Harddrive issues.  omg I have to fix this.

Question: Harddrive issues.  omg I have to fix this.

I did something really dumb and please please tell me I dont have to learn my lesson on this particular instance.I have a WHOLE BUNCH of stuff on my hardrive on Computer #1. A fortune worth of mp3 and more importantly... about 5 years worth of digital pictures. Some are backed up, most are not. I was trying to get them onto another hard drive (Computer #2), (as a backup) since I've been having issues with that computer (#1). My cd-rom on computer #1 has failed, and I couldn't get it to work to back up all my pics. Well, long story shorter... I didn't have a cord that would connect my computers so I thought to myself... well hey.. I've swapped hardrives before... added them.. perhaps I could just put #1's hardrive in computer #2, and then it'd be easy to copy everything from #1 to #2.Now it's all hosed. I got computer #2 back up and running by doing a windows repair. How can I possibly get #1 going again? OMG I HAVE TO DO IT. I'm going to try putting in the windows disc right now, and try to repair it... but currently here is what is happening....I turn it on... it goes to the energy star screen... says master disk, slave disk stuff.. then says: boot from cd: failure boot from cd: failurethen the dreaded... A disk read error occured. Press cntrl-alt-del to restart.HELP PLEASE!

Preferred Solution: Harddrive issues.  omg I have to fix this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Harddrive issues.  omg I have to fix this.

Ok .. well not that anyone is actually reading this.. but I got my computer running again, after running the windows disc and repairing the installation/hardware configuration. I think I'll grab my external hard drive from work and copy those pics asap!!!

Hi Jadugar,

Welcome to Lenovo forums

As I understood that you are looking for the graphics card which is compatible with your H530s desktop.

As this model is compatible with AMD Radeon HD  up to  2GB or NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 2GB.

Also you need to install the driver which supports these graphic cards.

Hope this helps! Do post us back for further queries.

Best regards,

Lemmee see...I have the gist of RAMBUS but have a few questions before going shopping so I don't completely eff it up:  1)Install in pairs where each half of the pair is the same speed and capacity as the other.  A second pair (4-slot m'board) must match in speed but need not match in capacity.  Optimal config assumed w/out defaulting to lowest speed if different speed pairs are used.  Right??  OK, now the nitty gritty part where I am an idiot.  Take Ebay for example.  I see pics of RIMM's and the product ID/part # is printed and is followed by either a '/8' or '/16'?  I think I need the 16...but what does this mean?  2nd question:  I see -40 and -45  (ns?) listed on these RIMM's also.  My system supports up to 50ns and I assume that the higher number is better, right?  But I do not see anything for sale that says -50 on it?  Hmmm?  Below in my Memory Snapshot, the memory currently installed (one slot) says 400MHZ...so where does PC 800 derive from?  Or do the 2 slots function as a pair 400 + 400 = 800 = thus PC800?  Only other thing i can figure is that 400 is the channel speed and RDRAM is 2-channel per card or something = 800.  Bottom line, I can go 2GB, but I need to know what exactly I'm looking for from a specs standpoint and my machine.  Longwinded............sorry and thanks from the idiot.  Snapshot below.Memory Controller             &nbs... Thinkpad Yoga 14 S3 version USB 3 Reconnects in loop for ever! I'm facing this problem since almost 2 weeks and not finding the right solution. I own a USB 3 external hard drive case inserted with an SSHD inside. It work just perfect on all pc around me, and actually works on my TY 14 S3 as well but only on the USB 2 port, or if I switch the USB 3 ports in the Bios to USB 2, or if I don?t puss the connector full in, it works on USB 2 speed.  Don?t know is it a driver issue or a windows 10 problem, or it would be the Bios. Bios is on the updated newest running JFET48WW(1.25) version. Driver manager seems all right no exclamation or driver missing and so on. Actually by google search advice I have turned off all energy saving option at all USB port, and I did the same in the Power Management as well in the OS. I find this a big issue to have on a computer like this without the possibility to transfer file on a acceptable speed. Just to mention there is no Ethernet port here.   Happy to try any solution you guys have.

