I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a customer's Satellite L305D S5895 laptop. This was shipped to me by the customer who tried to install Windows XP Pro, Vista and none would install. He said he tried all installation CDs he had and finally gave up on it and shipped it to me.

When I got it the partition were deleted so I tried to install Win 7 and when I do doing a custom install I get an error saying the hard drive can't be formatted on disk 0 or it will give an error that no hard drives were found.

I reset the bios to default and no matter what I do it won't format or find the harddrive. I was going to upgrade the bios but the only way I found to upgrade the bios is after windows is installed. There is no way to make changes to the bios for settings that would have to do with the hard drive. This has a Toshiba MK2546GSX (S1) hard drive.

When installing Win 7 I get the normal windows, "windows is starting", "Select Language", "Select System", "Type of install", "Custom Install", "Delete partitions", "New Partitions", "Format", then the error message "Windows cannot format a partition on disk 0. Error: 0x80070057"

This happens regardless what system I try to install. I've tried two different versions of XP, one of Vista and 3 Win 7 and each time a different install CD.

I have a very straightforward question: I am running WinXP Pro on my computer and I just got an external USB hard-drive to back up my data before I upgrade to VISTA.

My internal hard drive is NTFS file system, and the external drive is FAT32. My data backed-up perfectly.

However, I understand that VISTA is NTFS only (for the drive that it's installed on, which in my case will be the internal drive). I will be installing the VISTA OS on the internal drive, and using the external drive solely for backing up data.

I don't want to back up my data externally, upgrade my PC to VISTA, and then discover that I can't access the data on the external drive.

Here's my only question: will VISTA work with a FAT32 external drive, or do I have to convert that external drive to NTFS *before* I attempt to connect it to VISTA?

awaiting your replies - I'll appreciate all the help I can get!

Hey Guys,

I have a netbook which I want to recycle however it has been used for business purposes and I want to properly format the drive. The issue I have is that it does not have a CD drive nor does it have a working screen. I have connected the hard drive to external display and manually deleted all files from the computer but I know this is not really 'deleting' anything.

How can I format the drive from within Windows? Unfortunately I cannot get bios to display on the external display so I can not do anything from DOS or Bios simply because I can't see anything!

My latest attempt has been to use Active KillDisk to create a bootable USB however this is when I ran into the issue of the Bios and DOS not displaying, it will only display once windows has been loaded.

Any ideas?

I have an Dell desktop with a 1tb HDD running Win 10, am looking to install an SDD then migrate over to this drive leaving the 1tb HDD just for my files.
My 1st question is; I have 4 sata slots on the motherboard 1 = 1tb HDD, 2 = free, 3 = DVD, 4 = free. Have read somewhere always use the lowest number slot for an SSD & if that is so do I put the SDD sata cable into slot 1 & HDD into slot 2
when I first install the SDD drive or change them later after I have cloned the HDD ?
As I am going to use my 1tb HDD just for my file storage will I be albe to do a full fomat on the HDD ie clean all partitions.
Many thanks

Answer:Format main hard drive. Want to install SDD then migrate to this drive

Hi. . .
I would suggest that you install Windows onto the SSD without the HDD being connected.
After Windows 10 is installed on the SSD, then reconnect the HDD and use Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) to format the HDD in NTFS format.
Doing the installation this way assures that no boot related files are written to the HDD during Windows install onto the SSD.

Hi. My external hard-drive stopped working yesterday. This is what's happening:

I plug it in as usual, then it says "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?".
I'm thinking it's more than likely an issue of having pulled out the usb cable without clicking 'safely remove'.

Yesterday I actually got it working again briefly by typing "chkdsk F: /R" into command prompt. Now when I do that it doesn't work, it says "The type of the file system is NTFS. Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted." And when I double click on F: drive in my computer it says "F:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable".

Are there any other options besides using some sort of data recovery tool (I'd rather not do this just because it takes a long time)?

The other day i went to format a partition(called drive D) of a hard drive in dos mode. Just after i pressed enter for the format to begin i relised that in dos my partitioned drive D was actually called drive G and my other hard drive which was drive E was called D, so I was actually formatting drive E. I quickly pressed restart and once in windows tried accessing drive E but it wouldnt let me because it sais it needs to be formatted because it hasnt got a File System. Ive used getdataback to access it but I want to know if there is a way to give the drive a file system name without actually formatting it?

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

I need to format my hard drive [D & C drive]

so i wanna know Will format the hard drive [D & C drive], delete the all file

will be deleted?

i already make a back up to all my Document project [ on D drive as i shown above] but to be honest, i dont want the process to delete my " Program Files" folder [ C:\Program Files]& my Document project [ on D:drive]........

