Occasionally, incorrect characters being outputted

Question: Occasionally, incorrect characters being outputted

This is pretty strange, and I don't really know how to explain it, but I'll try. Sometimes, when I'm typing online, the character that appears isn't the character I typed. For example, if I press the ' key it will show up as ?. Closing and restarting the browser will temporarily solve the problem, but about 40 minutes later, ' = ? again. I thought it was a firefox problem, but it happens in chrome as well. I thought it was a hardware problem, but wouldn't that mean the ' key would always result in a ?? I've searched online, but the only solutions seem to be for when the keyboard consistently output incorrect characters. I'm getting sick of closing my browser every 40 minutes or having to open up character map just so I can finish typing a reply before having to restart my browser, so any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Occasionally, incorrect characters being outputted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Occasionally, incorrect characters being outputted

Does this happen in every app (ie, Notepad, Word, etc) or only in the browser? Check the language settings in Control Panel.

I'm trying to help a user at my office, who has received a Word document from a co-worker and some characters are not displaying correctly. For example, circles that are meant to be filled in are appearing as capital Fs. Like this:

Also, some apostrophes (') are appearing as equal signs (=) but not all.

So far, I've checked that the writer is using MS Word 02 (yep), I've run Detect & Repair, deleted all templates, uninstalled and reinstalled, and applied Office XP SP3. Nothing working so far.

Answer:Incorrect characters in Word 2002

Sounds like they created the doc with a font that your user doesn't have.

I have an old Dell inspiron e1505 laptop. When the login screen appears I am unable to login because my keyboard is typing incorrect characters.

Answer:Keyboard on laptop typing incorrect characters

HI, and welcome to TSG...

You may have the Num lock on. Its located at the top-right of the keyboard above the F11 key. If it is on, there should be one of the four indicator lights illuminated to the left of the power button. The first on, actually.

Good luck..

Hello, thanks for any help. My "3edc" keys are typing incorrect characters. They display different items each time I press the keys. I replaced the keyboard and it solved the problem for a few weeks, then the same problem returned. I do not have the original Windows CD. Hello All,

I have a very odd issue here.. I have a fairly inexpensive ($15?) Rosewill chiclet keyboard that I absolutely love. I spilled coffee on it so I quickly unplugged it used a blow dryer on it with cool air. I then let is air dry outside on a sunny day and when I was certain it was dried out I tried it. It's perfect, no issues. That is, until recently it started doing weird things such as pressing L makes the computer think I'm pressing 3, K thinks it's 6, etc etc.

Now when I quickly unplug the keyboard and plug it back into the USB it comes back to functioning properly. Rebooting also resolves this. But usually once to 4+ times a day it does this. I play battlefield 4, so it becomes very apparent that the keyboard is acting up when you press L to chat with your squad and it doesn't bring up the chat screen.

Anyway, here are some things I've tried:

1- Numlock is off
2- Different USB Port
3- Checked my region settings

Now, I assumed like I am sure a lot of you are that "it must be the keyboard is shorted out in some way from the coffee". Well it's a cheap enough keyboard that I love enough, so I bought a new one! Same thing keeps happening! I try it on my other computer and neither keyboard seems to have this issue repeat. I am not sure if it's just coincidence or not, but it all started after I spilled the coffee.. I should note that none of my other USB devices are suffering from any weird glitches, at least none that... Read more

For instance say I want to output sound through both my external sound card, HDMI audio output and Laptop speakers.

How would I accomplish this?

I'd actually like to how like 7.1 surround

right now my sound is hooked up like this

USB to M-Audio Fast-Track Pro

which is hooked up to both a 5.1 surround reciever through S/PDIF

and Outputted through RCA to regular computer speakers with a subwoffer

similar to this model

Also my computer is hooked up to a TV through HDMI which also can be used as a sound source.

Right now the FT Pro only outputs to the surround speakers.

How can I output to all sources.

Answer:Having sound outputted to multiple sources

Windows sounds can only go through one output at a time. So that would be your default playback device i.e. the FT Pro,

Now, if you run a program like Winamp or PowerDVD, or any audio editing software, from within that software, you can choose an output for only that program instead of default. Only the media being played will be heard at this output. Not Windows sounds.

You can't clone or synchronize the outputs to all be the same, as you're asking. That would be a very useful feature that Microsoft could implement with little effort in a SP, I'm guessing. Perhaps if you search the net, you could find a 3rd party app to do this. I haven't seen any though.

Here's an interesting page I found about it:

I have a coloured page and need to take white print out on that, but the resulting print is blank and the white text is not printed at all. Is there any solution to get white printouts on coloured sheets ?

Answer:White text not outputted on print outs

Hi there,

Printers do not print in white. What you can do is make the text a gray color and that will print.

