External Hard Drive don't show up and also create's other malfunctions

Question: External Hard Drive don't show up and also create's other malfunctions

First of, i want to apologize if this post or the title isn't understandable or logic, my first language isn't English and the Spanish forum's aren't responding.Anyway, i have an WD Elements 1048 with 2 TB since almost 2 years (with an USB 3.0) , it worked perfectly until on a vacation trip i connected it on a TV and it didn't show up. Back at home i tried to connect it to my computer (ACER Aspire X3990 with Windows 7, with Intel Core i3 2100, @ 3.10 GHz, 4GB Memory (RAM), using Avast and Malwarebytes) and it also didn't appear (2-3 weeks ago). Here are something's that i already tried and observed while trying:-When i plug it in it make's the sound that it has been connected and also the light on the HD goes on. It also appear's on the eject list but when i try to eject it, it only tell's me that it isn't able to do so. -It also doesn't appear's on disk management or Device Manager. I think at one point it did appear on devmgmt and i uninstalled it (because i still couldn't access it. Whenever i clicked on it, it just opened very slowly until it told me that there was an error), but it didn't re-appear since then. I also did a troubleshooting on safe mode and i restore my computer and it still didn't work. I did notice that my memory does disappear like crazy when i connect it, and i guess that's happening because of the computer creating new restore point's every time that i connect it? Could my HD have a virus or something like that? -I also did a check on WD data lifeguard and everything did appear as okay. -Whenever i unplug it, my computer tell's me that i have to format the disk before i can use it and when i plug it in again and try it, it tells me that window's cant do it.Another strange thing is that when i plug my external Hard drive in, the computer start to get slower and my internet after a minute stop working. It happens every time, normally my internet work's perfectly but it just kind of stop's working whenever my hard drive is plugged in (?)-No reaction from avast or malwarebytes- I didn't try to connect it to another computer, that's the only thing left to do, and none of my friend's had have the time to help meApart from that i really tried everything and i don't know what else i can do on my own to fix it. I have no problem with losing memory aso. i just want to rescue what's left of this external hdI hope that this text/post is understandable, i tried my best to tell all of the detail's I hope somebody can help me with this issue. thank you in advance and greetings from chile

Preferred Solution: External Hard Drive don't show up and also create's other malfunctions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hola Amigo,Let me try to help you. If you don't know the exact English word, go ahead and stick in the Spanish word that make sense to you some of us here are bilingual and we will try to understand. Now in your case it would seem that the hard drive has been damaged when you tried to use it on a TV set.If you have important data on the hard drive, you will have to send it to a special company that knows how to recover data from a damaged hard drive.I think the hard drive is taking too much power from your computer and causing your computer cannot work reliably.Perhaps you know somebody that has a USB hub with power. A USB hub with power can be used to power a device that's taking too much power from the computer. However, I don't think that will cure your problem. I think the hard drive has been damaged to the extent that you will not be able to read the data off of it. The mechanical part of the hard drive, the disc and the motor, probably will work okay. But it's the electronic assembly that has been damaged. It is possible to get a replacement for the electronic assembly and replace it yourself. But this may be more than what you are accustomed to do.By the way, in what part of the world do you live? In some areas the cost of repair is actually lower than it would be here in the United States. Here in the United States is more economical to just buy a new portable hard drive.Of course, you may have data on the hard drive that you wish to recover. That may be difficult or even impossible to do, depending on how much damage was done. I suspect the data is still there but cannot be read because of the damage done to the electronics. That is the best I can say.Eso is todo lo que puedo decirle.

Hello everybody,

I am using an asus X52JE with windows home premium *64bit. I have an external hard drive (Lacie, 1TB) that is not recognised by this computer but works perfectly on others. I have checked every other usb port, and used another usb key that my computer recognised (so my usb ports work).

The hard drive does not appear on device manager AND on devices and printers, I can not see it anywhere, but I can hear it "run". It has no on/off button.

Could someone help me?

Thank you

PS, I have already tried this :

1. Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
2. Right mouse click on My Computer
3. Left click on Manage
4. Left click on Device Manager
5. Expand the USB list
6. Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive ==> where is it supposed to be, i can not see a "lacie" name
7. Right mouse click - Uninstall
8. Turn off the external USB hard drive
9. Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver
10 Does it work now?

Answer:External hard drive does not show up

check and see if the drive is in the disk management list

in "run' box type diskmgmt.msc press enter.

if you can see the drive but no drive letter for it right click on the drive and give the drive a letter.

I have a 1 TB Prodrive external had drive by SimpleTech that has stopped showing up on my pc. I recently moved, but I made a point not to jostle it around too much when moving. Now when I turn it on, the light comes on, and the icon in the lower right hand corner that lets me "Safely Add/Remove Hardware" still shows up, but it doesn't show up on my computer or anything like that.

