Preferred Solution: Find article about MMX technology in processor

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I thought posting this link to a BBC article I saw this morning was appropriate here. I well remember "IBM 80 column card" input-output while using an IBM 1620 computer in the mid-1960s. The computer was designed for technical applications, but where I worked it was also employed for business applications.

Answer:Solved: Article re HDD history and technology - FYI

I worked for IBM in the mid 60's, and I saw more 80 column cards than I care to ever see again! However, did you ever see the 96 column mini-cards?

I still remember paying $500 for a well used 8" hard disk with a massive 20 mb of capacity. That was in 1978, and I still had to build my own disk controller to connect it to my CP/M 8080 based machine. I thought my rig was the Cat's Meow at the time.

I have searched and searched the forum but I can't find an arctile that someone here posted a link to a few days ago. The article was about RAM and compared how different manufacturers use diferent chips or parts or something (I can't really remeber, that's why I'm looking for the article) and the preformance gains that it gave. I thought Nubius posted it, but I did a search of the threads he's posted in (damn dude you post alot) and I couldn't find it; although, I will admit I didn't read ALL of them. Umm if someone knows what the hell I'm talking about please help me out by posting a link to the thread or telling me what it is or something. This kind of crap really drives me crazy so for the sake of my sanity please help. I have tried searching for it but apparntly I'm retarded and don't know what the hell to search for.

Please,

Help.

I have been looking all over merijn.org for an article about using a mini version of Linux OS simultaneously with windows to block viruses. The Linux OS is used as a filter while browsing the internet That way if you get a virus it is on the Linux OS and you can just delete Linux and reload it.

Does this sound familiar? Have you also seen this article?

It sounded like it would effectively block 99.9% of the viruses that would otherwise get on your computer. I do not know what to do now because I cannot find it.

IBM researchers announced that they have found a way to extend a key chip-manufacturing process to generate smaller chip circuits, potentially postponing the semiconductor industry's high-risk conversion to an extremely expensive alternative.

IBM scientists created the smallest, high-quality line patterns ever made using deep-ultraviolet (DUV, 193 nm) optical lithography, a technology currently used to essentially "print" circuits on chips. The distinct and uniformly spaced ridges are 29.9 nm wide. This is less than one-third the size of the 90-nanometer features now in mass production and below the 32 nanometers that industry consensus held as the limit for optical lithography techniques.

The semiconductor industry has so far relied on continually shrinking circuits to drive increases in the performance and function of chips and the products that use them. But as chip features approach the fundamental scale limits of individual atoms and molecules, this method cannot continue in the future for very long. IBM's new result indicates that a "high-index immersion" variant of DUV lithography may buy the industry time.

"Our goal is to push optical lithography as far as we can so the industry does not have to move to any expensive alternatives until absolutely necessary," said Dr. Robert D. Allen, manager of lithography materials at IBM's Almaden Research Center. "This result is the strongest evidence to date that the industry may have at... Read more

Answer:29.9 nm Processor Technology!

Well WOOPTIE-FREAKIN'-DOO!!!!!!!

I'VE BEEN WAITING MY ENTIRE LIFE FOR THIS MOMENT!!!!!!

But really, thats cool. when will these reach the consumer? Probably not for very long considering that were at 90nm now and 65nm is just around the corner.

BTW, "We believe that high-index liquid imaging will enable the extension of today's optical lithography through the 45- and 32-nm technology nodes," translates into BLAH BLAH BLAH for me. lol

Hey guys...

I have googled it using many, many terms, but am unable to find an article which outlines the reasons why ram optimizers at best do nothing, and at worst they can make performance worse. It was on the [H] front page a while back, but no search through the archives pulls anything up (broken?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys.

Answer:Can't find article re: Ram optimizers doing more harm than good

All I can say is by running ram optimizers, you're taking up ram, so in turn some of your ram is being used.
I see you have 1gig of ram, so you won't need it

Answer:Windows XP cannot find msconfig so Hattersley article no help

There are some other programs the likes of C Cleaner I believe or WinPatrol to mention a couple which you can use to stop programs running at start up.
If you have the proper XP CD you could run sfc /scannow and see if it finds any problems.

Hi everyone,

I run Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I'm working on resolving CHKDSK problems such as (there are others):

"The object id index entry in file 0x19 points to file 0x3d4 but the file has no object id in it. Deleting an index entry from index $O of file 25." and "CHKDSK is scanning unindexed files for reconnect to their original directory. Recovering orphaned file Chkdsk20141115054950.log (58521) into directory file 17."

