Hi, I have recently recieved my HP Split X2 back from HP last week because the docking station would charge but the computer would not and now it's the opposite. I turned on my computer it was working fine, I plug it in to charge and i notice that the battery icon didnt change to charging so i unplugged it and plugged it back in and nothing so i undock the computer and that charges just fine i place it back and next thing i know it shuts off on me. i press the power button and nothing but when I hold it down the Windows button on the computer stays glowing if i continue to hold the power button and if i undock it the led light is red. Also if i have it plugged it the windows button will flash 4 times and on the 4th time itll stay lit up until i release it I just got my computer back and  it's acting up again i would really appreciate a way to fix this

Answer:Help, my computer wont turn on

I strongly expect this is due to hardware.

In reality, it could be anything from the PSU (Power Supply Unit) to RAM or motherboard. But i think it is a psu problem.

Put your hand over the rear PSU air exhaust vent. Is it cool or very warm?
If it's hot your PSU is undoubtedly running near its design limits.

Also, check to see that the cpu heatsink is seated properly. (Which is your cpu fan, and is quite big so you shouldn't miss it).

Regards Jase

when i go to turn on my computer, the regular short system beep is longer and then nothing happens, then it beeps again... and so on and so forth. prior to this problem my computer was running pretty unstable, for about 2 days it would reboot whenever it wanted and a couplke times i got a bluescreen message that i dont remember.... i didnt write it down cuz im a moron, i have a feeling it has something to do with a surge and the power supply and im hoping i can just get a new better power supply. does anyone have any idea?

PLEASE HELP! my computer is my lifeline!!!

Answer:computer wont turn on

It's possible that a power surge screwed up something but I would try doing a system restore before anything else. If that didn't work I'd try booting with the XP disk and doing an XP repair.

computer wont turn on please help me!!

i had just build a new computer, and at first it worked perfectly, i was able to play games and all, but after 2 days when i quit a game the computer suddenly shut down and when i try to turn it on it appears all is going to work but in just a few seconds all shuts down again, i don't get any messages of errors, i can only see the message "off mode in 5 sec." in the screen, but this will appear even if i disconnect the screen from the computer

can this be a power issue? or could it be that it overheat because of the game?

My computer specs are:
Intel Pentium4 660 Hyper Threading 3.6
Gigabyte LGA775
G5 looking Case with Enermax Noisetaker 485w ATX12v v.2.0
1GB ddr2 Dual channel
XFX Geforce 7600GT
2 Dvd drives
320GB
Zalman Heatsink/Fan
2 80 mm Fans

A week ago I added a 120mm fan to the outside of this case(on the side) http://www.epcbuyer.com/products.asp...ase-qtec-14452 screwed it to the bottom vent, the fan is pluged to a 4pin cord. I didnt didnt have time to test it until the next day to find out that my computer wont turn on, no lights, no fan movement, monitor is black but asks about monitor connected? when i unplug it from the PC. I dont know why there is a problem because theres a 80mm fan in the fan rack in the case plugged into a 4pin cord too, which ran fine.
People tell me its the PSU(485w should be plenty of power to support a extra fan thats 120mm right? ), motherboard or both. I searched the net and read about shortcircuts, and using anti static bags. Which at the time i was sitting on carpet when installing the fan but would any of this be related to the computer not turning on I need to find out why it wont turn on, whats causing this and whats the solutions. It will be Greatful if someone teaches me hows the right way to install a fan.

Answer:Computer Wont Turn On<<<

Hey there, and welcome to Techspot.

Yah, opening up and working on your computer on a carpet is really a dangerous thing to do. So much static electricity in carpets, that there is a chance you may have zapped something.

Can you give us some more details?

When the computer is OFF, do you see any LED lights lit up on your motherboard?
When you hit the power button, what EXACTLY happens? Fans spinning? Beeps?

Also, just to be sure, remove and re-seat your PSU connections, ram, video card, HDD connections etc. Something may have simply come loose.

Good luck!

well i just bought a new computer case for my comp so i took everything out of my old comp and put it in the case hooked everything up the same(i think) but i looked everywhere for unhooked in cables but i found them all to be plugged in buit my computer wont even turn on and i have no idea what the problem is please help!

Answer:computer wont turn on HELP!!!

Well, the fact you said "I Think" I've plugged the power cables into the motherboard correctly has painted the picture for me. Did the case come with a PSU and you are trying to use it in place of the old PSU? If so than it could be because of the Max Power supported is not up to par with your older PSU. If this isnt the case, then check the MB manual or some website with a diagram showing "Power Cable Connections for ATX boards". Otherwise let a professional take care of it, preferably a mutual friend.

