Chrome Apps ( Are they safe / Verified to be ok before they are made available )

Question: Chrome Apps ( Are they safe / Verified to be ok before they are made available )

Curious as to if Chrome Apps available through Chrome for use online and offine are verified safe before they are offered for download and installation?Reason why i ask is because I found this app that was a good color selection for HTML that gave you the Hex to have this color in your html, and at the end of the install it installed a service that wants to run at start in the tray.... an application like this to want to run a service all the time seems very very fishy since to me I dont see a need for any service to be running to display a color palette make a selection and see the hex in a box below.

Preferred Solution: Chrome Apps ( Are they safe / Verified to be ok before they are made available )

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Chrome Apps ( Are they safe / Verified to be ok before they are made available )

Chrome is not as diligent in their app reviews as Apple or MS it appears...Not sayin it's a bad thing ...but maybe research the service to see...

I messed around with my Win 10 in trying to uninstall all traces of a printer software and I may have messed it up slightly. Apps that I used to install with no issues are now met with a pop message saying the following:

"The app you're trying to install is not a verified app from the store"

How do I fix it so I'm able to install apps without any popups like before?

When I click Apps at top left in Chrome it brings up a page of just Googles own Apps.
Not ones I have installed too, including Pinterest, Videostream, Chromecast, Send by Email and more.

hi i want to know if i remove my all apps and games to m.card and than hard reset the phone... will i able to get all my stuff back from m.card or not... plz help me...

Answer:apps remain safe if i remove all of my apps and games to memory card and then hard reset my phone...

In short, No.you will not.
You will not get data back for games and apps that do not utilise onedrive for cloud save.
Any game or app that is discontinued from the store will not restore as all games and app re-install directly from the store - not from your back up. Even if you have apps and games on your SD card, they most likely will be over written during the re-install process.
To restore, once the phone has finished and rebooted, when prompted log in with the same account that you used previously when you set up your phone.
I hope this clarifies how the back up system works

I noticed an issue when I searched in Google, but the search engine switched to Yahoo. So I opened Chrome Settings to hopefully remove Yahoo as a default search engine. When Chrome Settings opened, it immediately switched to Chrome Apps. It does this every time I try to open Chrome Settings.

Hello,
Please download Zemana AntiMalware and save it to your Desktop.

Install the program and once the installation is complete it will start automatically.
Without changing any options, press Scan to begin.
After the short scan is finished, if threats are detected press Next to remove them.
Note: If restart is required to finish the cleaning process, you should click Reboot. If reboot isn't required, please restart your computer manually.
Open Zemana AntiMalware again.
Click on icon and double click the latest report.
Now click File > Save As and choose your Desktop before pressing Save.
The only left thing is to attach saved report in your next message.

Sorry ahead of time if this is the improper forum for this - I couldn't see any others here that would fit the issue.
First off, basic information:
I'm running Windows 10 64 bit on a 256gig SSD with 16 gigs of ram, a GTX 970, and an i5 3570k, very gently overclocked (although I've reverted it to "normal" in my efforts to fix this issue).
This issue has persisted through two reinstalls of Windows 10 and it's absolutely infuriating.
Basically, a few different programs are crashing and throwing out errors in my Windows Event Logs with the faulting module as something related with qt5. It's different between apps, I believe, but they're generally preceded by qt5. Off the top of my head, one is QT5core.dll, I'll have to check again for the others, if it is important.
Before my first reinstall, I ran just about every virus scan known to man alongside three different rootkit detectors with, predictably, no results.
The apps that it has affected so far - EAC (EasyAntiCheat) - I'm completely unable to start EasyAntiCheat, so any game that uses it is out of the question. This includes Hurtworld, Rust, among others.
The HTC Vive installer crashes before it starts. Also pointing to a QT5core.dll fault.
ReVive, an overlay to add Oculus games to Steam VR, crashes before starting and fails to do what it needs to do. This one points to a different QT5 dll, but I can't remember it off of the top of my head.
Edit: Add Stellarium to the list. I'm fairly certain this is related to QT, ... Read more

Hi, I downloaded Index.dat analyzer to view all accessed sites on my computer from all web browsers, but when I looked through all of the index.dat files with the program, I couldn't find any sites that I visit with Google Chrome. Based on my research, sites accessed via Google Chrome also get saved in index.dat, so why couldn't I see any of them in the files?

Another question I have is, why do the local files one accesses on his computer (Documents, videos, music, pictures, etc.) get saved to the web browser's history?

Thank you very much in advance!

So far I like it. There's no bookmarks sync, but that's fixed by junction linking the favorites folder to my skydrive.