When I turn it on, if I put my ear to it, you can hear the hard drive "revving." Basically, once or twice a second, you hear it power up, but then wind down. It does this for about 20 seconds, then nothing.

Any ideas?

Hard drive crash enquiry
My hard drive recently crashed on my desktop running XP and due to the discontinuation of support for XP, I decided to upgrade with a new motherboard, memory, hard drive etc., now running Win 8.1, which has been working fine so far. My problem is that there is data and pictures on the old hard drive which I would like to recover. Can someone advise whether it would be practical to re-install the failed drive along side my new HD in my desktop and reboot as normal and then try and access the failed drive like an external drive? I have already tried booting from the failed drive alone which did not get past the BIOS stage before switching off. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Answer:Create an external drive from a hard driveHard drive crash

IIf the drive is Sata I or II then you can get a USB 2.0 Docking Station for around $20. Plug it in the USB port and slide the drive in. See if you can read it. If it doesn't work the dock is still handy to have.

I have a 1 TB hard drive that is being used a lot. The format is NTFS or FATS, (sorry if those are not spelt correctly) windows hard drive. Anyways - there is like 400 gig spare. Can I simply go in and use gparted or something similiar and make a partition for a linux backup (which is ext4)

(I know this is a windows forum but u guys are the best! You are all v informed)

So basically from your experience if I do this is there a strong chance that the data on the drive will be hosed if I introduce a linux partition?

Thanks a lot

Answer:Can I create a partition in a (used) external hard drive?

Yes indeed. If you don't have an internal hard drive portable case, just power off your computer, hold the power button in for a minute to discharge all electricity, open the case, plug the older hard drive into the IDE or SATA cable for a secondary hard drive, (keep the case open to watch all fans), plug in the power cable, press the power button. The system will see the old hard drive and assign it a driver and may want to reboot; that's OK. Now after reboot, go to Windows Manager (Right click computer, choose Manage). Choose Disk Management, point at the older hard drive, right click your mouse and choose Format. When prompted, choose NTFS and format the entire disk. When it's done.....voila! You now have a second internal hard drive that you can use for backing up an Image of your C: Drive (Highly Recommended) and for storing all kinds of files like music, videos etc. rather than keeping them on the C: Drive and filling it up. I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book 3.0. Earlier today, I connected my external hard drive to my computer, and it showed up without any issues. After I safely removed it, I stored it away. When I took it back out, the end of the USB cable that is attached to the hard drive, not the end that goes into the computer, came out of the hard drive. If you look at the picture in the following link, you'll see what I mean. It's the part that says "SS" in this picture:

http://demo.idg.com.au/pcw/MyBook3.jpg

That little vertical rectangle-like piece came out with the wire, and it was attached to the end of the wire. I put it back into the port, but now I can't access anything on my hard drive. I can still turn my hard drive back on. I just can't get any computer to access it. I'm guessing something got messed up in the connection.

All my data should still be on the external hard drive. Is there any way that I could retrieve the data?

Answer:External hard drive won't show on computer

Yes, that connection on the external hdd is pretty much worthless. here are some thoughts...

1. get really small pliers or paperclips and attempt to remove the plastic "chunks" in the port.
2. attempt to RMA the drive, see if WD will cover broken USB3.0 ports as part of the warranty.
3. if all else fails, disassemble the external enclosure, remove the hard drive & hook it up as an internal hdd in your PC.

Hope this helps, take care!

Hello guys,

I have a problem. Whenever i plug in my external hard drive (1TB Maxtor) in my pc, it doesn't show up. It has always been working, but since i've installed Windows 7 yesterday it doesn't work anymore. So it HAS to be something to do with Windows 7.

Anyone knows any solution? Please help me, because all my documents are stored on this external hard drive and i need them on this pc.

Thanks,

EDIT:
It does show up in disk manager (don't know how it's called in english, i use dutch windows 7) and it even shows the model and brand name of the drive. So i am wondering why it won't show up in explorer?

hi,

so the external hard drive won't show up when i click on my computer. Earlier today i reformatted my computer, but now the external isn't accessible. According to device manager, the external is working fine, and i'm wondering what i'm missing.

when i reformatted it asked if i wanted to partition both C and D (D is the external, obviously), and i said no. Yes, i realize i'm an idiot. I just wasn't paying attention. Did i lose all my information on my external? Is there a way to recover what was lost without paying someone 9 million dollars to do it? How do i make the external show up again?

it's a WD 1600JB, by the way.