My 2 year and three months old desktop computer system started to play up. It wouldn't recognise USB printer and other devices. I told the system was in need of a reformat.I formatted the hard drive and Reinstalled xp pro,it went without a hitch.I installed a new pci card with 5 USB 2.0 ports, as i only had usb 1.0 ports previously. Now the system will not recognise my thumb drive (flash disk). It installs it as a unknown device. Everything else works perfectly. Including usb printer. Usb adsl modem > usb digital camera.I have tried all i could think of to make this thumb drive work but it will not.Previously the thumb drive worked 100% on this system, and currently works 100% on any other computer running xp.I cannot run any drivers for the thumb drive as the only ones supplied are for win 98 and xp will not read them. I have been working with computers for over 10 years but right now I have the MOST bizarre problem.   I can't figure it out and I would welcome anyone's (creative) input.I have 10 NEC Powermate Eco PCs.  If you are not familiar with these they use a Transmeta Crusoe TM5800 processor.  I have had them about a year and they have worked perfectly up to today.  They are all in the same room at my office.  I went in and turned them all on.  Three fired up as normal but 7 refused to boot.  The power light came on and the HDD light flashed for about 15 seconds and then went off.  There was nothing on the screen and no activity after the first 10 or 15 seconds.  I thought it was BIZARRE and highly improbable that all 7 would fail on the same day so my thoughts went to power.  Now here is the bizarre part:  If I carry one of these machines to a different room in the building it boots up normally.  When I carry it back into the room it has lived in for a year IT BOOTS NORMALLY!!!  I had to do this for all 7 machines!  Carry them out, plug them in and boot them elsewhere, carry them back and they boot fine.Is this weird or what????  I checked the all the power supplies for these boxes that wouldn't boot and they are all putting out 18.5 VDC as they should. . . in both rooms. . . ??? I am going crazy to figure this out. . . help!

Answer:The  M O S T  bizarre problem (long)

It sounds like a building power problem to me too.Possibly an intermittant wiring connection or component breaking down as the extra load is applied.I'd be getting that checked first before looking at the computers.

This has been an ongoing problem that sometimes I luck out and can correct somehow.  I have a Toshiba  Satelite computer and my HP psc2175xi printer has been hooked up to it for at least a year.  Often when I shut the printer down, when I turn it back on, it does it's initial few noises, then goes into a repetative clicking of something inside it.  I can print a document sometimes while it is clicking but whenever it finishes clicking, it gives an error message and won't do anything else like print from the computer.  It will often print from the button on the printer though.  It was scanning but now it says there is trouble communicating with the scanner. What I've done already is disconnected the printer, turned the printer off, turned the computer off, then reinstalled the program for the printer, turned the computer back on, uninstalled the program, and then the printer.   I've done all these actions in various order as well, and I've changed usb ports around too.The first problem I need to work on is what the clicking malfunction is (about 60-100seconds worth) when I initially doesn't work.   Any ideas out there?Desperately,Margie

Answer:After I  reformatted  problem...

If you have a real Windows start up diskette, you first need to make sure that the floppy drive is set to boot prior to the hard drive. THis is set in the BIOS. Most machines are like this, but we need to make sure yours is.What is the computer make and model? Ususally there is a message onscreen during boot up to indicate what keys need to be pressed to get into the BIOS.Once this is done the floppy will indicate several messages, one of which will be the designation of the CDROM. Please post all of the start up messages. If you have a real boot disk and everything is set up correctly, the final message on the screen should be an A:>

Answer:help     o.s installation went bad!

Well I am surprised that you got it to install from the laptop's CD. I assume this is a real Windows CD as opposed to a restore. You will have trouble with WGA in the near future on both machines most likely as Windows is only licensed to one machine per CD.I don't know if this relates to your current dilemma or not. Did you activate WIndows or go through the WGA test at the Windows update site at any point? Does the timing of that corellate to the problem beginning?

Please help! I am stuck on an issue with a USB stick recently purchased. The stick is fine, the issue is it will only work on the 2 USB ports on back of the computer, not with the USB ports on the front. I have tried other devices, and the same thing happen, fine with back usb ports, but not with front. I downloaded a program to see if the fron ports were recognised, and this has told me they are USB 1.1, but i'm not sure if this means they are actually connected? Anyway, i cant get any device to work on the front USB ports, any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer:front USB  ISSUES! front USB's not working?

The front ports may not, if they are indeed USB 1.1, deliver enough power for the USB stick to work.Try connecting a device that does not draw a lot of power, like a mouse, to see if they are functioning properly.

Okay. So, I just bought a new 160 GB 7200 RPM with 8MB cache from Western Digital (desktop computer HDD). Now, as I popped the burnt Windows XP copy into the CD-ROM drive, for some reason it did not work. All I have is a message with the following:

File cpquarry.sys caused an unexpected error (12800) at line 3514 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\setup.c

Press any key to continue.