Nothing appears on the monitor.
i've checked all the connections and they all seem fine.

maybe it just finally died? i hope not.

So, I got fed up and just unplugged the darn thing. I plugged it back in, and just my luck, the computer doesnt turn on anymore. I think i mightve messed up the power supply or something, does anyone have any advice?

Hello,

Did you lose power overnight? If so could have done some real damage to the PC if you dont have it hooked upto a surge protector.

Have yuo tried to turn off hte PSU with the switch in the back and then turn it back on?

Hi,
I had just installed a liquid cooling system on my computer. I checked it after a couple of hours and found that one of the connections wasnt water tight and there was a couple of drips on the graphics card. I took ou the LCS, the GPU and dried it out. It was all working fine then. I then proceeded to use my new computer and cracked vista with a timer stop crack. The os then downloaded updates and asked to restart which I allowed. However, when the computer restarted it would come on for about 2 seconds then turn off and do this again. This happened every time I turned the system on.
I stripped it down and checked the motherboard and processor, both seemed ok. I turned it on and it was coming back on so 1 by 1 I put the Ram, HDD etc etc back in. Everything seemed to be ok. I moved it back up to my computer room to check everything was really back working. BUT, when I started it up it wasn't POSTing again and there was a strange noise coming from it, like the hard drive spinning up, however the computer didn't turn off. There was no POST and when I plugged in the monitor and it wasn't picking it up. Can any1 advise me on what component's could be causing this or if the LCS dripping on my graphics card could break my mobo? All the capatitors on the mobo seem fine.

Answer:Computer wont turn on

water and electronics don't mix. That's why i don't recommend water-cooling. This is the risk you take. Some of your components have most likely shorted out. You will have to replace and swap out components until you have found the one(s) that have failed. good luck.

Put my computer into hibernation on friday night. Window is closed (my computer is right by a window). Leave the house. Come back Saturday afternoon. It's been raining all night and day. Find the window OPEN
It hasn't rained in from what I can tell, but the entire room is damp from the wet air.
Goto turn on my computer, it wont turn on.
The psu switch in the rear lights up, and the little green light on the motherboard lights up, so I assume the psu and mb are ok?

Does anyone have a step by step procedure they would suggest for me to go through to check why it;s not turning on?

I checked all the internal power connections and none seemed loose.
Not really sure what else to do...

Could exposure to moist air like that ruin anything?

Im having a problem with my pc, sometimes when I turn it on it fails to get to bois and does not even turn the screen on. I just try it after awhile and it works again. I have recently bought a new case and it came with an Omni 550watt power supply and the problem started after a couple of weeks of use. Does anyone know if the power supply is the problem?

2x200gig Seagate SATA HDs
1x120gig WD IDE HD

It might be the power supply, since Omni is an unknown brand, without any history behind it.

What do you think my problem is?

Answer:Computer wont turn on HELP!!!

worst case scenario fried mobo, I would try the following:

1.Make sure all connections are secure and none are loose maybe the plug itself is hanging out etc.

2.try a different power cord might just be damaged now. And check the power connector pins in your PSU are ok.

3.use a different PSU from a friend or other pc you may have.

4.Check inside the pc to make sure the power switch button pin connector hasn't been knocked off.

In my computer upstairs I have a NVIDA Geforce 6600 GT Graphics Card.
I went to play my game and it said your graphics card is outdated.
So I went to the site and installed NVIDA Geforce 6600 GT graphics card.
At the end of the instalation my computer restarted,
When my computer was loading up it was working fine, then when it gets to the part where it says windows, it doesnt show that part and stays black almost a really really dark blue color.
Is there any solution to this?

Hi,Attempt to perform a hard reset to remove all the excess static using: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768 if the above doesn't work:Attempt to connect the charger to an alternate power outlet, alternate power cable and if it doesn't work either You may need to contact HP on 1800-474-6836 for further support as you may need to get the pc sent to an hp repair center (ensure the pc is under an ADP warranty as otherwise there may be a charge included as the issue occurred after the accident you had).

