Preferred Solution: Can you create virtual pc on an external drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can you create virtual pc on an external drive?

Yes, You will be able to run Virtual PC on external hard drive. You can follow the below article that will give you information on ?Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode?:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681737(WS.10).aspxYou can also refer the below link that will give you information on ?Download Windows XP Mode?:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspxYou can also check out the below link for more information on Virtual PC.http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/Important Note: After installing Virtual PC on an external hard disk, to use Windows XP from within Virtual PC, the external hard disk has to be connected to the same computer. First you've to launch Virtual PC from the Start menu and then launch Windows XP. Launching Virtual PC by connecting the external hard disk to a different computer will not work.Hope this helps.

Hi,

I had Hyper-V and Ubuntu running on Windows 8 no problem. I've since done a fresh install to 8.1, and I can no longer create an External Virtual Switch. The button for "Create Virtual Switch" is grayed out when I select "External". I can create Internal and Private switches, but not External. There's no error or message so I'm having difficulty troubleshooting. All of the tutorials I've seen don't talk about any configuration I would need to do before creating an external switch. Any ideas? I have the default Windows 8.1 firewall and antivirus stuff.

Thanks,

Garrett

Update:
I tried creating the Virtual Switch in PowerShell with the following commands

Code:
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-NetAdapter

Name InterfaceDescription ifIndex Status MacAddress LinkSpeed
---- -------------------- ------- ------ ---------- ---------
Ethernet Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller 3 Up B8-97-5A-13-7C-E6 1 Gbps

Code:
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> New-VMSwitch -Name "TestNew" -NetAdapterName "Ethernet" -AllowManagementOS $True

New-VMSwitch : Cannot find a physical network adapter named Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

Answer:Cannot Create External Virtual Switch (Grayed out)

So I think it was the Nvidia network chipset drivers that were causing the problem. I just went into device manager, uninstalled my Realtek ethernet drivers, and reinstalled. Hyper-V can now create an external switch. Just in case anyone runs into this issue again.

Hi. No matter which program I use I can't create a virtual drive. I've tried different versions of Daemon's Tool, Alcohol 120%, CD Image, and so on with no success.

Some of them will act as if they did successfully create a virtual drive but it won't really exist.

Also,.. I am missing my ASPI layer and I cannot install any either. I already tried both versions of Force ASPI 1.7 & 1.8.

I am trying to create a virtual drive for Win7 ULT 64 from a backup copy of a Win7 ULT 64 system that will not boot, seemingly because the second Sector is Unwriteable.  Chkdsk returns no errors, except the last
statement about the log file being unwrittable to the second sector.

I am going to install Win7 Ult on a 240 G SSD drive in a USB 3.0 enclosure and then will create a win7 virtual machine to run the virtual disk.  Since the virtual disk is a g0od part of a 1 TB drive and the SSD is only 240 GB, will that pose a problem, or can I run it from the virtual machine on the SSD in the USB enclosure and just point to a bigger drive?

I somewhat understand the concept, just from reading, but do not have practical experience or training.

Thanks for any info and guidance

Answer:I am trying to create a virtual drive for Win7 ULT 64

If the backup is that big 1TB and the HD itself is that size then you're going to have a problem converting as not enough space there to swap. You would need a larger drive or a secondary drive. There is a tool to take a disk and make it into a virtual .VHD file that can be mounted in the system manager, Virtual PC, vmware etc. However, there is no way to convert the vhd back. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx

I am trying to create a virtual copy of my 120GB XP Home hard drive.
I have 2 applications that should do that, but both fail in seemingly different ways.

1) Sysinternals Disk2vhd
I can browse to my usb external hard drive, but the list of volumes to include is empty.
I cannot see or select a drive to copy.

2) Paragon Go Virtual
I can select the drive to copy and browse to my usb hard drive with no problem.
The copy process starts, but then fails with the error volume exclusive access is required to complete the operation.

Both of these applications are supposed to use vss, and the vss service is running in task manager.

Can someone suggest what the problem might be, or how I can bypass these obstacles and create a virtual hard drive for use in Virtual PC?

Thanks,
G

I had this installed a while back and it worked just fine, needed to use it for something else today so I downloaded and installed the new version, whenever I try to create a new virtual drive to mount an image to I get the error:
"DAEMON Tools Pro driver error -1"
I am running windows xp and I'm using Daemon Tools Lite, not sure on how to check what version of it I am running.
I have already tried reinstalling the program and restarting my computer, I have searched the problem in google and have found some people that are having the same problem but no solutions.
I would love any help I can get, thanks guys!