Before you go on to tell me to hit "partition a drive", NOTHING came up. The same thing happened with my old HDD, as well. I don't know what the hell is happening, and any help would be greatly appreciated. It just automatically went in to the blue screen with Windows Setup, but no interactive options came up... a small bar at the bottom of the screen just said it was installing certain things.

Hi,

I recently purchased a new Seagate Barracuda 500gb harddrive. I installed the drive and initially my computer refused to boot up with the drive plugged in. I tried a different SATA port and all was fine, the harddrive had been working for the previous few days.

Although, today, I attempted to start up my computer, and once again, my computer refused to boot. I unplugged the drive and it was able to boot up. I tried other SATA ports and it didn't boot up. Finally, I removed the drive all together from my computer, and yet again, it refused to boot up! I unplugged various things from my computer, such as the DVD drive, and now my computer boots.

Any thoughts? Anybody?

Much thanks in advance.

Following up from this issue that was solved:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/653416-solved-big-problem-please-help.html

Armed with a fresh install of XP and the computer running smoother than ever, I seem to of come to a grinding halt.

Basically, the computer randomly locks up after I've left it on for a while, usually when I'm trying to access My Computer or something, it occasionally gives me a pop-up window saying some data has been lost. It always says the data has been lost from the F: it seems.

Everytime this happens I have to restart the computer by holding down the power button (no other option as it's completely locked up) and every time I restart it it runs CHKDSK on F:. This takes a few minutes saying it has to check for consistency etc. After a while it comes back with the results and has numerous files saying 'Recovered file orphaned:' or something like that.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Is CHKDSK deleting my files or something due to an error on the drive?

A friend Recently donated to me a Segate 40GB hardrive (Model ST340810A), which I could certinly use If I could only get my mobo (Shuttle Hot 661 i440bx) to recognise it. The auto detect feature of my bios will not find the hardrive irregardless as to weather I have it as a slave of master. If anyone could provide some help on this matter it would be greatly apprechated.

Answer:New Harddrive Issues

I just had the same problem installing my Maxtor 80gb HD last week. I had to update/flash my BIOS, I knew this was a risky operation, but else I had a useless HD. So go to your mobo´s manufacterer homepage, en download the latest version of the bios for it.
My mobo is from GigaByte, and luckily they had a good description how to do so, it's very important that you follow procedures from your own mobo manufacter.

Warning: Flashing you bios can do harm to your computer if anything goes wrong

So it's at you own risk, but it's likely to be necsesary for your problem.

Good luck

I am running WinXP Home Edition SP2 and, lately I have noticed that my harddrive has been increasingly using more and more space. Example, yesterday I was using about 18 gigs of spaces and today I am using 19 gigs. I got my computer used and when I got it, it was using 5-6 gigs of space. I have had this computer for a little less than a year. I have about 5 gigs of music/video and, about 1-2 gigs of programs. Where is the other 8-9 gigs coming from?

Answer:Harddrive issues...

Windows and Office take up lots, rest is more than likely just crap and temporary internet files. You should buy a program called Windows Washer, it'll clean up your computer totally for you and gain you back tons of space and performance.

ok. I used kill disk on my harddrive twice. [the freeware version]. I start the computer, and it says put a boot disk in the drive. i put in the windows xp home edition upgrade disk and it starts the install. When its on the intelligent I/O controller, i get an error. [dac960nt.sys is corrupted >.<] I restart like it says and it goes on its merry way. it gets up to the point where it says 'starting windows' then i get this huge full screen error. It says that 'A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage.

SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED'

then a bunch of stuff saying that if its the first time ive gotten that screen to just restart, if its during setup i need to get windows security updates for my hardware's software, then

'Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000006f (0xC0000020, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)'

Will someone please tell me whats up with windows THIS time...

EDIT: i am installing windows 98 first [it is formatting the harddrive. again.] then i will try to install xp from the upgrade disk.

Answer:More harddrive issues...

Try testing the RAM: http://www.memtest.org/ Bad memory often shows up during installation of XP.
Or test the hard drive with the manufcturer's diagnostics.
Or try another CD/DVD drive.
Or try another Windows XP CD.

Question: Harddrive Issues!

Ok heres the story...