The metro browser is a lot nicer. Chrome basically just fudges their own windowing environment to throw desktop Chrome into, but IE10 is definitely designed for metro. I live how my tabs are just a quick swipe on my trackpad away.

they FINALLY added spellcheck! It works pretty well, and so far it seems to be better than Chrome's (and even has autocorrect, but fortunately it's a very mild version so it's actually useful)

I do hate how all favorites are just lumped together in metro mode. On desktop mode I have them well organized in folders, but in metro it's just a really really long and disorganized line.

Sometimes it freezes when I'm opening tabs. IE has always done this though.

I miss how in Chrome I can right-click highlighted text and click search. But it's now just one additional step, so not a problem.

For some reason the desktop and metro versions don't seem to use the exact same cookies and saved passwords.

I'm using Windows XP home on aa Advent 3216 machine with 80GB disc space. On Thursday I decided to try out Made Safe from the PCA magazine disc. The installation seemed to go OK but the option to remove temp files etc took a long time to run and in the end I had to abort it. As a result I also had to reboot but then in POST I got the message "File NTLDR Missing".I had to use system recovery but then found that all of my files were missing. The only thing I could find were short cuts in the hidden files but these short cuts didn't work. also found that in My Computer there was only 3GB of hard disk space left when I would have expected at least 60GB.I had to resort to a format and although I have got everything up and working again I am curious. Was it MadeSafe that caused the problem or could it be something else? I also found that running system recovery, on all three options, ran very quickly up to 70% but then slowed down drastically, taking up to two and a half hours to complete. Is this usual ?

Question: Safe made reboot

Hi folks, an old member here from the days of Gandolf and friends. Sadly dont get much time to contribute any more. Here for help this time. Win32:Beagle worm has got me. Very, very clever piece of code. I have eradicated the worm but it always stopped me from booting into safe mode. I installed a free program called "BootSafe". Unfortunately I now have a situation where I cannot boot at all. The dos Safe mode, Safe mode with command prompt, Last know....appear but when selected all reboot the system.I now have a dual boot system having reinstalled the XP and can access all the programs but not my saved email docs and addresses. If you clever people could find some way for me retrieve these would be ever so grateful. Many thanks,RFB 8-)

Hi folks, pulling my hair out on this one. I'm trying to clean up and create folders for the new 'all apps' alphabetical list through the StartMenu\Programs folder.

I can confirm that dragging a shortcut OUT of the folder does update and the app is removed from the list. However, dragging that same shortcut back into the folder does not refresh on the apps list.

Likewise, adding a new folder or program to the startmenu folders does not refresh the app list.

Any idea what's happening here? Does any one know what service runs in the background to monitor this and update these lists so I can troubleshoot the service?

Answer:Start menu Apps list is not updating when changes are made to folder

Hi, I take the simple view.. and for me the necessary one.. I use Classic Shell (free) 'cos
a. I don't want to be subject to the vagaries of a badly specified start menu
b. I don't want to struggle with it, just use it
c. I have a large categorised start menu with subfolders (most programs create a folder of shortcuts) and just look what MS's attempt does with that:
- all those help files are actually in separate folders.. Classic Shell shows these correctly and no issue with drag 'n drop- it just works.

And did I mention it's highly configurable - and that goes for its search feature too...

(Someone may address your actual question... sorry!)

From the two questions in this thread, it ends up as a one single topic because I figured out that they are both related.
there are two problems regarding to this software.
I want a fix to make these problems to not appear again.

1.My first problem is that when I click on the program other than Chrome, the other application never seem to switch or restore when the program is already opened.

I'll just put in a scenario. Google Chrome may work fine normally, until the time when I want to switch other programs when needed. Changing other programs in the taskbar doesn't respond at all. Clicking the icon twice, right click the icon then restore the window, or even using alt+tab doesn't switch.

Switching back to desktop seems to work, even changing other Google Chrome tabs by drag and make a different window. The exception is this window here.

2.My second problem is the taskbar showing up when I watch videos on fullscreen

Normally, it doesn't appear at all, but you know the what the problem is all about so I won't explain it in detail.

When will it appear?
These problems will only appear occasionaly. But I do know is that there is a higher chance to happen if I turn my laptop to sleep mode and turn back on. I use a laptop.

What can you really do if you want to give a solution to my problem?

You can ask me to download a different version of Google Chrome, but make sure that the version you give me is stable (I used Version 53.0.2785.89 m (64-bit)).Adjust windows settings... Read more

This is a continuation of a post i started in the XP forum.... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic377994.html

the current problem is my computer can only boot in Safe Mode... when ever it boots normal, the XP splash screen jus hangs there with the progress bar HD light running on & on & on.

I believe this happened from my deleting 2 files that were not disinfectable after last Panda Active Scan displayed results. So... i got mad and Erased em with Eraser. Now the computer loads up to the XP Splash screen and sits there with progress bar and HD light running nonstop.