Hey Guys,
Im rebuilding someones laptop and since they are always managing to break it im installing quite a bit of security so they couldn't break it even if they wanted to.

I have a problem though, im going to hide the C:\ so they dont decide to have some fun with the windows directory or something. Now by hide, i dont mean the attribute im actually going to make the drive invisible to them and it will also prevent direct access. They can still use the things on there, they just cant open it themselves. For example typing "C:\windows\cmd.exe" into an IE bar will be disallowed but typing cmd into the start menu will be allowed.

However, my problem is that the user folder is on the C:\. Now i noticed in my school they create a separate drive for personal files and that drive is not hidden. I want to do that, but i dont know how to;
Create a virtual disk.Change the user personal file locationAny help on this would be nice and I will rep you
Thanks

btw, i never had any problems with those programs, but now i just updated my vista to Windows 7 beta... and plzz dont tell me that its the window's fault, cuz i really don wanna unistall it or anyting cuz i like it..

Answer:Instaling Deamon tools/ and other programs that create virtual drive..

Hi

So which OS was this happening in Vista or Windows 7?

If its Windows 7 beta, TBH as its beta its not the best move to make in trying to resolve this issue if its happening in Vista, so I would rollback to Vista and sort this issue out their before trying Windows 7 beta out as I know that the reboot > reinstall message constantly in Daemon Tools is as this app is not 100% Windows 7 compatible, others are having same issue and some mention CloneDrive works fine so give that app a go first tho.

Hard drive crash enquiry
My hard drive recently crashed on my desktop running XP and due to the discontinuation of support for XP, I decided to upgrade with a new motherboard, memory, hard drive etc., now running Win 8.1, which has been working fine so far. My problem is that there is data and pictures on the old hard drive which I would like to recover. Can someone advise whether it would be practical to re-install the failed drive along side my new HD in my desktop and reboot as normal and then try and access the failed drive like an external drive? I have already tried booting from the failed drive alone which did not get past the BIOS stage before switching off. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Answer:Create an external drive from a hard driveHard drive crash

IIf the drive is Sata I or II then you can get a USB 2.0 Docking Station for around $20. Plug it in the USB port and slide the drive in. See if you can read it. If it doesn't work the dock is still handy to have.

My mom's friend's laptop died. I pulled the hard drive from it and put it in a usb 2.0 enclosure. I was wondering if there is any software that could boot, from a windows xp enviroment, a virtual desktop based on the files on the hard drive? This would make it tremendously easier for her to recover files, any ideas guys?

I have a 1 TB hard drive that is being used a lot. The format is NTFS or FATS, (sorry if those are not spelt correctly) windows hard drive. Anyways - there is like 400 gig spare. Can I simply go in and use gparted or something similiar and make a partition for a linux backup (which is ext4)

(I know this is a windows forum but u guys are the best! You are all v informed)

So basically from your experience if I do this is there a strong chance that the data on the drive will be hosed if I introduce a linux partition?

Thanks a lot

Answer:Can I create a partition in a (used) external hard drive?

Yes indeed. If you don't have an internal hard drive portable case, just power off your computer, hold the power button in for a minute to discharge all electricity, open the case, plug the older hard drive into the IDE or SATA cable for a secondary hard drive, (keep the case open to watch all fans), plug in the power cable, press the power button. The system will see the old hard drive and assign it a driver and may want to reboot; that's OK. Now after reboot, go to Windows Manager (Right click computer, choose Manage). Choose Disk Management, point at the older hard drive, right click your mouse and choose Format. When prompted, choose NTFS and format the entire disk. When it's done.....voila! You now have a second internal hard drive that you can use for backing up an Image of your C: Drive (Highly Recommended) and for storing all kinds of files like music, videos etc. rather than keeping them on the C: Drive and filling it up. (see image)

My T61 comes with only CD-RW/DVD. So if I make recovery disc, instead of creating 5-8 CDs, can I make recovery disc to external DVD drive? So only 1 DVD is enough? Thanks for answer.Jasper

Answer:Create Recovery Disc to External DVD Drive?

I haven't tried it, but it shouldn't be a problem. After the function has gathered the infos it needs it will ask which device it should write to, you should be able to select the usb drive.
Please note, the first disc needs to be a cd as boot cd, then you can create a recovery dvd.