Maybe ten per cent of the time, my T43 won't start. In these cases, if AC is connected, the light on the lid doesn't light. I push the start button and nothing happens.  Power adapter provides correct voltage.  If I remove and replace the battery (in good condition) it will usually start up right away. I've never had to resort to the reset routine, just remove/replace the battery. Certainly not the the biggest problem, but I wonder if someone can suggest the cause or what to expect in the future? Otherwise, it works fine. Cheers T43 2668-46U with Ubuntu 9.10

Answer:T43 startup occasionally fails/occasionally "dead"

I had the same problem on my T43-1871 It was getting to the point where every other time it would either do "nothing" when i pressed the power button to showing the IBM Thinkpad splash bios screen.. to loading to the WIN7 Loading screen and freezing.  (sorry about the run on sentence)  but it has been a long weekend trying to fix this computer...  Anyway, before that i was having random freezes... it was getting annoying then the startup problem started happening... So i tried a few things to get it working right again... First off i removed all my ram and replaced 2, 1 Gig sticks with 1 2 gig in my main slot under the keyboard, i then used partition magic to remove everything, i left the entire drive as "unpartitioned space" i let win7 format my drive for me re-installed and i haven't had any issues YET.. but i really hope my motherboard or CPU isn't going bad...

I have two excel spreadsheet that I need to compare using vlookup, using case number to do so. The two sheets have case number stored differently, for example, one has the, displayed as 2012DT00001 or 2001CM00012 and the other sheet displays them as 2012DT1 or 2001CM12. Obviously, they are the same record but when using vlookup to compare the record and bring over information that is on one and not the other it does not work well. I have tried using vlookup to compare and look for approximate matches (TRUE). However, when I look at a sampling of the information it misses 80% of the records. At this point, I am thinking that the vlookup function is missing those records as a result of the two case numbers being different as a result of the unneeded zeros in the one. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How can i edit characters within a string of characters?

Here are two ways to do it:With your data in Column A:
1) 2012DT00001 2012DT1
2) 2001CM00012 2001CM12
In cell B1 enter the formula: =LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5))Drag down as needed. You can now use Column B in your =VLOOKUP() something along the lines of:=VLOOKUP(B1,Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The second way is to use the formula directly in your =VLOOKUP() which eliminates the need for column BSomething like:=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)),Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The trick is in the: VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)) section, it takes the last five characters of your text string, IE 00001 or 00012and converts them from TEXT to a NUMBER, and since Excel strips out any leading zeros in a number you end up with your required digit.See how that works for you.MIKE

My brother-in-law, has had his old PC rebuilt to his spec. But now occasionally it just goes dead, and after a while he can press the start button, and all is well.?Is it fair to assume, that the power supply was not upgraded, leading to the additional strain on the old one ?Your help and views, please.Regards Martin P

Answer:PC Occasionally goes off!!

It could be the PSU is not up to the job, but without knowing exactly what he has (case/CPU/graphics/sound cards/drives and PSU) makes the job of suggesting/confirming this as the cause almost impossible. It could also be that his spec failed to take consideration of the extra heat being produced and the PC is over heating. Equally if all the dust/fluff from previous use was not removed.

My second pc sometimes will not boot up, not even into post. It switches on, fans spin up, the hard drive light comes on and stays on as does the dvd writer light, although the dvd rom light goes off. I can reset, switch off and restart the machine and nothing more than the above.
Most of the time it happily boots up but just occasionally it behave as above. Tonight I had it on for about one hour, did some work on it copying some files across, switched it off for 30mins or so and now it wont boot.
I have checked and reseated all IDE cables, ram modules, video card, I have disconnected the dvd's and even the hard drive but still no success. I will probably turn it on tomorrow and it will be fine.
Occasionally it will boot into post and throw up an error message about it having failed to post several times and to hit F2 to enter BIOS or F1 to load defaults then it reboots and sometimes boots into windows and sometimes not.
I'm curious as to whats going on here, anyone with some suggestions?

Answer:PC not booting up occasionally.

It could be the psu is on the way out!!
It could be the mobo is on the way out!!
It could be the ram is on the way out!!
It could be the bios batter is nearly flat, replacing it may be a good idea!!

Get speedfan from the downloads section and use it to monitor things on it for a while!!!

Google and get memtest and use it to test the ram for atleast 8 passes!!!!

I am running Win XP on an HP Pavillion zt1000 (1.0 Ghz w/ 512 MB RAM). I use IE 6.0 on broadband (Road Runner cable).

A few days ago I noticed IE hangs up my system as the page attempts to finish loading. However, it doesn't seem to affect the entire system. Sometimes the other programs running (e. g. Outlook) don't appear to be affected. Sometimes they are. Essentially, I can't do much of anything until it finishes loading. I can see the status indicator at the bottom of the page is full but not yet gone. After about 10-15 seconds the page completes and I can now navigate. Each page or new site I go to seems to be affected, although not all of them. Bottom line, there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason behind the behavior.

I haven't loaded any new software or installed any new hardware. My last software install was about a month ago.
Following are the actions I've taken so far:

1. Ran WinDoctor and Speed Disk. No change.

2. Ran Norton AntiVirus. No viruses and no change.

3. Reset Web Settings on IE. No change.

Not sure what else I can do. I thought reinstalling Win XP might help but not sure of the corrrect sequence of actions.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recently installed a Radeon HD6850 with a new ModXstream-Pro 700W Power supply. It came with the sufficient cables, put was a pain to install as it was a bit longer than the previous pwr supply. After a few days the tower would not power back up. No lights/fans, nothing. I then replaced the current power cable with the one that the supply came with, and it turned on. Just a week later it did the same thing. So i tested the cable on another tower and it worked fine, so i opened up the tower to see if anything looked fishy. I noticed the end of the pci-e cable going in to the power supply was missing 2 wires going in to the for two right nodes, so i replaced that cable with my other pci-e cable. The thing that worries me is that the power supply to the motherboard is not snapping in. In goes in all the way, but the piece of plastic that is supposed to snap in to place is not doing so. I made sure that was all the way in and closed her up and still nothing... after 30 seconds it powered up by itself. I'm not sure if the power supply is faulty, or the connection is bad... im just not sure what to do here.