I recently got a brand new harddrive for my Dell computer. It was going to be a slave originally. Surprise to me, theres no room in the Dell for another harddrive. So I remove the old one and use the new one. Now I want to put the old one in my old gateway computer to use. (It has all my good software and stuff.) But unfortunately upon booting up after the switch, It says 'Windows failed to start normally' And presents me with the options of the different safe modes and to try again normally. None work. After fiddling with it I managed to get a configuration that worked. The original harddrive that was in the gateway is set to master and the old Dell one is slaved to it. Now this would be perfect and all, but both harddrives have thier own copy of windows. (The old Dell one has Windows XP sp2, and the old gateway one has Windows XP Home Edition sp2). I have file access to all of my stuff on the slaved drive, but none of the programs or the ability to use the Add/Remove Programs on the slaved drive. Is there some way to merge the programs and settings on the slave drive onto the master drive? thanks in advance.

Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to review my humble request for assistance. This problem definitely has my brain in a loop - I worked as a computer tech for a year and I've never seen anything quite like this.

I'm running an e-machine T5082 (I know, I know) which is currently running 3 hard drives + 1 external USB Hard Drive. I have a USB Wireless Adapter, and also periodically use a couple of other USB Drives.

About 2 weeks ago one of my hard drives started periodically giving me an error message pertaining to the USB Drive that said "There is no disk in the drive. please insert a disk into drive device\harddisk1\dr2". Over the period of a week it started to occur with increasing frequency. Putting a flash drive in is normally what triggered it, but after a certain point it would occur regardless of weather or not a flash drive had been put in at all. Eventually all usb related devices started to malfunction in various ways... some would create multiple "Unknown Drives" that served no function, and most USB drives + my external wouldn't allow you to access the drive through my computer because it couldn't see the drive letter, or the link to the drive wouldn't work - you would have to manually type in the drive letter in the address bar.

At this point I noticed that the problem was on both of my other hard drives as well even though there was no direct interaction between them... The machine had not been hooked ... Read more

Just today, I went down about 8GB of memory, for some unknown reason, I tried SpaceMonger, and found my Program files and such using the adequate memory, 19GB or so, but there is an unscannable 40.8GB that may be to blame. How do I check this?

I just bought a Neo mobile storage harddrive case and cant seem to get it to install. When i hook it up it says its installing the drivers for a mass storage device on the usb port. When it finishes install it says problems have occured that may prevent the device from being used. When i look in the device manager, its not even listed! Im running winxp pro- sp2, and have an aopen ax4b pro 533 mobo. I have also tried this on my laptop running xp pro sp1, and on an old win 2k machine and none of them have gotten it to work. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have a machine with winxp a 1.6ghz duron with 384 ram with a 32x24x48 aopen cdrw as the master and a benq 52x cdrom as the slave. The hardrdrive is a wd 120gig as the master. When I try to play a cdr in the benq the harddrive lite starts flashing and the music picks up the beat and sounds horrible. I put the cdr in the aopen and it plays perfect. I have replaced the benq with other cdroms with the same effect. Also I have replaced the cable. If I try to play mp3's or wma files in the benq it plays perfect. Any ideas? This only started when I had a new clean install of winxp from win98se.

Answer:cdrom and harddrive have issues

Don't use that drive for music!!

Kidding aside, some CD-ROM's just don't seem to function as well on secondary channels. Try exchanging the writer with the CD-ROM and see if that helps. You might even try other combinations to see if any of them work better. Just be sure to check all the jumpers when moving the drive connections.

Look around in BIOS setup. Though peer concurrency is enabled on most motherboards by default (accessing 2 drives simultaneously), some BIOS setups have an explicit setting for it.

Right-click the drives in Device Manager and check their properties. Be sure that "DMA if available" is chosen (under IDE controllers).

Hi,

MIght be a good idea to make sure you have the drives the proper place on the ribbon cables. I know that you know, but so easy to mess this one up.

I am trying to upgrade my hard drive in an old AMD K6-2/450 system. I have a PC100 M599LMR Socket 7 motherboard and the BIOS is AMI Release 07/02/1999S.

I installed a Hitachi 80 GB drive. My old drive was a Maxtor 10 GB (it was making a lot of noise and driving me crazy). The CMOS was set to autodetect the primary master IDE device, however when it reached this part of boot up the system would hang and not go any further. I then tried to update the CMOS myself. It asks for Cyl, Heads and Sectors as input. I couldn't find these values for my new drive so I used the F3 to command detection while inside CMOS and the system locked up. I then reattached my old drive to see what settings it detected. It had 19382 Cyl, 16 Heads and 63 Sectors. I tried multiples of the 19382 Cyl to arrive at the correct 80 GB drive size but my CMOS doesn't have enough data fields to enter this value.