I am able to create a system image of my Win 7 x64 drive. But if I had to restore the system image, it seems I would need a Win 7 bootable CD with external drive support, as my drive system image is on an external drive.
Windows backup does make a System Repair CD but that is for repair of Win 7; or can it be used for the System Image restore operation?
If not, how would I make a bootable Win 7 CD with external drive support?
Thanks in advance to the system experts.

Answer:Unable to create new folders on external hard drive

To clarify, you are creating folders on the external hard drive, not the laptop's drive? I know that's what your title says, but still want to make sure. Since you are doing such a simple task and receiving a catastrophic failure, it could be that the external drive is having hardware issues. My Thinkpad T420 hard drive crashed in a really bad way. I can't load windows (7) and windows repair says it can't help me. I removed my hard drive and put it in a usb enclosure and connected it to a different pc. I can see the recovery folder/drive and my data drive as two different drives in "my computer". What I'm trying to figure out is if there's a way I can create the Win7 recovery discs this way, through what is now an external hard drive. The backup PC I'm using is XP, but I can get another Win7 PC if that makes a difference. TIA!

I recently got an 2TB external hard drive and realized that I wasn't using over half of it. So, I tried to use some of that space as virtual memory because sometimes my computer would freeze while playing games due to little memory left. When I tried it, however, it didn't work. I was wondering how I would get a paging file on the external hard drive.

Answer:How do you create paging file on external hard drive?

Page file must always be available, even before the USB disk is ready for use. Not sure why you need a page file on external drive, though.

Also reading and writing to external hard disk will be much slower that on the internal bus. You may have to keep the external HDD connected while turning system on every time which negates the point of having an external HDD.

The Background:
Yesterday a computer in our office started misbehaving. Over the weekend, several Windows updates were installed. On Monday the user would open windows explorer and within 30 seconds or so he was prompted with a message saying something to the effect of, "windows encountered an error and had to close". All the windows including software such as Outlook and AutoCad would then close. There was no restart or shut down, just everything closing. This happened repeatedly.

I instructed him to find a restore point. He later told me the only restore points available were from Friday and then over the weekend, so he chose the latest one, that being Friday. After the restore was complete, the machine began to run through the normal boot process. However, once the windows symbol fully displayed, it would go to the black screen that normally briefly appears before your desktop appears, but the desktop never appears. The machine beeps and then re-boots. After the re-boot, you get the normal screen that prompts you with two choices, launch a repair or start normally. In either case, you get the same result as I just mentioned.

The Question:
Unfortunately, a system image of the troubled machine was never created. I pulled the hard drive and with a SATA adapter I connected it to a working machine and was able to read the drive with no problems. Can I create a system image of the now "external hard drive"? I'm 90% sure that it shouldn't make a difference, that it doesn't has to be a SATA / SAS internal slave drive for you to create that drive image. But I never create a win 7 disk image on a USB Ext. hard drive before. Has any1 done it? Any difference than creating on a SATA internal drive?

Answer:Can you create your disk image on an external USB hard drive?

No difference.

I've done it with Clonezilla and imaged my laptop's hard drive to an external 2TB hard drive. I booted up into Clonezilla Live at bootup, restored the image to the laptop's hard drive, restarted and booted into the OS without issue.

Probably only difference I have to say is noticeable is the transfer speeds. Internal SATA hard drive probably would have done it faster than a USB2.0 connection to the external hard drive.

"How to Create a System Image in Windows 8 and 8.1" at System Image - Create in Windows 8

includes the following approach for create multiple system images on a single external drive. Will this approach work in Windows 10?
==========================================
METHOD TWO:

1. Navigate to the backup location above for where you saved a system image that you want to keep before creating a new system image.

2. Right click, or press and hold, on the WindowsImageBackup folder, and click/tap on Rename.

3. Rename it to something like WindowsImageBackup-Copy-1, press Enter, and click//tap on Yes if prompted by UAC.
NOTE: This way you can just easily change the 1 an the end of the name to 2, 3, 4, etc... for each new system image that you make a copy of.

4. You now have a different system image version that you can leave at this location to be able to keep multiple versions.
NOTE: When you want to restore a system image in a renamed WindowsImageBackup-Copy-1 folder in the future, then you must rename the current WindowsImageBackup folder first, then rename the WindowsImageBackup-Copy-1 folder back to WindowsImageBackup in order to be able to restore it. The WindowsImageBackup folder must be in the root directory of the drive, and not within another folder.