It sounds to me like the power supply or possibly the switch on the front of your PC.

Hey Techguys...

I am using IE 7 and my wife and I have noticed that as we are browsing, we occasionally get redirected to another page. These aren't necessarily pornographic pages, but they are suggestive. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does the first thing that happens is another small IE window (blank) opens in the upper left corner and then the page we are viewing redirects to various odd pages. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, I'm using Vista, if that is needed. Thanks ya'll...

Hi all,
I'm using an Asus A53SV laptop running on Windows 7 Home Premium 64x

Occasionally when I start my laptop, I'll find the USB 3.0 not functioning. I would plug a USB hub as there's not enough USB ports for all my devices. Whenever the USB 3.0 is not working, I would use the driver from Asus driver website to repair the driver function. After the repair, the port would work again, but will need to reinstall all the devices attached to the port.

My question is, why is this happening?

Answer:USB 3.0 Occasionally not functioning

Anyone know what is happening? I have same problem also. Thanks.

Hi All,May seem a bit daft this one but I need to know,Someone was selling a CX3200 Epson printer for next to nothing so I bought it, I have another Epson that does a good job for me on another computer.I want to install the 3200 on a laptop but only use it occasionally, what is the best way to use the new printer as once the laptop detects it and hopefully gets it working properly I will only need it every so often and it's quite a big printer, is it best to power down the laptop, then take out the USB lead ? then plug back into the USB before booting the laptop wnenever we need to print?, I ask as I don't want the Laptop keep finding new hardware and trying to configure each time I need to print.Hope you get my drift!Baskerville.

Answer:Using Printer occasionally.

Just unplug it. Plug it back in when you need it, preferably to the same port. It will be remembered when you switch on without any reinstallation.

I occasionally get the BSOD on my pc and I am quite surprised as I have not installed any new software. Someone suggested that I try out ComboFix to see if the problem can be fixed. Would it help if I were to attach the ComboFix scan report. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate with Kaspersky AntiVirus. Please advise. Thank you.

I'm stumbling blind through all the more technical aspects of my computer, so please look kindly on me! I have a brand-new computer, put together by a relative with almost all new parts. It's running Windows XP. Occasionally it crashes, sometimes I get error messages about the registry, and every once in a while the clock is wrong. I understand a bit about stop errors (because of Microsoft's nice error-reporting service) but I don't know how to find out what is causing them. Something about a driver, but how do I know which driver? The computer seems to crash randomly, not with any discernable pattern or regularity. I suspect there's something wrong with the DVD player- music sometimes skips if I'm playing from a CD, and once the computer crashed while I was playing a large video file. Then again, I've played DVDs with no problem quite a few times and I've always been able to copy and burn.
When the computer blue-screens, it shuts down before I can read any of it. From the event viewer, these are the error messages:
The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.
0x80072751 (I believe this one was referring to the problem with the clock being off.)

Please let me know what other information is needed (and where to find it)!

Thank you for reading this!

Answer:XP Crashes Occasionally

Some stop errors will tell the driver if one is indicated, but not all do.

You can research STOP errors using this site:

Have you tested the ram?

If you would like me to look at a few of them do this:

Navigate to c:\windows\minidump

Create a new folder on the desktop and name it "dumpcheck". Copy a few of the most recent minidump files to that folder -- then close the folder and right click on it and select from the right click menu "compress to....(folder"

In the reply window here select the manage attachments button. Select "choose" and browse to the zipped folder and upload it here as an attachment.

The CDRom error probably occured when you had a scratched or dirty CD or DVD in the drive.

Hello everyone.

My PC has started freezing up occasionally in the past couple of weeks - and it's getting worse by the day.

Not to much to tell about this issue - the PC just freezes completely(including the 'mouse cursor') from time to time. However, it hangs not only inside of windows but even when booting(I am sometimes unable to run the pc for several times) because of repeating hangs without even getting to windows once. It even hangs a lot before the boot sequence takes place - on the BIOS part.

My guess is probably hardware defect. What do you guys think? I have tried Windows Memory Diagnostics - results are fine. are there any other good diagnostics software to try? maybe for hardware other than memory(Motherboard, powersupply, maybe even hds?)

Could it be a virus/worm/something else? or is that options ruled out since it hangs not in windows too?

Thanks in advance for any help,

P.S: It's a P4 2.4Ghz PC with 512 RAM. The HD is IDE.

Answer:PC freezing occasionally

If you have a hardware issue rather than a software problem then the first areas to look at are temperature and voltage. Is your system clean? Dust and dirt buildup in the PC can cause temperatures to rise.

These can be querried by downloading Everest and looking at the sensors on your motherboard. The link for Everest is in my signature below. Post your temps and voltages.

The next area might be failing ram, if you have 2 ram chips try removing one checking the system and then swapping sticks and check again.