Gah!
I've got an HP Pavillion Dekstop but I dont know what model it is since I bought it refurbished, they decided that the model needed to be scratched off. Anyway, my dad turned off the power bar to my computer while the computer was running, then when I turned the power bar on again the computer wouldn't turn on. I looked at the back and there is a green light that is flashing. When i flip the red switch to the left (looking above) the light flashes slower then when it is on the right. When I unplug the power chord in the back and the switch is on the right it still flashes but if its on the left it stops. When I try to start the computer nothing happens. It just doesn't do anything. I saw a similar thread about this but it didn't help me at all so this is a little more detailed desription of whats going on with me. The power bar is run through an extension chord to an outlet. This scenario has happened before but without the extension chord and it has pretty much fixed itself, I left it for a bit and the flashing green light would turn solid again. In this case I left it overnight and it didn't change so could you guys help me out?

thanks

Answer:My HP Computer wont turn on.

you can disconnect the PC from the power then press the power on button and hold it in for several seconds to drain any residual power. then let it set for 15-20 min and then plug it in and see if it powers up. if ti doesnt then your probably looking at having to strip the PC down to just the processor, then power up, shutdown and unplug, hold in the power button for several seconds, add ram, plug in, and power up, continue this process until you here beeps or have added back all the components or you get post.

Okay, so my computer has been down for a while due to a faulty power supply. I just got a new one today and it works. The light on the computer turns on, but nothing happens. Nothing on the monitor, no fans, nothing. I do get the POST beep though if I take the ram out. There is this one cord from the power supply that doesnt have a place to go. It is the 4 pin 12v atx connector. I have no clue what to do. Please help. Thanks.

Answer:My computer wont turn on.

Hi if it is the connector I am thinking of on all of the ATX motherboards I have used it plugs in to the left of the cpu on the motherboard.

First off the power supply is brand new and the only way it turns on is when I hook it up to a tester. The power supply works perfect. I did the bench test and still nothing happens. Every now and then when I push the power button the exhaust fan will start to spin for a split second and even more rare, the heatsink fan will start to spin for a split second. The motherboard is also new and the cpu and heatsink is also new. Ive tryed booting up with only the motherboard and processor (and heatsink) hooked up, still nothing happened. So I guess the only possiblities are a faulty motherboard, CPU, or maybe the RAM stick? Since the cpu and motherboard are new i'm thinking about returning both of them. I would feel much better though if there was a way to figure out which one of these components is bad though. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Computer wont turn on

Just try Process of elimination first, That can tell you the problem about 75% maybe More of the time.
So try different memory stick and processor, MAKE sure all fans and the heat sink is on properly.

Im using my laptop because my desktop wont turn on. Well actually it does but it wont display anything. I installed a evga 9600ggt about 3 weeks ago. I also installed a 500 watt power supply. About a week ago my computer ran into some issues turning on. It was the same as its happening now. Although back when that happened I would just turn it on and off until I got a display. I would get on on about the 6th time i turned it on. Now i dont get it on at all. Any Ideas on what i can do?I would like to be able to turn my desktop on.Also if anyone thinks they may have a solution. I will try to be on the chat for about 30 min after i make this post. I may be on even longer.

Answer:Computer wont turn on

If you could borrow a known working monitor and hook it up on your computer to be able to check that its not your monitor that's haviung the problem.

Ok ill start from the beggining. My computer has always beeped randomly when I turned it on. Sometimes it would be very fast and beep 20 times, sometimes it would be slow and beep under 10 and sometimes not at all. I assume it was trying to tell me something is wrong. So I decided to buy an extra 1 gig of ram and a sata 250gig HDD. I put the 1 gig of ram in and everything works fine but when I pluged my HDD in my computer wouldnt boot because it wouldnt read my IDE HDD. So I open my PC, unplug alot of things and replug them back in. I plug my powercord into the powersupply and see this flash from the back of my PC. And now my PC wont even turn on.

Also a note when replugging everything back in I decided to plug the temp-readers the PC case came with onto the front of my GPU and my HDD. I doubt it would cause this but just in case I figured I would mention it.

So I'm guessing

A) My case died
B) My PSU died
C) My mobo died

How do I figure out what happened?

My mobo

Answer:Computer wont turn on. HELP!

Well I think, you made, however a short-circuit, which destroyed your hardware, first I would say it is your mainboard,
as I had kind of that problem, too, my PSU broke and destroyed the mainboard with it...

Just ask a friend if he can lend you some hardware, then you can look for the broken piece of hardware by trial and error...

Hello. I have a Asus cg series desktop computer. It is a 64 bit, and I am running Windows 7 home premium. I was doing a system update, and after I used it for like a half-hour. Than after that my computer turned off and when I start the computer up it stays on the Asus startup screen. I tried booting my Windows 7 recovery discs and when I try restoring my computer it says that my computer has no partion memory. Idk what that means. Than when I click restore computer to full HD it says error code. No memory. Idk what to do. I think it's the hard drive but I don't know it's a new computer

Answer:please help my computer wont turn on.

