Question: How to change the order in which folders appear?

Is there a way I can do this? I want certain accounts to appear at the top of the list. I do not use the Local Folders - so I want that to move to the bottom.TIA.

I have Windows 8. I have a folder which contains all my various sub-folders...it's a "My Documents" basically.....but the individual files come up first top to bottom, and the folders are in reverse alphabetical order......how do I get the folders first, and in A-Z order?

Hello,

Often times when I want to rename a file, I hit "delete" by mistake. I was wondering if there is a way to move the delete option up, so that it is not next to rename? I have tried a few context menu editors, but they do not seem to have rename or delete as options to play around with. Please see attached.

Sorry, I can only suggest a workaround. Instead of Rename, I always select the last item in the list, Properties. I use this to rename.

I dont if can but like my pictures folder I want to put pictures in a certain order but I dont think W7 lets you do that does it?

For files, you can right click and "sort by" name - ascending or descending.
For folders, you can click on the "name" tab to get ascending or descending sub folders

Hi,

Somehow my sort order has been changed somehow. On another post I see that it goes to the view tab to change the order, however the view tab is not shown when I open a folder. What I see is "organize, share with, Burn, and new folder.

I would like to change back to normal aphabetical order. How do I do this?

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable - This Tutorial disables Auto Arrange in all folders except Libraries, to allow free sorting.

When you disable Auto Arrange and either move or rename a folder, it will refresh Auto Arrange in that specific moved or renamed folder ONLY, after each time you move or rename it. Auto Arrange is still disabled for that moved or renamed folder, but you will have to arrange the files back to whatever non-auto arranged order you like after moving or renaming the folder.

How do I save FOLDERS so that they'll be in the order in which I put them on the CD/RW?
I want to save the original file Folder (they're all Word 2000 .doc, or .txt files) then every two weeks or so save a new folder with the revised/updated info, {i}yet keep the preceding ones from being written over.[/i} For example, would something like this be feasible?

and so forth..... I was thinking of putting a Read_Me file on the CD, but presume it'd be stored as last file on the CD after the Folders. Could I put a Read_me file in a folder named, say, Folder_Read_Me? Would it be listed before Folder_00?

A problem would be saving a month with a 1 in it (October, Nov., or December), OR a date with only a single digit.
OR would they be sorted/saved to the CD by the Folder 00 ... 01 ... 02 listing?

I use dates in reverse format at the start of folders or files when I want to do something like you're describing. A new folder or file made yesterday would be:

20030420 Folder Name

while today's would be:

20030421 Folder Name

The folder/file names can be anything I need and they will always be sorted in the folder in the order I first created them. This applies also wehn backed up to a CD.

I use this approach because it often takes me several weeks to get some document completed and I will often remember the rough date when a file was topical, but it would be out of sync after multiple edits, saves, etc.

It also helps in keeping all files of different types related to the same project/topic in a useful order. I know there are many different ways of using the filter options in Windows, but this simple naming approach seems to work fairly well for me.

Hi,

I've had this problem for a while - it's nagging and slows me down, but it's not deadly.

When I display a folder's contents in Windows Explorer or even in the file open dialog of a program like Photoshop, the files are not in any specific order, and certainly not in the expected default order, which is "by name".

I've already specified View>Details in the View options of the Explorer window, and applied it to all folders using Tools>Folder Options>View>Apply to all folders.

Problem is, while the details view always shows up, the files seem to be in random order. I always have to click on a column heading to get them in any order at all. (In Photoshop's Open File dialog, I have to right click the window and specify "Arrange Icons by Name". The next time I open that same directory/folder, the files will be in random order again).

They used to show up in name order all the time. A few months ago that stopped happening.

One thing I have noticed is that in a given folder, the last subfolder that I accessed will be at the top of the name listing and maybe a few more recently accessed folders will follow it. But after that, the order seems random again.

I am truly puzzled. I suspect a registry entry is the problem, but I don't know which one.

I've seen this a couple of times, but...I have no explanation for it.

What I ususually do is run chkdsk /r and defrag the partition, which seems to work.

I like my folders and files arranged in alphabetical order except I do not like the fact that when I copy new files into a folder, they go immediately into alphabetical order. I prefer they go in at the end of the list and stay that way until I click View> Refresh or when I exit and re-enter the folder.

