Preferred Solution: aabcd Flash drive not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello friends, I'm an advanced user, I have just cleanly installed Windows 7 RTM on my Compaq Presario CQ45-205AU laptop. Every thing worked fine including the driver which I downloaded from their website(Select software and drivers Compaq Presario CQ45-205AU Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (India - English)). But when I plugged in my USB pen drive (Kingston data traveler and Moser baer) it simply didn't detect it. Though in device manager it's listing them. When I plug them Windows says the driver for this device isn't properly installed. But when I open MY computer USB icon isn't there. These pen drives are working fine in my desktop PC in which Windows XP is installed. I guess Windows 7 has some driver problem regarding USB mass storage device that's why it's not installing that driver automatically for these drives. Are you folks also facing the same problem ? If not, then can you tell me some solution for it ?

Answer:Help required, USB flash drive/Pen drive not working!

I have a 1gb Kingston Data Traveler, which works just fine with my copy of Win7. As far as an idea of usb mass storage driver problems? I have also a Simple Drive, which registers as a usb mass storage device as well, no problems there. Might be a problem with your install or something.

I have a Sandisk Micro 128mb. It used to work, and then one day, it just quit working. It wasn't even recognized by Windows in any computer. The house can get over 100 degrees, could that be the problem? If so, is there anything I can do to get it working again?

Answer:USB flash drive not working

Did you unplug the usb drive without telling the hardware to disconnect on the task bar?

or it may be that you plugged it into a front usb port on a strange computer which had incorectly wired front usb ports and that killed it.

let me know if either of these are the case there may still be an option to recover the data from the key.

I have this flash drive:

And I am afraid it is dead. When I plug it in, 50% of the time, the red light constantly flashes at about 8 flashes a second, or flashes 3-4 times quickly before just shutting off and nothing happens.

If it is in constant flashing mode, I can open my windows explorer and see "Removable disk", however it is slightly transparent, and when I try to open it, it says "Please insert a drive", which leads me to believe the computer detects it, but can't read it. The properties window shows 0 bytes. Is there any hope at all of getting my ~65gb of used data off of this thing at all? Do I have to take it apart and do some soldering? Please help.

Answer:PNY 128 GB Flash Drive not working

Your flash drive probably has a damaged controller. If that data is important, best chance of retrieving your data would be a professional data recovery service. The cost of recovery depends on how extent is the damage of your disk.

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP3. My laptop is a Compaq V2000. I did all of the steps to fix and make my flash drive work. It never did work before. I just recieved it in the mail and plugged it in and recieved a Code 28 Access is denied when updating the driver for the USB Mass Storage. Steps that already tried:1. Uninstall all USB port/devices and rebooted and back everything comes. Didn't work.2. Checked the usbstor.inf and .sys. Seems like they are corrected.3. I used to have Alcohol 120, tried getting rid of stpd.sys and using uninstall stpd .exe from duplex security. Didn't work.4. Allowed permissions for users in regedit and cleaned up registry. Didn't work.5. Tried using other USB ports(only 4 of them). Didn't work.6. Works with everyone elses computers instead of mine.7. Updated Windows XP. Didn't work.8. Checked services and UPNP. They were all good.9. Downloaded the driver from official site and installed. Didn't work.10. Tried upgrading BIOS from the manufacturer website(HP). It said I had the wrong type of computer...Tried other smaller steps as well but been trying since the last two days. I really want this to work and can't consider restoring the computer because of all my stuff I have and important documents.Anyone have any more ideas I can try to make this work? Also one thing, my BIOS setup doesn't have the PnP option enable/disable option. I don't know if that will effect it. Also, when I was updating from SP2 to SP3 and with Windows XP updates, it fixed ... Read more

Answer:USB Flash Drive not working, HELP!

Go to and download and install Acronis True Image (it has a free 15 day trial) and take an image of your flash drive immediately. This way, your work is backed up somewhere else then you can try troubleshooting your flash drive.

If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one I've encountered in this situation.

When I worked at a Dell call centre, 90% of customers in dire straits handn't backed up their systems. Of those who did, 90% had had a catastrophic experience previously. BAsically, it isn't until you experience what it's like to lose or potentially lose everything THEN people get the motivation to routinely back up their important files! One of my first customers was a grad student like yourself. She was in tears because her comp got swamped with spyware and we were forced to reformat and reinstall. She lost all her grad work.

Use Acronis True Image and back up your work regularly. It's easily worth the $40!!

I have an idea of how to rescue your flash drive. I did this once for someone who had a problem reading her diskette. Do this once you have imaged your flash drive.

My Computer -> Flash Drive -> Properties -> Tools -> Error-checking -> Select both options -> Start

Hey guys, I've really come to my wit's end with this problem. I have a PNY Attache USB 2.0 Flash Drive and for some reason it is just not working. I have a Windows XP Professional, and I've already used the flash drive on it and it worked just fine. But now, all of a sudden, it just stopped working. It works fine on all my other computers, including my Vista and my second XP Professional, but for some reason it just suddenly stopped working here. When I put it into the USB port, the light on the flash drive flashes for a moment but then it doesn't do anything. The computer doesn't even act like anything is in there. The UDISK: E icon doesn't appear in the "My Computer" window and the computer basically doesn't do anything. I know it's nothing wrong with the USB port itself because it works whenever I plug anything else into it. My flash drive is fairly new and, as said before, works fine on other computers. I already checked the USB port controls and all of them are enabled. I totally don't know what to do right now, so could someone please help me?
Thank you!!

