How to create a new WordPad document?

Question: How to create a new WordPad document?

This is probably a stupid question. I got a new laptop a few days ago, and am very happy with it. There is one small flaw and I am wondering if it can be fixed. When I right click and go to new, whether I be in documents, pictures, a jump drive, etc., there is no WordPad or Rich Text Document option. There is Microsoft Office Word Document, Journal Document, and Text Document as well as other things, however, I prefer WordPad to these. (Microsoft Word is okay to, but I only have a trial and I don't want to buy the full version, and I prefer WordPad regardless.) I know that WordPad is on my computer because I can access it through program files, as well as open documents with it. However it is not an option under New. Note: My laptop has Vista (although I hope to switch to XP soon), not sure if this makes a difference. If there is any way to create new WordPad documents (besides opening WordPad and saving a new document) please let me know! Thanks! -SV

Preferred Solution: How to create a new WordPad document?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You need to use the open file option under File at the top left.
This is a fairly standard Windows action and will apply to most programs.

I need "help" if it can be given to me via email. I am not a computer genius as you will find out. I made a file in the Word Pad icon called PASSWORDS. Today I had to fix my User Name on one of the accounts. I fixed it and then left Word Pad without saving the change I made. Is there and easy way for me to recover my Word Pad Document called "PASSWORDS"? IF there

I am hoping someone out there knows what I should do to get my Document back. I just ,apparently, deleted it about 30 minutes ago and for an 80 year old it was one of my very valuable documents. Please help me if anyone out there can

Answer:Recover Wordpad Document

Welcome to the forums Paul. I've edited your e-mail address out, as it'll get pick up by spambots (it's not a good idea to have e-mail addresses visible online, as you'll end up with a lot of spam). You should get this reply via e-mail through the site automatically, but you'll need to return to the site to post a a reply.

Sadly, I think it's extremely unlikely that you'll be able to recover a Wordpad document that was never saved, as the data was never written to disk (it was just stored in memory) . If it was saved, then deleted, it may have been possible.

There's a very, very slim chance that you may have a .tmp file with the changes in this directory:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\WordPad

A bit of googling shows that some users have that folder and unsaved Wordpad documents have temporary files created there (with unsaved data). I don't have this folder in Windows 10, but depending on your OS, you might. If there is anything in that directory, you could try right-clicking it and use "Open With > Wordpad".

What was the password for? Is it something you can just reset and create another one?

I was writing an important document that I have been working on for a long time in Wordpad and there was some sudden problem with the computer so I had to shut it down. When I tried to reopen it, it listed it as 0KB and completely empty.

Can someone please help me? I haven't saved anything to the file since, and it's still listed as 0kb.. and I don't have a back-up unfortunately.

Answer:Wordpad empties document

With wordpad it has no autosave, you should try an office suite such as MS, or get the free and excellent openoffice.

try running a checkdisk, and if it repairs any files, look in the root of the C:\ Drive for any *CHK files, open them, one *might* be your missing document. I doubt it however.

Hello. Just recently, after running multiple things on my old laptop, it froze. It is still frozen, I haven't rebooted it. Thing is, I had an unsaved WordPad document open, and I want to recover it.

Is there any way I can get it back? Anyway to unfreeze the computer? If I rebooted it, would I still be able to get the document? I didn't once save it throughout making it.

Thanks very much. I appreciate any help.

EDIT: Upon it freezing, I have tried pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE in an attempt to unfreeze it. Nothing has happened yet.

Answer:Recovering a WordPad document?

I don't think that Wordpad keeps a backup copy of a document while writing it.
If it's an exsiting document you were editting you should be able to recover the original one.
I imagine (since you mention old laptop) that it is not Windows 7 and I don't know if earlier versions allow you to recover a previous version like Windows 7 does.

Is there a work-a-round for opening a Microsoft Word 2000 Document in Wordpad. I only have wordpad and keep getting the error in the image below. I found some help topics but none worked.