The Background:
Yesterday a computer in our office started misbehaving. Over the weekend, several Windows updates were installed. On Monday the user would open windows explorer and within 30 seconds or so he was prompted with a message saying something to the effect of, "windows encountered an error and had to close". All the windows including software such as Outlook and AutoCad would then close. There was no restart or shut down, just everything closing. This happened repeatedly.

I instructed him to find a restore point. He later told me the only restore points available were from Friday and then over the weekend, so he chose the latest one, that being Friday. After the restore was complete, the machine began to run through the normal boot process. However, once the windows symbol fully displayed, it would go to the black screen that normally briefly appears before your desktop appears, but the desktop never appears. The machine beeps and then re-boots. After the re-boot, you get the normal screen that prompts you with two choices, launch a repair or start normally. In either case, you get the same result as I just mentioned.

The Question:
Unfortunately, a system image of the troubled machine was never created. I pulled the hard drive and with a SATA adapter I connected it to a working machine and was able to read the drive with no problems. Can I create a system image of the now "external hard drive"? I would then use that syste... Read more

I recently got an 2TB external hard drive and realized that I wasn't using over half of it. So, I tried to use some of that space as virtual memory because sometimes my computer would freeze while playing games due to little memory left. When I tried it, however, it didn't work. I was wondering how I would get a paging file on the external hard drive.

Answer:How do you create paging file on external hard drive?

Page file must always be available, even before the USB disk is ready for use. Not sure why you need a page file on external drive, though.

Also reading and writing to external hard disk will be much slower that on the internal bus. You may have to keep the external HDD connected while turning system on every time which negates the point of having an external HDD.

I'm 90% sure that it shouldn't make a difference, that it doesn't has to be a SATA / SAS internal slave drive for you to create that drive image. But I never create a win 7 disk image on a USB Ext. hard drive before. Has any1 done it? Any difference than creating on a SATA internal drive?

Answer:Can you create your disk image on an external USB hard drive?

No difference.

I've done it with Clonezilla and imaged my laptop's hard drive to an external 2TB hard drive. I booted up into Clonezilla Live at bootup, restored the image to the laptop's hard drive, restarted and booted into the OS without issue.

Probably only difference I have to say is noticeable is the transfer speeds. Internal SATA hard drive probably would have done it faster than a USB2.0 connection to the external hard drive.

Answer:Unable to create new folders on external hard drive

To clarify, you are creating folders on the external hard drive, not the laptop's drive? I know that's what your title says, but still want to make sure. Since you are doing such a simple task and receiving a catastrophic failure, it could be that the external drive is having hardware issues. You can check it's sector health with Hard Disk Sentinel: Download Hard Disk Sentinel

Hello everyone!

I just built my new computer and everything seems to be working fine hardware-wise. I put in my old hard drive which still has Windows Vista 32-bit on it. It booted up fine (booting up and shutting down is extremely slow though), I installed some of my motherboard drivers (LAN driver, USB drivers etc.)

I am going to install Windows 7 Home Premium on it as soon as I have backed up some important documents, music and programs. However, my external hard drive (USB) does not show up in My Computer! I checked the Hardware panel thing (Apparaatbeheer), and it does show up there. Is there any other way I can access it or are there any fixes? I tried deleting some HighFilters in the registry, but this caused my PC to go in a reboot-loop.
Could I transfer files over a LAN-network to my laptop?

I have just installed CrashPlan, could I use that to back-up all my files? I don't want to pay for it and my upload speed is quite low (around 700kB/s and I want to back up over 22GB).

TL;DR: I cannot see my external hard drive in Windows, is there any other way I can access it, or backup my files (22GB+)?

I can provide any additional information.

Thanks in advance!

Let me start by saying that I am NOT computer savvy so if you can help me...please speak as if I were stupid because I probably am. LOL

I have an external hard drive (portable) that I have stored a bunch of digital scrapbooking kits on. When I plug it into my laptop, I can not figure out how to change the view of it so I can just put one "picture" on the folder. I need to know what is in each folder by looking at one picture on the icon and for the life of me, I can not get it to work. I right click, go to customize and choose file. I pick what I want on there and then click apply and it does not work. I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas for me. I can get it to work on something that is internal but not the external.

Again...remember...I need very step by step instructions because I do not understand all this computer lingo!

Thank you very much

Answer:How do I show a picture on a folder in an external hard drive

To customize your folders, you have 2 options.

Folder picture: It add the choosen picture in your folder when your view option is set to display Tiles, medium/large/extra large icons.
Does not change your icon in details, list or small icon views.