Answer:Will format the hard drive [D & C drive], delete the all file in it?

Formatting a drive or partition will completly wipe it, delete everything.

Take note you will be unable to format a drive with Windows on it if you are using that installation, you need to use a boot disk. If using dual boot you can format one Windows drive from the other.

I wish to format an external Hard Drive for Windows 10 and then install the Drive into my Laptop and load Windows 10 from the DVD I created from the ISO file.
My reason for doing this is to get a completely clean install, as every other time I have tried I end up with a poorly function Windows 10 PC and some of the old information such as Wall Paper, Network setting, Home Group etcetera are still set up in the New "clean" installation which I believe are causing the very slow Boot up along with other problems. Each time in the past I have agreed to "keep nothing" but that does not seem to work!

Answer:Format external Hard Drive as a boot drive

plug into another PC using a usb caddy
the drive will appear in disk management either right click and select format (do not do a quick format) or you could use command prompt (admin) and run diskpart to remove all partitions and make just one partition on the drive before formatting.
refit in the laptop
ensure DVD is set as first boot device
insert DVD and and press any key to boot from he windows iso (DVD must be bootable made using windows media creation tool for w 10).
follow the prompts to install windows (you cannot install windows onto the drive while it is in the us caddy on the other PC).

Hi everyone,

I recently accidentally formatted a hard drive. So, I quickly install a file recovery software (EaseUS Data Recovery). Then the result shows that most of SWF files are big in size. I think that lots of my files have been converted or combine with other files. So, how do I recover my files?

Answer:File format changed into other format after format a hard drive

This may not be the best answer, but I would recover the files first. That is you biggest concern right now. Then try to see what you need to do to fix them.

I have a second hard drive, which I recovered a deleted file into. I went into the find the recovered file, but it wasn't there, even though it used up a few gigabytes of space. I'm now frustrated, and I want to format the drive. It kept saying "being used by another process" or something like that, anyways, I went into the hard drive and deleted everything myself. The hard drive is now empty, but it still has about 16gigs of space being used, even though the drive is completely empty.

The software I used to recover my file was "Recuva". I uninstalled it, so it shouldn't be interfering with the formatting. Is there anyway to force format the hard drive???

Please help!

Thank you.

Answer:Cannot Format D-Drive (2nd hard drive)

Use your Windows install disc. When it gets to the point where it ask you where you want to install Win 7 indicate that drive. Then format the disc. Now exit the installation. If you cannot get that one to work then attempt it with a XP installation disc.

Another way is to go to your Control Panel and choice Administration Tools then go to Computer Management. From there go to Disk management. Once there right click on the Drive then click on Delete Volume. Once that is done, reformat. Hope this helps.

If your drives are already FAT you can use the convert command to turn them into NTFS partitions without loosing any data.

Can someone please tell me how to reformat my hard drive? I'm trying to load XP Pro but when I put the disc in it tells me that the version on my computer is newer than the one I'm trying to put in so it can't install it. So how do I format from XP Home edition?

Answer:Need to format hard drive

You need to boot from the XP CD . . not from the hard drive . . to do that, enter BIOS ( Setup ) and set the first boot device as CD/ROM. Put your XP Disc in the drive and disconnect all external peripherals except the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and be sure those are not USB, or wireless. Any internal USB card should also be removed.

Once you set your BIOS to boot first from cd . . when it restarts you will see a black screen with a prompt "Press any key to boot from CD" . . do that and you will be able to delete partitions and recreate the ones you want and proceed to formating and installing XP

That message can pass quickly, so have a finger on the keyboard when you boot. This will delete all data on the drive so be sure you have your important data backed up.

This is a site that walks you thru a simulated XP installation:
http://www.echoproject.net/en/software/catalog.html

These are good guides to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print one for reference during the install.

http://www.socrtwo.info/cleanxpinstall.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home_install_-_graphic.htm

You may have to reload drivers (Chipset first) and applications, If your XP installation disc does not include SP2, after the installation, you will need to download and install SP-2, while windows is clean. Prior to connecting to the internet be sure you enable the XP firewall.

Question: Hard Drive Format

Hi everyone, this may seem like an idiotic posting, but here it goes: Basically what has happened is this. I have 4 hard drives hooked up to an IT7-MAX2 V2 with the latest BIOS revision, and everything was going great. I am running XP Pro, and every once in awhile I would get this weird "Delayed Write Failed" message. So, after lookin around, I found some tweaks in the registry to allow more cache for system pages. This did not really work. For now one of my hard drives (a Seagate 160 GB) is now showing up in RAW format and I cannot format it. Is all hope lost here? Please advise, anyone. Thanks in advance. Regards, Lukie45.

