Software to enable S.M.A.R.T on hard drive when Bios doesn't Enable it?

Question: Software to enable S.M.A.R.T on hard drive when Bios doesn't Enable it?

I was wondering if there is some free software that will enable the SMART monitoring on my hard drive. My Bios doesn't allow it to be enabled.

Preferred Solution: Software to enable S.M.A.R.T on hard drive when Bios doesn't Enable it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Software to enable S.M.A.R.T on hard drive when Bios doesn't Enable it?

SpeedFan gives some S.M.A.R.T info. This is not SpeedFan's main purpose but it does provide some hard drive info.

I've got a question here for everyone. For those of you who don't know, the S.M.A.R.T option is somthing that is enabled or disabled within the system BIOS. What it does is monitor the hard drive to see if there is any kind of problem with the hardware. I'm not sure what all goes into the monitoring, but I've seen it work before.

If there is something wrong withthe hard drive, when you boot the PC, there is a message the comes up and pauses the PC for user intereaction before it continues to boot. This is a critical point at which the operator needs to make the decison whether to boot or get help. Most of the time data can be saved or recovered if caught in time. Some people choose to ignore it and the lose all their data.

At the company at ehich I used to work, employees chose not to bother with the warning and then ***** to Info Sercives when their HD is toast. Reems to be the norm everwhere though. I actuallt encountered about 90% of our PC' not haveing this feature turned on (which I think is a mistake). My manager seems to think that is causes conflicts within the machine. We are running on a domain off of a 2003 server, and 95% PC's are XP Pro and the rest are 2000 Pro. Is there anything to my manager's concern about enableing this feature? I think it could save a lot of head aches in the future. Please let me know if there is anything to his claims of conflicts. Thanks a lot!

Hi, My Packard Bell laptop is running Windows XP. Somehow my CD/DVD drive has become disabled. The whole D drive seems to have just vanished into thin air.

I've been into regedit and removed the upper and lower filters and it still wont work.

I cant find the device in device manager. Infact the only place I have found it is in BIOS where it says its disabled.

Please can someone help me, its really starting to drive me mad lol...

Oh I also went to system restore and tried to restore the computer back three months when I know it was working but it wouldnt let me for some unknown reason. Im sure somewhere there must just be an enable/disable button but I cant find it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

System = Dell Inspiron 531

Had issue with boot drive, so replaced and re-loaded Windows Vista OS.

Decided to add original drive to grab some data; so installed the old drive in Sata Port 2. The drive did not work -- I thot is might be a bad SATA cable, so started switching things around.

Net is -- drive works fine if new boot drive is in SATA port 0; and prior hard drive is plugged in SATA port 1 (where CD had been plugged). Copied data, etc.

So -- knew I needed to ENABLE SATA Port 2 in BIOS -- but when I go there -- those items are 'Greyed out' and not selectable.

KEY QUESTION - Is there some other change that has to be made to enable SATA ports in BIOS? I went in Device Manager -- found the 'controller' entry -- but nothing seemed out of place there.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Regards, HisRocker

Answer:Adding 2nd SATA Drive -- Can't Enable in BIOS?

Under Integrated Peripherals in the BIOS are the SATA ports greyed out even if there is a device plugged into one of them? I wish your manual would show illustrations of the BIOS pages but they don't.

I am running XP Pro with SP1 installed.I have a 200GB Maxtor hard drive but my system only recognises 127GB of it. Apparently this is the limit that XP can safely 'see' on a HDD. I went to the maxtor site and downloaded their 'big drive enabler' but when I try to run the prog. it tells me that my OS is not suitable. Are there any other ways of forcing my system to recognise the full 200GB? I don't like being 73GB down!

Hi !
Maxtor 500 gig, external hdd. win xp pro

Works fine, the issue is that after I safely remove the hdd from the tray icon and I wish to re-enable the hdd , I have to physically power off and on the hdd.
Is there a way that I can re-enable the hdd without switching it off and on .

many a times it just runs when I need to access any other drive thus delaying the access time. Personally I prefer to keep the ext hdd disabled.