Change Icon: To customize the folder icon, it is diplayed in any view options (2D).

hi all.....i have been searching here and see lots of related problems, but not my exact problem...here goes

sony vaio running xp sp2, yesterday we purchased a fantom titanium 500 GB hard drive for backing up extensive photo and music as well as word data...the back up seemed to go fine, we used the backup wizard in xp...however, now, after the backup is complete, clicking on the icon only brings us a message about "windows needs to know what program created this file in order to open it"....that is not the exact message, but you get the idea. The "files" themselves don't show in the external hard drive window when we open it. Is that normal? I had an idea that i could click on F: drive (we allocated f: as the external hard drive) and it would show me specifically which files we loaded onto it... how can we be sure they are there?
the reason we are so consumed with whether or not the files "show" is a second problem which I have posted else where here, but is that the usb ports on the desktop pc all fried simultaneously and so we need to do a system restore to try to get them working again, and had to back up everything just in case.

thanks a million...

I went to Disk Management. It's unknown, not initialized and unallocated with black line on top. What does that mean? (See jpg 1)

It shows up in Devices and Printers but it has a yellow triangle mark on it with "!". (See jpg 2) So I click troubleshoot. It says "The driver for WD SES Device USB Device is not installed. Install the latest driver for the device." Then I click "Apply this fix." Then it says "WD SES Device USB Device doesn't have a driver. Not fixed" (See jpg 3).

I plugged my external hard drive to my other computer. I did the same thing, but still it didn't work. It gets detected but won't show up in My Computer.

Answer:how to show dimensions of video for external hard drive ?

Whether the video is on an internal or external drive shouldn't make any difference provided the said drive is not faulty. It's just the Windows version that's different, nothing to do with the drive being external, that's irrelevant.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...message edited by phil22

HeyI know this problem is has alot of words to read but please read it.Yesterday my 500gb capacity drive (i have used up 15gb space) worked fully which I named BX2BXsq.The next time I got to use my drive, lots of folders were deleted.I restarted my computer and accessed my drive and this error came up E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. My hard drive makes a funny clicking sound.I took my hard drive off and then on using another usb port and now it was called Local Disk.I took my hard drive off and then tried putting it into a mac (Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger) and the mac said that the drive was unreadable. Now when putting my hard drive in my Windows XP computer, and a speech bubble came up saying that my hardware was not recognized.I know for a fact that my hard drive still has precious valuable data. So have you got any ideas to recover data from my hard drive.

An external USB drive should require no drivers. They're built in.

Will it show up when connected to another computer?

Does it show up in Disk Management?

i bought a trix hard drive enclosure/case for my 2.5 250GB hard drive. I connected everything up and inserted the hard drive usb into my laptop but windows will not show the drive in my computer. It does make the beeping noise telling me its detected the drive and it also shows in device management.

The strange thing is i tried installing linux on it and it did, but the computer will not boot into it from the enclosure, but does from the hard drive. Ive also tried it on 2 computers and both will not assign the drive and give it a drive letter.

Answer:external hard drive enclosure will not show/load

You can't boot from a USB drive without some extensive procedures. If you format the drive as NTFS and create a new simple partition, you should be able to assign it a drive letter and it be visible in windows.

I have formatted and partitioned Maxtor 30 GB HD and want to use it as an external extended backup storage device.
The HD works perfectly with my old PC (Win XP) as an external drive through USB. But when I attach it with my new PC (Vista Home Premium), the HD is shown in 'Device Manager' only and no where in 'My Computer' or in 'Disk Management'. I have tried different USB ports on my new PC but I couldn't be able to get it recognized by Vista yet. I have searched the internet and most of the solutions say about changing of drive letters and reformatting but my problem is that external hard drive does not appear in 'Disk Management' section at all in any form. Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.

Hi all,

I bought a Western Digital MyBook (Essential Edition) about a month or so ago. Set up was easy and I moved all my music to it, and also backed up my photos. I used it quite a few times and then was out of town and did not use it for about two weeks. Today I tried to connect it again, and while it will show that a "external drive detected" and my device manager shows WD as a disk drive which is functioning properly and enabled - I am unable to access it. It does not show up on My computer or when I try the Explore function. I have it connected now and the light is glowing - but I cannot access it!! Please help.
Thanks so much.

Hi,

I have a 500gig external hard drive which sometimes does not get recognised by my computer and do solve this i have to reconnect a plug (either the mains box or the plug from to the socket or the usb cable. This usually solves my problem.

But now I have tried this method and it won't show under my computer, but when i use tweakui (powertools) it does show up as a b: drive but has a question mark next to it. The sound from the hard drive is coming out as perfectly as normal, everything is fine as normal, its just not being recognised by my computer/ showing up on my computer.

I have also tried to type in b: in the address bar to see if i may get access that way and it does not work.