I found a hotfix download on [email protected] by referral from the Microsoft webpage https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2641222, "An update is available that enables the Chkdsk.exe utility to repair a corruption error on the system volume in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2".

This email says, "WARNING This hotfix has not undergone full testing. Therefore, it is intended only for systems or computers that are experiencing the exact problem that is described in the one or more Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that are listed in "KB Article Numbers" field in the table at the end of this e-mail message." Finally, at page bottom appears, "KB Article Number(s): 2641222".

My problem here is that I've not been able to locate KB 2641222. Can anyone help me here?

On a final note, has anyone had experience on W7 with applying this hotfix?

Kind regards,
RetiredEngineer

This article was kinda interesting; thanks to tomshardware.com
http://www.tomshardware.com/consumer...516/index.html

A few notables:

1.) "X-Fi uses what is called an Active Modal Architecture (AMA), allowing the user to choose among three application modes: games, leisure and creation. Its calculating power (X-Fi has a power of 10,340 MIPS, which is more powerful than a 3.6 GHz P4 processor, which has 10,224 MIPS) is then optimized for the chosen type of use. " -tomshardware.com

2.) "For gamers, the processing power (24 times that of the Audigy processor) will clearly transform the situation by offering speed, but also the capacity to manage a multitude of audio sources simultaneously in 3D with optimization for the speaker system. Creative's new EAX 5.0 should transform the sonic world for gamers - making it possible, for example, in multi-player situations, for a player to speak into the microphone and have his or her voice reproduced in conformity with the virtual acoustical environment where the player is."

That is pretty sweet. Thats hilarious, more MIPS than a 3.6GHz!!!!

I have a 2yr old t61 with the Windows XP downgrade from Vista, with 2.46ghz intel core 2 duo processor. I got some software that is 64 bit, but am not sure how to determine if it is compatible with my machine. If it isn't, is this something I can upgrade?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:How do I find out what my bit processor is?

To run a 64 program you need a 64 bit OS so you cannot run a 64 application under a 32 bits version of Windows. Also your T61 can run a 64 bit version of Windows so Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 should work fine. It should also work fine with a 64 bit version of Windows XP, but since Lenovo do not provide drivers for the 64 bit version of XP i wouldn't recommend to do so. In that case you might find it to be a challenge finding all the drivers. So the answer is yes your machine support 64 bit, but need a 64 bit OS to run 64 bit applications. By the way seems like you entered your email address in the location field so you might want to change your profile so the location contains your location instead of the mail address. -gan

I traded a digital camera I had for a MSI K7N2 Delta2 Board and a CPU, I have no idea how much the board goes for. But I think the CPU he said was a AMD Athlon XP3500+ Barton Core. Hello, I'm not very good with computers so bare with me please :).

I am a university student and today when I went to open my class notes in Microsoft Works Word Processor I found nothing but a blank page. The file was still there, with the exact same name, but all the text was gone. The document contained 15 hours of lecture notes needed for an exam in 6 days, so I'm naturally pretty anxious for help. I have since turned my computer on and off. I have tried converting the file to rich text format and back, to no avail. The size of the document says a mere 16 kb now as well.

I opened the seemingly blank document with notepad, and found a bunch of jargon along with 2 interesting clues. One was very small pieces of my class notes here and there, in between the coding and jargon. The second was towards the end of the coding, where it said various random things about my HP printer. I did perform a printer test today, and was wondering if that did anything to delete or corrupt my notes.

I performed a system reset back to 5 PM (the file appeared blank at 6 PM, when it said it was last modified). The file is still blank. I have also checked through the recycle bin, nothing.

These notes are very important to me and my grade in this class. I have backed up material from 3 weeks ago, but with 3 hour classes i would still be missing a lot of material >_<. Any help is much appreciated, thank you very much.

Heya,
I just bought a new Motherboard, RAM and processor (upgraded from 1.6ghz to 3.3 ghz and 2gb ram to 8gb).
When I first started my computer after this it kept going to a repair windows screen, so I hit the forums on my laptop (like I'm doing this now.) and someone suggested to do a clean install of windows 7.
So I did and hoooooray it worked, but then I couldn't get connected to the internet. The problem seems to be that I don't have the correct network adapter driver installed.
I'm not that clued up on computer so I've no idea what this relates to.
So any help anyone could give me would be very grand,

My computer details are as follows (I'll try to include what I think is needed, So I may include things not needed or leave out things that are. If I do just ask for them).

