Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)

Question: Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)

This is just one of those odd quirks I have run into. When I open a new document in Word, then open an older file, the new document closes and only the old one is displayed.Using Microsoft Office 2010, specifically Word.Windows 7 64-bitA bit of explanation, I often do research/writing for school or for fun. This issue has always happened, just one of those small annoyances. Here is the exact thing that is happening:1. I open a new (blank) word document, by clicking on the Word icon or by selecting "Open New Document" in the Word program.2. I open an older (saved) Word document, by clicking on the saved file, not by using the "Open" function in Word.3. The New (empty) document disappears, only the older document is open. I must now open a new empty document to write in. What I want to happen:1. Open new document2. Open old document3. Both new and old document are open (2 windows).Other notes in no particular order:- Word has always operated like this. Just wondering if there is a way to stop it.- I am not using the "Open" function in Word to open the older file, I am opening the older file by double-clicking it in the File explorer. When I use the "Open" function in Word, it does the same (basically "closing" the new file in order to open the old one). - I tried searching through Word's settings but couldn't find anything that seemed to relate to this behavior.- As per regular Word behavior, the new document is auto-named "Document1". After the new file is closed (from opening the old one), and I must re-open a new document, it is called "Document2". - Basically, as far as I can figure, opening an older word file while a blank document is open closes the blank document. I don't know why this is the case. I often do this, as I open a blank document to type then open reference documents to review or research before I get started. A simple, 2 second delay, but confusing nonetheless.Apologies for any confusion, and thank you for any assistance!

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)

Yes, you are right. That is normal for MS Word.Do this:Open a new document. Type something. Even a single space. Save it with a name you want. Now open an older document. Both documents can be on the screen or cascaded. If memory is not an issue, you can haven two instances of Word.

Hello everyone, I've been having some issues with Word 97 lately and I'm absolutely stumped. Any help would be wonderful...

Twice now, I've had Word 97 tell me that it cannot open select documents; a few weeks ago I tried to open a doc and it gave me this message:

Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
* On the File menu, click Open to open the document.
* Make sure the file has a .DOC extension

I did both; it would not open from the File menu and it DID have a .doc extension. I tried everything I could think of to get it back, including moving it to another computer and trying to open in there, renaming the document, everything. The closest I got to getting it back was opening it in WordPad - even then, it ate certain paragraphs up and lost the last page completely.

After having no luck at getting it back, I decided that since the document was only 3 pages long, I could stand to retype it and deleted the document. I had no problems opening up any of my many other documents; and so I figured, somehow that one file got corrupted and I just needed to cut it as a loss.

But now, it has happened again with another, much longer document. Again, I can get some of it back with WordPad/RTF, but not all of it. As before, all other documents are fine and openable, just not this one. I have scanned for viruses and the like - my computer seems to be clean. I have moved all my other documents to a removable flash drive so that they don't... Read more

It strongly suggests that your problems stem from using Word 97 on Vista.

It is not a recommended activity to do so and many others have problems with trying to operate Office 97 on Vista.

Actually, I did a search for *.doc and have discovered  not one of my Word documents have anything in them.    I changed the default from  Kingsoft writer to Windows 3 one or two days ago.  I went into Kingsoft writer, and opened up a few documents - they all opened OK.  When I tried to open the original missing document, it said something about disable macros - so I did, and the document came back.    Can any one tell me what/why it happened, and what do macros do?

A friend is having this problem at her work that just started recently.

She needs to have multiple Word documents open at a time and when she closes one, either via the shortcut icon or via File - close (not close all), it will close the entire group of Word documents.

I'm not sure what version of Word she has but I think it's 2000.

Any ideas? I can't check for malware because it's a large business and they have an IT department but they are stumped by this as well.

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

Answer:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

Answer:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.
Regards

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more

I used "Edit Individual Documents" in order to get all the letters in one document. Now the problem is i need a backup of each letter on my computer and i have no clue if its even possible to save each page in the master document as a unique document. If not, is there a way of saving each unique document of a mail merger?