Answer:Opening MS Word Document In Wordpad

This is a free download program that may work for you here's the site http://www.openoffice.org/#00000002

It is very similar to MS office suites which should allow you to open your .doc files and many others. I used it only once, and I can't remeber how user friendly it is.
There's also viewers provided by Microsoft that should allow you to open MS files even if you don't have the programs. They're located here http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp

Why is it that when I saved a Wordpad document, it automatically saved it as a MS-DOS Application which Windows says it can't open, and is there any way I can I open it. It took me literally hours to write everything down, and even if I could remember every word, I don't want to spend all that time writing it out again. I would appreciate any advice you can give me.

Answer:Wordpad document was saved as a MS-DOS Application.

Well...first of all...no document file can be saved as an application (and expect to work).

A Wordpad document should be saved as a text file, with a file extension of .txt. It can never be saved (and expected to function properly) as a file with an .exe ending, since those are programs, not documents.

What is the full filename (file + extension)?

Example: I have a file titled List, which I create in Wordpad. When I save it, it will appear as List.txt in whichever location I choose to save it.

I guess I have to wonder...where did you get the idea that you created a file and saved it as an MS-DOS application? Did you get an onscreen message stating such?

What was the exact message you received from Windows when you created this wordpad file?

Louis

Answer:Recover unsaved wordpad document?

Yes, download portable version of MiniTool Power Data Recovery, or any number of very good folder/file recovery utilities, onto either DVD or USB stick -- from the stick: you will have to hunt for that file. The recycle bin may even have a prior version of that file. Piriform's Recova is another very good utility for quick N easy file recovery.

How do I recover all that information??

thanks for your help!

Answer:Help! How to recover deleted Wordpad document

What does "it won't go nowhere" mean? Where did you save it? It's not there? It was deleted?

If the file was never saved, then it can't be recovered. If it was saved and somehow deleted, you might be able to recover it.

I was typing in a WordPad document that I've had for a while when suddenly the power (for the whole house) went out. No big deal, I thought. I had saved the document only a few minutes before. But when I turned the PC back on and went into the document, I saw that the entire thing is now just a bunch of squares (http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1138/messedupdoc6sx.jpg). Every word, gone.

Is there any way at all to restore the original data? I tried opening the doc in other word processors, but no success.

If anyone knows a way, I'd really appreciate it if you can tell me.

Answer:WordPad document messed up after power outage.

Saving the document only saves to a temporary file in many applications, that file is "written" back to the main file at document close.

Your document did not close.

Look on the hard drive for all .tmp files around the date and time of the last save, look at the file size as well. If its a few kBs then try renaming the file as .doc or .txt (whatever your original one was) and opening it in Wordpad. The file name will be a random string of letters and numbers. no relationship to the original file.

The .tmp files are normally erased at file save, so one might well still exist at the time of the crash. In fact it should, and hopefully will be readable. Remember to have your settings to display all hidden and system files as well.

If no success, you will need to rely on your backup system that you use to save copies of all important documents. You do have one...?

Using WordPad, how can I get the document address to:1) show on the page? 2) to print with the page?

Answer:How to get wordpad to show & print address of the document?

As per #2. Using &f in the header will automatically put in the file name. With WordPad, which is quite primitive, the only way to put in the full path is to type it there yourself. The header can be used for the file part of this if required but the path cannot be automated.Either of the above will print fine.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Hello there!

I got done after writing this document for three weeks...Suddenly (today), my document appears to be blank. I didn't download anything..Didn't go on any porn sites (surprisingly), or anything. In fact I didn't go on anything after I finally finished my document, which was finished yesterday.

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BwAFALX-xjyKeDAydnBGM0xJRGs

there's the link to the document ^
When I highlight the document, it appears to be words there, it's just nothing shows up. It's as if all my text is white. However, the text is clearly black. The font color is still blank, so I don't understand what's going on here.

It's almost as if things were looking too good in my life, so this of course had to happen to even it out.

