Firmware Updates

Question: Firmware Updates

Hi guys this question is related to my "accused" CD/DVD burner the LG GSA 4176B, well I've gone to the site and downloaded a recent update. In the instruction it says that no background program even anti-virus and drive should be in the master. Can it be dangerous to just update it without the need to exchange the drive to be a master? My secondary IDE has my DVD ROM as the master and rewriter the slave. Besides if the case that everytime I update the firmware I must exchange it to be the master, tends to be tedious. Oh and I did not update the drive yet for safety. Thanks 8-) :-?

Preferred Solution: Firmware Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Firmware Updates

Why are you flasihng the drive ? ?Be specific.

Lenovo, what is the ETA for the AMT/vPro vulnerability fixes as per recent news? INTEL-SA-00075 Detection Guidehttps://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26755 Specifically, according to Intel:An unprivileged network attacker could gain system privileges to provisioned Intel manageability SKUs: Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) and Intel Standard Manageability (ISM).An unprivileged local attacker could provision manageability features gaining unprivileged network or local system privileges on Intel manageability SKUs: Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), Intel Standard Manageability (ISM), and Intel Small Business Technology (SBT).(from The Register) I see the 2nd gen X-Series just got a ME firmware update but it is the non-patched version as the build versions are less than 3000. For our 4th, 3rd and 2nd gen X-Series we're looking for this versions:     4-gen Core family / 2nd Gen X-Series: 9.5.61.3012 (current 9.5.60.1952)    5-gen Core family / 3rd Gen X-Series: 10.0.55.3000 (current 10.0.50.1004)    6-gen Core family / 4th Gen X-Series: 11.0.25.3001/11.6.27.3264 (current 11.6.25.1229) It is very encouraging that Lenovo still provides ME updates so hopefully we can get the above patched versions soon. Thanks!

Question: firmware updates?

I HAVE A MEDION TITANIUM WITH A 2X DVD WRITER, I HAVE BEEN LOOKING ON THE WEB FOR BLANK DVD'S FOR THIS AND MOST SITES SELL ONLY 4X AND AVISE PEOPLE WITH 2X WRITERS TO CHECK FOR FIRMWARE UPDATES. WHAT ARE FIRMWARE UPDATES AND IF I FIND ONE FOR MY PC, WILL IT UPDATE IT TO A 4X WRITTER? ANY HELP WOULD BE WELCOME.

Answer:firmware updates?

DVDROMs have a controller in much the same way as a Hard drive or a CD-RW. This controller is run by the firmware (a programme or data stored in non-volatile Memory such as EEPROM). Updating the firmaware is done for various reasons. The DVDROM may not be able to read/write 4X DVDRs properly without an upgrade. It's unlikely (though not impossible) that you'll get 4X speed from a firmware update.A firmware update, if available, will be specifically for your DVDROM and you will have to visit the manufacturer's site to find it.BTW Please don't write in capitals, it's the same as shouting at people.

i have a cd burner that is having a lot of problems and i need a firmware update. (i checked and could not find one at the locations that i know of)

so heres the problem: it can burn on cd-rws, but has trouble reading them.
when i burn a cd-rw, then i load the cd up, the hard drive activity light will stay silig red for at least a minute before it even knows whats on the cd

and it is a new drive. had it for almost a month now.
and it i erase the cd and try to reuse it, i get a buffer underrun the second it starts burning.

and the cd is only readable in the cd burner no matter what i do, i tried all 15 burn settings
and went through quite a few cd-rws
i think i may need a firmware update

Do peripheral manufacturers contract with Microsoft to deliver firmware updates via Windows updates? If not, then how are they delivered? Do people like Linksys just wait for customers to call them because their routers fail absent firmware updates?

Let's say I unplug my router for a long time and just run the data directly to my desktop from my cable modem. Wouldn't I miss firmware updates? Assuming I did, they wouldn't just load automatically when I plugged the data line back into the router, right? I would have to go to the Linksys site and download and install new firmware in the router, wouldn't I?

I hope I'm not asking too many questions, but I've rummaged around Wikipedia and run the keywords through this site and I'm still not sure about this.
Thanks for your time and consideration,
B

Answer:How are firmware updates delivered?