What can be done to get this drive setup?

Thanks

I recently purchased a new 80 GB HD upon which I have installed Win XP (thus NTFS file system)
However, my former HD (a 20GB with Win 98 [FAT32]) has some vital information I would like to transfer.
I have tried everything I can imagine to get this former HD to appear, but it will not show up either in the BIOS or in XP. Also, when I tried to boot off it alone, it wouldn't work anymore.
I have:
adjust jumper settings for all combinations of master/slave/cable select
used 1 and 2 IDE cables
swapped positions on the IDE cables if only using 1 cable for each HD

I'm assuming something has compromised the integrity of the old HD, but I cannot think of what it is (and thus how to fix it).

Thanks for your help

ok, this problem started when i hooked an IDE hard drive up to my computer that runs a maxtor 80gb SATA HD in order to access the IDE one. All went well with that. Problem started when i unhooked the IDE hard drive and tried to reboot my computer. At first i was getting stuck on the blue windows screen that says windows xp and pops up right before you get to choose which user account you want to log in to. it would sit there for hours without ever loading. then after trying a few different things i hooked the IDE hard drive up and the computer booted right up. i tried a bunch of different options with the system bios, but still nothing. finally i tried resetting the system defaults for the bios. with everything hooked back up the way it was originally and my fingers crossed, i rebooted. now i get a screen saying," Diskette Drive 0 seek failure. Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility." I've tried safe mode and it doesn't work either. I've checked my boot priority and made sure all the cables were connected securely.
If somebody could please help i would be so appreciative. I just want my computer back!
Sincerely,
ScottyG

Answer:Browser + harddrive Issues.

restart your computer in safemode with networking,

scan for viruses

scan for disk errors

if problem persists, then download spybot search and destroy ver 1.62

when installing, de-select tea timer install ( its too bothersome, pops up everytime a registry entry is made/changed )

run spybot in safemode, when done fix selected items, then reboot..

Was everyting working ok while in safemode?

In Aug. 2017 I bought a new Flex 5 from Office Depot. It sits on an end table next to my chair and is plugged into ac adapter all day. I use it on my lap for web browsing, and some open office spreadsheets. It does not ever get bounced around. 3 weeks after purchase, I come out in morning to find PC will not accept any input. Power on cycle ends up with PC going into diagnosis and repair, which it fails to do. After that it would never go past the initial screen. Office Depot said bad harddrive and gave another Flex 5. The 2nd Flex 5 ran for 3 weeks, and then it also failed. This time the PC got extremely slow, and after power on cycle, it to tried to recover but failed. However, this time it did go far enough to let me get tothe advanced troubleshooting. CHKDSK /F corrected errors on both the C: and D: partitions. The X: partition had errors too, but the partition is write protected and could not be fixed. I was able to use xcopy to retrieve all of my data from C drive to a flash drive. The harddrive seemed to work fine, but it failed trying to do a RESET with save data, and a full RESET. It seemed to be due to the X: errors. Once again Office Depot decided to give me a new Flex 5. My current Flex 5 has been running fine since early November, until it started running slower on Monday night, and Tuesday morning it quit. Once again it goes into diagnostics mode, then repair mode, and then says repair failed.  CHKDSK found and corrected errors on the C :... Read more

How can I get this preload on to a new HD?

If you thought this was a tutorial, sorry, it's not. Use google
Short version of the story below this huge ball of words.

Anywhu, to the topic. I've been getting BSODs about my SSD, and was told by both pros and friends this was something I couldn't do much about. Something about bad firmware and stuff, (check my PC stats at the end of the post, i think this SSD is known to have issues.) so I went to OCZs homesite, found sum firmware update stuff and downloaded the toolbox and it's manual. In big red letters it said I had to change to ACHI mode (done already by dem ppl who put together my pc ) and NOT have the SSD drive in question run as primary drive / OS drive. So i just put in the windows installation CD that came with the PC, reinstalled windows on my other drive (a HDD, Western Digital of some green sort, 2TB), and booted through it. At the beginning it did all the usual stuff. Ask for what password and user n shit. Then, after login, i noticed I couldn't connect to the internetz, also my resolution was pinned down at a max of 1280x720 (with some old-style design). Later I discovered I had no drivers for the network thing, and something else probably went wrong. HOWEVER, I could easly reboot, change the boot drive and go back to normal on my SSD (which I am in right now.) I have a strong feeling I have done something terribly wrong, as i didn't do anything with the OS files or configurations on the SSD (2 users in one user = wut), probably screwing up something. Hi

This is my problem,

I have an old computer which I am fixing to donate, it has two hard drives

One 60 gigs (this is where windows is installed)
One 500 gigs this is where my personal data is installed

I removed the 500 gig drive since I want to keep my data
Once I removed this drive the computer does not boot up
nor recognize the drive I lfeft in there (setting master) , it states unknown device.