Answer:Hard Drive Format

Download the latest Seagate Utilities/Diagnostic tools. If the drive checks out ok then use the latest MaxBlast to write zeros to your HHD.

Whenever I type cd c: end press enter I get the following error: invalid driver specification

Answer:How to format a Hard Drive?

click here to get instructions on how to format a drive.Without a floppy drive to boot from, and run the format program from, how are you going to get it to format? the format program has to be somwhere, and if you blank the HDD, you will erase the format prog. A bit like trying to 'raise oneself by ones own boot laces' me-thinks.But once you have formated'd it? What do you want a pc with no software on for? It won't do a lot. just sit there saying 'c:' and making a nice door stop/paper weight.without any way of putting programs on, like a floppy or CD, how will you get it to do what you do want to use it for? Just asking. No malice. if i'm wronger than wrong can be, and dumber than a door stop say.

I assume you have a Win XP disk - this will autorun and will allow you to format & install a fresh OS.If not, then you should have a recovery disk from your PC manufacturer and this will do the same thing. If you don't have a restore disk or a WinXP disk, then you will not be able to reinstall Windows after formatting.Just a word of caution, make sure you backup all your important files & have all the program disks you want to re-install BEFORE going ahead as this will save a lot of time [& frustration] later.HTHPaul

I have removed a 2.5" HDD from a Creative MP3 player that I no longer require. I intend to use it as an external usb 2.0 disk drive using a 'Cooldisk' kit purchased on click here. However, I cannot reformat the drive. I have tried both disk management in windows XP and partition magic. Both options report errors during formatting and allocating drive letters. Partition magic reports a 'BAD' partition and fails to do anything with it. This is all probably due to the type of filing system or possible root directories used by the creative jukebox player.......Any suggestions. Incidentally, I am using a 3.5' to 2.5' adaptor to connect the drive to a vacant IDE connection on my P.C.

You could try and use something like Seagate DiscWizard and see if it recognizes the drive. If you know the manufacturer, they may have their own software that will do a more effective job.If so, use the option to write zero's to the drive, which will effectively wipe it clean and then try a format in your chosen file type.

Hard Drive Format Help

I have an 80gb IDE Maxtor and a 30GB IDE WD. I am in storage trouble so I pulled them from the closet.

The 30g has a Linux os on it and runs fine I just want to clear it to dump files on

The 80gb is empty
I have partition magic and I keep getting an error on BOTH drives when I try to format saying "Bad partition Error 100"

I googled it and it says to make a Boot disk and FDISK /MBR the drive. So I did.

It didn't seem to do anything. So I just want to format my **** hard drives FORMAT D: I mean where have those days gone?

I also tried just formatting from he XP cd but the 80g drive now shows up as MAXTOR ROMULUS in the bios and at 0 bytes so XP doesnt see the HD. Prolly because of the deletion of the MBR i dunno. the 30gig boots up to linux just fine so I know it works, but in Xp setup it just freezes when inspecting hardware, prolly due to the ext3 partition.

Someone please help me out This partition magic program seems to be ruining my tables and drives. I just want an empty HD, that shows up in XP to dump files on.

Question: Format Hard Drive

My C: drive is in the "red" and I was told that I need to format it and reinstall Windows Vista. I can't seem to find the Vista Installation Disc. I don't remembering getting one when I purchased the laptop; I have a Dell Insprion 1520.

How do I get this disc?

Also, do I need to format just the c: drive or the d: drive also?

Answer:Format Hard Drive

If the OS came preinstalled, you can get one at cost. In lieu of that most computers have a recovery partition that will restore to factory specs. Usually an f key at boot.
You can find out how from your manual or online.
Factory specs is just like a new install.

I have been trying to format my hard drive, but to no avial. I have changed the Bios setting to boot from CD/floopy but it keeps loading windows. I have a CD boot disk and I also have down load the 6 floopy disk for XP home serive pack 2. Can any one give me any adive to what to do?

Answer:Format Hard Drive

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

With your Windows cd in your drive, go into bios and set the boot priority to floppy/cd/hdd Now make sure you Save and exit bios, usually by pressing the F10 key. Although it may be different with your bios.

Hopefully during boot up, it should ask you to press any key to boot from cd.

Hi DOUGIET. I just don't understand why computer builders don't fit floppy drives - except for laptops. If you have the space for one, then you can get a floppy drive for 5 from EBuyer click here, or about 10 from your local computer store.