In other words, I want it to work like it did in Windows XP.

Is there a way to fix this?

I doubt if there is any way to rectify this as Windows 7 by default will do exactly as you have found. All I can suggest is that you create a new folder in the list just for new entries.

Other suggestions may follow.

Hi. I'm new to this forum...I have a strange issue here that I can't figure out and can't seem to find anything on google. I have a Win7 PC that always displays folders in descending order. I can't get it to stay in ascending order. I've tried the following, but everytime I reopen explorer it still goes back to descending order.
- I've right clicked in explorer and selected sort by 'ascending' order. Closed explorer, re-opened it and goes back to descending order.
- I've also tried 'Restore defaults' in the view tab of folder options, but still sorts by descending order
Any ideas how to get this to stay on ascending order?

I have W7 Professional. All programs live on C, which is SSD, and all my data on C drive. I have a big folder (name FTF) in My Documents, and it is driving me nuts. It contains a lot of sub-folders, and also a lot of files of various types. I would love them to appear in alphabetical order as standard, but don't seem to be able to achieve that. If I sort by name... then Windows digs inside all the subfolders and lists all the individual files so that the list becomes unmanageably large, and I cannot see the subfolders themselves.

If I access from libraries, it sorts in "last accessed" or "last modified" order, which isnt bad.... top right says "Arrange by Folder"...

But how on earth can I get it sorted alphabetically, with the subfolders also in alpha order at the top?

Not sure what happened, but I just noticed when I add a new folder within a larger folder the new folder won't automatically line up in alphabetical order.

This only happens in 1 folder where I have 1300+ folders set up for my business.

I'm not sure if I disabled something but it's a pain trying to put folders in order by hand.

Any thoughts?

HiCan any body tell me how to organize my folders in order of size? When I open my disc drive I can see all my folders, but I cannot organize them in order of size. When I right click, I get 4 options: name, size, type, and modified. But when I click on size, nothing happens. A similar thing happens  when I look at my disc through Total Commander. Individual archives are sorted by size, but the folders, which contain lots of archives and are all different sizes, are only sorted by name. This is extra annoying because I may want to find the last folder of archives that I downloaded, and I cant just click sort by date, because they are only sorted by name. Or even more annoying when I want to back up my disc, but don't want to back up video folders, which are really big. Therefore it would be great if I could just click sort by size and easily see where they are and remove them. Can any one advise me on how to sort this out? With the help of someone on this forum, I finally got all my folders in alphabetical order, now for the files. I know that you can click on "sort by name" and the files will be in alphabetical order, but is there a way to keep them in order? It seems to me that on my desktop running Windows Vista, that I was able somehow to keep my files in ABC order. Is this possible?

Until about 6 weeks back all folders and file names appeared in alphabetical order when I opened a program or looked in My Documents.  Now they are never in alphabetical order.  Sometimes the last one used is at the bottom and each one opened after that will go to the bottom.  I can go to View, click Icons, then go back to Lists and they will be in alphabetical order until I close the program and go back to it again, then they are out of order again.  The same will happen if I have them in order under List-Icons.  This happens in QuickBooks, My Documents, Word, Excel and all other programs.  It is very time consuming to find the correct folder or file when I never know where it might appear.

How does one set the tracks ripped from an audio CD in track number order rather than in alphabetical order in a windows folder.I have used the 'sort by track number #' function but when reopening the folder it goes back to the alphabetical order !Thanks

The 5 Folders(those below in .jpg file) open in this order, always get re-arranged.
They will get re-arranged after a few days.
Can we "lock" the order to what we want and not get auto re-arranged

I use two computers, one running W2K Pro and one running XP. In one folder, I have files numbered as follows:
01, 02, 025, 03, 04.

In W2K the files display in that order. But in XP they display in the following order:
01, 02, 03, 04, 025.

In both system, view is set to arrange files according to filename. Why do they display in different orders, and how can I get them to display the same?