I have tried connection to my laptop with this hard drive and it does not show up on there neither, are there any solutions that you guys may be able to come up with? I really don't want to loose 500gig full of work for my company.

i used WBFS manager 3.0 to put a super mario galaxy 2 iso as a backup on my seagate external hard drive. (my original is scratched up enough as it is and has lots lag) it worked perfectly on my wii but then i decided to backup all my wii games, just in case. but first i had to get them off of one computer to another because i would not have access to the other for a long time. so i formatted the external hard drive using wbfs manager, not my computer and then my computer stopped showing that it is plugged in. when i plug it in the computer makes the usb noise and the light on the hard drive shows up, but i cant access it. i tried going into cmd and doing dskchk but it didn't work it said unable to directly access it then i tried going into disk management but it said i got an I/O error. then i clicked on the seagate drive (it said drive 1) but the weird thing is that it said it had 2TB or memory when its only a 300GB drive. i couldn't have mistaken it for my computer's hard drive because its only 1TB. i have tried using all the usb ports, front and back, used different cables, tried it on 3 different computers, but same problem. i tried uninstalling and re installing the driver but to no avail. it could not have been damaged because i was using it right before i formatted it. and only after that did it stop working. its not a registry error because i did regcure but it didn't fix it. all i want is to use my drive again. i would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help. thanks... On occasions, my external hard drive will not appear in Windows Explorer when I switch it on. Switching it off then on again doesn't work. Unplugging and reconnecting the USB lead sometimes works but more often doesn't. The only sure way I've found on getting it to appear in Window Explorer is to leave it switched on and to re-start my PC.
Does anyone know how to jolt it into appearing in Windows Explorer without having to re-start my PC.

Hello,

OK...I'm 51yo female quite tech savvy for my age and gender. I have a Samsung External HD with my life's work on it basically. I am in between moving and have everything from old PC,s Laptops etc backed up on this device. All my college work as I am studying, all my web site stuff as I am building a website, you get the idea IT'S IMPORTANT!

Last night while doing my thing lost of stuff open, shut, open, shut, save, delete etc I once again go to MY COMPUTER to access a document and the drive shows up empty when open "this folder contains no files" however on My computer is shows it is still loaded up with all my crap.

I have tried 3 or 4 restore/rescue programs thus far to no avail. Also as I am currently of no fixed address my major PC with mega storage space in actual storage 3 hours away.

QUESTION:

1. How can I re-visualise the files (done show hidden files) without having to restore data to current lap top with virtualy no space on it?

2. Can up restore the data to an online thing such as Google drive and how do I do that?

3. If I buy a NEW Ext. HD can I restore the data to that?

4. What program actually WORKS to recover images, word docs, exe programs everything basically. If I have to but a paid version I am happy to as I am sur that is still cheaper than taking to some rip off tech place.

Answer:External Hard Drive shows no files/my computer show approx. 600 GB occupied

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sorry to hear about your problem. If you do not have backups of these files and have already tried several restore programs, it may be time to turn the drive over to a person or company that specialize in data recovery. (Please don't be offended by this. I've been working on PCs for over 15 years and there are many times I've had to consult a specialist as well).

Please be aware this could get quite expensive. If the drive can be recovered intact, you're likely looking at a few hundred dollars including the cost of a new drive. If the drive has to be sent for disassembly in a "clean room" to read directly off the platters, it could go as high as $1500, depending on the amount of data recovered.

Do not allow any recovery program you use personally to reformat the drive or remove/resize partitions - this could go further damage to the files.

Sorry for the bad news, but I hope this helps.

Hi! I do not know when and why did this happen but whoever invented this paranoid (hidemysecretsfrommywife) control system of sharing and permissions should be declared as the Enemy of Mankind, or the Antichrist!
I can understand that one wants to protect C: from malwares. But have you seen a malware attacking an external drive???

I have Windows7, I have an external drive where I store all my pictures taken and my music files. I already tried everything advanced sharing and so on. Still: I can only create a new folder with a right click in the drive or inside existing folders but I can not do anything else. The disk is write protected, check write permissions.
In fact, the disk isn't write protected.

If I create a new folder, I can put in it and do whatever I want inside the new folder. But I have no permission to do anything outside a new folder, i.e. with my original media files!

Why? Who does benefit from this? What is this craziness???

Answer:[SOLVED] No permission to create/ move, copy, delete files in external hard drive

Hi akofalvi.

Try this:

1. Start > Run "cmd" (this opens a command prompt window)
2. type--> diskpart (this will open another command window in a few seconds)
3. type--> list volume (this will list all of the volumes currently recognized in your system)
4. type--> select volume # (this number is going to be your external drive)
5. type--> attributes disk clear readonly

I will say this: this procedure has been met with mixed results and your problem may return. Some have even had this issue and it turned out to be a setting in Windows Media Player of all things (whoda thunk?) One responder in a forum had this to say about this very problem: what i found to fix this was to remove the settings in media player allowing it to re-organize and rename files, after which i went to the tools/advanced/restore media library and allowed it to dump my current library and reset it. That's just an FYI.