Answer:Can I create multiple system images on a single external drive?

Hello Robert,

Yes, you can use the same method in Windows 10 to create and save multiple system images on the same drive.

Hi! I do not know when and why did this happen but whoever invented this paranoid (hidemysecretsfrommywife) control system of sharing and permissions should be declared as the Enemy of Mankind, or the Antichrist!
I can understand that one wants to protect C: from malwares. But have you seen a malware attacking an external drive???

I have Windows7, I have an external drive where I store all my pictures taken and my music files. I already tried everything advanced sharing and so on. Still: I can only create a new folder with a right click in the drive or inside existing folders but I can not do anything else. The disk is write protected, check write permissions.
In fact, the disk isn't write protected.

If I create a new folder, I can put in it and do whatever I want inside the new folder. But I have no permission to do anything outside a new folder, i.e. with my original media files!

Why? Who does benefit from this? What is this craziness???

Answer:[SOLVED] No permission to create/ move, copy, delete files in external hard drive

1. Start > Run "cmd" (this opens a command prompt window)
2. type--> diskpart (this will open another command window in a few seconds)
3. type--> list volume (this will list all of the volumes currently recognized in your system)
4. type--> select volume # (this number is going to be your external drive)
5. type--> attributes disk clear readonly

I will say this: this procedure has been met with mixed results and your problem may return. Some have even had this issue and it turned out to be a setting in Windows Media Player of all things (whoda thunk?) One responder in a forum had this to say about this very problem: what i found to fix this was to remove the settings in media player allowing it to re-organize and rename files, after which i went to the tools/advanced/restore media library and allowed it to dump my current library and reset it. That's just an FYI.

I hope that'll help. Let me know.

Good day!

Mike

PS: As an afterthought, you may need to log in to the REAL administrator account (which needs to be activated manually) and set your permissions there for your regular user name. We'll go down that path if the above procedure doesn't net you anything positive.

Is it possible to create recovery disc files on an external hard drive?  I tried using the Lenovo Recovery System from the Start menu (Windows 7) but it says it requires 30 DVDs.  My external hard drive is connected, but it doesn't display in the drive drop-down.  (I'm not a hard drive person...) Thanks.

I am working on my sisters Toshiba L655d-S5055 notebook. windows 7, 3gb, amd v120 processor, 250gb drive. Started with error msg at boot "encountered a problem communicating with a device at startup......". Couldn't get by this error. took out drive, inserted into usb-enclosure, and tested. numerous sector errors. She has also lost the recovery disks I made for her. I used partition software to scan just the recovery partition, and there are no errors reported there. What I would like to do, is to copy to a flash drive, or make new recovery dvd's from this recovery partition; then I can use the coa from the back of the notebook (if necessary) for full install onto a new hard drive. However, I can't use the toshiba notebook for this; I can only use my desktop pc for the xfer; using the toshiba hard drive as a usb external drive, and the toshiba media creator software will not install onto my desktop pc (doesn't give me a reason). I would prefer to go the dvd-route, but flash drive would be ok, too. Any info is appreciated. thanks.

My Win7 computer fails to create a System Image to my new Samsung M3 500GB external hard drive which is connected via a USB3.0 cable to a USB3.0 port on my computer. My PC reports that "The backup failed" and "The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)". My system has 8GB RAM and the Samsung external drive (NTFS file system) is recognised by the PC and I can manually read & write from/to it so it is working fine. I believe one cause can be an Nvidia USB EHCI chipset but my PC does not have this chipset. It is an Intel chipset. Microsoft support pages http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979281 and 976972 are not applicable to my problem. Any suggestions as to how I can copy a System Image to my external hard drive via USB 3.0 cable? Could it be that I need an external drive which uses an ATA cable interface? If so then I have wasted £48 on the Samsung USB device.
Thanks

Answer:Can't create a "System Image" to external USB drive

Go get yourself a copy of Acronis and just do a clone of your disc, simples and easy.

Hi there everyone,

I have a small computer that i use for server, but i want to make it a gateway using ICS, but i need 2 NIC for it to work, so i want to create a Virtual NIC so that i could do ICS and make other computer on my LAN connect with the Virtual NIC.

Thanks in advance

Answer:How do i create a Virtual NIC

You can do this with the Microsoft Loopback Adapter which is a driver for a virtual network card.

Depending on the licensing you might be able to use the TUN/TAP driver that is part of OpenVPN, see here for details.