The files were;
cd:windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\x9317931oc.dll
and
c;windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\xo931iq3.dll

the files were identified as Trj/CI.A Virus.

these files & eleven others came up on a Panda ActiveScan log after a scan of my puter on 2-1-11. i deleted the above files to the recycle bin. After running for couple of days & still getting search engine redirects(which had been getting for last month or so), ran another ActiveScan on 2-3-11... the log showed a Generic Trojan virus in the system volume information directory that had been Disinfected, and the above files in the recycle bin Not Disinfected... so I erased em! on this last scan there were 7 other files in the Temp folder that were questionable & sent to Panda to examine, or what ever they do with those things. They were temp files so i er... Read more

We don?t cover Google Chrome updates and new versions as regularly as we do for Firefox. Possibly because version numbers are far less relevant with Chrome. But every once in a while you do get a change and I?m just going with this quote from X-Men here to explain it best; ?This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward?. Chrome is known for its very minimal interface and just how perfectly executed it is. Firefox, after numerous updates has finally caught up but open a Firefox window and hit the Alt key, all those old menus return for a few seconds. With Chrome, the interface is so minimal that changes are hard to make, and even harder to spot. That said, here are three changes that were made to Chrome over the past few updates.

The Settings Menu

This is a pretty recent change that I noticed when I wanted to disable an extension. If you don?t visit the settings more often, the ?Tools? option is now gone. It used to expand to reveal other pages including the Extensions page that I was originally looking for. Instead, we have ?More Tools? at the very bottom and it houses the Extensions? page, developer tools, the task manager, etc. Other more obvious changes include the Cut, Copy, and Paste functions next to the new Edit option. There is better improved Zoom control as well as a full screen option.

I have an indexing utility called Wilbur that I've used for years on Windows XP. I just installed it on Windows 10. When I opened it, a dialog box came up and said how do you want to open this utility. I incorrectly thought I chose Wilbur, but somehow Google Chrome was selected. Now every time I launch it, although it launches, it also launches Chrome.

I have File Types Manager, but this is an .exe file. I don't know how to get rid of this behavior (I tried uninstalling & reinstalling.)

What can I do? Thanks.

Additional: It seems that somehow, when I open the executable, it wants to also open the help file, which is an .htm file. So maybe it's a problem with how I installed it. I still need help though.

Answer:Accidentally made Chrome open every time I start an application

Hi, try using a system restore point to restore your PC as it was before you installed the program.
(System restore will only be useful if you ever enabled it - it's off by default in Win 10, strangely).

Or, use a previously created disk image to restore your system. (If you are not in the habit of using disk imaging routinely as we strongly and repeatedly recommend- when this is fixed will be a good time to start). Disk imaging helps you to help yourself without technical help in many cases.

Failing the above, you could try uninstalling Wilbur with the help of Revo Uninstaller (free). That will search for anything related to it.

I have to admit I'm finding it hard to quite grasp what you did.

I made a credit card transaction at my community college's science computer lab.  It's an open lab for any students to use.

I didn't think much about it at the time, but then started feeling a little weird about it later on today.  I figured in the back of my mind that the university probably updates and protects these computers as well as anyone.  I always see those nightly "computers will be shutting down and updating" messages that forces us off the PCs for a while for maintenance. I figured they'd probably be just as safe is not safer than my home PC. But now I'm having some regrets, since I'm not very knowledgeable about computers.

Was my assumption right? How safe are college computers and should I block my credit card to be safe?

Feeling a bit nervous and upset with myself at the moment.  I was Christmas gift browsing on the internet and wanted to make a purchase right away while it was fresh on my mind, but didn't consider the ramifications of my actions that deeply until driving home later.

New to all this. Hope someone can help me resurrect my system.
Had a working home Dell stand-alone computer with WinXP. Picked up Spyware that has popup "Warning! Potential Spyware Operation". Some symptoms before my situation got worse are missing control panel, constant popups of above, denied access to system clock, some problems with IE changing security options. My last operation was to use Spybot to fix problems. Now I cannot run or do anything once the desktop appears. I can get into safe mode to access files, but no IE connection. What if anything can be done to get my system back running? Where do I start? I am using another computer to post this thread. I have a flash drive to transfer files if needed.

Answer:Where Are My Chrome Apps

In ">>" those are typically bookmarks, at least in my experience.

What you can do is right click on your bookmark or any other toolbar, then click "Show App shortcut"

OR

Go to chrome://apps/

OR

Download Chrome App Launcher and you can have the app launcher pinned to your start toolbar or an icon on your desktop

I think you can get to them also from the New Tab window as well.