No matter, I'll never type and save anything in wordpad ever again, that's for sure.
Oh, and when I tried opening this in Windows XP, it shows a string of squares, so it looks like the file is definitely (mysteriously) corrupted.

Any way to fix this? If anybody fixes this, I'll pay that person 10 dollars via paypal

Thank you very much!

Do the following.Open your Wordpad doc, got to "Edit", then "Select All", or hit CTRL+A to highlight the content. If you cannot see the text after performing this step, then your document is empty. If you can see it, proceed with the next steps. Click "Format", then "Font". Where it says "Color", change it to another color such as maroon. Click "File", then "Save" and then close the document. Reopen it, repeat the same steps and then change the colour of the font to black. Click "File", then "Save". Close the document and then reopen it to verify that the contents are now visible.

Hi,

I want to put links in my text, for use on the same machine or mobile media (CDs or floppies).
I'm using Notepad a lot, but this cant be done in Notepad. I am thinking of putting the address line into notepad, so that this can be copy-pasted into RUN
as a crude form of link, but i am hoping that RTF or Wordpad has the facility to insert a link but i have not been able to find info on this.

Apparently i can insert an 'object' in RTF, but that doesnt seem to be the same thing.

The links i want to insert would be mainly for pictures, and would probably take the form of ... "you can see a picture of this HERE" ... or maybe "to see a pic of this click on this link: C/Picture/item.jpg"

I feel this is a fairly simple action, which might be why i cannot find any info on how to do it.

Cheers, John

I am a big fan of RTF documents as text formatting & image support is all I need in a document. I don't go for word or open office document as they are bulky compared to RTF and I don't use any of their features
wordpad & free editors like PolyEdit strongly support RTF documents having images. But when I copy paste from other apps/web browser the paste happens as plain text in both wordpad and Polyedit.
I even tried AbiWord another editor. I checked all options including "Paste Special" and others
Now i'm doing a hard workaround of opening microsoft word 2003 and pasting the content, saving it as RTF insted of .doc
I'm not a fan of microsoft office word

Hello all, I have a question...
Is it possible to create a template that...
1 - Can be saved as an RTF
and
2 - Can have fields or words that are uneditable?

My situation is this. I have a program (Radiology) that allows you to upload .rtf's that are used as notes in the program. In this case it's used by Ultrasound technicians who have to enter data into these notes. I would like to have it so certain parts of the document can't be deleted or edited (like "Patient Name", "Measurement 1", etc) but them able to enter in that information next to the field ( "Doe, John", "8.3cm", etc).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I called the vendor and they didn't offer much info except that it HAS to be uploaded as an .rtf and can be edited with HTML.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Elaine,

Wordpad comes along with Windows Vista and is used by people as a basic Word Processor.

You don't have to upgrade your Windows Vista but, Word comes bundled with a software package called Microsoft Office 2007. You will have to buy it from an authorized software seller near you. It's expensive though!

Hope my reply have helped your query!

I would like to be able to add the ability to create a new RTF document directly from the right-click menu. For example, right-click the Windows Desktop or within any other folder, click New, then WordPad Document.

How?

I've found various instructions for similar things but none close enough that I've been able to figure out how to do this.

Answer:Solved: How to add "New WordPad Document" to the right-click menu

Open Regedit

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtf

Expand .rtf

If you see a Word.RTF.8, expand it as well and you should see a folder named "ShellNew".

Right-click the"ShellNew" folder and click New > String Value. Rename the string made to "NullFile" without the quotations. Close Regedit.

Right-click your desktop and click New > ... you should see a "RTF Document". This may or may not open directly with WordPad. If it doesn't, you need to set the default program for .RTF documents as WordPad.

I can't create a new file with an .htm extension. I only have the option of creating a .txt file in NotePad. (I'm presuming) that since my file doesn't have the .htm extension, when I double click it I can't view it in Internet Explorer. (I have got the <HTML> & </HTML> tags at beginning and end of the notepad file).