Using tuntap under Windows

By Dmitri Varsanofiev

The tun-tap driver is extremely useful for implementing IP tunnels under both Linux and Windows. While the tun-tap driver is a quite popular part of modern Linux and is well documented, its open-source Windows counterpart (developed by Damion K. Wilson and James Yonan) is relatively unknown.

The goal of this page is to provide instructions and examples of use of the tuntap under Win32. I have chosen C#/.Net for the code sample simply to keep the code short and to the point; the sample uses no true .NET features and can be easily rewritten into any other language. For simplicity, the sample also assumes that only one tuntap driver is present in the system, and a fixed static IP allocation address for the tun network (10.3.0.1:255.255.255.0).

How to get tuntap for Windows

The Win32 tuntap code is a part of OpenVPN project. Download the source (I used 2.0.9), unzip the subdirectory tap-win32, and use the Windows DDK "build" command to build the driver. You will also need a config-win32.h file from OpenVPN in the directory above the tap-win32.

Tuntap installation under Windows

Only two files are relevant for the installation, the driver itself (default name is tap0801.sys) and the corresponding .inf f... Read more

I want to 'keep' a disc on my pc rather than having to insert it each time. I remember being able to do this one time with a program I have(?). Copy my physical disc to a virtual disc on the PC. Hope this is clear.

Answer:create virtual cd xp

That would be an "image" of the original CD. There are a few different programs that can create these "images". Many programs use their own formats for these "images", but most should support the .ISO standard format. Some of the others are :- .NRG, .MDS, .UIF, .CCD, and there are more. I try to stick with the standard .ISO format. Some of the programs that can create .ISO images are :- MagicISO, PowerISO, Alcohol120%, etc. You'll probably find that your burning software can make images, but may need to use a non-standard format. Look for a setting to save in .ISO format. You'll also need to install a virtual CD/DVD drive, in order to mount the image file for use. Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

The notion of Windows booting from a USB sounds familiar when I firstly heard about Windows To Go. As a virtualization technology enthusiast, I have mentioned in my previous articles that softwares like Prayaya V3 and Hopedot VOS can be a very easy-to-mange portable workspace creator as well. An obvious resemblance between them is that you can take Windows home with you from work only with a tiny USB drive rather than a heavy laptop. But it?s Windows 8 this time. I have to admit that I am really looking forward to its final release in October.
What we are talking here is not portable applications or something like that. It is about carrying the whole PC environment on a USB to any accessible PC or laptops. If you want to experiment with Windows To Go but do not want to order a new certified USB drive, you can create your own Windows To Go USB drive. Get ready a 32 GB or larger USB 3.0 drive (it can also be an external hard drive) and build the USB drive on at a Windows 7 or 8 PC. Another thing you need is Windows 8 DVD ISO and Windows 8 Developer Preview Product Key. The process is a little complicated in my view.
What if you are using Windows 7, XP, Vista or older systems and you don?t have a 32GB 3.0 USB drive? Hopedot VOS will be a good choice for you to experiment how you can bring your corporate PC to your home PC. It only requires a fast speed USB (or external hard drive) and a PC using Windows 32 bits system. The installation of Hopedot VOS is as easy as any othe... Read more

Answer:How do I create more Virtual Memory?

Why would you want to? Virtual Memory settings are best left for Windows to sort out, to be honest with you.And anyway, I doubt you'll see any benefit in increasing it - in fact, you'll probably land up slowing your computer down significantly, as more data is transferred between the HDD and memory.

I just need to make a fake IP address for a one of directory located at xampp/htdocs folder. so I can edit the host file and put my fake IP and my fake domain (abc.net) there. Finally when I enter that fake domain on my web browser's address bar, it should display the directory of my xampp folder. excuse my bad English. hope you help me. Thanks.

Answer:How Can I Create Virtual IP address?

You can't create a fake IP as such. You can add a secondary IP to your current nic in a private IP range. If you really need a faux non-working IP then maybe you could assign an IP to a serial connection or get a a usb nic or even go so far as to install a virtual machine to use as target.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. Can you create a virtual desktop? I think there are programs out there, but I don't know what programs are good and what are completely junk that works with Win7, any advice would be good.

Answer:Create a virtual desktop?