When I ciick on the new tab that shows apps three out of four apps I have selected are showing generic icons rather than the normal icons, also three out of the four are grey; they are as follows:-

1] Web Store-----------color
2] YouTube-------------grey
3] Google Search-----grey
4] Gmail-----------------grey

I have run the Chrome Cleaner, uninstalled/re-installed Chrome, deleted the app extension, reinstalled the app extension to no avail. Each time the grey icons appear and on the last go round they appeared as generic cubes. To boot the same condition applies to my other two computers. It seems when I install Chrome each time this condition manifests itself no matter where I install it; it's like it's locked in to any install on any machine be it laptop or desktop, like I inherit it. I use symantec antivirus and spybot. Was going to go for spywareblaster but it doesn't protect chrome from what i can tell.

Are there some more freeware anti-virus, spyware, or malware programs i should get?

Thanks.

Answer:New W7 install chrome user. which apps?

Malwarebytes is nice to have for daily or weekly scans. Don't install more than one active anti-virus program as two programs can interfere with each other and cause blue screens, lockups or other strange behavior.

Chrome doesn't remember my app preferences. It asks me every time if I want to open a link with a particular app. How do I make chrome remember my preferences?
PS: For the moderator who closed down my second thread- I only gave torrent as an example. It happens with other links as well - like pdf's. I want to know why chrome isnt saving my preferences, so dont blindly close down this thread as well.

Answer:Chrome doesn't remember associated apps

Chrome doesn't remember APP preferences for the majority of file types
it is the windows file association settings that you need to look at
Chrome will automatically open PDFs in Chrome, unless you change Chrome settings to use an external program, Like adobe reader

To offer any assistance we need to know Exactly what file types or extensions Chrome is not opening in the program you want and what program it tries to open them with
I warn you now, If these are torrents or other file types associated with torrents, dodgy downloaders or similar this will be closed

Google introduced Smart Lock with Android Lollipop, but can be used with Chrome browser, Android apps and Chromebook owners.

"Smart Lock for Chrome and apps
Let Smart Lock keep track of all your passwords. Smart Lock safeguards usernames and passwords in Chrome and in certain mobile apps."

What are your views on Google Smart Lock for Chrome (browser) and using it to log into Android apps?
FYI: Smart Lock currently does not work for Chrome Sync with a custom passphrase (ex. not your Google password). Smart Lock also provides for other purposes, but wish to focus on Smart Lock as an alternative to your default password manager.

Answer:Are these apps safe on my PC?

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then reboot &

Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R275 25.03.2004 or a higher number/later date

Question: What apps are safe

I have now done a complete reinstall of the upgrade and I don't want to take the same mistake again with some very annoying pop ups.

I was quite surprised at the number of available apps when I first signed in and I downloaded some photo ones and other stuff I thought would be handy but then I started getting very annoying pop up ads whenever I opened a tab.

Now I started to block them one by one with my security but they seemed never ending and I also tried getting rid of IE10 but now find it is not possible but I would like to find out from some of the old hands which apps from that extensive listing are safe or is it better to leave well alone??

Answer:What apps are safe

All store apps are pretty safe. They run with limited permissions under a new integrity level created specifically for them.

Some apps are ad-based, and often you can buy the full version to get rid of ads. But displaying ads is not a security breach. If you don't want an app on your PC, uninstall it and forget it.

Hi all, I desperately need help. I just installed Windows 8.0 Pro on a new PC and I want to keep it secure and safe. I'm really worried about installing apps on the Windows 8 PC because the apps might have a back-door to communicate with someone online and send out my personal information or log of all my keystrokes. I haven't installed any apps and I donít want to until I have a list of 'safe apps' so I can feel calm knowing that my system is safe.

I need a list of 'safe apps' so I know the apps I'm running are safe.

Are OpenSource apps like from sourceforge more safe than closed source apps?

How can I be sure that apps are safe?

Please help me!

Reinstalling chrome and ff did not fix application blocked from loading. Also Malwarebytes installer, rKill, TDSSkiller and Esets installer(?) won't run either even with renaming the files.

When loading "blocked" applications, there is no warning or error message to say they couldn't load.

Actually... Its weird but I'm in Safemode and I reinstalled firefox and it works. And so does Chrome now as well (which is weird because I haven't done anything to fix it that I can think of and it wasn't working earlier). I still can't load rKill, antimalware bytes installer so theres still something wrong.

I installed IE11(maybe prematurely) booted into normal mode and Firefox chrome and IE11 still don't load.

Safemode again, all browsers work. (I had to click on chrome heaps of times to get it to load 1 instance)

Hi,

I'm having a really annoying problem since I updated to Windows 10. When Google Chrome is open and when thats the app I'm using, I can't click other open apps from my taskbar. Like for example if I have Word open as well, I can't switch to Word just by clicking on to the tab at the bottom. I have to minimize Chrome, and then click on Word at the bottom.