Dear friends,

each time I try to open a particular program (Mathcad 15) I get the message 'Failed to create empty document'.
Then the program goes on but is useless because I cannot open an new or existing document.
In my opinion this is a permission problem because the program runs without a problem within the hidden administrator account.
I tried a lot of things:
running as administrator
setting permissions for the program
taking ownership

nothing works.
This is very annoying because I have a huge library of MCad document I can't open anymore.
Well I could when I login as hidden administrator but this is not a good idea I suppose.

I have searched everywhere on the web and I can't find a solution for it.
I changed my default text editor from notepad to PSPad (Programming), and after that my ability to add New Text Documents by right-clicking and going to New>Text Document has disappeared. I don't know how to fix it, I even tried putting Notepad as the default again, but it didn't work.

Answer:[SOLVED] Can't Create New Text Document

Hi, may not be easy to do this however lets see what you have here. Go to start, search and type regedit the reg editor will open Navigate to:-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNew]
and expand in the right payne look for the string value "Item Name"
it should have this entry against Item Name:-
@%SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe,-470

If not then right click select modify and copy and paste the above into the box. Reboot to take effect.

If you wish you can select file from regedit and export this key to desktop call it txt.reg and if anything goes wrong you can double click it to merge back to registry.

If doing this worries you just tell us what you see in the registry , I can write you a .reg file to do this for you.

I'm trying to create what for all intents and purposes is an e-book that includes some animated figures, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this.It will be a very long text document (circa 80,000 words), which will need to have consistent styles, automated numbering systems for headings, figures, etc, and a means of handling references, such as what you see with EndNote and similar programs. The animations are currently gif images, and they will need to loop when displayed in the document. The final product would be saved as a pdf, which I understand is capable of displaying animations?Does anyone know if it is possible to get Word 2010 to handle animations, and if so, how? I know it's capable of all the other requirements, although it's a bit dodgy and prone to corruption with long documents, so I'll use sub-documents and a good backup system to get around this.Alternatively, does anyone know of a good text editor that would meet all the above requirements? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Answer:How to create a text document with animations

To the best of my knowledge, you can NOT display animation in a Word doc.If you save the document as a Web page, you can see the animation with a browser, but that does not sound like what you have in mind.Powerpoint may be an alternative, but I'm not sure.Alternatively, does anyone know of a good text editor that would meet all the above requirements? Here is a couple of lists:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...http://ebooks-software-review.topte...You can probably find more using a Google search.MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/

I knew how to do this in the old Word, but I can't figure it out in Office 2000 Word. It seems to only want me to do a letter merge. I have a data source document and a basic document that I need to add merge fields to, but I don't see a choice other than letter nor can I figure out how to add the fields where I want them (not as a recipient; it isn't a letter). It was relatively straight forward before, why is it so difficult now?

Answer:Word; create form document

I am currently on 2003, so cannot recreate exactly what you are doing, but I might have a helpful suggestion anyway. If you go to View -> Toolbars -> Mail Merge it should give you the toolbar at the top of the window that will have access to placing merge fields.

Please let me know if this helped you any, or if you found another solution.

(This is about a different, new computer.)

Computer was asleep early this morning, but after SuperAntiSpyware ran, it dir not go back to sleep. Testing showed that automated sleep is not working. Rebooted, got a pop-up box with the text as shown in the title of this message.

Ran the MS diagnostic for this problem, using msconfig; no luck. Googled for the error, not much there, but did try a few things. Turned off router, so not likely to be a address conflict, as one person was able to fix the problem through that route.

Ran another SuperAntiSpyware scan, a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, one with Avast!, and the on-line HouseCall scan; nothing found. I have run a few of Dell's on-line diagnostics, nothing found so far.

I would appreciate knowing how to inoculate the computer, or what spell to cast thereupon, or how to properly remove the enchantment, or even anything actually related to repairing the whatever-it-is that is causing a probably very useful empty document to not be created. (Oh, yes, CCleaner was also ran, which deleted lots o temporary files, etc.)