Be sure you get the jumpers right . . if the original is jumpered as Master, jumper this one as Slave . . if the original is Jumperd as Cable Select, jumper this one as Cable Select also.

hi can any1 help with this one?

got a friends 30gig h/d that's completely ruined (everything was corrupt due to a virus) and now when I begin setup from boot floppies etc I get to the formatting and it won't format. It says something about the drive being damaged and cannot be formatted. I've tried NTFS and NTFS quick and FAT won't work either! Any ideas, or has it completely had it?

Answer:hard drive won't format!!

You might need to re-partition it first -- especially if the partition tables got messed with by whatever bit the system.

Let us know what happens with the formatting after you've re-partitioned the drive.

If the partitioning software won't work either, I'd begin to suspect a hardware problem of some kind.

Answer:Need help to format hard drive

If you have a proper XP CD, boot from that and follow the instructions. If you don't have the proper XP CD, boot from a Win98se floppy disk, choose "Start without CD-ROM support" and at the A:\> prompt type "format c" (without the quote marks).

Ok this is getting just a little out of hand. Just when I fix one problem, another comes. Well now what happened is I had just finished installing windows, and I was getting some error message about lsass.exe with error status code 128 and a message that windows 2000 will shut down and restart in a minute, and then my machine does restart after a minute. I saw a page on microsoft.com that says that bug is fixed with service pack 4. But in the process of downloading it everytime I would get the message and my computer would shut down before I could get the update finished. So after about the 4th or 5th time of this happening my computer wouldn't boot up, and just went in circles from the Bios screen to the windows start up screen, then reboot and go around in that loop over and over.... Then I tried to format the drive and it came up with the message : checking existing disk format. Invalid device parameters from device driver. Then goes back to the E:\ promt. I tried using FDISK and deleting the primary partition, and creating it again, and that didn't work. Now I've kind of been sitting here stumpted as to what to do?? Any idea's?

Answer:Cant Format my hard drive.?.?.?.?.?

Go get a linux cd iso disk ( slackware.com would prob be the best)
boot that, watch the startup for your hard drive, if it goes too fast use the command:
dmesg | more
to see the output again.
Once you know your hard drive assignment then run the command:
cfdisk /dev/hdx
where hdx matches your hard drive (usually /dev/hda)
That program has a gui (tho be it clunky) it may fix your problem.
But kinda sounds like a hard drive or cable falure (or if your lucky just a virus).

This is exactly what I get when I'm using the command prompt.
Format :c
Type of fyle system is NTFS
Enter current volume label for drive c: xxxxxxxxxx
Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another proccess
Format may run if this volume is dismounted first
All open handles to this volume would then be invalid
would you like to force a dismount on this volume? Yes
Cannot lock the drive the volume is still in use

Sounds to me like you are trying to format the partition that you have actually booted into!
Are you sure about which partition you need to format? Sounds like you may end up loosing everything if you get it wrong....
Once you've sure about the above, you'll need to boot of a dos bootdisk and run from the command prompt.

My computer just started getting the BSOD a couple days ago and it'd come up nearly every time I'd restart.
Then nearly all my games, that I was always able to play, started telling me that I don't have DirectX.
I tried to reformat my hard drive, and after I booted up for the first time after installing the Windows updates, I got a BSOD telling me
"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and something about "NVSTOR.SYS."
I was never able to get back to the desktop after that screen and I couldn't even boot in Safe Mode.
So I did a search and read something about Vista automatically updating the Nvidia drivers can cause that kind of screen.

I reformatted again and installed all my updates besides the Nvidia ones; but before I restarted I also installed the newest driver for my graphics card that I just got from the Nvidia website.
I couldn't even finish installing the driver before I got a new, special BSOD.
Now my monitor just goes black after the bios screen. I tried to format again, but I can only get to the first part of the installation disk. It won't even load the part where I type in my product key, it just sits at "Please Wait" for hours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, I have a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop. Recently, my computer has encountered some sort of hard drive issue. It started with the constant windows repair loop (yes, I tried all the solutions to fix this) and we found out it was an issue with my C drive. Anyways, I can't boot my computer, nor can I access safe mode. It tells me I need a windows repair disk.

I enter one that I created with my mother's computer and it runs. But, it tells me that my computer is missing drivers.

Anyhow, I don't have any sort of repair disk because the computer I got was refurbished from Microcenter and didn't come with any sort of disk. I've the computer for just over a year now and have had no issues with it until Sunday.