Firmware is not updated automatically, it has to be downloaded and only if it addresses a problem you have
Rule of thumb with firmware is if your hardware is working correctly don't update the firmware.
If you install it incorrectly you can render your hardware useless,

Beginning to wonder if I made a bad assumption ...
I live in Canada and just purchased a Lumia 930 from Amazon because there is no sign of any carrier here releasing it here. (I have checked that it will work on Canadian carriers.)
But, as I am switching from an iPhone, I assumed that any and all updates to the phone would be available directly from Microsoft/Nokia/Lumia as they are with Apple.
Is there any way to get firmware updates directly from Nokia? (I do use HMA VPN and could work with an IP just about anywhere.)

Answer:Are Nokia firmware updates always and everywhere only available via the carrier?

If your phone is unbranded as you said then yes, the updates would directly come from Microsoft

No one is really pointing fingers leading to my deciding to lump them all together. I recall when Lumia Amber was announced by Microsoft (and Nokia was not defunct), the official releases didn't take so long to arrive. I was almost prepared to put it to the efficiency of the system; I actually did. Fast forward and it is 2014. First, it was the WP 8.1 release which was to arrive on eagle's wings in January. Cut very long story short, hopes were crushed when Microsoft decided to play Side B of the cassette to disgruntled enthusiasts. Well, I would forgive that delay having seen the grandeur of the 8.1 update. Great work, good stuff. That was 4 months ago, if I didn't lose my count. (And there are only 12 of such months in a year, if anyone needs to be reminded.) Lumia Cyan came much later than could be warranted, especially given the paucity of its content. But again, those who had their hands on the DP wouldn't complain that much. It's mid-August and still no Cyan even though Nokia and Microsoft are now married. Here is my fear: If now that only a sizable number of Lumia models are out there Microsoft is struggling with putting updates on our phones, what will happen three years down the line assuming the current rate of releases of Windows phones?
Perhaps, Satya has already seen this and so made the recent move to rejig the company. I want to believe Microsoft does not need anyone to tell them that the singular greatest thing that the smartphone era ushered in is the magic o... Read more

Answer:OS/Firmware updates, Microsoft and Partners

First off, writing huge posts like this is a great way to prevent ever getting a reply. No one wants to read a post with a bunch of meaningless stuff. Keep your posts short and straight to the point.
I'm not quite sure what your question is. Are you asking what will happen for future updates?
You aren't going to get official answers about that from here. You'll get people speculating and saying what they hope. The answer to your question is that you'll need wait to find out,Are you complaining about the time it's taking to get Cyan?
You should probably give us more information then. Like your phone make/model, your mobile operator, your region, etc. These things take time. The steps are:Microsoft has to make the update (This has been done). The OEM has to create the firmware update for the specific model and country variant and implement any mobile operator features/locks.(Only Applicable to Branded Phones) The mobile operator has to update their apps and ensure the update doesn't break anything or chew through data for no reason on their network.
Step 2 and 3 go back and forth while the mobile operator requests more changes from the OEM and then testing is re-done.Are you asking something else?
Next time write a post that doesn't go off on random tangents every other sentence.

Hello,

Well, I have a Yamaha CRW2100E CD creator (16-10-40). I was very pleased when I had purchased it, some 5 months ago. About a month ago, however, it began displaying whimsical behavior - for starters, it wouldn't recognize Samsung blank CDs. It used to, but... now I have 25 Samsung coasters on my desk. Then, it began refusing to read disks just created with it, though they could be read by other CD ROMs (this happened only with blank CDs of a particular manufacturer).

I feel this is only the beginning. I went to the shop that sold it to me (#[email protected]#*&%^@!%[email protected]#$%!!!!). The guy there suggested that I go to Yamaha's site and install a Firmware update to my CD burner from there.

Now, as I understand, the potential for causing damage with Firmware upgrades is great. Guess it would be a good idea to try reinstalling the driver first, or installing a newer version of it, but say it failes, what do you guys have to say about Firmware updates? Recommended? Any caveats I should know about?