OK, this is a little strange. I have an Apacer 128Mb flash drive. On one of my computers when I plug it in it shows up as a drive, but when I try to copy files to it I get an error something like "invalid path...blah blah". When I plug this into another one of my computers it works just fine. When I try to "browse" the files on the drive nothing is showing up on computer #1 but the other all the files show fine.

I am plugging it into a port on the back of the computer (via extension cable). Now before we jump to conclusions, using this extension cable on other devices it works just fine (i.e. my Garmin GPS, Motorola Cell phone).

Any suggestions?

Answer:Flash drive not working

even though the extension cable works on other pc's try it without it anyways and also try different usb port if available.

Hi ja5219! For one reason or another (first time used on the system, etc, etc.), the computers you are inserting the player into are searching for correct drivers. Either click "Yes, this time" or "Yes, every time", and let the system look for the drivers. See if that works.

Let us know how this works out, and good luck!

You can boot a linux live cd try Knoppix
and then plug it in and see if linux sees it.
If so, get your files off, and put them either on a CD or another USB stick.

Hi can anyone help me with this problem? It started when i deleted a file from my Laptop (ntldr) by accident and i had to reload windows XP professional. Since i have done this whenever i plug my USB memory stick into the USB port it makes a noise to show it is plugged in and the "safety remove hardware" Comes up, but does NOT show up in "My computer", and does NOT come up with the little box asking what i would like to do with it and i basically cannot open files on it. I have tried updating the file but it says "The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed" I'm sure it's obvious but I'm at a complete loss as i assumed it was just needing updating? Thanks Nadia

Answer:Flash Usb Drive Not Working

Use the device manager to delete the USB adapter/controller/root hub it is on (whatever shows a yellow or red warning mark) , then reboot and let Windows find it and reinstall it.
When you get to the choice of where to get the drivers untic everything except Windows Update.

I have this drive for about a year and now it has stopped working. It won't show up on computer that I plug it into. How can I fix it?

Answer:PNY 4G flash drive not working

Does it show up in Disk Management:

You can also try the HP USB Format tool:

Have you tried it on several USB ports and better yet a completely different computer?

If neither works then the drive has failed and needs to be tossed unless it has warranty, however the cost of a new drive makes going through warranty pointless.

hi, recently my friend bought a 16gb flash drive off ebay and when it arrived it didn't work. instead of sending it back they asked me to try and fix it for them, thats where the problems lie.

I plug it into the computer, it appears in explorer but no size is displayed. when trying to open it, it just keeps loading forever until you take it out. i tried formatting it with a windows disc but all i did was turn it into a "RAW" partion. i tried to properly format it again with the same windows xp disc and it just hangs. i tried formatting with with a windows 7 disc as well and no difference. i tried formatting it with CMD and after half an hour I gave up. help!

Hi I have nera 2 year old S3, running Win7. It has a 256Gb SSD. I think the model is a 591... the barcode label is illegible now. It's been crashing a lot recently and more glitches were appearing, such as the wi-fi adaptor not working, then working again and then not working. Blue screens, system freezes. So I deceided it needed a fresh install. I had already created a flash drive boot, so put that in, changed the boot order and restarted the machine. I get to the erecovery screens, choose language and what restore option I wanted... so I chose the preserve data option. Press go and the progress bars just sit there... nothing happening. I leave it for 10 mintes or so, still nothing happening. Figure it must have crashed. Hit restart and boot into recovery mode again. So I choose the erase everything option and press go... and nothing at all happens now. I can't boot back to the old system as I get a 'bootmgr missing' message. Could the SSD be goosed?TIAChris

Hi, earlier it was working fine, & now when i plug it in nothing is found, not even in "add hardware". The phone (its in USB mode so it acts as a normal flash drive) detects the pc no problem.

I have tried everything but it can't detect anything. i have tried shorting 1 of the USB ports on the motherboard 2 see if it will "reset" somehow but didn't do anything.

Tried installing the hardware anyway, even tho it wasn't detected. nothing.

Tried restarting, kicking the pc, slamming the phone, re-installing mobo drivers, everything under the sun but its just not finding anything

is there a fix for this, i am using Vista 64bit

I have a flash drive in my TV in the USB port. I have some workouts on there that I have used since January. There are probably close to 40 workouts on there and I have done every one of them several times each. So tonight I go to play one and it plays ... for about 2 minutes and then it stops and says format not playable. The format is .mp4 but again, I have continuously used this flash drive. I then take the drive and format it on my computer. I transfer the videos back on to the drive and it does the same thing. Plays for a few minutes and then tells me the file format is not playable. Ideas?

Hi everyone, i hope someone can help me with this.

My last laptop was very unreliable and I had many problems with it; so I bought I 20gb usb flash drive to back-up my essential files, music etc.
So when my laptop completely packed up on me I thought I'd be safe. Unfortunately the drive I bought doesn't seem work on my new laptop for reasons best known only to itself.