On my previous computer with Windows 2000, I was able to make incremental backups of a Microsoft Word document while it was being created by me. The advantage of this was that if an "accident" happened and the document was lost or corrupted before it was completed or saved to a folder, the partially completed document could be retrieved from a special folder somewhere in C-drive. I was able to specify how often a new backup was created (ex.: every 3 minutes, ex.; every 10 minutes, etc.). It is possible that this special folder also contained backups of all previously saved Word documents, which were also being re-backed up every few minutes. -- I cannot find any reference to this on my new computer (Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002) in the Windows search engine, or in the Word user interface "Help". I cannot remember how I found this feature on my previous (W~2000) computer. -- Thanks

Hello

I don?t know what you mean with laptop keeps sending the document but if you have this issue with office word or some other office application, try to check some forum where you can find discussion about similar theme.

I can not give you any precise answer but it is maybe because of office specific settings or you press accidentally some key on the keyboard and on this way interrupt symbols entering.

I was working on a Word document that someone sent me by email in form of rar and saved the document. I now can't find the revised file and I have lost about 8 hours of work. Any ideas on where I can find this file? I looked in the email that was originally sent, but it is still the old file. I have also done searching on my computer with no luck. Help, I'm desperate!!! I have Word 2007. Please give me reply as soon as possible.

Answer:Cannot find the saved revised document in Word document

If you were only hitting "Save" and not "Save As" the document is likely, unfortunately, gone. You can try opening Word by itself and going through recent documents to see if it shows up. If you opened it directly from the email and the email was in Outlook, you might be able to find it in the Outlook Secure Temp Folder. To get to this folder, the easiest way is to send yourself a PDF file, open the PDF from the email then go to File | Properties and on the General tab (this is from memory, so I might be off a little bit) you'll find a location that you can click on. In this folder, you have a slight chance of finding the modified file. The only other option you have, that I can think of, would be digging through your temp folders hoping to find a .tmp or .doc file in there that has the content, but I give that about a .01% chance of happening. Good Luck!

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more

Okay, when I go to open up some of my word documents the icon seems almost see through, and the first letter of the document has been replaced with a ~$. There are a few files like this and they are all 1kb in size. When I open the file all that appears are little boxes and random symbols.
Sometimes it says I need to use a converter to see these and that my office 2003 is corrupt. So I go and download some Microsoft viewers and converters but it doesn't seen to help. If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

Those are usually temp files. If they are in the same folder as the correct filename, without the see-through icon, then you can just delete these temp files.

Answer:word opening document at startup

If you want to open Word with no document showing, not even a blank one, make a shortcut to "winword.exe" wherever you want it or use one you already have. I discovered that you can do this with a shortcut already on the Start Menu under Programs or one on the desktop but you cannot do this with a Word shortcut that's "pinned" to the Start Menu. You can either use an existing shortcut or make a new one, add the change below and then pin it if you like.

Right click on the shortcut and go to Properties. In the "Target" field, at the end of the path add one space and /n. Click OK.

When you click on that shortcut, Word will open "blank," that is, no document showing.

On the other hand, if you do want it to open with a blank document but it's opening one with data in it, it's likely that the file that's opening is a document that accidently got saved as "normal.dot." To save that document and return normal dot to it's blank state, open Word, click on Save As, make sure that "Word document (.doc)" (without the quotes) is showing in the Save As Type field, and save it wherever you like. Close Word.

Then search the harddrive for "normal.dot"...it's a hidden file so make sure in Folder Options>View that "Show hidden files and folders is checked...and delete it.

I have MS Word 2003 and have been having trouble with it the last few months. If I do not have MS Word open, and I double click on a specific MS word document on my computer, one of two things happens:
1) MS Word opens up, but not that specific document
2) I get an error message saying that MS word can't find that specific document

In either case, I double click on the specific MS document again, and it opens up fine the 2nd time. It's just frustrating.

Any thoughts? If MS Word is already opened, any specific document I try to open works fine.
I'm not sure if it is interrelated, but also, when my outlook is open and I try to click on a web link from an email, if my web browser (firefox) is not already open, I get an error message as well, and I have to open my web browser first and then go back and click on the link again. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case there was some connection.