O.S: Windows 7 ultimate, 32 bit
Processor: AMD FX-6100 6 core processor
4GB ram
Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS with 1gb memory.
ASUS M5A97 Motherboard
Sky router (sorry no more detaisl than that can't see a model or anything else on it).
I know the internet still work and that's it's not the ethernet cable because I can't still can connect to the internet on my laptop.
Anyway hope you can help and thank you in advance for all efforts.

Mac

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 that I traded for today. I washed the keyboard clean of all the dried, gummy CocaCola that was in it and it works fine now. It has a 2.0-GHz Celeron processor. I don't think much of Celerons and I have an unused 3.0-GHz Pentium 4, socket 478 gathering dust here.

I haven't found anything at Dell's site or in a Google search that tells me for absolutely certain whether this is a socket-478 system and whether it is replacable. So far, it seems replacable; but, I need to know the socket type. I don't want to disassemble this thing just to find out the processor I have will not fit.

Wikipedia (ASLR) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_space_layout_randomization
"ASLR is a computer technique involved in protection from buffer overflow attacks..."

Developers/Programmers can add these mitigation technologies into their software, but most haven't (my assumption based on the existence of EMET by Microsoft). This is why some users have EMET installed, however it may break some software functionality. However, I believe EMET has a pre-configured list (ie. Skype, Office etc.) to offer maximum compatibility.

You can enable DEP within Windows, without the need for additional software.
Computer > System Properties > Advanced > Data Execution Prevention. By default, it's set as "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only". But you can also choose the option below, which with turn on DEP for all programs/services.

Find out more about EMET - http://www.microsoft.com/emet
** EMET 5.0 supports Vista SP2 and higher.

Question: article.chm

I have a teen=age pc! COMPAQ PRESARIO circa 2000. I installed a new hard drive & was loading my xp home addition. 45% of files were loaded when article.chm refused to load & I was given the following options-to retry to load article.chm hit Enter -to continue without loading article.chm(in which case xp might not work properly) hit Esc -to stop installation hit F3. After several retrials & removing my disk & cleaning as well as I could (it was in bad shape when the computer tech sent it to me after charging me $75 dollars to install xp home addition on my orgional hard drive) I opted for F3 at least until I could find out what article.chm is & if it is necessary to the operation of my pc! Then the mssg. NTLDR Is Missing appeared upon my screen when I tried to shut down pc. Is NTLDR in the last 55% of my installation disk & how detrimental is article.chm to my os xp home addition? I'm 53 & never touched a keyboard let alone a computer until 2009! It's been fun & kept me entertained as I am now physically disabled! Please help.

Microsoft is asking its testers what they want to see in the next version of Internet Explorer. The company notes it is currently in the research phase of the development of IE9.
With Internet Explorer 8 out for almost two months now, Microsoft has decided to ask the testers in the now closed Internet Explorer 8 Technical Beta program to start giving suggestions for the next version. IE9 is currently in the research phase, though I'm sure some early builds have already been compiled. This week, the software giant sent an e-mail to its testers with the following information:
So far, there are only 10 suggestions made on the Microsoft Connect IE page:
* IE needs a new JavaScript Engine for better performance
* Download manager with pause/resume and DL listing
* Improvement in the way IE Favorites are saved to the way I have them saved them and have them placed in IE but not the the defaulted mode of being placed Alphabetically
* Build IE 9 with WPF
* Adding a downloader program to download files and programs like firefox and not using a third party tool
* Built-in spell checker !
* Tab drag & drop between windows
* Open Feed in a new Tab option
* Bookmark Anywhere On Web Page
* Support for built in gadgets
Given the amount of flak that Microsoft receives for Internet Explorer, I'm pretty sure these 10 suggestions cannot possibly summarize everything that the company needs to work on. If you were in the beta, go ahead and start making suggestions. If you wer... Read more

Answer:Interesting AV article

Interesting but his comment about Admin accounts is strange. He wrote

“Second, run Windows as a standard user, not as an administrator. (MacOS and Linux users already do this.) Running as a standard user may eliminate 90% of threats.”

Since even Admin user accounts are initially logged in using Standard level user tokens rather than Admin level user tokens, how can it make any difference? Surely his comment only applies to network admin accounts as they can routinely be set up to run with their Admin tokens.