I'm going to mention virtual desktop software I just found via Google search; I have not used it.  It's called WindowsPager and you can get some info and download it from http://www.windows7.cc/windows-7-software/windows-7-virtual-desktop-manager/.  I suggest you read the user comments at the lower part of that web page; some comments are good, some are bad.  And, at least two alternative programs are mentioned in those comments. If you try WindowsPager, please let us know how you like it.

My c: drive stopped working, so I installed a new drive, copied a lot of files from back up, and I think merged some Registries. I had my old Virtual XP machines working, complete with their programs installed. Then I did "one more thing" to the
Registry and crashed the newly installed Windows 7 and had to start over. This time I decided I didn't want to add a lot of garbage from my backup and old Registries, so I just copied needed files. However, now I can't get Virtual XP to work. I've run the
system check file, and it says my system can handle virtual machines. I've checked Windows Features, and it has a check mark for Virtual PC. When I install Windows XP (WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe), it completes the install, but, when I click to open it with Finish,
it says it can't.  When I try to install Virtual PC from Microsoft's current installation page (Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu), it says it isn't compatible with my version of Windows.  I found the original Virtual PC file from backup
(Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu), and it says it's already installed.  The Windows Virtual PC folder says it's empty.  When I click a previous machine that opened before, it tells me there is no configuration file.

Answer:Could not create the java virtual machine

It looks like you have a corrupted java installation.

Can you go to add/remove programs in windows control panel, and remove all the Java Runtime Environment installed ?

Next, open the browser and visit java.com: Java + You. Click on the "Download Now" button. And follow the instructions displayed, it should install the latest Java Platform on your machine, and also verify the installation is successful.

I was playing almost every-day a game called Minecraft and one day all of a sudden an error came up with a pop-up window saying "Could not create java virtual machine". I've been trying to find a solution but nothing succeded! Please help me!!!!!!!!

Answer:Could not create java virtual machine!

Are you using Java or Microsoft Java? This sounds like a Microsoft Java problem. Can you do the following for me:

1.

On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.

2.

Type: cmd

3.

At the command prompt, type: jview
If a message displays information about Java, you have the MSJVM installed on your computer.
If a message displays 'Jview' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file, you do not have the MSJVM installed on your computer.

This will tell me if you have MSJVM installed. Would you also check your installed version of java under the control panel and ensure you are running a current version.

I have tried all the suggestions in your forum (uninstall java, reinstall, put in the new environment variables, etc.) but nothing is working. I have a feeling it has to do with being on Windows 8. When you load Java, you get the warning that Java for Windows 8 is only supported in desktop mode, not start screen mode.
Is the issue just that the version of Java we need (to run mods for Minecraft) won't work on a Windows 8?

Instead of changing desktops to view different applications just scroll horizontally.

Hi,

In my company we have a single network. I now need that some computers (4 of them) will have some kind of a seperate network between them for some tests.

They MUST be disconnected from the main network. How can I perform that? I don't have a smart switch or router.
- Can the switch on/off this "other" network?
- What are my option? and/or where can I read/learn more.

Thanks

you can get a dumb switch/hub and connect the computers to it. just dont connect the switch to the main network and youd be ok. just give them all static ips so they can communicate.

Its all about complication process, so there should be no problems as long you have a huge amount of storage to put for virtual images. Make your style unique and the result will be same at all.

Hey all,

I was wondering about something I made few attempts, but they all failed.

I work in an 70+ user organization and in order to install new computers I use WDS to push images through the network. Now, obviously it's possible to get a computer and set up images on it all the time, but I wouldn't have the option to have such a PC only for myself, thus I would have to go through hoops to update the image (like, get another PC, install the image, update the image and then push it back into the WDS).

In the past, I attempted to use Virtual PC in order to create an image, however, it failed to run on an actual PC. This time I've got VirtualBox, but the question remains: can I use a virtual machine as an image-creating one? Are there some limitations or steps needed to be done in order to make it work?

TIA.

Answer:Using virtual machines to create production images

I think its only unidirectional; you can convert a real image into a virtual install but not a real image from virtual because there would be no way to anticipate the hardware abstraction layer requirement.

The only way I know is the option you weren't thrilled about, a clone of the computers you push the image to. Otherwise pushing just the updates through the network to each system wtihout reimaging a master might be possible?

Hello,

I've been messing around with this for too long, and can't find any help from Symantec. I do think I've done something silly or just plain dumb to cause my problem.