Just need some shorcut to detect the hdd.

any help
faiz

Answer:External Hard Drive enable / disable

I don't know of a way to detect the drive after you have gone through the safe removal process, but if what you are concerned about is repetitive on-off cycles of the drive, you could simply unplug the USB connector and reconnect it. That will do it.

I am in the middle of installing a new 120 GB Seagate ST312002 6A ATA HD. It is in the slave position but I can't get the BIOS to recognize it fully. I have managed to get the files copied from my old 20 GB Samsung HD on my 633id eMachine which runs Windows ME. When I open "My Computer" it shows Disk 2 and names the four partitions I have divided it to as D, E, F, G. When I explore Drive D it seems to have all of my files.

I had thought that I had managed to get everything done right previously and had removed the "slave" jumper and put the new Disk into it's position as the only HD in the machine which is the way I intend to run it, but when I attempted to boot it would only tell me that it couldn't find an Opr Sys.

I have gone into the PhoenixBIOS Version 1.01 setup two or three times and have unsuccessfully tried to get it to recognize the new drive; so I have reset it to the Default position.

Solution sincerely appreciated!

Today, in my Optiplex 780 Desktop with Win 7 Pro 64-bit and 8GB RAM, I cloned my hard drive from old drive to new drive.  To do that, I went into BIOS (which is the A14 version), went to Drives, enabled SATA2, and plugged the new empty hard drive into the SATA2 socket on the motherboard.  The original drive has always been in the SATA0 socket, and the CD-DVD has always been in the SATA1 socket.
The clone went well (using Macrium Reflect Free in a USB stick).  When I took out the old drive and connected the new cloned drive to the original SATA0 socket, the Optiplex gave me errors on the reboot.  It said it was missing a drive in SATA2 and did i want to Continue, go into System or run Diagnostics.  After a few reboots with that error, I went back into BIOS - Drives and disabled SATA2.  Then reboot went very well without errors, a few times.  All good.
However, those errors aren't right.  I should be able to enable SATA2 in BIOS and not get errors just because no actual drive is plugged into the SATA2 socket on the motherboard.  (That's how it works in a different Dell Optiplex 3010 I have).
So what's going on?  Why am I getting this error?
Thanks.

Hi, I'm stuck with this issue which is very important for me as I use a lot hibernation in order to continue my current work from home/office. After a system crash and some BSOD, I decided to reinstall a new copy of windows-SP3. Now, after installing power manager and all the drivers I found, the system doesn't allow me hibernation. Here are the symptoms:- At power manager, clicking on "enable hibernation" and then "apply", the tick on "enable hibernation" goes off.- At windows power management, tab "hibernation", clicking on "enable hibernation" and then "apply" or "accept" drops an error window with the text "power management directives could not reserve hibernation file" in title and in the box "file could not be found". I've been checking around and didnt got any clues...

Hi,for my Notebook itīs possible to get additional settings in the bios. But this is just possible by entering a special key combination.I did that months before, and it worked well. After entering the Bios I had to type 3 or 4 Keys together. After that, a additional menu appears and I was able to change the CPU settings and more.Sadly Iīve forgotten that combination, and I didnīt find it on the internet again. I think, that one of the Keys was the "Ins"-Button. Maybe "Shift" and "Strg" were also involved. So I hope for your expertise. Many greetings from EuropeHans Notebook: Lenovo G550Bios: Phoenix V2.51 (18CN42WW)

Hello,

Could anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages of disabling cache writing on the priming HDD? Thanks in advance

Answer:Cache Writing - Enable or not to enable?

I think the default setting is usually to enable it?

I have a dim understand of it from memory. As I recall, enabling it provides slightly faster performance but has a slight risk of data corruption in cases of a bad shutdown--like from a power outage. It can also have consequences when using RAID.

The geekiest thing to do is to enable it, but use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to eliminate the risk from power failure.

Me? I've always left it enabled and haven't knowingly suffered any negative consequences.