MS removed their warnings about running in Admin accounts in June 2013.

App tests for Win XP SP2 burden users
Most delay installing XP security update

News Story by Carol Sliwa

AUGUST 30, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Microsoft Corp.'s Service Pack 2 is an important security-focused update for corporate users running Windows XP. But in the three weeks since its release, it's been a tough pill for many to swallow, as they struggle to test tens, hundreds and, in some cases, at least 1,000 applications against it.

Only two of 32 IT managers who responded last week to a Computerworld survey conducted via e-mail and telephone said their companies had deployed SP2, and in both cases they did so as part of Microsoft early-adopter programs. The majority said they're still testing SP2 to determine its compatibility with the applications their companies run.

"As we get closer to the holidays, we don't make changes of this significance because we don't want to disrupt our environment so close to our peak season," said Mike Jones, CIO at Circuit City Stores Inc. "While I'm happy to see that Microsoft has put out SP2 in response to known issues and weaknesses over time, it just doesn't work out timing-wise for us."

Jones said the Richmond, Va.-based retailer won't deploy SP2 until the first or second quarter of next year. And he was hardly alone in determining that the SP2 deployment will have to wait at least four mont... Read more

What makes this really fascinating and mind blowing is the fact that it is literally from the year of 1999 when we all though our computer systems would bring the end of civilized society. It talks about technology that we have today like smartphones, smartTVs, and tablets. What makes this so interesting is how it speaks of a PC+ era where the power of the desktop PC will be everywhere and accessible to everyone and will even be in tablet form and it ends to say that the PC+ era of tablets will be the future of Microsoft...very fascinating how the article parallels perfectly with today. I honestly couldn't believe it was from 1999 because it sounded too modern and too much what Windows 8 is like.

It made me laugh a little because it started out saying that the ritual of the "PC is dead" is going on again that that fewer PCs might be shipped globally.

Tisk, tisk tisk. Maybe this can help some of you folks with problems.

Looks like Microsoft really messed up this time with informing users one whats going to happen. A lot of programs are now acting differently and it is concerning users and making them think that there is a problem. All that the users really have to do is unblock ports in the firewall. Who knows.

I found this older article looking for some details about what's new regarding Windows Telemetry in the freshly released "Creators Update":

5 Unintended Consequences of Windows 10 Upgradegate

Do you agree with it? Please detail in a comment.

I found it deeply disturbing. It's not the first one i found describing the same thing. I think many people fail to realise the importance of updating/upgrading software, especially the OS. But i also think MS fails to explain why, otherwise people could be more informed and these article could not be this popular.

Or people react like this as a consequence of reading this exact type of articles, without even considering to double check what's brainwashing and what is the reality?
Stuff can be disabled in many software if you don't like it, like Windows Telemetry, or can be customized...

Answer:Do you agree with this article?

Most people are sheeps; they read an article and follow it without even thinking about the bigger picture. Not saying MS hating is trendy. Most haters i talked with have no clues about Windows, they just repeat what they heard...once i told them the other side of the story , they can't say anything...

Windows is far from perfect but if you care to learn it , you will find most of the issues are obsolete.

I did read the sticky, infact I bought the DGL4500 based on the information presented there (in 2007/2008). No fault of the sticky or to [H] but the DGL4500 turned out to be a heavy weight in hardware and quite the paperweight in firmware. I am still on the original firmware of 1.02 (lucky for me).

Looking to upgrade the D-Link and those above routers are the only ones I am looking at. Are there new versions of those routers coming out?

Yea, losta questions, basically which one is bestter? Yes, that is a new word, now.

What !!!!!!!! I just lost all respect for the author right there. The massive number of computer geeks, or "leets" are PC users. They are the ones who build your computer, code your software, and push the trend of the hardware and software industry.

Answer:This article really got it wrong

What marketers refer to them as and reality are two different things. A lot of Apple fans do buy the latest trendy stuff out on the market. So that much at least is prolly true. That these trendy people also prolly influence the sheep to do similar is also prolly true. The fact that the majority of the "trendy elite" are, in many cases, actually computer illiterate does not change the perception that they are l33t computing g0d$. The people that frequent this place already know better than that.
However, from a marketing guru's standpoint, what was said in the article regarding what you quoted is quite reasonable. It is all about perception to the marketing dept.