==

After posting this fascinating missive, I ran one of the MS Fixit programs, which did find that the Recycle Bin was corrupt and fixed it. I rebooted; sadly, I still got the pop-up error message, but yet one more test of the sleep function found the computer willing to obey its master, as first the monitor and then the computer went to sleep with a one-minute setting.

Hi,

I am using Word 2010.

I have a really long Word document with different topics.

I would like to create a Table of content at the top of that document so that I can click on that topic & it will take me directly to that topic without me trying to scroll down the whole document to find that topic. ( Just like a book in Word Format with table of content & clicking the topic to go directly to that topic without going thru the whole book page by page )

I tried to create a hyperlink for each topic but Word created the hyperlink at the same place where the topic was listed, so that doesn't help.

I also tried to copy & paste that hyperlink at the top of the document but that didn't work either.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

This will be a delivery document having 3 copies, each copy needs the same serial number.
The serial number needs to increment by +1 after each print but any information entered needs to be reset to blank.
A user form for input ?
Excel or Word (no mailmerge)
Document will reside in a shared folder on a server.
Needs to be user friendly (Idiot proof!)

Answer:Auto create a sequential serial number for a document

It is possible in Excel. I know of no way to do it in Word. The method is simple.
1. Create the template workbook with all the fields you see fit.
2. Copy the code below into the code module of the workbook

Code:
Private Sub Workbook_BeforePrint(Cancel As Boolean)
Dim cdp As DocumentProperty

On Error GoTo NoSuchProperty
Set cdp = ThisWorkbook.CustomDocumentProperties("PrintCounter")
cdp.Value = cdp.Value + 1
ActiveSheet.Range("A1") = cdp.Value
ThisWorkbook.Save
Exit Sub
NoSuchProperty:
ThisWorkbook.CustomDocumentProperties.Add Name:="PrintCounter", LinkToContent:=False, Type:=msoPropertyTypeNumber, Value:=0
Set cdp = ThisWorkbook.CustomDocumentProperties("PrintCounter")
Resume Next
End Sub

The code looks up the custom document property called "PrintCounter". If the property doesn't exist, it will be created.
Before each print attempt, the counter will be increased by one, and the workbook (with the new propery value) will be saved.
The code displays the counter in cell A1, but it can be displayed anywhere, even in header or footer, even as part of a longer string.

I just reinstalled XP Professional on a year old Acer laptop and am suddenly getting various Parser file errors as well as "failed to create empty document" errors. This occurs during just about any operation I attempt to execute on the computer, even when trying to access device manager. From what I've learned about these errors it has to do with MMC but I haven't been able to find out what to do to fix the problem. If it would be best to reinstall XP again, I don't mind but what has caused this to happen in the first place?

I'm having a couple problems that could be related.

1. On Citrix - I'm having disconnections, even though the user remain active. So it's not the "Disconnection/Hybernation" that happens when a user is inactive.

2. To investigate the disconnection, I check the Event Viewer on Win2k3, when I click on "Manage", I get the following error: Failed to create empty document.

It goes away if I reboot the server.

Server config: PIII 800MHZ, 1+gig MB Dell Poweredge

Creating a simple website for my friend in a band. He'll need to update it maybe once a week w/ dates, showtimes, etc. HOWEVER, he is not technically inclined. I want to make it so he can just type what he needs into a text document (like Word/Notepad (or the Mac equivalent)) on his laptop (a Mac), save it, and have that update his page. I'd rather not have him wade through HTML.

I'm a graphic designer and somewhat technically inclined, but woefully ignorant about this stuff. What program / format would be both good for this purpose and simple enough if I'm only looking to learn this element? Are there any free tutorials online about it? I know Flash and Actionscript, but maybe there is a better tool out there for this...

Also, I'd like for there to be a way he could update photos by himself. Maybe he could have a folder on his laptop with say 3 pictures that he names pic1, pic2, pic3, where if he saves a new photo to one of those names, the new photo fills that slot. Or some better way?