Quote:

it says that my computer has no partion .....it's a new computer

No partition means, that the Hard Drive has probably failed. How "New" is this computer? If you just bought it from a store in the last 30 days, you can take it back and get another one.

So i was playing world of warcraft and downloading a torrent last night 3/16/10 3/17/10 i came home during my lunch break to see if my torrent was done and i tried to open wow and the log in screen was lagging it never lags at all so i restarted the computer and the resoultion changed from 1920-1200 to 800-640 so i thought it might be the video card. so i download this random program http://freestone-group.com/video-card-stability-test.htm to test the video card and i ran it and the screen would turn on and off so i left it on, i come back and the computer is completely off. So i check the back of the computer and the green light under the power cord is on. but when i push the on button it turns off along with everything else.
So i tried switching the power supplies and same thing happened. so i checked the vid card but it turned out i have been using the on board video card instead of my own because i rushed to put it together........
But now if i just put the cord in the green light stay on until i push power on the system.
Do you know why that is?

i just bought this system for 15 bucks from a local pawn shop sorta...anyway, it had no hard drive... i put one in and tried to turn it on...all that happend was the front light went on, nothing else. power didnt even go to the hard drive, and the power supply was makin a low noise....and then i tried another power supply, same thing happend...but this time it didnt make a noise...so i tried ANOTHER power supply and the same thing happend...im not sure wats wrong, i dont kno if the motherboard is fried, but i think one of the capacitors is blown, cuz the top of it isnt flat, the top looks round and bloated, can someone help me out?

Answer:i need help i need help i need help..computer just wont turn on...at all.

The top of many capacitors are rounded... what you look for is splits and bulges on the side... or reddish brown powder or dust sprinkled around. But if the capacitors near the cpu are bulging in an uneven way, you have a dead machine.
What you neglected to tell us was the brand and model of computer, or in lieu of that, the brand and number of the motherboard.
Motherboards seldom fail, unless it is an eMachine or Tri-Gem board, but somebody could have become reckless with gaming or whatever, and fried it.
Do some simple things like carefully examine the cables, and the wires between the power switch and the motherboard.
Does the CPU fan look OK? You will get the signs and symptoms you report if the CPU fan is bad, or poorly connected. Look for loose heat sink.
Look very carefully for a rainbow-like look on the mother board... If it has been fried, you will see an uneven color or a rainbow moire pattern sometimes... Look closely at the larger chips. See if any of the tie-downs or clamp-downs have pulled out of the board. Give it the sniff test to see if anything smells burned or strongly odd.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Well i originally posted this in the Asus motherboards support forums but frankly i havent gotten all that much help there i was hoping you guys could give me some more help getting my computer to work and im hoping i dont have to rma some parts but i will if necissary. I troubleshooted myself while waiting for awnsers on the forum so the last post is most up to date (so i suppose you could start there if you wanted although may miss some background information.

Asus forum posts-

conroe e6600
Asus P5b Deluxe
2 x 1gb corsair xms2 ddr 8000
evga gts 8800
gamexstream 700 watt power supply

I had it all put together and when i plugged in the power to the motherboard the light went on. But when i pressed teh power on the case the fans would spin for a second (including the cpu fan) but then would stop. I decided to trouble shoot by taking out components until it was just processor, mb, ram, and case. I even undid many of the screws. I booted it up and voila everything seemed to be working (i dont remember if the cpu fan was spinning). Next i added more screws tested again and worked as far as i could tell (i dont remember if the cpu fan was spinning). Finnaly i added teh vga card and i tried connecting a monitor. I booted it up and get no video. When i am inspecting it running i notice the cpu fan is not spinning. I immidiately turn it off. I dont know why... Read more

Answer:My computer wont turn on :(

Well... I read MOST of that

First question, are you CERTAIN that your motherboard is not shorting out on your case? The motherboard CAN NOT touch the case at all. If it does, your system will not boot. When you screw in the motherboard to the case, there are special "stand off" pins that you are supposed to be using.

This sounds like a high possibility as to what is causing your problems, as you mention screws not being screwed in a few times.