Please post your complete PC specs, make and model of your mobo and Power supply make and wattage. Age of the system and any changes in hardware or software that you have made recently.

Check all connectors and cables for damage or loose connections.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on a PC brought about 2 months ago (Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 @ 2.6 GHZ, 3 GB RAM and a NVIDIA G100 graphics card) and I've been having for some time now these frequent BSODs that are kind of annoying me because I can't seem to find the exact solution for my problem. This is how it was behaving at first: basically once in a while, after pushing the exit button on some random games I was getting this error. But yesterday I got a BSOD while just exploring some folders and no game exiting was involved whatsoever so then I started worrying quite a bit. I did some research and I've made a Memtest check for about 15 minutes (I know it's not as long as you'd expect) and I got zero errors and nothing out of the ordinary happened since last night when I did this check. Temperatures were steady at about 57 degrees Celsius with a full load and in stand by I was getting my CPU heated at about 45 degrees Celsius and my GPU at about 51 degrees Celsius. I have attached the minidump archive which is I think what you guys will try and work with.

If you guys will need any additional information then please reply and it will make the highlight of my day bringing it here and helping you to solve my case.

Best of regards,

Answer:Occasionally getting BSODs

Usual causes: Defective hardware (particularly memory - but not just RAM), Faulty system service, Antivirus, Device driver, NTFS corruption, BIOS

In looking through your drivers, I can see that you are using Avira antivirus software. Third party antivirus known for causing BSODs. Please remove it for testing.

If you need a BSOD free antivirus, you can use Microsoft security essential:

Please remove Virtual Cd program such as Deamon tool or Alcohol 120% . They use sptd.sys, which I could found in loaded driver and well known for causing BSOD. Use this tool to remove sptd.sys

After turning my PC off, sometimes it won't turn on again when I press the power up button, the usual scenario being I turn it off at night, and come to it in the morning. As far as I can see, the motherboard power light is on inside the case.

However, if I remove the power cable, wait a few secs then plug it in again, it all boots fine no problems..

Any ideas as to what might be causing it? I would guess the PSU, but I couldn't explain why!

Sometimes when shutting down or restarting my PC (Dell Latitude E6500), it freezes and hangs right after the screen goes black. The hard drive activity indicator turns off and the laptop doesn't shut down. I've tried waiting a bit to see if anything happens, but no. It just hangs in that state. I then have to manually shut it down by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

Again, it does not happen on every shutdown or restart, but it does happen often.
What causes this and how can I fix it? Thanks for help.

Answer:PC won't shutdown or restart occasionally

I would start off by checking the Event Logs for errors or warnings that are time-coincident with you hanged shutdown and post a screenshot like so:

Good luck.

I have a Windows 8 desktop PC about 12 months old

Usually startup is fast - under 1 minute. But occasionally it takes a VERY long time for the system to boot - sometimes close to an hour! It only happens rarely, but when it does happen its very annoying, especially if I have some important work do do.

I have scanned for viruses, etc and found nothing. Is this designed behaviour (maybe its doing an update, or something) and if so how do I turn it off?

Answer:Startup occasionally very slow

Generally when it is installing updates you will see a message like "Installing update 1 of 5 please do not turn off your computer" or something like that with a percentage completed in white on a blue background. Do you see anything like that when this happens?

If it is updates causing the issue then you can choose when to re-boot. You'll see in the action center (the little white flag in the system tray - see below) if there are updates to be installed. The system will give you 72 hours notice so you can choose when to restart at a convenient time and at other times put the system to sleep instead of shutting it down.

If you don't see that then I don't know what it could be - it is unlikely to be start-up items as these would most likely do the same thing every time you restart.

My Windows 10 seems to be fine, except for the mail app inbox and notifications.

I have checked all the settings, but they must be correct anyway, because occasionally, an email arrives correctly in the inbox and I get a notification correctly. Then the next few just don't arrive, but interestingly, when I click on "All mail" they are all there.

I have removed my (GMail) account and then reinstated it, but that made no difference.

I have tried to uninstall the app using Powershell, but it asked me for "parameters" and I didn't know what to do at that point.

Any ideas, please, as to how to make the inbox and related notifications work correctly?

Curiously the fan never seems to spin fast even though the system gets really hot. I recalled there was a battery issue at one stage with some of the T models but my battery is not on that list. The hottest part is on the left hand side at the underside of the system. Hello, I have to admit I'm quite the beginner towards help online sites. Sadly, my computer's warranty recently ran out, and it seems like my computer was waiting to give me problems right afterwards. I'm not sure if the problem is a virus nobody's found before, or if it's a hardware problem, but my computer will randomly begin to freeze every now and then (mainly when on the desktop or surfing the web. For some reason, it's never done it during a game yet). Sometimes, it corrects itself after around 2-20 seconds, and other times I have to do a hard turn-off of my computer by holding the power switch. I reinstalled my computer's operating system not long after the problems began, and it did not seem to affect the freezes, but I do not believe I did a perfect factory setting restore due to the fact that afterwards, some links on firefox were still a different color, as though I had already clicked the links despite the fact that my computer had just been restored.
Also, for some reason, after the hard shut-off of the computer, my computer's clock will be set back an hour about one-half of the time i've done it - quite a seemingly random occurance.
I run Windows 7, and an Asus g75V. I know that I'm supposed to give some additional information, but I'm not quite sure how to get it.