Hi, It is a simple but irritating problem I have noticed that just seemed to happen one day for some reason.Now all my folders are listed in alphabetical order as I set them normally and that is fine, However when I want to say download a file and I choose which folder to put that file in everything is in reverse order?!! I have tried changing this manually each time and tried something else but every single time that happens everything again shows in reverse order (Z-A not A-Z)As I say it's very irritating and I'm sure it must be something very simple! Hello,
I have one question. Is it possible to save the order of my music folders (and files!) in My Music folder. What I mean is that I'm going to transfer all of my music (55 GB) on external HDD and then back to freshly installed Windows 7. And what I would like is that my order of folder is sorted as I did it in Win XP, and NOT by alphabetical order or something else. I have really huge collection and organizing it like it is now would be a nightmare. I do not want music to be sorted like: ATB, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Trance; but in my order (like Coldplay, Linkin Park, ATB, Trance). I wonder if thumbs.db hidden file has to do something with order of the icons (I guess not ) So is it possible or not? Thanks for advices, cheers!

Explorer can display the files in different orders - alphabetical, file type, date modified and you can vary that by clicking on the column heading. Is that what you've done and become accustomed to seeing? If it is, you're in luck because W7 can do the same.

Hello community!

All of my photos are on my Skydrive, and my folders are named by year

On my Windows Phone, and in the Skydrive app, the folders appear in numerical order.

BUT!
In the Pictures app, the folders are all mixed up! (2009, then 2012, then 2005 etc...)
I'm set for "view by folders"

any idea what may be causing that?

When I go into Explorer to look at or open a Document Folder, my folders appear in reverse alpha order (Z-A). Is there a way to change this so that my folders appear in alpha order (A-Z). This is extremely annoying and I really would appreciate help with this.

My image files in folders have started appearing in descening order (numerically) instead of ascending order. e.g. a folder of images will appear TIFF_20 > TIFF_01, top to bottom, instead of the other way round.

Any idea what I might have done to make this happen?

A user has created lots of personal folders. Some of these folders when selected are showing as 'There are no items to show in this view' even though at the bottom left of the screen it says that it contains eg. 30 items.

These folders are sorting by default to 'by flag' even though the user does not use flags. If he chooses to change the sort manually to 'by From date' or any other field, the messages then show as normal.

The user would like to set a default sort order for all existing and any newly created folders. Is this possible?

I have a different sort of problem with grouping.

See, I'm a game modder, and this requires me to have many folders open at once. The problem is, when my computer goes to sleep and then wakes up, the order of my folders on the taskbar is changed. This bugs me to no end, and I'm wondering how I can stop this reordering from happening. Thanks!

I have a sager laptop that I bought and can't change the boot order. I get into the bios and windows boot manager is option 1 but when I click on it I seem to only get an option to disable or change order with UEFI IP4 or 6 which are options 2 and 3. I'm trying to boot from an extenal dvd drive. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

Are you trying to do a one time change-meaning you do not want to permanently change the boot order, just for that one action(like booting to install an OS or use a live disk)? most PCs et you do it when you press the power button start spamming(repeatedly pressing) the Escape key, then the boot order menu will pop up, then choose the disk you want.

I need to change the boot order so that the BIOS polls the CD/DVD drive for a bootable disk and starting from there.So the boot drive order should be:CD/DVDHDD I've gone into BIOS and found the Boot Drive Order section. The first item listed there is Windows Boot Manager with choices for USB drive, network, and uefi drives listed after. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone hopefully someone can help me out with my issue .

I was having issues with my laptop and somehow ended up setting my boot device to the CD drive in BIOS . Now my computer will only boot to what is on the CD which is the program windows boot genius . if i don't have the CD in it'll repeatedly turn on and shut down unless i put the CD back in . I know i have to get back to the BIOS to change my boot device back to my HD ? but im unable to do so . F2 is my bios key but that takes me to windows boot manager where i can only select windows and it loads up to the program all over again .
I can access task manager etc and the run window and see my files are still there though . I did a boot file test through the program and none of the files are missing and it recognizes that my PC was on windows 8.1 .

You mean changed the boot order of your Physical Drives? If so, you want to hit F2 or F8, sometimes DEL (depending which type of machine you have) and you should enter BIOS when youre computer is booting. Let me know if that helps.

When I rebuilt my dead Compaq PC, I must've hooked the IDE cables to the two CD drives backwards, because the one on top (usually the first letter, like D: ) is E:, and the bottom is D:. Can you reverse the letters of the drives without rewiring them?