I hope that'll help. Let me know.

Good day!

Mike

PS: As an afterthought, you may need to log in to the REAL administrator account (which needs to be activated manually) and set your permissions there for your regular user name. We'll go down that path if the above procedure doesn't net you anything positive.

Greetings group.
I have a 2 month old hard drive that failed on my desktop PC, taking My Documents with 7 years worth of data. I had just moved the folder to the new drive and hadn't gotten a chance to backup yet.
I'm trying to check Recycle bins on my External hard drives to see if I ever had even a partial Documents folder on one of them..
Problem: All 3 of my external hard drives have multiple recycle bins. All of the recycle bins show the same content as my local C Drive on my laptop. I am attaching 2 screenshots for your review. One shot is of the recycle bins on external drive, the other shot is a screenshot of the recycle bins on my C drive on laptop.
I'm logged in as Administrator because my normal login cannot access any of these recycle bins. And my normal login is in the Admin group. Using Windows Explorer as Administrator, I'm unable to see the Recycle bins. I can see them with my regular login. Very odd.

I'm so desperate for help. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

I have recently re-installed Windows XP which consequently reformat my hard disk. When I plug in my external hard disk USB (which was working fine prior formatting the PC), it does not shows up in 'My Computer'.

When checking Device Manager, the device is working properly. I have verified on Disk Management, the external hard disk is there but with no Drive letters and paths, it mention "unallocated". It does not allow me to give it a drive letter.

During the re-installation on Windows, the external HD was connected to My PC.

The external HD is an Apollo 2.5" portable hard drive 250GB.

On the "USB device properties", under volume tab, the partition style is: Master Boot Record, capacity:238,473 MB, Unallocated space: 238,473 MB, Reserved space: 0 MB and status: Online

Can anyone help me on the above issue. I have some important data on it. Has the disk been erased?

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!

I recently used my system image disk to restore on a new (larger) hard drive but now when I look at the hard drive from the computer view it shows my hard drive as being the same size as the old one instead of being the size of the new one. I'm not sure
I'm making much sense so I will post a picture...

Is there anyway to fix this? Does the drive really only have 286 gigs on it?

Answer:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

I couldn't copy to it, so I suspected I'd misconnected it and using "Safely remove hardware" removed and replaced it. My other drive became unstable and different tries with chkdsk provided only short term access. I tested my damaged drive with Seagate's HDD test suite (it is a Maxtor which is now Seagate) and that didn't help. The Maxtor is now invisible on my system. As the Goflex is USB 3.0, I searched on the web for info and found a site that said USB 3 plugged into USB 2 is a no-no. Others contested that claim. I thought maybe the USB 3 caused a power spike in the hub and that cooked my drive which was a few years old. I tried to rebuild my data on a new HD from a backup copy, but that failed. I then suspected something happened to my USB hub, so I bought a new 4 port hub and new target drive, hooked them up to a basically empty netbook (XP kept current through Microsoft Update) with my backup drive. I ran a test Windows Explorer copy and paste from another smaller directory and it worked fine, but when I try to do the same with my backed up data (a larger amount) I quickly get two dialog boxes: First, "... The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

When trying to connect a line-out from my computer to listen music in an external amplifier, there is a very strong "hum" sound in the amplifier speakers. The amplifier is absoluty new and works fine at all other functions. And the line is ok because I made a test by connecting it to an MP3 gadget and it worked smoothly with the amplifier. But when I check audio to my computer with my headset connected to the audio output, this humming is audible in the background. How can I solve this problem ?. I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

Hello Guys,

Need ur help to fix my external Hard disk issue.

I have Toshiba 300Gb hard disk. It was showing only short cut icon and was not showing any data. When opened it used to prompt following error,
There was a problem starting ~$WRN.FAT32

I opened path in winrar and deleted following files,

After that hard disk does not show anything in it.
I have tried "attrib -h -r -s /s /d v:\*.*" in run.

Please click on the Windows 7 Start button and then on Control Panel
In Control Panel, select the Folder Options link.
Click on the View tab in the Folder Options window.

In the Advanced Settings area, locate the Hidden files and folders category.
Check: Show hidden files, folders, and drives

But it doesn't seem to work. It doesn't show up in device manager or disk manager. Its like nothing is plugged in. I tried switching hard disk cases and power supplies. But still nothing. The hard disk seems to try and run every so often, the light flashed red and it makes whirring noises as if it was connecting to the computer.