(I know its compatible with vista because I had vista on my old laptop.)

My new laptop is an acer aspire 5738Z; I'm not very good with all the really 'technical stuff' as you can probably tell so I have no idea what information you'd need for this this problem.

When I first plugged the flash drive into the laptop it made the usual noise it always makes and it installed something automatically but then didn't recognise it beyond that.
Since then whenever I plug it in nothing happens at all. My laptop doesn't seem to register that theres anything there.

I found some general advice on another site and so went to device manager and uninstalled all the usb things it told me to. When I turned the computer back on everything re-installed but the flash drive still won't work.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the usb ports because I managed to put some songs onto my ipod when i plugged it in a couple of nights ago.

I have absolutely no idea what to do about this; I'm hoping someone else out there can make more sense of it than i can!
Thanks in advance

Hey guys. I have a problem. Yesterday, I was using SumatraPDF on my Sandisk 1GB Cruzer Micro flash drive to view a document on another flash drive. The document didn't open, so I closed SumatraPDF. Next thing you know, Windows XP reports a "Delayed Write Error" faliure noticed. I ignored it, thinking that maybe the computer was just being screwy. A couple of hours later, I wanted to use my Sandisk Flash drive. I tried to open some files on it, and they wouldn't open. Puzzled, I went to Windows Explorer to try to open the root of the flash drive, and it says "(drive letter of flash drive) is not accesible. Incorrect function". Long story short, after many hours of trying to remedy the problem, I found out after plugging it into a computer that runs Windows ME that the flash drive is still readable...just not writeable. I can't format it to try to remedy the problem, and I fear that I may have to get a new one (I've had it for over a year now, plus I used Portable Firefox/VLC Media player on it...). Is there a Sandisk utility that can force a format on this media or possible make it writeable? If not, is there a way to make it readable on Windows XP? Also, do you know of a place where it's possible to get a good 1GB flash drive at 30$ or less if I have to replace it?

Answer:Flash Drive Stopped Working

You could save everything thats on it, open "My Computer", right click on the Drive and choose "Format".

MAKE SURE YOU FORMAT IT FAT, not FAT16 or anything.

That ought to sort it out.

Something is wrong with my flash drive. I've been saving files to it, and each time before disconnecting I go to "stop" the drive before removing it. However, most of my files have been lost on it, reduced to some obscure format that I can't work with. Also, each time I put it in, I get this message asking me if I want to scan and fix errors on the flash drive. Selecting "more options" reveals that, apparently, it's not a Windows XP drive.

What is going wrong? Is there some way to just re-format the entire zip drive and start from scratch?

EDIT: I put this in the wrong forum. Can a mod please move it to the WinVista forum?

I have had an EZ Flash drive (memory stick) for just over a year which has suddenly stopped working. Normally, my computer sees it as soon as I plug it into the USB, but now it doesn't.
For a while I did get the computer to acknowledge that it was there as a removable drive, but it couldn't detect anything on it.
I've tried re-installing it using the installation disk, but to no avail.
Could it have become totally de-activated or wiped?
Even if all the files on it have been wioed, I can't see why it can't be detected.
I've checked the USB ports in Control Panel and they're all OK.

Ok, so I've been preparing to transfer over my files to a new laptop, by first saving the important stuff to a flash drive. Took about an hour or so to copy everything over.

I pop the flash drive into the gf's computer to test it, and nothing is loading up correctly. I go to open up a MSword document, and it wont load up the text, I try to open a picture and it says "no preview available". Also, when going to open a folder I had moved to the flash drive, its apparently empty now. What the hell is up with this thing? It's just a simple 32gb flash drive, nothing special or complicated. Yet it's not working.

I just purchased a new Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop, and while it's mostly gone swimmingly, I've had one problem with it: the machine fails to fully recognize my flash drive.

What is unusual is that it will immediatley recognize my brother's flash drive, which is the exact same manufacturer, model, and capacity.

When I go to Computer Management, the drive shows up as active, and the driver (the drive-specific one, not the UMS driver) can populate and get the USB drive's info... but it never shows up in Explorer, and I can't get any data off it.

Any ideas? If it makes any difference, the machine originally crashed as it was installing drivers for this drive.

Answer:Specific flash drive not working?

Has the drive been given a drive letter? You may need to assign it one via Disk Management. To do so, open Disk Management:
Start > Control Panel > System & Security > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
Now click on the drive in question. Right click and click Change drive letter and paths.

If not, you can attempt to use it via another computer. If it's broken there as well, it may be shot.

This is more of a comment rather than a question but replies are welcome.  I installed Windows 7 RC on a Compaq d530 CMT computer about 8 days ago.  Yesterday is when I first tried using flash drive with it.  Win 7 displayed a message saying a valid driver was not available and displayed a yellow triangle in Device Manager in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section.  I deleted the device in Device Manager, restarted, tried the flash drive again, and got the same response.Today, I tried a flash drive again and Win 7 accepted it as normal.  I have no idea why Win 7 changed it mind.