Answer:Hdd not recognised occasionally at boot up

Hi laurieskye, I don't have any real answer to this mysterious happening, but to keep the thread live I'll air a few ideas. As I understand it, there are really 3 modes of restart. When you apply a soft restart (Start - Shutdown - Restart) the processor isn't initialised and so the BIOS doesn't start from the beginning. This is why old computers using overlay software to recognise larger hard drives than their BIOS is designed for won't recognise the full hard drive capacity using soft restart. When you do a full power down but leave the mains connected you still have 5V standby applied, so you can make use of the various optional wake-up modes (wake up on LAN, USb, modem, heyboard etc.) When you remove the power, then of course nothing is active and at switch on the computer is completely reset. I suspect that for some reason your slave drive is not being detected by BIOS without the complete reset.

This topic is part followed on from
But the Malware was resolved so I just need help on one final bit.
Some Information
When I start my laptop up it takes around 10 seconds to get to my user login screen, which is the same as when I had it new. It then takes around 3-8 seconds to actually log in to my account, it is quicker if the internet is off, but that is because of my firewall and AV.
About 20-30 minutes into my laptop starting up I will have the following open
Chrome - 3-5 tabs
Comodo Firewall (firewall only)
And usually it'll freeze for about 5-10 seconds and will return back to normal and it won't do it anymore no matter how many programs I run etc...
Any idea's what this might be?

Greetings.I have a second-hand Compaq Presario 7360. It came from a trusted source who used it for conferencing and primarily (it appeared) for games. I stripped off the toys and have turned it into something useful for a writer/editor and for desktop publishing. It runs Microsoft Windows 98 SE with an AMD-K6 3D processor. It has 120MB RAM. With Firefox and Microsoft Word open, 60% of the system resources are free. Those are the programs I use the most. I?m using about 4 GB of the 39 available on the HD and not quite half the space on my system drive (both are FAT32).Graphics acceleration is set at the notch above None (setting it at None created other problems, I vaguely recall). Windows is handling the virtual memory.I run CCleaner, Spybot, and Ad-Aware daily. I have ClamWin anti-virus. I use ScanDefrag 5.4 to clean, scan, and defrag my drives. I haven?t found what video card I?m using, but I searched and don?t have either the ATI 3D Rage II or the 3D Rage II Plus.I recently downloaded HDD Health to check the system, and except for frequent notices that my raw read error rate is a little up or down, it seems okay. The temperature runs between 36 and 41 C.I?m not much of a tech guy, but I?ll try to provide any other info you need. The problem (at last): Once or twice a week, my computer will act as though molasses is running through the circuitry. Hey folks,

This is a work PC, so I don't do any p2p stuff on it or anything like that, but about a couple months ago it slowed waaay down after installing a Windows update. Upon reboot it wouldn't move past the Windows logo. I threw it into safe mode, ran Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Hitman Pro, and TDSSKiller on it, did a chkdsk, ran SFC Scannow... pretty much everything I could think of. Something worked (I think Hitman Pro found the culprit maybe) because I was able to boot in, and though things weren't super fast, they seemed pretty much back to normal. Until yesterday that is... iTunes was begging for an update and during/after the update I started to notice the same sort of sluggishness. Upon reboot couldn't get past the Windows logo again (or maybe I could, but I wasn't planning on waiting around), started the procedure I mentioned above, but none of the anti-malware came back with anything except a little adware. I prevented a few programs from automatically starting with MSCONFIG, and uninstalled a few redundant and unnecessary programs. All of that seemed to do the trick and I was able to log back in again though things feel less than perfect. I haven't been strictly monitoring my CPU and memory usage, but currently I don't see anything out of the ordinary. I don't know if this is a bug or maybe just some off OS configuration issue so thought I come here to ask. I ran ComboFix before I came to this forum and read the rules on running DDS, but I've pasted only t... Read more

Hi everyone. This is my first post.I got interested joining in this forum because I have read that there are many problems in computers have been solved.
I just wanna ask help for my prob. My computer have been formatted for just a month. Just from there I notice that my computer shuts down automatically without any notification or signal. and in most cases it happened when i turn my printer on/off (epson 2175). I really dont have idea why is it happening.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Computer Shuts down occasionally

Welcome to TSF

If the printer and the computer are both plugged into the same power source such as a power strip, surge suppressor or UPS (uninterruptible power supply), try plugging the printer into a completely separate circuit and see if the problem still occurs.

If so, download, install and run Speccy. Click File > Publish Snapshot > Yes > Copy to Clipboard and then paste in the URL you just copied into a Reply to this thread.

Hello, I am having an unusual problem. First, here are my system specs:

-Windows 2000 w/SP4
-AMD Athlon XP 1600 & 512 MB RAM

Now, sometimes, right after I log into my computer right after startup, the computer itself will sometimes restart. It does this randomly, and only right after logging in. I built this machine myself, and I think it might have something to do with the power supply, sometimes, but rarely, after it fully loads, it will turn off and turn back on. Does anyone know what would cause this and how to fix it?

Thanks for any help.

