

Sent all programs I could to the desktop.
Ran the Clean-up Desktop Wizard which
put all the Shortcuts from the programs into a file on the desktop.

Opened up this file of Unused Desktop Shortcuts
Copied entire contents to the Program file Under each logon's Start Up Menu.

Now I have all these 'short cuts' on the start-up menus.

I'm beginning to 'drag & drop' each shortcut to it's program's place on the menu

(you know, the place where the program should be, but instead is [empty] )

....what a long way around when you don't know anything about registry -eh?

As for the deleted Accessories, and Administrators Tools,
I'm into my other XP computer finding just what the files are that are 'gone'
for example:
Event Viewer is: eventvwr.msc /s located:
c:\WINDOWS\System32\eventvwr.msc /s

so, I click on the Start Menu > Right Click All Programs > open
in this file folder Click file> new > shortcut
browse to eventvwr.msc /s

and viola! ON the Start Menu:
A shortcut to Event Viewer.
rename the shortcut to Event Viewer
drag and drop it to Administrators Tools Folder

almost as good as new-right?

sigh - time intensive.

Ok, so I'm a fool. I was formating a USB drive to make it bootable for a live linux distro...and not paying attention I erased the MBR for my C: drive and not the USB drive.

Now, I'm afraid to reboot my laptop, becuase it probably won't boot back into windows now.

Is there anything I can do before I reboot/shutdown to fix my mistake. If not, I also have the XP install disc if that can somehow get me back in (without doing a complete re-install of XP).

Any ideas before I reboot???

Incase it helps...The program I was using when I made the mistake was a Slax boot installer that alows you to make a flash drive bootable like a CD.

I'm not sure what will happen when I reboot. :-(

This is the only way I know to replace the MBR unless you have used a program that has copied it previously, which I doubt since you didn't mention it. Maybe someone else has an idea or knows another way that doesn't make you have to restart that laptop.

I have a HP computer with lightscribe installed. I have made many dvd movies on my computer using Memorex, TDK, etc. blank dvd's. Six months ago I purchased some HP Lightscribe DVD-R 16x dvd's. I made 12 movie dvd's on them. After I burn all my movies I always test them on my Sony dvd player hooked up to my tv. After I test the dvd, I always make another copy for my daughter. I have viewed these 12 dvd's at least 3 times over the last 6 months and so has my daughter. 4 weeks ago I went to watch one of these dvd's and my dvd player wouldn't play it. I tried it on another dvd player and it wouldn't work and then tried on my computer and still wouldn't work. I then tried watching the other 11 movies made on lightscribe dvd's and only 7 out of the 12 would work. I called my daughter and asked her to try hers and she later informed me that 5 of hers wouldn't work either. I tried calling HP and they had no idea why the information on the dvd was erased. They kept saying something must be wrong with my burner or I didn't burn them correctly. I told them if that were true, then why was I able to view them at least 3 times each. I then went to the computer store and they couldn't understand either. I called HP back and they wouldn't even let me return them because I don't have a receipt. Has anyone heard of information being erased like this before?

Question: Erased programs

I turned on my Y510 this morning and the screen showed an unfamiliar screen regarding 'partition C' and then proceeded to 'recover' and re-installing Windows Vista.....which ended up removing all my files and programs....Is there any way to restore all the files and programs that disappeared??? Thanks for any help... randycocco

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Erased programs

randycocco, please read manual for One Key Recovery that is bundled with your laptop. It explains al you have encountered.Besides, NOVO recovery makes a warning on daaging data and so on. Ifyou read carefully what's on screen and not just push buttons it will not result such things...You may try using R-Studio, recuva software to recover your files, but I think it will have zero result - most of your files are overwritten by new OS.

I let my 8 year old son play on my laptop and he went to miniclips.com and played a couple games. He logged off the computer and shut it down when he was done. I was nearby and did not notice anything unusual happening while he was on the computer. When I went to log back into my laptop everything was erased. My documents, pictures, desktop icons, music... everything is gone. I have no clue what happened and he swears he did not go into anything else or press any strange buttons. I have McAfee so I thought I was protected from any problems like this but I just am not sure what happened. I tried to complete a system restore with no luck. I have no clue what to do. I was hoping to get everything back but I don't know how to do that. My computer is also not working well so I am hoping to at least get my computer working again. Any suggests are appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I have recently made a dumb error of forgetting to test the free upgrade from win 7 to win 10. After a month, when I returned, my HP mini 5103 turned out to be almost frozen (you have to wait for minutes for a menu to unfold). I wanted to return to win 7 but the new win 10 had already erased it. Microsoft has washed hands because the win 7 was a preinstalled copy and suggested turning to the producer of the hardware - HP. Now, I can not find any place on the hp online service network that would offer any assistance in solving the problem, but perhaps I am only a novice failing to see what is in front of me, or is it? Is there anybody in the community who has already dealt with similar problems or heard of a solution to it. I would much appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance.