When I put back the 500 gig (setting Slave) drive the computer boots up no problem
both drives are detected

So both drives work if slave/master setting used
one drive connected as master and the computer does not detect it

same goes with making the 500 gig the master or cable select and connecting it

I have removed the battery to reset the cmos (still no)
I have changed cables
I have tried to reset the bios
I have looked at all configurations in the bios
there is no setting that can help me re detect the new drive

Please help

Any of you can figure this out I would greatly appreciate it
Thanks

first off i apologize if this is in the wrong place or if i missed a forum already on this, i didnt see anything on partitions.now to the matter at hand. i know how to partition my hard drive generally with windows 7, which is what i am using, but i have recently put a new motherboard and processor in my computer. this has made me have to re-install windows 7. it seems that all of my old partitions are now gone. i didn't think much of this i just went ahead and looked into reallocating them. but when i try to re-partition them it will not let me do this. the option to create a partition for these unallocated slots is not appearing. if there is any advice you could give me it will be much appreciated,in the mean time i will be looking into it myselfthank you in advance

Answer:windows 7, harddrive partition issues

Reinstalling the OS does not effect existing partitions unless you intentionally deleted the partitions during the installation process. You need to explain the situation in more detail please.

I bought a new harddrive about 4 months ago because the one i was using kinda crapped out on me. I don't know what the problem was, so i just bought a new one and the old one has been sitting around in my room. I need an old word document off of the old harddrive, so i plug it into my external enclosure to see if it will work. it does, but when i go to "my documents" i can't get it to open because of the following message:

This, i'm sure, is due to the fact that the harddrive has windows XP Professional on it, which was password protected.

The question: What is the easiest way to access my file and how do I go about doing it? i figured that i could boot from the harddrive, but i don't know how to do that with an external harddrive.... so if you know i would like to know, otherwise i need to find a way to enter the password that i know it is using, or i need a way to hack into the "my documents" folder. any help would be greatly appreciated.

**Edit**: the folder i cannot access is "documents and settings\eric" not "my documents"

First, RAID was really designed with business servers in mind and not for the home user: Why RAID is (usually) a Terrible Idea - Puget Custom Computers
Second, you have Microsoft Security Essentials and Ad-Aware antivirus installed. Both of these accomplish essentially the same task and may cause conflicts due to using the same system resources and/or scanning the same system files simultaneously.
Third, there were no .dmp files included. There are some event viewer errors regarding your NTFS becoming corrupted.Run Disk Check with Automatically fix file system errors checked. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log (you may need to search for wininit instead of chkdsk).
For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.

Hi there! Hoping someone can give me some advice on my laptop as it has been having issues for a while. WIll try to make this short. It is a refurbished Dell Latitude E6500. It has Windows 7 on it. Trouble started a few weeks ago with a notice, as it was starting, about needing to reseat the harddrive. I researched how to do this and did it. I continued to receive the same notice about this but was able to hit F12 to do some form of diagnostics and from there could just hit EXIT and the computer would function normally. Then it became more frequent even as I reseated the drive several times.

So, I got a new harddrive at BestBuy but of course there is no OS or anything to actually make it all work. I know I am probably doing things all wrong here but I put a WIndows XP disk from my husband's computer in with the new HD ( just fishing for signs of life here) and got nothing. Old HD in now and here is what it does:
I can turn it on and all it does is go to a black screen with a cursor blinking. If I turn it on and hold F8 then I can go to the list where safe mode and what all is available. I have selected several of these and all it does is go to a light blue ( windows type) screen and does NOTHING. I have an arrow that is responsive to the touchpad at this point but can't DO anything from here. So, thoughts? I hope this is not totally hopeless...thanks for reading and I would appreciate any help.