Hello, Im not very good with computers and my home PC is rather slow. I thought i was being clever last night deleting some files that i thought were not used anymore. After doing this and emptying the recycle bin i couldnt connect to the internet. I tried turning off and turning on again but now the computer wont get passed the drive error check. It thinks there is a disk in the cd drive which there isnt. It is making funny banging noises like its trying to load something. It is quite old and i dont expect miricals but i wondered if there is any point trying to save it or should i just throw it away? Thanks in advance for any help or advice anyone can offer.

Do you  have a Windows CD to reinstall? That sounds like a good place to start and would be a great time to check the hardware as well. What computer or motherboard make model, processor, RAM, etc. is involved?

Hey all,

The problem I have is that my computer wont turn on. I have had this problem before but it would only happen once every few weeks or so, I try and turn the computer on but nothing happens. All the other times this has happened I have pressed the power button a few times and then it will turn on, or I have pressed the power button a few times and left it then it will turn on a minute or so later by itself.

Yesterday and today though it has decided to do it again, although yesterday it took about 20 minutes of me pressing the button a few times then leaving it for 5 minutes to come on, and today the same but it just hasnt turned on. There is an LED on the motherboard which lights up all the time even when the computer is off (but not when its unplugged) I think it tells you there is power to the motherboard but I'm not sure. Once the computer is on its fine though, it wont restart or anything.

I have looked on the internet for people with the same sort of problems and the cause for most of them is the power supply, which I think is the same in my case, as I got all new parts for my comp a year ago, except the power supply which I kept and is about 5 or 6 years old.

Does anyone else have any other ideas on what it could be? Or could confirm what I'm thinking? Also if I need to buy a new power supply, should I buy the same one or doesnt it matter?

Thanks for any help

How long have you been running SP3 on that HP.... There are some issues with HP and Compaq Computers operating with SP3, or I should say... failing to operate soon after the SP3 updateIf you want your data and want your system back up and running asap, I'd buy an external HD enclosure, and an extra HD. Install the new HD in your sytsem in place of the old HD. Install clean build to new HD. And place old HD into ext hard drive case, and acces all your data via USB as an external drive. Simplest way to have your data back without taking the chance of losing it all especially since a repair feature will not work. The OS sounds hosed

Anyways I woke up today and tried turn on my computer, it starts to turn on and after about 2 seconds it shuts down(just loses power or something). My comp is running on Windows XP, I'm not too sure about the make (i think it was a custom job), and this is my mother's comp so I don't know too much about this. Apparently this has happened before and to get it to work again they just kept hitting the power button and it started up after about 15 mins. of this. I tried to repeat this but for fear of damaging the computer I decided to not keep trying that. What I have tried was removing and turning off all power to the comp but that honestly didn't do anything. Please help! I don't know what to do!Thanks! ^_^

Answer:Computer wont turn on!

Welcome to puterhope narutoman! Yeah, I would suggest not pressing the power button repeatedly. Do you have access to another power supply that you can try in the computer? Also could you give a list of your computer specs? (go to "start" "run" then type in "dxdiag" and it will give you a list of them) But if you have access to another working power supply, try to replace it and see if this works.

I need help.. i have a computer that turns on to a black screen that gives me the following options on how to turn on the computer:

safe mode
safe w/ networking
safe w/ command prompt
last known good configuration
start windows normally

No matter which one i choose it will load to the windows splash loading screen and go back to this black screen with options.

I think it's a virus. Also the computer never came with one of those recovery disks.

It tried going to F8 when it is loading from one of those options i chose and it would give me an advanced options menu with options:

enable boot logging
enable vga made
directory services restore
debugging

All of those don't work either.

I switched out the harddrive and put another one into that computer and it does not seem to be an issue with other hardware. So there should be a problem with the harddrive and some virus probably.

That's as far as my knowledge goes as to what to do. I would appreciate if anyone can give me any advice. Thanks in advance.

Answer:computer wont turn on

sounds like you need to repair your os.

you'd need to boot to an Windows install cd (2k/xp matching the os on the HD). start a fresh install. it will search for existing OS's. repair the os found on your HD. You'll prolly need a cd key as well. this can sometimes be found on the computer case.

you should run windows update after performing these actions.

still no go, one thing i noticed is when i hooked the power cable up to the back the light on the front turned on before i even hit the power button but nothing else.

is it a dead motherboard or could it be something else

Answer:computer wont turn on at all

So how's your day been so far?

If you try to turn it on if you don't see any lights come on or hear fan or the HD start up then

1/ is the plug outlet supplying power ie is something else working from that plug?

2/ check the fuse in the PC power chord plug

3/ if no joy the power supply, supplying the motherboard needs to be checked with a multimeter.