Answer:Change drive order in XP...is it possible?

Right Click on my Computer>Manage>Disk Management.

Right click on teh drive change it to a letter further down then right click on the drive that you want to have that letter. Then go back to the original drive and give it the 2nd drives letter.

Or give them any letter you want. The only one you cant change this way is the drive with the Windows isntall on it.

im using windows 2000 pro on a dell latitude cp laptop i think i tried everything when i restart it and hit f1 or f2 it just starts loading window it just bypasses by everyuthing and starts windows any help is appreciated

So i took a peak in my bios screen today and i see the dvd drive is listed as the first boot option. I wanted to change it to the hdd, but it wont let me. This is the first time i have encountered this. I can select the menu, and i can move the arrow up and down to select the "new" first boot, but when i hit enter and i am returned to the main screen the order still says dvd drive.?...what gives, any ideas?

I'm running two DVD drives and three harddrives.
All the drives are SATA and I'm not using RAID.
I set the "CDROM" as third boot device in "Boot Device Priority" and disable the 4th.
Set which HD to boot off in "Hard Disk Drives".

Not sure why yours won't save HD as first boot device.

Using my OEM cd for xp home, I cannot boot up with the cd.

I have gone into boot up list, h/lited cd rom (which is 3rd in my case) c/o enter, pressed f8 to save but it boots up as normal desktop on restart.

Any advice please

I accidentally deleted some partitions in my U410 and now I need to completely reinstall the windows. However every time that I change the boot order at the BIOS, (putting USB as first and the 'windows boot manager' as last') and click on 'Exit Saving Changes' it simply do not save my changes! If I go again to the bios the windows boot manager goes back to the top and I can't boot from the USB. Is there a simple solution for this?

Can you try switching the BIOS to these options,
 
1. Boot into the BIOS and set the following settings:
 
Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Win7 OS or other OS
 
When finished, hit Load default settings (just right above it) then set these additional settings:
 
Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Boot Mode = Legacy
Boot Priority = Legacy First
 
2. When finished, hit Fn+F10 to save and exit.
3. Restart the computer and start tapping F12 to pull up the boot menu, There you can select the USB.
 
This should let you select Legacy Devices such as USB,

Hi  Is there a way to change the order in which services or other things start when the laptop is initially switched on? While I'm waiting for the laptop to finish booting up it seems the last thing to work is the trackpad, which is really frustrating.  I have to wait for it to settle down before I can use the trackpad properly. I've looked under 'startup' and there's nothing there that I don't need, I only have the items I want ticked.  An example would be perhaps to make the touchpad service start before bluetooth/apple services/print spooler/etc. which I don't need straight away. I have a G580 2689 running windows 8. Thanks.

I want to change the boot order so that if I have  USB plugged in it will boot off that. I can get it to boot off the USB by interupting the boot and selecting the USB, but I want it to do that automatically. I can get in to the BIOS setup and find the Boot section but it only seems to give me options of UEFI or Legacy, no option for USB. I'm used to computers that have sensible options of Hard Drive, Optical Drive, Floppy Drive and USB.

Depending on the model and the BIOS version, newer Lenovo systems are preloaded with the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) and has a feature called Secure Boot (which is enabled by default) to protect the OS from loading any third party boot loaders / drivers (or even viruses) from loading during the boot process (this includes booting from the USB).
 
To automatically boot from a bootable UEFI USB flashdrive, the BIOS must have the following settings set:
Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled
 
Boot Tab:
Boot Mode = UEFI
USB Boot = Enabled
Boot Sequence = USB Key
 
Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS
 
If the USB Boot / Boot Sequence is missing in the BIOS, you will not be able to automatically boot from a bootable USB flashdrive. Instead, you will need to press F12 during boot-up and choose the USB key or follow this guide to boot from the device within Windows.

Hello all i really need some help

I was having issues with my laptop and somehow ended up changing my boot device to the CD drive in BIOS . Now my computer will only boot to what is on the CD which is the program windows boot genius . if i don't have the CD in it'll repeatedly turn on and shut down unless i put the CD back in . I know i have to get back to the BIOS to change my boot device back to my HD ? but im unable to do so . F2 is my bios key but that takes me to windows boot manager where i can only select windows and it loads up to the program all over again .
I can access task manager etc and the run window and see my files are still there though . I did a boot file test and none of the files are missing and it recognizes that my PC was on windows 8.1 , im really stuck though .