FYI: I use a PC.

My sincere thanks for any help or insight...

I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this problem after installing SP2 for XP Pro.
I have lost access to being able to load all my old wordpad documents in the new wordpad.

I get the error "Can not load Word for Windows 6.0 files".

All these files opened just fine with xp sp1 so I know it was the sp2 install.

You would think that Microsoft if anything would at least make their own documents
created with their own software usable after an upgrade.

At this point I don't know of a solution and can only hope that Bill and company will provide
a fix so I can access files that took me years to create.

So this post is twofold...

1. To let all of you know that this may happen to you as well.
2. Anyone know how to fix this problem ?

p.s. I can still use my other XP drive (to access these files) which I imaged just prior
to the sp2 install just in case something went wrong with the sp2 update.
Other than this issue the sp2 update went just fine. I haven't had any of the problems
I've been reading about on this board..
I think I'll try everything out so I'm not surprised again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been following the instructions here and here to get the old version of Wordpad working, however I have run into a problem. I downloaded the old version of Wordpad provided in the second link, since I don't have Vista, but when I try to overwrite the existing version on my computer, it won't let me give it the permission necessary to do so. It passes one permission check, but then says I need permission from "TrustedInstaller" to change it, which no amount of clicking "Try Again" will solve.

Is there something I need to be doing that I'm not? Or is there some other problem that I'm encountering? Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Problem replacing Win7 Wordpad with older Wordpad

Simple copy/paste file would not work on protected system files.

You need to take ownership of a particular file
Take Ownership Shortcut

Then, change the name of the file original file from filename.exe to filename.exe.old
and paste donor file filename.exe in the folder.

Okay I know there is a ton of things out there on the web about "Failed to create empty document". The problem is I am not finding anything out there for Windows Server 2008 and most are just small time fixes that are not working for me.

1) None of the programs I need to access MMC's with work. (AD related, Server Service related,
2) Just typing in MMC and opening a blank one yields the same problem.
3) Anyone Remote desktoped in with any account can't get to it either.

Here is the interesting part... On Vista and XP PCs I can remote connect directly to the computer management and do everything I can through the Computer Manager MMC on a remote PC. (For instance I was able to get to disk management on the server by connecting to it on a vista box and then I was able to format the newly added drive and mount it as the next drive letter.

I am not finding anything in the event logs when I try and open it to give me any errors to look up.

Answer:Wordpad: How to reinstate Windows 7 version of Wordpad?

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker - Windows 7 Forums

failing that do a system restore to a point before you made the change to wordpad,

System Restore - Windows 7 Forums

edit. if you have any third party themes then sfc can change back to default windows, so if you do then try system restore first, this wont affect any themes you have

I hear that it's possible, but I'm a complete novice at anything to do with DOS prompts or the registry.

I've attempted the instructions given outside this forum but been unable to 'take ownership' of the files in order to replace them (and I'm not even sure just replacing those Wordpad system files would be sufficient--I don't have XP or Vista components anywhere on this hard drive, so I'm not sure how that would manage to give me the whole program I want)

can anyone point me in the right direction?

Answer:replacing 7 Wordpad with ME/XP/Vista Wordpad?

Can you point me to your source (that describes how to do it), and I will have a go, and post back

Hello...

Windows XP Home
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
NIS 2007

Hello again

We recently noticed that when we paste into wordpad, the font now automatically changes to New Times Roman. Example: We are pasting from "file A" into Wordpad; file A is written in comic sans, bold, blue. When it's pasted into Wordpad, it changes to New Times Roman bold.

It wasn't like this until early March 2007.

We tried the Edit>> Paste Special>>RTF and it's the same result as above. If we choose the Unformatted Text, it pastes as font Arial.

Also, our system restore doesn't work, unless we do a restore in Safe Mode (then it works). We tried to restore the pc back to March, but that didn't fix the Wordpad issue.

Can anyone please help us to get wordpad working back the way it used to? (being able to copy/paste fonts correctly from the original source).