Please I dont know what else to do ? And it has almos 1500 GB of data.

Thanks for any future help

Answer:External Hard Disk (packardbell) will not show in windows 7

Hello vaena10 and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've tried different USB ports and even different computers, it sounds like the HD may have died. You might find something that lets you retrieve your data from this previous thead. I'd suggest reading the entire thread before trying any of the tips:

I recently noticed an issue when trying to connect to external hard drives. Initially noted that it wasn't showing in 'my computer' and so assumed I had driver issues and sought to update them from Dell's site. After doing so there was still no change, but noted that It was appearing in 'device manager'.

I even tried updating the USB hubs from the Device Manager, and it states that they are all up-to-date with the correct drivers.

Both external hard drives that i have tried has worked on other PC's so i assume that mine is the issue.

Answer:external Hard Drives doesn't show in 'My computer'

I have had a similar problem recently, where the hdd would spin up but not show in my computer.
After googling it I found that if I shut down the computer, completely not hibernate or anything, and leave it for about 30 minutes an then switch it on again.

In left mine overnight, 8 hours or so and it worked after that. My hdd worked in all the other ports, but not that one until I left it overnight.

Good luck with it.

Hi, im having a problem trying to create a system image and store it in my external hdd.
This isnt the first time i use the windows backup to create a system image, ive done it before using this external hdd with no problems at all.
But now, for some reason it wont detect this hard drive, it only gives me the option to store the image on a dvd, i dont know why?, i tested the hard drive on a different computer and IT WORKS, i tried to create an image and it does work.

Heres a picture so you guys can see the problem:

sorry the image is kinda big, but as you can see on the left, windows DOES detect the hard drive, BUT when i try to create the image, it simply doesnt, it only gives me the dvd option.
i hope you guys can help me here, thanks a lot

Answer:Create system image won't detect external hard disk

You have not stated the App you are using to create the sysrem image. Please tell us.

I have experienced the same thing once in a way with Acronis but the issue always gets resolved by restarting Acronis. You may try to restart your imaging App to see if the matter gets resolved. But I suspect that you may have already done that to no effect.

The next thing to do would be to change your image back-up App. This might succeed. Please try it out and let us have the results.

I did not even know of such things a few days ago, but in diagnosing an issue I was having, I discovered that all of our external hard-drives, regardless of which of our computers they may be connected to, show as Active in disk management.
All of our ext. drives are identical 1-TB Transcend; one is brand-new and we have had the others for a couple years.
If I ever did anything to these hard-drives that would make them show as active, I have no idea what it may have been; they have probably been like that for a long time.
The only reason I even found it out was that I had to look in Disk Management.
Has anyone else had their external hard-drive to show as Active ?
Is this just a weird thing with Transcend drives ?
Thanks for reading.

Does anyone know of software that will clone one external hard drive to another hard drive. I have tried by attaching both external hardrives  to a computer but Acronis will only find the destination drive and not the source drive. any ideas would be great Ojas

Answer:Any software that will clone one external hard drive to another external hard

What kind of data is on the HDD ? ?Are you saying that Aceonis does not rcognise both externals ? ?If not you can hool up only the HDD you want cloned and have Acronis create and save the image to your internal for now...then power down...unhook that external...and hook up the blank external...power up and clone away.NOTE: I highly suggest verifying the image before cloning...takes a bit longer buy well worth it.It's under the Tools section in Acronis.

Hello folks,

This is my first time on this forum and am confident that many of you would help me with my problem.

I know XP is not going to be supported by Microsoft from mid-April onwards but I am willing to take risk and stick with it for as long as possible.

Anyway, my problem with an external mass storage started a few days ago. The system does not detect the device connected to a USB port. In Disk Management the device is shown to be unallocated. in the task bar Safely Remove Hardware  icon is present. Also no issues with power to the device. Tried connecting the device to a USB port using new cable, but no joy. Can someone offer me a solution?

I also have an ACER laptop that detects only 320 GB of 500 GB that was recently installed.

I shall greatly appreciate any positive feedback from you all.

Thanking you.

Answer:System does not show external drive

Try right clicking computer then Manage, then click disk management, when the drives are displayed right click the unallocated drive then click make active.

Answer:How can i get my external drive to show up in windows 10

How I got a stubborn external to show and mount;

1. Unplug USB/other cable.
2. Turn power to enclosure OFF.
3. Restart Windows (allow to fully resolve desktop. ie; all services, process start up apps/programs etc.)
4. Re-Connect cable of still powered off enclosure.
5. Open file explorer window and click on 'this pc'.
6. Power up enclosure.

It takes a few seconds for the drive to spin back up, bit at that point it should look to Windows like a new device was just connected and launch the mounting subroutine.