Question: Change Boot Order

Just added a new Samsung M.2 SSD that the OS sees in the device manager. I've got a copy of the recovery image made and saved on a USB 3.0 drive.If I boot from the USB drive and run the recovery, how do I get make it so the SSD is the default boot device. When it goes into the recovery options from the USB flash drive, it doesn't specify which drive to use.  The BIOS/ UEFI  options aren't much help either. I'm just finding the HDD just way too slow.Thanks,Sheila

Answer:Change Boot Order

I found the solution!  Go to the BIOS and under the System Configuration menu, I had to enable "Legacy" boot. When I restarted the laptop, it booted to the new Samsung  M.2 SSD by default as I'd used the Samsung migration tool to clone the main hard drive onto the SSD already. Now boots lightning fast!

How to change the boot order of OS's?

My boot order shows win2k on the top position but would like my winxp to be the top position so that way it will automatically boot into XP after the time runs out. Any idea how to change the boot order?

Under "Startup and Recovery", click "Settings"

hi !, i am running a system with intel core 2 duo processor and gigabyte motherboard. In my BIOS the first boot device is HDD, now i want to change that to CD/DVD, but i cant change them...

after entering Advanced BIOS settings -> Hard disk boot Priority [Press Enter]

but when i press enter it is showing the order, but those are disabled, i tried +, -, pu, pd but they didn't work. Does any one know the solution...?

You're looking at the wrong item. Go down one line until you see "First Boot Device." Change that to the appropriate CDROM device. You can also set the second and third boot device if you wish. What you are doing now is choosing which hard drive (and hard drives only) will boot ahead of the other hard drives. So if your hard drive is selected as the second boot device, this will tell the system which hard drive to look at first. That is, if you had more than one. If you only have one hard drive, that would be unnecessary.

You may also press F12 to temporarily change the boot order for that one time only without entering the BIOS.

Disconnect from Internet before trying:

Uninstall both AV and printer.
Install printer.
Install AV.

If that does not work, there is a way to detect load order with a utiliity by that name from http://www.sysinternals.com. You can see the actual load order only with that kind of utility. Installing the anti-keylogger software SnoopFree indicates that its service is the first item to load before any other system service. So, there is a way to have it your way that the author of Snoopfree knows about - but, I have since forgotten, but that's the best example of the situation you want that I know of.

A bit of research should uncover the technique used.

So I'm having a dual boot system (Windows and Ubuntu) and since I disassembled my laptop some hours ago the laptop boots directly into Windows (ignoring the GRUB OS selection screen).

I'm having a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 10 (Insider Preview) and a Samsung EVO 840 SSD on which my both OSs are installed.

When booting into BIOS I can't change the order of booting (Windows is stuck at the 1st position).

Any idea on how to solve this?

You need to update the boot file location.

I use rEFInd not grub so (from Windows Administrator command prompt) I run this whenever Windows resets it which it does on occasion.

You probably want to do something like this (again from windows command prompt).

If you can't remember or don't know where you installed grub (or what the name is) then mount the ESP and have a look - your loader will be in the EFI directory somewhere.

I am sure I am going to get a few "why don't you use the Search" or "try Google" suggestions, but the problem is I am not 100% sure on what to Google for this.


I have a Server 2008 R2 Box doing my DNS, and DCHP duties among a few other things. Before I started using the DHCP on the windows box, i was using PFSense for DHCP and only DHCP at the end of its life (kind of overkill for DHCP).

So my question is, can i change the order that my Windows DHCP server hands out IP address?

For example, right now it hands out lower numbers first like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 but i would rather it went 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 as my old PFSense box use to do.

EUFI bios, PC always boots into W7 when I want W10 unless I go into bios and click the drive with W10 on it, then it works. I have tried changing it but when I try to change it in advanced it says not supported but it must be as if I click it then W10 boots up.