Answer:how to get ISO for win 7 back after win 10 erased it

HI. Here I leave the ISO of windows 7, you need a software like rufus, to mount it in a pendrive: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 English64-bit Download32-bit Download Links valid for 24 hours from time of creation.Links expire: 12/4/2016 11:21:49 AM UTC The recommended thing in your situation is to request the recovery discs of your equipment http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

Dear All...I have just purchased an HP X2 Detachable PC - 10-P010NR. There was a major issue of memory with Windows 10 64x on a 32GB internal drive, hence, I decided to remove all the programs from it. Things were going fine till, my windows re-installation stuck @ 33% and I rebooted the PC.  From then, I tried everthing and even clean my internal drive space, thinking that I will be able bo boot it again with USB. However, I have disabled Secured Boot in BIOS, but, unable to find Legacy option and hence, unable to booth my PC with USB. Now, it is stuck at screen stating - BOOT DEVICE NOT FOUND. PLEASE INSTALL AN OS ON YOUR HD screen. Please help and advise if anything can be done now? PC is under warranty, but is an overseas purchase.

I have apparently erased everything that was on an important flash drive. I am computer and technology illiterate really. I received a flash drive but when i tried to play the content windows 10 said it could not read it. So i looked on youtube for a fix. I tried one method where you had to go to each of your external ports i guess is the best way i can explain it. You updated each port and this was suppose to help, but it didn't so the next step was to delete each individual port and the tutorial said when you re-inserted things in your port the usb port would reload itself i guess. This did not work so i went to another tutorial where i was instructed to go into "command and prompt" as the administator. We found all the disks on the computer: however, the tutorial only had 2 things on their computer and when i commanded it to find disk there were like 7. So i followed the instructions which said we had to delete the disk and then "clean" another disk. I realize this is probably not making sense since i do not know computers. I deleted the flashdrive and cleaned what i thought was the right disk. After this the computer was suppose to go back to the settings screen where all your drives are and your flashdrive was suppose to be there and i was suppose to be able to read it now. Obviously that screen never came up and when i went back to the settings the drive does not even show up, it can't be found. It was drive F and apparently i have deleted ... Read more

Welcome to Major Geeks!

At this point, I don't know if you are having malware problems or not. You may have just erased/deleted your cache info that stored you passwords and encryption key. The below will helps us figure out if you have malware.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only... Read more

I used this program "Large Drive Tools" to erase my HD. I did this because I was getting constant errors in Windows XP Pro so I wanted to do a fresh restart. After the erase, I tried using my XP Pro Boot Install CD. It will bring me to the screen where it asks to eiter install a new Windows XP, Repiar Windows XP. I chose to install a new copy and then it says it did not detect a HD. So I went back into the LDT program and tried making a partition and it still gave me the same problem. I tried using the HD manufactures diagnostic boot program but that also says it cannot detect the HD. I'm at a lost now, any ideas on what I need to do?

HD - Seagate 320GB SATA 1.5mb

However, the computer BIOS does detect the HD.

Answer:Erased HD, now won't detect it

Hi and welcome. You need to load the SATA drivers first. I think the install CD should ask if you need to do that.

Hello,

I erased 3-cd's using the XP wizard and now they are not found. It says please insert disc when I try to add new data with the XP wizard. Other discs do work just not the erased ones. The DVD-RW E drive properties shows used space 0 and free space 0 on these discs.

The device manager shows this drive, Pioneer DVD-WR DVR-K14L, the drivers are up to date. The laptop is a Vaio PCG-K37 with XP home edition. The discs are TDK CD-RW High Speed Data.

How can I use these discs again?

Thanks

Answer:Can't rewite erased CD-RW

Question: Contacts erased

Dear Pc Review.
My problem is this. I recently received an email which started,
Dear friend.
It was an add for an online shop dealing mainly with electronic goods who's web address was (edit : link removed) The email came from a recognised source so I opened it. On seeing what it was for I deleted it imediately. I did not forward it to anyone else. But the damage had been done. I started getting emails from friends and work asking me what it was about. I told them not to open it as it was not from me. This was about 12/05/08. Today 15/05/08 I checked my emails as usual but only to find my entire contacts list, all my email addresses have been deleted.
I have managed to copy them all down again as the message was in my sent folder with every contact that it went out too on it.
This is a brand new Lap Top and that incident happened before I managed to install any spyware or other security measures onto it. I feel such a TWAT.
What can I do? I daren't use my email account and I certainly don't want to email any of myfriends from this email account. Should I change my email account? What do you recomend.

Question: Desktop Erased

When I logged on to my computer, it didnt log on right away after clicking my profile. I have to do Ctrl+alt+delete to bring up my background. There are no icons,no start menu or that toolbar on bottom of screen. I run programs from my task manager. I have no idea what this is. It has deleted the control panel run commands. I cant use system restore to get rid of it. Also my Mcafee virus scan wont pick up anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Desktop Erased

We need more specifics of the sequence of events and about your system.

1) What operating system do you use? Windows XP, Linux or what?

2) What exactly was the sequence of events when the problem manifested? Were you booting up just prior to logging in? Was the computer on a log-in screen or what? At what point did you click on your profile?

3) How many users are on this computer? Is it a stand-alone computer?

4) What do you mean when you say "it has deleted ... " In other words, what is the 'it' you are referring to?