I appreciate the help!

Is there a work-a-round for opening a Microsoft Word 2000 Document in Wordpad. I only have wordpad and keep getting the error in the image below. I found some help topics but none worked.

Answer:Opening MS Word Document In Wordpad

This is a free download program that may work for you here's the site http://www.openoffice.org/#00000002

It is very similar to MS office suites which should allow you to open your .doc files and many others. I used it only once, and I can't remeber how user friendly it is.
There's also viewers provided by Microsoft that should allow you to open MS files even if you don't have the programs. They're located here http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp

I am trying to resolve a problem with a Word 2000 document I've been given (it's my step-daughter's college project and is very important!). It's a large document (38 Meg!!!) that contains a lot of pictures. It was created in Word 2000 and that's what I'm trying to open it in, but when I do so I get an error message telling me that the path or file name is invalid. The dialog box suggests renaming the file and checking the permissions, which I've done, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Many thanks...

Can anyone help with a problem that i have trying to open attachments that i send from my works computer to my own PC. They are created in micosoft works word processor and sent as a attchement via e mail. When i get them on my own PC they have changed to wordpad documents, if i open them in wordpad nothing is there, if i try to open them using word processor i get the message i do not have enought memory to open file, close your document, close other programs and try again. When i click okay a blank word processor documents appears. What is causing this ? i do not have the problem if i create the document on my own PC. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Answer:opening word document attachments

The "not enough memory" error message rarely has anything to do with memory. What usuallyhappens is that a program reads some data that it assumes to be the data size and findssome ridiculous value. If it's with a specific document (or documents), the document is most likely corrupted. If it's with all documents, the problem is likely a corrupted works installation. Couldbe a DLL file or some registry settings.Try uninstalling your works suite, reinstall and try again...

Running Microsoft Office 2003 (11.5604.5606) on Windows Vista Home Premium.

First, any time I start an Office program, I am required to accept the license agreement, even though I have accepted that same agreement every one of the hundreds of times I've stated an Office program.

Next, when I exit Word, it asks me if I want to save the changes to normal.dot, every time I close Word.

Next, I can double-click on a Word document to open it in Word and Word says the document doesn't exist. I have no problem copying these same files to a flash drive and opening them on the same version of Word on another computer.

Answer:Solved: Word says the document I'm opening does not exist.

I received a letter as an attachment via my ntl email account and opened the attachment which opens on word 2003. I could only see the date and my name on the document. A bit of exploring showed that the text of the letter was contained in a text box. I could not change the size of the text box or get to the text except by deleting the first part of the text to display the second bit. Using the menu option I could convert to frame and read text that way (a job rejection letter!)Anyway, I then forwarded the email to my yahoo email account, where the attachment was scanned and the document opened in all its glory, including the company logo and graphics.....So far I have checked that both documents are loading up the same version of word (same license number and version) and am stumped......I have norton installed on my PC so at the moment am debating if there is a problem with that when it is scanning the ntl delivered document (if it is) or maybe even if my outlook needs reinstalling.I can't blame ntl if the document forwards to yahoo ok.reopening the attachments for both sources several times and I get the same result so it isn't a one-off glitch.....Confused? Oh yes....

There are a handful of ways to adjust file-type association. One such way is to right-click the Word Document and go to Open with > Choose default program.Either choose among the Recommended programs, or the list of Other programs, or click the Browse button and choose a program yourself (assuring you find the program executable itself, not a setup file for the program). After choosing the appropriate program for that file-type, click the checkbox next to "Always use the selected program for this type of file."Click Ok and the file should open in that program. Additionally, all other files of that same file-type should open in that program too, unless file-type association is later adjusted.Apologies if I don't respond to your reply immediately. Dear Friends,

My O.S. is XP Home Edition and I use Microsoft Word 2000. I am the Secretary of an organisation in our village and type out on Word the Minutes of our meetings, save them into a folder and then post them on to our village web site. If I then go to the web site and click on the link to the Minutes Archive they open and can be read without a problem.