I've recently installed a wireless lan in my office. I have Roadrunner cable coming into their router which in turn is attached to a Linksys router. I have one desktop (Dell) running XP Pro hardwire to the router. I also have a laptop and another desktop connected via wireless. I've seen all over the place that you should not enable file sharing. So, how do you allow acces from one computer to another. I've set them all up on the same workgroup.....what am I missing? I've been able to send print from the wireless laptop to the printer attached to the wireless desktop. It's just the folders I'm having problems accessing.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:To enable or not to enable (file sharing that is)

Where exactly have "I've seen all over the place that you should not enable file sharing".

If you don't that is fine. But then you can't share files. Just a choice to make.

With a router you should be reasonably protected.

I've just built a new computer that has a 2nd hand HDD as the secondary drive. It was causing messages to appear like "Hard drive failure imminent - do you want to back up the drive". Since I was still setting up everything on the primary drive I disabled the messages by clicking "Do not show these messages again". Now I realise I should enable the message and remove the offending HDD. I'm running windows 8.1.

How do I re-enable these messages?

Any chance you unchecked this Maintenance Option in the Action Center. i can't say for sure but it might be worth checking. seems like it might be somehow tied to a periodic SMART check:

This does not seem to be correct...

From my knowledge if the CPU would support the Intel VT, then this would be enabled by default.
But your CPU Intel? Core2 Duo Processor P7450 does not support the Intel VT-x and this is mentioned on Intel page:

At boot, you need to engage the appropriate key to enter your bios menu and navigate to the area that may or may not have a setting, similar to the one in the screenshot, to enable virtualization.

... then enable Hyper-V in Windows features:

Settings on your machine will be different than mine but these are just examples.

I use Lenovo Ideapad Z470
Can you guys show me the way to enable wireless at BIOS?

Answer:How can I enable wireless at BIOS

Ngoctraiden9x, welcome to the windows 7 forum.

The bios is where the hardware is turned on/off/configured in most cases. For your computer to use the wireless, you have to have the hardware drivers installed and the software to control the wireless adapter.

Normally, when you turn your machine on the bios recognizes your hardware devices and then as your Operating system loads, it load all the drivers for your devices and at that time your wireless would become active.

Is this what you meant when you said enable wireless at bios?

Some bios screens will allow you to turn on and off devices. If this is what you mean, then by entering bios, go thru the screens and look for the wireless. Some machines have a physical wireless switch or a function key toggle.

Windows froze on the first attempt to install. After a lot of online research I found that this was a clock mismatch problem and I got it to install after downloading a fix which was supposed to be unnecessary with 98se.

I took every reference I could find to USB out of Device Manager, took the card out manually, restarted, shut down, put the card back in, started up and it installed normally.

The USB OPTi 82C861 PCI to USB Open Host Controller and

Answer:USB won't enable in Award BIOS

Normally, your USB BIOS would only be required to allow BOOTing a USB HD.

Your Belkin USB is not accessed at BOOT time, so stop fussing with BIOS.

If you have modem-->router setup, then the drivers are not required at all!

Use the Modem->Router using Ethernet cable and from the router->pcs as well.

Otherwise, modem-->pc(USB connected) requires a driver.

Does this clarify/help?

I have a lot of problems registering a right-click on the touchpad, sometimes having to click 3 or 4 times for a right-click menu to appear.I don't know if this is a hardware fault, or if there is only a small specific area where right-click is registered. Anyway, either way this is not good.Does anyone else have this issue? Ideally I would like to use two finger tap to bring up the right-click menu, but this seems to be disabled. I've tried changing some registry values to enable it but no luck. Has anyone succesfully enabled this?

Answer:Yoga 3 11 - Right-click doesn't always work / how to enable two finger tap?

Dear Jmh7

Welcome in lenovo community

Kindly be informed that there is no option to get the right click function with anyway without the right click . as for the main issue that is who hard to get the right click option from the first time, i do recommend to check the buttons at one of Lenovo authorized service center as it may be hardware issue .

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-033 running Vista Home Basic. I mostly use the laptop as a desk top replacement and, as I dislike using the touchpad, I disabled it, and instead I use an external mouse via one of the USB ports.