I've been using Ghost for awhile now, and never had any problems. We got in a slew of new Gateways and I can't create images of them. I install the client manually on my model computer, and then hop on the ghost server to make my image. In the Ghost Console I make a create image task, point to the desired computer, make a new image file for it, check my sysprep settings, and get ready to rock.
Then, I get this error: "There are machines in the task that may use the Virtual Partition but do not have a valid template." Then something about "it may fail", and it sure does. Now... I think I'm missing something simple here. I want to use the Virtual Partition, because I'm running everything off the console, but I know not what template it refers to.
The new computers don't have floppy drives, so I'm turning to a BartPE disk if I can't get this to work over the network. But, I'd /really/ like it to.

Thanks -mmX

I have a Virtual PC running Windows XP and I changed the Network Adapter to use my home network to download an ISO image for VS2010. That worked but now when I start my Virtual PC and go to My Computer it reads my host PC's C drive and not the Virtual PC's C drive. Can anyone help me to 'reset' my Virtual PC to use the virtual C drive again? I found this problem when I went to mount the ISO image to install VS2010 that the virtual C drive icon was looking at my host C drive and not the virtual C drive.

Answer:Virtual PC 2007 does not use virtual C drive

Virtual pc can not access your host drive as a virtual drive. Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Okay, so i looked around the site and the web, but no one can give me an answer. I'm used to using virtual drives (I started on Daemon Tools Lite and graduated to MagicDisk) but I don't know how to trick other programs to write to the virtual drive as they would write to any real drive. I have a Power Director project that I knew was going to be too big to to write to a normal disc and figured i would try to get the program to write to one of MagicDisk's drives. Problem is, it doesn't see the MagicDisk drives. It always lists my physical drive, never a virtual one. Is there a program/trick I can do to convince Windows, Power Director and any other program that my virtual drives aren't fake? And will it still limit it's recording space as if it's a real disc or will the drive send back that the image is an infinitely large disc? Any help will be much appreciated. And I have tried to tell Power Director to just put all the files out as folders so I could make my own iso, but it won't cooperate. Thank you in advance!

Is it usb powered? If so does the hard drive spin up? Are there any clicking noises from the drive?

So, I installed Windows 8 in a virtual environment on VMWare Player, and saved the virtual drive onto my external HDD, which had more storage than my internal drives. However, the external drive doesn't show up in the virtual machine, and I was wondering if it was because that's where the virtual machine is installed. If not, any tips on how to get it to be recognized would be fantastic.

Answer:External HDD and Virtual Machine

VMware should have a setting for default .vdi (or whatever VMware uses) locations.

I use VirtualBox, so the settings may be different.

Hi --

I wrapped a now-out-of-service XP-based system into a virtual machine loaded onto a SeaGate portable HD (FreeAgent). Been using it for two years periodically with no problems. Use VMWare Player to access from a fairly new HP Pavilion Win 7 machine. While I always "eject" properly to remove the USB-connected device, yesterday my Chrome froze and after trying to end task, I was forced to shut it down -- and forgot to eject properly but had not removed it from the USB. After reboot, I did eject the Seagate HD.

Today, I wanted to see if I could run a flatbed HP scanner that only runs on XP by loading up the XP virtual machine and running the scanner from it. Won't run, obviously, under the Win7 OS. Sooo, I plugged it into the USB port and up comes a message saying that that drive (K) had to be reformatted for the drive to display. Didn't want to do that. Clicked cancel. Then -- still hopeful -- I ran the VMPlayer, which wanted an OK to install a new version. I clicked no (for now) and machine froze...temporarily... mouse came back eventually but sloggy... I shut the whole dang thing down and removed the external drive and then rebooted. It rebooted fine.

I then plugged the Seagate back in and once again got the message telling me the drive in K had to be reformatted before it could be used and did I want to proceed. I clicked no...and then I did the eject. I then tested the Seagate on a laptop. After install of the driver, it ga... Read more

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V enabled. When I had Windows 8 I could install a Virtual switch with out any problems, since upgrading I can not install a Virtual Switch with External or Internal settings.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but when I look at the Ethernet properties never "Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch" or "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol" are ticked. I have tried ticking them but get the error message "Could not add the requested feature. The error is: The data is invalid". I have checked that I am using the latest and correct driver for the card.

Any help gratefully received.

Answer:Can not install Virtual Switch external in Hyper-V

I think it is a hardware problem - when I switch on the computer today there was no internet connection. Looking in the Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the Broadcom Netlink and the message says "this device cannot start (code 10).

I will get a network card and see what happens!