It seems to only do this when Chrome is app I'm using. If I have Word and Spotify open, switching between those two from the taskbar isn't a problem.

Can anyone help?

Answer:Cannot click other apps from taskbar when Chrome is open

Welcome to the Ten forum.

When you say updated to Windows 10 did you update from Windows 8.x? I ask as I believe in Windows 8.1 you could get chrome as a real app rather than a program. Like the way you could run IE. I know this sounds like double talk, aren't all apps just programs?

I believe if you click on the three bars in upper right, may be three dots if they are keeping look and feel the same, there is a way to sign out of app and go back to the "desktop" version.

Failing that I would uninstall chrome and then re-install. There is a downside to this as you will lose installed extension / apps and bookmarks unless you save them. Now if you sign into Chrome so your Chrome experience is replicated across your devices as I do, then that info should be in cloud and will reappear when you sign in. I would still do some screen prints of extension installed so you can quickly re-install and you call google where chrome has saved your bookmarks for a quick backup.

Right-click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Internet Options and check the settings in the Connections tab and the LAN button, only item that usually should be checked is at the top for Automatically detect......... Some ISPs may specify different settings and some infections can change to use Proxy settings. Could right-click the Start button, go to Command Prompt, either one, the type ping and the name of a site such as your ISP or google.com to see if you get a return message. Use only what is in bold, no www. or https://, etc. Could use most any Domain but some will block the ping command. If you get a message back with 4 lines that mention speed or time you Internet connection is working.

Seems like pretty big news to make Chrome OS more of a serious OS than a glorified browser platform.

Microsoft has made some changes to make Windows cheaper for OEMs like "Windows with Bing" and and free licenses for tablets under 9 inches. But this is going to light even more of a fire underneath them.

How safe are portable apps ?

Answer:Portable Apps - how safe are they ?

Portable apps are safe to use, when downloaded from a reliable source. Developers usually have portable builds readily available for their users (ie. CCleaner Portable (.zip)), otherwise PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable, and cloud drives is a good place to start.

You can also create your own portable versions of installer-based software, and you can find them online.
- Software Protection, Software Licensing, Software Virtualization
- Evalaze application virtualization | evalaze

Avoid Portable versions of cracked commercial software such as Photoshop Portable as they may contain a nasty surprise. Adobe don't officially provide portable versions, so there is high chance it's pirated.

What is the pros and con's in using portable apps? regarding security and performance .

Answer:How safe is the portable apps??

Security wise? They can be infected too. Although I haven't experienced running an infected one that can bleed infection into the system. In case they appear to be infected, I just delete everything and replace it with a zipped backup.

Performance? Running an app exclusively from a folder from an HDD is faster than one running from a USB drive. Although you can install a portable app on your HDD, the main purpose of portability is that you can carry it with you always.

Here's what on my USB drive

Good morning, I need help. I have great knowledge with computers, however, after upgrading IE I had to do a total restore on HP windows vista home premium. I cannot get the SP 1&2 they are no longer supported. I cannot upgrade to anthing now...... Anyway I did get this computer up and running. I chose firefox, google just wasn't working..... On facebook, of course I can play farm apps like Farmtown, "not owned by zynga".... everything loaded and runs smooth. On farmville, "owned by zynga", if it loads it will not run. Shows some items might be unsecure, or the flash player constantly crashes. Yesterday I started my computer in safe mode.... For whatever reason, I clicked on farmville app and it ran like it has never before. Everything is way to large to play...

I guess my question is, am I missing a setting or something? If it runs that good in safe mode, but chuggs, crashes, refreshing, in normal mode makes me think it is something that I might have changed in my setting or something.... I have been at this for a week. Please any advice will be so greatly appreciated.

Sincerely Babette

Hi and welcome to TSG.

I am not sure about the exact problem, however I will say that Windows Vista Service Packs are still available through Microsoft and it should still update through Windows Update. Vista SP2 has extended support through to April 2017 so should be no problems there.

The best (and easiest) way to do it is to use Windows Update, however if you are having problems you can get the manual installers below:

Windows Vista SP1 32bit download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=30

Windows Vista SP1 64bit download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21299

Windows Vista SP2 32bit download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16468

Windows Vista SP2 64bit download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17669

If you have up installed these Service Packs then that could be a significant contributor towards your problems, you are likely missing numerous updates, bug fixes and patches.

First thing you need to do is ensure you have all the correct drivers installed and make sure Windows is fully patched and up to date.

Background pages in Google Chrome have been around for a while now, in the dev channel. While Google has provided some info, it's only now explaining in detail what the feature does and how it's useful. It's also making the functionality available to hosted apps, it has only been available for packaged apps and extensions so far.