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

Answer:Month old G550 harddrive/warranty issues

Hi! Recovering hard drive information isn't an easy task. You need to have some knwoledge to do that. If you don't know how to proceed, maybe you should pay someone. Indeed, as that person said, warranty is only applied to hardware. Remember this: Always, always your data is your own responsability! In my case, when I bought my laptop, I made a recovery disk set before start using it. If you want to install "preinstalled software", you can enter to your laptop site and start downloading drivers and applications! Cheers.

Answer:Access / Harddrive issues - computer hijacked

Not knowing what version of Windows you have prevents me from being very specific.  If you can get a repair disc (for Windows 7) or USB drive (for Windows 8.1), you can boot from that, go to the command prompt, and copy any data you don't want to lose to an external hard drive or flash drive.  From the command prompt you can use the Xcopy command.  If you need to know the syntax, just type xcopy /? and it will tell you.  Another option would be to boot from a Linux disc like Ubuntu, Mint, or Puppy and do the copies.  You can download the Ubuntu ISO from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop then burn it to a DVD.

Good luck.

Okay.My T43 thinkpad laptop with an IDE interface will not recognize my 320 IDE gb harddrive . I cannot recall the entire message that comes up on my computer screen, but I know the message has 'not related to firmware' sentence within the entire message that pops up on my screen everytime I insert my 320 gb harddrive into my T43 thinkpad laptop. This harddrive was compatible with my former R51 thinkpad laptop. I checked the specs for the T43 ibm thinkpad and other people with T43 thinkpad laptop, some of them have 320 IDE gb hard drives inserted into the harddrive slot of their T43 thinkpad laptop. Should I alter the BIOS settings? I used the covering for my R51 laptop into the harddrive slot of my new T43 harddrive. Does that make a difference about the compatiability of the harddrive with the T43 thinkpad laptop.Do you think that it has do with my OS that is installed on each harddrive as well? For the harddrive that came with my T43 thinkpad laptop, linux is installed on the 60gb ide harddrive, and windows vista is installed on my 320 gb ide harddrive

Answer:harddrive compatiability issues with T43 thinkpad laptop

Load Windows, install the oldest BIOS, fixed.

I have an older Western Digital USB external hard drive (Model WD1200b008) from probably 2003 0r '04. I have a bunch of important data backed up on this drive and it is misbehaving. It has two lights on it... green and red... green means it's being read fine... red means your screwed. I'm getting red. From what I've researched, usually these either fail or don't, I'm hoping the functioning red light means it's NOT burnt out. I feel like this is somewhere in the middle and am hoping there's something I can do. Tried unplugging, plugging, changing cables, manually loading the drivers. etc.

Anyone have any other ideas?

thnx in adv.

Answer:Older Western Digital Harddrive Issues.

Hi Particle man and welcome to Majorgeeks forums .

Split the enclosure and mount the drive directly into another PC would be my first suggestion with a drive of this age as it's unlikely to be under warranty now. Just hope that it's the enclosure controller that's playing up.

HI,

I'm trying to install a 4GB Quantum Bigfoot TX harddrive into a 100MHz machine. Everything has gone smooth except that it only recognizes 500 MB of the 4 GB Harddrive. Does anyone know how to tweek the machine to recogine the whole (or more of) the drive.

thanks,
bz34

Answer:100MHz Pentium Machine harddrive issues

Hi bz34

Check in the system bios to see if the full size of the drive is seen there. If not you may be able to find a bios upgrade for your system board that will enble it to see the full size of the hard drive. If there is no upgrade for the bios then use the floppy disk that should have come with the new hard drive to set up the drive. It should install a drive overlay (like EZBIOS) that will let your operating system use the full size of the drive.

Maxtor now has the support for Quantum hard drives. If you don't have the setup floppy you could try the maxblast floppy to see if that will work. You should find it on this site.

Please help!!!! I installed another hard drive yesterday and today whenever i tried to start up my comp it keeps saying cant find NTLDR please restart... so i tried restarting, no dice... Then i try reparing using the windows xp install disk... nope didnt work either... so know i am trying to reinstall windows and have lost all the data on my comp..... and after its done formating and is copying files.. it keeps says at 35% that it cant find a certain file and asks me if i would either retry, quit installation or just skip that file and risk Windows not working properly... so no i am just skipping every file that it says it cant find or whatever......

i hate myself..... all my files... GONE

ok well the thing is whenever i try to reinstall windows on either hard drive it screws up at 35% when copying files.... ok well i guess i lossed all of my files, sigh... o well... i just wanna be able to atleast reinstall windows...

this freaking sucks.. i cant even install windows.... wtf am i supposed to do?