Hi, folks! I'm pretty familiar with MSCONFIG, but it doesn't indicate what ORDER the services/applets load in the background during startup.
I would like to consider changing the order. Such as loading my firewall and anti-virus before anything else.

Is there a safe applet or program out there which will enable me to edit the startup order?

I don't think you can change the start up. If Windows was more like Unix/Linux then yes you could via /etc/rc.d, but Windows doesn't have that capability.

At my job I have tons of folders and I need them to be in order by date. Whenever I browse the folder normally it shows up in order by date, like I want it to. But when I load or save a file it is _always_ in alphabetical order - which is the biggest pain in the butt because then I either have to find whatever folder I am looking for or change it back to details then to ordered by date. I have tried to reset all folders, I have tried to apply all subfolders to these settings, and whatever else I could find. So obnoxious! I even went to the Windows Annoyances book by O'Riley and tried everything I could in there - no luck! Help please!! I save and load a file at least every 5-10 minutes and it is driving me crazy.

I tried sort by date, I tried apply first and then ok - When I am saving & loading I can change it to sorted by date, but it always reverts after I leave the folder and come back or save or load and come back. I tried to go a folder up and put apply these settings to all subfolders and mess around with that folders options. I can not name the folders by date (it would have to be by time) because the folders need to be named the actual name of the merchant.

My folder settings stay just how I set them whenever I am browsing the folder with Windows Explorer (organized by date). Try this. In an Open or Save dialog box, sort by date. Now, hold down the Control key and click the X in the upper right. (close the box).
Next time you open the dialog box, it should be sorted by date.

Hi there

Is there any way to customize (or use an alternative to) File explorer.

Here's an example from DOLPHIN (a Linux type of File explorer) - breaks the folders down into decent alphabetical order and the files within them etc - makes navigation very easy indeed.

File explorer is a DOG compared to this - especially when you have large folders with loads of files in them -- the serach is better too !!!!.

Hello. In W7, to change boot order, I went into the BIOS/Boot/ then moved the devices up or down to change the boot order and exited with saving. Under W10 however, I do not see the same options and am confused as to how to accomplish this. I have a Lenovo Y700 15isk which has a 1 TB HDD and a slot for an m.2 drive. I want to clone an m.2 from the HDD and and use that as my boot device, but don't know how to accomplish that in W10. Any step by step guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regardless of whether you have Windows 7 or Windows 10 installed in your computer, the BIOS settings screen remains the same.

Hi guys,

I'm just setting up the mail app and I can't seem to change the order of email accounts on the left hand side. I looked up other possible solutions and it appears the "right click > move up/down" option is no longer available. Anyone else experience this?

Edit: I've also tried changing the names and the alphabetical order doesn't seem to matter.

Fixing a Dell Latitude CPi for a colleague. Problem is the system freezes during the XP splashscreen. I went to change the boot order to CD so I could repair the install, but the BIOS isn't letting me change the setting. PII-233 CPU. 64MB sys mem, 2MB vid mem, 512 KB L2 Cache, 3253 MB HDD.

Can anyone tell me an easy way to change the order of the programs at startup. Currently the first program that loads is my Pop Up Blocker. I'd like to move it further down or even to the end of the startup order.

Is their a program that would allow me to change the order?

One other minor thing I would like to change is when I go to the Internet Explorer, it opens in a small window. I would like to have it open maximized as a default. I can't find any where to make that happen. Any Suggestions?

There are 2 ways to review startup info.

1)MSConfig allows you to enable/disable programs, but doesn't allow you to set the order of the load!

2) using regedit.... the info is in two places as there are programs that start for the machine as a whole and programs that start for each individual user. The paths to this information are..

...Software
......Microsoft
.........Windows
............CurrentVersion
...............Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
...( same as above )

I've never tried it, but it would make sense that if you changed the order of the registry entries that you change the order of the load!

Why can't I change my UEFI boot order? I want to boot first from CD/DVD, then USB stick, then HDD if neither is loaded. When I go into the BIOS setup, it is simple to change the boot order. However, my system always uses the UEFI boot order, which I have been unable to change. I think that I should enable legacy boot, but when I choose that, I get a warning message. Would I render my laptop unbootable if I did enable legacy boot? My system is working, and I don't want to crash it, just change the boot order.