"Apps and extensions that use the new 'background' feature can continue to run in the background?even if the user closes down all of Chrome?s windows," Andrew Wilson, Software Engineer and Michael Mahemoff, Developer Relations, wrote.

"These windows are not going to be visible but they will be able to perform tasks like checking for server-side changes and pre-emptively loading content into local storage," they explained.

I love Chrome but all i see is people having redirects and problems as of late,  i took chrome off yesterday because i was having major problems updating and installed Firefox, is it safe to go back or is it to unstable. Thanks  a lotEdit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:Safe to use Chrome now or something else?

Chrome is not the cause of the issue when you are having re-directs.

You are most likely infected with a toolbar or extension inside the browser - which would also infect Internet Explorer and Firefox.

For Chrome - open Chrome, click on the 3 horizontal lines (its a button right below the X) in the top right corner - this bring up a windows with all the options for chrome.

Go down and select "settings" - this will open a new tab in chrome which have all the settings listed in it.

In the top left corner, click on the word extensions - delete ALL extensions from there.

Next click on the word settings - this will bring you back to the original settings page - under "ON STARTUP" : click the bubble to open a specific web page, then click on the blue works next to it that say "set pages" - delete any pages that are saved there - and set it to a homepage that you know is safe, for example: www.google.com

Next, under "APPEARANCE" - check the box to show home button, then on the right, click the the word "change" (it will be blue, like a link)

change the home button to a link that is safe, for example: www.google.com

Next, go down to the "SEARCH" - click on the drop down menu, and choose google from the list (this is the search engine that will be used if you were to search using the URL bar in Chrome .

Next, to the right of that, click on the "manage search engines" button, and that is where any and all search engines tha... Read more

This happens with few different apps but also with windows explorer sometimes (?) so i'd really like to undestand why, maybe there's just something to turn on/off?

Answer:APP CRASH exisiting apps like bittorrent , tune up utilites , chrome

Are you using the registry cleaning feature of Tune Up Utilities? Many of us on the forums actually do not recommend automated optimization tools for Windows 7. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. We especially do not recommend registry cleaning as an "optimization" step because automated registry cleaning causes more harm to the registry than it actually repairs.

In the future, if you need help optimizing Windows 7, please post a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums or follow the tutorial enclosed in that forum to Optimize Windows 7.
See if you can do a System Restore to before the problems began. Then uninstall Tune Up Utilities, or stop using its registry cleaning feature. More than likely, your registry has been compromised by the software and any more repairs will just make matters worse. Let us know if System Restore resolves the issue.

Hello,

I generally find the white background of all the applications particular Word, Excell and web browser very tiring if you work long hours on big screen > 25 inches.

How can I easily apply a change on these background colour on every apps, something like for Google Chrome extension "PlainClothes"
See https://chrome.google.com/extensions...amidabhmckbddc

Thanks

Answer:How to easily change bg color in all apps -Word, IE, Chrome, Notepad?

Welcome to SF! And Merry Christmas!

Click on Start button
type: change window colors and metrics
In the window that opens, click in the area that says "Window Text"
The Drop Box text should say "Window"
Now you can choose the foreground and background colors.
Once happy with your changes, "OK" your way out.

Caveat: Not all programs are going to pay attention to these new settings. I'd say most native Windows will, but others may not
Tip: You can change many window properties here; click the Drop Box for a long list of choices

hope this helps!

I recently got the Blue Screen of Death, and after shutting it down and starting it back up (like I have done before); my computer starts up fine, but I can't seem to start any applications. I'll click one (say Google Chrome), it'll appear to be loading (hour glass) and then nothing. I also cannot connect to the internet. All it says is it's an "Unidentified Network." I can't even use Windows Explorer to use system restore (not that there is one to do it from). But, if I start up my computer in Safe Mode everything works just fine. Applications start up and work, Windows Explorer works, and so does Internet.

I've scanned my computer numerous time (with Malwarebytes and Avast!) and removed anything that came up. But, it still hasn't fixed the problem. I've also run HiJack This, but for the lie of me don't know what to do with it.

What could be causing this? What can I do resolve this problem?

Answer:Internet and Apps only work in Safe Mode

Welcome to TSG:
If everything works in safe mode with networking but not normal mode,my guess would be an application running in normal not running in safe mode.
So,I would take a look at the list of apps running in both modes and investigate the ones not running in safe mode.
This will probably be a bit labor intensive, but given your description,it seems to be the best avenue to pursue at the moment.
Listing running tasks in safe and normal mode.

Open a command prompt in normal mode and type the following command.

tasklist >c:\nortasks.txt
Do it again in safe mode with networking and use this command.

tasklist >c:\saftasks.txt

This will give you two text files in the root of C: that list the tasks running in each mode. Compare the lists and see what unique processes are running in normal mode.