Is there a way that I can format my C drive without actually being able to boot windows? I can access the C drive from the repair disk and it tells me "you must format this disk to use it," I press "format" and it tells me that this disk cannot be formated because it may be disconnected or in read only mode. I went ahead and reconnected the wires from the hard drive to the C drive to see if that was the issue, same problem.

Anyways, how can I format my C drive?

Answer:Format Hard Drive...

Hello Jacob,

If you like, you could download a Windows 7 ISO file for your edition from the link below from any computer to create a bootable Windows 7 installation DVD/USB from the ISO file.Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links
Afterwards, you could boot from the installation DVD/USB to do a clean install of Windows 7. Be sure that you have your product key written down first. You'll need it to activate the clean install with.Clean Install Windows 7

Hope this helps,

I recently installed a new harddrive. I copied my old one over to it. The new one is currently the Master drive and the old one is the slave. Is it OK for me to erase the old one now? So, will windows run OK without my original copy in the computer?

If you ever end up having to repair or re-format your main drive, the worst that would happen is you'd have to re-activate XP. (either by internet or telephone)

I changed a lot of components in my system, and had to re-activate. Was no big deal.

Hi, I recently upgraded and moved the OS to a new drive. I want to format the old OS drive (now D drive). How would I go about doing this? I know you can't format a bootable drive too

Any help?

Thanks!

Answer:Format old OS hard drive

Make sure the drive is connected to your computer (internal drive should be, external drive needs to be plugged in.) Then click Start > Computer and find the drive in the list of drives. Ensure any data on the drive that you wish to keep has been copied to another drive, as formatting will remove all data. Right-click on the drive's icon and select the "Format..." option to bring up the Format window.

Select the required file system (you'll probably want to stay with NTFS) and give the drive a new name (called a "Volume label"). If you just want to erase a drive that has already been formatted, consider using the "Quick Format" option; otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click "Start" to begin the formatting process. A full format could take several hours.

Answer:Format Hard Drive

Erichan:

What you are talking about is about as fun as bypass surgery.
But, like that surgery, sometimes it's necessary.

If I were going to format my Hard Drive, here is what I would do.

1. Buy an external HD that connects to my PC via USB (external HDs are cheaper than many application programs).

2. Put a boot-up floppy into the A drive and boot up to that disk.

3. At the prompt would type the format command (A:\>format c:\)

4. Pray that I have successfully backed up everything.

The first time I performed that surgery, I forgot that although my own files were backed up, there were many many files that had been downloaded to make defective programs work, or updated drivers for devices (scanners, camera, printer, graphics adapter, modem, etc.) that I lost. The recovery time was not hours, but days.

Consider those things as you have your first cup of coffee this morning.

Cordially,
Cronista

Are you trying to mount the iso in windows, and then trying to format that partition?

It might be easier if you burned the iso (not the seperate files) to dvd, then install fro there.

Have you used the WD diagnostic app to zero fill the drive? If not, then do so and reattempt the format. You download this from the WD site.

Note it will take quite a while to zero fill the drive; probably at least 1hr.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit, dual boot with Windows 8. Windows 7 is my my main OS and I setup with Windows 8 as dual boot. I no longer want Windows 8 or to dual boot. I went into msconfig, boot, removed Windows 8 from boot, left windows 7 as default. I tried to reformat the second drive, got message "Windows unable to complete format". I than changed the Drive Letter from J to S and tried to format again, got same message. What am I doing wrong or am I forgetting something. I am also including a screenshot of my Disk Manager.

Answer:Format second hard drive

There are system files on the new volume and it is marked active. It has to be marked inactive before windows will let you format it. And you have to have a windows 7 installation dvd or a startup repair disc to run startup repair once you format the new volume. Make a system repair disc from windows 7 now, if you don`t have a W7 install DVD.

Partition - Mark as Inactive

System Repair Disc - Create

Partition - Mark as Active

A better ( well different ) way to do the dual install would have been to unplug all other hard drives , then installed 8. You could then choose which operating system to boot with the bios.

Did you discover that windows 8 is terrible and not worth the effort ?

I have recently bought a new PC, and need to format and re-install Windows ME, due to problems, on my old Mesh PC.I have the CD for ME and all the drivers, but how do I start the formatting process. The computer is currently running on XP, but it turns out the Windows XP CD I purchased is in fact a 'moody' copy.As the computer was originally supplied with ME, I want to restore it to the original setup.Any advice greatly apreciatedCheers

Answer:How to format a hard drive without CD

It is possible, since you can download Windows 7 legally from here. You must, however, have a valid product key to enable the download. Is this a pre-built or custom-built PC? Bear in mind, you'd be better off sourcing drivers to re-install before you re-format.