Thanks,
Daniel.

Answer:Yamaha CD Writer - Firmware Updates

Iíve never had problems nor do you hear of many from installing firmware. It isnít a very chancy operation if you follow the directions. I would do that first. Acer is the only manufacturer I have ever seen recommend not flashing the firmware unless you have a problem. Most recommend you keep up with the firmware updates even if you arenít having problems Ė an indication they consider it safe.

That burner isnít Yamahaís best effort. It has a smoke and mirrors fake burn-proof, it is the only 16X burner I know of that isnít true 16X and it is so noisy your neighbors probably know when you are using it. With their 20X they went to a true burn-proof, quieted it down and everyone had to go to zone-CLV by 20X.

I donít understand how it can make a Samsung coaster if it wonít recognize the CD. Firmware often fixes the sort of problems you are having though. Get the latest update for your software as well.

Why do they need the carriers to do it?
Never understood this

Answer:Why can't Ms just rollout firmware and software updates themselves?

Because they want the carriers to support their phones. The carriers have final say on the actual capabilities of a phone and the software on it. They load their own crappy apps and services and delete stuff that either competes with their stuff or some other carrier negotiated an exclusive for, Data Sense on ATT is an example, Verizon got an exclusive for awhile and ATT users were left out. Don't ask me how Apple manages to avoid this, great sales/negotiators I guess.

I think I am in the right forum to start a new thread? If not I hope someone will direct me properly. I don't like when I do something wrong rolleyes

Question:

When is the proper or right time; or... when does it necessitate to update the bios (is this called - flash) or any firmware?

I just completed a fresh install of XP Pro, updated to SP3 and am having some complications with driver installs & updates, But that is being discussed on a different thread within this forum,
so no help required here for this latter statement!

Just a question of curiosity about the bios & firmware.

Answer:Bios & Firmware updates? ***Required?***

Hi

A BIOS update is only required IF the BIOS update covers the issue you have, this could be CPU support to USB/Thermal Management support, but BIOS updates are limited in what they will fix.

A BIOS update is not to be taken lightly as if you mess it up then your motherboard is essentially dead, some motherboards have dual BIOS chips which take the stress out of flashing the BIOS but many dont.

TP T61pWinXP SP3 I continually patch my TP with the System Update (along with Windows Update) but I'm curious to know if I should be downloading and installing firmware updates from the Lenovo drivers & software website. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67853 Does firmware updates come with the System Update or is that a separate maintenance task? Thanks.

System Update simply automates the download and installation of the drivers, utilities, firmware and related software that's available on the Drivers and software page for your model of ThinkPad. That includes such firmware as the system BIOS.

It was not victim of impatience or bad temper, abuse or intentional neglect...but of a bad decision using a firmware update without any prior knowledge of the impact of the wrong firmware.

If I understand this right, once a printer updates the firmware to a new version, then it is stored within the printers memory and can not be rolled back to a previous version. How do I insure that my printer can not install software updates. If I do not see the brand name, such as Cannon, listed in the items allowed through my Windows firewall is that good enough? Or could an update sneak through a program like Bonjour?
Can I just remove Bonjour? I think that I do not use it for anything?
Please advise if I have this thread in the wrong sub-forum. Thanks.
Carl

Answer:Firmware updates from printer not wanted.

What model printer, most will not update firmware without asking you unless its software/drivers have a component that is set to look and do it automatically and you can normally turn that off. Also you should mark your thread as unsolved unless it is.

I see updates for the Thunderbolt Controller and driver have been released. I see nothing about any "fixes" in the release notes, only "enhancements". This is a little disconcerting since there have been a number of issues with the Thunderbolt controller. A manufacturer of a new Thunderbolt 3 dock has discovered problems with it. Hello,

My Satellite X200 was running Vista and I installed Win7 myself. I also installed Tempro.

Now Tempro offers me 4 firmware updates dating back from 2008. The readme text warns me to check the FW version first using Toshiba disk creator.

But I don't have this program installed any more and I don't know where to find the FW version without it.

Should I install Toshiba disk creator first (but I didn't find a Win7 version for my x200) ?