When it rains it **** pours.

Hey guys, first post to the forum, can't seem to find help anywhere else so i'll try here.

I got a new gfx card for xmas, a 9800GTX+. I plugged it in my old crappy mobo, what make im not sure but a Gigabyte and my computer would alternate between either: turning on for about 10 seconds without posting, screen stays blank, then turning off OR turning on, doesn't post, then does nothing.
Assuming it was just my motherboard, I bought a few upgrades but im still having the same problem except sometimes the light on the monitor, to indicate wether its engaged or not, will light up for 1-5 seconds, then computer turns off again.

THe specs im running at the moment are:

600W Vantec iON2+ PSU (NEW)
ASUS GeForce 9800GTX+ (NEW)
1GB DDR2 Kingston RAM (NEW)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB
Intel P4 3.0ghz (I don't know the exact model)
Gigabyte GA-EG31MF-S2 motherboard (NEW)

I suspect, after upgrading the PSU, mobo and RAM, and still no relief, that either: the cpu is imcompatable with the motherboard OR the psu is not sufficient enough to run my system.

My old PSU was a stock 350W and my old gfx card was a Sapphire Radeon X300.

Any infomation is appricated as this is killing me

Answer:Computer wont turn on.

The suppy certainly lacked there. The 600w is quite adequate while there is one other thing to look at there. Did you plug the power feed into the card?

The newer high end models require the 6pin 12v feed to power the larger vpus seen on them. If you forgot to plug that in... oops! you won't get very far.

Hey,
I've had this issue in the past and it turned out to be my ram. the computer did the beep thing when i tried turning it on and i replaced the ram, and bingo no problem. Now I tried turning it on and nothing, i hear the fans getting up to speed, then very anti-climactic, nothing. any ideas? i realize it could be anything. what are the symptoms of a blown cpu? i'd love some advice. thanks in advance.

Answer:Out of no where computer wont turn on!

I take it by "nothing" you mean the system stays on but nothing appears on your monitor? You are right in that the problem could be many things. However, power supply would be the first thing on the list and the CPU the last.

Me and a buddy of mine, just got done building a pentium 4 from scratch. We were able to get it going and running fine. Then we decieded to install all the other goodies. We then started to have problems. This computer consist of 1.8 gig pentium 4, 40 gig hard drive, lg dvd/cdrw drive, creative cdrom, and a creative soundblaster audigy platinum, which is where we came up with problems. We have a 400 watt power supply. That is what I think the problem is, but want to be for sure. The problem in general is we try to turn it on, and it starts to turn on, but then it just shuts off, like a breaker was being hit, or the power was not being routed right. Talked to another buddy who said to erase the cmos, or it could be electrostatic discharge on the processor. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Have you reseated the processor, make sure the processor fan is connected and starting. check for loose cables, cables reversed on the ide's. If that doesn't do it then try the following.

pull all the extras out except the cpu, memory, processor, floppy, vid card, and hard drive. Will if boot now, if not, remove the hard drive and use a boot disk, will it boot now.

Alright well i bought this older computer off of a friend for 10 bucks thinking it would be a good fix up project.Well it is not so easy, the damn thing wont power on.He says it was working fine then suddenly it would not power on.This computer was not a victim of power surges or lightening storms as far as i know, and the mainboard looks to be in good shape..(no burns no blown compacitors etc....)

I've tried different memory modules in different slots several times, disconnecting drives one by one and both IDE channel cords as well.Tried clearing CMOS and removing/putting back the battery. So this has lead me to beleive that either the PSU is dead or the power switch somehow got ****ed (not switch on PSU, switch that connects from mobo to case) I don't know how to tell if the PSU is dead, usually i'll plug in a network cord into the LAN port to see if it lights up,but this computer does not have onboard LAN nor do i have a LAN card.I've tried putting the power switch in a bunch of different pin combinations with no luck. But when i plug in the main power cord (from wall to PSU) lights will flicker in my room,as this is normal in my experience with WORKING PSU's so....i'm stumped.

If the PSU isn't ****ed,is there any other way to power it on manually if the case's power switch or pins on the mobo is the culprit?

Computer is a Emachines W1500,Motherboard manual:http://tinyurl.com/b9xmy

Thanks.

Answer:Computer wont turn on.

First get an electrican to fix your house wiring, lol. You are getting dirty power. Second try a different known working psu in the computer after putting the jumpers on the mobo back to their original settings. Third is the mobo, ram or hard drive may be bad as well as the vid card if it has one but most likely it has on board video.