YMMV.

I was using my seagate external hard drive, but then I tripped over the cord. When I plugged it back in, it didn't show up in windows explorer. It shows up in device manager as a driver, and it sort-of shows up under disk management, but now it says it is in raw format. However, when I launched a program to recover the raw files back into NTFS, it says it's still in NTFS. I'm not sure what is going on. It seems my computer is trying to read my external drive as two drives, neither of which it can do anything with. The drive is neither full nor empty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2 external hard-drives that I frequently move between my desktop and notebook (Dells). Maxtor and a Western Digital.
The Western has been working fine.

The Maxtor will not show up in "my computer" on my notebook all of a sudden, but it shows up on the desktop.
When I plug it in a bubble pops up saying its ready to use.

It is also in the "safetly remove hardware" window.
It plugs in and removes as it should, but is not visible as a drive in my computer.

I can not figure out how to access it!

I would call Maxtor for assistance, but I am a reservist shipping off for Iraq tomorrow and don't have time. I really need this thing to work before then.
What do I do?!

Thanks ahead for any assistance.

My T61 comes with only CD-RW/DVD. So if I make recovery disc, instead of creating 5-8 CDs, can I make recovery disc to external DVD drive? So only 1 DVD is enough? Thanks for answer.Jasper

Answer:Create Recovery Disc to External DVD Drive?

I haven't tried it, but it shouldn't be a problem. After the function has gathered the infos it needs it will ask which device it should write to, you should be able to select the usb drive.
Please note, the first disc needs to be a cd as boot cd, then you can create a recovery dvd.

If not, how would I make a bootable Win 7 CD with external drive support?

My external backup is FAT32 and my computer will not find it in system restore so I can't use my saved backups from the drive.  If I convert the external to NTFS will I be able to recover my backups through system restore?  Can I restore a new
hard drive to a previous computer build, from the external backup drive at all??  How can I restore a system image from the external to my new hard drive?  Will the FAT32 to NTFS help at all?
I have a second hard disc installed with most of all of my info on it also.  This is now used for the backup and restore disc.  I have a new restore point on it.  Is it at all possible to move my saved restore points, from the external, into
the second hard drive restore files??
Why does my computer know to backup on the external but not know how to restore from it?
I have Windows10 and my new hard drive is identical to the last one.  The old hard drive is now my backup recovery disc and does still have all info and is accessible. It only had OS problems and would not update correctly.  So now I have all of
my files and programs, just no way to make my computer restore with all old info in all new places.

I've checked disk utility and everywhere else I can think of and it just does not show up.

Is it possible to get the photos back that hadn't been backed up?

Yes we can.

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

My Thinkpad T420 hard drive crashed in a really bad way. I can't load windows (7) and windows repair says it can't help me. I removed my hard drive and put it in a usb enclosure and connected it to a different pc. I can see the recovery folder/drive and my data drive as two different drives in "my computer". Hello! I have external Samsung G3 USB station. I had two different partitions: one 'primary' (just for files) and one 'logical' (for files also). All the time I use WinXP, Linux and Vista on different computers mostly. Everything was fine... But when I bought a brand new DVD with Win7 and installed on my brand new laptop the strange things became. Now I?ll try to define my problem as much as possible clearly and accurately.
My laptop (with Win7) shows that 'logical' drive but when I go in there I can't see my folders and files (they are not hidden of course!).
In properties I can see that these files ARE there (I suppose that by the free and used space of that partition and I really know how GBs was there so in properties seems that anything is not lost).
When I connect drive to a different computer with let's say Vista it doesn't show these files also. Same with XP. But I can reach my files on Linux.
Another strange thing is that all the information in the other partition ('primary' drive) is accessible without any probs.
Now I copied all these files into Linux and used to format that partition (NTFS) and made it 'primary' also (I did it on Win7). So I have two ?primary? drives now. Then I brought all the information (from Linux) back into that drive (under my investigation). Everything was fine and I was so glad... till I restarted mtfk Computer

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

My computer failed to boot a few weeks ago. I took out the C drive and put it in an external drive case on my other computer in order to retrieve outlook emails, bookmarks, etc. The drive is 250 gigs. It only shows an 'N' drive, 130 gigs worth of data, which must have been a partition. The C drive isn't there. Is it corrupted? Will be I be able to retrieve anything from the C drive?  If the drive is corrupted, why does one partition show up and not the other?

Answer:Hard drive doesn't show C drive, but shows the other partition

I had a similar situation. I was able to get data off the drive using a Ubuntu live cd. Burn the iso to cd, put the drive back in the computer and boot to the cd. If you can see the drive in Places then you should be able to get your data off. Please note the "if" and "should".Good luck.