Or can I go ahead and install the updates without checking the FW version ?

Thank you very much for your advice

Answer:Satellite X200 - Which firmware updates should I install ?

Hi NicoleRosset,

From my own experience I can say forget the firmware updates of CD/DVD drive. I never did such an update because it?s not necessary if the drive runs properly. So if you don?t have any problems with your CD/DVD drive, just ignore the TEMPRO message.

I hope I could help :)

710-14IKB with WIndows 10 Pro.I just wanted to post back on my experience with the update mess that accompanied this laptop release. Until 15 minutes ago, I was running on BIOS v2.01 but Windows showed that something wrong with the driver for 'Lenovo UEFI System Firmware 1.28' in device manager. Following Windows' suggestion I let it search for an update. It said the one currently installed is the best. In 'Devices and Printers' I let Windows 'troubleshoot' the laptop. It said the same thing but offered to reinstall the same drivers. After a reboot, I still got the same warning about the Firmware 1.28. Then I noticed that a newer BIOS version was available (v2.03). I installed the BIOS update and rebooted (with fingers crossed). After the reboot it STILL showed an issue with the Firmware 1.28 BUT after letting it reinstall again the error went away!!! So it looks like they are tied together. the Firmware reinstall didn't work until I had BIOS v2.03 installed. What do *I* take away from all of this?Lenovo really needs to work on its QA. Just booting up any one of these laptops with v2.00 or earlier BIOS would have shown anyone who isn't deaf that it's NOT ready to ship. Then we've got this firmware-BIOS-driver dance to get everything working properly without errors. My guess is that Lenovo performed little to no time testing when the new (IKB) versions came out, relying on the same drivers and firmware that worked for the old (ISK) model. Note, for those who are... ROCA (CVE-2017-15361) has been out for some time and yet I have not seen, unlike most all other major PC manufacturers, ANYTHING on any MS website concerning a firmware patch for ROCA.

No updates, ETAs, We're working on it, etc.  It seems to me that they hope it just stay quiet.

I did, however, open a ticket with MS Support and was told by the Escalation tech that ROCA and the Intel J-Tag vulnerabilities were considered to be LOW RISK and would be patched eventually, no ETA.  This was after the various front line staff I spoke
with had no idea what I was talking about.

I'm hoping someone on here has heard or read something from Microsoft to help restore some confidence in the brand.  I'm definitely considering a strong suggestion to stay away from MS hardware.

I have replaced the original TSST TS-L632D drive with a new TSST TS-L632H drive in my Toshiba P200 laptop, now running Windows 7.

I continue to get write errors (power calibration area error 380381-26-00037304 - please check if the disc has any scratches, dust or grime) and the DVD-RAM utility reports that the discs are not recognised. I have tried both DVD+R and DVD-R drives from two different manufacturers (Sony & Verbatim), both of which worked fine previously.

Windows reports that drivers are up to date and I suspect the problem is firmware since the new drive has CH01 firmware. I cannot, though, upgrade to TO02 or TO03 firmware as downloaded from the Toshiba website as the upgrade package reports that the existing firmware is incompatible.

I it possible and safe to try to upgrade the firmware using SFDNWIN.exe (and the TO03 BIN file) with the NOCHECK option?

What else might be causing the problem, and how can resolve it?

Resolution urgently required. Any help gratefully received.

Can anybody tell me please, if I will SIM unlock my phone, will I receive carrier specific firmware updates after that, or the update for non-carrier phones?

Answer:If I unlock the sim on my phone, will I receive specific firmware updates?

You will receive the carrier specific firmware updates not the updates for non-carrier phones.

These things look to be getting pretty complex now with a bunch of cloud features etc. I don't want a another network attached device that never gets patched.

I'm looking at products like the Brother MFCL9550CDW (that sort of price range). The latest firmware related date item on that particular model's page is from a year ago, but it's not clear to me whether that date is for the firmware, or just the tool. Anyway, can you guys get me up to speed on which printer manufacturers have a good reputation for security and long term firmware support?

Answer:Which small business printer manufacturers take security/firmware updates seriously?