Thank you!

I use Wordpad a lot on a lot of machines, but I have one XP machine in which Wordpad gives me the error, Can't open Word 6.0 document (or something very close to that) with documents saved in Wordpad from other machines. This is a new Dell Dimension straight off the shelf with very few added applications.

Since then I've scratched my head, upgraded to Service Pack 2, installed Office 2000 Word and Excel, and hoped the problem would disappear. Alas.

Shouldn't WordPad for Win98 thru XP understand any WordPad saved file?

Before I start seriously fiddling with things... Is there something real obvious I'm overlooking?

I have no idea why this happened but my Word documents are not saving as .doc files instead they are saving to Wordpad.
How do I get this to stop?

Answer:Word docs saving to Wordpad; Documents opening in Wordpad instead of Word

Once the document is saved to Wordpad, right-click on it and select Open with.
If you see Word listed, select it. If not, click on Choose another app or default program. If you see Word listed, select it and check the Always use this app to open doc files check box.
If you don't see Word listed, click on the More apps list and do the needful.

I use Windows XP. I installed and ran the Avast grime fighter and then found two of my programs - one for tax preparation and one for backing up to an external hard drive - won't "open". Instead, I get the error message "failed to create empty document". I uninstalled the programs then reinstalled them, but no change - I still get the message. I saw, by googling the message, that it may have something to do with a windows registry file, but I really don't understand what that is or how to get to it or how to fix it. I contacted the Avast folks and they said they could put me in touch with their microsoft folks for $180! I am at a loss as to what I should do. Please can anyone help me figure out what to do to get these programs to run? I really need the tax program especially. Thank you.

Worpad and cetus wordpad will not paste anymore
I have to use special paste--unformatted
Reinstalled wordpad and cetus and clipboard
Also reinstalled critical files
Nothing helps
Must have deleted or corrupted some file
Help--very descriptive--would be appreciated

Answer:Wordpad / Cetus Wordpad

Unfortunately Wordpad has nothing to do with MS Office and isn't really considered a business application. It's really just a small program that comes with Windows. I'm going to move your question into the "Other software" forum where I hope it will get more attention.

I've also renamed your post to be more descriptive.

When is the last time you cleaned up your hard drive? If you want instructions, just send a blank email to [email protected] This alone can help with a lot of problems.

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

Answer:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

This is just one of those odd quirks I have run into. When I open a new document in Word, then open an older file, the new document closes and only the old one is displayed.Using Microsoft Office 2010, specifically Word.Windows 7 64-bitA bit of explanation, I often do research/writing for school or for fun. This issue has always happened, just one of those small annoyances. Here is the exact thing that is happening:1. I open a new (blank) word document, by clicking on the Word icon or by selecting "Open New Document" in the Word program.2. I open an older (saved) Word document, by clicking on the saved file, not by using the "Open" function in Word.3. The New (empty) document disappears, only the older document is open. I must now open a new empty document to write in. What I want to happen:1. Open new document2. Open old document3. Both new and old document are open (2 windows).Other notes in no particular order:- Word has always operated like this. Just wondering if there is a way to stop it.- I am not using the "Open" function in Word to open the older file, I am opening the older file by double-clicking it in the File explorer. When I use the "Open" function in Word, it does the same (basically "closing" the new file in order to open the old one). - I tried searching through Word's settings but couldn't find anything that seemed to relate to this behavior.- As per regular Word behavior, the new document is auto-na... Answer:Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)

Yes, you are right. That is normal for MS Word.Do this:Open a new document. Type something. Even a single space. Save it with a name you want. Now open an older document. Both documents can be on the screen or cascaded. If memory is not an issue, you can haven two instances of Word.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

Is there any free software out there that will allow me to scan a document and convert it into word/excel and allow editing?

Answer:Converting scanned document from image to a word/excel document

you are going to want to search for OCR programs.

Try "freeware OCR" in google or check out www.Softpedia.com

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

Answer:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.
Regards

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more