In other verisons of windows the tiles on the taskbar would be in order from time. If i opened Google Chrome, and then Adobe, and then another Google Chrome instance it would look that way. Now however it "groups" the two Google Chrome ones near other, and the Adobe one on the left. Anyway to change that?

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8200 with Windows XP Home and last week I installed a plug and play bootable Sony DVD CD-RW drive.

Since that time it won’t boot the way it used to.

Here is the situation report.

I turn it on.

I get a “Press [F2] for the boot device selection menu.”

I press F2 and 90 seconds or more later the selection menu appears.

I select “Boot from internal HD” and the systems boots up.

If possible I want my computer to boot automatically to the built in hard drive. I like the option of booting to the other devices. I would like to keep the option open to press F2 at start up. However if I don’t press F2 I would like it to boot to the hard drive without my intervention in a short amount of time.

I know there must be a simple way to do this but I don’t know how to do this. Someone please help, I can’t afford to pay someone $ 50.00 to do this for me right now.

I have read many of the posts here on this subject. I have Googled and read many inputs on how to solve this problem. None of these have worked for me.

How to change context menu order - Help!
I was hoping to find a way to change the order of the items in the context menu under windows xp sp2.

As an example, when i right click on MY COMPUTER, the order of the items should be:

I have searched thru the registry to find the entries, but when I get there I can't find any way to change the order of the menu. I have followed the path:

but once there, I have no options to change.

Am i even close? Is there another registry key I am missing? Any ideas would be helpful!

Go to Folder Options => File Types
Scroll down to 'Folder' and click the Advanced button
You will see 2 operations listed. The one in bold is the default.
Click 'open' and click the 'Set Default' button. Be aware that this will change the default action for all folders. But I suppose you can change it back if you want.

is there a way to set the default sorting in Now Playing in WMP11 to sort by filename? when i select multiple files and add to now playing list they seem to show up in a random order. I want them to show up by file name order WITHOUT having to change the sort option every single time.

I think you would have to create your own playlist if you want the songs in a specific order.

Sorting the songs is done randomly, I dont think there is a way to change this other than making your own.

New XPS 13 in front of me. I want to clean install the OS on this machine. In my XPS 15, (L502X), the BIOS was laid out so that even I was able to figure things out, such as changing the boot order so I could boot off a thumb drive. But in the 13 I'm not finding it to be so intuitive. I'm sure it's me, but I'd rather not fuss around and screw things up, so I figured I'd come here to ask: what are the steps for changing the boot order on this machine? Thank you.

Settings, Update, Recovery. Or keep tapping F12 to access boot menu as soon as you reboot. Changes to the bios not necessary to boot to media. Not a good idea to clean install windows on a new computer. That procedure is old tech and not needed on new uefi models and can cause irreparable damage. Windows and everything else is a single image file not installed piecemeal like years ago. You will screw things up if you apply old procedures to a brand new OS.

Hello:On my Yoga 2 Pro, I have already used the Novo One Key recovery system to create a full image backup of my C: Drive, which was copied to a portable 500GB USB based disk drive  As long as the computer can do a cold boot using the one key Novo button, all is well and I can restore my system. I did read that in some cases, the one key recovery might fail if the hard drive is damaged and is replaced by a blank hard drive. So I created a Windows 8.1 bootable repair thumb drive (USB) which would allow a restore from an image backup.  To use this repair drive requires that the system will boot from the USB thumb drive. The default boot order places the USB drive down the list.  Does anyone know of any issues if I change the USB drive to be the first in line for a boot? Regards,Rich Locus

hello, how to create a full image backup of my C: Drive? did you mean that you use the Novo to make a copy of all your C dirve files to external disk, and then use the Novo to recover the whole system? In this case, you key files are backed up in extrnal disk, and the recovery operation erase all your data in C drive and put it back to factory mode, right?

No recent changes that I'm aware of No new hardware I don't turn my computer off very often but the last 4 times I've done so upon restart the boot order has changed from hard drive to CD Rom so it won't boot of course. I restart it, pressing escape to go to boot menu and change the order to hard drive and save the changes and boot right up. But it reverts to cd rom on next start

I have searched thru the registry to find the entries, but when I get there I can't find any way to change the order of the menu. I have followed the path:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

but once there, I have no options to change.