None.

Attackers really don't target printers for malware and virus. The most i have heard of is cooks trying to get ahold of the internal disk to try and retrieve old images of files.

Thank you all in advance who decide to help me or even just read my posts, I must preface my request for help with the following disclaimer. I at one time was fairly competent with computers but after several head traumas and other injuries have taken their toll and I get frustrated and confused at times over the most simple of issues yet breeze through more complex ones.

My system spec page is current as of yesterday. Now onto my current issues.

The device is an Acer Iconia Windows 8 tablet. I've downloaded and installed a couple of Acer firmware updates since purchase. I now plan to sell it, so I've selected the "Reset Your PC" option. Now the first screen when starting up displays the language, region, etc. selection lists like it did when I first bought it.

Does selecting "Reset Your PC" uninstall the firmware updates? I don't feel like setting it up to find out, and then resetting it again (for sale). Thanks.

Answer:Does "Reset Your PC" Uninstall Firmware Updates?

Hello pseudoware,

No. The firmware update is only for the BIOS/UEFI firmware chip on the motherboard. It will not be affected by resetting the PC to reinstall Windows back to factory conditions.

When I attempt to do so, the firware does not recognize the device although the device shows up in My Computer as a Zen Xtra. I have reloaded the drivers. When I attempt to reinstall the firmware, it states that it cannot detect the device and please connect it now. How do I resolve this lack of recognition?

Every time there is a windows update, my computer turns itself on and installs the update on its own. It's really annoying when I leave my home for a few days and come back to find the computer on at the log-in screen. How can I make it so the computer doesn't automatically turn itself on and install the updates?

Answer:Windows updates - Computer boots up on it's own and installs updates, how can I stop it doing updates on it's own?

In your PC settings, try setting Windows update to anything except "Automatic". However, with this setting change, you would need to regularly check for updates to ensure that your PC is up-to-date with regards to security.

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.

I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework.

Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM.
Windows wants to install the same four kb files again.
How do I stop this?

Answer:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

I find it odd that when I do a Windows Update in Windows 7, the Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) updates are also found. But if I do a Windows Update in XP Mode, the MSE updates are not found. I don't suppose this is controllable? I'd like the Windows Update to find MSE updates.

Answer:MSE updates flagged in Win 7 updates but not XP Mode updates

In XP you have to go into the "Add/Remove" programs and check off the "Show updates" box at the top to reveal the MS updates installed.

I know Brink and Tairiku (experts I'm sure) have contributed to a solved thread "Turn Off Windows Updates" but here I am with an MBA in Finance and still somewhat confused based on what I'm trying to do.
It's all about the Nvidia drivers. I have a working W10 driver (355.80) which was just released and thanks to posts on various forums and all the previous W10 drivers that didn't work I waited to upgrade to W10 until now. New video drivers are released frequently, at least with every new game launch. It is sometimes the case that a new driver breaks something fixed in a previous driver, often specific to hardware. I want to be able to decide whether I will try the new driver and the next and the next. Sometimes I will try it out, sometimes I won't want to based on feedback.

First question is when I select 2 in group policy "notify to download and notify to install" I get that red sentence "some settings are managed by your organization". Am I supposed to get that message? I'm the only user and the admin.

If it is working and I sometime soon see an Nvidia driver, that group policy edit wouldn't let me stop the driver from installing, would it? It just tells me it will be installed. Not sure of the value of this as I can look at the Nvidia control panel to see if a new driver has been installed.

Then there is "wushowhide". Does that only allow me to hide a video driver that has already been installed or can I prevent the driver from ... Read more

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I keep getting Error message: Install Failure after Windows updates are downloaded and Windows attempts to install those updates.

The download is successfull, however, after Windows 7 attempts to install those updates I get this message:

Configuring Windows Update. Do Not Turn off computer.

After Windows attempts the installations of those updates, I get the following message: Failure configuring Service Pack. Reverting Changes. Error_install_failure (0x80070643).

I contacted Microsoft on the problem via emails....they went through a number of trouble shooting techniques....but after all of their recommendations, all they could tell me was to reinstall Windows 7.