I got this problem with my computer
Whenever I use a USB flash drive the files get corrupted
the same flash drive when used on another computer works fine as long as the files don't come from my computer
the DVD drives don't read or burn disks (both CD and DVD)
and the computer is working REALLY slow
it even takes about 7 minutes to boot up
can someone help me?

I suppose there probably are some bad sectors or delays on your hard drive. You can use HDD Regenerator to check if bad sector or delays happen on your hard drive. If you unfortunately find some, you still can repair the bad sectors or delays with HDD Regenerator. Well, scan the hard disk first.

Hi, guys, I'm the newbie from the Philippines. I'm really worried about my USB Flash Drive. I've had it for 5 months now, and I use it on a lot of computers, whether they're Windows 2000/XP, and it always worked well.

Just 2 hours ago, I plugged it into one computer and it worked well. But a few minutes afterwards, when I plugged it into another computer, it wouldn't light up. I plugged it into other computers, including mine, afterwards, and none of the computers read it.

My roommate's USB Flash Drive, however, worked in the computers I plugged my flash drive in.

Does this indicate that I'd have to buy another USB Flash Drive? Is this the work of a virus or just plain stupidity in my part?

Please help me.

Well, I'll try to give you as much info as possible.. I have an old mp3 player which I now only use as a 64 meg flash drive. It' called the Creative MuVo. Lately, I haven't been able to access the "removable disk" under my computer. When I plug it in, it seems to recognize that SOMETHING has been plugged into it (my pc), but it either gives me three beeps then does nothing and shows nothing, or gives me the found new hardware: stmp3410. Then it tries to auto download somthing, then, doesnt seem to find anything. This has never happened before. Is my flash drive broken? Or is there something Im now doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Flash drive not working properly? stmp3410

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you need to update usb drivers for your motherboard, or maybe It came with drivers itself(I doubt it) that need to be updated. Other than that, this is the best advice I can give.

I have an older Dell Dimension 4700 computer that presently is running Windows XP Professional.
This computer did not have a sound card in it when I received it so I installed a flash drive sound stick and it has been working fine with my old beastly large 18" CRT monitor with seperate twin speakers. The sound was not that great, but it worked good enough to satisfy my very ocassional need for sound.
I just recently got rid of the CRT beast and hooked up a much nicer 19" Planar PX1910M flat screen monitor that my brother gave me.  The Planar unit has integrated speakers built into the base of the monitor. I connected the sound cable to the monitor and plugged it into my USB sound stick.
I turned on the computer and switched on the monitor. I noticed the flash drive sound stick was illuminated and I did hear an audio signal tone indicating that the computer had booted up.
The monitor worked beautifully and I spent some time just browsing screens and admiring the wonderful graphics this monitor has compared to my old CRT monitor.
However, when I came to a U-tube video that I wanted to view I noticed that I had no sound at all. I went to the back of the computer to check connections and I noticed the flash drive sound stick was no longer illuminated. I then shut down the entire system...removed and reinstalled the sound stick....rebooted the system and again the sound stick was illuminated....the boot up tone sound was agai... Read more

I have a 32GB USB 3.0 pqi flash drive and it used to work on USB 2.0 ports just fine. I don't know why but it suddenly decided to stop working on USB 2.0 ports (still works on USB 3.0).

USB 3.0 port is not faulty.
USB 2.0 port is not faulty.

How do I get it to work with USB 2.0 again?

Answer:USB 3.0 pqi flash drive suddenly stopped working on USB 2.0 ports

I would copy the data off and store it someplace if possible. I would take USB 2.0 not working as a warning something may be breaking down in the drive. It might only effect USB 2.0 but it's difficult to be sure.

I'm not a hardware guy so I'm not sure if you can test them with a multi-meter.

Just picked up a Corsair Voyager GT 16GB USB 3.0

Plugged it into USB 3.0 port, my Intel Win8 PC did not like it, just said there was a problem with the device. Managed to solve the problem on Intel Win8 pc by installing some Renesas USB3.0 drivers.

However, I have the same issue on my new AMD build (see sig) also using Win8 64bit too. The renesas drivers do not work as that motherboard does not use renesas usb 3 controller. I tried one or two others as well, including an old Win7 one for AMD boards with no luck.

Have flashed the BIOS to latest version, and installed latest drivers and firmware for it - well kind of, you have to run the Setup.exe for the Gigabyte F2X85A motherboard in Windows 7 compatibility mode, if I try and run normally, it says O/S not supported!

Very shoddy Win8 support for some chipset and USB drivers. But if anyone can find a solution i'd be VERY happy.

My friend just gave me a 4gb kingston USB flash drive cause he dont use it anymore , so i thought i could use a little extra for readyboost. But when i first touch it , my antivirus software says it has 3 viruses inside , so i format it , and it was formatted as FAT32 , but i ... im not sure what was in my head at that time , but anyhow i choosed to format it as NTFS , then it suddenly just ... stop , i tried anything , it always show me that "the disk is write protected" , so i changed the registry , try format it anyhow , i couldnt do anything to it. Untill i came up with "attack the enemy when they least expect it" , so i unplug it , plug it in , format it to fat32 right when it shows up on the my computer screen , and it worked! then i set it as "dedicate this device for readyboost" and turn off the PC , now i turned the PC on and its write protected again ... idk what to do , or what to explain , is it because this thing is too old to be formatted as NTFS or its because the virus still exist and its eating my PC slowly i dont even know , or its just the flash drive is already broken ? somebody help please ...