I am not sure whether I disabled the touchpad by pressing Fn + F9 or by some other means (if it was by some other means I have forgotten what this was). Recently I wished to re-enable the touchpad so that I could use the laptop outside the house. However, I found that pressing Fn & F9 did not re-enable the touchpad and I now can't use the touchpad at all.

If I go into mouse properties (in control panel), this tells me that my synaptics pointing device is enabled. If I go into device manager and look at "mice", I am told that my touchpad is working properly.

All this makes me suspect that the problem is not a hardware fault but that I have altered some setting, with the result that my touchpad is permanently disabled until I change the setting back to its original state.

Help!

Answer:Satellite A100-033: I disabled touchpad and now Fn+F9 doesn't enable it

Hi

One of the solution would be a system restoring? you could try to set the OS to the early time point. Maybe this would help to enable the touchpad again.

At the other hand you could try to reinstall the Touchpad drivers? firstly I would recommend removing it from the device manager and then after reboot you could try to reinstall the downloaded drivers!!!

I would appreciate some feedback from you?

Bye

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 600m notebook computer. I reinstalled windows xp home, and I downloaded a package with all the drivers for this system.

The wireless card is a Broadcom 440x 10\100 integrated controller

I am certain that is the card in the system, and the installation of the driver was successful. However, the wireless network icon in the start bar does not appear.

how to enable USB keyboard by using a software that i can download from internet free. i have used my friend's keyboard (not USB keyboard) to get into bios setup to enable usb keyboard option from peripheral but there was no option for that, so i want a software that i can install on operating system (windows xp) to enable that option or to directly enable my USB keyboard for booting, bios etc.

Answer:how to enable usb keyboard by using a software

There is no software that your can install to get your usb keyboard to work in your BIOS. You need to go into the BIOS and enable legacy USB. Depending on your computer and the age of it, you just may not be able to use a USB keyboard in low level. There are USB to PS2 converters that you will be able to use, but that's just another part to buy. Let me know how it goes.

Answer:enable l2 cache on compaq bios

The L2 cache is a part of the processor, and there is nothing to enable it. Since it is most likely the AMD K-6(2) 533Mhz, it does not have a L2 Cache like the Pentium 4 processors so to speak. AMD designs their processors differentely then Intel does.

Hi there guys - any help will be much appreciated

I had a bit of a problem with Malware which led me to reinstall windows 8. I had also at the time been trying to install Linux to dual boot beside it. However, upon reinstalling I got the annoying watermark saying "Secureboot isn't configured correctly."
Having decided I would rather remove the watermark and having gone back into the BIOS (with a reinstall) and trying to enable secure boot I get a message - "CSM is Loaded! Disable the CSM via Setup and repeat operation after Restart".
However there is, as far a I can see no option to disable the CSM in my bios - I've tried disabling anything related to Legacy and reinstalling both Ubuntu and Windows 8 as well as wiping the drive and jumping the CMOS as well as updating the BIOS.

Am very much at a loss and feel I've tried every permutation in the BIOS. Could possibly be an incompatibility with graphics card, but wouldn't know where to start on that end if it is.

Many thanks for your time!

Answer:Can't enable Secure Boot on my BIOS.

Hi folks complete novice so here go,s got a Nokia 7650 phone, been very brave and got into bios then freaked out as i did not know how to enable this infrared port, it reads as disabled os win xp pro, as it read,s in bios do,s this mean my pc is capable of infrared or should i just leave well alone and buy a bluetooth usb device, help much needed Mammak

Answer:how to enable "onboard ir port in bios"

I doubt very much that the case has an Ir transceiver, think thats the right word, built into it. Loads of motherboards have these Ir connectors on the motherboard, but I have never come across a motherboard that ships with the receiver \ sender. This would be plugged into the M\B and then fitted to the front of the case. As Ir has to physically see each other. The best way to communicate with a 7650 is to get a usb bluetooth dongle, about Ģ20 with the software. You will also have to go to the Nokia website and download N7650_PCSuite_en. This is the Nokia software that will talk to the phone. It is 26.6meg.You could alternatively buy a USB-Ir adaptor for about the same, but as I have mentioned above the phone would have to actually see the Ir device.