Question: Firewall Article

I just read this article on Firewall appliances. I found it pretty interested and written well. Thought others would feel the same.

http://loop.interop.com/comments.php?id=226_0_1_0_C

Answer:Firewall Article

That entire article was rather "meh" if you ask me. No offense, but besides a page of rhetoric (which amounted to common-sense to those of us in the field anyway), what was the author's point? The whole thing read like a memo trying to convince PHBs to upgrade their firewall to the new wiz-bang offering from Widgets, Inc.

Something that should be noted is that as firewalls seem to be looked at like they're the best thing since sliced bread and should be able to do everything to protect the network. While this may traditionally be the case at the perimeter (which is usually a packet filtering function), dumping your AV, URL filter, proxy server, and kitchen sink into one "firewall appliance" doesn't exactly sit well with those of us who don't like single points of failure. Merging security services in some regards make sense and sometimes has the benefit of a synergistic affect, but to put all your eggs in one basket is irresponsible at best, regardless of whether or not there are devices out there that allow you to do it. Bottom line: I feel that security engineers need to exercise restraint when these products are waved in their face. One must take careful consideration of whether or not to use an all-in-one device like the 3G firewalls the author speaks of due to the inherent reliablity liablity they present to network services should they ever fail, or be disrupted in some manner. And remember, in the real world failure is not ... Read more

Hello. You really don't need to read the first two paragraphs. They're just there for background information, and should have no effect on your answer.

I recently told my computer that it could compress my main hard drive partition (C:; Win. XP Pro) to save space. Low and behold, I learn that you can't boot from compressed files. I get into the recovery console, decompress many of the files and I'm on my way...almost. I get to the boot manager for XP and Vista, and I cannot boot either one. For XP, it said that "ntldr" was missing; for Vista, "winstart.exe" (or something like that name) was missing. I give up and try to do a repair installation of Windows XP Professional.

Everything goes great through the DOS environment. Going quite well in the GUI part of the installation, until it gets to about 34 minutes left. The install just stalls.

I was led to an article ( Windows XP SP1 Installation Stops Responding with About 34 Minutes Remaining) which describes my problem exactly. It led me to this article, which makes absolutely no sense to me.

If you would, please make some sense of that article. I'm somewhat computer literate (as you can see...I've gotten this far haven't I?), but that article makes me want just stab Microsoft a few times. =]

Answer:Need help understanding article

Firstly, how old is the PC/XP Install Disc and are you sure its a SP1 disc, because if its not then there could be other reasons for the install to fail.

If your XP Disc is SP1 then you have two option

1) If you know of someone that has an XP SP2 CD you could borrow their's, as long as both your CD and theirs are retail discs, because it wont work with OEM discs.

2)Slipstreaming - All Slipstream really involves is creating a new XP Boot CD that is SP2 rather than SP1 that your CD is now - all you need is a working PC with a CD-RW drive, a Blank CD and some software.

You can download SP2 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

And this site gives a nice Step by Step tutorial on how to slipstream with Screenshots, much easier to follow than the Microsoft artical that you were linked to:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

Once you've done that you should be able to install XP without any problem.

Another article on telemetry. Interested to read the opinion of the more experienced forum members and the opinion of the three tools mentioned. (Spybot Antibeacon, O&O Shutup, Wireshark) Credible idea or too much tin foil ?

If you ask me whether I'm worried about using Windows 10, my answer would be "no." I have dozens of Windows 10 installations here and I'm not in the least bit worried.

But despite such reassurances, there are a lot of people who are concerned by this, and the fact that Microsoft isn't willing to give concerned users an official way to opt out from data collection (which I think is a bad idea) is adding fuel to the flames. After all, as Bisson pointed out, we live in "justifiably paranoid times," where governments and social media sites are slurping up user data.

What's wrong with a little protection?

If you are worried about Windows 10 privacy, I suggest that you take matters into your own hands and install a tool that allows you to shut down all the different ways that your PC is communicating with Microsoft. Be aware though that doing this will result in some features no longer being available, since a number of Windows 10 features rely on having a connection to the cloud.
Be careful though. I've come across a number of "Windows 10 privacy tools" from unknown sources that do who knows what. Some tools actively display ads, and one even installs a third-party tool that displays ads ... Read more

Hi to all,

In one of yuor (many)articles, "NTFS or FAT32: Which Should I Choose?", reads ...( )

....You will also want to use FAT32 when you have multiple operating systems on one computer...