Now just do this. Let us examine what is inside that pen drive - if possible.

Run WinRAR- your bit version - , after plugging in the pen drive keeping Shift key pressed to prevent autorun. Navigate to the pen drive and a screenshot of what you see inside.

Hello There,

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-11F laptop. It comes with 2 USB ports.
I have an older 1GB pendrive and just recently purchased a Maxell 16GB pendrive.
The pendrive works flawless at work, desktop pc but does not seem to work with the laptop.

I managed to use it only once, since then the laptop USB port simply does not recognize it.
I can tell it as the red led is not flashing and the pendrive can not be accessed.
I tried using the supplied Toshiba USB hub, no luck either :(

The 2 USB ports are ok as I use mouse, digital camera with it.
So is the 16GB pendrive, it works perfectly using other machines. *desktop pcs*

Am I missing some USB drivers or whats the problem ?
Please help as I need to be able to use the unit on the laptop too.

Thank you!

Answer:16GB USB flash drive not working on Satellite L300-11F

Sounds like there is a bad USB driver installed that is causing a conflict.

Did you install any USB devices recently? Such as a Logitech mouse, Iomega storage device, or a printer/scanner?
Try uninstalling these USB devices and see how that goes.

The partition table of the disk is GPT.

Tried with Fast Boot enabled and disabled.
Tried with CSM enabled and disabled. Works with CSM enabled, but not in UEFI mode.

hello everyone, hope you guys can help me.
problem: im not able to view my files on my Sandisk 8gb flash drive. i plug it in, i hear the device sound, but nothing else happens. if i go into disk management the device is there, and i also see it properly installed in device manager. ive tried my plugging in my phone (have a ext. sd card) and a external hard drive and both work just fine. i plug this flash drive into my other windows 7 pc and it pops up instantly.
What ive tried to fix issue:
1. i removed the drivers and tried to reinstall. once i uninstall and reinstall the flash drive works perfectly the first time i plug it in , but then once i remove and plug it back, im back to square one
2. ive ran drivecleaner to completely remove EVERY usb driver install, no joy.
3. ive tried changing the drive letter, no go.
4. i formatted the flash drive twice in fat32 format
5. motherboard drivers are up to date, all windows updates installed
6. i ran virus/spyware/malware scan. nothing found
Any help would be greatly appreciated (seriously, i need this working!) . thank you in advance for your time and help.

Answer:USB Flash Drive not working in Windows 7 PC (But works in another Win7 Machine)

Do you have admin rights when you plug in your USB drive?  If not that can throw issues with windows.
Dont plug in your phone at all, reboot try the USB again.  Try taking it out and plug it in again.  Make sure your safely uninstall the USB drive, don't just rip it out.
Did you try all the USB ports?
Does the device show up in the device manager when it stops working?  If there is a yellow symbol near it go to scan disc website and see if there are drivers there for it.
Other things can be your phone, it can mess up USB drivers.  Look at the website of the phone for updates to drivers.
If all else fails you can download and reinstall your chipset and BIOS drivers.  A error could be causing it.  A refresh can fix it sometimes. (do a backup and restore with recovery disk before you do this just in case something happens).
good luck and let me know if you need anything else

In my PC (Windows 7 Professional - 32 Bit Operatins System - Service Pack 1 installed) whenever I plug in Flash Drive, the system creates short cut for all the folders in the Flash Drive. The folders and its contents are safe.

But I am unable to Safely Dismount the Flash Drive and the system on choosing Eject the Drive will display "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." message.

If I go through My Computer - Right Click on Flash Drive and then Eject the system shows the following message

"F: is Currently in Use. Save any Open Files on this disc, and then close the files or programs
using the files before trying again. If you choose to continue, the files will be closed, which might cause data to be lost.

Cancel Try Again Continue"

If we choose Continue, system displays "Safe to Remove Hardware".

I am having a laptop with same OS and there when I plug in the flash drive it does not create any short cut and no such problems.

Both the systems are having Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.671.4971 and are upto date on Virus Siglature update.

Which flash drive is the fastest to use with Vista's page file on flash drive capability?

Answer:What flash drive is the fastest to use w/ vista's flash drive page file caching?

No no no, wrong wrong wrong. Whoa there, sonny, let's back up a bit.

Before you go preaching it's like having your pagefile on a USB drive, you need to learn more about ReadyBoost, which is the correct name for the specific technology. It's not putting your pagefile on the USB Flash device, it's just using the Flash RAM device to augment (read: add to the performance) some aspects of Vista's SuperFetch and virtual memory subsystems.

There are several threads about this feature here already; search for "readyboost" and you can learn more about it, which I STRONGLY recommend since you're getting off on the wrong foot already.

No problem with you being enthusiastic since ReadyBoost is a great feature and a nice way to improve system performance, but you need to present your posts in an accurate and meaningful way with facts and not just a bunch of statements that sound like "OMG it's the greatest thing evarrrrr..."

You're close, but do some more research here and other places to get the real scoop about ReadyBoost.