A very good friend of mine has Windows 7 for her O.S. and has Microsoft Word 2010 installed, if she goes to the Minutes Archive on the web site and clicks on a particular file it does not open but an error message appears headed "File Extension", which gives three choices, Find, Save or Cancel. I clicked on Find which gave a choice of two downloads which seemed to indicate that the Minute files would then open, but after downloading both they still would not open. So I clicked on Save, saved the particular file into a folder on the computer, then went to the folder, double clicked on the file and the particular set of Minutes opened and could be read.

Although my friend can now access and read the Minutes it is a bit of a long winded way of achieving this and I wondered whether any kind person had any thoughts as to why my friend cannot access the Minutes direct from the web site.

Thank you for reading this.

I have Windows XP on my computer and I run Outlook Express 6. I have used ACDSee 3.1 as my default photo program since August 2003. Today I attempted to open an email with an attached Word document. After clicking on the attachment icon, the usual screen giving the option of open/save did not appear. Instead, the ACDSee program kicked in and opened up to a black screen. This has never happened before. After checking older emails with attachments I found that all Word/Excel files are doing this. I checked the files associated with ACDSee to make sure .doc files did not somehow get in there and the programs shown appear to be ok. I have not to my knowledge changed any settings.
What do I do? I've looked all over the computer files for a solution. Can you help?

Answer:Converting a Microsoft WDB to a Word document

If you can save the file on the older computer as a .csv file it will open in Excel if you have that on the laptop. As far as I'm aware .wdb files are database documents so you'll probably struggle to open it in any word processing program without the use of a third party file converting program. I could well be wrong there though.

That is, a dialog box appears with the message "Microsoft Word has stopped working". Details of the problem are shown below. Is there any way to determine why this particular document crashes when all other Word documents work fine?

Note: I scanned the laptop last night with Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, Avira, TDSSKiller. I ran CHKDSK and SFC. And I used Seagate's SeaToolsForWindows to check the integrity of the laptop hard drive. None of these tools indicated that there were any problems with the laptop.

Answer:Microsoft Word crashes when one particular document is scrolled

Based on the error message, there is an add-in in Word that is causing the document to crash. Try opening Word in safe mode by opening a command prompt, and type in winword.exe /safe. Or, go to the Start menu, find the Office 2010 folder, hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on Office, and keep holding the Ctrl key until you are prompted if you want to open it in Safe mode.

If you can open the document and scroll through it without issues, the problem is one of your add-ins.

You can disable add-ins by going to File>Options and selecting add-ins. Unfortunately, it will be a process of trial and error to determine which add-in may be causing the issue.

I'm using Office 2007 with Windows 7 Ultimate in this case.

I have changed the default settings for Word (font, line spacing, etc.) and new Documents to open with my settings when I open them from the Word shortcut (to the .exe file in Program Files). I followed this guide: How do I... Change the normal template in Word 2007 to my preferences? This works fine.

But when I open a new document from the right-click context menu, it always goes back to the old default settings (with Calibri font, etc.), even if I redo the settings again.

The "Normal.dotm" file in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates folder has my changed settings. Where does the context-new word document get the old settings? I've looked at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx but would not like to alter the ShellNew key without guidance.

Any suggestions for untangling this would be most welcome.

Answer:Context menu - New - Microsoft Word Document

Try restarting your computer after changing the template, Word might still be using the old Normal.dotm.

I am using Office 2000 with XP Pro, IE8, and SP3. I had three pages typed in MS Word for a newspaper article and lost everything except the first two paragraphs. I've never had this happen, so I certainly have no idea of what caused the problem. I was wondering if there is anyway to recover my information, there was a great deal of thought and work involved in this document. I would greatly appreciate any help I may receive, this has been energy draining as I have tried to recover this information to no avail.

Thanks for any help someone may be willing to offer.

Hello,

Can anyone offer some assistance. I am currently working on a 5 page Microsoft word 2000 document and I have not inserted any page or section breaks. The strange thing is that faint dotted lines appear accross each page when I view it in normal view. I can't seem to delete the dotted lines. When I attempt to print the document it prints out around 60 pages with a few lines of text on each page.

Many thanks for your help.

Andrea