I really would not like to do that. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

I am really flustrated with my T61P - a week ago it lost my user profile, so I installed a new hard drive and reloaded the OS (Vista Ultimate) from the recovery disks.  I have installed antivirus software, do all the MS updates, and then uninstalled all the ThinkAdvantage programs (except for Client Security).  Continuing to check for new Windows Updates works fine.  Then I installed ThinkAdvantage System Update - can still do Windows updates.  Run System Update, install 19 updates, reboot - Windows Updates no longer works!  I get the message "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running/  You may need to restart your computer."  The service is running (I even restarted it from Admin tools).  Rebooting makes no difference.  I have reloaded the OS and updates about 6 times in the last week and always end up with this problem.  It does appear that since Windows Update was working before installing the Lenovo updates that there is a problem with the Lenovo updates. Help would be appreciated. David

I'm usually pretty savvy when it comes to de-virusing a computer, but this one has got me completely stumped.

I recently noticed a browser hijack where in all browsers, any result from yahoo.com is redirected to porn. Also, every update (anti-malware application download, update, or windows kb download, or windows update) will fail, sometimes with a DNS failure, sometimes with a 404 at all times.

I have tried to download

Ad-Aware (updates fail, returns 404)
AVG Antivirus (updates fail, dns times out)
Avira AntiVir (updates fail, returns 404)
Microsoft Windows Update fails to open (just redir's back to windows update)
Microsoft KB Downloads (Service Pack 3, various KB patches return 404)

Can anyone help identify this? I updates avira, and avg manually (via a cd from another computer) and they say the computer is clean. All Conficker scan tools say the computer is clean. Microsoft live onecare says the computer is clean.

I also add that I'm going to format & reinstall, but I would really like to know what I have (had) so that when I am trying to recover data from the old HDD I don't reinfect myself.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello there, In India at 1st place, if you are running windows 10 on a mobile, you are hands off the single soul, because service centres here, say, it isn't yet available yet for normal consumers, That aside, I am about to update my mobile on 10586.smth latest build l, After completing should I await the upcoming anniversary Jargon, to turn the game on even more, Is it any different to current set of improvements, that said I did those on my cellular dat on 4G, so that poses a gr8 question of cost, in mind.

Answer:Do the regular updates from settings and Microsoft's anniversary updates differ? If Yes, Why?

I would only upgrade to the production build of 10586 and then wait for the upgrade to the Anniversary Edition. It should follow shortly over the next few weeks. Windows 10 Mobile has many improvements, so I would say it is worth it.
While the main upgrades... 8.1 to 10586 use a lot of data (3GB), the monthly updates are much smaller.

Suddenly Windows 7 has stopped installing Windows Updates. It downloads, then creates restore point, starts installation, but then comes back with the error code 800F0900. This happens with all the updates when carried out individually, critical or optional. I first went through the process of clearing all the Start-up Programs in the Services section of msconfig. As that did not solve it I then stopped all but MS services, and that did not solve it.  I tried the Microsoft .NET Setup Verification Tool. This said there were problems that it could not fix and sent a report to Microsoft.  Following an earlier thread on this site, I installed and used the Windows Repair program from Tweeking.com. This failed to solve the problem. Does any one have any other possible advice to help solve this problem ?

Answer:Windows Updates will not install. Error code 800F0900 for all updates.

I would try running the System Update Readiness Tool:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858 .

Two days ago I had a graphics driver update forced on me, along with that windows installed some security updates (which is fine) and installed an application called the "Update Assistant".
The update assistant eventually forced me to upgrade to version 1709 when I've been on 1607.
The strange thing was, I had updates turned off by disabling the Windows Update service via services.msc. After disabling it, it kept going back onto manual start (but the service was still stopped).
I even tried turning off the triggers for the Windows Update Assistant via the task scheduler. Eventually I managed to delete the program and turn off the triggers for Windows Update in task scheduler as well.
However the Windows Update service still went back onto Manual... this worked for about.... 12-16 hours before it turned back on.