Most any USB 2.0 Flash-RAM based device should work just fine, but the cheap ones - those $10 specials at stores - might not be up to snuff for transfer speeds. If you stick one in and Vista offers to let it be used for ReadyBoost, that means Vista tested it and concluded it's up to the task.

I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello masonta. Welcome to the forum.

Let's start with this: can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window, expanded so we can read everything, with the USB stick installed?

OK, maybe this was really stupid. I had a 32GB flash drive formatted with the Win10 media upgrade image on it (bootable). I was going to use it to upgrade another system but in the meantime I wanted to copy some programs between two systems. I inserted the flash drive into my previously installed Windows 10 laptop which was running flawlessly for 5 weeks and setup using the D: user profile setup (autorun move of profiles to D post install step).

So now after I inserted the flash drive it appeared like my current windows 10 system was trying to reinstall windows 10 again, I didn't realize anything would happen simply by plugging in the flash drive. So I aborted the "getting windows ready" but now I can login to the system but have an error dialog:

C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or Internet, and them try again. If the location still can't be found, it might be moved or deleted.

So when I open explorer and look in C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile I do not see a Desktop folder. I am guessing the install got to a certain point before I halted it and now some system files are gone. Damn I am so fuming over this, I assumed the flash drive insert would prompt before any action and I was just going to copy a couple of files to do an instal... Read more

Answer:Transferring data from 1 flash drive to another flash drive

There really isn't another way to copy them. They have to physically read from one device and write on another. Depending on size of files and how many, it can indeed take a while. The only thing that would speed up the process is if you had USB 3.0 drives. I assume you are using 2.0.

*Model: Satellite M40-237 (PSM40E)*

I decided to reinstall windows, my hard drive is currently formatted. So as usual, boot from Windows CD is needed to start instalation but it simply won't boot. I never had problems like this, boot always worked. It is like there is no bootable CD in the drive (but it is bootable and it is working on another PC).

- i have the latest BIOS
- BIOS detects optical drive and everything is ok, HDD is primary ODD is secondary
- i tried selecting boot priority with F12 and/or setting it from BIOS, but it won't work either way

What could be the problem here? Drive not working properly (i hope it is that and not something worse)? I had some problems with the drive i before (writing...), but it reads CD/DVD's normally and like i said boot was working fine before. I cleaned the lens a little, disconected it and put it back. Is there anything more i can do ?

I am trying to find someone who has the drive that fits so i can try with that one, but who knows when will that be.

Now, here is the second question i have related to this. Because my laptop is practically useless currently (i can't install anything), is it possible to boot from:
a) external USB optical drive
b) USB flash drive

Bios on this laptop has no USB boot option, it has HDD / CD / FDD / network. But I've red somewhere that FDD = USB if legacy emulation is enabled.

If that is correct i should just plug the USB drive and select FDD as boot option ? If i can't find U... Read more

Have you original recovery CDs? Have you tried to use them for OS installation?
Power up your notebook with installations CD in ODD and press C button several times. It should force ODD to be first bootable device. Please post the result.

As far as I know if you want to use external USB ODD you need DOS driver for it. The drive will not be recognized automatically. two weeks ago i was bought a Fujitsu B series lifebook computer.About 5 days ago I had got that virus stating I had a "processor running at 83 degrees", "hard drive clusters are partly damaged", "must scan to fix this issue", yatta yatta yatta and some other classic virus jive talk i cant remember at this moment. At first it kept bothering me about the scan, then it started popping up 57 windows in short succesion, then i couldnt access my other files, then my desk top went black and was reduced to 4 icons, start menu was obliterated.try combo fix, trend micro, some other reliable programs but i would either down load them and they'd disappear or in the case of combofix it would load then exit out quickly. It reached a point were i just couldn't boot my computer up anymore.NTLDR was missing it said. I am not sure if that virus deleted it or if the computer and its hd were just old and wore out. It was from the flea market.. I cant get past that error msg, there is no flash drive boot up option on this old thing, i have no floppy drive with it, it has no cd rom drive, ive heard the external usb cd rom drive cant be used to boot it up but im not 100 percent sure.Someone else with the same notebook reported that it would not allow usb cd rom drive boot up. I have been told network boot is an option but i was told thats just to access it after its turned on and its not what i think its for. I was told an hd switch was a good option but i dont... Sorry I am a computer novice; but, I am running out of hard drive C space and I thought maybe I could put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive in order to free up drive C space.

If this is possible, can you refer me to some instructions on how to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Can you put Recovery Drive D on a flash drive to free up hard drive

To be honest a recovery drive won't give you much space (10 GB or so?). You are better off with a USB external HDD and move your less accessed data to the external.

I wonder what others will say.

Subject: cloned a 80G HDD to a 128G USB Flash stick

hi all,

happy holidays, etc.

this is an old issue, yet i am still working on it

in July 2013; I cloned my 80G HDD onto a 128G USB Flash stick

in Sept. 2013; I had a data loss...

so, I thought to recover my data using this 128G clone...