Hello all,

I have heard great things about this forum and I am excited to be posting here for the first time. I really hope my issue is a simple one, but I do not know enough to find a resolution on my own. About a year and a half ago I built a new machine:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 8168 Mb
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series, 1024 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 953766 MB, Free - 800716 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., SABERTOOTH P67
Antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012, Updated and Enabled

Everything has been going just fine, but about two weeks ago I noticed that I was starting to lose some FPS while playing the game League of Legends with my friends. At first I shrugged it off as just "one of those things that computers do sometimes," but after a couple of weeks I noticed it was happening more frequently. I've been playing this game on the same settings for about a year, I don't know what is causing the sudden, and random, decrease in my FPS while playing. Can someone help me out? I'm a busy father of three and when I sit down to do my gaming with my buddies, this issue becomes a real inconvenience. Thank you!

Answer:Occasionally Losing FPS while gaming

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Can you provide more detailed information about the machine. What is the exact make and model of the motherboard, RAM GPU (6800 is a series of GPUs, what is the exact one), exact make, model and wattage of the power supply? The more info the better.

Can you download and install HWMonitor (its free). Run the program and take a screenshot of it while your PC is just sat at the desktop with nothing running. Then, leaving HWMonitor running, start up league of legends (or another game) and run the game for a few minutes (maybe do a quick custom game that you can jump into / out of easily). After a few minutes (or a full game if you like) exit the game and screenshot HWMonitor again, post the two screenshots in a reply here.

First of all I want to thank all of you for the great tutorials on trying to figure this out on my own. I have tried and tried everything that was suggested, but I just can't figure it out by myself. I would really appreciate some help. I keep getting BSODs mostly when playing video games, but I have had a few just surfing the internet or after closing programs. I have attached the gathered files to this thread. As of now I have tried the following:

1. I have turned off all overclocking.
2. I have added 3 fans to my case and upgraded to water cooling for my processor making sure the perfect amount of thermal paste was applied.
3. Monitored my MB, CPU, Video Card, and case temperatures, which stayed in check (nothing ever rose above 76 degrees Celsius)
4. I uninstalled the ASUS software that has been cited as causing problems.
5. I have run Prime95 numerous times and watched the CPU temps stay under 76 degrees.
6. I have run Memtest86 overnight with no errors found.
7. I have run WhoCrashed and it suggested maybe it being my video card driver. I've tried many different driver versions going back a year and of course up to the most recent one with no fewer crashes on any version.

On top of all of the BSODs I keep getting, I'm also having a really annoying Internet problem that may or may not be related. I constantly get ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED errors in Chrome and some web pages will load partially with half of the images being broken links. If I scroll down in F... Read more

You can check the settings by typing touchpad on the Windows desktop and selecting Mouse and touchpad settings. You should see a variety of settings you can tweak. If this does not resolve the issue you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the touchpad driver. Also check for an updated driver as well. You might want to have a USB mouse handy to navigate once you uninstall that driver.

Answer:pc restarts occasionally for no reason

Random restarts can occur for many reasons...overheating, failing hdd, faulty RAM, failing power supply, and yes, even malware.

I see no obvious malware in that log.

Let's run this diagnostic tool, and see what we can see.
Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HJT log
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

There are many issues that could be causing this including but not limited to RAM issues and or corrupt vid card drivers.Do a search for a utility called Desklay which saves your desktop settings and restores them with one clik.Meantime check your vid card drivers and run memtest on that RAM.

Answer:Trackpad occasionally freezes

more often than not its a driver error.  Try finding and reinstalling the drivers for the touchpad (I'm assuming there is one) and see if that helps.  How old is your thinkpad and what model?  (ie. T61, X60, etc)  Its unlikely its a hardware error, but I wouldn't rule it out

I'm experiencing 100% cpu usage on start up.and it remains that way for 15-20 mins before returning to about 1-10%. Everything runs smoothly after that, and then without any reason or cause the cpu usage shoots up to 100% and stays that way again for 15-20 mins only to get back to normal again. I don't understand what might be causing this, I have checked the task manager but I can't pinpoint anything that might be behind this.

I'm including my hijackthis log with this post. I hope it'll give a clue as to what might be causing this.

I have had a problem with audio occasionally either stuttering/skipping or popping for a while. It happens on iTunes as well as stuff running on my browser. It's hard to test if it is universal since it's a sporadic problem, but I think it covers all audio in general. I am running my audio via firewire through a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 which is set as the primary audio device. I also have a Creative Audigy SE plugged in, but it isn't in use, though when I make it primary the problem still persists.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I have seen some stuff with IDE controllers, though I'm not sure if this is my problem and I don't want to start deleting stuff I need. Any help would be great. Thanks!
I'm running windows 7 64 bit.

Addition: seems like when I execute a command like moving files or something is what causes it, meaning a slight spike in CPU usage. I have never had this problem in the past though. I don't have an AMAZING processor but it's AMD Athlon II at 2.9 GHz

Open up task manager and take a look at your processes, screenshot what is active and bring it back here.
With task manager open check your system performance tab.
See how much of the hard drive is moving stuff when you copy back and forth.
Screenshot that as well and post it back so we can see whats going on.

I have windows 7 ultimate, 64 bit SP1 on my Thinkpad, have realtek audio on my laptop which is upto date and has no problem, however I am facing a very unique problem.