I want to create a USB Recovery Drive for my Windows 10 PC but so far have been unable to do so. When I click on the button to create a drive I get a message saying 'We can't create the drive now'. No explanation of why, no pointers to what can be done about it.
I have run the scans SFC and DSIM and errors have been repaired but this has not solved the problem, I still get the message that we cannot create the drive.
I have a suitable USB drive ready. It was used for the 8.1 Recovery Drive. When I do get the Drive creation function working will it automatically delete these files or should I format the drive first?

Answer:Cannot create a USB Recovery Drive: We cannot create the drive now

Looks like many are receiving this error: We can't create the recovery drive. A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive. There is a long thread on this at Microsoft Answers with no solution being offered by Microsoft.
A few ideas:
Make sure your Windows 10 is activated.
Try to create the recovery drive after booting in Clean Boot State and see if it works.
If you want to use the recovery drive for only when your PC does not start or to reset it, then uncheck the Back up system files to the recovery drive option and see if you can now create it. But when you uncheck this option, you will not be able to use it to reinstall Windows. It will be useful pnly if Windows 10 does not start or if you need to reset Windows 10. Regarding your question in the last line, you may format and use it. In any case, everything on the USB will get deleted during the creation process.

I believe most Fn keys are driver dependent. The Fn key on an external keyboard can generally not perform the calls of the laptop keyboard because the Fn keys are hardware specific; they are not regular keyboard keys and can't be remapped.

You can review more information on the workings of Fn keys by visiting the following site;

Hi:

I'm setting up a windows server 2003 box, and for the life of me, I can't decide whether or not to name the AD domain the same as my external domain name. Some people suggest naming the internal as mydomain.local; therefore, it doesn't conflict with the internet domain of mydomain.com... Or should I name them the same?

If this help's, I am also planning to setup Exchange Server 2003 in this box.

thanks in advance

Answer:AD: create same internal&external name, or different

I found DNS simpler and more secure if you use .local

HelloI keep my files on my external hard drive. I want to backup such files to another external drive. Can you suggest me a backup/sync solution please?Incremental and automated backup would be nice.I use Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS.I prefer simple to use, reliable software. Open source is a plus.Thank you.

Answer:Can you suggest me a backup solution (external drive to external drive)?

I'd use a simple batch file for the Microsoft OS systems, but the Mac system wont like a batch file. I am not sure of any that run on both platforms so your likely looking for 2 different ways to do this.As far as automated, you could have both external drives attached to the system and either have a scheduled task do this or add it to the startup folder so that when the system boots it syncs both drives. Here is one that I have used that is a simple batch file between XP and 7 systems:With my external drives of same capacity and at letters F: and G: , I perform an xcopy from one to the other, and then the other back to the first in case anything was added to the other and not the first.xcopy f:\*.* g:\*.* /s/d/yxcopy g:\*.* f:\*.* /s/d/yThis works for XP and 7 systems, but haven't tested it with 8 or 8.1 yet.Windows 7 introduced Robocopy and so I would perform the same routine but with Robocopy instead which would work with 7 and 8 or 7 and 8.1. If windows 8 or 8.1 has legacy support for xcopy then the method above will work, otherwise it will error out and you will have to make a batch file with robocopy vs xcopy, and robocopy has different switches than the /s/d/y of xcopy. The amount of time it takes to sync up all depends on how much data needs to copy from one to the other. If the drives are almost completely a match with exeception to some added data, then it would be completed pretty quickly, however if your syncing up one drive to the other and the other is f... Hi All

I have attempted to place my page file to an external disk via USB I:, on my Win 7 HP system as I had on my old Vista HP system, to assist in performance.

After setting no pf on C: going through the motions on re-start I get a message indicating that windows has by default created a pf on C:, (I take it this is for memory dump purposes) & on checking the external disk no pf was created although in advanced settings dialogue box a ?system managed? text is indicated against drive I:, the funny thing is on C: the page file size was exactly the same prior to change even though no page file is indicated for C: in the dialogue box.

I tried again leaving a 200mb fixed sized pf for the memory dump on C: but got exactly the same response, system managed pf on I: where no pf exists on the drive.

NB. C: drive has a partition D: by default, of 1 GB.

Has anyone experienced & resolved a similar problem with their own system?

Answer:Can't create Page File on external HDD

I don't believe the operating system will allow you to place your page file on an external drive as it is not normally available at boot time. If you have enough memory then there is a school of thought that you can turn off the page file.