Issues began Thursday night, I believe. I suspect someone is the family was using my machine and clicked yes to a pop up of some kind, though no one will fess up. Issues are sudden and different than anything previous.
A couple of program errors pop up when apps try to load at start up.
- acmon.exe the application was unable to start correctly 0x00000e5
- InsOnCfg.exe was unable to start correctly 0x00000e5
Most programs now won't start at all on regular boot up. Firefox opens but hangs unresponsive after 2-3 pages. When I can finally get firefox to close I get a breakpoint error
- The exception breakpoint . A breakpoint has been reached 0x80000003 occured in the application at location 0x0000000006C30EC83
Chrome & Edge won't open at all. Avast, MalwareBytes, etc. also won't open at all. Most open and seem to function normally in safe mode, though I still get "Tips can't be opened using the built-in administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again."
I did Repair_windows.exe twice in safe mode but it did not fix the issues. Chrome would fail to open during the fixing process with the administrator account error.
Friday, I downloaded a Samsung update & repair program for my phone. Thought that might be it. When I tried to uninstall it, settings would open, but uninstall programs wouldn't. I've been running Windows Anniversary Update for about a week now being a Windows Insider. Currently running all windows security (Defender and Firewall) They definitely have improved security with this update. Defender in real time has taken action a few times and showing me a toast with some details. Since it has shown more automatic defensive tactics in the last 7 days than my last setup on Windows 10 did in 7 days i'm giving it a try for now. I'm also using adblock since extensions are now live in Microsoft Edge.

I have all items checked in defender including cloud protection and a few periodic offline scans.

Are there companion apps safe to run like a anti-exploit or any of those extras people run besides a full out AV or Malware app? I know Defender isn't checking every single thing possible. I just don't know what it isn't checking. I hate those overly complicated programs but love the ease of some like Hitman Pro Alert - That lists options and either enable it or disable it. Zemana Anti-Logger is another fav of mine also. So guys let me know.

FYI for guys who aren't running Anniversary build 1607 14393.5 . They definitely improved Windows 10 with this one. Everything runs great. Start, reboot, shutdown have improved dramatically. Memory is used almost perfect on my 4GB ram system and I multi-task. Little tweaks here and there. They even enabled the option to have defender run periodic scans to allow it to be used with a full AV pr... Read more

Windows Security by itself is really good but you should probably run Zemana AntiLogger/Malware for a little extra scanning and protection.

What is the pros and con's in using portable apps? regarding security and performance .

Answer:How safe Internet Security the portable apps??

Security wise? They can be infected too. Although I haven't experienced running an infected one that can bleed infection into the system. In case they appear to be infected, I just delete everything and replace it with a zipped backup.

Performance? Running an app exclusively from a folder from an HDD is faster than one running from a USB drive. Although you can install a portable app on your HDD, the main purpose of portability is that you can carry it with you always.

Here's what on my USB drive

As far as I know, all so called free and even paid spy apps are either malware or viruses.BUT, some (most succesfull) of them have good support teams, marketing departments and update their apps regurlary, which makes them look like a reliable companies. So if for any reasons I need to install a monitoring app on my mobile phone, can I count on them to do their work for money I paid, without ruining my phone or passing my data to the third parties?Apps I'm talking about can be found, for example, on this page - http://www.toptrackingapps.com/Will be grateful for first-hands experiences.

Answer:Are the commercial phone tracking apps safe?

Just don't be too surprised about what may be built in to an app designed to spy on people. All such programs are totally immoral IMO so I wouldn't expect the writers to have any scruples.Caveat emptor.

This was originally posted in the malware forum. TimW found no viruses in my logs and suggested I report here for help. Issues described below are unchanged after going through the malwars process and finishing it up by removing the tools and closing out MGclean.bat. Avast was still not opening in regular nor safe mode so I'm reinstalling it in safe mode. I did not attach logs from malware scan to this post.

Well I head alot of interesting statements by people saying, that google chrome Steals your information, you enter while Browsing. Is this true?

If not or it is, Please provide proof.

Thanks,
Cody.

Answer:Is google Chrome safe?

I have used google chrome since it first came out. The only problem I heard of was when you downloaded a file it does not ask you to confirm it, it automatically just executes and downloads the file.
I buy things online through chrome also and have never had a problem.
Run an antivirus scan, and I would advise you to download the free version of malwarebytes antimalware, and run a quick scan periodically.

Google chrome is a much better alternative to internet explorer. And it has great themes too when you install the beta version.

It is a beta, it will have flaws just as any other program. Just don't put your credit card information in the beta version of it, and/or turn off autofill.

I have a few chrome extensions that I have been using and trusting for a long time.
Now I am wondering whether they might be harvesting login credentials or other sensitive info, or perhaps they are being exploited by third party actors for that purpose.