What's going on? What keeps turning the windows update service back on? I'm getting very frustrated, Computer has worked fine hence why I prefer updates off. Creators update completely messes with my performance in game, which is one of the main reasons I spent so much to build this system.

My only real next option is disabling windows updates via the registry editor. Now I know there's a few ways to do it, but I'm not sure of what the real difference is. Which edit key should I enter? (Outlined here)

I've never had any major problems with Win7 before and last year I installed some of the KB updates that turned out to be Win10 gubbins -mainly cos they were all labelled as 'Win7 updates'. Yeh, I wasn't being vigilant enough at the time, but then with no Win7 problems before, I had no problems with M$.

I always boot up my laptop offline -mainly cos I have stuff to do on the computer first and then I'll go online afterwards. I have a USB mobile internet dongle for my laptop -not a fixed line -and the wifi is turned off. Following an install of some of these updates, the next time I booted up, I got the usual opening screen (Dell logo + F2 Set Up/F12 Boot Options), then the screen goes black . . . and then nothing - the screen stayed black. Normally it then goes to 'Starting Windows' yada yada, log-in screen appears, sign in, off we go . . .

So after nothing, I tried again . . . and nothing. F2 = BIOS, change the settings . . . and nothing. Tried all sorts of BIOS settings . . . and nothing. F8 = advanced . . . nothing. Couldn't reach the log-in screen, no sign of 'Starting Windows'. After about half an hour - various BIOS settings making no difference at all - I made a cup of tea and thought 'Well that's that then . . .'

The previous weeks had been 'GWX! GWX! You want Win10! Yes you do!' but my approach was to leave it a bit -wait until after the initial fanfare had died down, any early bugs fixed, and check out the feedback after a few months of people using Win10 proper... Read more

I've got Office 2003 Student Edition (all installed, minus Outlook). I haven't done any updates to it. I did not install the Microsoft GDI+ Detection tool. And I only visit Windows Update (not Microsoft Update) and install the critical updates under custom install.

I'm wondering:

1. Are the updates for MS Office that are critical security things included when you do Windows Update? (For example, there are a number of things listed here towards the bottom: http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=2232 -- would those have been included in the last batch of critical Windows updates?

2. Do you need the GDI+ thing to do Office Updates?

3. When you go to the Office Updates site, it wants you to install and run some kind of Active X thing. Is this necessary? And can it cause any problems?

4. Can doing critical Office updates (separate from whatever, if anything, that comes with Windows Update) cause any problems or conflicts with other things on your computer?

Thanks for the help!

1. No. You either do Windows update and Office update, or you do Microsoft update, which does both at once.

2. I think so, but I am not positive. If you need it, it will install it, or, if you decline, you may not get updates. One way to find out, try it.

3. I don't think it will do the updates without it. Again, try it. It never caused any problems for me having it.

Answer:Windows Updates Fails configuring updates and reverts back

Hi bro,I had the same problem 3 days ago and I have solved the problem so, I think, I can help you, first of all I need to know if you have any antivirus tool intalled on your computer,if it so,[download CLEANER sofware from filehippo.com-it's important]uninstall them, for this action use safe mode by pressing F8 button, when you boot with safe mod you will not be able to uninstall your antivirus, because you have loaded only the drivers that needs safe mod, that's why you must delete your antivirus manually, for best result go to control panel-->folder options-->mark "show hidden files, folders, archives" apply and ok then go to user folder and open AppData\Local\"antivirus folder" and delete it,after this open AppData\Roaming\"antivirus folder" and delete it as well,at the end,you have to delete the main folder of your antivirus, that is installed on C or another drive.for example:C:\Program Files\ESET.After that open cleaner go to REGISTRY and scan for issues and if you get[I am sure you will get errors] any problem, fix them[delete them, you don't need to save registry settings before deleting] after cleaning registry, you have to run cleaner,so, go to software main window and press RUN CLEANER button[it's the last step] and restart your computer with normal mode. Now you can install updates and configure your windows safely.I hope this will help you

W=2000XP.IE6,, About 2 months ago, I { && many, many others } had problems with MS automatic updates.Seems a couple of the updates did more damage than anything else. I had to go into Safe Mode to restore my computer to an earlier date. All is running very well, now, with automatic updates turned off. I do get the pop-up at the bottom telling me this alert, but I ignore. ONLY thing is, I am NOT updating anything right now !! I am unsure of what I need & what I don't need, or what may damage my computer. I am fairly computer experienced & don't know the best way to custom install a few updates, here & there, as are best for my system. What is the BEST way for me to keep the system safe , as far as updates go ??