Is there a command to edit the BIOS in DOS? My problem is we have several remote computers that need to have the WOL enabled in the BIOS, and I wanted to know if there is a script I could create to enable the WOL in the BIOS and push it remotely. Answer:Enable WOL on the BIOS via Command Line

None that I'm aware of. Although there are DOS programs to tinker with the BIOS CMOS memory parameters, you'd have to know a lot about the exact BIOS parameter layout to even attempt such a thing. I think a personal visit is in order.

enable this setting so that I get full protection from Kaspersky.

I am grateful for any help you could offer me. I have a 64 bit laptop in Win 10.

Thanks

Answer:I need to enable VIRTUALIZATION setting in my bios please

First thing I would do is uninstall Kaspersky. But...if you really want to keep it, there are a few ways to get into your bios.

Try this first, easiest way:
UEFI Firmware Settings - Boot to from inside Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

If that doesn't work, then shutdown your computer by going to the power icon, and hold down shift key when you click shutdown. That will override Windows 10 Fast Startup. Once the computer shuts down all way, press the power key to turn it back on. Immediately start tapping the key to enter bios setup - which is probably F2 for your Acer 7741. It might also be ESC, DEL, or another F-Key, but a quick Google search said F2 was it.

Or you can click on Restart from the power icon without holding down the shift key. When the computer goes blank, like it is ready to power off and just starts to reboot, start pressing the key to enter bios setup.

I have obtained a few old panasonic cf-27 toughbooks. None of them included the hard drive caddy with the proprietary ide connector needed to install a hard drive. Instead of buying the caddies, I thought I would try to boot into a linux distro from a USB flash drive. I had to use a special grub floppy because there is no cd drive, only a floppy. After all that, I discovered that the USB host controller is not turned on when it first boots up. I tried to find BIOS updates that would activate usb booting, but no luck. I thought I would ask if anyone has any ideas as to how I can get these laptops to boot from a flash drive. I figured if I could get the base address for the usb controller, I could edit the BIOS binary file that I have now to see if I could enable it, but I don't know how to get the base address. I would like to enable my Acer Aspire laptop for Virtualization Technology (i.e. VT).  As I have learned through searching the internet and on this community discussion board, many (perhaps all) of the Acer models have a crippled BIOS setup that does not allow for enabling VT technology.  This is despite the fact that many of the models' chips and CPU will support it.  Although this question has been asked several time on this discussion board, I do not see that either Acer or anyone in the community has answered this question satisfactorily.   How do I enable VT on my Acer Aspire Bios? This appears to be such a common problem that there should either be 1. a method to enable VT on the BIOS or 2. an acknowledgement that Acer Bios is crippled for some strange reason and cannot be altered beyond the simplified setup screen that is provided.    Can VT be enabled on Acer Notebooks or not?  If so, how do I do it? This appears to be such a  common question, ACER should answer this without requiring payment.   I am really annoyed.

Answer:Acer Aspire Bios VT enable

Answer:how do I enable Bios Virtualization on an HP Probook 450 G1 ...

Please restart the Notebook and keep tapping F10 key during the startup to access the BIOS. Once you get to the BIOS please select System Configuration and then go to Device Configuration. Now here you need to look for either BIOS Virtualisation or VT-X and enable the same.Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again**Click the KUDOS star on left to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem.Thank You,K N R KI work on behalf of HP

Hey All,

I'm purchasing a new SSD next week. I've been reading up on it and it looks like I need to enable AHCI in my BIOS. I can't find any option for AHCI though.

I currently have my System setup as RAID0. This was how it was set up in the factory and I haven't changed it.

The only option I have is under SATA operation and I can either set it to "RAID Autodetect/ATA" or "RAID ON".

Is there anyway I can check to see whether AHCI is already enabled? If not will one of the above options enable it?

Answer:How to Enable AHCI - No option in BIOS.

Some motherboards incorporate AHCI SATA automatically. In the early days of SATA there was a lot of confusion in terminology. "RAID" - "AHCI" - all the same thing.

For your motherboard it looks like you want to choose "RAID Autodetect/ATA" to use a non-RAID setup with AHCI.