I put this 128G Flash stick into my computer, and it showed up as a Local drive, yet was inaccessible and with its LED flashing incessantly...
{this was after, I treated this 128G USB flash stick as if it were a whole computer, and I then attempted to use/misused Win Vista's EasyTransfer program in a failed attempt to restore my lost data :(}

I later ran CHKDSK /f /r on it, and Chkdsk repaired and/or deleted about 7 "attributes" files

after which, this 128G Flash, only shows up as a Removable Storage(not Local) drive.. and remains locked/data inaccessible yet without the flashing LED

the USB drive, when I clicked on it in My Computer, would give the/an error message "Insert drive into H: drive"... Insert? a drive? into my tiny USB drive? which isn't even a CD or DVD drive? ... I tried all the fre... Read more

We recently purchased 10 Dell Optiplex 5040 desktops.   On one of them I built a Windows 7 32 bit configuration.  I wished to capture an image of it using Ghost and save it on an external drive.  The USB stick that I used has been used successfully many times on a variety of machines.
When I boot from this USB it boots successfully to X:\Windows\System32 and then I can navigate to D: as the local drive.  When I try to navigate to E: the message is “the device is not ready”.   When I try to navigate to F: the message is “the system cannot find the drive specified”.
I have tried using all of the USB ports on the machine with the same result.
When the machine is booted into Windows it does recognize and read the USB stick.  The disk administrator identifies it as 'healthy' with an active partition. The file format of the USB and the machine being imaged is NTFS.
I had downloaded all of the drivers for this computer using the Dell website’s Dell Detect program.  The BIOS settings are the default settings.
I have tested this on the other new Dell Optiplex 5040 desktops right out of the box with exactly the same result.
All of the DELL diagnostic tests have normal results – whether run from the machine itself or the Dell website.
Are there any known problems/fixes that apply to this situation?

I have an issue, I have not have before. I am running XP pro SP3 with all updates installed. I use AVG free for everyday protection, with a router configured as a firewall, as well as the standard Win firewall. I also use Windows Defender, Windows malicious software removal too, I was using LiveOne Care, but it no longer exists. I also use Malwarebytes free version regularly and RUBotted.

So here is the issue. I was at a work conference and took my flash drive to transfer my presentation to the laptop that is used for the projector in auditorium. Got it back, threw it in my purse and never thought anything more about it. Today I started to transfer another presentation to the flash drive and wala, AVG pops up with "threat detected, move files to virus vault?" The message initially said: Recycler.exe. So of course I click yes to transfer to virus vault. It appears the file is in my virus vault. I then ran AVG on the flash drive and it came up with another virus CNN and sent it to the virus vault as well. I then ran malwarebytes, AVG, Windows Defender, as well as BitDefender online. I tried to use Kapersky as well, but it appears it is being updated and not available. All came up clean.

So, I am thinking the problem is taken care of. So I set up AVG to run on the flashdrive again on and it says "no infection found". But when I try to access the flash drive as usual, it said K:access denied (that is my USB drive). HMMMM now what? So I check the dri... Read more

My computer no longer recognizes the cd drive/burner on my dektop PC, and I think the problem is related to a removeable USB flash drive.

It's a really old Compaq Presario with an added cd burner(drive d now), and the original cd rom(drive e). My PNY usb flash drive installed some software(drivers I think) when I 1st ran it, and shows up as drive f.

Worked fine a couple of times, but then the lights went out on the cd burner(drive d), it would not open, and it didn't even show up on "My Computer" either.

Searched on internet awhile, and read something about a flash drive problem, so I removed the flash drive from the USB slot, restarted the computer, and both cd drives re-appeared, and worked fine, as long as I removed the flash drive, and turned computer off after burning cd. But I forgot, and left it on for several hours, and now even when I remove the flash drive, and restart computer the 2 cd drives don't show up on "my computer". The cd rom(drive e) light comes on, and will open, but the burner(drive d) light is off, and will not open. Neither drive registers on "My Computer". The flash drive still reads as drive f, even with no drive d, or e.(lol)

Suggestions anyone?
Thanks in advance.

I have a USB flash drive that the Media Creation Tool messed up when it was formatting it to create installation media.
Ive worked out how to fix the flash drive. I just have to use disk management to create a new simple volume on it, I then have no option but to assign the flash drive with a drive letter, and format it to Fat32 and the flash drive is recognised again in windows.
The question I have is. It appears that the drive letter I give it then becomes a static drive letter.
I don't really want it to be static. Id rather put it back to the way it was when I bought the USB flash drive so that Windows assigns the drive letter dynamically every time its inserted into the PC. Is there a way of doing this or When you create a new simple volume does the drive letter have to be static?
My PC only has Drive C: (operating system and D: (DVD drive). The removable USB flash drive when inserted has always been Drive E: I have a few flash drives that I use and Id like windows to just assign them all dynamically if its possible. Ive never had this issue before...its just this one USB drive that the Media Creation Tool messed up..the others are fine. I just want to put this USB back to its it was when I purchased it if possible

my new motherboard came capable of booting up from a USB flash drive/cdrom/HDD etc...

my last one apparently also had it but it was kinda half ***** still so i left the floppy there.

so does the flash drive finally replacing floppy disk drive as far as features and being acessible and bootable in bios and dos?

i got a gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3L motherboard and treres an option in the boot menu for flashdrive.

i had to use the floppy to recover from my system not booting up into windows in the past and dont want to get stuck without any access to the system if something happends.

and also i made a customized image of my windows disk with latest graphic drivers and all the rest of them using NLITE.

but could not figure out how to make a bootable flashdrive.
i just extracted the image to flash drive and it wouldnt boot.

i went around google for a lil bit and found few different methods of doing it.

can anyoen suggest which method os the easiest and most reliable out of them?