Am i even close? Is there another registry key I am missing? Any ideas would be helpful!

Recently, my BIOS has started to display ' view only item '; this means I can't change my boot order and few other things as well. Has any one seen this problem before ? I would appreciate some help.Many thanks, Colin

Answer:BIOS - can't change boot order.

Seen it for audio and graphics cards usual trick is to disable in device manager first before trying to change in BIOS.Never seen it for boot order though.

I remember this from the past but I don't remember how to fix it. I did some searching online but I don't know what this is called. I found one reg fix but it didn't work. Anybody have the correct registry fix for this?

My files are sorting as so;
1,
11,
12,
13--->19,
2,
20,
21--->29,
3,
30,
etc

I want regular ascending.
 

Answer:Change Windows 7 Sort Order from 1,10,11 to 1,2,3

Sort by name should sort 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ..., 11, 12, ...

If it doesn't, then there's something else wrong.

Whenever my computer comes back from standby mode, it seems the last process to revive is my wireless mouse/keyboard. Is there a way to have these revive first or are they just, by nature, slow to activate?

When I boot up (XP Home Edition, SP2), the icons in my quick-launch toolbar appear in the following order: Broadband internet connection (2 vertical green arrows), other plug-in connection (1 horizontal green arrow, presumably because I've got a USB hub), speaker volume, AVG, then Kerio firewall.Since I've installed SP2 I've occasionally had a message, prior to the AVG and Kerio icons coming up, saying that my computer may be at risk because I've no firewall.This made me think, is there any way I can instruct Kerio and AVG to load before my broadband connection does?

I have set up calendars in excel. I would like to tab through one month then to the next but because the months are side by side the tabs run straight across the page. Tab order could correct this so that I could complete one month then mopve to the next.

in graphic programs, explorer, etc when I right click I get a drop down box showing

"rename"

well right above that is "delete" and I'm frequently getting the two mixed when clicking, tho I don't usually actually delete cause I catch that first.

Is there a way to seperate those and reorder the drop down list so they are farther apart. It gets to be a nuisance sometimes when I am rename picture files.

Press F2 to bring up the rename dialog. No confusion that way

HiI can change the boot order of hdd, CD, usb etc but I currently have two hdd's fitted, both with Win 10 installed.How do I set one as the default?Normally laptops defualt to the one fitted to the original hdd sata port and not the one fitted to the optical drive sata port, but not this machine! Thanks.

How to change context menu order - Help!
I was hoping to find a way to change the order of the items in the context menu under windows xp sp2.
As an example, when i right click on MY COMPUTER, the order of the items I would like is :
1. Open
2. Explore
3. Search
4. manage
However Explore is at the top, followed by open, search, and manage.

If you read my previous Post, My Computer Popped ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/104716/my-computer-popped-and-now-wont-power-on/ ), you'll know my initial problem.I've managed to salvage the Hard Drive (Salvaged Hard Drive), and connect it into my old computer (Original Hard Drive) It's still working fine. Disk Manager reads it as Healthy. My problem is, If I connect it internally through the cable as Hard Drive 1, the computer doesn't want to access it. It gets stuck on Initializing Boot Screen (when you first start it up, even before Windows XP logo appears). I can connect it as Hard Drive 2/Zip, replacing my internal 250Zip Drive as the second component (previously it was Original Hard Drive as 1, Zip Drive as Hard Drive 2/Zip, now Original Hard Drive as Hard Drive 1, Salvaged Hard Drive as Hard Drive 2/Zip). I can even access my files (ie, rename them via right click).Is there anyway to change their boot order or something that so my Salvaged Hard Drive load ups instead of the Original Hard Drive? Would switching their Drive letters work (Original Hard Drive goes from C to H, Salvaged Hard Drive from D to C)?I just don't want to switch and have the same hold up when starting, and have no way to undo the problem because I can't load up Windows and switch them back. Then I'll have no computer at all. I'd need to have it move on to the Original Hard Drive, or be able to remove the Salvaged Hard Drive and have it automatically go to the Original Hard Driv... Is this salvaged hard drive original to the computer you putting it into? If no, it won't work that way. You can jumper it as slave, get the files of it you want, then reformat it to use as a second drive