My computer is a custom built, nearly brand new machine. I've had it working perfectly since Christmas, with only minor setbacks.

Here's some info.

I'm using Windows XP home edition, so it's not an outdated operating system
I have at least 5 fans in my computer, so I don't think it overheated
I haven't had any problems up until today
My computer was working fine all day, until it suddenly started to restart at random times. It did it once, and I was fine for about an hour. Then, it did it again, and I was fine for half an hour, the time kept decreasing until finally, my computer just stopped turning on. I have a huge report that I need to get off of there that I need by tuesday, so I don't have a ton of time.
I have Norton Anti-Virus on my computer, and I'm pretty careful about what I download, which isn't much, when I download something.
I was playing games on it earlier, and then stopped, and it didn't start restarting until I got into microsoft word.
I have nothing on my computer that anyone would want to steal, so I don't know why someone would hack into it.
I haven't installed anything new on it for a long time.
I don't even know what could be the problem!!!
If I could get some help as soon as possible, that would be really great.

Can anyone tell me why a computer would not turn on. The mouse and the keyboard both light up but the computer does nothing. I found your site while looking for an answer to my question. I know that is next to no information but I am at work and the computer is at home. EricS

Answer:Computer Wont Turn On

When you get home, post the computer make and model, components, what happened prior to this, etc.Bad power supply is a possibility, as well as poorly seated components. Has it been moved or monkeyed with?Again, more details are required for a solution.

So I went into my BIOS to overclock my processor. I overclocked it from 3.4ghz to 3.6ghz I saved the changes and it restarted the computer. Everything turned on, CPU fan is running too. But nothing comes on screen and the startup beep isn't beeping. I have a biostar a880g+ with a Phenom II 965 BE

Answer:help! computer wont turn on

Reset your BIOS settings to defaults. Do this by turning off the computer, unplug it from power, and press the power button a few times to drain any remaining power. Then on your motherboard, remove the silver coin battery for about 15 seconds. Place it back in, plug your computer back in, and turn it back on.

Please helpSometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then use this troubleshooting document to see if you can resolve the problem on your own.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds); (if the computer doesn't power on, move to the next step)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

Computer sometimes turn on but rarely. When it doesnt turn on nothing happens. Fans dont spin and no noise etc. I think it is probably a Power supply problem because I hear a buzzing noise from it when my computer cant turn on. When there is no buzzing noise my computer can turn on. Also I have test the power supply on another computer and it works prefectly but that computer is older so it needs less power to run.Its not motherboard problem i dont think because it can turn on sometimes and the motherboard runs fine when it does turn on.

Answer:Computer wont turn on

Check all connections first if good i would start with swapping out power supply first.

Hello everyone, thank you in advance for helping me out here.

My emachine 1.7 Celeron machine suddenly did not turn on Tuesday morning and it had just been turned off on Friday night in working order. Pulling the powercord from the machine case, my friend said that he thought he saw an electrical arc. Therefore I think, "bye-bye Power Supply".

Pulling this computer in elsewhere yields nothing....dead! Since this computer is used as a workstation in my business, I replaced it with a new computer. That station is up and running and now I have a computer I need to get up and running to use as a spare or to take the HD out and install it in another computer to retreive data.

My inclination is to replace the Power Supply first. Emachine website has replacement PS for each machine. Should I purchase from them or go to my local computer store and get an better than stock one. Any ideas here would be great.

If I fail I will then remove the HD and move on to retrieve data and use the HD on another computer for data storage etc.

What do you guys think?

Thanks again
Julio

Answer:Computer Wont turn on

If I were you I would call up eMachine's techinical support and ask if your model PC uses a standard ATX power supply. If the answer is yes then go to the store and buy a brand name PS like Enlight or Antec...They are much more reliable and much more powerful in terms of wattage than the PS they will put in it. You'll probably also end up saving money if eMachines charges for hardware service.

Answer:Grr HELP!! My computer wont turn OFF

Cant shutdown?
When the power scheme is causing the problem:
In Windows XP, the "Always On" Power Scheme can cause some computers to hang at shutdown. To correct this setting, follow the steps below:
1. From the Start menu >Control Panel. Click Switch to Classic View.
2. Double-click Power Options. From the Power Schemes tab, in the "Power schemes" section, select Home/Office Desk or something other than always on.
3. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Shutdown hangs on "Saving your Settings" or "Windows is Shutting Down"

During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the “saving your settings” screen. During such a hang, there is no response to Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. The problem may be intermittent.