Answer:can we finally get rid of floppy drive? making a windows install flash drive

After being attacked by several Trojans a couple of nights ago (which I mentioned in another thread), my security and personal information may be compromised as I speak, and it looks likely that I'll have format and re-install Windows XP on my laptop for the first time. This is my first time doing so for this CLEVO D900T, which is from circa-2005 and a hand-me-down from a family member. The thing is, I'm reading in this laptop's manual that in order to re-install WIndows XP, I'll be needing a USB floppy disk drive to install what appears to the drivers for the laptop's SATA drive. Thing is, I wasn't given a USB floppy drive by my family member, thus I don't have one. I was wondering, could I instead use a flash drive or flash memory (i.e microSD card) via the laptop's card reader to load the drivers? I'm not sure if in this case it'd be best if I just re-install or format and re-install.

Also, I'm trying to make it easier for me to get my laptop back to the way it is when and if I re-install. Is there any way I can get a list of all of the programs I have installed on my PC right now, or possibly carry over all of my programs and settings for the next install? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Laptop needs USB floppy drive to reinstall Win XP, can I use flash drive/memory instead?

Well, you are going to have problems... Sorry to say...

First off, most PCs with SATA drives will have an option in the BIOS to place it in IDE mode. This assures that Windows Setup will be able to detect it as a drive with the ability to be installed to.

As for USB drives, it all depends on your BIOS version and manufacturer. Toshiba for example, does not support ANY usb device unless it is made by their company. It sucks, yes, but i guess for more money for crappy products.

You can install the drivers to a flash drive, but you will also have to make a bootable image to that drive, and load your windows setup files, manually format and partition the drive, copy the files over, then start the setup process to do that. It is a huge hassle that I had to deal with on a Toshiba Portege 3500.

Backing up is a bit easier. You can use the built in windows backup software (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools> Backup) and make a complete backup to an external drive to restore after format. The problem is YOU WILL ALSO TRANSFER THE VIRUSES YOU HAVE!!!

If you use the file and settings transfer wizard, you can transfer most of your stuff, but you WILL HAVE TO REINSTALL A LOT OF YOUR SOFTWARE, as it will not transfer your registry entries.
Your best bet is to get an Antivirus/spyware removal tool (Such as and an anti MAlware software (such as Malwayebytes). This will clear most of your infections, and gives you more time ... Read more

I have read the related thread from earlier this month (370606 - External USB Hard Drive Not Recognized) and wonder if anyone can help with my issue.

I am also curious what everyone thinks of the end of that thread regarding a better cable - Maxtor tech. support did not confirm that story for me? Is that in fact a better cable than what Maxtor ships with their drives?

I have a 1 month old Dell, 4 month old external hard drive, and 8 month old flash memory. All work separately. However, when I have the external hard drive plugged in and working, and then plug in the flash memory it will not be recognized. If I have the flash memory plugged in and working, and then plug in the external hard drive it will not be recognized. The only difference is that in the first case the external hard drive will continue to be readable by XP, while in the second case XP doesn't lose touch with the flash memory but it will show it (incorrectly) as empty.

Both externals and all ports are USB 2.0.

The flash drive is assigned to E. The external had been assigned to E as well, but I have now changed it to P. I am on a network so F through O are taken.

The PC is a standard university issue (Pentium 4, quite a bit of memory and capabilities, but nothing excessive).

The external drive is a Maxtor Personal Series 3100 80Gb USB 1.1/2.0.

The flash memory is a 64 Mb. Dell Memory Key.

I had an 80GB Seagate IDE hard drive in my Dell Dimension 2400 that was clearly dying. I have been using a boot CD to connect to the Internet for days now. I have replaced the old hard drive with an unused 250GB WD IDE drive and with difficulty gotten the computer to recognize it. I intended to boot to flash drive and use the boot CD to execute the transfer of an image of the old Seagate drive from its location on my external hard drive to the new internal hard drive. But the computer will only boot to flash drive when the new internal hard drive is removed. When the drive is in and I click Enter on "6. USB Flash Drive", I get the ""Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" message over and over.

When I take the hard drive out, I can boot into flash drive again. I have A05 BIOS, and it appears to me from the Dell website that is as far as I can go.

How can I start booting into flash drive with my new hard drive in place, just as I did with my old hard drive in place?

I have a similar problem to a question asked in 2011- mine is on an Acer Veriton without optical drive. So I followed the advice there and changed the SATA BIOS from AHCI to Native IDE. The result of that was that I never go as far as the select partition screen - just the BSOD!I reset the BIOS and got the same result. So now I can't get anything to work on installing XP - yuck! The BSOD gave advice to use CHKDSK /f but as I don't have anything yet installed, I have no way of doing it. Now I have an unusable PC, thanks to WinToFlash.Tony