Is that ture?
I mean, I have Window 7 as a "main" OS on the PC, and because I am preparing myself for the CompTIA A+ I need and decided to install Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

Is a requeriment to have FAT32 as a file system, should I give up my folder security and somethings more?

Pleas, help on this.

Ricardo

Answer:About your NTFS ... article

If all your operating systems utilise NTFS, then there would be no call for FAT32, unless you wanted a FAT32 partition for research (eg examine the file storage system with a hex editor). If your multi-boot included any OS like Win9x/ME or Linux, then you either will need (Win) or may choose (Linux) to have at least one FAT32 partition.

Talking of which, and I did mention this elsewhere on the forum recently - it occured to me the other day that whatever you think about Vista, it seems to be stable.

I installed the Home Premium 32 bit version in January of this year and so far (touch wood) not one glitch at all, no BSOD's, no random reboots, no unexplained shutdowns.

Which is worth mentioning, imo

I just read this interesting article. It appears to explain why Windows is such a mess - and how it happens.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetma...al/default.aspxSynopsis: There's one approved way to call a function in Windows. But software programmers often use other methods - and this is what makes it so hard to keep Windows compatible with applications. In this example they used Mapped Network Drives. There's a function that will call the Map Network Drives that can be used to do this directly. But, the programmer decided to call the right click menu of Explorer to get it. And, instead of picking the name from the menu, they just picked the 3rd entry from the top. Then, they realized that it was different between WinXP and Win2K - so they added a version check to it. Then the user enables AutoPlay - and it bumps the item down - so they went back and defined it as the 5th item up from the bottom (rather than the 3rd item down from the top). Etc, etc, etc. Now, there's no way that Microsoft can know exactly what each programmer in the entire world has done (but they're trying with the different hardware and software certification programs that they use). Then along comes Vista with even more changes to the context menu. How can Microsoft be sure that this program will work with Vista? You may say that it's the programmer's problem - but it's not, it's the user of the program's problem. They're the one that will have to wait ... Read more

Trying to maintain backward compatibility, as well as interface new modules into an older framework of code, has been a major problem with MS. To be fair, it is a monumental task given the economic necessity of producing a new version every other year or so, and to meet deadlines, they have not done it with much elegance.
Cheers,
John

FBI: New Internet Threat Growing

Monday, March 24, 2008 8:29 AM

By: Ronald Kessler Article Font Size

Criminals who seize control of tens of thousands of home and office computers through what are known as "botnets" are a dramatically growing threat, Shawn Henry, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, tells Newsmax.

Even hospitals and police departments may be at risk from the threat.

Since last spring, the FBI has arrested 11 individuals who allegedly infected and commandeered 1 million personal computers and turned them into robots that did their bidding, Henry says.

While the FBI has been making inroads, the number of such cyber crimes grows alarmingly each year, costing tens of billions of dollars. Consumers need to take preventive measures to minimize the danger to their computers.

Besides technical precautions like using antivirus programs, spyware protection programs, and firewall programs and keeping them updated, Henry advises computer users to think of the Internet as they would a dangerous neighborhood where their personal safety may be threatened.

“If you’re walking in a neighborhood that’s a high crime neighborhood, you have to be aware of your surroundings,” Henry says. “You don’t walk looking at your shoes and walk straight ahead. You’re aware of what’s going on. You’re looking ahead, you’re looking to your side, you hear somebody who’s wa... Read more

Read more

Here is a URL from a story on SlashDot today about how windows 7 determines if you have an internet connection:

hxxp://blog.superuser.com/2011/05/16/windows-7-network-awareness/

I disabled this via the registry hack, as I don't need MS to inform me that I might have networking issues, I think I can figure that one out on my own

Here is an excerpt from the article on SlashDot:

In Windows 7, any time you connect to a network, Windows tells you if you have full internet access or just a local network connection. It also knows if a WiFi access point requires in-browser authentication. How? It turns out, a service automatically requests a file from a Microsoft website every time you connect to any network, and the result of this attempt tells it whether the connection is successful.

My subscription with PC Advisr ended recently with issue 118. I renewed my subscription and I have been sent issue 120.The problem is that I was interested in an article that was in issue 119. It was about creating a search facility for your website using MYSQL and PHP.I think that this issue is not available in the shops now. Could someone scan this article for me? Or does anyone already have this on file? Could they email it to me?

Answer:Article from issue 119

I've just tried scanning the article you are referring to. It doesn't work. It's awful. If you like to email me your address I will post you the two pages you require.