Sound / audio from my laptop randomly plays sometime and sometime it doesn't , for instances when the machine starts the windows sound plays every time, however one started the other sounds like USB pluggin sound , folder click sound and the sounds / audio in music and movies don't play,

Sometime the movies plays without audio and sometime its shows this error, Windows Media Player error C00D11B1.

I have tried updating the realtek driver but it always says up to date. when I checked with Lenovo they said that hardware is perfectly fine and play sound when tested from control panel, there must me some issues with the software in windows.

can any one guide me on how should I resolve this issue ? thanks

Answer:No Sound, Works occasionally

Hello Basics mate I never rely on the Windows feature for drivers - always go for the jugular mate - the manufacturers in your case Realtek.

Now to get some details on that device see this ditty of mine

Using HW Info general components

Download HW Info and pick the right bit version - - (copy and paste this site into the search bar) If you do not need the running information in the smaller right hand panel close it. In the left hand window click on the + for the individual device groupings and they will open out to the various components.

Go on opening out further until you get to the device itself. click on it and it will highlight. In the right hand window there will be a very detailed description of that device as in brand, speeds model number etc etc These are very detailed and are just what is needed for searching for drivers etc.

See my pic for an example - in this I have opened out one my components and then highlighted one of the one you need and you can see the detail.

In my pic is my audio stuff send back a pic if you can or just give us the details of that device.

Hey all,
When I boot my computer (I have included my system specs below) I occasionally experience a BSOD. It's really random when it will happen, for example, yesterday it took 14 boots to boot correctly. Today I have booted it twice and it booted correctly the first time I tried on my first attempt and the second time I tried on my second attempt. I have a relatively new system, but it hadn't been giving me any issues prior to around 4 days ago when this problem arose. Around the time that the BSOD's started, I had installed a USB hub into my 3" floppy slot and it worked correctly for about a day, but when the BSOD's started, I unhooked the hub and they continued, so I reconnected the hub and it seems to still be working correctly. Other than that I haven't made any hardware changes and only light software changes in about two months. My system is completely stable when it is actually running, and I haven't had any crashes or BSOD's since the boot BSOD's started, but it's getting increasingly annoying to need such a variable amount of time to start my system and I am also starting to get worried that I might damage my hardware.

Answer:BSOD occasionally on start-up

For some reason the collection application did not pick up any BSOD minidumps (it does this occasionally). Can you check C:\Windows\Minidump and upload anything you find there.

If there is nothing there and you have definitely got bluescreens then can you check the settings mentioned in this post to see if your system is set up correctly to collect dump files when it Blue Screens.

From your event logs I can see that you have had 10 recorded BSODs in the past 2 days alone!

I did manage to track down some data on at least 2 of those BSODs

Note which driver is mentioned? usbccgp.sys

Module Name: usbccgp
Display Name: Microsoft USB Generic Parent Driver
Link Date: 7/13/2009 6:06:45 PM

As this is a Microsoft Driver it is unlikely to be the true cause.

The mention of a USB driver and the fact that they started occurring only after you installed the new hub make me pretty suspicious of that hub and what it might have done to your motherboard.

Remove that hub now and hopefully the problems do not continue (if they do make sure you collect the minidump as they contain more accurate troubleshooting information than the rest of the files)

In both Internet Explorer and Firefox, I'm sometimes getting re-directed to what appear to be malicious sites. It occurs both when clicking a Google search result or any other link on a webpage. Sometimes, the re-direct takes me to a blank page, but I'm assuming that the edits made to my HOSTS file by Spyboy S&D are causing this.

OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (32-bit)

Antivirus: AVG Free

Windows Firewall is running

Spybot S&D

I have done full scans using AVG, Malwarebytes, and Spybot but the issue still occurs.

Following the instructions in the Preparation Guide, here are the requested logs. My DDS.txt log is too large to post and attach in this post so I will attempt to post it in a reply.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Browsers occasionally get re-directed

Last night after I clicked on a link from a Google search, my browser (Firefox) was redirected to some sort of spam website with advertisements. I have a fully-updated version of Norton Anti-Virus 2012 and ran a full system scan after this, which only turned up a few tracking cookies. Today I ran the Norton Power Eraser, which identified and removed one bad startup item called "ofonmws.dll". However, even now I am getting Google redirects every few searches. I appreciate any help you can offer!

Answer:Google occasionally redirecting

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At... I upgraded from VISTA to Windows 7 about a month ago. Mostly everything has been fine, but once in awhile, my computer just freezes. It's happened 3 times since I upgraded. Everything locks so all I can do is push the power button to turn the computer off. It happened again this morning when I was running a Malwarebytes scan. The other 2 times it happened, the only app running was Carbonite which basically runs throughout the day.

I don't think the problem is Malwarebytes or Carbonite. I have no idea how to solve this. Once I restart, I check the Event Logs and they show nothing unusual. I'd be very grateful if someone here has any ideas.

Answer:PC occasionally freezes and I have no idea why

Hi Welcome to Seven Forum ... Can i know which version of Malwarebytes are you using ??

I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop and after installing Windows 7, my laptop occasionally hangs or even restarts on its own. I do not have any of that problem when i was working with Vista. I have not reinstalled much stuff on my laptop, just google chrome, iTunes, MSN Messenger and McAfee Antivirus. Would appreciate some help here. Thank you =)

Answer:occasionally freezes + self restarts

Have you looked at the task manager to see if anything is eating up the memory? Are all of the device drivers up to date? Did you do a clean install or an upgrade? x32 or x64? This information would be helpful as your question is a bit vague and could have endless scenarios contributing to the issue.