Answer:Major HardDrive/Windows XP issues!!!! Need help ASAP!!

1) Relax.
2) You said you formatted the disk? Thats not good for file recovery.
3) Your windows CD is probably bad if it stops at the same spot and gives you errors like that.

I made an image of my daughter in law's computer in order to put it on a new hard drive. I used Acronis True Image 2010 to make the image. I made the image at my house as I was doing other work on her computer. As we both have the same computer I figured I could restore the image using my computer as I had returned hers. The image was restored on the new hard drive but when I booted it the display didn't fill the screen. I changed the resolution to 1280x 1024. That increased the display size but it still didn't fill the whole screen.
I went to device manager and it had question marks in the other devices section next to video controller and network controller.
It told me the drivers for these devices weren't installed. I tried to reinstall them but windows couldn't find the drivers.
Is this all because there might be different controllers on our computers?
Although they are the same model computer, Dell Inspiron E1505, I am not sure we have the same video software.
I don't know what to try next other than putting the drive in her computer and seeing what happens there.

Answer:Display issues after installing image on nnew harddrive

You could try what is says on the Dell site and enter the service tag of the computer to get the correct driver for your particular machine.

Hey guys,

I've been trying to help my friend get her computer issues worked out for a while now. She's quite a few states away from me, so I can't be there physically to look at the hardware, and test stuff to get a verdict. The problems have been this:

During gaming, MMORPGS specifically; Neverwinter Nights, City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, there has been something that has caused either the application itself to close/generate a crash error, or the computer gets a BSOD + error message and automatically restarts.

First I tried getting her drivers updated. DirectX, video card, etc in hopes that it wasn't a hardware issue. Turns out none of that helped. For a little bit I had the same problem, and it ended up being overheating. Caused my computer to restart, but errors weren't generated. Nothing in BIOS suggested overclocking; so I'm assuming that isn't the issue. Next thing I thought could be the problem was bad RAM. RAM was interchanged (two different 512MB sticks), both high quality pieces, no difference shown. So, now it's down to what? The motherboard or the harddrive? I wouldn't expect the CPU or video card to be the problem with these sorts of errors. Power supply is also more than adequate for the PC, so that's not it either. Through a little exploring, I found out about "Eventvwr.msc" and had her run that and take a look at the errors. The system errors were all

Answer:Computer issues.. Restarting/crashes during gaming, harddrive issue?

You could try a chkdsk /f to be run at the next boot. Find this option in Disk Management.
There is also a program called HDD Regenerator, which does just that, regenerate the HD without destroying anything on it. www.dposoft.net
Works like a charm.
Do not underestimate the importance of a GOOD powersupply. Some 500w PSUs crap out at relatively small loads, other 350w PSUs happily drive a AMD64, latest ATIcard and 10 drives etc. without batting an eyelid.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

Tom

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

Answer:New harddrive from lenovo to replace my dead old harddrive

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

I recently did something real dumb. I make t-shirts and recently finished up the design on one. It was saved and ready to go to print, but I had not backed it up yet on cd. ( This is the really dumb thing I didn't do ) I was emailing the file to a friend in .psd format for him to look at and I scaled it down from 16"T x 14"W @ 200dpi. to 5 3/4"T x 5"W for him to look at. As I said earlier, I had not backed it up yet to cd. I saved it and sent it. Not long after saving, I realized what I had done. I do not have any other copies of it other than a high res. print out I did on 8 1/2" x 11" glossy. It doesn't look horrible, but there is a noticeable difference in quality now. I have tried everything I can do to restore it back to the way it was, but nothing seems to work. Is there some trick I do not know of, or is there any way I can go back into a memory cache? of a few days prior and get it? I realize I may have to re-create most of it if not all, but I would really like to not have to do that. I know I can scan in the high res. print, but I will still have to go and re-do color seperations again..thus re-doing the file. I am being too optimistic and hopeful in thinking it is still in some sort of cache or something? I have a PC. 1.8gHz P4. 80gig HD. Win XP Pro. Answer:mssvcnes.exe  what is this

asian_angel.....Here's what I would do ........Go to My Computer   C drive ...........Windows ...open windows folder ...find the Prefetch folder and open it ......then DELETE all the files that are listed in there ...... It wont harm your system to delete them .  Windows will simply replace whatever it needs as it needs it . ( they are junk files ) You should probably run a spyware and malware scanner to clean out your system as well .Let us know dl65