As a workaround you can attempt to disable the Windows Welcome Screen. This however, may not work in some cases.

System or hard drive corruption

1. Click Start > Run > Type cmd
2. At the Comand Prompt Windows type chkdsk /f.
3. If asked to schedule at reboot hit "Y" and hit "ENTER"
4. Reboot.

Power supply

1. The only remedy for a dud PSU is a new one. If you suspect this is the problem have it changed with a new one.

So I just got all the parts for my first computer and I busily put it together and it worked at first, but then when I was installing windows with my friends the computer suddenly turned off. The room began to smell like smoke and my friend, who was there with me, touched the cpu fan and burned his hand. I called the people at AMD and got a replacement cpu and fan and once again I was happy. I put them in and alas it did not turn on. When i press the power button very slowly the cpu fan spins about 10 rotations and stops. I know the power supply works because I tested it. My question is what could be the problem.

Answer:My computer wont turn on

Well, the best bet is still the power supply. How did you test the power supply? Just making sure it can turn it's own fan doesn't count as testing. Since many broken and completely useless power supplies can do that.

Alternativly it could be the motherboard, although if all these pieces are new it's not likely. If it's not the power supply it's more likely that it's something you've got hooked up wrong then anything else.

Although a problem like this is almost always PS related. It may have something with you having set the 230/115 switch on the power supply incorrectly too.

my computer wont turn on after i think too many viruses due to adult videos.

is there any way i can fix this without getting my parents involved ?????

Answer:Computer Wont Turn On

Oh boy! How far will it get before it shuts down? If it won't come on at all it's not a software but a hardware issue. If it's a hardware issue check the power cord at the case and at the wall. Sounds simple but a lot of the time the simple answer is the right answer. Also the switch on the power strip.

Hi I have a HP m640n series computer and today i went to turn it on but when i pressed the button nothing happened. I noticed that the green light on the back of the power supply that is usually turned on when it is plugged in was not lit up. I figured that i need a new psu. Does anyone else know anything else that cuold be wrong with my computer?

Answer:Computer Wont turn on

The power cord can become lose from the computer, on PC's it has to be pushed in really hard. Also confirm the plug in the wall is OK (plus confirm that outlet is working too - ie switchboard relay may be off)

What are your system specs? I think that is needed before any diagnosis can really be made.

So I woke up this morning and pressed the power button on my computer, and absolutely nothing happened.
I thought the PSU might have gotten up plugged, but the switch lights up red when it is switched on, and it was lit. So the PSU is getting power from the wall socket. I then thought that maybe something else inside the PSU may have gone bad. I tested it by turning it on by shorting the power on and ground pins on the 24 pin connector, and sure enough it starts up. I tested all the voltages with a multimeter and they were all fine. I then thought that the power switch may have gone bad, so i tried shorting the power switch pins on the motherboard with a jumper, and it would not turn on. Is this enough to conclude that my motherboard has gone bad? Is there any other tests I should do?

The only way I can get it to turn off is to hard power off(Hold down button) twice.
I have checked all BIOS setting and turned off restart on BSOD I just can't seem to get it to stop restarting. When I Shut down it does actually turn off but then right back on which is what makes me think its a BIOS setting or something.

Full Specs in sig.

Thank you for any help,

Answer:my computer wont turn off.

If this is a new build the first thing I would recheck is to make sure the front I/O panel header is connected properly. If that doesn't work, try flashing your bios to a newer version. Finally, are you sure your not pressing the "sleep" button,on the start menu, instead of shut down?

Hey well i bought a custom computer from the local shop here and i decided to buy a new case for it. I switched everything to the new case that i bought and now the computer wont turn on. Everything looks like its plugged in from reading the motherboards manual. Before switching cases, everything was working perfect. Now when i try to press the button to turn the computer on, it wont turn on. But when i put it to ON position in back of the computer case the fan on the power supply & cpu will turn on and off. The computer just wont turn on. Whats is the problem here.

Here are the specs:

Intel P4 3.2GHZ
Intel D915GAG Motherboard
1.024 GB of RAM
550 W Poaer Supply
160GB Hard Drive

Answer:New Computer Wont Turn on

Sounds like the motherboard could be shorting out on the case, make sure the standoffs are set up correctly and no metal is touching the case. There is a slight chance that the PSU has failed but this is unlikely. Is the PSU Generic, it probably isnt because of the high wattage rating but is it an Antec, Thermaltake or OCZ or brand name like that?