Its been my experience that problems such as this normally start right after installing something. McAfee is also known to be a resource hog. If it were my system I would start from scratch with a clean install, then install updated device drivers followed by Windows updates. If all was well, I would then begin to install applications and pay attention to system behavior after each one.

I have already attempted to have my computer fixed in the Windows 7 forum, but sadly the solutions that were tried failed to create any positive effect. In fact, I would say that my computer is freezing somewhat more often, although I am not sure if that is because of the fact that I have been restarting my computer so often (which SEEMS to make the computer freezes happen more often). The freezes can occur in three ways, rather than the original two that I stated earlier. Sometimes, my computer experiences a brief, momentary freeze that fixes itself within anywhere between a few seconds to about twenty seconds. Then, there is a freeze that starts off with the complete freezing of everything but the mouse. However, if I click (anythings) several times, my computer will fully freeze up, requiring a hard restart (holding down on the power button until the computer turns off). And the last one is very similiar to the second, except that it is a complete and immediate freeze. I have no idea what triggers these things.
I reinstalled my computer's operating system about two weeks ago shortly after the freezes started in hopes that it would fix the problem, but I do not believe I managed a full return to factory settings due to the fact that after reinstalling it, when I installed firefox and google-searched some sites (that I have previously used), the links were the color of a link someone has already used, implying (I would assume) that there were still files suggesting as such a... Hey everyone,

I had a D-Link DGL 4500 router that worked perfectly until it died yesterday, so I replaced it with the Cisco Small Business WRVS4400N on a wired connection to my computer and cable modem.

The new router works fine, but whenever I play any game, once every few minutes my ping will go up to 999 and I'll get a "network disconnected" message. It happens very quickly, then resumes as normal. This never happened with my previous router.

I would really appreciate some thoughts on this because it's driving me nuts.

Answer:New Router, Ping goes to 999 occasionally, please help

Some of the Linksys/Cisco Small Business products are decent (such as their RV0 series), but I have to say after setting up several of those 4000 series units for some clients, I quickly replaced them...had issues with them.

For giggles, have you tried to see if it has the latest firmware?

And what make/model "modem" is in front of it?

My computer has been having issues for a few weeks. When I run a full screen game, every 5 orso minutes, the graphics (not audio) will completely lag out, and it will start using 100% cpu for about 30 secs - 2 mins. Then go back to normal. This doesn't happen any other time, except very rarely when I am playing a facebook game (not full screen, and when it has happened, only after 9PM). I have run many virus scans (with AVG, adaware, spybot, ccleaner, malware) and come up with nothing. I've reformatted three times, and installed Win XP Pro on a different HD each time. When the lagging out happens, one of my HD's makes a funny kind of squeaky noise like it's working very hard. Does anyone have any idea?

Answer:Computer occasionally uses 100% cpu in games.

Hello all,

I have had my computer for about two years now and just recently it has started skipping occasionally. I say occasionally because sometimes if I start up the computer it will run like normal, then other times everything I do makes it skip.

The sound on whatever I am doing skips and makes an annoying almost grinding noise and it takes the mouse a few seconds to move where I move it when the computer hits one of the skips. It is most noticeable when running a game or something similar.

I have seen a few other people on here with the same problem, but their solutions have not worked for me.

I have tried a few things. I ran a system restore to a date before the skipping started and that did not work. I ran malware bytes and spyware doctor and removed any infected files they found, and I cut down the number of programs that start on startup, but nothing has worked.

I am running Windows 7 and I know as much information I can provide about my system is helpful, but I don't know how to go about getting that information. If someone can help me with that too, I will happily post whatever anyone needs to know about my system.

I have a Motorola WR850G router. I have it configured like this:

Wired 1: Main Comp (3.5Ghz IC7-G onboard NIC)
Wired 2: Mom's Comp (HP 650MHz P3)
Wired 3: Spare Machine/ CSS Server (3Ghz, IS7 onboard NIC)
Wired 4: Web Server (HP 566Mhz Celeron, Mandrake 10.1)
Wireless 1: My Laptop (2.4Ghz, 802.11g card)
Wireless 2: Dad's Laptop (2.0Ghz, CISCO 802.11b card)
Wireless 3: Mom's Laptop (AMD 2400+ Mobile, 802.11g card)

All computers are running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, except for the Linux web server.

The problem is, that some of the computers lose their connection. My main computer, my web server, my laptop, and my mom's laptop all run perfectly, and never lose a connection. My CSS server/Spare Machine, Mom's desktop, and Dad's laptop work fine most of the time, but once every minute or so, they lose their connection, and reconnect within a few seconds. THis is a pain, and creates major lag when it happens to my CSS server. I have tried upgrading the firmware on the router, reinstalling NIC drivers, setting static IPs, and some other things on the computers that lose connections, but nothing seems to help, and it is a big pain in the ass. I have a fast RCN cable internet, by the way. Any help on solving this problem is grealty appreciated.

Answer:Loss of connectivity occasionally

When they lose thier connection, does it say "Network connection unplugged"? Are they all plugged into the same router/hub?