Answer:Solved: Microsoft updates= disconnected automatic updates & am leary, now !

I have never posted on a forum before so apologies if I am doing this wrong. The problem started when I tried to plug in my (new) iphone to my Dell pc. The device was not detected so I tried to update my itunes software - update failed and I received a Windows 7 error. After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

Answer:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I don't have that detection tool either. At least some of the office updates are available through the windows update feature. You can also navigate to the Office updates site from the windows update site. There are no problems with installing the office updates separately. In fact, I generally download only 1 or 2 updates at a time as I am on dial-up.

Answer:updates constantly failing and searching for updates takes forever

Windows updates have been slow for a lot of Windows 7 users ever since Windows 10 was released.
Try rebooting the PC, then install the latest Windows update client. Then reboot the PC again and check for updates. Be prepared to wait for at least 30 minutes.

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

Sorry if my post title is a little longwinded - but these three problems seem to be related. After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again - again. Thanks.

Until the October 2014 updates I would always receive a sytray notice of which updates had been installed. To clarify, after new Windows Updates were installed and with or without a reboot of the system, I would receive a systray notification that new updates had been installed and upon clicking that notification a window would open and show the updates that had been installed and success or failure status.

I no longer receive that notification. This was true for the October and November patch Tuesday updates. I can open Windows Update and select View Update History and see that the updates were installed but the systray notification only showed the latest installation history and was more convenient that having to open Windows Update to view the update history.

Anyone have any idea as to what caused the systray notification to stop working after updates were installed? OS is Win 7 Home Premium SP 1.

TIA for any replies.

Answer:No systray notice of installed updates after Windows Updates

Should I post this in the Windows 7 General Discussion forum? Doesn't seem to be much response here.

I have 2 updates that have failed to install on my computer. They are KB954430 and KB973688 and with an error of 643. I?ll explain the computer first then what I have tried.
My computer has Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, 1 TD hard drive, and 8GB of RAMM. I just purchased it as a refurbished computer from Newegg about a week and and this is how it starts out. This should be fun. The only thing that I have done to the computer is add Office, McAfee Internet Security, and Photoshop.
Had automatic updates yesterday and these 2 failed? KB954430 and KB973688 had error code 643.
Looked online with the update and error code and found the solution given below on the Microsoft website.
Ran the stand alone install for both KB954430 and KB973688 and got the following error:
Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable.
Ran your automatically reset Windows Update components program and came back with the following error:
Troubleshooting was unable to fix all of the issues found. You can find more details below.
Windows update error 0x8007005(2015-05-29-T-12_18_15A) Not Fixed
Problems installing recent values Not Fixed
Service registration is missing or corrupt Fixed

At that point I figured I would stop until I was able to talk to people who have a lot more knowledge on this than me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell XPS 15 Z laptop with 6 GB of RAM, 4 x 2.53 GHz processors and 500 GB hard drive which is only about half full. The operating system is Windows 7 Pro/ 64. All updates are current. I have Kaspersky anti-virus, malware bytes, & spybot search and destroy. All of which say the computer is clean.
I have repeatedly successfully installed 2 Windows updates:

Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2836939)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2858302)

Then, within a a few minutes I am notified that 2 new updates are available... The same ones. Just to make sure the update were truly successful, I have reinstalled them several times with the same result.

Occasionally there are other Windows updates included along with my two familiar ones. The others install fine and I never hear anything more about them. But the two above will soon come back as new updates available.

Though I can certainly ignore responding to these update notifications, it would be kind and nice to get it fixed.

Thanks Larry

Answer:2 Windows updates install successfully, re-flagged as new updates

Right click on the ones you already have (when they show up again) and 'hide' them. That will stop the nuisance.

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.