For instance, I have an extension called Disable HTML5 Autoplay
It has permissions like this: read and change all your data on the websites you visit.
The dev seems to have a respectable presence on Github, but how do I know whether he uses the right security measures?

I have another extension, for Gmail, called Gmelius
It has similar permissions, but limited to certain google domains.

I don't really care if someone finds out what I am planning on buying my wife for her birthday, but I don't want them to finance their own purchases from my banking account...

I think with HTML5 autoplay disabler, those permissions are reasonable because it has to read the contents in the websites and disable html5 videos
I suggest if you wanna check if the extensions are relatively safe or not, you can scan the crx files with herdProtect or reasoncore because their engine can detect bad google chrome extensions. if there is detection, we should avoid them but if no detection, we should also be careful

Where do I start. W7 x64, i5 2500, 16GB ram...

My PC usually stays on 24-7. Few days ago I decided to shut it down and noticed that it stops on the final blue screen on shutdown, the nice one with wallpaper, and the loading cursor kept spinning...for 20 minutes. So I pushed the button and thought nothing of it.

Few days later I needed to restart it and it hung on restart.

Today I noticed that if I'm in normal mode I can not install any software, it just get stuck halfway installation, I tried chkdsk in safe mode and the check disk in Tweaking Windows Repair that starts before the W7 loads, no error. Crystalinfo showed that the disk health is OK on both of my partitions.

Strange thing happens when I browse in Chrome...if I drag an image to desktop, I need to refresh the desktop before I actually see the jpg file on desktop. If I empty the recycle bin, I need to refresh to see the empty icon.

I don't know where to look. Malwarebytes scan showed no infections. MSE quick scan also reports clean.

I tried rkill once and it terminated 1 process: nlssrv32.exe (PID: 2032) [WD-HEUR] if that means anything.

Please help if you can, I'm lost and need this machine up and running.

Answer:Can't install apps, Chrome hangs on flash, system won't restart/shtdwn

It sounds like you have a corrupt Windows file somewhere.  The first thing I'd try would be to run SFC.  Click Start and type CMD in the search window, then right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator.  From the command prompt type sfc /scannow and press enter.  This will scan for corrupt files and attempt to repair them.  If that doesn't work, make a repair disc and boot from it to run a repair attempt.  One other thing you could try would be System Restore to a time prior to the beginning of the problem.

Good luck.

http://www.winbeta.org/news/new-windows-81-update-1-screenshots-leak-boot-desktop-now-default

I think that images of the chrome for close button were the only thing that's been rumored to part of the modern UI changes in this release that hadn't leaked before today. As I suspected there is a minimize button which pretty much had to be there if modern apps can now be pinned to the taskbar. And it looks like you boot to the desktop by default, at least with a keyboard and mouse device. What's interesting is that the criticisms now seem to be coming more from the people that like Metro, which isn't necessarily a surprise.

Again, I'm sure nothing here will change the opinion of those that are the most ardent opponents of 8 but this does really seem to be an attempt at improving integration and making the modern UI more familiar to desktop users.

Answer:More chrome for Metro apps shown in new Windows 8.1 Update 1 leaked screenshots

Boot to the desktop by default?

I've noticed that there are a lot of folders in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Packages and their names sound like Metro apps. The folder contain subfolder for Metro apps I no longer use and even have uninstalled them.

The question is: why weren't they deleted next to applications uninstalls and is it safe to delete them manually?

Answer:Safe to delete unused Metro apps folders

You could make a system image first & then delete them & see what happens.

Someone else may have a better suggestion.

Microsoft XP media centre edition SP2

have seen other threads talking about things like "combofix" will this work on my laptop? Also saw one saying remove "enable third party browser extensions" which I have done but no change.

This is what happened:

I became infected by "Antivirus Trigger" which stopped everything working except thier pop ups of course.
I then was told to download Smitfraudfix which I had to download on to a disk on another computer and then could only run in "safe mode " on the infect laptop, which I did.

result - Anitivirus trigger does not now come up when machine is switched on, but nothing works in normal, very slow opening and as I try to open IE it totally freezes and says (not responding).

error says:
szAppName : iexplorer.exe
szAppVer : 7.0.6000.16735
szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0

C:\Docume~1\gary\Locals~1\Temp\WER8555.dir00\appcompat.txt

in short, I am doing this from the safe mode on my laptop as nothing works when starting up normally,

I'm wondering if Google Chrome 2015 is safe to use. Someone told me that Google Chrome 2015 is a virus.

Thanks,

Harkcomp

Answer:Is Google Chrome 2015 safe to use

I wouldn't use anything called Google Chrome 2015. The official version of Chrome doesn't use the year to indicate the version. Version 39 is the most current. If you want to use Chrome, be sure to download it from the official site:
